Destination Speaker / Lecturer

A Destination Speaker’s responsibility is to give a series of original presentations illustrating the culture, history, geography, anthropology, wildlife, marinelife and politics of the regions, countries and ports of call on a given cruise itinerary. For instance, a Speaker on a cruise to Mexico may discuss the Mexican-American War, foreign policy between the United States and Mexico, or the culture of the country. The talks should not be a reiteration of what to see-and-do in Puerto Vallarta. Rather, they should provide the guests with insight into the ports that one would not be able to find in an average guidebook. The Destination Speaker must have strong credentials and be an excellent and experienced public speaker as typical audience size ranges from 50-300 passengers for each talk. However, good news travels fast aboard ships and great Speakers / Lecturers have been known to pack the house!

Special Interest Speaker / Lecturer

Special Interest Speaker / Lecturer should discuss their area of expertise in a fun, educating and entertaining manner. The door is wide-open when it comes to this position as numerous fields of study are applicable. The topics of the seminars and lectures given do not necessarily have to be connected with the particular ports of call visited during the cruise. It is difficult to list all the topics for special interest lectures and seminars aboard cruise ships, but the spectrum is wide open - opera, theatre, classical music, photography, marinelife, wildlife, cooking, wine, art, movies, astronomy, lighthouses, animals, arts & crafts, earth science, medical, nutrition, world affairs, computers, fashion, geology, astronomy, self - improvement, just to name a few.

Port / Shopping Lecturer or Presenter

This type of position is somewhat different than the other two type of cruise ships speakers. The Port / Shopping Lecturer must have detailed knowledge about the ports of call, but most of all the speaker should recommend to passengers various stores and shops ashore and be in constant touch with vendors. Port / Shopping Lecturers are commonly used in the Caribbean for port shopping talks. Duties other than making presentations may vary from company to company. The job requires superior public speaking skills and sales training. Port / Shopping Lecturers often represent certain stores ashore and support passengers who shop at the recommended stores by guaranteeing the merchandise. Port lecturers must be, above all, enthusiastic and credible. A thorough knowledge of the Caribbean is also helpful. 

For all types of cruise ship lecturers / speakers contracts and salary vary depending on the cruise line. For Port / Shopping Lecturers pay is usually base plus commission from various shops ashore.

Topics in demand

Destination speakers—who may talk about a port’s history, politics, shopping, geography or food and wine—are in high demand. Others speak about or give lessons in belly dancing, astronomy, bridge, balloon twisting, face painting or other arts and crafts. 

Paul DiFilippi, Director of Cruise Ship Enrichment Programs for Sixth Star, a cruise booking agency, says there’s even a demand for grill masters during the summer. Allan Jordan, a noted historian and author who specializes in the history of 20th-century cruise ships and ocean liners, is a sought-after onboard speaker. Naturalists who can talk about the flora and fauna of Alaska, Hawaii or the Panama Canal region and members of the clergy, particularly rabbis and priests, are in high demand. Men who are proficient in ballroom dancing and who are interested in cutting a rug with women passengers are, too. Berlitz language instructors teach basic Spanish while cruising the Americas.

World affairs are always good subjects, just not the bad news. Laurie Wickwire, GIA-certified diamond grader, for example, lectures about the Crown Jewels and other shiny objects. But she doesn’t talk about conflict diamonds. “Too gruesome,” she says.

 “Anyone who knows about Cuba is in hot demand,” says DiFilippi. Cruise lines he’s talked to are looking for lecturers for 100 Cuba cruise itineraries. If you know about the history, culture, art or music of Cuba, you may be an ideal cruise ship presenter. Another in-demand topic is forensics, spurred by the popularity of such TV shows as “Law and Order,” “CSI” and “Bones,” so anyone involved in the field or in a famous court case will be of interest as a speaker.

What’s the catch?

Only a few A-list people are paid for these speaking gigs. The rest generally pay a fee of $50 to $65 a night for the length of the cruise. The fee and perks are negotiable due to subject demand, length of cruise (e.g., a naturalist on the ship for a full Alaska summer season) and other factors. Each speaker usually can bring a spouse or friend to share the cabin. Depending on the ship, the speaker is in a passenger cabin, although on some ships it may be on a deck where crew quarters are located. Meals, most beverages, all guest-related activities and onboard entertainment are included. Sometimes gratuities are included. Although transportation between home and the ship is not usually covered, when it is, it’s generally just for the speaker. 

Lecturers usually talk during sea days (days when the ship doesn’t call on a port and passengers are relegated to onboard activities). This leaves you free to tour the ports of call, sunbathe, read or do whatever you want to on port days. For a relatively small fee, you can travel the world, meet interesting people and enjoy fine food and great service.

What do I have to do?

Generally, speakers and instructors are booked through an agency. Tim Castle, who books speakers, says, “The audience is different from a school audience. Primarily, the average passenger is in their 50s and 60s. They need to be entertained and educated. They have choices for their activities, so a speaker needs to be dynamic, with great visuals and few words on slides. The presentation should appear to be extemporaneous, without reading notes.”

If you’re interested in becoming a speaker or instructor, you should contact the agency and be ready to provide a DVD of a presentation you’ve made, with visuals, or a link to one or more YouTube clips. Also, provide a resume of your expertise. Once accepted, the booking company distributes a list of open ships, dates, topics and itineraries to its speakers. You indicate what you want. After your first gig, if you like the teaching and cruising life and the cruise line likes you, then you can request back-to-back cruises.

Bookings are done nine to 18 months out, or as little as a week. Agencies represent opportunities onboard Crystal, Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Princess, Disney, MSC, Norwegian, Viking Ocean Cruises and Cunard.

5 things you should know about being a cruise line speaker

• You must have a passport valid for at least six months from your original date of departure, even if you don’t plan to get off the ship. It’s up to you to determine if you need a visa or any vaccinations for any port on your itinerary.
• Most likely you will be asked to avoid table games in the casino and you might not be able to sit at the bar or carry a drink when walking in public.
• You may or may not have a badge identifying you as a speaker (technically a crew member) and you’ll be expected to mingle with the other guests.
• Be prepared to accept a cruise that may not be your first choice in dates (within reason, considering the school year), cruise line or itinerary. Saying no the first time could mean not being called again, unless you have expertise in a really desirable topic.
•  You may sell items related to your lecture, including books or CDs. The ship may take a percentage of your sales.

Activities coordinator

Even short cruises are packed with activities for travelers to engage in. Among other things, you'll find games, happy hours and live music.

An activities coordinator is similar to an event planner. In this role, you oversee things like recreation on board and coordinating shore excursion activities. The BLS does not offer wage information for this position.

It’s no secret that people on cruises like to drink. Many cruise lines offer a food and alcohol package as part of the booking process.

The amount of money you can make working as a bartender on a cruise ship varies greatly, depending on whether guests are expected to tip. But the average salary for bartenders is $29,380 annually.

Casino dealer

Working as a dealer at a cruise casino can be an exciting gig. These workers may oversee poker, blackjack, roulette, and more games.

Gambling service workers make $31,290 a year. However, as with tending bar, the actual wages for casino workers on a cruise can vary.

Many cruise ships have cafeterias and restaurants for when guests are in the mood for fine dining.

Cruise ship chefs may be involved in cooking and planning menus for guests and staff. Chefs or head cooks make $56,520 on average annually.

Deckhands help maintain the cruise ship. They may be involved in keeping these massive ships running, including cleaning and maintaining equipment, loading cargo, and getting passengers safely on board.

The experience required to work as a deckhand can vary greatly depending on the job description. The BLS does not offer salary information for this position.

Entertainer

Cruise lines hire all sorts of entertainers, from dancers to cover bands and magicians.

Working on a cruise ship can be a great way to hone and improve your craft or even take it in a different direction. The average wage for entertainers and performers is $29.67 an hour, which equates to about $61,713 annually.

Entertainment director

Cruise ships also need people to manage their entertainers, particularly if the ship has a lot of shows and performances scheduled.

Entertainment directors may be involved in scheduling staff, planning performances, and doing administrative work. The average salary for entertainment/recreation managers is $67,220 annually.

Fitness instructor

Many cruise ships also offer various fitness classes, including yoga, Zumba, spin, and more.

For qualified instructors, this can be a great way to stay healthy, make money, and travel the world all at the same time. The average fitness instructor makes $45,380 annually.

Hair/makeup artist

On cruise ships, hair and makeup artists may work in spas, providing services to guests looking to get pampered while on board, and may be needed to work with the ship’s performers.

The BLS groups barbers, hairstyles, and cosmetologists together and states an average of $33,400 annual salary for these workers.

Hotel director

Since a cruise ship is essentially a floating hotel, many employees with experience working in hospitality are needed.

Hotel directors ensure that guests are comfortable and enjoy their experience. They may also be involved in planning and coordinating cruise activities.

The average salary for lodging managers is $61,910 annually.

Some cruise ships also hire nurses to provide care to passengers and cruise staff.

The amount of money nurses make on average usually depends on the type of nurse. Registered nurses (RNs) make $81,220 annually. Licensed practical nurses (LPNs) make $54,620 a year.

Massage therapist

Many cruise passengers opt to take advantage of spa services. Massage therapists may work in a spa or travel to guests’ rooms with their equipment to provide massages.

Licensed massage therapists make just under $49,860 annually on average.

Cruise ships also frequently employ security staff to ensure the safety of guests and crew members. These workers may patrol the ship regularly and respond to any issues that come up.

The average salary for security guards is $33,030 annually.

Eating often and well is a big draw for many cruise passengers. Ships often have several restaurants on board and employ experienced servers to staff them.

Pay for these workers can vary, depending on the cruise line’s tipping policy. The average salary for a server in the U.S. is $29,120 annually.

Sales associate

Part of the beauty of the typical cruise ship is that it’s kind of like a floating mall, filled with gift shops and retail stores galore. Ships often need many sales associates to staff these stores.

Again, depending on the cruise line and the job, the pay for these gigs may vary. However, BLS data puts the average salary for a retail sales worker at $30,750 annually.

That’s not huge money, but perhaps it's enough for students to get ahead financially during breaks between school years.

Bottom line

Working as a cruise crew member is certainly not for everyone — lodging for staff can be cramped, days can be long, and you might be away from home for weeks at a time.

But for those looking to tap into a new source of income as they travel, it just may be a win-win situation.

English Governess / Governor Job - Moscow I am currently recruiting for a positive and outgoing English Speaking Governess or Governor to work with two boys (8 and 10 years old). The job is to start as soon as possible and will be based in Moscow. This job is suitable for a teacher or nanny who has experience working with boys of this age group and someone who is passionate about childcare and child development. You will need to be fit and healthy and have well developed ideas and ways of communicating effectively with boys and helping them grow into the best version of themselves. Daily life will include: • Organizing leisure and sports/ games according to children’s ages and health conditions. • Communications in English and helping the boys develop their language skills • Taking children to schools and kindergarten and accompanying them during holidays abroad. • Developmental activities. • Teaching fine manners. • Preparing the boys for English schools Requirements: • Female/male 20 - 35 y.o. • Positive and active person with interest in sport. • Highly desirable: education in high-profile schools and universities in the UK or USA (although if you are amazing and this doesn’t apply, please send me your CV anyway) Conditions: • Moscow area • 5 days a week with two days off during the weekdays.
