Himiko cruise
The leiji matsumoto boat ride in tokyo.
Himiko Cruise is a themed boat ride on the Sumida River, between Asakusa and Odaiba in the east of Tokyo. The futuristic setting was designed by famous manga artist Leiji Matsumoto.
When traveling in the Japanese capital, it's impossible not to cross the vast Sumida River flowing down eastern Tokyo . Along several stations of the Yamanote line (from a few hundred meters), Sumida river can be appreciated in Asakusa and Ryogoku, up to Hama-Rikyu gardens and Tsukishima where it flows into Tokyo bay before arriving at Odaiba . Sumidagawa is very present in Tokyo, and of course cruises are organized, especially by Suijo and its famous " Tokyo Cruise " which includes a dozen shuttles.
Futuristic design boats
For fans of Japanese popular culture , the most attractive of them is undoubtedly Himiko, named after the eponymous queen. This boat has a peculiarity: it was designed by mangaka Leiji Matsumoto , father of Yamato , Captain Harlock , Galaxy Express or Interstella (for Daft Punk). This is what explains the ship's unique design (both outside and inside) and the special atmosphere of the cruise, getting a very strong footprint from its master.
Thus, there are countless keys of his artistic touch, from the glass ceilings and Ginga Tetsudô figures, to commentary made by some of its original voice actors. Note that there is a slightly improved version of Himiko boat, called Hotaluna , which allows to go up on the deck if the weather permits.
Going to Odaiba by the sea
The rate charged to take advantage of this particular trip is not cheap, but it offers a moment to share and allows to cut off a tiring tour of Tokyo. To reach Odaiba from Asakusa for example, this is a fun alternative to train 🚅 transfers. By day, the view is excellent on several monuments, such as the Rainbow Bridge, and changes the angle of approach.

We work to conserve and restore the Tokyo Bay environment where a diverse array of shellfish, crustaceans and other creatures once thrived. Studies have shown that the area is home to earthworm gobies and other endangered Tokyo species. We endeavor to create an environment that will serve as a model for how to restore this precious area to its former glory.

Sumida River Cruise Ship
Travel in style along the Sumida River in Tokyo
While it won’t get you from Point A to Point B quite as quickly as the train, the Tokyo Cruise Ship service (also called the Suijou Bus, or Water Bus ) is the way to travel in style along the Sumida River from Asakusa . With their fleet of 11 ships on 7 routes, you can travel between 12 locations in the Tokyo Bay area, including Asakusa, Hinode Pier in Shinagawa, Hamarikyu Pier in Hamarikyu Garden , Odaiba Seaside Park , Tokyo Big Sight or Palette Town in Odaiba , and Kasai Rinkai Park .
The futuristic cruise ship Himiko is the face of the fleet, running on the Asakusa-Odaiba Direct Line. Designed by Matsumoto Leiji, the famous artist behind the manga Galaxy Express 999, characters from the series stand on Himiko’s inner deck. Other ships, such as the sophisticated Jubilee and the new samurai ship Atakemaru are also popular.
Fares are based on distance and range from 200 yen for a 5-minute trip (for example, from Hinode to Harumi Piers) to 2,000 yen (for the 70-minute ride from Asakusa to Toyosu). Atakemaru , the newest route and ship, features an “ordinary” rate of 1,000 yen for adults (1,500 for a round-trip) on its route from Hinode to Odaiba, but also has a “special room” rate of 1,500 yen (2,000 round trip) that allow you to enjoy a more comfortable ride for the 40-minute trip. Bento boxes may be reserved in advance for groups of 20 or more.
One thing to watch out for is that the water bus services end relatively early in the evening, and if you are looking to spend time at your destination, you may wish to take the train back to your lodgings. However, there’s nothing quite like a summer day on the river, passing under the Sumida Bridges. Refreshments, even alcohol, are available on the water buses and a guide will provide information about the area as you cruise. It’s a relaxing and enjoyable way to travel, and will give you a view of Tokyo that you simply can’t find anywhere else!

A Tokyo Travel Guide
Sumida River Cruise (Sumida Line)
The Sumida River Cruise (Sumida Line) is a great way to travel between Asakusa and the Tokyo Bay Area. You’ll see a totally different side of Tokyo and you’ll get a break from subways and trains.
The Sumida River Cruise (Sumida Line in Japanese) connects several piers around the Tokyo Bay Area (Hinode, Hama Rikyu, Nihonbashi, Odaiba and Toyosu) with Asakusa (which is convenient for Senso-ji Temple and close to the museum district of Ueno, as well as Tokyo Sky Tree).
You’ll experience a totally different view of the city from the river and you’ll be reminded that Tokyo is indeed a port city. Three futuristic boats ply a variety of routes and stop in different places. Check the English-language website (below) for full details.

Tokyo Water Bus
Located on a bay and covered with a network of rivers and canals, Tokyo has a few boat services that tourists may find useful. The Water Bus (oX, Suijō Basu) can be an enjoyable alternative to trains or subways when traveling between destinations near the water.
The locations most notably convenient for water bus access are the man-made islands of Tokyo Bay, especially Odaiba . Many water buses also travel along the Sumida River, one of the city's most famous rivers. The many bridges that span the river have each a different design. Boats along the river provide access to Asakusa and Ryogoku .
The coronavirus pandemic had a severe impact on the water buses, and services remain considerably reduced compared to pre-corona times. On the most popular lines, departures can be close to hourly, but on many other sections, there are only few connections per day, and service is completely suspended on certain weekdays.
Most of the water buses are operated by the Tokyo Cruise Ship Company . Its main line connects Asakusa with Odaiba . Besides direct connections, some boats stop along the way at Hama Rikyu (in the direction of Hinode only), Hinode and Toyosu (in the direction of Asakusa only). There are also 30-minute mini cruises, which start and end in Asakusa.
Some other water bus lines are operated by the Tokyo Metropolitan Park Association. The Mizube Cruise Line travels from Asakusa on the Sumida River via Ryogoku to Odaiba . Only on selected days, service is also provided between Odaiba and Kasai Rinkai Park .
There are some other cruises available that include lunch or dinner for customers to enjoy a meal on the water. These cruises usually take about two hours and make a round trip that ends at the departure point. Prices depend on the meal and typically vary from 6,000 to 15,000 yen.
Getting there and around
Asakusa Pier The pier is located along the Sumida River, just beside the Asakusa Stations of the Ginza Subway Line and the Tobu Line or a five minute walk from Asakusa Station on the Asakusa Subway Line. More detailed access information can be found on the Asakusa page .
Odaiba Pier The pier is located just in front of the Aquacity Odaiba shopping mall, about a five minute walk from either Daiba Station or Odaiba-Kaihinkoen Station on the Yurikamome Line. More detailed access information can be found on the Odaiba page .
Hinode Pier The pier is a five minute walk north from Hinode Station on the Yurikamome Line, which can be accessed from Shimbashi Station (5 minutes, 260 yen, along the JR Yamanote Line ).
Hama Rikyu Pier The pier is located within Hama Rikyu garden . Currently it is not possible to board water buses at Hama Rikyu, but only to get off.

Highlights of Himiko and Hotaluna
The Tokyo Water Bus company has a wide fleet of boats to ferry people up and down the waterways of Tokyo, but the best experience lies in riding the Himiko or Hotaluna, two space-age ships designed by the animator Leiji Matsumoto. I took the Hotaluna on its full length from Asakusa to Odaiba, with a brief stop at Hinode Pier. There’s not as much to see along the Sumida River, and even inside it’s kind of hard to stay out of the sun, but things get more interesting once you pass the river’s mouth and into Tokyo Bay. I would recommend the Hotaluna over the Himiko. The Hotaluna takes longer due to an extra stop, but it has an open-air top deck (which was opened half-way through my trip).
If you want to do it (even to take a rest) take the short one. the view is not that great and I can't imagine doing it for three hours...
If you are looking for a beautiful view during the 45 min cruise ride, you are completely wrong. It is just another cruise and is highly overrated. You can carry your own drinks and snacks to enjoy during the cruise ride or buy them on board.
Leisurely cruise but seeing a lot OF unaesthetic buildings like apartments office blocks .Very little greenery along this river , dusty too
I mainly took this tour to move from a part of town to another as an alternative to the subway but, I must say, there is nothing more to bridges to see. I barely took a picture or two... Don't waste money if you are a family visiting the city!
We took Haluma ship (futuristic and spaceship shaped boat) from Asakusa to Odaiba. Its fast (50min), cheap (1560Y or 12E at our visit) and you get to see lots of skyscrapers on your way to Odaiba. Try to get the trip that covers the sunset close to the end of the trip for changing light and artificial lights on arrival. It's a must! Odaiba is fine with some shopping and the Liberty statue replica with rainbow bridge in the background. To get back after dinner (food court in aqua building is unexpensive and good value) take the monorail for about 390Y (3E) to Shinbashi st with connections to the Yamanote JR lineand others.

Sumida River Cruise & Tokyo Bay Cruise: The Leisurely Way to See the Heart of Tokyo (Tours & Tickets)
Did you know that Tokyo actually is a city of water? The southeastern part of the Japanese capital faces Tokyo Bay, while the Sumida River has acted as Tokyo’s gateway to the sea since ancient times. This access to the ocean has always attracted both people and business, and even today, you’ll spot many a ship sailing on the rivers and Tokyo Bay. Among those ships are the so-called water buses, or ‘suijo bus’ in Japanese. These unique boat taxis have gained popularity, especially among visitors to the area. These water buses do not only take you from one place to the other, however; they offer amazing views of the city of Tokyo, and in some cases even unique gourmet experiences – let’s take a look at Tokyo’s trendy water buses!
Tokyo Cruise – The Standard of Tokyo’s Water Buses
When talking about Tokyo’s representative water buses, the name Tokyo Cruise immediately comes to mind. Their water buses populate the beautiful Sumida River , connecting Asakusa with the Hinode Pier at Hamamatsucho, Toyosu, and Odaiba Kaihin Park , among other locations. The sightseeing ship company that operates Tokyo Cruise was initially founded 100 years ago. Back then, it was called “Sumida River Steamship Company” and operated small passenger steamships called issenjoki , “one sen steamboats.” This is because one trip on such a boat cost the passenger one sen, which is about 100 yen in today’s economy. These cheap steamboats were incredibly popular with Tokyo’s common folk as a convenient and easy way to get around the busiest parts of the city.
Today, Tokyo Cruise offers several different lines. The Sumida River Line connects Asakusa to Hinode Pier at the mouth of the river ; the Odaiba Line connects Hinode Pier to Odaiba Kaihin Park . The Tokyo Big Sight & Palette Town Line runs between Hinode Pier and two of Odaiba ’s popular spots: Tokyo Big Sight and Palette Town. The water buses of these lines can be boarded without prior reservation. As the boats depart very frequently, water buses are the perfect way to enjoy unique and relaxed Tokyo sightseeing between Asakusa and Odaiba . The Sumida River Line also offers an audio guide for 300 yen, available in English, Chinese, and Korean. Some of Tokyo’s most famous landmarks can be spotted on the way, such as Tokyo Skytree (R) or the Rainbow Bridge – get a fresh perspective on the Japanese capital, by boat!
Among Tokyo Cruise’s water buses are two truly unique boats: the Himiko and the Hotaluna, designed by the mangaka Leiji Matsumoto, the creator of Space Battleship Yamato, Space Pirate Captain Harlock, and Galaxy Express 999. The sci-fi-esque Himiko and Hotaluna are the symbols of Tokyo’s water buses. Both the Hikiko and the Hotaluna boats operate their own lines – the Himiko line connects Asakusa to Odaiba Kaihin Park and Toyosu, while the Hotaluna Line runs between Asakusa and Odaiba Kaihin Park , with a halfway stop at Hinode Pier. On the Himiko boats, passengers can enjoy an inboard café that offers unique sweets and cocktails, as well as an audio guide for the characters of Leiji Matsumoto’s famous work, Galaxy Express 999 .

Tokyo Mizube Line – Taking You to the Edge of Tokyo
Next to Tokyo Cruise’s water bus service, another line is trendy among both locals and tourists alike: the Tokyo Mizube Line. The best feature of this water bus line is its large number of boarding places. Eighteen different boarding places are along the Sumida River , reaching far upstream from Asakusa , to Azusawa, Itabashi , and right up to the prefectural border of Saitama. Parallel to the Sumida River flows the Arakawa River , and the boats of the Tokyo Mizube Line sail to the eastern end of Tokyo, up to the Kasai Rinkai Park of Edogawa. No reservation is required to hop on the sightseeing boats, and an accompanying audio guide is available in English on board.
Tokyo Mizube Line has three main lines. The Asakusa Odaiba Cruise offers a leisurely trip between slightly above Asakusa and Odaiba , allowing you to get on and off at six different stops, such as Azumaba, Ryogoku , Etchujima, St. Luke’s Garden , and Hamarikyu Gardens . With the Asakusa Kasai Cruise, look forward to following the Sumida River upstream from Ryogoku to Asakusa . There, the water bus will turn downstream once more, taking you to Odaiba Seaside Park and further to the famous Kasai Rinkai Park in the east of Tokyo, where attractions such as an aquarium and a Ferris wheel can be enjoyed. The third line is the Odaiba Kasai Tour, running back and forth from the Kasai Rinkai Park and the Odaiba Seaside Park , covering a vast area on the way. Both the Asakusa Kasai Cruise and the Odaiba Kasai Tour sail along the Tokyo Gate Bridge, which was opened in 2012. The gigantic bridge of 8 kilometers spans Tokyo Bay and is a marvelous sight – one that can only be enjoyed up close with the Tokyo Mizube Line.

Japan’s First “On Demand” Water Bus Taxi – in Tokyo!
Next to sightseeing water buses, a new service that was started in 2015 now offers Japan’s first “on-demand boats” – Tokyo Water Taxi. The water taxis operate like any other taxi, covering four areas in total – Shinagawa , Tsukiji , Nihonbashi, and Asakusa – on demand. Even from the outside, the water taxis are just like their classic car version. Shining in a bright yellow color, the boats are reminiscent of the characteristic yellow cabs of New York. This unique method of maritime transportation is attracting a lot of attention from both locals and tourists alike.
Tokyo Water Taxi offers the following three courses of interest to visitors. The first one is the Basic Ride - Direct Plan , which can be used for up to seven days (weekdays only) and lets you hop on and off at 19 different places, such as Tennozu Pier or Toyosu. When you want to take a water taxi, call your boat via phone or web like you’d call a regular taxi – the phone service is available in English, Chinese, and Korean. The Basic Ride - Custom Plan needs to be booked via the internet and can be used for more than seven days, without breaks on the weekend. It encompasses 27 places to get on and off the boats in total, and if you see a spot that strikes your fancy during your trip, just point to it and you can hop off and explore! Detours are perfectly fine, and fully customized cruise tours can also be enjoyed. Finally, the Basic Ride - Recommended Plan , with water taxis running between Tamachi and Tennozu Pier on Wednesday and Friday nights every week. While a reservation is required via phone (in Japanese only), if a boat isn’t full, you can hop on just as it is, for a mere 500 yen per trip. This is highly recommended for everyone who wants to try Tokyo’s unique water taxi without booking a full course!
・Fare: Depends on boarding/destination locations, but around 5,000 yen for 15 minutes via the Direct Plan; 5,000 yen for 15 minutes as the standard fee for each trip via the Custom Plan. (Fare for one boat. Up to 8 people can board.) ・Duration: Depends on the plan (15 minutes minimum) ・Holidays: Depends on the plan ・Access: 5-minute walk from Asakusa Station to Asakusa Nitenmon boarding place ・Website: Tokyo Water Taxi

Urban Launch operates daily and is incredibly convenient since a prior reservation is not required.
Urban Launch enjoys many regulars who use the water bus service to go shopping at Toyosu’s large shopping mall , cycle around Odaiba , or take their dogs for a walk at Shibaura. A charter service is also offered, allowing you to board the fancy cruiser for your own occasion – why not throw a party with all your friends and enjoy an entirely new perspective of Tokyo? Symphony Tokyo Bay Cruise – Amazing Views and Amazing Food Await
The last cruise service on the list is Symphony Tokyo Bay Cruise, operated by Sea Line Tokyo. Offering round-trip cruises with an on-board restaurant, these impressive ships can be boarded at Hinode Pier. While this round-trip style cruise differs from the previously introduced water bus services, Symphony Tokyo Bay Cruise deserves a place on this list as a marvelous way to enjoy Tokyo Bay’s beautiful scenery while indulging in excellent French and Italian cuisine. Due to this gourmet service and the cruise ships’ luxurious atmosphere, Symphony Tokyo Bay Cruise is very popular, particularly among international tourists.
