Do Visitors Need U.S. Health Insurance?

While health insurance is not always mandatory when traveling to the U.S., regulations may vary depending on the circumstances around your visit and your visa needs. In addition, health plans from different countries are generally not accepted in the U.S., which means you could pay thousands of dollars out-of-pocket for treatment in an emergency without a valid plan.

Note that many foreign visitors traveling to the U.S. do not need a visa to enter the country for less than 90 days. However, some visa requirements for long-term visitors require health insurance coverage for the duration of their stay. Regardless of the requirements for your travels, it’s worth considering a travel medical insurance plan based on the high cost of U.S. healthcare. According to GoodRx, an emergency room visit can cost upwards of $2,400 to $2,600 without insurance in the U.S.

Health Insurance Requirements for Visitors

While tourists do not technically need a travel medical insurance plan to obtain a visa, other types of visitors do. For instance, if you’re a student planning to study abroad in a U.S.-based college or university using an F-1 or J-1 visa, you’ll likely need some sort of health insurance or a comparable equivalent. Many universities that accept students on visas require medical coverage that complies with the school’s outlined health insurance requirements.

Note that health insurance requirements for visitors to the U.S. largely depend on the type of visa you need to enter the country. Regardless of whether it’s required, we recommend medical insurance based on the high costs of U.S. healthcare services.

Compare Travel Medical Insurance Plans for U.S. Tourists

See the table below for a direct comparison of costs, deductibles and more between travel medical insurance plans for U.S. visitors.

We based plan costs on quotes we obtained for a 30-year-old Australian citizen traveling to the U.S. for 30 days. Each plan includes a medical maximum of $500,000 with a $250 deductible. Note that your actual cost will depend on factors such as your age, number of travelers, chosen deductible and more.

Types of Health Insurance for U.S. Visitors

Travelers have options when it comes to health insurance for U.S. visitors. For one, you could choose an international travel medical insurance plan, which provides coverage for emergency medical expenses or evacuation abroad. A U.S. short-term health insurance plan is also an option. Some health insurance companies, such as UnitedHealthcare, work with providers to allow policyholders to use the company’s preferred provider organization (PPO) network.

If you’re wondering whether your domestic health insurance policy will cover you in the U.S., we encourage you to contact your insurance provider for more details. You may need to purchase valid coverage specifically for your U.S. trip if you’re concerned about or foresee needing medical care abroad.

Fixed Medical Insurance

Fixed medical insurance or fixed indemnity insurance pays a predetermined amount of money for specific medical procedures and services. This type of medical insurance plan is limited — no matter what your total bill amounts to, it will not cover more than the agreed-upon amount. Fixed medical insurance plans are usually cheaper than comprehensive policies, which we cover in the next section.

Comprehensive Medical Insurance

Comprehensive medical insurance covers doctor’s visits, hospital care, prescription drugs and more without setting limits on certain services. Note that these plans typically have coverage maximums, deductibles and copays, so you will have to pay a certain amount before your policy covers any medical expenses.

Comprehensive coverage does not have benefit limits based on the type of medical service like fixed medical does, but it will cost you more overall. However, because health care in the U.S. is expensive, you may find comprehensive plans more beneficial in the long run despite being pricier than a fixed plan.

Short-Term vs. Long-Term Health Insurance

Short-term and long-term health insurance plans provide coverage that lasts for a specific period. You can consider travel medical insurance plans short-term policies for U.S. visitors, as they can cover medical expenses incurred during a period lasting less than a year.

If you plan on staying in the U.S. for longer than a year, you may be eligible to purchase a health insurance plan through a domestic provider, depending on your visa. For example, if you have a J-1 or F-1 visa, you may be eligible for a university-sponsored or private health insurance plan. We encourage you to check with the U.S. Department of State when you receive your visa for more on what long-term health insurance options are available to you.

What Does Travel Insurance in the U.S. Cover?

Travel insurance in the U.S. provides a variety of coverages for unexpected events that can affect your travel plans both before and during your trip. Specifics will vary depending on your choice of policy but will likely include some or all of the following coverages:

  • Trip cancellation: If you must cancel your trip for a covered reason, travel insurance can help you recover non-refundable costs such as hotel reservations, airline tickets and more.
  • Trip interruption: If you need to cut your vacation short for a covered reason, travel insurance plans can compensate you for expenses you didn’t use during your trip.
  • Trip and baggage delays: A travel insurance policy can help cover costs you incur if your trip or baggage gets delayed for a covered reason. Most coverage also includes lost or stolen baggage.
  • Emergency medical: Emergency medical coverage can reimburse the cost of necessary treatments if you experience a medical emergency abroad up to a maximum amount.
  • Emergency evacuation and transport: If you need transportation to a medical facility in the U.S. during a medical emergency, this coverage will provide an expense limit for the services. This benefit can also cover emergency evacuations if a natural disaster or political conflict occurs and affects your travels.

How Much Does Travel Health Insurance for U.S. Visitors Cost?

Our research found that the cost of travel insurance for U.S. visitors can range from $96 to $115 . This range is based on quotes gathered for a 30-year-old Australian citizen traveling to the U.S. for 30 days. Each plan we obtained a quote for included a medical maximum of $500,000 with a $250 deductible.

For cost data specific to your travel needs, we encourage you to gather quotes from the providers in this review. The quotes you receive will depend on factors such as your age, plan limits, chosen deductible, number of travelers and more.

How To Use Visitor Health Insurance

If you’ve purchased a visitor medical insurance plan for your stay in the U.S., it’s important you understand how to use it. Healthcare facilities in the U.S., such as doctor’s offices, urgent care locations and emergency rooms, often require you to bring an insurance card with you. This card includes essential information associated with your policy that helps the facility file a claim with your insurance provider. If you have one through your visitor health insurance plan, it is best to have on hand when receiving medical treatment.

Note that your health insurance plan may also require pre-approval before you receive treatment. Your insurance company may verify a procedure or medicine is necessary before agreeing to cover it. This preauthorization usually is not required in an emergency, but your insurance provider may request it in other circumstances.

Many visitor health insurance plans also cover prescription medications. If you’ve been prescribed medicine through a U.S. doctor during a medical visit, a pharmacy may choose to verify your prescription before filling it. This means the pharmacy will contact your healthcare provider with any questions about the prescription being correct. Verification could delay when you receive your medication, but likely won’t take longer than three to10 business days.

Finding Doctors and Hospitals as a Visitor

Most insurers provide online tools that help you find in-network healthcare providers and facilities covered by your insurance policy. Note that you may pay more if you choose to receive care through a doctor or facility that is not considered in-network. Out-of-network providers do not contract with your health insurance plan to provide agreed-upon rates. Unless you have a plan that lets you pick any provider you’d like, you will need to find a provider or facility working with your insurance.

If you want to verify the benefits offered by your insurance plan, contact your insurance provider directly or consult any documentation provided at the time of purchase. Healthcare providers may also take steps to verify your coverage, as it ensures the facility receives payment and lessens the chance of a denied insurance claim.

The cost of medical treatment depends entirely on the type of insurance plan you have. If you’ve purchased a travel medical insurance plan, your provider will cover emergency medical expenses up to a maximum amount. Once you’ve hit that limit, you will have to pay the rest of your bill. If you have a plan with a deductible or co-pay, you must pay that amount before your insurer will cover your expenses.

Paying Medical Bills Without Insurance

If you opt out of medical coverage when visiting the U.S. and end up needing medical care, you will have to cover the entire bill out of pocket. However, you have several options regarding payment. You can contact the debt collector in charge of your bill and work to negotiate the cost of your bill down . You can also set up a payment plan that works with your income and what you can afford.

While these payment options can be helpful, they do not negate the high U.S. healthcare costs, and can still leave you with a substantial bill after a medical crisis. According to a study by the Peterson-KFF Health System Tracker , health expenditures per person in the U.S. in 2022 were over $4,000 more than any other high-income nation. For this reason, we recommend some form of medical coverage to help cover potential emergency expenses when visiting the U.S.

Filing a Claim with Visitor Health Insurance

Filing a claim through a visitor insurance plan or travel medical insurance policy will vary based on your provider. Note that providing proper documentation will help the claims process go smoothly, so it is important to keep track of hospital invoices and other billing forms.

If you have a domestic health insurance policy, the healthcare facility that provided your treatment will file your claim. You’ll receive a bill once your insurance provider processes the claim. On the other hand, travel medical insurance may require you to submit documents proving your claims for emergency medical treatment. Once your claim has been approved, your travel insurance company will reimburse your medical bills.

Where Can You Buy Visitors Insurance?

You can buy visitors’ insurance directly from travel insurance companies, international health insurance companies, university-approved providers and domestic providers, depending on the type of visa required during your stay. If you’re on a tourist visa, you can purchase travel medical insurance covering emergency medical services and transport, if needed, to a healthcare facility. Most travel insurance providers also offer travel healthcare plans that can last up to a year if you are planning multiple trips.

If you’re on a J-1 or F-1 visa and enrolling in a schooling program, contact your university to see if you’re eligible for a sponsored or private health insurance plan. If you need clarification on the available coverage or plan to stay in the U.S. for longer than a year, contact the U.S. Department of State for more information.

The Bottom Line: Do U.S. Visitors Need Health Care Coverage?

Healthcare in the U.S. is expensive. While medical insurance isn’t required for some visitors — such as tourists on a B-2 visa — it’s still worth considering if you’re concerned about an unexpected medical emergency abroad. We encourage you to extensively research your visa type and the coverage available to you before settling on a plan. Understanding the benefits and exclusions of a healthcare coverage plan will ensure there are no surprises if you need medical care during your U.S. trip.

  • The standard plan covers up to $300,000 in emergency evacuation costs.
  • Plans automatically cover 200+ adventurous activities.
  • No Cancel For Any Reason upgrades are available.

Many travel insurance plans contain exclusions for adventure sports activities. If you plan to ski, bungee jump, windsurf or parasail, this might be a plan to consider.

Note that the Standard plan ($81 for our sample trip) provides less coverage than the higher-priced Explorer but can be a good choice for travelers who are satisfied with trip cancellation and interruption coverage of $2,500 or less, do not need rental car damage protection, find the limits to be sufficient and do not need coverage for certain more adventurous activities.

What else makes World Nomads great:

Comprehensive international travel insurance plans.

Coverage available for adventure activities, such as trekking, mountain biking and scuba diving.

Travelex’s plans focus heavily on providing protections that are personalized to your travel style and trip type.

While the company does offer comprehensive plans that include medical benefits, you can also choose between cheaper plans that don’t provide cancellation coverage but do offer protections during your travels.

IMG is also a good option for the budget-minded: the iTravelInsured Lite plan comes to just $59 for our trip to Italy — more than 20% below average.

insurance-product-card-logo

  • In addition Cancel For Any Reason, some plans offer cancel for work reason coverage.
  • Adventure sports-specific coverage is available.
  • Plans have overlap that can be hard to distinguish.
  • Only one plan includes Rental Car Damage coverage available as an add-on.

Tin Leg’s Basic plan came in at $64 for our sample trip, knocking about $10 off the average basic policy cost. Note that you’ll pay a lot more if you shop for the most comprehensive coverage, and there are eight plans to choose from for trips abroad.

The multitude of plans can help you find coverage that fits your needs, but with so many to choose from, deciding can be daunting.

The only real way to figure out your ideal plan is to compare them all, look at the plan details and decide which features and coverage suit you and your travel style best.

Selecting your travel insurance plan with TravelSafe is a fairly straightforward process. The company’s website also makes it easy to visualize how optional add-on elements influence the total cost, displaying the final price as soon as you click the coverage.

However, at $89, the Basic plan was among the more expensive for our trip to Italy.

What else makes TravelSafe great:

As you shop for travel insurance, you’ll find many of the same coverage categories across numerous plans.

Trip cancellation

This covers the prepaid costs you make for your trip in cases when you need to cancel for a covered reason. This coverage helps you recoup upfront costs paid for flights and nonrefundable hotel reservations.

Trip interruption

Trip interruption benefits generally involve disruptions after you depart. It helps reimburse costs incurred for flight delays, cancellations and plenty of other covered disruptions you might encounter during your travels.

This coverage can cover the costs for you to return home or reimburse unexpected expenses like an extra hotel stay, meals and ground transportation.

Trip delay coverage helps cover unexpected costs when your trip is delayed. This is another coverage that helps offset the costs of flight trouble or other travel disruptions.

Note that many policies have a total amount a traveler can claim, with caps on per diem benefits, too.

Cancel For Any Reason

Cancel For Any Reason coverage allows you to recoup some of the upfront costs you paid for a trip even if you’re canceling for a reason not otherwise covered by your standard travel insurance policy.

Typically, adding this protection to your plan costs extra.

Baggage delay

This coverage helps cover the costs of essential items you might need when your luggage is delayed. Think toiletries, clothing and other immediate items you might need if your luggage didn’t make it on your flight.

Many travel insurance plans with baggage delay protection will specify how long (six, 12, 24 hours, etc.) your luggage must be delayed before you can make a claim.

Lost baggage

Used for travelers whose luggage is lost or stolen, this helps recoup the lost value of the items in your bag.

You’ll want to make sure you closely follow the correct procedures for your plan. Many plans include a maximum total amount you can claim under this coverage and a per-item cap.

Travel medical insurance

This covers out-of-pocket medical costs when travelers run into an emergency.

Because many travelers’ health insurance plans don’t cover medical care overseas, travel medical insurance can help offset out-of-pocket health care costs.

In addition to emergency medical coverage, many plans have medical evacuation or repatriation coverage for costs incurred when you must be taken to a hospital or return to your home country because of a medical situation.

Most travel insurance plans cover many trip protections that can help you be prepared for unexpected travel disruptions and expenses.

These coverage are generally aimed at protecting the money you put into your trip, expenses you incur because of travel trouble and costs incurred if you have a medical emergency overseas.

On top of core coverages like trip cancellation and interruption and travel medical coverage, some plans offer add-on options like waivers for pre-existing conditions, rental car collision damage waivers or adventure sports riders. These usually cost extra or must be added within a specified timeframe.

What’s not covered?

Typical travel insurance policies offer coverage for many unforeseen events, but as you research to select a plan, consider your needs. Though every plan differs, there are some commonly excluded coverages.

For instance, you typically can’t get coverage for a named storm if you bought the coverage after the storm was named. In other words, if you have a trip to the Caribbean booked for Sept. 25 and on Sept. 20 a hurricane develops and is named, you generally won’t be able to buy a travel insurance plan Sept. 21 in hopes of getting your money back.

Many plans also don’t cover activities performed under the influence of drugs or alcohol or any extreme sports. If the latter applies to you, you might want to consider a plan with specific coverages for adventure-seekers.

For numerous plans, a few other situations don’t qualify as an acceptable reason to cancel and make a claim, such as fear of travel, medical tourism or pregnancies (unless you booked a trip and bought insurance before you became pregnant or there are complications with the pregnancy). This is where a Cancel For Any Reason add-on to your coverage can be helpful.

You can also run into trouble if you give up on a trip too soon: a minor (or even multihour) flight delay likely isn’t sufficient to cancel your entire trip and get reimbursed through your plan. Be sure to review what requirements your specific plan has when it comes to canceling a trip, claiming trip interruption, etc.

Travel insurance costs vary widely. The final price of your plan will fluctuate based on your age, length of trip and destination.

It will also depend on how much coverage you need, whether you add on specialized policies (like Cancel For Any Reason or pre-existing conditions coverage), whether you plan to participate in extreme sports and other factors.

In our examples above, for instance, the 35-year-old traveler taking a $2,000 trip to Italy would have spent an average $76 for a basic plan to get coverage for things like trip cancellation and interruption, baggage protection, etc. That’s a little less than 4% of the total trip cost — lower than average.

If there were multiple members in a traveling party or if they were going on, say, a rock-climbing or bungee-jumping excursion, the costs would go up.

On average, travel insurance comes to about 5% to 10% of the trip cost. However, considering many of the plans reimburse up to 100% of the trip cost (or more) for disruptions like trip cancellation or interruption, it can be a worthwhile expense if something goes wrong.

It depends. Consider the following factors that might affect your decision: You’re young and healthy, all your bookings are refundable or cancelable without a penalty, your flights are nonstop, you’re not checking bags and a credit card you carry offers some travel protections . In that case, travel insurance might not be necessary.

On the other hand, if you prepaid a large chunk of money for a nonrefundable African safari, you’re going on a Caribbean cruise in the middle of a hurricane season or you’re going somewhere where the cost of health care is high, it’s not a bad idea to buy a travel insurance plan. Here’s how to find the best travel insurance coverage for you.

If you’re thinking of booking a trip and not planning to buy travel insurance, you may want to consider at least booking refundable airfare and not prepaying for hotel, rental car and activity reservations. That way, if something goes wrong, you can cancel without losing any money.

Selecting the best travel insurance policy comes down to your needs, concerns, preferences and budget.

As you book, take a few minutes to consider what most concerns you. Is it getting stranded because of flight trouble? Having the ability to cancel for any reason you see fit without losing money? Getting sick or injured right before departure and needing to postpone the trip? Injuring yourself or falling ill while overseas?

Ultimately, you want a plan that protects you, your money and the large investment in your trip — but doesn’t cost too much, either.

Medical coverage. If your priority is having adequate medical coverage abroad, you might want to look for plans with high limits for medical emergencies and medical evacuation.

Complex travel itinerary. If your itinerary has lots of flight connections, prepaid hotels and deposits for activities you can’t get back, prioritizing a plan with the best coverage for trip cancellations or interruptions may land at the top of your list.

Travel uncertainty. If you’re on the fence about a trip and have nonrefundable reservations, you may want to select a plan with a Cancel For Any Reason coverage option, which can help you recoup about 50% to 75% of the costs. This helps provide peace of mind, placing the decision on whether to travel entirely in your hands.

Car rentals. If you’re renting a car, a collision damage waiver is often worth looking into.

Methodology

We used the following factors to choose insurance providers to highlight:

Breadth of coverage: We looked at how many plans each company offered plus the range of their standard plans.

Depth of coverage: We considered two data points to get a sense of how much each company pays out for common travel issues — the maximum caps for trip cancellation and trip interruption claims.

Cost: By looking at the costs for basic coverage across multiple companies, we determined an average cost for shoppers to benchmark plan prices against.

Customizability: While standard plans can cover a lot of ground, sometimes you need something a little more personal.

Customer satisfaction. Using data from Squaremouth when available, and Google Reviews as a backup, we can give kudos to companies with better track records from their clients.

No, it doesn’t necessarily get more expensive the longer you wait to purchase. However, as you put off buying insurance, you may lose access to potential plans and coverage options.

In general, buying travel insurance within a few days to two weeks of prepaying or making an initial deposit for your trip is your best bet. Assuming you’re not booking last-minute, this will provide you with access to the widest possible range of coverage options. It also helps prevent any medical conditions or storms that pop up between booking and buying a plan from ending up as excluded situations, which won’t be covered by your plan.

But, generally, many plans do allow you to buy coverage quite close to your departure date.

To get the most out of your travel insurance plan, buy it soon after making your initial prepayment or deposit to ensure you have access to the biggest menu of plans possible.

Select a plan that’s comprehensive enough to cover the travel scenarios you’re most concerned about or likely to encounter but not too expensive or laden with protections you’d never likely need.

Whatever your coverage, thoroughly review the plan so you understand what’s covered and what’s not, plus how to adhere to the plan’s rules for making a claim.

Travelers frequently use phrases like “trip insurance” and “travel insurance,” as well as “trip protection,” interchangeably, but they do mean different things, according to Stan Sandberg, founder of insurance comparison site TravelInsurance.com.

Trip insurance, or trip protection, generally refers to predeparture (or preevent) coverage if you need to cancel. You may see these plans sold by airlines, online travel agencies or even ticketed event sellers.

“You could refer to it as the portion that protects the investment in the trip,” Sandberg says.

A travel insurance plan typically includes that — plus more comprehensive benefits to protect you during your trip, from medical coverage to trip delay and lost baggage protections, and many more elements, depending on the plan.

Though travel insurance is typically not required for international trips, your personal circumstances will play a key role in whether it’s a good investment.

For instance, young, healthy travelers with few prepaid trip expenses embarking on a relatively risk-free trip may not see a need to buy a plan.

Older travelers with complicated itineraries who are visiting destinations where they could potentially fall ill or get injured — or who could encounter bad weather or some other disrupting factor along the way — may want to buy coverage.

Consider a few key questions:

How well would your health insurance plan cover you if you needed to visit a hospital overseas?

How much did you prepay for a hotel or rental car?

How much money would you be out if weather or some other flight issue derailed your itinerary?

Could you afford an unexpected night in a city where you have a connecting flight?

Do you already have a credit card that provides some travel protections?

Your answers to these questions can help you decide whether you need travel insurance for your international trip.

In general, buying travel insurance

within a few days to two weeks of prepaying or making an initial deposit

for your trip is your best bet. Assuming you’re not booking last-minute, this will provide you with access to the widest possible range of coverage options. It also helps prevent any medical conditions or storms that pop up between booking and buying a plan from ending up as excluded situations, which won’t be covered by your plan.

Travel Insurance Types: Which One Is Right for You?

There are several types of travel insurance you'll want to evaluate before choosing the policy that's right for you. A few of the most popular types of travel insurance include:

COVID travel insurance Select insurance plans offer some or a combination of the following COVID-19-related protections: coverage for rapid or PCR testing; accommodations if you're required to quarantine during your trip if you test positive for coronavirus; health care; and trip cancellations due to you or a family member testing positive for COVID-19. Read more about the best COVID-19 travel insurance options .

Cancel for any reason insurance Cancel for any reason travel insurance works exactly how it sounds. This type of travel insurance lets you cancel your trip for any reason you want – even if your reason is that you simply decide you no longer want to go. Cancel for any reason travel insurance is typically an add-on you can purchase to go along with other types of travel insurance. For that reason, you will pay more to have this kind of coverage added to your policy.

Also note that this type of coverage typically only reimburses 50% to 80% of your nonrefundable prepaid travel expenses. You'll want to make sure you know exactly how much reimbursement you could qualify for before you invest in this type of policy. Compare the best cancel for any reason travel insurance options here .

International travel insurance Travel insurance is especially useful when traveling internationally, as it can provide medical coverage for emergencies (in some cases for COVID-19) when you're far from home. Depending which international travel insurance plan you choose, this type of travel insurance can also cover lost or delayed luggage, rental cars, travel interruptions or cancellations, and more.

Cheap travel insurance If you want travel insurance but don't want to spend a lot of money, there are plenty of cheap travel insurance options that will offer at least some protections (and peace of mind). These are typically called a company's basic or standard plan; many travel insurance companies even allow you to customize your coverage, spending as little or as much as you want. Explore your options for the cheapest travel insurance here .

Trip cancellation, interruption and delay insurance Trip cancellation coverage can help you get reimbursement for prepaid travel expenses, such as your airfare and cruise fare, if your trip is ultimately canceled for a covered reason. Trip interruption insurance, on the other hand, kicks in to reimburse you if your trip is derailed after it starts. For instance, if you arrived at your destination and became gravely ill, it would cover the cost if you had to cut your trip short.

Trip delay insurance can help you qualify for reimbursement of any unexpected expenses you incur (think: lodging, transportation and food) in the event your trip is delayed for reasons beyond your control, such as your flight being canceled and rebooked for the next day. You will want to save your receipts to substantiate your claim if you have this coverage.

Lost, damaged, delayed or stolen bags or personal belongings Coverage for lost or stolen bags can come in handy if your checked luggage is lost by your airline or your luggage is delayed so long that you have to buy clothing and toiletries for your trip. (add text and link to checked luggage). This type of coverage can kick in to cover the cost to replace lost or stolen items you brought on your trip. It can also provide coverage for the baggage itself. It's even possible that your travel insurance policy will pay for your flight home if damages are caused to your residence and your belongings while you're away, forcing you to return home immediately.

Travel medical insurance If you find yourself sick or injured while you are on vacation, emergency medical coverage can pay for your medical expenses. With that in mind, however, you will need to find out whether the travel medical insurance you buy is primary or secondary. Where a primary policy can be used right away to cover medical bills incurred while you travel, secondary coverage only provides reimbursement after you have exhausted other medical policies you have.

You will also need to know how the travel medical coverage you purchase deals with any preexisting conditions you have, including whether you will have any coverage for preexisting conditions at all. Read more about the best travel medical insurance plans .

Evacuation insurance Imagine you break your leg while on the side of a mountain in some far-flung land without quality health care. Not only would you need travel medical insurance coverage in that case, but you would also need coverage for the exorbitant expense involved in getting you off the side of a mountain and flying you home where you can receive appropriate medical care.

Evacuation coverage can come in handy if you need it, but you will want to make sure any coverage you buy comes with incredibly high limits. According to Squaremouth, an emergency evacuation can easily cost $25,000 in North America and up to $50,000 in Europe, so the site typically suggests customers buy policies with $50,000 to $100,000 in emergency evacuation coverage.

Cruise insurance Travel delays; missed connections, tours or excursions; and cruise ship disablement (when a ship encounters a mechanical issue and is unable to continue on in the journey) are just a few examples why cruise insurance can be a useful protection if you've booked a cruise vacation. Learn more about the top cruise insurance plans here .

Credit card travel insurance It is not uncommon to find credit cards that include trip cancellation and interruption coverage , trip delay insurance, lost or delayed baggage coverage, travel accident insurance, and more. Cards that offer this coverage include popular options like the Chase Sapphire Reserve credit card , the Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card and The Platinum Card from American Express .

Note that owning a credit card with travel insurance protection is not enough for your coverage to count: To take advantage of credit card travel insurance, you must pay for prepaid travel expenses like your airfare, hotel stay or cruise with that specific credit card. Also, note that credit cards with travel insurance have their own list of exclusions to watch out for. Many also require cardholders to pay an annual fee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Travel insurance works similarly to other types of insurance, except that travel insurance intends to cover unforeseeable events. In most cases, you will pay a flat fee for a policy that covers an individual trip and all its components – like airfare, your accommodations and any prepaid excursions. However, if you travel more than a few times per year, and especially if your trips are on the pricey side, you can also buy an annual travel insurance policy.

Benefits vary among travel insurance providers and policies, meaning some travel insurance plans cover more scenarios than others, and some offer higher coverage limits as well. For example, some travel insurance policies might only offer trip cancellation coverage worth up to $2,500 per traveler, while others offer the same benefit worth up to $100,000.

With this in mind, travel insurance works like other insurance plans in the sense that you can buy a basic level of coverage or full coverage that will reimburse you up to incredibly high limits. The choice is up to you, and you should decide based on how much coverage you think you need to feel secure.

However, you should keep in mind that travel insurance cannot cover every potential situation you encounter before or during a trip. Many travel insurance policies list an array of exclusions you should know about, like war or preexisting circumstances. Several policies also offer named peril coverage that only covers the situations specifically outlined in your policy.

Travel insurance may cost anywhere from $50 to $1,500 or more. The cost of travel insurance varies depending on the age of the travelers in your group, the total cost of your trip and other factors. Travel insurance for seniors is typically more costly due to the increased likelihood of health-related issues. The total cost of your trip will also help determine the cost of your travel insurance plan since more expensive trips require higher coverage limits.

Interestingly enough, the length of your trip and the destination you are visiting will not typically affect the cost of travel insurance coverage. Further, your health may not be part of the equation either, and travel insurance companies even refrain from asking health questions when you apply for a travel insurance quote. This doesn't mean that preexisting conditions will be covered, however, so you'll want to check the details.

As an example, a few sample trip insurance quotes for a married couple who are both 40 and live in New York City are below:

  • Travel insurance for an eight-day trip to Florida with a purchase price of $3,500 might run about $85 to $385.
  • Travel insurance for an eight-day trip to Mexico with a purchase price of $5,000 could cost anywhere from $120 to $415.
  • Travel insurance for an eight-day trip to the United Kingdom with a purchase price of $7,500 may cost around $185 to $575.

The price of the plan you select will depend on how much coverage you want. Keep in mind, there are plenty of companies that offer affordable travel insurance plans if your main priority is getting a policy at a budget-friendly price. See the U.S. News list of the Cheapest Travel Insurance Companies .

The best time to buy travel insurance is normally within a few weeks of booking your trip since you may qualify for lower pricing if you book early. Keep in mind, some travel insurance providers allow you to purchase plans until the day before you depart.

Many times, you are given the option to purchase travel insurance when you book your airfare, accommodations or vacation package. Travel insurance and travel protection are frequently offered as add-ons for your trip, meaning you can pay for your vacation and some level of travel insurance at the same time.

However, many people choose to wait to buy travel insurance until after their entire vacation is booked and paid for. This helps travelers tally up all the underlying costs associated with a trip, and then choose their travel insurance provider and the level of coverage they want.

Figuring out where to buy travel insurance may be confusing but you can easily research and purchase travel insurance online these days. Some consumers prefer to shop around with a specific provider, such as Allianz or World Nomads, but you can also shop and compare policies with a travel insurance platform. Popular options include:

  • TravelInsurance.com: TravelInsurance.com offers travel insurance options from more than a dozen vetted insurance providers. Users can read reviews on the various travel insurance providers to find out more about previous travelers' experiences with them. Squaremouth: With Squaremouth, you can enter your trip details and compare more than 90 travel insurance plans from 20-plus providers.
  • InsureMyTrip: InsureMyTrip works similarly, letting you shop around and compare plans from more than 20 travel insurance providers in one place. InsureMyTrip also offers several guarantees, including a Best Price Guarantee, a Best Plan Guarantee and a Money-Back Guarantee that promises a full refund if you decide you no longer need the plan you purchased.

When you need to file a travel insurance claim, you should plan on explaining to your provider what happened to your trip and why you think your policy applies. If you planned to go on a Caribbean cruise, but your husband fell gravely ill the night before you were set to depart, you would need to explain that situation to your travel insurance company. Information you should share with your provider includes the details of why you're making a claim, who was involved and the exact circumstances of your loss.

Documentation is important, and your travel insurance provider will ask for proof of what happened. Required documentation for travel insurance typically includes any proof of a delay, receipts, copies of medical bills and more.

Most travel insurance companies let you file a claim using an online form, but some also allow you to file a claim by phone or via fax. Some travel insurance providers, such as Allianz and Travel Insured International, offer their own mobile apps you can use to buy policies and upload information or documents that substantiate your claim. In any case, you will need to provide the company with proof of your claim and the circumstances that caused it.

If your claim is initially denied, you may also need to answer some questions or submit some additional information that can highlight why you do, in fact, qualify.

Whatever you do, be honest and forthcoming with all the information in your claim. Also, be willing to provide more information or answer any questions when asked.

Travel insurance claims typically take four to six weeks to process once you file with your insurance company. However, with various flight delays and cancellations due to things like extreme weather and pilot shortages, more travelers have begun purchasing travel insurance, encountering trip issues and having to submit claims. The higher volume of claims submitted has resulted in slower turnaround times at some insurance companies.

The longer you take to file your travel insurance claim after a loss, the longer you will be waiting for reimbursement. Also note that, with many travel insurance providers, there is a time limit on how long you can submit claims after a trip. For example, with Allianz Travel Insurance, World Nomads Travel Insurance and Travelex Insurance Services, you have 90 days from the date of your loss to file a claim.

You may be able to expedite the claim if you provide all the required information upfront, whereas the process could drag on longer than it needs to if you delay filing a claim or the company has to follow up with you to get more information.

Travel insurance is never required, and only you can decide whether or not it's right for you. Check out Is Travel Insurance Worth It? to see some common situations where it does (and doesn't) make sense.

Have any questions we’re here to help you, 866-263-0669, is visitor insurance required in the u.s..

V isitor insurance is not required to travel to the U.S. on a B-2 visa. However, healthcare costs in the U.S. are often higher than those in other countries, so not having the proper coverage could leave you to pay thousands of dollars for any necessary medical care.

Purchasing visitor insurance is also a very simple process as no medical exam or medical history review is necessary to get coverage. These plans are designed to protect you from unexpected illnesses or injuries that occur while you are traveling, thus your past health history is not needed.

For answers to any other visitor insurance questions, check out our Visitor Insurance FAQs .

How Much Does Visitors Insurance Cost? Coverage starts at a few dollars per day and increases depending on age and coverage options

IMG’s most popular visitor insurance plan, Patriot America Plus , offers excellent coverage at a competitive price. There are also other product tiers that vary in price depending on your budget and level of benefits. Patriot Platinum Insurance provides the highest level of coverage, while Visitors Care provides a lower priced option with limited benefits. Or you can choose your own visitor insurance plan.

Factors that Determine Cost The cost of a visitor health insurance plan varies based on many factors, including:

Age of traveler.

Old and young visitors alike can find a visitor insurance plan that fits their needs. While premiums become more expensive for older travelers due to increasing risks of health problems, there are still many varying price levels available to fit in your budget.

Area of Coverage

Visiting the United States will result in a higher premium than if traveling to another part of the world due to the high costs of medical care in the country.

View the breakdown of daily and monthly rates in the Patriot America Plus brochure  to get a better idea of how much you can expect to spend for coverage during your trip. For any trip longer than a year, you may also want to explore our international health insurance options .

Coverage Level

Higher maximum limits and lower deductibles will increase your plan costs. Consider how much you could afford in addition to your deductible if something unexpected were to happen while you’re away when choosing the right options for you.

What Does Visitor Health Insurance Cover? Depending on the visitor insurance plan purchased, some of the key benefits provided can include:

Emergency evacuation.

In the event of an emergency medical evacuation, coverage provides evacuation to the nearest qualified medical facility and expenses for reasonable transportation resulting from the evacuation.

Medical Expenses

Coverage for medically necessary expenses resulting from new or unexpected injuries or illnesses including local ambulance, intensive care, emergency room, and more, if needed.

Return of Mortal Remains

Should a covered illness or injury unfortunately result in death, this benefit provides coverage for repatriation of bodily remains or ashes to your home country; or for the preparation, local burial or cremation of your mortal remains, at the place of death.

Pre-Existing Condition Coverage (Varies by Plan)

Visitors Protect provides pre-existing condition coverage for gradually developing conditions or those becoming worse over time. Patriot America Plus and Patriot America Platinum provide coverage for acute onset of pre-existing conditions in the event of a sudden and unexpected outbreak or recurrence of a pre-existing condition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our Visitors Protect plan offers coverage for pre-existing conditions that gradually develop or worsen over time (such as diabetes or high blood pressure). This plan is designed specifically for individuals and families traveling from their home country to the United States, Canada, and Mexico. For more information, view the full Visitors Protect benefits table .

Other IMG international travel medical plans may cover “Acute Onset of Pre-Existing Conditions.” This is different than a more traditional definition of “Pre-Existing Conditions.” Patriot America Plus, Patriot America Platinum, Patriot International, and Visitors Care plans cover acute onset of pre-existing conditions, but they are only covered prior to age 70 and are subject to the language in the insurance plan. Here is our definition of what would be considered an acute onset of a pre-existing condition (according to a sample insurance plan from October 2022):

A sudden and Unexpected outbreak or reoccurrence that is of short duration, is rapidly progressive, and requires urgent medical care. A Pre-existing Condition that is chronic or congenital, or that gradually becomes worse over time is not an Acute Onset of Pre-existing Condition. An Acute Onset of Pre-existing Condition does not include any condition for which, as of the Effective date, the Insured Person (i) knew or reasonably foresaw he/she would receive, (ii) knew or reasonably foresaw he/she should receive, (iii) had scheduled, or (iv) were told that he/she must or should receive, any medical care, drugs or Treatment.

Yes, the insured does not have to be the one that fills out the application. You can purchase a travel medical plan for your parents, friends, or relatives as long as you have the necessary information.

It is best to check all of your existing coverages or insurance policies before traveling abroad so that you're aware of how you're covered and where you have gaps in your existing coverage.

IMG’s international travel medical products are not a substitute for minimum essential coverage that you may need to have under PPACA. If you are a U.S. citizen, national or legal resident alien in the U.S., you will need to maintain minimum essential coverage unless you are exempt. Exemptions include:

  • Individuals not residing in the U.S.
  • Non-U.S. citizens who are “non-resident aliens” (for U.S. income tax purposes).  See Am I a Resident or Non-Resident Alien?
  • Individuals with a coverage gap of less than 3 months
  • Individuals who cannot afford coverage (i.e. required contribution exceeds 8% of household income)
  • Individuals with a religious conscience exemption (applies only to certain faiths)
  • Members of a health care sharing ministry
  • Incarcerated individuals
  • Individuals with income below the tax filing threshold; and
  • Members of Indian tribes

You will not need PPACA coverage for short-term travel to the U.S., unless you are considered an “alien lawfully present” in the U.S. See I am a Non-U.S. citizen covered under a Global Medical Insurance Plan .

In general, PPACA does not govern short-term limited duration insurance, like IMG’s short-term travel medical insurance programs .

However please understand that under PPACA, as of January 1, 2014, extensions of short-term coverage will be limited to less than 12 months to meet the definition of a short-term limited duration plan.

The "Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act," commonly known as PPACA, was first introduced as a measure to deal with rising healthcare costs and numbers of uninsured.

The heart of PPACA consists of three provisions: guaranteed issue (insurers must offer coverage regardless of the applicant's health status or pre-existing conditions), community rating (insurers must offer policies within a given territory at the same price regardless of health status, age, gender, or other factors), and an individual mandate. The individual mandate assures that everyone has a minimum amount of coverage: those above a certain annual income are required to purchase coverage or incur a tax penalty; those who cannot afford it will have their coverage paid for by the government.

As PPACA continues to be implemented and challenged throughout the country, understanding the issues and implications for the international insurance industry and your business becomes all the more important.

Insurance prices are regulated by the government - you won't find a better price on IMG insurance plans anywhere else.

Visitors should plan to get insurance after they plan their trip and receive their visa, but before they arrive in the U.S. The effective dates for coverage should match their visa.

If you were to suffer an injury or get sick while visiting the United States, you might be surprised by the cost of medical care. You may also be surprised by the limited assistance your domestic insurance provider can provide while you're visiting. Visitor insurance coverage in the U.S. helps to ensure that you don't incur any unforeseen expenses, receive excellent care, and get home quickly and safely if anything were to happen during your visit.

If you are applying for coverage under the Patriot series of plans, IMG will process your application and send your ID card and other documents within one business day. If you are applying for coverage under the Global or Group series, IMG will process your application within three to four business days following the receipt of all required information, and your materials will be forwarded the same day coverage is approved. Every attempt will be made to process your application timely. The specific time frame depends largely on the type of coverage for which you are applying.

General Travel and Safety Tips for Visitors to the United States

At tourist-focused attractions, safeguard your valuables as you would in any destination. This includes locking your car, keeping valuables such as extra cash and your passport in your hotel safe, and wearing your wallet in a front-facing, enclosed pocket or bag.

As one of the largest countries in the world, the United States is home to nearly every kind of ecosystem. Travelers should take heed of weather warnings and climate advisories for each state they are visiting. In some cases, this means dressing and planning appropriately for the intense heat or deep winter chill. In other circumstances, it may involve avoiding all non-essential travel to regions experiencing wildfires or hurricanes.

Alcohol consumption is more regulated in the US than in many parts of the world. Drinking is prohibited for anyone under 21 years old. It is common for servers to request identification from patrons of any age. For the most part, you cannot drink in public areas such as streets and parks, and many small restaurants, including fast food establishments, do not have a license to sell liquor.

Since the 2016 election, there has been an increase in hate crimes in the United States. Travelers who are concerned about their safety based on religion, ethnicity, or gender will find valuable resources from the Southern Poverty Law Center and the American Civil Liberties Union . Stringent travel restrictions apply to travelers from many Muslim-majority countries, including Iran, Libya, Syria, Yemen, Somalia, and Chad. As these travel restrictions are in a state of uncertainty due to pending court decisions, travelers from these countries should speak to the nearest American embassy about their travel status.

Emergency Numbers in the USA

All emergency services use the same number, so all you have to do is call 911. If you are using a cell phone, you will have to explain where you are so they can direct you to the closest response team:

  • Police – 911
  • Ambulance – 911
  • Fire Service – 911

Enjoying Safe Travel in America

Exploring the great outdoors is one of the most popular travel activities for visitors to the United States. But before you strap on your skis, hiking boots, or snorkel mask, make sure you are prepared for outdoor adventure. Double-check that your insurance covers your activities, touch base with a park ranger to discuss safety concerns, and carry the right gear.

Travelers with dietary restrictions will find that there is a high level of allergy awareness in all parts of the United States. Even small restaurants will be able to accommodate common food allergies  – though it always helps to give the kitchen notice. In larger cities vegetarian, vegan, and raw food is widely available.

Vaccinations Required When Traveling to America

According to the CDC : “There are no vaccination requirements for visitors to the United States, and US residents traveling abroad do not need any vaccines to reenter the United States. For information on US-based infectious disease outbreaks currently being reported by the CDC, please see the CDC Current Outbreak List .” However, there are some vaccinations (see list below) that make sense for all travelers coming to the USA – so use your judgment.  Specifically, you should be covered for any current outbreaks, when possible.

Starting in 2009, the following vaccines for the listed illnesses/diseases are required for U.S. immigration. (This applies to visitors applying for an immigrant visa.)

  • Tetanus and diphtheria
  • Haemophilus influenzae  type B (Hib)
  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • Meningococcal disease
  • Pneumococcal disease
  • Seasonal influenza

Is a Travel Visa Required to Enter the USA

If you are planning to visit the USA, and not planning to move here, you typically will be required to apply for and obtain a “visitor visa”. Some visitors, from select countries, may not need a visa. There are a variety of visa categories (for students, short-term workers, travel, etc. You should make sure to research the options and select the appropriate category when applying. There are two primary categories: a nonimmigrant visa , for temporary stay, or an immigrant visa for permanent residence. You will be required to show this visa upon entry to the United States port-of-entry and you will then request permission of the U.S. immigration inspector to enter the U.S. For more details, visit the US Dept. of State website.

Plan Ahead for Your Visit to the US

Traveling to the USA always feels so exciting. But this travel requires the same level of preparation as any other trip. You want to make sure you have the right insurance coverage for your lifestyle.

Take time to consider your itinerary. Will you be making quick trips to neighboring countries? Or will your trip aggravate any pre-existing conditions? Any chance of participating in extreme sports or adventure travel? These are all important things to review with your insurance provider.

This becomes vital should the traveler be forced to Quarantine as a result of a positive Covid test. Travelers can find the cheapest Covid travel insurance available using the tools in our website.

Cruise travel insurance for US citizen

Cruise travel insurance for pre-existing coverage, travel health insurance for us citizens visiting usa, travel insurance for us citizens traveling to usa.

Normally, insurers do not want to cover US citizens in the US because laws regarding domestic coverage are completely different than those which only cover short term travelers. If you are a US citizen, most policies will have you enter the US as your "home" country.

If the US is your home country, then you will not be eligible for coverage in the US. However, two companies namely International Medical Group (IMG) allow you to distinguish your "residence" country from your "destination" country while still entering your country of citizenship as US.

Flu Shot Coverage in Travel insurance

Flu shot is a preventive care which is taken annually or as prescribed by the Physician. Flu shots act as preventive care before a person contracts influenza (flu). Most insurance providers do not cover preventive care in the travel insurance policy. Unless mentioned in the policy documents.

I have a travel insurance policy, is the flu shot covered in it?

Flu shot is preventive care hence it is not covered automatically if there is an existing travel insurance policy active, unless mentioned in the policy documents. Travelers can check with the insurance providers for more clarity.

I Am travelling for a week and if I get the flu during my travel will I be covered for the flu?

As long as travelers contract the flu after the inception date of the policy then it will be covered as a fresh illness. Any Flu which has been there prior to the start date of the travel insurance policy may not be covered.

US travel insurance for US citizens visiting USA

Are you a US citizen and living outside the United States? You might be in a conundrum as well as medical insurance coverage when you are visiting the US? This is because travel insurance plans or health medical insurance plans that are usually meant to cover people traveling outside their home country. In this context, one assumes that US citizens live in the United States.

Therefore we see the brochure has the eligibility wording stating "US citizens traveling outside US" or "Non US citizens coming to the US or any other country"... This sadly excludes US citizens who live overseas and want to visit the US. However as we know well, there are many US citizens who live, work or study overseas.

US citizens viviting USA

They visit the US for a short period of time during holidays, Christmas, Thanksgiving, vacation, visiting family and friends…and at the end of the short period of time they go back to the country that they live in. Some travel insurance companies assume that US is the home country for US citizens regardless of where they live.

The insurance plans offered by these companies do not satisfy the need of US citizens visiting the US. In this situation even US domestic health insurance companies do not help as they offer short term insurance only for US residents and for longer time periods like 3 months, 6 months, 1 year or 2 years.

However there are some popular US travel insurance plans that offer best medical insurance for USA citizen visiting to USA for a short term. These plans are available to them as long as they are temporarily visiting US and are returning to their home country outside the US.

Why is travel insurance for USA so expensive?

There is no denying that travel insurance to USA is unfortunately very expensive. The main reason for this is simply because the cost of healthcare in the USA is very expensive and the travel insurance USA costs are directly related to the healthcare costs. One more factor for some USA travel insurance plans to be very expensive is that there are specially designed travel insurance for USA plans available for older travelers, with higher medical coverage as well as some plans with coverage for pre-existing ailments.

Patriot America Plus and Patriot Platinum America can be used by US citizens as long as they maintain a residence outside the US and are visiting the country for a short visit. The Patriot America Plus insurance plan offered by IMG is specifically designed for short term visitors to USA and is a hugely popular choice among tourists to America. The policy covers "acute onset of pre-existing conditions" up to the maximum of the plan purchased for persons under 70 years of age.

The company recently added the benefit of copays of $25 for urgent care centers and $15 for walk-in clinics which are paid INSTEAD of the deductible each time these facilities are used. There is a sports rider that can be added for additional cost to cover skiing, snorkeling, surfing, and other common recreational sports. Persons under 70 years of age can get up to $1 million maximum coverage. The Patriot America plans also provide coverage for COVID19!

Travel medical insurance for Puerto Ricans visiting mainland United States

Most residents of Puerto Rico are US citizens, and as US citizens traveling to the US, the available insurance options are extremely limited. One of the best available option is the Round Trip Series offered by Seven Corners . The Round Trip Series offers three levels of coverage: Basic and Choice .

Puerto Ricans can insure trips abroad as well as away from home in the US. The Round Trip insurance covers travelers while on the trip as well as protection for a set amount of non-reimbursed expenses for your trip. The Round Trip plan also have pre-existing condition coverage; please see the details for each level of the plan. You can compare the Seven Corners Round Trip plans here.

The UK is part of the visa waiver programme with the USA, meaning UK citizens with a valid passport don’t need a visa to travel to the USA. Emergency numbers in USA?

You should call 911 in an emergency. You can use this number to request assistance from all emergency services, including the police, the fire department or an ambulance.

What if I have to go to hospital in the USA?

Medical costs in the USA are famously expensive. Most hospitals are large and privately run. If your medical emergency isn’t serious enough to warrant a visit to the hospital, you may be able to contact the hospital and ask for a local physician, which may offer cheaper treatment.

If a hospital discovers you have no insurance, they may transfer you to a welfare hospital if one is nearby – there aren’t many available, however, especially in more rural areas, and may have very long waiting times. For more information on medical travel insurance visit our page, or contact us online .

Are there any laws I should be aware of?

The laws of the USA vary depending on which state you’re in. But it’s always best to read about the local laws and customs to make sure you’re always within your rights. Find out more about USA local laws here .

What are crime rates like in the USA?

The USA is a safe country to visit, but the inner cities have the same dangers as in other countries. Crime can be a reality in these areas, especially at night, so take precautions to protect yourself against theft or other criminal activity. The USA has a relatively high rate of violent crime in the states bordering Mexico – Arizona, California, New Mexico and Texas.

Who do I call if I’ve been a victim of crime?

You can call 911 to report a crime or request emergency assistance. There may also be a local police presence.

Interesting facts about USA

  • The US has a lot of people in jail – a quarter of the world’s total prison population. The “three strikes” law means at least 25 years if you’re convicted of three felonies. Curtis Wilkerson got 25 years in 1995 for shoplifting a pair of socks.

Is Travel Insurance Worth It? Evaluating the Value and Benefits

Our experts answer readers' insurance questions and write unbiased product reviews ( here's how we assess insurance products ). In some cases, we receive a commission from our partners ; however, our opinions are our own.

  • Travel insurance covers risks like trip cancellations, health emergencies, and lost luggage.
  • Travel insurance costs can range from 4% to 12% of your total trip cost.
  • Travel insurance is best for trips that are long, expensive, nonrefundable, and international.

Vacations can be very expensive. If you're paying a lot for yours, you might wonder if you should purchase travel insurance, especially when some costs are nonrefundable.

The answer isn't always cut-and-dried. Travel insurance isn't necessary for everyone. Whether you need it will depend on a variety of factors. Here are some key points to consider when deciding if travel insurance suits you.

Introduction to travel insurance

When planning a trip, it's essential to think about how you'll protect yourself from the unexpected. That's where travel insurance comes in. It can cover various risks like loss of personal belongings, checked baggage, and more. With the appropriate coverage, you can nullify or mitigate the potential losses. "Plain and simple, travel insurance is a layer of protection against financial loss," says Brad Cummins, owner and principal agent for Insurance Geek , an insurance comparison platform. "Whether it be lost luggage or a lost passport, travel insurance will cover the extra costs during these unfortunate events."

Benefits of travel insurance

Protection against unforeseen cancellation.

One of the top reasons to acquire travel insurance is to cover potential losses from trip cancellations. When canceling a trip due to a covered cause, travel insurance will reimburse you for prepaid, nonrefundable expenses.

Some covered causes for travel cancellations include:

  • Sickness, injury, or death of traveler or family member of traveler
  • Inclement weather
  • Unexpected work or layoffs
  • Terrorist incidents in a travel location

Some travel insurance covers trip cancellations regardless of the reason. However, you make certain trade-offs when you enroll in a  "Cancel for Any Reason" (CFAR) insurance policy . These policies are more expensive and may only refund a percentage of your trip's cost. You can find our guide on the best CFAR travel insurance  here.

Financial security and peace of mind

While your travel insurance covers any unforeseen issues before your trip, it continues to cover you even after your flight has taken off.

For example, you don't have to be as anxious at baggage claim when your fellow passengers have claimed their luggage and yours hasn't come out yet. Travel insurance offers lost luggage protection and can cover any necessary purchases while you wait for your late luggage to arrive, such as toiletries and a change of clothes.

Medical coverage on travel insurance  can also offer peace of mind as most US health insurers don't provide coverage when you're abroad. A comprehensive travel insurance plan will cover you in an unexpected accident or emergency so you can seek medical attention for an injury sustained while traveling without worrying about mounting medical bills.

Evaluating the cost of travel insurance

The average cost of travel insurance is 5%-6% of your total trip cost. However, the exact cost will vary based on factors such as your age, travel destination, and where you live, and can be as little as 4% of your trip cost or as high as 12% of your trip cost.

If you're wondering whether travel insurance is worth it, you're not alone. There are a few things to consider. If an emergency arises on your trip, travel insurance can reimburse part or all of your vacation expenditure. However, this will depend on factors such as your trip type and whether it's refundable.

Cost vs. potential savings

In general, travel insurance is worth it if you're concerned about losing money if your trip is called off or delayed or if you're worried about medical bills while traveling. However, conducting thorough research and understanding the costs and coverage provided is critical before purchasing a policy.

For example, older travelers or those with pre-existing medical conditions may pay more for their insurance. Similarly, those traveling to high-risk destinations or participating in high-risk activities may also face higher premiums.

Ultimately, it's important to shop around and compare quotes from different travel insurance companies to find the best coverage and rate for your needs. You can find our picks for the best travel insurance companies here.

Cost-benefit analysis for different trip types

Travel insurance may be a wise investment if you've already paid for your and can't change or cancel your trip without penalty. Suppose your trip is canceled or disrupted due to a covered cause. In that case, travel insurance will cover the trip's cost and any other nonrefundable expenditures up to a pre-determined amount.

If you're heading to a country where your health coverage doesn't apply, or if you don't have any health insurance at all, travel insurance might provide the protection you need. Travel insurance can also assist you in case of medical emergencies. It's vital to understand that not all travel insurance policies are created equal. Be sure to carefully study the details and understand what is and isn't covered before purchasing one.

Scenarios where travel insurance is essential

Expensive vacations and long-term travel.

It's a good idea to insure trips with a high, nonrefundable price tag because you'll never forgive yourself if your expensive, once-in-a-lifetime trip gets canceled and your money and planning go down the drain. For these vacations, you'll want to find a policy that covers 100% of expenses.

Similarly, if you have long-term travel plans, you'll want to have a policy that protects against travel interruption in case something cuts your plans short. You'll also want medical coverage during extended stay outside the country.

High-risk destinations and activities

High-risk destinations include regions facing political instability, war zones, and areas prone to natural disasters. Travelers headed to these areas should look into travel insurance in case their trip is canceled due to an unforeseen event.

Additionally, certain areas are known for the thrilling activities they offer, like skydiving and bungee jumping. If you have extreme sports on your itinerary or believe you might build up the courage to plunge down a canyon, you may want to invest in a travel insurance policy. Keep in mind that some travel insurance policies don't cover high-risk activities, so shop carefully.

When travel insurance may not be necessary

Low-risk, short, or domestic trips.

There are also some situations in which you might not need travel insurance. If you are traveling within the US, you do not need travel insurance for health reasons since most health insurance plans will cover you even if you're not in your home state.

Additionally, travel insurance may not be necessary if you're only traveling over the weekend or exclusively booked refundable experiences.

Making an informed decision

There are a few key considerations when buying a travel insurance policy. The cost of the policy is one factor, but it's also important to look at the coverage limits and what is included and excluded in the policy. Be sure to read the fine print carefully and compare policies between different companies.

It's also important to consider the purpose of your travel insurance policy. If you're going on a trip where you'll be doing adventurous activities, ensure your policy covers those activities. Finally, remember that travel insurance is there to protect you in case something goes wrong on your trip, so don't hesitate to use it if you need to.

If you decide that you need travel insurance, here are a few things to keep in mind when shopping for a policy:

  • Read the fine print of any policy you are considering to understand what is and is not covered. This is especially important for those who want to add special coverage options.
  • Compare policies from different providers to find the best coverage at the best price.
  • Purchase your policy well in advance of your trip so that you are covered in case of any unforeseen circumstances.
  • Ensure you're covered for pre-existing conditions because a number of policies will exclude pre-existing conditions if you don't pay extra for a waiver or additional coverage.

Buying travel insurance can be a pretty quick and painless process, thanks to insurance aggregator sites like SquareMouth .

Using SquareMouth is one of the easiest ways to see multiple coverage options simultaneously. Once you've entered some personal details and information regarding your trip, you'll see a variety of insurance providers and plans from which to choose.

Assessing personal and trip risks

The first consideration you should factor into travel insurance is how much of your trip is already paid for. If you've prepaid for most or all of your travel expenses, you may want to purchase travel insurance if you have to cancel.

Another thing to consider is where you will be traveling. If you are visiting multiple countries, getting insurance that covers you in all of them might be a good idea.

Your age and overall health can also determine whether you need travel insurance. Suppose you are older or have pre-existing medical conditions, for example. In that case, it might be a good idea to purchase travel insurance if you need to cancel your trip or incur unexpected medical expenses.

Lastly, the value of your luggage can also be a factor to consider. If you plan to bring expensive items with you on your trip, it might be worth purchasing travel insurance to cover lost or stolen luggage.

Reviewing policy options and exclusions

When it comes to travel insurance, the ease of use will depend on the provider you choose. If you're working with a reputable insurer, then the process should be relatively straightforward. However, it's still important to understand what is and isn't included in your policy before you purchase it. This way, you can be sure that you're getting the coverage you need and that you won't be caught off guard by any fine print.

Travel insurance isn't necessary for everyone or every trip. But it can bring a lot of peace of mind during your travels and can certainly translate into significant savings if you're faced with a medical emergency while on your trip. It's best to do your research, compare plans, and understand your own level of risk when it comes to deciding whether or not to purchase coverage.

Travel insurance frequently asked questions

Travel insurance is highly recommended for trips that are long and expensive. For example, you should buy travel insurance for any international trips, cruises, adventure travels, and trips with significant pre-paid expenses.

To say that travel insurance will save you money in the long run isn't entirely accurate. Travel insurance will save you money when things go wrong, but it won't save you any money if your trip goes smoothly.

Short domestic trips don't necessitate travel insurance. Most health insurance policies cover you from state to state, so unless you're worried about unexpected cancellations, travel insurance isn't a must-have.

Travel insurance policies commonly exclude coverage for pre-existing medical conditions, extreme sports injuries, and travel to high-risk countries.

Cost-benefit considerations should include the total cost of your trip, the refundability of your expenses, your destination's healthcare costs, and your personal health and travel risks.

FAQ About Travel Insurance from Canada to the US

Travel insurance typically covers trip cancellation, trip interruption, lost or stolen luggage, travel delay, and emergency evacuation. Some travel insurance packages also cover medical-related incidents too. However, remember that the exact coverage depends on the insurance policy.

No, travel insurance is not mandatory for travel to the USA. However, regardless of whether or not it's legally required, it's always a good idea to take our health insurance before you travel to the US. For what's usually an affordable cost, taking out travel insurance will mitigate most or all of the risk of financial damage if you run into any unexpected troubles during your trip abroad.

Yes, medical travel insurance is almost always worth it, and we recommend taking out travel insurance whenever visiting a foreign country. Taking out travel insurance will mitigate some or all of the risk of covering those costs yourself in case you need medical attention during your stay. In general, we recommend VisitorsCoverage to visitors worldwide because it offers excellent value for money and well-rounded travel and medical benefits in its large catalogue of plans.

Health insurance doesn't cover normal holiday expenses, such as coverage for missed flights and hotels, but in case you run into medical trouble while abroad, it may cover some or all of your doctor or hospital expenses while overseas. However, not all health insurance providers and plans offer coverage to customers while abroad, and that's why it's generally best to take out travel insurance whenever you travel.

Although there's overlap, health and travel insurance are not exactly the same. Health insurance covers some or all of the cost of medical expenses (e.g. emergency treatment, doctor's visits, etc.) while travel insurance covers non-medical costs that are commonly associated with traveling (e.g. coverage for missed flights, stolen or lost personal belongings, etc.).

The cost of travel insurance depends on several factors, such as the length of the trip, the destination, the age of the insured, and the level of coverage desired. On average, travel insurance can cost anywhere between 3% and 10% of the total cost of the trip.

A single-trip travel insurance policy covers a specific trip, while an annual one covers multiple trips taken within a one-year period. An annual policy may be more cost-effective for frequent tourists.

Yes, you can sometimes purchase travel insurance after starting your trip, but it is best to buy it before the trip begins to ensure maximum coverage. If you do need to buy insurance after you've started your trip, we recommend VisitorsCoverage , which offers a wide catalogue of online trip and medical insurance policies, most of which can be booked with immediate effect. Check out our guide to buying travel insurance late to learn more.

Yes, you can most certainly purchase travel insurance for a trip that has already been booked, although we recommend purchasing insurance as soon as possible aftwerwards to ensure all coverage is in place before your journey begins. Do I Need Additional Health Coverage if I Travel Internationally?

Y ou will likely need additional health coverage if you plan on traveling outside of the United States since Affordable Care Act (ACA) Marketplace health plans are not required to include international travel coverage. Multiple insurance carriers sell separate travel insurance that can cover emergency health care services and potentially other treatments you need while in a foreign country.

Keep reading to find out how you can know when your health insurance covers international travel and what types of coverage can protect you as you travel abroad.

On This Page

Does my health insurance cover international travel, what won’t be covered by health insurance during international travel, how much does it cost to get medical insurance for international trips, how do i know if an international medical facility is in my network, how to get medical coverage when you travel internationally, how to file a claim for medical care during international travel.

ACA-compliant health insurance plans aren’t required to cover you during international travel, so you should contact your insurer before you leave to find out if any out-of-country medical services you receive would be covered. Keep in mind that some health plans don’t cover out-of-network care at all, meaning you would be fully on the hook for medical expenses you incur while visiting a foreign hospital that isn’t in your plan’s network.

Meanwhile, plans that do cover out-of-network care will usually require you to pay a greater portion of the costs through coinsurance or copays . As a result, there’s a good chance you will have to pay more for international treatments even if your health insurance company agrees to cover them.

Fortunately, numerous companies sell supplemental health insurance products that can provide more comprehensive health coverage while you are traveling abroad. For example, medical evacuation insurance can cover the costs of transportation to a medical facility that can provide you with appropriate care in an emergency. This type of coverage may automatically be included in a travel health insurance plan, which can also cover the emergency care itself and potentially even regular treatments related to a preexisting condition. [1]

Does Medicare Cover International Travel?

Medicare only covers treatments at foreign hospitals in specific situations where they are closer to you than an American health care facility. For example, if you live in the United States near the border of Mexico or experience a medical emergency near the border, Medicare may cover treatments at a Mexican hospital. Similarly, you may be covered if you visit a Canadian hospital after experiencing a medical emergency on your way to Alaska. [2]

Meanwhile, Medicare will only cover care you receive on a cruise ship if the ship is within six hours of an American port. Conversely, some Medicare Advantage plans and most Medigap plans include international travel coverage. [2]

Specifically, a Medigap plan can cover 80% of the costs for medically necessary care in foreign countries that Original Medicare won’t cover as long as you have met a $250 deductible and receive the care within 60 days of starting your trip. Note that Medigap foreign travel emergency coverage comes with a $50,000 lifetime limit. [2]

Does Medicaid Cover International Travel?

Medicaid generally doesn’t cover medical expenses you incur overseas. [1] In fact, you may have limited coverage anywhere outside of your home state since Medicaid benefits are largely determined at the state level. For example, North Carolina Medicaid only covers out-of-state routine care if you receive it in Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee or Virginia within 40 miles of the North Carolina border, exclusively covers medically necessary care elsewhere in the United States and doesn’t provide any coverage outside of the country. [3]

Even if you purchase a separate travel health insurance plan, your insurer likely won’t cover preventive services and other kinds of routine care. [4] You may need to purchase a long-term international health plan to receive coverage for these kinds of services outside of the United States.

Instead, travel medical insurance predominantly provides coverage for emergency situations such as slipping and breaking your leg while rock climbing, getting sick after a spider bites you on a hike or requiring a medevac helicopter after you have a heart attack in a remote location.

The average cost of health insurance for international travel ranges from $40 to $80, with factors like the length of your trip and the coverage limits you select influencing your rates. [4] Meanwhile, you will usually have to pay 5% to 7% of the cost of your entire trip for a trip insurance package that includes coverage for emergency medical care, canceled flights, trip interruption and lost or damaged luggage. [5]

The best way to know if a medical provider is in your network or if your insurance company will otherwise cover care from that provider is to contact your insurer in advance to get your treatment preapproved.

Keep in mind that many American insurance carriers don’t contract with international medical facilities at all.

Nevertheless, there are some health insurance companies with networks that extend beyond the United States. For example, Cigna ’s network includes 1.5 million hospitals and health care professionals throughout the world, while Blue Cross Blue Shield ’s GeoBlue contracts with more than 1.7 million medical providers globally. [6][7]

You may be able to buy coverage for your vacation from either a company that specializes in travel insurance or a traditional health insurance carrier that offers international coverage. It’s recommended that you obtain quotes from three to five different companies so you can compare all of your options to find the best deal.

To make this process as simple as possible, consider using an online insurance marketplace like SmartFinancial. We can take information about your coverage needs and budget from a brief questionnaire and match you up with insurance agents who may be able to help you find a health plan with built-in travel coverage. If you’re interested in receiving free health insurance quotes today, simply enter your zip code below.

Claim filing processes can vary from company to company but you will generally need to fill out your insurer’s designated claim form and provide an itemized bill listing all of the treatments you were charged for along with other documents showing information such as where you were treated and what injury or sickness you were treated for.

You should be aware that foreign health care providers generally don’t accept American insurance and won’t file claims on your behalf. [4] As a result, even if your health plan covers international care, you will likely have to pay for your treatments out of pocket initially and then file an insurance claim yourself to be reimbursed by your insurer.

Do I need additional medical insurance when traveling abroad?

ACA-compliant health plans are not required to cover you while you’re traveling abroad, so you may need to purchase additional travel medical insurance.

Does Medicare cover international travel?

Medicare covers international travel in extremely limited circumstances such as when you are on a cruise ship less than six hours away from an American port. However, you may be able to get broader travel health coverage through a Medicare Advantage or Medicare Supplement plan. [2]

Do I need travel insurance if I have health insurance?

Many American health insurance plans don’t cover out-of-network care and don’t include foreign hospitals in their networks, so you may need separate travel health insurance to receive coverage for international care.

These versatile, durable sandals are perfect for adventure travel and water activities, as the rubber outsoles give you traction in various types of terrain and the contoured arch support cradles your feet.

Chacos have adjustable straps that wrap around your feet, but you can choose from different strap widths based on your preference. Some Chacos, such as the ZX/2 and Z/2 styles, have a toe loop for a bit more support, while the ZX/1 and Z/1 sandals do not have one. Another consideration is how much cushioning you want: Unlike the Classic options, the Cloud styles are equipped with cushioning.

I've had my pair of ZX/1 Cloud Chacos for years and they're my favorite hiking sandal. They're durable, comfortable and stylish, and they're especially handy when water-based activities are involved. For example, my Chacos were perfect for walking along the rocky bottoms of the cenotes (swimming holes) I explored on a recent trip to Mexico. – Leilani Osmundson , Senior Digital Producer

HOKA shoes are the most comfortable shoes I've ever owned. They are great whether you're running a 10K or running around all day sightseeing on vacation. I've had several pairs, my favorite of which is the Women's Bondi 8. I love the fun colors, too! I also like supporting them because they intentionally work on reducing their environmental impact. – Sharael Kolberg , Travel Contributor

What makes them stand out: These beloved running shoes are named for the director of product management at Brooks, who was known for going on nighttime runs, but they're also a great option for walking and sightseeing. You can also choose from four width sizes between narrow and extra wide – not to mention dozens of color combinations.

These are running shoes but I wear them everywhere, from half-marathons to surviving Disney and Universal. Seriously, I wear them 90% of the time I step outside. – Leilani Osmundson

The men's sizing runs from 7 to 16, while women's sizes span 5 to 13. This shoe is breathable and supportive with an air mesh upper and a Fresh Foam X midsole. This shoe also has a Seal of Acceptance from the American Podiatric Medical Association because it promotes good foot health.

What makes them stand out: For a classic white sneaker that you can wear for a variety of occasions, these adidas tennis shoes are a great option. Your feet are cushioned by a Cloudfoam Comfort sockliner, and the rubber outsole gives you good traction. The synthetic leather upper is made partly from recycled materials as well. Choose from several different colors for the stripes on the sides of these white shoes.

I panic-bought these white sneakers to go with various outfits before a trip to Europe. Even though I had no time to break them in, they were instantly comfortable. These white sneakers lasted for miles as I walked all around London for days, and they matched well with everything. The exterior is easily wipeable whenever they get a little dirty. I couldn't believe how immediately comfortable they were and how I got no blisters or sore feet as I wore them on my trip. They're now one of my go-to everyday shoes as well for running errands. – Erin Evans

Frequently Asked Questions

No matter where in the world you want to go, your travels will likely involve some amount of walking as you explore new cities and natural wonders.

"The dirty little secret of travel, especially air travel, is the true amount of walking involved just getting to the destination," says board-certified podiatrist Ernest L. Isaacson, of Paragon Podiatry . "For instance, airports are cavernously large, and it's not unusual to walk a mile or more just to get to the gate after spending what can seem like an eternity in a long security line."

If you don't bring the right footwear, walking can become painful, limiting what you're able to do on your vacation.

"Investing in high-quality shoes ensures durability, support, and overall foot health during your travels," says Maggie Trevillion, founder of Callen Olive, a luxury leg and foot skincare brand, and podiatrist at Walk This Way Podiatry . "Quality shoes are designed to withstand the rigors of exploration, offering better cushioning, stability and traction. They can help prevent foot fatigue, blisters and other discomforts, allowing you to explore your destination with confidence and gusto."

Quality walking shoes are important for more than just your feet, too: "Wearing proper walking shoes with adequate cushioning and support helps to distribute the body's weight evenly, reducing the strain on our feet, ankles, knees and hips," according to Daniel Pledger, podiatrist and founder of ePodiatrists .

When weighing your options, Trevillion recommends looking for the following features:

  • Comfort , including cushioning and arch support
  • Breathable and durable material , with features like sturdy outsoles
  • Lightweight build , for easy packing
  • Traction , with rubber or multidirectional lug soles to give you a good grip
  • Versatility , so you can use one pair of shoes in different environments

Pledger emphasizes the importance of arch support in your walking shoes. "This helps to maintain the natural alignment of the foot and reduces the risk of arch-related problems like plantar fasciitis," he says. He also recommends a well-cushioned midsole to absorb the impact as you walk; a supportive heel counter for stability; and a flexible outsole, which will allow for natural foot movement.

Follow your instincts as you try on shoes. "The shoe that feels most comfortable in the store is probably the best shoe, whatever style that may be," Isaacson says. "And if it's not comfortable in the store it's not going to magically conform to the foot in the bag on the way home."

With so many shoe brands on the market, your choice will ultimately come down to personal preference and foot characteristics. There is no one shoe that will work for every foot.

Pledger's patients, for example, offer consistent positive feedback for shoes from New Balance, ECCO and Merrell. Even still, "I would caution against blindly following brand recommendations without trying on the shoes and assessing their fit and feel," Pledger says.

Trevillion also recommends ECCO and New Balance, adding that KEEN and Salomon also have great options for challenging terrain. These brands are all praised by travelers worldwide, but don't be discouraged if the shoes that work for others just don't fit your shoe preferences. At the end of the day, you're the one who has to wear them, so try out different options if you need to and discover what features suit you best.

When searching for your perfect walking shoe, look at the following:

  • Outsole: This is the bottom of the shoe that will have direct contact with the surface you are walking on. It should be flexible and shock-absorbing. A sturdier outsole will provide more stability for a variety of pavements.
  • Insole: This is the interior bottom of the shoe. You'll want a comfortable fabric to prevent your foot from rubbing, as well as cushioning and support.
  • Midsole: This is the area inside the shoe where the arch of your foot rests. Having a strong foundation here is key for foot alignment and proper support.
  • Upper: This refers to the fabric and construction of the portion of the shoe that will cover the top and sides of your foot. The fabric type will determine breathability, durability and if it will repel water.
  • Heel cup: This is the area where your heel sits inside the shoe. It should be secure for walking and may have additional cushioning for shock absorption.
