ipad is very slow

ā€œWhy is my iPad so slow?ā€ If your iPad is very slow, it’s a sure sign that something isn’t working the way it should. Unfortunately, there are a lot of “somethings” to consider. Your iPad’s performance issues may be caused by your battery, iOS version, storage, and a host of other factors.

But here’s the silver lining ā€“ once you know what caused the slowdown, fixing it is straightforward. In this article, we’ll break down all the possible reasons why your iPad is running slow as well as their exact solutions. Read on!

Table of Contents

Why is My iPad Running Slow?

As we briefly mentioned earlier, there are many possible reasons why your iPad is slow. It’s important to pinpoint the exact cause because each issue has a specific solution. To help you quickly figure out the problem and jump to the correct solution, we prepared a detailed menu:

How to Conduct iPad Performance Test

If you know your way around your device, you can also figure out why your iPad is running slow and freezing by monitoring your deviceā€™s different components.

In other words, you will want to check out your battery, memory, network, storage, and processor speed, among other things. While you can do it manually by seeking out their respective menus one by one, we suggest using the following apps from the App Store:

  • AnTuTu Benchmark. AnTuTu Benchmark is a popular and intelligent app that not only collects your iPadā€™s performance data, it analyzes it for you as well. It will score your deviceā€™s performance (against a benchmark), test your iPad storageā€™s reading and writing speed, measure your network speed, and more.
  • System Status Pro: hw monitor. System Status Pro provides in-depth information about your device. It lacks the ā€œscoring systemā€ of AnTuTu Benchmark, but you will know everything about your iPadā€™s battery, disk, network, CPU, and hardware information. It also provides resource graphs that can record your iPadā€™s memory consumption during up to 3 minutes of background activity. Hereā€™s the free version .
  • Battery Testing. Unlike the other 2 suggestions, the Battery Testing app gives you a ton of data about just your iPad battery. Battery Testing can monitor battery health and track its current raw data (like voltages and charge cycles). It can also monitor your deviceā€™s runtimes, which tracks how long your iPadā€™s battery lasts. This is a handy tool to monitor your batteryā€™s performance over time.

How to Speed Up a Slow iPad

In this section, we provide you with step-by-step instructions for different methods to fix a slow iPad. These methods solve specific problems that may have caused the reduced performance. Itā€™s important to use the correct method for your deviceā€™s issues.

Method 1: Force Quit Applications

Even when you exit your apps by returning to the home screen, they are still running to some extent in the background.

To force quit running apps, swipe up from the bottom of your screen and pause for a second until you see snapshots of all previously opened apps. This feature is called the App Switcher.

App Switcher feature on the iPad

You can swipe left and right to browse and swipe up to force quit the app.

Method 2: Reboot Your iPad

Some apps continue running in the background even if you force quit them via the App Switcher. Rebooting your iPad will shut down all running processes and clear out its memory.

To reboot your iPad:

Settings app on the iPad

Wait for your iPad screen to go completely black. Then, turn it back on by pressing and holding the power button until you see the Apple logo.

Method 3: Turn Off Battery Saving Mode

As we previously mentioned, Battery Saving Mode is a feature on the iPad that limits certain functions to conserve power. This includes reducing the iPadā€™s CPU clock speed, which saves power but itā€™s likely why your iPad is slowing down.

To turn off Battery Saving Mode:

Low Power Mode in iPad's battery settings

Method 4: Update Your Software

Updating your operating system and application software may help speed up your iPad. If the problem is affecting general iPad performance, start by searching for iPadOS updates. Go to Settings > GeneralĀ  > Software Update and follow the on-screen instructions if an update is available.

If the problem seems to affect a specific app or only occurs when that app is running, you should update to the appā€™s latest version. Go to the App Store and see if there are updates for the app. If an update is available, install it and try using the app again.

If you are still experiencing poor performance after updating your software, wait for about 30 minutes and reboot the iPad. New updates may take a while to fully integrate with the system and may be adjusting to the power demands of the new features. A reboot allows a fresh restart.

Method 5: Check Your Internet Connection

Your iPad may be running slowly due to an unstable or poor Internet connection. This can be caused by a wide variety of problems that you need to address methodically to fix the issue. Try the following steps to verify you have a suitable Internet connection.

  • Make sure your router is properly located in range of your iPad and that all cables are connected securely.
  • Use a third-party tool such as SpeedTest to test your current network speed.
  • Manually reconnect your iPad to the network. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi to see your network connection. If alternate networks are available, you can try connecting to one of them and see if performance is better. You can also use the Forget This Network feature to remove a network and its configuration details from the iPad. This may clear up authentication issues that are slowing down your deviceā€™s performance.

Method 6: Clean Your iPadā€™s Caches

Cache data accumulates over time and may even get corrupted. Both issues may impact your iPadā€™s performance; a full storage will have no room for new cache files, while corrupted cache data can cause your iPad to run slowly or even crash.

Fortunately, we can manually clear cache data ourselves. Below, weā€™ll show you how to clear your browser and app cache data.

To clear Safariā€™s browser cache on your iPad:

iPad Safari history settings

To clear Google Chromeā€™s browser cache on your iPad:

Google Chrome app on iPad

To clear app caches on your iPad:

Step 1. Open the Settings app.

Step 2. Tap on the app you want to clean.

Step 3. Tap Clear Cache .

Method 7: Remove Big Files

A full storage can no longer accommodate new cache files. We need to make room for the cache data in order to improve device performance. In other words, we need to free more storage and clean up the iPad to run faster.

Consider deleting apps, photos, videos, and other data you donā€™t need anymore. You can also use iCloud to save high-resolution copies of your photos online and keep smaller copies on your iPad.

Method 8: Adjust Your iPad Settings

Your iPad is a very customizable device with many settings that can be tweaked to improve a slow-performing device. Check the following settings

Low Power Mode

iPads (especially the newer ones) are pretty good at self-maintenance. However, they are still vulnerable to performance issues that can be caused by many different factors. Fortunately, almost all scenarios where the iPad is loading slow have exact solutions that we can do ourselves.

To prevent performance issues in the future, keep your iPadā€™s iOS updated, take care of your battery , maintain your storage, and use a strong internet connection.

If you buy through affiliate links, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Full Disclosure Here…

Appleā€™s Safari is known to be amongst the best browsers due to its fast performance and simple interface. However, it can still run into performance issues that can be frustrating. There could be a multitude of reasons for Safari running slower than usual. So, we tried a few simple methods that might be able to fix the issue and get back on track.

Some possible reasons for this issue are the build-up of cache or cookies, outdated browsers, extensions, or plug-ins that are not being used. Once you are able to identify the issue, you can simply follow the steps to remove cache and extensions or even update the browser.

Well, let us look at everything we need to know in detail and figure out all the methods that might work best for you.

Why Is Safari So Slow?

1. build-up cache and cookies, 2. software update, 3. extensions and plug-ins issue, 4. large number of open tabs, 5. network issues, 6. limited storage space, 7. contact apple support, frequently asked questions.

Your Safari browser is running slow because of the build-up of cache and cookies. Or it could even be because you are using an outdated version of the browser, and it needs an immediate update. Furthermore, this could be simply because too many tabs are open on the system, and thus it is eventually slowing down the entire software.

As we said, this could be because of any underlying cause. You can fix all of it by simply restarting the system or the browser itself. Or you might need to try other methods that can take a few more steps. Here are some fixes you can try that worked for us too.

7 Reasons Why Safari is Running Slow + Fixes

We all know the basic idea behind using cache and cookies. They are used by websites or the system to speed up your browsing experience. However, the more you are active on the internet, the more these files are piled up over time.

Hence, there isnā€™t enough space for the browser or the system to store any more of these small files. So, we need to eliminate these to fix your Safari issues. Here is how you can do it.

  • Open Safari Browser.
  • Now, click on History on the top taskbar and choose Clear History in the drop-down menu.

Build-Up Cache and Cookies

  • Select the time duration besides the Clear option, then click on Clear History.

Clear History

The above steps will clear the history and the cookies from the site. Now close Safari and start again to check if the issue is fixed.

Here is another way you can empty caches on the Safari browser.

  • Open the Safari browser and click on Develop on the top taskbar.

Safari browser

  • Now, from the drop-down menu option, select Empty Caches or press Option + Command + E.

Empty Caches

Another method you can try is updating the Safari browser by updating your macOS . Since Safari is an in-built software developed by the tech giant itself, they often release updates to fix such errors.

Here is how you can check for updates and update your Safari app when needed.

  • Go to the Apple menu and then choose System Settings .
  • Then click on Software Update.
  • Wait a few seconds for the system to check for an available update. Install the update if available.

Software Update

Once you update your macOS, your Safari app will also be updated. You can then wait for the system to restart and check if the app works fine.

Some extensions or plug-ins might be outdated and cause your Safari to slow down and cause performance issues. Hence, you can update or uninstall these extensions from your system.

You can follow the steps below to check which extensions you are currently using and then uninstall the ones you are not using anymore.

  • Open Safari browser.
  • Go to the Safari option on the taskbar and choose Settings.

Extensions and Plug-ins Issue

  • Now, click on the Extensions option on the menu bar.
  • Next, choose the Extension you want to remove and select Uninstall.

Unistall Extension

You can keep doing this for all the extensions you do not want to keep and uninstall them from your browser. This will eventually speed up the performance of Safari.

Have you been currently using too many tabs on your Safari browser? Well, this could be one of the biggest reasons your Safari browser has slowed down or even glitched overall. The best way to go from here is simply close some tabs and give your browser a breather.

If that does not work, you might have to close the browser and restart the system. For this, simply right-click the Safari icon in the dock below. Press Quit and the browser will close with all its tabs.

Before trying out any other solution, it is best to check your internet connection and ensure it works properly. Your network issues might be causing the website and other downloads to slow down.

Ensure your router is properly connected or your MacBook receives a proper internet connection. For this, you can check your internet speed through multiple sites on the web. If everything looks fine, you can try the other methods listed below.

You might need to clear some storage space on your Mac . Some apps fail to function because your system does not have enough space to run the in-built apps such as Safari.

For this, you can check the current status of your storage on Mac and determine how you can make space for the system apps to run smoothly.

  • Go to the Apple menu and choose System Settings .
  • Scroll down to open General and then choose Storage.

Limited Storage Space

Here, you can check all the sections that have taken up the maximum space and then delete some of the files.

The last resort here is to contact Apple support for some guidance. Although you can also check for some hardware issues, it is best to speak to an executive from Apple support.

Simply visit the official Apple website and connect to an online executive where you can present your issues and try their suggested fixes.

Check our article on How to Add More Storage to MacBook’s?

You can start by updating the macOS, which will, in turn, update the Safari app as well. Moreever, you can also clear caches and cookies to help bring the safari to speed.

Safari is known to be faster on Apple devices such as your MacBook. At the same time, Google Chrome performs the best on all devices, including your smartphones. However, it depends largely on the operating system and the device’s hardware.

The fastest browser for Apple is indeed Safari. It is built for macOS and iOS devices, providing an optimized browsing experience.

The fixes to a slow-running Safari are simple. Clearing your cache, updating the app or your macOS, closing unwanted tabs, and clearing storage space are all excellent ways of ensuring your Apple search engine runs perfectly.

If these do not work, you can check your internet connection and close the tabs you are working on. The more tabs you have opened, the slower it will work. Similarly, there are other methods too that are tried and tested to fix Safari issues, and you can try them as well before contacting Apple Support.

How to Speed Up iPad to Make It Perform as Good as New

Arnold Zafra

One of the worst experiences that you might have while using your iPad is it starting to slow down when performing tasks. Suddenly you feel like you’re using the older generation of iPad when in fact you have the latest model. So, if you’re asking how to speed up your iPad, the troubleshooting tips below can help your iPad work faster again.

Update to the Latest Version of iPadOS

The first thing you need to do to possibly speed up your iPad is, of course, to make sure that it’s running the latest version of iPadOS. Check if your iPad is on the latest iPadOS by simply going to Settings > General > About.

If your iPad is running an older version of iPadOS, go to Settings > General > Software Update, and an update to the latest version should be available. Simply download and install it on your iPad. Typically, iPads running on the latest operating system version will perform better than those running on older versions of iPadOS.

Restart Your iPad After Closing All Running Apps

Aside from ensuring that your iPad is running the latest OS, you can also try restarting your device to speed it up. Before you restart your iPad, you may want to close all apps that are currently running. While there are some people who say that this won’t speed up the iPad, there’s no harm in trying. Anyway, it will only take a few minutes of your time.

The process of closing apps depends on what iPad you have. If it has a Home Button, double-click on it to show all running apps. To close the apps, swipe up on them one by one. On the other hand, if your iPad does not have a Home Button, you should instead swipe from the bottom of your iPad to show your open apps. Then swipe up on them one by one to close.

Uninstall Apps That You No Longer Use

If you have populated your iPad’s App Library, there’s a good chance that you no longer use some of them. Take some time to check and see if you can delete those that you seldom or don’t use anymore. Removing these apps from your iPad frees up some space and that can improve your device’s speed.

To refresh your memory, you can delete apps by simply pressing on them until they start to jiggle. Next, tap the minus sign on the left corner, then tap Delete App . Tap Delete once more and the app will be removed from your device.

Disable Background App Refresh on Your iPad

Background App Refresh keeps your essential apps on your iPad running even when you are currently using a different app. If you enable this setting, apps can continue to run in the background after you’ve moved on to using a different app.

There’s no harm in doing this, but the processes could consume a considerable amount of resources on your iPad. This could, in turn, cause slower performance.

In short, disable Background App Refresh if you can. To do this simply go to Settings > General > Background App Refresh and toggle it off.

ipad safari running slow

Turn Off Notifications to Speed Up Your iPad

Similar to Background App Refresh, enabling notifications on your iPad also use its resources and could affect the tablet’s speed. So, you might consider disabling notifications for all or some of your apps.

Simply go to Settings > Notifications , and then select which app you don’t want to receive notifications from. It’s also worth noting that turning off Notifications can make your iPad charge faster.

ipad safari running slow

Clear Cookies and Cache in Safari

If you’re using Safari more than any other third-party browsers, chances are it has saved quite a bit of data from the websites you’ve visited. That could use up resources on your iPad and make it run slowly.

To clear this data, including cookies and cached files, simply go to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data , then tap Clear .

ipad safari running slow

Disable Spotlight Search

Honestly speaking, I never thought that this one feature of iPadOS could affect the iPad’s speed much. It makes sense, though, since Spotlight Search continuously indexes your iPad’s apps and files to be allow it to display the most accurate search results.

You can check out what Spotlight Search indexes on your iPad by going to Settings > General > Siri & Search. From there, you can make some adjustments as to what iPadOS indexes.

Free Up Storage to Speed Up Your iPad

To work efficiently and up to its usual speed, your iPad requires adequate storage space. So, as much as possible, make sure you do regular spring cleaning on apps and content that you can afford to let go. I personally use a handy cleaning tool like Intego Washing Machine because it erases unnecessary files, junk files, etc with ease, improving the performance of your iPad within a couple of minutes.

To check the remaining storage, simply go to Settings > General > iPad Storage.

Disable Automatic App Updates

Finally, similar to Notifications, app updates also run in the background and could take up enough of your iPad’s resources to slow it down.

Consider turning this feature off. To do so, simply go to Settings > App Store , then toggle off Updates.

ipad safari running slow

If you do disable automatic app updates, though, you need to make it a habit to manually install them. Quite often, app updates will offer you almost as much performance improvement as OS updates.

Final Words: Consider Getting More iCloud Storage to Reduce Burden on your iPad

In case you failed to notice, the amount of storage remaining on your iPad can affect its speed and performance. So, if you’re downloading movies or music, these media files will use up storage and resources on your device.

It may be worth saving them in iCloud instead to remove some of the burden from your iPad.

After doing all the tips above, if you still feel like your iPad is performing too slowly, maybe it’s time to consider upgrading to a new model with better specs. Or if you’re currently using the regular iPad, you might want to consider upgrading to the iPad Pro.

If your iPhone or iPad is running slow

If your iOS or iPadOS device freezes or has performance issues, try these tips.

Check your network conditions

Many apps require an internet connection for their content and other functionality. If the network you're connected to is congested – for example, at an event with many people using the same network – apps may take a while to open or display their content. Your device can also seem slow as it repeatedly reconnects to new mobile phone masts when you're in a moving vehicle.

Even if your device indicates a strong signal, you might need to wait, try again in a different location or use available Wi-Fi. If you continue to experience issues with mobile data speed, availability,or performance in multiple locations, contact your network provider.

Find out more about mobile data >

Close an app that's not responding

If an app stops responding or freezes, you might need to force it to close and then open it again.*

From the Home Screen of iPhone X or later or iPad, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and pause slightly in the middle of the screen. On iPhone 8 or earlier, double-click the Home button to show your most recently used apps.

Swipe right or left to find the app that you want to close.

Swipe up on the app's preview to close the app.

Find out what to do if an app stops responding repeatedly >

Make sure you have enough storage

If your device is low on storage, iOS or iPadOS will free up space automatically while installing an app, updating iOS or iPadOS, downloading music, recording videos and more. iOS or iPadOS only removes items that can be downloaded again or that aren't needed any more.

You can check your device's storage in Settings > General > [Device] Storage. For best performance, try to maintain at least 1 GB of free space. If your available storage is consistently less than 1 GB, your device may slow down as iOS or iPadOS repeatedly makes room for more content.

If you need to free up some space, follow these steps to turn on the storage-saving recommendations built in to iOS or iPadOS:

Go to Settings > General > [Device] Storage and read the recommendations that iOS or iPadOS may provide.

Tap Enable to turn on a recommendation, or tap a recommendation title to review the content that you can delete.

If you can't see any recommendations – or if you need to free up even more space – you can review the apps on your device. They're listed on the same [Device] Storage screen along with the amount of space that they use.

Tap an app, then choose from the options:

Offload the app, which frees up storage used by the app, but keeps its documents and data.

Delete the app, which removes the app and its related data.

Depending on the app, you might be able to delete some of its documents and data.

Find out more ways to optimise your storage >

Turn off Low Power Mode

Low Power Mode is an iPhone and iPad feature that extends battery life by reducing the amount of power that your device uses. In Low Power Mode, some features are turned off and some tasks may take longer to complete. If your battery icon is yellow, Low Power Mode is turned on.

Consider leaving Low Power Mode off if you need your iPhone or iPad to function without low-power restrictions. You can turn Low Power Mode on or off in Settings > Battery.

Get more information about Low Power Mode >

Keep your device from getting too hot or cold

iOS or iPadOS adjusts your device's performance if it's become too warm due to external conditions, such as being left in a hot car or used for an extended time in direct sunlight. Move your device to a cooler location and let its temperature adjust.

Very cold temperatures can also slow your device. If your device runs slowly after being exposed to cold, move it to a warmer location.

Find out more about acceptable operating temperatures >

Look at your battery health

All rechargeable batteries are consumable components that become less effective as they chemically age. Over time, the rechargeable batteries in all iPhone and iPad models will diminish in their capacity and peak performance and will eventually need to be replaced. iOS can show battery health and recommend if an iPhone battery needs to be replaced. Go to Settings > Battery and tap Battery Health. Battery Health is only available on iPhone.

  • Frequently Asked Questions

Is your iPad running slowly, or does it bog down after a few hours? While reduced performance is more likely to happen with older iPad models, even the newest iPad can slow down. We'll explain why, plus what to do to get back on the fast track.

Use these fixes on iPad models with iPadOS 14, iPadOS 13, iOS 12 , and iOS 11. Many of these tips also apply to earlier versions of the operating system.

What Causes Slow iPad Performance?

There are many reasons why an iPad may run slowly. An app installed on the device may have issues. Your internet connection may be slow. The iPad may be running an older operating system or have the Background App Refresh feature enabled. Your device's storage space may be full.

If you notice slow performance only when you're using your iPad to surf the web, Safari for iPad may be struggling to deal with ads. The good news is that most of these problems are easy to fix.

The solutions that follow can help get your iPad in racing form:

Restart the iPad . Whenever you encounter a problem with a device, an excellent first step is to restart that device, and the iPad is no exception. Restarting the iPad flushes everything from temporary memory and gives the operating system a clean start.

Restarting the iPad won't permanently delete any of your data.

Quit the current iPad app . One reason an iPad may slow down is a problem with an app rather than the iPad. Quitting, then reopening the app may fix the problem.

Remove all apps from the App Switcher . Your iPad adds every app you open to the App Switcher, the iPad task manager, so that you can quickly switch between apps while multitasking. After a while, the number of apps in the App Switcher can add up. Many of these apps are in a suspended mode or running in the background. Removing apps from the App Switcher frees up memory and can improve performance.

Quit apps that are running in the background . Some apps continue to run in the background, even after you quit the app. These are usually apps that stream music (such as the built-in Music app, Pandora, and Spotify) and video streaming apps (such as the Apple TV app or apps from cable and satellite providers).

Check your Wi-Fi connection . If restarting the iPad doesn't improve its performance, it may not be the iPad that is running slow. It may be your wireless network. If the wireless network checks out,  run an internet speed test . If the speed increases as you move closer to the router, look into boosting your Wi-Fi range .

Update iPadOS . It's important to keep the operating system up to date. Doing so ensures that you have the most recent performance updates as well as the latest security fixes.

Install an ad blocker . If your iPad primarily slows down when browsing the web, but your internet speed is good, it may be the pages you visit. The more advertisements a web page has, the longer the page takes to load. Ad blockers prevent ads from loading on web pages, making the web pages load in Safari more quickly.

Turn off Background App Refresh . Background App Refresh allows apps to refresh their content even when you aren't using them. For example, Facebook can retrieve posts for your news feed, or a news app can fetch the latest articles so that they're ready for you. As a result, this feature takes up processing time and internet bandwidth , which could cause the iPad to run a little slower.

Delete iPad apps you no longer use . If the iPad is low on storage space, making room on the device can sometimes improve performance. To see which apps use the most space on your iPad, select Settings > General > iPad Storage . Here, you can view all the apps installed on the iPad, when you last used each one, and how much room each takes up. Delete the apps you don't use by tapping the app, then selecting Delete App .

You can also set iPadOS to remove seldom-used apps automatically to free up space (while maintaining your files and data for those apps). To do so, select Settings > General > iPad Storage , then select Enable next to Offload Unused Apps .

There could be several reasons it's charging slowly , including not using the charger that came with your iPad. Also, charging your iPad with your computer may not produce enough power to charge properly.

If you have an app that won't update on your iPad, including the OS, the first thing to try is to reboot your iPad. You can also remove and reinstall the app. Make sure you have a reliable network connection; the download may keep stalling out if you have a spotty connection.

'Why is my iPad so slow?': How to get your iPad running smoothly again

  • Your iPad shouldn't slow down in the same way an aging Windows PC slows down, but it might still suffer from sluggish behavior occasionally. There a handful of things you can test to get it running at full speed.
  • The most likely culprit is a misbehaving app ā€” you can close apps one at a time to see if that solves your problem.
  • One thing you should not do is routinely close apps manually. This can actually be counterproductive, since the iPad's operating system is optimized to manage apps in the background for you.
  • Visit BusinessInsider.com for more stories.

A common complaint among PC users is that their computer seems to slow down over time. And traditionally, there's a good explanation for that: Windows has a tendency to get bloated as new software continuously bogs down the Registry.

You might not expect an iPad to suffer the same sort of sluggishness, but in reality, a number of factors can slow down your iPad.

One thing not to do: Routinely close apps

There are people who believe that apps should routinely be closed; they regularly swipe to close every app running in the background throughout the day. To be perfectly clear: this will not speed up your iPad and may in fact slow it down. The iPad's operating system is designed to manage apps efficiently, putting unused apps in a low-power standby mode when not in use. If you close apps regularly, you are actually causing the iPad to take more time to switch apps and access data. Speeding up your iOS device via closing apps is a myth, and you should not do this.

Close a misbehaving app

That said, far and away, the most common cause of slow behavior on your iPad is a misbehaving app. If your iPad starts running slower than usual, try to sleuth out which app might be responsible.

Is there an app that you are using each time the iPad slows down? The app doesn't need to necessarily be the one you're using at the moment. Some apps continue to run in the background (particularly apps that stream content like Spotify and Pandora, and apps that need to track your location, like Google Maps).

To troubleshoot this issue, completely close any apps that might be slowing down your iPad. If that solves the problem, try running the app again. It might be an intermittent problem that closing the app solved. If so, great. If it immediately slows down again, see if there's an updated version of the app. If not, you might want to stop using it, or uninstall and reinstall the app. But to reiterate the previous point, only close apps if you suspect they are not working properly and slowing down your device. Don't make a habit of closing all apps.

Check your WiFi connection

With the deep interconnectedness of hardware, software, networks, and services, it can be hard to know exactly what's slowing down a computer, and in fact it might not be your iPad at all ā€” your wireless network might be what's causing everything to feel like molasses.

You would be wise to suspect your internet connection. First, make sure that you have a solid WiFi signal (you should see three bars in the WiFi indicator at the top right of your screen). If it's weak, move closer to your WiFi router.

If it's still weak, reboot the router (turn it off, wait two minutes, and then turn it back on again). If that doesn't solve the problem, you might need to perform additional troubleshooting on the router. Check other devices like your laptop and iPhone to see if they also show a weak WiFi connection.

But if your WiFi signal is strong, try one other thing: Test the speed of your internet connection. On your iPad, google "Internet speed test" and use one of the resulting sites to see how your iPad performs. A popular speed test site is Speedtest.net . There's no single number you should be looking for, but consumer broadband speeds in the US usually offer at least 100 Mbps download speed and 10 Mbps upload ā€” if you get a result that's significantly slower than that, check with your internet provider to see if that's expected or if you have an issue that needs to be addressed.

Clear your iPad's cache

If your iPad is slow primarily when you're using the web browser, you may need to clear your browser cache. The cache stores all sorts of temporary internet files, including bits of web pages (so they load faster the next time you visit the same site), login information, and cookies that track your behavior online. The intent of a browser cache is to speed up web browsing, but when the cache gets too bloated, it can have the opposite effect.

To speed up your web browsing or use of other apps, clear the cache from either ā€“ but be aware that you'll be automatically signed out of any websites you were using when you clear your browser cache, and you'll need to log in again.

Restart your iPad

If those options failed to resolve your problem, then you should restart your iPad . Restarting it ā€” essentially, turning it off and then back on again ā€” is usually not necessary, but if you have "gummed up" your iPad with misbehaving apps or some other unusual software glitch, rebooting the device can clear the memory and let you start fresh.

Free some space

If your iPad has only recently started slowing down, it might be because it's running out of storage space. You might have installed some apps or stored a lot of video recently that has tapped out your iPad's ability to run at full speed. You can check on your free space by opening the Settings app, tapping "General," and then "iPad Storage." The top of the screen shows how much free space you have available. If you are running low on space, you should consider deleting some data or large apps as described in the "Clear your app cache on an iPad" section in our article " How to clear the cache on your iPad and make it run faster ."

Restore your iPad to factory settings

If there's a software issue that you haven't been able to ferret out with the previous troubleshooting steps. If that's the case, you might want to try the "nuclear" option: restore your iPad to its factory settings . If you do this, it's a good idea not to restore the iPad from a backup, since it would simply restore the problem back to your iPad. Instead, rebuild your iPad by reinstalling the apps you need one at a time and configuring your settings manually.

If none of the above options work:

  • You may have a problem with your iPad's hardware. The only real fix is to take it to an Apple Store for servicing, or to replace it. For example, if the iPad is old and the battery runs out quickly, the iPad's processor might be slowing down to help the battery last longer.
  • Perhaps your iPad is not really running slower, and it just seems that way compared to the performance of a newer device you've been using. You might only be aware of how slow your iPad is because it's several years old and isn't as snappy as the newest model.

How to Speed Up an iPad

The more you use an iPad the more it will slow down, no matter how old it is – and don’t get us started on OS updates that slow it down even more. Fortunately speeding up an iPad is relatively easy; we’ve outlined some great, actionable tips, from clearing the cache to deleting unwanted apps, updating iOS/iPadOS and disabling background- and location services.

If these tips can’t satisfactorily speed things up, you may have to bite the bullet and buy a new iPad (check out our iPad buying guide for detailed advice, or our roundup of the best iPad deals ).

If you’ve got a slow iPhone , we can help you there, too.

Has Apple slowed down my iPad deliberately?

Let’s get this argument out the way first of all. The answer is no. Apple has admitted that it deliberately slowed down older iPhones in order to avoid battery problems, but this does not apply to iPads.

Apple confirms in a support document that its power management feature is specific to iPhone and doesn’t apply to any other Apple products.

Delete apps you no longer use

The first trick is to have a good software clear-out. Remove any apps that you no longer use. Apps take up storage space, and freeing up space makes it easier for iOS to operate.

Note that we’re talking about deleting the apps from the device entirely, not just closing them down (by double-tapping the Home button – or doing a long swipe up on an iPad without a Home button – to open the multitasking bar, then swiping up on the app you want to close).

Deleting apps that you no longer use has a notable effect on iOS and, more recently, iPadOS – especially if you have limited storage available because it will free up space.

You can delete apps you no longer want or use by pressing and holding on the app icon until it starts to jump around. In iPadOS 13, you tap and hold then select Rearrange Icons to access the delete function. Then tap on the X in the top right of the icon to delete it.

If you’re looking to delete multiple apps, there’s a quicker and easier way than deleting each one individually. Tap Settings > General > iPad Storage. You’ll see a graph of your usage, a couple of recommendations, then a list of apps organised by the amount of storage they take up.

Look for items that are taking up lots of space and which you can live without. Podcasts, GarageBand and Movies are likely suspects. It’s probably also worth turning on Photo syncing on iCloud if you’ve got a large collection of photos and videos stored locally.

Tap an app to view a few more details, and then tap Delete App to remove the app and its documents and data – or use the newer Offload App option, which deletes the app but leaves the data behind. This is great for games which have large graphics files but small game saves that you’d like to keep.

Here’s a guide on how to delete iPad apps .

Restart your iPad

Restart your iPad

Once you’ve removed apps you don’t use from your iPad, you should restart it . The restart refreshes the memory and enables it to start from scratch.

To restart your iPad, hold down the Sleep/Wake button at the top until you see the Slide To Power Off control slider, and then swipe it to power down your iPad.

(If you’ve got a newer iPad Pro, the procedure is slightly different – you press and hold both the power button and one of the volume buttons until the power-off slider appears.)

Give it a few seconds, then press and hold the Sleep/Wake button again to wake it back up.

Stop Background App Refresh

Stop Background App Refresh

Now that you’ve freed up some memory your iPad should already be working much faster. But if you’re using an older iPad, such as an iPad mini or iPad Air 2, then you’ll get even better results by turning off features you can manage without.

Start by stopping Background App Refresh. If you have this service selected in Settings your iPad will be working away in the background checking all your apps for updates. If you have a lot of active apps – social networking apps like Facebook are particularly notorious for this – they will be taking processing power from your iPad without you even having the app open in front of you.

Tap Settings > General > Background App Refresh and set Background App Refresh to Off.

You could leave it so that some of your apps use background app refresh and others don’t, but we feel like you might as well turn the whole thing off.

Update to the latest version of iOS

Update to the latest version of iOS

In general, updating iOS can be a mixed bag in terms of speed. Newer versions of iOS introduce new and more efficient code, and patch known problems; but they also add new features which can actually slow down an older iOS device. And updating iOS is almost always a one-way process, so only do it if you’re sure.

However, iOS 13 , the most recent update, promises speed boosts, so that should be a safe bet – as long as your iPad is compatible.

In any case, if your iPad is unusably slow after trying all the other tips here, it’s worth updating if you aren’t already running the most recent version of iOS. Tap Settings > General > Software Update and check if there’s a new version of iOS available.

Clear Safari’s cache

Clear Safari's cache

Safari is one app where you might notice slowdown more than most. This can be caused by a full cache, which Safari has to search through.

Tap Settings > General > Clear History and Website Data to remove all of the Safari cache information.

This should speed up the Safari interface, although web pages may take slightly longer to load in the short term (as the cache fills back up).

We’ve got more tips about improving your browser’s performance in a separate article: How to speed up Safari .

Find out if your web connection is slow

Find out if your web connection is slow

If Safari is still running slowly, the issue might not be with your iPad, but instead with your internet connection. It doesn’t matter how fast your iPad is, if your connection to the internet is weak then it’ll slow things down to a snail’s pace.

Download a speed test app such as  Ookla’s Speedtest and run the test. The average broadband speed in the UK is around the 29mb/s mark, but it can be much higher (or lower) in some places.

If you find that your internet is extremely low, around the 1-4mb/s mark, that might explain why your iPad is running so slowly – especially in Safari and other apps that require an active internet connection.

The solution? Move closer to your Wi-Fi router, or look into Wi-Fi extenders to provide wider wireless coverage in the home.

Stop Notifications

Stop Notifications

Notifications can helpfully alert you when messages arrive on your iPad, but sometimes you don’t really need a notification – for example, every time someone comments on a post on Facebook  or when you get more lives in your favourite free-to-play game.

As with Background App Refresh, scanning for and providing notifications can slow down an older iPad.

Tap Settings > Notifications and, for each app, set Notifications to Off.

Turn off Location Services

Turn off Location Services

While it can be handy for apps like Maps and Facebook to know your location, Location Services is liable to sit in the background sucking up battery power and reducing performance.

Tap Settings > Privacy > Location Services and set Location Services to Off. Tap Turn Off. Just be aware that doing so will remove the Find My function, and you won’t be able to locate it from the Find My app in iOS 13.

Turn off Spotlight

Turn off Spotlight

Spotlight powers search on your iPad, making it quick to find something, but it has to index each item on your iPad that can occasionally slow things down.

Tap Settings > General > Spotlight Search and set all the Search Results items to Off.

Enable Reduce Motion

Enable Reduce Motion

If you’ve turned off everything else and want a little bit more speed, turning off some of the visual effects can provide a slight speed boost. Tap Settings > General > Accessibility > Reduce Motion and set Reduce Motion to On.

Safari Too Slow on Your iPhone? 4 Ways to Speed It Up

Are webpages taking forever to load in Safari? Follow these troubleshooting steps to resolve your speed-related issues.

Safari is the native browser on Apple devices. While it's usually fast, sometimes Safari can be slow or laggy. When this happens, it can be bothersome, and some might even download another third-party browser.

If you're noticing that Safari is running slow on your iPhone, there are several things you can do to speed it up again. Give these tips a try, and hopefully, Safari will be at full speed in no time.

Check Your Internet Speed

Before passing the blame on Safari, it might be a good idea to check your internet speed. That way, you can make sure Safari is the issue and rule out anything else before continuing.

If you're connected to Wi-Fi, open another computer or device on the same Wi-Fi network, then head to Speedtest's site and check your internet speed. You won't want to do this on your iPhone, as Safari issues can slow your connection time, giving you a false negative.

If your internet speed is fast, then Safari is the issue, and it's time to fix it.

1. Close All Your Safari Tabs

Safari can usually handle a lot of bandwidth and keep many pages open. However, some websites drain Safari data. By closing all the currently open tabs, you can confirm if one of the open websites was using too much data.

Safari home page on an iPhone

To close all the tabs on Safari, open Safari and hold the Tab button in the bottom right-hand corner. A prompt will appear for you to close all the tabs. Once this appears, hit Close All Tabs . Then, give Safari a try again.

2. Clear Your Browsing History and Data

iphone settings menu

If clearing the tabs didn't fix the issue, you can reset Safari and clear up the cache, speeding it up in the process. To clear Safari, head to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Data .

Once you do this, relaunch Safari and see if it's loading up pages quickly enough. If it's faster for a little while but begins to slow down again, proceed to the next tip.

3. Check Your iPhone's Storage

If your iPhone storage is almost full, that means it can't handle much else. Safari, like most apps, uses device storage to store data from the app. And low storage means Safari won't have enough memory to work.

This is why some users find Safari temporarily faster once they clear their browsing history and data. However, some users might have used so much storage that Safari might not even speed up when you clear the cache.

iphone settings menu general

Luckily, it's easy to check if this is an issue. All you need to do is head to Settings > General > Storage and see how much space your iPhone has used. And if it's almost full, you might have to delete some large files.

However, if you don't want to lose precious data, consider signing up for a paid iCloud plan .

4. Reset Network Settings

iPhone reset page in Settings

When all else fails, you can reset your iPhone's Network Settings. Doing this will reset all network-related connections on your iPhone, hopefully speeding up Safari in the process. Head to Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings to do this.

Once you do this, you'll need to set up your network connections again. This means re-entering your Wi-Fi passwords. However, it can clear up a lot of bugs, so it is worth a try if all else fails. You can also reset your iPhone to factory settings as a last resort.

Browse Seamlessly in Safari

Safari comes pre-installed on all Apple devices, including the iPhone, iPad, and Mac. And since it's the native browser, it works seamlessly across all your apps and Apple devices.

While switching to a third-party browser like Chrome might seem tempting when Safari is slow or lagging, you'll miss out on a seamless experience. So, it's worth taking the time to fix whatever issue you're facing.

Youtube suddenly slow to load in Safari on MacOS

As of about two weeks ago, Youtube has suddenly started getting really slow to load. I click on a video and sound starts coming out before the video and the controls. It then takes several seconds for it to slowly "assemble" parts of the page. It WILL eventually load, but it takes a long time and it only happens in MacOS. The iPhone and iPad seem to be fine. I'm now having to open Youtube in Chrome on the desktop.

I'm hoping this can get resolved for MacOS soon. It's really frustrating. I've noticed that other people are have posted about the same issue in Reddit. Has anyone else had this problem? Has anyone found a solution?

Apple typically slows down older machines. For instance, if you own a 2014 mac mini, safari will become slower. Not to mention the lack of updates. Not to mention your RAM size may affect performance. Apple sells their macs with 8 gb of ram. Older ones have less than 4 gb. RAM can be taken up with applications or programs running in your background or tabs you have open.

My Mac is a 2020 M1 Mac mini. It's been running smooth as glass since the day I got it.

Ram is 16 gb.

Everything else works fine, all the websites in Safari load normally, and Youtube was fine until a couple of weeks ago when it started doing this out of the blue one morning.

I'm still a little confused by this issue.

Facebook and Instagram restored after users report widespread outages

By Aimee Picchi

Edited By Anne Marie Lee

Updated on: March 5, 2024 / 2:33 PM EST / CBS News

Meta says its Facebook and Instagram services have been restored, after more than half a million users reported widespread issues earlier in the day, with many saying they were booted out of the social media platforms and unable to log back in.

DownDetector, a site that monitors internet service outages, on Tuesday said it  received  more than 500,000 reports of problems by U.S. Facebook users and more than 70,000 reported problems with Instagram as of about 10:30 a.m. ET. The most frequently reported problems were with logging into the Facebook app and issues with the Instagram app, according to DownDetector.

"Earlier today, a technical issue caused people to have difficulty accessing some of our services," a Meta Spokesman said in a statement on Tuesday. "We resolved the issue as quickly as possible for everyone who was impacted, and we apologize for any inconvenience."

Facebook users from across the globe reported that they were unable to log in to the service, ranging from Egypt to Oklahoma, according to DownDetector. Some people on social media expressed concern that their accounts had been hacked because they had been booted out of the service and were unable to get back in with their passwords.

"Meta platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and Threads are currently experiencing outages related to login sessions in multiple countries; incident not related to country-level internet disruptions or filtering," according to NetBlocks, a global internet monitor, on X earlier Tuesday.

Meta Quest's artificial reality headsets were also signed out,  according  to tech site 9to5Mac. WhatsApp, which is also owned by Meta, appeared unaffected.

The issue represented a "major outage incident," wrote NetBlocks director of research Isik Mater on X during the service interruption. "[E]ven the company's official status page is currently showing status 'Unknown' across the board."

Amidst an ongoing disruption to Meta services, even the company's official status page is currently showing status "Unknown" across the board. Major outage incident. #Metadown https://t.co/0Hhfmb4uSM pic.twitter.com/9GrOICiIpl — Isik Mater (@isik5) March 5, 2024

A senior official with the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency told reporters Tuesday that the agency was "not aware of any specific election nexus nor any specific malicious cyberactivity nexus to the outage."

The outage came just ahead of Thursday's deadline for large technology companies to fall in line with the European Union's new Digital Markets Act. To comply, Meta is making changes, like allowing users to separate their Facebook and Instagram accounts so personal information can't be combined to target them with online ads. It's not clear whether the outage is connected to any preparations Meta might be implementing to adhere to the law.

Facebook has more than 2 billion daily active users worldwide, according to Meta.
