The Den , sometimes referred to as The New Den , is the 20,146 capacity home ground of the infamous Millwall Football Club.

Located in the South Bermondsey area of South-East London, the stadium opened back in 1993 at an estimated cost of £16 million.

Millwall Stadium Guide

The den history.

The Den was the first stadium to be built in the aftermath of the Hillsborough Disaster and subsequent publication of the Taylor Report in 1990. The previous stadium, known as The Old Den had  previously been home to the club for over 83 years, however the costs of redevelopment weren’t deemed to be unfeasible by Chairman Reg Burr.

Originally the club announced plans to construct a new 25,000-30,000 capacity stadium within the Senegal Fields area, however the club couldn’t acquire the requisite funding, and had to scale down their new plans slightly.

Identifying a patch of land less than a quarter of a mile away from the original ground within South Bermondsey, the club quickly gained planing permission and construction began shortly after in 1991.

Costing an estimated £16 million upon opening, the inaugural fixture was held on 4th August 1993 against Portuguese giants Sporting Lisbon with the opening ceremony conducted by MP John Smith, who at the time was the leader of the Labour Party.

As the first new football ground to be built in London since 1937, and an example of urban generation, the leader of the opposition didn’t of course miss the opportunity to score a few points with the public.

Millwall’s new stadium was initially known as The New Den, to distinguish it from The Old Den however having been opened now for nearly 25 years now, fans usually just refer to it as The Den.

Whilst the new stadium has failed to propel Millwall to the heights of Premier League, the club did make an appearance at the Millennium Stadium for the 2004 FA Cup Final, although The Lions were predictably outclassed by Manchester United .

With the average attendance generally around 50% of the ground’s capacity there are currently no plans to expand the stadium, although if the club should ever wish to do so then the corners could easily be filled in.

Matchday Experience

The den away end.

“Millwall Away”. The two words which used to strike fear into the heart of every football fan in England.

Thankfully a lot has changed since the 1980s and football fans can now safely attend a match at The Den without getting their head caved in with a brick. The legacy of Millwall and its “naughty” supporters lives on however with the Metropolitan Police still opting to dispatch large amounts of “old bill” to the ground.

This however works out well and ensures that The Den is almost as hospitable to visiting fans as every other away ground in England.

Away fans usually have the 4,000 or so capacity North Stand to themselves, however the typical allocation of tickets restricts the visiting supporters to the second-tier which arguably results in better views of the action.

Like the area of the ground itself, the concourse is pretty much a no-thrills affair with unadulterated concrete the backdrop of choice for everything ranging from the kiosks to the toilets.

Best Pubs near ground

There really aren’t any pubs around Millwall’s Den according to local listings, and any which are, are unlikely to be suitable for visiting supporters.

This means that traveling supporters have the option of either drinking exclusively inside the stadium or going for a few beverages at London Bridge Station which is where the connecting train is for most fans.

One of the more popular options for those seeking a pub with a bit of character is The Shiprights Arms on Tooley Street which boasts of having an “original shipwrights mural”, with the 17th century George Inn another candidate, as is The Slug and Lettuce chain pub both of which are on Borough High street.

Food - Places to eat

Again, pretty much the same as above applies to the food section. Built up in an area which is far from commercialised, there aren’t a ton of option with Greggs and Reema Fish & Chips the best bet outside South Bermondsey Station.

London Bridge on other hand pretty much has a lot more choice, with a slight bias towards sit-down restaurants rather than fast food joints.

Millwall Club Shop

Exterior of Millwall's club shop

The club store at the Den is known as the Lions Store and was recently refurbished at the beginning of the 2012/2013 season to give it a more contemporary feel. The new store stocks an excellent range of Millwall Merchandise, and is second only to the club’s official online store .

The opening times are as follows:

  • Monday – Saturday: 9.00 am – 5.00 pm
  • Sundays: 10.00 am – 4.00 pm
  • Matchdays: a few hours before kick-off

How to get to The Den

Where is the den.

The Den is located South East of the capital adjacent to the railway line serving London Bridge, within the South Bermondsey – London Borough of Southwark.

The Den’s Stadium Address for satnav is as follows:

  • Zampa Road, London, SE16 3LN.

Located in East London, Millwall Football Club are pressed for space and as a result there are no club owned parking facilities for supporters located at The New Den.

Fans are instead recommended to travel by rail or official coach of the visiting team.

Train - Public Transport

South Bermondsey railway station is located exactly half a mile from The Den which will take the average fan less than 10 minutes on foot. Exit the station on Ilderton Road turning left and following this road as it bends round until you can turn left onto Zampa Road which will take you under the tracks through the tunnel to Millwall’s Ground.

London Underground

The Den isn’t really served by a tube station with Surrey Quays on the orange London Overground Line 1 mile away (20 minutes) and Bermondsey on the silver Jubilee Line 1.2 miles (25 minutes) being the two closest stops.

By all means you can travel to these stops and walk but South Bermondsey overground station is the easiest route for most.

Hotels Near The Den

Located in an old industrial area which is yet to under go lots of gentrification there aren’t any hotels near to The Den. Your best is to hop on the train at South Bermondsey to London Bridge.

Although expensive there is a lot choice such as Premier Inn Southwark, The Bermondsey Square Hotel and Holiday Inn Express.

Remember that you are in London and once you get the overground to London Bridge you can practically get the tube anywhere.

Millwall Stadium Tour – The Den

Millwall Stadium Tour - What is it like to take a tour of the Millwall FC Ground, The Den? I share photos of the stadium, the changing rooms, the VIP lounge, players tunnel and pitch side.

The Den is home to the iconic English football team, Millwall FC.  If you’re in London you may consider taking a Millwall stadium tour.  Reasons to take a Millwall stadium tour include;

  • You’re a huge Millwall fan
  • See the home of an iconic English football team
  • Receive a warm Millwall welcome
  • Enjoy a friendly, more personal stadium tour
  • Take a selfie in the blue Millwall double decker bus
  • Visit the official Millwall Club Shop

Visit the Millwall FC website to check the Millwall stadium tour availability.  Millwall are a friendly club who are quick to respond therefore I recommend you call or email them with any special requests of specific dates.

Millwall Stadium Address – How to get to The Den from Central London

Millwall Stadium Tour - The Den, Millwall FC Ground - address

Millwall Double Decker Bus

Millwall Stadium Tour - The Den, Millwall FC Ground - Double Decker Bus

When you first arrive at the Den, you’ll see the iconic blue Millwall double decker bus.  As a matter of fact, this is parked outside the stadium and you don’t need to take a Millwall stadium tour to photograph it.  Nevertheless, as you’re at the stadium, you may as well take the tour or check out the club shop.  The text on the side of the bus reads ‘Let ’em all come down to the Den’.

Home Team Dressing Room

Millwall Stadium Tour - The Den, Millwall FC Ground - Home team dressing room

One of the first things you’ll notice when you enter the stadium are images of lions everywhere.  Millwall gained the nickname back in 1899 when they beat favorites Aston Villa in the FA Cup.  The media called them, the lions of the south which eventually became the lions.  Before, they were nicknamed the dockers as many of their fans would load and unload ships.  When you visit the home team dressing room, there will be all the players shirts on display.  You’ll be able to take your picture with your favorite players shirt.  As well as the lush changing rooms, there are some excellent shower, massage and warm up facilities in these dressing rooms.  The away team however, do not have access to these facilities.

Away Team Dressing Room

Millwall Stadium Tour - The Den, Millwall FC Ground - Away team dressing room

The away team dressing rooms are small, plain, uninspiring with small bathroom facilities.  Millwall FC have an excellent home advantage even before their loyal fans intimidate the away team on the pitch!

Players Tunnel

Millwall Stadium Tour - The Den, Millwall FC Ground - Players Tunnel

As you walk down the players tunnel you know exactly which team you’re playing against.  The Millwall logos and lions are all on the players minds even before they reach the pitch with 20,000 Millwall fans chanting.  As part of the tour, you can take the famous walk down the players tunnel.

Pitchside and Dugout

Millwall Stadium Tour - The Den, Millwall FC Ground - pitchside and dugout

On the Millwall stadium tour you’ll visit pitch side as well as the dugouts.  You’re welcome to take your photo in the managers seat.  Another good location for a photo is with ‘The Den’ logo in the background.  Famous managers who have used these dugouts include, Mick Mccarthy, Dennis Wise.  Another interesting fact is that Claudio Ranieri sat here in what would be his last match in charge of Leicester City.

Millwall FC Ground – The Den

Millwall Stadium Tour - The Den, Millwall FC Ground

The Den has a capacity of over 20,000 seats.  An interesting fact is that this was the first all seater stadium to be built in England after the Hillsborough disaster.  Before this, stadiums could have standing areas.  The south stand is called the dockers stand in honor of their historic roots with London dockers.  There’s also a Barry Kitchener stand named after the Millwall legend from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.  I think a photo with the iconic ‘The Den’ logo in the background makes an excellent memory of your Millwall stadium tour.  Even more so if you’re wearing a Millwall FC shirt.

A Stadium with a View

Millwall Stadium Tour - The Den, Millwall FC Ground - Stadium with a view of the Shard

One of the most popular landmarks in London is the Shard.  From the Millwall stadium you can see the Shard.  This shows how close the stadium is to central London.  As a matter of fact, the Shard looks better from a distance, so you enjoy the view!

Millwall Stadium Tour VIP Suite

Millwall Stadium Tour - The Den, Millwall FC Ground - VIP Suite

If you watch a Millwall football match as a VIP supporter, you’ll gain access to the VIP suite as well as the best seats in the stadium.  On the Millwall stadium tour, you can visit the VIP suite and have a feel of this experience.  Be sure to look down as the carpet is a customised blue Millwall carpet which features the iconic lions.

Millwall FC History

Millwall Stadium Tour - The Den, Millwall FC Ground - Millwall Museum and History

In the VIP lounge is a huge board showing the history of Millwall FC.  In fact, I would say this is as close to a Millwall FC museum as you will get.  For those diehard Millwall fans, there’s a lot to learn about the history of Millwall.

Millwall FC Club Shop

Millwall Stadium Tour - The Den, Millwall FC Ground - Millwall Club Store (Lions Store)

If you take the stadium tours of the big English football teams you may find the club shop on the expensive side.  The Millwall Lions Store however, offers excellent value Millwall merchandise which is an extra reason to check out the store.  You could even buy some merchandise to wear during your  tour, this would really enhance your Millwall stadium tour photos!

Enjoy your Millwall Stadium Tour

Enjoy your Millwall stadium tour, home of one of the most iconic and historic English football teams.  You’re guaranteed a more personal and fun stadium tour here in comparison to the big London teams and stadiums.  Visit the  Millwall FC website for contact information.

Take a  West Ham stadium tour , Millwall’s biggest rivals.  Alternatively, visit Wembley , home of the England football team.

The Den: Millwall

millwall stadium tour dates

Andrew H / Flickr.com

Millwall Football Club have long been associated with The Den, though the less observant football fan might not realise that the one they play their games in now is different from the one they played at for 83 years. That is, perhaps, because the new ground is also called The Den, though for a time it was known as The New Den as well as Senegal Fields and The New London Stadium.

At one point it seemed as though Millwall would never find a permanent home. Between 1885, when the club was formed, and 1910, when they moved into the original Den, the club played at no less than four different grounds. Their first home was little more than a waste ground, whilst their second was an area of land behind The Lord Nelson Pub, which became known as The Lord Nelson Ground. The Athletics Ground was up next and was the first purpose-built stadium that they’d played in. They had to move out of that when the Millwall Dock Company wanted to use the space as a timber yard.

Most grounds built from the late ‘80s onwards tend to follow the ‘Bowl Style’ design, but this was eschewed at Millwall in favour of the more traditional ‘English Style’ of having four distinct stands on each edge of the pitch. Each stand has it’s own unique personality, so here’s a little bit of information about each:

  • The North Stand – This is a two-tiered stand with a capacity of 4,000. Ordinarily it is used solely for away supporters, though in league games they rarely fill more than one section of it.
  • The Dockers Stand – This two-tiered stand is named in honour of the club’s working-class docker fanbase. The tiers are separated by a row of executive boxes, ironically.
  • The Cold Blow Lane Stand – This is the home of Millwall’s noisiest supporters and is notable by the yellow seat that spell out ‘The Den’. It also has two tiers.
  • The Barry Kitchener Stand – Named in honour of the club’s record appearance holder, this is the main stand in the ground and houses the press box, executive areas and the dugouts. It also has two tiers and is home to the club’s family section.

Millwall Ticket Prices

Ticket prices for Millwall games are categorised into either Category A, Category B, or Category C. They then charge a different amount of money depending on where in the ground you’d like to sit, and then by how old you are. It sounds more complicated than it is.

The club also offers cheaper tickets for those who are Members of the official supporters group, so do bear that in mind if you’re likely to attend matches regularly. Here are the cheapest and most expensive tickets for adults and concessions in each category, presuming you are not a member:

  • Category A: £32 – £36 / £23 – £26
  • Category B: £29 – £33 / £20 – £23
  • Category C: £27 – £31 / £18 – £21

How To Get Millwall Tickets

Most club’s nowadays have excellent websites from which you can buy tickets and Millwall is no exception. If you’d rather speak to a real person then you can always call the ticket office or even drop in in person, with the office being open form 9.30am until 5pm Monday to Friday or from 10am on Saturdays when there’s a home game on.

Getting To The Den

The Den is located in South-East London, so you have all of the travel options available to you that heading to the nation’s capital offers everyone. Here are some of the more typical routes you’ll probably want to look at:

Train – London is brilliantly easy to get around by train thanks to the excellent Underground service and the national rail system that runs throughout the city. South Bermondsey Railway Station is only five minutes walk from the ground, whilst New Cross and New Cross Gate stations are both around fifteen minutes walk away. On the Underground you can get the East London Line to Surrey Quays or New Cross Gate which are both fifteen minutes away, or you can head to Canada Water on the Jubilee Line and your journey will increase to just twenty minutes.

Bus – The bus service in London is second only to the Underground, so there are options aplenty. Numbers 21, 53, 172, 1, 381, 47, 188 and 225 all call within a short walking distance of The Den.

Car – Form the North you’ll want to head to London and get on the A1/M1 then the A2 until you see signs for the ground. From the South take the A20 and A21 towards London, following signs for Surrey Quays when you get to New Cross. From the East take the A2 to New Cross then follow the instructions from the South, whilst if you’re coming from the West you’ll want the M4 to the M3 then the A205 South Circular. Follow signs to Clapham on the A3 then to New Cross.

By Air – London is awash with airports, from the behemoth of Heathrow through to the slightly more private London City Airport. The former is around fourteen miles from the ground, whilst the latter is by far the closest at just five miles.

Taxi – As the main train station in London for internal arrivals is probably Euston, we’ll give you taxi information from there. A journey to The Den will take about half an hour and cost in the region of £30. Traffic in London can be…tricky, though, so expect to pay a lot more if you get caught up in it.

Parking Near The Den

There is no official parking at the ground and there are often significantly troublesome on-street parking restrictions in the local area. There might be one of two unofficial parking areas around the place but be aware that you’ll be parking at your own risk. Better to use public transport.

The Den is starting to show its age a little bit nowadays, but then it was built over twenty years ago so it seems a little churlish to complain about that. It’s reasonably clean and pleasant throughout and the views are pretty good from virtually everywhere. There are plenty of kiosks to buy food and drinks as well as places to purchase a match programme or place a bet before the action gets underway.

Hospitality

millwall stadium tour dates

There are a host of excellent hospitality options at The Den, from individual match day experiences through to season-long executive memberships. Here’s some details on some of the choices available to you:

  • Executive Boxes – With space for 10 people, the boxes offer stunning panoramic views of the pitch, payable food and drink services, and a dedicated member of staff looking after you.
  • The 1885 Lounge – Enjoy a two-course meal before the game as well as padded seats to watch it from. You get half time and full time refreshments too as part of the Gold package. The Platinum package upgrades the meal to 3 courses as well as a welcome drinks reception, the chance to meet club legends and even vote for man of the match.
  • The Chairman’s Suite – As well as exclusive access to the Chairman’s Room you’ll also get a three-course pre-match meal with wine, a welcome drink upon arrival and complimentary drinks. There will be refreshments at half-time and full-time as well as seating in the Director’s Box and an appearance from a club legend.

Private Hire

The Den is an excellent location in South-East London for all of your conferencing needs. The versatility of the club’s lounges and executive boxes means that you can host a range of events at the home of Millwall FC, such as training sessions, conferences with breakout rooms, team-building sessions and breakfast meetings. The suites are also available for private events and can hold anywhere from 2 to 500 guests. You can even get married at The Den if you so wish.

Stadium Tours & Museum

Millwall do run tours of The Den, though the schedule isn’t clear. Tickets cost £15 for adults, £10 for concessions, and £8 for juniors, and you will You’ll see the dressing rooms, the press area, the Director’s Box, the players’ tunnel and the dugouts.

You can book Legends Tours too, which are, unsurprisingly, guided by a club legend, and these cost £22, £15, and £10 respectively, but tickets for all tours are £2 cheaper for season ticket holders.

About Millwall

millwall stadium tour dates

Millwall are an exceptionally interesting team in the Football League, given that they’ve kept the name of the area they were formed in despite not having played in that area since 1910. The club was founded in 1885 as Millwall Rovers and spent the first 25 years of its existence moving from place to place around the Isle of Dogs. The club then settled at The Den in New Cross but never lost sight of its origins as a club from the working class Docklands of the city.

The club has reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup on four different occasions, in 1900, 1903, 1937 and 2013. That does not include the time they reached the final in 2004, eventually losing 3-0 to Manchester United. The fact that they reached the final meant that they qualified for European competition for the first time in the club’s history, playing in the UEFA Cup in the 2004-2005 season. Despite their success in the lower leagues over the years, the club is probably best known to many because of the hooliganism of its fans. Their rivalry with West Ham, for example, has been portrayed on screen in films such as Green Street.

The Den History

millwall stadium tour dates

Having been the nomads of the Isle Of Dogs for 25 years, the club made the choice to settle in The Den in 1910 and lasted 83 years before moving to a new ground. Just to confuse supporters of both their own club and other clubs, Millwall decided to call their new stadium The Den, too. It was actually the first new all-seater ground to be completed in the wake of the Taylor Report into the Hillsborough disaster and was designed with crowd management at the forefront of its structuring.

When the initial plans for the new stadium were announced it was hoped that it would have a capacity of about 30,000. Millwall couldn’t afford to meet the costs necessary for that capacity, however, so they settled for just over 20,000 instead. The new ground was just a quarter of a mile away from the old one and was officially opened by John Smith MP, the leader of the Labour Party at the time.

Future Developments

millwall stadium tour dates

The future of The Den was somewhat up in the air for a long time. Lewisham Council had been selling a lot of the land around the ground to development companies, but in Feb 2020 it was announced that The Den was safe, allowing the club to get underway with redevelopment plans.

The hope is to create a new stadium fit for the Premier League and housing up to 34,000 supporters, as well as creating a vibrant new public plaza for the community, affordable housing, and even a brand new overground station – not to mention hopefully shaking off some off the stigma associated with the club.

Millwall – The New Den

The New Den is an all-seater stadium, with a capacity of 20,146. Opened in August 1993, the stadium is less than a quarter of a mile away from the original Den, which had been the home of Millwall FC for 83 years.

With a build cost of £16 million, it was the first new football stadium to be constructed for a professional team in London since 1937, and the first all-seater stadium to be completed after the Taylor Report on the Hillsborough disaster.

The new Den is made up of four, fair sized two tiered stands that are of the same height. The corners of the ground are open, apart from one corner where there is a large video screen.

Several fans have reported that despite a cursory search on entry to the ground, the game was interrupted by sections of both home and away fans throwing missiles at each other and onto the pitch. This was a really enjoyable tour. Our tour guide Westie was very informative, knowledgeable and funny, with plenty of anecdotes. The 90-minute tour went by quickly and would be very entertaining even if you don’t support Millwall. Highly recommended.

How Milwaukee Brewers' American Family Field became one of country's top concert stadiums

millwall stadium tour dates

In 2023, American Family Field had its biggest year ever for concerts — and it was one of the top-grossing stadiums for concerts in the world.

It may be the new normal.

After hosting four concerts last year — including the first two-night stadium run ever in Milwaukee, with Morgan Wallen, and shows with George Strait and Pink that both broke attendance records — American Family Field is ready to host four more in 2024.

The first two are April 12 and 13, the stadium tour kickoff for country superstar Luke Combs. Kenny Chesney returns in June, this time with Zac Brown Band ; and Green Day is coming in August with the Smashing Pumpkins.

Going forward, depending on routing and the teams' schedule, the Brewers could book four to six major tours a year, predicted Jason Hartlund, who oversees concerts at the stadium as executive vice president — chief commercial officer for the Brewers.

“We’ve really bent over backwards for artists and production teams to be as hospitable and as easy a process (to stage a concert) as possible,” Hartlund said. “That reputation is starting to get out into the marketplace. It’s helped us.”

Last year, it helped 43,000-seat American Family Field become the 19th top-grossing stadium for concerts in the United States, and 35th in the world, according to concert trade magazine Pollstar, ranking prominently among football stadiums with larger seating capacities. The stadium sold 178,107 concert tickets, collectively grossing $35.4 million.

It's a remarkable development for a 23-year-old stadium in a market Milwaukee's size, especially since there are two stadiums in must-play Chicago — the Cubs' Wrigley Field and the Bears' home field (for now), Soldier Field — that routinely draw Milwaukee fans for shows.

But between the growth of the stadium tour sector of the concert industry — and the $500 million stadium funding bill signed into law by Gov. Tony Evers last December — American Family Field's future as a live music destination is promising.

"Philosophically, when we enter into an agreement with a sports team or stadium, we want to know that they want to be good partners," said Charlie Goldstone, co-president of Live Nation-backed Madison promoter FPC Live, which handled the Pink and Wallen concerts last year and is promoting Green Day's this year.

"It's more than just financial. Will they help promote the shows? Will the team be amenable to uses of the field and the locker rooms? When an artist gets there will they feel welcome? … With the Brewers, the answer is always yes."

Years with few concerts at the Milwaukee Brewers' ballpark

For much of the stadium's existence, a big concert each year wasn't a guarantee. After it opened in 2001, Miller Park (renamed American Family Field in 2021) nabbed a few tours its first few years, including Strait, *NSYNC and Bruce Springsteen.

But after 2003, the stadium went a decade without hosting tours, although there were some special events, including Farm Aid in 2010, and birthday bashes for Harley-Davidson and Miller Brewing.

Then in 2013, Kenny Chesney headlined a stadium tour stop at Miller Park for the first time, the beginning of what's become a fruitful relationship with one of the stadium's most reliable promoters, the Messina Touring Group.

In addition to Chesney's headlining shows at the Brewers ballpark in 2016, 2018, 2022 and now this year, Messina brought Ed Sheeran to the stadium in 2018. The promoter also was responsible for Eric Church's second stadium-headlining show ever in 2022, and for the Strait show last year — one of only eight dates the country legend did in 2023 with Chris Stapleton.

In an interview with the Journal Sentinel last year, Louis Messina, head of AEG-backed Messina Touring Group, said doing shows at the stadium was "comfortable" and that the venue itself was "fan-friendly."

"Some stadiums, it's like pulling teeth to do a show there. In Milwaukee, it's not like that," Messina said. "From the top with management all the way down to the groundskeepers, they work with us and make it easy for us to produce shows."

"We're not just another tenant in the building. … That's really important, not only to me and the artists but to my team, box office people, production people — everybody."

After Chesney broke the tour drought, Live Nation, the world's largest concert promoter, put Paul McCartney and One Direction shows in the stadium, in 2013 and 2015.

A gamechanger for Wisconsin concerts in 2018

Then in 2018, Live Nation became a majority stakeholder of long-running Madison promoter Frank Productions, parent to FPC Live — and the Brewers took notice.

"The ballpark said they wanted to be in business, and it opened up a new level of shows that were not coming to the state," FPC Live co-president Scott Leslie said. By that time, touring was a rapidly growing business at other ballparks, Leslie noted, including Wrigley Field and Fenway Park in Boston.

"The Brewers saw that this was being done successfully among their peers, so why not them?" Leslie said.

FPC Live brought the only Billy Joel Midwestern concert of 2019 to American Family Field, and a Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Poison and Joan Jett package to the ballpark in 2022. Aside from when the pandemic derailed the touring industry for most of 2020 and much of 2021, the ballpark has hosted at least one stadium tour every year since 2018, and nearly all of them have been at capacity.

"Success breeds success," Hartlund said. "Where artists may have been hesitant to come to the Milwaukee market in the past, we have a catalog of success that tours can play Chicago and Milwaukee. … And because we have had success with shows in the past people are getting more comfortable moving off weekends."

Last year's Pink show at American Family Field, for instance, was on a Monday — and it stopped at Wrigley Field the prior Saturday. But the Milwaukee date was still a smash, with Pink breaking an attendance record at the stadium, performing for 46,644 people.

Leslie suggests that Pink's past success in the market — her Fiserv Forum show in 2019 was the top-grossing concert at the arena that year — likely gave her team more confidence to book a show in the city's biggest venue.

"With Fiserv Forum, there's a brand-new arena with a high volume of really amazing shows that let the market open up in a bigger way," FPC Live's Goldstone said.

The $524 million Milwaukee Bucks arena opened in 2018, bringing more shows nearly every year than the Bradley Center ever did during a single year. And the American Family Insurance Amphitheater at Maier Festival Park has seen a surge of shows, too, following a $51.3 million renovation, reaching its highest volume since 2004. And even though the amphitheater has nabbed some tour dates routed through other stadiums, Hartlund suggests their booking ability has benefited.

"The rising tide lifts all ships," Hartlund said. "Having a new arena is great for the city, having a revamped American Family Insurance Amphitheater at Summerfest is fantastic. The more shows we put in here, the better."

Stadium concert tours are surging around the world

Hartlund says the Brewers have been more aggressive about concert bookings coming out of the pandemic, driven not just by a desire to grow non-baseball revenue, but a growing comfort that field conditions won't be affected by more events.

And there are significantly more events at stadiums around the globe, which the Brewers are also benefiting from. Grosses from the world’s top 100 stadiums for concerts were up 35% in 2023 to $3.62 billion, according to Pollstar. The number of tickets sold for those tours also increased 22.2% to 29.1 million.

Since touring resumed after the pandemic, Dave Brooks, senior director of live and touring for Billboard, estimates that at least an artist or two in different genres, including country, pop and Latin music, have been able to rise up to the stadium level every year, while some artists have experimented with packages to help fill stadium seats, like Chesney is doing with Zac Brown Band and Green Day with the Pumpkins.

"The financial incentives are obvious," Brooks said. "You can get a much larger audience for the fraction of the price it costs you to do multiple arena shows. The costs are somewhat higher for a stadium concert than an arena show, but the increase in attendance is like double depending on how big the stadium is, and you can make almost double the money."

Promoters also like the "huge consumer marketing databases" that MLB and NFL teams have from selling tickets to their games to help them sell shows, Brooks continued, and fans have shown with their wallets that they don't mind the stadium concert experience.

"The use of video boards and technology makes the concert feel more intimate," Brooks said of more recent stadium tours.

New stadium developments could lead to more concerts

Hartlund is hopeful that the Brewers' new centerfield scoreboard — one of the largest in Major League Baseball — will appeal to some promoters. As of the Journal Sentinel interview, he was unsure if any tours would use the scoreboard this year, but Strait and Stapleton did last year.

And while the team's new QR code-based parking payment system was temporarily suspended due to technical issues for opening day — and will not be in operation for the Combs shows — Hartlund said that, when it's up and running, it will cut down on backups into the ballpark. Traffic into the park has triggered some backlash in the past, most notably for Sheeran's show in 2018, prompting the team to issue an apology.

And then there's the $500 million public-funding plan for the ballpark to support long-term renovations and improvements, which will include "winterizing" the venue so it could operate beyond its typical April-to-October timeframe.

The stadium's retractable roof has already been an asset — Hartlund suggests it was a key reason why Combs opted to kick off the tour there this year — but following renovations, American Family Field theoretically could host concerts in March or November.

And yes, some stadium tours have been routed through the Midwest in November; Stapleton and Strait played the indoor U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis in November 2021, and Joel played the NFL stadium with Stevie Nicks last November.

"Promoters are aware of the plan for that to take place," Hartlund said, although a definitive timeline has yet to be set. "It's all about the comfort levels for the artist and the fans. If the building is winterized and heated to appropriate levels, it's no different from an arena show in November or March."
