Costco travel makes traveling from London to Paris so easy!

Costco travel makes traveling from London to Paris so easy!

Listen up, jet-setter! If you’re thinking about planning a trip to the historic cities of London and Paris, get ready to be blown away. Picture this: historic landmarks, charming cobblestone streets, mouthwatering cuisine, and a whole lot of adventure. When I travel, I tend to like to a flexible itinerary. With Paris and London, you absolutely must have a plan. Everyone in the world is visiting these cities, and lines to all of the places we wanted to visit were long. You’ll want to book guided tours to all of the places you most want to visit.

Planning a trip like this can be OVERWHELMING. There is so much to do! To see! To try!

We made some great decisions, discovered some great tips – and yes, made some mistakes.

We recently visited London and Paris, and have some great insights on what to do – and what NOT to do – after our trip.

Costco Travel Deals

We used Costo Travel which made planning easy. From Myrtle Beach, we drove to Charlotte for the direct flight to Heathrow and direct return flight from Paris. The package included flights, transportation to and from the airport, the train from London and Paris, and a $600 activities credit to London. You can choose from several hotels and pick your room type. The package made it simple to book and a lot less overwhelming than trying to pick out accommodations all by ourselves.

From London to Paris: Tips for planning an Unforgettable Family Adventure

When planning a trip to London and Paris, here are some tips to ensure a memorable and well-organized experience:

  • Create an itinerary : Start by outlining your desired activities and attractions in both cities. Research and prioritize the must-see landmarks, museums, parks, and other attractions. This will help you make the most of your time and avoid missing out on anything important.
  • Book your landmark tickets in advance and book as many guided tours as possible: In London, we quickly realized that every place we wanted to visit was teeming with crowds and long lines. Plus, some of the places we wanted to visit (the Louvre in Paris, for example) had limited times and availability. In order to have a smoother and more enjoyable experience in Paris, we decided to book everything we could in advance, preferably with the assistance of a knowledgeable tour guide. We found that using Get Your Guide (a trusted affiliate partner of the GTG) made the process even more convenient. if you’re looking to avoid the chaos and embrace a stress-free journey, we highly recommend booking with Get Your Guide.
  • Book accommodations close to transportation : Both London and Paris are popular tourist destinations, with a million different options. I suggest finding a hotel close to a Hop On Hop Off tour, which make exploring each of the city’s major landmarks easy and entertaining. In London, we were a 3 minute walk from the bus stop. In Paris, it was a 20 minute walk and I wished we had been closer.
  • Research local transportation : Familiarize yourself with the public transportation systems in both cities. London has the famous Underground (also known as “the Tube”) which you can use Apple Pay from your watch or phone – but each person has to use their own card. Plus, Maps has a public transportation option which gives you specific directions for the Tube. Paris also has an extensive metro system. Plan your journeys and consider purchasing travel cards or passes to save money and simplify your transportation needs.
  • Research entry requirements : It looks us about 6 weeks to get our expedited passports, but I’ve heard it can take much longer so start the process well in advance if you need a passport. To take a child out of the country, both parents need to be present at the passport office. Check the latest entry requirements and any travel advisories before your trip to avoid any last-minute surprises.
  • Learn basic French phrases : While English is widely spoken in London, it’s always helpful to learn a few basic French phrases for your time in Paris. Locals appreciate the effort and it can enhance your overall experience. We were told by one tour guide to at least learn Bonjour to greet, Merci to say thank you, and s’il vous plaît for please.
  • Pack accordingly : Consider the weather and season when packing for your trip. London and Paris can have unpredictable weather, so it’s wise to pack layers and be prepared for both rain and sunshine. Don’t forget essential items such as comfortable walking shoes, adapters for electrical outlets, and a universal travel plug. The weather went from high 70s and 80s when I packed to high 60s by the time we arrived in London so my suitcase didn’t have the best mix for the weather. We went in August. (here’s my favorite travel garment bag that zips into a duffel bag, fyi.)
  • Carry a cross body bag: I carried my small travel camera (the Sony ZV1) , passports, wallet, phone, and added a tracking Apple tag in a little Lululemon camera crossbody bag .
  • Bring adapters I got a few adaptors from Amazon .
  • Explore local cuisine : Both cities offer a diverse selection of culinary delights. Prioritize trying local dishes and exploring various dining options, from traditional pubs in London to charming cafés and bistros in Paris. Don’t forget to indulge in iconic treats like fish and chips in London or croissants and macarons in Paris.
  • Stay flexible and enjoy the journey : While planning is crucial, don’t forget to leave some room for spontaneity and relaxation. Embrace the unique charm of both cities, immerse yourself in their culture, and allow yourself to experience unexpected discoveries along the way.

We recommend booking Tours & experiences with GetYourGuide.com

Get Your Guide is the easiest way to book guided tours and experiences. The app makes it super simple to find an experience and keep all of your tickets in one place. The tickets to attractions aren’t marked up, plus you have the option of adding walking tours and guides. Everything we booked through Get Your Guide was excellent. Highly recommend!

Passport Control : Before boarding the Eurostar, you will go through passport control. Make sure to have your passport ready and allow sufficient time for the process.

Have a fantastic time exploring London and Paris, y’all! Hope this was helpful.

How does Costco Travel work?

Can you use costco travel without a membership, is costco travel worth it, the downsides of costco travel, does costco travel offer travel insurance, the verdict: is costco travel a good deal.

The vacation packages featured by Costco Travel make a familiar, super-sized promise to Costco shoppers: You can save by prioritizing quality and buying in bulk. And for value-seeking travelers looking for a little bit of luxury, the wholesale giant delivers.

These vacation packages, which generally include posh accommodations, select meals and ground transportation, aren't available at bargain-barrel rates. But they're quick to book and competitively priced. For some, they might be the most cost-efficient ticket to a lavish getaway. Here’s everything you need to know about Costco Travel.

Costco Travel is a website that allows Costco members to purchase vacation packages, hotels, cruises and rental cars. These vacation packages, which can include posh accommodations, select meals and ground transportation, aren't available at bargain-barrel rates. But they're easy to book and competitively priced. For some, they might be the most cost-efficient ticket to a lavish getaway.

To book one of these vacation packages, you need to provide a Costco membership number at checkout. Memberships start at $60 a year, plus tax. With the Gold Star Executive membership, which costs $120 a year, you'll get additional Costco Travel benefits and 2% back (up to $1,000 in annual rewards) on qualifying Costco, Costco.com and Costco Travel purchases.

With a vacation package booked through Costco Travel — which also offers a la carte booking services for hotels, theme parks, car rentals and cruises — you can visit destinations like Rome, Paris, Cancun and many others.

Costco Travel Vacation Package-Poole

Book all the reservations at once

On the Costco Travel website, it's possible to book a full itinerary — even including the car ride from the airport to your hotel — in just a few minutes. For Ginka Poole of Nashville, Tennessee, this was a big draw.

“For a vacation, it’s good to kind of turn your brain off for a while and not have to worry,” says Poole, a travel blogger and photographer. “You pick your destination, and there aren’t too many other choices you need to make.”

She used the service to purchase a trip to St. Lucia , a Caribbean island, with her husband. The package she bought, which cost about $6,000 for a weeklong stay, included ground transportation, the resort stay, breakfast every day, first-class flights and a credit for a tour.

The benefits and accommodations are top-notch

Say you booked a seven-day vacation package from San Francisco to London and Paris for two. For $4,900, you'd get these goodies:

Nonstop economy flights

Transportation to and from the airport

A superior queen room in a London hotel with a daily English breakfast, three-course dinner for two, champagne afternoon tea service and an appointment with the hotel concierge

A $400 tour credit in London

Standard premier railway tickets from London to Paris

A premium room in a Paris hotel with a daily breakfast buffet

To be sure, you could easily book a similar trip for less than $4,900 if you nixed some of those extras. But you'd be hard-pressed to find the same level of amenities and benefits at a lower price on other travel aggregators.

When booking through Costco Travel, you can get 3% cash back on your purchase when you pay with your Costco Anywhere Visa® Card by Citi . If you don’t have that card, try using one that offers extra rewards for travel or flat-rate rewards.

Costco Travel Vacation Package-Kuttappan

Parita Kuttappan and her husband, Vishnu Kuttappan, visit the Haleakala Crater in Maui on a trip booked through Costco Travel. (Photo courtesy of Parita Kuttappan)

For Parita Kuttappan of Chicago — who booked a trip to Maui and Kauai for herself, her husband and her mother-in-law and father-in-law through Costco Travel — those fancy stays were worth the cost.

“Our accommodations were amazing — exactly what we thought we were going to be getting,” says Kuttappan, who founded the lifestyle blog My Inner Shakti. The resorts they stayed at were beautifully decorated, spacious and comfortable, she notes.

Itineraries are somewhat customizable

Vacation packages on Costco Travel come with a basic itinerary, but you generally handle the details yourself. After selecting your dates and destination, you can add flights, upgrade your room or make other tweaks. Then, it's up to you to plan daily activities.

In Kauai, “We took a helicopter tour of the island, and that was something I will never forget,” Kuttappan says, noting that she booked the tour separately from her package. “It was absolutely breathtaking. We got to see the canyon there, and the different waterfalls and an aerial view of the entire island, which was absolutely amazing.”

Here's why you might not want to book a vacation package through Costco Travel.

Costco Travel is not cheap

Vacation packages can offer a great value, but don't expect clearance prices. While the website features select packages for less than $499 per person, multiday trips with airfare generally run well over $1,000 per person.

"I would say [it’s] a great deal if you’re looking for convenience and willing to spend a little bit extra,” Kuttappan says, who also used the service to book a trip to Italy with her husband.

If trimming costs is your priority, you might be better off booking cheaper accommodations and flights elsewhere.

Not all expenses are included

Vacation packages often include some meals and benefits, but they don’t cover everything.

Poole and her husband were surprised to find they spent an average of about $400 a day purchasing alcohol, lunch and dinner at the resort in St. Lucia, she says. (Breakfast came included in their package.) While online reviewers noted that the food at the resort was expensive, Poole says she didn’t realize how costly it was until she got the final bill for their stay.

» MORE: Travelers, save on meals with these tidbits

“I do wish there would have been a little more information either from reviewers or from Costco themselves saying, 'This is what you’re going to spend,'” she says. To avoid surprises like these, ask the property you’re staying at about food costs beforehand and track expenses during your stay.

You’ll generally go to major hotels and resorts

Most of the hotels and resorts listed on Costco Travel are relatively large, often boasting hundreds of rooms. These properties can get you easy access to coffee, food and a gym — but they might not take you very far off the beaten path.

“You’re going to get a big resort. You’re not going to get a nice boutique hotel,” Poole says.

You cannot purchase a travel insurance policy through Costco Travel. However, you can purchase a trip insurance policy through Costco’s partner Zurich Travel Insurance. There are many plans to choose from, including those that offer trip cancellation , trip interruption , emergency medical coverage , travel delay , lost luggage coverage and more.

If you have a travel credit card that offers complimentary trip insurance , use that card to buy a Costco Travel vacation package so that you receive coverage for your trip.

» Learn more: How to find the best travel insurance

If you'd happily stay at a low-cost motel while traveling abroad if it meant saving money, booking a vacation package through Costco Travel just doesn't make sense. But for those who want to land a swanky hotel and ready-made itinerary for a reasonable price, it might be the fastest and most cost-effective option.

France Travel Tips

A Peek Inside Costco In France: Is It Worth A Special Trip?

Is there Costco in France? Yes, and there are two of them, but they’re not in Paris. Is it worth making a special trip to the Costco warehouse when you’re visiting France? This was a question I asked myself during my last trip and I had the opportunity to find out as I was so close to one of the warehouses. I discovered that in many ways they’re the same as North American Costco warehouses but not entirely as many products are catered to a different (obviously French) market. Get a glimpse inside the warehouse, its unique offerings, and decide if it’s worth making a special trip there.

Table of contents

1. where is there costco in france, 2. can you use your costco membership card at a costco in france, 3. prices at costco in france, 4. navigating the aisles of costco in villebon-sur-yvette, 5. the french experience at costco, 6. wine, liquor, and champagne sold by costco, 7. costco foods, 8. costco food court, 9. international products imported by costco, 10. price of electronics, 11. is it worth a special trip to costco in france, 12. costco locations in france.

Costco Warehouse in Villebon-sur-Yvette France

There are over 860 Costco warehouses around the world, such as in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom, Iceland, Taiwan, and Europe. Spain has 4 warehouses and France has 2 locations!

Costco Locations Near Paris, Not IN Paris

The Costcos in France are NOT in the heart of Paris; however, there are two Costcos located just outside of Paris. Why are the Costcos outside of Paris? Like most Costco stores around the world, they cater to suburbanites, who have larger homes and want to shop in bulk. Plus the warehouses require large parcels of land to store their goods.

Costco Wholesale Pontault-Combault Costco Wholesale Pontault-Combault is 30 minutes southeast of Paris in Pontault-Combault. If you were heading eastward from central Paris, to say, Bois de Vincennes and kept going, you’d eventually reach Pontault-Combault.

Costco Villebon-sur-Yvette The Costco I went to is south of Paris in Villebon-sur-Yvette, located less than 30 minutes south of Versailles and 20 minutes southwest of Paris Orly airport. As I mentioned in my trip #37 report , I stayed in nearby Jouy-en-Josas on my way from Bayeux, Normandy to Dijon, Burgundy. It was the perfect halfway point and the Costco store in Villebon-sur-Yvette was only 20 minutes away so it was the opportune time to visit. Had I not been so close, I would not have made a special trip there. I love Costco but had no need to “stock up” on items. I was just curious if there were any real deals. (Answer: not really).

You can use your Costco card in another country! Your Costco membership (ie. from the U.S, Canada, or any other country) is accepted at Costco stores in France. You just need to show it upon entering and when paying. According to Costco’s website about membership privileges:

“Your membership card is valid at any Costco warehouse worldwide and is not transferable.”

It’s important to note that Costco also states, “If your photo is not on your card, only passports, as well as photo identification issued by the United States, Puerto Rico, Canadian Federal, State, or Provincial governments are acceptable forms of identification.”

(a) Prices In France INCLUDE Taxes

A nice thing about shopping at Costco (or any store) in France is that the price shown includes all taxes. The VAT(Value Added Tax), is a general consumption tax and included! So the price you see is the price you’ll pay.

In Ontario, Canada, we have to add on the HST (Harmonized Sales Tax which is the federal and provincial tax combined) on most items. That’s 13% tax on top of the listed price of goods and services.

(b) VAT Refund

If you spend enough, you might be able to get some of your VAT tax back. Supposedly, Costco gives one of the highest reimbursement rates: 15.5%. As I wrote in this post about applying for the VAT refund in France , after you have paid for your items at Costco, go to the membership desk to see if your purchases qualify. (Remember, not all purchases are eligible. Consumables, like food, are not). If you have spent the minimum required (100.01€ ), they will fill out the Détaxe form that you will take to the Tax Refund area (Détaxe) to get some of your money back.

I did not spend over 100€  so I can’t say for sure if this still applies at Costco. However, in theory, it should if Costco considers itself a participating retailer.

Televisions for sale at Costco in France

The layout of the warehouse in Villebon-sur-Yvette, which opened in 2018, was pretty much the same as Costcos located in Canada and the United States. The 120,000-foot warehouse has aisles devoted to snacks, food products, electronics, clothing, office supplies, household goods, health and beauty, and a large assortment of sporting and outdoor goods, like the three enormous tents hanging from the ceiling. There were many North American products and brands.

Tire centre at Costco

This Costco south of Paris also had a “Centre de Pneu” (Tire centre), “Centre Optique” (Optical centre), “Centre Audif” (Hearing centre), and a food court, just like in North America.

St. Michel Galette Moelleuse cookies

(a) French Products In Costco

Many of the same brands found in North America (ie. Kirkland brand products or Weber vitamins and supplements) are available. But there were many more French brands and French foods (ie. enormous amounts of cheese and French pastries/bread) that are tailored for the local French clientele.

(b) Books At Costco—-All French

Books on sale at Costco in France

I came upon a large selection of books but, I didn’t see any English books. (No surprise really). So, unless you’re fluent in French, you’ll probably just skip browsing the book section.

(c) French Cheese

Goat cheese at Costco in France

Being in France you had to know that the selection of cheese can be fantastic at supermarkets. At Costco, it was pretty impressive but have I been to French supermarkets that had a more extensive selection of cheese? Yes. So, while there were many types of goat cheese at Costco, for example, I don’t think a special trip is needed.

(d) Wide Variety Of Bread and Pastries

Bake at home baguettes at Costco in France

It’s no surprise that French breads and pastries were a big feature at Costco. While there were those packages of 6 enormous muffins, there were also Madeleines (package of 20), St. Michel soft cookies (Galette Moelleuse), bake-at-home baguettes, frozen croissants, and pain au chocolat. North American Costcos have many of these items, but the variety in France is much larger.

(e) Butter Croissants

Butter croissants at Costco in France

I love butter croissants so I had to do an investigation at this French Costco warehouse. 12 freshly baked all-butter croissants are more expensive in France than in Canada (6.49 € or $9.00 versus $6.99 in Canada). But 30 frozen croissants are more expensive in Canada than in France ($16.99 in Canada versus 9.49€ or $13.66).

If you’re visiting Costco from Paris, would you really pick up a dozen croissants and take them back to the city? Sure, they bake them there in the warehouse and I realize they’re cheaper than those from your local boulangerie (0.54 € vs. 1.2 €). But there’s something about getting one locally and supporting your local business.

Buying a dozen croissants from Costco is like buying a dozen croissants from a hypermarché, which is a big French supermarket (ie. Hyper U, Géant, or Auchan) that mass produces and sells products in bulk. They just don’t look as appealing as the ones from the boulangerie. I don’t even buy them at Costco in Canada. Just give me a warm, freshly baked croissant and I’ll be happy.

Wine for sale at Costco France

I know that in the United States, Costco sells wine and liquor; however, in Canada, they do not. In France, there is a large selection of wines (French and foreign) and you can find Ricard Pastis, Apero, Scotch whiskey, Japanese whiskey, and other alcohols from around the world.

You can find many inexpensive wines for under 10€ from well-known brand names (ie. Famille Perrin and E. Guigal), but many there were many brands I didn’t recognize.

Meat section in Costco France

They have frozen foods, and refrigerated sections for fruits and vegetables, meats (beef, pork, and poultry), as well as deli and prepared foods.  And yes, there’s even Costco’s famous rotisserie chicken! In Canada, the quality of Costco meats, vegetables, and food products is always excellent and here in France they also looked very good.

The warehouse also has food and wine sampling; however, I arrived early in the day and they didn’t have anything set up.

Food court in Costco France

The Costco food court in France sells pizza, french fries, chicken wraps, salads, sundaes, and soda pop. The prices were cheap. Contrary to what others have said, they did NOT offer poutine (curds, fries and gravy) as they do at Montreal Costcos.

You can purchase Costco’s famous all-beef hot dog and 20-ounce pop combo for 1.50€ (about $2.15 Cdn) but you don’t get free refills like in North America. In Canada, the price is cheaper at $1.50.

Canadian Maple Syrup for sale at Costco in France

I was amused to see Kirkland Signature Organic Maple Syrup-Sirop d’Erable,  which is made in Canada—at a Costco in France. The 1-litre bottle costs 12.00€ ($17.28) in France versus $15.99 in Canada (It’s cheaper in Canada but not by much with today’s exchange rate. It also helps that there isn’t any tax added onto the Canadian purchase.)

I wasn’t surprised that the Apple Watch Series 8 (41mm) was more expensive in France than in Canada but it wasn’t by a lot. The watch retailed for 469.99€ (incl tax) which is about $677 Canadian (based on a $1.44 per € exchange rate). At that time, the same product in Canada retailed for about $643 (incl. tax). So when exchange rates are favourable, I can see Costco’s prices as being very attractive.

Now that you know what a Costco is really like in France, is it worth making a shopping trip there? If you answer yes to any of these, maybe you should go!

  • Do you already have a membership or are prepared to join Costco?
  • Do you NEED to buy items in bulk? (ie. 40 rolls of toilet paper?)
  • Are you passing by Costco and a stop isn’t out of your way?
  • Are you looking for a “deal” where an item like an Apple watch would be cheaper at Costco than at a regular store?
  • Do you NEED to stock up on wine/liquor?
  • Do you have a car (or lots of friends) to take all your purchases back with you on the Metro?
  • For all your trouble, are you really getting a good deal?

One final food for thought: if you’re just visiting Paris, what would you really buy in Costco that you can’t find in the city? Do you even have room in your home for all your purchases? Where will you store your 40 rolls of toilet paper? Will your fridge or freezer have room for your 15 pounds of ground beef?

If you’re visiting France for a while and want to pick up some goods for your stay outside of Paris, sure, it’s something to consider; however, I wouldn’t go out of my way. There are plenty of hypermarchés in France that have discounted products and they can sell you things in bulk. Shopping at Costco, in any country, is fun, but it’s not the be-all and end-all.

(a) How To Travel By Public Transportation To Either Costco From Paris

The easiest way to get to Costco is by car. Can you get there by bus or Metro? Yes, but I personally don’t think it’s worth the journey. Assuming you’ll be leaving from the centre zone of Paris and taking the RER, you’ll be paying more and the trip will take you at least 1 hour with a few transfers. Then, of course, you might have difficulty getting all your purchases back to Paris.

As an example, I investigated the route from central Paris to Costco in Villebon-sur-Yvette and in most cases, it would take you from 1 hour to 1.5 hours where you would take buses, the RER to Massy Palaiseau, and then walk to Costco.

(b) When Are The Costco France Warehouses Open?

Both Costco stores in France are open 7 days a week, but with shorter hours than one finds in North America. In France, they are typically open:

Monday to Friday 10:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m. Saturday 9:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m. Sunday 8:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m.

Hi Jan. I am not a “Costco” person, but it was interesting to read. Only the persons who went there can describe how it is like in France, but I don’t think many share like you do (in details, as always!). Thank you always for sharing your unique experiences!

Thank you so much for your comment. Funny, I’m trying not to be over-detailed; however, there are just so many things I need to say that others don’t!

Alberta Costcos at most locations do have a liquor store attached to the outside of the building. You don’t need a membership to shop at Alberta Costco liquor stores. However, they only accept MasterCard, interac or cash.

Paris 2024 Olympics guide: all the key venues and the best accommodation

Early olympics tickets have sold out but more are being released and paralympics tickets are now on sale. if you’re planning a visit, here’s everything you need to know.

paris trip package costco

W hen the sun shines and the hordes roll in, Paris comes into her own, wooing visitors with mega-museums, sweeping avenues and sprawling gardens, before giving them the intimate treatment in tiny bistros and cosy Seine-side galleries — which is great news for the Olympics, when millions of visitors will cram the capital. You’ll want the thrill of the crowds, but you’ll also want to escape them; and Paris will let you do both.

The Games will be taking place from July 26 to August 11, 2024, followed by the Paralympics, from August 28 to September 8. For the Olympics, the first draws have ended so it’s first come, first served for the remaining tickets . For the Paralympics, tickets will go on sale on October 9.

The upcoming games mark the centenary of the Paris 1924 Olympics, the last time the city held the Games and the year it invented an enduring fixture — the Olympic Village.

This time, as well as introducing new disciplines like breakdancing, skateboarding, climbing and surfing, the city is on track to showcase the world’s first electric air taxi , the Volocopter eVTOL (a vertical take-off and landing aircraft), between Charles de Gaulle and Le Bourget airports and central Paris.

The Games will take place in over 30 settings in and around the city, including temporary, open-air arenas by iconic monuments, time-honoured stadiums such as Roland Garros and purpose-built centres in the suburbs such as the Centre Aquatique Olympique, an ultra-modern swimming venue in Saint-Denis connected by a footbridge to the Stade de France opposite.

A few competitions (notably football, basketball, handball and sailing) will take place in other French cities, including Lille, Marseilles, Nice and Bordeaux. Only surfing fans will have to go further afield — to Teahupo’o in Tahiti.

Follow this guide for the latest on ticketing, packages and where to stay.

Stade de France: rugby

In the northern suburb of Saint-Denis, this 80,000-seater behemoth is France’s biggest stadium. Built in 1998 for the Fifa World Cup, it has hosted other major sports events including the 2003 Athletics World Championships and Uefa Euro 2016, and concerts by stars such as Beyoncé.

It will be the venue for the final of the 2023 Rugby World Cup on October 28 and rugby will kick off the Olympics here too (starting two days before the official opening), with the rugby sevens men’s and women’s tournaments (July 24 to 30). After that, it’s over to the athletics (August 2 to 11) and the para athletics (August 30 to September 7), followed by the para marathon on September 8.

Where to stay A room in Saint-Denis would be practical (it’s where the Olympic Village will be), but it’s not the best-looking area. Plus, Saint-Denis is so well-connected to Paris (by RER train lines B and D, and Métro lines 12 and 13), it would be a shame not to go somewhere prettier — like the Gare du Nord district, with its Haussmann charm, Eurostar terminal and a direct line to the stadium. Try the hip 25Hours Hotel Terminus Nord opposite the station. It’s got vintage-chic rooms and a cool Mediterranean restaurant and cocktail bar.

Canopy by Hilton Paris Trocadéro

Eiffel Tower Stadium: beach volleyball and blind football

This will be one of the Olympics’ most photogenic sports courts — a temporary, open-air, 12,800-seater stadium on the Champs de Mars, with the Eiffel Tower as its striking backdrop. The vast, tree-lined park is no stranger to big crowds — it’s here that the Bastille Day firework displays are held and where football fans often watch World Cup matches on giant screens. For the Olympics, beach volleyball will take centre stage (July 27 to August 10), followed by blind football during the Paralympics (August 30 to September 7).

Where to stay You’ll find Canopy by Hilton Paris Trocadéro in a handy spot by the Trocadéro Métro station (direct to the venue on line 6), and just a 15-minute walk away. Rooms have a Seventies’ chic vibe, and some have balconies, with views of the Eiffel Tower. There’s also a rooftop bar.

Roland Garros Stadium: tennis and boxing

West of the city by the leafy Bois de Boulogne, the mere sight of this venerable stadium’s red clay courts is enough to fill most tennis fans with joy. All the greats have competed here, from Bjorn Borg and Chris Evert to Rafael Nadal and Venus Williams, and it’s still the home of the French Open. The Games’ tennis competitions will take place here from July 27 to August 4, with wheelchair tennis from August 30 to September 7, and so too will the boxing finals (August 6 to 10).

Where to stay Hôtel Molitor Paris, just across the street, was once a renowned art deco swimming complex (the bikini was born here in 1946). Today it’s a modish, artsy hotel with a hip brasserie, a Clarins spa and big indoor and outdoor pools that whisk you back to the 1930s.

The Patrouille de France precision aerobatics unit flies past the Eiffel Tower during the Olympics handover ceremony in 2021 (Alamy)

Château de Versailles: cross-country riding and modern pentathlon

Southwest of the city, this must be the Games’ most grandiose setting — a temporary arena amid the sprawling, geometric lawns of the Sun King’s former palace. To one side, the vainglorious château; to the other, the emerald stretch of Le Nôtre’s sumptuous grounds; in the middle, a rather pretty space for eventing, dressage and jumping (July 27 to August 6). The grounds will also be used for cross-country riding (July 28) and the modern pentathlon (August 8 to 11).

Where to stay Versailles is a 40-minute train or RER ride from central Paris, so it makes sense to stay overnight. If you do, you’ll be hard-pushed to get closer to the palace than at the Louis Versailles Château (on the site of Napoleon III’s former military barracks), complete with sauna and cocktail bar.

Notre-Dame and the Seine at sunset (Alamy)

Grand Palais: fencing and taekwondo

This whopping, glass-roofed masterpiece (built for the 1900 Paris Exposition) is set between the Champs-Élysées and the Seine, and flaunts a 240m-long nave made with 6,000 tonnes of steel — more than the Eiffel Tower. It’s known for art exhibitions, but sports events are held here too, including the international Saut Hermès showjumping competition. Closed for renovations, the palace will reopen for the Games to host fencing (July 27 to August 4) and taekwondo (August 7 to 10), followed by para taekwondo (August 29 to 31) and wheelchair fencing (September 3 to 7).

Where to stay The Grand Palais is very central (on Métro lines 1 and 13), so you don’t have to limit yourself to the area, which is known for its high prices. Métro hop to La Fantaisie in the villagey 9th arrondissement, with artsy rooms, a big (for Paris) garden and a chic rooftop. It’s also by Galeries Lafayette and Printemps departments stores, for some pre or post-Games retail therapy.

Taking the sun in the ultramodern La Défense district (Alamy)

Paris La Défense Arena: swimming and water polo

Compared to the rest of Paris, the high-rise business district of La Défense looks space-age and the aesthetic continues at this white, concrete, Christian de Portzamparc-designed stadium, shaped like a futuristic whale (its outer envelope of glass and aluminium screens resemble rows of giant teeth). The Rolling Stones baptised it in 2017, and it’s home to the Racing 92 rugby union club, so both music and rugby get good coverage. For the Olympics, it’ll morph into a vast pool complex for swimming (July 27 to August 4) and water polo (August 5 to 11), then para swimming (August 29 to September 7).

Where to stay Just two Métro stops away is Mama Shelter Paris La Défense, an ideal option with bright funky rooms (many of which have sweeping city views), a steakhouse and an American-style sports bar with TV screens for catching up on events.

Bercy Arena: basketball and gymnastics

This gigantic, grass-covered pyramid in the 12th arrondissement is a multi-sports venue opened in 1984 and used for all sorts of events, from basketball and handball to tennis and motocross. Big-name music stars frequently grace its mega-stage too, making it one of Paris’ most popular entertainment venues. For the Olympics, up to 15,000 spectators will cram the seats to see basketball (July 27 to August 10) and gymnastics (July 27 to August 5), followed by wheelchair basketball during the Paralympics (August 29 to September 8).

Where to stay Inside the block-shaped “head” of one of architect Jean Nouvel’s ultramodern glass-fronted twin towers (just across the Seine from Bercy, in the 13th arrondissement), rooms at the new Too Hotel Paris come with breathtaking vistas over the city’s steely rooftops — as does its Skybar, set a lofty 120m (400ft) off the ground, with an outdoor terrace.

Parc des Princes: football

Known for its brutal concrete structure and excellent acoustics, the 48,000-seater home of the Paris Saint-Germain football club used to be France’s biggest stadium until the Stade de France came along. But it’s still impressive. During the Games, it will host men’s and women’s football matches every few days, from kick-off on July 24 to the finals on August 9 (men) and 10 (women).

Where to stay Set by the Périphérique (the Paris ring road), the stadium is not in the best area for hotels, but the Ibis Styles 16 Boulogne (just a seven-minute walk away) has bright, functional rooms and is a stone’s throw from Porte de Saint-Cloud Métro station, which takes you to the centre (including the Champs Élysées) on line 9 in under 15 minutes.

How can I get tickets for the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics?

Tickets to the Olympics are now available in real time, exclusively via the official Paris 2024 website (tickets.paris2024.org). Many sports have already sold out, but if you’re quick, you’ll find tickets for competitions taking place outside central Paris, and for the opening and closing ceremonies (prices start at €24 and go up to €2,700 for the opening ceremony). The maximum number of purchasable tickets is four or six per account (you can sign up and open an account on the website), depending on the sport or ceremony.

Sales for the Paralympics will start on October 9 on a first come, first served basis. There will be no random draw, just single tickets and special offers. These include a Family Offer, which allows you to buy up to two children’s tickets for €10 for every two adult tickets purchased (excluding the ceremonies), and two Discovery Passes (one for central Paris, the other for southern Paris, both costing €24), allowing access to three to seven sports events in the same day, depending on the pass.

What are the best tour packages and when should I book?

For the first time ever, all packages are being sold via a single platform called On Location (hospitalitytravelpackages.paris2024.org). After the first wave of sales, there are three types to choose between — Hospitality Packages, Travel Packages and Opening Ceremony Packages — and you should book them now. There’s no time limit, but once they’re gone, they’re gone.

Hospitality Packages will guarantee seating and priority access to your choice of events and (in Paris) provide access to special lounges, including Clubhouse 24, a multidisciplinary hub (in the Palais de Tokyo in the 16th arrondissement) offering food, drink and entertainment, including concerts and meet-and-greet sessions with athletes. All remaining packages are available according to discipline, with the main difference being ticket category, type of food, drink and service, and access to entertainment.

Travel packages are available for either one to three nights or three to six. Both include tickets (including bundle possibilities), hotel accommodation and transport. The three to six-night packages add (among others) extras like tailor-made themed tours (think food and wine, history and culture and family activities), as well as city passes to attractions, and access to the Salon 24, a hospitality space with food, drink and interactive activities in the 18th-century Maison de l’Amérique Latine.

How can I enjoy Paris if I haven’t got a ticket?

For a handful of the outdoor events, such as the marathon, triathlon, rowing, open water swimming and even the opening ceremony, parts of the route will be visible to non-ticket holders along the streets, bridges and riverbanks — though you might have to sharpen your elbows and crane your neck to get a glimpse.

It’ll be business as usual for the museums and attractions during the Games and the city has pledged to maintain most of its summer events — which include some world-class music festivals (though the dates have yet to be released) — so there will be plenty to do.
