Five-Star Reviews from TripAdvisor

No kidding, this is one of the BEST vacations, and most uniques experiences WE HAVE EVER HAD. Don’t miss the chance to do it. There were passengers from late thirties to mid-seventies aboard, and everyone enjoyed themselves.

The snorkeling was excellent including coral rocks and islands, and even a sunken freighter. One of the best traveling experiences we have every had. Would not hesitate to recommend to anyone looking for an exciting and satisfying sailing experience.

Sailing on a tall ship is like no other vacation. If you’ve ever wanted to do it, it doesn’t get any better than the Liberty Clipper. The crew, Captain Noah, Andrew, Ben, Rikka, Mitch, Jewel, Cam, Brian and Lincoln were excellent!

We loved seeing Boston this way. The sunset was beautiful and the crew was friendly. My only regret is that we didn’t do the longer cruise.

Picture this if you will - you have embarked in Barbados for a Caribbean cruise on a spacious cruise liner. You have a lovely cabin with its own balcony, but you decide to go up on deck for your sailaway party. Looking out across the harbour, drink in hand, you spot the most extraordinary sight.

Proudly leaving the harbour under full sail, a beautiful tall ship glides through the water, sails rippling in the breeze. The passengers on deck wave before turning back to their conversations. Are you stricken with cruise envy? If so, this is the article for you. A ship with sails is not for everyone, but if it ticks your boxes, you have a few options to choose from...

Windstar Cruises

Following a major refurbishment in November 2019, Windstar's flagship Wind Surf re-entered service with crisp new sails. Nearly half a football field's worth of sturdy Dacron sail-cloth measuring 21,570 square feet was hand-crafted in France by the team of maritime designers and artisans at Incidence Sails, premier designers in the offshore racing and Super Yacht sectors. Indeed the Wind Surf sail project was led by noted designers Stéphane Amiot and Maxime Paul, who sailed for France's Olympic sailing team in the 1992 Olympics.

Windstar Cruises - Wind Surf at sea

The computerised sails are self-furling and operate remotely from the Bridge, with fore and aft guidance from the ship's Nautical Officers. Wind Surf has achieved a top speed under sail power alone of an amazing 15.6 knots during a transatlantic ocean crossing. If cruising under sail appeals to you, a few options are available. Wind Surf (342 guests) summers in Europe, before crossing the Atlantic for a season in the Caribbean, with a focus on the southerly Leeward and Windward Islands. UK guests love the Barbados round-trips, a perfect speedy fly-cruise winter getaway, and great value for money too.

Meanwhile the smaller Wind Star (148 guests) weaves her magic in the Greek islands during the summer, the perfect area to explore under sail, and in the winter combines the iconic transit of the Panama Canal with the magical Pacific coast of Costa Rica. In 2024 her sister the Wind Spirit will be operating in the same regions after spending all of 2023 in the lovely South Pacific islands of French Polynesia.

The only French flagged cruise line, Ponant, have a fleet of sleek and chic motor yachts, and are currently undergoing a remarkable expansion. They are popular, but Ponant regulars remain supremely loyal to the first ship of the fleet, Le Ponant itself (the name means 'setting sun'). Having undergone a complete refit in 2021, when her already small guest numbers where reduced further from 64 to just 32, Le Ponant offers a truly private, welcoming and intimate environment. Sophisticated yet friendly, this ship gives you a little taste of France at sea, for al fresco cruising at its best.

Sea Cloud Cruises

Tall ships Sea Cloud and Sea Cloud II give an authentic taste of classic sailing traditions, and in 2021 they were joined by the newly built Sea Cloud Spirit , a fully rigged three-master. Teak decks, polished wood, sparkling brass and carefully stowed ropes will captivate any sailor. On these ships, sailing is not just for show - it is a true craft. When the orders ring out over the deck and the crew climb the masts to hoist the sails, every single manoeuvre marks a centuries-old ritual being brought to life. Combine that with great itineraries, genial fellow guests and the best in service, and you have a winner. The vessels are often chartered, so look out for opportunities in Europe and the Caribbean.

Star Clippers

The beautiful clipper ships of Star Clippers are unique vessels, charting a new age of sail, with a passionately loyal following of sail and cruise enthusiasts alike. Royal Clipper , Star Clipper and Star Flyer are modern ships, created for people who love their creature comforts alongside the traditions and romance of the legendary era of sailing ships. On these ships, you can hide away in the nets at the bow, or even (not for the faint-hearted) climb the mast (with safety harness provided) to one of the passenger lookout crow's nests.

Devonport’s Historic Tall Ship

A ship of significance to australia’s maritime heritage..

Enjoy a unique experience and embody the spirit of adventure on board the Julie Burgess as you sail out of the Mersey River and into the Bass Strait.

Feel the boat move to the forces of the sea, listen to the wind in the rigging and be refreshed by the sun and the bracing clean air.

Get close to nature and admire the scenic beauty of the North West Coast from the deck of a working wooden boat.

The Julie Burgess was originally built as a fishing ketch and was the brainchild of Harry Burgess, whose family had pioneered the crayfishing industry in the 1890s.

Captain Harry Burgess commissioned Launceston Shipbuilder Ned Jack to build the new fishing boat to replace the Ada Burgess which had been wrecked in 1934. Ned was unwilling to venture from the normal design but Harry finally convinced him, and the ketch named the Julie Burgess, after Harry’s wife, was launched in the Tamar River in 1936.

She was built from blue gum, Huon pine and other Tasmanian timbers and some of her original timbers were able to be used in her reconstruction.

She contained a ‘wet well’ amidships, where she could hold 4000 crayfish in seawater. With this amount of moveable cargo below deck, the extra width made her extremely stable in the Bass Strait conditions, which due to its average depth being only 50 meters, can produce a treacherous sailing environment.

Boats in green bay with forested banks

Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay is dotted with small floating villages and deserted sandy beaches.

Top 10 Sailing Cruises

Top 10 Sailing Cruises from National Geographic.

From the National Geographic book Journeys of a Lifetime

Nova Scotia and Labrador Tall Ships, Canada On voyages lasting up to a week, the exhilaration of the wind through the ship’s sails will put you in touch with eastern Canada’s seafaring heritage. On some ships you can sign on as a trainee crew member. Along the way, the ships dock in secluded harbors where you can kayak, pick wild blueberries, or hike. www.canadiansailingexpeditions.com

San Juan Islands, Washington Skip from island to island in the San Juan Archipelago off the coast of Washington State. Classic wooden vessels offer breathtaking views of unspoiled wilderness and gourmet meals that reflect the flavors of the Pacific Northwest. During the day, you can explore the protected waters surrounding the islands on guided kayak tours. www.starsailcruises.com

Pirate Cruise, Grand Cayman Island This Caribbean cruise, for children young and old, takes place in a replica 17th-century Spanish galleon—complete with firing cannons, planks to walk, and sword-fighting. www.jollyrogercayman.com

Star Clipper to French Polynesia Many people daydream about sailing between paradise islands. This trip, leaving from Tahiti, takes seven days and visits Huahine, Bora-Bora, Moorea, and other Polynesian islands. The boats have all the advantages of a modern cruise liner, combined with the heritage of a sailing ship. www.cruisematch.com.au

Junk Cruise, Andaman Sea, Thailand Rare seabirds, romantic beaches, and famous limestone stalactites are just some of the attractions of the Andaman Sea marine park and its 3,500 islands, which you can enjoy on a six-day cruise between Krabi and Phuket. This is not a luxury trip; you will have to share showers and toilets. www.discoverythailand.net

Ha Long Bay, Vietnam Ha Long Bay, or the Bay of the Descending Dragon, in northeastern Vietnam, is scattered with some 3,000 precipitous, strangely sculpted limestone islands and outcrops, and dotted with small floating villages and deserted sandy beaches. In spring and early summer the water is particularly calm and clear. This UNESCO World Heritage site is best explored by a cruise on a junk. www.footprintsvietnam.com

Seychelles Islands Charter a yacht and explore the unspoiled islands of the Seychelles with their clear waters and unpolluted coral reefs. You can hire a skipper, and a crew as well, to do the hard work for you, although intrepid, experienced sailors can take the boats out themselves. Usual itineraries around the islands last seven or eight days, depending on the wind. www.indianocean-adventure.com

Dhow Cruise, Straits of Hormuz, Oman The Musandam Peninsula at the northernmost tip of Oman juts into the Straits of Hormuz at the entrance to the Persian Gulf. Mountains rise straight up from the sea, creating inlets that resemble Norwegian fjords, dotted with villages that can be reached only by boat. Take a trip along this spectacular coast by dhow—a traditional narrow wooden boat—and you can also enjoy swimming and diving off the boat in waters that are rich in underwater life. www.msaoman.com

Lamu Island, Kenya The tropical island of Lamu lies off the coast of Kenya, just south of the equator. Its historic buildings reflect the island’s importance as a port used by African, Arab, and European traders and explorers. A range of dhow trips lets you explore the surrounding archipelago with its isolated villages and ancient ruins. Try a three-hour trip to Manda Island, or a Full Moon cruise with a lobster dinner included. On some fishing trips, you can cook and eat your catch. www.peponi-lamu.com

Évia Island Cruise, Greece Separated from the mainland by only 130 feet (40 meters) in places, Évia is Greece’s second-largest island. A rugged coastline of wide beaches and steep cliffs gives way to mountains dotted with villages and monasteries. Sailing along the coast of Évia in a caique (wooden fishing boat), you can enjoy the remote coves and beaches and the private island of Petali, as well as explore the main island itself. Travel with a group of six to eight friends; a leader and crew come with the boat hire. www.exodus.co.uk

A Norwegian evening on the fjord

Join in on a 3 hour cruise on board a traditional wooden sailing ship passing through a maze of green islands on the Oslo fjord! Sit back on board the boat and enjoy the scenery and beautiful islands, whilst savoring the fresh flavor of local shrimps.

Oslo, with its superb location, offers unique opportunities on and around its fjord which stretches almost into the city center. Discover the scenery on a traditional wooden boat, fully restored to its former glory.

Tour description

You’ll sail past numerous islands, including Hovedøya and the Dyna Lighthouse, through narrow inlets and into sheltered bays, so that you can capture the capital on camera from different angles.

The boat passes close to the peninsula of Bygdøy, housing many interesting museums as well as beaches such as Huk Bay. See the Maritime Museum with its veteran sailing ships moored outside, and impressive Fram Museum, housing the polar ship of the same name.

During your cruise, a local Norwegian buffet of shrimps will be offered, and in the bar, there is a wide range of both hot and cold drinks.

We have all marveled at the majestic sight of the Tall Ships with acres of white canvas straining in the wind.  But have you ever wondered what kind of tall ships they are, or what colorful history lies in their past?

Today ‘Tall Ships’ does not define a particular type of sailing vessel. The term was coined with the introduction of the tall ships races in the 20th century and encompasses all large traditionally rigged sailing ships. In the old days a ‘ship’ was a sailing vessel with three or more masts with square sails on the first three masts. A fully rigged ship has square sails on every mast. A Barque (or Bark) has three masts or more with square sails on the first two masts and fore-and-aft sails on the mizzen or aft mast. A Barquentine has square sails on the foremast only and fore-and-aft sails on the remaining masts.  A Brig is a two-masted ship with square sails on each mast, while a Brigantine is the same as a Brig, except it never carried the crossjack. Hermaphrodite brigs are also two-masted, square-rigged on the foremast and fore-and-aft rigged on the aftermost mast. Clippers and windjammers are other terms related to large sailing ships of the past.

There are many tall ships sailing the Caribbean today. Some arrive for the winter season then head back across the Atlantic or to the United States for the summer. Nearly all are available for sail training, charter or cruises. Some vessels are relatively new, while others have an interesting history. Here are some you may recognize.

The Sail Training Tall Ships Sail training is not only for youths but also adults; it not only teaches the novice crew the basics like sail handling, deck scrubbing, helming, lookout, maintenance and galley duty but also about personal development, working as a team, camaraderie and breaking down barriers. The sense of achievement and adventure from being at sea is remarkable and many people – young and old – leave having had a rewarding experience. Some ships even offer school education programs.

The Fredryck Chopin, a Polish sail training tall ship named to honor the Polish composer, was born out of “the desire to show the young generation the romantic side of life at sea and to make them feel like ancient mariners discovering new lands.” Classes afloat were introduced so young people could receive a school education whilst at the same time gaining the character building training of being at sea. Sadly, the ship lost both her masts in a storm off the Scilly Isles in 2010; luckily no one was hurt and both ship and crew were rescued and the ship fully repaired.

The three-masted barque tall ship Picton Castle offers deep water sail training and long distance education from two weeks to a year. The tall ship barque was refitted from a steel-hulled Cape Horner and is due to visit the Caribbean again in 2012.

Other tall ships that offer short-term sail training include the TS Pelican of London which will be visiting the Caribbean this winter. They offer programs for youths, gap year students and adults. Voyages range from day sails to three month transatlantic expeditions.

The tall ships Tenacious and the Lord Nelson , both from the British Jubilee Sailing Trust, are the only tall ships designed and built for people with physical disabilities. Tenacious, launched in 2001, claims to be the largest wooden-hulled tall ship of her type built since the end of the 19th century.

The Brigantine tall ship Tres Hombres is an interesting ship. Launched in 2007 from the original hull of a 1943 German minesweeper, and without an engine, she is not only a sail training ship but a working freighter delivering cargo in an environmentally friendly way.

The Cruise and Charter Tall Ships Brig Unicorn can be seen in Rodney Bay, St Lucia. Unicorn started life in Finland in 1946 and became one of the fleet in the film Pirates of the Caribbean.

The Dutch-flagged, three-masted clipper tall ship Stad Amsterdam, built in the late 1990s and available for business events, luxury cruises and adventure sailing, was inspired by the clipper The Amsterdam built in 1854.

The awesome Royal Clipper is built in the image of the steel-hulled, five-masted tall ship Preussen, the only merchant ship of her class ever built. The Preussen sank eight years after entering service when the British cross-channel steamer Brighton accidentally rammed her in 1910. Royal Clipper now retains the title of being the largest five-masted fully-rigged ship since her predecessor. The ship has 42 sails covering an area of 56000 sq ft; she has three swimming pools and is the ultimate in traditional luxury sailing. In the same clipper fleet are her four-masted sister ships, Star Flyer and Star Clipper.

Most interesting, though, is Sea Cloud. This four-masted barque was commissioned in 1931 as a luxury yacht by an American couple in Kiel, Germany. She was the largest private sailing yacht of her day. In 1942, the barque was enlisted into military service by the USA and had her masts and bowsprit removed. She was painted grey, fitted with guns and anti-submarine weapons and posted to the Azores and South Greenland as a weather ship known as IX-99. After the war she was sold and renamed many times until 1955 she came into the possession of the brutal head of the Dominican Republic, Hector Trujillo.Later, having changed hands again, she was left to sit in the tepid waters of Colon, Panama, for five years. Eventually she was bought by a group of German business men and restored back to her former glory. She now operates as a cruise ship for those with “a passion for luxury sailing.” Sea Cloud’s sister ship Sea Cloud II was launched in 2000; the large barque was built as a cruise ship but is sailed traditionally by hand.

Rosie and her husband Sim Hoggarth, both from the UK, have cruised the Caribbean and North America for the last seven years on Alianna their Corbin39.

Return to Athens for the Evening

The sailboat will return to Marina Zeas in the early evening, so enjoy a drink as you sail into the harbor, ready to enjoy the delights of Athens by night!

Where could I take a cruise on an old school wooden sailing ship? Preferably one where you can help hoist sails, etc. I'd want to do at least 1 night, maybe a few depending on price. I don't want a 2 hour tourist pirate cruise but something like a pirate ship.

Don't know the price and can't remember the company name but there is one that goes down through the Drake Passage to Antarctica. It leaves out of Ushuaia -- you work it as much as you want. It isn't luxury but looked like a lot of fun. We were on an small expedition ship (less than 100 passengers) in that area a couple years ago and had the opportunity to see and learn about it.

Sorry I don't have more info but google is your friend and hopefully this will give you a start.

Shmoo here

Liberty Windjammer Cruises

Island Windjammers

Star Clippers (true tall ships)

Thanks, I'll give those a look. I did a sunset tall ship tour in Boston but the ship was steel. Didn't get the vibe I was looking for.

I have done a cruise on the Lewis R French - https://schoonerfrench.com/

Is this what you want -

"The French is still operated much how she would have been during the age of sail. She has no inboard engine, relying on 3,000 square feet of sail to propel her. She has four lower sails and two topsails. If the wind dies, a push from our yawlboat "Greyhound" will help her along. All the sails are still raised and trimmed by hand, and the anchor is manually raised each morning using our windlass. There are no engines on deck or below to spoil the serenity. The French is 101 feet overall, 65 feet on deck, with 19 feet of beam. She draws 7.5 feet with a full keel. A proven vessel in all conditions, she is a nifty and quick sailor, having won the Great Schooner Race many times. The French has also participated in recent Tall Ships gatherings in Boston."

That sounds great. I'll look into it. Thanks!

True tall ships. squared rigged like the "pirate ships" you are after.

Wooden decks, ropes, ropes, and more ropes. Sailors (aided by winches ) hoist the sails and pax can join in. They pride themselves sailing as much as possible and motoring as little as possible.

Love standing out on deck, wind blowing, sails full, the sound of the sea ...

I hope you ha ve had the chanc e to tour the USS Constitution(Old Ironsides). Ameica's oldest war vessel. She is curently undergoing refit but tours are still possible. For someone with an interest in vesailing vessels., she is magnificent.

We saw it Summer 2015 but it was in dry dock. We did engrave our names on the copper they're reskinning the hull with though.

Happy you had the chance to see her. I was lucky to be present when, during our bi-centennial, she came, under her own sails from Boston to Marblehedhed harbor. Some argue Marblehead, MA is bierthplace of the U.S.Navy.... others argue it is Beverly, MA which is only about 30minunuittes (by car away) When Old Ironsides came intto view and we could see her siailss, what a sight that was. Beautiful beyond words.

Good post, about beautiful ships - but their steel hulls make it slightly off topic - which was wooden ships.

Yes. Hearing the creaking of the wood is one of the musts.

Thanks everyone for the input so far. From my research so far, some of these cruises are well inline with the cost of a traditional cruise. I figured they'd be extremely expensive.

Parade of Sail by Salty Crow

This fall gathering of the Maine Windjammers marks the last of the sailing season. We will be sailing along the coast and weaving our way around the many islands of Penobscot Bay for this week-long trip. Each night, we will be anchoring in different harbors along the coast. On one set night we will sail into the cove in Brooklin, Maine, home of the WoodenBoat School, store, and magazine . This fleet gathering includes refreshments from local sponsors, live music & dancing, and tours of the WoodenBoat grounds.

Nowhere else in the world can you see this many historic schooners under sail together. You won’t want to miss this historic occasion to celebrate boatbuilding and seamanship!

Key West Traditional Wooden Schooner Sail

Traditional Wooden Schooner Sail in Key West Caribbean

Schooner Sail your way around Key West - it's the ONLY way to go!

Board your custom-built, 87-foot wooden schooner for a nostalgic and memorable sail across the beautiful waters of the Keys on this Key West port tour .

The schooner was built using centuries-old techniques of shipbuilding. It certainly harkens back to the age of iron men and wooden ships.

As you step aboard her sturdy deck, you can tell there is something special about your boat: the glossy varnished wood, the sails (sheets) hanging from above, and the ropes and lines that tie it all together.

During your sailing experience, you can help raise the sails, take a turn at the wheel, or just stretch out and relax as you listen to the classic wooden hull whispering its way across the waters.

Set sail in 2024: Best cruise ships and cruise lines of the year revealed

10Best Editors

February 16, 2024 // By 10Best Editors

By 10Best Editors February 16, 2024

Cruising is among the most popular ways to see the world. Unpack once and take in the sights of the world’s rivers and seas from your floating hotel, all while enjoying top-notch entertainment, dining, and amenities. And with more than a dozen new vessels introduced each year, the sheer variety of cruises can be overwhelming.

To help narrow it down, we asked a panel of cruise industry experts to nominate their favorite cruise lines and ships across nine categories. Then, readers voted over a period of four weeks to decide the winners, and the results are in.

Amenities include two primary restaurants, a spa, swimming pool and hot tub, and a water sports platform. Plus, you'll find fresh fruit in your room each afternoon. To sail on the Wind Spirit, guests must be at least 8 years old, but the intimate nature of the ship is geared more towards adults.
