Bemidji builds up in early season with mix of indoor, outdoor training sessions
Mar. 23—BEMIDJI — It's a rare March when the Bemidji High School track and field team can train outside.
The wintry forces of cold and snow often conspire to keep the Lumberjacks inside well into April. But not this year.
Bemidji's runners, jumpers and throwers have been able to practice sparingly in the elements early this season thanks to the unusually warm winter weather and lack of frozen precipitation. They put that preparation on display Saturday during the Northwoods Opener held at Bemidji State's Gillett Wellness Center.
In the boys competition, Bemidji finished second with 129 team points. Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton took home the top spot with 188, and Crosby-Ironton rounded out the top three with 51.
On the girls side, the Lumberjacks placed second, compiling 119 team points. Long Prairie-Grey Eagle led the pack with 130.5, and DGF finished third with a total of 107.5.
"This is our second week of practice," said boys head coach Steve Sneide. "We were outside last week, but we only had a couple days of school that week. So we really haven't had much (time outside), and we've been stuck inside the last week or so. It's been weird. Our distance crew, they'll go outside, but sprinters, we tend to try not to go outside when it's cold, because that's where you get injured and pull muscles and stuff like that."
Bemidji was back indoors on Saturday, which is more typical this time of year. The Lumberjacks are endeavoring to figure out the best course of action early this season, as cold temperatures and snow are still lurking — a heavy snowstorm is forecast to hit the Bemidji area in the coming days.
"It has been nice, because we have actually been on the track," Sneide said. "Usually, we're not on our track until the middle of April, it seems like. So we have benefitted from actually getting some time on the track. But (with it) being cold, it's give and take. Do you want to be on the track? Yes, we do. But it's cold. So we're shortening how long we're actually out there."
Regardless, the Jacks had the opportunity to compete against other teams for the first time this season, and it served as a good way for them to break the ice. With the pressures of section competition still far off in the distance, BHS was able to relax and enjoy competing while allowing newcomers to get their first taste of the interscholastic meet environment.
"The No. 1 (goal) is having a good time," said girls head coach Brian Berntsen. "Just getting on the track, being able to do the events, being nervous and excited at the same time. Getting the nerves out for the first time, because over half of our team is new this year to us and our program. A lot of them keep coming up (and saying), 'I don't know what I'm doing.' I'm like, 'It's OK.' We will get better every day. This is a chance to get on the track and get experience. That's the big thing today."
Bemidji posted a number of event wins in its season debut. On the boys side, Trenten Fredriksen-Holm topped the boys 200 meters with a time of 25.21, while Caleb Knott won the 800 with his 2:14.69. Tanner Johnson was right behind in the 800, clocking in second with a time of 2:16.16. Will Termont took the top spot in the 1600 with a finishing time of 4:42.95.
In the girls competition, Addison Maish claimed the 400 in 1:08.49, and Mia Hoffmann won the 1600, stopping the clock at 5:16.69. Hoffmann, Maish, Anika Harmsen and Lola VanEngelenhoven topped the 4x400 relay with a finish of 4:35.84.
For Berntsen, meets early in the season serve as proving grounds for Bemidji's runners, demonstrating what they are capable of and what they still have to improve upon.
"Sometimes, they get confident (and think), 'OK, I know how to run,'" he said. "And then you come to a meet and realize, 'Wait, there are others that run faster. OK, how do I get faster? How do I jump farther?' It's one of those things (where) now the nerves are out of the way. Now, you know what you need to work on and what you need to shoot for."
TrekNorth also had a number of runners compete in the boys and girls competitions. The SunDogs had two top-10 finishers in the girls 60-meter hurdles. Didi Ning Lafleur placed eighth with a time of 14.11, and Magnolia Londgren took 10th in 17.49.
Carter Derby placed 11th in the boys 1600 (6:41.16) and 12th in the boys 800 (2:46.46). Carla John took 12th in the girls shot put with a throw of 24 feet, 9.5 inches.

African sun and a howling blizzard: trekking through Morocco's High Atlas Mountains

HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS, Morocco — When we set off on foot from a tiny mountain town called Imlil, it was still early, the sky purple. The peaks towering above the valley were just visible in the dim light, with rocks and crag outlined in sharp blue shadows.
The High Atlas Mountains run roughly east to west through central Morocco. They're some of the wildest, most remote places in North Africa. I first glimpsed these soaring, snowcapped summits nearly 40 years ago.
In the 1980s, I was little more than a hippie kid hanging out in the nearby city of Marrakesh, meeting Berber tribesmen who came down from the Atlas region to trade. In those days, I lacked the equipment and experience to travel into the high country safely, but these mountains stayed in my mind.

The reason I'm finally able to make the trip now, at age 58, is down to two guides: Omar Iydar, who is a Berber, and Connor Holdworth from Scotland.
"I do this work as a guide for eight years now, like my grandfather and my father and also my uncles," Iydar said. "So I am really lucky."
Holdwsorth first discovered the High Atlas more than a decade ago: "It's a really nice mix of wildness and remoteness. It's really quiet here, especially this time of year."

Our first challenge was a five-hour trek to a base camp at about 10,000 feet on the shoulder of Toubkal, the highest summit in Morocco.
We picked our way over the rocky path behind a team of mules, their colorful red and blue saddles packed with climbing gear and food. The warm sun finally broke over the peaks as we climbed through a forest of juniper trees, raucous with songbirds.

The Berber people have lived in the Toubkal valley for thousands of years, planting orchards and herding goats. As we trekked higher, forest gave way to boulder fields, red rocks and growing signs of winter. We passed near curtains of ice.

At dusk, we reached the climbers hut. It felt sort of like an outpost on the moon, bright lights glowing from the windows. Inside, climbers from all over the world ate and gossiped and prepped their gear.
It was cozy and warm, but in the night while we slept, the world changed. A snowstorm swept over the valley, coating the steep slopes in polar white.
"We woke up to a bit of like surprise snow," Holdsworth said. "It's like icing sugar on a piece of French toast."
We set off going higher on Toubkal, wind so fierce we needed goggles to see. The gale nearly knocked me down. Up high, it was barren, scree and snow as far as we could see.

That might not sound beautiful. But there's clarity in high mountains, like a painting stripped to simple clean lines. After hours of picking our way over stone and ice, we reached a saddle between two gothic spires.
Iydar looked out and grinned: "There are other mountains, but the first mountain you should ... do, it is Toubkal, the highest peak. It's beautiful."
Through the blizzard, there were sweeps of sun and porcelain blue sky. Holdwsorth pointed to the Sahara Desert glimmering in the distance.

"We are so high up, we can see the curvature of the Earth," he said. "We look one way, and all we can see are mountains. We look the other way, we can see the desert. It's just awesome, it's really incredible."
It took me decades to get to that high place, so I just sat for a while, bundled in my parka, feeling breathless joy as I watched the light and snow sweep over towers of rock.

In an October 2023 interview with Mark Kadzielawa of 69 Faces Of Rock , EXCITER drummer/vocalist Dan Beehler spoke about the 2018 departure of John Ricci . The guitarist has since been replaced by Daniel Dekay , who has previously played with DIEMONDS . Asked how the reunion with Ricci came about a decade ago, Dan said: "What sparked it was a fight between John and his bandmembers. So then his bandmembers tried to walk away with the name, and then me and Al [bassist Allan Johnson ] said, 'I don't think so.' So, I went to John and I said, 'Look, you wanna put it together?' And he said, 'Yeah, okay.' And that was 2014. So we went for five years with John . And after the fifth year, it was the exact mirror image of 1985. John walked, blamed me, blah, blah, blah. 'See you later.' It was exactly as it was [more than three decades earlier]. It's, like, 'Oh, we're gonna quit? No, I don't think so.' We got Daniel Dekay , and here we are five years after that."
Regarding how he and Allan found Daniel , Dan said: "I've known Daniel forever. I know his family. I know his dad. He knows my daughter. I saw his bands around town when he was younger and stuff. And when he heard there was an opening, he called me up from Toronto, and that was it. So we never tried anyone out. A whole bunch of people sent stuff in, and thank you very much, but we never had to go to the list. As soon as he got ahold of us, me and Al just went, 'He's the guy.' And after the first rehearsal, he played the whole set. So that was it. He was in, and there was no looking back."
Asked what Daniel brings to EXCITER , Dan said: "Everything. He manages us, does all the business, keeps all of our shit together. There's no way Al and I would be able to do all that. It's just immense what he's done to it. We went to a complete different level in the past five years, and we keep going to another level because of him, what he does off the stage. And never mind what he does on stage. You know what I mean? It's crazy. For us, it's the best guitarist we ever had, and we don't wanna play with anyone else."
As for the possibility of new music from EXCITER , Beehler said: "Eventually [there will be]. Yeah. That's another story. It's taken a long time. After five years of John Ricci , we realized that we couldn't write with him anymore. We had one song after five years. And so now we're slowly chipping away at it. Eventually there will be new music."
Back in August 2022, Dekay told Metal Crypt about the progress of the songwriting sessions for EXCITER 's long-awaited new album. He said: "I think we were hitting a good streak with writing and demoing prior to the pandemic, and then the pandemic hit. Al , Dan and I live in different provinces in Ontario and Quebec in Canada. There was a travel ban between provinces. Old-school heavy metal sometimes means old-school mentality, which means not fully embracing technology. For us to write music and record music, we need to be in the same room. The pandemic really put a very fast stop to us getting together to work on music. By the time we were able to get back together in the same room, it was already time to get back to working on a live set."
He continued: "There are a handful of songs that are in various stages of completion. Some are done with vocals and solos already, some don't have any leads, some don't have any vocals. There are songs in all sorts of different stages. Plus, Dan Beehler has a million song ideas in his brain and Al Johnson has a million song ideas in his brain.
"The intention is still to release a full-length record and to give the fans what they want," Daniel added. "Even in my contributions, I do like to make EXCITER my own in the style that I play John 's songs and the style I play Brian McPhee 's [former EXCITER guitarist] songs. I do try and make it my own, but at the end of the day, for a new record, I want my influence to be felt, but I want it to be true EXCITER for the old-school fans because they deserve that, and the intention is still to put out a full-length record. I just don't have more of a timeline and we have to get through these live shows first. Then we can get together. We do it the old-school way. We like to be in the same room."
Asked who is responsible for the bulk of the songwriting for the new EXCITER material, Daniel said: " Dan and Al completely. Dan and Al get together and flesh out songs. It's incredible. Dan Beehler is a drummer who doesn't play guitar, but he'll hum riffs to you. He hums a riff. He's, like, 'Yes, I want a picking part to sound like, [ humming a rhythm ] I'm like, 'All right.' You flesh it out that way. It's very old school, man. It's very, very cool. Dan and Al telling me this is how they wrote songs in the '80s. Someone would come to the room with an idea or Dan would have an idea and hum it out, and John would play it on guitar, or Dan 's brother, Richard , was the fourth member of EXCITER . He would help out with songwriting and songtitles and lyric ideas and all sorts of stuff. It's always been a cool collaborative effort. Dan and Al really, they get together and bless their souls, man, they get together, and they come up with some crazy cool ideas. Then they send me their ideas that they recorded at the jam space together and I add on from there. It's a really cool collaborative process, but they're definitely predominantly the songwriters. They know what they want and I'm happy to facilitate their vision however I can."
Regarding a possible new label home for EXCITER , Daniel said: "Yes, there are three labels that e-mail me weekly asking when I'm going to have a record to send them. I don't know which of the three labels that we'll end up with. Maybe it'll be a fourth label. Yes, there's significant interest. Literally weekly I get a check-in from someone at a label asking if I have a record for them yet. They're willing to make offers without even hearing a song. It's pretty funny. Yes, there's lots of interest. I'm sure that we're going to find a great home for the album. We'll go with whatever feels right."
Ricci previously left EXCITER in 1985 following the release of the band's first three classic albums — "Heavy Metal Maniac" (1983), "Violence & Force" (1984) and "Long Live the Loud" (1985).
EXCITER 's latest album, "Death Machine" , which featured Ricci as the sole remaining original member, was released in October 2010 via Massacre Records .
Ricci , Beehler and Johnson reunited as EXCITER in 2014 and had been playing sporadic shows for four years before John 's latest exit from the group.
