Texas Eagle Amtrak trains stop in Dallas and can take you to destinations across the United States. There is service to Chicago and Los Angeles with many stops along the way. To plan your train adventure, here are the best Amtrak trips from Dallas that don’t involve travel in the middle-of-the-night or transfer.

About one hour away from Dallas via Amtrak train, Fort Worth is known for its cattle drives (pictured above), winter rodeo and barbecue restaurants . The Fort Worth Botanic Garden , Fort Worth Zoo and Sundance Square , which is full of shops and restaurants, are other great places to visit while you’re in town.

Because of the train schedule, you’ll need to stay in Fort Worth for at least one night or use Lyft or Uber to return home (drive time between the two cities is about 30 minutes). Hotels closest to the Amtrak station include Sheraton Downtown Fort Worth , The Omni , Fairfield Inn & Suites and Hampton Inn & Suites .

Austin  is a beautiful city full of  live music ,  outdoor activities  and  food . Travel time on the train is about six hours with an arrival around dinnertime. There’s plenty of nightlife  to enjoy after you arrive (and bat watching on the Congress bridge ). On the following day, you can explore top attractions, including the Lady Bird Lake Trail , the LBJ Presidential Library and South Congress Avenue . You can also take a day trip to Hill Country or Lake Travis (pictured top of page) for more things to do.

If you need a car,  Enterprise  is near the Amtrak station and pick-up service is available with a reservation. Otherwise, Lyft and Uber are ways to get around, or check out one the many  Austin tours to explore the area.

The return train to Dallas departs in the morning, so consider staying at least two nights if you want to sightsee. Marriott’s Austin Proper Hotel , Canopy by Hilton and the Loren Hotel are closest to the Amtrak station if you’re looking for a nearby place to stay.

For a relaxing outdoor getaway, consider a train trip to San Marcos. The San Marcos River flows near downtown (and the Amtrak station) and is one of the major attractions. You can  tube ,  kayak  or  paddleboard  down the river, and  glass-bottom boat tours  of Spring Lake are also available. Trails are next to the water if you’d rather stay on land.

Shopping at the  San Marcos Premium Outlets and Tanger Outlets  is another top thing to do along with the Wonder World Cave and Adventure Park .

Travel time is about seven hours and trains arrive in the early evening and return to Dallas in the morning. You’ll need to stay in San Marcos two nights in order to have a full day to explore. Check out the top hotels in the area.

San Antonio

If you’re looking for a destination that has something for everyone, considering traveling to San Antonio . The city is famous for its River Walk and historic Spanish missions, including the Alamo (also known as Mission San Antonio de Valero ). There’s also Fiesta Texas Six Flags , SeaWorld , Natural Bridge Caverns , San Antonio Botanical Garden and more to check out.

Travel time is about 10 hours on the train with an arrival at night. The train back to Dallas departs early each morning, so you’ll want to stay at least two nights in the city or book a flight home to have more flexibility. Several hotels (including Staybridge Suites , City View Inn and Holiday Inn Express ) are in walking distance of the Amtrak station, or you can rent a car (pick-up service available) or use carshare services to reach lodging that is farther away.

Almost 16 hours away from Dallas on the Texas Eagle,  St. Louis  is a fun vacation destination. The  Gateway Arch  is the famous attraction, and other great things to do include the  City Museum ,  Missouri Botanical Garden ,  craft beer scene  and the massive  Forest Park , which is 1,300 acres and contains lakes, nature areas, museums and the  St. Louis Zoo . For extra fun, you can plan your trip around a  St. Louis Cardinal game ,  Taste of St. Louis ,  Fair Saint Louis  and other  major events .

Trains arrive early in the morning after traveling overnight and return to Dallas in the evening, so you can technically make St. Louis a day trip. Lyft and Uber are easy ways to get around and there’s also a nearby connection to MetroLink light rail . For more mobility, you can rent a car at Enterprise (pick-up service available).

If you decide to stay overnight, the OYO Hotel is next to the St. Louis Amtrak Station, or walk less than 15 minutes to the Drury Inn or the stunning St. Louis Union Station Hotel , which is inside the old passenger train station.

Springfield

Springfield , the Illinois capital, is about 18 hours away from Dallas via Amtrak train. Top attractions include the  Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum ,  Lincoln Home National Historic Site  and the  Illinois State Museum . Plus, you can check out  Route 66 , including some of the original segments, and the historic  Cozy Dog Drive In  while you’re visiting the city.

The train arrives in the morning and you have the option to return same day in early evening. If you decide to stay in Springfield for a night or longer, the  State House Inn ,  Wyndham Springfield Center  and  DoubleTree Hotel  are closest to the Amtrak station and near tourist areas.

Chicago  is the last stop on the Texas Eagle route if you are traveling northeast from Dallas. It’s an overnight 22-hour trip with plenty of sightseeing opportunities once you arrive. World-class  museums ,  beaches ,  Navy Pier ,  Wrigley Field , Magnificent Mile and  Willis Tower  are some of the popular attractions. Music-lovers should also check out one of the many  live music venues and foodies should plan to dine at Chicago’s top restaurants .

Plan to stay at least one night in Chicago. The Texas Eagle arrives and departs in the afternoon each day, so you can spend about 24 hours in the city or stay two nights or longer to have more time to explore.

For Southwest culture, food and desert landscapes, head to  Tucson . Travel time is about 33 hours and you’ll spend a night on the train. Top places to visit include the  Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum (which has a zoo, gardens and museum exhibits),  Saguaro National Park ,  Mission San Xavier del Bac ,  Historic Fourth Avenue  and the many great  restaurants . For an epic long-distance Amtrak trip, travel to Los Angeles on the Texas Eagle. Travel time is almost 44 hours and you’ll arrive early in the morning at the beautiful  L.A. Union Station  near  Chinatown . Use Lyft or Uber to get around, or rent a car at Hertz or Budget (offices inside the station). Other  transportation options  include bus service to LAX Airport and Dodger Stadium,  Metro subway  and  Metrolink commuter trains .

What are the best neighborhoods to visit in Dallas?

Dallas is lucky, as they have the 4th busiest airport in the world, Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW). The DFW Airport offers 58 international nonstop flights, and if you combine those flights with the nonstop flights at Dallas Love Field, you have a wonderful selection of international destinations ripe for the picking. Make traveling to your next international vacation from Dallas easy as pie by considering some of these fantastic places around the world.

Mexico borders Texas, so it’s no surprise that it’s one of the easiest and most popular vacations to take from Dallas.

Mexico City offers a wonderful cultural, historical and metropolitan vacation with popular attractions like the National Palace in the Zocalo Plaza (a spot where many festivals like Mexico Independence Day and Dia de los Muertos are celebrated), the pyramids of Tenochtitlan and Teoutihuacan and the Frida Kahlo Museum. Galeria Plaza Reforma is a trendy boutique hotel for those who want to stay near Chapultapec Castle. It’s a short 2.5- to 3-hour direct flight from Dallas that costs anywhere between $220 and $500.

Cancun, Playa del Carmen and Tulum are popular beach destinations from Dallas and can cost as low as $150 for a direct 2.5-hour flight. All-inclusive resorts attract a variety of Dallas vacationers from Barcelo Maya Grand Resort in Playa del Carmen, perfect for families, to adults-only spots like Royal Hideaway Playacar.

Riviera Maya can feel a bit touristy for some, and with that in mind, you may want to beach-vacation in Puerto Vallarta. Costa Rica is a great option for those wanting a vacation that’s a mix between jungle adventure and beach relaxation. There’s nonstop flights from Dallas to San Jose and Liberia with American Airlines that take about four hours of flight time. Direct flights range between $700 and $900. For those who don’t mind a quick layover and a six-hour flight time, you can find flights for about $300 round-trip.

Consider a stay in the Manuel Antonio area of Costa Rica. It offers fantastic beaches and the Manuel Antonio National Park filled with cute sloths and monkeys. Iceland is bringing in more tourists than ever before, all of which are attracted to Reykjavik, the Blue Lagoon, Gulfoss and the Northern Lights. If you decide to take this easy vacation from Dallas to Iceland, consider renting a car to explore some of the lesser-known spots like the Seljavallalaugh pool, the Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon and the Vesturdalur Valley.

Belize is one of the hottest vacation spots right now, so those traveling out of Dallas will be happy to know that it’s just a short three-hour nonstop flight from DFW to Belize City. Flights average about $600 for nonstop round-trip flights.

There’s plenty of reasons to visit Belize. For one, the Belize Barrier Reef is a wonderful spot for snorkeling and their beaches are both lovely and relaxing. Canada is just a three- or four-hour direct flight from Dallas, making it an easy vacation destination for those looking for outdoor adventure.

A flight to Toronto is the closest from Dallas and falls short of the three-hour flight mark. This major Canadian city is the right choice for those who love a vibrant nightlife, blossoming food scene and city attractions like the CN Tower, Distillery District, Casa Loma and shopping in Kensington Market. It’s about $500 for a round-trip flight between Dallas and Toronto.

You’ll want to fly to Montreal, a 3.5-hour flight from Dallas, if skiing is a favorite pastime. It takes only about an hour more of flight time to reach Montreal from Dallas, than it takes to popular ski spots in the U.S. like Colorado or Utah. It costs about $500 for a round-trip flight.

On the other hand, Vancouver has an awe-inspiring setting for a vacation. How to Travel from Dallas to Houston by Bus, Car, and Plane

As Texas’ biggest city, Houston is one of the state’s most popular tourist destinations. In addition to housing NASA's Space Center, the city is known for its impressive museums, sprawling parks, and diverse food scene. If you live in Dallas or just happen to be in the area, you can get to the city in about 3.5 hours, as Houston is conveniently 293 miles (472 kilometers) away. There are a few different ways to make the trip, making for a feasible weekend getaway.

There are a few bus line operators that offer direct and non-direct services from Dallas to Houston: FlixBus, Megabus, and Greyhound. Flying, too, can be quick and convenient (and relatively affordable, depending on when you book). There are three carriers that offer nonstop flights from Dallas to Houston, including American, United, and Southwest. Nonstop flights take just a little over an hour, and a round-trip ticket typically costs anywhere from $150 to $300. The drive from city to city is an easy, straight shot along I-45, as long as you’re not traveling during rush hour. 

What Is the Cheapest Way to Get From Dallas to Houston?

The bus is the most affordable mode of transportation—especially if you would need to rent a car in order to get from one city to the next. Not to mention, public transportation is the more eco-friendly option.

FlixBus operates a bus from downtown Dallas to downtown Houston every 3 hours, with one-way tickets ranging from $9 to $19. Greyhound, on the other hand, runs buses every 4 hours, and one-way tickets start at $30. Buses depart from the Greyhound station at 205 S Lamar Street.

Megabus offers two services a day. There are two Megabus pick-up stations : the DART East Transfer Center and 710 Davie Street, in Grand Prairie. The bus arrives at the south corner of 4th Street and Broadway in Dallas. One-way fares start at $20, while round-trip tickets typically range from $30 to $40.

What Is the Fastest Way to Get From Dallas to Houston?

The flight from Dallas to Houston is relatively painless in terms of time and ease; flight duration is just over an hour, though this does not account for the time it takes to get to and from the airport, check your bags, and go through security. Flying is usually the most expensive option, but this might be your preferred mode of transportation if you like to read or work in transit.

The Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport is massive, with five terminals and seven runways. The airport offers service from 27 passenger airlines; of these, American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines offer nonstop flights to Houston, while Alaska Airlines and Spirit offer connecting flights (keep in mind that the Alaska connections tend to be long or overnight). One-way tickets start at $75, while an average round-trip ticket price usually hovers around $200. Depending on what time of year you book, you may be able to score a cheaper fare. How Long Does It Take to Drive?

The journey by car from Dallas to Houston usually takes around 3 hours and 30 minutes, depending on traffic and stops. The trip is a straight shot south down I-45. To prevent being stuck in traffic, plan to avoid rush hour at either end of the day. Otherwise, it might take you an extra hour to get to your final destination.

What Is the Most Scenic Route to Houston?

If you're planning to drive and are in the mood for a road trip, there are a few good spots to stop along the way: namely, Collin Street Bakery in Collinsville, Old Fort Parker; Fort Parker State Park; and the quaint towns of Centerville and Corsicana.

Can I Use Public Transportation to Travel From the Airport?

If you are flying into George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) , pick up the METRO Bus 102, just outside baggage claim in Terminal C. The ride downtown takes between 50 to 90 minutes and costs $1.25 (have exact change with you).

For those flying into William P. Hobby Airport (HOU), you can take the METRO Bus 40 from Curb Zone 3 outside baggage claim. It's an hour-long ride to downtown.

What Is There to Do in Houston?

Though the city is best known for being the home of NASA’s Space Center, there’s much else to see and do in Houston . In addition to visiting the Space Center, check out some of the city’s best museums. If you’re traveling with kiddos in tow, the Children’s Museum is one of the best in the country, as is the Museum of Natural Science. Art fans will delight in the Menil Collection, the Museum of Fine Arts, and the Contemporary Art Museum. There’s a surprising amount of green space in Houston, as well, considering the tangle of freeways and acres of pavement the city’s known for. Make plans to spend time at Discovery Green, Buffalo Bayou Park, and Hermann Park. And no visit to Houston would be complete without sampling some of the city’s best restaurants (the food scene here is to die for), like La Lucha, The Original Ninfa’s, and Xochi.

Can I change my travel plans?

There is no fee to modify a reservation but you may be subject to a fare difference if modified to a date less than seven days from your date of modification. Please note, trips modified inside 2 hours of a departure can only be modified once and are no longer eligible for future travel credits or modifications. You can login to your account at vonlane.com to modify trips departing greater than two hours in the future or call, chat online, or email your modification request to [email protected] . If you simply cancel your existing trip and purchase a new trip, your credit card will be charged for a second booking. Your cancellation will be governed by our normal cancellation policy which may result in a loss of fare or an issuance of Vonlane credit only.

Can I receive a refund?

Yes, all Vonlane tickets are fully refundable as long as you cancel 24 hours prior to the first leg of your trip. Tickets cancelled inside of 24 hours and prior to 2 hours before the departure time are re-usable for future travel at a value equal to the original fare paid. Vonlane credit for cancelled trips expires and is removed from a passenger's account six months after the cancellation date. There is no refundable or re-usable value for a "no show" ticket. Tickets cancelled less than 2 hours prior to the trip departure time are non-cancellable and nonrefundable. Trips booked within 24 hours of departure are not refundable to the purchaser's credit card.

Are there other fees?

When traveling with Vonlane, the only additional fee you may incur is if you choose to park your personal vehicle. Our terminal locations offer parking fees that are competitive with typical airport parking fees; therefore, you can still plan to pay less overall for your entire trip.

Are there baggage restrictions?

In order to ensure all passengers are accommodated, please limit your luggage to 2 bags of 50 pounds or less and 1 carry-on bag.

Is there a restroom?

Yes, every Vonlane Passenger First motor coach has a full restroom for your convenience. Unlike the airlines, you won't be sharing it with more than 100 people. Our coaches only hold 22 passengers.

Can pets travel?

Small dogs, weighing less than 10 pounds , in a carry-case that can fit by a passenger's legs, are allowed on a Vonlane coach. The carry-case must be fully enclosed and the dog fully secured in the case. The case is not permitted on any table, seat, or in the coach aisle. The case, with dog inside, must remain quietly on the floor by the passenger’s feet throughout the trip. The carry-case must not impede the personal space of any other passenger, their seat, or leg rest. Dogs that cannot remain quietly in the carry-case should not be brought aboard and passengers with loud animals may be asked to disembark the coach at a rest area. This is strictly enforced by our attendants. Cats and other animals are not allowed aboard the motor coaches.

Service animals that are "trained to take a specific action when needed to assist the person with a disability" are allowed aboard without being in an animal carrier. All service animals must be harnessed and controlled by the passenger at all times. Vonlane adheres to the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The ADA does not cover emotional support dogs. Therefore, emotional support dogs that cannot adhere to the pet policy above cannot travel aboard Vonlane. Here are the busiest days to travel at north texas’ two major airports..

Summer is approaching and Dallas Love Field and DFW International Airport will soon be filled with travelers passing through or heading to and from North Texas for summer vacation.

It’s “back to business as usual,” when it comes to airline pricing, said Hayley Berg, lead economist at travel app Hopper. Prices are in line or below last year and pre-pandemic levels she said, noting the travel app anticipates airfare for late May and early June at around $313 a ticket roundtrip. In 2022, that price was closer to $400 roundtrip

“When we hear the airlines say things like ‘efficiency and profitability’ it actually can be good for consumers because it doesn’t necessarily mean increasing prices, it can mean putting a more fuel-efficient jet on a route,” Berg said.

This year, airlines are “talking a big game” about travel demand, said Ted Rossman, senior industry analyst at Bankrate. Just last month at the Fort Worth Chamber of Commerce’s annual meeting , American Airlines CEO Robert Isom told attendees that travel demand is stronger than ever.

Rossman and Bankrate conducted a survey that found over one in three people are willing to take on some travel debt this year.

“There is sort of that, ‘You only live once’ kind of attitude that I think was accentuated by COVID, but was probably there even beforehand,” Rossman said.

“It’s kind of all about champagne travel on a beer budget,” he said.

At Love Field , Dallas-based Southwest Airlines is flying 15,278 flights from May 26 to August 10, with over 2.4 million seats available. That’s an uptick from pre-pandemic 2019 levels where the Dallas-based airline flew 14,473 flights and had over 2.1 million seats available, according to Cirium.

Officials at Love Field predict an average of 20,000 to 25,000 passengers coming through the airport daily between departures and arrivals. That number is likely to fluctuate but will increase during the summer holidays.

Love Field ’s busiest travel days are Aug. 4, June 9, June 16, June 23 and July 7, where the most travelers will be present based on the number of seats available, according to Cirium.

At DFW Airport , American Airlines is also flying more flights from May 26 to August 10, with 68,754 flights and over 9.5 million seats available. That’s 1,900 flights and a million passengers more than in 2019.

American is also flying to eight destinations in summer 2024 that the airline had not served in summer 2023, including Albany, N.Y.; Appleton, Wisc.; Manhattan, Kan.; Redmond, Ore.; St. George, Utah; Tulum and Veracruz, Mexico and Barcelona.

This year, DFW’s top five busiest days to travel will be July 8, July 25, July 29, Aug. 1 and July 7, based on the number of flights flown and the number of seats available, according to Cirium.

Increased capacity at the airlines has been a trend in recent years, as airlines with a variety of planes like American are using larger planes to fly more people to popular destinations. There have also been delays in deliveries with plane maker Boeing Co., making the airlines seek other options for peak travel periods.

This year, Berg said, there’s a behavior shift as people come out of the pandemic. Experiential travel is more interesting to passengers and more money is being spent on these experiences.

Some trending domestic destinations based on Hopper’s data include small destinations like Hyannis, Mass.; Bar Harbor, Maine; and even Cody, Wyo. These destinations in the U.S. are all trending due to their access to beaches, national parks and other outdoor adventures, Berg said.

If you’re traveling this summer, book now and book quick, according to Christie Hudson, Expedia travel expert. She said Expedia found that travelers need to book one to two months ahead.

“There really is a sweet spot,” Hudson said.

Dallas-based southwest airlines cuts out flights to 4 airports from roster.

DALLAS (AP) — Southwest Airlines will limit hiring and stop flying to four airports as it copes with weak financial results and delays in getting new planes from Boeing.

Both Southwest and American Airlines reported first-quarter losses Thursday. Demand for travel remains strong, including among business flyers, but airlines are dealing with higher labor costs, and delays in aircraft deliveries are limiting their ability to add more flights.

Southwest said it lost $231 million. CEO Robert Jordan said the airline was reacting quickly “to address our financial underperformance," including by slowing down hiring and asking employees to take time off.

The Dallas-based carrier said it expects to end this year with 2,000 fewer employees than it had at the start of the year.

Southwest will also stop flying to four airports: Cozumel, Mexico; Syracuse, New York; Bellingham, Washington; and George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston, where the airline’s major operation is at smaller Hobby Airport.

The closures will help the airline focus on more profitable locations and deploy a fleet of planes that will be smaller than it had planned. Southwest said it expects to get only 20 new 737 Max 8 jets from Boeing this year, down from the 46 it expected just a few weeks ago. It will offset some of the shortage by retiring fewer planes.

Boeing is struggling with slower production since a door plug blew out of an Alaska Airlines Max 9 in January, and that is frustrating its airline customers.

Dallas-based Southwest said that its loss, after excluding special items, was 36 cents per share. That was slightly worse than the loss of 34 cents per share that Wall Street expected.

Revenue rose to $6.33 billion, below analysts' forecast of $6.42 billion.

American said it lost $312 million as labor costs rose 18%, or nearly $600 million. The airline said it expects to return to profitability in the second quarter — a busier time for travel — and post earnings between $1.15 and $1.45 per share. Analysts expect $1.15 per share, according to a FactSet survey.

The first-quarter loss amounted to 34 cents per share excluding special items, which was worse than the loss of 27 cents per share forecast by analysts. Revenue was $12.57 billion. CEO Robert Isom said American is less impacted by Boeing's problems because the airline had already received hundreds of new planes in recent years. American has ordered Boeing Max 10s, a larger model that has not yet been certified by the Federal Aviation Administration, but those planes are not due to start showing up until 2028.

“If they don't get it together, we have also made sure that we're protected,” Isom told CNBC. He stopped short of saying American would switch Boeing orders to rival Airbus, saying only, “We'll take care of it.”

In premarket trading, Southwest shares were down 9% while American shares were up 3%.

Claiming the No. 1 spot as the best bread and breakfast in Fredericksburg is Hoffman Haus , a five-acre property tucked away on East Creek Street, less than a mile from the historic downtown Main Street. To provide a true B&B experience, this boutique hotel serves a chef-prepared breakfast in a picnic basket daily to each guest's room at 9 am.

"Travelers also appreciated how easy it was to walk from the B&B to the various shops, restaurants and tasting rooms nearby," the U.S. News profile says. "The property features an on-site spa cottage, where guests can book a relaxing massage, facial or body wrap."

Oklahoma man detained on Caribbean island for carrying ammo, family struggles to cope

A Fort Worth woman and her two children, now living in Oklahoma, are coping with a new reality after her husband was detained in Turks and Caicos following the discovery of ammunition in his carry-on bag .

Ryan and Valerie Watson left for the Turks and Caicos Islands on April 7 to celebrate Ryan and two friends' 40th birthdays. They were returning from vacation when the incident occurred.

When the couple went through security for their flight, their carry-on was flagged and searched. Officials then found a Ziploc bag of about four bullets.

According to Valerie, the bullets were mistakenly still in the bag after her husband had been hunting the weekend before.

The Watsons were questioned and charged with possession of ammunition. Valerie was released, and her charges were dropped after she had been detained on the island for days.

Watson's children, aged seven and nine, struggle to come to terms with the situation.

"This is just our reality, so I've been honest in the best way as a mom to young kids to explain what is happening," said Watson.

"They knew that Daddy was in jail because we talked to them about their emotions, watching them try to handle their big emotions. Yesterday was really difficult for me."

In Turks and Caicos, carrying ammunition is a serious offense that carries a mandatory minimum of 12 years in prison. In September 2023, the U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued a  travel alert warning Americans  after a tourist from Indiana got an eight-month prison sentence for possession of ammunition.

"When you realize what it was, in the back of my mind, I was thinking it was me, and that I had too much liquid or my perfume bottle was too big or something. And they showed us what it was, and immediately, my heart just sank and I had a pit in my stomach. We are in a foreign country, and I don't know what their rules and laws are," she said.

"I have a lot of help because I know that this is part of God's plan for us," said Watson.

The wife and mother also revealed that two U.S. senators from Oklahoma and the governor are writing "good character" letters on her husband's behalf, but there are no guarantees. The family is now waiting for the situation to be resolved.
