Tips for Senior Travelers in Dominican Republic

Since most of their needs are taken care of in the all-inclusive resorts, seniors form a large part of the patronage at the resorts of Punta Cana and Playa Dorada. Casa de Campo at La Romana is one of the most preferred destinations in the Caribbean for the senior traveler.

One of the benefits of age is that travel often costs less. Don't be shy about asking for discounts, but always carry some kind of ID, such as a driver's license, if you've kept your youthful glow. Also, mention the fact that you're a senior when you first make your travel reservations.

Members of AARP, 601 E St. NW, Washington, DC 20049 (tel. 888/687-2277; www.aarp.org), get discounts on hotels, airfares, and car rentals, plus AARP The Magazine and a monthly newsletter.

Arm yourself with whatever information you can before you go, as there is no local agency catering to senior travel.

Note : This information was accurate when it was published, but can change without notice. Please be sure to confirm all rates and details directly with the companies in question before planning your trip.

The 12 Best All-Inclusive Caribbean Resorts for Seniors

punta cana senior trip

Couples Swept Away

All-inclusive resorts originated in the Caribbean in the 1970s, and there are now a variety of options across the region for travelers today. For traveling seniors, all-inclusive resorts can be a wonderful combination of luxury, serenity, and accessibility. As an added plus, vacationing at an all-inclusive resort can make it easier to stick to an established budget. Luxury all-inclusive resorts can take the stress out of travel, and hotel amenities and services can make it easier to explore your surrounding environs. Read on for the top 12 resorts for an all-inclusive Caribbean senior vacation.

Carlisle Bay, Antigua

Carlisle Bay

The luxurious Carlisle Bay resort offers a luxurious, all-inclusive experience along the gorgeous Caribbean Sea in Antigua. The 87-room resort offers both family and adult-only offerings for seniors looking to vacation with friends, solo, or with members of their extended family. This is a solid offering for seniors, as the amenities are unparalleled, with wonderful tennis courts, spas, fitness centers, and yoga pavilions. Additionally, the dining is extensive, with four restaurants and three bars. Located in Antigua's Saint Mary Parish, Carlisle Bay's all-inclusive packages cost roughly $700 per night.

Sailrock, South Caicos

Sailrock Resort

If you're looking for a dream destination in the tropics, look no further than Sailrock in South Caicos. Unlike the more popular island of Providenciales, South Caicos is more remote and secluded—perfect for the senior traveler looking to get away from it all. The resort offers all-inclusive meal options, and visitors can travel via golf cart across the extensive property. Seaside villas often include luxurious swimming pools, and guests shouldn't be surprised to find a wild donkey or two strolling across the property at night. The All-Inclusive, All-Luxury package runs for about $439 per night.

Sugar Beach Viceroy, St. Lucia

Sugar Beach Viceroy

Sugar Beach Viceroy was voted one of the 9 best luxury all-inclusive resorts by TripSavvy in 2020, awarded for having the Best View . Sugar Beach boasts one of the absolute best locations on the island, set between the Pitons and boasting two white-sand beaches. The resort is perfect for seniors, as well, as each cottage and villa comes equipped with 24-hour room service and butlers to attend to your every need. Check out the elegant dining options, tennis courts, and tree-house spa while visiting. There is currently a 30% offer on the all-inclusive offer at Sugar Beach Viceroy, and villas are roughly $1,300 per night, though pricing varies based on accommodations. Another option in Soufriere, Saint Lucia, is Ladera resort, which also features all-inclusive options.

Mount Cinnamon, Grenada

Mount Cinnamon

We're headed to Grenada for our next option, the luxury all-inclusive Mount Cinnamon Resort . The resort features gorgeous views of the island, and elegant dining options overlooking the Caribbean Sea. Additionally, the property features a beach bar, water sports, and lawn games. The tranquil environment is the perfect getaway, while the all-inclusive options provide convenience for senior travelers. Located on Grand Anse Beach in St. George parish, and rooms begin roughly in the $400 range (though the cost is higher during the holidays, and drops to about $300 in the off-season).

Cobbler's Cove, Barbados

Check into The Pink Lady, also known as Cobbler's Cove , located in Barbados. Barbados is famous for its charm and hospitality, and Cobbler's Cove does not disappoint. Voted the Best Caribbean All-Inclusive by TripSavvy, Cobbler's Cove is famous for its private beach and lush gardens. Plus, the chic interior makes visitors feel they're arriving at a particularly accommodating mansion rather than an impersonal resort. Located in Speightstown, in the parish of St. Peter, room rates are about $900, though they increase to $1,100 during the winter holidays and drop to roughly $500 during the off-season.

Ritz-Carlton St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands

Ritz-Carlton St. Thomas

Some all-inclusive resorts cater to families with children and focus on activities appropriate for an age mix of participants; others attract boisterous singles and younger couples looking for a party vacation with plenty of alcohol. To avoid those types of distractions, look for an adults-only property with the types of amenities and activities that most appeal to you. The Ritz-Carlton St. Thomas offers the best of both worlds, with adults-only areas plus kid-friendly zones as well. Overlooking Great Bay, room rates begin at $980 during peak season, though price fluctuates based on the date of travel and type of accommodation.

Divi & Tamarijn, Aruba

Get two for the price of one when you check into Divi and its sister resort, Tamarijn, on the "One Happy Island" of Aruba. The resorts are perfect for the senior luxury traveler interested in cultural excursions, as the colorful downtown charm of Oranjestad is located minutes away. Rental cars aren't necessary as complimentary shuttles link both resorts, including transport to The Links, a 9-hole golf course overlooking the ocean. Plus, the Tamarijn has recently reopened after a five-million-dollar renovation, and there are currently savings of 50 perfect on all-inclusive rates. Through March 31st, travelers to Divi can receive up to 45% off resort packages, and rooms begin at roughly $470 per night for both resorts (Divi and Tamarijn).

Hotel Riu Palace Paradise Island, Bahamas

Head to Lighthouse Pointe at Grand Lucayan, an all-inclusive  on Grand Bahama Island which boasts spacious rooms with gorgeous balconies, as well as unlimited golfing on the Reef Course. There are regular events for visitors, including beach barbecues. Another option is the Hotel Riu Palace , an  all-inclusive resort  that is located on the Bahamian island of New Providence, near downtown Nassau. Though there are enough activities, you may never feel the need to leave the resort.

Excellence Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Excellence Punta Cana

While some islands, such as Martinique, do not feature all-inclusive resorts, others, such as the Dominican Republic, have a variety of such resort offerings. The Excellence Punta Cana was ranked one of the 9 best all-inclusive resorts in the Dominican Republic in 2020 by TripSavvy and was particularly noted for having the best beachfront . The adults-only resort along the northeast coast offers expansive beaches and sheltered dunes for privacy, with tropical forests extending from the coastline with a half-mile density in either direction. Additionally, the variety of cuisine and spa treatments will satisfy the indulgences of luxury-seeking senior travelers. Plus, the resort abides by the Punta Cana Promise , established to ensure maximal safety for vacationers in Punta Cana. Guests have the option of booking vacation packages that feature both flight and hotel costs, and the price for a room begins at about $1,1400 during the peak winter months. Another option in the Dominican Republic includes the Casa de Campo. The course at Casa de Campo in the Dominican Republic earns accolades as the Caribbean's best.

Fort Young Hotel, Dominica

Fort Young Hotel

Our next selection is perfect for senior travelers looking to explore a new part of the Caribbean without sacrificing luxury. Dominica's Fort Young Hotel offers an all-inclusive package and boasts waterside views that will remind travelers of the Amalfi coast (particularly the umbrella-lined pool overlooking the sea). The resort features various adventure and activity packages for travelers interested in exploring the Caribbean's "Nature Island." Life at the resort also includes weekly cocktail hours and gorgeous seaside dining. Plus, the hotel will also schedule activities and coordinate travel to said activities for its visitors who may be reluctant to brave the island's winding, vertiginous roads. Located in the capital of Roseau, Oceanfront room prices average at about $315 per night during the high season of the winter months.

Couples Tower Isle, Jamaica

Couples Tower Isle

The Couples Tower Isle in Jamaica has a wonderful, laid-back vibe for senior travelers looking for a peaceful vacation. The flagship property of all the Couples Resorts in Jamaica, the Couples Tower Isle has various health and wellness options, including tennis and aquatic fitness classes. The spa and Veggie Bar also establishes this destination as a wellness oasis. Located in Ocho Rios, the room price can vary at about $1,900 based on travel dates during the high season. Other options in Jamaica include the  Couples Swept Away  Resort, which attracts tennis lovers, and the Breezes Grand in Negril, Jamaica, which provides an array of fine-dining options.

Lions Dive Beach Resort, Curacao

Lions Dive Beach Resort

Our next selection, in Curacao, is perfect for the senior traveler looking for an active vacation. Lions Dive Beach Resort is perfect for visitors looking to get their scuba certificate and is perfect for senior travelers up for an adventure. The resort coordinates your lessons and certification, and you will be studying Dive SSI training. Additionally, the resort's array of beach bars and restaurants are divine. Located in Willemstad, rooms begin at about $230 per night, though the price varies by the size of your accommodation.

We have an exceptional safety record and take a number of precautions, including working with reputable handpicked partners, and providing our travelers with real-time SMS and email alerts, and more. At both US and international spring break trips, we have a risk mitigation team onsite who focus on emergency planning and escalation.

With any location, we advise that you keep your belongings safe at all times, avoid provoking strangers, and always show respect to vendor officials and locals. We also recommend traveling in groups to and from events, especially after dark.

Yes! As well as providing financial protection in case things go wrong during your trip, travel insurance will also mean that you have cancellation cover if you can’t go for certain reasons. We recommend purchasing at the time of booking or through our referral link with Travel Insured International (you may also purchase insurance from other providers and provide this evidence to us). Travel insurance policies can be very complex, so we’d recommend that you do your research and carefully read policy documents to determine what is and isn’t included.

Hotels routinely ask for a credit card to be placed on hold for INCIDENTALS or a SECURITY DEPOSIT. As long as there are no issues with the hotel room (no damage and no outstanding room service balances), you should receive the deposit back.

RESORT FEES or hotel PARKING FEES are NOT included in your trip pricing. We cannot collect this fee on behalf of the hotel due to the fact these fees often change and are out of our control. Therefore, you will be responsible for paying resort fees and/or parking fees with the hotel directly, upon arrival.

If you have any questions regarding incidentals and resort fees, please contact the hotel directly.

Airport Fees:

If you are traveling internationally, you’ll be charged U.S. and foreign departure taxes and fees in addition to your package price. These taxes and fees vary depending on your departure city and destination, and may change if the government changes the fees between the time you book and the time you travel. Passengers are responsible for any changes in taxes and fees. Tours may also include a processing fee that varies by destination. When you price your trip, all airport fees and processing fees will be included in your final price.

Change Fees:

Changes are no problem as long as our suppliers can accommodate the request. We can’t make any guarantees, but we do promise to make every effort on your behalf. There is a per person fee for changing a reservation in any way once All Roads Travel has received your deposit. Adding customers to an existing reservation is NOT considered a change. Change fees will be applied for, but are not limited to, the following situations: name changes, hotel changes, and destination changes. These additional fees will appear on your final price after the change has been made.

Cancellation Fees:

Once your deposit is received, all cancellations must be written and sent to our office via email. There is a cancellation fee that will be assessed to your account based on time of cancellation. If your package is paid in full and includes the Comprehensive Travel Insurance, you may be entitled to a refund through the insurance company. Please contact our Customer Service department at [email protected] with any cancellation requests or questions.

Resort Fees:

Resort fees are a daily “mandatory” additional charge that the hotel property charges outside of the initial booking cost. These fees are under the discretion of the hotel and will need to be paid by the traveler, not All Roads Travel.

No, you do not have to be in college to book with JusCollege for any of our destination events! Most of our packages are open to the general public, the only requirement is that all of our travelers must be 18+.

The only restrictions we have are the ones enforced by our hotel and club partners. Some hotels have 18+ check-in requirements and some have 21+. For example: Las Vegas has mostly a 21+ minimum age check-in requirement, while Cabo and Puerto Vallarta has a 18+ minimum check-in requirement. This also varies by property as well.

American Airlines passenger dies after medical emergency on Charlotte-bound flight

punta cana senior trip

A commercial passenger flight bound for North Carolina was diverted to an island southeast of the Bahamas Wednesday after a woman on board suffered a medical emergency and died, police said.

The  Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force reported the commercial flight was heading to Charlotte when a 41-year-old woman fell ill.

American Airlines flight 2790 departed from Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic before it was diverted to Providenciales International Airport "for the medical needs of a passenger," a spokesperson for the airline said in a statement obtained by USA TODAY.

Just before 6:15 p.m., police said, officers received a call from Air Traffic Control Tower requesting medical assistance for the woman who, at the time, was receiving CPR.

Autopsy to determine woman's cause of death

A medical team, along with police units, were dispatched, and the woman was transported to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

An autopsy was slated to be performed to determine the woman's cause of death, authorities said.

The flight continued to Charlotte the following day, the airline spokesperson said.

Our Punta Cana expert answers your most pressing travel questions

Chelsea Bengier

Crystal clear water, sugary white-sand, beachfront resorts… That’s our kind of vacation. And the Dominican Republic has all of it and more. Take a look at our Punta Cana forum and you’ll see tons of info on the area from Sly (AKA Slyguy23 ). He’s been taking an annual retreat to the DR for the past 30 years, and although he’s been around the whole island, he keeps returning to Punta Cana. “It blew me away—the people, the climate, the beaches, the energy, everything.”

Now, he’s answered your top questions—everything from the best adults-only resorts to the secret beaches of your castaway dreams. Read on for his expert Punta Cana tips and tricks.

Pier leads out to the water beyond

TRIPADVISOR: “I’m planning a five-night girls’ trip. We’re in our late 30s and want an adults-only resort on the beach. It doesn't have to be extremely fancy or quiet, but we’d like to avoid spring break parties.”

SLY : There are 150 resorts in Punta Cana, 20 of which are adults-only . I’ve stayed at around 25 resorts and 10 adults-only ones. My favorite is Royalton CHIC (where I'm going again in two weeks). It’s a smaller (330-room) adults-only resort in Marriott’s Autograph Collection. Everything is top-notch and the amenities are excellent. Set on a tranquil beach, you’ll find Bali beds and lounge areas in the sand. It’s not a party place, but it does have classy entertainment options that lend a fun vibe. The events are very interactive (think: DJs, live bands, dance sessions.) That’s much more interesting than just sitting in a theater and watching a show. But it’s the food that makes CHIC special. Although there are only four restaurants, each has an extensive menu (you don’t see that at any other resort). For example, the Italian restaurant, Vespa , has 12 pastas, 10 pizzas, and a handful of entrees. The best part? CHIC isn’t as expensive as larger resorts like Secrets and Excellence, but the quality is equally as high. Live Aqua is a gorgeous second choice, if CHIC doesn’t have availability.

TRIPADVISOR: “We are a family looking for an upscale resort. It should have a kids club but also nice adults-only areas for my husband and I when our children are busy.”

Aerial view of resort waterpark and pool area

SLY : Last Christmas, I went to Dreams Onyx , which shares amenities with Breathless, right next door. Dreams is a fantastic new family resort. The kids will love the large water park, lazy river, and lagoon pool. There is a kids’ club, a teens’ club, and activities all day. For very young kids, they've even got a saltwater wading pool on the beach. Meanwhile, Breathless is an 18+ resort, so some parents drop their kids off at Dreams and hop over to Breathless , which is very lively—I call it spring break for adults. Especially in the evening, there’s always something happening at Breathless: performances, music, bars, etc.

TRIPADVISOR: “I would love to find a quiet, under-the-radar beach. Clear water, soft sand, and few vendors. I’m renting a car, so it doesn’t have to be attached to a resort.”

Empty beachfront looking out over small waves with a single surfer in the water

SLY : Juanillo Beach is one of the nicest in Cap Cana. Secrets , the two Hyatts, Margaritaville , and Sanctuary are located on that beach. ( Cap Cana is a gated community, but it’s still open to the public, so you can visit even if you’re not staying there.) Macao is an isolated beach further north, about 25 minutes from the airport. Dreams Macao Beach is the only resort and there’s a surf camp. Otherwise, it’s pretty deserted and you can have the whole beach to yourself. So that’s another area like Cap Cana where you're not going to have a lot of foot traffic or vendors.

TRIPADVISOR: “We want to spend a day at a beach bar with bungalows. We’d heard about Eden Rock Beach Club in Cap Cana, but wouldn’t mind trying a few of them.”

SLY : Surprisingly, there aren’t a lot of beach clubs. Helios and Zoho are near Secrets Royal Beach, and they’ve been recommended (though I haven’t visited myself). All the beach clubs in Punta Cana are between Bávaro , El Cortecito , and Los Corales . These are the three main areas due to the number of Airbnbs, restaurants, bars, and shops.

TRIPADVISOR: “I want to treat myself and bliss out at a spa. Which are the best ones?”

Open air cavern with a hydrotherapy pool and a circle of reclining chairs and yoga beds

SLY : The new all-inclusive Hyatt Ziva and Hyatt Zilara (adults-only) in Cap Cana certainly come to mind when you're talking about high-end resorts with beautiful spas. Although, if it were me, I’d go to a local spa because the prices are half that. Flavio Acuna Spa offers massages on the beach (try the moonlight couples massage). Up the coast, Tropical Treasure does massages on a deck almost over the water, so you can hear the waves. It’s about a 10-minute walk up the beach from Dreams Onyx, and it’s only $35 for an hour-long, full-body relaxing massage.

TRIPADVISOR: “What are some unique excursions you recommend for a group?”

SLY : My friend Mike is a Canadian expat from Toronto. He runs smaller, private tours in the area with his company Punta Cana Mike . I think he's been doing it for nearly 20 years now. It's certainly not your standard large bus tour. He takes six to 10 people to places that aren’t tourist traps (you might go to a school or local restaurant). This way, he provides a realistic view of the culture in the Dominican Republic. Others that come to mind are Mike Fisher for deep-sea fishing expeditions and small-group boat trips, as well as Xtreme Buggy , which will take you down back roads to little villages and Macao Beach for a swim.
