Duran Duran's Roger Taylor on how they avoided being written off in history as a teen band

duran duran 40th anniversary tour

Roger Taylor and his bandmates are about to take their rightful place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame , an overdue honor that dovetails nicely with a 2022 tour celebrating Duran Duran's 40th anniversary and a great new album titled "Future Past."

They seem to be having a lot of fun on these shows. "It does feel like that actually," Taylor says.

One reason is how well the "Future Past" songs have been blending with the hits on which their legacy has come to rest, from "Girls on Film" to "Hungry Like the Wolf" and "Rio."

"It's not like we're trying to shoehorn something into the set that's kind of very abstract and not really in keeping with the early material," he says.

We came here to celebrate': Duran Duran take a well-deserved victory lap in Phoenix

Why working with Giorgio Moroder on 'Future Past' was so special

In a candid Zoom call from Las Vegas, Taylor talked with The Arizona Republic about keeping the spirit of "Rio" alive while looking to the future in advance of the Phoenix date on a tour where the energy of the fans feels a little like touring the States in the '80s.

My friend who's seen the tour twice says the dance floor-friendly nature of the new songs feels like a bit of link to the earlier records.

We have to thank Erol Alkan, the producer who did most of the record, for that. He wanted to incorporate the earlier kind of grooves into the more contemporary music we're producing. So there was a lot more live playing, a lot more work from John (Taylor) and I in the studio, where we kind of really dug in and created some organic grooves.

Of course, we worked with Giorgio Moroder, who's a real hero of ours. He's very much part of the DNA of those early records. In fact, the first song we ever played live as Duran Duran was "I Feel Love." So to have him come and work on this record has given it that kind of early Duran feel.

Now seems an especially great time for this type of record, coming out of the pandemic.

I think people are ready to party again. The energy coming from the audience is quite like nothing I’ve felt since the early days when we came to America in the early '80s.

Was part of the appeal of titling the album "Future Past" the idea of moving on into the future while also embracing what you like about your past?

I think John and Simon (Le Bon) were describing the sound of the record to somebody. And they said, "Oh, wow, it's kinda like your future past, isn't it? You look into the future, but the record has elements of your past." And John just hooked onto that phrase.

The title has always been so important with Duran Duran. I mean, you think of "Rio." That just tells you almost what's gonna be on the record. "Seven and the Ragged Tiger" was a slightly more complex-sounding record. We were going through a few different avenues. So again, the title kind of tells you that.

'The sound of an era':   How 'Stranger Things' revived an '80s band from Phoenix

What it's like looking back on 40 years of Duran Duran

This is also a 40th anniversary tour. How does that feel?

It feels great to still be in the building. I can't think of many bands that have been playing together as long as this and still releasing music that's being embraced by the public. We don't kind of sit around saying, "Oh, wow, it's our 40th anniversary." But I think we feel appreciative that we're still recognized, that we can still go out and play, that we can still release new records.

What do you think of those earlier records when you hear them now?

I mean, I'm not one to blow my own trumpet (laughs). I think they sound great. When I hear an early Duran song on the radio, I always think, "Wow, that still sounds great." And I think it's down to amazing production. We've been lucky enough to work with Colin Thurston on the first couple records, Alex Sadkin, Nile Rodgers, Bernard Edwards. It's so important to have the right producer.

I hear Chic records and they still sound amazing. I hear Michael Jackson records. They sound amazing. And I think we're definitely part of that club where the early records sound great. Prince is another one. So it's a great little club to be part of.

Do you recall a point in those early days where it felt like you had really captured what it was that you were going for as the sound of the band?

I do. I remember the exact moment. We'd just finished the "Rio" album and were flying to Sri Lanka to do some videos. Nick (Rhodes) had stayed behind for a few days in London to do more mixing on the record. Nick is such a perfectionist. And he finally finished the mixing.

I got to Sri Lanka and — remember the old cassette Walkmans? — I got a cassette of the album. I sat in my room in Sri Lanka and put on my headphones and I listened to the record all the way through and thought, "Wow, this is quite something. I think we've finally achieved what we've been looking for."

We formed in 1979. But I don't think we really found the blueprint until "Rio." And of course, it's gone on to be regarded as a classic album of the '80s. So I think my instinct was correct.

'It was our Fillmore':   Metro Phoenix had never seen a club quite like Dooley's

Why Roger Taylor left Duran Duran in 1985: 'It ... felt like a runaway train'

You took some time away from doing this in 1985. Could you talk about how you arrived at that decision and how it felt to step away from such a huge pop cultural phenomenon?

People couldn't understand why I walked away from this thing that was at the height of its creativity, its fame, its success. I'm a great one for instinct. And my instinct was telling me at that point it was time to take a break. It had been a very intensive five years. And I'd never really had time to experience normal life.

So I said, "I'm gonna take a break. I don't know how long it's gonna be. But I just know I need it." The train was running. And the train was not gonna stop for anybody at that point. It kind of felt like a runaway train. And I needed to get off for a while.

I love to live a normal life outside of work. And I couldn't do that in 1985. It was impossible. So I thought it was time to step away.

Did you miss it?

(Long pause). I think I did after a while. When I heard "The Wedding Album," I thought "Wow, this is a great record and I kind of miss being in that band." So that kind of planted the seed. I did some work with them in '96 around the "Thank You" album. Then eventually, we got together in 2001, which felt great. I'd had a normal life for a while. I'd had kids. I'd moved out of London. And I came back with a freshness.

'Can we do this?'   Duran Duran's John Taylor on avoiding nostalgia

What the 2022 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction means to Duran Duran

You'll be taking your place in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in November. How does that feel?

It feels incredible. It's such a huge thing to be part of. I really don't know what is not to like about this whole thing. We never got much recognition in the early days from critics or the establishment. And it seems that finally we're getting the recognition that we always thought we deserved. So it feels really great. We're very, very grateful.

Do you have any thoughts on what caused the sort of turning of the tide in how you guys are received by critics and by the establishment?

If we'd have been like a three-album wonder and completely disappeared by 1985, we would've been written off in history as a teen band. Because we'd come out of that kind of teen band experience, if you like. But people have had time to listen and think, "Actually, they've made some great records over the years." We've worked hard at staying together. We've worked hard at making records. And I think in the end we've kind of got our just deserts.

You’ve said you view Duran Duran as something of a work in progress.

We've never been satisfied. Never sat on our laurels and thought, "Wow, we've made three great records and that's it. We've done our thing." There's always been a sense that we've had room for improvement in everything. We always think we can be better. That's very important if you're gonna be around for a long time. You've got to keep looking forward. You can't keep looking over your shoulder.

Duran Duran’s FUTURE PAST 40th Anniversary Tour: A Night of Music Magic and Resilience at Red Rocks Amphitheatre

Iconic Band Celebrates Four Decades of Hits, Overcoming Adversity, and Inspiring Hope in an Unforgettable Performance.

By Terrell Stewart | min read |  September 10, 2023

Duran Duran @ Red Rocks Ampitheater - 29th August 2023 - Terrell Stewart

Red Rocks Amphitheatre stands as a hallowed ground where music history is etched into the very rocks themselves. Nestled amidst the breathtaking natural formations of Morrison, Colorado, this open-air amphitheater has earned its reputation as one of the most iconic venues in the world. It has garnered the Best Small Outdoor Venue award from Pollstar a staggering 11 times, a feat so astonishing that the award was ultimately renamed the Red Rocks Award to give other venues a fighting chance. On this memorable night, it served as the backdrop for a remarkable chapter in the story of Duran Duran - their FUTURE PAST 40th Anniversary Tour.

Red Rocks Amphitheatre

The evening's festivities commenced with a surge of energy courtesy of Bastille . The infectious enthusiasm of this British band set the tone for an unforgettable night. As the audience leaped to their feet during the opening notes of "Good Grief," the amphitheater came alive with a fervor that only Red Rocks can inspire.

Bastille, led by the charismatic Dan Smith, maintained this fervor throughout their set, culminating in a crowd-pleasing rendition of "Pompeii." The audience's enthusiastic response was a testament to the band's ability to connect with their fans and set the stage for what was to come.

Following Bastille's rousing performance, the stage was graced by the legendary Nile Rodgers & CHIC . Nile Rodgers, a musical icon in his own right, took the audience on a groovy journey through disco, funk, and dance music. With a radiant smile, he encouraged everyone to "dance," and the ensuing euphoria was palpable. Classics like "Le Freak," "We Are Family," and "Good Times / Rapper's Delight" kept the amphitheater pulsating with rhythm and joy.

Singers Kimberly Davis and Audrey Martells, dressed in vibrant, flowing gowns, wove their soulful voices into the tapestry of sound, captivating every heart in the venue. Chic's performance was a shining testament to the timeless allure of disco, leaving the audience yearning for more.

The time had come for a spirited voyage back to the 1980s - the era that first catapulted Duran Duran to international stardom. As the backdrop played a tape of "Velvet Newton," evoking the nostalgia of MTV and music videos, the amphitheater was veiled in a mystical fog. Emerging from the mist, four figures assumed their positions on stage. Nick Rhodes, John Taylor, Roger Taylor , and Simon Le Bon , the core members of Duran Duran, stood there, silhouetted against the backdrop, as anticipation crackled through the air.

The emotional climax of the night arrived when Duran Duran dedicated "Ordinary World" to the people of Ukraine, offering a poignant moment that touched everyone's hearts. They concluded their main set with a rousing rendition of "Girls on Film / Acceptable in the 80's," leaving the audience yearning for more. Returning for an encore, Duran Duran bestowed two final gifts upon their devoted fans: "Save a Prayer" and "Rio." Standing at the front of the stage, bathed in the adoration of their dedicated followers, they waved and applauded in appreciation. It was a mutual love fest, a testament to the enduring connection between the band and their fans.

But amidst the celebration, it was impossible to forget the absence of guitarist Andy Taylor, a vital part of Duran Duran's history. Taylor, now 62, had been courageously battling prostate cancer, a diagnosis that had initially been classified as needing "palliative, end-of-life care" back in 2018. However, the night was a testament to his resilience and the unwavering power of hope as Taylor's health issues had evolved, and he was now "asymptomatic" thanks to the innovative and cutting-edge Lutetium-177 treatment.

Lutetium-177, a type of radioactive treatment targeting cancer cells, had transformed Taylor's prognosis. In an interview with The Times, Taylor expressed his gratitude for the treatment and called its creator, scientist Christopher Evans, "a genius" and even compared him to "the Elon Musk of cancer." The treatment, though groundbreaking, had its challenges; Taylor had become "radioactive for several days" after each session and had to sleep alone for two weeks following each treatment. Nonetheless, the treatment had extended Taylor's life by five years, offering hope and inspiration to all those who face the challenges of cancer.

As the final notes of "Rio" echoed into the Colorado night, there was a profound sense of closure and celebration. Duran Duran's FUTURE PAST 40th Anniversary Tour was not merely a concert; it was a journey through time, a celebration of the enduring power of music, and a tribute to the indomitable human spirit. Their legacy will continue to shine on, long after the final encore, serving as a testament to the timeless magic of music and the strength of the human will.

Duran Duran Set 2022 North American Tour with Guest Nile Rodgers & Chic

by Tina Benitez-Eves March 16, 2022, 8:49 am

Duran Duran has revealed their North American tour celebrating the band’s 40th anniversary and the release of their 15th album Future Past.

Videos by American Songwriter

Featuring special guest Nile Rodgers & Chic—the group that the guitarist, songwriter, and producer co-founded in 1972—for select shows, the 14-date tour kicks off Aug. 19 in Minnesota and will conclude Sept. 9-11 with three nights at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles with additional stops at Madison Square Garden, the Wynn in Las Vegas, and other cities

The recent Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nominees recently topped the fan vote for the 2022 induction with more than 630,000 voters , with Dolly Parton, who recently rescinded her nomination , along with Pat Benatar, Eurythmics, and Eminem rounding out the top five. Through April 29, fans can vote for the top five artists, which will comprise the “fans’ ballot” that will help determine the 2022 Inductees.

Working with producer Erol Alkan on Future Past, the band pulled in longtime hero, Italian composer Giorgio Moroder, who worked on tracks “Tonight United” and “Beautiful Lies,” in addition to Blur’s Graham Coxon, who co-wrote and plays guitar on several tracks, former David Bowie pianist Mike Garson on “Falling,” and longtime collaborator Mark Ronson, who co-wrote ‘Wing.” Featured artists also include Swedish artist Tove Lo, Ivorian Doll, and Japanese rock band CHAI.

“I think that there was a transition period where we were moving toward a different style of songwriting, more of an emotional, human, experiential, kind of approach, and I think we got that with ‘Ordinary World’ and ‘Come Undone,’” said John Taylor in the September/October 2021 issue of American Songwriter. “It’s exhausting for the lyricist because he’s having to plumb the depths of his emotional world while fighting this idea that Duran Duran is a happy band that makes happy music.”

Working with Alkan, the band moved from overproduction and returned to the basics of an under-manufactured sound of 1981 debut  Duran Duran  and  Rio concentrated on each instrument, and brought the rhythm section to the forefront.

“When you listen to those early Duran albums, you can hear John, you can hear me, you can hear everyone,” added Roger Taylor. “We’ve probably lost that a few times along the journey, because you’re always exploring different routes, and we’ve gone down the electronic corridor a few times, but Erol wanted to get that organic sounding record where you can actually identify the individual members.”

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the eponymous debut release of Duran Duran, with the iconic group also dropping its 15th studio album, “Future Past,” on Oct. 22 . The aptly titled collection is referential of Duran Duran’s signature sounds, teased out by producer-of-the-moment Erol Alkan. Italian disco and EDM composer Giorgio Moroder lends a hand on a couple of songs, and Blur guitarist Graham Coxon brings his inventiveness to the mix. Featured guests on the album include Tove Lo, Ivorian Doll and Japanese band Chai. Duran Duran co-founder and resident tech visionary/image consultant Nick Rhodes talks then and now with  Variety .

What are your thoughts about “Duran Duran” and MTV turning 40 this year?

MTV feels so much older than us, don’t they? For the first 10 years or so of our career, it was an incredible channel, inspiring for musicians and fans. If you were in New York, you went to the studio and it was always fun. Simon [Le Bon] and I took Andy Warhol with us, had him sit between us taking photographs. Another time, we took Keith Haring, who painted the entire set. They never questioned anything. They were quite maverick. When MTV started to move away from music and into reality shows, it lost its focus for us. I haven’t really thought about it much since that point. But at the beginning, it was amazing.

That was the point when most teenagers, girls in particular, were Duran Duran devotees. You seemed like such adults then but you were only a few years older than your fans.

Popular on Variety

When I was 14 years old, I had David Bowie on my wall. By the time I was 19 years old, I was hanging out with him. It was very strange for me, but I was incredibly grateful to have such a creative and inspirational friend.

In the new documentary “Under the Volcano,” you recall recording at the height of your fame at George Martin’s isolated AIR Studios in the island Montserrat. Can you expound on that experience?

At that point in our careers, we couldn’t record in London anymore. We were besieged by hundreds of people. You couldn’t call the police every time you needed to get out of a building. It was ridiculous and impractical. The idea of going to this secluded island in the Caribbean and having a state-of-the-art recording studio, on paper, seemed to be the most glorious fantasy any musician could have. We went there with every good intention. We got the seeds for “Union of the Snake,” “The Reflex” and “New Moon on Monday.” At the same time, we could never have finished the record there. I need the energy of a city around me. You don’t make albums when you’re on holiday.

Without YouTube tutorials, how did you learn to apply your flawless makeup as a teenager?

Practice. When I was 15, 16 years old and first putting on makeup, I was never going to go to somebody else, even one of my aunties and ask, “How exactly do you put that eyeshadow on?” I’d put things on my face and think, “I like the way that looks.” Everything about Duran Duran has always been handmade. People think we’ve got these armies behind us who help us do things. From the very beginning, it was me and John [Taylor] sitting on the floor with a sketch pad and a few records, coming up with ideas. We used to go to women’s clothing stores to buy girls’ jackets and fabulous scarves, because the only things for men were horrible acrylic suits and V-neck jumpers that your granddad would wear. John and I used to come home number 50 bus from Barbarella’s at midnight, 1AM on Friday night. It was not a lot of fun for the two of us with our bright red jackets, makeup and dyed hair.

Your popularity started with a primarily female fanbase and grew to a significant male fanbase. How do you feel about this change over time?

We started out as this art school cult band playing songs like “The Chauffeur” and “Night Boat” in nightclubs. Suddenly, we’re in front of 15,000 screaming girls. It was a culture shock. It was such a complete paradigm shift. I was confused by it. It was a little difficult for me. I watched footage of the Beatles and the Rolling Stones and the Doors who were all pretty decent songwriters and they did okay and their records still sound great. That enabled us to somehow quantify it—not that we were particularly like any of those bands, nor am I comparing us to them. One of the first things that happened was the smart guys started to realize there’s an awful lot of very cute girls at Duran Duran shows. If you want to find a date, that’s the right place to meet them.

Duran Duran announce more dates for 40th anniversary celebration tour

The run, which features shows across the UK and Europe, will kick off with a three-night immersive experience in Ibiza called Touch The Sunrise.

duran duran 40th anniversary tour

Duran Duran have announced more dates for their 40th anniversary celebration tour.

Fans will be able to join the band for the May bank holiday weekend which will include DJ sets, outdoor film screenings, and a headline show.

The renowned British new wave group will be joined by two well-known members of the UK dance music scene, DJ Pete Tong and producer Erol Alkan.

Singer Simon Le Bon said: “Touch The Sunrise is going to be an extraordinary experience – and something we’ve never done before.

“Everyone in the band has a tremendous love for the island and over the years I have personally spent many summers there with friends and family – so it’s become somewhat of a home away from home for us.

“People often think of Ibiza as just a party island – which of course it can be – but there’s a side to it that we really hope our fans get to explore while they are there – that’s about the natural beauty of the place, the incredible food and the warmth of the people who live there year-round.

“Our set is going to be dancefloor-heavy – and after what we’ve all been through these past two years, we just can’t wait.”

The show will be Duran Duran’s first performance in Ibiza since 1987.

Two further outdoor shows have also been announced for 2022 at Castle Howard in Yorkshire, and the Caledonian Stadium in Inverness, Scotland.

Duran Duran have announced more dates for their 40th anniversary celebration tour.

The run, which features shows across the UK and Europe, will kick off with a three-night immersive experience in Ibiza called Touch The Sunrise.

Tickets for the experience, taking place from April 29 to May 2 next year, are available now.

Duran Duran commemorates 40th anniversary of its debut recording with new album

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- “Future Past” is an apt title for a Duran Duran album in 2021, reflecting a duality that’s very much on the band member’s minds.

There is, of course, a legacy -- 43 years since forming in Birmingham, England, 40 years since the release of its self-titled debut, worldwide sales of more than 100 million albums, a status as the kind of Beatles, or BTS, of its time. But the quartet wants to be a going concern as well, evidenced by its 15th studio set, a Top 5 debut in its homeland.

Produced primarily by DJ/producer Erol Alkan, “Future Past” also includes collaborations with Mark Ronson, Blur guitarist Graham Coxon (who co-wrote six of the 12 tracks), Tove Lo, Ivorian Doll, the Japanese band Chai and a pair of heroes -- longtime David Bowie keyboardist Mike Garson and groundbreaking dance music producer Giorgio Moroder. Duran indulges in a bit of nostalgia on the single “Anniversary” (and its clever throwback video), but the group’s real interest is in the now and genuinely blending its future and past into a pop continuum.

It’s not been an easy task, bassist John Taylor says via Zoom from Los Angeles, but the result, to quote another new track, has been “More Joy!” for both Duran and its fans...

There’s a lot of ways to commemorate a 40th anniversary, but it seems like having a brand new album out is very appropriate.

Taylor: Our manager was very keen; She saw it as this massive sort of opportunity for the brand a few years ago, and she made this huge list of things she thought we could do as part of the celebration -- and everybody was into it. But the closer that we got it seemed like everybody kinda lost the appetite. Nick (Rhodes) in particular was like, “Y’know, is this really something that we need to be shouting from the rooftops, that we’ve been together for 40 years? The best thing we can really do is a great new album, because that would speak 1,000 words as to why and how we’ve managed to stay together this long.” I think we’re all happier that’s how it worked out.

You do acknowledge the occasion on the song “Anniversary,” though.

Taylor: Yes, that’s one of the ideas that did stay -- “Maybe we could do, like, an anniversary song.” It’s not, like, super specific in terms of our experience, but it’s called “Anniversary” and it is in part about staying together, and the fruits of staying together. And we got to do this crazy video, which is the most fantastic kind of virtual celebration of the band. So I think it’s all fallen out just kind of right.

“Future Past” had a longer gestation than planned, didn’t it?

Taylor: We got started in the 2018 actually. The first phase of the recording was just sketching -- we do a lot of sketching, and after about a month of that it’s then the producer’s job to go through all these ideas and deem what’s worthy of developing. So we worked and then the pandemic hit and we didn’t really do anything for about nine months. And I would say that, for me, when we did pick up the strings again and we listened back to the work we had, I felt a new resolve, really. I thought, “Man, music’s important,” and I felt like we were really doing God’s work. So there was a more pragmatic, less romantic approach I had when we came back. We had about four months of pulling it all together in the light of the new now, or whatever it is.

No wine before it’s time, as they say.

Taylor: It’s funny because we always start our albums saying, “This one’s gonna be really quick!” But I don’t think anybody wants an album to be really quick. We’ve been together a long time. We tend to take care to take our time and not wear each other out. We can all make each other crazy, quite easily, so we tend to pace ourselves.

How crazy does it get?

Taylor: (laughs) There was a lot of disagreement, a lot of discord, about what this finished album should be. We’re rather like a marriage, a long-term marriage. There’s always disagreement. We’re always trying to, really subconsciously, reinforce the idea we’re better off together -- even though we’re all narcissistic egomaniacs. In some ways it’s become our thing, like that’s the experiment -- how does our creative democracy play out in the long term?

Some of that seems to be reflected in these songs as well.

Taylor: I think these are some of the most personal lyrics Simon (Le Bon) has written, on this album. There are a lot of threads on this album about shared history, shared time together, intimate time together and the positive and negatives of that, just trying to hold onto something. It’s about relationship politics, and particularly long-term relationships, and these lyrics seem to speak to the lockdown experience in a way. If we’d have just stuck to the old party vibe, the Duran Duran girls thing, it wouldn’t have been the same. I was very happy at how a lot of the lyrics, they just didn’t sound tone deaf. They work right now.

Duran Duran and Giorgio Moroder, on “Tonight United,” seems like a match made in heaven.

Taylor: He got a different version of the band -- we were very, very polite. (laughs) We were very, like, “We’re making a Giorgio Moroder record here, so whatever he wants us to do, we’ll just do it.” He was just delightful to work with. He had a remarkable ear for detail and a very light touch -- light but firm.

Having Mike Garson on the closing track, “Falling,” seems pretty appropriate, too.

Taylor: We actually, as fans, have a lot of shared history with Mike. The first concert Nick and I went to together, our first date, was Mick Ronson’s first solo tour at Birmingham Town Hall in 1979 and Mike Garson was on stage at that show. So it was very genuine, and Mike honestly jumped at it. He was very excited by the prospect of playing with us, as we were with him. And then he came back and asked us to be a part of that virtual (David) Bowie birthday celebration in January -- and asked us to do the song “Five Years,” which is a real sacred cow of a song, quite frankly. And doing that is what got us back in the groove; We did “Five Years” and then we picked up the strands of our album...just really inspired. So the whole thing was really a terrific exercise.

Forty years on, do you feel like Duran Duran is over the “Fab Five” hump and getting the kind of respect you think it should now?

Taylor: From what I understand there are very few artists on any level that feel they get what they deserve -- and I’m talking about the Rolling Stones, or you name it. Picasso! Everybody things they should probably get a little more, but at the same time we’re all waiting to be called out as frauds. You’re always looking over your shoulder. I left the band for a few years about 15 years ago, and I felt that I was not friends with the legacy. And in that time I was away I became a fan of the music again. I was able to listen more objectively to what we’ve done, and I came back as a fan.

Will we see Duran Duran live in 2022?

Taylor: We’re looking at shows, yeah. It’s something I very much want to do; It’s just a matter of everybody committing, really. You put an enormous amount of effort into a project like this; The lead up to the release of this album, was insane, like six months of talking up the album through all the varied media. Now we really want to get out and play it, and play all the hits, of course. We take it very...God, too seriously, really. It’s an ongoing dialogue, “What are we gonna play?” and all that. It’s a quality problem. We’ve got a lot of great songs people love to hear.

About The Song [ ]

Composed and also produced by Duran Duran , Graham Coxon and Erol Alkan. The song was written during a period when the band were preparing to celebrate various 40th anniversaries. The year 2020 also marked the occasion of Simon and Yasmin's 35th wedding anniversary. The single was released 15 days before the 40th anniversary of Duran Duran's First American Tour , and two months after the 40th anniversary of the release of Duran Duran (1981 album) , June 15th 1981 .

John Taylor said “‘ANNIVERSARY’ is a special song for us. Obviously we were conscious of our own impending 40th anniversary of making music together, but we wanted the song’s meaning to be inclusive in the broadest possible way. After playing and working together for so long, we very much appreciate what ‘being together’ and ’staying together’ can really mean. It’s not something we would have thought song-worthy 40 years ago, but we do today! It was also fun to build a track with hints of previous Duran hits, they’re like Easter eggs, for the fans to find.”

Music Video [ ]

The original idea for the video came from Nick in the summer of 2021. Simon confirms with Alan Carr "He was so excited that nobody had done a video like that before, with a party and celebrity lookalikes." Previous videos to feature lookalikes include: Justin Timberlake Cry Me A River , Mariah Carey Obsessed , and of course Frankie Goes To Hollywood Two Tribes .

The band contacted Alison Jackson, a famous celebrity impersonator producer. Alison put out a casting call for young DD lookalikes for the Anniversary video on August 4th 2021. (Twitter) .

Filming took place at Belvour Castle (pronounced BeeVar), in Leicestershire (with perhaps a filming day in London?) on September 7th. Soon after, the news was leaked that the video would feature the original fab five (Source) . Simon said on the Alan Carr radio show (link) that the video wasn't meant to offend anybody [famous]. It was just a funny party celebration. The band didnt get to see any of the lookalikes until the day of filming, and he didn't notice Vladimir Putin was there until he saw the final video. Simon was taken in by the authenticity of 'Jennifer Lopez', and it was a challenge meeting his younger self.

The Premier for the Anniversary video took place on October 19th (News) , released on YouTube (Watch) . A special 'Making Of' documentary called Double Take is made available during a Dreamstage live streaming event and a fan Q & A, on October 21st (News) .

The video includes lookalikes of: Queen Elizabeth II and the Royal Corgis, Elton John, Daniel Craig, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Brad Pitt, Vladimir Putin, George Clooney, Greta Thunberg, Ariana Grande, Billie Ellish, Dolly Parton, Cher, Kim Kardashian, Naomi Campbell, Megan Fox, and Jennifer Lopez. Other lookalike appearances may also include: Victoria Beckham, David Beckham. There also appears to be a cameo by the real Yasmin Le Bon at 1:33.

Partying with everyone from Lady Gaga , Elton John and Daniel Craig to Kim Kardashian, Vladimir Putin and Queen Elizabeth II, Duran Duran holds the anniversary bash to end all anniversary bashes in celebration of 40 years in music.

The festivities go down in the video for the band’s latest single, aptly titled “Anniversary.” But if you’re wondering just how they got the queen to do a group selfie at this shindig, well, it’s because they used celebrity lookalikes in the clip, which was released three days before Duran Duran’s 15th studio album, “Future Past,” arrived on Friday.

“We thought it might be interesting, as the song is all about celebration, to have a big party [and] to fill it with famous people,” keyboardist and founding member Nick Rhodes, 59, told The Post.

Duran Duran

“And since famous people always get booked up and can never agree on the same date, the idea actually came up speaking to Alison [Jackson, the director] saying, ‘Wouldn’t it be fun to do a spoof on one of the greatest parties ever, but with lots and lots of lookalikes?’ So we went to this quite extraordinary castle called Belvoir Castle in the UK, and all these lookalikes turned up. It was amazing watching them being transformed.”

Duran Duran certainly has good reason to have a soiree with the stars: It’s been 40 years since the group’s self-titled debut — featuring the synth-pop classic “Girls on Film” — was released on July 13, 1981.

A scene from Duran Duran's "Anniversary" video

“A few years ago, when we got this anniversary thing in our sights, our manager was getting quite excited [because] there was an opportunity to do all these sorts of things to celebrate,” said bassist John Taylor, 61, another founding member. “And as we got closer to it, we were all like, ‘Hmmm, is it really something that we wanna jump up and down to the world about?’ But at one point we thought, ‘How about a song called ‘Anniversary’?”

Of course, Duran Duran has always been on top of its video game. After making their debut, they went on to become the poster boys for MTV, with classic clips such as “Hungry Like the Wolf,” “The Wild Boys” and “A View to a Kill.”

Duran Duran in 1981

But it wasn’t all fun and games when Duran Duran shot the iconic video for 1982’s “Rio” on the Eilean yacht in the Caribbean. “Simon [Le Bon, lead singer] was an experienced yachtsman, but the rest of us were clueless,” said Taylor.

“And the greatest example of cluelessness is that shot where you see me actually kicking Andy Taylor over the edge of the boat, thinking I was being funny, thinking that it wasn’t a big deal at all. And as it happened, Andy just grabbed ahold of the tender, which is the little boat that sort of is tied on to the back of the yacht. He wasn’t happy about it — and rightfully so. He’s still got resentment against me over that, still to this day.”

The cover of Duran Duran's "Future Past"

Looking back on Duran Duran’s debut album 40 years ago, Rhodes said, “I think of our closeness growing up together as teenagers with a vision and huge ambition to do something special, to do something remarkable with our lives. But of course we were so young and naive that there was no plan B. So it was good that it worked.”

As for their secret to still making it work four decades later, Taylor said, “I kind of feel like if we were to break the band up tomorrow, all of our hair would fall out the next day!”

Duran Duran Celebrates 40th Anniversary Of ‘Planet Earth’

duran duran 40th anniversary tour

The band that defined England’s “New Romantic” Scene, Duran Duran celebrates the 40 th  anniversary of their debut single ‘Planet Earth’. The track set off a string of incredible hits hat also helped achieve their feat. People first heard the term in the lyrics of the track that go, “I heard you making patterns rhyme. Like some new romantic looking for the TV sound.”

Watch this video of Duran Duran playing the track on Swedish television show,  Måndagsbörsen,  below.

The performance was telecast on September 11 th , 1981. With ‘Girls On Film’ also out by this time, the band had riding a high wave across the globe. Coincidentally, a month prior to this, MTV went on air in America. The channel played a lot of Duran Duran the first year in desperate need of content. Call it serendipity but this helped the band crack their way into America.

Breakups And Reunions

With good work comes a lot of ups and downs. The following four decades saw the band endure a rollercoaster ride and lineup changes as well. But four-fifths of the original band stay, planning the 40 th  anniversary. The band in a positive spirit of return of live concerts is planning a 40th-anniversary tour of Europe in the summer of 2021.

Audiences have seen their favourite bands break up much to their disappointment. Andy Taylor, the founding guitarist who participated in the band’s reunion album, “Astronaut” in 2004. This did not last long after Duran Duran and Taylor felt previous tension resurface and parted ways in 2006.

Hopes Of Reunion?

Duran Duran keyboardist, Nick Rhodes asked fans not to keep their hopes up for a reunion. He explained, “I don’t think, to be quite honest, he would made things any better, in any way, Andy is a great guitarist, he’s, yes, difficult to be around. When Andy was no longer with us, peace broke out and we all got along much more easily. I don’t think he fits in personality-wise with the band, really; no one will ever take away anything out his musicianship and I wish him well, but I don’t think it’s with us.”

Although, a possible introduction of a member in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame indicates a possible reunion with Taylor. This might demand their reunion at least for a few tracks considering Depeche Mode and Cure being in it. Well, even if not, 80% of the band’s  OG members should please fans that show up for their anniversary tour.
