Best, Worst, and Most Political Moments of the 2024 BRIT Awards: U.K.’s Top Night in Music
T he BRITs is an annual night of celebration for the music industry in the U.K., with the nation’s most talented and impactful artists honored for their successes. While the focus is on homegrown talent, international acts are also recognized for their contribution to music. The ceremony—often thought of as the U.K.’s answer to the Grammy Awards —is known for delivering incredible performances, which often go down in history. Perhaps none is more iconic than the Spice Girls’ 1997 medley of their hit songs “Wannabe” and “Who Do You Think You Are.” Thanks in part to the Union Jack dress adorned by Geri Halliwell (aka Ginger Spice), the performance is still spoken of today, especially when the subject of the BRITs comes up. While few BRITs moments since have managed to reach that stratospheric level of fame, there’s still a bevy of landmark performances to enjoy each year.
At the 2024 ceremony, which took place at London’s O2 Arena on Saturday, March 3, Australian superstar Kylie Minogue performed a streamlined medley of her greatest hits, in honor of her winning the coveted Global Icon Award. The “Padam Padam” singer was presented with the trophy by Dua Lipa, who also performed at the event, and took to the stage elsewhere in the show to accept the Best Pop Act award. Lipa beat out London-born singer Raye for the achievement, marking the only loss among Raye’s seven nominations. It was a wildly successful night for Raye. With six wins, she broke the record for the most gongs awarded to a single act in one night. The previous record of four was held by Adele, Harry Styles, and Blur.
It was a full-circle moment for Raye, who is a former pupil of London’s BRIT School, which is partially funded by the BRIT Trust. Some of the proceeds from the annual BRIT awards go toward the school, which is free to attend. Other notable alumni include Adele and Amy Winehouse. As well as celebrating the successes of former pupils, the BRITs, along with its sponsor, Mastercard, efforts a Next Generation campaign, aiming to spotlight and nurture up-and-coming talent. At the 2024 ceremony, Raye shared a sweet reunion with her old headteacher, Stuart Walden, and encouraged greener musicians to not give up.
Alongside performances and noteworthy acceptance speeches, there were also surprise cameos and skits along the way, and some rather impressive presenters.
See below for the best and worst moments from the 2024 BRIT Awards.
Most elevated performance
Dua Lipa made sure her show-opening performance of “Training Season” was one to remember and hard to miss. While BRIT-winner Lipa initially stayed grounded for the event, her dancers were suspended high above the stage in a circle formation ahead of her set, only to hurtle down to the stage mid-performance. They then lifted the singer into the air. You could say that Lipa and her creative team got things off to a flying start.
Most political statement
The BRITs aired on U.K. television network ITV, which is also known for its prominent dramas. One such drama, a short series titled Mr Bates vs the Post Office, debuted on the channel earlier this year. Based on the real-life Post Office scandal, the program explored the years-long debacle whereby Post Office employees were wrongfully convicted of fraud because of faulty software. The show tells the story with a focus on former sub-postmaster Alan Bates, who led the campaign for justice at the High Court. Victims of the scandal waited years to get convictions overturned and are still chasing compensation.
At the BRITs 2024, former sub-post office operator Jo Hamilton presented an award alongside actor Monica Dolan, who portrayed her in the ITV drama. Hamilton used the highly-watch moment to campaign for those who, like herself, were unfairly prosecuted. Calling out the authorities, she said: "I want to thank everyone in the country for the love and support they have given the postmasters. Please can you keep on supporting us because, despite what the government says, they’re not paying the postmasters.”
Best nostalgia hit
Global Icon Award winner Kylie Minogue continues to dominate the music charts each decade, and even won a Grammy Award earlier this year on account of her viral song “Padam Padam.” Alongside singing her more recent hit single, Minogue also delivered a welcome dose of nostalgia, belting out her beloved 2001 song “Can't Get You Out of My Head” before launching into her sultry 2010 track “All the Lovers.” Our only complaint about her set? It wasn’t quite long enough for our liking.
Sweet and sour moment
The live crowd erupted into applause when Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong and Tré Cool took to the stage to present the International Group of the Year Award (which ended up going to Boygenius). It’s an award they’ve previously won themselves, so it was fitting they should be the ones to present it. However, the sweetness was somewhat undercut by a sour aftertaste, with the downside of their appearance being that they didn’t take to the stage to perform during the night. Perhaps next year, instead!
A wickedly good cameo
Bridgerton ’s very own Jonathan Bailey, who will star opposite Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo in the big screen adaptation of the musical Wicked , presented Raye with the Artist of the Year award. The actor said it was an “unbelievable honor” to hand over the gong, and later attended Raye’s BRITs after-party.
Best no-show
Miley Cyrus won the International Song of the Year award for her hit 2023 track “Flowers.” She couldn’t be in attendance, so sent a short acceptance speech via video, which ended up being one of the highlights of the night. Wearing a sparkly, backless minidress, Cyrus turned around and said: “Thanks for giving me somewhere to wear this dress.” She signed off by quipping: “I know this video is a little short, but I just wanted it to match my dress. Thank you.”
Best family moment
When collecting her sixth and final award of the night, the coveted British Album of the Year gong, Raye brought her grandmother, Agatha, on stage. The duo hugged and shared a sweet moment, as the visibly emotional singer admitted she was overwhelmed. Raye, born Rachel Agatha Keen, gets her middle name from her gran, who she thanked in front of the live audience.
Best new power duo
Alison Owen, known for her roles in 2023 blockbuster Saltburn and the TV adaptation of Sally Rooney’s Conversations with Friends , walked onto the stage with none other than singer Charli XCX. With their dark, long dresses complimenting each other, the duo joined forces to present DJ Calvin Harris with the Dance Act award.
Most traitorous appearance
Much like in the U.S., hit reality show The Traitors has a strong hold on U.K. audiences. The most recent season finished airing on BBC One in January, but mother-and-son duo, fan favorites Diane and Ross, returned to the small screen for a fun cameo at the BRITs. Dressed in the famed Traitors cloaks they, along with the ceremony’s main hosts, teased Raye’s upcoming performance by writing her name down on a chalkboard in a similar fashion to what is done on the reality show.
paul just couldn't perform next... but @raye can. #BRITs pic.twitter.com/JrII9OIAix — BRIT Awards (@BRITs) March 2, 2024

UK Choristers' 'Night on Broadway' returns with Disney magic March 23
LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 11, 2024) — The University of Kentucky Choristers brings back the beloved annual Night on Broadway (NOB) to the Singletary Center Recital Hall stage Saturday, March 23, with two performances of “ A Magical Night on Broadway ”
This year, the UK Choristers’ musical theatre showcase will feature hits from "The Little Mermaid," "Mary Poppins," "Beauty and the Beast," "Tarzan" and more that will undoubtedly make us all feel the magic of Disney.
" This show is a favorite of both performers and patrons alike,” said Beth Wilson , D.M.A ., conductor of UK Choristers.
The oldest performing organization on campus, UK Choristers represents a wide variety of majors. The 95-voice mixed choir specializes in choral repertoire of all periods and styles, both a cappella and accompanied. Choristers was a featured performing choir at both the 2021 and 2022 KMEA Conferences. Additionally, the ensemble performs a major work each year with UK Symphony Orchestra as well as regular on and off campus concerts and frequent tours throughout the region.
“Night On Broadway has been my favorite performance that I have done at UK every year, ” said UK Choristers co-president Jasmine Sturgeon, an arts administration major minoring in percussion. “This year’s theme being Disney has been the most exciting! At each rehearsal, you can feel the collective pride and excitement. NOB will forever hold a special place in my heart, and I hope that everyone comes to experience it from the seats.”
"A Magical Night on Broadway" will take center stage at 3 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at the Singletary Center Recital Hall. Tickets are $17 for students, $34 for adults, plus additional ticketing fees. Tickets may be purchased online at scfatickets.com or by calling the Singletary Center box office at 859-257-4929 .
UK Choristers are part of the School of Music at the UK College of Fine Arts . The school has garnered a national reputation for high-caliber education in opera, choral and instrumental music performance, as well as music education, music therapy, composition, theory and music history.
As the state’s flagship, land-grant institution, the University of Kentucky exists to advance the Commonwealth. We do that by preparing the next generation of leaders — placing students at the heart of everything we do — and transforming the lives of Kentuckians through education, research and creative work, service and health care. We pride ourselves on being a catalyst for breakthroughs and a force for healing, a place where ingenuity unfolds. It's all made possible by our people — visionaries, disruptors and pioneers — who make up 200 academic programs, a $476.5 million research and development enterprise and a world-class medical center, all on one campus.
In 2022, UK was ranked by Forbes as one of the “Best Employers for New Grads” and named a “Diversity Champion” by INSIGHT into Diversity, a testament to our commitment to advance Kentucky and create a community of belonging for everyone. While our mission looks different in many ways than it did in 1865, the vision of service to our Commonwealth and the world remains the same. We are the University for Kentucky.

Oscars 2024 aiming for a bigger audience, but that may be beyond Ken
An earlier time, an embarrassment of superstars and Ryan Gosling’s live turn will, it’s hoped, boost viewers. But it’s not clear the audience is coming back
On Sunday night in Los Angeles at the Dolby theatre one name from Hollywood’s recent past will ring out louder than any other: not Cillian or Emma but Ken .
There will be 65 of them to be precise , joining Ryan Gosling on stage as he performs I’m Just Ken from Barbie whose cast has been all over the Oscars’ pastel pink promotional videos alongside fourth time host Jimmy Kimmel.
Despite the fact Barbie isn’t expected to win beyond Billie Eilish for best original song and another for best costume design (Gosling is an outside bet for best supporting male), Greta Gerwig’s film has been placed at the centre of an award’s show that is desperately trying to reconnect with its audience.
The Oscars’ executive producers Raj Kapoor, Katy Mullan, and Molly McNearney have pledged they are “ going big ” this year and in truth, their event sorely needs some of Barbie’s star wattage.
Ratings for the Oscars have been unimpressive since the turn of the decade. Last year 18.7 million viewers tuned in to watch Jimmy Kimmel host, the third worst performance ever, after 2022’s dismal 15.4 million and 2021’s nadir of 10.4 million viewers .
That trend has forced the Academy and ABC (the American broadcaster with rights to the Oscars) to change tack in a bid to revive an event, which at its peak commanded an audience of more than 50 million.
Part of the solution has been practical – the producers have brought the start time forward an hour to try and make it more primetime. But they are relying heavily on the appeal of Barbie to create an evening refocused on a broad, family audience.
Arguably part of the downturn in fortunes and viewing figures has been because fewer people are interested in films the Oscars has embraced and championed.
Parasite , 2020’s surprise best picture winner took $262m at the global box office, while 2021’s best picture Nomadland , took just shy of $40m . Last year’s best picture, the all-action genre-defining Everything Everywhere All at Once , hauled in $143m , an amount dwarfed by Barbie’s $1.5bn and Oppenheimer’s global box office, which stands just shy of $1bn .
The cultural phenomenon of Barbieheimer gives producers a gift as they attempt to reinvigorate Hollywood’s biggest night: a chance to embrace both the low and high culture of cinema, which millions of people have actually seen.
Christopher Nolan’s awards season juggernaut Oppenheimer looks nailed on to dominate the evening awards-wise, while Barbie can provide the softer cultural cut-through to a younger audience. The other thing Gosling’s performance could engineer is the holy grail for producers: viral moments that travel way beyond the boundaries of the broadcast into the wider culture and give them the much coveted social media “reach”.
This year producers say they’re moving away from the “ big, pre-produced, celebrity-heavy comedy bits ” involving Kimmel and a cast of guests. “We can only plant the seeds and hope things will happen naturally and spontaneously,” pledged Kapoor. It’s safe to say last year’s laboured exchanges between Kimmel and the donkey from The Banshees of Inisherin won’t be repeated.
In their place will come starry celebrity hosts announcing the winners. Bad Bunny, Chris Hemsworth, Dwayne Johnson, Michael Keaton, Regina King, Jennifer Lawrence, Kate McKinnon, Rita Moreno, John Mulaney, Catherine O’Hara, Octavia Spencer, Ramy Youssef, Mahershala Ali, Nicolas Cage, Jamie Lee Curtis, Brendan Fraser, Jessica Lange, Matthew McConaughey, Lupita Nyong’o, Ke Huy Quan, Sam Rockwell, Michelle Yeoh and Zendaya are all confirmed. Michelle Pfeiffer and Al Pacino will also both appear, leading to speculation of a Scarface reunion.
The other question hanging over the awards is will anyone mention the Israel-Gaza war ? Historically, Hollywood has had no problem ignoring geopolitical events on its biggest night, but the scale of protest in the US and around the world, plus the subject matter of the films, might make that difficult on Sunday.
There have been protests such as the ones which disturbed the Independent Spirit awards and there could be more on Sunday that could force a conversation that few in Hollywood seem to want to have. “It’s too fraught,” one studio executive told the New York Times after the Independent Spirit protest. “People are worried about their careers.”
The Zone of Interest producer James Wilson is one of the few nominees who has drawn attention to the conflict during awards season, while picking up an award at the Baftas. If Jonathan Glazer’s Holocaust drama is successful again will Wilson repeat his speech? And if he does, will others follow?

New to TTG?
Travel industry awards to recognise smarter, better, fairer travel businesses.
Entries for The Travel Industry Awards 2022 by TTG are now open – with new categories and a greater focus on sustainability and innovation.
New submission forms will require businesses and individuals to demonstrate how they have aligned with TTG Media’s own mission, by working smarter, by better serving their customers, and by championing sustainability and fairer travel. New categories this year include Accessible Holidays Provider of the Year, to champion brands doing most to welcome travellers with accessibility requirements, and two categories to recognise – separately – sustainability projects focusing on the environment and others focusing on local communities.
A New Agent of the Year category, meanwhile, will recognise sales consultants who’ve worked in an agent role for 18 months or less.
There are 10 categories for agent-facing suppliers, which will be judged through a combination of travel agent ratings and written submissions, judged by senior winning travel agents from TTG’s Top 50 Travel Agencies 2022.
All other categories will be judged by panels of relevant, senior travel industry figures in July.
Select categories, including Family Holidays Provider and UK & Ireland Holidays Provider of the Year, are also open to direct-sell brands.
‘See you there’
TTG Media CEO Daniel Pearce said: “In 2021, we delivered our first new awards programme to huge acclaim. This year, we’re planning an even more incredible event, championing those that are working to promote a smarter, better, fairer travel industry.
"We’re thrilled to announce JetBlue as our headline partner – a company as passionate about sustainability as TTG is. September 29 promises to be another fantastic evening – we can’t wait to see you all there.”
Entries for agent, supplier and selected special categories are now open.
Travel agent categories are free to enter, while suppliers can currently take advantage of an early-bird entry rate of £199+VAT until 1 April, when the cost per category will increase to £249+VAT.
All submissions close on 29 April.

University of Nebraska Block and Bridle honoree
John Miller, President and founder of Oxbow Animal Health, will be recognized as the 2024 Block and Bridle Club honoree. Since 1938, the Block and Bridle Club has recognized individuals who contributed to Nebraska agriculture through leadership, service, youth projects, community activities, and involvement with the university. The candidates are nominated by industry leaders and selected by the club officers and advisors.
Miller, a 1972 University of Nebraska-Lincoln graduate with a degree in Agricultural Engineering, and his wife, Pat, returned to Murdock, Nebraska following his uncle’s passing in 1973. The Miller farm was a traditional grain, hay, and livestock operation, but John’s interest in marketing and value-added agriculture led him to start Oxbow Hay Company in 1980. After researching the pet food and products market and evaluating the feasibility of marketing his premium alfalfa hay to this segment of the industry, Oxbow Pet Products was established in 1992 and its Alfalfa Nibbles product was introduced into the pet food marketplace. The increasing use of the internet allowed for direct sales from business to consumer, and Oxbow became the first to market 12 products specifically designed to provide premium nutrition to the small herbivore market. Veterinarians treating small animals embraced the premium nutrition provided by Oxbow’s products and were instrumental in helping the Oxbow brand gain placement throughout the U.S. and the world. John’s agricultural engineering background guided company innovations throughout the years, as he designed many of the machines and systems used to produce their products, including the machine used to produce their “Harvest Stacks,” which reduced dust by 80 percent and space used by loose hay by 75 percent.
Miller’s innovation led to rapid growth that now positions Oxbow Animal Health as a global leader in small animal nutrition. Its products are the preferred provider in Petsmart, Petco, and Chewy locations. The company was named the Small Business Association’s National Exporter of the Year in 2006 and was recognized as the 2015 Pet Age ICON Award Winner, which is awarded to pet industry leaders that have shown over 20 years of commitment to the success of the pet industry based on experience, integrity, and leadership.
Youth education and outreach have always been a priority at the company, providing programs such as Oxbow Vet Camps, which provide a science-based curriculum on rabbit and small animal care and medicine, and sponsoring 4-H Youth Development programs to improve rabbit care and husbandry. Its Educational Partnership Program (EPP) in Vet School and Vet Tech Programs is present in 30 veterinary schools and 30 vet tech schools across the country.
John continues to be active at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He is a member of the Nebraska Ag Builders and previously served on its Board of Directors. He serves on the advisory board for both the Department of Food Science and the Engler Entrepreneurship Program, and programs he developed at Oxbow Animal Health continue to provide scholarships in Animal Science, Food Technology for Companion Animals, Biological Systems Engineering, and the professional program in Veterinary Medicine. Oxbow also offers scholarships to students interested in pursuing careers in the pet industry or the field of animal health and nutrition to high school, undergraduate, vet school, and vet tech students. They also welcome classes to tours of facilities and encourage staff members to provide lectures for university courses. He has provided financial and personnel support to UCARE research projects, has provided discounted access to Oxbow products to Veterinary Medicine students, and has also placed a high priority on filling positions at Oxbow Animal Health with Nebraska graduates.
Miller is also very active in the small animal, hay, and agricultural industries. He was a member of the Nebraska Agriculture Leadership Council’s LEAD program, including serving a term as its alumni association president, is a member of the National Hay Association, and was a founding member of the Nebraska Alfalfa Marketing Association. He currently serves on its board after having previously served as president of the association.
Young Alumni of Distinction
Joeli Walrath, B.S. 2019, will be honored with the Young Alumni of Distinction award. Walrath was an active student while at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, participating on the Husker Equestrian team from 2016-19, the Horse Judging team from 2016-17, was a member of the University of Nebraska Rodeo Association from 2016-19, and was a member of the Pre-Vet club from 2016-17. From 2018-19, Walrath served as the executive board promotions officer for the rodeo association, promoting the program to the public and assisting in recruiting efforts through the creation of promotional materials and educating individuals on the performance of the team and club.
She earned the crown of Miss Rodeo Nebraska 2020 and served in the role from June 2019 through December 2021, traveling throughout the state of Nebraska and the country to educate the public about the state of Nebraska and its agriculture, and to promote the professional sport of rodeo. Unable to travel during the pandemic, Walrath used her experience and skills to pivot her promotional responsibilities by using social media, creating a podcast, hosting online coloring contests for children, and even visiting local nursing homes on horseback to interact with residents outside of their windows to spread some joy during hard times. She later concluded her role as Miss Rodeo Nebraska by finishing as third runner-up in the Miss Rodeo America pageant during the National Finals Rodeo.
She later became the Communications Director at the USDA Meat Animal Research Center in Clay Center, Nebraska, in 2023. In her current role, Walrath communicates with producers and educates the public about agriculture by serving as a representative of the center, and having her work published both locally and nationally.
She continues to serve the community as a board member for both the Miss Nebraska Rodeo Association and Sherman County Prevention Coalition.
Undergraduate of Distinction
Bryan Buss DVM, MPH, DACVPM CDC, B.S. 1995, will be honored with the Undergraduate of Distinction award. Following his graduation from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, he earned his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Iowa State University in 1989. He spent the next 15 years working in Nebraska as a mixed animal veterinary practitioner before returning to college to earn a Master’s in Public Health in 2005 from the University of Iowa.
As a CDC Career Epidemiology Field Officer and Veterinary Epidemiologist with the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services since 2008, Dr. Buss began serving as de facto Nebraska Deputy State Epidemiologist, State Public Health Veterinarian, and as a subject matter expert in epidemiology with the State Homeland Security team in 2013. He served as the Senior Epidemiology Lead and Branch Director during Nebraska’s responses to both Ebola virus disease and Avian Influenza. He also assisted in separate investigations of high rates of MRSA among high school sports participants in Nebraska, and a group of illnesses among 24 people that used swimming pools. His efforts in these investigations helped lead to a sustained reduction in MRSA cases among Nebraska high school athletes and the demonstrated benefits of improving pool operator training. All 900 Nebraska public pools now require operator training and certification.
Since 2011, Dr. Buss has managed Nebraska’s Rabies Control Program. His training of staff in 19 local health departments throughout Nebraska allowed the investigations of more than 700 potential rabies exposures per year, leading to a documented annual medical cost savings of more than $500,000 by avoiding unneeded rabies post-exposure prophylaxis. He was the recipient of a formal letter of commendation from agency management for his exceptional senior leadership.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Dr. Buss had logged 3,612 response hours in the CDC’s time-tracker by the end of 2021, including 116 straight days in early 2020 where he averaged 9.5 hours/day, including weekends and holidays, as part of the response. He served as the State’s liaison working alongside federally deployed colleagues managing quarantine activities of repatriated Americans from both Wuhan and the Diamond Princess cruise ship. He went on to serve in four senior leadership roles in Nebraska’s response efforts, first as the overall lead for the state’s early response, next as leader of the Laboratory and Community Testing Work Stream, as Nebraska’s Vaccine Planning Epidemiology lead, and finally as the lead on efforts to develop processes for reinfection and vaccine breakthrough infections to enhance case investigations.
Dr. Buss has authored 15 peer-reviewed publications and 14 CDC Morbidity & Mortality Weekly Report publications, including Nebraska’s Rabies Investigation Guidelines, the Information Sharing and Epidemiology and Surveillance Sections of Nebraska’s Ebola and Zika Response Plans, and critical populations sections of the state’s COVID-19 Vaccine Plan. He also holds an appointment as an Adjunct Associate Professor of Epidemiology in the College of Public Health at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, volunteers to teach epidemiology and public health, and serves as a student mentor, career counselor, and capstone project preceptor.
Graduate of Distinction
Collette Schultz Kaster, M.S., 1991, will be honored with the Graduate of Distinction award. Following her graduation from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, she started her career with Pig Improvement Company (PIC) as part of a team working to improve swine genetics to improve animal health and productivity, while also meeting export quality demands. She moved on to the Premium Standard Farms company to help establish a state-of-the-art, fully integrated pork company that would become a standard of quality and animal welfare in the industry. Following its acquisition by Smithfield, Collette served as the Vice President of Quality Technical Services from 2007-11 and later as Senior Vice President of Quality Technical Services and Livestock Procurement from 2011-16. She was responsible for all hog procurement at eight large-scale pork processing facilities with a total annual purchase value of $2.5 billion as well as the entire Quality Assurance and Technical Service teams.
She went on to be named the Executive Director of the Professional Animal Auditor Certification Organization (PAACO), an internationally recognized nonprofit organization that certifies animal welfare audits and auditors for all species, in 2016. Under her leadership, PAACO has implemented additional training modules, has served as a primary trainer in meat, poultry, swine, and beef cattle feedlot training, and coordinates outreach to all sectors of the livestock and meat industries. In 2019, Collette was named CEO of the American Meat Science Association (AMSA). Under her leadership, AMSA has expanded its membership to both international markets and suppliers to the meat industry. She oversees the annual Reciprocal Meat Conference and creates programs that develop students and youth for careers in the meat and agricultural industries. She continues to lead both organizations to this day.
Collette serves as a mentor to students and young professionals, serving on the board of directors for Women’s Meat Industry Network (WMIN), and is active in Minorities in Agriculture, Natural Resources and Related Sciences (MANRRS). She also continues to advocate for the role and purpose of meat, with her involvement in the inaugural Societal Role of Meat and Livestock Summit held in Dublin, Ireland in 2022, and in its next event in October 2024 in Denver, Colorado.
