Summer House Season-Finale Recap: ’Til Death Do Us Party

Portrait of Brian Moylan

Summer House

summer house season 5 house tour

If there were an MVP award for this season, it would definitely have to go to the cleaning crew who steamed Ciara’s never-vacuumed bedroom carpet and had to clean out a toilet bowl full of unflushed turds. No, just kidding. The actual MVP would be Danielle.

That is not a joke, either. She earned the title that drunken night when Lindsay freaked out on Stephen and he threatened to leave. Danielle took his suitcase and put it in her room to keep him in the house. But she really earned it the next morning. Before Lindsay had to talk to Stephen about their problems and why he’s always leaving her, Lindsay asked her, “Am I the problem in this relationship?” Without even thinking, Danielle said, “Yes,” and unblinkingly stared down the bottomless chasm of Lindsay’s need and told her what everyone else was afraid to.

There are a lot of great people in this house, people who bring their hot bodies, people who bring the drama, people who bring a limitless supply of sparkling hard iced-tea flavored beverages even though there is a shortage of them worldwide. Danielle might not be any of those people (though she is gorgeous and can serve body), but Danielle brings us the truth. Danielle brings us back to reality, and without her, this whole enterprise would be vibrating on a frequency too high for any of us to tolerate, like when a dog can’t stand the whir of the refrigerator. She also sucked up the spilled espresso martini off the beer-pong court, so, there’s that.

Danielle’s main job, of course, is deactivating Lindsay, and this episode she was as activated as a new credit card when there’s a sale at Nordstrom Rack. After a day at the beach (featured last episode ), everyone is drinking and suffering from a severe affliction of Elephantiasis of the Jenga. Lindsay gets PR-girl wasted (which is like white-girl wasted, but meaner) and decides to go downstairs and barrage Stephen with texts about how he needs to come down and hang out with her. Then, when he doesn’t respond, she texts about him ignoring her. The dude is busy bonding with the bros. He’s not even looking at his phone! Eventually, her neglect means she needs to go upstairs and tell him, “If you don’t care about your fucking girl, you can leave right now.”

Stephen takes the bait but stops short of actually leaving the house. (I know. I know. The season is over. I can’t possibly make any more short jokes.) In the morning, Lindsay says that she has abandonment issues and that he can’t keep threatening to leave her, because that is the worst thing he could possibly do. Stephen agrees, but he doesn’t say that if she wants that then she needs to stop drunkenly freaking out on him and screaming about problems of her own creation. We must never forget that Lindsay was abandoned by her mother, so what she does in every relationship is impress her needs upon her partner to such an extent that she drives them away. She’s waiting for the person who will say, “No matter what you do, I’m not leaving like your mother did.”

Stephen, meanwhile, is someone who runs whenever there is trouble or confrontation. We don’t know enough about him, his upbringing, or his psychology to know anything more than that he loves Say Anything and finger-blasting. But that their two sets of neuroses are contradictory rather than complementary does not bode well for the both of them and, honestly, they should break up. Well, lucky for us, they have, so we will never have to navigate these treacherous waters of Stephen and Lindsay again. However, summer will come again, and Lindsay will have a new mate and she’ll be up to her same shenanigans, I’m sure. I will once again crack them open like a Freudian case study, because Lindsay’s pathology is fascinating and I would like to continue slurping it up like it’s a 99-cent ramen packet that never ends.

Now, on to more stable relationships, like Paige and Perry’s. Oh, just kidding. They broke up too. The whole Paige and Perry rupture was a little bit like a shart: out of nowhere, seemingly messy, but dispatched with a surprising swiftness. As quick as a drag queen can peel off a pair of fake lashes, Paige decides she doesn’t want to be in a relationship anymore and breaks up with him, though she didn’t announce it to the world until that fall. According to the internet, they’re still broken up, but the internet also says that the world is flat and Joe Rogan is awesome, so I wouldn’t go believing the internet anytime soon.

It is a little bit shocking that there are only two relationships in the house that are stable: Kyle and Amanda and Luke’s Beavis-like devotion to fire. ( Fire! Hehe fire! ) While the second of those relationships was celebrated every week, the practice wedding between Kyle and Amanda is something new. I must say, the thing I love most about this crew is their unceasing dedication to a theme — they literally spent the entire day setting up an altar and a reception for a pretend wedding for only ten people. This thing was professional. I wish they had gotten a justice of the peace out there and actually gotten married on TV and then just had a wedding-themed party the next year. I mean, they’re planning to do it in Jersey City; it might as well not even happen.

This celebration might not have even happened without Stephen. How would they have gotten so many tiny LED candles to light the front steps if it weren’t for him and his display of devotion for Lindsay? At least these Amazon addicts upcycled something this season.

Seriously, though, the ceremony was really sweet and brought a little tear to my eye, if only because we saw how much Kyle and Amanda love each other and how much Kyle and Carl love each other. It just buoys my wizened gay heart that there is so much genuine love in this little Biosphere 2 for drunks. When Kyle asks Carl to be his co-best man, that also made me tear up, less so than when Amanda and Paige openly bawl about how much they love each other when she asks Paige to be a bridesmaid. Is that the patriarchy speaking or is it my horniness for Kyle and Carl to make out? (When Kyle had to kiss a member of the same sex during Sexy Jenga and didn’t make out with Carl, I was so devastated that I needed to take an extra Lexapro.)

The only person not sharing in all the love is Hannah, who sits around all day looking like a stale gummy bear that got run over by a bike tire. First of all, she does nothing to get ready for the fake wedding (which, fine, but also Robert, who is not even in the house, did like 18 chores). Then she calls Des and complains about how everyone was mean to her and against her when she was the one who instigated all the fights. Finally, she tries to not be mad when Amanda asks Paige to be a bridesmaid but not her.

Here’s the thing that Hannah doesn’t seem to understand: Either she can suck it up about Kyle and continue to be friends with Amanda, or she needs to pull away from both of them. She says in her confessional that she chose to speak up about Kyle this summer and this is what she got. Paige kept quiet about him and this is her reward. She says this like talking shit about one of your best friend’s fiancés is some sort of moral high ground. We all have friends with partners we hate, but we tolerate them because we love our friends more. But not Hannah. No, she thinks that being open and authentic about her hatred makes her a better person and it makes Amanda shitty for then not wanting to associate with her.

When Hannah said that she didn’t want to be invited to the wedding, I knew it was over. Not just her friendship with Amanda, but maybe Summer House as a whole. What was always great about this show, as opposed to Real Housewives , is that these guys actually all seem to like each other and hang out during the off-season. It was like a little view on an actual group of friends. Even though there was drama, they’d get over it and still party together. That seems like it’s come to an end with Hannah going rogue this season. (I loved when she acknowledged that this season she has not been good at controlling her anger.) With the little preview we got of the reunion, it looks just like shouting and recriminations and Hannah spoiling everything, and I don’t want her back in the house if it’s just going to be shouting and stupidity and people who can’t stand each other forced into the same space. I get enough of that on Housewives .

Let’s go back to Danielle for a minute, shall we. She’s the only real person on this show, after all, and she brought along Robert, a home-brew kit that your father got you for Christmas. He is also normal and nice and seems to fit in perfectly. As the rest of the crew rages on, dancing under the lasers in the fog of a smoke machine, they sit on a little tuffet with the fire raging nearby and glower into each other’s eyes. Danielle tells him that she really enjoys his company and wants to keep what they have going. He tells her that he likes it too and wants her to be his girlfriend. The smoke lifts through the humid air and Danielle smiles the kind of smile usually reserved for blowing out birthday candles or finding out that the new Melissa McCarthy movie wasn’t directed by her husband. The two of them kiss as the crickets roar and the fireflies blink and the clouds roll over the moon in a way that makes both of them more beautiful. They don’t want to pull away, they don’t want this kiss to end, they don’t want this party to end, they don’t want this season of bliss and captivity to end. But eventually it must. All kisses eventually part, all fireflies die, all leaves turn ruddy and fall to the ground. Summer, like Stephen, is always a little too short.

West Wilson’s Secret to Thriving on ‘Summer House’? Not Being a ‘Monster Asshole’

By Krystie Lee Yandoli

Krystie Lee Yandoli

Since its 2017 premiere, Summer House has had a tight core cast: Lindsay Hubbard, Carl Radke, Kyle Cooke, Amanda Batula, and Danielle Olivera. From time to time, production brings in new faces to see how they click with the OGs, but it’s rare for newbies to make an impact. Paige DeSorbo and Ciara Miller cracked the group. And with Season Eight, West Wilson has joined their ranks — a near-instant hit with the cast and fans alike.

A Missouri native, West, 29, is sweet and lovably goofy — the kind of guy who cooks everyone dinner on his first night in the house, or falls asleep next to Cooke and accidentally cuddles with him in the middle of the night.

His bromance with fellow Summer House rookie Jesse Solomon and love connection with Miller have consumed most of his story lines, but West has had vulnerable moments onscreen too, opening up about his unemployment journey and sharing heartwarming relationship advice from his great aunt. In a world known for fame-thirsty egomaniacs, hotheads, and cheaters, he’s an oasis of affable Midwestern energy.

In keeping with his aw-shucks charm, West deflects when asked why he thinks he’s so beloved among Bravo ‘s male stars: “I hope it’s because of me,” he says. “The answer could also be [that] it’s a low bar.”

Editor’s picks

The 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history, every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term.

Once you knew you were joining the show, did you go back and watch any old episodes? I watched Season Seven. I’ve done media and production for a while so I put on my detective cap and wanted to see how this is cut, all the cameras, and just kind of investigate a little bit. But I also didn’t want to watch a zillion seasons and start having preconceived notions and opinions. I’m happy that I kind of went into the house blind because I think inevitably, if you were to watch any show, by nature you’re going to form opinions. I would much rather meet people at face value and go from there.

How did you adjust to having cameras around all summer? A stranger holding a camera in your face is going to be weird for anyone, but by the second weekend I felt pretty much like family with the cast and crew. The best thing ever is when you make a joke and one of the camera guys starts laughing and they’re trying to hide their face so the audio doesn’t pick up, that’s when you know a joke was awesome. You adjust to it faster than you think, to be honest. You have to or else you’re going to be afraid.

Andy Cohen Demands Apology Over 'Categorically False' Cocaine Allegations from Real Housewife

Ashley tisdale says her 'mean girls' audition ad-lib made it into the original movie, 'vanderpump rules' star raquel leviss sues tom sandoval, ariana madix over nsfw video in 'scandoval' saga.

You’ve really been embraced by the Bravo community as a favorite — people love the energy you’ve brought to Summer House . Why do you think viewers are connecting with you so much Maybe the dudes before me were awful. I have no idea. I made a promise even before we started filming that I was not going to sell out for TV and I didn’t want to do it if I felt I would be pigeonholed into whatever narrative that a white guy from Missouri could be pigeonholed into. I’ve always made an effort to stay who I am and just be authentic. I think it was just the right balance of being extroverted and trying to make friends but also not trying too hard to prove anything, even though I was new. I’m just happy that sticking to who I was is being embraced.

People are also loving your friendship with Jesse. Why do you think you guys connected so much over the summer? I think anytime you go through an odd or unique experience with anyone it bonds you. For both he and I, this was our first time doing something like this. That whole being thrown into the fire aspect brings you closer to people. We’re also close in age and we kind of operate similarly outside of the house. We both go out together in the city and have the same sense of humor. It just worked out perfectly. Kyle and Carl can go through their late-30s, early-40s trajectory together and then Jesse and I could go through our goggles-in-the-pool-type moments and just let those two friendships exist together.

What was it like to film Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen?  When we film Summer House , things move slow. But Andy’s in there cranking stuff out by the day. So I got in, got dressed, got mic’d, met him, and it was rapid fire. I blinked and I felt like it was over. He’s a Missouri guy so I knew I’d like him and I think he knew we’d get along, too. It was great. I walked out on stage and picked him up. He was easy on me, too. He kind of grilled Kyle and was easy on me.

Your dynamic with Ciara has been a big storyline this season. Why were you drawn to spending time with Ciara last summer on and off camera? She was the first person to make a welcoming gesture to me when I got there. I know in the first episode it probably [only] takes up a couple minutes of time, but marinating meat and cooking meat, making quesadillas, and setting the table takes a long time and she stood there with me throughout the whole thing. Not only was that a welcoming gesture from her, but in that time I also got to know her and unpack who she was. She’s from Georgia and I’m from Missouri, and we bonded over our non-Northeast upbringings and little Southern quirks. From the first night I just felt like we were already on a higher level of a relationship than I had with anyone else. And obviously, she’s a gorgeous human being, so that helps.

On Thursday night’s episode, you talk about how you don’t know where things stand between you and Ciara. You mentioned that you’re younger than other men she’s dated, and at the time that was filmed, you were unemployed. What was it like to pursue someone romantically on camera? With confessionals and with continuous conversations, it’s almost like therapy in a way, where you have to think about everything and verbalize how you feel. By nature, I am not someone who does that, so, in a way, you’re being more vulnerable than you would normally. It’s probably healthy until it isn’t. It makes you think and reflect a lot more. That’s the good side of it, but you also overthink everything you could do and say, because you just never know.

What’s going on with your dating life these days? A lot of it, obviously, we’ll see on the show and at the reunion. This is a very new process for me. Objectively, I wouldn’t say reality TV breeds perfect relationships, and so figuring out how to navigate this whole journey is an ongoing process.

You’re working for Complex now, but when the show filmed last summer, you talked about getting laid off and your unemployment journey. How did it feel to open up about that on camera? I was on such a high with the Bleacher Report job. That was all anyone wanted to talk to me about at family dinners and going out to bars. It was a sick job, and I thought I was kind of untouchable. You self-identify with your job a lot, because that’s all people fucking talk to you about. Then that moment happens where you lose your job and obviously financially, that’s what we care about the most, but for me the most humbling part was socially having to unpack that story. It’s embarrassing to get laid off. Even though it shouldn’t be personal, it feels personal. Looking for jobs is humbling, the whole process is humbling. You just get kicked in the nuts left and right. I learned a lot from it. It was a gross experience but it made me tougher.

What are you thinking about as you’re getting ready to film the reunion? Well, one: My outfit. I feel like the outfits are a big deal. Then I think 90 percent of the drama is inevitably going to be Lindsay and Carl stuff. At this point in time, I haven’t seen the rest of the season but I would imagine that’s going to be a lot. I feel like the girls also have so much history that in the six months in between filming and the reunion, they’re going to find stuff to be mad at each other for. If they wanted to keep it fun, they could just keep the camera on Jesse and [me] and we’ll make jokes. I would prefer it to be rehashing fun giggles and silly times, but we’ll see.

Billie Eilish Would Like to Reintroduce Herself

Team trump is ready to lose the supreme court immunity case. they’re celebrating, taylor swift and jack antonoff have reached their limit, meet the girthmaster, the onlyfans creator who makes up to $80,000 per month.

Would you film another season of Summer House ? Oh my god, yeah. It’s what I would be doing anyway. It’s so parallel to what my summer weekends already look like, so it’s fun to do it with funny dudes and hot girls.

Winter House wasn’t renewed this year but if Bravo brings it back, would you be willing to join that cast? I would. I would lobby for a Bozeman, Montana, winter house and let me be the guide for all the bars and restaurants.

Summer House Season 5 premiere date and trailer released–Here’s everything we know

Bravo releases premiere date and trailer for season 5 of Summer House

Bravo has announced that Season 5 of Summer House is set to air on February 4th. The new season is being described as “unlike anything you’ve seen before.”

The new season was filmed during the COVID-19 pandemic and shows the cast quarantined together over the summer.

The cast is comprised of old favorites including Kyle Cooke, Amanda Batula, Carl Radke, Lindsay Hubbard, Hannah Berner, Paige DeSorbo, Luke Gulbranson, and Danielle Olivera.

This season brought a new addition to the Summer House crew as Ciara Miller, an ICU nurse in New York City, was invited by Luke to join the group.

The caption of the Season 5 trailer reads, “Ten friends. Six weeks. One “quaranteam”. You’ve never seen the Summer House like this before.”

So what kinds of craziness can we expect?

Trailer sneak peeks

The Season 5 trailer shows no shortage of drama as things start to heat up romantically between castmates while other couples hit a rough patch.

During Season 4, Hannah and Luke were a hot item in the house as the on-again-off-again couple flirted and hooked up for the majority of the summer. At the reunion, the couple admitted they had a hard time making things work as Luke spent the bulk of his time in his home state of Minnesota once the coronavirus hit, and Hannah stayed in New York.

It looks like Luke has moved on to a new woman in Season 5 as the trailer shows newcomer Ciara Miller with her eyes set on Luke. The situation appears to bother Hannah as she’s seen crying to Luke and says, “We dated for seven months, and you f***ing rub her in my face to make me feel bad.”

The preview also hinted at some trouble in paradise for Paige and her boyfriend, Perry. Paige appears to be flirtatious with Carl , who she made out with two summers before and she says, “If I met this Carl two summers ago, it would’ve been a totally different story.”

Paige and Perry don’t appear to be the only couple in trouble as Lindsay and her boyfriend, Stephen Traversie also appear to hit a rough patch. The trailer shows Lindsay talking about getting engaged and having kids, but then quickly shows Stephen, seemingly upset, and saying he’s going to just leave the house.

Following the apparent argument, Lindsay goes into Luke’s room and it seems like they hook-up.

A wedding and a brawl

Aside from all of the love triangles of the Summer House cast, Kyle and Amanda appear to be going strong since their engagement . The couple planned to get married this past September, however, they had to cancel due to the pandemic.

In the trailer, Kyle propositions Amanda to elope. Their roommates put together a little backyard wedding for the couple and Carl officiates.

It’s unclear whether the wedding is legitimate or if it was a fun event thrown together to pass the time.

After this happy moment, the trailer shows a heated argument amongst the roommates as security jumps in to help break up a brawl.

Between the hook-ups, break-ups, old flames, and fighting, Season 5 is set to bring the drama.  Fans can watch as the Summer House “quaranteam” takes on the stress of living, working, and partying together 24-7 during the pandemic.

Summer House premieres Thursday, February 4th at 9/8c on Bravo.

Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard Season 2, Episode 5 Recap: We Have a Special Guest Arriving

The crew of  Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard  had a relaxing first week of vacation, but now the cracks are starting to show. Last week’s episode ended with an explosive argument between Bria and Jasmine, and this week’s showing features the continuation, plus more. Two of the cast members revisit an old conversation, and Jasmine lets the rest of the group in on a massive secret she’s been hiding. Here’s everything that went down on Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard Season 2, Episode 5: The Worst Kept Secret.

Preston and Bria have serious issues they need to work out…

Bria and Jasmine reached an understanding after their conversation turned into another screaming match. As they were working out their issues about  Mariah Torres  re-entering the house for a short period, Preston voiced his thoughts about Bria’s behavior. When she told Preston not to “f*ck with me,” he replied, saying nobody on their cast was scared of her. “I don’t want you to be scared of me, but don’t play me with that ass sh*t,” Bria said.

As Summer led her away, Preston told the rest of the table how big of a brat Bria was. “She’s a brat, and we know it.” Oof.

The fighting in public was too much for Nick. He tried calming the situation with a passion. “We look insane right now,” he told his crew.

Later in the episode, the pair discussed their issues and improved their situation. Preston did tell Bria that he believed she could be a “brat” at times, but he made sure she knew he loved her.

Preston and Phil talk it out…

The last few episodes saw the house discussing whether Phil Brooks should be allowed to return. Spoiler: He doesn’t, and for that, we’re thankful. However, he has had more camera time this season than most of the fans would like.

His 30 seconds of screen time this week were spent on Facetime with Preston. The latter shared his feelings with the house in previous episodes about how Phil’s comments, like “soft” and “sus,” made him feel like a gay man. During Preston’s call with him, Phil took some ownership of his behavior (even though he had trashed their feelings days before).

Phil told Preston that when he met them the first time, he was extremely drunk. However, he said his apology was genuine, and going to therapy has helped him reflect on his former self. They ended the call on a good note, and hopefully, that’s the last of Phil on  SHMV .

Summer and Noelle have another misunderstanding…

Because Bria is the group’s ghost producer, she asked Summer and Noelle how they were doing during a girls’ moment in the  backyard pool . In case you need a reminder, Noelle felt some type of way about wanting to pursue Alex since he and Summer had sexual relationships in the past. For Noelle and some of the others in the house, it seemed weird that Summer would encourage Noelle to go after Alex but omit the fact that they had sex. And yes, it’s personal information that she doesn’t have to share. But she was sure willing to blurt it out during the  first group dinner  of the season.

“I thought you understood the dealings that we had,” Summer told Noelle. She continued, saying what “happened was a miscommunication.” She added: “I should’ve told you, ‘Yes, he’s been inside me, and I’ve made him c*m, like, how many times?'”

Later, Summer and Noelle were able to talk by themselves. “If it felt like you were being attacked out there, I apologize,” she said. There wasn’t much more to this conversation. For now, at least. If there will be more drama, we’ll have to keep tuning in to find out.

Jasmine is PREGNANT!

As we know, Jasmine is in the summer house this year without her husband,  Silas Cooper . He was deployed during the time of filming, but we’ve seen him on Facetime a few times. One of the Cooper’s biggest storylines last year involved their life as newlyweds and hopeful parents.

Jasmine entered Season 2 pregnant but held the secret until she reached her second trimester. Now that it’s finally happened, she wanted to let her cast in on the secret.

She teased her housemates the entire day that she was bringing a guest for dinner. She gave a speech at the table, speaking about how she needed them this summer with Silas away. Finally, she asked everybody to raise a glass to celebrate their new baby .

Amir seemed to be the only one caught by surprise. Because … what else is new when it comes to Amir?

That’s all for this episode, folks. We’ll be back next week for another recap.

In the meantime, continue watching  Summer House: Martha’s Vineyard  on Sundays at 9/8c.

Harmony in the Woods, near Hawley, seeks larger occupancy ahead of fourth season

Harmony seeks to expand occupancy from 150 to 225.

Palmyra Township officials have been notified that Harmony in the Woods, an outdoor amphitheater near Hawley, is interested in expanding the maximum number of patrons from 150 to 225.

The entertainment venue, which opened in 2020, begins its schedule of 22 concert dates July 5, running through Sept. 7. The landscaped amphitheater, carved on a slope, is nestled in a forest just beyond Hawley Borough, off Route 6 (Welwood Avenue) on the way to Lake Wallenpaupack.

Edward Sader, project manager for the Harmony in the Woods, talked about the plans at the Palmyra Township (Wayne County) supervisors' April 1 meeting. The Harmony board looked at traffic, emergency action plans, and the Americans with Disabilities Act and parking accommodation and access for people with mobility issues.

Although the nearby Lake Region branch of The Dime Bank gave approval to use its lot for auxiliary parking, due to the extra traffic monitoring required, Harmony chose to use its own site. Harmony asked the township for a change to the conditions applied at the conditional use hearing prior to the venue opening, allowing for an increased maximum occupancy. Last year, Harmony increased the size of its parking lot by adding two more ADA parking spaces.

Sader said Harmony has been well able to provide security and traffic control at its own site, with the present entrance at 19 Imagination Way.

Supervisors scheduled a public hearing to amend the conditions, 15 minutes before the 7 p.m. supervisors' meeting on Monday, May 6, at the township offices. Sader said that they have had great support from neighbors and would be interested to see how they like it, four years later.

Buried treasure: The splendor of the Moscow Metro system

Owen hatherley the calvert journal january 29, 2013.

. Reposted from  The Calvert Journal , a daily briefing on the culture and creativity of modern Russia.

. Post-Communist underground stations in Moscow, like the recently completed Pyatnitskoye shosse, are still, very visibly, Moscow Metro stations. Regardless of the need or otherwise for nuclear shelters, they’re still buried deep in the ground; ubiquitous still is the expensive, laborious, but highly legible and architecturally breathtaking practice of providing high-ceilinged vaults with the trains leaving from either side. There have been attempts at “normal” metro lines, like the sober stations built under Khrushchev, or the “Light Metro” finished in 2003, but they didn’t catch on. Largely, the model developed in the mid-1930s continues, and not just in Moscow — extensions in Kiev or St Petersburg, or altogether new systems in Kazan or Almaty, carry on this peculiar tradition. Metro stations are still being treated as palaces of the people, over two decades after the “people’s” states collapsed. This could be a question of maintaining quality control, but then quality is not conspicuous in the Russian built environment. So why does this endure?

summer house season 5 house tour

. The original, 1930s Moscow Metro was the place where even the most skeptical fellow travellers threw away their doubts and surrendered. Bertolt Brecht wrote an awe-filled poem on the subject, “The Moscow Workers Take Possession of the Great Metro on April 27, 1935,” dropping his habitual irony and dialectic to describe the Metro workers perusing the system they’d built on the day of its opening. At the end, the poet gasps, his guard down, “This is the grand picture that once upon a time/ rocked the writers who foresaw it” — that is, that here, at least, a dream of “Communism” had been palpably built. It was not an uncommon reaction, then or now, nostalgia notwithstanding. The first stations, those Brecht was talking about, were not particularly over-ornamented, especially by the standards of what came later, but their extreme opulence and spaciousness was still overwhelming. Stations like Sokolniki or Kropotkinskaya didn’t bludgeon with classical reminisces and mosaics. Yet three things about the underground designs created by architects Alexei Dushkin, Ivan Fomin, Dmitry Chechulin et al were unprecedented in any previous public transport network, whether Charles Holden’s London, Alfred Grenander’s Berlin or Hector Guimard’s Paris. First, the huge size of the halls, their high ceilings and widely-spaced columns; second, the quality of the materials, with various coloured marbles shipped in from all over the USSR; and third, the lighting, emerging from individually-designed, surreal chandeliers, often murkily atmospheric, designed to create mood rather than light.

The Evolving Danger of the New Bird Flu

An unusual outbreak of the disease has spread to dairy herds in multiple u.s. states..

From “The New York Times,” I’m Sabrina Tavernise, and this is “The Daily.”

[MUSIC PLAYING]

The outbreak of bird flu that is tearing through the nation’s poultry farms is the worst in US history. But scientists say it’s now starting to spread into places and species it’s never been before.

Today, my colleague, Emily Anthes, explains.

It’s Monday, April 22.

Emily, welcome back to the show.

Thanks for having me. Happy to be here.

So, Emily, we’ve been talking here on “The Daily” about prices of things and how they’ve gotten so high, mostly in the context of inflation episodes. And one of the items that keeps coming up is eggs. Egg prices were through the roof last year, and we learned it was related to this. Avian flu has been surging in the United States. You’ve been covering this. Tell us what’s happening.

Yes, so I have been covering this virus for the last few years. And the bird flu is absolutely tearing through poultry flocks, and that is affecting egg prices. That’s a concern for everyone, for me and for my family. But when it comes to scientists, egg prices are pretty low on their list of concerns. Because they see this bird flu virus behaving differently than previous versions have. And they’re getting nervous, in particular, about the fact that this virus is reaching places and species where it’s never been before.

OK, so bird flu, though, isn’t new. I mean I remember hearing about cases in Asia in the ‘90s. Remind us how it began.

Bird flu refers to a bunch of different viruses that are adapted to spread best in birds. Wild water birds, in particular, are known for carrying these viruses. And flu viruses are famous for also being shapeshifters. So they’re constantly swapping genes around and evolving into new strains. And as you mentioned back in the ‘90s, a new version of bird flu, a virus known as H5N1, emerged in Asia. And it has been spreading on and off around the world since then, causing periodic outbreaks.

And how are these outbreaks caused?

So wild birds are the reservoir for the virus, which means they carry it in their bodies with them around the world as they fly and travel and migrate. And most of the time, these wild birds, like ducks and geese, don’t even get very sick from this virus. But they shed it. So as they’re traveling over a poultry farm maybe, if they happen to go to the bathroom in a pond that the chickens on the farm are using or eat some of the feed that chickens on the farm are eating, they can leave the virus behind.

And the virus can get into chickens. In some cases, it causes mild illness. It’s what’s known as low pathogenic avian influenza. But sometimes the virus mutates and evolves, and it can become extremely contagious and extremely fatal in poultry.

OK, so the virus comes through wild birds, but gets into farms like this, as you’re describing. How have farms traditionally handled outbreaks, when they do happen?

Well, because this threat isn’t new, there is a pretty well-established playbook for containing outbreaks. It’s sometimes known as stamping out. And brutally, what it means is killing the birds. So the virus is so deadly in this highly pathogenic form that it’s sort of destined to kill all the birds on a farm anyway once it gets in. So the response has traditionally been to proactively depopulate or cull all the birds, so it doesn’t have a chance to spread.

So that’s pretty costly for farmers.

It is. Although the US has a program where it will reimburse farmers for their losses. And the way these reimbursements work is they will reimburse farmers only for the birds that are proactively culled, and not for those who die naturally from the virus. And the thinking behind that is it’s a way to incentivize farmers to report outbreaks early.

So, OK, lots of chickens are killed in a way to manage these outbreaks. So we know how to deal with them. But what about now? Tell me about this new strain.

So this new version of the virus, it emerged in 2020.

After the deadly outbreak of the novel coronavirus, authorities have now confirmed an outbreak of the H5N1 strain of influenza, a kind of bird flu.

And pretty quickly it became clear that a couple things set it apart.

A bald eagle found dead at Carvins Cove has tested positive for the highly contagious bird flu.

This virus, for whatever reason, seemed very good at infecting all sorts of wild birds that we don’t normally associate with bird flu.

[BIRD CRYING]

He was kind of stepping, and then falling over, and using its wing to right itself.

Things like eagles and condors and pelicans.

We just lost a parliament of owls in Minneapolis.

Yeah, a couple of high profile nests.

And also in the past, wild birds have not traditionally gotten very sick from this virus. And this version of the virus not only spread widely through the wild bird population, but it proved to be devastating.

The washing up along the East Coast of the country from Scotland down to Suffolk.

We were hearing about mass die-offs of seabirds in Europe by the hundreds and the thousands.

And the bodies of the dead dot the island wherever you look.

Wow. OK. So then as we know, this strain, like previous ones, makes its way from wild animals to farmed animals, namely to chickens. But it’s even more deadly.

Absolutely. And in fact, it has already caused the worst bird flu outbreak in US history. So more than 90 million birds in the US have died as a result of this virus.

90 million birds.

Yes, and I should be clear that represents two things. So some of those birds are birds who naturally got infected and died from the virus. But the vast majority of them are birds that were proactively culled. What it adds up to is, is 90 million farmed birds in the US have died since this virus emerged. And it’s not just a chicken problem. Another thing that has been weird about this virus is it has jumped into other kinds of farms. It is the first time we’ve seen a bird flu virus jump into US livestock.

And it’s now been reported on a number of dairy farms across eight US states. And that’s just something that’s totally unprecedented.

So it’s showing up at Dairy farms now. You’re saying that bird flu has now spread to cows. How did that happen?

So we don’t know exactly how cows were first infected, but most scientists’ best guess is that maybe an infected wild bird that was migrating shed the virus into some cattle feed or a pasture or a pond, and cattle picked it up. The good news is they don’t seem to get nearly as sick as chickens do. They are generally making full recoveries on their own in a couple of weeks.

OK, so no mass culling of cows?

No, that doesn’t seem to be necessary at this point. But the bad news is that it’s starting to look like we’re seeing this virus spread from cow to cow. We don’t know exactly how that’s happening yet. But anytime you see cow-to-cow or mammal-to-mammal transmission, that’s a big concern.

And why is that exactly?

Well, there are a bunch of reasons. First, it could allow the outbreak to get much bigger, much faster, which might increase the risk to the food supply. And we might also expect it to increase the risk to farm workers, people who might be in contact with these sick cows.

Right now, the likelihood that a farmer who gets this virus passes it on is pretty low. But any time you see mammal-to-mammal transmission, it increases the chance that the virus will adapt and possibly, maybe one day get good at spreading between humans. To be clear, that’s not something that there’s any evidence happening in cows right now. But the fact that there’s any cow-to-cow transmission happening at all is enough to have scientists a bit concerned.

And then if we think more expansively beyond what’s happening on farms, there’s another big danger lurking out there. And that’s what happens when this virus gets into wild animals, vast populations that we can’t control.

We’ll be right back.

So, Emily, you said that another threat was the threat of flu in wild animal populations. Clearly, of course, it’s already in wild birds. Where else has it gone?

Well, the reason it’s become such a threat is because of how widespread it’s become in wild birds. So they keep reintroducing it to wild animal populations pretty much anywhere they go. So we’ve seen the virus repeatedly pop up in all sorts of animals that you might figure would eat a wild bird, so foxes, bobcats, bears. We actually saw it in a polar bear, raccoons. So a lot of carnivores and scavengers.

The thinking is that these animals might stumble across a sick or dead bird, eat it, and contract the virus that way. But we’re also seeing it show up in some more surprising places, too. We’ve seen the virus in a bottle-nosed dolphin, of all places.

And most devastatingly, we’ve seen enormous outbreaks in other sorts of marine mammals, especially sea lions and seals.

So elephant seals, in particular in South America, were just devastated by this virus last fall. My colleague Apoorva Mandavilli and I were talking to some scientists in South America who described to us what they called a scene from hell, of walking out onto a beach in Argentina that is normally crowded with chaotic, living, breathing, breeding, elephant seals — and the beach just being covered by carcass, after carcass, after carcass.

Mostly carcasses of young newborn pups. The virus seemed to have a mortality rate of 95 percent in these elephant seal pups, and they estimated that it might have killed more than 17,000 of the pups that were born last year. So almost the entire new generation of this colony. These are scientists that have studied these seals for decades. And they said they’ve never seen anything like it before.

And why is it so far reaching, Emily? I mean, what explains these mass die-offs?

There are probably a few explanations. One is just how much virus is out there in the environment being shed by wild birds into water and onto beaches. These are also places that viruses like this haven’t been before. So it’s reaching elephant seals and sea lions in South America that have no prior immunity.

There’s also the fact that these particular species, these sea lions and seals, tend to breed in these huge colonies all crowded together on beaches. And so what that means is if a virus makes its way into the colony, it’s very conducive conditions for it to spread. And scientists think that that’s actually what’s happening now. That it’s not just that all these seals are picking up the virus from individual birds, but that they’re actually passing it to each other.

So basically, this virus is spreading to places it’s never been before, kind of virgin snow territory, where animals just don’t have the immunity against it. And once it gets into a population packed on a beach, say, of elephant seals, it’s just like a knife through butter.

Absolutely. And an even more extreme example of that is what we’re starting to see happen in Antarctica, where there’s never been a bird flu outbreak before until last fall, for the first time, this virus reached the Antarctic mainland. And we are now seeing the virus move through colonies of not only seabirds and seals, but penguin colonies, which have not been exposed to these viruses before.

And it’s too soon to say what the toll will be. But penguins also, of course, are known for breeding in these large colonies.

Probably. don’t have many immune defenses against this virus, and of course, are facing all these other environmental threats. And so there’s a lot of fear that you add on the stress of a bird flu virus, and it could just be a tipping point for penguins.

Emily, at this point, I’m kind of wondering why more people aren’t talking about this. I mean, I didn’t know any of this before having this conversation with you, and it feels pretty worrying.

Well, a lot of experts and scientists are talking about this with rising alarm and in terms that are quite stark. They’re talking about the virus spreading through wild animal populations so quickly and so ferociously that they’re calling it an ecological disaster.

But that’s a disaster that sometimes seems distant from us, both geographically, we’re talking about things that are happening maybe at the tip of Argentina or in Antarctica. And also from our concerns of our everyday lives, what’s happening in Penguins might not seem like it has a lot to do with the price of a carton of eggs at the grocery store. But I think that we should be paying a lot of attention to how this virus is moving through animal populations, how quickly it’s moving through animal populations, and the opportunities that it is giving the virus to evolve into something that poses a much bigger threat to human health.

So the way it’s spreading in wild animals, even in remote places like Antarctica, that’s important to watch, at least in part because there’s a real danger to people here.

So we know that the virus can infect humans, and that generally it’s not very good at spreading between humans. But the concern all along has been that if this virus has more opportunities to spread between mammals, it will get better at spreading between them. And that seems to be what is happening in seals and sea lions. Scientists are already seeing evidence that the virus is adapting as it passes from marine mammal to marine mammal. And that could turn it into a virus that’s also better at spreading between people.

And if somebody walks out onto a beach and touches a dead sea lion, if their dog starts playing with a sea lion carcass, you could imagine that this virus could make its way out of marine mammals and into the human population. And if it’s this mammalian adapted version of the virus that makes its way out, that could be a bigger threat to human health.

So the sheer number of hosts that this disease has, the more opportunity it has to mutate, and the more chance it has to mutate in a way that would actually be dangerous for people.

Yes, and in particular, the more mammalian hosts. So that gives the virus many more opportunities to become a specialist in mammals instead of a specialist in birds, which is what it is right now.

Right. I like that, a specialist in mammals. So what can we do to contain this virus?

Well, scientists are exploring new options. There’s been a lot of discussion about whether we should start vaccinating chickens in the US. The government, USDA labs, have been testing some poultry vaccines. It’s probably scientifically feasible. There are challenges there, both in terms of logistics — just how would you go about vaccinating billions of chickens every year. There are also trade questions. Traditionally, a lot of countries have not been willing to accept poultry products from countries that vaccinate their poultry.

And there’s concern about whether the virus might spread undetected in flocks that are vaccinated. So as we saw with COVID, the vaccine can sometimes stop you from getting sick, but it doesn’t necessarily stop infection. And so countries are worried they might unknowingly import products that are harboring the virus.

And what about among wild animals? I mean, how do you even begin to get your head around that?

Yeah, I mean, thinking about vaccinating wild animals maybe makes vaccinating all the chickens in the US look easy. There has been some discussion of limited vaccination campaigns, but that’s not feasible on a global scale. So unfortunately, the bottom line is there isn’t a good way to stop spread in wild animals. We can try to protect some vulnerable populations, but we’re not going to stop the circulation of this virus.

So, Emily, we started this conversation with a kind of curiosity that “The Daily” had about the price of eggs. And then you explained the bird flu to us. And then somehow we ended up learning about an ecological disaster that’s unfolding all around us, and potentially the source of the next human pandemic. That is pretty scary.

It is scary, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed by it. And I feel like I should take a step back and say none of this is inevitable. None of this is necessarily happening tomorrow. But this is why scientists are concerned and why they think it’s really important to keep a very close eye on what’s happening both on farms and off farms, as this virus spreads through all sorts of animal populations.

One thing that comes up again and again and again in my interviews with people who have been studying bird flu for decades, is how this virus never stops surprising them. And sometimes those are bad surprises, like these elephant seal die-offs, the incursions into dairy cattle. But there are some encouraging signs that have emerged recently. We’re starting to see some early evidence that some of the bird populations that survived early brushes with this virus might be developing some immunity. So that’s something that maybe could help slow the spread of this virus in animal populations.

We just don’t entirely know how this is going to play out. Flu is a very difficult, wily foe. And so that’s one reason scientists are trying to keep such a close, attentive eye on what’s happening.

Emily, thank you.

Thanks for having me.

Here’s what else you should know today.

On this vote, the yeas are 366 and the nays are 58. The bill is passed.

On Saturday, in four back-to-back votes, the House voted resoundingly to approve a long-stalled package of aid to Ukraine, Israel and other American allies, delivering a major victory to President Biden, who made aid to Ukraine one of his top priorities.

On this vote, the yeas are 385, and the no’s are 34 with one answering present. The bill is passed without objection.

The House passed the component parts of the $95 billion package, which included a bill that could result in a nationwide ban of TikTok.

On this vote, the yeas are 311 and the nays are 112. The bill is passed.

Oh, one voting present. I missed it, but thank you.

In a remarkable breach of custom, Democrats stepped in to supply the crucial votes to push the legislation past hard-line Republican opposition and bring it to the floor.

The House will be in order.

The Senate is expected to pass the legislation as early as Tuesday.

About Dinamo Elektrostal

Moscow’s Dinamo Elektrostal are gearing up for their fifth EHL season having frequently picked off impressive wins but have yet to top their particular group in their previous attempts.

There has been a reasonable level of turnover from 2020 with Anton Noshin, Evgenii Mokrousov, Aleksei Godenkov and Ivan Zuikov joining the newly formed TsOP Moskomsport outfit. Danill Karagodin, Mikhail Nekludov and Ilya Larikov have all retired.

Their replacements are mostly youngsters with Dmitry Zheleznyakov, Aleksei Samylkin, Petr Agapov, Ilia Bartenev, Andrei Gribanov and Oleg Kulakov joining their line-up.

The Summer House Cast Spills New Information on Balloon Guy Joe: "We Like Joe"

Plus, hear Ciara Miller and Paige DeSorbo's honest thoughts on Balloon Guy Joe.

summer house season 5 house tour

There's nothing the Summer House  cast loves more than a theme party, and their latest — an alien extravaganza complete with several impressive balloon decorations — kicked off on Season 8, Episode 9 (which aired April 18). While there's still more to come next week, one party guest already has everyone talking: none other than the man who supplied the aforementioned balloons, aka "Balloon Guy Joe."

Who is Balloon Guy Joe?

Balloon Guy Joe works for the party rental company that supplied balloons for the Hamptons 500 party on Summer House Season 8, Episode 6 . At the time, Lindsay Hubbard  thought he was "hot" and decided that in the future she would try and set him up with  Danielle Olivera  or  Gabby Prescod . An opportunity arose when the group decided to throw an alien-themed party.

As Lindsay recalled on the Summer House After Show , "I had met him, and I was like, 'Girls, I met this guy, I'm taken, but he's hot and someone needs to get on this.' And I was even like, 'Am I seeing things?' and every girl was like 'Nope, he's hot!' Even West was like, 'He's f-cking hot!'"

So, Lindsay ordered balloons from the same party rental company, and when Joe showed up, she invited him to return for the alien bash later that night.

What happened between Balloon Guy Joe, Danielle Olivera, and Gabby Prescod?

Danielle and Gabby both found Balloon Guy Joe to be "attractive," and each of them talked to him at the alien party (which is set to continue on Summer House Season 8, Episode 10 next week).

On the Summer House After Show , Danielle doubled down on her attraction for Balloon Guy Joe, noting, "He's a very good-looking man." Gabby, for her part, said Joe was "cute in his balloon gear."

Elsewhere on the Summer House After Show , Danielle and Gabby's castmates weighed in on Balloon Guy Joe.

Paige Hits Back at Questions About Her Future with Craig: "It's Gonna Be on My Terms"

"He looks good f-cking setting balloons up," West said. "That's a balloon beast."

Jesse Solomon  agreed, praising Joe for constantly "work[ing] like a dog."

Ciara Miller , meanwhile, said, "A man is very different when he's on his job and he's working. He looks like he's in charge. It's like a jobfish — a catfish a little bit," she said with a laugh. "He looked sexy, then he gets not in his work clothes and I'm like, 'What the f-ck are you wearing? You're not as hot as I thought you were.'"

"Sorry, Joe," Ciara added. "Not that you're not hot, but..."

"Sorry, Joe," Paige DeSorbo repeated.

Ciara concluded her thoughts on Balloon Guy Joe by giving him props for being good at his job. "He really helped me finagle that alien party. I had special balloons I needed that were gonna take me forever to blow up, and he did it in two seconds," she said. "We like Joe."
