Gornergrat Railway: A Complete Guide To Seeing the Matterhorn By Train

Robert Marmion

The Gornergrat Railway is the train in Switzerland that will take you to see the Matterhorn. Starting in Zermatt, Switzerland, this cogwheel railway will take you up to 3,100 meters and a perfect panoramic view of the Matterhorn and it’s surroundings.

Details of the Gornergrat Bahn

The Gornergrat Railway is a relatively short ride at only 33 minutes. You’ll have near constant views of the Matterhorn as you ascend the line. The best views of the Matterhorn from the Gornergrat train are on the right side of the train going up the mountain.

Gornergrat Railway

The Gornergrat Railway is open 365 days a year and the train runs from early morning until after sunset. The train will be closed if there is bad weather or really strong winds.

The busiest time on the Gornergrat railway is between 9:30 and 11:30 am.

Unlike the Jungfrau Bahn, there is no railway that goes inside the Matterhorn or to the top of the Matterhorn. The Gornergrat Bahn is the closest railway to the Matterhorn and will give you spectacular views of it and the surrounding area.

How Much Does The Gornergrat Railway Cost

Round trip ticket prices on the Gornergrat Railway are CHF 126 in summer and CHF 88 in low season. If you have purchased the Swiss travel pass, which is recommended, the tickets will be half price. Tickets can be purchased online or when you get to the station. If you would like someone else to handle all of your train and vacation bookings in Europe, contact Rail Bookers (affiliate).

We recommend waiting until you get to the station if you are visiting in winter, as bad weather could change your plans in this region. On our most recent trip, a snow storm with strong winds closed the train when we were planning to ride it.

How to Guarantee the best view of the Matterhorn

If you are visiting during high season and want to guarantee yourself the best view of the Matterhorn, purchase a priority boarding ticket. A Gornergrat Railway priority boarding ticket will allow you to get on the train 3 minutes earlier than other passengers so you can get a seat on the right side of the train.

Priority boarding tickets cost 10 CHF in the morning and 5 CHF in the afternoon, with children under 6 being free. This is a cheap way to ensure a great view and is recommended if seeing the Matterhorn on the way up is a must for you.

You can purchase the priority boarding ticket online .

Where to stay when visiting the Matterhorn

You’ll depart on the Gornergrat Railway from Zermatt, Switzerland. The easiest place to stay when visiting the Matterhorn is in downtown Zermatt. From Zermatt you can simply walk to the station whenever you want and board the train.

Zermatt Switzerland

You might find the hotel prices in Zermatt to be quite high during your visit. It is an incredibly popular upscale ski resort town and weekends and holidays drive the prices up more than most cities.

If prices are high during your visit, a good alternative to staying in Zermatt is staying in the neighboring town of Tasch, Switzerland. We’ve stayed at the Hotel Elite Tasch and loved our room and the hotel. Prices were half of the price we would have paid in Zermatt, but it still cost us $130 per night.

Tasch Station

There is a grocery store in Tasch, where you can buy food to make lunch or dinner, which will save you time and money.

From Tasch you can easily take the Zermatt Shuttle train, which takes you directly to the Zermatt Station. The Zermatt Shuttle train is included with your Swiss Travel Pass if you have it.

Zermatt is a car free town, so if you are driving, you’ll only be able to drive as far as Tasch, and then take the Zermatt Shuttle from there.

Zermatt Shuttle

Zermatt Shuttle trains leave about every 20 minutes from the Tasch station.

Zermatt Shuttle

Getting to the Train

To find the Gornergrat Station in Zermatt you’ll walk off the platform of the Zermatt Shuttle, turn left and cross the street, where the station for the Gornergrat Train is located on the left. The Gornergrat Bahn train leaves from the yellow building across the street from the main train station in Zermatt. There are signs pointing you towards the Gornergrat Bahn station once you exit the Zermatt station.

How much time do you need to see the Matterhorn

We recommend staying in the area for 2 nights, but 3 would be even better and give you the ability to change plans in case of bad weather. For this reason we think Tasch is the best home base, as it offers better pricing and allows for a longer stay.

If you try to visit Zermatt in one night you’ll have a few potential problems, but it is possible.

Riding the Gornergrat Railway and the Glacier Express

Most people that ride the Glacier Express to or from Zermatt like to pair the experience with a ride on the Gornergrat, which makes sense as the stations are right across the street from each other.

If you ride the Glacier Express into Zermatt, you could stay the night in Tasch or Zermatt and then ride the Gornergrat the next day after you wake up.

Zermatt Station and Gornergrat Railway Station

If you are riding the Glacier Express from Zermatt, you’ll need to get in early enough the day before to check into your hotel and store your bags, before riding the Gornergat that afternoon. Then simply wake up the next day and board the Glacier Express.

We’ve done it this way with success in the past, as we arrived in Tasch at 1pm and checked into the Hotel Elite Tasch and were to the Gornergrat Train by 1:30pm. That gave us the rest of the night to explore before boarding the Glacier Express in the morning. We took a chance since it was off season, and they did let us check in early, which was incredible.

Which time of year is best for the Gornergrat Train

The prettiest time of year to ride the Gornergrat and see the Matterhorn is February. In this late winter timeframe you’ll have a snow covered landscape and the views will be amazing. If you don’t like the cold weather, summer is also a great time to see the Matterhorn. Your views will be different, and you won’t see as much snow, but the contrast with the green landscape will be very pretty.

The 6 Best Ways to See the Matterhorn in Zermatt – A Complete Guide

By: Author Sophie Pearce

If you’re looking for the best ways to see the Matterhorn in Zermatt, keep reading.

There are countless reasons to visit Zermatt all year round.

In Winter, it turns into a wonderland of snow-capped chateaus, a magnificent ski resort to try out the slopes, and the buzz of Apres-ski.

In Summer, you can surround yourself with snow-capped mountains, green hills pocketed with flowers, and countless walks which look like something straight out of a scene in The Sound of Music.

The best reason, in my humble opinion, is to meet the magnificent Matterhorn! This iconic mountain is better known as the Toblerone mountain which is featured on their triangular packaging.

It is a sight to behold when you’re in southern Valais. Its jagged peak is rather dramatic in all seasons if you can catch a glimpse of it.

You have to be quick though, the clouds come in rather quickly! Here are the best ways to see the Matterhorn in Zermatt.

Best ways to see the Matterhorn in Zermatt

A quick overview of Zermatt in Switzerland

The picturesque Swiss town of Zermatt is a car-free resort.

So, if you are approaching by car from Bern or Zurich, you will need to park up and catch the Zermatt shuttle through to the town.

The main location to do this is Täsch.

Don’t worry about finding a parking space, the car park is massive!

From here, you can catch the shuttle which runs around every 30 minutes back and forth.

Parking is quite reasonably priced for the day and if you’re staying for longer there are parking packages to invest in.

When you’re on the shuttle, you will get some great views of the valley and mountains if you sit on the left.

When you arrive in Zermatt, the station is ideally placed next to the Gornergratt Bahn, which will transport you to meet the Matterhorn!

Although it is a car-free resort, there are numerous Bolero’s to take you through the town or taxi you back to your chalet after a night on the town.

When is the best time to visit the Matterhorn in Zermatt?

If you’re flexible with your itinerary, you should try and go up on a crystal clear blue sky day!

This will mean that you get a full view of the mountain. But even with the best intentions, you will get wisps of clouds.

The clouds come in quickly in the afternoon and so try to go up as early in the morning so you can get the best views!

5 ways to see the Matterhorn in Zermatt!

Option 1: take the gornergrat bahn.

The most popular way to see the Matterhorn in Zermatt is to take the train up to the Gornergrat Bhan.

Trains run every 30 minutes and a spectacularly busy, to get some great views make sure you sit on the right-hand side of the train.

The main station is located around 1,604 metres above sea level and as you ascend, you have some amazing views of the mountain range!

Gornergrat Bhan train

2. Take in the view from Gornergrat Bahn

When you arrive at the station, this is where you can get the best views of the Matterhorn. You’ll definitely feel the altitude in your legs!

But, it’s all worth it for the stunning views of the mountains, glaciers, and the magnificent Matterhorn.

You can get your official pictures taken with it by dressing as a historic mountain climber.

Years ago, when I first visited here, there were Great Bernards with whiskey barrels also but no more – they’re now edited in!

There are plenty of platforms to take your own pictures though and the background really is incredible. People will think you’ve been photoshopped in!

Gornergrat Bahn Glacier

3. Drink a beer while overlooking the Matterhorn

There is plenty to do when you arrive at the Gornergrat Bahn summit, the obvious one being to take in the amazing panoramic views.

If you would prefer to sit and relax in the setting, there is also a cafe selling the most amazing apple strudel I ate while I was in Switzerland and the portions don’t come up small!

You can also sample their own bier speciale, Calanda.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

4. On the hike from Gornergrat to Zermatt

There are three options for you to get back down to Zermatt;

  • Get the train all the way back down
  • Use your ticket to stop at the platforms along the way
  • Get walking!

The great thing about buying a ticket on the Gornergrat Bahn is that you can stop off at all stations along the way.

So if you just wanted to stop off and get a different view of the mountains, that’s okay.

Also, you could just walk a little of the way or between stations – so it’s completely flexible.

One of the highlights of walking is you get to see their amazing lakes which should, on a clear, sunny and completely non-windy day give you a clear reflection of the peak of the Matterhorn.

But, as I said earlier, the clouds come in quickly! Despite this, the walk down is stunning and there are some cute cafes, bars, and hotels to visit on your way down.

The best way to see the Matterhorn in Zermatt!

5. In the Backdrop of Zermatt

After you have been up the Gornergrat and come back down, you’re probably exhausted if you did some hiking on the Bergweg.

Zermatt is the perfect place to come back to as it’s packed with restaurants and cafe’s in the compact city.

Plus, you can see the Matterhorn in the backdrop if it’s a clear day.

However, if nothing can stop you from spending your Swiss Francs there are plenty of shops to bag your souvenirs!

You can buy anything from designer watches, yummy swiss chocolate, and the ultimate super tourist cowbells!

Watch out for the Horse and Carriages, busy transporting lucky guests to the Grand Hotel Zermatterhof!

Zermatt Matterhorn Viewpoint

Lastly, there is a way to get a beautiful view of the village of Zermatt with the Matterhorn in the backdrop.

It’s a viewpoint at the top of Mürini Hill that takes about 15 minutes from the central station.

There is a lot of steps required to visit but it’s so worth it for these spectacular views. Especially at sunset.

Those are 6 ways to see the Matterhorn in Zermatt

As I was making my way back to Täsch on the shuttle, I couldn’t help but think back to what an amazing place Zermatt was.

Visiting here is a must when you come to Switzerland and it will definitely be a trip that will stick with you.

The Matterhorn is such an incredible mountain and coming up close to meet was just awesome. Make sure you add this one to your bucket list!

You've missed the **ultimate** way to view the Matterhorn in Zermatt... From a Tandem Paragliding flight.

It's really the only activity here that is available to *almost* everyone (you need to be able to follow instructions on the take off and have enough fitness to run some steps). Skiing, Mountain Climbing, Rock Climbing, Mountain Biking, Snowboarding, etc. all require a decent amount of fitness and "go for it" attitude. Being a passenger on a Swiss Tandem Paraglider is available to a much wider group of people.

Disclaimer: I'm a professional tandem pilot here in Zermatt (have lived here most of my life) and have flown passengers from the ages of 3 to 94.

After 10 years as a partner with FlyZermatt (the largest operator here), I've started my own company. Have a look and say hi: https://swissparaglide.com

Grand Train Tour of Switzerland

Discover the highlights of switzerland by train..

The Grand Train Tour of Switzerland combines all the very best train routes in Switzerland. Naturally included, and not to be missed, are the canton of Valais, Zermatt and the world-famous Glacier Express.

From Geneva to the Matterhorn

The journey begins in Geneva travelling towards Martigny – the gate to the alpine passes of the Great St. Bernhard and Forclaz. Martigny is a town with a 2000-year history behind it. The train trip continues through the Rhone Valley to Brig, awarded the ‘Alpine City 2008’ prize. The famous Stockalper Castle lies at the foot of the Simplon Pass and is a hub for many excursions. From Visp or Brig the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway brings its passengers through the snow-covered Nikolai Valley to Zermatt, the village with the most iconic mountain in the world, the Matterhorn.

Excursion tips

Onwards and upwards from Zermatt. If you want to see the Matterhorn from its very best side then a trip with the Gornergrat Railway is the next leg of your journey, from which you will see the Matterhorn and the breath-taking views for the entire 30-minute ride. Gornergrat lies at 3,089 metres above sea level and is the perfect starting point for panoramic excursions and activities. Discover the beauty of the region on a hike or with a mountain bike or just enjoy a great meal with a scenic backdrop. There are various restaurants on the peak or along the routes, which cater to every taste. Don’t forget to take that amazing selfie with the Matterhorn in the background!

Glacier Express

Zermatt is not only famous for its special mountain but is also the starting or finishing point for the equally famous Glacier Express, a panorama train that yearly fascinates thousands of travellers. From the tranquil village in the Matter Valley the train sets off towards the charming region of Goms and then to Andermatt, another mountain resort, located at the foot of the Oberalp Pass. Here the boundaries of the cantons Uri and Graubünden meet. The trip over the pass is surely one of the highlights on the Glacier Express journey. Arriving on the other side the views are equally impressive. Look out for the Benedictine monastery in Disentis, the striking Rhine Gorge, the scattered forts in the Domleschg valley and the Rhaetian Railway’s Albula line, which has been added to the UNESCO World Heritage list.

matterhorn train tour

Day by day itinerary | Inclusions | Routing

Travel via the scenic routes to the highlights of Switzerland

Combine medieval Lucerne with the famous Chapel Bridge, Interlaken, the gateway to the three mighty mountains Eiger, Moench and Jungfrau and the car free village Zermatt at the foot of the spectacular Matterhorn. The highlights of this Switzerland tour are the excursions to Mt. Titlis, Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe and Gornergrat with the best view of the Matterhorn as well as 29 other 4,000 m peaks.

This tour shows you the highlights of Switzerland and the Swiss Alps. You will scale the most famous mountain peaks. Mt. Titlis with views over the mountains in central Switzerland will be the first stop. Then you will visit the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe, the highest railway station in Europe, where you get to see the longest glacier of the Alps, the Aletsch glacier with 22 km length. Finally the most famous mountain in Switzerland, actually on the border to Italy, the Matterhorn will be visited. Not the mountain itself because the summit is only accessible to experienced mountaineers, but the Gornergrat at almost 3,000 m. It is from this viewpoint, where the greatest number of 4,000 m peaks can be seen on a clear day.

Day 1 – Arrival in Switzerland

Whether from any of the 3 Swiss international airports (Zurich/Zürich, Basle/Basel or Geneva/Geneve) or by train from Germany, France, Austria or Italy, the package includes the train trip from Swiss international airports or the border station to Lucerne/Luzern and at the end back to the airport or border station, so no need to buy any additional train ticket. All travel within Switzerland is included! And as an extra benefit, with this package tour all further excursions by train, mountain train, cable car, boat or bus can be obtained for half the price.

When you have arrived in Lucerne there may certainly be some time to explore the beautiful city. Of course you can visit the historic district with the famous Chapel bridge. However, also the narrow streets are worthwhile a stroll and above all, the Lion Monument is a must see and also close by. Next to the Lion Monument, you can visit the Glacier Garden. Lucerne was covered by a glacier 10,000 years ago and the traces are still visible. The city is beautifully located on the Lake Lucerne and therefore a boat cruise in the afternoon is also highly recommended. In summer there are evening cruises so you can enjoy the sunset.

Overnight in Lucerne

Day 2 – Excursion to Mt. Titlis

From Lucerne you will take the train to the mountain monastery village Engelberg. Upon arrival there, and a short walk to the valley station, you board the gondola which takes you up to the Truebsee and on to Stand and finally the revolving Titlis rotair cable car (the first of its kind) takes you up to Mt. Titlis (3,020 m).

This glaciated mountain peak offers great views, for example you can see even the mountains near the Matterhorn, but you have to look closely and use a binocular. For a spectacular, close-up insight into a glacier, why don’t you visit the glacier cave. Alternatively you could ride the Ice Flyer chairlift. Get your thrills on the Titlis Cliff Walk, a spectacular suspension bridge at a height of 3,041 m. On the way back we suggest a stopover at the Truebsee station. Consequently you could undertake a hike around it. This is a good possibility to stretch your legs. Also the town of Engelberg is worth a visit on the way back. There is a monastery, founded in 1120, and it can be visited.

Titlis rotair cable car with Lake Truebsee and Engelberg, one of the highlights of Switzerland

Day 3 – Lucerne-Interlaken

After the Swiss breakfast buffet (included with all overnight) a short walk or taxi ride will bring you to the station. There, the Luzern Interlaken Express, the red train which is part of the GoldenPass Line, will be waiting for you, however, but don’t be late as the Swiss are famous for their punctuality. The train will leave on time!

After the departure you will enjoy the first part of the GoldenPass Line in the fully air conditioned panoramic train. Why don’t you enjoy a hot or cold meal, a beverage or a snack? There is a restaurant car located in the middle of the train. On your trip to Interlaken you will pass by 5 lakes. Especially the last one, Lake Brienz , is extremely beautiful.

After the 2 hours ride, you will arrive at your final destination for today, Interlaken Ost (Ost means east in english, Interlaken has 2 stations, East and West). After check-in at your hotel you can explore Interlaken with its famous “Hoeheweg” (promenade) facing the Jungfrau mountain. Another possibility is a ride with the Harder funicular to the viewpoint above Interlaken. You can get a good overview of Interlaken and see why it is called this way, Interlaken is Latin for „between the lakes“.

Overnight in Interlaken

Day 4 – Excursion Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe

Today’s full day excursion takes you up to a unique, high alpine glacier world. You will reach Europe’s highest altitude railway station (3,454 m) aboard the legendary Jungfrau Railway. This mountain railway was built back in the late 19th century and opened on August 1, 1912. Originally the engineers planned to reach the summit of the Jungfrau (4,158 m), however in 1912 the financials did not permit to go on with the construction and consequently World War I put an end to the project. Now the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe is the highest railway station and the highlight of every tour through Switzerland.

On December 5, 2020 the new Eiger Express opened and permits breathtaking views to the Eiger North Face. This very steep wall is one of the most difficult climbs in the Alps. It was the greatest climbing challenge in the 1930’s. Numerous stories about these climbs and fatal accidents can be told.

jungfraujoch - top of europe with aletschhorn

Glacial world at the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe

At the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe you can see the longest glacier of the Alps, the Aletsch Glacier, 22 km long! For instance, you can hike over the glacier to the nearby Moenchsjoch hut. Don’t miss the view from the Sphinx terrace, which can be reached by one of the fastest elevators in Switzerland. Subsequently, you can pay a visit to the Ice Palace and go inside the glacier and see the sculptures, in order to complete your visit.

Day 5 – Interlaken-Zermatt

After you have had an impressive day at the Jungfraujoch – Top of Europe it is time to continue to Zermatt. First you will ride along Lake Thun, then, after a change of trains in Spiez, you will continue through the 34 km long Loeschberg base tunnel, which is Switzerland’s second longest, to Visp. Here you will take the Matterhorn Gotthard Railway train and eventually reach Zermatt on the foot of Switzerland’s most famous mountain, the Matterhorn. Zermatt is a car free village. All transport within the village is done by electric cars or sometimes even horse carriages. Above all, Zermatt is well known because of the Matterhorn, which was climbed for the first time in 1865. The first climb, however was overshadowed by the tragedy on the descent when 4 of the 7 climbers died because one of them slipped. When visiting the Matterhorn Museum, try to find the broken rope…

Day 6 – Zermatt-Gornergrat

The Matterhorn reflects in the Riffelsee near the Gornergrat

The Matterhorn reflects in the Riffelsee near the Gornergrat

The cogwheel railway takes you to the Gornergrat (3,089 m). This magnificent viewpoint, not only has one of the best views of the Matterhorn, but also shows you the greatest collection of the highest glacier covered peaks of Switzerland. Take your time to enjoy the view, it’s worth it. You can interrupt your journey at any station, for example to do a small hike to the famous Riffelsee. A wonderful excursion to finish your Highlights of Switzerland tour.

Overnight in Zermatt

Day 7 – Individual Departure

It is time to say goodbye. However, even the journey back to the airport or border station follows through the beautiful Swiss landscapes. Depending your destination, we recommend a stopover in the city of Geneva, Bern or Zurich. Because all train stations in Switzerland are conveniently located in the centre of each Swiss city, you can easily go for a quick tour of the city. You can store your luggage safely in the luggage lockers, that you find at almost every station.

However, you can also add another tour, for example the Lakes and Glaciers tour. But you can also just stay a few extra days in Switzerland.

You can start or end the tour at any Swiss airport or border station. In winter (end December to April, the 2 overnights in Zermatt will be replaced by either, Brig, Visp or other nearby town.

Gornergrat & Zermatt from Zurich

Zermatt & gornergrat summit day tour from zurich.

Visit with me Zermatt and the Matterhorn, Switzerland’s most famous mountain, on this day tour from Zurich. We cross the Alps from north to south by train either over the scenic Lötschberg mountain line or on the direct route (your choice). We arrive in Zermatt at the latest by noon. You can enjoy up to six hours in Zermatt. That gives you plenty of time to admire the gorgeous views, discover the village, have lunch, and for the one-of-a-kind ride on the Matterhorn railway to the Gornergrat, from where you have a fabulous view of the Matterhorn, the Gorner Glacier, and the Monte Rosa, Switzerland’s highest mountain. Afterward, we return to Zurich on the direct route through the Lötschberg base tunnel. If you desire a shorter tour or more time in Zermatt we can take the direct route both ways.

Spectacular ride to the Gornergrat with the Matterhorn railway

Lötschberg mountain line (with the scenic tour variant)

A scenic train ride through Switzerland

No rush: up to 6 hours in Zermatt

Winter: December 1 - April 30

As a sole proprietor with a capacity of one tour per day, I can be fully booked far in advance.

Zermatt & Gornergrat tour from Zurich

First we travel by train to Zermatt.

In Zermatt we board the Gornergrat mountain railway. On busy days, we get priority boarding so that we can board ahead of everyone else and select the seats with the best views of the Matterhorn.

This mountain railway will take us on a spectacular journey to one of the best vantage points for the Matterhorn, the Gornergrat.

The views from this summit, located at 3,090 m/ 10,140 ft. above sea level, are impressive. On a clear day, you have perfect views of the Monte Rosa massif. See the Dufour Peak, the highest peak in Switzerland, the Matterhorn, and the Gorner glacier.

You will have plenty of time to relax, enjoy the panorama, and have lunch. When you are ready, we start the descent back to Zermatt.

In Zermatt, you can have some free time for shopping or early dinner before we head back to Zurich.

For the train ride fron Zurich to Zermatt we have two options:

The direct route to Zermatt, through the Lötschberg base tunnel, is ideal if you want to maximize your time in Zermatt and at the Gornergrat, or if you want to have a shorter tour duration.  During the winter months, it's the only available option, due to the short daylight hours.

During the summer months we can take the BLS Lötschberg mountain line on the outbound which is more scenic than the direct route. Enjoy the fantastic views of the Kander valley in comfortable first-class carriages.

In Brig, we change to another regional train, which will bring us to Visp. In Visp we make another change to a train to Zermatt. We arrive around noon.

- Return to any centrally located Hotel, Apartment, or Airbnb after the tour

- Use of a mobile hotspot with unlimited data (Speed: 4G)

Please regard that your lunch is not included in the tour price.

During lunch hours:

à la carte restaurant at the Gornergrat (summit) * +

self-service restaurant at the Gornergrat (summit)

Outside of regular lunch hours:

We can have a late lunch after descending from the Gornergrat. There are various restaurants in Zermatt.

Quick lunch:

There are bakeries, convenience shops, sandwich outlets, a sausage stand, and a fast food outlet in Zermatt, where you can grab a bite, either before or after the visit to the Gornergrat peak.

International food options:

McDonalds (at the village of Zermatt)

(online menu not available)

Restaurant Golden India (at the village of Zermatt) *

+ For restaurants marked with a plus (+), reservations are recommended. I'm happy to reserve a table for you.

Restaurant menus, prices, and options are subject to change.

The restaurant menus are hosted as a PDF file on the restaurants' websites.

The activity level is moderate: frequent changes of trains (the changes are easy but require some walking and steps to get in and out of the trains), a walk through Zermatt at your discretion, a walk at the Gornergrat at your discretion

If you're staying outside of the pick-up area, I can meet you at the central train station of Zurich.

Weather forecast

I use the weather forecasts provided by the Federal Office of Meteorology and SRF (Swiss Radio and Television).

With the link below, you can check the weather forecast at any time by yourself. The forecast is available for the next five days.

Operability

This tour can run in any weather condition except during a storm. During a storm, the Gornergrat railway has often to halt operations or run only on parts of the route for safety reasons. If there is a storm with gale-force winds in the forecast, I need to cancel the tour. On rare occasions, there may be a cancellation due to landslides, avalanches, and other natural forces or the risk thereof. I will fully refund the deposit in this case.

Your options in case of bad weather (tour specific)

early bird or standard rates

If you booked an early bird or standard rate, then a free cancelation is not possible anymore once a reliable weather forecast is published, as I need to purchase train tickets in advance for these rates.

You can choose a different tour/mountain peak in an area with better weather (if available, the price of the newly selected tour will apply).

We can do the tour as planned despite the weather.

I also have a few full-day train tours. For example, the Glacier Express route on local trains tour. These tours are ideal on rainy days as we are for most of the day inside and not exposed to the weather, and as on rainy days the views are usually better at lower altitudes. Further, this tour has a lower tour price as it doesn't require any expensive mountain railway tickets.

If not having perfect weather is a dealbreaker, you can cancel by forfeiting the deposit.

Swiss Travel Pass rates

If you have booked a Swiss Travel Pass rate you can cancel the booking up to 12 hours before departure for a full refund of the deposit. Hence if the weather forecast looks bad you are free to cancel the tour free of charge if you desire.

All other options which are published under the early bird and standard rate section are also available to you.

This itinerary is only an example. The schedule can vary due to various factors such as the season, the day of the week, construction work, service, and schedule changes.

The exact departure and return time depends on the pick-up/drop-off location.

You can spontaneously extend or shorten the visit to the Gornergrat summit.

You can spontaneously shorten the visit to Zermatt. We have a connection back to Zurich every half-hour. The connection at 6.37 PM is the latest possible departure time from Zermatt.

You can spontaneously extend or shorten the visit to the Gornergrat summit. The train between the Gornergrat summit and the village of Zermatt runs every 24 minutes or 48 minutes (depending on the season).

After check-in and rest, meet your private guide at the hotel lobby for a comprehensive tour of Moscow by car. Visit the starkly contrasting Theatre Square to see the stunning Bolshoi Theatre, pass Tverskaya Street, the city’s main boulevard and home to the landmark Yeleseyevskiy Grocery Store.

You’ll enjoy a panoramic drive along the Moskva River, where a huge, controversial state of Peter the Great was erected. Pass by the legendary Gorky Park and the White House before a stop at the architecturally stunning Novodevichy Convent, and the observation platform at Sparrow Hills, for a bird’s eye view over this staggering megalopolis.

Day 2 Red Square and Kremlin

After breakfast at the hotel, your guide will take you on a walking tour of the historical city centre. Stroll through the Red Square, the hub of cultural life in Moscow, with its elaborate ‘stone flower’ fountain and fantasy-like St Basil’s Cathedral – a postcard-perfect symbol of the nation. Admire the grandiose façade of GUM, the city’s most luxurious shopping centre, and visit Alexander’s Garden, with its eternal flame and the chance to watch a changing of the guards.

Break for lunch before continuing on a tour of the Kremlin and Armoury Chamber, famous of its collection of tsarist fashion, with regalia such as jewel-encrusted crowns, orbs and sceptres as well as arms and armour, exotic gifts from the leaders of faraway lands, and an illustrious case of Imperial Faberge eggs.

As an option* spend an evening on a sumptuous dinner cruise, taking in the stunning sights and city lights of this mesmerising metropolis by night.

Day 3 Metro and Arbat Street

Start a day with a tour of Metro, stopping on the way to marvel at some of the most elaborately decorated stations of the world-famous Moscow subway system. Take a stroll along Old Arbat street - the most famous street in Moscow. Through the centuries Arbat used to be one of the most bohemian places in Moscow. Today Arbat is a promenade full of small cozy cafes and street life.

The afternoon is free for you to either enjoy the rest of the day on your own or choose among optional excursions to explore more of Moscow. Visit the Tretyakov Gallery or Pushkin State Museum to admire Russian art. Join locals for a stroll at the Gorky or VDNH park.

Visit beautiful Kolomeskoye Estate or Izmailovo Kremlin, or spend a day exploring the beautiful city of the Golden Ring (Russian province) - Sergiev Posad. In the evening you will be transferred to the airport for your departure to your next destination.

NEWS RELEASE: Board Members, Public Take Tour of High-Speed Train Interior Concepts and Get Up Close Look at Station Models for First Time

March 1, 2024

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – All aboard, including the Board! The California High-Speed Rail Authority Board of Directors this week stepped off their usual dais and onto a figurative train platform, holding their meeting in the same room as the project’s preliminary trainset white mockups and early conceptual 3D station renderings —a special first-time opportunity for the public, no train tickets required.

Here’s what some at the Board meeting had to say:

“The station is the rebirth of Downtown Fresno … It is the focal point of the growth and revitalization of downtown. The economic implications are astounding.” – Authority Board Chairman Tom Richards “We talk a lot about the economic impact of the construction, but as we all know the operation of this system will last far longer and the impact, economically, will be seen for decades.” – Anthony Williams, Authority Board Member “It’s going to be a game changer for the Valley and for Fresno. I’m thankful we’re going to have the first high-speed station in the nation here in Downtown Fresno.” – Jerry Dyer, Mayor of Fresno “Our city has been hard at work preparing for the construction of a world-class high-speed rail station.” – Karen Goh, Mayor of Bakersfield “High-Speed Rail staff has done a really fantastic job of keeping us informed and involved in the process.” – Jason Waters, Deputy City Manager, City of Hanford “We are excited and in support of the high-speed rail, as well as the expansion of ACE and Amtrak.” – See Lee, CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of Merced County

Feedback received in focus groups from federal, state, and local officials and community partners, like students, disability rights advocates and more, will be part of the formal design requirements that will guide procurement of the actual trains and continued station design.

A graphic explaining the number of groups which toured the mockups (~300); the length of a trainset (672 feet); the number of seating options under consideration (5); the width of the aisles (32 inches); and the number of Community Based Organizations attending workshops on station designs, focused on mobility, activation and placemaking. For a more detailed description of this image please email info@hsr.ca.gov and reference the subject and date of this email: “NEWS RELEASE: Board Members, Public Tour HSR Train Interior Concepts & Station Models for First Time 2024-02-29”

Missed this opportunity? This is not the end of the line for the mockups. The public can also visit them at this summer’s California State Fair, held annually at Sacramento’s very own Cal Expo, while procurement advances.

And if you can’t visit then, you can watch a virtual tour here . The mockups are also featured in the Authority’s 2023 Top 10 Moments video , and in the Fall 2023 Construction Update .

In general, the interiors and their seating arrangements will have more space than most seating in airplanes – and no need to check a bag!

Federal grants awarded in 2023 will help fund train procurement, station design and continued construction in the Central Valley.

There are currently more than 25 active construction sites in California’s Central Valley, with the Authority having also fully environmentally cleared 422 miles of the high-speed rail program from the Bay Area to Los Angeles County.
