Autumn in japan.

What does autumn in Japan mean? Autumn in Japan is the season of harvest and spectacular autumn leaves. Experience beautiful scenery, comfortable temperatures, and charming festivals when you visit Japan in autumn.

The autumn season in Japan is distinguished by its cool, pleasant temperatures and its striking scenery of reds and golds. It is also the time of harvest, where rice is cut, baled, and distributed. Additionally, many autumn festivals take place in celebration of harvest time, autumn foliage (koyo), and historic occasions. Experience an unforgettable vacation to Japan in autumn, the most comfortable season of Japan.

photo of Autumn in Japan

Visiting Japan in September Visiting Japan in September means less crowds and mostly clear skies. There are still occasional hot and humid days during September, but the leaves begin to change its color in Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan. From late September to October, the transition to autumn season begins in Hokkaido and Tohoku, where autumn leaves are first seen. The changing autumn colors then make its way southward to other parts of Japan. Visiting Japan in October During October, the colorful autumn foliage makes its appearance in Hokkaido, Tohoku, Nikko, Mt. Fuji, Hakone, and the Japanese Alps areas (Nagano, Takayama, Shirakawago). October is noted as one of the most pleasant times to visit Japan. Travelers can experience the beautiful Takayama Autumn Festival on October 9th to 10th, and remark the eye-catching kochia scoparia plant at Hitachi Seaside Park from mid to late October. Visiting Japan in November If you wish to see the peak of autumn leaves on the mainland of Japan, visiting Japan in November is your best bet. From November to early December, autumn foliage can be seen in Tokyo, Kyoto, Nara, Osaka, Shikoku, Hiroshima, and Kyushu. November is regarded as the best time to visit Japan. The weather is mild and cool, traveling tends to be quieter, and spectacular autumn colors can be seen at the must-see sites of Japan.

Tour was great in many respects - some of the accommodation, for example, was excellent, and the use of the bullet trains was a fab experience. 10 Days Splendid Japan Deluxe with Nagoya(4 star hotels)

Let me begin by saying Stunning Tours really lived up to their name. Coming out of Covid and with airlines canceling flights all the time, I was a little worried. But Stunning Tours kept me well updated on my itinerary and assured me everything is on schedule. Once arrived in Japan, we were greeted by their super friendly local guides. They are extremely knowledgeable about all the historical monuments and attractions we visited, and worked tirelessly to make sure every guest enjoyed the trip. That kind of attention to detail and hospitality are amazing. And they can be funny too. The 10 days flied by fast, but we had a wonderful time and great memories. Thanks Stunning Tours and will definitely be back in the future.

Essential Japan Tour

Essential Japan

When I booked this tour, TourRadar advertised that it was conducted in English. This was not the case : I was booked onto the Europamundo tour, along with a coach full of lovely Spanish people, half a dozen Americans and a tour guide, Dafyd Solanes, whose English was simpy not up to the task. As a consequence, we would receive a thirty minute talk in spanish, with lots of banter, followed by a two or three sentence english version. In addition, you advertised the tour as suitable for 2 to 99 year olds. I am 73, so thought I would be ok, but the pace set was far faster than I could sustain, and one of the scheduled stops involved a visit to a beautiful pagoda which was approached by 400 steps : many people much younger than I gave up without reaching the top. The visit to a traditional Ryokan was to be a highlight for me, but I had notified you at the time of booking that I would require a western style bed. I was given a beautiful japanese style room with a tatami, which left me the following day with back and shoulder pain. This was particularly galling as we had dropped off several other guests at a western style hotel before moving on to the ryokan. The hotels, travel and general comfort were excellent, but it seems that where Europamundo had taken charge, none of my requests were acted upon. I am afraid your partner in this enterprise does not share your commitment to quality and customer service

Having both guided tours and lots of free time made for a nicely balanced tour where our guide, Toshimi, a very knowledgeable local, would show us parts of Japan and tell us of their significance historically and socially, and also tell us how and where to appreciate Japan during our free time. Our guide loves Japan's history and it was very interesting talking to him about Japan. He also made lots of great recommendations on places to see and eat at, and overall made the whole tour experience very convenient, fun, and informative.
Amazing tour. Kayoko was awesome and we got to see so much of Japan. Only wish there was a change on the 10 person minimum for the optional tours. We had a smaller group so getting 10 people for things sometimes was tough.
An excellently organised tour, plenty is packed in and most things are included in the overall price making it really good value. Optional extras weren’t pushed on me which is something I really liked but I was given plenty of notice of extras so that I could get involved if I wanted to. Trip highlights were visiting the fish market and then taking part in the sushi making class, group dinner at the guesthouse, karaoke, and the boat trip by Monkey Mountain. My tour guide, Alyssa, was friendly, helpful, and enthusiastic - she made sure that the trip was hassle free and lots of fun. I’ll be looking at these trips again, completely takes the stress out of planning and ensures a group of people to get to know and enjoy the trip with.

Japan Fall Foliage Cruises & Private Tours: Autumn Leaves

In Japan, colorful leaves ( koyo ) represent autumn as cherry blossoms do spring. Autumn leaf viewing has been a popular activity in Japan for centuries, and today large crowds of travelers flock to koyo spots in both the mountains and the cities. Koyo fronts move south from Hokkaido every year starting in mid-September until they reach lower elevations of central and southern Japan toward the end of November. Some trees remain colorful until early December in Tokyo and Kyoto.

Japan Adventure Club will help you make a great choice on how you'll enjoy the most out of the colorful fall foliage in Japan in 2022, 2023, and 2024.

Fuji. Enjoy the picturesque views of Fuji and Fuji Five Lakes from the Kubota Itchiku Art Museum. Stay at Keio Plaza Tokyo.

Day 4-6:  Kyoto

Day 4 : Take the direct train from Tokyo to Kyoto. In a city founded over a thousand years ago, you'll find cobblestone streets. You'll find that Kyoto isn't just a city steeped in the past, but also a vibrant city with monks, artisans, baristas, and college students working hard towards a bright future. A top attraction in Japan is Kinkakuji Temple, which is covered in real gold leaf and visually stunning no matter what the weather is like. You'll also visit Kintano-tenmangu, which was built to appease the spirit of an angry ghost. Stay at Granvia Kyoto.

Day 5 :  You'll explore Arashiyama today, the western outskirts of Kyoto home to the world-renowned Arashiyama Bamboo Grove and the Nonomiya Shrine, two of Japan's most picturesque sites. Wander through the bamboo groves of Arashiyama, a serene and mystical forest that makes you feel like you're in another world. You will then visit the Nonomiya Shrine where, in ancient times, single imperial princesses would stay to purify themselves before taking up their duties as monarchs. Your next stop will be Tenryuji Temple, Kyoto's largest and most impressive temple and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Stay at Granvia Kyoto.

Day 6 :   On today's tour, you will visit the Todaiji temple, the largest wooden building in the world and home to the Great Buddha. Visit Kasuga Taisha, founded in 768 AD and famous for its hundreds of bronze and stone lanterns donated by worshipers. Explore Nara Park, nicknamed Deer Park for its 1,000 tame deer. On your way back from Nara, you'll visit Fushimi Inari Shrine, one of Japan's most iconic sites, known for its 10,000 red tori gates that form a path up the mountain behind the temple.

Day 7-9: Osaka

Day 7 :   The Osaka transit system will allow you to experience local culture by yourself. As the gastronomic capital of Japan, you'll be able to experience the splendors of Osaka's casual cuisine, visiting the nation's most famous restaurant district: Dotonbori. Stay at the Marriott Miyako Hotel.

Day 8 :  We will start our day at Himeji Castle, also known as the White Heron Castle. It is one of Japan's original twelve castles, as most of the others have been destroyed by war or natural disasters. As a UNESCO world heritage site, this Japanese natural treasure is especially beautiful during fall's peak foliage when the leaves transform into a stunning array of reds, oranges, and golds, or during cherry blossom season. Afterward, you'll visit the nearby Kokoen garden, a beautiful traditional Japanese garden with nine different styles. Stay at the Marriott Miyako Hotel.

Meet your tour leader at Sydney International Airport for your evening flight to Tokyo.

Early morning arrival into Tokyo, meet your local guide and transfer to hotel. Early check-in to our hotel, the New Otani. This afternoon visit the extensive, world class chrysanthemum exhibition at Shinjuku Gyoen since 1929. Welcome Dinner tonight.

New Otani Hotel , Tokyo

Rikugien Garden is your destination this morning, a strolling garden laid out in 1695 and restored in the 18th century. Once the residence of powerful Yanagisawa Yoshiyasu, there are 88 stops around the lake, symbolic representations of classical Japanese literature. The rhythm achieved by alternating dark and bright zones, spacious and confined areas, sunlit groves and mysterious forests, produces virtually a musical effect. The massed planting of Japanese maple along the river should set the scene for autumn.

Today our coach takes us to Nikko, an ancient imperial retreat north of Tokyo. On the way, we’ll stop at Omiya Bonsai Village home of some of Japan’s finest Bonsai. Visit the superb Omiya Bonsai Art Museum which houses a stunning collection of ancient bonsai masterpieces, some are 1,000 years old. Later we stop to see the Sacred Way of ancient Cryptomeria Cedar trees before visiting the recently restored original 18th C Kanaya Hotel Samurai House. Check into the historic Nikko Kanaya Hotel for two nights. It is the oldest Japanese resort hotel with more than 100 years of traditions. Dinner included at our hotel tonight.

Kanaya Hotel , Nikko

Sightseeing today includes a walking tour of the nearby Toshogu Shrine, built in 1542 with its ornate Yomeimon Gate. Rinnoji Temple is located on the avenue leading up to the shrine and contains three gigantic gilded wooden images of Buddha. Here Shintoism and Buddhism combine to commemorate the Taiyuin Mausoleum for Iemitsu, third in line of the ruling Tokugawa Shogunate Family. Hear the history behind this sacred region and its traditions.

See the giant cryptomerias over 1000 years old, the Shinkyo Sacred Bridge across the turbulent waters of the Daiya River, and giant bronze and stone lanterns all wrapped in a mountain mist and maples dotted amongst the lush green. The entire site is World Heritage Listed. This afternoon walk through the home and garden of the Tamozawa Imperial Villa, the summer residence of the royal family. The remainder of the day is at leisure to soak in the tranquil atmosphere of this quaint town. Dinner included tonight

Cross the spine of Japan’s main island with forests of Japanese Cryptomeria cedar, Chamaecyparis cypress trees and millions of different maples in stunning autumn colour. Take a short Shinkansen (Bullet Train) to Kanazawa the capital of the Ishikawa Prefecture and once a feudal castle town, home to the powerful feudal Maeda clan. On arrival, we walk the famed Samurai district where their families still live today and visit a Samurai home with a small but exquisite traditional garden.

Nikko Hotel, Kanazawa

Visit Kenroku-en Garden, famous for its mature conifer trees and channel gardens of water iris. Kenroku-en combines the six essential features of true gardens: vastness, symmetry, solemnity, coolness, antiquity and pleasure. Japan’s first water fountain can be seen here surrounded by Japanese maples. This is one of Graham Ross’ favourite gardens in the world. The unique stone lanterns, a symbol of Kanazawa City, are beautifully canopied with delicate maples in autumn colours. Lunch is included today. The remainder of the day is free. Kanazawa is famous for traditional arts & crafts, gold leaf and Kutani – ware porcelain. Graham will direct you to the best shopping areas.

A very different experience commences today as we travel deep into the snow-capped Japanese Alps to visit Shirakawa-go Village nestled in a rural setting reminiscent of old Japan. Listed by UNESCO in 1995 as a World Heritage Site, Shirakawa-go is famous for its steeply thatch-roofed traditional farmhouses called Gassho Zukuri style from over 250 years ago. The architecture, horticulture and cuisine of the region will make this a unique experience of the tour. Overnight stay at a traditional Japanese Ryokan, including a Japanese style dinner. This will be a memorable evening.

Tsujinoya Hananosho , Awazu

Travel to Kyoto by bullet train. On arrival visit Nijo Castle, dating from 1603 and famous for its fortress-like interior and ingenious escape routes of the Tokugawa Shogun. The garden here, Ninomaru Garden, is planted with ancient, beautifully manicured pine trees. A special dinner tonight attended by a Maiko/Geisha and shamisen performance after a walk through the adjacent 16th C. private garden.

Hotel Okura , Kyoto

Visit the Silver Pavilion (Ginkakuji Temple) dating back to 1489. This famous temple and it’s Zen garden, formerly the villa of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimasa, silver in name only, he died before the silver leaf could be applied. See raked and moulded gravel mounds that represent sea and mountains. Designed in the ‘Zen’ style, this serene garden features ancient pines, ginkgos, maples and hundreds of other autumn trees. At Hakusasonso witness a traditional Japanese Tea Ceremony performed in the beautiful garden built in 1915. This private garden is a showcase of Japanese plants and Chinese statuary. Our Tea Master is a descendant of the famous artist Kansetsu Hashimoto who created this villa garden and museum. A traditional Japanese lunch is included today.

Early morning visit to Kinkakuji Temple (Golden Pavilion) built in 1397 by Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, which he used for entertaining, contemplation and to view the expansive landscape. This three-tiered pavilion glows with a covering of 18-carat gold leaf. Admire the perfect reflection on the broad Mirror Lake before it. See the Shogun’s bonsai that become a garden masterpiece.

Ryoanji Temple is our next stop, renowned throughout the world as Japan’s finest example of a rock and sand garden (seki-taki). Take time here to reflect on the meaning of these raked patterns and enigmatic placement of rocks. It is also home of the stone water-basin, Tsukubai, engraved with famous Zen script. The outer is planted with hundreds of exquisite maples and rare Japanese Cedar tree varieties.

Dinner included tonight at a local Shabu Shabu restaurant.

Travel to Nagoya by bullet train. Visit the iconic Nagoya Castle and spectacular chrysanthemum exhibition. A special treat today to walk through the recently restored, magnificent Hommaru Palace and see the lavish rooms. Precision timber joinery and artworks in the palace are breathtaking. Master craftspeople went to great lengths to recreate the opulence of the residence. In the afternoon visit Nabana No Sato in Mie prefecture. This botanical theme park is a new concept in world-class show gardens covering 30 hectares with beds filled with thousands of flowers including cosmos, roses and dahlias and huge glasshouses overflowing with tuberous begonias and more hanging baskets than you could count. Time this evening to experience the 8.5 million LED light show, voted Japan’s best illumination event.

Dinner included tonight.

Marriott Hotel , Nagoya

The Shinkansen to Tokyo this morning, passing Mt Fuji. After a guided city tour, check back into the New Otani Hotel.

Farewell dinner tonight at the hotel.

Autumn Colors: A Guide to Visiting Japan in Fall

Fall is a wonderful time to be in Japan. In my book, autumn in Japan outshines spring (and cherry blossom season ) for its many delights.

Autumn in Japan is one of the country’s most beautiful seasons, most would agree. As in other temperate regions of the northern hemisphere, the fall season lasts roughly from mid September, through October and November, and into early December. Temperatures are cool but mild, ranging from about 45 Fahrenheit (7 Celsius) in the evening in late autumn, to as high as 75 F (24 C) on warm September days.

As summer gives way to autumn, the weather gets cooler and the leaves begin to change, creating breathtaking vistas of vibrant red, orange, and yellow leaves in the country’s many forests.

The falling temperatures signal the return of comforting fall flavours. Think chestnuts and freshly harvested rice, fragrant pine mushroom broth, oily grilled Pacific mackerel, pumpkin soup, and sweet persimmons. ( Hungry? Read more about Japanese cuisine . )

Autumn also brings orange osmanthus, blood-red spider lilies, and chrysanthemums in their delicate pastel glory. And after the heat and humidity of summer, a dip in the onsen at a traditional ryokan suddenly becomes a warming respite from the bracing chill of autumn air.

Of course, one of the best parts of fall in Japan is the colours. Naturally, this means engaging in the ultimate autumn pastime — momiji-gari (also known as koyo ).

Autumn leaves in Nikko, Japan

Momiji-gari literally means “hunting red leaves,” which is the main draw for many visitors to Japan in autumn. It derives from momiji (red leaves, or maple tree), and kari (hunting).

In practice, momiji-gari and koyo do not refer exclusively to maple leaves. Rather, they’re catch-all terms for “leaf peeping,” or viewing the fall colours. Think entire mountains enveloped in swathes of red, orange, and gold; an avenue of golden ginkgo trees leading to a shrine; starry red and yellow maple leaves blanketing a carpet of moss.

Because of how beautiful Japan is at this time of year — not to mention the relatively pleasant temperatures — fall has become a peak travel season in Japan. The good news is that, despite its popularity, the crowds in autumn haven’t quite reached the heights of those during sakura (cherry blossom) season.

As such, if your dates are totally flexible and you have to choose one or the other, you may want to lean toward fall. On the other hand, it’s also worth considering another month or season altogether, as Japan is worth visiting at any time of year. If you’re not sure when to visit, see our guide on the seasons and best times of year to travel to Japan .

When to See Fall Colors in Japan

Compared to spring and its ephemeral cherry blossoms, fall is refreshingly forgiving. While the sakura are very unpredictable, there’s a relatively long grace period for autumn in Japan. This makes planning around autumn colours a slightly easier process – especially if you’re open to broadening your scope with regard to travel destinations.

Much like the sakura zensen , tracking the  koyo zensen — the progress of the autumn colours across the country — is an annual routine in Japan. The leaves follow a wave of colour beginning from the north (Hokkaido) and working its way down south to Kyushu and Okinawa. Unlike the cherry blossoms, which occur rather quickly, the koyo zensen has a much more leisurely pace, lasting for a period of around 50 days or so.

To the surprise of many travelers, September is actually a little too early for fall colours in places like Tokyo and Kyoto. Unlike England or the East Coast of the United States, September in these parts of Japan is basically still late summer, with nary a hint of dying leaves anywhere.

Red maple leaves in Inabu, Aichi Prefecture, Japan

Even early to mid-October is usually too early. The end of October onward is when the colours typically start to turn, peaking around the middle of November. In Kyoto itself, the colours can sometimes linger as late as the end of November, though they’ll usually be past their peak.

The timing varies greatly depending on geography and altitude, and in mountainous areas the leaves typically turn a bit sooner. Similarly, if you’re willing to travel to more off-the-beaten-path places in Japan , you can often coordinate your travels to overlap with earlier and later fall colours.

For example, mid-September to early October sees some gorgeous fall foliage in the northern island of Hokkaido, and in the lovely and remote Tohoku region you’ll see beautiful autumn colours from mid-October onward. Conversely, the much milder southwestern island of Kyushu tends to peak later, around the end of November.

Naturally, exact timings can vary from year to year, and as we all know, Mother Nature is wonderfully unpredictable!

Fall Foliage: Trees and Other Japanese Plants to See in Autumn

Thanks to the abundance of deciduous trees all over Japan, fall transforms the landscape with dizzying palettes of red, yellow, and brown.

Japanese maples, wax trees, rowan, burning bush, and Japanese sumac turn red; the leaves of linden-leaved maples, ginkgo, Japanese elms, and poplars turn golden and yellow; and birches, chestnuts, oaks, and beeches shed leaves in shades of brown.

Aside from these trees, there are also the aki no nanakusa , or the seven representative flowers and grasses of autumn that herald the season’s arrival. Taken from a verse in the Manyoshu , the oldest existing anthology of Japanese poetry, the flowers are bush clover, Japanese pampas grass, arrowroot, dianthus, Patrinia scabiosaefolia , thoroughwort, and bellflower.

These flowers often appear throughout Japanese literature with romantic, wistful overtones. Often invoked in tandem with specific characters or events (e.g., the ending of relationships), they evoke deep beauty coloured by a hint of sadness — much like autumn and the passing of time.

Out of all the autumn flowers, pampas grass — also known as eulalia, susuki , or  obana — may be the most visually dramatic, especially in the late evening light. You might see them in majestic silvery clumps growing wild along mountain trails, in fields glimpsed from a train window, or on a cliff facing the sea.

The Sengokuhara Susuki Kusahara in Hakone , a huge field covered with pampas grass, is mesmerising in autumn — gold and silver waving and glimmering in the sunlight ( Sting would love it).

The Best Places to See Autumn Leaves in Japan

Here are some of the most beautiful places to experience the autumn leaves in Tokyo, Kyoto, and beyond. For even more floral inspiration, see our guide to Japan’s best gardens .

Tokyo’s Best Places to See Autumn Leaves

It might feel like a neon-spiked concrete jungle on steroids at times, but Tokyo — with its many parks and gardens — is home to some truly lovely places to enjoy the autumn colours.

Yoyogi Park

Located right next to Shibuya, Omotesando, and Harajuku, Yoyogi Park is an ideal autumn leaves stop in between shopping in and exploring the surrounding neighborhoods. You’ll want to visit the southern section between Yoyogi-Koen Station and Harajuku Station, which is home to many ginkgo and maple trees.

Icho Namiki

An avenue of ginkgo trees, Icho Namiki is one of Tokyo’s most iconic autumn leaves spots. The towering trees are pruned into gorgeous, gigantic teardrop shapes, making them seem like an avenue of gloriously golden torches.

Eikando Temple in Kyoto, Japan, is a particularly famous place to see the fall colors

Famous for its weeping cherry tree in spring, autumn sees Rikugien’s lovely Japanese landscape garden lit up in late November, making the maples seem like incandescent fires in the night. The garden is large enough to stroll around, and there’s a teahouse where you can rest and enjoy the small waterfall nearby.

Shinjuku Gyoen

This sprawling park in the heart of Shinjuku is amazing in any season. With a variety of gardens, groves, and trees, it is a solid choice for enjoying some autumn colours. If the weather is warm enough, bring lunch and have a picnic in the park.

Koishikawa Korakuen

Visitors love this stunning Japanese garden in the middle of Tokyo (not far from the Tokyo Dome) for the glorious crimson and red maples reflected in the central pond. It is best visited at opening time before the crowds hit.

This mountain with a temple at the top is popular with Tokyo dwellers for weekend hikes (one of the best day hikes near Tokyo ) — and especially so in autumn for the beautiful scenery. There are six routes of varying difficulties leading up the mountain, making it a great option for hikers of all abilities. Mt. Takao is a mere 50-minute train ride away from Shinjuku Station.

Usui Lake Annaka Gunma Japan

Another favourite with Tokyo locals for the autumn colours is Okutama. If you’re not keen on climbing Mt. Mitake, the Hatonosu Valley trail is an easy, gentle walk that takes you past a gorgeous river and through some stunning forests.

Kyoto’s Best Places to See Autumn Leaves

Thanks to its popularity, Kyoto can seem overwhelming at times. Many of the popular temples, like Kiyomizu-dera, are packed with visitors in any season, so a good rule of thumb is to wake up early and do your best to beat the crowds. If you’re traveling to Kyoto, don’t miss our post on Kyoto’s best temples , both on and off the beaten path.

This temple near the charming neighbourhood of Nishijin is receiving more attention these days, not least because of Izusen , its  shojin ryori  (Buddhist cuisine) — an excellent choice for vegetarian and vegan diners. While most of the sub-temples are worth visiting, Koto-in is particularly magnificent; its entrance is essentially a maple leaf tunnel, and it’s glorious at the peak of autumn.

A favorite with photographers in autumn for its stunning landscape garden dotted with maple trees, this UNESCO World Heritage Site in the very popular Arashiyama district also houses Shigetsu, an excellent shojin ryori restaurant recommended by the Bib Gourmand guide .

Given its sprawling grounds and lush maple canopies, Daigo-ji is one of the best out there when it comes to autumn leaves. Popular with photographers, it’s definitely worth the half-hour trek from Kyoto Station.

Remember that iconic scene in Lost in Translation  where Scarlett Johansson walks up the steps of a temple at the peak of autumn? This is where that scene took place. It also happens to be one of writer Pico Iyer’s favorite places in Japan .

Fewer Clients, Richer Experiences

We live and breathe Japan, and want you to experience the Japan we know and love. If you’re as obsessed with the details as we are, chances are we will be a good fit.

Get Started

Conveniently located a few minutes’ walk from Nanzen-ji, Eikando is a prime autumn colours spot in the city. November sees the temple putting on special illuminations at night that are quite spectacular. Enjoy your autumn leaf viewing with a spot of whipped matcha.

Kyoto Botanical Gardens

This is a severely underrated destination in any season. With its huge diversity of plants and trees, you’ll see spectacular autumn colours when the right time comes, but also enough flowers to fill your dreams for days.

Nikko's Lake Chuzenji and Mount Nantai in fall

The Best Places to See Autumn Leaves Elsewhere in Japan

Unsurprisingly, some of the best places for fall colours are outside of the cities. In addition to the places below, you’ll find lovely fall foliage in most of Japan’s best destinations .

Yoro Valley, Chiba

Just outside of Tokyo, Chiba is a rather overlooked prefecture for tourists, due to its association with Tokyo Disney (including the unique DisneySea), Narita Airport, and not much else. But in addition to some nice beaches, it also has some great destinations, like Yoro Valley. This valley is home to eight hiking trails, all great for viewing autumn leaves, and perfectly doable as a day trip from Tokyo.

Most visitors to Nikko focus on Nikko proper, but strap on your hiking boots and venture a little farther and deeper into the mountains. Lake Chuzenji, Senjogahara Marsh, and Akechidaira Plateau are all home to beautiful autumn colours and lovely walking courses.

Ibaraki is another overlooked destination. Its proximity to Tokyo — around 2.5 hours by train — means it’s great for building into itineraries leading northward. Fukuroda Falls, Mt. Yamizo, Mt. Nantai, and Okukuji Valley are all splendid places for autumn colours, with the added bonus of relatively few international travelers.

Daisetsuzan National Park, Hokkaido

Japan’s autumn leaves “front” starts here, on Japan’s northern island, in mid-September. Parts of the island with higher elevations, such as Kogen Onsen, Mt. Akan, and Mt. Asahidake, are all fantastic places to hike through from mid- to late September for the autumn colours. As some of the trails can be quite challenging, this is for more energetic and experienced hikers.

This national park, located around 100 kilometers north of Tokyo, is an ideal destination for walkers and hikers. Think trails snaking through mountains and marshland. From late September onward, visitors flock here to enjoy the spectacle of a vast, grass-covered marshland stained reddish-yellow.

Mt. Zao, Yamagata

While most famous for its “snow monsters” in winter, the slopes of Mt. Zao are stained all shades of red and crimson in autumn. The Zao Ropeway, a cable car leading to the summit, will net you some truly memorable aerial views.

Tokuyama Dam Ibigawa Gifu Japan

How to Momiji-gari Japanese-style

Now that you know where to go to see beautiful autumn leaves in Japan, here are some tips on how to leaf peep like a local.

Go for a Walk or Hike

It goes without saying that immersing yourself in nature is one of the best ways to enjoy the autumn colours up close, and you’ll also see a far greater variety of plants than you might in a more manicured city garden. Even if you can’t head out to a mountain, explore on foot and you’ll also get a great workout to boot.

The beauty of autumn is in the details, and it is far more rewarding to thoroughly explore a place over a few days than to rush through in a day. Look closely. Take some time to stare at the delicate tracery of lines on a mottled cherry blossom leaf, or the way maple leaves rest on star-shaped moss. Find the crunchiest leaves and step on them before someone sweeps them up. Pick up gingko leaves and toss a handful of gold in the air. Most importantly, don’t worry about rushing to tick places off a mile-long list. You’ll have much more fun (and remember where you took your photographs) this way.

Take the Slow Train

With a limited amount of time in Japan, it can be tempting to zip through places and hop from destination to destination. But taking a slow train through the countryside to watch the changing colours and bucolic scenery is a beautiful experience in and of itself. Japan also has several luxury trains that snake through particularly scenic routes over the course of a few days. One example is the JR East Shiki-Shima train.

Drive Through the Mountains

Japan has an excellent public rail and bus system, but many remote places are inaccessible without a car. Think national parks and mountaintop temples or traditional ryokans . If you’re keen on the path less traveled, take your international driving license with you and rent a car.

When to Begin Planning Your Autumn Trip to Japan

You’re sold on autumn in Japan, and now you’re ready to start planning.

The good news: You have a little more flexibility compared to cherry blossom season in that you’ll have a wider range of dates to play with.

Still, you should start planning at least half a year to a year in advance, particularly if you’re including major destinations like Tokyo and Kyoto in your itinerary.

As in cherry blossom season, hotels and ryokans charge premium prices for rooms, which tend to get snapped up as soon as they’re available.

A good rule of thumb is to decide on your dates, and then plan your itinerary for the autumn colours based on the timeframe — see above for when to experience momiji-gari in different parts of Japan.

That being said, planning will ultimately only go so far. The rest is up to the weather and Lady Luck. But don’t fret — you’re sure to be charmed by Japan nonetheless !

DATE: Nov 29th, 2024  Kyoto

Travel from Takamatsu to Kyoto by shinkansen.

Once we arrive in Kyoto we will enjoy a walk through the streets of Gion (Geisha District), and visit Yasaka Shrine and Kiyomizu-dera Temple.

We start our half day tour of Kyoto by taking a stroll through the beautiful streets of Gion, Kyoto's world famous Geisha District. If we are lucky we might even get to see a real geisha as we explore the streets of this historic district. Not far from Gion is Yasaka Shrine, one of Kyoto's most famous Shinto shrines. This shrine is well known for hosting one of Japan's most famous festivals, the Gion Matsuri. This festival is held every year in July, and dates back over a thousand years. From Yasaka Shrine we will then walk through the back streets of Kyoto up to Kiyomizu-dera Temple. On the way we will pass through the preserved districts of "Ninen-zaka" and "Sannen-zaka", two of Kyoto's most attractive streets. Kiyomizu-dera Temple (literally Pure Water Temple) was built without the use of nails in 780 A.D. and is one of the most celebrated Buddhist temples in all of Japan.

The Golden Pavilion (Kinkaku-ji) in Kyoto, Japan

DATE: Nov 30th, 2024  Kyoto

Spend the day taking in the sights of this traditional city.

We will visit the beautiful Kinkaku-ji Temple (Golden Pavilion), Ryoanji Zen Garden, and Arashiyama, where we will walk through the picturesque Bamboo Grove.

The Golden Pavilion, otherwise known as "Kinkaku-ji", is one of the most famous and most recognizable buildings in all of Japan. Formally the retirement villa of the shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, it is now a magnificent Zen Temple completely covered in gold leaf.

Our next stop is the Ryoanji Zen Garden, which is located in northwest Kyoto and is widely considered to be the most famous rock garden in Japan. This historic site was converted into a Zen temple in 1450 A.D., and consists of

a wonderful rock garden made up of 15 rocks on patches of moss. One of the most interesting things about the design of this thought provoking Zen garden is that no matter which angle you view it from, at least one of the

15 rocks is not visible.

We finish the day by traveling out to Arashiyama, widely considered to be the second-most famous sightseeing district in Kyoto. The main attraction here is the picturesque Arashiyama bamboo grove. It is one of Kyoto’s top sights, and for good reason. Standing amid the soaring stalks of bamboo is like being in another world.

fushimi-inari-shrine-kyoto.jpg

DATE: Dec 1st, 2024  Hakone

This morning we will visit Fushimi-Inari Shrine, one of the most iconic places in Kyoto. It is famous for its thousands of orange colored torii gates that straddle a network of trails behind the main shrine itself. The trails lead to the top of Mount Inari, which stands at 233 meters and belongs to the shrine grounds. Although most tourists are attracted to the shrine by the beautiful scenery, Fushimi-Inari Shrine is actually the most important of several thousands of shrines dedicated to Inari, the Shinto god of rice. Foxes are thought to be Inari's messengers, resulting in many fox statues throughout the shrine grounds. Fushimi-Inari Shrine also has ancient origins, predating the capital's move to Kyoto in 794 A.D.

After lunch we will travel from Kyoto to Hakone by shinkansen and private vehicle.

Once we arrive in the famous hot spring town of Hakone, we will make our way directly to our accommodation. Tonight we will enjoy a relaxing stay at a traditional hot spring inn (ryokan).

Hakone is a small hot spring town located approximately 90 minutes from Tokyo. It has been a popular hot spring destination for centuries, and has also been recognized as one of Japan's three most famous hot spring towns. At night you will have the unique experience of staying at a traditional ryokan (Japanese style inn).

Ryokan are not just places to sleep, they are also a great opportunity to experience traditional Japanese culture, lifestyle, and hospitality. Ryokan are popular with both Japanese and foreign guests because they incorporate elements such as tatami floors, sliding paper doors, futon beds, Japanese style baths, and local cuisine. Ryokan have been part of Japanese culture for more than a thousand years. One of the oldest recorded ryokan, Hoshi Ryokan, was founded in 718 A.D.

At night we will enjoy a delicious Japanese dinner at our ryokan. You can even try wearing a traditional yukata (summer kimono) to dinner like the locals do!

mt-fuji-hakone.jpg

DATE: Dec 2nd, 2024  Tokyo

This morning we will visit beautiful Lake Ashi. Weather permitting you will be able to take in spectacular views of Mt. Fuji with Hakone Shrine's iconic floating torii gate in the foreground. Once we arrive at the southern end of Lake Ashi we will visit Hakone Shrine, the most famous Shinto shrine in Hakone. The original shrine was built at the summit of Mt Hakone in 757 A.D. The shrine was relocated to its current location in 1667 in appreciation of Priest Mangan who is said to have slain a 9-headed dragon that lived at the bottom of Lake Ashi.

After lunch we will travel from Hakone to Tokyo by private vehicle and limited express train.

Once we arrive in Tokyo you will have some free time to relax or explore the largest metropolis in the world in your own way.

Festival floats at the Chichibu Night Festival in Saitama, Japan

DATE: Dec 3rd, 2024  Tokyo

Experience the excitement of the Chichibu Night Festival, one of the largest and most famous festivals in Japan. We will travel to Chichibu on a limited express train, taking in beautiful countryside views on the way.

The Chichibu Night Festival is one of Japan's three biggest float festivals. It is held every year on December 2nd and 3rd in the historic city of Chichibu, which is located about 90 minutes by limited express train from the center of Tokyo. The Chichibu Night Festival is the festival of the Chichibu Shrine, which has a history of more than 2000 years. The festival itself  has been held annually for more than 300 years, and is now listed with UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage. The highlights of the Chichibu Night Festival are the six magnificent floats (important tangible folk-cultural properties) that make their way through the streets of Chichibu. Each float represents a neighbourhood of the city. It takes approximately 150 people to help navigate these 8 to 12 tonne floats, and to create the accompanying Hayashi music. Each float is covered with intricate carvings and gorgeous embroidery with gold threads. The festival culminates when all six floats approach the Dangozaka hill near Chichibu Park.

As the massive floats are pushed and pulled up a 25-degree slope, a spectacular display of winter fireworks explode overhead. Firework displays are usually held during the summer months in Japan, but the crisp, clear winter air makes them look even more spectacular at this time of the year.

A traditional boat in the pond at Rikugien Japanese Garden in Tokyo, Japan

DATE: Dec 4th, 2024  Tokyo

Visit the beautiful Rikugien Japanese Garden, fashionable Harajuku, Meiji Shrine, Yoyogi Park, and experience all the hustle and bustle of Shibuya.

We start our full day tour of Tokyo by visiting the breathtaking Rikugien Japanese Garden, one of Tokyo's largest and most popular gardens. This spacious garden's meandering walking paths and tranquil scenery provide a relaxing escape from the hustle and bustle of the busy city around it. In autumn Rikugien Garden becomes one of the best places in Tokyo to see autumn foliage.

Our next stop is Harajuku, the center for Japan's most extreme teenage cultures and fashion styles. The focal point of Harajuku is undoubtedly Takeshita Street and its side streets. These streets are lined with trendy shops, fashion boutiques, used clothes stores, crepe stands, and restaurants.

In stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of Harajuku is our next destination, Meiji Shrine, one of Tokyo's most famous Shinto shrines. It was built to enshrine the spirits of Emperor Meiji and his wife Empress Shoken in 1920.

Unlike many other flashy places of worship throughout Asia, Meiji Shrine is a quiet, serene place of worship surrounded by a dense forest of over 120,000 trees. Similar to Central Park in New York City, Meiji Shrine and its surrounding grounds are like a natural oasis in the middle of a concrete jungle.

To end our full day tour of Tokyo we will walk through the iconic Yoyogi Park, and then continue on to one of Tokyo's main shopping and entertainment districts, Shibuya. Enjoy walking through possibly the most energetic area of Tokyo, visit the Hachiko Statue, and cross the world famous Scramble Crossing. At night we will enjoy a lovely farewell dinner together at a local izakaya (Japanese-style restaurant/bar).

For traditional Japan Experience accommodations, it is included in the initial tour price.
  • Room size: in Japan, a densely populated country where everything is compact, 3-star luxury hotels are of very good quality but the rooms are often quite narrow (12 to 20m2/129 sq ft to 215 sq ft) depending on the hotel. Please note the size of the single room, between 10 and 16m2 (107sq ft and 172 fq ft). For more comfort, you can choose our luxury 4* accommodation upgrade option. (Example: Tokaido Route).

At the same time, access to the ryokan's non-mixed collective Japanese baths ("onsen") is free, subject to the schedules in force on site. These baths are often not accessible to people with visible tattoos.
  • Names of the hotels : The names given on the site are for information only. In the event of unavailability, an establishment of equivalent standing will be scheduled. Hotels, corresponding to local standards, are given as an indication and may be changed on site for hotels of a similar category.

Your transport :

  • Flights are not included in this tour. Do not hesitate to contact us if you would like to include flights in your order: Flights in economy class with stopovers or direct flights, eco-premium or business air upgrades, provincial departures or abroad: we will be able to advise you.
  • The departure and end dates shown on this page are for your stay in Japan. You will arrive in Japan via Tokyo (Narita or Haneda airports) and will also depart from Tokyo. You will have to leave Europe the day before and land at 14:30 at the latest to be present at your hotel at 18:00 to meet your tour guide. However, the return flight is on the same day due to the time difference. Please do not hesitate to consult us for any uncertainty or need for precision in the choice of international flights.
  • If the flights have been purchased by your care without the intervention of Japan Experience, it is necessary to send us by mail 1 month before your departure your flight information (flight number, airport, date and time of arrival) to allow us 'Organize your welcome and airport transfer.
  • Airport Transfers: The shared limousine bus leaves from the airport and stops either in front of your hotel or at a stop within 1-15 minutes walk from your hotel. Our airport assistant in Tokyo will drive you to the platform to pick up the airport transfer. The transfer to the hotel is unassisted. If you wish to be accompanied from the airport to your hotel reception, please choose the option "Accompanied Airport Transfer". This transfer is done in a shared shuttle or bus, with other clients leaving for the same hotel or a hotel close to yours. These transfers leave between 1.5 and 3 hours after your flight's scheduled arrival and stops can be made before your hotel. If you would like a private, non-stop transfer directly after the actual arrival of your flight, feel free to take the "Private Taxi from the Airport" option. Please note: due to the many changes in flight schedules by the airlines, if the airline notifies you of a change in arrival time less than 72 hours before your departure, and if it exceeds 45 minutes, we cannot guarantee your airport shuttle. You will then have to take a taxi at your own expense, requesting a refund from your airline for abusive schedule changes. The same applies to your return journey: 72 hours before your return flight, we cannot change the shuttle schedule. Similarly, you will have to take a taxi booked with the hotel, at your own expense, with reimbursement procedures with the airline company being the only solution. Japan Experience is not responsible for last minute schedule changes.
  • If a person taking part in the tour is a Japanese national and a resident of Japan, or a foreigner with tax residence in Japan (including a student), then that person is not eligible for the Japan Rail Pass. Please contact us to get the price of the tour without a Japan Rail Pass. They will have to buy the train tickets for the tour directly in Japan. The Kansai Thru Pass is also subject to the same nationality/residency requirements. This is not the case for the Hakone Free pass. If this person is a Japanese citizen but not a resident of Japan, then he/she can benefit from the Japan Rail Pass under certain conditions (see https://www.japan-experience.com/frequently-asked-questions ).
  • Public transport (bus, metro) within the cities, when the ¥1,500 (around £10.30 / 14.54$) already pre-loaded on your public transport card has been used up, is at your expense. You should allow for a transport budget of around £34.39 / 47.57$ for the entire stay (travelling with the group and independently in the evening). In Tokyo and Osaka, some public transport is available free of charge with the Japan Rail Pass included in your tour. The public transport pre-loaded card must be returned to the guide at the end of your stay, except in the case of an individual post-extension organized by Japan Experience.

When you buy, Japan Experience offers you 2 types of protection:

Japan Experience Flex :  Cancellation insurance before departure under conditions.

Japan Experience Protect : Pre-departure cancellation insurance under conditions and on-site assistance under conditions. COVID protection included.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a visa? Do I need vaccinations?

As of October 11, 2022, Japan will open its borders to all Europeans (including the European Union, the United Kingdom and Switzerland) and North Americans (Canada and the United States) without requiring a visa.

Only non-triply vaccinated travelers need a negative PCR test performed within 72 hours prior to departure.

Do I still need a visa to travel to Japan as a tourist?

No, no visa is required for blue countries including all European countries (European Union, United Kingdom and Switzerland included) and North American countries (Canada and United States). List of blue countries: https://www.mofa.go.jp/j_info/visit/visa/short/novisa.html . If you have another nationality, please contact the Japanese embassy in your country of residence to obtain this visa.

Do I still need a PCR or antigen test to go to Japan?

No, if you are triple vaccinated with the vaccines approved by Japan (Pfizer, Moderna, ...exhaustive list here : https://www.mofa.go.jp/ca/fna/page24e_000317.html ) there is no need for any test.

I do not have 3 doses of vaccine or I am not vaccinated against COVID, can I enter Japan?

Proof of Covid vaccines is no longer required for travelers from "blue" countries. Therefore, unvaccinated travelers can enter Japan if they live in blue countries. But a negative PCR test is required at embarkation for travelers who are not vaccinated 3 times.

Is there still a quarantine upon arrival in Japan?

Quarantine and testing on arrival have been eliminated for travelers from blue countries.

Is insurance mandatory?

No, but it is recommended. Japan Experience, as an option of its tours, provides appropriate travel insurance solutions.

What anti-covid measures are still in place in Japan?

The mask must be worn indoors (except in exceptional cases) and in transportation.

What applications should I download before entering Japan?

For tracking the evolution of the coronavirus epidemic, the Japanese government recommends downloading several applications:

MySOS, the health and location tracking app (it will be used to confirm your location, health status and accommodation).

COCOA, the COVID-19 contact confirmation app (this will be used to notify you of possible contact with a COVID-19 positive person).

Tour Overview

2024 Autumn Tour of Japan’s Wild West focuses on the central and the Japan Sea side of Honshu Island . This 12-day journey takes you away from the popular but crowded tourist centers to travel  in Japan’s surprisingly pristine countryside in the gorgeous alpine fall foliage around the Japan Alps.

In 2024, the Autumn Tour of Japan’s Wild West is boosted by a couple of new locations; Toyama City and Fukui Prefecture. In particular the magnificent Eihei-ji Temple complex and Tojinbo Cliff are so culturally significant yet difficult to be accessed by cookie-cutter style tours. They are sure to capture the imagination of any Japan return visitors . This unique Japan tour is suited to people who love the outdoors and authentic experiences.

2024 Autumn Tour of Japan’s Wild West starts in Tokyo and ends in Kyoto . If you are the first-timer to Japan, we recommend you spend extra time before and/or after the tour and explore these most popular cities.

Welcome to Japan! On arrival at  Narita  or  Haneda Airport , you will be met by a Journey to the East guide and escorted to your hotel by an airport shuttle.

Today is an arrival day and no group program is scheduled. Your hotel is located in the middle of  Shinjuku , a very popular Tokyo suburb. Why not take a stroll around  Denkigai  (electric appliance town) or  Shinjuku Gyoen Park , relax and be ready to start the first full day of your  2024 Autumn Tour of Japan's Wild West.

*Many of our guests arrive a day or so early to settle in before the tour starts. We can arrange your additional nights accommodation in the same room as the tour.

Aboard an express train, you head for Matsumoto in Nagano Prefecture , in the heartland of the Japan Alps. During Japan’s feudal period, Matsumoto became an important castle town ruled by a powerful local clan. Today the city is popular for its cosmopolitan atmosphere, galleries, and stunning alpine setting. After arriving Matsumoto, you will visit Japan’s oldest wooden castle  the  impressive   Matsumoto Castle . The castle is and one of the nation’s five castles  designated as national treasures . Still in impeccable original condition, you  will explore its wooden interiors  and climb to the top of its  distinctive black-and-white turret .

In the afternoon, you will transfer to the base of next couple of days, Kamikochi by private minivan.

autumn tours to japan

Kamikochi literally translated as “ where the gods descend ” and it is one of the highlights of this tour. True to its name, the mountain ranges exceeding 3,000 meters above sea-level tower over the perfect Kamikochi alpine plateau. Here you take a most pleasurable walk along boardwalks, which crisscross mossy ponds and streams that reflect the giant mountains that surround them . You will wind through virgin beech forests where the altitude makes them stunning in their coats of many colours.

Stay another night in Kamikochi.

After the experience of pristine nature in Kamikochi , you have a somewhat relaxing, sightseeing day, today.

On a way to Shinano Omachi, the starting point of the Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route you stop at some vantage points to appreciate the great views of the area surrounded by the Japan Alps mountains. Today you will visit Shinano Omachi, a post town along the old highway back in the Edo Era. It is a sleepy town but with a lot of little gems to be discovered. You will have an afternoon guide tour of this town.

Tonight, you will stay at an alpine resort hotel with facilities such as indoor pool and onsen bath. Also enjoy the French style dinner using local ingredients at hotel tonight.

autumn tours to japan

An action packed day today. You travel along the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route across the mountains and valleys by a multi-modal combination of train, bus, cable car, rope-way and even a trolley bus!

Along the way you visit a sacred Shinto mountain, traverse a deep gorge, check out the impressive Kurobe Dam and circuit Japan’s largest non-active crater – the Tateyama caldera .

You will have plenty of opportunity to get out and explore on foot, enjoy the autumn foliage , and take in the high snowy peaks of the mountains around you. This is where the true value of Autumn Tour of Japan's Wild West lies .

Arriving at Toyama City at the other side of the Alpine Route, you have a dinner of Toyama sushi, made with the highly praised fresh seafood of the Japan Sea.

autumn tours to japan

The charming “ Torokko Train ” takes you across the mighty Kurobe Gorge , Japan’s deepest river valley .

Originally the "Torokko Train" was used to transport the workers building the massive Kurobe Dam. The Kurobe Gorge Railway now winds through the spectacular autumn-coloured mountain scenery . You will step out of the vintage carriages and take a walk along the gorge. Have your cameras ready for some stunning shots of mountains covered in their autumn leaves.

Tonight you will stay at a traditional ryokan in Unazaki Onsen town, and enjoy kaiseki banquet and onsen bath.

autumn tours to japan

You start out on a morning walk with your guide to capture the images of autumn sceneries like the main image of this tour looking at Yamabiko Bridge at Unazuki Onsen. After breakfast, you will make your way to another stunning valley, the Shogawa Valley . Upon arrival you cruise the Shogawa River to fully appreciate the enormity of the valley’s autumn foliage.

You then visit a wood-carving centre at Inami where you can watch artisans shape magnificent pieces, applying the traditional art forms that go back to the 17th century. Later on you witness the carving used in the architecture of local temple, Zuisenji Temple . It is breathtakingly beautiful.

Next it is the charming rural village of UNESCO-listed Gokayama, where you stay in one of the village’s original thatched-roof farmhouses . Known as gassho-zukuri (meaning “hands clasped together in prayer”), these steeply-slanted roofed homes were built to withstand the region’s heavy snowfalls .

Tonight, you will have the chance to experience sleeping in the historical building*. Enjoy authentic home-style Japanese hospitality.

*Note these houses have private rooms and a shared bathroom facility.

autumn tours to japan

Having experienced a home-made Japanese style breakfast at minshuku, you transfer to a city of Kanazawa this morning.

Once you arrive at Kanazawa, on the west coast and on the Sea of Japan, you have a guided tour of this city, learning its historical lineage as a wealthy castle town steeped in samurai culture.

This small city offers an impressive range of architectural and cultural attractions. In Kanazawa you will visit Kenrokuen Japanese Gardens , arguably the best Japanese gardens in Japan.

For dinner tonight you will enjoy premium wagyu beef  cooked in front of you at a Teppanyaki restaurant.

autumn tours to japan

Continue exploring culturally rich Kanazawa . Today you will visit;

  • The Nagamachi District , where the region’s daimyo lords and their samurai once resided;
  • Omicho Market and see myriads of local seafood and vegetables, foundation of rich local food culture, and
  • The Higashi Geisha District, a well-preserved area of narrow streets where Kanazawa’s geisha once entertained wealthy patrons in slatted wooden tea houses.

The afternoon and evening have been set aside for you to take yourself exploring in this charming city. You may like to wander the scenic backstreets of Kanazawa or admire some of the many temples and fabulous galleries. Alternatively, you may choose to check out the craft shops selling Kaga-style kimono fabrics and gilded lacquerware or pause at a local sake brewery .

autumn tours to japan

Heading further west on the Japan Sea coast, you reach Fukui Prefecture , where you will witness another wild natural landscapes.

One of the least populated areas of Japan, Fukui is well known for its rugged coastline and the magnificent Eihei-ji Temple . Highlights of today are;

  • The dramatic cliff of Tojinbo , and
  • The vast Eiheiji Temple complex made up of some 70 buildings.

Tonight, you will again sleep at a traditional Japanese ryokan. You will also experience an onsen, a mineral hot springs bath, and a fantastic way to relax.

autumn tours to japan

This morning an express train will sweep you away to Kyoto , that most iconic of cities.

Kyoto is the cultural heart of Japan and the guardian of many of its ancient traditions. Originally made capital in 794, present-day Kyoto offers an endless range of traditional craft shops, refined restaurants, ancient temples and Shinto shrines. Upon arrival in Kyoto, you will have a guided stroll around;

  • Nijo Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage listed site, which display the best autumn colours at the time; and
  • Kinkakuji Golden Pavilion beautifully framed by autumn leaves

Tonight, you have a farewell Japan dinner at an established restaurant, where you will have shabu shabu (wagyu beef hot pot) and a maiko (young geisha) join you for a private performance.

This morning you will check out of your hotel after breakfast and your 2024 Autumn Tour of Japan's Wild West concludes.

You can return to Tokyo by train or air to fly home, or depart from Osaka’s Kansai International Airport .

Perhaps you might like to linger in Japan for a little longer. We will be delighted to plan your personal post-tour extension and to show you another different part of Japan. Please see our Model Extension Itineraries for inspirations!

Note: The cost of an escorted transfer to your departure airport is not included in our Small Group Tours as we found many guests choose to stay in Japan a bit longer, but we will be happy to arrange your transfer to next destination or to exit airport. Please see our FAQ for more details.

autumn tours to japan

Spend a couple of beautiful days admiring the colors of autumn in Fukushima from the comfort of your car. You’ll love zooming around the prefecture and seeing all that autumn has to offer. Have your camera ready to capture some of the best autumn vistas in the prefecture right outside your window.

First, rent a car at Fukushima Station, and make your way down the picturesque Bandai-Azuma Skyline where you’ll see trees and mountainous views on either side. The colors of autumn will surround you like a cozy blanket and you’ll want to take it slow to enjoy these brilliant leaves.

Next, drive the mountain road down to the Bandai-Azuma Lake Line and admire the reflections of the autumnal trees on the surface of the beautiful waters. Visit the fascinating Goshiki-Numa Ponds that change color throughout the day and marvel at the various shades of these volcano-created pools.

Finish your crimson leaf tour of Fukushima at To-no-hetsuri Crags where you can drink up the gorgeous vista of trees against the stony edifice before heading back to Shin-Shirakawa Station and ending your trip.

Here, you can immerse yourself in ancient traditions intertwined with modern innovation while appreciating majestic temples that coexist with bustling city streets. Each season paints a different picturesque landscape, creating something new to admire with every visit.

Given all the unique aspects of this captivating country, deciding on the best time to visit Japan can seem daunting. Fortunately, there are several times that stand out, whether you wish to witness the magical cherry blossom season, visit Tokyo Disney Resort or take advantage of flight and accommodation deals .

Here's everything you need to know about the best times to visit Japan so you can plan a memorable trip based on your priorities.

When to go to Japan for good weather

Japan's weather pattern exhibits four distinct seasons: spring, summer, autumn and winter. Each season offers its own unique attractions and experiences to enjoy.

Spring (March to May) is renowned for its cherry blossoms and comfortable temperatures. With most days hovering between 50 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit, you'll generally find perfect conditions for outdoor activities like hiking and biking.

Japan's summer (June to August) can be hot and humid, often exceeding 80 degrees. Even with the heat, the season draws visitors keen on trekking the country's stunning mountains and lounging on its beaches. Also, summer's long daylight hours allow ample time to get outside and experience all the country has to offer, including numerous vibrant festivals.

Autumn (September to November) brings a refreshing break from summer's humidity. The temperatures range from 50 to 70 degrees, making it possible to comfortably enjoy various outdoor activities. The changing colors of fall foliage , known as koyo ("red leaves" in Japanese) or momiji (the Japanese word for the red-tinted maple leaves in the fall), transform Japan's landscapes into riotous red, orange and gold hues.

Lastly, winter (December to February) can be cold, especially in the northern regions with heavy snowfall. Despite the chilly conditions — average temperatures sit between 40 and 50 degrees — winter illuminations and opportunities for snow sports in Japan's world-class ski resorts make the season a worthwhile time to visit.

While temperatures vary widely from season to season, each time of year brings noteworthy opportunities. The best time to visit for superb weather ultimately depends on your interests and preferences.

Best times to witness Japan's festivals

Japan's festivals, known as matsuri, are colorful, vibrant affairs that provide unique insights into the country's cultural and spiritual life.

One of Japan's most renowned festivals takes place every summer in Kyoto. Gion Matsuri, a monthlong celebration in July, features elaborate processions with traditional yama and hoko floats.

If you're a fan of lively dance, the Awa Odori festival, held every August in Tokushima on Shikoku Island, is a must-see. It's one of Japan's most prominent dance festivals and is part of the Obon season, a Buddhist event that honors the spirits of ancestors. Thousands of dancers fill the streets to perform the characteristic Awa dance while spectators cheer, creating infectious joy and excitement.

As autumn begins, visitors head to Osaka to attend the Kishiwada Danjiri Matsuri. Held annually in Kishiwada, this September festival is among Japan's most thrilling. It is known for its danjiri (ornately decorated wooden floats), which local teams pull through the city streets at incredible speeds. This daring festival is a heart-stopping spectacle that symbolizes community strength and unity.

The Takayama Festival, a charming event in the mountainous city of Takayama, is another one you won't want to miss. Taking place twice a year in October and April, the festival showcases traditional Japanese puppet theater, mikoshi processions and stunning lantern displays.

For winter visits, time your arrival around the Sapporo Snow Festival in February. This spectacular event in Sapporo showcases massive snow and ice sculptures, attracting millions of visitors.

Or, end the year with a flourish by partaking in December's Chichibu Night Festival. A fantastic winter event in Chichibu, just 90 minutes northwest of Tokyo, this celebration is considered one of Japan's top festivals featuring floats — and for a good reason. The dazzling floats adorned with intricate woodwork, detailed tapestries and gilded decorations are a sight to behold. Additionally, the festival includes a spectacular fireworks display, adding a sparkling finale to the year.

Best time to see cherry blossoms in Japan

Japan's cherry blossom (or sakura) season is a treasured time when landscapes transform into romantic canvases splashed with delicate pink hues. Sakura season typically begins in late March and runs through early April, though the exact timing varies from year to year and from south to north.

Popular cherry blossom viewing spots include Ueno Park and Chidorigafuchi in Tokyo, Maruyama Park in Kyoto and Hirosaki Park in Aomori. Hanami parties, where people gather under blooming sakura trees for picnics and celebrations, frequently occur during this time of year and shouldn't be missed.

Flower-watching celebrations happen across Japan from mid-March through early May, though peak bloom dates vary slightly depending on location. For 2024, the earliest peak bloom dates are expected by March 26 in Kochi, with peak bloom estimated for March 30 in Tokyo and April 1 in Kyoto. For estimated dates for more than 1,000 viewing locations, see the Japan Meteorological Corporation's 2024 forecast.

Best time for skiing in Japan

Japan's winter sports scene is internationally recognized thanks to its powdery snow, top-notch facilities and stunning mountain scenery. The onset of snowfall typically occurs in mid-November on the northern island of Hokkaido, resulting in the first ski resorts — usually Niseko, Rusutsu and Kiroro — beginning to open during the third week of that month.

The powder snow, renowned in Japan, is usually abundant from December to February. For those seeking optimal powder conditions, January and February are the recommended months to visit. On Honshu, Japan's main island, Nagano — the host of the 1998 Winter Olympics — also offers excellent skiing opportunities at resorts like Hakuba.

Best times to visit Tokyo Disney Resort

Visiting Tokyo Disney Resort, home of Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea, is a magical experience for all ages, with thrilling rides, enchanting parades and a chance to meet beloved Disney characters.

The parks are open throughout the year, but if you want to avoid the largest crowds, consider visiting between mid-January and mid-March or between mid-September and mid-November. The weather is generally comfortable during these periods, with fewer local and international tourists.

To truly bypass hordes of tourists, avoid visiting during Japan's major holiday periods, such as Golden Week (late April to early May) and Obon (mid-August), as these are peak times for domestic travel and can result in overcrowded conditions.

Cheapest times to visit Japan

For budget-conscious travelers, visiting Japan during the shoulder seasons — late May to early June and late November to early December — can be more economical. These times fall right after Golden Week in spring and autumn's koyo season but before the busy summer and winter holidays. You'll find fewer tourists, so flight prices can be significantly cheaper, costing up to 18% less than the average yearly prices, according to Skyscanner. Hotel rates also historically take a dip in these slower seasons.

In addition to the shoulder seasons, winter is an excellent time to visit when sticking to a tight budget. Japan becomes notably affordable once you steer clear of the holiday season. Moreover, from mid-January to mid-March, you can relish the added benefit of experiencing a less congested environment while out and about.

Bottom line

Ultimately, the best time to visit Japan depends on your interests and the experience you wish to have. Whether you want to view the ephemeral sakura, ski down powdery slopes, immerse yourself in vibrant festivals or witness the magic of Tokyo Disney Resort, Japan always has something to offer.

Each season and festival has its unique charm and allure, inviting you to uncover the multifaceted beauty of this incredible nation.

Portrait of a Happy Woman on the Streets of Tokyo

Cherry-blossom season is one of the best times to visit Japan. Here's how I make the most of it as an American who's lived here for 5 years.

  • Japan is recognized across the world for its stunning cherry blossoms that bloom every spring.
  • The sakura season, which peaks in March and April, attracts crowds of tourists.
  • Some of the best ways to see the flowers are by visiting Hamani festivals or walking along rivers.

Insider Today

There are plenty of iconic symbols that come to mind when I think of Japan — like towering pagodas and red torii gates. But the country has also become famous for its breathtaking cherry blossoms.

I moved from the US to Japan five years ago, and I've watched crowds of tourists flood the country to enjoy the annual sakura, or cherry blossom, season each spring.

It typically lasts from late March into early May, and the views really are priceless.

Here are my top tips for taking in the blooms like a local .

Pay attention to the sakura forecast.

autumn tours to japan

One of the reasons sakura is so beloved is its impermanence.

Cherry blossoms reach full bloom in just a few weeks and only stay in full bloom for about one or two weeks. If rain and strong winds coincide with this, the flowers could be completely gone in just a few days.

In order to witness peak blooming, I recommend referring to the sakura forecast calendar from the Japan Meteorological Corporation.

When American tourists think of spring, they typically picture April or May. But Japanese spring starts in early March.

The most recent forecast, released on February 22, estimates the peak bloom to be around March 21 in Tokyo and most of mainland Japan and between April 4 and 20 in most of northern Japan.

Hanami festivals are a great way to get the full sakura experience.

Hanami festivals are held across Japan to celebrate sakura.

The largest are held in Tokyo's public parks, including Ueno Park, Yoyogi Park, and Shinjuku Gyoen. But there are also smaller festivals in Chidorigafuchi Greenway and Inokashira Park.

Locals typically bring a picnic and spend the entire day relaxing with their friends under the beautiful blossoms.

Most festivals also have special activities or attractions, like the cherry-blossom shrine at Ueno. And at night, the streets light up with glowing pink lanterns, making for another unique experience.

River walks are a great spot to see some of Tokyo's most famous cherry-blossom groves.

If you're looking for a more active experience, I recommend checking out one of the many cherry-blossom groves located along the rivers in Tokyo. You can walk along the water while admiring the blooms.

Nakameguro is one of the most popular and well-known sakura viewing spots, but the crowds can be overwhelming . Get there early and avoid weekends if you don't want to be packed like sardines on the street.

For a quieter spot, check out the Bokutei Sakura Festival along the Sumida River.

Outside of Tokyo, the Ōoka River Promenade in Yokohama and the Shukugawara Moat in Kawasaki are beautiful. Plus, they're less than an hour from Tokyo by train.

There are so many delicious treats available during sakura.

autumn tours to japan

There are plenty of beloved Japanese snacks for sale at cherry-blossom festivals, like candied apples and yakisoba noodles.

Don't forget to bring cash as many booths don't accept cards.

But beyond the festivals, it's really hard to miss all the gentei, or seasonal, items available across the country. The limited-edition experiences, snacks, and goods are everywhere.

Starbucks Japan is especially known for its seasonal Frappuccino . This year's drink, the Hanami Dango Frappuccino, takes its color inspiration from the blossoms.

There's no right way to enjoy the cherry blossoms, but I try to make the most of the season.

autumn tours to japan

As an American expat and a cherry-blossom enthusiast, I can never get enough of sakura.

Even if I'm not going to a festival or river walk, I take the time to enjoy any blooming trees I pass in my neighborhood or along city streets. I'll never miss an opportunity to snap a picture and take a deep breath of the sweet fragrance.

Although it takes a little bit of advanced planning, cherry-blossom season is an incredible time to visit Japan . I highly recommend that every experiences it at least once.

Kyoto bans tourists from major sightseeing district after ‘out of control behaviour’

view of temple in Japan.

With its famous cherry blossom , state of the art vending machines, and high-speed trains, Japan is immensely popular with many tourists – with just over 25 million flocking to see the sights in 2023.

But if you’re thinking of visiting, a travel warning has been issued for those looking to experience one famous tradition.

Starting from April 2024, Japan’s popular Geisha district in Kyoto, once the capital, will close off access to so-called ‘paparazzi tourists’ who harass working geisha.

Also known as geiko or geigi, geisha are female Japanese artists who perform traditional Japanese arts styles and host guests, including dance, music and singing.

Geishas holding red umbrellas during rainy season

Their distinct appearance is characterised by the kimono, traditional hairstyles and oshiroi makeup (the white powder foundation also used by kabuki actors).

Now, Isokazu Ota, Gion’s representative secretary of the South Side District Council, has said that the allies – which host many popular restaurants and teahouses frequented by geisha – will be closed to tourists from next month.

From April, this area will only be open to the working geisha themselves, as well as their clients and residents of the district.

Best things to do in Japan

Looking to travel to Japan? Metro’s Assistant Lifestyle Editor, Lizzie Thomson, recently compiled a two-week travel guide . She suggests:

  • 1-5 days in Tokyo, recommending Shibuja Sky for views of the city, lunch at est (in the Four Seasons Otemachti), Shibuja crossing, Shinjuku National Garden, Drinks at Virtu, Kabuzika Theatre and Tokyo Station.
  • 2 days in Mount Fuji: Five Fuji Lakes, including Lake Kawaguchiko
  • 1-3 days in Kyoto: Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, the ‘Golden Pavilion,’ Fushimi Inari-Taisha, curry udon at Mimikou and okonomiyaki at Kyo Chabana.
  • 2 days in Hiroshima: A-Bomb Dome, Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Museum, Mac Bar and Stevie Wonderland
  • 3-4 days in Osaka and Nara: Dotonbori district, day trip to Nara Park.

Arashiyama,Kyoto

‘I think the foreign tourists waiting for maiko to come out in the alleys of Gion’s photography-prohibited areas know the rules but are ignoring them,’ Mr Ota told CNN.

‘Even if we warn tourists, it is difficult to get through to them at this point.’

In 2019, authorities introduced a fine for tourists who were troubling geishas by photographing them without their consent, or even going as far as to touch their hair and clothes.

River of colors

Travellers were also reported to pull out geisha’s hair ornaments and toss cigarette butts at them.

Peter Macintosh, a Kyoto-based Canadian author and expert on geisha culture, told  SCMP : ‘It’s crazy behaviour. It’s completely out of control.’

So, if you’re imminently heading to Japan in search of Kyoto’s geisha, take note.

Another Japan travel warning was also issued earlier this week for anyone coinciding their trip with cherry blossom season – as climate change is affecting the time they bloom.

Japan travel tips

  • Consider taking a little plastic bag with you to carry your rubbish around, as bins are few and far between
  • Be sure to have Google Translate ready, as not everyone speaks English
  • With this in mind, learn a few simple phrases to help you on your way (think ‘hello’, ‘thank you,’ and ‘I would like’ for restaurant ordering purposes).
