PortMiami Cruise Terminal Information

Last updated on March 7th, 2024 at 01:17 pm

Located in the vibrant city of Miami, PortMiami is one of the world's busiest cruise terminals. With its modern facilities and convenient access to the city's renowned beaches, vibrant nightlife, and cultural attractions, it offers an exciting departure point for cruises to the Caribbean and beyond. Explore the diverse neighborhoods, savor the flavors of Latin cuisine, and soak up the sun-drenched atmosphere before setting sail from this iconic departure point.

Miami is considered the Cruise Capital of the world , with over 7 million cruise passengers visiting it’s port each year. There are numerous place to shop , along with restaurants and things to do near the Port of Miami . Cruises originating from Miami embark from the Port of Miami which is located at 1015 N. America Way, Miami, Florida.

Miami International Apirport is just eight miles away from PortMiami. The port caters to travelers with on-port parking and easy access to public transportation, taxes and rideshares.

PortMiami is situated on Biscayne Bay and supports 335,000 direct and indirect jobs. The port also processes cargo through its ports.

The port’s recent infrastructure expansion added three new cruise terminals with ongoing construction of future facilities. The port is also finalizing its Shore Power Program that will give the port the capability to plug three cruise ships into shore power. This will allow a cruise ship to turn off their primary engines while docked, reducing air emissions.

Directions to Port of Miami

Driving from the north, you may take I-95 and exit at 3B Bayside. Keep going south and turn left into Northeast 5th Street, where you will eventually get to the bridge into the Port of Miami.

From the south, take I-95 North and take Northwest 2nd Street exit. Keep going and then turn right toward Northwest 5th Street. From here you will see the Port of Miami Bridge which will take you into the port entrance.

If you are travelling in from the Interstate, look for the signs for the PortMiami tunnel. It’s a quick and free way to get directly to the port without having to get off the Interstate and drive in downtown Miami.

Royal Caribbean’s Terminal A

Cruise Terminal A – the Crown of Miami –  was built specifically for Royal Caribbean in 2018, enabling it to handle Royal’s largest ships with the latest technology for an expedited check-in process.

Royal Caribbean’s Icon of Seas has its home port in Miami. The Titanic was once the world’s largest cruise ship. Over five times the size of the Titanic, the Icon of the Seas is over 1000 feet long and 20 decks tall.

Its 55 foot onboard waterfall is the largest waterpark at sea. Powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), the Icon of the Seas will reduce its impact on port of Miami, but will also have a shoreside power connection that will allow it to plug into the electric grid while docked in port.

Norwegian’s Terminal B

Cruise Terminal B – the Pearl of Miami – was built for Norwegian Cruise Line and opened in 2021 and can accommodate ships carrying as many as 5000 passengers.

Miami Cruise Terminals C, D & E have been built with mega-ships holding up to 5000 passengers. In order to move passengers through the terminal as quickly as possible, the highest-technology in screening is available, as well as a conveyor system, similar to an airport, to retrieve your luggage when you disembark.

Carnival’s Terminal F

Carnival’s expansion to Miami’s Terminal F broke ground in early 2021 in preparation for Carnival’s newest ship set to debut in 2022 – the Carnival Celebration.  Here’s a video of the proposed terminal renovations:

Terminal G is one of Miami’s landmarks with the iconic sails:

Miami Cruise Terminal J was built with smaller luxury cruise line passengers in mind – Azamara, Regent Seven Seas & Oceania.

Virgin Voyages Terminal V

Opened late 2021 with the arrival of Virgin’s Scarlett Lady, this state of the art terminal  – Palm Grove – is located on the north west side of the port (see link to map below).

MSC’s Terminal AA/AAA

MSC has broken ground on their new cruise terminal slated to open in 2023 and will be able to hold up to three ships at once. Here’s a rendering of the new terminal, built in partnership with Fincantieri (who is currently building the MSC Seashore at their shipyard in Italy).

Miami Weather

Miami enjoys warm weather all year ’round, with highs reaching into the 70s and 80s. Hats and sunblock are highly recommended even during cloudy days. The humidity can be a bit stifling during the summer months, particularly for those accustomed to dry heat. June is the rainiest month of the year.

Cruise passengers traveling to Miami should be aware that the city–as is the entire state of Florida–is located in the hurricane belt. Because storms and hurricanes are common during the months between early June and the end of November, it is advisable to purchase travel insurance when traveling to and from the area during this period.

Oasis Of The Seas Itineraries

Oasis of the seas review, review of oasis of the seas.

The 2009-built Oasis of the Seas cruise ship is the 1st Oasis-class Royal Caribbean liner, with sisterships Allure OTS (2010) and the bigger ( currently world's largest passenger liners ) Harmony OTS (2016), Symphony OTS (2018), Wonder OTS (2022) and Utopia OTS (2024).

The vessel (IMO number 9383936) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 311020600) and registered in Nassau .

History - construction and ownership

Royal Caribbean International (RCI) is a US passenger shipping company, trademarked travel brand and subsidiary owned by Royal Caribbean Group (RCG/shipowner). RCI was established in 1968 and currently has over 1/5 of the worldwide cruise market. RCI also has RCG's largest fleet by both vessel number and GT tonnage (ship sizes and capacities).

All RCI liners have names ending with "of the Seas".

Royal Caribbean Oasis-class ship (raster image)

The 5600-passenger ship Oasis OTS is one of the largest cruise liners in the world . Oasis has been the most anticipated newbuild since Cunard's Queen Mary 2 . Her innovations, such as the first-ever Boardwalk and Central Park at sea, are already legendary. Innovations on Oasis of the Seas are, by no means, limited to passenger-friendly advances. Royal Caribbean also introduced a number of new technical and environmental tools which allow the cruise to be more efficient and eco-responsible.

The experience starts with a walk across a plank into the jaws of an anglerfish and boarding one of the specially-designed mats. Slide mats are coloured in black, each with an opening for the feet and a strap to hold on to. Follows the vertical drop (27-degree) some 92 ft / 28 m down to the Boardwalk. There's a secret fore-located/bow-facing sundeck on Deck 14 , accessed from the forward lifts by walking through the hallways. The large sundeck is flanked by two "bridge wings" (jetting off the ship's both sides/bow starboard and portside). Both bridge wings are open-air and with great seaviews but are also often very windy.

There are two "secret balconies" positioned close to the aft elevators on Deck 9 . Both balconies are small (each is furnished with a table and two chairs), overlook Central Park and are some of the best points to view the entire neighborhood.

Aft on Deck 6/Boardwalk  there is a stern-facing viewing area accessed via a path that circles around the AquaTheater. This "secret area" offers great views of the ship’s wake (trace on the water surface), also provides great views of the entire neighborhood and has a shuffleboard.

By the Jogging Track (aft on Deck 5/Promenade ) there are several small seating areas fitted with all-weather Adirondack chairs (positioned near the railings).

Oasis Of The Seas Wiki

Oasis OTS is Royal Caribbean's first Oasis-Class liner, with sisterships Allure , Harmony , Symphony and Wonder . Oasis-class currently represents the world's biggest passenger ship design, however, Oasis OTS happened to be the smallest in this series - although with just 50 mm (~2 inches) shorter than Allure. There was a competition for proposing the best name for the hulls of both vessels. The sister hulls were named at a dual ceremony in May 2008.

The vessel was completed on October 28, 2009, by STX Europe (Finland) - a division of the South Korean multinational STX (shipbuilding corporation). At its arrival in the USA, right before it docked at homeport Port Everglades (Fort Lauderdale) , the vessel had to pass under the Danish bridge Great Belt Fixed Link. This was challenging as the bridge is 65 m (213 ft) higher than sea level while ship's highest point is normally 72 m (236 ft) above sea level. But it made it - due to its telescoping funnels, with only 0,6 m 2 ft) to spare when passing under the bridge!

The cruise liner has an impressive number of 7 godmothers. Each of the "good ladies" symbolized one of the ship's 7 different neighbourhoods. The naming ceremony took place at Port Everglade, on December 5, 2009.

On November 4, 2016, world's 3 largest cruise ships - Harmony, Allure and Oasis - convened off Florida's coast. The unique event was live streamed officially by RCI, starting at approx 5 pm EST. The meeting at open sea coincided with the Harmony's arrival at Port Everglades (her US homeport), finishing a 13-night Transatlantic repositioning cruise from Barcelona to Florida (Oct 23 - Nov 5). The following aerial photo shows an Oasis-class vessel (as looked from above).

Things To Do

Subscriber only, travel | royal caribbean expands haiti trip suspension — and adds new replacement stops.

A Royal Caribbean ship anchors off the cruise line's private day resort of Labadee, Haiti, in this file photo. The company just announced a further suspension of stops to Haiti amid further gang violence in Port-au-Prince. (Daniel Morel/AP)

As gang violence continues in Haiti, Royal Caribbean has extended the suspension of its port calls to a private day resort it operates in the island nation’s northern tip.

Fourteen sailings that were scheduled to stop at Labadee will be rerouted through the end of April, the cruise line said Monday.

“The safety and security of our guests, crew, and communities we visit are our top priority,” Royal Caribbean said in a prepared statement. “Our Global Security and Intel Team is closely monitoring the evolving situation in Haiti, and in an abundance of caution, we are temporarily making adjustments to sailings visiting Labadee. We will continue to monitor and reassess calls as needed, and will communicate updates with guests directly.”

International news reports state that violence and killings continue in and around the nation’s capital, Port-au-Prince. Flights into and out of the city’s airport remain suspended, and gangs have overrun the nation’s main port, hindering entry of food and medicine.

Royal Caribbean has been leasing the 260-acre Labadee attraction, built on a peninsula accessible only to the cruise line’s guests and employees, since the 1980s. It is located 130 miles north of Port-au-Prince and has remained unscathed during other periods of unrest.

The suspension will affect itineraries of three ships: Oasis of the Seas and Independence of the Seas, traveling from Port Miami, and Symphony of the Seas, leaving from Port Everglades.

Alternative destinations that were not announced during the first week of reroutings in mid-March include George Town, Grand Cayman; Bimini, Bahamas; and Philipsburg, St. Maarten.

Labadee stops on some sailings will be replaced by an extra day at sea or a stop at one of Royal Caribbean’s other private resorts, Perfect Day at CocoCay.

Here are the affected sailing dates and alternative port calls:

Symphony of the Seas:

March 23 sailing — Replaced with Falmouth, Jamaica, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

March 31 sailing — Replaced with Perfect Day at CocoCay on Day 2 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Scheduled stop at Falmouth, Jamaica, will now be from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

April 6 and April 20 sailings — Replaced with Falmouth, Jamaica, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

April 14 sailing — Replaced with Perfect Day at CocoCay on Day 5, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Stop in Falmouth, Jamaica is now on Day 3.

April 28 sailing — Replaced with a day at sea. Stop in Falmouth, Jamaica will now be from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Independence of the Seas:

April 4 and April 18 sailings — Replaced with stop at Grand Turk, Turks & Caicos, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

April 8 sailing — Replaced with George Town, Grand Cayman, from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. New call time for stop in Nassau, Bahamas, is 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

April 22 sailing — Replaced with Bimini, Bahamas, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Nassau, Bahamas is now on Day 4 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Perfect Day at CocoCay has been added to the itinerary on Day 5, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Celebrity Cruises has announced that its 2025-2026 cruise season will include more short voyages in the Caribbean. This will be perfect for travelers who are looking for short midweek and weekend getaways.

These short sailings will take place aboard Celebrity Reflection and Summit. They’ll include calls to Bimini, Nassau, and Perfect Day at CocoCay in the Bahamas. They’ll also include stops at Key West and Cozumel. For the first time this summer, the line is offering three and four-night Caribbean cruises. The addition of these short 2025 and 2026 sailings builds on that offering.

Celebrity Reflection will offer three and four-night voyages year-round from Port Everglades in Fort Lauderdale. There will be over 100 sailings to choose from. The ship will continue to call on Perfect Day at CocoCay, which is Royal Caribbean Group’s private Bahamian island.

Also sailing from Port Everglades, Celebrity Summit will offer four and five-night sailings that visit Key West and Cozumel.

“More than ever before, our guests are seeking opportunities to escape the everyday to bond with friends and family,” said Laura Hodges Bethge, President of Celebrity Cruises. “We love that we can offer vacation options designed to provide guests an elevated experience that’s close to home while still exceeding their expectations of what a vacation can be.”

Also on offer during the 2025-2026 Caribbean season will be longer immersive voyages, including seven to 10-night sailings aboard one of Celebrity’s newest ships, Celebrity Beyond.

The top 10 biggest cruise ships in the world

M odern cruise ships continue to grow in size, with the biggest cruise ship, the Icon of the Seas , launching at the start of this year, and her sister ship the Star of the Seas expected to surpass her in size.

Both of these ships are operated by Royal Caribbean International, which operates five of the ten largest cruise ships in the world. Carnival Corporation, arguably the biggest cruise company in the world, features three times on the list through its subsidiaries P&O Cruises and Costa Cruises.

All of the heaviest cruise ships in the world were built within the last 20 years, although the majority – six of the ten – were built within the last five years.

So, here are the top ten biggest cruise ships in the world, by gross tonnage.

10. P&O Cruises MS Arvia : 185,581 gross tonnes

The MS Arvia is P&O Cruises’ fourth ship to be built by German shipyard Meyer Werft. Weighing in at 185,581 gross tonnes, the 345m (1,130-foot) Arvia is slightly larger than her sister ship, the MS Iona . The 20-deck ship is the largest ship commissioned for the British cruise market and has a maximum passenger capacity of 6,264 passengers, with 1,800 crew onboard.

The ship is the second liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered Excellence-class vessel for P&O, following the Iona . Arvia is powered by a 61,760kW LNG drive system, with a propulsion power of 37 megawatts. The LNG-powered propulsion system allows the vessel to sail at a maximum speed of 21.5 knots.

After being floated out in August 2022, the Arvia mainly operates itineraries around the Caribbean or the Mediterranean.

9. Costa Cruises – Costa Smeralda : 185,010 gross tonnes

The Costa Smeralda is the first LNG-powered vessel in the Costa Cruises fleet. With a gross tonnage of 185,010gt, the 20-deck Excellence-class ship measures 337m (1,106 feet) in length. The second LNG-powered cruise ship to enter operation in the world, she has a maximum capacity of 6,554 passengers with 1,646 crew and a service speed of 21.5 knots.

Construction of the Costa Smeralda began at the Meyer shipyard in Turku, Finland, in September 2017. Meyer Turku collaborated with the Meyer Werft Papenburg shipyard to develop and integrate the LNG propulsion plant for the ship. She is fitted with four 16-cylinder, Caterpillar MaK 16VM46DF engines, with 15.4 megawatts (20,710 horsepower) output per engine, resulting in a maximum power of  37 megawatts (50,000 horsepower).

The ship, which was named after the Emerald Coast of Sardinia, entered service in December 2019 , departing Savona on its maiden voyage in the Mediterranean, where it has sailed since.

8. Costa Cruises – Costa Toscana : 186,364 gross tonnes

The Costa Toscana is the sister ship of the Costa Smeralda and is also powered by LNG . measuring 337m (1,106 feet) long and weighing in at 186,364 gross tonnes, the Toscana has a maximum capacity of 6,338 passengers and 1,678 staff across her 20 decks.

Like her sister ship, the Toscana was also built at the Meyer shipyard in Finland, with construction completed in 2021. She is also powered by four MaK-Caterpillar engines, with a total power of 57.2 megawatts (76,706 horsepower), and two ABB Azipod motors , resulting in a service speed of 17 knots.

Named in homage to the Tuscany region of Italy, Costa Toscana mainly sails around the Mediterranean Sea but Costa Cruises has also used the ship to sail itineraries further afield, such as around Brazil and the UAE.

7. MSC Cruises – MSC World Europa : 215,863 gross tonnes

The only entry in the top ten from MSC Cruises, MSC World Europa measures 333m (1,094 feet) in length. With 215,863 gross tonnage, she can house more people than any other ship in the MSC fleet: up to 6,762 passengers across 2,633 cabins spread over 22 decks, in addition to 2,138 crew.

Built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire, France, the World Europa ’s LNG-power propulsion system was subcontracted to Finland-based Wärtsilä. Five LNG-powered, 14-cylinder Wartsila 46DF dual-fuel engines power the vessel, with a propulsion power of 44 megawatts ( 59,005 horsepower). She also features nitrogen oxide reduction (NOR) units, two Wartsila LNGPac fuel storage and supply systems, seven thrusters, and two fixed-pitch propellers.

The MSC World Europa was floated out at the end of 2021 and was initially used as an accommodation vessel for fans attending the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with the ship berthed at Doha Port in Qatar during the tournament. Following the competition, the ship subsequently travelled several routes around the UAE, before sailing to the Mediterranean, where it has sailed itineraries since.

6. Royal Caribbean International – Allure of the Seas : 225,282 gross tonnes

The first of many entries on this list operated by Royal Caribbean, Allure of the Seas weighs in at 225,282 gross tonnes. Measuring 362m (1,187 feet), she is only 50mm (2 inches) longer than her sister ship the Oasis of the Seas . The Allure has a maximum capacity of 6,780 passengers and 2,200 crew across 18 decks.

Built at the Turku Shipyard in Finland, the Allure took two years to build , floating out in 2010. She features six Wärtsilä 46 diesel engines with a total power output of 97 megawatts (130,053 horsepower). It is propelled by three electric Azipod azimuth thrusters. The ship can travel at a cruising speed of 22 knots.

With a homeport of Galveston, Texas in the US, the Allure mainly serves itineraries around the Bahamas but she is scheduled to sail routes around the Mediterranean in 2025.

5. Royal Caribbean International – Oasis of the Seas : 226,838 gross tonnes

The oldest ship on this list, the Oasis of the Seas has been in service for over a decade. She was the biggest cruise ship at the time when floated out in 2009, with a gross tonnage of 226,838gt and a length of 360m (1,181 feet). The Oasis has a maximum capacity of 6,699 passengers and 2,181 staff across 18 decks.

The Oasis took two years to build at the Meyer shipyard in Turku, Finland, with the keel laid on 12 November 2007 and the ship arriving at her homeport of Port Everglades in Florida, US, on 13 November 2009.

The Oasis is powered by eight Wärtsilä V12 diesel engines, which generate 5.6 megawatts (7,500 horsepower) each, alongside four bow thrusters. The main propulsion system consists of three 20-megawatt (26,820 horsepower) electric Azipod motors, resulting in a combined propulsion power of 82 megawatts (109,964 horsepower) and a standard cruising speed of 23 knots.

The Oasis mainly operates routes around the Caribbean, but occasionally repositions to offer itineraries in the Mediterranean.

4. Royal Caribbean International – Harmony of the Seas : 226,963 gross tonnes

The third Oasis-class ship built by Royal Caribbean, Harmony of the Seas weighed in bigger than her existing sister ships at launch in 2016, with 226,963 gross tonnage, but she has since been surpassed by newer vessels. With a total length of 362m (1,188 feet), Harmony has a maximum capacity of 6,780 passengers and 2,300 staff across 18 decks.

Royal Caribbean placed an order with STX France for the construction of Harmony of the Seas in December 2012. The first steel for the ship was cut at STX France’s Saint-Nazaire shipyard in September 2013, while the keel-laying ceremony was held in May 2014.

The Harmony is powered by three 18.9-megawatt Wärtsilä 16V46 16-cylinder main generator diesel engines and three Wärtsilä 12V46 12-cylinder engines producing 13.9 megawatts each. The propulsion power is provided by three electric Azipod azimuth thrusters and manoeuvring is assisted by four 5.5-megawatt Wärtsilä CT 3500 tunnel thrusters. The propulsion system results in 82 megawatts (109,964 horsepower) and enables the ship to sail at a standard speed of 23 knots.

Harmony of the Seas embarked on her inaugural seven-night Western Mediterranean cruise from Barcelona, Spain, in June 2016, and currently operates itineraries around the Western Caribbean from her homeport of Galveston, Texas in the US.

3. Royal Caribbean International – Symphony of the Seas : 228,081 gross tonnes

At launch in 2018, the Symphony of the Seas surpassed the Harmony as the biggest cruise ship, weighing in at 228,081 gross tonnes. Measuring 361m (1,185 feet), the Symphony has a maximum capacity of 6,680 passengers and 2,200 staff across 18 decks and was the testing ground for Royal Caribbean's new muster drill . With a total length of 361m (1,185 feet), She is roughly 30 metres (98 feet) longer than the largest military ships , the US Nimitz-class aircraft carriers and the USS Gerald R. Ford .

The keel-laying ceremony for the Symphony of the Seas was held in October 2015 at STX’s Saint-Nazaire shipyard in France, and the ship sailed out in June 2017. She is powered by six diesel sets, each composed of three Wärtsilä 16V46D engines and three Wärtsilä 12V46D engines, as well as three 20-megawatt electric Azipod main engines – resulting in 82 megawatts (109,964 horsepower) of propulsion power and a standard cruising speed of 22 knots.

The Symphony commenced her seven-day maiden voyage from Barcelona in April 2018, and since then has mainly operated itineraries around the Caribbean from her homeports of Miami, New York, and Fort Lauderdale.

2. Royal Caribbean International – Wonder of the Seas : 235,600 gross tonnes

Royal Caribbean's flagship, Wonder of the Seas is the fifth Oasis-class cruise ship built for the cruise company. Weighing in at 235,600 gross tonnes, the Wonder was the largest ship in the world when she was completed in January 2022. Measuring 362m (1,187 feet) in length, the 18-deck Wonder has a maximum capacity of 7,084 guests across its 2,867 staterooms, as well as housing 2,369 crew.

Built by Chantiers de l’Atlantique in Saint-Nazaire, Wonder is powered by two Wärtsilä 16V46D engines and four Wärtsilä 12V46D engines; and uses three 20-megawatt electric Azipod engines for propulsion, combining for a propulsion power of 82 megawatts (109,964 horsepower and a standard cruising speed of 22 knots.

The Wonder sailed her maiden voyage in March 2022 from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and has since served itineraries around the Caribbean from her homeports of Miami and Cape Canaveral.

1. Royal Caribbean International – Icon of the Seas : 248,663 gross tonnes

Weighing 248,663 gross tonnes and measuring 365 metres (1,1967 feet), the Icon of the Seas is the largest cruise ship in the world. Christened on 23 January 2024, the Icon has a maximum capacity of 7,600 passengers and 2,350 crew across 20 decks. She is the lead ship of the new Icon-class, with a sister ship the Star of the Seas due to be delivered in 2025 and another ship planned for delivery in 2026.

Built by Meyer Turku in Finland, the Icon is the first ship in the Royal Caribbean fleet that can be powered by LNG. It uses three Wärtsilä 14V46DF and three Wärtsilä 12V46DF for its main generator engines, which provide 67.5 megawatts of energy to run the ship. She is propelled by three 20-megawatt Azipod thrusters as well as five 4.8-megawatt Wärtsilä WTT-45 CP bow thrusters, with a cruising speed of 22 knots.

After sailing her maiden voyage on 27 January 2024, the Icon now sails year-round itineraries of seven-night trips around the Eastern and Western Caribbean from her homeport of Miami, Florida.
