Currency in India

Before you travel, you can acquire rupees at most banks, travel agencies, and even AAA. Visiting the bustling streets, tourists can visit local bazaars, take in exciting festival celebrations, eat at exceptional restaurants, and view astounding architectural marvels. That said, be prepared for litter and signs of poverty. These are commonplace in India's capital and can be a bit striking to outsiders.

Among the most significant historical destinations in Delhi is the Red fort. Built by the same architect as the Taj Mahal, the Red Fort was created when Mughal emperor Shah Jahan moved the capital to Delhi in 1638.

As the capital, Delhi is a crucial hub for transportation, education, and the Indian economy. Within the city limits there are some of the most important government buildings, business headquarters, and scholarly universities in the country. If you have business in India, odds are you will wind up in Delhi at some point.

Mumbai (formerly Bombay)

If Delhi is India's political capital, then the island city of Mumbai can be easily labeled as the business capital. Home to Dalal Street (think India's version of Wall Street) Mumbai is the witness to the countries economic ups and downs. It is also a popular destination for those seeking some of the best eateries and night life in India.

Culturally, Mumbai is more diverse than other parts of India. As a business epicenter, the city is host to a constant blend of various religions and nationalities. It is also home to some of the most awe-inspiring temples, palaces, and monuments. Some are remnants of British colonial rule, while others are popular cultural heritage sites spanning many of the diverse religions practiced in India.

Mumbai is also home to Bollywood (the Indian film industry). Tours of Film City (in the western suburb of Goregaon) are available.

Hotels in India

There are a number of questions to be answered before finding the right choice of hotel for your India trip:

• What are your individual interests and needs?
• Are you seeking relaxation, adventure, or both?
• Are creature comforts essential or do you prefer the seclusion of a log cabin in the woods
• Would you prefer five-star luxury or old-world charm?

While planning your trip to India, consider the optimal location for your hotel. For instance, if you have a specific interest in India, say a wildlife reserve, it makes sense to stay as close to it as possible rather than book a hotel that requires you to spend time and energy commuting.

The available hotel options in India are as diverse as India itself. Depending upon your needs and wants, there will certainly be multiple options for you to consider.

Five Star Hotels in India

Often owned by prestigious names in the Indian Hotel industry such as the Taj or Oberoi, these offer the ultimate in terms of comfort and excellence in service. While most of the important chains do have hotels in major Indian destinations, hospitality here does come at a price.

Heritage Hotels in India

These were originally former palaces or mansions belonging to India's erstwhile princes or nobility that have now been converted into hotels. For a price, tourists can experience a slice of the history and romance of India's former royalty. Rajasthan, Mysore, Hyderabad are some of the Indian states where heritage hotels are located.

Eco-friendly Hotels in India

These hotels offer you a close communion with nature during your stay. Most of them are located in scenic locations - around forest reserves, hill stations or ecologically sensitive zones. While many such hotels in India are committed to the preservation of natural resources, others simply use eco-friendly language and labels a sales gimmick.

Wellness Centers or Spas in India

India is home to the holistic science of Ayurveda. As such, there are dedicated Ayurveda hotels that provide guests with massages, detoxification and fitness routines to rejuvenate the body and soul. Kerala, Karnataka, Himachal Pradesh, Rishikesh and Rajasthan are some of the most popular medical tourism locations in India.

Budget Hotels in India

While many budget hotels do offer decent accommodation and excellent food, the same cannot be said for all. Again while some have pleasant surroundings set in prime locales, others maybe no better than congested motels or hostels.

India's Festivals and Holidays

To enjoy your experience to the fullest and take in as much culture as possible, you may consider visiting India during the celebration of Diwali. This is an amazing festival and national holiday that lasts from mid-October to mid-November. Keep in mind that just about every popular tourist destination in the country will be more crowded, but there will certainly be a lot of celebrating and unique sights to take in. If you prefer a less crowded vacation, visit at another time of year.

• Diwali (Hindu): One of the most iconic Hindu festivals also known as the Festival of Lights. Clay lamps filled with oil are lit to symbolize good over evil and firecrackers are let off. Families gather sharing snacks and sweets.
• Christmas day (Christian): The commemoration of the birth of Jesus
• Day of Ashura (Islamic): The climax of the mourning of Muharram marks the anniversary of the death of the Prophet Muhammad's grandson in the Battle of Karbala.
• Mawlid (Islamic): Celebrates the birthday of Prophet Muhammad
• Eid ul-Fitr (Islamic): Marks the end of the Ramadan fast and is also known as the Sweet festival
• Eid al-Adha (Islamic): The honoring of Prophet Abraham who was willing to sacrifice his son on God's command as well as his son's willingness to be sacrificed (NOTE: This holiday is also referred to as Feast of the Sacrifice)

It is very important that you be aware of the different holidays in India so that you can plan your trip appropriately - whether you want to participate in the different activities and festivals or avoid the hustle and bustle altogether.

How to apply for or renew a U.S. tourist visa

If you visit the U.S. for tourism or business, you may need a visitor visa, also known as a tourist visa. Learn how to get and renew this type of nonimmigrant visa.

To enter the U.S., you must bring a passport issued by your country of citizenship along with your visa. Officials at your port of entry into the U.S. will also issue you a Form I-94, which electronically records your arrival and departure dates. Learn more about Form I-94 and how to apply .

How to renew a visitor visa

You must renew your visitor visa at a U.S. embassy or consulate abroad. Only diplomatic visa holders and their dependents can renew their visas within the U.S.

The process to renew a visitor visa is the same as getting one for the first time. Follow the process to apply for a visitor visa from the Department of State.

Please follow the steps below before your immigrant visa interview at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, India.

Step 1: Register your appointment online and submit fingerprints

You need to register your appointment online and schedule a time to visit the Visa Application Center (VAC) before your visa interview. At the VAC, you will provide fingerprints and take photos. Registering your appointment also provides us with the information we need to return your passport to you after your interview. Registration is free. Click the “Register” link below to register.

Medical Examination and Vaccination Instructions

List of Approved Panel Physician Sites

Now that you are intending to apply for an Immigrant/K visa, the U.S. Consulate General in Mumbai has authorized the physicians listed below to administer your medical examination. Please make your examination arrangements with any panel physician site on the list at least seven days before your immigrant visa appointment. 

Please carry the following items for each family member: 

• Original appointment letter;
• Passport; 
• Four recent photographs;
• All medical records of vaccinations, prior illnesses or treatments. You must discuss your medical history and current conditions, including, but not limited to, pregnancy, diabetes, hypertension and other conditions and medications taken, with the physician. 
• DS-260 confirmation page

These physicians are licensed to practice locally and the examinations they give to visa applicants conform to standards prescribed by the United States Public Health Service. Any attempt by an applicant to influence the panel physician’s medical judgment will reflect unfavorably on the visa application. 

The physician may need four to seven days to prepare the results of your medical examination. Collect the report from the panel physician and bring it to the Consulate on the day of your visa interview. 

* Adult examination includes: Physical exam, Chest X-Ray, VDRL, Gonorrhea testing, TB testing, TB screening, and TB treatment (if necessary), as required by the Technical Instructions.

* * Children 2-14 years examination includes: Physical exam, IGRA testing, TB screening, and TB treatment (if necessary) as required by the Technical Instructions.

Panel physicians who conduct medical examinations of immigrant and K visa applicants are required to verify that applicants have met certain vaccination requirements, or that it is medically inappropriate for an applicant to receive one or more of the following vaccinations:

DT/DTP/DTaP, Td, Polio (OPV/IPV), Measles (or MR or MMR), Mumps (or MMR), Rubella (or MR or MMR), Rotavirus, Hib (Haemophilus Influenzae Type B), Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Meningococcal, Varicella, Pneumococcal, and Influenza.

If you have already received some or all of the required vaccinations, you should bring your vaccination records with you to your medical exam for verification. Physicians at the panel sites listed below can determine which of the listed vaccinations are medically appropriate for you given your age, medical history, and current medical condition. Only vaccinations verified or administered at the panel sites listed below will be accepted by the Consulate.

After the medical exam

When your examination is completed, the doctor will either provide you with exam results in a sealed envelope or send them directly to the U.s. Consulate. The physician may need four to seven days to prepare the results of your medical exam. You may need to return to the clinic at a later date to pick up your exam results. IF GIVEN AN ENVELOPE TO CARRY TO YOUR INTERVIEW,   DO NOT OPEN THIS ENVELOPE. Instead, bring it to your visa interview.

Any x-rays taken will be given to you. You DO NOT need to bring the x-rays to your visa interview unless you suffer from tuberculosis (TB). However, you must carry the x-rays with you when you travel to the United States for the first time. The medical report must be less than six months old when you enter the United States as an immigrant.

NOTE: Your visa interview will not be conducted if you do not have a completed medical report from the panel physician. In case of unexpected delays in processing of your medical report, please contact this office by email at [email protected] to reschedule your appointment.

Pre-Interview checklist

Please use the list below to determine the items that the applicant must bring to the immigrant visa interview:

A copy of your NVC interview letter (does not apply to Diversity Visa, fiancé(e), adoptive, or asylee/refugee applicants).

Unexpired passport valid for six (6) months beyond your intended date of entry to the United States  and  a photocopy of the biographic page.

Two (2) color photographs of each person applying for a visa (5 cm x 5 cm, or 2 inch x 2 inch).  Please review our  online photo requirements.

Confirmation page from the Form DS-260 Application for an Immigrant Visa you submitted online at  ceac.state.gov/iv .

Your  original  birth certificate , English translation,  and  a photocopy.

Medical examination results in a sealed envelope ( if the physician gives you these results) .

Original or certified copies of birth certificates for all children of the principal applicant (even if he or she is not accompanying).

Applicants who fall into any category below should bring these additional documents

For family-based visa applications:

• The appropriate  Form I-864 Affidavit of Support  for  each  financial sponsor along with a photocopy of the sponsor’s IRS transcript or most recent U.S. federal income tax return, and any relevant W-2s. 
• Proof of your U.S. petitioner’s status and domicile in the United States (photocopy of a U.S. passport, naturalization certificate, or lawful permanent resident card).
• Evidence of the relationship between the petitioner and visa applicant(such as photographs, letters, or emails).

If you are married : Your  original  marriage certificate, English translation,  and  a photocopy.

If you were previously married:   Your  original  divorce or spouse’s death certificate, English translation,  and  a photocopy.

If you are older than 16 years of age:   The  original   police certificate from your country of current residence and countries of previous residence. If these three items are  all  true, you must bring a more recent police certificate to the interview:

• You are older than 16 years of age;
• You obtained a police certificate and submitted it to NVC more than one year ago; and
• You still live in the country that issued the police certificate.

For employment-based visa applications:  A letter from your U.S. employer dated less than one month ago.

If you have ever been convicted of a crime:  Court and criminal records, English translation, and a photocopy.

If you have served in any country’s military:  Military records, English translation, and a photocopy.

If you are adopted:   Adoption papers or custody documents, English translation,  and  a photocopy.

If you are the petitioner’s stepchild:   The  original  marriage certificate of the petitioner and your biological parent, English translation,  and  a photocopy along with divorce records for any previous marriages of either parent.

If you need to send us any documents, please DO NOT mail them to us directly. Instead, visit ustraveldocs.com and ask for information on courier services. For some family-based and employment preference visa categories, a visa became available within the month you have been scheduled by NVC.  There is no guarantee that a visa will still be available on the date of your rescheduled interview . Please carefully consult the Visa Bulletin before you decide to reschedule your interview.

Please note: You need to register your original NVC/KCC appointment online (see Step 1 ) before you can reschedule it. Rescheduling is only possible on a date after your assigned appointment.

Security screening procedures

All visitors to the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi must follow certain security procedures. Any visitor who declines to be screened by U.S. Embassy security personnel will be unable to enter the embassy. To avoid delaying your entry and that of those in line behind you, please bring only what is required for your interview.

Accompanying persons

The following persons may accompany a visa applicant to their interview:

• Interpreter: Applicants may bring ONE interpreter if they do not speak English, Hindi, Punjabi, Malayalam, Tibetan, or Tamil well enough to participate in an interview.
• Special Needs Visitors: Applicants may bring ONE person to help if they are elderly, disabled, or a minor child.

Attorneys are not permitted to accompany clients into the waiting room or to their interview.

Immigrant visa fees

If you have not paid all required fees to either the National Visa Center or via the appointment website, please be prepared to pay these fees on the day of your interview. All fees may be paid in either U.S. dollars or the Indian Rupee equivalent. We accept cash and rupee bank drafts only. Bank drafts may only be from a nationalized or foreign bank and must be issued in the name of “American Embassy, New Delhi.” Check the consular rate of exchange at ustraveldocs.com the day before your interview. Please note that if you are found ineligible to receive a visa, the application fee cannot be refunded. A list of fees can be found Fees for Visa Services webpage .

Do not make travel plans outside of India

If your visa is approved, we will keep your passport at the embassy while we prepare your immigration packet and print a visa for your passport. We will return your passport to you later via courier services only (see Step 1 ). If you have to travel within India while your passport is still with us, please make sure you have a valid picture ID other than your passport.

After Your Visa Interview

A Consular officer can make a decision on a visa application only after reviewing the formal application and interviewing the applicant. There is no guarantee that you will receive a visa. Do not sell your house, car or property, resign from your job or make non-refundable flight or other travel arrangements until you have received your immigrant visa.

If more information is needed

Sometimes a Consular officer is unable to make a decision on a visa application because he/she needs to review additional documents or the case requires further administrative processing. When additional documents are requested, the Consular officer will give you a refusal letter that asks you to submit additional documents. The letter will include instructions on how to send those documents to the Embassy.

Administrative processing takes additional time after the interview. Most administrative processing is resolved within 60 days. However, the timing varies based on the circumstances of each case. Before inquiring about the status of administrative processing, please wait at least 60 days after your interview.

What happens after visa approval

Passport, Visa, and Sealed Immigrant Packet – We will place your immigrant visa on a page in your passport. Please review your visa to make sure there are no spelling errors. We will also give you a sealed envelope containing documents that you must give to U.S. immigration authorities when you arrive in the United States for the first time . Do not open this envelope. You must carry it with you; do not put it in your checked luggage. If you receive X-rays during your medical examination, carry those with you and give them to the U.S. immigration authorities.

USCIS Immigrant Fee – All individuals who are issued immigrant visas overseas must pay an Immigrant Fee to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) prior to traveling to the United States. This fee is for processing your residency status and printing your Permanent Resident Card. The only people exempt from paying this fee are: children entering the United States under the Hague Process, returning residents, and people traveling on a K visa.

When You Should Travel – You must enter the United States before the expiration date on your visa, which is usually six months from the date of printing. Your visa cannot be extended and all fees are nonrefundable. The principal applicant must enter before or at the same time as other family members with visas. Unless they are eligible for benefits under the Child Status Protection Act, children who are issued a visa before turning 21 years of age must enter the United States before their 21st birthday to avoid losing their immigrant status.

Getting a Green Card – Your Form I-551 Permanent Resident Card, also known as a green card, will be automatically mailed to the address in the United States that you write in your visa application form. This is a very important document that proves you have permission to reside in the United States. If you plan to travel outside the U.S. before your green card arrives: Please consult USCIS’s and CBP’s websites for rules about what documents you need to re-enter the country. Once your card is issued, you should not stay outside of the United States for more than one year. If you do, you will lose your status as a Lawful Permanent Resident.

Children’s Issues – In the United States, children are required to have certain vaccinations before they can enroll in school. We recommend that you bring your child’s complete vaccination records with you to the United States. If your child is adopted, you have full custody as a result of a divorce, or you share custody with another parent, you should bring a copy of all applicable adoption or custodial papers from the authoritative court in your home country. You will need these papers (translated into English) for issues such as school enrollment, medical care, and eventual citizenship.
