The Best Art Supply Travel Bags for Transporting Your Tools

By The ARTnews Recommends Editors

The ARTnews Recommends Editors

Travel bag and brushes

Traveling with your art supplies can be cumbersome and even harrowing—unless you have the right bag to pack them in. If you’re a painter, you probably want separate pouches for your brushes that can keep them secure; you might even want to carry an easel. If you’re a sculptor, you likely have many oddly shaped tools. It’s important to think about organization when browsing for a travel bag, but don’t forget to consider comfort: Is a backpack, messenger bag, or briefcase-style carrier best for your journey? To help you decide, we’ve found five artist-friendly canvas or nylon bags that make commuting a cinch—whether to and from your studio, the classroom, or the great outdoors.

1. Doughnut Backpack

This backpack can hold a lot more than you might think. Its roomy interior can fit a lot of supplies, including large sketchbooks and a 15-inch laptop; the bag’s boxy shape makes it especially easy to slide in such items. Smaller materials can fit snugly into its several pouches, including three on the outside. Made of durable nylon, it is water-repellent, lightweight, and comfortable to carry thanks to padded shoulder straps and a padded backing, which also serves to protect its contents.

2. Tanchen 4K Canvas Artist Portfolio

This rectangular carrier is the largest option among our picks, measuring an impressive 20 by 26 inches. It can carry large sketchbooks or drawing boards, a small portable easel, all the paint tubes you want, and even finished art. In addition to one main compartment that extends the length and depth of the bag, you get four exterior pockets of different sizes that either buckle or zip closed. Choose from army green or gray.

3. Martin Universal Design Just Stow-It Messenger Bag

This bag is like a briefcase on wheels for artists. Featuring casters and a retractable handle, it’s highly convenient to pull around town while keeping all your materials in place and protected. The front unzips to reveal a brush holder, elastic pockets, and zip pockets, while the top has a flap top that conceals a roomy interior—perfect for sketchbooks, a laptop, and larger items. Additional side pockets offer quick access to your favorite tools. The boxy structure is rugged and firm.

4. Etchr Slate Satchel 2 in 1 Bag

This smartly designed satchel can hold a lot more than you’d think. Perfect for field drawing or painting, it opens up to reveal dozens of individual holders for brushes, markers, and other tools, and four elastic bands designed to hold the corners of an A4 sketchpad. You can even use it to hold a tablet! An outside pocket provides more space for extra tools, like a paint palette or paint tubes.

5. Royal & Langnickel Art Cargo Carry Bag

Designed by artists for artists, this bag boasts a sturdy, utilitarian construction. It measures 15 by 20 inches and expands to fit loads of supplies in its main compartment, accessible once you open the flap. Even more can be slipped into zippered pockets of different sizes; the main one is large enough to hold sketchbooks, canvases, and paint palettes. It comes with a good-quality brush wrap and two other holders for drawing or painting tools; all three are detachable. Although this bag might appear cumbersome, it packs up very neatly, with double buckles for security, and the spread of pockets results in good weight distribution. Plus, the canvas exterior is lightweight and hard-wearing, making this a bag you can carry daily, either by a shoulder strap or a handle at the top.

My Pick: RAINS Waterproof Backpack

RAINS Backpack Mini

This backpack is a scaled-down version of RAINS’ classic design, perfect for both genders.

I particularly like the central strap with a carabiner closure. And that itt’s fully waterproof. The material is 100% polyester coated with RAINS’ signature PU fabric for durability and a smooth feel.

The main compartment is spacious, and there’s a flat laptop pocket that fits my iPad Pro 12.9″ in protective case and a felt pouch easily.

I really love that there’s also a hidden external phone pocket on the back panel where I usually put my phone and wallet when I am in crowded street. Makes it very easy to protect my valuables against the pick pockets.

What Makes it Great for Artists?

  • Weather Resistance : A waterproof rating of W3 keeps your iPad, sketchbooks, and art supplies safe from light rain.
  • Compact Size : H15 x W11 x D4.7 inches. Easy to carry while still offering enough room for essentials.
  • Quick Access : Padded back panel with a zip pocket for your most-used items like pens or a small sketch pad.
  • Customization : Adjustable backstraps make it versatile enough for any artist.

I think the mix of utility and design makes this a solid choice for various needs. The carabiner closure is both stylish and functional, while the waterproofing is super reliable. All in all, it’s a well-thought-out backpack that doesn’t skimp on features or aesthetics.

In my review of iPad 12.9″ for drawing and Procreate , I show I am easilly able to fit my iPad Pro 12.9″ into my RAINS backpack.

From what I’ve seen, Fjallraven backpacks are a reliable pick for artists. They’re versatile, durable, and offer enough space and organization to suit a variety of artistic needs. The key is to consider what specific requirements you have—like laptop storage, portability, or specialized compartments—and then choose the model that fits those needs best.

Excellent for artists who want a neatly compartmentalized space. Perfect as a bag-in-bag option or stand-alone, but remember the strap is extra.

Cocoon Grid-It Organizer

Cocoon Accessory Organizer

Why I like it : Great for smaller items and those who want a simple, but effective, organizational grid. Ideal for the minimalist artist focused on small to medium-sized supplies.

Main Criteria for Choosing an Artist Backpack and Bag for Art Supplies

Choosing the right bag for your art supplies is crucial, especially when you’re planning to create art outdoors or need to transport your gear often.

I’ve been in the field for 15 years, and I can tell you, having the wrong bag can make your creative journey a hassle.

So here are the main criteria to consider when selecting a bag for your art needs:

Type of Bag

  • Plein Air Bags/Backpacks : Ideal for outdoor painting, these should be easy to carry and access.
  • Art Satchels : Great for quick trips and less gear, these are shoulder bags with various pockets.
  • Bags for Art Supplies : These are designed to accommodate a range of supplies from sketchbooks to paints.
  • Cases for Art Supplies : Hard cases to protect sensitive items like pastels or charcoal.
  • Art Portfolio Cases : For transporting finished work, look for something rigid to protect your art.
  • Laptop Backpacks : If you’re a digital artist, you might need a separate compartment for your laptop.
  • Aesthetic Backpacks : If you want to express your style, go for a bag that aligns with your aesthetic.
  • Volume: Make sure the bag is spacious enough for all your gear but not so big that it becomes cumbersome.
  • Compartments: More compartments are generally better for organization.

Durability can make or break your experience with an art bag.

Based on my observations, weather-resistant materials like canvas or nylon are the way to go. And don’t overlook zippers and straps; weak ones can lead to disasters.

When it comes to comfort, there are key elements to focus on:

Comfort is vital, especially if you’re carrying around supplies all day. Padded and adjustable straps are your friends here.

Functionality vs. Style

When choosing between a functional bag and a stylish one, functionality should win.

Although having a stylish bag is great, at the end of the day, it needs to serve its purpose.

Special Features

Some bags come with extra features like built-in easels or special compartments for brushes. These are nice-to-haves but sometimesnot essential.

In my experience, investing in a bag that balances durability, comfort, and functionality is the way to go.

For plein air, I’ve found that bags with multiple, adjustable compartments and a built-in easel really make life easier. On the other hand, as a digital artist, a dedicated, padded laptop compartment is a must.

Turning Everyday Backpacks into Artist Essentials

You don’t necessarily need a specialized art bag. Accessories like pencil cases, pen holders, and supply pouches can turn any everyday backpack into a practical storage solution for artists.

These can easily fit into the main compartment of any classic backpack.

For even better organization, you can add an art organizer designed to hold a range of art supplies. You can put this into your backpack or attach it externally for easy access.

Your aim is to achieve modularity; with the right accessories, you can make any backpack fit your unique needs.

Travel Art Supplies

Travel art supplies are my adult wubby. if i’m going to leave the house for an outing or a night away, i always throw them in the car.  they are essential gear, packed year-round, and always at the ready. here’s my compact system that works great for mixed media art on the go., travel art supplies video, backpack cooler camping stool.

I originally bought this stool to use as my travel art supply bag in 2017 and I would buy it all over again today. Features that make it awesome include: it’s durable, waterproof, roomy, allows for hands-free carrying, and you always have somewhere to sit. Through the years, I’ve also found it’s convenient to leave open as you work so all of your supplies are accessible and contained.

cooler backpack stool art bag

As an added bonus, it’s easy to quickly pick up and carry off at a moment’s notice … like the time homeless men began to fight next to me and my sister as we sketched on a Chicago street.

travel art pouch

My all time favorite sketchbook is a Pentalic Aqua Journal sized 5×8 inches. It contains 48 pages of 140 lb (300 gsm) acid-free, European-made watercolor paper. The paper is the perfect weight and texture to hold up to multi-layered mixed media work. Six signatures are sewn into the beautiful landscape-format hardcover journal so the pages lie flat when the book is open. An elastic brush holder is attached to the top of the book, perfect for holding a travel brush.

Pencil Pouches

Pencil pouches keep supplies organized inside the cooler bag. Most of my pouches are Blue Q brand. Woven from 95% recycled polypropylene, they are easy-to-wipe-clean and have some awesome designs. Check out all their designs and sizes on Amazon .

travel art pouch

TIP: Make a paper tag labeling the contents of each bag and tie them on the zipper pulls. It helps when you can’t remember which bag holds which art supplies.

Water Considerations

Water is necessary for the creative process and sometimes when you’re creating on location, it isn’t available. If I know that will be the case, I put a small water bottle into my pack. Obviously, water is heavy, so I take a 10 ounce leakproof bottle and don’t completely fill it.

travel art pouch

When it comes to creating with a lot of water soluble media, a tiny spray bottle comes in very handy. Having the bottle tucked into the outside pocket makes it easy to access. Also in the outside pocket, I keep a folding water cup called an aqua tote . I recommend it as it folds flat and has outer pockets you can tuck art utensils in as you create instead of letting them roll to the floor. If you can’t find it, though, Faber Castell’s collapsible cup is a great second best.

travel art pouch

Pencil Roll

Having a pencil roll solves a lot of problems when you’re arting on the go. It keeps all of the utensils from rolling away and it enables an organized view of everything. Although I have some extra stuff, the vital items in the pencil roll for me include: a mechanical pencil , a Stabilo All pencil in black , a white Uni-ball Signo pen , and waterproof black fineliners ( Micron and Uni-ball Vision ).

In the “nice to have” category, I also carry a set of black Pitt artist pens in various sizes, a fountain pen, a uni-ball silver & gold set, and some monolith shading pencils.

Pencils, Chalk, & Rulers Pouch

Items that don’t fit in the pencil roll go into this pouch. First, it has a view finder that I received in an urban sketching class. The window measures 4.5 by 3 inches. Holding it up helps with composition when sketching plein air. It also serves as a template to create lots of thumbnail composition sketches before starting the final piece.

travel art pouch

Additionally, I carry a 6 inch right triangle ruler ( similar to this one ). It helps with perspective and angles, has a few different sized circle templates on it, and, of course, has a measured straight edge which can help with scale. I also carry a kneaded eraser and a clic eraser . For sharpening, I have a sharpener that can sharpen 5 different sized pencils . Lastly, I carry a smudge stick and 2 Lyra graphite sticks for large area coverage or marks (one water soluble and one not).

Watercolor Pouch

In my watercolor zipper pouch, I carry paints and brushes. There is a travel tin palette with 14 half pans. The tin holds mostly Daniel Smith colors from the Essentials set and the Primatek set . Additionally, I keep a book of Peerless Watercolors on hand.

Nine brushes grace my watercolor pouch:  4 travel watercolor brushes and 5 aqua brushes. All of the travel watercolor brushes come in the handy, protective reversible cases. I have an Escoda Kolinsky round size 6 that I adore. It’s the most expensive paint brush I’ve ever bought. I also picked up 3 assorted sizes of Rosemary & Co travel brushes . They’re also squirrel hair brushes and hold pigment beautifully.

travel art pouch

I have both Kuretake and Pentel Aquash aqua brushes. The only difference between the two is how you load them with water. I prefer the Pentel Aquabrush which comes apart so you can drip water into it. The Kuretake pens suck water into the barrel. Two of the Pentel aqua brushes always remain loaded with an inky water mixture for shading. The other three I keep handy for general needs.

Liquid Inks

travel art pouch

The liquid inks pouch holds tiny little plastic squeeze bottles . Unlike watercolors, these remain permanent when dry. Because the squeeze bottles come in an inexpensive bag of 50, I created one for each color of my liquid inks for travel. Both Dr. Ph. Martin’s Bombay India Inks and Daler-Rowney FW Acrylic Artists Inks fill these little 10ml bottles. They work great and remain drip proof after 2 years of use and travel.

Paint & Markers

Because the travel supply kit is typically for plein air art, I often paint landscapes which incorporate shades, tints, and tones of green. For this reason, I include a few small tubes of acrylic paint, including: two tubes of green, a tube of brown, and tubes of white and black paint.

materials for painting a pumpkin

For markers, I include a full set of small Posca markers . Full of acrylic paint, they are permanent, opaque, and work great over most media including watercolors. Then, I include a yellow, red, and blue Tombow marker . Tombow markers are water soluble. Having the primary colors suits all needs since they can be blended with a wet brush to create other colors.

Crayons & Colored Pencils

travel art pouch

Lastly, I carry a set of Tri-Tone colored pencils with multi-colored leads (pictured to the left). The Tri-Tone set is not water soluble, so they work great for fine details and the multi-colored tips add real depth to the artwork.

Weight & Distance

There you have it. Those are the travel art supplies I carry with me whenever I have an outing. I feel like some people might be concerned with the weight of the pack, so I weighed it and it is exactly 10 pounds. I’ve carried it long distances before with no problem. Also, I have taken this through TSA checkpoints countless times with zero issues.

What’s In My Travel Art Kit

travel art kit, portable art kit, diy travel art kit, portable art, art supplies for travel

Dear Wonderful, Creative You:

I am really passionate about making art on the go. Whether I’m camping for a week in the woods, in NYC for the weekend, or waiting in the doctor’s office, a travel art kit helps me put so much more art play time in my life. People ask me all the time about what’s in my travel art kit, so I want to share what I put it in and how and when I use it.

travel art pouch

See this teeny little art kit? This is the small version. Now of course, the even more minimal version is the small journal and pen I carry in my purse daily, but any other time I might have a few minutes to create, I take a small travel art kit.

The most important thing to remember is that if your travel art kit is not portable, you won’t carry it. And if you don’t carry it, you won’t use it. So keep it small and carry it!

Mini Travel Art Kit

For weekends, day hikes, afternoons at the museum, or long waits at the doctor’s office, I’ll bring a mini travel art kit like this one:

travel art pouch

Here’s some of the supplies I carry in my small art kit:

Small journal with hard cover like this Moleskine .

Watercolor brush with well of water.

Travel watercolor set . I made mine with a small tin, bottle caps, and squeezed in my own watercolors.

Drawing pens

Posca White paint marker

Fun and sassy recycled plastic zip pouches from Blue Q

Large Travel Art Kit

For a week’s vacation, art retreat, or an art date with friends, I’ll bring a slightly larger version of the mini kit. Again, I try to limit the supplies I bring because I want to be sure I’m willing to carry it around. As an added bonus, when you bring less art supplies, it creates boundaries that force you to push your own creative boundaries.

travel art pouch

Another version of my travel art kit is to carry a mini version of my paper cutting supplies. If I am not flying, have good stretches of time and no tiny hands wandering, I’ll bring a tiny cutting board, Excel knife, and small scale paper cutting project.

Make Art a Priority

I’m a big believer in the idea that you have time for what is important to you. Everyone IS busy, but paying attention to how you spend your time can often reveal how you waste time on things you don’t really value. I’m guilty of this too.

If the idea of being more purposeful with your time speaks to you, you might decide to try this experiment:

Carry a travel art kit all week this week. Use it for 5 minutes here and there over the next week. At the end of the week, spend 5 minutes writing about your experience, both what it was like to make art at different times during the day, but also what you learned about how you are spending your time.

Looking for Ideas to Make a Little Art Each Day?

For ideas on what to do in your journal, I’ve got just the thing. Starting August 19th, 2019, I’ll be running a 5-day Inchie Challenge.

The idea is to make a small piece of art every day for 5 days. If you sign up below, I’ll send you my Inchie Challenge PDF workbook with tons of fun ideas on how to organize your small art by themes or projects, as well as some emails that will help you prep for daily creativity, in just a few minutes. We will get you creating now, during the challenge, and beyond!

Here’s How I Make Use of My Travel Art Kit

On our drive up to Acadia last week, we stopped for lunch in Camden, ME. We ate under some beautiful birch trees, and I got to admire the color and texture of the bark, as well as the hydrangea blooms nearby. Before we hit the road, I had a chance to draw for just a few minutes.

I didn’t try to complete the drawing, just capture a sense for reference. These small stolen moments are a delicious way to insert more art in my life, and build inspiration in my journals. You can do this too!

travel art pouch

Daily creating is about keeping your art alive, making starting easier, and strengthening your practice of creative action.

Drawing What I See

Once we arrived at our campsite, I could see I had a wonderful space in which to create. I often had a bit of time to draw and paint in the morning while my son played.

travel art pouch

Working on Art in Progress

Frequently I create new art pieces when I’m on vacation, even if they are small, but I also enjoy tinkering with some pieces that are in process and need just a few minutes more of my time .

travel art pouch

Making Illustrated Lists

Another way I love to use my journal while traveling is to plan out the activities we will do on vacation. Illustrated lists are fun! For this one, we all came up with the ideas, I wrote and drew the pictures, and my son helped me color them in.

Completing a Small Art Challenge

This U project was an amazing way to create in short bursts of time. During the day I looked for U’s in nature and design elements, and then plugged them into the squares here. There are 100 in total so far.

travel art pouch

As you can see, I keep my travel art kit supplies limited, and work small. I find working small is playful, precious, and invites me to begin. That’s why this month I’m hosting an Inchie Challenge, and I’d love for you to join.

What’s an inchie, you ask?

An inchie is any piece of art, a few inches in size or smaller. For the purposes of this challenge, it’s 3 inches or less.

Join us! You can participate by creating a piece of small art each day from August 19 – 23rd, 2019 and posting it with #mindfulartstudio and tagging me @amymaricle

I can’t wait to see what tiny creations you make!

You may email it at your convenience if you still have it available to send. 2 days a week every week of the rest of my life I have day-long infusions which keep me tied to an IV pole for almost 6 hours each day. Working small and simply will be the perfect way to spend my time artistically and creatively. I am new to your facebook followers and I am excited about learning from you and others.

Cotopaxi / Away

You’ve likely been preached the good word of the packing cube, but what about all those smaller items that are simply rolling around in your carry-on? Enter: the travel pouch.

The best travel pouches will turn your backpack, purse, or any bag at all into a neatly organized Bento-like system, with a place for everything from AirPods to lip balm. Store your chargers and battery packs, small toiletries, first-aid materials, or some combination of it all. (My own carry-on bag has at least three pouches in it at any given moment, containing snacks, tech, and personal care items, respectively.)

Not only does this keep you organized, it can also make it easier to move your things between bags — you won’t have to worry about leaving any of your daily makeup behind if you can simply move the entire kit. These are our picks for the best travel pouches.

Best Overall

Mark & graham fillmore vegan diamond travel pouch.

Mark & Graham

Why We Love It: This sleek design has a diagonal zipper for maximum storage ability and an entire coordinating pouch ecosystem to build with it.

What to Consider: It’s a little on the chunky side, but soft sides should make it easy to pack.

The best pouches not only keep you organized, but are attractive in themselves and this smooth vegan leather design from Mark & Graham will look good in or out of your luggage. Our favorite feature is its unusual diamond-style zipper that allows you to open the bag nearly flat, maximizing your storage potential whether it’s toiletries or tech inside. You can choose from four neutral hues, all of which are water- and sun-resistant, though the lighter colors may show wear quicker.

Of course, you can’t stop with just one pouch. This isn’t the only excellent item in Mark & Graham’s travel pouch collection, and its companion selection helped push it ahead of the competition. There’s a smaller, more traditionally structured vegan leather Fillmore , as well as a bigger alternative with an extra jewelry layer in the Dual Travel Organizer . Want a flatter style? Go for the Everyday Italian Leather Pouch . You can construct an entire matching system for an organizational dream.

The Details: Vegan leather | 3.5 x 8.5 x 3.5 inches

Travel + Leisure / Alexander Huang

Best Leather

Cuyana small zipper pouch.

Why We Love It: This elegant pouch gets straight to the point, and can even be carried as a clutch.

What to Consider: It’s on the longer side so make sure to measure your bag first.

Cuyana’s simple, high-quality goods are some of our favorite accessories, and this leather pouch is no exception. Inside the gold zipper top, you’ll find a smooth pouch with a side slip pocket to keep your cards separate for easy access. There’s plenty of storage for items like a phone, battery pack, and small wallet, plus makeup. The bag’s finish is nice enough to carry it solo as a clutch when you’re traveling light, and the leather is certified by the Leather Working Group to be tanned responsibly. The pouch comes in five neutral colors and additional limited-edition hues, so it can match your purse or stand out in the crowd. There’s also a mini version available if you want something a little smaller, or to build a set.

The Details: Leather | 7 x 9.8 x 2 inches | 6.3 ounces

Caraa Pool Pouches

Why We Love It: These four pouches provide waterproof performance in a stylish package.

What to Consider: While it’s easy for you to see what’s stashed inside, it’s easy for everyone else to as well.

Why get just one clear travel pouch when you can get four? Caraa’s water-resistant Pool Pouches come in a multi-size set, with options big enough for your phone, tablet, Kindle, or just your cash and keys. The chic clear design has white vegan leather borders that add that touch of seaside style. Plus, the fact that they’re waterproof means the contents will be safe from any in-bag leaks (or vice-versa) and you can easily use one to bring your essentials down to the beach. Each pouch has a ring on the end to clip into the included carabiner, or for you to attach it separately to your pool bag (or bring along the whole set).

The Details: Waterproof TPU | 13 x 11 inches; 12 x 10 inches; 7 x 9 inches; 4 x 8 inches | 0.9 pounds (total)

Best Fabric

Topo designs accessory bags.

Why We Love It: These simple pouches get the job done with no fuss and extra durability.

What to Consider: Aesthetically, they’re more on the outdoorsy side.

If you’re looking for a super-flexible travel pouch, a canvas style may be your best bet. Our favorite fabric pouch from Topo is made from an abrasion-resistant nylon so you can just throw it in your bag and go without babying it, plus heavy-duty YKK zippers keep things secure. There are three sizes available: the micro, which Topo recommends for cards, cash, and earbuds; the small for pens and cables; and the medium for power blocks, small notebooks, and larger cords. You can also choose from several solid and colorblocked styles based on your tastes from khaki/forest to all black.

The Details: 1000D nylon | 4.75 x 3.25 inches (micro); 8.5 x 5.5 inches (small); 9.5 x 7.5 inches (medium)

Travelon Set of 4 Mesh Pouches

Why We Love It: Travelon applies their quality build to in-bag organizing, with multiple sizes and colors.

What to Consider: They’re only sold in a set, but they’re inexpensive enough that it’s not a huge concern.

Travelon makes some of our favorite anti-theft travel bags , so it makes sense they’d be great at organizing what’s inside of those bags, too. While this set doesn’t have the brand’s anti-theft features, the four mesh pouches do include sizes for everything from your cables to travel razors to a change of clothes. We prefer the four-piece set for added versatility and a choice between blue or gray pouches but, if you only want three pouches in a brighter color that makes the contents slightly harder to see, Travelon also offers a multicolored stripe option .

The Details: Polyester ripstop and mesh | 6 x 5.75 inches; 7.75 x 6.55 inches; 10 x 8.5 inches; 12 x 8.75 inches | 0.8 pounds (total)

Best Wearable

Cole haan essential pouch crossbody bag.

Why We Love It: This stylishly structured pouch can be worn as a wristlet or crossbody with a removable strap.

What to Consider: The leather may get damaged if you’re regularly taking it in and out of other crowded bags.

If you want your travel pouch to do double duty as a purse, this model from Cole Haan is the best option. Wear it as a wristlet or add the detachable gold chain link strap to wear it as a crossbody with a 22-inch drop. Inside the zip-top opening, you’ll find a lined cavity with a smaller open side pocket, with plenty of space for your phone, cards, keys, and other small items. The black and gold color options are both stylish and neutral enough to match most travel wardrobes, while the woven texture of the leather adds some extra visual interest.

The Details: Leather | 8.5 x 1.5 x 5 inches

Best for Tech

Bellroy tech kit.

Why We Love It: This organizer has a spot for everything, plus a slew of colors and smart design touches.

What to Consider: It’s on the larger side.

The more tech you’ve got, the more cables and accessories you likely have cluttering up your bag. Tuck them all smoothly away inside this sleek Bellroy case, which opens up fully flat for you to organize however you desire, with space for an Apple Magic Mouse, stylus, external hard drive, laptop power brick, SD cards, and more. It has a magnetic slip pocket, stretch mesh pockets, and a floating wall with an elastic cable organizer so you can tuck everything just so. The recycled fabric is also water-resistant, so any leaks in your bag won’t lead to a crisis either. You get nine colors to choose from, including leather-free options.

Too large for you? Size down to the Compact version . We also love Bellroy’s Desk Caddy , which sits upright on your desk and zips open to display its contents so you can easily set it up on whatever cafe table or coworking space is serving as your desk and still have all your gear within easy reach.

The Details: Fabric or fabric and leather | 5.1 x 9.1 x 2.8 inches

Best for Toiletries

Sea to summit tpu clear zip pouch.

Why We Love It: Stop using up your Ziploc bags and decant your toiletries into this solidly leak-proof pouch that comes with six bottles.

What to Consider: The short height may be challenging if you’re putting toiletries in their original containers.

If your main reason to buy a pouch is for toiletries, this clear Sea to Summit clear bag measures 1 quart in size and already comes with three 3.3-ounce and three 1.6-ounce bottles to stay under the required TSA limits. Both the bottles and the zipper are leak-resistant and the body is made of TPU film with welded construction, so spills won’t be an issue either (and given that Sea to Summit also makes some of our favorite dry bags , we think they’ve got their liquid analysis covered). Plus, you can remove the bottles and use this as a single waterproof bag instead as needed.

The Details: TPU | 4 x 8 x 2 inches | 0.9 ounces

Best Organization

Peak design wash pouch.

Peak Design

Why We Love It: This eco-friendly design has a multitude of slots and can hold an impressive amount.

What to Consider: It can be challenging to clean in the event of spills, but the interior pockets have pull-out linings.

We named Peak Design’s Wash Pouch our favorite for best organization in our toiletry kit tests , and were impressed by how much it could hold in its plentiful pockets. Nothing fell out of place even when we flipped it and shook it. It can sit upright on its own, or hang from its aluminum hook. There are a slew of its own organizational features, including five interior slide pockets, two large storage spaces, a separate, magnetically sealed toothbrush pocket, and interior and exterior zip pockets. Even better, it’s also Fair Trade Certified and carbon neutral, and the shell is made from recycled fabric.

The Details: DWR-treated nylon | 10.2 x 6 x 4.4 inches | 8.7 ounces

Best for Food

Stasher reusable silicone bag.

Why We Love It: These silicone bags stay sealed tight and can be used in so many ways, including in the oven.

What to Consider: The opening is on the narrower side if you’re hoping to really load it up (the bowl style may be better if that’s what you need).

But how, you ask, am I going to organize my snacks? With our pick for best pouch for food, of course. Stasher’s food-grade silicone bags are designed to replace Ziploc baggies, with a leak-free seal to keep the contents safe from bag grit (or your bag safe from potato chip dust). The line comes in six sizes from pocket-sized to half-gallon , along with additional stand-up models and bowls, but our favorite for starting out is the versatile sandwich size. These pouches can be used in the microwave, on the stovetop, in the freezer, and even in the oven, so they make a convenient extra kitchen accessory once you’ve arrived at your destination; just throw them in the dishwasher once you’re back home again. There are even 40 colors to choose from, so you can color-code everyone’s separate snack pouches, or just make sure they match your backpack.

The Details: Food-grade platinum silicone | 7.5 x 7 x 1 inches (sandwich) | 2.7 ounces

Tips for Buying a Travel Pouch

Decide what you will put in your travel pouch .

Your planned contents will determine how large a travel pouch you should purchase, as well as the materials. If you’re carrying larger things, naturally, you need a larger pouch. If you’re carrying tech, you’ll want to look for waterproof materials or a DWR coating to keep everything dry, while fragile contents may require a thicker or padded construction to keep them safe.

Consider its uses for the entire journey

Much like kitchen gadgets, the best travel gear has multiple uses. Will your travel pouch just live inside your backpack as an organizational tool, or is it going to do double duty as a replacement for a wallet or clutch? Do you want to be able to wear it through the airport when you need easy access to your documents? A travel pouch that’s going to just live inside a large bag or hotel safe doesn’t need to look as nice or have as many features as one that’s coming out and about with you.

Pick a material based on your intended use

As we said above, think about how you’re going to use your pouch to make sure you’re choosing the right one. If it’s an organizational tool, mesh can be good since it allows you to easily see the pouch’s contents. If you’re bringing it to a pool or traveling with spill-prone companions, look for water resistance; if you want to carry it as a small purse or wallet, you may want a more stylish finish, like leather.

The best travel pouches may be some of the most useful things you can carry. Rather than having to dig through a cavernous tote bag to find a mess of small things jingling around together at the bottom, they keep your items consolidated and easy to grab so you can find your spare battery pack before your phone dies. If you’re putting your carry-on in an overhead bin, a good pouch can keep anything you want accessible at seat level, without your things scattering around your seatback pocket. Or, if you’re switching bags, having the essentials in one small pouch will make for an easier transfer and lower your risk of leaving something behind.

Personally, I carry a tiny pouch containing my headphones, Band-aids, a tinted lip balm, emergency tampon, and some OTC meds in my everyday purse. When I’m going on the road, the pouch moves into my travel bag, and I know that I’ve got enough items on me to at least buy the time to get to a drugstore with minimal issue.

We’re hard-pressed to imagine a travel pouch you can’t take on a plane. If it’s tucked inside a larger bag, you shouldn’t have any problems (though if you’re carrying anything with a battery, it should go in the cabin, rather than your checked luggage). However, if you’re carrying your pouch as its own separate item, it may count as your personal item, so if you’re flying an airline that’s especially strict and are otherwise at the bag limit already (think carry-on and backpack, plus crossbody pouch), it may be safer to stash this inside one of the larger bags.

Consideration number one is always following the manufacturer’s instructions. You likely won’t need to wash it that often, depending on material and how you use it, but can spot-clean any spills or stains you pick up on the road. You should also make sure not to overpack it, which will put strain on the seams and zippers that can possibly lead to an untimely demise.
