What’s the meaning of ‘Châteauneuf du Pape’? While the word ‘ neuf ‘ included in the title may serve to confuse and have you asking ‘where are the nine castles of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the translation to English simply means ‘Pope’s New Castle’. Interestingly, the ‘ du-Pape ‘ part at the end was only added in 1893 by locals who were right in their hunch that this more prestigious sounding name would reward them with more tourism.

When it comes to reaching the enchanting village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, there are several transportation options to consider.

The best way, in my opinion, is by car . Whether you prefer driving yourself or hiring a driver, having a car provides convenience and flexibility to explore the region at your own pace. From Avignon, where we were based, we opted for an Uber, which whisked us away to Châteauneuf-du-Pape in just 20 minutes, at a cost of €30 each way.

For those relying on public transport , Avignon serves as a central hub for navigation. Buses depart frequently from Avignon’s central bus station, offering a convenient way to reach Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

If you’re arriving from another major city in France, chances are you’ll disembark at Avignon TGV station, located a few kilometres outside the city. From there, you can catch a train to Sorgues—Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

The train journey from Avignon TGV to Sorgues—Châteauneuf-du-Pape typically takes around 40 minutes. On faster services, you can reach your destination in as little as 16 minutes. Upon arriving at Sorgues—Châteauneuf-du-Pape station, keep in mind howeveer that the village is still 7 km away.

How to get around once you’re there

Getting around Châteauneuf-du-Pape is fairly straightforward, although you may need to opt for vehicular assistance to reach some areas.

The town itself is petite, making it ideal for leisurely walks on foot. Meander through its narrow streets, adorned with delightful buildings and enticing wine shops, immersing yourself in the enchanting atmosphere.

If your accommodation is situated just outside the town, then fear not either! The roads are pleasantly tranquil, allowing for enjoyable strolls to reach the heart of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, as long as the distance is manageable. We stayed at Hostellerie du Château les Fines Roches and walked through the vineyards as well as a quiet road in order to reach the town, which all added to the experience.

However, when it comes to exploring the surrounding countryside and visiting wineries located further afield, it is recommended to have access to a car or rely on a taxi service. This provides the convenience and flexibility needed to reach the vineyards and relish their exceptional wines without any inconvenience.

The red wines of Chateauneuf du Pape offer an impressive array of flavours, showcasing vibrant red and black cherries, strawberries, kirsch, black pepper, black raspberry, spice, earth, and the characteristic garrigue, reminiscent of the region’s aromatic scrubland of sage, rosemary, and lavender. These wines, with their lush and velvety textures, evolve gracefully over time, revealing silky nuances.

Red wine takes centre stage in Chateauneuf du Pape, accounting for the majority of its production. However, a lesser-known gem awaits in the form of Châteauneuf-du-Pape Blanc.

While white wines represent only about 7% of the vineyards in the region, they captivate with their fruit-forward profiles, offering a delightful interplay of fresh, sweet, tropical, citrus, and occasional exotic fruit notes. Some of the finest white Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines, such as Beaucastel Vieille Vignes, possess remarkable aging potential, enchanting connoisseurs for decades.

The unique terroir of Châteauneuf-du-Pape plays a vital role in shaping these remarkable wines. From the rocky soils in the west, where galets roules (various rocks and pebbles) reflect light and radiate warmth to aid in the fruit’s ripening, to the sandy and clay-rich terroirs in the north and east, each soil composition adds its own touch of character and complexity.

With Grenache as the star grape, Châteauneuf-du-Pape embraces a rich tapestry of 13 grape varieties allowed by AOC laws, including Syrah, Mourvèdre, Cinsault, and more. This blend of grapes contributes to the wine’s distinctive style, often high in alcohol and tannins, with the potential for extensive aging.

When exploring the best wineries in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, be sure to consider visiting renowned estates like Château La Nerthe , where the passion for winemaking and reverence for tradition merge harmoniously.

Before embarking on your exploration of the best wineries in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, it is essential to plan your visit to ensure a seamless and more enjoyable experience. Considerations such as transportation and accommodation play a vital role in maximising your time in this renowned wine region.

If you prefer not to drive or wish to indulge in the local wine offerings without worrying about transportation logistics, look for wineries located within walking distance of the village. Châteauneuf-du-Pape boasts several such wineries, including Château des Fines Roches , where we stayed, which offers both exceptional wines and convenient proximity to the town.

To make the most of your visit, conduct thorough research beforehand.

If you’re overnighting, seek recommendations from your accommodation provider, who can offer insights into the best Châteauneuf-du-Pape vineyards to visit based on your preferences. Additionally, browse the websites of larger wine producers, as they often provide various wine-tasting options that require advance booking. Planning ahead ensures that you secure a spot at your desired wineries and allows for a more stress-free experience.

We visited Château Fortia , which is located just on the outskirts of the village and was exactly what we were looking for in a Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine tasting experience.

During our visit, we were fortunate to enjoy a tranquil Saturday afternoon with the added pleasure of being the only visitors at that time. Our knowledgeable guide, Paul, made the experience truly memorable and we had a great conversation with him throughout our 1-hour visit.

He led us on an engaging tour of the winemaking facilities, providing valuable insights into the wine production process. The highlight was undoubtedly the tasting session, where we had the opportunity to savour a range of wines, including their premium red Châteauneuf-du-Pape and a rare and exquisite oaky white that’s produced in limited quantities.

Château Fortia also offers a unique attraction—a self-guided vineyard walk. This complementary experience allows you to immerse yourself in the vineyard environment, offering informative boards along the way to enhance your understanding of grape cultivation and the diverse varietals grown on the estate. Take approximately an hour to wander through their picturesque vineyard, taking in the sights and absorbing the rich viticultural knowledge shared throughout.

Some vineyards to consider visiting:

Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a wine lover’s paradise. As a mere wine enthusiast (I am by no means a sommelier or a hardcore wine expert) these suggestions can serve as helpful pointers for your wine-centric journey through the region. As mentioned before, it’s worth doing a little bit of your own research and some of these wineries have better websites (and clearer information about visiting) that others.

Those with the clearest information, I have placed towards the top of the list!

These vineyards offer a diverse range of experiences and wines, allowing visitors to explore the unique terroir and history of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

Go wine tasting at one of the many caves

If you’d prefer to taste a variety of Châteauneuf-du-Pape from different wineries, then one of the best ways to experience them is by visiting the local caves.

Mathias’ Cave is a popular wine cellar in the appellation, offering wine tastings and selling a variety of wine bottles.

Les Caves Saint Charles , located in a 13th-century cellar, is another excellent option. They provide exclusive Châteauneuf-du-Pape tastings and wine experiences, where you can learn about the intricacies of wine tasting from their knowledgeable Maître Sommelier. Make sure to book your tastings in advance, as they are by appointment only.

Go to the Musée du Vin – Maison Brotte

For wine enthusiasts interested in delving into the history and craftsmanship behind Châteauneuf-du-Pape wines, a visit to the Musée du Vin – Maison Brotte is a must. Established in 1931, Maison Brotte is a family-owned winery with a rich heritage of winemaking spanning five generations.

The museum showcases a remarkable collection of rare wine-growing and wine-making tools, including centuries-old Foudres, presses, and grape treading devices. Each section of the museum is themed to highlight different stages of the winemaking process. Maison Brotte’s expert vintners produce exceptional wines with a focus on quality and eco-friendly practices.

We didn’t get to visit as we were already so full of wine when we considered it, but if I were to go back to Châteauneuf-du-Pape I would very much like to visit.

Visit Châteauneuf-du-Pape Castle

If you’re wondering what to do in Châteauneuf-du-Pape besides from drinking wine, then you can immerse yourself in the history of Châteauneuf-du-Pape by exploring its iconic castle.

The castle’s origins trace back over 800 years, and it has witnessed significant events throughout the centuries. Initially destroyed during invasions, it was rebuilt and renovated several times. The castle served as a residence for the Popes and played a role in the Wars of Religion.

Over time, it fell into disrepair but was restored in the 16th century. During World War II, the castle was used by the German occupation forces. Today, you can visit the castle and admire its remains, including the keep and parts of the walls, which offer glimpses into its architectural grandeur.

The castle also hosts various events and festivities related to the wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape.

While it is very much a castle ruin, I still found it to be rather impressive. As you make your way up the hill towards it, you really get a sense of how large it must have been when fully intact and as you explore within its shell, you can make out areas where additional floors used to be – it’s quite an evocative experience, if also quite a windy one – the castle really is quite high (there are exceptional views from its walls) – so expect some bluster to go with the increase in elevation.

Explore Châteauneuf-du-Pape village

A pleasant thing to do is to take a leisurely stroll through the charming village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, which is nestled at the base of the castle ruins.

The village is pretty much dedicated to the renowned Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine and the broader Côtes du Rhône appellation. With its 3,000 hectares of vineyards, the production of Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine really is is the heart and soul of the village and you can’t help but note this when walking around.

While wandering the streets, make sure to visit the Place de la Fontaine, where you’ll find numerous tasting cellars representing different wine estates. These cellars offer the opportunity to sample and purchase a wide variety of wines.

As you explore, you’ll also come across narrow winding streets, beautiful fountains, and historical sites such as the 14th-century Souspiron fountain, old bread ovens, and an oil mill.

Don’t expect to see too much, however. The village is very much, well, a village – so there is a limit to the amount of streets and attractions that it does have. We did, however, discover lots of sleepy, friendly cats – and anywhere with cats is great in my book!

For those seeking a cultural and historical experience, a visit to Saint Theodoric Chapel might be worth your while.  This charming chapel is dedicated to Saint Theodoric, who is believed to have contributed to the development of viticulture in the region. Chateauneuf du Pape is probably the most prestigious village "Cru" of the Côtes du Rhône and export wine all over the world.

The history of this small village (about 2000 people) is very much connected to the history of the Popes in Avignon (14th century) and the village has adopted the same name as the wine (Chateauneuf du Pape) in 1893.

In 1923 with Baron Leroy Chateauneuf du Pape has provided the prototype of the AOC rules promulgated in 1936.

Robert Parker qualified the area as one of the most fascinating wine regions in the world.

My partner and I have just spent a full day with Rémi visiting two vineyards in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape region, the city of Avignon and lavender fields in the Luberon! Unbelievable! He met us at our hotel on time and we started right away. He was fluent in English and was keen to establish cultural connections with his clients. He is a trained sommelier, but he will take you wherever you want to go in Provence. He has extensive knowledge of the history of the region and current events. About halfway through he suggested a restaurant with wonderful views of the Rhône river and the countryside where we tasted a bottle of wine from a vineyard we had just visited. Overall a great guide that I would highly recommend.

How to correctly write and pronunciate Châteauneuf-du-Pape?

French language is not an easy one to learn for foreigners, and we all know how French pronunciation is tricky for non-French travelers! So here is our little guide to write and pronunciation one of France’s most prestigious wine appellation like a true French connoisseur.

We have done it all, whether for appellation or wine regions, it’s not always easy to spell names the right way. From chateaunneuf , chataeuneuf , chateunef , to chateuxneuf or chauteneuf , we know where the problem is.

In case you were note aware of it, it might help you to know that Château means “castle” in French, and neuf means “new”.  As a result, if you keep in mind “new castle” and spell one word after the other and there you go.

As a tip to make a good impression on your pronunciation, here’s what you can keep in mind to sound a little bit French: “shat-toe-nouf due pap”.

Exclusive access to some of the oldest and most confidential wineries in France. Private guided tour with a wine expert.

Tours and tasting in the Southern Rhône

Châteauneuf du Pape is both a historic town in the south of France and the largest appellation in the Southern Rhône. Covering over 3,200 hectares of vines, it stretches from the eastern bank of the Rhône in the north, down to Sorgues, near Avignon, in the south. Winemaking in the region was helped largely by Pope Clement V who moved the papacy to Avignon in 1308. The subsequent "Avignon" popes did much to improve viticultural techniques in the area.

When you think of Châteauneuf du Pape, think of wines reminiscent of the heat, opulence and spice of the south. Châteauneuf du Pape is unrivaled in its production of red wines which make up 90% of the region’s total, with white wines making up the other 10%. The rich, complex red wines are generally a blend of the three main grape varieties: Grenache noir, Syrah and Mourvèdre, though the appellation has several more permitted varieties. Delicious, tangy, highly aromatic white wines are also produced here using, among other varieties, Grenache blanc, Clairette and Roussanne. Though less well-known than their red counterparts, they are definitely worth a taste!

An expert guide will accompany you to share wine tasting techniques and the history of local wines, as well as to answer all of your wine-related questions on your wine tour of the celebrated region of Châteauneuf du Pape.

One Perfect Day in Châteauneuf-du-Pape – The Village and The Wine

Most people are familiar with the Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine however, what some people may not know is that the wine comes from a charming Provencal village with the same name. The village grew around Châteauneuf-du-Pape, The Pope’s New Castle, built as the summer residence for the Popes of Avignon in the 14 th century. And spending one perfect day in Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a must for wine lovers.

This blog post is about how to spend one perfect day in Châteauneuf-du-Pape exploring the village, visiting its unique vineyards, and tasting its delicious wine. It is easiest to do if you rent a car or hire a private driver. Making reservations at the wineries ahead of time is highly recommended.

Rhone Valley

History of CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE wine

Châteauneuf-du-Pape village is located between Avignon and Orange and as you are driving towards it, it appears as if the village is rising out of a sea of vines with the castle towering over the village.

Even though vines must have been planted and grown here before the arrival of the popes, there is no record of it, and they are credited with starting viticulture in the village which nowadays produces some of the best wines in the world. Châteauneuf-du-Pape is the original French appellation and has some of the strictest rules winegrowers and winemakers must follow.

For the longest time, Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine was sold in bulk to boost Burgendy’s strength. Only since the 1970s when a number of quality-minded producers moved to the southern Rhône did the quality of the wine change significantly and it became some of the top and sought-after wines in the world.

The main thing that sets Châteauneuf-du-Pape apart is its soil. The big, smooth, rolled stones – galets – scattered everywhere create rock beds across the vineyards with no visibility of soil whatsoever are a dead giveaway that you are in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine region.

Chateau Vineyards

As unique and beautiful as these big rocks are they make it very hard to work the land. The stones serve a dual purpose for the vineyards, they retain the heat and can hasten the ripening but they also protect the soil from becoming parched and help hold the moisture in the soil.

The southern Rhône region also experiences a strong summer wind called – Le Mistral . Le mistral can be helpful and harmful to the vines, it can help cool down the vines and closer to the harvest keep grapes free of humidity and mold. However, it can be so strong that it rips vines apart. That’s why the vines are pruned low to the ground.

One perfect day in Châteauneuf-du-Pape

During our visit, we had a beautiful windy day (not a strong Le Mistral ) but the next day we woke up with the valley completely covered in clouds. It was a majestic experience.

Le Mistral

The grapes that can be used in producing Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine are called Châteauneuf thirteen – eight reds and five whites. However, there are additional five rare grapes allowed so in reality, they should be called Châteauneuf eighteen.

Grenache is the base grape usually blended with other varietals such as mourvèrde – to add structure , syrah – to deepen the color and spice , and others that are not as important as these three main ones.

Two main factors in making Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine are low yield and the absence of new oak barrel aging. Grenache is usually vinified in very large cement tanks, and other grapes in large, old barrels. You will not see small new oak barrels in this appellation. Because of this you truly taste the terroir when drinking Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine – earthy, gamey flavor.

BEST THINGS TO DO IN CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE

  • Walk up to the Châteauneuf-du-Pape – The Castle
  • Visit the Wine Museum in the village
  • Visit local wine shops
  • Visit local wineries

Suggested Itinierary For One PErfect Day IN CHÂTEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE

Start the day with a visit to one of the oldest wineries in the region, Château La Nerthe . The Château, nestled in the green park surrounded by endless vines, was built in the 18 th century with a cellar from the 16 th century.

Rhone Valley

It is humbling to walk through the cellar that has been in existence for 5 centuries with Roman stones and massive oak barrels. Historically, archived records from Château La Nerthe have helped trace the first commercial sales of Châteauneuf-du-Pape wine.

Château La Nerthe is one of the few wineries that produce both red and white wine in this region (95% of Châteauneuf-du-Pape are red wines). The white wines are fresh with mineral expression and the red wines have superb elegance and fineness as well as a good balance between acidity and tannins.

We enjoyed a guided tour of the historical cellar and tasted 7 wines, including 5 Châteauneuf-du-Pape in a private room. The reservation was required for a tour of the cellar and private tasting, especially since we were visiting during the harvest season (late September). If you come in for a tasting and to purchase wine, walk-ins are welcome.

Château La Nerthe is set up with a shipping company to ship their wine to the USA. If you want to take more wine with you then you can carry in your luggage. They may waive the tasting fee depending on how much wine you purchase.

After the wine tour, head to the heart of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape village to explore the village, visit a wine museum, and enjoy lunch at one of the local spots . You can park the car at the bottom of the village and walk up to the castle, or you can drive up.

Pope's New Castel

On a beautiful September day, we parked at the bottom of the village and walked our way up to the Pope’s New Castle. What is left of the castle now are just ruins, but one could never tell until getting close to it. When at the castle take in the view of the surroundings, endless sea of vines around you and Rhône flowing to the west.

Rhone Valley

The village is full of wine shops selling different Château and Domaine wines, that you can ship to your home country or take with you. After exploring the village find one of the local places to enjoy lunch . We stopped at La Maisouneta – a little house of happiness – for delicious lunch and some more wine.

FUN FACT: As explained to us by one of the winemakers in the region, when the wine is labeled Château, it means the grapes are used from the single estate composed of vineyards surrounding a building or house. Where Domaine is a collection of vineyard parcels scattered through different villages and appellations.

The next stop is The Wine Museum – Musée du Vin Brotte . The museum offers a 45-minute audio tour in six different languages, and you can learn about Châteauneuf-du-Pape cru, the grape varieties, viticulture, vinification, and the aging process. At the end of your visit, you can also enjoy a tasting experience at a very reasonable price.

Visit + Discovery Tasting – €6 per person Visit + Prestige Tasting – €9 per person

Our final winery visit was to family-owned Château Fortia Sarl . The history of Château Fortia dates to the 18 th century when the estate became the property of Hercules Paul de Fortia. It was in the hands of the family until it was sold in 1890 to Hippolyte Bernard Le Saint who expanded and increase the surface area of the vines to 17 hectares.

Southern Rhone

In 1919 Madam Bernard Le Saint entrusts the estate to her daughter and son-in-law Baron Le Roy, who became one of the most important advocates for the creation of Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) for Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the very first appellation in France. Since then, the Château Fortia and its wine have stayed with the family Le Roy.

We started with the wine tasting in a quaint little tasting room, where we learned about the history of the estate, vineyards, and grapes . There are no cellar visits in September and October due to the harvest season and vinification.

Once we concluded the tasting, we explored Château’s wine trail . It is a self-guided walk through the vineyards following 12 explanatory panels that explain even further grape varieties and AOC Châteauneuf-du-Pape. It was a beautiful walk through the vineyards, but make sure you bring comfortable walking shoes, some water with you, and sunscreen. It takes about an hour to complete the walk.

Rhone Valley

WHERE DID WE STAY

We stayed in another Provencal village – Gordes at L’Amadnière bed and breakfast type of accommodation.

This worked better for us because we were exploring more wineries in Luberon. It is also a perfect location for exploring surrounding villages, bike trails, or hiking.

There are many beautiful villages in this area that you can stay in. Or if looking for a bigger town Avignon is only 15 minutes away.

The Best Week-end Wine Tasting in Châteauneuf-du-Pape

vinea-provence

Wine tasting is a different experience in France . In many countries, including the U.S., wineries are open on week-ends and this is usually the most popular time to visit.  In the Southern Rhône valley , as in all of France, this is not the case since the week-end, especially Sunday, is sacred.  Since many wineries do not have their own tasting rooms, and those that do are usually closed on week-ends, Vinadea is the place to know about. Winemakers got together to open the shop so wine lovers would have place to taste on week-ends and holidays. But it is a wonderful place to go any day of the week.

wine-tasting

Vinadea is absolutely the best of the multiple-winery tasting rooms in Châteauneuf . I live nearby and have been going here since 2005.  Vinadea is a sales co-op of about 85 wineries in Châteauneuf, with hundreds of bottles from the very best wineries. Among others you can find Château de Beaucastel , Château la Nerthe , Domaine de la Solitude , St Préfert , Vaudieu , Marcoux , Gardine , Sénéchaux ,  Beaurenard , Janasse , Saint Dominique , Clos du Caillou ,  and many, many more.

Every day there are about 6-10 bottles of the rare white as well as the red Châteauneuf available for tasting— free . In addition you can purchase bottles at winery prices, unlike at many places in town. I have made some fabulous discoveries here, including the very first vintage of Domaine St. Préfert —I fell in love with it. (Or as we say here, it was a coup de coeur . ) The staff is excellent, friendly and helpful; they are quite knowledgeable about the wines sold and some speak English. For wine lovers spending time in this tasting room is like being a kid in a candy store!  So much choice! The atmosphere is very convivial, bringing together wine overs from all over the world.  Occasionally a generous visitor will purchase a bottle of their favorite wine to share with the rest of the visitors.

provence-emotional-escapes

This is truly a “ not –to-be-missed ” stop in Châteauneuf .   As always it is polite to purchase a bottle.

Vinadea can ship your wine purchases within France, and to the US, except to the states of  Mass, Pennsylvania, and Utah.  (Wineries will not ship to the US because of potential competition with their importers.)  Shipping is not possible to the UK or Belgium. Price of Châteauneuf du Pape wines start at about €16 per bottle, and go up from there. There are also some Côtes du Rhône wines for sale, but not for tasting.

They are open every day of the year except Christmas, but close at lunch, around 12:30 to 1:30 or 2:00, depending on the season.

The shop is located in the center of the village.  On foot from the Tourist Office,  turn right past the Café Mule de Pape and go down the street Maréchal Foch. The shop is located at the top of the double stairway on the left side of the  street. The stairway is right next to the horrible public WC.

Jancis Robinson

Roula Khalaf, Editor of the FT, selects her favourite stories in this weekly newsletter.

My first wine encounter after a stint in hospital with double pneumonia was a lunch with fellow members of a group known as “The 1950 Babes”, although only three of us are female. This informal band of UK wine professionals born in 1950, notching up about 500 years of wine experience between us, meets about once a year to chew the cud and share far too many special bottles.

It includes Allan Cheesman who, as head of Sainsbury’s wine department in the 1980s and 1990s, was the country’s most powerful professional wine buyer in an era when supermarkets really cared about the quality and range of bottles on their shelves. Tim How turned Majestic Wine into a successful public company. Tim Littler of Whitwhams was the UK’s most successful international fine wine trader then.

Bill Rolfe was marketing director of the Unwins chain, the sort of high-street wine retailer that has now largely disappeared. In 2002, he jumped to the more future-proof field of wine supply. Tony Stebbings is a fifth-generation wine merchant who has worked in most aspects of the wine trade but also ended up as an importer, selling millions of cases of wine. Like Stebbings, Anthony Sykes spent most of his career importing wine, buying Corney & Barrow’s cash cow Ernst Gorge Wine Shippers in 1994.

Joanna Delaforce was born into the Delaforce port family and, after a few years working outside the wine trade, bowed to the inevitable in 1983. Since then, she has been the “first female . . . .” in several capacities. Like me, Rosemary George is now a self-employed Master of Wine and wine writer, having written 14 books. She started out as a secretary at The Wine Society and worked at wine importers Sichel, where fellow 1950 Babe David Hunter spent 25 years, ending up as purchasing director. Many wine students in the UK will know him best in his subsequent role as an educator at the Wine & Spirit Education Trust.

I asked them all how they feel the wine world today compares with the one they started out in. With only one exception, and completely independently, they volunteered that the main difference is that the overall quality and range of wine has improved immeasurably. Only Tim Littler had another suggestion for how the wine world has improved: “From a fine-wine broker’s perspective, that there is now instant access to all available fine wines due to the advent of the internet.” But then he also argued that this is why things are worse, because it has “made brokers less relevant and put downward pressure on margins”. Bad news for brokers is of course good news for us consumers.

The other Babes’ observations about how the wine world is worse than it used to be were more varied. Cheesman, whose buying mantra was “firm but fair”, laments that, today, supermarket wine buyers are more likely to buy to a price than on quality and that long-term relationships with suppliers are no longer cultivated: “We were not in business to put suppliers out of business!” In his words, “Suppliers could have one Rolls-Royce but not two.”

Rosemary George regrets “the internationalisation of some flavours. You can find Chardonnay or Cabernet Sauvignon all over the world, and so many of those wines lack a sense of place.” Stebbings is similarly shocked that people today order wine by grape variety without having a clue where it’s from.

I asked everyone what they felt was their greatest disappointment and greatest achievement. Delaforce, Cheesman and Hunter all regret their lack of formal qualification, especially the last two, who got close to becoming Masters of Wine. George cited becoming one of the first women to pass the MW as her greatest achievement.

For some, their chief regret was not snapping up what now look like irresistible wine bargains, especially the classed growth bordeaux that was offloaded en masse, chiefly by British brewers who overbought in the early 1970s. Rosemary George regretted “not buying more bottles of 1970 Château Palmer with Sichel’s generous staff discount” (the Sichel family are part-owners of Palmer). Sykes cited as his primary regret “not marrying a Puligny-Montrachet grower’s daughter”.

Cheesman regards his greatest achievement as introducing own-label wines (which, at one stage, constituted 95 per cent of all the wine sold by Sainsbury’s) and “demystifying and popularising wine”. He started out just as the UK joined the Common Market (now EU), when wine sold in the UK became much more likely to be bottled at source rather than in the UK, with much more rigorous authenticity.

Hunter, when working for Sichel, is justifiably proudest of blending Blue Nun so that it was a consistent, superior example of that much-traduced commodity Liebfraumilch. As Cheesman pointed out, when we all started out, the wine landscape was populated by the likes of Blue Nun, Mateus Rosé, Lutomer Riesling (which wasn’t Riesling) and Bull’s Blood (which, of course, had nothing to do with either bulls or blood).

Today we all drink much better, as witness the wines at our lunch: Dom Pérignon 2010 in both magnum and bottle; Ch Brown Blanc 2019 Pessac-Léognan; magnum of Dom des Malandes, Fourchaume Premier Cru 2005 Chablis; Dom Courbis, Les Sabarottes 2004 Cornas; Ch Clerc Milon 2000 Pauillac; magnum of Ch Léoville Barton 1986 St Julien; Army & Navy bottling of Taylor’s 1963 port; and a whiff of Delamain cognac.

Only two of the Babes have severed professional links with the wine trade. How sails between fulfilling several chairmanships. Littler now runs a luxury train-tour company. His colourful career includes some fine tales about handing over cash for Crimean wine treasures to a distinctly dodgy middleman with a gold-embossed Cadillac. All very different from filling out a supermarket purchase order.

The 1950 Babes recommend . . . good-value buys

I asked the group which wines they consider worth seeking out today

Cheesman — Languedoc and Roussillon offer fabulous wines across the colour spectrum, from the Rhône valley to the Spanish border

Delaforce — subregions of France and eastern Europe

George — the Languedoc and also Roussillon

How — we entertained 25 friends for dinner on my last birthday and drank Saladini Pilastri Pecorino (£11.99 Majestic) and Chapoutier Belleruche Côtes du Rhône (£12.99 Majestic)

Hunter — Riesling, particularly German Riesling

Littler — Domaine de la Bongran Viré Clessé (£34 Huntsworth Wine) and Apothic Wines Inferno (not currently available in the UK)

Rolfe — wines from southern Italy

Stebbings — Côtes du Rhône, particularly wines from villages other than Châteauneuf du Pape

Sykes — northern Rhône wines and southern burgundies. Muscadet has experienced a revival as a serious player
