A douro valley wine tour & river cruise from porto.

Porto is famous for its wine.  As well as the Port wine, the Douro Valley region just outside Porto produces some fabulous wines and a Douro Valley wine tour makes a wonderful day trip from Porto.  I contacted Cooltour Oporto about one of their Porto wine tours which included transport to the Douro Valley, wine tasting and a Douro River Cruise from Pinhão, and was thrilled when they offered me a place.

I enjoyed a complimentary tour in exchange for my review, but all opinions are my own.

Hotel deals, group tours, about cooltour oporto.

According to their website, Cooltour Oporto has a young and dynamic spirit.  Their mission is to promote and show the real Portugal to our clients in a genuine and passionate way.  They run small group tours with a maximum of 8 people either on foot around Porto or in mini-vans around the Douro Valley and other areas of Northern Portugal.

Communication with the office team at Cooltour Oporto was friendly and efficient, including a gentle reminder that I had forgotten to give them my accommodation details for the pick-up on the morning of the tour.

The afternoon before my tour I had a confirmation of the pick-up time from my Airbnb, at a very precise 8.36am.  I admit, I was sceptical about the timings, but when the guide Hugo turned up at the door at 8.37, I was impressed!  And he was only late because he’d had to park just down the street.

Hugo spoke perfect English and once we were in the van, he introduced me to the other people on the tour, another solo traveller (yey!) from Bulgaria, a mother and daughter from Australia and we picked up an American couple at the next stop.

Then we were on our way, quickly navigating through the morning traffic in Porto and onto the motorway.  Most of the hour and a half drive to the Douro Valley was on motorways, but once we arrived in the valley there were some narrow windy roads to contend with, so I was glad I sat in the front to avoid any feelings of motion sickness !

Our Douro Valley Wine Tour

Our first stop on the tour was an impromptu one, which isn’t on the itinerary, but Hugo suggested we call into the bakery in the village where his grandparents live to pick up some fresh bread.  Well, who are we to deny the man fresh bread??

The village was tiny and had beautiful views over the valley – and the bread was delicious.  We went inside the bakery where Hugo showed us the oven where the ladies in the bakery made the bread, and we bought one to take with us.

Our next stop was for a quick bite to eat and a coffee to make sure we had something in our stomachs before hitting the wine!  It didn’t feel necessary, but I suppose they know from experience that having a bunch of tourists drinking wine on an empty stomach isn’t a good idea!

Wine Tasting in the Douro Valley

After our pit-stop, we went to the first winery, Vehla Geração.  The lady who met us there was lovely, and she poured out some olive oil and honey for us to taste, with more delicious bread.  Then we tried three wines – a white, a rose and a red – as she explained the grape varieties and the flavours in the wine.

The winery had built a very modern tasting area with a terrace which looked out across the valley, and although the juxtaposition of an old winery with the shiny new terrace was a little odd, the view was incredible.

Hugo said that our next stop would be the (optional) river cruise and suggested that if we wanted to buy some wine here to enjoy on the cruise this was the time to do it….

Having trusted his last suggestion about the bread, I didn’t see any reason to doubt him this time and clubbed together with the other solo traveller to buy a bottle of white wine to share on the boat.  It was €10, and well worth it!

Lunch in Pinhão

As it happened, we spent rather too long here enjoying the wines and the view, so we went for lunch before the cruise.  Hugo took us to a restaurant I never would have gone into alone, above the local fire station in Pinhão.  We were served huge plates of food, with hot roasted chicken, codfish croquettes, fried potatoes, rice, salad, and black-eyed-peas.

I gave it a good try, but we couldn’t manage to finish all the food, but it was all delicious.  And then we had dessert!  A piece of cake finished off the meal, all accompanied with vinho verde, green wine which is from the region.

We headed into the town to visit the beautiful Pinhão train station which is decorated in blue azulejo tiles, like many of the old train stations I had seen in Portugal.  The designs on the tiles told the stories of wine production in the Douro Valley, how they transported the wine along the Douro River, and of the perils of the river which claimed lives many years ago.

Our Mini Douro River Cruise

Pinhão quay on the Douro River is close to the station, but as we approached I started to get little nervous about being on a boat as I’m not great with waves and water – especially after wine!

However, I needn’t have worried as the river cruise was surprisingly smooth, even when the wind got up on our return journey.  We poured a cup of the wine that we had bought, cheered and admired the view.

All along the river, fields of vines stretch over the fields.  According to Hugo the best time to visit would be during the autumn when the leaves are changing colours and the bulk of the tourists have left.  It was very quiet in January when I visited, but I could imagine it being extremely popular in the summer!

This Douro River cruise lasted about an hour, we went 30 minutes down the river, then turned and came back the same way.  It was fairly short but enough to get a good idea of the scale of wine production in the Douro Valley and to enjoy the beautiful scenery.

It is possible to arrange Douro River Cruises which leave from Porto, but for me, this was just the right length, especially as the rain was on its way!

Port Wine Tasting

Our last stop was to another small winery and port producer called Quinta Santa Eufemia, where we visited the cellar where the port was stored and tried 5 different types of port.  By now you could tell we had been drinking wine all day!

My favourite port was actually the rose port, which isn’t very common, and I think the lady was disappointed that was my favourite.  I’m not a red wine connoisseur so the ruby and tawny ports are not really my thing.

However, I’m really glad we got to try all of them, so I didn’t need to do a port tour in Porto as well as the wine tour.  We had the chance to buy anything we wanted here as well, so I decided on a box of four types of port in small bottles, a gift for my dad which I could (just) fit in my hand luggage.

After that, we headed back to the van, and back to Porto.  The journey back took longer than expected as there was heavy rain and dense fog over hills, but Hugo got us all back safe and sound.

What I Loved About our Douro Valley Wine Tour

Our guide, Hugo, was lovely – he spoke better English than I do, and was friendly and chatty and clearly passionate about sharing the best of Portugal with us.  I loved how we visited small wineries and producers, not the larger famous named ones, and all the wine we tasted was delicious!

Anything I Didn’t Like?

Absolutely nothing to do with Cooltour Oporto, but the drive home seemed to take a long time – due to the weather.  Perhaps being able to stop off somewhere along the way for a bathroom break would have been useful, after so much liquid during the day!

I really enjoyed the tour, and although I had considered spending the night in Pinhão I was more than happy with taking a day tour.  If you are looking for a Douro Valley wine tour, I highly recommend Cooltour Oporto!

You can book your Douro Valley wine tour on the Cooltour Oporto website here .  The tour costs €127.50 including transport, wine tasting, port tasting, lunch and guide, and there is an optional €10 supplement for the river cruise.

Have you tasted any Douro Valley wines? Would you like to take a Douro River cruise? I’d love to hear your thoughts, please leave your comments below.

I don’t drink but would really enjoy the Douro River Cruise… Especially to be able to see the fall colors. Sounds so lovely!

This tour looks fab – you had me at wine and bread. I’ve heard of Port but I’m surprised by all of the different varieties found here. Looks llike a great way to spend a day.

I love the ‘young and dynamic’ vibe of Cooltour Oporto! And what a bonus that Hugo stopped to treat you guys to fresh bread – yum! The Douro River Cruise sounds like it was a fab experience and all the wine, ofcourse

I enjoyed my trip to Portugal last summer so much – and I enjoyed so much Porto there, too. However, I didn’t have the time to explore the Douro Valley; never mind, I’ll be back soon, anyway 😀

The first wine I ever tasted in my life was a Port, so these sweet wines will always have a place in my heart. I love wine tasting tours. The most recent one I took was in Paso Robles, in Central California. Your wine tasting tour in the Douro Valley reminded me about it.

Such a good combination of Wine tasting and a mini Douro River Cruise! A traveler’s life is made! 🙂 Love such tours rich with local experiences.

I’m a huge fan of small tours so this sounds perfect for me and I would love to see the story of wine production in the blue azulejo tiles. The vinho verde, green wine intrigues me, was it good?

Wow girl – you had your share of wine that day. Good thing they had a hotel pickup, even if it didn’t come with a bathroom break. The river cruise sounds lovely and It sounds like a bottle of white was the perfect choice for the day.

It is that time of year when I start to daydream about heading back to Portugal. Thanks for another reason to return. We did port tasting in Porto. But did not think about doing a wine tasting tour as a day trip out of town. Love when tour leaders can accommodate spontaneous stops. Especially for fresh bread. Sounds like you had some nice wines. But also good to get taste tests of honey and olive oil. I am glad you got to visit the Pinhao train station. We loved that stop when we drove in the Douro Valley.

Wine tasting and a mini Douro River Cruise – sounds like something I would definitely enjoy. And that stop at the small village for fresh bread was just charming. Don’t you just love gems as such, lovely.

How Do I Get from Porto to the Douro Valley?

These amazing wine tours from Porto are some of the most popular in the region

When it comes to getting from Porto to the Douro Valley, you have several options. As you probably guessed owing to the valley’s superb location on the Douro River, you can take a boat trip if you wish!

This is easily the most scenic of the following routes since you’ll be surrounded by local villages, lush green mountainsides, and seemingly endless wine vineyards everywhere you look.

The majority of river cruises to the Douro Valley take around 6 hours and depart from the Vila Nova de Gaia’s Quay in Porto and vary in pricing. Some include meals and free wine, whereas some are simply means of transportation.

✔️ By Train

If you prefer to get to the Douro Valley on your own, you have the option of taking the train directly from Porto. This is also one of the most scenic methods as the tracks travel right along the Douro River!

This method takes around 2 hours from Porto’s Campanha Station and is both a scenic and efficient way of getting from Porto to the Douro Valley.

For an in-depth look at the train ride from Lisbon to Porto, read up on the article: Lisbon to Porto Train: Everything You Need to Know

If you wish to reach the Douro Valley by bus from Porto, you’ll need to get your tickets at the Campo 24 de Agosto Station. The journey lasts about 2 hours and is a bit less scenic and less comfortable than the previous two options.

It is usually the cheapest option of getting from Porto to Douro Valley, however.

If you wish to drive yourself or hire a private driver to get you from Porto to the Douro Valley, then a rental car is likely in your future.

This is going to be the most expensive of your options (though the river cruise may be more expensive), but it will get you to Douro Valley in the shortest amount of time in just 1 hour and 15 minutes.

It also provides you the most flexibility since you’ll be on your own schedule and you’ll have more opportunities to stop for pictures along the drive.

You will need to pay attention to toll roads, however, so be sure to carry both cash and credit card on you along the journey.

The Best Season to Experience Wine Tastings and Tours in Porto & Douro

The harvest season of September through October is the best time to take one of these wine tours from Porto

Portugal is known for its comfortable temperatures year-round with just a few outlier days in the summers and winters. This makes it possible to enjoy wine tours and visits to vineyards whenever you plan on visiting Portugal.

However, we have found that the best season to visit Porto and the Douro Valley for wine tours is during the harvest season . This is when the vineyards are overflowing with plump grapes and the foliage just started along the Douro River.

The harvest season months typically fall between September and October , but the season may begin earlier or later depending on how hot and dry the summer months were.

This is also when you’ll get to experience the vineyards with fewer tourists since school has started and most summer breaks are over.

If you have the option of joining one of the below wine tours from Porto in the fall months, do it! You may be able to save a considerable amount on tours in the off-season.

What to Bring With You on a Wine Tour from Porto

porto wine cruise

I’m suuuper guilty of packing things that I never end up using on my travels (I’m working on it…), but I don’t want the same for you.

It’s always difficult to know what you should bring when you’re going on a guided tour, especially if there is no designated “packing list”, so I’ve rounded up just a few items that you’ll be happy to have with you on your wine tour from Porto.

First, a reusable water bottle with a filter . You’re going to be drinking a solid amount of wine, so staying hydrated will help keep you standing and will help curb your hangover the next day. Both are very important…

I like this one since it has a 2-step filtering process and if I’m not super comfortable drinking the tap water, I can just drink it through this bottle and not have to worry.

I’ve brought this same bottle to 1 st , 2 nd , 3 rd , and even 4 th world countries (yes, there is such as thing as a 4th world country!) and I’ve never gotten sick from the water that came through this bottle.

✔️ Just to note … I was filling up this bottle in hotel rooms, bathroom faucets, airport taps, and so forth. It also saved me a lot of money from buying bottled water!

Second, a good camera . The Douro Valley is one of the most beautiful regions in not only Portugal or Europe, but the world. You’re going to witness breathtaking vistas that you’ll surely want some high-quality pictures of.

If you’re using your phone as your primary camera, I also suggest bringing along a spare battery pack if your phone is prone to dying quickly.

Third, sunblock and a hat . Even if you’re visiting during the harvest season, you may be walking through very open fields with no shade cover on a very sunny day in Portugal.

Your best bet is to only bring a little day pack with you. Something that is just large enough to carry your water bottle, the sunblock, your battery pack and charger, and maybe a sweater if the temperature starts to drop.

This backpack is my favorite ! It comes in a multitude of colors, is super affordable, and is very durable and water-resistant. I bring it everywhere I travel!

That’s it! You really won’t need much else. Some spare euros would also be good to tip the guides after the tour.

What to Expect on Your Wine Tour from Porto

On these wine tours from Porto, you can expect to taste numerous types of wines and be surrounded by beautiful scenery

Depending on which of the wine tours from Porto you take, you’ll generally have a good idea of what to expect right after you book.

The tours I have listed below go in-depth on safety and health practices (especially important during Covid-19), whether your tour will have a private guide, where you’ll be picked up and dropped off, the types of wines you’ll be tasting, the vineyards and wineries you’ll be visiting, if meals are included, and so forth.

We only recommend reputable tours that go above and beyond to ensure you have a truly enjoyable experience, and that are fully transparent with what is and is not included.

This way, you can be confident that you’ll know what to expect on your wine tour and you can ensure yourself a pleasant experience.

That being said, there are some beautiful wineries and vineyards just outside of Porto if you find yourself short on time or unable to reach the Douro Valley!

Douro Valley Wine vs. Port Wine

On these wine tours from Porto, you'll get to taste both Port wine and Douro Valley wine

You’re probably wondering… “is there a difference between Port wine and Douro Valley wine?” and the answer is a little bit confusing, but I’m here to help!

Port wines are fortified which means they have a higher alcohol content in comparison to regular wines. The Douro Valley primarily produces Port wines, so you’ll be primarily (if not exclusively) sampling Port wines on any of the above wine tours from Porto.

An average glass of wine typically runs at about 12-15% alcohol, whereas a glass of Port wine will come in around 18-20% alcohol. Needless to say, you won’t need to drink as much wine in Porto to catch a buzz as you would elsewhere.

The name “Port wine” comes from the name of the city: Porto! Port wine, or Porto wine, originates in this region of Portugal and can actually only be legally produced in the Douro Valley.

So, if you take one of the wine tours from Porto that I mentioned, you can guarantee that you’ll be tasting something that you can’t try anywhere else in the world!

Thus, the terms Port wine and Douro Valley wine are practically interchangeable, however, there is a small chance that you may find some other wines in the Douro Valley that are not Port wines.

Where to Stay in Porto

porto wine cruise

When it comes to visiting Portugal’s most popular port city, you have several options for choosing where to stay.

Porto’s most popular neighborhoods include Ribeira , Baixa , São Bento , and Clérigos . This is where you’ll find the popular streets such as the popular Avenida dos Aliados and many restaurants, cafes, bars, and the majority of the city’s nightlife.

Clérigos is Porto’s art district, so if you’re in search of more quiet evenings nearby museums, art exhibits, and galleries, this is a great spot to rest your head for the night!

These neighborhoods are among the best places to stay in Porto since you’ll be nearby public transportation, be close to scenic overlooks, only be a moment’s walk from a restaurant or bar, and you’ll be within walking distance to the city’s most iconic landmarks!

All aboard! 10 bucket-list cruise vacations to take this year

Chelle Koster Walton

Regent Seven Seas' latest Grandeur ship is full of luxurious amenities

Versace tableware in a restaurant that feels like an electrified topsy-turvy forest. A blingy atrium chandelier inspired by a tennis bracelet. Hand-blown glass cherry blossoms and wallflowers designed by Coco Chanel. And a custom-designed Fabergé egg in a nest of pearls on a seven-seas-motif pedestal. The beauty of Regent Seven Seas' Grandeur cruise ship lies in its details.

The luxury cruise line is already known for its high-end amenities, exquisite beauty, and ports of call. There's so much to discover on Grandeur, from the mesmerizing fish-bowl fantasy of the Observation Lounge to restaurants ranging from pan-Asian to French and classic steakhouse. Take a cooking class with chef John Stephano in the Culinary Arts Kitchen one day, and end the night with glam stage productions to inspire the sweetest dreams.

This all comes on a cruise ship where fewer than 750 passengers occupy 372 balcony suites, and 548 crew members are aboard to indulge every whim.

Advertisement Advertisement

The Grandeur is just one cruise ship that excels and elevates the cruising experience, as luxury lines continue to outdo each other with over-the-top vessels, services, and itineraries.

Here, in no particular order (impossible to rank such varied offerings), are 10 bucket-list cruise vacations not to miss this year.

Regent Seven Seas' Grandeur: Spotlight on Fabergé

The first Fabergé egg at sea is part of the Grandeur's art collection

My fascination with Fabergé and Grandeur’s first-ever Egg Objet in residence puts this 10-night, all-inclusive European cruise on my bucket radar. Departing from Rome’s Civitavecchia port on July 1, it hits such ports as Valletta, Malta; Ibiza, Spain; and Marseille, France.

It includes pre-cruise experiences, excursions, private tours, and onboard discussions tied to Fabergé. Onboard, the attraction is the ship’s godmother, Sarah Fabergé, great-granddaughter of legendary artist-jeweler Peter Carl Fabergé, and the first-ever Fabergé egg nested permanently on a cruise ship, dubbed “Journey in Jewels.”

Royal Caribbean International's Icon of the Seas: Eastern Caribbean

Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas rules in the size department

When size matters, here’s a cruise ship so big, it has neighborhoods — eight of them, to be exact. Although, at 1,198 feet long, Royal Caribbean International's Icon of the Seas isn’t just about size. One of 2024's newest cruise ships , it's now in the spotlight, thanks to the high-profile launch with international soccer star Lionel Messi.

To thrill every type of vacationer with theme park largesse, the more than 40 restaurants and entertainment options are unequaled. This Eastern Caribbean cruise departs from Miami with stops in St. Kitts, St. Thomas, and Royal Caribbean International’s private Bahama island, CocoCay.

French Country Waterways' Nenuphar: Canals of Champagne

Nenuphar plies the waterways of Champagne for bubbly and top cuisine

The ultimate in exclusive cruising, French Country Waterways' Nenuphar transports 12 guests on a gustatory voyage through the waterways of France’s most celebrated wine region. Regal staterooms with antique provincial furnishings and innovative cuisine make the onboard experience enough to celebrate. Imagine exploring grand cathedrals and gardens, touring and tasting at prestigious wine cellars, and a special Michelin-rated dinner with wine pairings.

Guests also can enjoy independent walking and bicycling excursions along the canals and into charming villages. The inclusive cruise builds in a fully stocked open bar and wines, many from Grand Cru and Premier Cru vineyards.

Star Clippers' Royal Clipper: Barbados to Lisbon Ocean Crossing

The Royal Clipper is the largest in the Star Clippers fleet

For those enamored by square-rigged sailing ships, a 16-day ocean crossing aboard Star Clippers' Royal Clipper , a Guinness World Record-setting ship for size, is the ultimate. She boasts 42 majestic sails, plus modern amenities to balance with old-world elegance.

There's plenty to fill your days at sea, including water sports, a spa and health club with underwater portholes, social lounges, 19,000 square feet of open deck, and mast-climbing to crow’s nests 75 feet above the water. The one port of call between Barbados and Lisbon allows the opportunity to explore the Azores on the gorgeous and historic Portuguese island of San Miguel.

Scenic Eclipse II: Discover the Kimberley Coastline (Australia)

The Scenic Eclipse II has veranda suites and lots of dining options

Aboard the Scenic Eclipse II , an 11-day itinerary titled, "An Ancient Wilderness Wonderland," travels along the rugged Australian coast from Darwin to Broome. Discover waterfalls, rookery islands, reefs, and nature reserves on inflatable boat excursions, or luxuriate aboard the cruise ship that's outfitted for exploration and pampering.

With a one-to-one crew ratio, you'll want for nothing. As one of the best boutique cruise lines , the 228-passenger ship features veranda suites and 10 dining experiences. On the intellectual side, expect deep-dive lectures and educational programs from a team led by award-winning wilderness expert Mike Cusack.

The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection's Ilma: Maiden Voyage from Monte Carlo to Rome

Ilma's pool deck fits the Ritz-Carlton brand to a tee

The second luxury superyacht for the new Ritz-Carlton brand, which debuts September 2, offers a Mediterranean cruise that takes in medieval hilltop towns along the Livorno countryside, Florence, the French Riviera, and the sophisticated ports of Corsica and Porto Cervo. It sails into the Roman port Civitavecchia eight days later.

With fewer than 450 passengers aboard and a near one-to-one crew ratio, Ilma , like its predecessor Evrima (the first-ever hotel-company cruise ship), is all about personal, exclusive service. Suites with private terraces, a nice mix of fine restaurants and bars, a signature brand spa, plus an onboard marina bring its level of amenities to the Ritz standard.

Lindblad Expeditions' National Geographic Explorer: Antarctica Direct

Kayaking excursions get Explorer guests up-close to Antarctica wildlife

Those looking for high arctic adventure and enrichment with the most luxury and least travel time possible will find it aboard Lindblad Expeditions' National Geographic Explorer , which skips the slow crossing through the Drake Passage with a quick flight.

Built for polar exploration and recently refurbished to bolster its luxe adventure mission, Explorer maximizes its observation experience with high perches and a welcoming bridge. You become part of the scenery with wildlife explorations on kayaking and inflatable excursions, from onboard observation vantages, and even from staterooms outfitted with “Command Center” tools.

The eight-day itinerary begins in Puerto Natales, Chile, with a two-hour flight to King George Island to board the Explorer. Whales, penguins, elephant seals, icebergs, and glaciers headline the breathtaking views, all of which are interpreted by expert team members. Three departure dates are available during the Explorer 2024 season: Nov. 26, Dec. 1, and Dec. 15.

Silversea's Silver Nova: Panama City to Lima

Silversea's on-board S.A.L.T. lab is a foodie paradise

Food and fine dining have always beat at the heart of the cruising experience, but Silversea’s S.A.L.T. (Sea and Land Taste) concept takes culinary cruising to the next level. Developed by a James Beard award-winning editor, the program immerses guests into rare on-shore and on-board foodie fantasies.

On this seven-day cruise aboard the all-suites, 728-passenger Silver Nova , shore excursions visit a cacao hacienda in Ecuador and include a gala with Peruvian dinner in a colonial Lima mansion.

UnCruise's Family Wilderness Adventurer: Juneau to Juneau

Families can take the polar plunge in Glacier Bay

In an informal poll among fellow travel writers about the best Alaskan cruises , UnCruise was a clear winner. They cited its small-boat ability to go where no others have gone before them (apologies to “Star Trek”) and the fact that guests have the option to take daily off-boat excursions, from hiking to kayaking.

In the past, UnCruise excursions into Glacier Bay were age-limited. New in 2024, the cruise line offers a family-friendly itinerary. Specially tailored family activities fill the eight days in renowned Glacier Bay National Park aboard the 60-guest Adventurer . Six Family Explorer cruises are on the docket starting in June.

Viking Sky: World Voyager I

The Explorers' Lounge of the Viking Ocean Ship

Move over, Magellan and Phineas Fogg. They're not the only ones who can go around the world. You can too!

Board Viking Sky to circumnavigate the globe — the ultimate cruise. A Dec. 19 departure from Fort Lauderdale ends up in New York City three months later. In between, you’ll visit 37 countries with the possibility of 83 guided, culturally immersive tours, from Panama and Los Angeles to Tahiti, New Zealand, Vietnam, and Turkey.

Although more commonly aligned with river cruises , Viking boasts ocean liners with the same small-ship (930 guests max) nimbleness and sleek, Scandinavian design. Viking Sky’s staterooms garner praise for their private verandas and understated elegance.

Veresch is the man! AIM.

People will tell you how to call a taxi from Rechnoy.

There are small bonuses for ground transportation - you can see something on the way, a kind of a little excursion.

Main problem on the way: traffic jams which you can not calculate; once in late November on weekend night I had such a problem to get to the city from the Sheremetevo airport along the same road - never could imagine; drivers taking clients from the downtown area to Sheremetevo now are to bear in mind 2-3 hours. Choose the underground!

> Main problem on the way: traffic jams which you can not calculate

Having driven there from the ring road all the way to the center today I'm afraid I have to revoke that statement. It was quite dense there, not standing still, but slow in places. Took about 20-30 minutes from Rechnoy to Belorussky (should have taken five at most).
