Some Fun Facts about New Belgium

  • After a year of being an employee, you get a personal bike designed by New Belgium. (which many employees ride to work)
  • Employees use a slide to get from the second floor to the first, there are ping pong tables for break time, and many people get around the brewery on scooters

Touring New Belgium ended up being one of my favorite parts of our Asheville visit. I can’t recommend it enough!

On our second night in Asheville, we were looking up dinner options and decided to try Zambra for tapas. When we arrived, we realized that we couldn’t have picked a better restaurant. There was live music steps away from our candlelit dinner, and the tapas were phenomenal.

We stopped in Thirsty Monk’s for a drink after dinner. It’s very unassuming from the outside; you would never expect this place to have three stories. The top floor is an exclusive club; the main floor has the bar with a vast selection of craft beer on tap or, take the stairs down to the basement level where you’ll find the Belgian Bar.

Oh also, this brewery has a thing for stickers.

When Noah found out I had never been to an arcade, he decided to take me to The Retrocade . Located on the west side of Asheville this arcade is two stories of fun. We spent two hours playing pinball, air hockey, billiards, and so many other games.

A Great Asheville Brewery Tour

T he explosion of craft brewing in Asheville has rightly earned it the title of Beer City. A fan of the brewed beverage myself, a brewery tour was certainly in order on my last trip. By no means definitive, my great Asheville Brewery Tour covered six different breweries in Asheville. From major national breweries to the first in town, my tour took me across town and to breweries big and small. Even with all the beer I drank on this tour, it still left quite a few of Asheville’s many breweries on the outside. At the end of the post I’ll have a list of “honorable mentions” you might want to visit and extend your Asheville Brewery Tour. Also, there is a bit of similarity in the names of these breweries. I’ll let you read on to see just what it is.

Start You Asheville Brewery Tour at New Belgium Brewing Company

Of the two “major” breweries located in Asheville, I settled on New Belgium. The brewery is more centrally located than Sierra Nevada. It stands across the French Broad River from Asheville’s River Arts District. New Belgium selected the location because of its previously degraded state, with the intention of both restoring the property itself and providing economic benefits to the surrounding area. The location contains the brewery and a separate tasting room with a great view of the river.

Cool little tickets from the New Belgium tour!

It was really easy to book the tour online and I recommend doing so decently in advance. The tours are free, so the prime times have a tendency to fill up fast. I lucked into a morning spot which allowed us to start at New Belgium and then venture out across the city for the rest of the tours. When you arrive for your tour, do so in advance and get a head start in the tasting room. Unless you’re a super dedicated New Belgium fan, they are bound to have flavors you’ve never heard of, let alone tasted. The tour guide will gather you all up when the time comes.

New Belgium’s tours are a great mix of in-depth and casual. Our guide was really knowledgeable and had a pretty good feel for our group. The group sizes aren’t too large which lets you interact with your guide if you are so inclined. The first part of the tour explains the history of New Belgium and their search for the second location which ended up in Asheville. Going in I really had no idea just how important finding the right water was to the brewing process and Asheville’s water hit all the right marks.

Through out the tour you get some great touches of just what kind of company New Belgium is. After the opening portion of the tour, you get to take a slide to the lower floors which was a blast. The large collection of bikes you find towards the end is indicative of the environmentally responsible culture that New Belgium is known for. That and the free bikes they give to employees on their first anniversary. The time I spent at New Belgium helped create a connection between those visiting and the people who really make the beer.

New Belgium was a great way to start our tour across Beer City. They provided quite a few free samples along the way, so you’ll be feeling good by the end. The location, history, and friendly atmosphere at New Belgium was a great combination and made for the perfect tour.

Visit Wedge Brewing Company in the River Arts District

On my 2017 trip to North Carolina, Wedge was one of the breweries I intended to visit. However, it was closed for renovations on that trip. This year, I put it on my priority list for a visit. Wedge did not disappoint me either. The small brewery (Wedge Studios to be exact) stands along the French Broad River, a stones throw across from New Belgium. It lies in the heart of Asheville’s River Arts District. Wedge is an excellent spot to grab a refreshing beer after browsing the galleries.

My flight at wedge with four delicious beers

While there isn’t exactly a tour of the brewing operations at Wedge, its hard to miss them at work. The brewery is small enough that you can look right in while ordering your beers. I wanted to take advantage of the wide selection on offer, so I settled for the flight of four. The four I tried included Payne’s Pale, the Witbier, the Penny Hammer Stout and Derailed. These four provided a pretty broad cross section of styles and were all mighty delicious. Of the four, the Penny Hammer Stout was my favorite though it probably isn’t the best choice on a hot summer day. For something that is simply refreshing, the Witbier will do the trick.

Wedge Brewing Company is a funky little place with a great cross section of beers. We visited their original location, but they opened a second just down the road in Early 2017. Wedge is a staple of the craft scene in Asheville and no Asheville Brewery Tour is complete without a stop here.

Take Your Asheville Brewery Tour Downtown to Asheville Brewing Company

Leaving the River Arts District, we were in search of lunch. Seeking some vegan options, we landed on Asheville Brewing Company as our third stop. ABC features three different locations, but the Downtown location in the hoppin-mad South Slope is their current brewing headquarters. Opened in 2005, this location was the first brewery to open on the South Slope. Having been creating amazing pizza along side their beers since 1998, we knew this was a must stop.

Rocket away with Lemon Space Dog at ABC

Needing to refuel and recharge on a hot day, we skipped sitting outside at the massive patio. Any other time of year, the huge covered patio is a must here. The wife and I both ordered pizzas, of which they are super vegan friendly. Finding a great brewery that also does great food is a supreme find. Keeping with the idea of refreshing beers, I went with the Lemon Space Dog. If you’re a fan of citrus undertones in your beers, then this will hit the spot for sure. It was so good, I ordered a second one! Asheville Brewing Company has a pretty wide selection for you to choose from. Thirteen beers were on tap when I went, including their award-winning Ninja Porter which I understand to be delicious as well.

ABC’s Downtown Asheville location is also a fantastic place to get a start for the middle portion of this Asheville Brewery Tour. Being located on the South Slope, you can quite easily walk to any number of other breweries. If you want to do a walking tour of the South Slope, check out the extending your tour section at the bottom. Most of the breweries there can be checked off your list by walking around the South Slope. For us, the day was simply too hot for a walkabout.

Taste More of North Carolina’s Scene at Catawaba Brewing Company

Next up on the list was a trip over to Catawaba Brewing Company ‘s location on the South Slope. The location here specializes in smaller craft batches and where the company does its barrel aging. It is a beautiful location that is highly welcoming and airy on the inside. The small brewing setup is right in the main area and you can get up close with the machinery. Not a proper tour, but its about as close as you’ll get and in a great spot.

This one was mighty peachy in my book

With a focus on smaller, limited batches at the South Slope location it seemed only fitting to go for one of those while there. June and July are the perfect time for Catawaba’s Peach of Mind. The cool undertones of peach come through and and the lower alcohol content of the grisette was good for the middle of this tour. Depending on the time of year, they will have a few limited releases available along with their nine year-round beers. I really enjoyed the stop at Catawaba, but it was starting to get into the early afternoon and couldn’t stay for more than one beer.

Asheville’s Amazing Wicked Weed Brewing

The penultimate stop on this Asheville Brewery Tour took us to Wicked Weed Brewing . Wicked has been a huge player in the beer scene in Asheville. They have two location on the South Slope, though they brew and serve radically different styles. Their original location still houses a 15-barrel brewery downstairs and serves their “regular” beers so to speak. The company also operates the Funkatorium , which is home to Wicked Weed’s more unusual offerings. The Funkatorium serves up sour and funky beers which aren’t what you’ll find in your normal neighborhood bar. Not being a fan of sour beers, I chose the Pub.

Just the right kick of hops from this Appalachian

Continuing a trend of refreshing, summer beers, I avoided anything too heavy. I settled on the Appalachian IPA and it was fantastic. Considered a session IPA by Wicked Weed, I could have easily sat around the rest of that hot day drinking a few of these. It had just the right amount of hoppiness that didn’t overwhelm you like some IPAs can. Also, one dollar of every pour goes to the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy to support their work. If you don’t like IPAs, Wicked Weed has a pretty wide variety of beers available, so you’re guaranteed to find one you like.

If you’re wanting a tour of the brewpub, you’ll need to sign-up in person the week of your tour. We didn’t arrive in time and no spots opened up when we were there. You also have the option of a Grand Cru Experience. This tour will take you to all four facilities, behind-the-scenes and free samples of a ton of beer to boot. If you’re looking for a single brewery to tour with, Wicked Weed is your best choice.

Highland Brewing Company: The Finale of This Asheville Brewery Tour

The final stop of our afternoon was at the beginning. Highland Brewing Company was the first craft brewery to open in Asheville in 1994. Since then Highland has been a craft leader in Asheville and continues to expand and grow to this day. We finished off our Asheville Brewery Tour with a tour of Highland’s facility. These tours are free and need to be booked in advance, but we didn’t have much trouble. Our tour was small and had a nice intimate feel. The tour gave a really great look at the brewing process. Unlike at New Belgium where everything was behind glass, Highland’s tour was right on the brew floor. It was a really neat experience to stand alongside the HUGE fermentation tanks. The tour at Highland isn’t to be missed.

Some fancy table decorations made in a Highland can

While you’ll get a small sample of their Gaelic Ale before the tour, stay afterwards to enjoy the bar. They offer a wide selection of their own beers in a really nice open space. There is almost always live music in the evenings and the rooftop bar offers some great views. If you’re looking for food, they have a rotation of food trucks out front.

Highland was a real innovator when it brought the craft scene to Asheville. I don’t think any Asheville Brewery Tour can be complete without a visit here. Its good to get a feel and understanding for why this family-owned brewery has been so successful. They are continuing to grow to this day. When we returned from Asheville, my favorite local bar started carrying them on draft. A few days later I noticed they were my in local Publix too. I hope that more breweries in Asheville and the area can have the success and reach Highland has had.

Extending Your Asheville Brewery Tour

By no means was my Asheville Brewery Tour exhaustive. You can only drink so many beers in a single day and truly enjoy all of them. That being said, there are a couple of ways you can extend your Asheville Brewery Tour. If you want to do some walking, focusing on just the South Slope will offer up plenty of beers. Hi-Wire Brewing, Twin Leaf, Burial Beer Co., Green Man Brewing, and Bharamari Brewing are all within an easy walk of the three South Slope breweries I mentioned earlier. Add in the Funkatorium and that makes a pretty epic 9-stop tour if you’ve got it in you.

Another way to extend your Asheville Brewery Tour is by taking your stroll a little closer to downtown. Thirsty Monk, Lexington Ave Brewery, and One World Brewing are all right downtown and not too far from your South Slope tour. If you’re looking to change things up a bit, you can hit up Urban Orchard Cidery in West Asheville or Noble Cider just a little further out of town. For a multi-day Asheville Brewery Tour, you could go further afield to Brevard. There you’ll find Brevard Brewing Company (one of my favorites) and Oskar Blues as well. Oh and don’t forget that Sierra Nevada is just outside of town as well.

Asheville is truly the epicenter of the craft brewing movement in the South. There is such a huge variety of beers to choose from, each with its own unique story. With so many different places, it would be nearly impossible to hit them all on a single trip. So it looks like I’ll be needing to make another trip soon to check some more off my list. If you have any suggestions, leave them in the comments below or send me a message on Facebook.

Earlier this summer I went on a wheat and dairy farm tour in western NC.

Not only did we get to tour a dairy farm, a wheat farm, a MilkCo production facility, explore local Asheville restaurants AND stay in downtown bed and breakfasts – we also were able to eat (and drink!) things that included wheat and dairy.

What kind of wheat do you drink? BEER.

New Belgium Brewery Asheville beer tour

New Belgium brewery was probably my favorite stop on this whole trip!

I’m not even a huge beer drinker, but our tour guides (Mike & Mike) were AWESOME, friendly, hilarious, genuine people. I simply love when people enjoy what they do and believe in what they (and their company) stands for.

New Belgium Brewery tour - tour guides

The biggest message I got through my head during this tour was that New Belgium brewery cares about sustainability .

Everything from their “trifecta of LEED certifications ” down to collecting steam from one processing vessel to use as water later. Their logo is even a BIKE – a fitting symbol, no?

Random fact: They also do small brew testing for new brands, and for their small batches they work with the local River Bend malt house. (A “small batch” starts at 16-17 full size kegs.)

New Belgium Brewing started in Colorado, so when they opened the location up in Asheville they faced a challenge I never even thought about – they had to start by making their most popular beer, Fat Tire , taste the same as it does in Colorado.

Consistency of product is very important, and things like environment, different elevation, and even the water all affect it! Who knew?

This Western Carolina Livestock sign is made up of old photograph shots of the 17 acres that they are now occupying. (Note to self: home decor idea!)

And from there – take the slide, not the stairs.

A trinket from each employee. (I was sworn to secrecy which one was contributed by our guide.)

The cellar is where all the magic happens.

“That’s Bonesy! Bonesy don’t do anything!” (Told you they have fun.)

We got the exclusive “deck view” of the beer production line.

And that’s me, picking a beer off the line, not looking at the right camera.

If you want to work at New Belgium Brewery – good luck! Our tour guide Mike joked that he got his job way before there were 400 applicants per opening.

Some of their employee perks: At your 5-year anniversary, you get a trip to Belgium! After 10 years, you can take a 4-week sabbatical anywhere you want. They also give their employees a bike (surprised?), and a 12-pack of choice per week.

They also have a “taste master” program, where you can give feedback on their brews.

I don’t have any idea why there’s a tiger jumping out of the Fat Tire sign but this picture was too perfect not to include.

Asheville is apparently known as the “Beermuda triangle” with more beer brewed per capita than any other city. Beer city!

So while there are many choices to get your drink on in Asheville, you should definitely check out New Belgium brewery. Their tours are about 90 minutes long and free. There has never been a script, so they are all different depending on your tour guide! There is also a paid private tour available.

They also have an area where you can just hang out, drink a beer and enjoy their beautiful views. So if you’re ever in the Asheville area, hit them up!

New Belgium Asheville begins public brewery tours

September 2, 2016

New Belgium Asheville

New Belgium Brewing Company’s Asheville brewery, which has been producing beer since this past spring, begins offering scheduled public tours Friday, Sept. 2. It is the general public’s first opportunity to book a tour and see inside this highly anticipated brewery.

New Belgium’s free tours run daily on the half hour and reservations are necessary. Starting Friday, September 2, you can  book a tour here .

Brilliant Stream tours the Asheville brewery

Last week, Brilliant Stream participated in media day tours at the facility and found it most impressive. Taking the New Belgium tour would be a worthy adventure for any beer fan or beer novice. Beer fans will especially appreciate the multiple beer stops along the tour route.

On the typical brewery tour, you have to see all the insides of the brewery first before you get to visit the taproom and sample some brews. At New Belgium Asheville, you sample at several tasting stations along the way—inside the brewery—and you still get dropped off in the main taproom at the end. It’s a great concept.

New Belgium Asheville

All tours begin at the Liquid Center. Inside the center you’ll find a large room with lots of beer-on-tap, tables, chairs, packaged beer to take home, growler filler, logo merchandise, and a nice outdoor patio with seating overlooking the French Broad River.

Liquid Center, New Belgium Asheville

While you are waiting for your tour to start, you can purchase a glass of brew and relax for a bit. The huge selection lets you choose from every New Belgium beer that is currently available.

New Belgium Asheville

From the Liquid Center your tour leader will guide you over a winding path to the main brewery building. You can’t take glasses of beer out of the Liquid Center over to the brewery. But don’t worry, New Belgium will take care of you in just a few minutes.

New Belgium Asheville

The brewery itself is a thing of beauty. All aspects, from the landscaping and architecture to the brewing equipment and tasting stations, show great attention to detail.

new belgium asheville

As you approach the brewery building, you’ll notice three tall, shiny metal tanks sitting out on the left. These are a special heat capturing and transferring mechanism for energy conservation. They are indicative of New Belgium’s commitment to sustainability.

New Belgium Asheville

Entering the building, the first stop is a large room containing the brewhouse. It’s made up of four big stainless steel vessels: mash tun, later tun, brew kettle, and whirlpool.

New Belgium Asheville

Here’s a close-up photo of the colorful tile work at the base of the tanks. Absolutely beautiful. Click on it to see a larger image. It is all totally custom. A local artist made the tiles from scratch and installed them in a pattern inspired by a hop cone.

Alex Dwoinen, New Belgium Asheville

Alex Dwoinen, Brewing Manager, New Belgium Asheville, is the main man responsible for overseeing the brewing program operation.

The Asheville brewery has a production capacity of 500,000 barrels annually. Add that capacity to the Fort Collins, Colorado brewery, and New Belgium’s total capacity is roughly 1.5 million barrels a year.

New Belgium Asheville

Your first special treat is the brewhouse tasting station where you get to sample your initial tour beers.

Next, you traverse through stairways and corridors where you see all the key workings of the brewery, except for the outdoor fermentation tanks. The tour guides are well-versed in brewery details and can answer just about any question you throw at them.

New Belgium Asheville

The main control room is filled with computer equipment. From there, most all brewery activities can be monitored and controlled.

New Belgium Asheville

Brewery workers truly cover all the bases, including keeping the viewing windows sparkling clean.

New Belgium Asheville

Soon, you get to the mid-tour tasting station that appears as if you are right outside the ‘t Brugs Beertje cafe in Bruges, Belgium. They say that’s where the New Belgium founders first got their inspiration for the beer they would make. Daisy Claeys is surely proud and happy about the free advertisement.

New Belgium Asheville

Quality assurance is a key component of a large craft brewery operation. New Belgium’s laboratories are first-rate.

New Belgium Asheville

The packaging room is massive. Kegs, cans, and bottles are all filled, labeled, and packed up for storage here, awaiting shipping. The bottling line can process 480 bottles per minute.

new Belgium Asheville

Opposite the packaging room window is the next tasting station. You won’t want for beer samples on this tour. This bar is constructed with many reclaimed materials.

New Belgium Asheville

To get a good look at the large outdoor fermentation tanks, you have to walk around the outside of the brewery building.

An emphasis on artwork

New Belgium Asheville

Art is displayed all around the brewery facilities. Much of the furnishings and the bar in the Liquid Center were also locally produced. Ninety percent of the artists and crafts people who made the art live within 5 miles of the brewery.

New Belgium Asheville

Much of the artwork, fixtures, and furnishing include materials reclaimed from the old livestock market that originally sat on the space now taken over by the brewery.

N

Though not done by a local artist, this cow was pretty amazing.

Co

While you can sample and purchase all of New Belgium’s current portfolio in the Liquid Center, most of the beers are not yet brewed here. As of last week, the Asheville brewery was only producing three of New Belgium’s many beers. Fat Tire has been brewed here since April 2. Ranger IPA was the second beer produced here, and Citradelic, the third. They will phase in production of additional beers over the coming months until all most if not all the core brands and seasonals will be brewed here (as well as in Colorado). Some of the last beers that might be made in Asheville are the sour beers and the Lips of Faith Series. No timetable has been announced for producing additional beers.

Another great reason for a road trip

All in all, this is definitely another don’t miss stop on an Asheville visit—whether or not you are a beer fan. They do a great jobs of telling the story of New Belgium beer. And an interesting story it is. This brewery tour is another compelling reason to get over to Asheville again.

New Belgium Asheville

Liquid Center 21 Craven St. Asheville, NC

Hours are Monday-Saturday from 11 A.M.–8 P.M. and Sunday from 12 P.M. – 8 P.M.

The free tours take approximately 90 minutes and can be booked, first come-first served, here:  http://www.newbelgium.com/Brewery/asheville. For your tour, you should wear closed-toed shoes for safety.

New Belgium Brewing Company is an employee-owned business headquartered in Fort Collins, CO. It’s 800 employee-owners just celebrated the brewery’s 25th anniversary.

This central PA brewery’s tour was named nation’s best. See how to visit, sample beer

A beloved Pennsylvania brewery is once again earning national recognition.

Tröegs Independent Brewing received the top spot among the best brewery tours in the U.S. , according to USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards. Nominees in each category are selected by 10Best editors and topic experts before they are presented to the public for four weeks of online voting.

Here’s what you need to know about Tröegs and the best places for craft beer in Pennsylvania.

Tröegs Independent Brewing claims top brewery tour honor

Located in Hershey, just east of Harrisburg, Tröegs Independent Brewing launched in 1996 with a name that plays on co-founders John and Chris Trogner’s last name and the Dutch word “kroeg,” meaning “pub.”

Tröegs operates as a craft brewery with an emphasis on producing specialty and seasonal beers. The brewery was founded in Harrisburg and moved to Hershey in 2011 following the construction of a new facility.

The brewery’s award-winning tour offers behind-the-scenes access to Tröegs’ mill room, hop cooler, brewhouse deck, fermentation cellars and packaging lines, among other locations. Guests can also peruse an “Art of Tröegs” gallery and receive a free beer of their choice, three samples of Tröegs selections and an exclusive souvenir glass.

“Our tours meander through our working production brewery so you can see how our beer is actually made and the people to make it happen,” Tröegs wrote on its website. “If you’re uncomfortable climbing and descending multiple stairs, standing for extended periods or spending time in extreme heat or cold, we would encourage you to check out our self-guided tour.”

Each 10-person tour takes roughly one hour to complete and costs $15 per person, Tröegs says online. Minors and children are not allowed to join tours, and of-age guests must make sure to bring along a valid ID and wear closed-toed shoes.

According to Tröegs’ online booking system, tours are offered Thursday through Sunday each week from late morning through the evening. You can book a tour online by visiting troegs.com/brewery-tours .

Tröegs is known for some of its staple beers like Perpetual IPA and and Troegenator Double Bock. Some popular seasonal flavors include Nugget Nectar, Mad Elf Ale, Oktoberfest Lager and Double Blizzard.

KALAMAZOO COUNTY, MI — In 1985, Larry Bell opened Kalamazoo Brewing Co. and began brewing Great Lakes Amber Ale out of a 15-gallon soup pot.

Fast forward 39 years and Bell’s beer is now sold in 50 states and Puerto Rico. The brewery was also just named to USA Today’s 10 Best List of brewery tours in the U.S.

It’s the only Michigan spot on the list, landing at No. 6.

In 1993, Bell’s became the first Michigan craft brewery to sell beer by the glass since prohibition when it started selling Beer at its Eccentric Café at 335 E. Kalamazoo Ave. Now, Bell’s brews the bulk of its beer out of a 200,000 square-foot facility in Comstock Township.

The main brewing facility, which has undergone multiple expansions since opening in 2002, is located seven miles east of the Eccentric Café and B1 brewing facility in downtown Kalamazoo.

When it comes to touring the two facilities, at 335 E. Kalamazoo Ave. in Kalamazoo and 8938 Krum Ave. in Comstock Township, there aren’t many brewery tours out there that are better, according to USA Today.

The national publication released its “10 Best” list for brewery tours in the U.S. on Friday, March 8.

Referring to Bell’s as “one of the oldest craft breweries east of Colorado,” the publication highlighted that visitors can tour facilities in Comstock Township and Kalamazoo. At both stops, visitors can “learn more about the processes of brewing, fermentation and packaging,” the 10 Best report states.

Tours of the Comstock facility also include three complimentary samples.

Tour guides at the Comstock facility will walk visitors ages 21 and up through the brewery’s history and growth and answer questions on Bell’s brewing process. Tours are $8 and offered Thursdays through Saturdays. Free 45-minute tours of the downtown facility are also offered Saturdays and Sundays.

To book tours, or for more information, visit tours.bellsbeer.com .

While Bell’s was the only Michigan brewery to make the list, its sister brewery, New Belgium Brewing Co. also made the list at No. 8. The publication highlighted New Belgium’s original location in Fort Collins, Colorado, as well as its newer facility in Asheville, North Carolina.

Topping the list of best brewery tours in the U.S. was Tröegs Independent Brewing in Hershey, Pennsylvania, proving that Hershey visitors have a lot more to tour than just a chocolate factory.

Here’s the full top 10:

  • Tröegs Independent Brewing in Hershey, Pennsylvania
  • Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Co. in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin
  • Burial Beer Co. in Asheville, North Carolina
  • Dogfish Head Craft Brewery in Milton, Delaware
