St. Louis Brewery Guide – Breweries Near Me

Breweries near me – st. louis missouri.

St. Louis, Missouri is known for its loyal baseball fans, the iconic Gateway Arch, and most importantly: an expansive craft beer scene. Boasting an array of over 20 breweries and thousands of beer styles, this city has something to please any palate. Looking for a brewery to visit?  Our team at City Brew Tours has crafted a list of recommendations to launch your own beer-soaked journey across the city!

The craft beer industry in St. Louis has grown exponentially within the last decade, pushing it above the national average for production quantities. Beer enthusiasts can drink their way through The Gateway to the West and be certain that there is no shortage of suds in this city! Even though it’s not “craft beer”, you can even pay a visit to the headquarters of Anheuser-Busch InBev, the largest brewing company in the United States…but we definitely don’t recommend it!

Both visitors and locals alike will hopefully learn a thing or two from our guide to breweries in St. Louis!

1.   4 Hands Brewing Co.

If you search any list of Top Breweries in St. Louis, Four Hands is consistently at the top!  A variety of different activities and events are scheduled weekly. From paint nights to flower arrangement lessons, their tasting room in the Lasalle Park neighborhood is never boring! This microbrewery’s beers are barrel-aged, producing a truly unique tap lineup.

2.  Well-Spent Brewing Co.

Located in the Midtown neighborhood of St. Louis, Well-Spent Beer is a family-owned business. Founder Kyle Kohlmorgen opened the doors of the repurposed movie theater-turned brewery in March 2018. Whether you are enjoying their outdoor lawn and patio space or drinking one of their “Yeast-Driven” beers in their unique facility, your dollars will certainly be Well-Spent!

3.   Twisted Roots Brewing Co.

Twisted Roots Brewing Co. is a bar that brews its own beers so there’s always something new on tap. You can find a variety of styles including a Dry Irish Stout, an American Pale Ale, and a Dry Hopped Belgian Single. Compliment your beer with their unique appetizers or one of their trademark burgers!

4. Earthbound Beer

Pay Earthbound a visit, and you’ll find yourself in the oldest brewery building in St. Louis. Self-proclaimed the “smallest, weirdest beer” in St. Louis, this brewery’s size enables experimentation with different brewing techniques. Earthbound’s snacks and beer are very affordable; you can drink a few pints of their best-selling Irish Red Ale and try a vegan, gluten-free or vegetarian appetizer without breaking the bank.

5. Perennial Artisan Ales

This 15-barrel brewery serves up concoctions influenced by Belgian and American styles, including specialty barrel-aged brews. Expect rich flavors from their unique locally-sourced ingredients, such as cacao nibs, vanilla beans, and chamomile flowers. Their tasting room features classic bar games as well as a dog-friendly patio, making it the perfect place to bring the whole family.

6. The Schlafly Tap Room (The Saint Louis Brewery)

Saint Louis Brewery is the largest independently-owned brewery in the state.  Choose from many unique styles on tap and in cans, including their signature stouts and IPAs. On the weekends, this brewery offers tours with free samples at the end!

7. Rockwell Beer Co.

Rockwell Beer’s location in The Grove district was opened by Andy Hille in November 2018. Offering more than just their own beer, this laid-back brewery offers a full bar including guest taps, cocktails, and wine. The use of repurposed shipping containers and colorful building design contribute to Rockwell’s fun and vibrant atmosphere.

8. Urban Chestnut Brewing Co.

Urban Chestnut offers something different at each of its three St. Louis locations from in-house smoked meats to New York style pizza! Their beers are split into two categories: the Reverence Series pays homage to historic Bavarian recipes and brewing styles while their Revolution series celebrates modern, American craft beer.

That wraps up our list of our favorite breweries in St. Louis! It was incredibly difficult to narrow down the list, and we could go on forever about the amazing beer that this city has to offer. Below, you can find some other breweries to explore in the greater St. Louis area. While you’re at it, check out our tour cities!

Anheuser-Busch Brewery Tour

Tour the Anheuser-Busch Brewery in St. Louis

Whitney Curtis/Getty Images

You can't talk about beer in St. Louis without bringing up one of its largest companies, Anheuser-Busch. The world-famous brewery has been a part of the city's landscape since 1852. The best way to learn about Anheuser-Busch and its beer-making process is by taking a free tour of the A-B Brewery in Soulard, just south of Downtown St. Louis . For the tours, go to the entrance at 12th and Lynch streets.

Visiting Tips

  • This is a walking tour so make sure to wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes. Part of the tour goes outside, so dress for the weather as well.
  • Children are welcome on the tour, but the brewery is not easily stroller accessible. Children will likely have to walk or be carried during parts of the tour.
  • Fridays and weekends are the busiest times for tours. For smaller crowds, plan to visit on a weekday.
  • Registration is not required to take a tour unless you are bringing a large group of 15 or more.
  • The tour lasts for a little more than an hour. It ends with free beer samples and soda for those younger than 21.

What You'll See

There are three main things you'll see on a tour. First is the Budweiser Clydesdales and their stable. The Clydesdales have been the face of the brand since the 1930s. They make hundreds of appearances every year.

Then, it's a walk through the brewing and bottling areas to see where Budweiser, Bud Light, and other brands are made. This portion of the tour includes stops in the historic Brew House, the fermentation cellar, and the packaging plant. This is where you'll learn about the history of the company and how it grew into the brewing giant that it is today.

Finally, it's a trip to the tasting room for two free samples of A-B products. Soda and snacks are also available. After the tour, you can stop by the gift shop for souvenirs or hit the Biergarten for more food and drinks.

As you might expect, Anheuser-Busch does things in a big way even with its tours. Groups can be quite large, and tours move pretty quickly. There won't be time to stop and chat with the brewmaster about the quality of the hops. If you're looking for a smaller, more personalized brewery tour, try Schlafly Bottleworks, an independent craft beer maker in St. Louis.

If you don't mind spending a little money, you can sign up for Beer School before you take a tour. The half-hour class includes tastings, pouring demonstrations, souvenirs, and information about the brewing process. Another option is the Brewmaster Tour, which offers a more in-depth, behind-the-scenes look at brewery operations.

Parking and Transportation

The A-B Brewery is easy to get to by car, just off Interstate 55 south of Downtown St. Louis. There is no Metrolink stop nearby, so taking the train is not a good option. MetroBuses do run to Soulard, but with plenty of free parking, the best option for many is to drive.

Other Soulard Attractions

Soulard is a historic neighborhood that hosts a popular Mardi Gras celebration in February and an Oktoberfest party in October. The Soulard Farmers Market also draws crowds year-round, so there's plenty to see and do after your brewery tour if you're visiting at those times.

Popular Soulard Restaurants

If you're hungry before or after your tour, Soulard has some great restaurants that are worth a try. Barbecue lovers should stop in at Bogarts Smokehouse for its fantastic brisket, pulled pork, and ribs. McGurk's Irish Pub has been a popular destination for decades with its upscale pub grub, cold Guinness, and authentic Irish music. Another good bet is Molly's where you'll find drink specials, a wide variety of bistro fare, and live music.

Very good tour was very knowledgeable guy who took us to several locations where they made their own brew and it tasted very good.

This tour was just the right amount of information and fun for me. If you want an in depth tour of every single brewery, this isn't it. If you want to be able to ask each brewery 100 questions, this tour is also probably not for you. Our bus driver gave us a quick background of each brewery, which is all I was really interested in. Urban Chestnut was able to give us more attention and provide more details of their brewery, but the other 3 were a bit busier by the time we got there. Overall, I really enjoyed all 4 breweries, the transportation/ride itself, and of course the beer! I would definitely do this tour again, but would like to see the schedule for Saturdays & Sundays to switch up a bit. Like most people, the weekends are when I have time to do this kind of thing, and I wouldn't want to do the same 4 all the time.

This was such a great time!! Casey is great, very knowledgeable, and super fun! Urban Chestnut and Heavy Riff were the favorites of my husband and I during our tour! We would definitely do another tour to hit up the other brewery's they tour has to offer!! Keep up the awesome work, as I know you will!! See ya next time!!

SUMMARY: Not for ardent beer fans and lovers, for tourists. If you're NOT an avid, big beer person this tour will be good for you. They hit up 4 breweries on this last tour. The only solid one for beer lovers was 4 hands, which was GREAT. I don't know how they pick their breweries but it is not from the quality of their beer always. Morgan Street is a horrible tourist trap which mainly operates as a restaurant and makes beer. This beer is watery, flavorless and laughable. I assume its there for a captive audience whom cannot choose otherwise once there. We were reminded several time about our last stop, Alpha Brewery, that they only had "1 bartender and were not able to serve us more than 1 or 2 samples" It seems that this place was not ready to accommodate a tour and struggled. it felt as though we were inconveniencing the bartender who I regularly heard making statements about how frustrated she was with dealing with all of us. It made me feel uncomfortable asking for beer. The bus was clean, cool and the guide was great. Timing was great and the amenities were perfect. If you are serious about a beer tour of St. Louis i'd follow Beer Advocate's ratings and Uber from spot to spot or ask a few locals. This tour will only take you to mostly weak and bland spots for tourists. I appreciate helping small local breweries but this is for tourists who dont care for inventive beer and just want something to do. My recommendations for St Lou would be : Earthbound, Perennial, 4-Hands, Civil Life.

Photo of Terri E.

Would give 0 stars but I can't. Booked the tour for weekend getaway for my husband weeks in advance. Sent him off to St. Louis for the weekend. Day of tour get an email that my booking had been cancelled. No notice, no explanation. Just cancelled and refunded. No apologies. When I called to get more info, they didn't care that the trip to St Louis was specifically for this. Just a "sorry. We refunded your money." Unreliable service. Don't use.

What an awesome time this is!! Do it - you won't regret it. We had a blast and I can't wait to take out-of-town friends on this fun excursion! Casey, you rock!! Keep up the good times!!

Photo of Bonnee C.

It was a fun trip! Casey is hilarious! I enjoyed the Urban Chestnut the best. I hope to go again sometime soon.

Photo of Lee N.

If you live here and havent done this, shame on you! If you visit, I highly recommend! You get four breweries for $35 each. The driver is super cool and you can drink on the bus. The first brewery is solid, educated staff, great atmosphere great beer. They are the most generous with their product of all four. Second brewery had slow service and you can only try one beer for free. Third brewery was just depressing. Fourth will get you back in the game and finish feelin fine. Try dat bad boy

Photo of Alesia B.

I'm not a beer drinker at all..However, I had a GREAT time with the tour and our driver Casey! Casey, I hope you see this post! Keep up the good work your're definitely a people person..the owner is lucky to have an awesome lady working for him!!!

Photo of Stefanie V.

This was such a fantastic and fun adventure. Let me start by saying that Casey, our driver, was both incredible and informative. My group took up the whole bus so we were able to decide on the number of places we wanted to visit and limited it to 3. Being for the most part locals, we were pretty familiar with the breweries we chose. Urban Chestnut, Heavy Riff, and 4 Hands did not disappoint. The tour included one or more 5oz samples and some historical information about each location. Casey made our tour so much fun with her bubbly personality. The company was great and the night was wonderful. We will definitely be booking again down the road. Thanks so much Brewery Tours of St Louis!

Schlafly Bankside

About Schlafly Bankside

The Saint Louis Brewery, makers of Schalfly brand beers, opened it’s doors in 1991 as the first new brewpub to open in St. Louis, MO since Prohibition. When we opened twenty-five years ago we had no business plan but we did have a vision: To make great beer and great food and try to have fun doing it. Twenty years on, our business plan is still almost as simple as our original vision: To make a wide variety of great beers, sell as much as we can in our local market, and throw great parties. Today, we are the largest locally owned brewery in the city. Every year, we brew around fifty styles of fresh Schlafly beer. We have a unique style for every beer lover.

The historic Schlafly Bankside was officially established in 2020 as we looked to expand our community-focused brewpub philosophy.  The riverside structure’s history is rooted in the story of Westward expansion, sitting just a few steps from the original launching site of the famed Lewis and Clark Expedition.

The site of the building was originally identified as an ideal site for a gristmill in 1769 and was improved upon in 1788 by Pierre Choteau (Choteau being a famed St. Louis name). After a devastating flood, the building was converted into St. Charles’ first woolen mill in 1851. Over the next century, the building would see many different occupants and uses, from a prison ran by the Union, to a tomato canning facility. After a fire in 1966, the building was restored to what it is today.
