Safari is tied to the version of macOS installed. Normally, Apple will not offer a Standalone installer of Safari.

With a newer version of macOS will come a newer version of Safari.

The Age of this computer will Govern what newer version of macOS it will Qualify to install. Use About this Mac from the Apple Icon on Desktop - the required Information will be there.

With the above information in-hand - follow this How to get old versions of macOS and verify what version this computer Qualifies to install.  For Best results use Safari to commence the download as Others may not work.

Safari will open a redirect and open the Apple Store where the download can commence

Your question is unclear. Do you only wish to update Safari? Or do you wish to upgrade Sierra to a newer OS? As you may know, Safari is installed with the Macs operating system and normally can not be individually installed. A newer version of Safari is normally installed when the OS is upgraded. If that does not suit your needs, then the next bit solution is to install another browser such as Firefox or one of the many which are available on the Apple App Store's site.

Hello, BSKEDR1.

Safari is typically updated by installing Software Updates that may be available for your macOS. You can check and see if any updates are available by clicking Apple menu > About This Mac > Software Updates... If any updates are available they will be presented that and you can install them. If no updates are listed, then it is assumed that none are available for your current macOS version.

The only other way to update Safari is by upgrading the macOS to a newer generational version as High Sierra to Catalina, for example.

If you find the Safari has no updates available and it is lacking somehow or being disallowed at certain websites, you might download some alternate browser such as Brave or Firefox .

Also, to be clear, software update generally means to install software to update the macOS currently running on the Mac; update Catalina 10.15.1 to Catalina 10.15.7, for example.

A software upgrade is usually a generational step up to a newer macOS; upgrade from 10.13 High Sierra to 10.14 Mojave, for example, or from 10.15 Catalina to macOS 11 Big Sur.

Upgrades do not happen automatically. They must be initiated by a user with admin privileges.

Safari 12 is now available for macOS Sierra and High Sierra

Comes with macOS Mojave by default

safari pour high sierra

Safari 12, the latest version of Apple ’s web browser, is now available to download for people running macOS Sierra (10.12.6) and macOS High Sierra (10.13.6).

This new version of the browser, which is the default browser in the upcoming macOS Mojave (10.14) update, comes with a range of new features, and if you can’t wait until Mojave launches on September 24 you can get the updated browser for the older versions of macOS.

In fact, if you use Safari as your daily web browser then it’s a good idea to update to Safari 12 as soon as possible, as it includes security updates. To download and install Safari 12 right now, open up the Mac App Store, click on ‘Updates’ and you’ll see the Safari 12 update waiting for you there.

Safari 12 features

So, what’s new in Safari 12? Apple has included support for website icons in tabs, which makes it easier to organize and find open websites when you’re browsing with multiple tabs open, as well as password suggestions and an alert if you're using a password for a service that Safari has saved for another site.

This should encourage people to use different passwords for different websites, rather than using one password for many.

Users also have better control over how pop-up windows are handled on websites, and ad retargeting suppression has been bolstered so that it reduces advertisers' ability to identify unique Mac devices. The web browser also disables any extensions that cause it to perform more slowly by default.

So, even if you're planning on upgrading to macOS Mojave next week with Safari 12, we’d recommend installing it on your Mac as soon as possible, so that you can access these new features and benefit from the added security.

Tips & Tricks

Troubleshooting, safari 12 released for macos sierra & high sierra.

Safari icon

Apple has released Safari 12 for Mac users running macOS High Sierra and macOS Sierra.

The same Safari 12 web browser ships bundled with macOS Mojave by default, so macOS Mojave users will not find the same software update available to any computer running Mojave.

Safari 12 brings a variety of new features and changes to the Safari web browser, including support for website icons in tabs, password suggestions and an alert if you’re reusing saved passwords in Safari, support for toggling pop-up behavior on websites, ad retargeting suppression, improved security features, and Safari now defaults to disabling any extensions that could negatively impact web browsing performance.

If you’re on macOS Sierra (10.12.6) or macOS High Sierra (10.13.6) then you will find Safari 12.0 available to download now from the Mac App Store Updates tab, accessible from the  Apple menu.

Safari 12 for Mac

If you use Safari as your default web browser , or even as a backup or alternative web browser on your Mac, you should likely update to the latest version available to you.

The next major version of Mac system software, MacOS Mojave (10.14), is set to be released to the general public on September 24, and MacOS Mojave includes Safari 12.0 as part of the broader system software update. Thus if you plan on immediately updating to macOS Mojave, you may find it less urgent to update the Safari web browser in Sierra or High Sierra since you’ll be updating system software soon anyway. For the rest of Mac users or anyone who plans on delaying the Mojave update, updating to Safari 12 is recommended.

Many other software updates are available in the Apple ecosystem as well, including iOS 12 , WatchOS 5, tvOS 12 , and many updates to various apps like Pages, Numbers, Keynote, as well as tons of third party apps. Over the next few weeks, it’s a good idea to periodically check for any software updates for both these new system software versions and for updates to the apps you use and rely on.

if you right click the webloc file you can choose open with… which does not crash the finder.

I update to Safari 12 on macOS Sierra 10.12.6 ! Not run old Safari 11 files .webloc on Safari 12 and if you want rename it on Finder crash and the window collapse !! Spotlight crash if you don’t disable Find in Bookmarks and History Problems with Extensions … I go back to Safari 11.1.2 (disable SIP with Terminal (csrutil disable) on Recovery OS mode … and reinstall Safari 11.1.2 Sierra.pkg)

There are random pages where the content isn’t loading? or it’s showing only as white blocks. So now using other browsers until this gets sorted.

Can you give an example where that happens? I have not seen that issue with Safari 12 of blank pages. Try clearing out all of your Safari caches/settings and start over?

Since updated to Safari 12, it stop working and each time i try to open it, my whole mac starts to work as slow as a nail

Since this was updated, my Safari 12 has not been working. Initially my browser bar was gone (which it still is), and now when I click on any of my favorites, I get a blank page. Nothing loads.

Disabling unsigned extensions is obnoxious. Was that really a problem?

I’m not positive, but I really feel like Safari 12 has negatively impacted my battery life. I’ve made no other changes in my computer at all since updating, and I’ve just been noticing my battery level dropping quicker doing the same tasks I always do. I can’t see anyone else talking about this, so maybe it’s just me.

Having same problem as FarmerBob. In column view, clicking on a Safari/.webloc icon crashes Finder instantly.

Hitting get info on a Safari/.webloc icon shows that “open with” is Paparazzi. It’s greyed out so you can’t change it.

Not great solutions: Delete Paparazzi (or whichever app may be culprit) Disable preview column (View > Show View Options)

BAD UPDATE! Since updating to this version, if I select a .webloc file in a window where the Finder would have to make a preview, the Finder crashes every time.

The same thing happens to me ! I tried deleting the associated quicklook preference files, but it didn’t help.

I have this problem, too. I had some success by changing file suffix from .webloc to .url.

1) Control-click on the webloc file, or group of files.

2) Select “Rename” from the fly-out menu.

3) Use the curser to highlight “webloc” suffix and type “url” (without quotes).

4) When you do this, a pop-up message appears asking, “Are you sure you want to change the extension from “.webloc” to “.url”?” If you make this change, your document may open in a different application. To proceed, click on the “Use .url” button on the bottom right of the pop-up.

While not a great solution, it should stop the finder crash/relaunch.

Btw, there is a free application called “Webloc Finagler” that will do this webloc/url conversion for you via drag and drop—I stumbled upon the app in the apple discussion board. All credit goes to developer Mark Douma.

Apple Discussion link: https://discussions.apple.com/message/11978417#message11978417

Direct link to the app (110kb): http://www.markdouma.com/developer/WeblocFinagler.zip

Playing a game full screen, I get repeated errors saying it looks like you are trying to type a text which is not supported in full screen. Exit full screen or stay. That’s fine for the first time, but repeated over and over every two seconds is disruptive. I’m not typing anything ! Just using my finger to move items as designed.

Chrome. Here I come. Grrrrrrrr

After the update my adblock plus stopped to work, so I have to disabled it and install adblock. Works fine again. It says you web browser may run slow with adblock, but I prefer a bit slow that load tons of ads.

Do NOT do this update, many sites I go to regularly do NOT work under it.

What problems are you having with Safari 12? What kind of errors?

Now my search engine DDG, lost its ad blocker too. I’m not a techi, but this ticks me off. Now I have pop ups. That stinks.

Yeah! But how to remove Safari 12 and back to for example 11.1.2? Because you know… java plugins and stuff :)

What he said. How do you go back to Safari 11?

double ditto!

How to Use the New Safari Web Browser Settings in macOS High Sierra

safari icon

Individual Website Settings

One of the most welcome new changes in Safari 11 is the ability to customize a range of settings for individual websites. Once these options are set up for a site, Safari applies them automatically so you don't have to bother with them again. Here's how.

  • Navigate to a site you frequently visit.
  • Right-click on the URL or website name that appears in the address bar, and select "Settings for This Website". Alternatively, click Safari in the menu bar and you'll see the same option under Preferences.
  • Select your preferences from the drop-down pane that appears below the address bar to control how the website behaves, either by checking the boxes or selecting a setting from the available options.

Safari's built-in Reader mode strips online articles of extraneous web page furniture to make them more readable. Reader is usually enabled by clicking an icon that sometimes appears in the far left of the address bar, but you can check "Use Reader when available" to switch to this by default.

The box next to "Enable content blockers" lets you set whether to activate any ad-blocking extensions you may have installed, while the Page Zoom setting lets you adjust the size that website fonts and images display, allowing you to make them easier to read and navigate.

Screen Shot 5

The last three options in the preferences pane let you choose whether to allow or deny the site access to your Mac's camera and microphone, and whether to enable location detection. If your preference is likely to change from time to time for these, set them to "Ask", and Safari will query you whenever access is requested by the site.

Safari Website Preferences Tab

Helpfully, Apple has added a new tab to Safari preferences for you to keep track of your individual website settings. You can access it at any time by clicking "Preferences" In the Safari menu bar and selecting the Websites tab.

Intelligent Tracking Prevention

Another new feature Apple has added in the latest Safari is Intelligent Tracking Prevention (ITP). Apple's own testing has found that popular websites can harbor more than 70 cross-site tracking and third-party cookie trackers that all silently collect data on users while making the browsing experience increasingly sluggish.

What's new with Safari in macOS High Sierra

Safari on Mac

With the macOS High Sierra update, you're going to see some small but significant changes to the way you browse the internet. Whether you're trying to keep your browsing habits out of the hands of major corporations or just want to give more or less permissions to websites individually, Safari will make you feel like you're more in control of your internet lifestyle. Here's what's new with Safari in macOS High Sierra.

Intelligent tracking prevention

Apple wants you to feel like you are more in control of what companies do with your web browsing activities. In macOS High Sierra, Safari will have a feature that tries to stop websites from tracking your cross-site behavior to restrict what companies can do with your personal data.

You know when you visit to Amazon and look at some gadget you might want to buy, then you go to another website and an advertisement for that exact gadget pops up? Safari's intelligent tracking prevention hopes to stop that from happening. Plus a few other tracking bits.

You can set up Safari in macOS High Sierra to "try to prevent cross-site tracking" in the app settings under Privacy. It's not guaranteed to work. Some companies will improve tracking technology to override the block, but it'll help speed up your browsing experience and at least some websites won't be tracking your internet activities anymore.

Autoplay is not longer automatic

Probably one of the most annoying things about browsing the internet is that moment when a video starts playing while your reading an article and it's late at night while your family is asleep and you have to rush to find the mute button to stop it from waking everyone up.

On Safari in macOS High Sierra, you can disable autoplay for audio, video, and both. No more surprise songs appearing while you're in a meeting.

In the settings section of Safari, you'll be able to select whether you want to allow all autoplay content, just stop media that plays sound, or never autoplay anything. Plus, you can customize individual websites with different settings each.

Master your iPhone in minutes

iMore offers spot-on advice and guidance from our team of experts, with decades of Apple device experience to lean on. Learn more with iMore!

Customizing your website browsing experience

Speaking of customizing individual websites with different settings, you can customize a lot of your web browsing settings for every single website you visit, which is great if you want to, say, allow ads on your favorite websites (ahem, iMore) so they can make a little money but block others. You can set reader view for some websites while leaving others as is. Even such features as page zoom, camera use, microphone enable, location tracking, and notifications can all be customized on an individual basis.

As you visit websites, they will show up on the customization list where you can enable or disable different features. You can also set every other site with a specific setting. For example, you could enable always autoplay for YouTube but never autoplay when visiting all other websites. Then, when you visit a new site on which you would like autoplay enabled, you could add it to the list by customizing it.

Settings for individual site customization are found in the Websites section of Safari settings in macOS High Sierra.

Automatic Reader View

As noted above, you can customize individual websites with specific browsing settings, and that includes Reader View. When you enable reader view for websites, it hides the extraneous bits of content, like sidebar social networking stuff, the comments section, and ads.

You can set up Reader View on Safari in macOS Sierra, but it goes away when you leave a web page. With High Sierra, you can an entire website with Reader View instead of just a web page. Plus, you can turn your entire web browsing experience into permanent Reader View. Of course, it only works with supported sites. Some websites don't have Reader View options. Those jerks.

How to enable automatic Reader View for specific websites in Safari on macOS High Sierra

Safari turned up to 11

Apple did some behind-the-scenes fine tuning to Safari in macOS High Sierra to make it faster. Much faster. According to benchmark tests done in May of 2017, Safari performed better than other big browsers using macOS and Windows dual-booted on a Mac. If you didn't think Safari was up to speed before, give it a try again after the High Sierra update and see if you notice a difference.

How to Customize Safari Website Preferences in macOS High Sierra

Tom Nelson

The version of Safari included with macOS High Sierra brings new and significant abilities to customize how it works with each website you visit. You may have already read about Safari’s new ability to block user tracking by websites, or its new ability to prevent video from auto-playing. But Safari rolls out a whole new way to work with websites, putting you in control and allowing for quite a bit of customization in your viewing.

Safari 11, the version included with macOS High Sierra, has a number of new features, including advanced methods of preventing user tracking (Intelligent Tracking Prevention). But in this Rocket Yard Guide , we’re going to look at Safari’s new ability to customize how a website looks and performs on a site-by-site basis. It’s a powerful tool that can help you tame the wild web.

safari pour high sierra

Website customization works on two main levels; you can define how all websites will be handled, and you can specify how individual websites will be managed. When the two are in conflict, the settings for a specific website override those set for all websites.

A simple example is that you may set all websites to never auto-play audio or video content, but then configure your favorite video service to allow auto-play. When you browse the web, you should never encounter a website that auto-plays sound or video, until you land on the sites where you’ve specifically allowed auto-play to work.

safari pour high sierra

Safari Website Customization Safari supports a number of customization controls for each website you visit, giving you a great deal of flexibility in how a website behaves. With Safari 11, there are eight specific items you can control for each website you visit:

Reader is a way for Safari to strip out unnecessary elements of the webpage and just display the main content. Reader will usually strip out embedded video, most ads, and sponsored links, leaving just the main section of the webpage.

Earlier versions of Safari required you to manually select Reader mode whenever you visited a website, but with Safari 11 and later, you can assign websites to automatically open in Reader mode.

Content Blockers have been part of Safari for a while; they were originally designed to prevent those annoying popup or pop-under windows. The newest version of the content blocker goes much further, providing a reasonable ad blocking mechanism as well as the ability to manage the settings on a website-by-website basis.

Auto-Play helps you control websites that love to start playing embedded audio and video content as soon as you land on the page. Auto-Play puts you in control of how audio and video content on a website are delivered to you.

You can allow content to start playing on its own, as the website intended, or you can take control and put a stop to the automatic running of audio and video, which can be a bit annoying, especially when you have multiple websites open.

Like all of Safari’s website management settings, you can control auto-play on a site-by-site basis, allowing all auto play, preventing audio, preventing video, or preventing both.

safari pour high sierra

Page Zoom lets you set a zoom level for websites that are fond of using small type or thumbnails, or even for sites that have huge images that force you to zoom out to see the whole image. Page Zoom can be set for zoom rates from 50% to 300% on a site-by-site basis.

Camera allows you to specify whether a website can make use of your Mac’s camera. You can allow a website to access your Mac’s camera always, never, or have the site ask each time. Settings are on a website-by-website basis.

Microphone performs a similar task to Camera, allowing you to control which websites can make use of your Mac’s microphone.

Location services have been part of the Mac for a while. Now with Safari 11 and later, Apple has expanded the granularity so that you can specify which websites are allowed to use location services, as opposed to previous Mac versions, where the only options for the Safari app were to turn location services on or off.

Notifications center already allowed you to enable or disable notifications delivered via Safari, but the addition of Notifications to Safari’s Websites preferences rounds up all those websites that want to send you notifications into one convenient place for easier management.

Configuring Websites Generally speaking, all website configurations are applied via Safari’s preferences, though there’s another method to make quick changes to a website you’re viewing. We’ll show you the Safari preference method, as it’s the best way to manage all of the websites you routinely come across in your travels. At the end of this guide, we’ll show you how to check the configuration for the website you’re currently viewing, and make quick changes when needed.

Let’s get started by launching the version of Safari that comes with macOS High Sierra or later.

Browse to a favorite website. We want to start with a website loaded up in Safari so we can easily view the various website settings.

From the Safari menu, select Preferences.

In the preferences toolbar, select the Websites icon.

The Websites preferences will be divided into two main panes. The left-hand sidebar contains the various customization types you can employ; the main pane displays the websites that the customization applies to.

Select a customization to manage from the left-hand pane. In the center pane, you’ll see the currently open websites listed at the top, and previously configured websites listed just below.

Each website will have a dropdown menu that allows you to pick the customization options you wish to apply. Customization is applied across an entire website, and not to individual pages that make up a website. You can change the customization options at any time, though we’ve noticed that sometimes you need to reload the website for the changes to take effect.

The available options for each customization type are:

  • Reader : On or Off
  • Content Blocker : On or Off
  • Auto-Play : Allow All Auto-Play, Stop Media with Sound, Never Auto-Play
  • Page Zoom : Zoom rates of 50%, 75%, 85%, 100%, 115%, 125%, 150%, 175%, 200%, 250%, and 300%.
  • Camera : Ask, Deny, Allow
  • Microphone : Ask, Deny, Allow
  • Location : Ask, Deny, Allow
  • Notification : Allow, Deny

safari pour high sierra

Global Settings You may notice that for most of the customization types that you can set, there’s an option in the bottom right corner of the center pane to set the customization option “When visiting other websites.” The options will be the same as the ones for the customization selected in the sidebar.

Global settings are a powerful way to control how websites you rarely visit, or new ones you stumble upon, will be viewed within Safari. If you decide after visiting a new site that you want to change the settings, you can do so for the current site without changing the global settings, leaving your preferences intact for other new sites you visit.

Viewing and Changing Website Preferences From the URL As mentioned earlier, there’s another way to view the current settings for a website you’re visiting without having to open the Safari preferences. Instead, use the Safari menu, and select “Settings for this Website.”

After a moment, the current settings will be displayed in a pane that becomes visible just below the URL field. You can use this pane to view, as well as make alterations to, the current settings. Changes you make in this pane only affect the website you’re currently viewing.

Just the Beginning Safari’s site-by-site customization options bring new control, letting you dictate how a website behaves when invited onto your Mac. I suspect over time we’ll see additional customization options added, as well as refinements to the original eight we covered here.

If you have a suggestion for additional customization options in Safari for the website-by-website feature, let us know in the Comments below.

Hello The above article is very helpful, however, I’m trying to remove some of the listed sites under my tabs Reader, content blockers, Auto-play, etc but the Remove button is greyed out. How do I remove the listed websites ? Many thanks

My content blocking list disappeared. It was working fairly well and then I used “Cookie” and didn’t know I had to uncheck “website preferences” otherwise it deleted them with the cookies.

Anyone know how I get it back?

So its starting to catch up to Firefox w user chosen AddOns.

The ‘Quit Safari’ option is greyed out. How do I get it active again.

Command-Q is the general purpose “Quit current application” command. Command-W will close the current tab.

I have Safari 13.1.2 but just saw that the last version is 16-something. I couldn't find a way to install this last version. I guess it's not possible, right? The browser is very buggy. A good amount of sites don't work properly anymore, iCloud Tabs haven't worked for years. I think I have to changer browser. I can't update higher than High Sierra anymore (except potentially Mojave).

Yeah, old versions of Safari don't display most web pages properly, or at all. And unfortunately, you can't install Safari 16 (at least to my knowledge) on High Sierra. Have you considered using Google Chrome instead? The latest version of Chrome works fine on High Sierra (although that's the minimum requirement to run it). Also, what Mac are you using? Why can't you upgrade past High Sierra?

Silly John Fatty said: Yeah, I'm thinking of moving to Chrome. When a website is broken in Safari, I would usually open it in Chrome and then it would work. I can't update anymore because my Mac is too old, it's a mid 2010 Mac Pro. I have a GPU that would actually allow me to upgrade to Mojave, but that's a bit of a sketchy thing, and in addition to that, it doesn't make a big difference, because Mojave is outdated as well. Will have to get myself a new Mac sometimes. Click to expand...
rm5 said: Why would the upgrade to Mojave be "sketchy?" And what GPU is this? Also, have you considered using OpenCore Legacy Patcher? I used to run a 2010 Mac Pro as my main computer until very recently, and I was able to install Monterey (second-latest macOS version) just fine on it. It had a W5500 video card. The only reason why I stopped using it as my main computer is because the CPU was too slow (and hence I had issues with Logic Pro and just altogether slowness ); the GPU was plenty fast. Silly John Fatty said: I have a RX 580, but you lose the boot mode function and other stuff. If you have a problem and don't have a native card, it sucks. Click to expand...
Silly John Fatty said: I haven't used Legacy Patcher, but I want to stay on the "official" Apple way. It's too complicated for me (I'm a noob, like, totally) and I know it's more expensive to do it the Apple way, but I don't have to think about it (I hate thinking about anything Computers – they're not a purpose in my eyes but just the means for a higher purpose). Silly John Fatty said: I imagine you had to make quite some mods to run Monterey on yours. Click to expand...
rm5 said: Right, that's why I've kept my original Mac-flashed video card (ATI Radeon HD 5770) That's your choice... of course I recommend you try out OCLP, but if you don't want to, you will be stuck on those older macOS releases. Actually not. OpenCore does all the modifications for you. Click to expand...
Silly John Fatty said: You install OpenCore and that's it? Then you proceed to just install a newer OS? What about security measures, data privacy? Click to expand...

Silly John Fatty said: Interesting. How "official" is this? Is it comparable to let's say a jailbroken iOS device? How "nasty" is it basically? Click to expand...
rm5 said: It's not bad at all, and I'm not just saying that. OCLP works all the way all the time, and there's not really any "catch" to it AFAIK. Click to expand...

Silly John Fatty said: I looked a little bit into your video and also in other threads here on MacRumors, and it does look complicated to be honest (at least if you really want to know what's happening and have a good overview of that). In addition, my Mac is old and consumes a lot of power, I think it's better if I sell it and get a clean solution. In the short term, it would have been great if I could have installed a newer version of Safari, but I guess that's not really possible. Click to expand...

macOS High Sierra review: Incremental update worthy of your time, eventually

Roman Loyola

Operating system updates can be an exciting time for users. There’s the potential to be more productive with new apps, interface enhancements that make your computer easier to use, and flashy new features that remind you how much of an impact technology can have on your life.

If you want to get caught up in the excitement of an OS update, you should read Jason Snell’s iOS 11 review . iOS 11 is where all the action is right now.

But waitagoshdarnminute , this is the macOS High Sierra review. You want to know all about Apple’s upgrade for the Mac. Well, you’ve come to the right place, but if you are expecting fireworks, you won’t find them here—though you might find them in High Sierra eventually. (I’ll explain later.)

With macOS High Sierra (version 10.13, if you’re keeping track), life on the Mac doesn’t change dramatically. It doesn’t have a lot of new features that will widen your eyes in excitement. But a lot of the changes are in the background and under the hood, and they lay a foundation for better things to come.

With that in mind, let’s address the main question right now: Should you upgrade to macOS High Sierra? Despite what I just said about better things to come, there are several new features you can take advantage of now, mostly in Apple Photos. (I’ll provide an overview of the new Photos, but there’s enough happening in the app to cover in a separate article .) Apple’s Notes and Mail apps get a few helpful tweaks, too. So there is something in High Sierra to get your virtual hands on.

But these are things you don’t need to get to right away. If you want to put off upgrading to High Sierra, that would be fine, you won’t miss much—though the main reason to upgrade now is because High Sierra includes security fixes. Other than that, these are changes in High Sierra that you’ll want to have sooner or later. Then you’ll finally get to see though fireworks—perhaps in virtual reality.

macOS High Sierra: Apple File System

APFS (Apple File System) is the key under-the-hood feature of macOS High Sierra. Computers needs a file system in order to manage your data, and until now, that file system was HFS+ (Hierarchical File System).

recovery mode disk utii apfsphigh sierra

APFS is available when you format a drive in Disk Utility, but it’s currently only for SSDs.

 alt=

APFS was created because HFS+ was outdated—it was created in 1985. Storage devices are much bigger now, and we create more files than ever (just take a look at your photo collection if you need proof). Developers have been aching for a new file system for a while, and Apple has finally answered their prayers.

There’s a catch, though. APFS, right now, is only available if you’re using flash storage or a SSD (solid-state drive) on your Mac. During the beta run, APFS could be installed on a hard drive or Fusion drive, but that support was pulled when High Sierra reached golden master status. Apple said that hard drive and Fusion drive support will be available in a future macOS update.

The features of APFS include:

  • Built-in encryption and support for full disk encryption;
  • Snapshots, which used to record the state of your storage device based on points in time, helpful for backups;
  • Space sharing, which makes it easier to resize and mange different partitions;
  • Faster performance;
  • The ability to better manage very large storage capacities and files.

When you upgrade to High Sierra, the installer automatically coverts to APFS if you’re using a Mac with a SSD. I didn’t experience any problems that I could attribute to APFS while I used the High Sierra beta, but that doesn’t mean they won’t happen. With APFS released to the general public, it’s possible new problems could arise. This possibility would be the main reason why you might want to wait to upgrade until the first major High Sierra update is released.

macOS High Sierra: Virtual reality and Metal 2

Virtual reality has made a lot of noise in the PC market, but you haven’t heard much about it for the Mac. Apple hopes that changes with High Sierra, which now has support for VR headsets like the HTC Vive . Apple also has VR partnerships with Valve, Unity, and Epic, and plans for 360-degree video in Final Cut Pro X and Motion.

HTC Vive + Deluxe Audio Strap

macOS High Sierra has built-in support for VR headgear like the HTC Vive.

 alt=

High Sierra also includes support for Metal 2, Apple’s graphics API. In addition to support for VR and better performance, Metal 2 has support for external GPU hardware, which could mean you can boost your MacBook’s graphics performance by using Thunderbolt to hook up an external box with a top-end graphics card.

You may not be able to take advantage of VR and Metal 2 support right away, though. Developers need to create Mac-compatible VR software, and software needs to be developed for Metal 2. Down the line, we could see some really cool stuff.

macOS High Sierra: HEVC and HEIF

Apple has two new file formats that actually debuted in iOS 11: High Efficiency Video Encoding (HEVC) is a new format for video, and High Efficiency Image File Format (HEIF) is a new format for photos.

HEVC, also called H.265, offers smaller file sizes than the previous standard video format, H.264. Smaller file sizes are important, since we’re now living in a world of 4K video—and if you’ve ever made a 4K video on your iPhone, you know that the files can get pretty big.

HEIF does a similar thing: it makes file sizes smaller than compared to JPEG compression.

h265 sample

Both of the videos in this still image were encoded at 1080p at 400 kbps. The top video (706KB file) used HEVC (a.k.a. H.265). The bottom video (751KB file) used H.264. Click to enlarge. Sample files available at x.265.com .

 alt=

With support for these formats built into High Sierra, you’ll be able you read the HEVC and HEIF files from your iPhone (provided that you have one that can create HEVC and HEIF files). Macs with a Skylake processor or newer will be able to provide hardware acceleration for HEVC; Macs with an older processor can still play HEVC, but playback is software-based and performance may be affected.

Sometimes it can be scary to use new file formats, especially when the new formats replace ones that are ubiquitous. You can decide to not use the new formats on your iPhone, as explained in our overview of iOS 11 . HEVC and HEIF do offer significant benefits, and Apple has made provisions to make sure you can export your HEVC videos and HEIF photos into H.264 and JPEG, respectively.

macOS High Sierra: Safari 11

Finally, something in High Sierra you can really get your hands on: new Safari features. There are several new features in Safari 11, but there are a couple that stand out.

The first is control over media auto play. You know those annoying auto-play videos that appear when you visit a website (like Macworld.com)? Safari 11 now gives you the option to stop those videos from automatically playing. Or you can let the video play, but mute the auto. You can create a list of websites with each site having its own settings. With auto-play videos so prevalent on the web now (despite the widespread dislike of them by users), it’s a feature that’s long overdue. We have details on how to adjust the auto play media settings in a separate article .

safari 11 auto play settings

Safari 11 allows users to stop auto-play videos in their tracks.

 alt=

The second feature is Intelligent Tracking Prevention. Tracking is used by third parties to aim their advertising at you. The most obvious example of this is when you buy something on the web—say, a salad spinner—and then when you visit other websites, you see salad spinner ads all over the place. ITP prevents this tracking from happening, so you’re no longer creeped out when you’re on the web after shopping. This is another great feature, and you can use our step-by-step instructions to properly activate it.

Safari has a bunch of other cool features, like an always-on Reader mode , persistent page zoom, notification controls, and improved performance.

Excited about the Safari 11 features? You don’t need to upgrade to High Sierra to get them. Safari 11 is also available for macOS Sierra; you can install it by performing a software update. If you want to wait to upgrade to High Sierra, you can still get Safari 11.

macOS High Sierra: Photos

Macworld’s Mac 911 column fields support questions from you, the reader. About 20 percent of the questions we get are about Apple’s Photos app—sometimes it’s a lot more when a new version is released. So I think it’s fair to say that Photos is popular, but people wish it were easier to use.

Photos is the one app in High Sierra that gets the most changes. It has tweaks to the sidebar and toolbar, drag-and-drop organization, imports history, improved accuracy with the People album, and more. The Edit mode is redesigned with better access to tools, Live Photo support, and there are also new filters. Photos also has new Project Extensions, so you can use third-party services to create websites, books, and other goods.

The changes and new features in Photos are too numerous to go into any great detail in this review. Instead, we’ve  dedicate a whole article to the new Photos. Learn more about Photos 3 and its changes and new features .

photos projects

Photos’ Project Extensions allow you to create photo books, cards, mounted pictures, and more directly in the Photos app.

macOS High Sierra: Siri

Siri made its debut in macOS Sierra . I don’t find myself using Siri nearly as much as I do on my iPhone; that’s just the nature of how mobile devices are used versus laptops and desktop computers.

In High Sierra, Apple has improved Siri by making it sound less robotic and more like natural human-speak. It’s a very noticeable change to me, and I guess there are folks who appreciate it. But Siri’s robotic expression never bothered me, and I really don’t think this is a big deal. I have never once thought, “You know, I’d use Siri more if it sounded more like a person.” Below is a sample of how Siri now sounds.

What prevents me from using Siri more is that I consistently have a hard time trying to get Siri to understand me. To this day. I still can’t get Siri to regularly understand me saying, “Send a text to my wife.” (And I have to use “my wife” because Siri always misunderstands my wife’s last name, and I have multiple contacts with the same first name.) I know I have a terrible voice, and my enunciation needs work (I’ve been told this for years by various professionals), but even if I try my hardest, Siri misunderstands me more often than anyone would like. Since this issue for me hasn’t gotten better, I have to believe that Siri has reached peak comprehension, so I need to change. And I’ve tried, but the only real change I’ll probably make is to not use Siri.

I’m not saying you shouldn’t use Siri on a Mac. There are big fans of Siri and it works well for them. You’re lucky. You’ll be able to take advantage of Siri’s new integration with Apple Music. Say, “Play some music” and Siri will play songs, and if you want to skip a song, you can say, “Play next” and Siri will play the next song. You can even tell Siri to play specific genres or artist, and even ask for some background information, like “When was this song released?” Have fun with that.

macOS High Sierra: Other changes

  • The Top Hits feature in Mail displays how much you’ve read an email, past searches, and a message’s relevance to VIP or Favorite contacts to make it easier to find what you need.
  • Spotlight search now can provide flight status.
  • The iCloud setting in System Preferences has been redesigned so you can manage your Family Sharing.
  • MacBook Pro users will find TouchBar improvements.
  • The Notes app now has support for tables and pinned notes.

spotlight flight info

Spotlight in macOS High Sierra can access flight information, so you don’t have to bother with Safari and going to your carrier’s website.

 alt=

Bottom line

macOS High Sierra may not be chock full of juicy new features you can’t wait to use, but that’s OK. What’s more important here is that Apple is setting up the Mac for the future, with APFS, Metal 2 and virtual reality, HEVC and HEIF, and more. If you want to put off upgrading until the first or second major update, that would probably be fine, though consider that upgrading now will install important security updates. Regardless of how you view the new features, the future of macOS looks bright. You’ll need to your Mac to be up to speed to take advantage of it all.

macOS Big Sur Safari

Apple has released the latest version of its Safari browser for macOS Catalina and High Sierra, ahead of the release of Big Sur later this year. Safari 14 improves the browser’s tabs, adds a new privacy report feature, and offers new customization options for your start page. You can download it by heading to System Preferences app and clicking “Software Update.”

One of the key improvements that’s coming with the latest version of Safari is improved tab management . The tabs themselves have been redesigned to be more space-efficient, display website favicons by default, and show a preview of each tab while hovering your mouse over them. There’s a new start page which you can customize with your own backgrounds and links, and a Privacy Report that highlights any cross-site trackers that the browser is blocking. Oh, and this version of the browser also removes support for Adobe Flash.

Tab management, baby

Some new Safari features will require macOS Big Sur to run, and aren’t available if you’re updating Safari on an older version of the operating system, 9to5Mac reports . These include support for 4K HDR video, and the browser’s built-in translation feature.

Yesterday saw the release of a swathe of Apple operating system updates , including iOS 14 for iPhones, iPadOS 14 for iPads, tvOS 14 for the Apple TV, and watchOS 7 for Apple Watches. You’ve still got a little longer to wait to update your Mac, but at least you can grab the new browser now.

foscam-logo

Thankfully, I stumbled upon a post in the Foscam forums that provided a working version of the plugin. I took the liberty of uploading to my blog as well, you can  download it from here (here you can find an older version) .

UPDATE for macOS High Sierra

The plugin still works with macOS High Sierra, but I found a newer version that works with more cameras, including the FI9851P V3 which I recently purchased.

UPDATE for Safari 12 and macOS Mojave

Foscam has published a new, different kind of plugin that works with Safari 12 and macOS Mojave. Newer firmwares for newer cameras link to this plugin (my FI9900EP does, for example) when trying to access their web UI from Safari. Their SSL certificate is broken but other than that the plugin installs and works just fine. Again, I’m mirroring the installer here for posterity.

Alternative solution for Safari 12 and macOS Mojave

Foscam’s VMS app works fine, is a native Mac app and seems to have most of the features the web UI had (for example PTZ controls on my FI9828P V2 seem to be missing/not functional, I’ll have to investigate further on that).

  • Install the app
  • Login as admin with no password
  • Add your cameras

I took the liberty to mirror the app here on my blog , in case it should no longer be available from Foscam in the future.

Thank you very much… that did the trick!

Very nice, thank you! Solved my problem. 🙂

Thanks a lot, it fixed my problem!

Thank you, really appreciate it! Helped right away. Did not work with regular plugins. Thanks!

Thank YOU Luca! Solved my problem too!

Thank you Thank you, yes that certainly did the trick! I have been spending hours trying to track the proper plugin! I hate doing upgrades, it takes forever to get it smoothed out. However I am back in the saddle again. Thanks again

Thank you saved the day!

This is fantastic… I don’t know how you managed to find it, since I’ve spent so much time searching around the horribly convoluted and mis-represented multiple “foscam” websites / support forums. I found nothing but old plugins and a promise from a couple years ago to update the software to work better with multiple browsers including Chrome which is also broken and still not working. I was just about to give up on the Foscam cameras we have and find a new brand to start over with. Still plan to do that soon, but at least now my cameras are visible again!

Firmware is another issue for another time.

I spent easily 2 hours last night trying to get Safari working again with my Foscam to the point I almost bought software. I don’t know why Foscam doesn’t have this posted on their site!

It didn’t work for me. Do you have to uninstall the old plugin? if so, how?

I think I did uninstall the old version before installing the new one, you can find it in /Library/Internet Plug-Ins: it’s the bundle named fsIPCamReg.bundle. Quit Safari, delete it, and you’re all set.

Big help Thanks for your time. Worked for me after several attempts with the old plugin I could not find anymore?

Thank you! Worked perfectly! I have tried many, many, many things and had resorted to using an old computer that wasn’t yet upgraded. Maybe you should submit to Foscam and have them get it on their site somewhere!

Thank you, thank you, that did it!

thanks very much looking for this plugin for hours none of them is working.

Thanks a lot – I spent hours on this until I found your post!

Danke….

Thanks, worked great!! Do you have a plug-in for Chrome also?

I’m sorry but I don’t 🙁

Just spent over 24 hours going round in circles, deleting and reloading he plugin, failed every time. Yours worked, just like that, magic! Life saver! Thanks

thank you so much…

Many thanks

After upgrading to Sierra 10.12.4 some of my Foscam cameras are again requesting plug-ins installed. Tried re-installing the plug-in you provided (thanks!) but still no connection. Any ideas please?

It still works for me, even after 10.12.4 🤔

Idem for me, one of my old camera work but FI9900 don’t work

Hi. I’m not having any luck. The Foscam software eventually times out on “loading”. Using Sierra 10.12.4. Have deleted old plug ins and installed the ones recommended above. Third party software accesses the cameras (a C1 and R2) perfectly, just can’t log into the cameras web software.

This fixed my issue as well, thank you very much!

How is this suppose to work? As I unzip the downloaded file, it contains an exe file. How can I install this on a Mac?

If you download this zip file and the unzip it, you will find a .pkg inside it. Just close Safari, open the .pkg and install it, then reopen Safari.

Muchas gracias me ha sido de mucha utilidad ya puedo acceder a las cámaras.

saludos desde Barcelona Jordi

Hi, I have a Foscam R2 and when I try to use the foscam software it just times out. Im using Sierra 10.12.4 with Safari 10.1. It works on my laptop but that is running El Capitan 10.11.6 with safari 10.0.3, I have tried the plugins form this page. But still does not work. Any help would be great..Thanks

I have the same issue, did you find a solution in the meantime?

For anyone having issues getting this to work, make sure you manually refresh your window. This may then force the certificate challenge window which allows you to “continue” and log in. Hope that makes sense.

I was having lots of problems with my FI9821W V2 using Mac Sierra 10.12.5. Finally emailed Foscam; they told me to download the driver that is up now, 3.3.0.32.

That seemed to take care of my problems. Camera works fine now.

I have struggled with this darn plug-in issue for a while. Tried many of the various recommended solutions and none worked. This worked like a charm though.

Thanks a lot!

Thank you very much, I solved my problem with the plugin you linked above. Now my foscam works fine.

With the plugin upgrade, I can now see the video, but if I select the Settings tab it just hangs on “Loading…” so I cannot upgrade the firmware with the important security fix.

After using plug in I cannot see video nor can I do anything in the settings. As Frank above wrote, my setting panel just hangs.

Try with this newer version of the plugin .

Hi, I downloaded the plug in, where is it saved on my computer? I can’t find it

It should be in your downloads folder, you just need to install it bi double clicking on it, then restart Safari.

strange. for me using your plugin or the one from foscam downloads. it runs the installation process. but no fsIPCamReg.bundle appears? im loosing the will to live with these R2 Cameras now

Thanks for the help! I am however having an issue when I log in, there is no video, its just black. I have verified that the video feed is good on 2 other devices, iPhone and PC. Any ideas?

I am having same issue with foscam NVR. It uses different plugin named fsnvrPlugin.bundle

Does anyone know where I can get that file?

Great Thanks

Top!! Klasse, geht mit Mac OS High Sierra!!!!! Vielen Dank!!

Thanks for this – seems to work well with 10.13.2. Happy New Year!

I have an Ambient HD3 weathercam that I had installed on my Mac. I recently tried to access the camera but was unable to. When I get to the login page, it says the plugins are not installed. They were before and everything was working. When I attempt to re-download the plugins it says my security settings won’t open from an unidentified developer. If I go to my security settings it only gives me the option to open from the App store, or the App store and identified developers. There is an option to open plugins anyway. When I do that it runs the installation successfully. However, when I go back to login, it still says that the plugins are not installed.

Danke schön!

Worked flawlessly on High Sierra 10.13.4 and the latest Safari 11.1

Thanks Luca, much appreciated!

Ciao, another Luca 😉

broken on Safari 12, MacOS Mojave beta

BTW, if anyone finds that their Foscam page just hangs on login, once you’ve clicked ‘Login’, start scrolling with your mouse (or swiping down with 2 fingers on the trackpad) and just keep scrolling and the page should load. This trick seems to work for me whenever the Foscam pages hang!

Any ideas about Mohave ?

Not yet, I’ve yet to look for a solution for Mojave.

Hi. Thank you, because it’s true that with Mojave it’s broken. I’m looking for a solution since couple of weeks without success….

Myfoscam.com just stopped working for me a couple of days ago. The error is “Please click me to install plugin(Now we don’t support IE(64))”. The link downloads an exe file which is useless for me because I’m running Safari 11.1.2 on macOS High Sierra 10.13.6. Any idea how to fix this? I tried deleting the bundle and installing the 3.3.0.32 plugin but it still does not work.

I have a Foscam F19828W PTZ camera wired. I see the camera on the equipment search tool but when I try to load it with a double click it tells me Plug in not found . I downloaded the Patch you posted but as soon as I hit the search tool it goes to Safari and camera page and the message is still on the log in page. ? I am running Mac OS High Seirra 10.13.6. stumped as to what to try next and how do I stop Safari from loading as soon as I double click on the equipment Search tool. I can find it with VMS software but that is limited capability JUST STUMPED hope you can help . I did get it to show me the camera a couple of times.

Hi Ralph, I don’t understand what you need the equipment search tool for. If you go to the camera’s IP address in Safari does it work?

The latest Safari now blocks 3rd party plugins which are not approved by Apple.

I updated the post with an alternative solution, using Foscam’s VMS Mac app.

VMS is very buggy on Mojave 10.14.1. The latest version I could find is V0.3.1 (65) from 2015 !! Is there any hope it will be updated? Or is Foscam just not interested in the mac market and I should just accept thqt?

Safari came out today with a new Version 12.0 (13606.2.11). And now it’s telling me Plugins are not allowed click to download. I did so and it still giving me the same message.

Anybody know of a workaround for the 3rd party plugin Safari bock? I cant even get Chrome to work now on OSX…

I’m having the same problem.

Tried the VMS app and got it linked to my cameras via my ddns. Doesn’t seem to be the capability to set zones for motion alarm, or I can’t locate it. Anyone know where it is?

In addition, this viewer lacks access to most of the other settings that were accessible via Safari, e.g. mail settings for sending alarm alerts, ddns settings, basically all the stuff that makes these cameras usable for security — the current settings cannot be changed from this point forward without access to the camera GUI. The various iphone apps also have incomplete settings access, although better than this viewer. This all constitutes a real problem, substantially reducing the usability of Foscam HD cameras. So far, Foscam technical support has only directed me to outdated OS Sierra plug-ins from September 2016 and info on how to open third party downloads in the OS security settings (which isn’t the problem in the first place).

Right click on the camera name in the device list on the right hand side of the screen. They are all there 🙂

The user creation / maintenance settings are not available.

There is a firmware upgrade for R2 cameras (1.11.1.13_2.71.1.64) that can be upgraded via the Foscam phone app. Once this upgrade is installed, if you then try to log in to the camera with Safari, you will again see the “download plugins” message/link. Click the link and install the package, after which you will no longer see any such messages, and you will be able to log in with Safari, and control/manage the camera as usual.

I received the tip about the firmware upgrade from [email protected] . I went ahead and tried it on one of my R2E cameras and it worked fine.

Thank you, the same link was available on my FI9900EP on the latest firmware! I’m updating this post right now.

Hello! I updated my foscam cam to the last firmware and now I can access to it using Safari but I noticed that “Playback tab” is missing. Do you have any suggestion? Thank you, Stefano

Same here, actually. Maybe Foscam’s VMS app can still do that for you?

Not only Playback missing, but several menus are not working in configuration page anymore. For example : – I can’t set the Motion Detection zones – I can’t upload a firmware file directly(no Upload/Browse button available, I have to put the file in a specific directly on disk)

But the main problem is the missing playback page. And I don’t see any Playback option in FoscamVMS.

Regards, Mike

thanks for your helpings with these stupid foscam plugins. I have two ptz cams (FI9828P V2 and FI9831W) and a stable cam (FI9805W). The new plugin doesn’t work for all of them. Yes I know, you wrote, it is for newer models.

My problem with the FI9828P V2 and the VMS app is, that it doesn’t have a possibility to adjust the focus of the cam. Just the zoom but not the focus. Is there another way to adjust it with my Mac?

If you zoom out all the way (or in) and keep going, it should autofocus once again.

Yeah, that’s the normal way but autofocus from my cam doesn’t work right. After zooming it’s not sharp and I have to manual adjust the focus.

Thanks for the VMS tip, works fine for me on Mojave.

VMS works for me thanks for that link but most the options I need don’t work in VMS so I have to get my Safari plug in working. IT looks like there is no way to install the plugin in Chrome or Firefox for mac either. I’m stuck using parallels to open the foscam web page in IE via a VM.

I’m using Mojove with the newest safari.

Hi Miked, what options do you need? Have you tried right-clicking on the video image and going into the settings? I haven’t found anything missing to be honest, including DDNS, colour adjustment, motion area setting. All there. Happy days again

I think he believes to acces the memory card on the cam… -neither can I As it is now, it saves recordings on computer.

Hi Luca, I still have problems with my Foscam FI9805W When I try to open the IP Camera Tool app, I got the message “Plugins are not found. Click me to download” I tried to download plugin 3.3.0.32.pkg (and many others) but nothing works. I am using Safari 12.0 and MacOS 10.13 High Siera Do I have to uninstall plugins and when so, which ones Please advise what to do. I am a bit desperate!

Foscam VMS is barely usable: all video are recorder in this .vms format, that you can’t read on anything else but FoscamVMS… making it useless for any kind of security purpose. Plus, you can’t change the recording path… it’s blocked. As the plugs in will not work anymore with the latest safari, I’m gonna advise everybody, including all my clients, to move from Foscam to another brand. As my boss found out this situation, he decided to remove all foscam cameras we got on site… and back to D-Link system. They’re a little more expensive, but we’ll never have to worry about updates again.

I have the Foscam C1 and ran the installer for the new “plug-in” but it doesn’t seem to work on Safari 12. As I understand it, Safari 12.0 completely eliminates plug-ins and extensions…all for your “security”. It’s so secure we can’t even view our own security cameras! Thanks, Apple!

I can use Foscam VMS, however without the web access I cannot figure out how to access the camera’s configuration to make changes.

Agree with the previous poster; need to just ditch this camera and go with one that has proper support.

Well…. any WiFi with PTZ cameras @ 1080p that looks nice and have proper browser support, all for around 120eur ? ….

this Foscam in conjunction with Apple and Safari is sooo bullshit. It does not work …. Don’t buy the Foscam Shit!

I could find no way to access the original web interface of my Foscam FI9821W 2.1 on MacOS High Sierra or Mojave (Safari was supposed to be the only working browser, but not for me).

The only way I could access the camera at this time is by doing the following *on a Win10 machine* (the firmware upload might work from Mac OS): – Reset the camera to factory settings (I had a nonstandard username and a long password and it messed with the upgrade tool) by pressing the reset button for 5 seconds – With the standard username and password (“admin”/””) upgrade the camera firmware and web app to the latest version using the IP Camera Tool – Use Internet Explorer (yeah, I know) to load the IP camera’s web interface, click the link and install the plugins – Restart IE and use it to successfully access the web interface

I’m only using this procedure to configure the camera, such as setting usernames, passwords and motion detection settings. After configuring the camera, I have set it up with Synology’s Surveillance Station 8 (it’s much more conveniente, and works fine).

Hi, i have the same problem with foscam plugin but, i’ve make a solution… if you want, send me model number and macos version and i can send you a promotional code for download for free “IPCam Viewer for MacOS”. But i ask you to send me feedback if my App works fine or not.

Hi Roberto,

I have (1) r4 (1) z2 (2) fi9826

I am ready to try your app as nothing else works well and foscam has become way more trouble than they are worth. If only I knew before I bought them …

I forgot my email isn’t posted. Send to [email protected]

I have a these Foscam models I can try your app with:

FI9805W FI9828P V2 FI9831W

If you’d like, you can send me a redeem code at [email protected]

Not working on Safari 12 and moJave.

I have multiple Foscam cameras,

This particular camera FI9821P V2 is already on the latest 2.21.2.31_p1 firmware

I need the advanced settings which is only available from the browser

I am running Mojave with Safari 12.01. I have tried all the available plugins I can find and though the packages claim they are installed, nothing works. I have looked in the library and there are no internet plugins at all. There is also no place in Safari “website” tab under preferences to “allow plug-ins”. Is there a way to get around this? This has gotten way more than frustrating!

Same for me Pat. I am on Mojave 10.14.2 I have tried all the solutions provided here. The Mojave plugin Luca mirrored, or the newest on Foscams website, it is all not working. I took out fsIPCamReg.bundle from library/internet Plug-Ins and saw that all those installers do not install anything in here. Changing location for the installation on my external disk, it installed those two files

FosIPCCore FosIPCCoreManager

(no extension, system says they are exectutable unix files) and it created a “usr” folder on that drive and stored those unix files inside it in “local/bin” folder. I tried moving those files into library internet plugin folder, but to no effect. My camera login page still expects a plugin to be installed and does not log in to the camera.

I would be fine with FoscamVMS software, if it would be working properly. It does show the feed and basic controls, but “Setting” brings up an empty black window, so I am still not able to do any settings on the cameras.

The plugins don’t work in Mojave with Safari 12.0.1, I try use the FoscamVMS the app running and detect the cameras, but when try to connect gave timeout error.

I installed in macOS High Sierra and the FoscamVMS works and the Safari plugin 3.3.0.32 too.

At moment look there is not any tool for Mojave

This is for MacOS Mojave, running latest Safari and for camera Foscam R2C. Tried everything and didn’t work until:

Downloaded the latest firmware and plugins from Foscom site: https://www.foscam.com/downloads/app_software.html

Install plugin. Using Equipment Search Tool, right-click to Upgrade Firmware to latest. And then restarting Safari. Voila! Safari plugin works and am able to get to the camera settings finally.

Hope this helps

Just to build on this a little. to access the camera, you have to double click the IP address found by the search tool. The https link will show you a login but it will continue to timeout on you. The link from the search tool will drop the https.

Nice trick but doesn‘t work for FI9805W, FI9831W or FI9828P V2. Safari is still missing the plugin and giving me a timeout. Newest firmware patch (V-2.x.1.120_p4 for FI9805W and FI9831W, V-2.x.1.133_p2 for FI9828P V2) is installed on the cams. Also newest safari and the plugin from the firmware page.

Ok…I hate hate firmware upgrades on FOSCAM. Anyways, I am confused since the page has so many. I have a FOSCAM 9821P V2. 1.5.2.11_2.21.1.143. I have not done an update because I believe I have to plug it in to the router to do the update. Can anyone help. What should I do. I did install the equipment search tool but it asks for the firmware file. I don’t want to brick this.

Here is firmware page. None of this makes sense based on the firmware version I have. https://www.foscam.com/downloads/firmware_details.html?id=43

Thanks man!!

Works perfect for my foscam cameras.

Do you know if there is any similar plugin for the Foscam NVR 3109H?, it uses a different plugin software

Hi Everyone!… I can make it work with Safari Version 13.0.4

I have three C1-V3 and they all work with Safari, my 9831 and 9805 do not

Hi, having the same problem with my FI9828P V2 but I’m using Safari V14 (Catalina). Where oddly enough their web ui is working fine with my FI9900P. Do you think this will work for me ? Thanks, Jeff

Hi Jeff, unfortunately I am noticing the same thing. In addition to the FI9282P V2, I’m also experiencing the same issue with an older FI9805W. I am almost embarrassed to admit that I have a Windows 7 VM that I spin up whenever I need to change any settings on the camera (with Internet Explorer 🙄).
