Man standing at base of Schoellkopf Elevator in Niagara Falls, NY

On the morning of June 7, 1956, workers noticed water seeping into the plant from the back wall. By mid-afternoon, the cracks in the rear wall were widening while 40 men worked with sandbags to stop the flow of water.

At 5:00 PM, the Schoellkopf Power Station sustained a catastrophic collapse which destroyed two thirds (2/3) of the plant. Six generators capable of producing 322,500 horsepower had been demolished. Damage was estimated at $100 million dollars. The most devastating was the sudden loss of 400,000 kilowatts of power from the power grid. Suddenly, a loud rumble was heard from behind the wall, and the wall began to collapse. One of the workers, Richard Draper of Lewiston, was killed. The rest escaped unscathed. The entire southern portion of the plant collapsed into the river below. As the generators blew apart, some debris was propelled to the Canadian side of the gorge.

In 2013, the Maid of the Mist began construction on the site as a location to store their boats during the harsh winter months. As part of that project, the original elevator shaft was restored and elevator access to the Gorge and the Schoellkopf site was granted. Visitors can also access a connected hiking trail as well.

There is no cost to ride the elevator and it is open seasonally.

A new perspective on Niagara Falls

For more than a century, the imposing Beaux-Arts-style building perched beside Horseshoe Falls harnessed the fierce flow of the Niagara River to bring electricity to western New York and southern Ontario.

Now, Canada’s first major hydroelectric power station is the newest major tourist attraction on the Canadian side of the falls. Amid a sea of commercialized activities that include zip lines, casinos and a climate-controlled SkyWheel , the Niagara Parks Power Station offers visitors a unique perspective of one of the world’s most famous natural wonders.

Decommissioned in 2006, the power station sat idle for years until the Niagara Parks Commission , the self-funded government agency that oversees the area, took over and set in motion a plan to bring it back to life as a tourist attraction. After a nearly $19 million renovation, the 65,000-square-foot main hall opened to the public in July 2021, followed a year later by a walkable tunnel that ends at a large platform with unparalleled views of the entire Niagara Gorge.

Near Niagara Falls, U.S. and Canadian forts from the War of 1812 still face off

The viewing platform at the end of the tunnel was the finishing touch of the restoration and is a key step in understanding the hydroelectric process from start to finish. Visitors descend by glass elevator to the wheel pit, where they follow the same path the spent water once took on its way back to the lower Niagara River. Here, the close-up views of Horseshoe Falls emphasize the power of the water and how it was harnessed back in the 1900s to generate electricity.

Pristine equipment

Beginning operation in 1905 using patents developed by Nikola Tesla and George Westinghouse, the facility is one of the few power stations from the early 20th century to close with all its equipment intact, said Marcelo Gruosso, senior director of engineering and parks operations at the Niagara Parks Commission.

The people who worked at the Canadian Niagara Power Co. “took exceptional care and pride in it,” he said. “Everything you could imagine was still there when it closed. They even left the drawing board.”

Gruosso and his team had access to 1,500 archival photos dating as far back as 1901, chronicling “every step of the build,” he said. That included the construction of a huge temporary cofferdam to divert the thundering water from the building site. More than a century later, workers used modern technology and tools to build a similar watertight enclosure to hold back the river so they could reinforce the walls.

Then there’s the marvel that is the tailrace tunnel (the channel that discharged the tailwater back to the river), built in the early 1900s with little more than pickaxes, shovels and rudimentary dynamite.

Engineers weren’t sure what they would find when they first explored the idea of opening the tunnel to visitors. They built a swing stage, a scaffolding platform akin to those used in high-rise window cleaning, that allowed them access to the cavernous space beneath the power station to assess the tunnel’s condition.

“Once we saw how incredibly good the condition of the tunnel was after 100 years of use, we said, ‘Okay, we definitely have a winner here,’ ” he said.

On a recent visit, a dozen or so visitors stood on the platform, basking in the sunny August morning and unobstructed views of the Niagara Gorge. Horseshoe Falls felt stunningly close, its rushing water a soundtrack that invited lingering. The Maid of the Mist and Hornblower boat cruises, long a fixture of Niagara tourism, barreled past, carrying poncho-clad passengers to and from the base of the falls.

“It offers a whole new perspective on the lower Niagara River,” said David Adames, the commission’s chief executive.

Central Canadian locale

The power station is an easy walk from Table Rock Centre , a prime shopping and eating hub in Queen Victoria Park , yet it feels far removed from the bustling, selfie-taking crowds that tend to dominate the area. A landscaped walkway leads past a key piece of hydroelectric equipment known as an exciter unit (now a blue-and-white art installation) to the main entrance. It’s the first hint that the experience ahead might go beyond a typical nuts-and-bolts engineering tour.

Inside, the light-filled “generator hall” features 51 large arched windows, limestone and granite floors, and the original 14-foot-high red-brass doors, each weighing 3,500 pounds. Interactive exhibits, vintage photographs and repurposed artifacts show how the water entered the building via a 575-foot-long forebay, then flowed through huge steel tubes known as penstocks to spin the blades in turbines that powered the generators to produce electricity.

A six-province jaunt through Canada provides a chance to revel in the classics

Visitors can opt for a self-guided or guided tour of the power station’s main hall, which intersperses history exhibits with interactive displays and original equipment such as motorized oil switches, giant wrenches and all 11 alternating-current generators (painted a striking robin’s-egg blue). Computerized screens hooked up to an original control panel let children test their hydropower knowledge and solve simulated emergencies. There are also exhibits detailing Nikola Tesla’s groundbreaking inventions and his famous DC vs. AC “currents war” with Thomas Edison; a paean to female scientists and staffers; and a scale model of the plant as it looked during peak operation.

The gift shop is also a must-see, not only for its eclectic selection (Tesla socks, upcycled beer glasses, triple-gear wall clocks), but also for its location beside a 100-foot section of the original forebay, where water from the Niagara River first entered the power station. Visitors can peer over a glass protector to observe the inner forebay, which, through underwater arches, filtered the incoming water into the plant before it churned through the penstocks.

In the evening, the power station hosts “ Currents: Niagara’s Power Transformed ,” a sleek, highly immersive light-and-sound show that brings the machinery to life through music, special laser effects and 3D mapping and imagery.

About 200,000 people visited the power station in its first year of operation, according to the commission. With the tunnel’s opening in July, officials expect the number to grow to 300,000 to 350,000 annual visitors, thanks in part to the attraction’s ability to appeal to a wide range of interest levels, said Adames, the CEO.

“There are so many stories to tell, starting with those who are simply curious about what’s behind those beautiful stone walls,” he added. “There’s the story of hydroelectric generation, the story of innovators at the turn of the century, the human story of the people who worked in the plant and the competition of the people building [power] plants on both sides of the border. It has all of it.”

A tunnel under Niagara Falls is now open to visitors after more than a century

It's an electrical experience

Erika Mailman

It's cool, dark and a little bit spooky. This tunnel created directly beneath the crashing thunder of Niagara Falls just opened, as reported by CNN . You can walk through, wince, imagine the walls buckling – and also feel good thinking about how this tunnel once harnessed the hydro power of Horseshoe Falls to create electricity. At one time, this tunnel held 71,000 gallons of water that rushed through it at almost 30 feet per second.

A dim tunnel with a sihouetted person leads to an arched view of the falls beyond

The tunnel’s been there a while, since 1905, but this summer marks the first time it was opened to the public. It was part of the Niagara Parks Power Station which operated from 1905 until 2006, using water from the falls to run huge generators that powered the area (and helped Buffalo earn the moniker the City of Light). Now decommissioned, the power station offers tours of the 2,200-foot tunnel built on the Canadian side, resting 180 feet below the station. First, tour the plant's immersive exhibits and appreciate its artifacts.

Then, just like Charlie, you’ll descend in a great glass elevator to walk through the tunnel (included in your Niagara Parks Power station admission; the experience takes about two hours and costs $28 for adults, $18.25 for kids 6-12, and free for 5 and under) and get panoramic views of the falls from a new, ground-level viewing platform from a lower vantage point. This incredible platform lets you experience the falls from the water level, as if you were on a boat. You can also add on a guided tour of the station (but the tunnel is self-guided) for an extra fee.

A woman is seen from behind as she places her hand on the platform railing to watch a boat go near the falls

There’s also a new nighttime sound and light show called Currents (cute) inside the station, where you walk “amongst the towering turbines on the generator floor, while projected images and light react to your movement and tell Niagara's story of power,” according to the website for Niagara Parks. The show incorporates 3D projection, interactive lights and a musical score.

Large electrical equipment glows with yellow and purple lighting during the nighttime show at the power station.

There’s a reason people used to honeymoon at Niagara Falls; the water’s powerful push over the edge is impressive, hard to describe and, yes, climactic.

Bonus: Don’t miss the Falls Illumination, an Instagrammable moment of pure awe. Every evening starting at dusk, the falls are lit by multicolored lights to create dazzling effects. The five-minute light show is often intended to mimic nature: such as Aurora Borealis, sunrise, sunset and rainbows. Check the website for the illumination schedule .

Niagara Parks Power Station Review including Currents and the Tunnel

Last Updated January 10, 2024 William Tang

You are here: Home » Attractions & Experiences » Niagara Parks Power Station Review including Currents and the Tunnel

Niagara Falls has a brand new attraction. Where once, this was something you could only catch a glimpse of during the once-a-year Doors Open, the Niagara Parks Power Station is now finally open to the public where you’ll be able to delve into the history, engineering, and science, while marvelling and the thrilling revival.

There are two ways to see the station, either during the day or night. Having done both, let me breakdown the differences between the guided tour and Currents: Niagara’s Power Transformed show.

Where to stay in Niagara?

  • The best Niagara Falls hotels to consider are the newly renovated Sheraton Fallsview and the Hilton Niagara Falls/Fallsview . For the best views, the Embassy Suites Niagara Falls/Fallsview is excellent. If you’re thinking about Niagara-on-the-Lake, the Prince of Wales Hotel is my favourite.

Here's what we're covering:

Two ways to see the Niagara Parks Power Station

About the historic Niagara Parks Power Station

niagara parks power station exterior

One of the most important stories of Niagara, Ontario, and Canada is one of harnessing the power of the Niagara River and the human ingenuity to build something so massive and complex out of basic tools.

Through the patents from Nikola Tesla and other inventions from that era, construction of the plant completed in 1905 and began distributing electricity to Fort Erie in 1907. It wasn’t until 2006 when the facility was shut down.

As Ontario’s first green energy project, this truly paved the way for hydro power to be a mainstay of how we receive electricity even today. There’s a reason why, as someone from Toronto, we say “I just received my hydro bill”. Hydro generation is a big part of who we are as a province.

The historic Niagara Parks Power Station is located near the crest of the Horseshoe Falls of Niagara Falls on the Canadian side.

After Niagara Parks received the plant back after the lease expired in 2009, work started in 2017 to find an adaptive reuse of the space. To ensure its safety, the building underwent extensive renovation to repair damage and also incorporation of interpretive and interactive experiences throughout the main floor in collaboration with Science North .

Outside of the power station is also a brand new Power Plaza with a garden, benches, and a large exciter on display.

Fast forward to 2021 and now the station is open to the public with both daytime and nighttime experiences available.

niagara parks power station generator floor aerial view

Currently there are two primary ways to see the Niagara Parks Power Station .

One is during the day when the generator floor will be open for exploration. The other is at night with a show called Currents: Niagara’s Power Transformed, an immersive multimedia experience.

Daytime power station experience

niagara falls electric plant tour

In the daytime, the Niagara Parks Power Station is open for visitors to come and walk the entirety of the ground generator floor. In this landmark attraction, history comes to life.

All of the equipment has been preserved and left intact, providing you with an authentic look at how a hydroelectric power plant built in 1905 worked with its heavy machinery and workers behind the scenes.

Over the length of the main hall, you’ll be immediately drawn to the large blue-topped alternators. Following along, you’ll encounter numerous large interpretive signs that tells you the story of the power station from the science to its rich history and cultural significance.

Key themes that you’ll find are:

  • Place – History and Geography
  • Plant – Architecture and Construction
  • Harnessing the “True Power” of the Falls
  • Power – Science, Technology & Innovation

Scattered throughout the floor are interactive educational experiences that were designed by Science North from Sudbury that are extremely well done.

  • Follow the Flow – Giant 3D model that shows a cross section of the plant with digital displays of how water flowed through.
  • Take Control – Power station training game through gesture activated screens to help solve problems you might encounter as a worker.
  • Experience the Rush – Walk through a penstock to get a sense of how much water was forcefully rushed into the building.

Throughout, you’ll also find QR codes on various signs which are all part of the browser-based app that’ll help expand on story panels. For instance, you can scan to learn more what’s behind the locked grate or cabinet.

While you can explore the station on your own, they also offer guided tours (45 minutes). In a small group, you’ll be taken through the plant where your guide will explain key areas of the plant, share its history, and point out spots you should come back to. Once you’re done, you’ll be able to continue on your own.

Lastly, there’s a gift shop located in the forebay area of the power station. This is where water gets drawn into the station but part of it has been filled in to open up a new space next to the main hall. Here, you’ll find repurposed fixtures and equipment to create display areas for various souvenirs and merchandise.

Note that there is no time limit or specific entry times when buying your ticket.

Overall, you’ll find that the day tour of the power station is incredibly educational, fun, and awe inspiring.

Nighttime Currents immersive light show

niagara falls electric plant tour

The nighttime experience is completely different. Currents: Niagara’s Power Transformed is a multimedia experience that features LED lighting effects, sound effects, projection technology, and reactive technology produced by Thinkwell’s Montreal Studio .

Immediately, when you arrive into the station, you’ll notice the blue waves of light above you, creating a false ceiling that almost makes it feel like you’re under water.

You’ll be guided into the gift shop in the forebay where you’ll wait for the show the start. With your tickets in hand, get scanned and walk into the central part of the Niagara Parks Power Station.

The floors and walls are lit with ethereal projections of water and animation. Walk the space encapsulated by 3 giant alternators and you’ll notice that the light seems to follow you around. This is no accident because they have technology that can track everyone on the floor and react to your movements.

The show officially starts with the start of their LA-recorded film score and this is when you’ll see everything from the walls, floor, ceiling, and alternators come to life.

There are 3 acts to the performance:

  • The Beginning
  • Harnessing the Power
  • Reawakening the Station

Without giving too much away, I encourage you to walk around, look everywhere, spot moments when the environment reacts to where you are, and feel the historic power station come back to life.

The best comparison is with something like the recent Immersive Van Gogh Exhibit . However, what sets it aside is that it is a much more captivating show because it incorporates the surrounding space versus projecting on walls, the music score is riveting, and takes you through journey.

The performance from entry to exit is 45 minutes but the actual light show is just a bit over 20 minutes.

Something worth nothing is that purchasing tickets to Currents is for the show only. After the show is over, you won’t be able to walk the floor of the power station. Treat this as performance instead of a museum tour.

Also, the light show doesn’t take place the entire length of the generator floor. It is focused on the middle 3 alternator turbines.

niagara parks power station review at night

There are distinctly two different ways to see the Niagara Parks Power Station but there are actually quite a number of types of tickets that can be purchased that’s worth breaking down.

All ticket prices are pre-tax so add 13% HST to the total. Children aged 5 and under are free.

Daytime Tickets

  • Power Station Admission – Adult $28 / Child $18.25
  • Power Station + Guided Tour – Adult $38 / Child $25

Nighttime Tickets

  • Currents: Niagara’s Power Transformed – Adult $30 / Child $19.50

Daytime and Nighttime Tickets

  • Power Pass – Night Show Package (Power Station + Tunnel + Currents) – Adult $46 / Child $30
  • Power Pass with Guided Tour – Guided Tour + Night Show Package – Adult $54 / Child $35

Combination with other Niagara Parks attractions

The Wonder Pass Plus is a great combination that includes all of the best Niagara Parks attractions for Adult $45 / Child $29:

  • Journey Behind the Falls
  • Niagara’s Fury
  • Butterfly Conservatory
  • Niagara Parks Power Station + Tunnel
  • 2-day WEGO Bus Access
  • 2-day Falls Incline Railway Access

Just keep in mind that this does not include the night show, Currents.

The parking lot officially known as Falls Parking (Lot A) is adjacent to the Niagara Parks Power Station and the drop-in rate is $35 (total) which gives you access to all Niagara Parks lots for the day.

You can purchase a daily parking pass online for $30.97 which looks like a discount but is really just $35 after tax. That said, this will save you some time because you would’ve prepaid for it.

We found that the barcode reader at the parking lot gate is quite finicky. If it doesn’t work for you, just press the “Assistance” button and they’ll get you in.

Reserving your tickets is highly recommended.

niagara parks power station attraction interior

Debating whether you should include this in your Niagara Falls itinerary or not, here are a few things to think about to convince you.

  • To my knowledge, this station is the only one you can tour inside in Ontario.
  • Currents: Niagara’s Power Transformed is a feast for the senses and just incredibly well done. Worth every penny.
  • Walk through over 115 years of history and see it meticulously preserved.
  • You don’t have to be an engineer to understand how a power station works. Thanks to the guided tour and interactive displays, it’s easy to understand.
  • Hydro power from the Niagara River is an integral part of Niagara’s past, present, and future and this gives you an opportunity to see it firsthand.

Having done both the daytime and nighttime Currents show, here are a few tips I’d recommend for your Niagara power plant tour.

  • Plan to be here at least 3-4 hours if you want to not only do the guided tour but also see all the artifacts, read the interpretive signs, and try the interactive activations.
  • Purchase the day and night combo so you can do both experiences in a day.
  • A great combination with the Niagara Parks Power Station is the Journey Behind the Falls , and dinner at Table Rock House Restaurant .
  • It is cheaper to buy Journey Behind the Falls and the Currents and Day Tour package than it is to buy the Power Pass and Currents.
  • At Currents, pay attention to the floor and how it reacts to your movements.
  • I encourage you to move around when at Currents and pay attention to the wall, the alternator, and the floor.

Review of Niagara Parks Power Station

niagara parks power station street sign

Over the years we’ve built our own 3 day Niagara itinerary packed with adventures with highlights like White Water Walk and Niagara Glen . We also revisited for our fall colours video we also had a chance to ride on the Whirlpool Aerocar which was a delight.

All of the attractions I’ve done so far as part of Niagara Parks have been around for some time and so when I learned about the new Niagara Parks Power Station, I couldn’t help but feel excited for something brand new but also ironically so old at the same time.

To me, coming to see the power station during the day and then coming back for Currents night show is a duality of experiences that really blend well together.

niagara parks power station experience the rush walking through a penstock

First, starting off with our guided tour, I was fascinated with every angle, artifact, interactive display, and micro details. I think if we were there on my own, we would’ve felt overwhelmed but having a guide take us through the key parts of the storytelling and facts helped ground the visit and give us a really good idea of why this station is so significant.

As an engineer-by-education, I appreciated how they were able to take complex concepts and make them easily digestible through their series of displays and in particular the Follow the Flow model that shows where the water comes in and out.

I think you could easily spend 3 hours and 2 hours if you’re on a tight schedule. There’s that much to see!

niagara parks power station the tunnel experience

A year after the Niagara Parks Power Station opened, they opened the even more impressive tunnel which takes you all the way down 180 feet beneath the halls of the station and all the way out to edge of Niagara River.

The journey begins from the power station itself where there are two elevators that swiftly take you down 180 feet. This is a glass elevator, giving you full view of the massive penstock pipes where the water would’ve flowed down to eventually turn the turbine to generate power.

Once you reach the bottom, it opens straight into the 2,200-foot-long tunnel that’s been cleaned up and restored for visitors. Designed to be fully accessible, it’s a flat and easy-to-walk concrete walkway that leads you all the way out to the viewing platform.

Along the way, there are several information panels that tell the story of the tunnel and show how far you’ve progressed along the way. What you have to imagine is that you’re walking along the same path of all of that water that had to be ejected out back into the Niagara River.

One thing you’ll remark is that it’s quite the long walk. At a normal walking pace, it’ll take you a good 15 minutes to get there. Luckily there are also benches along the way if you need to take a break.

The breathtaking moment is when you can hear the rumbling of the falls and the tunnel opens out to an open platform that has clear view of the American Falls to the left and Horseshoe Falls to the right. There’s a slight refreshing mist if any at all, and if you’re lucky, a rainbow might greet you.

This is a can’t-miss experience that adds to the reasons why you have to visit the power station. The walkway is a bit long but you’ll be rewarded with a beautiful view that puts you right by the base of Niagara Falls.

niagara parks power station nigcurrenrts immersive experience night show

This show is something I’ve simply never seen before. It’s a dazzling bombardment of the senses where you feel like you are part of the performance.

The coolest part are the points in the show where the projections seemingly follow you and everyone else around. Technology deployed at this level is unheard of.

When they say that the station comes to life, it’s no joke. From the freezing of the Ice Age, lush landscapes painted on the walls and floors, the swirling of lights around the giant alternators, a TRON-like moment, and animated characters peeking out the windows, it all felt so real.

And that’s the thing, this is a show that will give you serious goosebumps because you absolutely feel every moment of the show unfolding around you.

Beyond the incredible projections, the musical score is equally as impressive and blockbuster movie-quality.

Evening Combination

See Currents and have dinner at Table Rock House Restaurant with hotel pick up and a commemorative certificate.

What I really want to say is that you really need to do both daytime (power station and tunneL) and nighttime (Currents) experiences because there’s almost no crossover in what you’ll see and do.

If I had to choose, I’d have to say the daytime experience of the ground generator floor. I loved being able to get right up close to the equipment, getting an appreciation of Nikola Tesla’s work, the current wars between AC and DC, the massive undertaking to not just build but keep the station running, and also the industrial heritage that you won’t find anywhere else.

Niagara Parks Power Station: Nikola Tesla’s contributions

A Genius Inventor…

Nikola Tesla was born on July 10th, 1856. He was fascinated with designing gadgets and problem solving from an early age. His first inventions, made as early as age four, included simple types of bladeless turbines and homemade fishing hooks to catch frogs. He loved to learn and wanted to study engineering as a young adult.

The early years

In 1875, at the age of 19, Tesla began studying electrical engineering at the Austrian Polytechnic Institute. His interest in creating generators was sparked when a physics professor demonstrated a model of a direct current dynamo generator in class. Tesla became obsessed with the idea of creating an alternating current generator powered by polyphase electromagnetic fields. During that time, personal challenges led Tesla to drop out of university just three years later. He never returned to finish a degree.

Alternating Current

In 1888, Tesla delivered his first large public lecture about the benefits that alternating current could bring to the world. George Westinghouse, an American engineer and entrepreneur, was in favour of his proposed alternating current system and needed the technology that Tesla was able to develop. The two reached an agreement in the summer of that same year and began to manufacture Tesla-based motors on a large scale. Their work introduced the concept of alternating current that changed the world.

The original equipment in the generator hall was meticulously shined and restored to showcase the incredible power generating technology built in the early 1900s.

Working with George Westinghouse

Tesla and Westinghouse had propelled the arguments of alternating current over direct current far enough that it was their technology that was chosen to light up 100,000 lightbulbs at the Chicago World’s Fair. Nearly 28 million people attended the “City of Light” that spring season. The event proved that alternating current technology was safe and efficient. Winning the contract for the 1893 World’s Fair secured the future of alternating current and Westinghouse and Tesla cemented their legacy in the next stage of electrical transmission development. The power station was built utilizing durable materials such as limestone, granite, brass, and copper.

Tesla patented over 300 inventions around the world in his lifetime. Inside the Niagara Parks Power Station, Tesla has nine patents.

The AC Generator

Tesla’s AC generator produced electricity by electromagnetic induction. To generate electricity in a coil, either the coil should rotate with respect to a magnetic field, or a magnetic field should rotate with respect to the coil. The alternators inside the Niagara Parks Power Station used the latter approach. The armature coils remained stationary as the rotating magnetic flux associated with the rotor induced electricity in them.

Tesla Patents

Tesla was behind some of the world’s greatest technological achievements. He patented over 300 inventions around the world in his lifetime, including 112 in the United States and seven in Canada.

Inside the Niagara Parks Power Station, Tesla has nine patents. These patents include the Electro Magnetic Motor, Electrical Transmission of Power and the Dynamo Electric Machine. His brilliant ideas had no boundaries.
