3 Best Spots for Livermore Wine Tasting – from Trolley to Winery to Bar
By: Author Amanda OBrien

It appears that the Napa Valley got all the best marketers in California. Livermore is about the same distance southeast of San Francisco that Napa is northeast but seems to get very little press. Which is quite shocking considering how extremely good their award-winning wines are.
Livermore is an older wine region than both Napa and Sonoma, is the home to California Chardonnay and last year produced the number one in Cabernet in the United States.
So Livermore Valley wine country is a genuine hidden gem – with exceptional wines waiting for you to come and taste them! So here is my guide to Livermore Wine tasting.
- 3 Best Livermore Wine Tasting Options
Table of Contents
1. Livermore Wine Trolley
2. first street wine company livermore, 3. self-guided tour of the livermore valley wineries, my favourite livermore wineries, livermore restaurants, livermore hotels, eating and drinking at the purple orchid, the rooms at the purple orchid livermore, the purple orchid spa, how to get to livermore, who paid for what in this post.
There are essentially three options when it comes to Livermore Wine Tasting. The first is, of course, to visit the Livermore Valley Wineries yourself in your own vehicle. It is also possible to cycle between each winery in Livermore but the distances between the wineries are quite considerable.
The second is the Livermore Wine Trolley. The third is to visit the First Street Wine Bar.
I actually did all three of these options – I know, my dedication to my blog is quite moving! So they’re not mutually exclusive and each offers a different type of experience. And here is a handy Livermore Wineries map to download.

The Livermore Wine Trolley is a guided wineries tour of the region that takes place on a motorized trolley. The wine trolley can be hired for private events, charters etc.
However, this Livermore wine tasting tour is best known for its daily tour to three local Livermore Ca wineries which also includes lunch.
The three wineries change depending on which day you take the Livermore Wine Trolley. A great reason to experience the wine trolley, Livermore, a couple of times! On the day that I was on the trolley, we visited Wente Vineyards, Darcie Kent Vineyards, and Page Mill Wineries.
The main pick up for the Livermore Wine Trolley is at 11 am in downtown Livermore. The tours normally finish by about 3/330pm and end in downtown Livermore.
The Livermore Wine Trolley is a really fun way to visit the wineries of Livermore. The female driver was fantastic – really good fun and knowledgeable. We were immediately told that what happens on the trolley stays on the trolley.
There was an offer to hook up phones to the sound system. And at 11 am there was a bit of a party atmosphere on the trolley!
Each winery Livermore visit lasts about one hour. My first stop was Wente Vineyards . Wente is one of the most well-known wineries of Livermore as it is the home of what is known as the California chardonnay.
The notion of the “butterball” California chardonnay was born at Wente with cuttings from Montpellier in France. Traces of that original Wente cutting can be found in 75% of California Chardonnays!
Wente Vineyards Livermore was founded in 1883 by a German immigrant. Livermore is older than both the Napa Valley and Sonoma. The current owners – the Wente family – purchased the property and vineyards in the 1980s.
And the Wente estate has its own crooked street like in San Francisco! Wente offers seven different chardonnays.
There are quite a few Wente wine tasting options. Guests to Wente can choose to take an estate, vineyard or Winemaker’s studio tasting or take a private tasting or tour with food pairing. There is a tasting fee for each.
Wente Vineyards has a restaurant and a grill. The Wente winery also holds lots of live music concerts with big names over the summer in their lovely and quite intimate outdoor patios.
And as if that wasn’t enough there are even wine caves that host wine tastings and/or private events. Wente is the place for Livermore winery events.
The second winery was Page Mill. Page Mill winery started in 1976 at the base of the Santa Cruz mountains and moved to the Livermore Valley in 2004. Their flagship wines include Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Syrah, Estate Petite Sirah, and GPS.
We enjoyed our lunch at Page Mill. When I booked the tour I was asked to choose between sandwich and salad options. These were presented to us at Page Mill along with some chips to help soak up the wine!
The third and final stop was at Darcie Kent Vineyards . I loved this winery as it combines great wine with art. Darcie Kent is run by an actual Darcie Kent but she is the fifth generation of this family-owned winery. In the tradition of her grandfather, she combines a love of wine with a love of art.
All bottles at Darcie Kent Vineyards Livermore feature the art of Darcie Kent. And the tanks, sheds, and warehouses on the site are all in vibrant colours.
The Darcie Kent Vineyard tasting room is lovely – particularly the outdoor glass area. And there is a very relaxing garden at the front of the winery which is perfect for kids.
I particularly loved the Darcie Kent Chardonnay and bought a bottle of wine to take home.
Participants in the Livermore Wine Trolley also receive loads of discounts! Firstly there are discounts when you buy wine at any of the wineries visited.
Secondly, there are discounts available at several Livermore restaurants on the day of your tour (you need your tour paper bracelet to receive the discount).
There are a few other Livermore wine tasting tours. The Livermore Food tour features a wine flight with food. This one of the Livermore wine tours takes place in Livermore and combines a walking tour history of Livermore with visits to 4-5 Livermore restaurants.
The Livermore Valley Winery Join In Group tours run on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays between April and November.
Or if you’re basing yourself in San Francisco this Sip n Shop Tour will take you to two Livermore wineries plus the big outlet mall nearby as a day trip from San Francisco.
For private Livermore wine tasting tours as well as chauffeur-driven cars check out the Livermore Valley Winegrowers website.
I rather literally stumbled on the First Street Wine Company in Livermore. The Livermore Wine Trolley finishes in the town of Livermore. I decided that it was quite early and I should look at what other options were available for some more wine tasting.
Heading to the main street of Livermore I immediately came across the First Street Wine Company. What a fantastic spot! It is a mix of a wine bar and a wine shop.
First Street Wine Company Livermore has been operating for nine years and they have personally tasted every wine they stock! The First Street Wine Company runs formal wine tastings as well as more informal wine flights which I decided to try.
I sat at their small bar and immediately met several locals who were also enjoying a glass of wine on a Friday afternoon (many of my food and winery tips later in the post were sourced during this drinking session!).
I really enjoyed my visit to the First Street Wine Company for several reasons. Firstly, it is an extremely atmospheric bar/shop. It isn’t fancy but it is very comfortable and just oozes wine credibility.
Secondly, I could tell that the tastings/flights are all varied depending on what is open and mixed with recommendations. Third, I was actually hanging out with the locals. Apparently First Street Wine Company does get other tourists but it is most popular with locals.
It was terrific to meet locals who also love wine and get their tips. Finally, the wines were fantastic and I discovered and tried many delicious options.
For example, the local wine brand Nipote, known for an amazing cabernet sauvignon, is only available at The First Street Wine Company. Nipote isn’t a winery – it is literally a woman just making wine with her own grapes.
This has now been bought by Steven Kent but this is the kind of local find you will experience on a visit to the First Street Wine Company Livermore.

Alas, whilst the wineries of Livermore are not terribly far away if you’re driving they are quite a distance if you wanted to walk. They are also probably a bit far for the average cyclist but it is possible to hire e-bikes.
So the best option here is to visit the wineries and spit or to convince someone else to come with and drive. Not really ideal. I visited Retzlaff Vineyards (Livermore Valley’s only certified organic vineyards on a historic property) and McGrail on my first afternoon and drove and spat.
I didn’t mind too much as I knew I was going to get an Uber that evening so I could enjoy some wine at Purple Orchid and dinner!
Of course, you could get Uber or Lyft in between wineries but that would add up.
If you are wanting to put together a Livermore wine tasting itinerary do have a look at the Livermore Valley Winegrowers association site for assistance.
⇒ If you like hidden gems when it comes to wine you’ll love reading about Charlottesville Wineries and Wolfville Wineries in Nova Scotia Canada .
There was no such thing as a bad Livermore winery based on my experience but of course, depending on what you enjoy when it comes to wine there will be preferences.
My two favourite Livermore wineries were McGrail Vineyards and Darcie Kent Vineyards . McGrail Vineyards was wonderfully friendly and the winery has stunning views over Livermore Valley.
The winery itself is also very picturesque. I was driving when I visited McGrail Vineyards which was such a shame as I wanted to stay all day! -winningThe award winning McGrail Vineyards Cabernet Sauvignon
McGrail Winery was very relaxed. I particularly loved their chardonnay and wow their reds. It was easy to understand how McGrail Vineyards won the Red Sweepstakes at the San Francisco Chronicle in 2012 for their 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve – essentially saying it was the best wine in the USA that year.
At First street wine bar, I tasted Wood Family Vineyards and Cellar 13 wines. Both of these vineyards are part of the 3 Steves Winery – and I really enjoyed the wines from both of these Livermore vineyards, particularly the Chardonnay.

Some other wineries in the tri-valley’s Livermore Valley which came highly recommended but I didn’t have time to visit:
⇒ Las Positas Vineyards – very highly recommended and apparently a lovely Meditteranean setting for wine tasting experiences
⇒ The Steven Kent Winery – specialises in small-lot wines made from Bordeaux varietals like cabernet franc. An outstanding sauvignon blanc which I highly recommend trying.
⇒ Cedar Mountain Winery and Port Works – very close to the Purple Orchid. In addition to a wide range of wines, they have speciality ports.
Most of the restaurants in the Livermore Valley are located in its two towns of Livermore and Pleasanton. Outside of the towns, many of the wineries have their own restaurants.
I had a fantastic meal in Pleasanton at Sabio on Main . There was a fantastic wine list – of course! This is where I tried the delicious Steven Kent Sauvignon Blanc. The chef at Sabio on Main is apparently quite well known and the food was outstanding!
Sabio on Main Pleasanton is famous for its chargrilled cauliflower with good reason. We started with this as one of several small plates.
It was followed by a melt in the mouth semolina gnocchi with kale, Panzanella salad with perfectly ripe tomatoes and burrata, homemade bread with chicken liver pate, pomegranate and sesame seeds and then, when we had no more room, amazing homemade doughnuts.
Range Life is a beautiful modern restaurant featuring seasonal and local ingredients in downtown Livermore. I began my meal there with a terrific eggplant dip – but the hero was this rather amazing soft, fresh Meditteranean style bread – wow!
I then moved on to chicken for my main at Range Life Livermore. Sorry, I had had a few wines by then so I can’t remember how it was described but it was delicious!
I enjoyed a terrific hamburger at the Wente Grill for lunch. This Wente Grill was next to their golf course rather than in the main winery area (which also has a restaurant).
And I do like to pride myself on being able to sniff out good coffee – even after a couple of wines! After finishing on the Livermore Wine Trolley I had a stroll down the main street of Livermore and spotted Panama Bay.
I had an excellent flat white and highly recommend Panama Bay Livermore for your caffeine needs whilst in the Livermore Wine valley California .
I have mentioned a few times in this post that I met several locals. I always ask where is good to eat. I didn’t manage to make it to any of these restaurants but this is what the locals told me. If you manage to get there please do email me and tell me your views and I will add them to this post.
⇒ Rusty’s – for burgers and steaks
⇒ Strizzi’s – Italian – globally inspired, locally enhanced
⇒ Casa Orozco – Mexican
⇒ Demitris – family-owned Greek restaurant
Livermore and the area around it don’t have much choice when it comes to boutique hotels. But luckily for me, Livermore Valley Wine Growers found me a hidden gem! The Purple Orchid Wine Country Resort and Spa is my kind of boutique hotel!
This Livermore boutique hotel is a modern country house with only ten rooms. It is very much like staying at someone’s lovely and relaxing home.
The Purple Orchid is run by a delightful couple, Derek and Rhiannon and is full of personal touches. I met Rhiannon a couple of times during my stay – they are very hands-on which is lovely.
The ground floor of this Livermore bed and breakfast has a large living room area and a lovely big dining area that has coffee, tea and water 24/7.
My favourite area was around the swimming pool. The lovely swimming pool has its own little waterfall plus loungers and tables. I had evening drinks by the swimming pool as well as breakfast outside both mornings.
The view from the pool is just vineyards and hills. So lovely! There are also some stylish cabana areas to the side of the pool if you so desire.
Pre-order your breakfast the night before and let the Purple Orchid know what time you would like to eat. The breakfast menu changes on most days. I enjoyed some fantastic french toast with fresh berries and maple syrup and scrambled eggs with home roast potatoes.
When I woke up each morning I would wander down and grab a coffee and then head back to my room to get ready before heading down to breakfast. I do like a hotel where I can get coffee whenever I like!
The Purple Orchid doesn’t have a set lunch or dinner offer. If you do want to stay in for either meal just let them know ahead of time and they can work something else.
Or the other option is to get takeaway and bring it back to the hotel or use a delivery service.
One of my favourite things at The Purple Orchid was the nightly wine tasting! The wineries in Livermore tend to close around 430pm.
The Purple Orchid hosts a complimentary wine tasting with cheese every night between 430 and 530pm. They even have their own wine brand – sourced locally of course! And the chardonnay was fantastic!
I had a huge room at The Purple Orchid and an even bigger bed! I think it was king size plus plus! There were a lot of great things on offer in my room! The bathroom featured a big shower as well as a large tub with jets etc for a little spa experience.
The room itself was decorated in a Scandanavian modern style with soft grey walls and oak furniture. The side door opened up to a huge verandah shared with the rooms to the left.
There was lovely outdoor seating and nice views of the vines and the hills – plus short cut stairs down to the swimming pool.
There were two outstanding features of my room at The Purple Orchid. The first was the bathrobe. This lovely grey bathrobe was oh so comfortable and light but cozy – I absolutely wanted to steal it!
The second was the sheets. I slid into bed and thought oh my gosh – this is a comfort at a new level! And then I realised it was a bit familiar….
A few years ago I was in the Carribean for a friend’s birthday and had a spa treatment. The sheets on the bed for the spa treatment were just amazing – so soft and silky. I asked about the brand and was told it was Comphy sheets .
I ordered some online and they have been my favourite pair of sheets at home for quite some time! I did actually wonder if the sheets were from Comphy. I checked with Rhiannon and she confirmed that they were! And she could order me a set through her account!
So I now have a second pair of extremely soft and silky Comphy sheets at home!
If you are based in the US, hop onto their website and buy some. If you are in Europe the shipping is very expensive – especially when taxes are added.
I had Rhiannon order some and get them sent to the hotel I was going to be staying at in Las Vegas a few days later. The sheets pack up very tight so it was easy to get them into my luggage and avoid all the extra costs.
As if all of that wasn’t enough, The Purple Orchid North California also has a spa. It has a vast range of packages and treatments and is very popular as a Livermore day spa. They also offer spa packages for couples.
Many of the spa packages have a food and beverage credit option so you can have some lunch and/or wine with your treatment. And best of all, the Purple Orchid spa packages are all 15% off Monday through Friday.

Livermore is only 36 miles west of San Francisco. The easiest way to get there is to fly into San Francisco and then hire a car. Driving to Livermore from San Francisco takes less than one hour.
It is possible to get a taxi but that will cost between USD$250-300 – but an uber will apparently only cost around USD$100.
⇒ Flights to San Francisco
⇒ San Francisco Car Hire
It is also possible to take the BART , the San Francisco train system, to Dublin/Pleasanton and then take a bus. The bus takes about 30 minutes and buses run every 15 minutes.
The wonderful Livermore Valley Winegrowers Association was kind enough to host my trip to Livermore. This means they covered the costs for my accommodation, meals and the Livermore Wine Trolley. I covered the costs to get to Livermore including car hire.

This Livermore wine tasting guide is a hidden gem! From historic vineyards to family-owned estates, it unveils the best-kept secret in America’s wine country. A must-read for anyone seeking an enchanting California wine experience like me. Thank you!
It’s one of my absolute favorite wine regions in the world!
I must say that, as someone living in Europe, I haven’t heard of Livermore before. I assume the marketing of Napa Valley overshadows alternatives. But this seems to be such a helpful and informative article for anyone who wants to explore California’s secret wine corner!
Hey Ivan, you’re spot on—Napa Valley often steals the limelight, but Livermore is like the indie band you discover and can’t stop listening to. I’m thrilled you found the article helpful for uncovering California’s “secret wine corner”!
I definitely agree with you in that it’s overshadowed. I’ve been to Sonoma and Napa and have lived in SoCal and never heard of it until tonight. I wish I had known about it a few weeks ago so I could have planned to be there this month since October looks to be a great time to go!
California is such a big state with so much to see and do, it’s not completely surprising you haven’t heard of this “hidden” gem until now, even after living there. The good news? Livermore’s charm isn’t exclusive to October. It’s a year-round affair, so you’ve got plenty of time to plan your next wine escapade. And hey, now you’ve got an insider’s guide to make the most of it!
I’d never heard of Livermore Valley before! It looks like there are some incredible wineries here. I especially like the look of the historic Concannon Vineyards.
Hi Paige, I’m so glad you’re intrigued by Livermore Valley! And oh, the Victorian building at Concannon Vineyards is a sight to behold—it adds an extra layer of charm to the whole experience.

Where To Stay in Livermore
During my recent visit to Livermore, I stayed in the charming Purple Orchid. With the holiday decorations up, it felt like something straight out of a Hallmark movie! I was ready to fall in love.
The Purple Orchid Wine Country Resort & Spa is a sanctuary of rustic elegance, set amongst lush olive orchards, beautifully manicured gardens, and rolling vineyards. It’s tranquil, with the perfect blend of luxury and comfort.
They also have a beautiful pool and relaxing hot tub, plus free breakfast.
Livermore: Day One Itinerary
Arrive in Livemore and check into your hotel. Then, get ready! A day of adventure and wine tasting awaits. Our first stops are iconic Livermore wineries .
Darcie Kent Estate Winery
Darcie Kent is a family-owned boutique winery founded by fifth-generation vintner and artist Darcie Kent.
Known for its small-lot, handcrafted wines, the vineyard cultivates a variety of grapes, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc, using a minimal intervention approach to highlight the region’s distinct terroir. Each bottle features original artwork by Darcie, combining the family’s passion for art and winemaking.
I absolutely oved their charming tasting room, with artwork by Darcie decorating every square inch. It was a true artists’ paradise!

McGrail Vineyards & Wine Tasting
Nestled in the heart of Livermore Valley, McGrail Vineyards is a must-visit gem for wine enthusiasts. Known for their warm hospitality and exquisite wines, this family-owned winery focuses on premium, estate-grown Cabernet Sauvignon… although I fell most in love with their Chardonnay!
The vineyard practices sustainable farming methods and is dedicated to producing high-quality wines with a focus on single varietal, small lot wines that truly express the uniqueness of the terroir.

Murrieta’s Well
Murrieta’s Well is one of the most well-known wineries in Livermore and is a historic winery dating back to 1884. It’s part of the Wente Family Estates (also iconic!) and is known for sustainable farming practices and an artisanal approach to winemaking, specializing in blends and single-varietal wines.
The estate, named after Gold Rush-era bandit Joaquin Murrieta who discovered the property’s artesian well, offers a unique tasting experience in a refurbished historic building, featuring a range of high-quality wines and exclusive small lot offerings.
Murrieta’s Well is not just a winery; it’s a journey into the heart of Livermore’s winemaking legacy. Immerse yourself in the rich flavors and stories that make Murrieta’s Well a captivating destination for wine enthusiasts seeking both tradition and innovation.

Dinner: Locanda Wine Bar
Locanda provides a unique guest experience by blending old-world hospitality with authentic recipes. These recipes harmoniously unite traditional Italian and contemporary creative cooking styles in a warm, inviting atmosphere.
Everyone recommended their Zucchini flowers, and I have to agree – they were incredible! You can’t go wrong with anything on their menu. Plus, I love that they have local wines on their wine list.

Livermore: Day Two Itinerary

Concannon Vineyard
Start day two of your Livermore winery itinerary off with a visit to another iconic stop – Concannon Vineyard.
Concannon is known as the granddaddy of California Cabernet Sauvignon—clones that came from its rootstock have been used in 80% of California’s Cabernet Sauvignon.
Founded in 1883, Conconannon helped California Cabernet achieve international recognition and is home to America’s first Petite Sirah. It’s one of my favorite wineries here and I can’t recommend it enough to wine nerds who love history! And even if you don’t… it’s a beautiful property with fantastic wines.

Lunch: The Cheese Parlor
To say I’m obsessed with this stop is an understatement. I never knew there was so much to learn about cheese, but I got to talking with The Cheese Parlor owner and proprietor Brandon Wood, and now I can’t stop nerding out about it.
His collection and assortment of cheese is unmatched. Locals recommend his rotating sandwich features, or you can opt for a cheese plate that he’ll curate specifically to your palate.
The shop embodies Livermore’s small-town charm (several winemakers came in while we were there!) and caters to both cheese connoisseurs and casual enthusiasts.

The Steven Kent Winery
After lunch, head over to the Steven Kent winery.
Steven K Mirassou is a member of America’s oldest winemaking family. Six years before Abraham Lincoln was president, the Mirassou family was growing grapes and making wine in San Jose. Now he continues that tradition as the sixth generation in Livermore Valley.
I was absolutely blown away by Steven’s knowledge and passion for the Livermore Valley and Cabernet Franc. In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever done a Cab Franc side-by-side flight before, and it was incredible to be able to experience its full range of flavors.
With a commitment to meticulous vineyard management and precision winemaking, Steven Kent Winery combines tradition and innovation to create premium, expressive wines.
Learn more about Steven Kent Winery here
Free Range Flower Winery
Located in the same building as Steven Kent, Free Range Flower Winery brings something wholly unique to your wine-tasting itinerary – Instead of making wine from grapes, owner Aaliyah Nitoto makes her wines from fermented flowers!
While flower wine may resemble traditional wine and share similar alcohol contents, its distinct taste is a unique delight worth experiencing firsthand. Ensure a spot for this fun, colorful, and vibrant adventure by making a reservation in advance – plan ahead for a memorable tasting experience.

Dinner: Bottle Taps
This dinner admittedly takes you out of Livermore, just a dash, but it’s well worth the adventure!
BottleTaps in Pleasanton, CA, is a trendy gastropub celebrated for its diverse range of craft beers and upscale pub food. This welcoming spot features a modern, casual atmosphere, perfect for social gatherings and beer tastings.
I’m obsessed with their pretzel charcuterie boards (SO GOOD) and their wide assortment of beer and cider on tap (sometimes you need to cleanse your palate with something lighter and bubbly after a day of wine tasting). They also do trivia nights, which we happened to be in town for, and it was so much fun!

Livermore: Day Three Itinerary
JMC Cellars
Start your day off with a tasting at Livermore’s newest winery – JMC Cellars. Owned by winemaker Jessica Carroll, JMC focuses on lesser-known wine varieties and brings a touch of artistry to everything she does.
As a photographer, I loved that her labels and branding are inspired by cyanotypes, a type of vintage photographic printing process that produces a cyan-blue print.
Her wines are also absolutely beautiful, and the tasting room has stunning vineyard views. This is one of my favorite stops on the itinerary!
Learn more about JMC Cellars
Las Positas Vineyards
And last, but certainly not least, end your Livermore wine tasting adventure with a visit to Las Positas.
This family-owned winery is known for its handcrafted, small-lot, estate-grown wines paired with artisan food offerings. In fact, the food pairability is crucial to everything they make.
Here, wines are served via tasting towers, so you can sip at your own pace and easily revisit. Be sure to order a snack (or two!) from their delicious menu and enjoy how food-friendly everything is.
The winery also features live music regularly, so be sure to check out their calendar of events!
Learn more about Las Positas
With over 40 wineries and continuing to grow, Livermore is an idyllic destination for wine lovers that’s closer than you might think!
It’s an enticing destination that’s close to everything and beyond your expectations, blending beautiful landscapes with a rich viticulture heritage. With its ongoing resurgence in winemaking, the Livermore Valley serves as a tribute to its illustrious past and a beacon for the future of California’s wine industry, making it an irresistible draw for wine enthusiasts.
I hope you enjoy your trip there and savor every sip. Cheers!

Livermore wineries, fenestra winery.
Fenestra Winery is Livermore Valley’s first family-owned boutique winery. Built in 1889, this charming winery provides beautiful picnic grounds, bordered by a creek with stunning vineyards views. It is one of our favorite tasting rooms for celebrations throughout the seasons. Whether you are visiting during the winter holidays or the peak of summer, you can always look forward to plenty of fun events.
Wente Vineyards
Wente Vineyards was founded in 1883; it is the oldest, continuously operated family-owned winery in the country! Sustainable walking tours and private cave tastings are some of our favorite ways to enjoy this winery. In addition, the restaurant at Wente offers an award-winning menu that is carefully crafted with only the freshest local ingredients. The seasonal menu at Wente Restaurant changes daily.
If you happen to visit during the summer, the Concerts at Wente Vineyards are always one of the Livermore Valley’s top attractions and highlights! (If you would like to save money on tickets and lodging for this amazing concert series, take advantage of our Wente Concert Series Package .)
The Singing Winemaker
The Singing Winemaker is one of the most fun and memorable wineries that you can visit in Livermore Valley. From the handmade decor to the singing winemaker himself, Steve Powell, this eclectic tasting room knows the importance of incorporating art into the winemaking process. If you are searching for a unique tasting with great wine and lovely music and art, then The Singing Winemaker won’t disappoint. In addition, this one-of-a-kind winery is dedicated to providing wine for all palates, so there is something here for everyone!
San Jose Wineries
Travieso winery.
At Travieso Winery, partners Mats and Ray built their business on the foundation of California grapes. Mats is a physician, and his first batch of wine came out of a half ton of grapes that was gifted to him from one of his patients. He and Ray, a marine geologist, made wine in Ray’s living room for the first time, and that is when Travieso was born! Located in Campbell, the tasting room is still convenient for wine tasting in San Jose.
Lohr Vineyards & Wines
Jerry Lohr was an early pioneer of winemaking in the California Central Coast. At J. Lohr you can learn as much about the history of California winegrowing as about the wines themselves. At this wine tasting in San Jose, you’ll follow their beginnings, four decades ago to present. Their vineyards include more than 1,300 acres of cool-climate estate in the Arroyo Seco and Santa Lucia Highlands regions of Monterey County, over 2,300 acres in Paso Robles, and 33 acres in Napa Valley. Better still, the wines of J. Lohr come out of sustainably farmed estate fruit.
Divine Winery Tasting Room
If your idea of the perfect day includes an elegant tasting room with affordable flights of wine and interesting stories behind each bottle, make your way over to the Divine Tasting Room . Located in the heart of downtown San Jose, Divine Winery is proudly regional and offers fine wines that are not available in stores. Formerly Sherman Cellars and Red Light Wine Room, this one-of-a-kind winery offers award-winning handcrafted wines that are sourced from the greater Bay Area wineries, including Livermore Valley, the Sierra Foothills, and beyond.
Pleasanton Wineries
Ruby hill winery.
Ruby Hill Winery was established in 1887. It is a family-owned and operated winery in the heart of Pleasanton, CA. At Ruby Hill Winery , you will find a 150 acre vineyard planted with 11 distinct varietals. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Zinfandel, Sangiovese, and Petite Sirah are just a few wines that you can enjoy! Ruby Hill Winery operates with the mission of becoming a full estate winery. Today, 98 percent of the grapes used are grown in their very own vineyard.
Make the most of your visit to this winery by scheduling a tour. Tours are the perfect way to learn about the history of Ruby Hill Winery and catch a glimpse into the winemaking process. The tour at Ruby Hill Winery also includes a visit their sister winery, Rubino Estates Winery!

If you choose to embark on the winery tour during your visit at Ruby Hill Winery, then Rubino Winery is your second stop! You could easily spend a day here and still have plenty to do. In addition to a beautiful tasting room, Rubino also houses an elegant library room, barrel room, bocce ball court, and picnic areas.
You are missing out during your trip if you don’t take the Duck Boat Tour. This adventurous tour guides visitors through the vineyard and also includes a flight of wine, a sit-down food pairing, and a tour of the production facility. Remember to stop by the gift shop before you leave and take home a bottle of award-winning wine!
Tips for Your Visit
- If you plan to embark on a winery tour, we recommend wearing something casual and comfortable. Vineyards can be muddy during the winter, so heeled shoes are discouraged.

The 5 Best Livermore Wineries to Visit | Livermore Wine Tasting
CWA Staff [May 2017]
We set out to find the five best Livermore wineries to visit. Livermore's wineries live in the large shadow cast by the world famous Napa and Sonoma wine regions. However, as a Bay Area resident, visiting Livermore makes a lot of sense. Livermore wine country is only a short drive from Silicon Valley, San Francisco or Oakland. You can reach your first winery in under 90 minutes. Despite the short trip, you will feel like you've entered a different world. Livermore offers the rural charm that the Bay Area lacks. It's a great place to catch your breath as you sample the local wine. You will also find shorter lines and less pretentious tasting rooms. And top it all off, the wine is damn good!
As the gateway to the Central Valley, Livermore, California is the easternmost city in the San Francisco Bay area. Founded in 1869, the City of Livermore is in the state’s oldest wine region. Livermore features a mild climate and plenty of open space. The environment lends itself to a relaxed and less congested lifestyle.
The city is also known for its arts, culture and western heritage. Livermore offers a unique choice of activities – sure to have the right fit for everyone who visits, but the wineries are the top attraction for us.
The best wineries in Livermore offer a wide variety of atmospheres, food pairings, tours and wine tastings.
Here are the five best Livermore wineries to visit:
Wente vineyards | 5565 tesla rd. livermore.
Any trip to Livermore's wine country should start at Wente Vineyards. Wente set the standard for the best Livermore wineries a long time ago. German immigrant C.H. Wente arrived in California in the 1800's. He learned the wine business from Napa pioneer Charles Krug. Then he moved to Livermore to establish his own vineyard and winery before prohibition hit California's wine industry. Fortunately for us, the winery survived through the dry times.
What started as a modest vineyard and winery has grown into a winemaking powerhouse. The winery boasts a golf course, top-notch restaurant, and multiple tasting rooms. It's a great place to host an event like a vineyard wedding.
Most importantly, Wente doesn't rely on their past success to keep wine lovers coming back. They are constantly striving to improve their winemaking and keep up with wine trends. The wine is what truly makes them one of the best Livermore wineries to visit.
When you plan your visit to Wente, make sure you look through all of your tasting options. There are public, private and guided tour options. The small lot Nth Degree wines from fifth generation winemaker Karl D. Wente are available for tasting now. These wines show off the winemaking skills that the Wente family has developed over all these years!
Bent Creek Winery |5455 Greenville Rd Livermore
The next winery on our list of the best Livermore wineries is a radical departure from the size and scope of Wente. Bent Creek Winery provides an intimate wine tasting experience at a great value. Nestled in the rolling hills of Livermore, Bent Creek Winery offers guests an atmosphere so serene that you feel as if you are miles away from the hustle and bustle of the city life. Bent Creek was formed by four friends. They all met while working as educators in the Livermore school district. They learned then that they shared a love for wine.
Their tasting fee is $10 per person. The fee can be applied toward the purchase of a bottle of wine during your visit. For this $10 fee, you get to taste 11 different wines! Visitors rave about the depth and balance of their red wines. They also offer a variety of food pairings with some of their newly released wines. Some of the delicious food pairings include Jamaican jerk chicken, mixed mushroom soup, and flourless chocolate cake.
Note that this winery is dog-friendly.
Three Steve's Winery | 5700 Greenville Rd Livermore
This beautiful hilltop winery is one of the best Livermore wineries to visit for a few reasons. The first reason is the wine. The second reason is the knowledgeable and friendly staff. The third reason is the incredible view from the winery. This is a fun and friendly winery started by three friends named, you guessed it, Steve. They set out to make memorable wines in the Livermore wine region. The reviews are in and we think they accomplished their goal!
For a $15 tasting fee, you will receive six nice pours. Their Chilean wines are very well received, so make sure these are on your tasting list. You can take advantage of fun events like the family movie night if you are a local or happen to be in the area. You may also get to meet one of the Steves when you visit. That's the beauty of the best Livermore wineries. The wineries are typically smaller and you can ask questions about the wines directly to the people that make them!
The Steven Kent Winery | 5443 Tesla Rd Livermore
Are you serious about Cabernet Sauvignon? The Steven Kent Winery may be the best Livermore winery for you. This winery isn't about bocce courts, bands, and movies. This winery is about making exceptional wine. Many visitors claim that this winery produces Cabernet Sauvignon to rival the best wineries in Napa. That is high praise for this remarkably consistent Livermore winery.
Make a reservation to taste in either the Barrel Room (a tasting of the winery's Cabs and Bordeaux blends) or in the Reserve Room (a tasting of library wines). The reserve room tasting is a more intimate seated tasting. You will receive a lot of information about the full wine portfolio at this tasting. The winery also has a nice calendar of events. Check this out to see if your tasting trip coincides with a special tasting or release party.
Murrieta’s Well | 3005 Mines Rd
This may be the most beautiful winery in Livermore. The recently renovated winery tasting room is stunning as are the grounds. Known as one of California’s original wine estates, Murrieta’s Well has been growing grapes since the 1800s. Robert Meyer, the winemaker at Murrieta’s Well, said: “The wines we create inspire people to think about where the grapes are grown.” Experience their incredible wine while sitting in their Club Lounge. The Club Lounge was created so that members could come sit in this oasis and enjoy all that their estate has to offer. Other locations on the estate for guests to relax include the tasting bar and the patio/the barrel room.
This is not an inexpensive wine tasting experience, but the small touches make it worthwhile. You can order small plates to pair with your wine here. This is a nice feature that helps you plan for future food/wine pairings at home. This winery is also a great option for events/weddings. The history, wine, and beauty of the winery make this one of the best Livermore wineries.

Livermore Valley Wine Region: 10 Unforgettable Tasting Experiences
by Jill Loeffler •
Updated: June 8, 2023
The Livermore Valley Wine Region may not be as famous as its cousins Napa or Sonoma, but it is equally gorgeous, the people are just as friendly, and the wine is just as amazing. And, in my opinion, sometimes the experience of visiting here is better since the wineries are smaller, and they really focus on a personalized experience.
This historic region sits about an hour and fifteen minutes east of San Francisco. You will find more than 50 wineries here. In 1936, Wente Vineyards was the first to produce a varietally labeled Chardonnay.
Today, you will find a wide variety of wines. Some of the most popular are their Chardonnays, Cabernet Sauvignons, and Petit Sirahs. You will also find Zinfandel, Syrah, Sauvignon Blanc, and dozens of other varieties.
If you plan to visit Yosemite, this is a fantastic place to stop during your journey. It's also a fantastic day trip from San Francisco.
Here are ten wineries in Livermore Valley Wine Country I think you will enjoy during your visit.
Note : Many of the Livermore Valley wineries are open at limited times since they are quite small. Some also require reservations, and most reservations can be made online.
To make your stay more enjoyable, I've also included some additional information at the bottom. Feel free to skip ahead to these if you want to learn more about staying here for a few nights, some great places to eat, the best times to visit, and other tips.

1. 3 Steves Winery
Address : 5700 Greenville Road, Livermore
Tasting : Reservations are not required
This is, without a doubt, my favorite winery in the region. Not only are the wines fantastic, the owner, the employees, and the doggie there are some of the happiest people we've met anywhere.
The story of 3 Steves starts with three friends, all named Steve. While you will only find one Steve on site these days, he, his son Jason, and the rest of his family run this small winery.
They opened in 2010 and have won many awards over the years, including Best Wine of Show from the San Francisco Chronicle.
While you may be surprised that a winery that is this small (they only produce about 5,000 cases a year) could win such an important award, you will find it's just one example to show the quality of wines produced here.
They have amazing wine, and my husband and I love the experience in their tasting room. The staff is friendly and will make your wine-tasting experience a lot of fun!
You will also love their silly, classic signs and paraphernalia about wine drinking all around the tasting room.
Their wine-tasting room sits at one of the highest points around, so you get sweeping views of Livermore Valley Wine Country, vineyards, and the surrounding area.
Trust me, put them first on your list of wineries to visit!
2. Wente Vineyards
Address : 5040 Arroyo Road, Livermore
Tasting : Reservations are encouraged
Compared to 3 Steves Winery, Wente is larger and much more well-known. It has been around since 1883 and produces 325,000 cases a year.
However, this is still small compared to the larger Sonoma and Napa wineries (Gallo Winery produces 83 MILLION cases a year!), so you will surely get personal attention.
Wente Vineyards is located on beautiful rolling hills and gives an amazing view of the area around it. This family-owned winery has won many awards, and you will love tasting either inside or outside on their historic property.
I love going here because they have a seated tasting if you just want to try their wines. They also offer special tastings with foods that are paired with specific wines to bring out the aroma and taste.
They also have events and fun gatherings throughout the year.
Note : There is also an 18-hole golf course on the grounds, which is 181-yards and par 72, designed by Jack Norman. It is part of the PGA Tour's Nationwide Tour.
3. The Steven Kent Winery
Address : 5443 Tesla Road, Livermore
Tasting : Reservations are required
The Steven Ken Winery is another great, small winery in Livermore Valley. Their owner and winemaker, Steven Kent Mirassou, is a 6th generation winemaker.
His family is one of America's oldest wine-making families. To give you an idea of how long his family has been making wine -- they started six years before Abraham Lincoln became president!
Focusing primarily on reds, such as Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, with some Barberas and other lesser-known wines, they age each vintage in French oak barrels at the height of perfection.
I love visiting here because there are so many tasting choices and options. They range from a simple wine-by-the-glass tasting all the way up to a private experience with their resident sommelier!
They often have special events, so make sure to check ahead. Being situated right in the heart of the valley, you will enjoy your views as you taste their delicious wines.
Note : The Steven Kent Winery name can be a little confusing as there are actually four separate but combined wineries under that umbrella. These include Steven Kent, Lineage, L'Autre Cote (which only makes Cabernet Franc), and Mia Nipote (which makes reds and also a Sauvignon Blanc).
4. McGrail Vineyards and Winery
Address : 5600 Greenville Road, Livermore
Tastings : Reservations are not required for the indoor bar with four or fewer people. Reservations are required for other tastings.
McGrail is a perfect next selection on our list of Livermore Valley wineries since they began selling their grapes to the aforementioned Steven Kent Winery in 1999. After a few years, they decided to make their own wines. This business grew into a winery of about 1,000 cases.
As they started to win awards, they continued to expand and are now up to about 4,500 cases, which is still tiny.
Being that they are so small, they can produce wine of exacting standards. An example of this is when their Cabernet Reserve won the Best Red Wine in the US at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition!
This immediately put them on the map as one of the "must-visit" wineries in the Bay Area.
Their focus is primarily on Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay, with a few others wines depending on the season.
The tasting room is situated in the middle of the valley, with incredible views of the vineyards and the mountains around it, and is incredibly comfortable, so you'll feel like you are at home here.

5. Page Mill Winery
Address : 1960 S. Livermore Avenue, Livermore
Tastings : Reservations are recommended
Another mini-winery, Page Mill, originally started in Dick Stark's house. Realizing that wine-making was his dream, he decided he wanted to build a winery. At that time, he realized that Livermore Valley Wine Country was the perfect appellation for his wines to flourish.
The winery primarily focuses on red wines, including many popular varieties. However, they make more exotic ones, too, such as Syrah, Malbec, Petit Verdot, and others. Their white varietals include Chardonnays and Blanc de Blanc.
The tasting room and winery are gorgeous, designed in the style of a classic Italian villa, with stone, wood, and other natural materials.
You will need to contact them in advance for tastings since they are such a small winery.
Depending on when you go, there are special tastings and fun events.
One of my favorites is a combination of Tai Chi and wine tasting. It is something you have to experience at least once in your life!
6. Retzlaff Winery
Address : 1356 S. Livermore Avenue, Livermore
Tastings : Reservations are recommended. Reservations are required for groups of 6 or more.
A certified fully organic winery, Retzlaff Winery uses biodiversity to allow the grapes and wine to become fully formed without any outside intervention by chemicals.
Another smaller winery, they grow their grapes on just over 10 acres of land. This allows them to control every single step of wine growing and winemaking.
Since they want to keep everything as personal as possible, they add the vintage, the number of cases, and the winemaker's name onto the label by hand. It is incredibly cute, and you feel a little like family when you buy a bottle of their wine.
They focus primarily on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc, and Chardonnay. Their Cabernet Sauvignon has won a double gold medal at the California State Fair.
The tasting room looks like a simple but lovely barn, and you'll love all the personal touches. I enjoy that there is so much nature around, such as flowers and honeybees.
7. Concannon Vineyards
Address : 4590 Tesla Rd, Livermore
Tastings : Reservations are encouraged but not required
Even though Concannon is the 2nd largest winery in the Livermore Valley, it is still considered a small one compared to many in Napa or Sonoma.
James Concannon started it in 1883 when he moved to the US from Ireland. He was one of the first to bring Bordeaux-style wines to the area.
Like many wineries, they produce a Sauvignon Blanc. They also produce a Viognier and a Semillon, along with other whites.
As for reds, they have Cabs, Pinots, and several lesser-known wines.
You will have a nice selection from your favorites to something you've never tried before!
They also helped develop the Wine Institute's "Code of Sustainable Winegrowing Practices," so you know you are drinking good, quality wine here.
Their tasting room was rated among the top 25 in all of California by the incredibly well-respected Michael Cervin of "IntoWine.com." The views are gorgeous, and it is built like a classic mansion in the middle of the vineyards.
8. Bent Creek Winery
Address : 5455 Greenville Road, Livermore
Tastings : Reservations recommended, call before you arrive if you don't have reservations to make sure they can accommodate you.
Like so many others in Livermore Valley Wine Country, owners Tom and Pat Heineman sold their grapes to others before realizing that they could make wine that compared to any other. After taking viticulture classes at the world-renowned the University of California Davis, they opened Bent Creek Winery.
At around 3,500 cases a year, this is another tiny winery that is a joy to visit. Like many of the wineries in this appellation, they focus mostly on reds and have a few whites. These include classics like Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Zinfandels.
They also have Syrahs, Petite Sirah, and a few different ports if you want something a little more exotic.
The tasting room is very homey, and you'll immediately feel welcome. They have special events and tastings, so make sure to check ahead and see what is happening when you visit.
And, just in case you were wondering, there is a creek on the property!
Fun Wine Tasting Tours from SF
9. murrieta's well.
Address : 3005 Mines Road, Livermore
Tastings : Reservations are recommended for their seated tasting experience. Their patio is open for walk-in guests.
Another one of the Livermore Valley wineries with roots (pun intended) that reach back to the 1800s, Murrieta's Well, originally used cutting from France to start their vineyard. In fact, these cuttings came from the world-famous Chateau d'Yquem and Chateau Margaux wineries.
After all those years, one of the members of the Wente family decided to buy the land and winery. They later partnered with the Traverso Chilean winemaker family, which allowed for some of the more varied wines in the valley.
As you'd expect, there are the usual cabs and chards, but they also have wonderful varieties such as Zarzuela, Petite Verdot, and Tempranillo.
Some of the whites include a Dry Orange Muscat, Rose, and their special "The Whip," which is a combination of Sauvignon Blanc, Malvasia Bianca, Orange Muscat, and Viognier. Trust me, you've never had anything like this before!
The winery's tasting room is an old barn that has been refurbished to keep all the classic style while offering modern touches. There is a wonderful outdoor courtyard if you want to grab some sunshine.
Make sure to check their events and special experiences.
10. Wood Family Vineyards
Address : 2407 Research Drive, Livermore
Tastings : Reservations are recommended but not necessary.
This is another one of my favorite stories of how a winery started. In 1991, Rhonda Wood was working as a pilot and was forced to take leave when she became pregnant.
After trying her hand at beer and then wine at her home, she and her husband decided to buy some land and start their own winery!
In 2006, Rhonda retired and became a full-time winemaker.
The wines focus primarily on red, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. You'll also find other varieties, such as Albarino, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. I also love their blends.
The tasting room is located in the city and is fairly nondescript. However, when you go inside, it is full of loads of fun art, wine barrels, and comfy couches so you can relax and enjoy your time.
They often have live music and other special events, including cooking classes.
Best Time to Visit Livermore Valley
The best time to visit Livermore Valley wineries are in the late summer or early fall. This is because the grapes are ripe on the vines, it's starting to cool down a bit, and the area is buzzing with up and coming harvest activities. It's a fun time to take pictures of the region too.
Even though that is my favorite time of year, it's also fun to visit anytime of year. Most wineries here are a bit smaller, so only offer open tastings on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Some of the bigger places offer tastings from Thursday - Monday. Most are closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Although it's never too crowded here (which is another reason I love it), I find that Fridays tend to be a great time to visit. There are fewer people around and the staff is more readily available to answer questions about their wines, vineyards, and the region overall.
Livermore Wine Trolley
A fun way to experience this region is on the Livermore Wine Trolley. They offer small group wine tours in the region on Saturday and Sunday. They last around four hours.
You'll park at one of three wineries where you will begin your adventure with an hour long wine pairing with small bites and five wines. The Trolley will then pick you up and drop you off at two other wineries. After you are done tasting, they trolley will drive you back to your car.

Great Places to Stay Nearby
If you plan to visit the area for a day or two, you will find plenty of hotel options nearby. Here are just a few of my top picks.
The Purple Orchid Wine Country Resort and Spa
If budget isn't an issue, then this is an awesome place to stay. It's a cute bed and breakfast with around 10 rooms right next to a vineyard. It's relaxing and the rooms offer a plenty of space to spread out.
Most offer views of the vineyard, king beds (one room offers two queens), and a fireplace. There is also a pool onsite, free breakfast and plenty of parking.

Hampton Inn Livermore
About 20 minutes away from the Livermore wineries, you will find the Hampton Inn Livermore. This three star hotel offers easy access to wine country, local attractions, and I-580.
It has a pool, free breakfast and onsite parking. It's also budget friendly and ranges from around $100 to $200 a night.
>> Find out more about staying at the Hampton Inn
Home2 Suites by Hilton Livermore
One of the highest rated hotels in Livermore Valley wine country is Home2 Suites by Hilton Livermore. All of the rooms are suites with extra space for seating, working, and/or lounging around.
They feature an outdoor saline pool, HDTV, and and outdoor fire pit.
It's also just a 15 minute drive to BART and about 25 minutes away from the local wineries.
>> Find out more about staying at the Home2 Suites
Here are just a few great places to grab breakfast, lunch, or dinner during your visit.
- First Street Alehouse : Brew pub that offers American comfort food, open daily for lunch and dinner, 2106 First Street
- Posada Alta Cocina : Moderately priced eatery featuring Mexican-inspired dishes, open daily for lunch and dinner (except Monday), 988 Murrieta Blvd.

Fun Things to do in Livermore: Wine, Food, Shopping
S ituated in the tri-valley area just a forty-five-minute drive from San Francisco, Livermore is worth visiting whether you’re stopping over en route to surrounding wineries , or are just looking to soak up some small-town simplicity.
Thanks to a multi-million dollar streetscape project in 2006, the four-lane highway that ran through Livermore’s downtown area has since been rerouted and replaced with a (much quieter) tree-lined main street. As a result, the city’s main shopping district is today a laid-back, pedestrian-focused place in which to walk, eat, drink and shop.
Wine, Food, Peace and Quiet in Livermore
Livermore History
Livermore’s surrounding valleys were originally home to the indigenous Ohlone people until Spanish colonialists arrived in the late 18th century. In 1869, pioneer William Mendenhall established the town on Rancho Las Positas land, naming it after his friend and ranch owner, Robert Livermore. Initially sustained by cattle farming, Livermore became popular in the wake of the gold rush when prospectors used it as a railroad stop.
It was only years later, after the soil and climate were found to be ideal for fruit and grape growing, that viticulture and fruit farming became part of the town’s economy. Although winemaking remains Livermore’s major industry today, the city’s population also feeds two nearby government research labs, and is conveniently located for Bay Area commuters.
Things to do in Livermore for 1 Perfect Day
If you’re looking for a great day trip destination from San Francisco or Oakland, Livermore, California has a lot to offer. With a variety of activities and attractions to choose from, you can easily plan the perfect day in this charming city.
Wine lovers can indulge in award-winning wines at Livermore Valley Wine Country, while history buffs can explore the fascinating Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. For nature enthusiasts, the picturesque Del Valle Regional Park is a must-visit spot. No matter what your interests are, Livermore has something special in store for you to enjoy an unforgettable day trip.
Explore Downtown Livermore
Downtown Livermore is small enough to walk through, so as you enter the town on North Livermore Street, take a right just before First Street and park in the free lot on the corner.
From your car, walk back to First Street – the main downtown shopping artery – and start your day with an espresso from Panama Red Coffee Company.
An independent coffee house with only six stores in the Bay Area, Panama uses gourmet beans roasted in the craftsman-style batch method that you won’t find at your average Starbucks. By day the coffee house is a cozy local meeting place, while by night, it’s one of Livermore’s main live music venues.
If you’re in the mood for clothes shopping, several stores on Main Street fit the bill. From Panama Red, walk to Baughman’s, a western apparel store that sells everything from boots and belts to shirts, hats and equestrian supplies.
Opened in 1881, the store is the oldest continuously run business in Livermore, so it’s worth a look-in just for this fact alone.
Near Covet, a contemporary women’s clothing store that stocks mostly California-sourced garments made predominantly from natural fabrics. Next, cross the road and stop in at Shepherd’s Gate New Life Store, a consignment boutique selling an assortment of used and new women’s clothes.
Besides clothing stores, additional things to do in Livermore, CA is visiting the independently owned shops. There are several interior and gift stores like Main Street Designs that sell knickknacks such as ornaments, picture frames, jewelry, accessories, gift cards and candles.
And whether you have a child with you or are nurturing your inner one, Fantasy Books and Games on the corner of First and South Livermore has an impressive range of action figurines, Marvel comics, and other graphic novels.
Wine Tasting in Livermore
If you want to wine taste but don’t feel like driving out to the surrounding wineries, Blacksmith Square is a good compromise. Located just a few blocks away on North Livermore Street, the square is the site of the town’s original blacksmith buildings that were renovated and reopened in 2006.
Today, the building’s occupants consist of boutique stores and tasting rooms serving over forty boutique wines from five local wineries: Hidden Creek, Big White House, John Christopher Cellars, Retzlaff and Thomas Coyne. If the weather is good, grab your glass and sit at the tables and chairs in the courtyard outside.
Livermore offers a satisfying range of food options for both lunch and dinner, but if you want to continue the wine theme, consider the contemporary Chinese cuisine at Uncle Yu’s at the Vineyard which offers quality wine pairing suggestions with each dish.
Combinations include sweet honey glazed calamari offset by the dryness of Gossett’s “Excellence” champagne, and lobster shumai and wontons paired with Kalin Cellars’ 1994 “Cuvee W” chardonnay.
For dessert, the mango, passion fruit and raspberry sorbetto dipped in white chocolate is hard to resist, especially when served with the berry-flavored Vin du Bugey-Cerdon’s “La Cueille” from Savoie in the French alps.
With a day exploring downtown Livermore and tasting a few local wines, you still have all the tri-valley wineries to visit, though you can always come back to them another day. After all, in keeping with the spirit of the area, there’s something to be said for taking it slow.
Hiking in Livermore
If you are looking for more Livermore adventures, check out some of these great hikes.
Mount Diablo is a Tri-Valley favorite. The view from the summit is one of the most beautiful you’ll find in the area.
Isabel Trail runs along Isabel Avenue and is a multi-use trail where you can bike, walk, run or horseback ride.
Sycamore Grove Park is a 2.5-mile long paved path of flat terrain that leads to expansive views of the Livermore Valley.

For Mexican, favorited are Posada Restaurant and Anita’s Mexican Restaurant. Uncle Yu’s at the Vineyard has a Zen vibe and serves Asian mains, wine pairings and has an outdoor patio. For sweet treats try Best Donuts or Dan Good Cookies.

Every wine has a story behind its label. The artwork on labels of Darcie Kent Vineyards’ wines depicts the vintner’s Livermore Valley estate. Some labels, such as those on Cupcake Vineyards’ new wine, Love is Wine Chardonnay, hook directly into streaming show culture. Simple wine labels like the one displaying “Josh” in large, fancy cursive become social media memes.
In January the internet gushed with posts about Napa’s Josh Cellars after an X (Twitter) user encouraged his followers to drink “Josh’s juice.” Josh bloomed into a synonym for wine, as in, “Pass the Josh.” The humorous contrast between the regular guy name and the elegant script piqued interest for the top-selling wine. Meanwhile in January, I fell into the deep well of Tuscan wine history. Chianti Classico Gran Selezione UGA, anyone? My article highlighted this new, top-level designation. But beyond wine aficionados, who cares about wines from 11 villages with a new quality designation on their complex labels? After swimming in Italian wine terms, I eagerly turned to two Livermore Valley wineries for wine label stories.
In 1883 Darcie Kent’s family opened the 62 nd bonded winery in the U.S. Kent’s great-grandfather drew the label for the winery which lasted for many decades. An artist herself, Darcie and her husband David Kent, a wine industry professional, launched Darcie Kent Vineyards in 1996. Located on Tesla Ave., the winery is known for Darcie’s artwork on the labels and her paintings on the walls. The labels for the Bordeaux varietal wines such as Stone Patch Cabernet Sauvignon are positioned vertically on the bottle. The painting reflects the sunny advantage of their higher elevation vineyards. The swirling blue lines draw attention to the afternoon Livermore Valley winds which augur cool nights to develop the wine’s flavor profiles.
Darcie’s brightly hued art is also featured on the horizontal wine labels from the leased Livermore land they farm such as Sauvignon Blanc from Triska vineyard.
As production grew and their daughters Kailyn and Amanda began working with them, the Kents opened Almost Famous as a second tasting room on S. Vasco Road in 2021 with the large backroom evolving into a popular music venue . The family also uses the tasting room as a wine incubator. Kailyn Kent helped design the newer Pistachio Lane series of wines in the $30 range, about half the price of Darice Kent wines.
I visited the winery to peruse newer wines such as Firepit, a popular red blend, and the Wine Without Borders series of not-so-common varietals where letters run over the top edge of the label. I liked the new label for top-of-the-line Choreography, a red blend which depicts two vines “dancing” together; the label has won an industry packaging award. A fan of Cabernet Franc wine, I was pleased to find a new one, The Strong Silent One, with a lightly sketched, line drawing of a non-binary face which could be male or female.
Following the trend for modern, sleek designs, new Pistachio Lane labels show simplified script, less art and more white space but continue to highlight the path near their vineyards with its stand of pistachio trees. A new line of wines to launch in June is shortened to “Darcie.”
Switching wine lanes, the labels for Concannon Vineyard , founded in 1883, follow a traditional pattern and evoke the stately arches at the winery’s entrance also on Tesla Road.
In January, I learned that Cupcake Vineyards , a brand in the same wine company that owns higher-end Concannon, would announce their Love is Wine Chardonnay on February 14 th in conjunction with Series 6 of the Netflix “Love is Blind” streaming series. Two things to know: The theme of the Netflix series is whether you can fall in love before meeting someone by talking to them from enclosed pods. In other words, is love blind? Now the question is, is wine love? Secondly, Cupcake and Concannon Vineyard are both in the portfolio of The Wine Group, the third largest wine company in the U.S. Targeted to a younger demographic, Cupcake Chardonnay landed on supermarket shelves with an easy-to-read label in 2008, a year after the launch of Josh. With 22 Cupcake wines plus five Lighthearted low-calorie wines, Cupcake is the largest premium wine brand by volume ($8 to $11) in the U.S. with the back label stating, “vinified and bottled in Livermore and Ripon, CA.”
Mirroring the business trend to co-brand products, the prominently displayed metallic gold label on the striking gold bottle of Love is Wine Chardonnay links directly to the ubiquitous gold, opaque wine glasses seen on “Love is Blind.” Netflix and Cupcake teased the new season with alumni sipping Love is Wine in golden goblets. Wine is Love Chardonnay costs about $3 more than Cupcake Chardonnay.
When asked about the collaboration on the wine’s flavor profile, Collin Cooley, The Wine Group’s senior director of marketing for premium wines, noted that “the taste cues of the rich buttery Chardonnay are a perfect pairing for the show.”
While Safeway shopping recently, I saw the distinctive Wine is Love Chardonnay and then noticed a new Josh wine—a gold-colored bottle with the Josh script and “Buttery Chardonnay” in prominent type below.
I may head back for The Strong, Silent Type Cabernet Franc at Darcie Kent Vineyards’ Bing’s Barn tasting room. Yes, Bing Crosby once owned the Darcie Kent property. Crosby wasn’t the silent type, but who knows— if he knew about the many new Livermore Valley wines , he might have exclaimed, “That’s lovely” and sung “C’est Magnifique, Taking a Chance on Love.”
