Explore the Wilderness of Gir National Park with Safari Rides

Enjoying thrilling safaris to discover uncharted regions and landscapes of Gir National Park is undeniably the best experience. This wildlife encounter activity includes mother nature’s aroma and the sounds of chirping birds.

If you’re considering a safari, Gujarat should be on your list. The expansive terrains of Gujarat are ideal for enjoying the charms and pleasures of a safari because they are blessed with rich biodiversity and a wide range of flora and wildlife.

The Gir Forest National Park Jeep Safari is the only safari available at Core Gir Zone, drawing tourists from worldwide. Gir, the majestic Asiatic Lion’s sole habitat on earth, never ceases to astound and enthrall nature lovers.

It is a once-in-a-lifetime experience to see the king of the jungle flaunting in all its splendor at his native home. Jeeps and woodland guides are available from the forest department. Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary region, also known as Sasan Gir, was constructed next to Talaja Gir to safeguard Asiatic lions, leopards, and antelopes.

Besides these, you can easily see the jungle cat, the striped hyena, the golden jackal, the Bengal fox, the Indian gray mongoose, the four-horned antelope, the chinkara, and the wild boar are among these. In addition, crocodiles, cobras, monitor lizards, and pythons reside in the Sanctuary. Thanks to Gir’s great diversity, you will undoubtedly return home with tales of seeing these beautiful creatures of the wild.

The only way to enter the Sanctuary is with a safari permit, which may be booked online in advance. Moreover, the (GIZ) Gir Interpretation Zone’s Devalia Park is a stop where you’ve another famous jeep safari that you can take while at Sasan Gir. The forest department also organizes an hour-long safari to enlighten people about nature and its importance.

Types of Gir National Park Safaris

The central area of Gir National Park is 258 square kilometers in size. A jeep is one of the fantastic ways to explore the central area of the Gir National Park safari. However, different kinds of safaris, including bus safaris and the Devalia safari, are also conducted in the protected area of Gir National Park or Devalia Park. This national park’s core area buffer zone and protected area are distinct. People should, therefore, identify which Gir National Forest safari they desire before choosing a tour. Below are the details of Gir National Park’s safari:

Jeep Safari

The park offers three vehicle excursions each day along the Gir Jungle Trail. During this 3-hour Jeep safari, visitors can view lions in their natural habitat in addition to numerous species and colorful birds. Due to its size restriction, 30 automobiles can enter the park simultaneously.

These automobiles are all locally owned and operated and belong to the Forest Department. Visitors are strongly encouraged to book their Jeep safaris well in advance. Only specific kinds of gasoline-powered personal automobiles are allowed in the park. A driver and a guide are still required. The safari routes, developed within the Sanctuary’s tourist area, are an average of 35 km long each. When you arrive at the reception center, Sinh Sadan, Sasan Gir, a specific route is chosen randomly, together with a driver and guide.

An additional stop on a safari through Gir National Forest is Kamleshwar Dam, where visitors can climb the watchtower for stunning views of the park, the lake, and the tribal communities. The dam is home to a significant population of marsh crocodiles.

Why opt for a Jeep Safari?

  • Spend a whole day at Gujarat’s Gir National Park, surrounded by the majestic greenery that has been beautifully preserved.
  • Take pictures of the massive group of Asiatic lions you may witness at the park.
  • You are accompanied by a knowledgeable driver and a licensed tour guide to provide the finest direction.
  • Witness many unique species of wild animals, including endangered species, in their distinctive habitats to feel incredibly relaxed.

Devalia Gypsy Safari

An interpretation zone has been created at Devalia to lessen human interference in Gir National Park’s central region and help visitors comprehend Gir’s significance and diverse species.

The primary purpose of building this facility is to provide a quick and easy way to watch lions and other animal species in their natural habitat while easing pressure on the main sanctuary area. Sambars, Chinkaras, Wild Boars, Blue Bulls, and Spotted Deer comprise a sizable portion of the prey base in this interpretive zone.

Devaliya Gypsy Safari is a one-hour safari ride in a personally covered Gypsy organized by the forest department within the Devaliya Safari Park (also known as Gir Interpretation Zone).

Why opt for a Devalia Gypsy Safari?

  • It accommodates up to six adults and one child.
  • Jeep safari is less disturbing for humans and animals due to its less noisy engine.
  • In gypsy safari, you can comfortably sit and enjoy the views of animals.

Devalia Bus Safari

It takes roughly 45 minutes to tour the Devaliya GIZ via bus. Since these buses have official government authorization, they are exclusively subject to the norms and regulations of the forest department.

All buses are kept in good condition, and the driver and other staff members are authorized. You can see lions, deer, jackals, foxes, and many other animals in the next 45 minutes.

Most wild animals may be viewed in the open, in their natural environment. Devaliya’s bus safari offers a unique opportunity to discover the natural beauty and wildlife. To reserve a bus safari in Devalya, travelers must do so online in advance.

Why opt for a Devalia Bus safari?

  • Traveling at a canter is recommended if more than six individuals are at your party. Unfortunately, you won’t get a Jeep if you miss the canter. Therefore, it would be wise for you to canter as a group.
  • When a lion is sighted, the height of a canter can be helpful. Sometimes, you can see farther into the bush from the bus than the Jeep.
  • A bus safari is the safest mode of travel in the jungle because it offers more security in the wilderness.

So, which type of safari would you pick?

The ride of a 45-minute bus or jeep tour is appealing. However, many visitors wonder whether a bus or jeep safari is preferable. Please choose the option that best suits your needs because it depends on your preferences and choices. But if you want to avoid last-minute hassles and problems, advance online safari booking to Gir National Park is possible and advantageous.

Safari Booking Process

So, have you decided to book a Gir National Park safari? Don’t worry. The Tourism of India has all the details to help you make the proper reservations. For you, it’s only a matter of deciding which option you are most comfortable with by keeping you away from a hectic booking process and letting you focus all your attention on enjoying the wildlife tour to Sasan. Be ready to make some fantastic memories to cherish forever!

Required Documents to Book Gir Jungle Safari

  • You need a valid ID to buy an entrance ticket.
  • Foreign visitors must have a valid passport to purchase an entrance ticket.
  • Include your full name, age, gender, and country of citizenship when booking a safari.

Things to keep in mind before visiting Gir National Park

  • It’s advisable to reserve a hotel in advance so they can assist you in booking your tickets. You can choose a hotel and purchase your tickets online.
  • Tickets for the parks are limited. For a safari, preparation is required. Although it wasn’t always the case, the price of a Gir safari is now the same for foreigners and Indians.
  • The park is closed in July, August, and September—the monsoon season. However, in the Summer months, from May to June, because it’s hot and the tigers are looking for water, it’s more likely to spot them then. But be aware that it’s also scorching hot for the tourists on the safari.

What We Do?

Sasan Gir National Park was a part of the princely state of Junagarh back in the 19th century and a hunting ground for the royal household and the British officers. However, the sudden drop in the lion population encouraged the Nawab of Junagarh to establish the sanctuary in 1965. Today, Gir Forest is the only place in Asia where Asiatic lions can roam freely. Ecotourism is a major attraction and a source of revenue to keep the place up and running.

Forest & Safari Booking

The landscape.

The Gir Lion Reserve, aka Sasan Gir, is part of a huge stretch of Kathiawr-Gir deciduous forest and home to the majestic Asiatic lions. The park, spreading over an area of 1413 square Kilometres is ideal for a weekend gateway, offering guests great accommodation options near the park. You can spend your days exploring the Gir jungle trail safaris, spotting lion cubs roaming about the area, and learn more about the amazing wildlife conservation work that is done by the officers here.

Water Resources

Other than the rich biodiversity and tourism, the Sasan Gir forest is also known for its elaborate water conservation systems. Gir is the meeting point of seven major perennial rivers- Hiran, Shetrunji, Datardi, Shingoda, Machhundri, Godavari, and Raval. There are four water reservoirs constructed on four of these rivers Hiran, Machhundri, Raval, and Shingoda. The Kamleshwar Dam, dubbed, ‘the lifeline of Gir’ is the biggest dam in the area. Plus, there are water points or small lakes constructed all over the landscape for animals to gather during the scorching summer months to quench their thirst.

Flora Of Gir Jungle

Gir National Park is a very dry teak forest. Here, teak occurs mixed with dry deciduous species. More than 507 plant species have been recorded comprising 132 tree species, 48 shrub species, 232 herb species, 64 climber species and 26 grass species. The Gir national park is part of the Kathiawar-Gir deciduous forest, replete with semi-evergreen trees and thorny shrubs, and rolling plains of grasslands. The area features mixed forest with teak trees, Zizyphas, dhak, Jamun, tendu, babool, banyan and acacia that can be used for fuelwood and other purposes.

Other than that, there are also plants like Dhavdo, timru, umro, simai, Simal, khakro, Kalam, Vad, Amla, Bamboo, Ber, and Saliacan here. The forest is shady with broad-leaved deciduous trees like casuarinas and Prosopsis that add on to the aesthetics of the place. Scientists and biologists are also conducting research in and around the area, discovering new species, harvesting methods, and actionable environmental conservation techniques.

Fauna Of Gir Forest

The endless stretch of deciduous forest in the Gir National Park is the only place in Asia where you can find Asiatic lions roaming around freely in all their glory. However, the dense forest is not just home to these majestic carnivores but a host of other species and insects that make the place vibrant and diverse.

Established in 1965, this wildlife sanctuary was earlier a hunting ground for royal families and British officers. Today the area is one of the most extensive wildlife conservation sites in the country. Back in 1913, there were but 20 lions in the forest, the 2015 consensus shows a vast improvement in the situation with the population rising to 523 lions. Here are some of the animals that you can come across on your trip to the Sasan Gir Forest:

Other than lions, you can also find herds of deer, leopards, hyenas, jackals, elephants, mongoose, and other mammals on land. There are two types of deer species found here- the popular Sambar and Chowsingha, the four-horned antelope. Striped Hyena, jackals, and India Fox are other common predators.

The Gir National Park is house of over 200 species of birds- ranging from common swallows to majestic peacocks. The national park also functions as a bird reserve, a title that was declared by the Bird Conservative Network. Bird watchers from across the world come over to the forest to spot species like the greenish yellow-footed pigeons, Griffon Eurasian vulture, hawk, eagle, Indian Pitta, Oriole to name a few.

As soon as you enter the forest, the chirruping of crickets greets you, piercing the stillness of the jungle. As you move on, you might come across other small creatures like worms, butterflies, bugs, grasshoppers among other things. There are over 2000 species of insects that were discovered by scientists in the past few decades. We would recommend that you carry a bug spray, carry jackets, and other medication with you to protect yourself from allergic reactions and skin inflammation.

Other than insects and birds, the Gir national reserve has a decent population of reptiles as well. There are roughly 37 new species of reptiles, ranging from frogs to snakes and scorpions and bees that researchers have discovered in the area. However, it is the marsh crocodile that steals the show, attracting tourists in large numbers. Snake lovers would be thrilled to discover species like the King Cobra, Russel’s viper, Krait, and saw-scaled vipers in the forest.

Gir has a tropical monsoon climate, with three distinct seasons – summer, monsoon and winter. Late November to early March is cool and dry, followed by a hot dry summer. Mid-June to September is the monsoon period. The bulk of the precipitation is during July and August.

Devalia safari or gir safari? What should I choose and why?

bus safari in gir

The watered down version of Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary called Devalia is defined as follows on the Gir Online Permit Booking System website

"This Interpretation Zone comprises of 412 ha chain link fenced area which is regarded as ‘Gir in a nutshell’ covering all habitat types and wildlife of Gir. The basic aim of creating this facility is to provide an opportunity of viewing lions and other animals in their natural habitat within a short period of time at cheaper rates." doesn't sound attractive to me.

If the main park is badly managed by uniformed bureaucrats that ask for your passport in the middle of a visit at the center of the park, the idea of a "nutshell" version makes me expect even worse behavior in a smaller area. In other words you get what you pay for.

The Park management does not welcome photographers nor does it make visitors feel welcome.

The only thing the Park management and its staff does welcome is your money.

The Park management does not impose any kind of discipline on visitors (even if they claim to do so).

1) There is no age limit for visitors which means that screaming very young children, who probably would prefer being elsewhere, make themselves heard for miles.

2) Eating any kind of food is normal practice and leaving behind plastic bags that used to contain potato chips is frequent and normal.

3) Stopping for 25 minutes "for rest room" is more a ploy on the part of the drivers and the guides.

Try and find out who will be assigned to you as a guide.

Out of numerous useless individuals simply craving tips there are a few that know what they are doing.

Tipping because you have seen a lion is wrong.

In other parks tipping when you see a tiger makes sense.

Seeing a lion at Gir is no big deal.

You should see at least one lion for every outing.

Now whether that sighting will satisfy you depends on what your expectations are.

Don't be surprised if there are 10 jeeps surrounding the lions and blocking your view.

That too is normal at Gir.

I have made no mystery abut the fact that I did not appreciate my visits to Gir in terms of how the Park gets managed and its total lack of useful discipline.

Harassment in terms asking for passports is not discipline its just a bureaucrat pointing out to you that "he can ask".

Regardless the wildlife (when left in peace by throngs of screaming visitors) is marvelous.

I suggest you hurry because with the kind of management I saw that Park won't have much to offer in the not so distant future.

If its only about lion viewing then Devaliya safari is more than enough, as you will surely comes across atleast 4-5 lion/lioness for sure. However, if you want to experience the ecosystem of Gir and understand the flora and fauna, then Gir Safari is a must. Hence, I would request you to think over as to what is it that you are looking for and accordingly decide on Devaliya/Gir Safari.

Gir: 2.5 hours of jeep ride on well established path that they cannot stray from. 6-7am is best time. Will see pigs, deer, peacocks. Unlikely to see lion, forget about seeing national geographic style lion action. Nice jeep ride in open air even if you don't see animals. Worth the money? One jeep max 6 persons is I believe 2500? If less than 6, try to share with someone. If you don't have advance booking line up at 5am. Only 15 jeeps are sold. If you happen to be 16th bad luck. I see coup camera: over 5 mega pixel still is additional fars . I see couple of replies about bad management etc. Indians are Indians after all. Generally we have no regard for others. So do no not go because of that. On the day of my visit I did not see bad behavior on part of management but would no be surprised if it was.

Devalia: half hour drive in own vehicle or public bus (not Gir's). Same animals plus couple of tigers in fenced area. Tigers seen from about 200 yards. Saw a family of lions. 30 minute non ac large bus ride through the park. You have to be lucky to have the seat on the correct side. Caution: I missed my bus so did a family of 5, bathroom break. Ticketing officer would not adjust it. I had to buy new ticket, other person had to buy 5 more. No warning that your bus is about to leave, of course there is no set schedule.

WOULD I DO EITHER AGAIN IF I KNEW WHAT I KNOW NOW: NO. if you are going to that area for some other reason or you live not too far

bus safari in gir

Devalia is just a sanctuary ( i.e it is just a fenced zone where few animals are kept u can also cl it a kind of a zoo) where as gir jungle trail is a real jungle where u might or might not able to see the lion depending upon there mood and ur luck.

I suggest you to go for gir national park and if u cant see lion for any reason u can go to devaliya park.you can get tickets for devaliya over the counter if its not a festival time.I read many comments about both of above and I have visited both places several times.every one is true in their opinion as they have faced that.tipping and not welcoming people are common things but we should not be bothered about that cos we r going to see the lions not smiley face of this people .I advise you to enjoy ur time to see nature and try to solve if any issues with some bucks.just promise guide and driver that make our day and will make urs.hahahaha.this is what we r facing every where in country so why to spoil our holiday time for few bucks.enjoy the trip

bus safari in gir

I agree with what Milan, Italy has to say. There is no age limit and screaming children and unruly teenagers spoil the fun. Indians are Indians and will never learn good manners nor hygine and they throw trash and plastic packaging and tetrapak juice containers from their jeep. We have collect quite a few on way to clean what ever, our responsible guide could do. Actually all food items and plastic containers should be banned 100%. To avoid such nuisance and if you are really interested in seeing and enjoying the wild I advice you that do not travel on weekends when most of these families travel for weekend getaways. Also visit during summer April & May when these pests will not be there and wild life viewing will be good. Seeing Lions in the wild is better than in the Devalia as it is a fenced area with presence of all wild animals that exists in the Sasan Gir NP. It has been created to show lions 100% for those who have no time or could not get permit to enter the NP. They allow limited number of vehicles but when we were there in Dec due to heavy rush they issued few extra permits also. Take the early morning or the evening safari the 9AM safari is waste of time. If you have time visit the main NP and if you are in a hurry and want to see a lion and other wild life visit Devalia which is more like a zoofary except that the area is little larger. It all depends on your interest as you will see more birds in the NP than at Devalia. You can even do both as visiting Devalia is not as expensive as visiting the NP. If you have young children I would advice you better visit Devalia. The tour inside Devalia is by buss with large windows.

Appreciate your sharing thank you

Devalia national park is open in July or not? We are planning to go for Jungle safari

bus safari in gir

One should look at Devaliya as an "Open Zoo" or "Inverse Zoo"; where animals are allowed to roam freely around in a restricted area under supervision, and people are allowed to watch them from a bus or a jeep.

For the trill of a jungle ride, Gir Jungle Trail is the one to opt for. If you want to see a lion and a hyena and deers and fox and leapord in kind of "Open Enclosure", go for Devaliya.

The time frame for the two says a lot about it... Devaliya takes 45mins max where as Jungle Trail would take atleast 45mins.

Gir. No doubt about it. Enjoy.

Obviously Sasan gir safari, it's a real safari experience. on other side devaliya safari looks like an arrangement of some lions on some predefined spots. in Sasan gir you have to find lions in jungle which is real safari experiance.

Gir. Devalia is a poor imitation.

bus safari in gir

Hi, you must go for Gir Safari because Devalia Safari is just about half hour ride in bus, whereas the Gir Safari is done in open Jeeps. Obviously, for that reason Gir Safari is the 'real' thing, thrilling, we could see a family of 4-5 lions, two cubs at a distance of not more than 30 feet. So go for the Gir safari and that too for the first safari at 6:00 in the morning, because in summers, the lions do not venture out in the open due to heat. They remain under shades of trees. Wishing you happy and memorable time at Gir.

bus safari in gir

i am also of the same opinion, you should prefer gir over devaliya safari.

bus safari in gir

To enjoy a real safari adventure, it has to be GIR SAFARI. You need to have patience to stand long queue very early morning (or early online booking) to get the permit. Spotting lion or leopard has also element of chance. Besides, its cost is also more. Devalia is a a "zoo" in its basic sense, where the animals roam around in a fenced large size open park. Spotting animals is almost certain.

bus safari in gir

My suggestion will be Gir Safari. But it also depends upon the time you have in hand. Devaliya Safari takes less time, to see Lions. However, in Gir Safari, you will see more lions, and other wild life animals, like bear, fox, zebra etc. if you are lucky.

bus safari in gir

Nidhi. Answer this traveller's question here.

If you Dont have time and want to see Lions for sure, then you should visit Devalia.

In case you are spending two days there, then definitely visit Gir Forest to be able to enjoy the forest. Next day you can visit Devalia if you miss lion in the forest.

Devalia is smaller zone. We did not stay in Gir and had limited time. Since we did not want to miss lions so that kids could enjoy, so we visited Devalia

bus safari in gir

Gir Safari obviously............but do advance online booking from girlion.in

Devalia is a kind of zoo, where you can see lions and other animals............

bus safari in gir

In Devalia Safari there are quite a good chance to see Lions/ Leopards being Devalia is smaller in area. You can take booking of around 3.30pm for Devalia Safari

Gir National park Safari is also to be taken so that you can see Lions in open jeep in very natural atmosphere, also Jungle ride of around 2 hours is very pleasent. Take booking for 6.30am for Gir National Park Safari.

bus safari in gir

Devaliya safari is a small area which is cordon with few lions so that tourists which don't have time for gir safari can experience and see lions. The original jungle safari is gir safari. The only problem is tickets do on-line booking.

bus safari in gir

Gir is absolutely a must since you will see Lions & Lionesses 7 cubs in natural habitat. Devalia is like an open Zoo where the Lazy lions are fed on food & they lie in difinate spots. Sure to Lions in Devalia.

bus safari in gir

Choose Gir Safari

bus safari in gir

Only Gir is some thing you shd go, best is book at least 3 safari in gir at three different zones to make best out there the big cat lion.

bus safari in gir

If you just want to see lions then Devaliya safari is enough but if you want to enjoy lion as well as Glorious ecosystem of sasan gir forest you must go with sasan gir jeep safari.

bus safari in gir

What timing should you choose for visiting Gir Safari - 6 to 9 am or 8:30 - 11:30 am or evening 3-6 pm. Note I am going in November when day light starts at around 6:30. Please advise.

Devalia Jeep Or Bus Safari: Which One Should I Choose?

Published by abhishek on february 16, 2022 february 16, 2022.

The Gir Interpretation Zone, now better known as Devalia, is located west of Sasan Gir village within the Gir National Park regions, west of Sasan Gir village. If you visit there, you will almost certainly see lions. Aside from the lions, you’ll adore the cute foxes, mongooses, leopards, and deer.

Devalia Jeep vs. Devalia Bus: Which Safari Ride is better?

The availability of a 45-minute bus or jeep tour is actually rather appealing. Many tourists wonder if a bus safari or a jeep safari is preferable for them. This guide will tell you which one is better and more appropriate for your visit to Devalia based on my experience.

Jeep Safari Ride In Devalia Park

Open jeep safari is available with a solid cage category constructed for security reasons and a well-instructed guide to familiarize you with the lion and leopard surroundings.

Morning and evening times are available. Only a one-hour Gir safari booking and another 30 minutes for pick-up and drop-off. It can sleep up to 6 adults and 1 child.

The Devalia Gypsy Safari ride cannot be booked on the spot. Only advance reservations are accepted.

bus safari in gir

Because of its quieter engine, the Jeep safari is not only less bothersome for humans but also for animals.

Jeep safaris are ideal for seeing wildlife up close and personal, as well as capturing the scenery.

Bus Safari Ride In Devalia Park

The bus safari is a massive vehicle that slams along and isn’t particularly comfy, so it rattles and produces a lot of noise.

The bus safari in Devalia runs from 7:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. in the morning, and in the afternoon from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. It can hold over 20 people at once.

On the spot, booking of Devalia Bus Safari ride is not available. Only advance reservations are accepted. The bus safari’s engine is really loud.

Because of the bus’s height, you won’t be able to get a better angle when photographing your favorite animals.

Which option suits you depends on your choice and preferences, so, choose the one that fits your needs. But one should be clear that advance online safari booking in gir national park is available and is beneficial if you don’t want last minute hassles and problems. For getting tickets from Devalia safari park booking in advance, you should visit our website online and get more information regarding the park and nearby places.

Suspect in Audrii Cunningham’s death is charged with capital murder after the girl’s body was found in a river tied to a rock

Don Steven McDougal, the family friend accused of killing 11-year-old Audrii Cunningham in Livingston, Texas, is now charged with capital murder, according to court documents filed in Polk County on Wednesday.

McDougal – who was already in jail in connection with an unrelated assault case – was ordered to be held without bond.

“Video footage and cell phone data places McDougal at three locations of interest,” including along the Trinity River, where Audrii’s body was recovered Tuesday, according to a criminal complaint.

Investigators say McDougal had agreed to take the girl to a school bus stop on the morning that she disappeared, but she never arrived. In the complaint, a sheriff’s deputy said there is evidence “McDougal lied about his whereabouts and activities on the day of February 15, 2024.”

A large rock was found tied around Audrii’s body when her remains were discovered, the court document says. “The rope used was consistent with rope that was observed in McDougal’s vehicle on a traffic stop two days prior,” the complaint states.

Neither the court documents filed Wednesday nor jail records list an attorney for McDougal.

Audrii’s family thought McDougal was just taking the girl down the street to the bus stop when the pair left her home Thursday morning, Polk County officials said. But she never made it onto the school bus or into her classroom, and a bag resembling her bright red, Hello Kitty backpack was later found near a local dam.

Audrii’s body was found Tuesday in the Trinity River, downstream from the reservoir near where the backpack was found. It was one of several locations McDougal told investigators he had gone around the time of her disappearance, Sheriff Byron Lyons said.

Investigators located Audrii’s remains using cell phone records, video analysis and information from McDougal, Lyons said.

The condition of Audrii’s remains is not being released, the sheriff said, and the Harris County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine her cause of death.

To help uncover the body, Lyons said, water management authorities slowed the flow of water from the Lake Livingston reservoir – one of the largest reservoirs in the state , with 83,000 surface acres – allowing the river level to recede enough to reveal the remains.

“I express my deepest sympathies and condolences to everyone who knew, who cared for and loved Audrii,” the sheriff said. “We will continue to process the evidence that has been gathered to ensure justice for Audrii.”

McDougal, a friend of Audrii’s father, lived in a trailer on the family’s property and sometimes took the girl to catch her school bus in the neighborhood, the sheriff said. He has been the main person of interest in her disappearance as authorities frantically scoured the rural east Texas town of Livingston – about 70 miles northeast of Houston, he said.

McDougal joined the search efforts and was seen knocking on neighborhood doors and asking if anyone had seen Audrii, the sheriff told CNN. But Lyons didn’t believe his efforts were genuine.

“To me, it simply tells me is that he’s trying to give the appearances that he has no play or he’s not at fault in her disappearance and that (he’s) part of the concerned parties who were trying to locate her,” Lyons said Tuesday.

In the days after Audrii vanished, McDougal claimed in several social media comments that he was not guilty of her disappearance and had “done nothing wrong,” according to activity on a Facebook account appearing to belong to the suspect.

“I’m not guilty,” reads a comment from the account under a post on the Facebook page “True Crime Society” the day after Audrii was reported missing.

“I was there and was questioned. I am not running or hiding,” McDougal wrote before commenting again and saying, “I have done everything I can to help find her. I have done nothing wrong.”

CNN has sought comment from investigators about the Facebook comments.

Suspect has lengthy criminal history

McDougal has a lengthy criminal history dating back to at least 2003, with convictions for violent crimes and one for enticing a child, according to court records in several Texas counties.

In 2007, he was convicted of enticing a child in Brazoria County, Texas. Court records show he pleaded no contest and was sentenced to two years in prison but was given credit for 527 days.

Online records do not detail the specific allegations in the child enticement case. But the offense is defined by the state as “the intent to interfere with the lawful custody of a child younger than 18 years” when a person “entices, persuades, or takes the child from the custody of the parent or guardian.”

McDougal was also convicted in 2010 and 2019 for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

The victim in the first aggravated assault case said McDougal, his former coworker, attacked him after being thrown out of his house.

“He showed up with some other friends that I had,” Elic Bryan told CNN on Tuesday.

McDougal started stabbing the door before coming back inside, Bryan said.

“He came at me with the knife, and I had my shotgun, and I hit him in the face with it,” Bryan said. “I had no idea he was that kind of person.”

That aggravated assault case led to a four-year prison sentence.

‘You are broken, you are mad, you are empty’

Audrii’s loved ones are now grappling with not just the agony of her death, but also the criminal investigation of a suspect once considered a family friend.

The fifth-grader’s classmates and teachers are also grieving, the Livingston Independent School District said in a statement on Facebook.

“While the details of this tragedy are still unfolding, our hearts go out to the entire community during this heartbreaking loss,” superintendent Brent Hawkins said.

During the dayslong search for Audrii, her mother said she understood the anguish of parents of missing children, whom she had only heard about on the news.

“There’s not words for it. There is not one feeling you feel. It’s a roller coaster. You are broken, you are mad, you are empty. And right now, I am empty,” Matthews told CNN affiliate KPRC on Friday.

“She has so many opportunities ahead of her, and she deserves every right to be able to reach those opportunities.”

CNN’s Caroll Alvarado, Amy Simonson, Amanda Jackson and Jillian Sykes contributed to this report.

Why were so many metro stations in Moscow renamed?

Okhotny Ryad station in Soviet times and today.

Okhotny Ryad station in Soviet times and today.

The Moscow metro system has 275 stations, and 28 of them have been renamed at some point or other—and several times in some cases. Most of these are the oldest stations, which opened in 1935.

The politics of place names

The first station to change its name was Ulitsa Kominterna (Comintern Street). The Comintern was an international communist organization that ceased to exist in 1943, and after the war Moscow authorities decided to call the street named after it something else. In 1946, the station was renamed Kalininskaya. Then for several days in 1990, the station was called Vozdvizhenka, before eventually settling on Aleksandrovsky Sad, which is what it is called today.

The banner on the entraince reads:

The banner on the entraince reads: "Kalininskaya station." Now it's Alexandrovsky Sad.

Until 1957, Kropotkinskaya station was called Dvorets Sovetov ( Palace of Soviets ). There were plans to build a monumental Stalinist high-rise on the site of the nearby Cathedral of Christ the Saviour , which had been demolished. However, the project never got off the ground, and after Stalin's death the station was named after Kropotkinskaya Street, which passes above it.

Of course, politics was the main reason for changing station names. Initially, the Moscow Metro itself was named after Lazar Kaganovich, Joseph Stalin’s right-hand man. Kaganovich supervised the construction of the first metro line and was in charge of drawing up a master plan for reconstructing Moscow as the "capital of the proletariat."

In 1955, under Nikita Khrushchev's rule and during the denunciation of Stalin's personality cult, the Moscow Metro was named in honor of Vladimir Lenin.

New Metro stations that have been opened since the collapse of the Soviet Union simply say "Moscow Metro," although the metro's affiliation with Vladimir Lenin has never officially been dropped.

Zyablikovo station. On the entrance, there are no more signs that the metro is named after Lenin.

Stations that bore the names of Stalin's associates were also renamed under Khrushchev. Additionally, some stations were named after a neighborhood or street and if these underwent name changes, the stations themselves had to be renamed as well.

Until 1961 the Moscow Metro had a Stalinskaya station that was adorned by a five-meter statue of the supreme leader. It is now called Semyonovskaya station.

Left: Stalinskaya station. Right: Now it's Semyonovskaya.

Left: Stalinskaya station. Right: Now it's Semyonovskaya.

The biggest wholesale renaming of stations took place in 1990, when Moscow’s government decided to get rid of Soviet names. Overnight, 11 metro stations named after revolutionaries were given new names. Shcherbakovskaya became Alekseyevskaya, Gorkovskaya became Tverskaya, Ploshchad Nogina became Kitay-Gorod and Kirovskaya turned into Chistye Prudy. This seriously confused passengers, to put it mildly, and some older Muscovites still call Lubyanka station Dzerzhinskaya for old times' sake.

At the same time, certain stations have held onto their Soviet names. Marksistskaya and Kropotkinskaya, for instance, although there were plans to rename them too at one point.

"I still sometimes mix up Teatralnaya and Tverskaya stations,” one Moscow resident recalls .

“Both have been renamed and both start with a ‘T.’ Vykhino still grates on the ear and, when in 1991 on the last day of my final year at school, we went to Kitay-Gorod to go on the river cruise boats, my classmates couldn’t believe that a station with that name existed."

The city government submitted a station name change for public discussion for the first time in 2015. The station in question was Voykovskaya, whose name derives from the revolutionary figure Pyotr Voykov. In the end, city residents voted against the name change, evidently not out of any affection for Voykov personally, but mainly because that was the name they were used to.

What stations changed their name most frequently?

Some stations have changed names three times. Apart from the above-mentioned Aleksandrovsky Sad (Ulitsa Kominterna->Kalininskaya->Vozdvizhenka->Aleksandrovsky Sad), a similar fate befell Partizanskaya station in the east of Moscow. Opened in 1944, it initially bore the ridiculously long name Izmaylovsky PKiO im. Stalina (Izmaylovsky Park of Culture and Rest Named After Stalin). In 1947, the station was renamed and simplified for convenience to Izmaylovskaya. Then in 1963 it was renamed yet again—this time to Izmaylovsky Park, having "donated" its previous name to the next station on the line. And in 2005 it was rechristened Partizanskaya to mark the 60th anniversary of victory in World War II.

Partizanskaya metro station, nowadays.

Another interesting story involves Alekseyevskaya metro station. This name was originally proposed for the station, which opened in 1958, since a village with this name had been located here. It was then decided to call the station Shcherbakovskaya in honor of Aleksandr Shcherbakov, a politician who had been an associate of Stalin. Nikita Khrushchev had strained relations with Shcherbakov, however, and when he got word of it literally a few days before the station opening the builders had to hastily change all the signs. It ended up with the concise and politically correct name of Mir (Peace).

The name Shcherbakovskaya was restored in 1966 after Khrushchev's fall from power. It then became Alekseyevskaya in 1990.

But the station that holds the record for the most name changes is Okhotny Ryad, which opened in 1935 on the site of a cluster of market shops. When the metro system was renamed in honor of Lenin in 1955, this station was renamed after Kaganovich by way of compensation. The name lasted just two years though because in 1957 Kaganovich fell out of favor with Khrushchev, and the previous name was returned. But in 1961 it was rechristened yet again, this time in honor of Prospekt Marksa, which had just been built nearby.

In 1990, two historical street names—Teatralny Proyezd and Mokhovaya Street—were revived to replace Prospekt Marksa, and the station once again became Okhotny Ryad.
