This slow-paced island nation is an exotic blend of rich cultures and dramatic natural beauty.
Smouldering vistas, rich cultural diversity, beach-blessed coastlines and languorous charm – this nation of more than 17,000 islands offers countless adventures and unforgettable experiences. Every island here seduces with its own vision of paradise. From the beautiful beaches and emerald interior of Bali – the fabled ‘Island of the Gods’ – and the stunning volcanic landscapes of Lombok, to the exotic shorelines of Komodo – the land of dragons, this picture-perfect archipelago really does have it all.
Our most popular island in Indonesia is Bali, where stunning natural beauty, spirituality and a rich cultural heritage abound. The southern coast of the island is one of the most popular spots, peppered with sun-drenched beaches, gourmet eateries and luxe beachside resorts. Head inland towards the central region of Bali and you’ll discover dramatic volcanoes, rolling rice terraces and the artsy hub of Ubud – the cultural heart of the island. Alternatively, you could stay on the more sedate island of Lombok, often described as the quieter and more unspoilt Bali. Off the north-west coast of Lombok, the three tiny Gili islands each entice with their own distinct personalities.
Whether you’re looking for an unspoilt beach escape or a dramatic volcano trek, talk to us and we’ll help design your ultimate Indonesia holiday.

Bali Twin Centre
Bali is Indonesia's 'Island of the Gods' and it's aptly named - this is a land of stunning natural beauty and friendly people who are proud of their ancient traditions and spirituality. You'll find the beach resorts that Bali is best known for on its southern shores, but there's so much more to Bali than its coastline. Venture inland, amid the lush rice terraces and dramatic valleys and you can cycle through rice terraces, go temple-hopping and take time out at wellbeing retreats. To really make the most of your stay on the island, we recommend at least 10 days and combining two or three places to stay as you travel around the island. During that time relax on the beach in the south or in the north (the north tends slightly wilder in feel and a bit more off the beaten track). For the more active, an early morning trek to see the sunrise from the top of Mount Batur is not to be missed, but other things to do to give you a sense of the culture of Bali include cooking classes, exploring local temples, shopping for local crafts and sampling local spa treatments that feature at most hotels.
Singapore & Bali
This trip is one of our favourite twostop holidays. You’ll begin in glittering Singapore, shopping on Orchard Road, taking in the views and post-sundown lightshow at Gardens by the Bay and sampling some of the best food in the Far East before heading for beautiful Bali. We recommend splitting your time here between the glorious beaches and the jungle-swathed interior, perhaps combining much-loved Seminyak with a stay up in the terraced hills surrounding Ubud, a busy but artsy town that’s full of charm.
Central Bali’s Highlights by Vintage VW Jeep
A vintage 1970s-style VW Jeep tour is one of the coolest ways to explore central Bali. Jump on board this classic icon and travel to your first stop: the 1000-year-old Batuan Temple, which is a village and ancestral temple that’s cared for by the residents of Batuan. Your driver will then continue through local villages to artsy Ubud – the cultural heart of Bali and a hub of traditional crafts and dance. Highlights here include impressive Puri Saren Agung Palace, the arts market and famous monkey forest, where playful brown macaques dart around the ancient trees and ornate statues. A scenic drive through rice fields and sleepy mountain villages then awaits to reach imposing Mount Batur. The view of the volcano, caldera and Lake Batur is breathtakingly beautiful, so make sure you’ve got your camera ready. Next up is a drive down into the crater to the lava fields, where you’ll have time to wander through the unique rock formations. Lunch-with-a-view will be served on the edge of the crater before your journey continues to the tranquil and lesser-visited temple of Pura Gunung Kawi Sebatu – a beautiful water temple built on a natural spring and surrounded by lotus ponds and thick forest. The final stop will be Tegallalang, where giant steps have been carved into the landscape to create lush rice terraces.
• Departing daily from South Bali, Seminyak or Central Ubud hotels • Operates year round • Private experience
Good to know We recommend bringing a light jacket or jumper and long trousers as it can get cool in the mountains. A sarong will be provided to allow you to cover up for temple visits.
Mount Batur Sunrise Trek
Watching the sun rise from the top of Bali’s Mount Batur is an unforgettable experience. A very early start awaits as we’ll need to start the climb around 4am to make sure we reach the summit in time for sunrise. Mount Batur is a 1717-metre-high active volcano to the north west of Mount Agung. The climb will take around two hours and we’ll reach the top just as the sun rises for a magical and peaceful moment high above the island. Tuck into a well-earnt breakfast and enjoy time to soak up the panoramic views over the volcanic landscape and mountain peaks and acknowledge your achievement. You’ll then head back down to base camp, where a soothing soak in hot springs will be waiting for you. This sunrise trek would be a fantastic adventure to add on to a honeymoon or beach holiday.
• Departing Monday, Thursday and Friday from South Bali, Seminyak, Ubud, Uluwatu and Candidasa hotels • Operates year round • Group experience
Good to know There are a number of things we recommend bringing for this trip: warm clothes, hiking shoes, long trousers, swimwear, camera and sun block. Your professional tour guide will provide a head lamp, walking sticks, gloves, hiking bag, rain coat and a small water bottle to make the climb much easier. This climb is classified as a medium level of difficulty, so a good level of fitness is required (as a guide, it’s suitable for those that enjoy hill walking).
Sunset at Uluwatu Temple & Dinner
Uluwatu Temple is one of the most photographed sites in all of Bali and you’ll instantly understand why. Sunset is a special time to visit this sacred clifftop temple, as the sun sinks into the ocean behind its peak. As well as the mesmerising views, this is clearly a cultural experience. The temple – which is inhabited by a lively monkey population! – is close to an amphitheatre where, during sunset, you can watch a spectacular Kecak Fire Dance performance. Once the sun has set, you’ll enjoy a mouth-watering seafood dinner: your boat-fresh catch of the day will be barbecued over coconut husks, ready for you to tuck into at your table on the stunning Jimbaran Bay beach. This is a must-do for couples looking for a romantic experience in a jaw-dropping setting.
• Departing daily from South Bali and Seminyak hotels • Operates year round • Private experience
Good to know This experience is only available for guests staying in the southern beach resorts.
Western Bali’s Highlights by Vintage VW Jeep
Bali’s colourful VW 181 Safari Jeeps are a classic sight around the island. They also provide a seriously cool way to explore. Jump on board for an adventure around western Bali to see some of the island’s most famous temples and stunning diverse landscapes. Your tour begins with a trip to Bali’s most popular attraction: the ancient sea temple shrine of Pura Tanah Lot, which is perched on a rock formation offshore. A morning visit will hopefully mean you’ll have a more tranquil experience. You’ll then be driven through villages and rice fields up into the mountains to the rainforested slopes of Batukaru volcano, home to impressive Pura Luhur Batukaru, which you’ll explore on a guided tour. A drive through Bali’s most spectacular rice terraces around UNESCO World Heritage-listed Jatiluwih follows, before you arrive at Bedugul, located 1200 meters above sea level. We’ll stop at Beratan Lake to visit beautiful Ulun Danu Temple, which sits in the middle of the lake, and have a buffet lunch in the tropical gardens. On our route back, we’ll head to a colourful local market so you can experience the buzz of local life and then look around a traditional Balinese family compound, which has a distinctive design, for an insightful end to the day.
• Departing daily from South Bali, Seminyak and Central Ubud hotels • Operates year round • Private experience
Good to know We recommend bringing a light jacket or jumper and long trousers as it can get cool in the mountains.
Gili Islands in a Day
If you’re short on time but can’t bear to miss out on Indonesia’s most idyllic tiny islands, this stunning day trip will give you a taster of what Gili Air, Gili Meno and Gili Trawangan are all about. Your first glimpse of these car-free islands, ringed with white sands and dotted with coconut palms, will be from the Malimbu Hill viewpoint on Lombok. You’ll then cross the sea by outrigger boat (be prepared to embrace your adventurous side and get a little wet!) to Gili Air. Here, you’ll have the choice to spend the day on a beautiful beach to swim, snorkel and sunbathe. Or, you can jump back on the outrigger to visit the two other Gilis: Gili Trawangan and Gili Meno. Gili Trawangan – nicknamed ‘Gili T’ – is the most popular of the three islands, but it’s still super low-key, with most of the activity centred around diving. Rustic Gili Meno is the most secluded island, perfect for lazing on coral sands and snorkelling with turtles. As each island has its own character and landscape, this is the perfect island-hopping day.
• Departing daily from Senggigi • Operates year round • Private experience
Lombok Beach Hopping
Head out on a laid-back day to play castaway on Lombok’s most unique beaches: a pink-sand beach and a secret island that only appears at low tide. Your day will begin with a visit to Indonesia’s second largest fish market. At Tanjung Luar – where most of the traders are women – you’ll buy fresh fish ready for your barbecue lunch. We’ll then hop on a boat to Sand Island: a tiny white-sand speck which, at hide tide, is completely submerged apart from its Indonesian marker flag. The next boat stop will be Maringkek, where you can step ashore and wander around the fishing village, before we continue to Pink Beach, which gets its name from the pink-hued sand. The nearby islands of Pantai Semangkuk and Gili Petelu offer the chance for snorkelling, while later in the afternoon, there’s time to relax on peaceful white sands at Pantai Sebui before your beach barbecue lunch and return boat trip.
Lombok Rice Terrace Trek
There’s no better way to get back to nature on Lombok than by donning your trainers and heading for the rice terraces. You’ll begin by getting a taste of local life with a visit to a traditional market in Narmada, before driving on to Sedau for the start of your two-hour soft trek through the beautiful rice terraces. This is a leisurely trek and along the way your guide will tell you about the different tropical plants that you spot. At the end of the hike, a rest and lunch-with-a-view awaits in Suranadi. You’ll also visit Gunung Sari to explore the temple of Pura Agung Gunung Sari, which makes an impression with its three pagoda-like places of worship. Heading north, we’ll cross the Pusuk Pass where you’ll see cheeky monkeys wandering around and causing mischief. The last stop is Malimbu to take in some of Lombok's best sandy beaches.
• Departing daily from Senggigi, Lombok • Operates year round • Private experience

Where is Indonesia? Indonesia is the largest country in the world to be made up entirely of islands – 17,000 in total. The archipelago sits in the southern hemisphere of Southeast Asia and is surrounded by the Indian Ocean and the Pacific. Java and Borneo are two of the largest islands, and, east of Java, Bali and Lombok – much smaller – make up part of the Lesser Sunda Islands. Just off Lombok’s coast, are the three tiny Gili Islands, fringed by white sands and coconut palms.
Bali Our most popular destination in Indonesia is Bali, a tropical island located in the westernmost end of the Lesser Sunda Islands. For its small size, Bali offers more than its fair share of attractions – from visits to temples and quaint local villages, to cycling around rice terraces and lounging on picture-perfect golden sands.
Idyllic islands With their dazzling white sands and emerald interiors, Lombok and the Gili Islands offer a more sedate atmosphere to popular Bali. Lombok lies to the east and is perfect if you’re looking for untouched beaches and excellent outdoor activities – the southern coastline is a surfer’s paradise, while the dominating Mount Rinjani is a magnet for walkers. Off the north-west coast of Lombok, the Gili Islands are exotic hideaways of white sands and bohemian-chic charm. Gili Trawangan is the most cosmopolitan, with great nightlife and luxury beachside resorts, while Gili Air is the most authentic of the islands, with a stunning coral reef and great local character. The smallest island is Gili Meno, the ultimate honeymoon haven with its gorgeous cluster of palm-fringed
Multi-centres To make the most of a Bali holiday, we recommend twinning a relaxing beach stay with a few nights in artsy Ubud, the cultural capital of the island. Pairing Bali with Lombok and the Gilis also makes for an excellent island-hopping beach holiday. Local airlines have several flights each day between Bali and Lombok, and it’s also easy to travel between the islands by boat. To get to the secluded Gilis you’ll need to hop on a boat from Bali or Lombok.
Diving & snorkelling Indonesia’s warm waters lie within the Coral Triangle, one of the richest underwater bio-diversities on the planet. There’s exceptional coral and reef fish diversity that range from clownfish and mola mola to reef sharks and manta rays. Bali, Lombok and the Gilis are some of the best islands in Indonesia to go snorkelling and diving. Off the north-west coast of Bali, Menjangan Island is famed for its dramatic underwater caverns and stunning corals, while the shallow reefs around Gili Trawangan and Gili Meno are great for snorkelling with sea turtles and colourful reef fish.
Food & drink Reflecting the contrasting cultures and landscapes within the archipelago, Indonesian cuisine can be quite varied and diverse. Many regions enjoy different specialities, and you might also notice hints of Chinese, Indian and European influences in the local food, depending on where you are. Throughout Indonesia, one thing you’ll find everywhere is rice, a staple to most traditional meals. You’ll also enjoy lots of tropical fruits and vegetables in the Indonesian diet, thanks to the islands’ rich, fertile soils and warm, humid climates. On a visit to Indonesia, popular local dishes to try include Nasi Goreng, a flavoursome fried rice dish, and Gado Gado, a tasty Indonesian-style salad.

Kuoni sees strong group potential in Indonesia
Contributors are not employed, compensated or governed by TD, opinions and statements are from the contributor directly
Kuoni is seeing a strong rise in demand for group tours from Indonesia, and expects this growth to continue in future.
The company brought 21 European hoteliers to Singapore and Jakarta this week, to meet with local agents. And speaking to Travel Daily today, David Painter, CEO of Kuoni Group Travel Experts, said he has high hopes for both these markets, and Indonesia especially.
“There is a lot of opportunity [in Indonesia] that’s barely been tapped,” Painter said. “We’ve seen growth rates of around 10 to 11% in the last four to five years and we expect this to continue in the foreseeable future.”
Painter added that Indonesia’s “vast population” means there’s a growing pool of potential visitors. “We consider Indonesia to be a bit like China, but about four to five years behind,” Painter said, adding that as Kuoni has recently started opening in more second tier Chinese cities, there will be similar are opportunities for the company in Indonesia in future.
In terms of the trends and opportunities of Indonesian group travel, Painter identified Muslim tourism as one of the biggest potential growth markets, and said that an increasing numbers of its European hotel partners are now catering for this, with halal food and organised prayer times.
Indonesian groups also tend to prefer longer tours (typically 10-12 days, and often up to 17 days) than their Singaporean counterparts, as well as multi-country tours, according to Painter.
And while Singaporean travellers tend to indulge in such activities as shopping and food, Indonesian groups have a preference towards sightseeing. The majority of Indonesian groups comprise first-time travellers, Painter noted.
Italy, France and Switzerland remain the leading destinations for group travellers from both Singapore and Indonesia, although demand is rising for Scandinavia and Eastern Europe.
Kuoni Group Travel Experts will be hosting a series of meetings between its “diamond tier” hotel partners and key travel agents in Singapore and Jakarta this week, to offer hoteliers a better insight into Southeast Asia’s emerging group travel markets. This follows the company’s inaugural Asian mission in China in 2014.

Best time to visit Bali
Most visitors think the best time to visit Bali is between May and August as conditions are warm and sunny. However, July and August in particular can be busy and our experts suggest May, June and September as the ideal months. That said, you can expect hot temperatures throughout the year, with temperatures ranging between 26-29°C, and only cooling slightly in the more central regions around Ubud and the mountains. Bali has two distinct seasons to bear in mind when deciding when to visit: the wet, falling between October and March, and the dry, spanning between April and September. The arrival of the dry season means hotter weather and an increase of sunny days, but with peak season coinciding with European summer holidays, it also means an increase in the number of visitors in July and August.
Bali Weather
Bali weather by month.
Bali in January January is typically Bali’s wettest month, though rainfall is not usually constant; you can expect hot sunny days with average temperatures of 26°C, but these will likely be interrupted with brief tropical downpours. In the higher regions around Mount Batur, temperatures are cooler and can drop to 15°C at night.
Bali in February The rainy season continues in February, with hot and humid days punctuated by intense periods of tropical rainfall. The temperatures stay at a consistent 26°C but with rough seas at this time, diving and snorkelling visibility around West Bali National Park are greatly reduced.
Bali in March March is another month where you can expect a high chance of afternoon rain showers. Days are hot, with temperatures increasing to an average of 27°C, and humidity can feel a little intense – for a respite, this is a great time to head inland to the cooler temperatures in Ubud.
Bali in April With Bali’s wet season coming to an end, the chance of rainfall this month starts to reduce significantly. You’ll enjoy mostly sunny days and temperatures will start to climb. With less winds along the coast, water visibility for diving and snorkelling off Bali’s east coast is very good.
Bali in May May is Bali’s hottest month, with temperatures averaging a maximum of 29°C. You can expect consistently dry and sunny weather, which makes for excellent diving and mountain climbing conditions. With the island not overly busy at this time, this is a great month to check for best value offers.
Bali in June One of the best months to visit Bali, June enjoys idyllic conditions with constant sunshine and a wonderfully warm average temperature of 27°C. You’re still not quite into the high season this month, so with visitor numbers fairly low you’ll enjoy less crowded hotels, beaches and restaurants if you visit now.
Bali in July July is another dry month, with an average of 4 days of rain and maximum temperatures of 27°C. With European school holidays approaching, July is a popular time of year to visit the island, so beach hotels, particularly in the popular resorts of Sanur and Seminyak, are likely to be busy. Water visibility for diving and snorkelling are excellent this month.
Bali in August Bali’s weather in August follows in similar fashion to July. With an average of 10 hours of sunshine a day, August is the sunniest month of the year – you’ll enjoy perfect beach conditions and hot temperatures that average 27°C. The south coast beach resorts are very busy this month, so for relief from the crowds as well as the hot weather, it might be worth heading towards the central region around Ubud.
Bali in September September is still a predominantly dry month with plenty of sunshine and clear skies, and temperatures that average a hot 27°C. One of the best months to visit Bali, the end of the European summer holidays mean that visitor numbers begin to reduce – the south coast beaches will become less crowded and you’ll experience fewer crowds when visiting temples and towns.
Bali in October October is officially the start of the wet season, so brief bursts of rainfall should be expected this month. Temperatures remain very warm in October, and you’ll still enjoy good water visibility around the protected dive spots of Menjangan and West Bali National Park.
Bali in November With the wet season now in full swing, you can expect an increased level of rainfall in November, particularly towards the end of the month. Sunny days are still frequent, and temperatures remain hot at an average of 27°C. Due to the wetter conditions, mountain climbing and trekking Mount Batur are not recommended this month.
Bali in December December in Bali has a high chance of rain showers, though you can still enjoy long periods of sunshine and very warm temperatures. With sea conditions worsening and the south coast beaches getting windier, water visibility is greatly reduced. Despite the wet weather, Christmas and New Year remain a popular time of year for visitors, so if you’re planning on visiting Bali now it’s well worth booking activities in advance.

JTB Group Acquires Kuoni Global Travel Services
The JTB Group has acquired all shares of Kuoni Travel Investment, i.e. Kuoni Global Travel Services, for an undisclosed sum. It will manage the new company under the JTB European managing company TPE.
JTB’s president & CEO Hiroyuki Takahashi said the acquisition is part of a plan to strengthen the inbound business from Asia to Europe. Kuoni Global Travel Services is one of the world’s leading travel companies with an important presence especially in Asian leisure and corporate groups visiting Europe, with high brand value from operating for more than 100 years.
Within the JTB family, Kuoni Global Travel Services will continue to operate as a neutral land operator to work with many companies other than JTB.
Insiders have been watching Kuoni closely for two reasons: it has been a major player in the European market for many years at the same time, in recent years, it has strategically been unloading portions of the company: Two years ago, the owner of German operator DER Touristik acquired Kuoni Group’s tour operating businesses.
A year later, EQT VII, the Swedish private equity company that owns Scandic Hotels purchased the Kuoni Group. The intention was to focus on the three core businesses of Kuoni: GTA, GTS (Kuoni Global Travel Services including Destination Management Specialists) and VFS.
Following that, EQT VII sold a chunk of Kuoni’s DMC network comprised of AlliedTPro US, Asian Trails, Austrailian Tours Management, Desert Adventures/Gulf Dunes Middle East and Private Safaris Africa, to Thomas Cook India.
The sale of Kuoni Global Travel Services (GTS), with its Group Travel Experts as well as the European and North American MICE businesses, to JTB Corporation, is the latest development.
To that end, Kuoni Group Travel Experts will continue as a B2B organization that provides bespoke packaged tours for leisure and incentive groups and tour operators. Its Global MICE division curates meetings, events, incentives and congresses/conventions for clients in Europe and North America, trading under the Kuoni Destination Management, Kuoni Congress, and Conference & Touring brands. Both Kuoni Group Travel Experts and Global MICE (through Kuoni Destination Management) will retain its New York office.
The JTB Group is a Global Destination Management Company (Global DMC) with a worldwide network of 516 offices in 100 cities in 36 countries and regions, and with approximately 26,000 employees working together.
Some of Kuoni’s recent moves include:
- The GTA merger into the Hotelbeds Group, announced in April 2017. After a synergetic add-on acquisition in 2016, the merger into Hotelbeds represents a compelling opportunity for GTA to co-create a strong platform for future growth. EQT VII and the Kuoni and Hugentobler Foundation will remain invested in the Hotelbeds Group to support its future growth trajectory.
- The sale of the Destination Management Specialists (DMS) to Thomas Cook India Group, announced in April 2017.
- The sale of Kuoni Global Travel Services (GTS), with its Group Travel Experts as well as the European and North American MICE businesses, to JTB Corporation.
