The Maldives feature lush tropical landscapes, unparalleled white sand beaches, crystal-clear ocean waters and coral reefs that prompt extensive exploration. Tokyo is as fast-paced as cities come – it's the most populated city in the world, after all. Japan's capital features neon-lit skyscrapers and crowded streets that novice visitors may find dizzying, but its one-of-a-kind offerings can't be missed. Your urban itinerary should include tuk-tuk rides, tours of breathtaking temples like Wat Chedi Luang Varavihara and Wat Phra Singh, trips to night markets and a cooking class to try your hand at pad Thai. From the moment you touchdown at Singapore Changi Airport (a tourist destination in itself), Singapore shows off its futuristic embellishment. But this Southeast Asia jewel is also unique for its amalgamation of cultures. This fusion takes form in the city's colorful neighborhoods, eclectic culinary scene and overall modern atmosphere. After shopping on flashy Orchard Road and chowing down in cultural enclaves like Little India or Chinatown, head downtown to take in the towering skyscrapers from Merlion Park, the Singapore Flyer or the sky-high Gardens by the Bay.

The island nation of Sri Lanka, located off the southern tip of India, boasts rainforests, beaches and ruins without the tourist crowds of other popular Asian destinations. Despite its small footprint, Sri Lanka features 26 national parks, many of which are ideal for a safari excursion to encounter elephants, leopards and sloth bears. Meanwhile, ancient sites like Sigiriya, a 600-foot-high fortress, and the temples of Polonnaruwa hold their own appeal, and the palm-fringed golden beaches that line the shores are never too far away for those seeking a more laid-back vacation.

Hanoi is perfect for first-time Vietnam visitors, with tranquil lakes offsetting its fast-paced bustle and darting motorbikes. The country's capital offers plenty in the way of history, culture, shopping, dining and natural splendor. Start your day off with a Vietnamese coffee, then head to Hanoi's central Old Quarter for a stroll through the many narrow, colorful streets and a taste of mouthwatering street food. After that, check out one of the city's many temples, including the ancient Temple of Literature, which dates back to the 11th century, or head to the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum, a must-visit for history buffs.

Bali's natural beauty is so profound, travelers have been known to refer to the Indonesian destination as "heaven on Earth." Here, lush rainforests, picturesque mountains, sweeping valleys and scenic beaches all sit side by side. You'll also find a handful of serene temples in this Southeast Asia hot spot, including Uluwatu and Tanah Lot temples – both excellent places to catch a sunset. And no first-time trip to Bali would be complete without on a visit to Ubud, Bali's cultural capital and home of the region's famous rice terraces.

Whether you visit in spring (for cherry blossoms), summer (for climbing), autumn (for foliage) or winter (for nearby ski resorts), Japan's highest peak and imposing attraction is sure to capture your attention. Mount Fuji lies about 60 miles southwest of Tokyo, perfect for a daytrip from the city or a glimpse from a train ride, but this active volcano is also worthy of deeper exploration. Base yourself in the Fuji Five Lakes area to enjoy picture-perfect views at Arakurayama Sengen Park or from one of Lake Kawaguchiko's onsens (hot springs), and don't leave without sampling local hoto noodles.  

If you only have time to go to one beach in Thailand, make it Railay Beach, one of the world's most beautiful beaches . Located in the country's Krabi province, Railay Beach features glistening white sands and is surrounded by limestone rock formations (covered in leafy green vegetation) that jut out from the sea. If you're feeling adventurous, explore the area's natural wonders with a rock climbing excursion or go for a nighttime kayak trip to see bioluminescent plankton. As if this beach destination couldn't get more alluring, you're only able to reach it by boat. Daytrips from nearby Ao Nang are popular among travelers.

Siem Reap is the home of Angkor Wat, an ornate Buddhist temple built in the 12th century that is believed to be the largest religious monument in the world. The impressive landmark is just one of many must-sees within Cambodia's UNESCO World Heritage Site of Angkor. The complex also includes the equally detailed Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm Temple. Because of the immense popularity of Angkor (the site receives millions of visitors per year), you may want to travel during a shoulder month like March or November to avoid bumping elbows with fellow travelers.

Travel to the capital of Indian state Rajasthan to marvel at the "Pink City's" incredible architecture. Hawa Mahal, a pink sandstone palace that was modeled after Hindu god Krishna's crown, is Jaipur's biggest claim to fame. The property's astounding 953 honeycomb-patterned windows allowed the original ladies of the royal family to view the comings and goings of the Indian city without being seen. Other structures worth seeing are the Jaigarh Fort, Panna Meena ka Kund and Jantar Mantar, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that displays larger-than-life astronomical instruments.

Thailand's capital city is filled to the brim with eye-catching Hindu sites, nonstop nightlife and incredible Thai cuisine. Sacred sites like Wat Arun and Wat Pho are pockets of calm amidst Bangkok's skyscrapers. Shoppers can enjoy the Chatuchak Weekend Market, one of the world's largest street markets, or venture to one of the floating markets located outside the city. While in Bangkok, grab as much grub as possible from the street stalls, and at night, you won't want to miss the lofty views from one of the many rooftop bars.

This national park is so loved and respected, its image is featured on China's paper currency. Guilin and Lijiang River National Park is located in the Guangxi region in the southeastern part of China. The Lijiang River runs about 50 miles from Guilin to Yangshuo, passing stunning landscapes and towering green karsts (eroded limestone) along the way. The best way to take in the otherworldly scenery is by boat cruise, though you may want to splurge on a luxury option since the trip can take up to five hours. Tourists who prefer to travel on their own time can also hike or bike along the river.

Chiang Mai, Thailand

Many travelers prefer Thailand's pleasant northern capital over the hectic pace of life in Bangkok. Most of the tourist action happens within Chiang Mai's Old City, where orange-robed monks from the many temples smile as they pass.

Don't assume that Singapore is all about concrete shopping blocks! You'll find ample green space and an impressive system of elevated biking and walking trails that interconnect city parks.

Yes, Singapore costs far more than neighboring Malaysia or the rest of Southeast Asia, however, the city has a pleasant vibe, lively Indian and Chinese cultures, speaks good English, and is pleasant enough just to stroll. You could spend months living in Singapore and still discover hidden places and eateries the guidebooks have missed! Even the museums in Singapore will remain in memory forever.

Malaysian Borneo

Borneo in Southeast Asia is the third-largest island in the world, shared between Malaysia, Indonesia, and Brunei.

Don’t believe me? It’s one of the only places where, one minute, you can be strolling through an ancient temple, and the next you’re hitting up a Chanel store.

Aside from that, the eclectic cuisines alone should be a reason to visit – I’m talking about Sri Lankan curries, Korean fried chicken, and Chinese dumplings, to name just a few drool worthy dishes.

But, narrowing down where to travel in Asia can be daunting. With so much choice, how do you pick? Well, allow me to show you my favourite places in the continent, and you might just be able to choose your dream destination. Or not. 

Top 5 Places to Visit in Asia 

Luang prabang.

Let’s kick off my guide to the best Asian places to visit with the continent’s best destination in recent times: Luang Prabang. This beauty boasts a glowing reputation due to its fascinating natural features and numerous Buddhist temples.

If cultural immersion enhanced by tranquillity and picturesque sights is what you’re after, you don’t need to look any further. Beyond Luang Prabang’s aesthetically pleasing facade lies more to discover, and an exciting opportunity to learn more about the Lao culture. 

Speaking of which, the Lao culture centres around the simple pleasures of life: socialising, eating, drinking, and sleeping. Sounds like heaven, right? Get a taste of that with this highly recommended tour . 

The top thing to do in this Laos city is to visit the enchanting Buddhist temples and shrines — such as the Wat Xiengthong or Wat May Souvannaphoum temples.

Tokyo ranks as one of the top places to visit in Asia for many reasons. Aesthetically pleasing, its neon-lit skyscrapers and exquisite historic temples are a feast for the eyes. This is a city where futuristic technology meets millennia-old traditions. 

This giant metropolis boasts an astounding number of restaurants, museums, and markets to keep you entertained. The busy sakura tree-lined streets lead to shrines, temples, and towering wonders such as the Tokyo Skytree and Shibuya Crossing.

And once you’ve had enough of the concrete jungle, you can head to Hong Kong Park for a tranquil escape featuring tai chi gardens and charming water features. 

Brilliant Places in Asia to Visit

Beijing is a sprawling capital that oozes modern architecture but still respects its ancient sites, including the grand Forbidden City complex. Renowned for its lush gardens, parks, pristine temples, and palaces — your camera’s bound to work overtime. 

With a cheap and efficient transport system, safe and tourist-friendly atmosphere, visiting Beijing is a no-brainer. 

Beijing is one of the world’s oldest cities, meaning you won’t want to forgo visiting museums and historical landmarks. I suggest making your way to the Beijing Folklore Museum if you’re interested in traditional Chinese mythology. 

Asian countries are famous for their epic street food, and Beijing is no exception. Some must-try street food is the Beijing pancakes, steamed buns, fried dumplings, and, brace yourself: fried insects. 

Seoul is more than just a pretty face – it’s one of the best places in Asia to visit. Don’t believe me? It’s where old meets new, where fashion, delicious food, fascinating culture, advanced technology, and friendly citizens combine to create one hella cool destination. 

Seoul has notable landmarks, stunning skyscrapers, eclectic shopping malls, pristine royal palaces, and Buddhist temples, though it’s better known as the birthplace of K-pop and home to BTS, one of the largest K-pop bands in the world (you’re welcome, ARMY). 

One of the best things to do in Seoul is to indulge in the street food markets – Myeongdong is one of the best places to visit in the evening and I urge you to try the meat-filled Mandu and sweet delight that is Hotteok.

Located in one of the best Asian countries to visit, you’ll enjoy the high-tech subways and futuristic Dongdaemun Design Plaza if you’re a sci-fi fan. History buffs will also feel at home with places like the Gyeongbokgung Palace and the National Museum of Korea.  

Japan is one of the best countries to visit in Asia, so I’ve added another of its spectacular cities here: Osaka. It’s truly a special place thanks to the outgoing and extroverted nature of the locals. Having drinks and something to eat is another level of fun in Osaka.

One could argue that Osaka is Japan’s street food capital, and takoyaki and okonomiyaki are two snacks you must try. Visiting the Osaka Castle, Umeda Sky Building Floating Garden Observatory, or Shitennoji Temple might be touristy, but they’re fantastic. 

Meet the likes of Popeye and Shrek at Universal Studios Japan, or head over to Dotonburi, a buzzing square filled with countless shops and restaurants. 

Hanoi is hands down one of the best places to visit in Southeast Asia for its picturesque beauty and endless fun and entertainment. It’s Vietnam’s second-largest city, boasting rich culture and camera-worthy architecture. 

The Old Quarter is Hanoi’s beating heart, where the narrow streets lead you to enchanting temples and Xuân Market, a haven for foodies and shopaholics. With so many options, you cannot go wrong with these attractions: The Perfume Pagoda Buddhist Temple, Water Puppet Theatre, and Imperial Citadel of Thang Long. 

Some non-touristy activities and places to consider are Hanoi cooking classes, craft beer tasting, visiting Tay Ho (West Lake), and embarking on a countryside tour . 

Next up: Chiang Mai, the largest city in Thailand, located in the northern mountainous regions of the country. It’s home to hundreds of detailed, ancient Buddhist temples and two tribal villages. 

Apart from visiting the beautiful ancient temples like Wat Phra Singh and Wat Chedi Luang, you can step into the jungle and visit an elephant sanctuary with this guided tour (beware: seriously research your animal sanctuary excursions as many are exploitative). 

And if you want to scratch going to the highest point in Thailand off your bucket list, you can with a fantastic tour featuring stunning cascades and scenery. 

Top Tip: I suggest exploring the outskirts and indulging in local food for a more authentic experience. 

Kathmandu is Nepal’s capital city, nestled in a valley surrounded by the Himalayan Mountains. If that doesn’t sound intriguing enough, this cosmopolitan city’s mediaeval aesthetic, temples, shrines, and religious monuments might draw you in. 

From its many temples and monasteries to unearth, the Pashupatinath Temple and the Changu Narayan stands out due to the mesmerising religious artworks. As for things to do in Kathmandu, you have many choices.

You can head to the top of Swayambhu (or monkey temple) for breathtaking sweeping views over the city. Then you can explore Bhaktapur, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, filled with excellent sites to discover. 

Another top destination in Asia is Kandy. This city sits in the heart of Sri Lanka (one of my favourite places to visit), surrounded by majestic mountains. 

Kandy is also no stranger to a plethora of sacred Buddhist sites, including the iconic Temple of the Tooth (yes, the sacred tooth of Buddha). 

As the home of Buddha’s sacred tooth, it’s clear how Kandy became a top pilgrimage destination for many Buddhists. But the city is not only famous for its religious relics, but its biodiverse rainforests and extensive tea plantations are noteworthy too. 

Kandy is a hit among backpackers and those seeking out spiritual awakenings. The enchanting botanical gardens, and joyous festivities, such as the Esala Perahara, could warm up any traveller’s heart. 

Unique Things to See & Do in Asia: Hidden Gems That are Off the Beaten Track

Here is where we start to diverge from all the big cities and uncover the hidden gems of Asia. And my first pick is Railay Beach, one of the most beautiful places in Asia. Also known as Rai Leh, this small peninsula in Thailand is every avid beachgoer’s dream come true. 

Nestled between the city of Krabi and Ao Nang, your only access to this gem is via boat. The peninsula sports glimmering limestone cliffs jutting high above azure waters, allowing visitors to enjoy rock climbing and diving. 

It’s the perfect spot to relish a fiery sunset, catch a tan, or enjoy beach activities in a laid-back atmosphere. 

Perched on the uplands of Bali is a picturesque town that is every photographer’s dream. Ubud’s famous landscape has many admirers, but its traditional crafts and dances will also captivate your heart. 

Surrounded by thick rainforests and rice paddies, you can only imagine how mythical it looks when you stumble upon hidden temples and shrines dotted all over. One of the top things to do in this area is visit the Sacred Monkey Forest, which you can explore with this amazing private tour . 

The scenic Saraswati Hindu Temple is worth a visit, and you’ll get to snap some beautiful pictures of the lotus pond. And if you’re up for a tranquil walk through nature, the Campuhan Ridge Walk is the answer. 

The Raja Ampat islands are an Indonesian archipelago just northwest of West Papua. 

It might be a little tricky to get to these islands – you’ll need to fly from Jakarta or Makassar to Sorong – but its remote location offers visitors a sense of seclusion and peace. Not to mention it’s magical to look at. 

Known for its coral islands and crystal clear waters, you’ll want to dive right in (and the water is the perfect temperature too). Lazing on the beach might take up most of your time while there, but you can also try and fit in some fun activities. 

How does scuba diving, snorkelling, or a hike up Pianemo for splendid views sound? And when you’re tired from all the adventuring, a relaxing stroll through one of the quaint villages allows you to connect with locals.   

Palawan is a surreal and dreamy island in the western Philippines . 

It’s truly a tropical paradise boasting limestone cliffs with lush greenery and unspoiled white-sand beaches to enhance its beauty. Then there are the crystal-clear aquamarine waters that beckon you to take a paddle. 

The island has exotic wildlife, bright coral reefs, and quaint fishing villages to explore. If you were wondering about fun activities, look no further – there’s plenty on offer. 

You can dive in Barracuda Lake, go island hopping in Balabac, and swim in the Kayangan volcanic lake on Coron Island, to name a few. Rated as the best island in the Philippines by many, you have more than enough reason to see it up close. 

Paro is a picturesque valley town in Bhutan laden with many sacred sites and historical landmarks. Out of the many famous temples, the iconic Takhtsang Lakhang (also known as the Tiger’s Nest) takes first place because of its importance in Bhutanese culture. 

If you aim to avoid skyscrapers and shopping malls, you’ll find that Paro’s lush green landscapes and ancient architecture offer the perfect getaway. You can learn more about the caves in historical Tibet by visiting the Taktsang Monastery and the National Museum of Bhutan. 

Top Tip : Remember that Paro’s airport is the “most difficult commercial airport in the world”, with only one runway and planes passing by 5,500 m Himalayan mountain peaks.

Famous Landmarks in East Asia

In a country filled with more than 30,000 shrines, Fushimi-Inari Taishi is one of the most important landmarks to visit in all of Japan . 

Located in Kyoto’s southern outskirts, this incredible Shinto Shrine pays tribute to the God of Rice (Inari). It boasts more than 10,000 torii gates in all shapes and sizes, and interestingly, each gate symbolizes a wish to the deity. Since its establishment in 711 AD, thousands of worshippers have gathered here to make special wishes. 

Today, Fushimi-Inari is a popular photo spot and a highlight on any  Kyoto itinerary . While there are several points of interest within the complex, following the winding trails lined with 4,000 sacred red gates and cute fox statues up Inari Mountain is arguable the best thing to do here.  

Inara Mountain stands 233 meters above sea level and offers incredible views of the Kyoto basin. It can easily take up to 1-2 hours to reach the top, depending on your fitness level and photo stops. Although it’s not the hardest hike you’ll ever do, expect to break a sweat as there are many steps to climb.  While it’s easy to explore the historical site independently, this guided walking tour is the perfect unique experience.

Great Wall of China

One of the most famous landmarks in Asia is the Great Wall of China. Not only is it the longest wall in the world, but it also happens to be one of the 7 Wonders of the World. Most of the Great Wall was built and restored during the Ming Dynasty between the 1300s and 1600s, but the first construction dates back to 770 BC. 

Today, you can access several parts of the Great Wall. The most popular section is the one nearest to Beijing: Badaling. It is popular with Chinese tourists and is the most crowded section of the wall. If you want to venture out further and have less of a crowd,  Mutianyu  is a great option. It’s fully restored and far enough away that you can enjoy the beautiful scenery without the crowds. If you want to opt for a more adventurous experience, you can visit one of the wall’s wild sections. Jinshanling is half restored and half-wild, while Jiankou is completely wild and the most dangerous area. 

Whichever section you choose to walk, you’ll get to see one of the most famous landmarks in the world!

Admission:  You can purchase on the official Great Wall of China website for CNY   180. The ticket includes a round trip shuttle bus and cable car ride. With that said, joining a day tour would be a lot easier.

Gyeongbokgung Palace, South Korea

Seoul is home to countless incredible historical sites, but one that you should definitely not miss while exploring the city is Gyeongbokgung Palace. 

The palace was built more than 625 years ago in 1395, during the Joseon Dynasty. It is not only the first but also the largest of Seoul’s five spectacular palaces. 

During the Japanse occupation (1592-1598), a fire destroyed most of the premises, leaving only the Gyeonghoeru Pavilion and the pond around Hyangwonjeong Pavilion relatively untouched. It was not until 263 years later that the palace buildings were restored to all their glory. 

Today, Gyeongbokgung is the most well-preserved palace in the city. Within the palace grounds, you can admire the ornate two-story Geunjeongjeon (the main palace building), as well as several smaller halls, pavilions, and courtyards. Be sure to take a stroll through the immaculate gardens to see the palace buildings from all angles. If you visit at 10 am or 2 pm, in particular, watching the changing of the guards is encouraged. 

You’ll also find the National Palace Museum of Korea and the National Folk Museum on the grounds. Both of these museums offer great insights into Korean culture and history.

Ruins of St. Paul’s, Macau

Macau ‘s Historic Center is full of incredible ancient wonders that you’ll find nowhere else in the world. No wonder it’s also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

One of the finest historical landmarks in the city is the Ruins of St. Paul’s. Originally the Church of Mater Dei, built during 1604-1640, it was the most important religious site in the city. Along with the adjacent St. Paul’s College, which interestingly enough was the first western-style university in the Far East, they formed Macau’s “citadel.” 

Today, however, an intricate façade is the only remaining part of the 17th-century church and nearby college, after a massive fire destroyed both in 1835. The 5-tier façade stands 25.5 meters tall and features intricate sculpting motifs blending influences from Europe, China, and other parts of Asia. Some of the incredibly ornate carvings to keep an eye out for on the wall are chrysanthemums, the Virgin Mary, a Portuguese ship, the founding Jesuits saints, and Chinese lions, to name just a few. 

While it’s not obligatory, it’s worth visiting the Museum of Sacred Art and the Crypt to learn a little more about the Jesuits. Within the Crypt, you can also see the remains of Japanese and Vietnamese Christian martyrs.

Opening hours:  The façade is free to enjoy all day long, while the   Sacred Art Museum and Crypt are open between 9 am and 6 pm daily (except Tuesdays).

Taipei 101, Taiwan

Once the former tallest building in the world, Taipei 101 is Taiwan’s crown jewel towering above Taipei City at 508m.

Today, the bamboo-shaped tower is the 8 th tallest building globally and a strikingly futuristic architectural marvel. To get to the observation deck located on the 89 th floor, take the world’s 3 rd fastest high-speed elevator. The elevator travels at a staggering 1,008m per minute, taking only 37 seconds to reach the top!

Besides the incredible views on offer, it’s worth walking over to the huge 660-ton wind damper, which stabilizes the building during earthquakes and strong winds. 

All in all, Taipei 101 a huge must on any Taipei itinerary . It’s best to grab a  fast track entry ticket  in advance, though, as the lines are always long.

Tian Tan Buddha, Hong Kong

Tian Tan Buddha is located on Lantau Island, just on the outskirts of Hong Kong. It is the most iconic attraction on the island, and for very good reason. 

The majestic Buddha, which sits atop Mount Muk Yue, is the second-largest outdoor bronze sitting Buddha in the world and weighs a whopping 230 tonnes! It took more than 12 years to build the 34-m tall statue, and today it is an obligatory stop on any  Hong Kong itinerary . 

You can browse the elaborate three-story exhibition hall home to varied ancient Buddhist treasures and relics within the pedestal. But first, you’ll need to climb 268 steps to reach the top! After browsing the interior and getting a close-up look at the Buddha, take some time to enjoy the endless views over the island, the South China Sea, and Hong Kong in the distance.

Further afield, the Ngong Ping Village and Po Lin Monastery’s incense-filled halls are worth exploring too. 

The easiest way to get to the Tian Tan Buddha is by taking a fun 25-minute cable car ride from Tung Chung Terminal to Ngong Ping. The terminal is just outside Tung Chung MTR station. 

Admission:  Entrance to Lamma Island is free. However, expect to pay HK$ 235 for a round-trip cable car to get there.

Angkor Wat is located 5km from  Siem Reap  in Cambodia. It was recorded as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1992 and as recently as 2017 was rated as the No. 1 best landmark in the world on TripAdvisor. 

The massive Buddhist temple complex, which includes Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, and the Bayon Temple, was established nearly 900 years ago, making it one of Asia’s oldest landmarks. The grounds stretch over 400 square kilometers, and much of it is still being restored by UNESCO to safeguard this historically rich site and its surroundings. 

The best way to visit Angkor Wat is by organizing a tuk-tuk driver. You can find many online, like this one , or ask your hotel’s tour desk to arrange it for you. Upon arrival, various guides offering to take you through will approach you. Be sure to check their official government tour guide accreditation, which will usually be hanging around their neck on a lanyard. It’s also a good idea to ask a couple for prices and decide which you are happy to hire.

Better yet, join a private day tour with a knowledgable guide for a stress-free trip. A guide is highly recommended as they have the knowledge you just can’t read in a book.

One of the most incredible landmarks in Asia, the  ancient city of Bagan, Myanmar , is truly spectacular. Located in Upper Burma, the old Pagan empire’s center is home to the largest collection of Buddhist temples, pagodas, and stupas in the world. 

Thousands upon thousands of these structures dot the landscape, some towering to the sky, and some more than a thousand years old. This incredible sight has made Bagan the leading attraction of tourism in Myanmar.

Reaching Bagan is easiest by plane from Mandalay or Yangon, though the bus is the cheapest (and most exciting) option. 

The Bagan Archaeological Zone is enormous. It is easy for visitors to spend the full five days wandering the area. The ancient ruins are spread out and lacking in organization, so it is best to rent an electric scooter to move about easily.

Bagan is busiest from late-Autumn to Spring. Summer brings serious heat followed by the rainy season, though there is something special about exploring one of the most spectacular landmarks in Asia without the crowds. 

Admission:  25,000 Burmese kyats, a little less than USD 20. The ticket is good for five days.

Chocolate Hills, Philippines

These more than 1,000 symmetrical and dome-shaped mounds, which most people liken to Hershey’s Kisses, definitely look amazing but sadly inedible! They’re usually covered in green grass that turns brown during the dry season, hence the name. 

The Chocolate Hills is the Philippines’ 3 rd National Geological Monument and is dubbed as an Eighth Wonder of the World. They were formed due to thousands of years of weathering of marine limestone. However, a more fun legend of fighting giants throwing mud gets told more often. 

Visiting the Chocolate Hills is one of the  best things to do in Bohol,  Philippines, and there are even ATV’s you can ride to go around some of the hills. Alternatively, go on the zip bike for a more thrilling adventure. 

You can visit it by taking a bus from Tagbilaran City to Carmen or by joining the daily group tours to the Chocolate Hills.

Standing on top of the world, looking out to sea, is a familiar face. Cristo Rei de Dili is by far the biggest statue in the tiny nation of Timor-Leste. It’s not just a symbol of the nation’s favorite religion; it’s a reminder of Timor-Leste’s complicated history.

Cristo Rei  was a gift, celebrating 20 years of being part of Indonesia’s predominately Muslim nation. Although Jesus is the ultimate symbol of Christianity, the statue has several clues to remind Timor-Leste which country they are (were) in. The height of the figure (including and excluding the pedestal) represents Timor-Leste’s place in Indonesia.

Cristo Rei is a 1 – 2 hours one-way walking distance from Dili’s main waterfront area. It can get pretty hot, so this might be a good excuse to take one of those cute little buses. Once you are at the hill’s base, the path to the top is sealed, has lots of steps, and there are many smaller Christian structures on the way up. Halfway up, you will start to see how amazing the views are. On one side you can see the city of Dili, on the other side a beautiful beach.

Cristo Rei is a true hidden gem that deserves a spot on your Asian landmarks list!

Gardens by the Bay, Singapore

Gardens by the Bay is one of the top tourist attractions in Asia and a must-visit landmark in  Singapore . 

The premier horticultural wonderland showcases sprawling grounds and two massive glass domes that house an array of plant species, adding a whole new dimension to the way you’ll view plantlife. 

Within its main conservatories, you can wander through the world’s largest greenhouse (the Flower Dome) and explore the misty tropical rain forest (Cloud Forest) filled with everything from a massive waterfall to a sky walkway! Along the way, you’ll encounter popular floral gems, as well as some of the rarest plant species in the world.  

The Supertrees, which are also on the massive grounds, is another attraction not to miss. These giant alien-like structures are completely covered in plant life and stand up to 50 meters tall. Grand Palace, Thailand

One of the most important historical Thai landmarks is the Grand Palace in Bangkok – built in 1782 and the Royal Family’s former residence. This great patch of nature, located in the northeast of Vietnam , has evolved over 5 million years and showcases the most picturesque setting imaginable. 

The natural beauty and diversity of Hạ Long Bay are simply surreal. Little wonder it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and listed as one of the New Wonders of the World. 

Consequently, Hạ Long Bay boasts an incredibly diverse ecosystem, with thousands of species on land and underwater. While kayaking, scuba diving, and caving are just a few of the activities to enjoy, one of the best things to do here is simply to take a boat ride through this vast wonderland. Boating, beachcombing, island-hopping, snorkeling, and scuba diving are all popular pastimes in this tranquil part of the Philippines, where the brilliant blue waters, colorful coral reef, and dazzling array of marine life are so ubiquitous you run the risk of taking them for granted. But Kayangan Lake, which is accessed via a steep, slippery trail, is arguably Coron Bay’s most stunning landmark. 

Widely regarded as the cleanest lake in all of Asia, it’s a common stop on  Coron  island tours, so it tends to get crowded with people at midday. The stunning turquoise cascades of the Kuang Si Falls are around an hour from the historic old town of Luang Prabang in Laos. There are heaps of  things to do in Luang Prabang , and the falls are a popular day trip among locals and tourists alike.

There are three levels in Kuang Si Falls, with the top spilling almost 200 feet (61 meters). Each tier of the waterfall has a beautiful blue-green pool you can swim in. The water is refreshingly cool, which feels wonderful on warm and sticky Lao days. You can go any time of year, though the best time to visit is during the dry season from December to April.

Take a short trek through the jungle and stop by to visit the Tat Kuang Si Bear Rescue Center on your way to the falls. They rescue black bears (also called moon bears) whose bile is used for Chinese medicine. 

Get there by tuk-tuk or a moped if you’re feeling adventurous. Alternatively, join this terrific tour to enjoy the falls without worrying about the logistics. 

Kuang Si Falls is an incredible natural landmark of Asia and a fun day trip while visiting Luang Prabang!

One of the absolute highlights of the country is the city of  Shiraz  in the South of Iran. This city holds one of the world’s most photographed mosques – the kaleidoscope mosque or locally known as the Nasir al-Mulk Mosque.

The mosque dates back to the 19 th century or the Qajar Dynasty, when using pink floral tiles and colorful stained glass was popular. 

The most beautiful part of the mosque is the winter hall, located near the ticket booth. The light streams through the windows at midday, reflecting an unparalleled array of colors throughout the winter hall. If you want the winter hall to yourself, it’s best to get there at 08:30 am because it will be packed with tourists and worshippers alike by midday.

The dress code is very modest. As a woman, you will need to cover your knees, elbows, and head.

The mosque is known for its bright white marble exterior and interesting architectural features, including four minarets, 82 domes of various sizes, its large courtyard with a floral design, thousands of intricate columns, and surrounding blue-tiled reflective pools. The mosque’s inside is also beautiful – highlights include large crystal chandeliers and the world’s largest hand-knotted carpet in the main prayer hall.

During the month of Ramadan, the mosque has limited hours and is closed on Fridays. The best time to visit is early in the morning when there are fewer visitors and around sunset for beautiful lighting. 

Take note that the mosque has a strict dress code. All visitors are required to dress modestly, and women must wear long sleeves and a headscarf.

The beautiful Badshahi Mosque is definitely one of the  best spots in Lahore , Pakistan, and an incredible landmark of Asia. Constructed in 1671, this mosque is one of the most magnificent monuments from the Mughal Empire (1526-1857). In fact, its architecture is very typical of this era, with carved red sandstones decorating the entire building. There’s a huge courtyard right in front of the mosque, which can hold up to 100,000 worshippers, which is why this mosque is actually the second largest mosque in all of Pakistan. 

It’s not hard to see why the Badshahi Mosque is considered the crown jewel of Lahore. It is absolutely breathtaking from every angle, and you can walk inside the pavilions on either side of the mosque to get some really cool framing for your photos. One can easily spend hours admiring the details of the architecture there!

Badshahi Mosque is right on the outskirts of the Walled City of Lahore, and the easiest way to get there is to use Careem (the Pakistani version of Uber). Women are required to wear a headscarf when visiting.

The honeycombed structure of the gorgeous Hawa Mahal in Jaipur is one of the most famous historical sites in a city full of culture. 

Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh built Hawa Mahal in 1799 to let the ladies of the court view the market below without being seen by the public by looking through its windows. The Palace of Winds has 953 latticework windows, each with an intricately carved stone seat. The structure’s Venturi effect was an architectural marvel that kept the air cool in the palace by circulating it upwards. In the middle of the desert, where temperatures reach 45°C in the summers, this was an important aspect to consider. 

The view of the Hawa Mahal that people are familiar with is the back of the palace. Across the street, you’ll find several cafes above the shops. On the third floor of these shophouses is where you’ll find the best views of Hawa Mahal. You can easily get to Hawa Mahal by car, and all taxi drivers know where to take you. The Taj Mahal is a premier tourist attraction in India and the country’s most famous landmark. Interestingly, the Taj is actually a tomb and was commissioned by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan to honor his favorite wife, Mumtaz Mahal. 

Located just outside Agra, the Taj was built between 1631-1648 and wholly completed in 1653. It took an astonishing 22 years and more than 20,000 workers to construct. As a result, it features some of the most delicate and opulent motives on this list.

Today the ivory-white mausoleum is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and not surprisingly, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Besides the tomb, which features Indian, Islamic, and Persian designs, the grounds are also home to gorgeous gardens and a beautiful reflecting pool. 

Overall, a trip to India would be incomplete without visiting the magnificent Taj Mahal. Just remember to cover your head, knees, and shoulders when you enter the monument. While it’s easy to visit the Taj Mahal independently (grab a  fast track entry ticket here ), joining a  sunrise tour  is highly encouraged.

Southeast Asia is a group of diverse countries between the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, featuring indigenous cultures influenced by Indian, Chinese and Western culture. The region includes the most populous Muslim country in the world, very prominent Buddhist countries, and quite significant Christian, Hindu and Animist communities.

It has long been a favorite corner of the world for globe-tramping backpackers, known for its perfect beaches, tasty cuisine, low prices, and good air connections.

The countries of Southeast Asia represent a totally different culture for Western travelers. Instead of cathedrals, they’ll find temples. Instead of cold temperatures and snow in the winter, for the most part they’ll be bathed in a tropical climate. They may find simple accommodations in remote fishing villages but also luxurious five-star hotels in the bigger cities and on the more popular islands.

Southeast Asia will appeal to active, adventuresome travelers, who want to trek through steamy jungles, dive in some of the world’s best coral reefs, camp or go whitewater rafting on new rivers. But the region also offers the less active travelers something, who, after a day of visiting temples and other cultural sites, just want to relax in comfort in a luxury hotel. 29. Vientiane

Both the capital and largest city of Laos, Vientiane is an underrated place to visit with lots of different sides to it. Besides boasting beautiful Buddhist temples, it is known for its elegant French colonial-style architecture and vibrant street food scene.

Set right in the south of the land-locked country, its charming tree-lined streets lie along the northern bank of the Mekong River. In recent decades, the city has doubled in size as malls, hotels and office buildings have shot up everywhere. While the traffic is much more chaotic now, its peaceful temple gardens and riverfront promenade are still wonderful to explore.

Other than admiring the glimmering gold Pha That Luang – Laos’ national symbol and most important religious site – you can amble about the many museums and night markets. Wat Si Muang and Buddha Park also attract visitors with their amazing architecture and artworks.

28. Sihanoukville

As it is home to many of Cambodia’s best beaches , Sihanoukville is a great spot to relax and unwind after exploring Angkor Wat and Phnom Penh. Lying along the Gulf of Thailand, it has heaps of fun watersports to enjoy with idyllic islands also located nearby.

Also known as Kampong Saom, the popular seaside city was quiet until pretty recently when swanky Chinese resorts and casinos were erected everywhere. Although it’s lost a bit of its laid back charm, there are now tons of restaurants and bars to try out.

Plenty of pristine beaches still line its coast with Ream National Park also preserving lovely mangroves and colourful coral reefs. Aside from sunbathing, swimming and snorkelling, you can rent jet skis or take boat trips to the gorgeous Koh Rong and Koh Russei islands.

Nestled away amidst the remote mountains and rice terrace-filled valleys of northwestern Vietnam is the scenic town of Sapa . An increasingly popular tourist destination, it is famous for both its stunning landscapes and traditional hill tribe villages.

Overlooked by the rugged Ham Rong Mountain, the small settlement is surrounded by loads of spectacular nature. While some hike to Muong Hoa Valley for its picturesque rice paddies, others climb up the 3,141 meter-high Mount Fansipan – the tallest peak in Southeast Asia.

Many also come to learn about the isolated region’s unique cultural heritage and the ethnic minorities that live here. In addition to picking up some local handicrafts at its market, you can stay overnight at the quaint Cat Cat Village or trek to some of the other towns nearby.

26. Perhentian Islands

Just a short speed boat ride off the northeast coast of Peninsular Malaysia are the incredible Perhentian Islands . Appearing as if out of a travel brochure, the jungle-clad archipelago and all its breathtaking beaches are surrounded by shimmering, turquoise waters.

Meaning ‘stopping point’ in Malay, the cluster of coral-fringed islands are completely unspoiled with only the larger Perhentian Besar and Perhentian Kecil being inhabited. Protected as part of Pulau Redang National Marine Park, they have some stupendous snorkeling, scuba diving and sea-kayaking to enjoy.

After ogling at all its magnificent marine life, you can hike about its steamy jungle or lounge on picture-perfect beaches. Some epic rock formations also line their sparkling white sands with relaxing resorts and restaurants dotted here and there.

In stark contrast to the tranquil isles, the hectic, high-paced Hanoi threatens to overwhelm your senses. Once you get used to the constant traffic and hooting horns, Vietnam’s capital has much to love about it with millions visiting each year.

One of the oldest cities on Earth, it exhibits a fascinating mix of East and West as concrete communist blocks lie next to French colonial buildings and ancient Asian pagodas. In its Old Quarter, there are atmospheric markets and alleys to explore with the tiny cafes along Train Street always a big draw.

24. Vang Vieng

Often called the ‘Adventure Capital of Laos’, Vang Vieng is renowned for its remarkable karst formations and fast-flowing river. Popular with party-seeking backpackers, it has lots of captivating caves and bucolic countryside to see nearby.

Located a couple of hours’ drive north of Vientiane, the small town lies along the Nam Song River, overlooked by dramatic, soaring mountains. Besides hiking or rock climbing, many go tubing along the river, stopping at various bars along the way.

With countless cool caves, waterfalls and viewpoints found in the surrounding region, most people book tours to places like Tham Chang or the Tham Nam Water Cave. Buggies and kayaks are also available for rent while fun ziplines shoot you above its pretty landscapes.

The largest island in Thailand, Phuket has long been a top destination thanks to its beautiful beaches and bountiful dive sites. Connected to the mainland by a couple of short bridges, its many mountains and rainforests overlook the Andaman Sea.

Offering various exciting outdoor activities, the wealthy province’s pristine parks are great for hiking and motorbiking. As well as exploring the lush rainforest, you can snorkel, sail and scuba dive in the warm waters.

Many also come to pamper themselves at high-end spas, restaurants and hotels with the picturesque Patong Beach being known for lively street markets and loud nightlife scene. Phuket Town, the island’s capital, also has some centuries-old temples, shrines and Sino-Portuguese mansions to see.

22. Kuala Lumpur

One of the most multicultural cities in the world, Malaysia’s sprawling capital Kuala Lumpur hums with energy at any time of day. Most known for the iconic Petronas Twin Towers, it has everything from old-time temples and markets to modern malls and skyscrapers to explore.

21. Gili Islands

A lovely, laid back place to visit, gorgeous Gili Islands lie just off the northwest coast of Lombok in Indonesia. Fittingly meaning ‘small beautiful islands’, their wonderful white sands and warm, crystal-clear waters are easily reached by either ferry or fast speed boats.

Although they have long been a popular tourist destination, the three secluded isles are still quite undeveloped despite more resorts and restaurants popping up each year. While Gili Air and Gili Meno are very relaxed, Gili Trawangan is much livelier with plenty of bars and clubs hosting party nights.

All of them boast some breathtaking scenery and beaches with swimming, scuba diving and sightseeing cruises being their main activities. With no cars at all on the islands, their little cafes and beachside retreats make for a delightful getaway.

20. Phnom Penh

Once known as the ‘Paris of the East’ and ‘Pearl of Asia’, Cambodia’s capital Phnom Penh has slowly overcome the abuse it suffered under the violent Khmer Rouge regime. While it is still a bit rough and rundown in places, the growing metropolis certainly has a lot to offer.

As it acted as a hub for both the ancient Khmer Empire and French colonialists, fine temples and villas were erected around the city. Although many were damaged in the seventies, the wide boulevards and riverfront promenades for which it is famed still remain.

Aside from wandering about its attractive parks or enormous Phsar Thmei market, you can admire its Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda. Visitors can also learn more about its recent sad past at the Killing Fields or in its moving Genocide Museum.

19. Chiang Mai

The second-largest city in Thailand, Chiang Mai is located in the mountainous north, amidst scenic countryside. One of Southeast Asia’s must-visit destinations, it is known for not just its atmospheric temples and old town but its fun night markets and street food too.

Once the capital of the Lanna Kingdom, it was founded in the thirteenth century with some of the city walls and moat still intact today. These contain impressive temples like Wat Chedi Luang and Wat Phra Singh. You’ll also find bustling Night Bazaar and all kinds of enticing street food stands to try out nearby.

Outside of the city are natural wonders like Doi Inthanon National Park and Hang Dong Quarry to discover. Many also go trekking to meet remote hill tribes or bathe adorable baby elephants at some of the sanctuaries.

18. Inle Lake

Along with the ancient pagodas and temples of Bagan, Inle Lake has to be one of Myanmar’s most enchanting attractions. Tucked away amidst the rolling Shan Hills, its reflective waters are lined by charming monasteries and temples with floating villages, markets and gardens also bobbing about.

The second-largest lake in the country, it stretches 22 kilometres in length with lots of tribes living around it. Many motorboats and flat-bottomed skiffs take tourists out on the shallow lake so you can see the communities up close and learn more about their traditions.

As well as visiting stilt homes and fishermen’s villages, there are centuries-old stupas and pagodas to see too. While puttering about, you can bask in marvellous views of the lake and the mountains far off in the distance.

17. Palawan

With all the alluring beaches, immense limestone cliffs and azure waters, it is no wonder that Palawan is considered to be one of the prettiest parts of Southeast Asia. The westernmost province of the Philippines, it has around 1,780 mostly unspoiled islands and islets to explore.

Set between the Sulu and South China seas, the long, narrow archipelago stretches almost from Borneo to Mindanao. Characterized by craggy limestone cliffs and colourful lagoons, its white sand beaches and dive sites need to be seen to be believed.

Among the region’s many highlights are the irresistible karst landscapes of El Nido and the underground river at Puerto Princesa. Tubbataha Reefs National Park also attracts divers as do the coral reefs and shipwrecks off of Busuanga Island.

16. Taman Negara

Covering a massive part of Peninsular Malaysia are all the rivers, rainforests and mountains of Taman Negara . A must for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts, the country’s largest national park offers a myriad of unforgettable adventure activities.

Established in 1938/1939, it sprawls across three states with Asian elephants, leopards and Malayan tigers all inhabiting its wild confines. The vast park also protects some of the oldest deciduous rainforest in the world. Some estimates reckon it is over 130 million years old!

Amidst its endless mountains and jungle, you can explore caves, climb peaks and enjoy cool canopy walks. Many also shoot down its rapids and take nighttime safaris through the dark rainforest to see its nocturnal creatures. There are also the tiny aboriginal villages of Orang Asli to visit where you can learn more about traditional life in Taman Negara.

Well-preserved, Hoi An’s little canals and lantern-lit streets are hemmed in by hundreds of historic buildings. A mix of eras and styles, they perfectly reflect the former trading port’s past and all the different peoples and merchants that have lived here over the ages.

Lying along Vietnam’s central coastline, it flourished for centuries until the mouth of the Thu Bon River finally silted up. Its attractive Old Town is home to not just Chinese-style temples and shophouses but French colonial villas and ornate Vietnamese tube houses too. Another of its main sights is its quaint Japanese covered bridge that crosses one of the canals.

At night, everywhere looks even more magical as lovely lanterns light up its narrow, winding streets and riverside. Besides shopping for souvenirs at its market and trying some delicious street food, many take trips to the majestic My Son ruins nearby.

Formerly known as Rangoon, Myanmar’s largest city Yangon has much more to see than just its shimmering gold Shwedagon Pagoda. Other than the ancient Buddhist shrine, there are plenty of British colonial buildings, parks and religious sites to check out.

Despite being replaced at the capital by Naypyidaw in 2005, it still acts as both the country’s cultural and commercial center. As it exhibits a mix of British, Burmese, Chinese and Indian influences, the city has loads to offer in terms of its historic sights, food and nightlife.

The undoubted highlight, however, is of course the gigantic golden Shwedagon Paya which is perched atop a hill overlooking the city. At its sizeable complex, you can examine its shrines and stupas and bang the giant Maha Ganda Bell for good luck.

13. Boracay

One of the Philippines’ most popular destinations, Boracay boasts some of the best and most beautiful white sand beaches in the world. A tropical paradise, all its relaxing resorts, spas and seafood restaurants lie just an hour’s flight from Manila.

Located just off the northwest coast of Panay, the idyllic isle is lined by soft, powdery sands backed by gently swaying palms. Aside from swimming and splashing in its turquoise waters, you can enjoy everything from sailing and windsurfing to snorkeling, jet skiing and scuba diving.

Many holidaymakers also make the most of its many spas and massage stations that border the beach. In the evenings, there are tons of lively bars and restaurants which offer superb music sets and sunset views.

12. Mount Kinabalu

Rising dramatically above the rainforests and rivers of Borneo is the massive great Mount Kinabalu. The highest peak in the Malay Archipelago, it towers 4,095 meters in total with numerous hiking trails winding their way about its rugged slopes.

Considered sacred by the local Kadazan Dusun people, its wild reaches are now protected as part of the national park of the same name. One of the most biodiverse areas on Earth, it is home to around 6,000 plant species. Over 300 kinds of exotic birds also flit about its dense foliage.

Despite its soaring summit, the mountain is actually quite easy to hike if you are moderately fit. After taking in all its astounding views and nature, you can always go and see adorable orangutans at one of the nearby nature reserves.

11. Komodo National Park

If you’re after a sighting of the world’s largest lizard, then the incredible Komodo National Park is the place to head. Part of the Lesser Sunda Islands in Indonesia, it also preserves some spellbinding mountains, beaches and marine life.

Founded in 1980, the important biosphere reserve includes not just the large islands of Komodo, Rinca and Padar but dozens of smaller ones too. Here, you’ll find thousands of the remarkable creatures which can impressively grow up to three meters in length.

In addition to actually seeing the dragons, you can spot wild horses, water buffalo and other endangered species. Many also camp and kayak at its pristine white sand beaches with the park’s colourful coral reefs being amazing to snorkel and scuba dive above.

10. Singapore

Set off the southern end of the Malay Peninsula is the tiny city-state and island country of Singapore . Often called the ‘Switzerland of Asia’, it is a very prosperous and diverse place with its population speaking English, Mandarin, Malay and Tamil.

Since being established by the British in 1819 as a small trading colony, the city has grown considerably. Still home to one of the world’s busiest ports, its iconic skyline includes famed, futuristic landmarks like Marina Bay Sands Resort and the Gardens by the Bay supertrees.

Nearer the ground are cool districts like Chinatown and Orchard Road to amble around with Singapore known for its tasty food and terrific shopping. Although it is one of the world’s most technologically advanced cities, it also has lovely jungles and beaches to enjoy.

9. Ko Phi Phi

Even more picture-perfect still than Phuket is the nearby archipelago of Ko Phi Phi. Home to some of Thailand and Southeast Asia’s most attractive islands, its charming coves, cliffs and sandy beaches are surrounded by the sparkling Andaman Sea.

Part of Krabi Province , its enchanting isles number five in total with Ko Phi Phi Don being the largest and only one that is inhabited. Towered over by tall karst cliffs clad in greenery, their beaches are often featured on the front of travel catalogues. It’s easy to see why as all their white sands contrast so stunningly with the emerald waters around them.

One of the most famous is Maya Bay which was the setting of the hit 2000 film The Beach. As well as sunbathing and swimming, you can take boat trips about the islands and snorkel and scuba dive in their waters. Ko Phi Phi is also known for its lively nightlife and fire shows.

8. Luang Prabang

Rightfully renowned for its countless temples and shrines, Luang Prabang is nestled amidst gorgeous green hills in northern Laos. Meaning ‘Royal Buddha Image’, its historic old town is very atmospheric to wander around with several waterfalls also found nearby.

Situated at the spot where the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers meet, it acted as the country’s capital until 1975. At Wat Xieng Thong or the Temple of the Golden City, you can see where the Laotian kings of old were crowned. The nation’s most important monastery, it showcases some exquisite architecture, statues and murals.

In the Old Quarter, you can still see monks collecting alms in its laidback, stall-lined streets. Once you’ve explored its temples, make sure to take a trip to the fabulous Kuang Si Falls or carved Buddhas in the Pak Ou Caves.

7. Borobudur

The largest Buddhist temple in the world, the absolutely massive Borobudur monument lies in the center of Java, just northwest of Yogyakarta . Just one of Indonesia’s many must-visit sights , its collection of stupas look particularly spectacular at sunrise and sunset.

Dating to the ninth century, its enormous square platforms and circular terraces are made out of two million blocks of dark volcanic stone. Decorating the entire complex are elaborate relief panels and Buddha statues. These depict daily life, the concept of Karma and various fauna and flora from around the island.

Hidden for centuries under thick layers of ash and rainforest, it is very well-preserved with a couple of museums explaining more about the site. Every June, traditional Javanese dances are performed at Borobudur, highlighting its history and how it was constructed.

6. Ifugao Rice Terraces

Yet another picturesque place to visit in the Philippines are the beautiful Ifugao Rice Terraces in the northern part of Luzon . Tumbling their way down the sides of steep, sweeping valleys, their vivid green hues make for some phenomenal photos.

For thousands of years now, the Ifugao people have practiced rice farming this way, hidden away amidst the Cordilleras highlands. Carved into the side of the mountains, the irrigated paddies are an astounding feat of engineering. Some even label them the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World’.

Aside from visiting viewpoints and snapping photos of the remarkable rice terraces, you can trek around and stop by some traditional hill tribe villages. Many sell woodcarvings and handicrafts with plenty of families also offering homestays.

The highlight of most people’s time in Myanmar has to be watching the sunrise above all the stupas, temples and pagodas of Bagan. Rising above the trees and plains about them, its more than 2,200 spires make for an unforgettable sight.

Built between the ninth and thirteenth centuries, the immense archaeological site was once the capital of the powerful Pagan Kingdom. Actually described by Marco Polo himself as the ‘gilded city’, it contained over 13,000 monasteries and temples at its zenith.

As the complex is so large, you’re best off choosing a few specific places to visit. Among the most popular, impressive and important are Ananda Temple and Dhammayangyi Temple. A lot of people also take hot air balloon rides at dawn to see Bagan from above and enjoy the glint of the rising sun on its stupas.

One of the largest, liveliest cities on the planet, Thailand’s capital Bangkok is certainly not to be missed when in Southeast Asia. Famed for its fantastic street food and nightlife scene, it also has magnificent temples and palaces to check out.

Home to almost 11 million people, its seemingly endless urban sprawl surrounds the Chao Phraya River. Numerous canals also branch off it with many taking peaceful cruises to avoid its intense heat and heavy traffic.

Alongside all its towering skyscrapers, you’ll also find interesting historic sites like Wat Arun and the Grand Palace. Trawling its vibrant markets is loads of fun too as is sipping cocktails at one of the city’s many rooftop bars. With luxury spas and shopping also on offer, Bangkok has something for everyone to enjoy.

3. Ha Long Bay

Often listed among the world’s natural wonders, Ha Long Bay’s incredible karst landscapes really are special to explore. One of Vietnam’s top attractions , it lies right in the northeast of the country, not all too far from Hanoi.

Actually meaning ‘ Bay of Descending Dragons ’, its almost endless emerald waters are home to almost 2,000 islets. These mostly consist of craggy limestone outcrops, topped with lush green foliage or jungle. Some also have cool caves for you to enter and stunning swathes of sand to relax on.

On tranquil junk boat trips about the bay, you can visit its floating villages and kayak about its grottoes. Many also take Tai Chi, yoga and cooking classes aboard the ships while taking in the stupendous scenery all around.

Fittingly known as the ‘ Island of the Gods ’, Bali more than lives up to its name with all its romantic landscapes and revered religious sites. Lying right between both Java and Lombok, its rich culture, resplendent nature and warm hospitality make it the most visited of all the Indonesian islands.

Often described as a tropical paradise, its marvelous mountains and rice terraces give way to rugged cliffs and sandy beaches. Scattered about are thousands of ancient Hindu temples and fabulous valleys, paddies and waterfalls to hike or cycle to.

Other than spending time in Ubud , its cultural center and arts and crafts hub, you can enjoy the pounding nightlife and vivid sunsets at Seminyak. Many also attend yoga retreats or surf and party at Kuta Beach.

Covering an enormous area, Angkor in Cambodia contains the remains of several capitals of the ancient Khmer Empire. Fascinating to wander around, its hundreds of highly symbolic stone temples can be found just outside of Siem Reap .

Now believed to have been the largest pre-industrial city in the world, the important political and religious center was largely constructed between the ninth and fifteenth centuries. After its decline, the ruins of the temples were eventually reclaimed by the jungle.

While the iconic Angkor Wat may be its largest and most elaborate structure, there are also tons of other temples like the breathtaking Bayon and tree-covered Ta Prohm to see. All of them exhibit some amazing architecture and are decorated with detailed reliefs, statues and carvings. A place like no other, Angkor is a must-visit when in Southeast Asia.

Stay away from Sihanoukville, it is now a huge building site ruined by the Chinese building Cambodia’s version of Las Vegas.

Cambodia’s main attraction for you tourists are the Angkor Park temples in Siem Reap, amazing temples built in the 12th century.

I just visited an elephant sanctuary park near Chang mai in Thailand where we fed, washed and walked with rescued elephants . Never felt so emotionally rewarded … kindest gentlest giants . Say no to cruel elephant trecking where animals are abused both physically and mentally …

I agree with Marie. It would be worth searching to see if there is an eco-tourist elephant park where there is no riding. I went to one in Chiang mai and it was fantastic.

In 2007, a study of the site showed that there are 150 cavalry horses, 520 horses, 130 chariots, and 8,000 soldiers. The soldiers vary in height and this reflects their status. The tallest soldiers are the generals. Most of the statues are still buried in the pits close to Qin Shi Huang’s mausoleum. However, there are many other terracotta statues of a non-military nature in nearby pits. These include strongmen, musicians, acrobats, and various officials. There is now a museum over the pits that allows the public to view various parts of the Terracotta Army.

19. Ocean Park  Southern District, Hong Kong

Ocean Park Hong Kong is commonly referred to as simply Ocean Park. It is located in Nam Long Shan and Wong Chuck Hang in the Southern District of Hong Kong. It is an animal theme park, oceanarium, marine mammal park, and an amusement park. The park has been open since 1977. A huge expansion program that began in 2005 means that the park now boasts more than 80 attractions and rides, including four roller coasters and two water rides. It is the largest theme park in Asia and the 13th most visited theme park in the world as it attracts approximately 7.6 million visitors a year. Half of those who visit come from mainland China. This park covers a whopping 226 acres but is divided into two sections by a huge mountain in the middle. The two sections are The Summit and The Waterfront. To move between the two sections, guests must the 1.5-kilometer cable system.

18. Kenting National Park, Taiwan

This national park is located on the Hengchun Peninsula of Pingtung County in Taiwan. The park covers the Townships of Manzhou, Hengchun, and Checheng. It is the southernmost park on the island and is also Taiwan’s oldest national park as it was established in 1984. It is famous for its tropical climate and its focal point is a scenic mountain. The park also features an amazing beach. Kenting National Park is one of the major tourist destinations in Taiwan as it attracts approximately 5.84 million visitors each year. This location is also host to the Spring Scream rock-band festival that is held annually in March. One of the main reasons people visit the park is to get closer to nature. It is home to 15 species of mammals, 21 species of freshwater fish, 59 species of reptiles and amphibians, 310 species of birds, and 216 species of butterflies and insects.

17. Tanah Lot, Bali, Indonesia

Tanah Lot is a rock formation on the island of Bali in Indonesia and its name means ‘home in the sea’. Other than the rock formation itself, the main tourist attraction is the Hindu pilgrimage temple Pura Tanah Lot. The temple is said to have been created under the instruction of Dang Hyang Nirartha during the 16th-century. He fell in love with the rock formation during his travels and wanted a monument placed on the small island. The main deity of the temple is the god of the sea, Dewa Baruna or Bhatara Segara. It is one of seven temples located on the coast of Bali. Not only is this a massively popular spot for tourists, it is also a cultural icon of Indonesia. It is a beautiful spot to take photographs as a memento of your visit to the Indonesian islands.

16. Kinkaku-Ji, Kyoto, Japan

Kinkaku-Ji translates as the ‘Temple of the Golden Pavilion’. It is a Buddhist temple that is located in Kyoto in Japan. It is one of the most popular Japanese attractions as it attracts huge numbers of tourists each year. This structure is a designated National Special Landscape and National Special Historic Site. It is part of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto which is a UNESCO world heritage site. The site of the temple was once a villa that was owned by a statesman. It dates back to 1397 but all the buildings on the site except the pavilion were burned down during the Onin War which took place between 1467 and 1477. A monk burned down the pavilion in 1950 and a new structure was built in 1955.

15. Universal Studios Singapore, Singapore

Universal Studios Singapore is a theme park that forms one part of the Resorts World Sentosa which is on Sentosa Island. Construction of the park began in December 2006 and it was the second Universal Studios to open in Asia with the first being located in Japan. The park covers an area of 49 acres and features 21 rides, six of which are roller coasters. It has seven themed areas that are structured around a central lagoon. The park also features 30 restaurants and food carts. According to the owners, Universal Parks & Resorts, this will be the only theme park of its kind in Southeast Asia for at least the next 30 years.

14. Amer Fort, Jaipur, India

This is a fort located in the town of Amer in India and it is the principal attraction in the Jaipur region of the country. It covers four square kilometres and overlooks Maota Lake. The fort was originally built by the Meenas using marble and red sandstone. The fort includes Amer Palace which is located directly above the Hill of Eagles. The palace was home to the Rajput Maharajas and their families. There are four opulent levels in the palace and each of these levels has its own courtyard. On average, Amer Fort attracts 5,000 visitors per day. This attraction was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2013 as it is part of the Hill Forts of Rajasthan.

13. Gardens by the Bay, Singapore

Located in central Singapore is Gardens by the Bay. This is a nature park that covers 250 acres of reclaimed land. It was created as part of a governmental strategy to transform Singapore from a ‘Garden City’ into a city in a garden. It is the premier outdoor recreation attraction in Singapore. The nature park is divided into three sections; Bay Central Garden, Bay East Garden, and Bay South Garden. The park was opened in 2012 and by 2015 it had welcomed over 20 million visitors. Some of the features of the park are a special children’s garden, a cloud forest, a flower dome, and a supertree grove. The park also boasts an event space where a variety of events are hosted throughout the year.

12. Hong Kong Disneyland, Hong Kong

Hong Kong Disneyland is one of the two largest theme parks in Hong Kong and it is located at Penny’s Bay on Lantau Island. The theme park, which is a replica of the Disneyland Parks in Florida and California, was opened in 2005. It is owned by both the Government of Hong Kong and The Walt Disney Company. Since it was opened, this attraction has had 25 million visitors. The park is divided into seven themed areas; Main Street USA, Adventureland, Toy Story Land, Fantasyland, Mystic Point, Tomorrowland , and Grizzly Gulch. The park has the capacity to welcome 34,000 visitors each day. It is the 13th most visited theme park in the world and has plans to expand significantly over the next decade.

11. Grand Palace-, Bangkok, Thailand

The Grand Palace in Bangkok, Thailand, is one of the few palaces in the world that is partially open to the public as a museum while also remaining a working palace. The palace consists of a complex of building in the center of Bangkok. It has been the official residence of the Kings of Siam since 1782. Construction of the palace started in 1782 under the orders of King Phutthayotfa Chulalok. The monarchy was abolished in 1932 in Thailand but the palace still has royal offices inside that are important to governmental operations in this country. The palace consists of 35 structures in total that are fantastic examples of the unique architecture of Thailand. The palace and other buildings are set between four walls and stunning landscaped gardens and courtyards. The Grand Palace sits on the banks of the Chao Phraya River on Rattanakosin Island.

10. Petronas Towers, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Petronas Towers is the predominant tourist attraction of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. These are the tallest twin towers in the world and were constructed between 1994 and 1996. They were designed by renowned Argentine architect Cesar Pelli. The design has become a contemporary symbol of Kuala Lumpur. This attraction boasts many features that appeal to tourists. Below the towers is the KLCC Park. This boasts a fountain with an incorporated light show, a children’s playground, wading pools, and jogging and walking paths. Suria KLCC is a huge upmarket retail park that predominantly sells luxury goods and high-street labels. It also features an underwater aquarium, a science center, an art gallery, and a philharmonic theatre. Finally, there is a double decker skybridge that connects the two towers between the 41st and 42nd floors.

9. Borobudur, Java, Indonesia

Borobudur is the world’s largest Buddhist temple. This 9th-century Mahayana temple is located in Magelang in Central Java, Indonesia. It consists of nine stacked platforms; six of these are square and three are circular. These are topped by a central dome. The structure is highly decorated with adornments including 2,672 relief panels and 504 Buddha statues. Of these statues, 72 are located around the central dome and they are each seated in a perforated stupa. The Indonesian government undertook a large restoration program between 1975 and 1982 that was supported by UNESCO. Once the restoration was complete, the structure was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Borobudur is a popular site for pilgrimages and is often visited by Buddhists when the Indonesians celebrate Vesak. It is the most visited attraction in Indonesia.

8. Tokyo Skytree, Tokyo, Japan

Tokyo Skytree is the tallest structure in Japan and it is located in Sumida, Tokyo, dominating the skyline in the city. It is also the second tallest structure in the world after the Burj Khalifa. Although its predominant purpose is as a broadcasting tower, visitors head to this attraction to visit the observation tower where they can enjoy a spectacular bird’s eye view over Tokyo. They also visit to eat in the Tokyo Skytree Restaurant. Construction of the tower was completed on February 29, 2012, and was opened to the public on May 22 of the same year.

7. Kiyomizu-dera, Kyoto, Japan

Kiyomizu-dear is a temple in the city of Kyoto on Honshu island in Japan. The temple is just one part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site called the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto. Sakanoue no Tamuramaro founded the temple in 778 although some of the present buildings on the site were constructed in 1633. An astonishing fact is that there is not a single nail used to construct any of the buildings. Many visitors like to walk between the love stones that are positioned 18 meters apart at the Jishu Shrine. Lonely visitors try to walk between the stones with their eyes closed. It is believed that if they succeed, they will find love. This attraction is now particularly popular at festival times.

6. Petra, Jordan

This is a historical and archaeological city located in southern Jordan. It is also known as the ‘Rose City’ due to the color of the stone from which the buildings in the city are carved. It is estimated that the city was built in 312 BC and it was the former capital city of the Arab Nabataeans. Not only is this the most visited tourist attraction in Jordan, it is also a symbol of Jordan. Westerners were not aware of the existence of this city until it was discovered by an explorer called Johann Ludwig Burkhardt in 1812. According to UNESCO, Petra is one of the most important cultural heritages.

5. Forbidden City, Beijing, China

Most people are surprised to learn that the Forbidden City is not a city at all. In fact, it is a place complex located within central Beijing. The Forbidden City was built between 1406 and 1420 and consists of 980 buildings which are fine examples of Chinese palatial architecture. It was the seat of the Imperial Chinese Dragon Throne between the Ming Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty. This is a period that spans 1420 to 1912. It is now home to the Palace Museum which boasts an extensive collection of artwork and artefacts, particularly from the imperial collections of the Ming and Qing dynasties. It attracts 15 million visitors annually and was declared a World Heritage Site in 1987. UNESCO have also listed the Forbidden City as having the largest collection in the world of ancient wooden structures.

4. Burj Khalifa, Dubai, United Arab Emirates

Burj Khalifa is a megatall skyscraper in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. It was initially known as Burj Dubai before its inauguration and construction on this structure began in 2004. The final piece was placed on top of the structure in 2008 and it became the tallest structure in the world, measuring 2,772 feet in height. It dominates the skyline of Dubai. It is part of a mixed-use development that was designed to gain Dubai international recognition. This attraction has several features that interest tourist. To the exterior, it has the Dubai Fountain and Burj Khalifa Park. Inside, it has two observatory decks and a restaurant. The Other floors in the tower have commercial uses.

3. Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Located in Cambodia in Southeast Asia, Angkor Wat is a temple complex that holds the accolade of being the largest religious complex in the world. It stands on a site measuring 402 acres. Originally, the temple was constructed as a Hindu monument to honor the god Vishnu for the Khmer Empire. By the end of the 12th century, it had become a Buddhist temple. Khmer King Suryavarman ordered the construction of the temple in the early 12th-century for use as the state temple in the capital of the Khmer Empire. The temple is now a major symbol of Cambodia and is even shown on its national flag. This is the most popular tourist attraction in this country.

2. Great Wall of China, China

The purpose of the Great Wall of China was to protect the Chinese states and empires from attack and invasion. It runs across the historical northern borders of China and runs from Dandong in the east to Lop Lake in the west. It is a series of fortifications that were built using a range of materials, including stone, brick, wood, and earth. The wall has been added to over the centuries, but the earliest parts of the wall date back to the 7th-century BC. The most famous part of the wall is the section built between 200 and 206 BC by Qin Shi Huang who was the first Emperor of China. The majority of the remaining wall is from the Ming Dynasty between 1368 and 1644. The Great Wall of China is one of the most significant landmarks in China and is a huge attraction for tourists who visit the country. Whether the wall can be seen from space or not has been a matter of controversy for many years.

1. Taj Mahal, India

The Taj Mahal is probably the most iconic structure in Asia and is, therefore, one of the most popular tourist attractions. Tourists flock to have their photograph taken by this monument in India. This mausoleum stands on the south bank of the Yamuna River in the city of Agra. In 1632, the emperor Shah Jahan commissioned the building of this structure with the intention of housing the tomb of Mumtaz Mahal, his favorite wife who had passed away. The tomb is now the centerpiece to the grounds which cover 42 acres and are surrounded on three sides by crenelated walls. The complex also includes a mosque, formal gardens, and a guest house. Most of the construction was completed in 1643, but it was another ten years before it was completed as additional phases of the project were added on. It cost 32 million rupees to build, which is the equivalent now to $827 million. In 1983, the Taj Mahal was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is considered one of the finest examples of Mughal architecture anywhere in the world.
