Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Do you need a visa to travel to Europe?

Whether or not you need a visa to travel to European countries largely depends on the nationality on your passport and whether the country you're travelling to is part of the Schengen Agreement.

This agreement sees 26 European countries offer visa-free travel to nationals from 60 other countries including Australia, the United States, Canada, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

To determine whether the country you're travelling to requires a visa, head to the   Schengen Visa's information website.

What is the internet access like in Europe?

You can easily access the internet in most countries in Europe, generally in capital cities and other major towns. Internet access may be limited in regional locations such as national parks or remote villages in some countries.

Can I use my mobile phone in Europe?

You shouldn't have a problem using your mobile phone while travelling throughout Europe, however, your international data roaming will need to be activated in order to connect to the internet or send messages (unless you connect to the local wi-fi).

What are the toilets like in Europe?

Modern, flushable toilets are the standard in the majority of European countries.

Can I drink the water in Europe?

Tap water in most European countries is considered safe to drink unless it is otherwise marked.

When should I book a tour in Europe?

There is no 'best time' to travel around Europe as most countries offer plenty to do in every season of the year.

T he most popular time to travel to countries like Greece, Italy, and Croatia is during the summer months (June, July, and August) so you can make the most of each country's respective beaches and warm weather.

C ountries such as Iceland, Norway, and Sweden are known for their snowy landscapes and northern lights sightings during Winter (December, January, and February).

How much does a Europe tour cost?

A tour in Europe can vary depending on the countries you want to visit, the style of tour, and how long you want to go for but you can expect to pay anywhere between USD$1,000 to USD$5,000, with most tours around USD$2,500.

Is tipping common in Europe?

Tipping isn't as prevalent in Europe as it is in some other countries and definitely isn't expected, but if you like the quality of service you've been given at hotels, restaurants etc then a tip is always appreciated.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Europe?

While credit cards are accepted in all European countries (especially in capital cities and other larger cities), smaller cafes or local run businesses may not have EFTPOS machines so it's always best to carry around a little cash to cover these expenses.

What is ATM access like in Europe?

You should have no problem finding ATMs in most European cities.

What currency will I need on a Europe tour?

The official currency of Europe is the Euro (€), however, only 19 of the 28 countries in the European Union use this. Countries that still use their own currency include Norway, Switzerland, Belarus, Croatia, Denmark, and Sweden.

Is Europe safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Europe is considered a reasonably safe continent for LGBTQIA+ travellers with plenty of countries openly accepting, welcoming, and embracing the community.

This is evident in large capital cities such as Paris, Berlin, Madrid, and Vienna.

Some countries still hold traditional religious beliefs such as Belarus and Poland so a degree of caution should be taken when travelling around cities and remote regions in those countries.

Will I need a socket adapter for Europe?

If you plan on travelling to multiple countries throughout Europe then purchasing an all-in-one, worldwide adapter is the safest way to go.

I f you don't want to do that, your safest bet is to buy an adapter that uses C or E/F-type plugs as most European countries recognise this.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before travelling?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to: Travel Insurance

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?

We are always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Enjoy afternoon tea in London

Sample over 300-years of history in the simplicity of homemade scones with whipped cream and jam. This deliciously British treat is best enjoyed in the afternoon, complete with a hot cup of Earl Grey, cucumber sandwiches and a tower of sugary delights.

Explore ancient Athens

You don't need to be a historian to appreciate the significance of Athens. Your love affair with the city might begin with goddess Athena’s Parthenon temple and the ruins of Acropolis, but it’s likely to end in a quaint alleyway getting a glimpse at daily life in this ancient capital. The story of Athens continues to unfold.

Catch a flamenco show in Spain

Discover the soul-stirring emotion of a Flamenco show in Spain. This expressive art-form has an intangible cultural heritage recognised by UNESCO, merging song, dance and musical instruments into a performance that has to be experienced at least once. Finish with dinner of paella or tapas to round off your perfect evening.

View the Northern Lights in Iceland

Mother Nature’s wonders come to life with the Aurora Borealis or ‘Northern Lights’. In the frosty landscapes of Iceland, this light display offers viewers a genuine pinch-me moment as vivid colours dance across the night sky.

Spend a night at the opera in Vienna

Hear the talents of traditional opera with the ghosts of Mozart and Strauss in your presence. Though there are more than few places to catch the opera in Vienna, none can compare to the State Opera House (Staatsoper).

Our top 5 things to do in Europe & Britain

There are endless pinch-me moments to be found across the many countries that make up the continent of Europe. But where to even begin? Perhaps a Flamenco show in Spain, afternoon tea in London or a Northern Lights viewing in frosty Iceland? Here are some of the highlights of our Europe and Britain trips that you're sure to love.

Paris, France

The world’s largest gallery and the home of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, the Louvre is without rival in the art world and is a must see when in Paris. Allow an entire day to explore its eight departments, not missing the Egyptian antiquities, Islamic art and various halls of sculptures. End your day with sunset by the Louvre Pyramid.

London, England

The British Museum

With some eight million works within its permanent collection, The British Museum is an illustrious European landmark. Admire objects brought back from the voyages of Captain James Cook and walk in the controversial presence of the Parthenon Marbles.

Florence, Italy

Uffizi Gallery

The Tuscan capital is home to Uffizi Gallery, where the brushworks of art’s true masters can be found. Names like Raffaello, Leonardo, and Michelangelo fill Uffizi’s grand pink walls, whilst internal courtyards leading to the Arno River reveal the building’s architectural brilliance.

Best museums in Europe & Britain

When travelling Europe with Trafalgar, museum hopping is one of the best ways to understand the culture and history of the places you visit. You’ll find yourself critiquing ancient art and staring in awe at some of the world’s most prominent works. Here are some of our favourites.

Paella Valenciana

Saffron, snails, butterbeans and bomba rice are just some of the ingredients you might find in traditional Spanish paella. Despite originating from the coastal town of Valencia, Paella Valenciana is a variety without seafood. You'll love sitting back to enjoy a steaming plate over the sounds of Spanish jazz in a lively alfresco restaurant.

Beef Stroganoff

Now a staple dish in many parts of the world, beef stroganoff is best enjoyed in its birthplace in Russia with a vodka in hand. This simple dish of beef strips sauteed in a sour cream sauce offers a heart-warming taste of this country’s culinary heritage.

Bouillabaisse

The Mediterranean city of Marseille is where a French culinary icon can be found and devoured. The fragrant stew of bouillabaisse, commonly served with crusty white bread, boils up the finest local seafood and seasonal vegetables with the flavours of fennel, saffron and cayenne pepper.

Best food in Europe & Britain

Our trips to Europe gravitate around indulgent local mealtimes. With new cuisines and cooking methodologies found at every turn, this continent is simply delicious.

What to pack for Europe

People packing for a tour

With such a large expanse of space to explore, on some days, long journeys are unavoidable. The scenery will provide plenty of visual entertainment, while headphones can be used to listen to some local music or enjoy podcasts about European history, culture and politics when you're not enjoying the storytelling from your Travel Director.

A good book

Exploring Europe is best done at a relaxed pace with ample opportunity to absorb your surroundings. Dedicate a few days to sitting in a park or a cafe, alternating between reading and watching the world go by.

Versatile shoes

Within the space of one outing you may experience all kinds of terrain when in Europe. Pack shoes that can see you walking from an elegant restaurant to a cobbled footpath, with a stroll along the soft grass of a park in between.

A blank journal

With the wealth of inspiration tucked into every corner of Europe, you may find yourself compelled to write down notes or memories. At the very least to share recommendations with friends when you return home.

All climate clothing

No matter the time of year you travel, Europe can deliver a myriad of temperatures. From frosty cities of Scandinavia to the temperate hills of Portugal, layered clothing best suits the varying micro-climates across this continent.

However, you can also find indirect flights that can be cheaper but take longer. It's important to compare prices and flight times to find the best option for you.

When booking your flight, consider the time of year you plan to travel. Peak travel season in Europe is during the summer months, from June to August, and flights can be more expensive and crowded during this time. If you are flexible with your travel dates, consider travelling in the shoulder season, from April to May or September to October, when prices are generally lower and crowds are smaller. We also highly recommend pre organising a Europe SIM card for when you land.

Australian citizens do not need a visa to travel to most European countries for tourism purposes for up to 90 days. However, it's important to check the visa requirements for the countries you plan to visit, as some may have different rules and regulations. For example, if you plan to stay in Europe for more than 90 days or work while you're there, you may need to apply for a visa. It's also important to make sure your passport is valid for at least six months after your planned departure date.

Transportation

Once you arrive in Europe, you'll need to decide how you want to get around. Public transportation is generally very good in Europe, so you can easily travel between cities by train or bus. If you're planning to visit multiple countries, you might want to consider purchasing a Eurail pass, which allows you to travel on trains in most European countries. The pass is available in a variety of options, including consecutive days, flexible days, and one-way tickets. It's important to research the options and prices to find the best option for you.

If you prefer to drive, you can rent a car in Europe, but it's important to note that driving rules and regulations may differ from those in Australia. You will need an International Driving Permit, which you can obtain from your local automobile club, and you may need to pay additional fees for insurance and tolls.

Accommodation

When it comes to accommodation, there are plenty of options to choose from. Hotels, hostels, and Airbnb rentals are all popular choices. It's important to research your options and book in advance, especially during peak travel season. Some cities, such as Paris and Rome, have a wide range of accommodation options, but they can be more expensive. Other cities, such as Berlin and Budapest, have a variety of affordable options.

If you're travelling on a budget, consider staying in a hostel or Airbnb rental. Hostels are a great option for solo travellers or those looking to meet other travellers, while Airbnb rentals can provide a more authentic and local experience.

Top Destinations

Europe is home to some of the world's most iconic landmarks, museums, and cities. Paris, Rome, and London are all must-see cities, but there are also many other hidden gems to explore. Barcelona, Berlin, and Amsterdam are just a few examples of cities with vibrant cultures and fascinating history.

Paris is known for its iconic landmarks, such as the Eiffel Tower and Notre-Dame Cathedral, as well as its museums, such as the Louvre and Musée d'Orsay. Rome, on the other hand, is known for its ancient history, with the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Pantheon all must-see landmarks. London is home to Buckingham Palace, the Tower of London, and the British Museum, and is a great destination for those interested in history and culture.

Barcelona is known for its unique architecture, with landmarks such as the Sagrada Familia and Park Güell designed by the renowned architect Antoni Gaudi. Berlin is a city with a rich and complex history, from the remnants of the Berlin Wall to the vibrant art scene in the city's east. Amsterdam is a beautiful city with a network of canals and iconic landmarks such as the Anne Frank House and the Rijksmuseum.

Food and Drink

One of the highlights of any trip to Europe is the opportunity to indulge in delicious cuisine and drinks. Each country has its own unique dishes and specialties. France is known for its pastries, cheese, and wine, while Italy is known for its pasta, pizza, and gelato. Germany is famous for its sausages and beer, while Spain is known for its tapas and sangria.

It's important to try local cuisine and visit local markets and restaurants to experience the authentic flavors of each country. However, it's also important to be aware of any dietary restrictions or allergies and to communicate these to restaurant staff.

Safety and Security

While Europe is generally a safe destination for travellers, it's important to take precautions to ensure your safety and security. Keep your valuables, such as your passport and money, in a secure location, and be aware of your surroundings when walking in unfamiliar areas.

It's also important to be aware of scams and pickpocketing. Some common scams include people asking for money or offering to help with your luggage, so it's important to be cautious and avoid giving money or personal information to strangers.

Health and Medical Care

Before travelling to Europe, it's important to ensure you have adequate health insurance coverage. The Australian government recommends taking out comprehensive travel insurance, as medical treatment can be expensive in Europe. It's also a good idea to research the healthcare system in the countries you plan to visit and to carry any necessary medication or medical supplies with you.

It's important to be aware of any health risks, such as food or water-borne illnesses or insect-borne diseases. It's recommended to consult with a healthcare professional before travelling to ensure you have the necessary vaccinations and medications. Travelling to Europe from Australia can be an exciting and rewarding experience, but it's important to plan ahead and be prepared for the journey. From flights and visas to accommodation and transportation, there are many factors to consider. However, with careful planning and research, you can make the most of your European adventure and create memories that will last a lifetime.

This is my first tour experience and I am in no position to compare, but our team Explore Together 23 was exceptional, we easily blended together as one big family, caring for each other where needed. i had a motto of “making our dreams bigger than our memories “ to which I shared with some of our team members. Matt is a historian in his own right, giving us lectures, without notes; on the history of the Country we are about to enter into. His timing on his series was perfectly timed that sets the tone of excitement for us. Another thing worth mentioning is his professionalism and efficiency in dealing with issues that could affect our schedule. But he has also to strike the balance between the time involved in dealing with the issue and the challenge presented to arived at resolving the issue at hand. Pascal, on the other hand; is a Star, very efficient and reliable in his driving skills that puts every body at ease. His music added life to the team, keeping them entertained during the long haul. He is competent in following impromptu directions from our local tour guide, this happened because there was huge demonstrations at Budapest that time that it was required of us to changed routes. He can easily manoeuvre sharp bends and tight spots. Matt and Pascal had a great teamwork. I am convinced they can easily get a 5 ratings each.

Great diversity of countries and cities but WAY too fast paced. One night in Slovenia and Poland was ridiculous and with travel time some days we spent less than 15 hours in the city. The guide was a but inexperienced so we didn't have a good description of some of the cities. Great way to make friends and see cities! Would recommend going end of August or later as it was still very hot going through the cities!!

I though the Intrepid tour was fantastic. The group leader did a great job in looking after us and providing us with good orientation in all the countries we visited. The only point that could be improved, was in relation to accommodation. In Prague, five people were placed in the one hotel with one bathroom and toilet. This is not really ideal, however, when we raised this issue, our group leader went out of his way to provide an alternate accommodation for my husband and I. I felt that this was really good and we were very pleased with the outcome. The other tour participants were great and I recommend this to anyone who is interested in a great holiday. Thank you Zsolt.

We enjoyed the tour with our close family and now we have beautiful memories to cherish with best holidays of our lifetime spent in Europe Our best tour guide from all of them was Albert. Maria was very helpful too. Other tour guides Jose, Christina and different local tour guides were knowledgeable too but was rushing too much. We had to rush a lot from morning thru evening with stop overs in between. Some more extra time at each stops would have been appreciated but understanding time restraints it was not possible. Couple of hotels were bit far away from city centre which was bit inconvenient so be prepared to grab stuff you need in your stopovers - guide would let you know in advance. Highly recommend this tour to people who want to visit more places in less time. Also ensure to book extra nights in Rome, Budapest and Paris as there is lots to do here Thank you

It was excellent! Our guide Daniel was the best. Daniel made the whole trip fun, stress free and he was very knowledgeable. The accomodation was lovely and very central. How I Planned a 6 week European Holiday (Plus download my detailed Itinerary)

As I’m sure most people (especially Australians) would agree, COVID hung around a lot longer than I thought it would. With international travel finally back on the cards, I’m starting to plan future trips, particularly future holidays to Europe.

To plan my trips I use a mix of Excel spreadsheets (you can use them in Google Sheets which is like a free online version of Excel or Number for Mac) and an itinerary template I created in Microsoft Word .

I find other blogger’s itineraries and tips for planning itineraries very helpful, so wanted to share my own Europe trip planning process.

Warning, if you’re not a type A personality and don’t like to plan detailed itineraries, this post might not be for you…

Things I consider when planning a Europe trip

I have a very detailed post with the 50 Things to consider when planning an itinerary . But in this post I really wanted to get specific about planning a Europe itinerary.

I use a similar method for planning any holiday:

  • Order of countries I’m visiting

Timings & how long to stay in each city

  • Time of year visited – seasons, weather, opening hours for main attractions

Train versus bus versus plane

Diy day trips versus pre-booked group tours.

  • Will the trip be too long?
  • What could I change about this itinerary?
  • What are my ‘must visit’ versus ‘good to visit’ destinations

I consider the cost when booking things like train versus a plane, type of accommodation and day tours. However, budget is not my main concern. I’m not going to skimp on cost and take the view that it costs whatever it costs. Past trips usually end up being about 15% more than I initially expected and I’m totally fine with that. I will not sacrifice decent accommodation and a good night sleep, or use an airline with a poor safety record, just to save a few dollars.

Countries Visited (in this order)

The trip was 45 days including travel days. I lose minimum 24 hours traveling each way to / from Australia. Half day transit each time I leave a destination is included in the timings for each country in the list below.

  • Travel day – flight from Australia to Copenhagen (1 day)
  • Denmark (2 days) – Copenhagen
  • Finland (6 days) – Helsinki & Rovaniemi
  • Estonia (3 days)
  • Latvia (3 days)
  • Lithuania (3 days)
  • Netherlands (5 days)
  • Belgium (3 days)
  • Luxembourg (1 day – day trip from Brussels)
  • Czech Republic (5 days)
  • Croatia (2 days)
  • Slovenia (3 days)
  • Germany (7 days)
  • Travel day – flight home to Australia (1 day)

Tutorial on how I make my travel photobooks is coming soon!

This order may appear odd, zig zagging across Europe, but there are very good reasons for that which I’ll explain more in this post.

Why I visited the countries in this order

I departed September 11th and arrived back October 26th. I debated the country order a  lot  but in the end I wouldn’t change the countries visited or the order that I visited them.

  • I always take the view that, if, for whatever reason I couldn’t get back to Europe for a while what would I regret not seeing and doing? (Covid arrived 3 months after I got back from this trip so I was glad I had taken this approach!)
  • I was doing part of the trip with my sister who really wanted to see the northern lights in Finland
  • I was travelling with my Mum – what things interest her and what places does she want to visit? She’s not getting any younger, so what activities do we want to do now while we’re both fit and healthy?
  • We wanted to see autumn colors so I started with the northernmost countries as the Autumn colors would descend down the continent as the month went on. I researched what time of year autumn colors typically arrived in each of those countries and that influenced the country order as well
  • Avoid Oktoberfest in Germany. I have zero interest in drinking and partying and I wouldn’t go to Oktoberfest in any country (let alone Germany), even if you paid me to go. Accommodation in Munich was also more expensive and hard to find during Oktoberfest
  • Geographical distance, travel time & transport connections. Latvia and Lithuania weren’t even on my list. However they are right next to Estonia which was on the list. It’s only approx. 4 hour bus ride between these countries, they’re cheap to visit and not over-run with tourists yet so I figured why not add them to the list?
  • Belgium is an easy train ride from the Netherlands. Could take an early train so can have most of the day in Belgium
  • Prague had very limited flight options out of the country. No matter what countries I ordered after it in the itinerary, we had to do a stopover in Frankfurt to get anywhere other than the ‘big’ places like Paris. Brussels had a direct flight to Prague so we managed to avoid a stopover on the way there
  • We only spent 2 days in Croatia. It wasn’t on the list either however, Zagreb where you can take a day trip from to the Plitvice Lakes, is a short bus ride from Ljubljana and we knew we wanted to go to Slovenia.. so Croatia was added to the list
  • I don’t like to spend more than about 5 days (including day trips) in one place. I usually do 8am to 6pm or even 8pm itineraries so after 5 days in a major city like London or Paris I’ve had enough of a taste and am ready to explore something new
  • Day trip options. I spend at least half as long as the actual holiday just planning the holiday. I enjoy itinerary planning and like taking my time, but day trips is one of the most frustrating things to coordinate. Some tours only operate on certain days of the week, or you need a morning tour but it’s only offered in the afternoon. I don’t want the hassle of hiring a car, figuring out how to drive in another country and no doubt getting lost, so lesser visited countries and attractions like the Plitvice lakes were planned around a weekend in order to do the day trip

We were actually only going to go for about 4 – 5 weeks, but Europe is so accessible once you get there and everything is so close which is how the trip ended up being 6.5 weeks.

Another thing I considered was a ‘travel to do list’ I created years ago, of all the countries I wanted to visit before I turned 30 and roughly in what order and at what time of year. I clustered places I wanted to see at certain times e.g. Alsace region of France at Christmastime, autumn colors, a Christmas markets European river cruise etc. So I tried to leave those places out, or if places were on this itinerary, I’d be happy to visit them again at another time of year e.g. I could go back to Amsterdam at springtime to see the tulips and it’s a hub to go in and out of Europe anyway so am likely to fly into Europe via there next time I visit.

This was my original travel plan I did in my digital notebook. . before I knew how long covid would drag on.

how to use a digital notebook travel planning color coded map of europe uses for a goodnotes digital planner color coded all about planners

Arrival country

The first country we were going to visit was actually supposed to be Finland to meet up with my sister who had been in Russia prior. However , there aren’t any flights from Australia that will go directly from the key stopovers (Singapore, Dubai, Doha) to Helsinki. The only way to get to Helsinki was by flying through these stopovers and having another stopover somewhere in Europe.

The best option for flight times with the least amount of wasted time and for a reasonable price, was actually Copenhagen, Denmark. Quite odd as it’s an expensive destination once you get there. But then I thought, actually, that works out well. I’d be happy to go there and I’m not deliberately paying for a flight to get to Copenhagen, plus it aligned with a flight 2 days later that would go to Helsinki so I could land at 6:30am and have 2 full days in Copenhagen. Sold!

Another reason I thought Denmark would be good, is that less people are likely to go there as it’s so expensive, so the plane might not be as full. And it wasn’t. My Mum and I managed to have an empty seat between us on both legs of the flight there. Which really makes a difference when you’re flying cattle class.

I liked Nyhavn so much I made it the cover of my travel photobook

blurb photobook review travel souvenir europe travel book how to make a photo book of your travels trip vacation memory

I will only fly on airlines that have a reputable safety history and I will happily pay extra for this. This does eliminate a few flight path routes to Europe, but the time is always about 24 hours, one way from Australia no matter which way you go anyway.

Another thing that I’ll admit was in the back of my mind. We were departing on September 11th… Just in case in the extremely unlikely event of something like a flight highjacking happening again on that anniversary, I will admit I didn’t bother looking at flight routes that went via the USA.

I will also only fly long haul with airlines that allow a decent baggage allowance (about 32kg per checked bag). On long haul for 6 weeks I knew my bag would probably end up near that weight by the time I’d finished buying chocolate, stationery and whatever else I found. I don’t want the hassle of having to pre-buy extra baggage or dealing with airport staff buying extra luggage allowance at the check in counter.

I have flown via Singapore’s Changi airport both times I’ve been to Europe and really like that airport – very easy to navigate

singapore changi airport review how to plan a europe holiday itinerary

If I can avoid getting on a plane in Europe, I do it. Train travel and bus travel are easy, inexpensive options.

  • Most depart from the central station where the accommodation is near so don’t need to lug suitcases far
  • Reasonable price and can get plenty of deals with a Eurostar or Eurail ticket
  • Scenery out the window to look at
  • There are usually tv like screens in the carriage telling you what stop is next, as well as a verbal announcement. You can also track where you are via Google Maps on your phone so I’ve never needed to ask a stranger for directions at a train station
  • Less security. Once I enter the Schengen there’s no airport style security, it’s just like boarding a normal train. If you take a flight from a Schengen country to another Schengen country, you have to get to the airport really early and go through security. The time isn’t worth it for a short flight
  • If you’re taking a long distance train and depending on the company, you can pre-select your seat when you buy the ticket (it may cost a few dollars extra)
  • Most stations have lifts to the platform but  there is the risk that they might not. For whatever reason I noticed there was usually a large step from the train down to the platform so keep that in mind
  • Can walk around the train carriages
  • No plane toilet, train toilets are usually cleaner
  • Most arrive at the central station where again, I typically book accommodation so don’t need to lug suitcases

As for taking the bus, I prefer to take the train so have only done the Lux bus around Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania and the Flixbus from Zagreb to Ljubljana. The Lux bus was great. TV screens on the back of the seats, hardly anyone on the bus so you could spread out, no designated seats, curtains to block out the light. I’d use it again.

Read more: Lux Express Bus Review (best way to travel between the Baltic countries)

Vilnius bus station lux express bus

I had heard many stories from other people saying the Flixbus does not wait and will leave without you if you are late. I was so paranoid about this I didn’t drink any water so I wouldn’t need to get off the bus at one of the designated rest stops to go the toilet and risk them driving off without me! Apart from this paranoia and the bus driver not speaking English, the Flixbus was great. Only $20 AUD for a 2 hour bus ride, comfortable seats and they lifted my luggage in and out of the hold underneath the bus. I’d take it again for bus trips 4 hours or less and if the timings worked with my itinerary.

I thoroughly researched  everything  so had a very good idea of how long it would take to get between places, which days I could switch based on weather, how far things were from the hotel etc. I spend so much time pouring over itineraries that I can basically recite the entire thing off by heart by the time I actually go on the trip.

Most of the days were 8am to 8pm. We fit in absolutely everything we wanted to see with no regrets and didn’t feel like we missed out on anything.

For me, the more well-known ‘big’ cities (e.g. London, Paris, Amsterdam) need 4 – 5 days and smaller cities (e.g. Prague, Vienna, Copenhagen) need 2 – 3 days to see the highlights. These timings do not include travel which may be half a day on each of the arrival and departure days. I usually do 1 – 2 full day or half day trips in each city which is included within these timings.

The only thing I’d change was that I didn’t need 7 days in Germany. I could’ve removed the day trip from Frankfurt to Marburg and the day trip from Munich to Lake Chiemsee HerrenChiemmse Palace (if you’ve been to Versailles don’t bother, you’ll be underwhelmed). Instead I would’ve either reduced the length of the trip, or added another part of Germany to get some more variety into the itinerary (I should’ve added more of the romantic road).

You can download a copy of my full itinerary here . If you prefer a slow pace of travel, you might need to add a half day or day in each city.

Time of year visited

I think September to October (autumn) was a great time of year to visit Europe. I have also been in April to May (spring) and really enjoyed that too. Visiting Europe during the summer months doesn’t interest me. Too many crowds of tourists, too hot (my chocolate snacks will melt!) and plus I’ll want to drink more water and if you’ve been to Europe I’m sure you aware of the toilet situation (or lack of). Prices can also be higher and depending on where you go I think it could be very difficult to find a restaurant for dinner without pre-booking.

So if you’re not sure when to go, try the shoulder season (April to June and September to November).

Bruges in autumn belgium diy train trip from brussels

Related post: Bruges and Ghent day trip from Brussels via the train

In less popular countries like Slovenia, the day tours don’t run every day and when they do, it’s a mini bus. There were only 4 – 6 people plus the tour guide on tours. It was far more enjoyable not having to wait for the stragglers, people had more of a say in the timings of things, they add little extras like ‘here’s a nice viewpoint let’s stop for photos’, they can buy tickets for you saving you time (and sometimes can swing a small discount for you too), you could ask the tour guide for restaurant recommendations, they’d talk about their life in that country. Overall just a much better, more personalised experience.

These tours can cost a bit more just because there are no other day tour options and obviously not as economical as operating a giant bus but I much prefer this style of travel.

You don’t get any of that on the big tour groups. I once had one where I was sitting at the front of the bus and could see the reflection of the tour guide in the windscreen… she was reading word for word off of palm cards!

Compare that to the tour for Neuschwanstein where there were 70 people on a 2 level bus and Grayline tours had 3 buses of that size departing on a single day (this was in October – shoulder season), I’d hate to know how crowded it gets in the summer.

neuschwanstein castle day trip from munich germany with grayline tours review how to plan a europe itinerary autumn colors leaves

Why do day tours instead of on my own? Some places you have to have a car to get around and I don’t think it would be possible for me to fit everything into 1 day. Directions, parking, finding a place to eat. Tour guides know where to go, have arrangements with restaurants, reserved tour bus parking. It makes it much more efficient. They usually have the timings down pat if they’ve been running the tour for a few years and sometimes I think I’d like a bit more time and some less, but I’ll take that trade off for just being able to go there. If it’s a choice between hiring a car or taking a tour I’d take the tour. But if there are trains and buses easily accessible I would rather do it myself.

If you were an influencer or professional photographer you’ll probably need an overnight in places like Rothenberg because there’s no way you’re going to get the perfect shot in the limited time on an organized day tour.

I purchased a train ticket from Amsterdam to go to Zaanse Schans, The Hague and then back to Amsterdam. But there were only certain trains that the ticket allowed (think it was non-express trains only), so we had to wait half an hour for the right train. If you were on a tour bus you wouldn’t have this problem so pros and cons for doing / not doing an organized day tour.

You can see the level of detail I go into when I plan a day trip myself versus joining an organized bus tour in my itinerary for this trip .

Was the trip too long?

Yes. The first Europe trip I did was 5.5 weeks. I felt this wasn’t quite enough. The second trip was 6.5 weeks. I felt like this was a little too much. I think for me the 6 week mark is the sweet spot. At the pace I travel it’s usually 20,000+ steps per day, going to viewpoints at night so getting back to the hotel late, getting up early the next morning for a group tour or to be at an attraction at opening time to avoid crowds and get good photos. By the 6 week mark I’m too tired to continue going at that pace.

If you travel at a slower pace you could spend a bit longer but once I spend about 5 days in one city I feel like I’m done, I’ve seen the highlights and I’m ready for a different city or country.

What would I change about this itinerary?

Not much! I thoroughly research and planned everything so I was really happy with how the trip went. The only thing I would change is spending more time in Luxembourg (overnight instead of a rushed day trip where 6 hours was spent on a bus). It’s not far from Colmar and Alsace so I can add Luxembourg into a Christmas markets itinerary I want to do in that area on another trip (and would see it during a different season too).

I didn’t know this was going to happen when I planned the itinerary, but the only way to get from Ljubljana to Munich was on Slovenia’s national airline.. which went bust a few weeks before our flight. We had to re-book flights which sent us up to Warsaw in Poland with a connection back down to Munich (so 7 hours instead of 2 hours). We didn’t want to rush Ljubljana so we opted for the flight (which departed at 5pm). There was a train through Austria which left in the morning and would’ve taken the same amount of time and I’m sure would’ve been very scenic. If I’d known the issue with flights was going to happen before the trip, I probably would’ve rejigged the itinerary and opted for the train instead.

Australia to Europe CHEAP FLIGHTS from A$624

Australia is a long way from anywhere, and Europe is literally on the opposite side of the world.

I’ve watched as the prices of international flights doubled, sometimes tripled in 2023.

Post Updated 15 Mar, 2024

If you expected to book Australia to Europe cheap flights during the European summer this year (for a fair price), you probably dismissed the idea the moment you saw the inflated fares.

Unfortunately, it seems that all airlines are quoting these super high fares. So, is it absurd to hope that Australia to Europe cheap flights exist in 2024?

Better yet, could there be an Australia to Europe cheap flight to visit within the next six months?

Table of Contents

Yes, a cheap flight from Australia to Europe for 2024 is available

I’ve spent hours researching the cheapest flight Australia to Europe and the cheapest place to fly to in Europe from Australia.

They exist – and here’s how you can book them.

From my research, I found the cheapest flight from Australia to Europe is from Sydney to Athens, Greece. You can book this flight now for as little as A$624 in Oct 2024.

There’s another AMAZING cheap flight from Melbourne to Athens for A$695.

Maybe you’d prefer to fly to Germany? There’s another cheap flight from Melbourne (or Sydney) to Berlin, Germany.

australia to europe cheap flights dirt cheap

Australia to Europe cheap flights – Which airline?

I booked this cheap flight from Melbourne to Athens with Scoot Airlines. If you’re wondering who this low-cost, long-haul airline is – read my Honest Scoot Airlines Review .

Before you make quick judgments about hearing those words ‘ low-cost’, this airline is a little sister to the well-respected Singapore Airlines. Scoot has been operating for 10+ years and has won some outstanding awards for its service.

So, why is Fly Scoot not as well-known in the industry as other airline carriers? I have no idea.

My Experience – Cheapest Flight from Australia to Europe

I’m often asked, “What is the cheapest country to fly to in Europe from Australia?” My answer is to fly to either Athens in Greece or Berlin in Germany. Let me explain more below.

The first time I chose to fly with Scoot Airlines was in February 2022. I paid AUD 342 for my Melbourne (MEL) flight to Athens (ATH). If you do the calculations, that’s about EUR 240.

This was the cheapest flight to Europe from Australia that I’ve ever taken, and it was very comfortable.

Seriously, the best way to fly to Europe from Australia if you want the cheapest deal is with Scoot.

fly with scoot the cabin

I didn’t have to endure ridiculously long stopovers. Instead, it was as direct as you can get, with a stop at Changi Airport in Singapore—one of the best-rated airports in the world.

After a short changeover at Singapore airport (and enough time to devour a huge bowl of Laksa soup), connecting to my second flight to Athens was easy.

The best thing about this cheap Scoot flight from Australia to Europe is that you can also book this flight in two sectors (MEL-SIN) and (SIN-ATH) for a low price.

This means you can stop over and see these  10 best places to visit in Singapore .

If you need a little more convincing that Singapore is worth seeing, read these  7 reasons to travel to Singapore.

Learn more about Fly Scoot

Go to FlyScoot website and check the cheapest flights from Australia to Europe you are likely to find anywhere.

If you’re saving A$600 on a one-way flight from Australia to Europe, who really cares if you don’t get that little TV screen on the back of the chair for entertainment or the ‘open bar service’ anyway?

If I’m being honest, I felt like a million dollars after flying Australia to Europe on this cheap flight, having consumed zero alcohol.

As you will read in my Scoot Airlines Review – to put it plainly, you pay for what you need with Fly Scoot. So, for example, if you want to eat on board, you pre-book your meals (for about $15 each).

Your Scoot Airlines cheap flight from Australia to Europe includes some luggage allowance, but if you need more – you simply pay for it. You can read more about add-ons on Scoot Fees Chart .

low cost carriers

I’m very familiar with this concept now from flying around Europe on low-cost carriers for the past decade.

And it’s a huge reason why I travel with my Osprey 40L carry-on backpack , it weighs no more than 10kg. This way, I avoid paying excess luggage fees, and I don’t have to risk losing my luggage.

If you saw the chaos this year in airports across the world of travellers having no idea where their luggage is (after taking a flight), then you should consider travelling lighter too.

TIP: But, if you need to check your bags, my tip is that you get a Samsung luggage tracker (or this 2 pack of luggage tags if you’re travelling with a family). At least if you have this in your luggage and the airline has no idea where in the world your luggage has landed, you will.

My Best Tip for a cheap flight from Australia to Europe – Be organised

As I mentioned, Scoot Airlines doesn’t have fancy onboard entertainment. But it’s so easy to entertain yourself. Bring your laptop or phone loaded with Netflix series and movies, a good power bank for extra battery, and your AirPods—and you’re good to go!

I won’t go into all the details about what you do and don’t get with Scoot Airlines, as it’s all included in my Scoot Review .

thanks for a great article Rach – I spend a lot of time hunting for fares with outlaws living in Spain – this has given me some great ideas – hope that Scoot will have similarly low fares towards end of 2023 when I’m hoping to make a trip.

Hi Sabine, So sorry to hear this sad news. You could try and search for a flight with Aviasales or perhaps Singapore Airlines, Qantas or Qatar – you could try directly on their websites or the flights should show up on Aviasales booking platform.

I reside in the Gold Coast. I’m curious as to whether there are flights available from Brisbane to Greece or if one must first fly to Sydney or Melbourne.

Hi David, these flights are for departures from MEL & SYD only at the moment.

Hi David, our Travel Resources Page on our travel website has all the answers for you.

Hi Rach I tried to find that special to Athens from Sydney on scoot but couldn’t see that price. Does Scoot still offer promotion deals. They used to have a special code. Thanks Nick

I don’t know about a special code to get a better price. I recently updated this post with some dates/fares that were still available, but it sounds like they’ve all been booked.

It makes sense now as we’re just entering the peak summer season in Europe. Hopefully, they release more discounted fares soon, and I’d recommend signing up to receive the Scoot newsletter so you’re one of the first to know when they do.

"We joined the Intrepid “Real Italy Food Tour” and enjoyed it thoroughly. Our tour guide, Micol, was very knowledgeable and provided us with lots of good information. It seems Micol knew many of the staff of the venues we visited, including the pasta making class we attended. Our group of 11 travelers was extremely compatible, which greatly added to the fun and enjoyment."

"Our family of four, including two adult children, took the Bicycling: Day Trips to Paradise in Canada. This trip is entirely outsourced to the owners of the inn, there are no Road Scholar employees involved in the trip. Two of us have taken bicycle trips all over the world and the bicycling component of this trip was disorganized, haphazard and almost unsafe. We all filled out forms giving details regarding our bicycle fitting months before the trip. On the first day, the leader Stephen, went around the room and asked the same questions and said everyone would get fitted in the morning before we began the first ride. The morning brought a rack of bikes, all different types in various levels of readiness. There were road bikes, hybrid bikes, mountain bikes and e-bikes. The rides were all on paved surfaces and the mountain bikes were heavy and the additional suspension added weight. The bike I received had rust on the chain and rear sprocket. When I asked about it, was told they were waiting for another van to show up with tools and equipment. Once it arrived, they gave me the lubricant to spray on the rust. My wife’s bike would not shift into the high gear on the front sprocket. Instead of adjusting the derailleur, they suggested spraying it with lubricant. Our one son is over six feet and needed a larger frame bike, even though he detailed it in the bike form months ago, there was no bike to fit him. One of the guides, then went home and brought a larger bike that was a full suspension mountain bike for him. The bike was very heavy, hard to control on the road and he felt unsafe. After two days, one of the guides convinced Stephen that they could adjust a hybrid bike to fit him. Clearly there was no work done to prepare the bikes for the trip. Many of the bikes needed adjusting and all needed lubricant to function easily. For every day, there was a tray of snacks placed out for us to take along the ride. None of the bikes had any baskets or attached bags, so if you didn’t bring a small day pack, there was no way to carry the snacks. For lunch on the rides, they brought exactly one sandwich for each rider. Since most of us get hungry while doing a day of exercise, it would have been helpful to have a few extras. On one day, they ran out of sandwiches and one of the leaders that were riding with us did not get lunch. Do NOT take this trip if you are expecting it to be a bicycling trip. We have used VBT and Discovery Bicycle Tours many times over the past 25 years and they are excellent bike tour companies. Lastly, after sharing these details with Road Scholar after the trip, their response was weak at best. After doing the full reviews and having to call them, their response was to give us $200 credit after spending $8000 on this trip. Not only was that insulting, they assumed that I would take another trip with their organization."

"Normally, I don't feel like writing reviews, but I felt compelled to do it for Athens Insiders. I made the decision to travel to Athens in the summer of 2012 in order to avoid the commotion that was predicted to result from the Queen's jubilee. As usual, my work kept me busy right up to the last minute, so I ran out of time to do anything fun for my week-long trip. I learned about this young group of tour guides for Athens and its vicinity from a friend. I had a wonderful experience. I got in touch with Daphne, who gave me email recommendations for Athens attractions to see, inquired about my preferences for local cuisine, and then devised an itinerary for my trip. In addition to visiting the typical suspects in Athens (Acropolis, etc.), I also chose to travel to Delhi and spend a night at a campground there. And I had a great time, honestly. We visited the attractions when there were few visitors and spent the busiest times outside of Athens rather than being herded around like cattle. I was taken to incredible tiny eateries (the well-known tavernas), marketplaces, and other regional shops."

"I have the distinct pleasure of working with Steven at Iberian Escapes as our property manager and host. We moved away from a larger property manager because they couldn't get organized and they never provided accurate accounting - we were frustrated and quickly losing trust. Thankfully, we found Iberian Escapes. Steven met us at our apartment - on time - and he's done everything he said he would. We live in a different country and we needed someone trustworthy and competent. We very much appreciate the honesty, integrity, accurate accounting, and timely communication to us AND our guests no matter the situation. We even heard from some recent guests "you've got a great property manager! He's very responsive and easy to work with" Another guest liked the apartment so much he wanted to stay an extra day. Easy for us, easy for the guest, and all seamlessly coordinated by Iberian Escapes! Highly recommend for property owners looking for a great manager. Also highly recommend finding one of his listings if you're planning on staying in one of the areas he covers! You won't be disappointed."

Europe Tour Selection Trips

  • River cruises  are an appealing way to tour Europe in a relaxed mode that offers sightseeing in both atmospheric villages and big cities.
  • Europe is about more than high culture; active Europe tours include cycling in Greece, hiking in the French or Swiss Alps, even walking across England.
  • Point-to-point walking or cycling tours through the countryside are a great way to meet locals along trails, in pubs, or in small town settings.
  • For the truly adventurous, consider tours that include running with the bulls in Pamplona, Spain; “mud walking” in Holland; or glacier walking in  Switzerland .
  • The “If It’s Tuesday, It Must Be Belgium” rush-rush-through-seven countries-in-a- week bus tours are mostly passé; consider focusing on one or just a few countries at a time.
  • Spain-Portugal; Denmark-Sweden-Norway; Czech Republic-Austria-Hungary; and Belgium-Netherlands are among those countries that make for nice regional tours.
  • While you can see something of Europe in a week, allowing at least ten days to two weeks for one to three countries is more satisfying.
  • Don’t be too concerned with language barriers when booking your tour, since many Europeans now speak English, and your guides can translate when necessary.
  • Many Europeans go on vacation for the entire month of August, so visiting in September or October can be ideal; the weather is cooler, too.

Additional details

Traveling to  Europe  - ETIAS

Europe is implimenting a new travel authorization system that American travelers will need to enter into Europe’s EU and Schengen Zone.  ETIAS, which stands for EU Travel Information and Authorisation System,  will charge a fee and check security credentials for travelers visiting for business, tourism, medical or transit purposes.

ETIAS won’t be required until 2022 but there will be a six month grace period  which means travelers won’t be required to have approval until 2023.

Read more about traveling to Europe and what the ETIAS means for American travelers.

New Update -  Europe  Ban

As of July 1, 2020 the European Union has opened their borders to tourists from 15 different countries.

The reopening plan was based on health criteria, and ultimately officials decided to leave the U.S. off the list. The list of countries allowed to enter Europe will be reviewed every two weeks to keep up with the changing reality of coronavirus outbreaks.

Here is the full list of countries that the European Union has opened up to:

  • New Zealand
  • South Korea

Where does the language barrier matter?

One of the most fascinating qualities of Europe is the way that countries so close together, with so much interaction, have maintained strong individuality. This manifests in culture, customs, and of course - language. There are 24 official languages in the EU, but countries both in the Union and outside it often have their own official languages.

Because of this, if you are planning a trip around Europe - you will likely run into a situation where you cannot speak the local language. Don’t worry! Most Europeans can speak more than two languages, and in Western Europe, as well as capital cities, this means many Europeans speak English.

Eastern Europe & Russia

One common concern when traveling to Europe is that there is very little English spoken in Eastern Europe -- this is, however, rapidly changing. As the popularity of destinations like Budapest , Prague , Riga , and Krakow continues to boom, many more young people there are becoming fluent in English.

There are, however, several places where English speakers are a little harder to come by. Four countries where English speakers are uncommon include:

Russia (with the exception of St. Petersburg)

Rural Spain

As can be expected, there are also countries with specific regional dialects. This is unlikely to be a problem -- but it is something good to be prepared for! For example, even if you are fluent in French, you might not be able to understand Alsatian (spoken in the Alsace region of region, including the city Strasbourg ) or Catalan (spoken in the southwestern corner of  France).

Best Winter Family European Vacations

A winter vacation to Europe is a timeless and magical experience, especially when the trip is shared with loved ones. Here are three of the best locations to keep in mind for when you’re planning your next trip for you and your family.

1.   Zermatt, Switzerland Take an alpine tour of Europe to this picturesque town is nestled between the sharp and dramatic mountains. Not only this, but it is at the base of one the Alps’ most famous peaks: the Matterhorn.

Enthusiastic climbers, skiers, and snowboarders will thrill in some of the best skiing Europe has to offer. Afterwards, head back to your chalet and tuck into a steaming mug of Swiss hot chocolate before heading out for a traditional fondue dinner.

2.   St. Petersburg, Russia One of the most popular cities to visit throughout the year, visitors come to St. Petersburg in the winter to beat the crowds and experience a genuine Russian snow. You will be stunned by the sight of the frozen Neva river, and snow piling on the arches of the St. Nicholas cathedral.

When things get too chilly outdoors, take a well earned break by visiting the infamous Russian ballet and opera, or take an educational tour of the Hermitage museum inside of the Winter Palace.

3.   Canary Islands, Spain For families looking to escape the cold, Europe is still a great destination. Consider the Canary Islands, which are located off the coast of West Africa, and are favored with sunbathing weather all year round.

With opportunities to go hiking, jetski, waterski, surf, even sandboard off Gran Canaria’s massive, Sahara-like sand dunes, there are countless ways to have active fun. At night, indulge in the island’s unique cuisine.

Flying to Europe

What with the introduction of so many new budget airlines, many travelers are curious about new flight options to, and around, the continent. With fuel costs low, and the value of the dollar on the rise, trips to Europe are cheaper for Americans than ever before. This interest is increased by the fact that many vacation packages do not include flights, and it is still necessary to book your own.

Airlines like Ryanair travel within the continent very cheaply, but be prepared to forgo checking in, and airplane tray tables, much less built in TV’s. These budget airlines also have stringent and unique restrictions. For example, Ryanair requires that you check in before arriving at the airport, or you will lose your ticket. Another downside to "flying budget" is that customer service can be very difficult to obtain with these no-frills airlines, and cancellations without any recourse are also relatively common.

If you aren't willing to risk a budget airline, there are still ways to find cheap flights. One good tip is to look airlines fly out of cities that serve as a hub (an example in the U.S. would be the Atlanta airport). Whether you are flying for a Europe tour from the USA, or India, flights from these airports are usually lower in price.

With more than 50 ways to fly to Europe , it’s easier than ever to travel to the other side of the world.

A couple taking a selfie in Berlin

The Qantas Australia-London air route via the eastern hemisphere was once so popular it was nicknamed the ‘Kangaroo Route’ with heaps of Aussie travellers boomeranging between Australia and the UK via Asia and the Middle East. The launch of the Qantas direct flight from Perth to London, clocking in at around 17 hours, is a real game changer. This non-stop service really challenges the capabilities of what new aircraft such as the 787 Dreamliner can offer travellers.

Now, there’s more than 50 ways to fly to the UK and Europe. Whether you’re travelling for business a few times a year or that big annual trip; in business class, premium economy or economy; here’s all the ways you can fly to Europe with some surprising stopovers and top tips from our Travel Experts to save on your Euro trip.

Top tips for flying to Europe

  • It’s cheaper to fly to Paris or Rome than London if you can. Paris Charles de Gaulle is also a great way to avoid the congestion of London Heathrow.
  • Look for great airfare deals to Europe, such as Scoot fares to Athens or Berlin.
  • Check out the seasonality before you book. February is the cheapest time to travel to the UK and Europe, while the summer months (June to September) and December to January is high season and airfares will be more expensive due to higher demand.
  • If you’re flexible with dates and itinerary, March, May and October are other great months to nab a good deal on an airfare to Europe.
  • Budget doesn’t stretch to business class? Consider a mixed-class airfare where you can fly one leg in economy and another in business class on the same fare to save on the price of a full airfare in business.
  • Plan ahead! For earlybird airfares to Europe for the summer months, look at booking your ticket in September or October the prior year to take advantage of the best deals in market.
  • Ask your consultant about open-jaw airfares, where you can fly into one city and out of another. You can also opt for different stopover destinations on the way over and back.
  • Sometimes a stopover or two on the way to the UK and Europe can work out to be cheaper than the cost of a direct flight. Ask your consultant about the best value options for flights to Europe.

There’s so many routes to Europe via Asia, you can easily schedule a stopover in one or more cities, depending on which airline you travel with. The singapore airline now compared before covid, I like the service before covid. SQ was the best of all airlines but now I am going to look for different airline if I am travelling in asia.

A pc of cake or biscuit at least. The airport was like a maze need to take another bus to the main terminal to immigration.

Transfer within the same terminal and lots of facilities at the airport.

Even though it was a very full flight, the service was still excellent, the plane did not feel too cramped and cabin crew made a sincere effort to help passengers find overhead space for stowing luggage.

The overall operation needs to be improved. The in-flight services took forever and sometimes ran out of options.

Very slow check in. Food poor and some of the special meals offered were not available. Luggage then didnt arrive and still waiting for news 48 hours later

We were able to check in 48 hours before departure. The boarding was a breeze. The business' seat is very large with large tv screen. The lunch and dinner were excellent with selection of wines and other drinks. The seat was converted to a totally flat bed for sleeping which was very comfortable as well. We will definitely fly with Singapore Airline again in the future.

A very small gate at Singapore airport, lots of people packed into a small area…. A Petrie dish for infection. The flight was late although the captain did make up time. We had an aisle and middle economy class seat on the plane. The flight appeared to be very full. The seats were small, hard and very uncomfortable with minimal leg room. I’m a small woman and felt really cramped. My husband is a big man and stated he was unable to move at all in his seat. We were given 2 meals during the flight from Singapore to Brisbane. Our first meal was okay at best but the second meal was inedible. I think it was supposed to be veg in pastry but the pastry was full of air with minimal if any filling. The staff were pleasant and efficient. Getting off the plane went without any problems. It did take an extended period of time for our bags to come out onto the carousel. For the best ‘airline’ in the world, it was pretty poor. If Singapore is the best, what are the others like?

Always on time. Clean and good service as always..great food too..thank you SQ, the best airline in the world👍👍👍

The male traveller seated in the row in front diagonally opposite my husbands seat across the aisle as soon as the seatbelt sign went off moved across the aisle into the seat in front of my husband for the entire journey from London to Singapore he had his seat reclined and pushed back and the seat touching my husbands knees for the entire journey from London to Singapore. very uncomfortable for my husband.

Superb experience. I hope they bring back the fast track option at Heathrow immigration.

Had the salad which tasted awfully spat it out but still got food poisoning 1 after running to toilet crew would not let me sit near toilets I was stuck in window seat

Quality and tasty Food and service, bigger seat comfort and leg room, etc.

Overall emirates continues to amaze me with their. Awesome service . I had shifted away from emirates , because I lost luggage and watch in emirates in 2019 that drifted me away from this airline , but I am willing to give it try

The amenities offered in the Business class is far away less compared with other Air Companies. Emirates is going down in the competition pricing the same value as Qatar airways for example.

Premium economy on Emirate A380 is simply the best non-business class product. In fact its probably better than many business class if the seat isnt lying flat. The food and service is close to perfect!

Cabin crew were not welcoming.was expecting excellent after traveling in Emirates from Houston to Dubai.

Meals was mis-served inspite of selecting vegetarian food! I was served non- veg in both flights ie., IAD to Dubai and Dubai to Hyderabad. Staff was not that friendly

I never got to take my flight because kayak constantly changed my flight, sometimes without telling me. I finally called to verify exactly when my flight was scheduled, only to be told my flight was canceled all together. I had less than a month before I was supposed to leave and I was told it would take 20 business days to receive a refund. So I never got to take my trip to Dubai. Kayak is horrible with lousy customer service and I will never book another trip with them every again.

Check in and check out procedures Check in and onboarding was delayed by interval of 15 minutes .. total delayed by 90 minutes Bags took more than 2 hours to come out at Bali airport .. a very big wait after a 30 hour flight Bags were delayed for a very big crowd … 2 flights came in and their passengers were out sooner than ours

Wuhan - Dubai. Old plane: 1. Only USB charger. No power outlet to plug in.. 2. Super narrow seat layout 3. Toilet cover consistently fell down and hit my back when sitting on it.. :( 4. Entertainment system touch screen not sensitive, and need to press hard or use finger tips to hit. Crew were very nice and accommodating though.

No red vine, no whiskey, no vodka. No that I wanted all of them at once but still...

The flight was okay it was the kayak customer service that was poor, I have been trying to change my name on my flight ticket 3 days before my flight and nothing got done about it even tho I messaged so many times and phoned, all I got in return was that is was being processed and still to this day nothing has been done about it, I think it’s disgusting and un needed stress to the trip.

The food was perfect. The boarding process is a bit long. Given the late boarding time, I felt very tired by the time I was seated.

Traveling with the Chinese airlines , their service superior to the US Airlines , they are much more friendly and the seats are comfortable , In the past I flew with United , now ,United Airline will become history for me .

I found it weird that the quality of the flight different from Australia to Doha than the Doha to Berlin leg. The quality of the toiletries pack (was in a box from Australia) and then a proper bag from Doha. The biggest variation was the inflight entertainment, which had a significantly shorter amount of content compared to the Doha flight. My QSuite seat was also broken and did not recline all the way flat. Wasn’t the best and I wouldn’t be happy if I’d paid cash for the flight.

This is my first and last flight with Qatar because when we go for boarding pass in Delhi airport the team asked for money charging me for hand baggage which is technically including with my ticket so also we get one our temple pics I ask them to checking in but they tell me I have to pay $500 dollars for that additional which is not make sense than I diseased to throw away because I can’t take with us . For carry in beg also I pay some Indian n currency for the guy who help I already pay 6 passengers ticket cost me $8000 so really I’m not happy . PLUS MY 6 checked baggage was damaged I already claim for four beg at airport but now I’m worried about my stuff inside maybe broken too which is more expensive stuff me really bad experience

Bad experience with the delay n long wait time for connecting flight after missing the connection flight from Doha.

From home to the airport, you must mention the terminal ready.

Was required to print a boarding pass, which I'd prefer to avoid. Seat (economy x) was comfortable, service was excellent.

I had never seen any cabin crews behaving like that. They are not at all professionally fit for this job

Asian Veng meal have Non Veg items which is not ok. Pure veg meals option are too less and they have inclusion of Vedgan and Lactos etc... which is taste less

Boarding delayed, no communication. I left the lounge, and heard a final call, boarding started after a 30 minutes.

After going through security and waiting for the flight at the gate, there was no access to bathrooms and no place to charge a phone while waiting for the flight. But once I was on the plane, everything was very good.

There was no phone charger, uncomfortable seats, unprofessional flight attendants, didn’t like food

First class payment but wife’s seat broken, would recline but not lay flat. On previous flight, delays and ground crew malfunctions connecting jetway made us miss flight to Houston. I asked twice for a cart to assist us getting across the massive Istanbul Airport, but was denied. We are both over 70.

M pretty much done with kayak and all other booking webs and apps. Scams all around my long trip.. Losing hundreds of $$ in extra charges and delays. Done with Turkish airline too. I will never use Kayak again for any of my bookings in the future!

A very good airlines; we were pleasantly surprised by the attentive professional and service! Great job.

Leaving on time would have been a good start . Sat in plane while they cleaned around us . We got to Turkey raced to our next flight to see plane sitting at the gate 5 minutes before departure time to be told “ plane is gone “ while obviously it wasn’t . Showed them time on my phone before departure. Then “ gate is closed “ . Then he said “Instead of talking to me you need to go talk to someone else to get another flight “ . We booked business class no service waited in line to have to rebook same flight day later. Offered hotel room but wait for a bus to heard us to what I’m sure would have been cheap hotel. Opted for private cab and decent hotel at our own expense. Bad service at ever turn . NEVER TURKISH AIRLINES AGAIN !

I requested a special meal (kosher) several months ahead of the flight . It was listed on the Turkish air website that I had a kosher meal. In-flight, there was no kosher meal. I was not able to eat during the nearly 8-hour flight. There also was no kosher meal on the second leg of the trip. The flight attendants said there was nothing they could do. They had no idea why the kosher meal was not provided. Very bad meal service.

easy and perfect boarding; no change in scheduled flights. keep up the good work.

The flight was delayed and there was no response from Turkish Airlines

We were traveling first class. Checkin counter lady and her manager, both were in bad mood and did not treat us well about checking in the handbag. The gate agent took care of it right away. I travel Turkish twice a year in first class. No one has ever refused to check in the hand bag. Not sure, why this agent and her manager refused. Everything else was excellent.

Service for wheelchair person is very poor. No display at exit door from Delhi to Istanbul airport, so you cannot decide where to go, and the helper for wheelchair person asked $10.00 american money, when I said you should not charge or I asked him to take indian money. He said he needs only American dollars and bring me back and dropped me at the same exit door helplessly. I felt bad very much but was helpless. And ranaway. I was to take his picture to post it on the website. So many passengers were waiting for the help, ultimately one buggy came and helped the passengers and the driver did not ask any money. Please let the air authorites know the incident.

It would be good to choose between a Turkish based meal and an American meal option.

Sleep tourism set to be the biggest travel trend of 2024, Hilton report reveals

Grab your passport, sunglasses, and... pillow?

Suitcase next to a bed in a hotel

What convinces you to go on vacation? Is it a chance to discover new places? The thought of a few weeks spent soaking up the sun? Or are you part of the growing trend of people leaving their best mattress behind and traveling with the aim of getting a good night’s sleep?

The Hilton Trend Report , a survey of over 10,000 travelers from nine countries, has found that the top reason people want to travel in 2024 is to 'rest and recharge'. Sleep tourism – or the chance for a good night's kip – is motivating people’s vacation choices, from what they pack to where they stay.

A good night's rest drives travel choices

While the promise of a luxury hotel at the end of your journey might be enough to get you sleeping soundly, the Hilton report found travelers are taking relaxation into their own hands.

Because even the best hotels can't promise quiet neighbors, 33 per cent of those surveyed listened to music or a podcast to help them sleep on vacation, while 22 per cent broke out the earplugs. Although, with 10 per cent of travelers taking their own white noise machine with them, perhaps it won't be long before in-room noise machines become standard.

And gone are the days you’d choose a hotel based on the pool, the restaurant, and the proximity to the local cultural sites. Nowadays, it’s all about the bed. Okay, not quite, but 27 per cent of survey respondents said “staying with a trusted brand with a consistently good mattress” was important if they were traveling to relax.

We’ve long praised the virtue of the hotel bed , as luxury hotels have a tendency to kit their room with the best luxury mattresses . (You can actually purchase the Serta mattress used by Hilton hotels for your own home, and while it’s a premium bed, it’s cheaper than paying to spend every night in a Hilton.)

Beyond the mattress, 18 per cent admitted to bringing their best pillow with them when they traveled. Discerning pillow packers should look out for a pillow menu – a fixture of five-star hotels – which features a selection of pillows for you to take your pick from.

In response to this survey, Hilton has teamed up with sleep science expert Dr Rebecca Robbins to create a series of Hilton sleep retreats hosted at the Grand Wailea’s Kilolani Spa in Maui. While a vacation to Hawaii probably sounds restful enough to many of us, these retreats take relaxation one step further, aiming to provide an “all-encompassing journey into the science and practice of achieving a restful, restorative sleep”.

If you’re going to have to miss out on the Hilton sleep retreat, there are still ways to improve your sleep when you travel. Avoid the first-night effect with our guide to sleeping better on the go, and consider investing in some white noise for sleep , to prevent other guests from disturbing your slumber. Finally, choose a light-blocking sleep mask , and you won't know where you're falling asleep – maybe you're in Maui after all.
