Cruising the World One Port at a Time

Celebrity Edge Cruise Ship Review and Photos

By: Sherry Laskin · Updated On: August 31, 2022

Here’s my Celebrity Edge ship review following the inaugural cruise. Those inaugural cruises, usually only 2 nights, don’t give you much time to explore and review.

But I managed to pack as much into the short cruise and took as many photos as humanly possible. So keep reading for just about all the information you’d need to know what to expect aboard Celebrity Edge.

This is the first ship in Celebrity’s new Edge Class of ships.

Celebrity Edge Review

From the cruise line that coined the phrase “Modern Luxury” over a decade ago, Celebrity Edge is one amazing ship. Its innovations truly push the envelope way to the edge.

Completed in October 2018 in France and now at its homeport of Fort Lauderdale, Celebrity Edge welcomed media and travel agents onboard for a two-night curiosity cruise.

While two nights isn’t much time to fully get to know a new ship, you’d be surprised how much ground you can cover when pressed for time. There were stateroom tours, spa and fitness center tours, and a dine-around tasting at each of the main restaurants.

From the extremely and cleverly designed outer decks to the three-story glittering Grand Plaza, there wasn’t much time to dawdle.

The first of four Edge class cruise ships, Celebrity Edge  really has gone the distance. Not only in innovative concepts from dining options to fitness choices and relaxation but to visual entertainment experiences that are like nothing you’ve ever seen on a cruise ship. Or possibly anywhere.

So let’s start the honest-to-goodness highlights of my Celebrity Edge review with real photos, not artist renderings.

Fast Facts:

Year built:   2018 Weight: 129,000 tons Passengers:   2,908 Crew: 1,320 Staterooms:  1,467 Inside staterooms:   131 Solo staterooms: 16 – none inside Dining venues: 27

Public Rooms and Spaces

The first thing that hits you when you begin walking around is the Grand Plaza. An open, three-story venue with the key meeting place on the ship, the Martini Bar. There’s also Café al Bacio and the Grand Plaza Café.

Celebrity Edge Grand Atrium

There are also several upscale shops including Tiffany’s, Coach and an Apple store. Celebrity Cruises is an authorized Apple reseller.

Celebrity Edge Staterooms

As you might imagine, there are dozens of stateroom categories, configurations and choices. I counted 20 categories ranging from the Iconic Suite at 1,892 sq. ft to the Edge Stateroom with Infinite Veranda (probably will be the most popular for a while) and inside staterooms, of which there are only 12.

There are a total of 25 wheelchair accessible staterooms, including two Sky Suites, eight with the Infinite veranda and three deluxe inside staterooms.

Here’s my “Edge Stateroom with Infinite Veranda:

the edge cruise ship video

Two things I learned about the Infinite Veranda window:

1. It’s ultimately controlled by someone on the bridge (so if it’s bad weather, someone will lock it closed)

2. I took this photo when my window finally decided to work. It malfunctioned (or was controlled on the bridge) for most of my two-day cruise. It was like being in an oceanview stateroom with a fixed-closed window almost the entire time.

Celebrity Edge Review – Dining Options

Fine Cut Steakhouse Le Grand Bistro Le Petit Chef & Friends Eden Restaurant Raw on 5 Magic Carpet – an outdoor extension of Raw on 5 with a separate menu Dinner on the Edge – Dine at the top of the ship on the Magic Carpet when in port. Reservations taken only when onboard.

Complimentary dining:

Main dining rooms:  Normandie, Tuscan, Cyprus, Cosmopolitan Spa Café Eden Café Oceanview Café – the Lido Buffet Mast Grill Rooftop Garden Grill

For Suite and Aqua Class Guests:

Bars and Lounges

Aside from the Martini Bar in the Grand Atrium pictured above, there are nine more bars and lounges scattered around the ship. Another Celebrity carry-over is my favorite…the Sunset Bar, located where else but at the very aft of the ship.

For relaxing and simply doing nothing, Celebrity has you covered.

Parting Thoughts

This is just a preview of what you can expect on Celebrity Edge cruise ship. Celebrity spared no expense to create an almost fantasy-like cruise experience for guests over 21-years.

Families with small children will find Celebrity’s Camp at Sea excels at keeping kids entertained. Activities range from S.T.E.M. experiments and demonstrations to culinary creating and arts and crafts.

Staterooms are very large and appear even more so because of the sleek furniture, pale colors and minimalist design. I wasn’t all too comfy with the mattress, though. Maybe it starts out extra extra firm to last through several years of use.

Overall, I really liked my stateroom, except for my Infinite Verandah window not working 80% of the time.

It’s always hard to get a feel for a new ship with only two days to experience what others spend a week investigating.

For example, the traffic flow at Oceanview Café was well-designed and shouldn’t get too crazy at feeding times. Corridors seemed wider than usual, too. The ship’s designers did a fantastic job with guest-to-space ratio.

There are only two elevator banks, forward and aft. At first I thought one more bank of elevators in the middle of the ship would have been a good idea. However, these elevators are enormous! They’re fast, easy to know which buttons to press and six elevators in each bank.

Celebrity Edge is Best For:

The first guest demographic that comes to mind is the 35-50 age group. It’s really such a cool ship, though, that unless you hate avant-garde concepts or 21st century technology, just about anyone will be wide-eyed at what they find onboard.

You won’t find a low-key classical string quartet but if you venture into Eden, you’ll experience trippy, other-worldly performance art.

the edge cruise ship video

If you think you’ve seen and done it all, don’t mind cruising with 2,900 other guests and like to spend days at sea on deck in the open air, Celebrity Edge might be the best choice for your next cruise. It’s totally unique.

Please pin and share with others!

Hi CM, Thank you for your lovely comment. Cruise lines get higher revenue for balcony staterooms so the less inside, the more they can charge. It’s all about economics, right? Inside staterooms are nice and cozy for sleeping, for sure. Happy cruising, Sherry

This is a really thorough review, thanks for writing it! I really enjoyed it. I’m most shocked at the lack of inside staterooms. I’m a big fan of insides.

The Celebrity Edge Cruise Ship

the edge cruise ship video

Celebrity Cruises launched its newest ship, the Celebrity Edge , in December 2018 and bookings are now open for guests who want to be among the first to sail on her. It has been over 10 years since Celebrity launched a new class of ships. That class, the Celebrity Solstice Class, features five of the most gorgeous cruise ships afloat.

Here are some facts about the Celebrity Edge:

  • 2,918 guests double occupancy, 3,373 guests total
  • 1,467 cabins and suites
  • 14 passenger decks
  • 1,004 feet long
  • 128 feet wide
  • 22 knots cruising speed
  • 129,500 gross register tonnage (GRT)

Celebrity Edge Magic Carpet

The most-talked about new feature is the Celebrity Edge Magic Carpet . Connected to the starboard side of the cruise ship, the tennis-court-sized Magic Carpet serves multiple purposes as it moves up and down the side of the ship. It's not an elevator, so guests can't "ride" on it, but when it's locked onto deck 2, it serves as a place to board the tenders ( Edge Launches ) and provides access to the  Destination Gateway .

When the Magic Carpet is locked on deck 5, it offers al fresco casual dining to the guests, and when locked on deck 14, it provides an extension to the main pool area, offering drinks, live music, and terrific views of the sea below. The Magic Carpet glides all the way up to deck 16, where it transforms into a specialty restaurant aptly named, "Dinner on the Edge". Dining under the stars is always magical, and the Magic Carpet delivers.

Resort Deck

Large cruise ships are much like a resort, and the Celebrity Edge even has a Resort Deck , complete with outdoor swimming pool, sea view cabanas, Rooftop Garden, 400-yard jogging track, and an adults-only Solarium. One difference about the outdoor pool deck on the Celebrity Edge is that the focus is on the sea or the port of call rather than the pool. The cabanas, seen on the right side of the image above, face the sea and guests sitting by the pool can see it easily. One of the two 22-foot-tall martini glass-shaped hot tubs can be seen on the left side of the pool.

Cabanas at Night

Next to the main swimming pool, the Celebrity Edge cruise ship features six cabanas that can be rented. Each cabana holds 4 to 6 people and provides great views of the sea by day or night.

Rooftop Garden

The Celebrity Solstice -Class cruise ships have their rooftop lawn clubs, and the Celebrity Edge has a Rooftop Garden. This huge garden even has its own horticulturist, and guests will love sitting outdoors under the sun or under the stars. They can also participate in games and other activities during the day. The Rooftop Garden has its own casual grill and guests can also dine and watch movies in the evening with Celebrity's "A Taste of Film" concept.

The Solarium is a popular adults-only relaxation spot on other Celebrity cruise ships, and past guests will be delighted to know that the concept has been continued on the Celebrity Edge. The large swimming pool is available year-round, and guests will have good views of the sea from its large windows. The popular Juice Bar and Spa Cafe have also been carried over to the new ship.

The Retreat

The Retreat is a new area on the Celebrity Edge that is reserved for suite guests. Twelve percent (176) of the 1,467 staterooms on the new ship are suites, more than doubling the five percent seen on other Celebrity ships.

The Retreat has three suite-only exclusive areas. The Retreat Sundeck has luxury seating, a large swimming pool, and cabanas. Suite guests can have drinks and treats served to them from the exclusive Retreat Pool Bar. With seating for only 190 guests, it feels quite special.

The Retreat Lounge is the second exclusive area for suite guests. It is located one deck below the Retreat Sundeck and is open 24/7. This lounge features a concierge who is available to make specialty dining, spa, or other arrangements on or off the Celebrity Edge. Suite guests have great views from both sides of the Retreat Lounge, so they can enjoy the view while nibbling on complimentary snacks and beverages.

Luminae Restaurant

Luminae at the Retreat is a specialty restaurant exclusively for suite guests on the Celebrity Edge. The restaurant seats 170 guests; is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner; and the menus are designed by Celebrity's own Michelin-starred Chef Cornelius Gallagher.

Iconic Suite

The two Iconic Suites are a new type of accommodation on the Celebrity Edge cruise ship. These suites are over 2,500 square feet (larger than many homes) and have amazing views from their location one deck above the bridge. These suite guests can truthfully say their views are better than the captains. The veranda on each of these suites is especially impressive since it is over 700 square feet, has its own hot tub and cabana, and offers plenty of room to sunbathe or entertain guests.

The Iconic Suites can sleep 2-6 guests, have butler service and access to The Retreat, and the master bath is an impressive 199 square feet.

The two-deck  Edge Villas are also a new type of suites on the Celebrity Edge cruise ship. These six suites have over 900 square feet each and offer amazing views forward from their large verandas. They also have private three-foot-deep plunge pools and easy walk-out access to The Retreat Sundeck. Guests staying in Edge Villas have a butler and access to all the venues of The Retreat.

Penthouse Suite

The two Penthouse Suites on the Celebrity Edge cruise ship have two bedrooms, two baths, and measure 1,578 square feet with a 197 square foot veranda. These suites have large walk-in closets, soaking tubs on the veranda, butler service, and access to The Retreat venues.

The 146 Sky Suites are the smallest suites on the Celebrity Edge, with 398 square feet and a 79 square foot veranda. Although these suites are smaller (and less expensive), guests staying in the Sky Suites have access to The Retreat venues.

One distinct feature of the Sky Suites is the placement of the bed. As seen in the image above, it faces the sea and offers terrific views through the large floor to ceiling glass doors. The Sky Suites also have a window in the bathroom, so daylight can flow through the cabin into the bath. (The window can also be covered.)

Celebrity Edge Cabin with Infinite Veranda

Those who have cruised on new river cruise ships will recognize the veranda design in the 918 Celebrity Edge cabin with Infinite Veranda . Like the river ships, these verandas can be used in all types of weather since they are like a sunroom when the outside window is closed and like a traditional cruise ship balcony cabin when the outside window is open and the door separating the veranda and the rest of the cabin is closed.

These Infinite Veranda cabins measure a generous 243 square feet, the verandas are 42 square feet, and the bathrooms are 30 square feet, which is 10 percent larger than the Solstice-class veranda cabins. Celebrity has doubled the number of drawers in the cabin, which will be appreciated by those who travel with lots of stuff.

Destination Getaway

In addition to adding new common area venues and stateroom accommodations, Celebrity Cruise executives are also focusing on immersing their guests in the ship's destinations. The new Destination Gateway is part of this process.

The Destination Gateway is on deck 2 and is designed to be a welcoming and comfortable transition environment for guests as they get ready to board the Edge Launches. Highlights of the port of call will be featured on large screens, making the wait time enjoyable and educational.

When not being used in the tendering process, Destination Gateway features opportunities for guests to learn more about their ports of call, research shore excursions, learn more about the Celebrity Edge, or shop at Regional Bazaar Trunk Shows.

The ship alternates two, seven-day itineraries—one to the eastern Caribbean and the other to the western Caribbean. These can be booked for a 14-night voyage since they feature different ports of call. With all the "new" on the ship, it might take 14 nights to see and experience it all!

T he six Americans and two Australian passengers who were stranded on an African island when a Norwegian Cruise Line ship sailed off without them have now returned to the vessel to continue their African voyage, as the cruise line revealed the group caused their travel headaches over the past few days by missing their departure time by over an hour.

The eight passengers reboarded the ship making a 20-day journey across Africa on Tuesday morning in Dakar, Senegal, a spokesperson for Norwegian confirmed to The Post.

The crew had to race through seven different countries in 48 hours to meet the ship in Senegal on Tuesday.

But by the time South Carolina couple Jill and Jay Campbell arrived in the country, they said they weren’t sure whether they would even want to get back on the ship.

“After what we witnessed, we truly believe there is a set of rules or policies that the ship may have followed — they followed those rules too rigidly,” Jill Campbell  told “The Today Show.”

“I really feel that they forgot they are people working in the hospitality industry and that really the safety and wellbeing of their customers should be their first priority,” she added, claiming the crew of the ship had a “basic duty of care that they had forgotten about.”

The eight passengers — including a pregnant woman and an elderly man with a heart condition — claimed they were left behind with no money and without vital medications after the Norwegian Dawn left São Tomé without them.

The Campbells claimed the ship was still anchored off the coast of the Central African island when they showed up on Friday, but the skipper refused to let them board.

A spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line, however, said the group had missed the all-aboard time by more than an hour after taking a private tour of the island.

“When they missed the all-aboard time of 3 p.m. by more than an hour, their passports were left with the local port agent for retrieval when they returned to the port from their private tour (not organized by us), per the protocol,” the  spokesperson   said.

The  Campbells have acknowledged there was “an issue” on their tour of the island, and that the guide “didn’t get us back” to the ship in time on Friday.

“We were like, our time is getting really short, and they were like ‘No problem, we can get you back within an hour,” Jay said, adding that the tour operator contacted the captain to let them know about the delay.

In its statement, the company said that “once the guests did not make it back to the ship at the previously communicated all aboard time, we worked with them and the local port agent to assist with obtaining the necessary visas for them to rejoin the ship at the next available port.”

Attorney James Diamond from TWC Lawyers said it is a “hard and fast rule” that a ship can leave once a final call has been made.

“They pay a lot of money for docking fees, and renting out the space,” he told ”Seven’s Sunrise.”

“They have times that they have to leave, those times are published and unfortunately, I know it’s morally incorrect, but they do have the right to leave,” he said.
