A specialty of the city of Bursa, İskender kebap is named after a butcher called İskender Efendi, who first prepared this flavorful dish. It consists of thinly sliced lamb that is grilled and combined with a spicy tomato sauce and pita bread, while melted sheep butter and yogurt are traditionally drizzled over the dish at the table. It is recommended to pair this kebap with şıra , a Turkish beverage that is known to aid digestion.

Solomillo al whisky is a traditional Spanish dish originating from Seville. The dish consists of pork tenderloin in a garlicky whisky sauce and it's made with a combination of medallions of pork tenderloin, flour, lemon juice, garlic, whisky, olive oil, stock, and often potatoes. The meat is browned, then removed from the pan so that the sauce can be prepared. When the sauce has reduced, the meat is added back to the pan until warm. It's recommeneded to serve solomillo al whisky with potatoes or bread to mop up the juices. This classic dish is a staple of Seville's tapas bars.

Smacked cucumber is a traditional Asian dish that’s especially popular in Tibet as a snack for picnicking. The dish is usually made with a combination of cucumbers, garlic, sesame oil, black vinegar, and soy sauce. The cucumber is peeled and smacked with a rolling pin so that it’s bruised and starting to break apart. It’s sliced into chunks and mixed with the rest of the ingredients. The ingredients are tossed well and then served on a large plate. The cucumber is smacked because it will absorb the flavors of garlic, oil, vinegar, and soy sauce even better and it will have a more intense flavor.

Supă de pui cu tăieței is a Romanian variation of the chicken soup with the addition of homemade noodles. A classic winter dish, this clear soup is usually made with chicken stock, noodles, and vegetables (typically carrots). The chicken meat used for making the stock can be reserved for other dishes or shredded and added to the soup for a more filling meal. In many Romanian households, this soup is traditionally eaten on Sundays, for lunch or dinner. Considered a comfort food, the soup is usually eaten hot, garnished with chopped parsley and ground black pepper.

Limniona is a red Greek grape native to Thessaly. Although it is still rare, it is slowly becoming one of the trendiest Greek wines. The grape is used in the production of dry red wines. It was mainly used as a blending grape throughout history, and its monovarietal potential has only recently been promoted. Limniona-based wines are easy-drinking, smooth, and elegant. The aroma is reminiscent of dark berries, pomegranate, and maraschino cherries, often accompanied by herbal notes. These wines will typically have high acidity and mineral backbone, while the tannins are firm but without being aggressive. This wine would pair well with charcuterie, red meat, lamb, pork, and tomato-based dishes. Limniona was saved from extinction by Christos Zafeirakis, a local winemaker who brought the variety back to the spotlight and continues to work on its promotion. He bottled his first varietal Limniona in 2007.

Rougail saucisses is a traditional dish originating from Réunion, an island that's an overseas region of France. The dish is usually made with a combination of sausages (fresh or smoked), onions, olive oil, hot peppers, tomatoes, and salt. The sausages are blanched in boiling water for a few minutes, rinsed, and then sautéed in olive oil. The onions are sliced and added to the pot, and the hot peppers are seeded, chopped, and mashed with salt before they're also added to the pot. Once the onions become golden brown, diced tomatoes are mixed in, and the dish is cooked over low heat until the sauce thickens.

What to Eat and Drink After Skiing, Country by Country
Espetos is a Spanish tradition of grilling sardines, dating back to the late 19th century, when fishermen skewered and grilled surplus fish in small boats on the sand. The modern method usually involves placing 6 sardines on a skewer, seasoning them with sea salt, then grilling them over the open flames of an olive wood fire. Once the sardines are fully cooked and become golden on the outside, they are drizzled with olive oil and lemon juice. It's said that the sardines are best from May to August, when they are a bit fattier, which increases their great flavor. In many beach bars of Malaga, espetos are paired with soft drinks, beer, sangria, or Tinto de verano red wine.

Rostit de festa major is a traditional Catalan chicken dish that's made for holidays and festivities. The version from Empordà is usually made with a combination of chicken, onions, garlic, cinnamon, bay leaves, cognac, lard, olive oil, salt, and pepper. The chicken is cut into pieces, browned in lard and oil, and mixed with the onions, garlic, cinnamon, bay leaves, and seasonings. Cognac is poured over the chicken pieces and the dish is roasted for more than an hour while occasionally being basted with the pan juices. Before serving, the dish is also moistened with pan juices. Once done, rostit de festa major is typically accompanied by roasted potatoes and a fresh salad on the side.

Chocolate soufflé is an exquisite French dessert that combines dark chocolate with a creamy egg yolk base and fluffy egg whites. Typically prepared in small ramekins, it should always be lightly baked in order to stay soft and velvety in the middle, with a delectable, crunchy top. Just like other soufflé varieties, the chocolate version is also considered to be technically challenging, but if done properly, it results in a wonderfully delicate sweet treat. Even though it is not considered to be one of the first soufflé versions, which were originally prepared as savory dishes, today it is one of the most popular interpretations of this internationally acclaimed dessert.

Described as a simple, paprika-spiced cheese spread, liptauer is one of the classic dishes that usually consists of different type of fresh or cream cheeses, blended with ground paprika and a variety of fresh herbs and spices. Even though there has been a long dispute over the true origin of this classic Central European spread, its name certainly derives from the German term used for the Slovak Liptov region. Due to its presence in traditional Hungarian and Austrian cuisine, it is believed to have been created during the period of Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Today, it appears in numerous variations throughout many European countries, and it is usually enjoyed as a dip, a spread, or a creamy, spicy accompaniment to grilled meat.

Frankfurter pudding is a traditional German pudding originating from Frankfurt, and although there are many versions of hot steamed chocolate pudding throughout the country, this one is considered to be one of the best and richest. It's usually made with a combination of breadcrumbs, egg yolks, egg whites, butter, sugar, grated almonds, chocolate, and rum or strong coffee. The butter is creamed with sugar until light and fluffy. Egg yolks are blended into the mixture along with melted chocolate, rum or coffee, almonds, and breadcrumbs. The egg whites are beaten until stiff and then folded into the mixture. It's placed into a buttered mold and steamed in a water bath until the pudding is set. After a few minutes, the chocolate pudding is inverted on a serving platter. The pudding is typically served with warm vanilla sauce.

Atlas Buckhead
- Not to be outdone by the Henri Matisse piece hanging on the wall, chef Freddy Money approaches each dish with the discerning eye of a sculptor.
- As you’re nibbling, you can see the culinary team in motion in your peripheral through the open kitchen. If you can score a table somewhere between said kitchen and the sometimes-animated bar, that’s your sweet spot.
- The initial space feels like a gentleman’s club that has long given up its stuffy ways — this is your introduction to The Tavern at Atlas, unveiled in early 2017. Consider this section as Atlas’ more easygoing side, where you can nibble on sliders, sip on gin martinis and listen to live music every Wednesday and Friday night.
- Proceed a bit farther into the restaurant and you’ll run into a stylish bar that almost glows from the polished countertops and moody lights behind the bottles.
- Walk past the glass case of vintage liquors and things open up into a dining room full of brown leather chairs, booths covered in rich green fabrics and a museum-worthy collection of art from names like Pablo Picasso and Francis Bacon.
- Nibble on bar bites and sip signature cocktails at The Tavern starting at 4 p.m. every day. Atlas serves dinner Sunday through Thursday from 5:30 until 10 p.m., while you can dine until 10:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights.
- The Tavern is certainly more casual than the rest of Atlas, but you still will want to look your best. Nice jeans and a blouse or button down would be appropriate here, while in the dining room, you’ll be more comfortable in something a little more dressed up.
- Instead of the black angus filet being ruined with too many accoutrements, it only needs crème fraîche potato puree and charred spring onions to do the talking.
- The same goes for the Atlas burger, a dry-aged and wagyu treat that says it all simply and splendidly with aged cheese and Vidalia onions.
- The most over-the-top moment at dinner might be the times when the server tempts your table with three or four varieties of fresh bread.
- A glass case of vintage liquors behind the glass bar is impressive — Macallan, various cognacs in blown-glass bottles, it’s all here.
- Vino lovers will appreciate a wine list with pours from as close as New York and as distant as Portugal.
- Still, it’s with the cocktails that the art-appreciating establishment truly shows off its creative side. You’ll find your traditional concoctions, sure, but allow the waiter to tell you about a yet-unnamed drink made with port, ginger beer and house-made bitters.

In one of Provence’s most enchanted towns, St Paul de Vence, there is a charming stone hotel with a restaurant, La Colombe d’Or, that is more a museum than anything else. On the walls are paintings and drawings by the artists who lived and worked in southern France. Picasso, Matisse, Braque, Léger—they’re all there. It’s a place of great luxury and comfort, but it doesn’t feel stuffy or overbearing. For a few quietly thrilling hours, you can be in your own private museum .
Atlas, in the St. Regis Atlanta in Buckhead, provides the same frisson. That head painted in oil, hung against lacquered wood-paneled walls, doesn’t just look like a Francis Bacon or a Lucian Freud—it is a Bacon or a Freud. That’s a Soutine oil behind the check stand. And van Gogh and Picasso and Chagall and Léger and Braque and Foujita and more, in two bays of the dining room, cozily massed with paintings and drawings by many of the past century’s leading artists—intimate works from the private collection of Joe Lewis, founder of Tavistock, which owns the St. Regis.
The chance to dine like modern royalty—waited on by attractive servers who manage to be attentive, alert, and friendly without being fawning—is a kind of gift to the city, the first luxurious hotel dining room since the Dining Room at the Ritz-Carlton, Buckhead fell victim to a crumbling economy in 2009.
It’s not just the art that makes Atlas seem so extravagant; it’s the entire space. From the moment you open the wooden door with a big central brass knob, you enter a world of what Matisse might call luxe , calme , et volupté . Art books line shelves and cover coffee tables beside overstuffed sofas and chairs in an entryway bar room. Beneath a vaulted ceiling, arched mullioned windows and French doors open onto a courtyard with boxed hedges and flowers that make you think for a moment you might really be in Provence. The overall feel is so calming, the view through those high windows so bright and protected, that each time we were seated I felt we were on an indulgent vacation.
Why ask for the moon when we have the stars? That is: How’s the food? Fine. It’s nothing as memorable as the room and the service, or for that matter the long wine list. It’s also not the national innovation incubator that Guenter Seeger’s Ritz-Carlton was in its heyday. When dining at Atlas and speaking afterward with Christopher Grossman, the chef, I was completely convinced of the quality of the ingredients. Just as spring was underway, I admired the ivory and white of winter vegetables giving way to the yellow-green of new peas, fresh favas, and spring onions. Plates are prettily arranged; it’s a very good place to eat with your eyes. But with your palate? Not so much. Hard as I tried, and I tried hard, I couldn’t find much flavor in many of the artful plates. The first night I went, I had a cold, so assumed that the muted flavors simply reflected my blunted senses. Weeks later, I tried nearly every dish again and realized my cold hadn’t been so bad after all. However immaculately prepared and sensitively seasonal the ingredients, they didn’t seem fused by any guiding imagination. It’s hard to detect a vision or identity to the cuisine beyond opulence, which Atlas does very well. Like the servers, the cuisine speaks in a low voice and is very polite. But perfect manners don’t make for soulful food.
They do make for very agreeable, and of course expensive, food. Grossman—who trained at Aria under Atlas’s consulting chef, Gerry Klaskala, and speaks of him as his mentor—cooks with effortless expertise. (After Aria, Grossman worked at the French Laundry.) A technically impressive main dish like perfectly tender slices of New Zealand venison tenderloin, accompanied by plum cherry puree and barley porridge with black truffle, was sophisticated and well-executed. But the cherries were neither particularly sweet nor sour from pickling, and the barley lacked the salt and chewiness to make it register.
Two fish dishes were even more mysteriously fugitive in memory: sole with “spring succotash” and lobster nage, the pink sauce faintly buttery but so lightly lobster-flavored you’d never guess unless someone told you. The vegetables were distinguishable in the mouth only by texture. Halibut, a dense and snowywinter fish, was as meaty as it should be, but the acidic orange sauce and pine nuts with garbanzos seemed both under-flavored and miscalculated; nothing came together, and, even on a post-cold tasting, nothing stuck in my memory except for the sauce.
A few dishes showed signs of personality. Potato pierogi dumplings, for example. On the menu, they appeared out of place beside the more expected fare, such as standard-issue butter-poached (bland) lobster with peas and asparagus, and (particularly flavorless) lightly cured yellowtail hiramasa. But the pierogi were chewy little flavor packages that, combined with marvelously braised beef cheeks, were probably the most satisfying dish on the menu.
The most expensive main course ($59), a ribeye that is aged for 35 days, was another dish with character, thanks to the accompanying poached egg over spinach with Mornay sauce and home fries. Grossman described it as a cross between what he might cook on a Sunday (the fries) and a vision of creamed spinach he suspects he conjured from a teenage visit to Vienna. Whatever the inspiration, his high-low comfort hybrid is a success. The beef is both tender and slightly gamey, unlike the stringy yet more expensive dry-aged steaks I’ve tried lately; the corned tongue he strews on the plate adds a hash-house down-hominess that cuts through the studied elegance of the other mains.
Best might have been the burger, at $25 the cheapest main course, impressive in its piece-by-piece reconstruction (ground wagyu and dry-age trim, “American” cheese made of Gouda and sharp cheddar).
Salads were perkily fresh, particularly one of crunchy sunflower sprouts and pea shoots with buttermilk ricotta. A spring onion soup looked as creamy as the sieved potato-chicken stock velouté of a real vichyssoise but was nothing more, the chef swore, than a few Vidalia onions, spring onions, and Jerusalem artichokes for body. It takes real sophistication to conceive and present a dish so elegant, seasonal, and simple. Desserts, by Judy Roman, are fairly elaborate and unexceptional, save for a passion fruit meringue with a sunny yellow, brightly acid passion fruit curd in the center—sweet, refreshing, marvelous.
Which is why the minute anyone from out of town asks to go somewhere for a special occasion, preferably with me as a guest, I’ll say “Atlas” like a shot. It won’t be for the food. But a place that makes you feel the way Atlas does doesn’t need transcendent food. Like the mostly vanished great hotel restaurants, Atlas makes you feel cared for, refreshed, and, for just a few hours, transported to a lovelier world.
Rating ★★★ (excellent)
Behind the Rating Does food that’s just “fine” warrant three stars? It does in a dining room as beautiful as Atlas’s.

How Atlas Restaurant Group CEO Alex Smith is expanding his hotel restaurant portfolio despite the COVID-19 travel slowdown
Joanna Fantozzi | Restaurant Hospitality
Atlas Restaurant Group — the Baltimore-based, 15-unit fine dining group with a focus on hotel restaurants — is moving forward with expansion plans despite the challenges of navigating the COVID-19 pandemic. The group, headed by CEO Alex Smith, plans to open five more restaurants in the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore areas by the first quarter of 2021, pending any changes in local dining room regulations and the status of the coronavirus vaccine.
The first soon-to-be-opened restaurant, Monarque Steakhouse in Baltimore, began construction in November 2019 and although it was slated to open in May, was put on hold due to the pandemic. If all goes well, Monarque —a French brasserie and dinner theater featuring live musicians, poets, and other performers — will be finally opening its doors in November, pending any futher delays due to the pandemic.
The other Baltimore restaurants in the wings include classic Maryland seafood house Watershed and Atlas Fish Market, a wholesale fish market with an attached oyster bar to serve the surrounding community that has a dearth of wholesale fresh seafood options, Smith said. Both are scheduled to open in March 2021, though that could change again due to the pandemic.
The restaurants coming to Washington, D.C. include the Parlour Victoria, a seafood/oyster parlor that is an “homage to a bygone era” and will have an “extensive library of whiskey and frequent live music” and international cocktail bar, the Spruce Goose, which will have spirits and liquors from all over the world. Currently, the restaurant group owns four restaurants in the Four Seasons, while both Washington, D.C. restaurants will open either in December or spring 2021 in the Marriot Moxy Hotel about one mile from the National Mall.
Although the upcoming project portfolio for Atlas is ambitious, plans for all five restaurants are dotted with question marks due to the stop and start nature of the ongoing crisis. For example, although Monarque (average entrée price $35 and 3,500 square feet) has announced that chef Marc Hennessy (previously at Rare Steakhouse and Del Campo in Washington, D.C.) will be on board as executive chef, the other restaurants don’t have menus set or executive chefs on board yet.
But despite the uncertainties, Smith strongly believes in investing in hotel restaurants even now with travel bans and vacation plans on hold for most Americans and believes that the business of hotel restaurants – even when not in the middle of a pandemic — is not specifically geared toward travelers.
“When we go into a market, we target the local clientele first,” Smith said. “You have to build your business around the locals. If you’re just surviving off of hotel guest traffic, you’re in trouble. We gear our marketing toward the local market and then supplement with business travelers.”
This is not to say that the past five months have not been challenging for Atlas Restaurant Group’s restaurants.
As many fine dining restaurants lean into COVID-era plans like offering takeout, meal kits, or private events to supplement their socially distanced dining rooms, Smith does not plan to go that route with either his new or already existing restaurants. Although most of his restaurants had to close and temporarily lay off more than a thousand employees, he said that Atlas-style fine dining can only be done in-person.
“You won’t be able to get our product to-go, so it is what it is,” Smith said. “We space people out and make the guest feel comfortable. You go above and beyond safety protocols and put out a quality product. […] We won’t reopen fully until it’s safe to have [that whole experience] again.”
Currently the restaurant group’s revenue is down by about 30-40%, although that has improved since it’s 50% drop last quarter. For their restaurants in states where they are allowed to have 50% occupancy like Ouzo Bay and Loch Bar in Houston, Texas, the company is doing about 85% of its normal revenue because they are seeing customers come in at all times of the day. Slower times are no longer slow, despite the occupancy restrictions because cautious customers might feel more comfortable dining at 4:00 or 9:00 pm.
Right now, all 14 restaurants are now open — though most have capacity limitations — and Smith plans to get back to what he calls “layered, experience-based dining” as soon as possible.
In each of the hotels that they’ve opened up in, Atlas Restaurants has created an “entertainment district” of multiple restaurants, bars and nightclubs. The Four Seasons in Baltimore, for example, has four different venues, each with a different vibe.
“Our restaurants are all about the experience,” Smith said. “You can’t get that eating out of a box sitting in front of your TV.”Atlas Restaurant Group — the Baltimore-based, 15-unit fine dining group with a focus on hotel restaurants — is moving forward with expansion plans despite the challenges of navigating the COVID-19 pandemic. The group, headed by CEO Alex Smith, plans to open five more restaurants in the Washington, D.C. and Baltimore areas by the first quarter of 2021, pending any changes in local dining room regulations and the status of the coronavirus vaccine.
“Our restaurants are all about the experience,” Smith said. “You can’t get that eating out of a box sitting in front of your TV.”
6 of the best seafood restaurants in Cape Cod and its islands
Cape Cod, Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket are renowned for their excellent seafood. Whether you’re after a buttery lobster roll or a steaming bowl of clam chowder, here's the best restaurants serving up these much-loved classics.
Salt air, a summer breeze and the sound of the Atlantic Ocean crashing onto a rocky shore. Summer on the coast of New England is an entire world unto itself, and the scene is incomplete without tucking into a creamy soft-shell crab sandwich. Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket are all renowned for their seafood restaurants, and the choices are varied and abundant — from high-end dining in historic New England cottages to dockside picnic tables overlooking the sea. Whether visitors choose to dine at traditional lobster shacks or modern oyster bars — it’s a guarantee that they will eat exceptionally well.
1. The Homeport Martha’s Vineyard
This Chilmark-area oyster bar first opened its doors in 1930 and has been serving the freshest and most delectable steamers (softshell clams), steamed mussels and stuffed quahog clams (a New England speciality) in the decades since. From the ‘raw bar’ menu guests can order The Jaws platter to share; the film was famously shot on the island. Set in the 300-year-old fishing village of Menemsha, The Homeport is known for its stunning sunsets, smoked bluefish pate and ‘lobster in the semi-rough’ — served on the waterside patio or beside a roaring fire in the indoor dining room. Guests are encouraged to ‘leave the shells but take the memories’.
2. The Sweet Life Martha’s Vineyard
Experience a taste of the sweet life in the scenic town of Oak Bluffs, famous for its colourful Victorian architecture, historic lighthouses and 19th-century gingerbread cottages. The Sweet Life is a favourite among visitors and residents alike. The restaurant works closely with island fishermen, and the food and drink menus frequently change to reflect what’s seasonal and available. The seafood pasta remains an evergreen classic, however, and every Wednesday is pasta night — the squid ink tagliatelle with local littleneck clams is a must-try, as is the octopus gnocchi.
3. Lobster Pot Cape Cod
In Cape Cod, the ocean plays an essential part in daily proceedings — both from a culinary and a leisure perspective. A day of clamming and sailing is best capped off with a Dark ’n’ Stormy cocktail and a dinner of freshly caught lobster. Lobster Pot is a beloved institution in the vibrant city of Provincetown, its neon sign having beckoned generations of visitors to its waterfront dining room since 1979. Peppered shrimp and sautéed squid are local favourites, but the main event is, of course, the lobster, which is served pan-roasted, baked, stuffed or boiled.
4. Fishermen’s View Cape Cod
There are few days as perfect as a New England summer, and there are even fewer meals as delectable as piping hot New England clam chowder. Even on a hot August afternoon, there’s always a chill in the air along the Massachusetts coast, and ‘chowda’ (as the locals call it) hits just the spot. The house clam chowder at Fishermen’s View , in the bayside town of Sandwich, is among the best on the Cape. The restaurant’s sea-to-table ethos extends beyond just the servings on your plate, as you will catch glimpses of boaters and sailors as they navigate the busy canal and surrounding marina — a fisherman’s view, indeed.
5. Brotherhood of Thieves Nantucket
Nantucket is an intoxicating blend of quaint New England charm set against a lively social backdrop — visitors arrive on the island as much for the scene as for the sea. Set on Broad Street in historic downtown Nantucket, Brotherhood of Thieves resembles an 1800s whaling tavern with a bustling bar and cosy, brick-lined interior. Enjoy the salty delights of the Atlantic with an inventive, modern twist — from lobster mac and cheese to tuna tostada and Nantucket sushi rolls (spicy scallops with tempura crunch). In the evening, the outdoor bar becomes a hub for island nightlife and post-dinner cocktails.
6. The Nantucket Lobster Trap Nantucket
To toast or not to toast? On Nantucket, that is the question — regarding your lobster roll, of course. The Nantucket Lobster Trap has sidestepped this eternal debate by offering both options. Luckily, whichever way you order it, in the parlance of locals, it’s sure to be ‘wicked good’. The laid-back seafood shack also serves additional New England summer classics, including haddock, Nantucket Bay scallops and steamed mussels. The best part? There’s a takeout window for visitors to pick up their seafood to enjoy back at home or on a nearby beach. In this instance, the world truly is your oyster.

The #1 restaurant in The Villages right now, according to diners—and see the rest of the 7 best
Posted: March 25, 2024 | Last updated: March 25, 2024
Highest-rated restaurants in The Villages by diners
Humans are creatures of habit. We tend to stick to our morning routines, rewatch movies we've seen time and time again, and hit up the same tried-and-true restaurants when going out for a meal. In fact, 35% of Americans said they rarely, if ever, try a new restaurant they haven't been to before, and 5% say they never do, according to a survey of more than 2,600 diners from TouchBistro.
But those numbers look quite different when you focus on younger generations—56% of Gen Zers and 47% of millennials in the U.S. say they visit new restaurants once a month or more. When it comes to deciding which new restaurant to try, younger generations are also more likely to rely on online reviews, through sites like Yelp or Google or from social media. The TouchBistro survey found that 71% of Gen Zers and 72% of millennials have opted to try a new restaurant solely because of favorable reviews online.
Some of the best restaurants in your neck of the woods might be those established spots that customers have been visiting for decades, but some may be brand new. More than 10,000 new restaurants opened in 2023 , up 5.7% from 2022, according to a report from BentoBox. The states that saw the most new restaurants open up in 2023 were Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina, and Pennsylvania, but new locales are popping up all over the U.S.
To help you determine which spots—both new and long-standing—to try out, Stacker compiled a list of the highest-rated restaurants in The Villages, according to Yelp reviews from diners as of January 2024. Only restaurants with at least 20 reviews were considered. Read on to find some inspiration for the next time you dine out.

The 4Cs of AAA Diamonds
Cleanliness: AAA hotel inspections include ATP surface testing, the same technology used to verify cleanliness in the healthcare and food service industries.
Comfort: Inspectors evaluate a property’s quality of experience, range of amenities, and level of hospitality.
Cuisine: Diamond restaurants are assessed on their food, service, and vibe. Inspectors dine at these properties anonymously.
Consistency: AAA Diamond properties – no matter the designation – have one thing in common: consistency. Unlike subjective star reviews, Diamond inspections rely on published guidelines based on industry standards.

Travel magazine highlights Florida barrier island. Here's what to know about Cabbage Key
It can be a mix of emotions when a beloved regional place gets a spotlight on it. Excitement for its well-deserved praise, yet you can't help the need to gatekeep something you feel so much fondness over.
However, everyone must be exposed to the tranquil magic of Southwest Florida's Cabbage Key , with travel magazine Travel + Leisure recently highlighting the local gem to its audience.
"It’s the type of 'Swiss Family Robinson'-style retreat that represents a bygone Florida and has attracted famous writers and heiresses — not to mention presidents Carter and Kennedy," the piece writes.
Where is Cabbage Key?
Cabbage Key is a 100-acre island tucked off the coast of Fort Myers, part of a series of barrier islands in the Gulf of Mexico. It notes online it is an ice age sand dune. According to geologists, the island has not flooded completely since the last ice age.
USA TODAY previously described the island as "lush with tropical foliage" and "intoxicatingly relaxing."
When was Cabbage Key established?
The Florida Museum of Natural History writes the small island first appeared on charts as early as 1859, with it labeled back in 1899 as Guanal Key and Palmetto Island.
"The first owner was Otto Stellrich from 1899 to 1905. The island reverted to state ownership after he failed to pay the two-dollar annual tax. After 1905, various persons tended groves, raised hogs, and brewed moonshine there," the museum writes.
Then in 1936, Alan Rinehart, a producer for Paramount Pictures, purchased the island. He hosted several stars and writers, including Katherine Hepburn. His mother, Mary Roberts Rinehart, wrote several short stories, articles, and plays while living on the island.
In 1944, Jan and Larry Stults purchased and re-named the island to "Cabbage Key." The residence became a restaurant and six-room accommodation. Over the years, the island has hosted the likes of Tony Bennett, Walter Cronkite, Ed McMahon, Ted Koppel, John F. Kennedy Jr., Hulk Hogan, Rob Lowe, Julia Roberts and Kevin Costner, to name a few.
How do you get to Cabbage Key?
So, can you just drive your car on over or take an Uber to this dream destination? Not quite.
The only way to get to Cabbage Key Island is by boat, ferry, water taxi, or seaplane. There are no bridges or causeways connecting Cabbage Key to the mainland.
Since there's no way to access the island by cars, this means there are no cars on the island — period!
Was Cabbage Key damaged by Hurricane Ian?
Like most of Southwest Florida, Cabbage Key took a major beating from Hurricane Ian in September 2022.
Based on past News-Press reports , the island saw damage from the wind and storm surge. Luckily, the island was said to bounce back and reopen after six months.
What restaurant does Cabbage Key have?
According to its own website , the iconic "The Cabbage Key Inn & Restaurant " is the spot to be as the only restaurant on the island. Known by many as “the bar with all the money on the walls,” its bar has also been serving up drinks to boaters for over 60 years.
T+L highlights other popular menu items such as stone crab claws, frozen Key lime pie, and the signature Cabbage Creeper rum cocktail. The restaurant is open daily for breakfast, lunch, and dinner all year long.
Does Jimmy Buffett have a connection to Cabbage Key?
The late Jimmy Buffett is rumored to have written his hit song “Cheeseburger in Paradise” for the menu item at Cabbage Key. The story behind Buffett's famous hit about a favorite food item goes like this:
He supposedly was out sailing in the Gulf when he docked his boat on Cabbage Key, a small island located off Lee County's Pine Island and only accessible by boat.
Buffett headed toward The Cabbage Key Inn & Restaurant , an 80-year-old business known especially for its "bar with lots of money on the walls.
Likely hungry and looking for a place to eat and enjoy a cold one, Buffett ordered a cheeseburger that probably tasted like paradise after a few hours on the water.
