You could spend decades—as I have—exploring Colorado’s stunning scenery and top attractions and still have more to see and do. No single trip can cover everything that makes the state a traveler’s dream destination. AFAR’s roundup of things to see and do in Colorado offered 16 tips to get you started, including driving the peak-to-peak scenic byway, visiting Denver Art Museum, and soaking in Iron Mountain Hot Springs. However, if you want to hit the highlights, here are your main targets, divided up by season.

The best places to visit in Colorado in fall

Colorado is spectacular year-round, but autumn’s colors and temperatures make it a particularly magical time to visit.

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve

Visiting the dunes typically means overnighting at the park’s campground , because few accommodations exist near this remote spot some 230 miles south of Denver. But campers are rewarded with dusk and dawn’s light shows on the sand dunes, which ripple beneath the sawtooth Sangre de Cristo mountains. Summers are scorching, but in fall, sand surfaces remain comfortable all day. Scramble across the dunes, or rent a sandboard to surf the slopes like waves.

Dunton Hot Springs

Dunton is the quintessential Colorado getaway for those who can afford it ($1,400 per night is typical). Guests cozy into hand-built log cabins that combine historic patina with western art and worldly comforts like sustainably made beds and linens. Rates include food and drink that make every meal feel special—think roasted pork with charred leek grits followed by poached rhubarb panna cotta—but the steaming springs are this getaway’s raison d’être. Views from the rustic yet luxe bathhouse showcase aspen groves that turn amber in autumn, and one guest cabin (Well House) includes its own spring-fed soaking tub.

Rocky Mountain National Park

Most of this park’s 4.3 million annual visitors flock here in summer, so I go in September for fewer traffic backups on Trail Ridge Road (a must-do drive traversing treeless alpine tundra). Fall is also mating season for the park’s elk herd, and the possibility of hearing bulls’ distinctive bugles adds extra magic to any hike. I always glimpse elk along the Moraine Park Loop, a 5.5-mile circuit that can be shortened to preference.

Best places to visit in Colorado in winter

Snow envelopes much of the state in the winter months, turning urban areas into winter wonderlands and promising world-class outdoor activities.

Meow Wolf Convergence Station

In fall 2023, Denver’s fun house of immersive art installations launched Sips (With a Z), a cocktail bar and lounge dedicated to providing “a sanctuary of chill amidst the hubbub of quantum travel.” Mirrored walls reflect a mashup of classical sculpture and graffiti art, and vintage furniture provides myriad perches for pondering the installation’s experiential art. The bar is only open to Meow Wolf Denver visitors and event guests. While the previous art triggered sight, sound, and touch, the new lounge also titillates our sense of taste.

Downhill skiing in Telluride, Colorado

Telluride, Colorado, is all about the skiing. And the views. And the restaurants...

Sure, it’s far from major cities, but I wager that the only winter enclaves with mountain vistas that rival Telluride’s are in the Alps. These jagged southwest Colorado slopes offer scenery so jawdropping, I always feel dazzled, regardless of the snow conditions. And several mountaintop eateries showcase the splendor. Perched at 11,966 feet, Alpino Vino ranks as the highest restaurant in North America and serves Italian food and wine specialties within a cozy stone and log cabin. More tableside panoramas (and an award-winning wine list) await at Allred’s at 10,551 feet.

Live music in Silverthorne, Colorado

Bluebird Market hosts live music and offers a wide range of foodie delights including empanadas, crepes, and burgers.

Silverthorne

Once little more than a refueling stop for motorists traveling Interstate 70, Exit 205 is now an appealing home base for three nearby Colorado ski resorts (Arapahoe Basin, Keystone, and Breckenridge) and a destination in its own right. Stay at Hotel Indigo , the chain’s first mountain property housing an upscale tequila bar and indoor swimming pool. Go snowshoeing or Nordic skiing at Raven Golf Club (free to the public; rent gear at Gore Range Sports) and enjoy après at the Bluebird Market food hall , where weekends find live bands entertaining drinkers at the central bar.

Best places to visit in Colorado in spring

Visitor numbers drop during the spring, but Colorado still puts on a show as flowers bloom and the arts scene wows guests.

Casa Bonita

Coloradoans Trey Parker and Matt Stone (creators of the South Park animated TV series) spent $40 million to renovate this Denver icon of Mexican food and carnivalesque stunts. Summer 2023 kicked off its much-anticipated reopening. Diners (up to 2,100 of them, at capacity) still line up with trays for meals, now designed by James Beard–nominated chef Dana Rodriguez. Cliff diving continues in the waterfall-fed pool, and the multi-level dining room delivers more spectacle than ambiance.

Crowds taper but deals abound during this destination’s shoulder season. April and May are when Aspen’s celebrated restaurants often offer discounted menus and drink specials, and at these elevations (the Snowmass base village sits at 8,104 feet), snow blankets the slopes well beyond the resorts’ mid-April closing date, making for prime ski conditions—and rowdy parties. At Cloud Nine Alpine Bistro , the springtime ritual includes uncorking staggering quantities of champagne on the summit-ringed outdoor deck.

Shopping in Fruita, Colorado

Fruita offers a laid-back, walkable base for exploring the great outdoors.

Idyllic weather and blooming cactus make spring my favorite time to visit Colorado’s canyon country, and Fruita is the best home base. From here, it’s a 15-minute drive to the sculpted red rock sandstone spires of Colorado National Monument and 5 minutes to world-famous mountain bike trails. Fruita’s walkable downtown includes the Hot Tomato , delivering Jersey-style pizza that’s good as gospel. Live music often enlivens the pedestrian block, and for sips, there are wineries in Palisade, 30 minutes east.

Best places to visit in Colorado in summer

Colorado’s hiking and biking trails come into their own during the warmer months while road-tripping offers an easy way to see much of the state—in an EV on many of the scenic byways .

Crested Butte

After 25 years in Colorado, I still gape at the beauty of Crested Butte , because in a state that’s chockablock with pretty views, this town tops the list. Sheer peaks rise up beside the streets’ grid, where colorful, mining-era Victorians line the sidewalks. No highway noise ruins the mountains’ quiet, and only merry sounds emerge from main street bars and eateries. The surrounding trails wind through aspen groves and meadows that are deservedly famous for July’s display of wildflowers.

WHRRZ Pool v1.jpg

The 180-room Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch offers a host of guest activities including skiing, golf, fly fishing, whitewater rafting, and mountain biking.

Bachelor Gulch

Come summer, the Bachelor Gulch base area of Beaver Creek ski resort becomes the scene of a daily lawn and pool party that encapsulates what’s splendid about Colorado. Views include aspen-covered mountainsides, and adventures on foot or bike follow trails leading into wildflower meadows. Play a round of cornhole on the lawn, then relocate to Wyld ’s patio for plates showcasing Colorado-grown produce. Stay at the Ritz-Carlton, Bachelor Gulch (renovated in 2022) to cool off in its outdoor pool and sip rosé from the surrounding loungers.

Fort Collins

Visit during Colorado State’s summer break, and you won’t have to elbow your way into this city’s esteemed breweries. (Crooked Stave makes some of my favorite sours.) Nationally known New Belgium Brewing organizes the annual Tour de Fat each August, when a parade of 20,000 wildly costumed cyclists pedal the streets. I make the 100-year-old Armstrong Hotel my downtown home base and stroll from its classy-hip rooms to such downtown shops as Scrumpy’s Hard Cider Bar, which pours drink made from local homeowners’ apple trees.

Places to Visit in Colorado

So, where are the best places to visit in Colorado? Sure, visit famous destinations like Rocky Mountain National Park, but this guide includes a mix of the popular and lesser-known. We’ll introduce you to the top 29 places to visit in Colorado – let’s dive straight in.

Best Cities to Visit in Colorado

Colorado has some fantastic cities. If you want a taste of culture and inner-city action, this section will provide you with many choices. Colorado has a city for you, whether you want a historic downtown or a stunning backdrop of mountain peaks.

Most of the places on our list are cities, but there is a charming town or two that we’ve snuck in. Keep an eye out for them; they were just too beautiful to not include.

1. Colorado Springs

Colorado Springs is easily one of the most popular places to visit in Colorado. The city lies between Rocky Mountain National Park and Pike National Park, and it is full of exciting things to do and see. I spent a summer there training at the Broadmoor World Arena. What a summer that was to remember. I have loved visiting Colorado ever since.

You’ll find attractions like the Fine Arts Center and Penrose Heritage Museum in the city center. On the outskirts of Colorado Springs is the Ghost Town Museum which is a modeled old mining town, and tourist attraction. While just outside the city, there are plenty of outdoor and cultural attractions.

When visiting Colorado Springs, don’t miss out on the Garden of the Gods. This 1,300-acre sandstone reserve is home to endless miles of trails and rock formations. Located just six miles outside the city center, it is an entry-level way to experience the great outdoors without visiting a national park. This tour takes you in an open air jeep to the Garden of the Gods, Helen Hunt Falls, Cheyenne and more.

A hot air balloon ride at sunrise is a beautiful way to wake up to the Colorado landscape. See the sun rise over views of Pikes Peak, the Garden of the Gods, and other Colorado wonders.

Denver (aka Mile High City) is the most cultural and historical city to visit in Colorado. The city is the state capital and dates back to the Old West era, meaning there are plenty of historic buildings and stories to discover. Take a food tour to sample five tastings as you learn of Denver’s wild west history and pass many of its iconic sites like Coors Field, Dairy Block, McGregor Square and more.

If you want a traditional city break, Denver is a great choice. Downtown Denver is full of city-style entertainment, including the Denver Art Museum, the Museum of Contemporary Art, and Coors Field – the home ground of the Colorado Rockies baseball team. As tempting as it is, spread your wings further than Downtown Denver. Further south, you’ll find attractions like Stranahan’s Whiskey Distillery, which makes a great afternoon activity.

Grand Junction is primarily known for one thing – wine. The city sits in Western Colorado, right next to the Utah border. It is surrounded by vast, dry green space, utilized mostly for wine production.

Wine tasting is a must when visiting the city. There are around 20 local wineries specializing in different grape varieties, perfect for a boozy weekend with friends or family. However, the city is not just a place to drink. Museum of the West, Eureka! McConnell Science Museum and Western Colorado Botanical Gardens are all brilliant attractions. The city is a short drive away from a pumpkin patch and corn maze, so keep it in mind as a Halloween destination.

Grand Junction is an excellent base in Western Colorado and ideal if you want a small, regional city experience. The best way to visit Colorado is on a road trip. Check RentalCars.com for price comparisons.

Durango is a culture-packed city on the Colorado/New Mexico border. It is a fascinating place to visit in Colorado, thanks to its nature preserves, and ancient history. Its location on the Southern Colorado border makes it a perfect stopover on an interstate road trip. Plus, you’ll be within driving distance of San Juan Forest and multiple national parks.

You can easily use the city as a base to explore Mesa Verde National Park, which is home to over 2,500 archeological sites. You can book tours that include transfers from the city center or rent a car and explore independently. The park is only a forty-minute drive from the city center, so it is a straightforward journey.

Durango’s history of production and industrial activity also means lots of fun and educational tourist activities. Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad is a beautifully restored steam train that visitors can take a scenic ride on through the surrounding countryside. The Powerhouse Science Center is also a fun but educational attraction in Durango.

5. Estes Park

Remember us mentioning that we’ve included a town in our list of best cities? Well, Estes Park is the town that made us bend the rules.

Estes Park is the most romantic of our places to visit in Colorado. The town is surrounded by mountain peaks and almost enveloped by Rocky Mountain National Park . It has hiking and biking trails heading in all directions – perfect for those who want to immerse themselves in Colorado’s nature.

As a base to explore the Rocky Mountains as well, the town rivals even Denver and Boulder. It is just an 8-minute drive from the town center to the national park.

The town has lots to do, including a number of photogenic ruins, an aerial tramway, and a scenic drive called the Peak to Peak Byway. You could very easily spend three or more days in Estes Park, which is impressive for a town of its size.

6. Steamboat Springs

Do you love winter sports? If so, Steamboat Springs is one of the best places to visit in Colorado. Steamboat Springs is also highly accessible, and the city has its own airport, meaning no long transfers or stressful car rentals.

The city sits in Northern Colorado, in Yampa Valley. It is famous for cross-country skiing and is home to Howelsen Hill Ski Area and (if you want to splash out) Steamboat Ski Resort. The city has incredible snow quality in the winter , and visitors rush to try out the slopes.

Another draw of the city is its hot springs. Strawberry Park Hot Springs and Old Town Hot Springs are perfect for bathing – come summer or winter. When you aren’t zipping down ski slopes, you can relax and soothe those worn-out muscles.

Old Town Hot Springs has slides and artificially treated pools for a more enjoyable experience. While Strawberry Park has mineral pools in a natural setting surrounded by pine trees and beautiful scenery.

7. Pagosa Springs

Pagosa Springs is another town that has wriggled its way onto our list. Located in Southern Colorado, Pagosa Springs is also a fantastic destination if you want to visit hot springs in Colorado. You can visit an upscale spa or the public springs named Nathan’s Hippy Dip Hot Springs. The public springs are entirely free – perfect for those on a budget or wanting a less commercialized experience.

Pagosa Springs is also surrounded by the San Juan Mountains, and you can see the mountain peaks on the horizon. It is an excellent base for exploring the San Juan Mountains, and if you rent a car, it is easy to drive to the mountains on a day trip.

Pagosa Springs is a great place to visit in Colorado if you want an off-the-beaten-track experience. The town has all the facilities for a comfortable stay but all the charm of a quiet atmosphere.

8. Crested Butte

Crested Butte is an exciting yet peaceful destination in Colorado. Like Estes Park, Crested Butte comes into its own every winter. The town comes alive with skiers and busy slopes, and even Nordic ski routes dotted around the town itself. Jot it down as a top contender for a winter adventure in Colorado.

Throughout the rest of the year, the popular skiing areas become popular for mountain biking instead. Similarly, the snow melting welcomes hikers looking to explore the mountains and alpine-like meadows. There are also scenic drives like the Historic Byway, which passes areas of natural beauty like Kebler Pass, which is not accessible to most vehicles after a snowfall. You can even visit Gunnison National Forest, a stunning area of nearly 1.7 million acres of protected flora and fauna.

Crested Butte is a place to visit for a quiet atmosphere, surrounded by nature. And in winter, it is the perfect destination for snow sports.

Aspen is famous for many reasons. The city is home to film festivals, winter sports, and more hiking and biking trails than you’ve had hot dinners. Aspen also attracts an elite crowd. It is Aspen that you’ll see celebrities posting videos and holiday pictures on Instagram. If you want to join the crowds, Aspen is a cool, trendy place to be.

Aspen is a charming mountain town mostly made up of a very successful ski resort. It has a resort town feel, and in winter, Aspen is overrun with skiers wearing all the latest gear. While much busier than Crested Butte or Estes Park, Aspen has an addictive buzz. If you want a party atmosphere and excellent hospitality, look no further.

The most famous spot in Pike National Forest though is Pikes Peak. Pikes Peak is the highest summit in the southern Front Range. Pikes Peak Cog Railway is one of the highest in the world and takes visitors all the way to the summit up a steep track.

There are plenty of mountain biking trails to explore in the Pike National Forest. However, we primarily recommend the spot for those who want to enjoy hiking trails and climbing challenging peaks.

Curecanti National Park is small but fun. It is ideal for a day trip, and you can always stop for lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants. Its facilities and activities make it one of the most fun places to visit in Colorado.

We are nearly at the end of this guide to the best places to visit in Colorado. However, there are a few extra unique places to visit in Colorado that we just couldn’t leave out.

These places don’t fit into our previous categories but definitely warrant a place on your Colorado itinerary. Can we tempt you with bathing in hot springs? A magnificent lake? Let’s see.

24. Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park

Glenwood Caverns is the best. How many amusement parks do you know that are sat on top of a mountain? In the US, Glenwood Caverns is the only mountaintop amusement park – so visiting is definitely worth bragging rights.

The park itself has a fun range of rides. The classic gondola ride is a great way to appreciate your mountain-top locale, while the guided cave tour is a unique addition to a day out. Of course, you will find more traditional thrill-seeking rides, including a Giant Canyon Swing and plenty of rollercoasters.

Glenwood Caverns is fantastic for families or those wanting to let their hair down for a day. Glenwood Springs is a good town for your itinerary, even without visiting the amusement park. You’ll find public hot springs, the Frontier Historical Museum, and plenty of relaxing spots along the river.

25. Royal Gorge Bridge & Park

When you’ve visited an amusement park on top of a mountain, what next? An amusement park on top of a canyon seems a good start.

The 360-acre amusement park sat atop a canyon with one of the highest suspension bridges in the world, joining the two canyon banks. The park was built in 1929 yet remains one of the most popular places to visit in Colorado almost a hundred years later. It is approximately an hour’s drive from Colorado Springs and is very quickly visited on a day trip.

You can really let loose at Royal Gorge Bridge & Park. You can be zipping down a zipline with canyon views or brave the sky coaster, which straps you in to hurtle up to 50 miles per hour head first. Even walking the bridge is an activity, and you should bring a camera to snap some fantastic photographs.

26. Manitou Springs

Manitou Springs is a resort city on the outskirts of Colorado Springs. Manitou Springs is the best if you are looking for a place that merges culture, history, nature, and a healing experience.

The town has eight mineral springs that were once believed by Native Americans to hold healing properties. Today visitors can sample each spring from different water fountains spaced along streets in the city center. Each spring has a distinctly different taste, and the experience is like wine tasting – just more beneficial for your health.

You can enjoy the Zipline Center in Manitou Springs when you aren’t tasting the spring water. Be brave and tackle the incline. Who knows, maybe the healing water will give you a competitive edge. You can also book a cave tour at the Cave of the Winds Mountain Park or head to the Garden of the Gods.

27. Mount Evans Scenic Byway

Fancy a scenic drive? There is no better feeling than road-tripping through a new place with good music, snacks, and company. And, if you don’t have time for a multi-day road trip, driving Mount Evans Scenic Byway is a fantastic alternative.

The route starts from Echo Lake Park (although you can begin at Idaho Springs if you wish). It takes roughly 1.5 hours to drive the entire route there and back, but you should allow half a day at least for stopping time.

You’ll pass lots of stunning scenery. We recommend getting out to walk around and admire Summit Lake Park, Meyer-Womble Observatory, and Mount Evan’s trig point. Be prepared to see lots of very fluffy white mountain goats as well, which is always entertaining for animal lovers. This route is easily one of the best places in Colorado for a fun, scenic drive.

28. Hanging Lake

When we say beautiful, triple whatever level of beauty you have in your mind. Hanging Lake is a gorgeous place to visit and is perfect for nature lovers or those chasing that elusive Instagram shot.

Hanging Lake’s water is so clear that you can see everything, right down to the bottom of the lake. Many tree trunks have fallen to the bottom of the lake, and the water clarity creates a unique, pretty effect, with the trunks seeming closer to the surface. You’ll also spot lots of marine life, including huge fish and eels.

Sadly, swimming is forbidden. The lake’s ecosystem is extremely fragile, and conservationists don’t want the lake to be disrupted and impacted negatively by tourism. Fortunately, though, Hanging Lake looks just as beautiful from its shores.

It is easiest to visit Hanging Lake from Glenwood Springs, Aspen, or Grand Junction, so consider combining a hike to the lake with one of these places.

29. Vail Colorado

If you want to use Colorado Springs as a base, we recommend adding on a trip to the nearby mountain village of Vail. Combining Colorado Springs with one of its nearest mountain towns is an excellent way to balance your trip. Vail’s most popular attractions are Betty Ford Alpine Gardens and its skiing opportunities, with Vail Ski Resort to keep you entertained. Read more: 21 Best Winter Vacations in the US

To Conclude

We’ll finish by reiterating our opening point; there are so many beautiful places to visit in Colorado. You can take things slow or go full throttle on exciting outdoor activities – Colorado caters to a mixed crowd.

Go hiking up Pikes Peak or through the Rocky Mountains. Go cross-country skiing at a major resort like Breckenridge Ski Resort or Vail Ski Resort. Or, sit back and enjoy the sun while bathing in Glenwood Springs. Whatever pace you want your holiday to be, there is a place to match it in Colorado.

Garden of the Gods Garden of the Gods free

U.S. News Insider Tip: Since the park is free to enter, consider exploring Garden of the Gods multiple times during your stay to see the rock formations at different times of day. The light just after sunrise and before sunset makes them especially striking and photogenic. – Kara Williams

It's easy to see how this natural landmark earned such an ethereal title: These magnificent red rock formations look as though deities could've carved them. However, the sandstone pillars are, in fact, the work of geological activity and erosion over millennia. You can learn about the garden's formations at the Visitor and Nature Center, which houses numerous informative displays and hosts daily presentations. You are welcome to explore the park on your own time (either on foot or by bike) or take a guided nature walk from the visitor center for a fee. The park partners with Adventures Out West to provide Jeep, trolley and Segway tours; it works with Amp'd Adventures for guided electric bike tours. (Note: Tour prices vary by vehicle and tour length.) Or, if you're looking for a more authentic Wild West experience, you can reserve your spot on a guided horseback tour offered by Academy Riding Stables .

Pikes Peak Pikes Peak

U.S. News Insider Tip: Don't miss the high-altitude, secret recipe doughnuts at the Pikes Peak Summit Visitor Center. An automated machine churns out thousands of the sweet treats daily. – Kara Williams

Rising more than 14,000 feet, Pikes Peak – aka "America's Mountain" – is among Colorado's most popular tourist attractions, namely for its awe-inspiring summit views. The stunning peak has long been a sacred place for Native Americans, including the Nuche tribe, ancestors of today's Ute tribe. The imposing mountain beckoned 19th-century, fortune-seeking pioneers, inspiring the Gold Rush cry, "Pikes Peak or Bust!" Later, the majestic vistas atop this pink granite peak led Katharine Lee Bates to pen the words to the song "America the Beautiful."

Royal Gorge Royal Gorge

Colorado Springs has plenty of nearby outdoor attractions like Pikes Peak and Garden of the Gods , but if you're looking for something further afield, you can't go wrong with Royal Gorge. Sitting 50 miles southwest of Colorado Springs, Royal Gorge is 10 miles long and 1,200 feet deep, carved into the landscape by the Arkansas River.

Royal Gorge Bridge and Park hosts numerous activities for viewing the impressive natural landmark. The famous pedestrian-only suspension bridge spans across Royal Gorge, sitting more than 900 feet above the Arkansas River. You can take in more views from the Aerial Gondola or Cloudscraper Zip Line. Alternatively, you can get up close to Royal Gorge with a thrilling guided Via Ferrata excursion, where you'll climb steel rungs drilled into rock walls while harnessed and clipped into cables (inexperienced rock climbers are welcome). Families will find fun here, too, thanks to the on-site playground.

U.S. News Insider Tip: On-street metered parking spots and paid lots in Manitou Springs can fill up quickly, especially on weekends from late April through September. Consider parking outside of town at the Fields Lot and taking the free shuttle into town. – Kara Williams

Let's get one thing straight: Manitou Springs is not a part of Colorado Springs, and residents here won't hesitate to remind you of that. Unlike its much larger neighbor, this small town in the Rocky Mountain foothills (about 6 miles northwest of central Colorado Springs) has rejected urbanization. Instead, Manitou Springs – now a National Historic District – remains a charming hippie-era haven filled with art galleries, funky boutiques and outdoor cafes. In fact, Manitou Springs' Briarhurst Manor Estate makes our list of the Best Restaurants in Colorado Springs .

Mueller State Park Mueller State Park

When you don't feel like driving 140 miles to Rocky Mountain National Park , Mueller State Park offers a convenient alternative. Located about 30 miles west of Colorado Springs, its roughly 5,000 acres host jagged mountain peaks, verdant aspen forests and more than 50 miles of trails for hiking, biking, cross-country skiing and more. Hiking trails range from easy and flat to steep and advanced, so this an ideal outing for leisure walkers and adventure-seekers alike. Outdoor enthusiasts say the park is a wonderful place to spend time.

Along with your hiking shoes, make sure to bring your binoculars. This park is home to plenty of wildlife, including elk, eagles and bears. Note that leashed pets are welcome in the park's campgrounds, picnic areas and paved roads, but they are not permitted on hiking trails so as not to bother the forest animals.

United States Air Force Academy United States Air Force Academy free

With a sprawling campus set against the Rampart Range north of Colorado Springs, the U.S. Air Force Academy is a functioning educational institution for future members of the military. Parts of the campus are open to the public and well worth a visit. The visitor center, a 31,600-square-foot facility, is a key stop for all guests. Walk through the informative exhibit about cadet life, which includes a life-size reproduction of a cadet dorm room (student dorms are not open to the public). Also learn about the different types of cadet uniforms and squadron patches; watch a 21-minute film about the Academy; and see a model of the stunning Cadet Chapel. Alas, the real chapel – with its imposing spires and beautiful stained glass – is undergoing a massive renovation and is hidden from view by a giant white box. It's scheduled to reopen to visitors in 2027.

The Planetarium is open to the public Fridays through Mondays and offers free shows; see the schedule here . Arnold Hall, the cadet social center, is also open to visitors; this is the place to go if you need a bite to eat. Travelers suggest picking up the map of key sites and walking trails at the visitor center before setting out on your own. However, some of the key overlooks are found prior to your arrival at the visitor center, so you may want to check out the online self-guided tour , too. The paved Chapel Trail – which is worth taking for views of the cadets' living quarters and classroom area – is short, but some past guests note that it can feel strenuous at the high altitude. You can also get to the overlook by driving to the parking area at the Planetarium.

North Cheyenne Cañon Park North Cheyenne Cañon Park free

North Cheyenne Cañon Park, located about 5 miles southwest of town, comprises more than 1,600 acres at the bottom of a 1,000-foot-deep canyon. The park's differing altitudes can support a vast array of wildlife, including deer, mountain lions and black bears. Miles of hiking trails run through the park.

Visitors suggest you first stop at the Starsmore Visitor and Nature Center, located at the park entrance. There you'll find displays devoted to the park's wildlife as well as information on the myriad trails for various ability levels. Another place to obtain information is the Helen Hunt Falls Visitor Center, which is located at the base of its namesake falls. Past visitors say they appreciated the lack of an admission fee for the park.

U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum

The U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Museum opened in 2020. The state-of-the-art, 60,000-square-foot facility houses 12 different galleries and dozens of interactive displays that detail Olympic and Paralympic history, showcase the athleticism required to be a world-stage competitor and tell inspiring athlete stories. The museum is especially inclusive: All guests begin their journey via elevator on the third floor then make their way to galleries via a spiral ramped pathway. Other accessibility services can be personalized for each exhibit, such as audio descriptions or closed captioning on videos. Sensory bags (which include noise canceling headphones and fidget toys) are available as well.

Museumgoers say the vast collection of Olympic artifacts and memorabilia is impressive. Others say the simulated exhibits – such as racing against track star Jesse Owens or riding a skeleton down an icy course – are especially fun. Some visitors lamented the lack of free parking; metered spots and a paid lot are available nearby.

Red Rock Canyon Open Space Red Rock Canyon Open Space free

Arizona and Utah aren't the only states that boast rust-colored rocks – Colorado has them, too. And you don't have to stray too far from Colorado Springs to get a good look at them from a hiking or biking trail. Sitting about 4 miles northwest of downtown Colorado Springs along Highway 24 (right before you reach  Manitou Springs ), Red Rock Canyon has contributed to the area's scenic landscape since 7000 B.C. In the 1800s, the desert landscape was used to refine the ore that came from the gold mines in nearby Cripple Creek. During the 20th century, Red Rock Canyon was owned by the Bock family, who had plans to transform the land into a vacation haven, complete with a resort hotel and a golf course. In 2003, the city of Colorado Springs purchased the land and used its striking red cliffs to punctuate miles of new hiking and biking trails.

Recent visitors praise Red Rock Canyon Open Space's stunning rock formations and appreciate that the trails are much less crowded than popular Garden of the Gods. Parkgoers also like scrambling on some of the rocks – though permits for technical rock climbing are required and park authorities note that climbing above 10 feet off the ground is illegal without a permit.

Old Colorado City Old Colorado City free

Sitting just west of the downtown area is Old Colorado City, the original capital of the Colorado Territory. Founded back in 1859, this area was once a hotbed of activity, overflowing with farmers, miners, ranchers and other settlers seeking a piece of their own Manifest Destiny. In 1917, Colorado City was annexed by a fast-growing new settlement: Colorado Springs. Although it is no longer its own town, the Old Colorado City Historic District maintains its 19th-century Wild West feel with a few modifications: the area's buildings now house locally owned art galleries, quaint shops and mom and pop restaurants.

Travelers who visit Old Colorado City frequently praise the district's laid-back charm and friendly business owners, but many say you don't need to spend much more than a few hours here. Recent visitors point out this tourist destination is a good place to shop for locally made art and souvenirs. Consider stopping here before or after a visit to Garden of the Gods or Red Rock Canyon as it's along the way.

The Broadmoor Seven Falls The Broadmoor Seven Falls

Despite its affiliation with The Broadmoor , Seven Falls is actually 3.5 miles north of the historic luxury hotel. The seven cascades, which collectively descend 180 feet, sit within a scenic 1,250-foot-wall box canyon. This Colorado Springs landmark has welcomed visitors since 1883, when it cost just 10 cents to enter the toll road to the falls.

On arrival at the park entrance, it's nearly a milelong walk to the base of the cascades; guests with mobility concerns can take an in-park tram (which has a $2 fee). Once you've finished snapping photos from the bottom, climb up the 224 steps alongside the rushing water for a bird's-eye view at the top of falls. From here, there's a network of hiking trails to explore. Be sure to wear sturdy shoes if this is your plan. Alternatively, you can walk up 185 steps or take an elevator to the Eagle's Nest platform. If you want to reach the top of the falls, the only way to do so is to take the stairs.

Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum free

After you've toured the historic streets of  Old Colorado City , consider making a stop at the Colorado Springs Pioneers Museum. Housed in what was once the early 20th-century El Paso County Courthouse, this museum is filled with old photographs and artifacts that recount the city's story. Visitors can trace Colorado Springs' evolution from a mining town to a popular tourist destination. The museum also has an exhibit called "Cultural Crossroads," that shares information about the Native Americans who made their home in the Pikes Peak region centuries ago. (Note: This exhibit is currently closed for a remodel.)

It may be small, but this attraction wins visitors (particularly history buffs) over with its informative displays. Recent visitors said you can spend a few hours here, as there is a lot to see and learn, while others say this is a good spot for families thanks to its kid-friendly exhibits and activities. Many past travelers were particularly enamored with a ride on the working 1917 Otis "birdcage" elevator.

Glen Eyrie Castle Glen Eyrie Castle

Glen Eyrie Castle sits on 700 acres of land, which past visitors routinely describe as both beautiful and peaceful. The founder of Colorado Springs, General William Jackson Palmer, built a huge house for his family in the late 1800s and later remodeled the structure to become the castle it is today. Today, the Navigators, a Christian group, own and operate the property. Primarily, the castle is a conference and event space. If you're not part of an event, not to worry. You're still welcome to visit.

The property runs 90-minute guided tours that trace the history of the castle itself, the Navigators and the surrounding landscape. The property also offers afternoon tea, providing guests with a selection of canapes and desserts to savor while sipping freshly brewed tea. There is also a gift shop filled with souvenirs and Christian books.

Cave of the Winds Mountain Park Cave of the Winds Mountain Park

Though these limestone caverns began forming 70 million years ago when ancient seas receded, they only became a tourist attraction in the late 19th century after two intrepid brothers investigated wind blowing from a rocky crevice in Williams Canyon (just north of Manitou Springs ). Since 1881, visitors have flocked to tour the craggy caves to admire crystalized stalactites and stalagmites. More recently, Cave of the Winds Mountain Park has added other fun activities, including an obstacle course, zip lines, climbing wall, gemstone panning, twisty adventure slide and a 40-mph aerial ride across the canyon.

Recent visitors recommend wearing sturdy shoes for the tours, as treks involve multiple sets of stairs and walking over uneven ground; you'll be crouching under rock formations, too. Adventurous kiddos are entertained for hours with the outdoor attractions, but keep in mind that past travelers say lines can move slowly in peak summer months. Many say an especially fun way to visit is to walk the caves by lantern with engaging and animated guides who tell spooky ghost stories while sharing details about the caverns' history.

National Museum of World War II Aviation National Museum of World War II Aviation

Detailed exhibits at the National Museum of World War II Aviation trace the development of aviation as well as the role it played before and during World War II, with a particular focus on American aviation. Additionally, 20 restored aircraft are located on-site for visitors to view, including a P-47 Thunderbolt and P-38 Lightning. A few select military cars and trucks are also part of the museum's collection.

From the friendly docents to the well laid out exhibits, past travelers found little (if any) fault with this museum. Visitors appreciate getting up close to the historic aircraft. While you can visit the museum on your own, museumgoers highly recommend paying extra for a guided tour led by passionate and knowledgeable WWII aviation experts.

U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center

This facility is the flagship training center of the U.S. Olympic team and the active headquarters of the U.S. Olympic Committee. The complex houses practice facilities for a variety of competitive sports – including fencing, gymnastics, wrestling, shooting, swimming, track cycling and boxing – for the thousands of Olympic athletes who train here annually. Start your trip to the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center at the visitor center, where you'll find detailed information about the complex.

You're welcome to visit the property on your own, but some travelers recommend tagging along on a tour. A highlight for many recent visitors is that tours are often conducted by athletes currently training at the center. Other travelers lamented that Visa, a worldwide sponsor of the Olympic Games, is the only credit card accepted here; cash is not accepted, either. Additionally, keep in mind the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Museum is 2.5 miles southwest of the training center.

Cheyenne Mountain Zoo Cheyenne Mountain Zoo

Animal lovers say the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is a must, especially if you're visiting Colorado Springs with kids. Located south of the city, this facility makes it easy to get up-close to hundreds of furry, scaly and feathery creatures. While here, you can also feed a giraffe, take a spin on the zoo's chairlift-style ride and snap photos with the zoo's residents during animal encounters. With so much to see and do, it's no wonder the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo is one of the Best Zoos in the U.S.

Although the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo houses a variety of animals, the giraffes are by far a visitor favorite. Recent travelers loved being able to feed the giraffes (for a fee), saying it was a great activity for kids and parents alike. Others complimented the zoo's location on the side of Cheyenne Mountain, saying the views are beautiful. That said, the wide walking paths can be quite hilly in parts, and some guests note the climbs may be tiring for little legs

Western Museum of Mining & Industry Western Museum of Mining & Industry

To get a taste for the city's rich history as a Colorado Gold Rush mining town, stop at the Western Museum of Mining & Industry. Here, you'll learn what it took to make the most of the area's resources (like gold) through interactive exhibits, including a model mine drift you can walk through to experience how cramped working conditions were underground. While here, you can also try your hand at gold-panning and see for yourself the effort it takes to get rich.

You're welcome to explore the museum on your own, but many recent visitors recommended tagging along on a guided tour, saying that the tours were educational and fun for all ages. Knowledgeable guides turn on some of the historic machines so you can see how they once played key roles in the mining industry. Some of the machinery can be quite loud; you may want to pack earplugs or headphones if you are sensitive to noise.

What are the best places to visit in colorado.

Colorado travel presents so many opportunities, with plenty of options for adventure seekers and chillaxers alike.

Aspen , Telluride and Vail top the list of the best places to stay in Colorado for skiing and snowboarding. But the state is also home to dozens of gorgeous nature preserves, like Rocky Mountain and Mesa Verde national parks — scenic backdrops for hiking, climbing and getting in tune with nature.

And then there’s Denver — aka Mile High City — easily one of the coolest cities between the coasts, with trendy art districts, a thriving culinary scene and a rich cultural heritage. It’s also one of the most walkable cities in the United States.

Where should you go for your first time in Colorado?

It depends on why you’re visiting. If you’re eager to hit the slopes, Vail and Telluride offer a ritzy experience, while Aspen has more of a down-to-Earth vibe.

If you’re looking to party (maybe à la Colorado bachelorette party style), you can’t go wrong with Denver. Between the wine and brewery tours, the best clubs and bars in the state and access to all the adventuring Colorado has to offer, Denver is a lively and unique destination among American cities.

When you plan your trip with Fora, one of our Colorado travel planners can help you decide which place makes the most sense for you to visit first.

Where are Colorado’s best ski resorts?

Vail and Aspen can be found in Central Colorado, between one and three hours away from Denver. Telluride is closer to Colorado’s southwest border.

Connect with Fora if you’re curious about where to stay in Vail , where to stay in Telluride or where to stay just about anywhere else in Colorado.

Which part of Colorado is the prettiest?

It’s hard to pin down a single area as the “prettiest.” With majestic mountains and colorful canyons to serene lakes and verdant valleys, Colorado has many beautiful places to admire. Even an urban sprawl like Denver has its moments, with tasteful architecture and hundreds of lush parks.

Our guide to the most unique places to stay in Colorado may help you decide where to visit. And you can always chat with a Fora Advisor, who can tailor your trip to your preferences.

How do you prepare for a trip to Colorado?

Connecting with a Colorado travel planner — aka Fora Advisor — is a great start. An advisor can help you plan every detail of your trip, from where to stay to the best hidden gems and local hangouts to explore.

What’s the best month to travel to Colorado for good weather, to see snow, for fun things to do, etc.?

Our guide to the best time to visit Colorado has in-depth answers to this question, but generally, we recommend traveling to Colorado between June and October if you’re looking for the best (i.e., sunny, temperate) weather. If you’re keen on skiing or snow sports, November through March are ideal. When to visit depends on why you’re vacationing in Colorado.

Are there any exciting events in Colorado?

Yep! Winter X-Games and the Telluride Film Festival are some of Colorado’s most popular events, drawing crowds from all over. There are also many food and beer festivals.

A Fora Advisor can let you know if there will be any notable goings-on during your trip to Colorado.

How many Colorado National Parks are there?

Colorado has nearly 20 national parks, monuments and historic sites, as well as dozens of state parks. Rocky Mountain National Park is widely considered the most popular, with stunning views that change dramatically with the seasons.

How many days are enough to visit Colorado?

This is a good question for a Colorado travel planner, as there’s no right answer. Seeing all of Colorado’s gorgeous landmarks and highlights would take weeks, if not months. A Fora Advisor can curate a custom itinerary for you, based on your preferences, budget and availability.

Should I worry about altitude sickness in Colorado?

Altitude sickness can be a cause for concern for some Colorado travelers, particularly those coming from comparatively lower elevations or those with underlying health conditions. Most people experience little, if any, ill effects from altitude sickness unless they are physically exerting themselves — which may be a consideration if you’re planning on skiing or hiking.

Taking things easy on your first day in Colorado, especially if you’re visiting a ski resort or national park, can give your body time to adjust. Ultimately, it’s wise to consult with your doctor before traveling to Colorado if you’re concerned.

Does Colorado have any travel restrictions?

There are no restrictions for US travelers, but international travelers may face some restrictions.

Your Fora Advisor can alert you to specific entry requirements. You can also check out official government websites for more information. Currently, there are no COVID-19 restrictions for travel to Colorado.

Can Fora help me plan a Colorado road trip?

Absolutely! A Colorado travel planner (aka Fora Advisor) can help you plan your entire route, including pit stops and excellent accommodations along the way.

Fora Advisors can also book car rentals for you, if you’re flying from out of state.

Where should I stay in Colorado? What are the best hotels / lodging options?

With ritzy towns like Vail and Telluride and massive metropolises like Denver, Colorado has no shortage of luxe hotels and resorts. The Little Nell in Aspen, The Arrabelle at Vail Square and The Ritz-Carlton Denver are just a few highlights.

There are accommodations for every type of traveler, whether you’re looking for the top Colorado resorts for families or the snazziest boutique hotels in Denver .

Why should you book your travel to Colorado with Fora?

Fora travelers get the benefit of expert travel recommendations and tailored service.

Whether you’re looking for a perfect ski trip in a majestic setting filled with bespoke amenities or dusk-to-dawn excursions in Denver’s charming neighborhoods, your Fora Advisor will make sure your trip is filled with excitement and adventure — or relaxation and revitalization: it’s up to you!

First week of September.

A couple dates to be aware of for RMNP that time of year - Labor Day weekend will be extremely busy and then the 6th-8th is a Scottish festival that draws thousands of people. https://www.scotfest.com/

travel advisor colorado

You could make your way over to Aspen from CS via Independence pass ( closes for winter) with a stop in BV.

Another option is Crested Butte, if you choose not to go to RMNP.

They’re coming the first week of September so fall foliage isn’t a consideration.

Oh, I had a brain fart...lol

Planning a 1, 2 or 3 days in Boulder itinerary is a great way to have a basecamp at any time of the year as you make day trips and enjoy activities along the Front Range.

The University of Colorado’s presence does mean Boulder’s population swells quite a bit when students are in town, so if you’re planning a trip, the dynamic can feel a bit different depending on when you visit.

Boulder is less than two hours from some of Colorado’s premier ski resorts, so a wintertime trip makes a lot of sense too—especially for anyone with a ski pass that grants access to the many ski areas along the Interstate 70 West corridor.

Other times of year there are plenty of nearby towns you’ll want to visit such as Estes Park, which rests right at the base of Rocky Mountain National Park , and Nederland, the gateway to Indian Peaks Wilderness.

The historic mining and engineering town of Golden is also just 30 to 40 minutes away from Boulder by car, and the legendary Red Rocks Amphitheatre is another 10 or 15 minutes farther down the highway.

No matter how you choose to structure your trip to Boulder, this itinerary will give you plenty of ideas on things to do in the home of the CU Buffs.

Table of Contents

How Many Days in Boulder?

If you’re looking at spending 1 day in Boulder then focus on exploring the area within (and close to) the city rather than trying to go pack in the many fantastic attractions just outside Boulder.

A stay of 2 days in Boulder is a nice way to work in some more contrasting urban and outdoor time. For example, you could spend your first day in the town and then devote your second day to making a drive over to the town of Golden.

With 3 days you could take a day trip to Rocky Mountain NP or drive back down south, possibly stopping through such as the town of Morrison, or even Colorado Springs, depending on your tolerance for driving distance. You can even use Boulder as a base over Denver if spending longer here.

Getting To & Around Boulder

Renting a car, or driving to Boulder with your own car, is not a bad idea for anyone planning a longer stay or looking to make excursions up into the mountains.

If you’re driving to Boulder, you might likely arrive by way of Denver and Interstate 70, Interstate 25, or any of the other major highways around the area. US Highway 36 is Boulder’s main artery (28th Street once you’re in town), and State Highway 93 transitions to Broadway if you’re coming into Boulder from the south.

If you need to rent a car for this trip, you can browse Rentalcars.com which aggregates several options from many different car hire suppliers.

Boulder is full of public transportation and rideshare options. The RTD bus system is easy to navigate, and Uber and Lyft drivers are always around for anyone with a smartphone who uses these apps.

It’s also an extremely friendly place for bikers and pedestrians, with a network of public trails and pathways that’s truly second to none. Bike lanes are also commonplace on the roads around town, so motorists tend to know how to share the ride with people on bicycles.

You could even choose to rent a bike during your stay as a means of being able to zip around town and avoid the hassle of parking when CU students are around and things are busiest.

Be sure to explore the main avenues of Broadway, where you’ll pass right by “The Hill”—CU’s always-buzzing student area—and Pearl Street, which has everything from sushi restaurants to concert halls and retail stores.

1, 2, or 3 Days in Boulder Itinerary

Whether you’re staying for a short time or are planning a three-day itinerary in which you’ll branch out more and explore, the following list includes some ideas for your stay in this Colorado Front Range college town.

Day 1 – Pearl St, Boulder Canyon & Indian Peaks Wilderness

Have breakfast in boulder and visit pearl st.

Boulder isn’t especially renowned for any one category when it comes to food, but its wide selection of delicious breakfast spots stands out.

Among some of the best options are The Buff , a favorite of CU sports fans on game days (good luck on a Saturday or Sunday morning after 9 a.m.), Snooze , which is retro-flavored and also has a Denver location, and Lucille’s , a Cajun-style breakfast and brunch place with a covered front porch and options like beignets and chicory coffee.

Explore Downtown Boulder

After breakfast on this first day of your Boulder itinerary, be sure to head over to Pearl Street Mall, where retailers, restaurants, and bars line the street along with impressively manicured stands of flowers in the warm months of the year.

If you happen to be visiting on a Saturday between April to November then you can also make your way to Boulder Farmers Market to check out the fresh produce and crafts on offer. Alternatively, The Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse is nearby and is a unique place to stop by and enjoy tea or simply marvel at the unique architecture.

If it’s rainy then the Museum of Boulder is a great place to learn about the local history of the town or head to the Boulder Book Store which has an impressive 3 levels of titles to explore.

University of Colorado in Downtown Boulder

Drive Up Boulder Canyon to Nederland

If you’re only spending 1 day here you may want to stay closer to town, but for anyone willing to make a fairly short round trip drive of a little over an hour, take a drive up Boulder Canyon to the town of Nederland, which was founded during the mining booms of the 19th century.

Nowadays, it’s a great place to enjoy a walk around and stop in some of the local shops, such as Nature’s Own, where you can browse a selection of gems and minerals.

If you’d like to eat or grab coffee in “Ned,” as the locals call it, check out the New Moon Bakery and Cafe or Crosscut Pizzeria & Taphouse right across the street.

Go For a Hike in Indian Peaks Wilderness

Nederland is also a de facto gateway to the Indian Peaks Wilderness area for anyone coming from Boulder, so if you make the drive up Highway 119 to Nederland, consider continuing from there to any of the Indian Peaks Wilderness areas that lie immediately to the west.

Some of the more popular trailheads include the East Portal, the Hessie, and the Caribou Road area, but the Indian Peaks is managed jointly by the United States Forest Service and the National Park Service, so you have an immense selection of hikes to choose from here.

This area is a photographer’s dream, as sightings of wild animals like elk and moose are fairly common in the high country.

Hiking in the Indian Peaks Wilderness

Dinner on Pearl Street

If this is the end of your trip to Boulder, then be sure to get out on the town for dinner at one of Boulder’s best restaurants.

The word “best” is obviously subjective here, but there tend to be some local favorites in certain categories — Jax Fish House or Japango for seafood and drinks; West End Tavern for a brewery with bar food and beers; Zoe Ma Ma for Chinese — so grabbing a local guidebook or checking out some Yelp pages to narrow things down isn’t a bad idea.

After eating, the Boulder Creek path is not far away for an evening stroll.

Day 2 – Chautauqua Park, Golden & Fiske Planetarium

Early morning walk or hike at chautauqua park.

The Flatirons that line the foothills to the west of Boulder stand out alongside Bear Peak as local landmarks, and you can see them up close with a relatively short hike at Boulder’s Chautauqua Park.

An early morning walk or hike here is an ideal way to kick off one of the days in town. I say “walk or hike” because you really can push things about as far as you want in this outdoor recreation area.

You’ll see college kids meandering slowly up the main trail to take selfies and then walk back to their cars, but you’ll also see local diehards getting ready to trail run all the way up Bear Peak.

Walking in Chautauqua Park

Rent Bikes and Ride a Trail by Golden

If you’re looking for another way to experience the outdoors around Boulder, think about renting a bike. This could look like simply checking out a road bike from a local shop in Boulder to explore, or you could head over to Golden and stop in somewhere like Golden Bike Shop to rent a mountain bike.

The entire area around this classic mining town is renowned for its mountain biking trails. Local favorite areas include North Table Mountain Park and Apex Park.

Check Out the Fiske Planetarium

An especially good option for families is a stop at the Fiske Planetarium, which is located just a stone’s throw to the southeast of the main University of Colorado campus.

There are different exhibitions in the planetarium’s museum area at any given time, but main attractions here are the Fulldome Films and Star Shows, which feature immersive theater experiences projected on a 65-foot dome with an excellent digital sound system.

Evening Live Music in Boulder

If you want to end things with a fun night out in Boulder, the town’s main live music venues of The Fox Theatre and Boulder Theater are up there with Denver’s best in terms of bringing in top-notch musical acts.

The Fox is located on The Hill and tends to draw more of a student crowd, while Boulder Theater is right in the thick of Pearl Street, making it an easy walk from many of the best bars and restaurants in town.

Day 3 – Estes Park, Rocky Mountain National Park & NoBo Arts District

Drive to estes park.

If you’re looking at spending 3 days in this Colorado town, consider taking the time to really make a trip up to the mountains and visit the town of Estes Park.

As Nederland is to Indian Peaks, Estes is to Rocky Mountain National Park, as this little tourist town gets absolutely flooded with National Park visitors every summer.

Weekdays are never too busy in terms of crowds, though, so stopping in Estes for breakfast at The Notchtop Cafe or The Egg is a great way to start a day.

Scenery in Estes Park

Visit Rocky Mountain National Park

After stopping through the basecamp town of Estes Park, head into Rocky Mountain National Park via any of the main accesses near Estes (favorites include Beaver Meadows, Fall River, and Wild Basin).

Options for activities in the Park are practically endless, as you could do anything from simply stopping along the road here and there to admire scenes like the Continental Divide over Moraine Park, to booking a full day of guided fly fishing.

As with Indian Peaks, opportunities at seeing wildlife here are everywhere, so be sure to bring the camera and/or binoculars.

If you haven’t rented your own car, it is possible to book a guided tour from Boulder.

Dream Lake Trail in Rocky Mountain National Park

Stop in NoBo Arts District

The North Boulder Arts District is based around Broadway as it runs between Boulder’s rocky foothills to the west and the North Boulder’s residential neighborhoods.

Since it’s right on your way back into town as you’re returning from Estes Park, consider stopping in this part of town for dinner or to visit any of the local art studios and galleries.

Favorite restaurants in this area include Protos for Italian cuisine and La Choza for authentic Mexican street tacos.

Where to Stay in Boulder

Hotel Boulderado – If you’re looking for a luxury option while visiting Boulder, then this historic Victorian hotel is a great choice. Located in a perfect, central area, they have a number of lovely rooms available, a great on-site restaurant and some rooms have Rocky Mountain views.

Boulder Twin Lakes Inn – An excellent mid-range option, this hotel makes for a great base in Boulder. They have a range of clean and comfortable rooms on offer, there is a hot tub that is open all year and there is also a buffet breakfast available each morning.

Private Rental – A private rental – such as this lovely 1-bedroom house – is a fantastic choice for those looking for a bit more independence on their trip to Boulder. There are countless options available in the city that can suit many travel styles and budgets.
