What if I miss my reserved time? Take your boarding pass to the ticket counter and they will issue you a new one for the next available tram car.

Is the tram car air conditioned? No, but the windows are open to allow for ventilation.

What’s at the top? There are two restaurants, a cocktail lounge, observation decks, a small natural history museum, two theaters showing State Park and tram construction videos, a gift shop, Magic Memories for photo viewing, and over 50 miles of hiking trails along with other nature activities.

How long does the tram ride take? Approximately ten minutes in each direction.

Do you sell out? The tram does not sell-out, but when parking lots are at capacity and/or wait times become excessive, we will temporarily delay additional ticket sales. For that reason, you may want to buy Advance Tickets

Are pets allowed? Only service animals are allowed on the tram. The State Park also restricts pets to service animals.

How often do the trams run? Tram cars run at least every 30 minutes and always on the hour. More frequent tram cars are scheduled as demand warrants.

Do you take credit cards? We accept Visa, Master Card, American Express and Discover.

Does bad weather cause the tram to shut down? Safety always dictates weather-related shut-downs. The tram only stops operating when there are sustained high winds and/or during electrical storms.

Do I need to make reservations for the restaurants? Pine Café, a cafeteria-style restaurant, does not accept reservations. Peaks Restaurant, a waiter-service dining experience, does and reservations may be made by calling 760.-325.4537.

What is the weather like at the top? The weather at the Mountain Station is typically 30-40 degrees cooler than on the desert floor.

When is it going to snow? During the past few years of drought, snow patterns have changed dramatically. In the 2014-2015 season, the first light snowfall occurred in November and the final, in mid-May.

When are you open? The tram operates year round, seven-days-a-week except September when a maintenance closure is scheduled. Check Hours of Operation for exact dates.

Can pregnant women and/or infants ride the Tram? They do, but we always suggest consulting with your physician first. The altitude change is approximately 6,000 feet during the 10-minute ride.

Do I need a hiking permit? No permits are needed for Long Valley trails, but a wilderness permit is needed if hiking beyond the ranger station. There is no charge and it may be obtained upon arrival at the ranger station.

Do I need a camping permit? Yes. The State Park charges $5 per person for camping permits.

Do I need to come all the way up the road? Yes. The Tram’s Valley Station is located approximately 3.5 miles after turning onto Tram Way.

Is the Tram wheelchair accessible? The Valley Station, the tramcar and the Mountain Station are all fully wheelchair accessible and A.D.A. compliant.

Can I bring an oxygen tank, stroller, walker, picnic chest, backpack etc. onto the tram? Yes, but you may be asked to make some accommodation if the car is crowded (i.e. folding the stroller, setting backpack on floor, etc.)

Are there any shuttles or busses to the Tramway from Palm Springs? There are not, but all local cab companies will take and pick up patrons at the Tram’s Valley Station.

Palm Springs Aerial Tramway

Top choice in Greater Palm Springs

This rotating cable car climbs nearly 6000ft vertically and covers five different vegetation zones, from the Sonoran desert floor to pine-scented Mt San Jacinto State Park, in 10 minutes during its 2.5-mile journey. From the mountain station (8561ft), which is 30°F to 40°F (up to 22°C) cooler than the desert floor, you can enjoy stupendous views, dine in two restaurants (ask about ride 'n' dine passes), explore more than 50 miles of trails or visit the natural-history museum.

The valley station is about 3.5 miles off Hwy 111; the turnoff is about 3 miles north of downtown Palm Springs. Cable cars depart every 30 minutes and more frequently during peak times. Online tickets are available from six weeks to 24 hours in advance and highly recommended to avoid often horrendous wait times. If online tickets are sold out, there is a contingent of on-site tickets available on a first-come, first-served basis.

Planning Your Palm Springs Visit

A quick guide.

the marley

Palm Spring’s is world renowned for our stylish hotels, great weather and stunning views. We are also famous for our many fine examples of midcentury-modern architecture and design that are visible throughout the city. The core-shopping district is on Palm Canyon Drive. It features vintage boutiques, interior design shops and unique apparel. It is also lined with locally owned restaurants, many with beautiful outdoor dining patios.  Palm Springs offers a wide range of outdoor activities including hiking, biking and horseback riding trails. For these reasons, Palm Springs has long been the preferred desert retreat of Hollywood royalty, presidents, wellness seekers, and sun-worshippers. The permanent year-round population is about 45,000; however, it doubles during the winter season.

Let’s get started planning your Palm Springs visit.

Great Weather

Palm Springs enjoys over 350 days of sunshine a year. You are at low risk of rain ruining your Palm Springs. This is because the beautify San Jacinto mountain range, visible from anywhere in the Coachella Valley, protects Palm Springs from the coastal weather.

Best Time To Visit:

The desert truly dazzles in winter. When much of the nation is facing months of rain and snow, Palm Springs, residents are almost completely unaware. This is also the busiest season, so be sure to book early. Fall is the shoulder season and a great time to visit. The weather is great, the crowds have not arrived, and you can still find deals. For the budget traveler, summer is the best time to plan your Palm Springs visit. If you don’t mind the heat and love to lounge by the pool, this is when you’ll find your best deals.

Palm Springs, California lies on the western edge of the Coachella Valley, within the Colorado Desert, and sits at the base of the San Jacinto Mountains. Things To Do

The desert easily lends itself to a wide range of itineraries. Some folks turn up to solely tune out, spending hours at the pool, spa, or on a porch with a cocktail mesmerized by the purple glow of dusk. Others book their days end to end with activities that start with early morning hikes and finish with lost inhibitions and music at a nightclub within the deeply rooted and energetic LGBTQ scene. In between, they hop around off-roading, getting an up-close look at the iconic windmills , feeding animals at The Living Desert Zoo , taking a Red Jeep Tour , hitting a museum , or discovering a cactarium at Moorten Botanical Garden.

Where to eat and drink.

Palm Springs is fortunate to have mostly locally owned, and often chef owned, eateries.

For the families, consider the more family style Mexican fair. Being close to the Mexican boarder, you can expect authentic dishes. One of the most popular and longest running Mexican restaurants in Palm Springs is Las Casuelas .

las casuals palm springs

For the more health conscious, there are a number of farm-to-table style restaurants. In the heart of downtown in FARM , which offers French style dishes. There are also plenty of options for vegetarians and vegans. Making good use of all that produce is the founder of the first national vegan chain Native Foods. She also opened the very popular Chef Tanya’s Kitchen. For a more upscale experience, consider the James Beard Award winner Workshop Kitchen + Bar, who sources a majority of their ingredients from within an hour of their tables.

Lively day eating and drinking scenes are at a number of resort pools. The Ace Hotel and Swim Club has plenty of poolside entertainment. Their onsite restaurant was one of the early Denny’s. Keeping with the original vide, Highways is a great choice for any visit. You will love the colors of the Saguaro, which are so popular on Instagram. Stop by on Tuesday for Taco specials. They also have one of the largest tequila collections in the Palm Springs.

Once the sun goes down, the action moves to tiki bars. Bootlegger Tiki, The Reef, and Tonga Hut offer tropical cocktail lounges. While you can still feast on filets and get buzzed on bourbon and martinis at plenty of meat-forward joints, consider some like entertainment at a supper club. The Purple room, when Frank Sinatra and the rat pack once sang, now offers dinner and a show. Another option for the more daring is the Palm Springs Underground, preparing extravagant themed dinners and entertainment.

Money-Saving Tips

Due to the summer heat, July, August, and September is the slow season. Therefore, if you can stomach the heat, or are someone who thrives in it, you can cash in on big hotel deals or easily score prime rentals and timeshare slots.

If you aren’t attending one of the music festivals in April, avoid those weekends if you can. They mark the most crowded and expensive time of the year to visit. Even budget motels ask several hundreds of dollars a night. Traffic ratchets up, and lines are long. If you are a ticket holder, secure accommodations early.

Explore Palm Springs Care/Free

Check attraction websites to see if there are weekly or monthly free days or discounts for active-duty military, seniors, or AAA members. For instance, the Palm Springs Art Museum is free every Thursday night from 5 to  7 p.m. (times may vary).

Attend the free VillageFest every Thursday night in downtown Palm Springs.  Here you will find an array of artists, food and fun.

Ostich, who was born just an hour outside of Palm Springs, has plenty of ideas about what visitors should do once here — it’s all about seeing the town from every angle, including from inside some of its coolest homes. You can also see the city from above. “Palm Springs is home to the largest rotating tram in the world, taking you up to an alpine forest in minutes,” Ostrich says. Music festivals: Coachella, Stagecoach 2024

Some of the world's biggest music festivals take place in Indio, and when spring arrives, that means it's almost show time.

The Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival returns for two weekends on April 12-14 and April 19-21 at the Empire Polo Club in Indio.  Headliners include Lana Del Rey, Tyler, The Creator and Doja Cat . Anaheim pop-punk and ska band No Doubt, featuring Gwen Stefani, Tony Kanal, Tom Dumont and Adrian Young, will also have a reunion. It will mark the first time in nearly 10 years since the group performed together. Weekend 1 is sold out, but Weekend 2 passes are still available for purchase at https://coachella.com

If you're not ready to fully commit to Coachella, you can check out a side festival that Los Angeles promoter Goldenvoice is putting on at the Palm Springs Surf Club on April 13-14 and April 20-21. The Goldenvoice Surf Club event will feature performances by electronic dance music and alt pop artists on the Coachella lineup such as Bicep, Jungle, Neil Frances and more.

The Stagecoach country music festival is also selling a limited number of passes currently − this comes after it sold out in October. Stagecoach is scheduled for April 26-28, 2024, at the Empire Polo Club. The  headliners are Eric Church, Miranda Lambert and Morgan Wallen .

Wildflowers in the Palm Springs area spring 2024

Winter showers have brought blooming, colorful wildflowers to our area. Remember to stop and smell the desert lavender and Forget-Me-Nots the next time you're walking through a vibrant area.

Luscious grasses and wildflowers are beginning to grow at the Oswit Canyon, located on South Palm Canyon Drive in Palm Springs. Walk along the loop trail to take in the colorful growth, along with impressive views from the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto mountains. The farther you go in this area — past the loop trail sign — the more beauty you'll see.

The Anza-Borrego Desert State Park is technically outside of the Coachella Valley, but it's totally worth a drive to see some beautiful flowers. There's even an interactive park map available so visitors know exactly where wildflowers are currently blooming. Visit https://theabf.org/experience-anza-borrego/wildflowers/ for more information.
