Here's what time The Tourist season 2 comes to Netflix U.S. so you don't miss the action

O ne of the most fun new additions to Netflix U.S. in February is The Tourist season 2, the continuation of the international production that first aired on BBC One. The Jamie Dornan starrer then premiered on Max for viewers in the United States back in March 2022, but surprisingly, the platform dropped the drama, with no plans to stream the second season. Well, good news came at the end of 2023 as we got word that The Tourist would officially be coming to Netflix, and with that likely reaching a larger audience.

Netflix is now the U.S. home for The Tourist , and about a month after the season 2 finale aired on BBC One across the pond, the second installment will be available for us to watch on Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024. I'm lucky enough to have seen the second season early (thank you, Netflix!) and without giving away spoilers I guarantee to our readers that this is another fun ride! Dornan and Danielle Macdonald are fantastic again — they have such great chemistry — and we get to meet new cast additions along with a brand-new location.

The Tourist season 2 release time by time zone

So if you're itching to watch The Tourist season 2 on Netflix U.S. , be sure you know how and when to stream! The release date, as mentioned, is Feb, 29. We break down below the release time by major U.S. time zones:

  • Pacific Time Zone: Thursday, Feb. 29 at 12:00 a.m. PT
  • Mountain Time Zone: Thursday, Feb. 29 at 1:00 a.m. MT
  • Central Time Zone: Thursday, Feb. 29 at 2:00 a.m. CT
  • Eastern Time Zone: Thursday, Feb. 29 at 3:00 a.m. ET

As far as it's been reported by Netflix , the second season will only be available on their platform for U.S. viewers. We'll be sure to let you know if we hear of other regions. If you're located in the U.K., you can watch all episodes of The Tourist season 2 on BBC iPlayer, and if you're located in Australia, the second season should be available on the streaming service Stan.

If you're not located in any of these places, you might be out of luck. The site TechRadar recommends using a VPN to access The Tourist season 2, which is up to your discretion.

How to sign up for Netflix (and the prices)

Did you get rid of your Netflix subscription but want to jump back in to watch the new season of The Tourist ? Don't worry, we've listed simple steps for you to do so right here:

  • Head to the Netflix homepage and enter your email
  • Choose your plan (Standard with ads, Standard, or Premium)
  • Enter your payment method to finalize your account
  • Begin watching The Tourist season 2 on Feb. 29!

The act of signing up is very easy, but you might still be on the fence because of the prices. Fortunately, Netflix does offer three different plans to suit viewers' circumstances and preferences. For easy access, we've listed the breakdown of Netflix plans and prices below for you to consider:

What to expect from The Tourist season 2

Now, let's get into what viewers can expect from The Tourist season 2. It's almost here! I won't get into spoilers, of course, but coming off that season 1 finale, fans no doubt have so many questions that need answers. As you'll remember, Elliot (Dornan) tries to take his own life but finds hope in Helen (Macdonald) sending him a text message, presumably forgiving him for his past. (Or, at the very least, willing to move forward from what he did.) The second season takes place in a new location, with Elliot and Helen traveling to Elliot's hometown to find out more about who he is.

Like the first season, The Tourist season 2 consists of six episodes, making it a pretty easy weekend binge.

The official synopsis (via Netflix) for season 2 reads:

Elliot (Jamie Dornan) and Helen (Danielle Macdonald) travel to Ireland to find answers about Elliot’s identity, but instead, they are forced to face the dangerous consequences of his past actions.Netflix

The trailer gives us a better glimpse at what those "dangerous consequences" might be:

Elliot isn't in Australia anymore, but there are still people who want to kill him in season 2! Although the second installment poses a lot of questions at the start, we do get explanations and answers, along with major reveals. It's definitely a satisfying season, and the ending does leave the possibility for more.

The Tourist season 3 hasn't been announced yet, but fingers crossed that if the second season performs well on Netflix, we could be getting another installment from the Harry and Jack Williams series!

The Tourist season 2 is here. Emmy-nominated heartthrob Jamie Dornan returned to our screens in January as Elliott Stanley, a man we first found in an Australian hospital with no recollection of who he was, or why everyone wanted him dead. Season 2 shifted the action from Oz to the Emerald Isle as Elliott and Helen (Danielle Macdonald) made ever more troubling discoveries about Elliott’s past.

Read on below for how to watch The Tourist season 2 online for free. And, should you find yourself away from home, you can stream the series stream the series from anywhere with a VPN .

Release date and time:  The Tourist season 2 released early January in the U.K. with all 6 episodes available now on BBC iPlayer. ►  FREE STREAM —   BBC iPlayer (U.K.) ►  Watch anywhere — Try ExpressVPN 100% risk free

The Tourist, created by siblings Harry and Jack Williams, the Emmy-winning producers of The Missing and Fleabag, was the most watched drama of 2022 in the UK and a hit internationally, with season 2 proving just as popular domestically.

After learning some hard home truths about our amnesiac anti-hero, did Elliott manage to balance the karmic scales this season? No spoilers here of course, but we can say that season 2, saw Helen escort him to his native Ireland where they found themselves unwittingly in the middle of a bitter family feud and also hunted by brand new enemies.

Yet, as Niamh Cassidy (Joyride’s Olwen Fouéré) cautioned Helen in the series' trailer, “You don’t know him sweetheart. You don’t even know his real name.”

The second outing also welcomed Conor MacNeill (Industry), Diarmaid Murtagh (Vikings), and Francis Magee (Kin) to the cast, and delivered even bigger twists and turns than the first season of this compelling crime drama series. Read our guide below for how to watch The Tourist season 2 online and from anywhere in the world.

Stream It Or Skip It: ‘The Tourist’ Season 2 On Netflix, Where Jamie Dornan’s Amnesia-Riddled Character Returns Home To Ireland

Where Was ‘The Tourist’ Season 2 Filmed? Top Filming Locations

‘the tourist’ season 2 ending explained: what did elliot’s file say, jamie dornan “wasn’t pleased” with the ballet scene in ‘the tourist’ season 2 finale, new shows & movies to watch this weekend: ‘the regime’ on max + more.

The first season of The Tourist surprised us with a sense of humor that paired well with a character study about a person who lost his memory but knows he did bad things in his life, just by the fact that there are lots of people who want to see him dead. Season 2 takes the show out of the heat of Australia and to the chill of Ireland, where Jamie Dornan’s nameless character is from.

THE TOURIST SEASON 2: STREAM IT OR SKIP IT?

Opening Shot: On a train, an officer sees smoke coming out of one of the sleeper cabins.

The Gist: When the officer knocks, a bearded man (Jamie Dornan) opens. He’s in there with his girlfriend, Helen Chambers (Danielle Macdonald), enjoying a little weed. After escaping the people who have been after him in Australia, Helen and the man she calls “Elliot” — when they met in Australia, his memory was in tatters and he has no idea who he was or why people are after him — have been taking a train through Asia.

In their moment of bliss, Helen gives Elliot a letter addressed to an “Elliot Stanley” that was sent to the police station where she worked as he was recovering from the accident that robbed him of his memory. It’s from Ireland, and the letter included a picture of Elliot and a man named Tommy from when both were younger. “Maybe it’s time you find out who you really are,” she says to him.

The next time we see the couple, they’re beside a lake in Ireland; Elliot has agreed to meet Tommy at that location. After an awkward encounter with a stranger who wasn’t Tommy, Helen tells him that maybe he should shave down his massive beard to help Tommy recognize him. He walks back to the bathroom and does just that; that’s when three people in masks walk into the bathroom and grab him. He puts up a fight, but they manage to subdue him and throw him in the back of a van.

Jamie Dornan Is No ‘Tourist’ to Netflix

As The Pretenders play in the van, Elliot figures out how to free himself via some broken whiskey bottles and busts his way out of the back. The van chases him through fields and hills, and just when Elliot thinks he’s lost them, they catch up to him and grab him again.

A worried Helen finds the mess in the men’s room and calls the police, and a Guarda detective named Ruairi Slater (Conor MacNeill) responds — after having a crying jag in the station’s bathroom where he throws his wedding ring in the toilet. He seems intrigued by Helen and is disappointed when she’s reporting that her boyfriend is missing. Her police-trained instincts lead her to tell him what she thinks happened. They find the broken whiskey bottles on the road leading away from the lake.

At the police station, an older woman meets with Detective Slater; it turns out that the woman, Nimah Cassidy (Olwen Fouéré) is Elliot’s mother. She received a picture of an unconscious Elliot from the people who grabbed him; Helen introduces herself to Nimah and tells her about Elliot’s amnesia. When Nimah sees the picture of the broken whiskey bottles, the label gives her a clue as to where he might be.

Elliot comes to and finds out that the people who captured him — Donal McDonnell (Diarmaid Murtagh), and his siblings Orla (Nessa Matthews) and Fergal (Mark McKenna) — know him and want revenge for what he’s done. Of course, Elliot has no idea what that is, and Donal won’t tell him. Elliot’s resourcefulness helps him escape, but as Orla tells a mystery person on the phone, he has nowhere to go.

What Shows Will It Remind You Of? When the first season of The Tourist streamed on its previous home at Max, we said it reminded us of a combination of Memento and Fargo . We’ll stick with that.

Our Take: It’s interesting that the second-season story that Harry and Jack Williams have written for The Tourist has strong connections back to the first-season happenings in Australia, but is more than accessible for people coming to the show for the first time. That’s due to Elliot’s memory loss. Yes, knowing how he and Helen became a couple would be helpful — he did kidnap her back in Australia, after all! — but it does seem like the Williams brothers are structuring Season 2 as its own story, with its own quirkiness.

The saving grace of The Tourist has been its sense of humor, which is more up front this season than it was at the beginning of the first season. It’s there because otherwise the story of Elliot trying to piece his life together would be awfully grim to watch. We know he’s done some bad stuff in his life, and Elliot knows that too, even if he doesn’t know what that bad stuff was. He seems like he’s turned the other cheek with his memory being wiped, but he also still has the skills that helped him do that bad stuff.

The show’s humor comes from the fact that Elliot’s current persona is so divergent from the bad guy he once was, but it’s also because the people whom he used to associate with aren’t exactly master criminals. At one point, the McDonnells communicate with Elliot via a baby monitor with dolphin stickers on it, for instance. And Elliot has no problem laughing at the people who torment him, joking about Donal McDonnell’s rhyming name by saying “that would be like my name being Elliot McElliot.”

But there are also moments when the show means business, like when Niamh goes to the distillery run by the family that captured Elliot. Helen follows her there, and sees that Nimah isn’t exactly a kindly old lady missing her son. How that affects how Helen goes about looking for Elliot should be interesting to watch. We’re still charmed by Macdonald as Helen, especially now that she’s found herself and her purpose. It seems that her former fiancé, Ethan (Greg Larsen), hasn’t given up on them, but we like seeing her character in a better place with Elliot, even if that place is much more dangerous.

What we wonder is if the second season is going to collapse under its quirkiness. Detective Slater’s home life is, um, a bit complicated, strange and depressing, to say the least. And we’re not sure if throwing Ethan back into the mix, even if he somehow gets tangled up with the people chasing after Elliot, is the best idea, either. But there’s more than enough good stuff going on in Season 2 to override those concerns, at least for right now.

Sex and Skin: None.

Parting Shot: After a diving “accident”, a woman goes into a phone booth, makes a call and says “Elliot Stanley’s dead.”

Sleeper Star: Despite some of the reservations we may have about his backstory, we do like Conor MacNeill as the awkward, lovelorn Detective Slater.

Most Pilot-y Line: Ethan talks to a fellow bowler about his trying to apologize to Helen during a public “Ned Talk” while bowling gutter balls. That’s a funny scene but feels quite unnecessary, given what’s going on in Ireland.

Our Call: STREAM IT. The Tourist continues to be an interesting story about a man running from a past he has no idea about, with quirky characters and funny moments to go along with the action and character drama.

The Tourist season 2: US release date, cast, plot and more

The Tourist season 2 sees Jamie Dornan return as Elliot as the story comes to Ireland.

Jamie Dornan The Tourist season 2

Jamie Dornan fans will be delighted that The Tourist season 2 is finally here, with the whole series now available to watch on BBC iPlayer in the UK and Netflix in the US.

The Tourist season 2 episode 1 The Tourist season 2 episode 2 The Tourist season 2 episode 3 The Tourist season 2 episode 4 The Tourist season 2 episode 5 The Tourist season 2 ending explained The Tourist season 3 ▶ Watch The Tourist season 2 online

With the action switching from Australia's Outback to Ireland, the landscape looks very different from when we last saw Elliot. But whether he's running away from some mysterious pursuers or covered in blood, his situation doesn't seem to have improved too much!

Teasing the new series, Jamie says: "For the second series we pick up with Elliot in Ireland where he tries to discover his real family and get some answers on who he is. Whilst Elliot is in Ireland, he also gets caught up in all kinds of craziness with people trying to kill him."

He adds: "Family is a big theme in this series. We're dealing with a guy who has no concept of who he is, and you can only imagine how terrifying that is, but little by little there are these kernels of information revealed to him and he starts to piece his history together and his family history. It's not that pretty, but it's vital and it's a big part of our story."

Screenwriters Jack and Harry Williams — whose previous screenwriting hits include The Missing and One of Us — have penned the scripts of the follow-up series.

The Tourist season 1 was a big hit when it launched on BBC One and the iPlayer last January, with 12 million people watching it in the first 30 days it was available online. It then went on to have similar success on HBO for US fans. Here's everything we know about season 2...

The Tourist season 2 release date

The Tourist season 2 premiered on BBC One on Monday 1 January 2024 at 9 pm. The second episode follows on Tuesday 2 January on BBC One at 9 pm. Subsequent episodes air on consecutive Sundays throughout January. The whole series is available now as a box set on BBC iPlayer.

The Tourist season 1 was broadcast on HBO Max in the United States, but it has moved to Netflix for the second season, with all the episodes available to stream from 29 February 2024.

The Tourist season 2 plot

The first series started with "The Man" — whose name was revealed to be Elliot — waking up in Australia with total amnesia before he and Constable Helen Chambers (Danielle Macdonald) became embroiled in a cat-and-mouse game with mysterious figures chasing them across Australia.

The new series sees Helen accompanying Elliot back to Ireland as he tries to rediscover his roots, where they soon find themselves dragged into the dangerous whirlwind of his past life. An official synopsis reads...

"After their adventure in the Australian Outback, The Tourist’s epic second series follows Dornan and Macdonald’s characters Elliot and Helen as they travel to Ireland together.

"In an attempt to rediscover Elliot’s roots following his memory loss, they’re dragged into the dangerous whirlwind of his past life and are confronted by friends and foes both old and new, including Niamh Cassidy (Olwen Fouéré) and the McDonnell family – Donal (Diarmaid Murtagh), Orla (Nessa Matthews), Fergal (Mark McKenna), and Frank (Francis Magee).

"Detective Ruairi Slater (Conor MacNeill) becomes embroiled in the crossfire between the McDonnells and the Cassidys as the secrets of the family rivalry unravel."

The Tourist season 2 cast

Jamie Dornan ( Fifty Shades of Grey, Belfast ) is back as Elliot, while Australian actress Danielle Macdonald ( Bird Box ) again plays former Constable Helen Chambers.

Joining them for the second series are Conor MacNeill  (Industry, The Fall) , Olwen Fouéré  (Texas Chainsaw Massacre, The Northman),  Francis Magee  (Justice League, Then You Run) , Mark McKenna  (Sing Street, One of Us is Lying) , Diarmaid Murtagh  (Vikings, Outlander),  and Nessa Matthews  (Neon, HEN) .

Series two also sees Greg Larsen reprise his role as Ethan Krum.

The Tourist season 2 has kicked off on BBC One, and things certainly got off to a dramatic start with a big reveal concerning Conor MacNeill’s new character .

While the second season consists primarily of new faces, Jamie Dornan is back as Elliot Stanley, while Danielle Macdonald has also returned as his girlfriend Helen Chambers.

There's also a brand new location for season 2 , with Elliot and Helen heading to Ireland, where the former dodgy accountant digs into his past to secure his safety in the future.

Dornan recently explained how screenwriters Jack and Harry Williams convinced him to return for season 2 , revealing that the location change was key.

He said: "My thinking was, 'Where are we going? Like, if we're doing this, where are we going?'" Dornan explained.

More like this

"Because it was a bit of an upheaval to go to Australia, and the idea of going again so soon after… I mean, these guys [co-stars Macdonald and Conor MacNeill] don't have kids, I have three kids.

"And I took them all with me, they went to school there, it was a big thing family-wise to do that. And the idea of doing that again so soon wasn't hugely appealing.

"But luckily, Jack and Harry [Williams, creators] had plans to make it something closer to home, and I probably approved those plans pretty quickly."

But what else do we know about The Tourist season 2 and when will fans be able to watch it on TV and BBC iPlayer? Read on for everything we know so far.

‘The Tourist’ Season 2: Everything To Know Including The Release Date, Cast, Trailer, & More Info

Kimberly Ricci

Netflix is continuing to do its part to pick up damn fine shows abandoned elsewhere ( Lucifer , You , etc.) and give them new life. In this case, an adrenaline-fueled Australian series, The Tourist , will continue to maintain its U.K. home on BBC One and its Aussie home base on Stan, but in the U.S. the show’s streaming home is changing from HBO Max to Netflix.

In preparation for the second season, which arrives near the end of February on Netflix, the first season will land on the streamer on February 1. If you don’t want to know what has happened thus far (as well as some hints on what’s to come next), consider this a SPOILER WARNING.

The Tourist initially followed the fallout of Jamie Dornan’s character, Elliot (or “The Man”), waking up to find himself in the Australian Outback and not knowing what the hell is going on. He has lost his memory, so he’s obviously also clueless as to why a giant tank truck moves to push him into oblivion while driving. Throughout a cat-and-mouse plot, he attempts to piece together the increasingly cryptic puzzle of his identity before the bad dudes (or a crooked cop portrayed by Damon Herriman, a.k.a. Dewey Crowe from Justified ) take him out. Eventually, Elliot’s previous life begins to come together, and he is revealed to have formerly worked for a drug lord and to have played an active role in the deaths of drug mules.

The season ended with Elliot attempting to kill himself in a few ways, but he is unsuccessful in doing so, and so, where does this show go for Season 2? Quite a long way away from Australia, actually.

The second season picks up in Ireland, where Helen (Danielle Macdonald) hasn’t given up on Elliot yet and helps him continue to dig into his past. This won’t be straightforward affair, of course, and the pair will find themselves embroiled in the McDonnell family’s feud, and Elliot’s past horrific ways will figure into this new set of dynamics, too. Somehow, the overriding mystery of the show will grow even larger as Elliot gazes across the chasm of his misdeeds. (The drugging life is bad, kids!)

The first season starred Dornan as well as Shalom Brune-Franklin, Damon Herriman, Danielle Macdonald, Alex Dimitriades, Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, and Kamil Ellis. With the change in scenery, the second season will bring many new actors aboard, including, Conor MacNeill, Olwen Fouéré, Diarmaid Murtagh, Nessa Matthews, Mark McKenna, and Francis Magee.

Release Date

Across the pond, BBC has already premiered the second season as of January 1, which was the launching date for Australia’s Stan. Meanwhile, the binge-minded Netflix will stream the second season on February 29. As previously mentioned, Netflix will stream the first season beginning on February 1.

Yes, a trailer exists and shows Ireland isn’t any welcoming than that Australia for Dornan’s character. Crikey.

How To Watch The Tourist Season 2

Watch the tourist season 2: synopsis.

The 2022 hit thriller from the BBC starring Jamie Dornan returned for its second season in January, delivering another helping of gritty entertainment interspersed with uncharacteristic but perfectly timed humor. Read on as we explain how to watch The Tourist Season 2 online for free and from anywhere now.

When we first met Elliot Stanley (Jamie Dornan, Belfast, The Fall ), he was only known as "The Man". Having got into a car accident – if you can call a truck purposefully ploughing into the side of a car an "accident" – Dornan's character woke up in an Australian hospital with no recollection of how he got there or, indeed, who he is. Enter the ever-enthusiastic Probationary Constable Helen Chambers (Danielle Macdonald, Dumplin' ) who was assigned his case. The two began to piece together what little clues they had, racing to find the answers before his shady past finally caught up with him.

In Season 2 things are looked slightly different. We returned to Elliot's roots, swapping the Outback for the rolling, green hills of Ireland as he sought to find the truth about his past alongside Helen.

As well as Jamie Dornan and Danielle Macdonald, Greg Larsen reprised his role in Season 2 as Ethan Krum, Helen's ex-fiancé. That's alongside a bunch of new faces, including Conor MacNeill ( Industry ) as Detective Ruairi Slater, Olwen Fouéré ( The Northman, Texas Chainsaw Massacre ) as Niamh Cassidy, and the McDonnell family, compromising of Donal (Diarmaid Murtagh, Vikings, Outlander ), Orla (Nessa Matthews, Fair City ), Fergal (Mark McKenna, One of Us is Lying ), and Frank (Francis Magee, Kin, Then You Run ).

Season 2 delivered six more episodes brimming with shocking plot twists and top-tier performances from an exciting cast that you can stream now, find out how to watch The Tourist Season 2 online from anywhere.

What to expect from the tourist season 2.

Jamie Dornan in The Tourist season 1, episode 1

News of Netflix saving The Tourist for season 2 will likely be met with relief, as the first season concluded with a gut-punch. The show follows a man ( Jamie Dornan ) who wakes up in an Australian hospital with no memory of who he is. As a result, he has to work backwards to uncover the mystery of his true identity. Amnesia stories aren't new, but The Tourist gained critics' approval by carefully crafting its mystery to make the series thrilling and unpredictable.

The Tourist currently has a 97% critics score from 33 reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

In season 1, The Touris t's protagonist successfully discovers his identity: Elliot Stanley . He remembers he got himself into quite a bit of trouble working for a crime boss, Kosta (Alex Dimitriades), before running away with the boss's partner and $1 million in stolen cash. Even more disturbingly, Elliot remembers that he caused several deaths by forcing women to smuggle heroin for Kosta. It almost seems like his story is over when he can't come to terms with his horrific true identity. However, when his friend, Helen ( Danielle Macdonald ), considers giving him a second chance, it raises hope for the story's continuation.

Hence, both Elliot and Helen will return for season 2. Conor MacNeill, Olwen Fouéré, and Francis Magee have also joined the cast for season 2. Storywise, the show is heading to Ireland. Elliot will be returning to his Irish roots to delve deeper into his early history , which is still unknown. This means that season 1's aura of mystery and unpredictability will also likely be present in the new season. As The Tourist approaches its Netflix release, viewers can anticipate an exciting new adventure as Elliot continues coming to grips with his true identity.

Jamie Dornan is rendezvousing with The Tourist .

BBC has formally renewed the Bourne Identity -esque thriller for Season 2, with Dornan set to reprise his titular role as amnesia-stricken Elliot , per Deadline .

The inaugural six-episode season was released stateside via HBO Max , although a rep tells TVLine that the streamer is not involved in the Season 2 deal (that’s the aforementioned catch!).

“I’m incredibly excited to continue the story with The Tourist ,” Dornan said in a statement. “[Series creators] Harry and Jack Williams are brilliant writers and I can’t wait for audiences to see how well Ireland and its characters are utilized to keep them guessing as the tale progresses.”

Season 1 found Dornan’s alter ego being inexplicably pursued by a tank truck in the Australian outback. In the wake of an epic cat-and-mouse chase, The Man (aka Elliot) wakes in hospital, hurt but somehow alive — except he has no idea who he is. With merciless figures from his past pursuing him, The Man’s search for answers propels him through the vast and unforgiving outback.

In season 2, Elliot and Probationary Constable Helen Chambers (the returning Danielle Macdonald) head to Ireland as Elliott attempts to rediscover his roots. He’s quickly dragged into his past life, with dire consequences.

“ The Tourist was unlike anything we’d written before and we’re hugely grateful for the incredible response to series one,” said Harry and Jack Williams. “It’s been an exciting journey getting stuck into that world again with the quirky characters that were so loved, and seeing where we could take them next, whilst continuing to deliver a tonally unique and off-beat drama.”

Will Jamie Dornan return?

preview for Jamie Dornan Transformation Timeline

The Tourist spoilers follow.

Jamie Dornan's latest show was far twistier and way more riveting than your average BBC thriller, which is why we really hoped it would be renewed for a second season. And now, it has been !

Clearly, we were not alone in wanting more. At the start of 2022, the BBC revealed that The Tourist pushed iPlayer to its biggest festive day yet with 22 million streams across the service . That's a new record for the BBC.

In March, it was confirmed by Charlotte Moore, BBC’s Chief Content Officer, that there will be more adventures for us to get stuck into.

"In its first 30 days, 12 million people watched The Tourist – that's twice as big as the largest show, Stay Close , on Netflix," she said. "The power that the BBC has to reach millions of people is far greater than we perhaps realise."

With that in mind, here's everything you need to know about The Tourist season two on BBC.

The Tourist season 2 potential release date: When will it air?

While we do know that season two is at the very least on its way, they're going to test our patience on this one.

We know it will be back for six new hour-long episodes, and the Emmy-winning producers and screenwriters Harry and Jack Williams (who created Baptiste, The Missing and Liar ) will be back as well. But apart from that, we know nothing.

Taking into consideration the series dropped on New Year's Day 2022, and at the time of the announcement in March no filming had commenced, it's unlikely we'll see anything for a while yet.

We'd hasten to guess at some point in 2023 at the earliest.

The Tourist season 2 cast: Who's in it?

The Tourist's first season revolved almost entirely around Jamie Dornan's amnesiac "hero", but his fate was left up in the air by the end of that truly depressing finale .

After all, The Man (now with his name reinstated as Elliot) made several attempts on his own life after discovering that, pre-amnesia, he was involved in a drug cartel and was directly responsible for the lives of two women he forced into trafficking for him.

That'll do a number on anyone if they truly believed they were a good person.

Dornan had previously told RadioTimes that The Tourist was originally set up to be a limited, one-off series. But, after 12 million people tuned in to watch within the first 30 days, the Fifty Shades of Grey actor discussed the possibility of him reprising the role for a second time.

"I guess it's a little bit open-ended with the end, people still have questions," he said. "Obviously we had good plans for it, wanted it, but the response to it, as you know, has been insane and the amount of people [who have] watched it, and the love for it is very real.

"I saw something the other day that they said that there's talk of... they'd be looking into how they could do a second series of it if there is a want, and it seems there is a want," he added. So who knows, the plan was only ever to play The Man once, but we'll see."

Dornan recently admitted he had never played a character before who didn't know who he is, so he had to pull on experiences where he felt "lost or afraid" to inspire him in his performance.

"I've never had to approach a character before who doesn't know who he is, so it was almost like a total opposite process for me of not allowing yourself a backstory and accepting every single discovery he has as something new," he told Variety .

"I often tried to consider myself in my most vulnerable moments, where I've felt lost or afraid, and draw on those."

"I think the way it plays with tones, often so abruptly swinging from drama to comedy," he added. "Just when you think you have a handle on what's going on, you're proven wrong."

So, if Elliot does survive and make a return, then we can probably assume that Dornan will be joined in season two by Shalom Brune-Franklin as Luci and Danielle Macdonald in the role of Helen Chambers.

During an interview with Phillip Schofield and Rochelle Humes on This Morning (via The Express ), Danielle was asked if she would ever return for a second season. To which she replied: "Would I do another season of this? I would, of course!

"I loved the writing, I loved the character [and] I loved the world, I would hands down do it again but I have no idea if there is even any intention of that."

In terms of the other cast members, all of the following could also return for season 2:

Genevieve Lemon as Sue, Danny Adcock as Ralph, Damon Herriman as Detective Inspector Lachlan Rogers, Alex Andreas as Dimitri Panigiris, and Maria Mercedes as Freddie Lanagan.

Of course, it's not likely that Ólafur Darri Ólafsson and Alex Dimitriades will be back as their characters died in season one.

The Tourist season 2 plot: What will happen?

At the end of season one, viewers watched Elliot find out that he was a drug trafficker before losing his memory, subsequently sending him into a spiral in which he drinks a bottle of vodka and swallows a whole lot of pills in an attempt to end his life.

Meanwhile, a disgusted Helen has had time to think about who he is and is advised by a friend to accept him for who he is now. As Elliot lies dying, she messages him an emoji of a burrito, which was previously said to be Elliot's 'happy place'. After seeing the message, we see Elliot smile before the credits roll.

"After I finished the series, I called Shalom [Brune-Franklin] instantly," Danielle MacDonald told us before the finale aired. "And I was like, 'I can't talk to anyone about this, because no one's read it, and I'm not allowed to say anything, so I need you to talk to me about it. We just need to talk about this whole situation.'"

Before the final episode was made available to us, Digital Spy asked Dornan and Brune-Franklin if they felt like season one tells a complete story or whether they would want to return one day.

The pair joked : "The whole series ends with Armageddon, so life doesn't exist anymore." But now that we have seen the finale, it's clear that there's at least some truth to this when it comes to the fate of Dornan's character. To read more on that and his chances of survival, check out our piece about the ending right here .

But what do the creators of The Tourist think? While chatting with RadioTimes , Harry Williams said : "I would love to make this show again with these people. I'm not entirely sure it's possible. I love the tone, I love the world. It's been our lives for three years and we've been very, very involved with it, more so than any other show."

"We've loved every minute. Normally you're sick of it by this point having watched 900 cuts of one episode but I still love it and I'd love to do it again."

Co-creator Jack Williams added that they are "talking about how we could return to this world", adding: "Yeah, this world and this tone. I feel like we're not done with that. In terms of the story, we'll see how it goes if people like it."

Leading man Jamie Dornan explained in March 2022 that he wouldn't be against a return, but noted to Entertainment Weekly : "That wasn't the plan, to be honest. We all signed up for one."

However, he's not against the idea of going back to Elliot's life and uncovering more, explaining it's a similar situation to The Fall , the beloved crime show in which he starred alongside Gillian Anderson. " The Fall was meant to be one series," he said. "There was big demand for The Fall, obviously, and we did a couple more [seasons].

"In the UK and Ireland and Australia, and anywhere it's been so far, people seem to love The Tourist , so who knows? I know conversations are being had. So we'll see what we get to, but I would love to."

So, taking into account the finale now we've seen it, there are two ways this show could go. The first would be to make it some kind of anthology, where the entire cast is wiped out and everything is reset, with a new 'tourist' to focus on with as much trouble as Jamie Dornan before them.

The second would be to allow the character of Elliot to survive and try and make peace with what he's done in his past in some way. Guess we'll find out either way soon enough.

‘the tourist’ season 2 twist ending explained – what was in the file.

Jamie Dornan in "The Tourist" Season 2.

The second season of the Australian thriller The Tourist is now on Netflix. If you’ve finished the action-packed BBC series, learn more about The Tourist’s Season 2 ending , including Elliot’s true identity and what was in the mysterious file.

The first season of The Tourist follows an unnamed man (Jamie Dornan) being chased through the Australian outback. When his vehicle twists off the road, The Man wakes up in a hospital with no recollection of who he is or how he ended up there. When he leaves, it’s clear that people are trying to kill him, so Dornan’s character — with the help of Probationary Constable Helen Chambers (Danielle Macdonald) — set out to discover his true identity before it’s too late.

In the second season, Dornan’s characters, Elliot and Helen, embark on a journey to Ireland, hoping to unravel the mysteries surrounding Elliot’s identity. However, their plans take an unexpected turn when confronted with the dangerous aftermath of Elliot’s past.

“Helen is still curious about who Elliot is. She got this really shocking news about him at the end of Season 1, and it didn’t seem like something she could get over. And then they go off and they’re living in this fantasy world [traveling the globe], but there’s a nagging thought of, ‘What is his past, though?’” Macdonald told The Wrap in February 2024. “There is also an element of wanting to explore who he is that’s encouraged by Helen.”

The Dumplin’ actress continued, “So yeah, they unknowingly opened Pandora’s box in Season 2. And the moment they do, they’re trying to close it. But once it’s opened, you’ve got to go through the whole ride. And yeah, it’s bonkers. Season 2 is definitely even more wild than Season 1.”

There are six episodes in Season 2 of The Tourist , just like the first season. Read on to dive into the conclusion second season, including that twist at the very end. (Warning: Spoilers ahead of The Tourist Season 2.)

The Tourist Season 2 Ending Explained

During the second season of The Tourist , Elliot and Helen are traveling through Southeast Asia after leaving Australia. Things take an unexpected turn when they pursue a lead who offers information on Elliot’s mysterious past. When they reach Ireland, Elliot is abducted, and the clue is revealed to be a trap.

The orchestrators of Elliot’s kidnapping are none other than the McDonnells, who discover that Elliot is, in fact, Eugene Cassidy — a member of the rival Cassidy family. Eugene’s mother, Niamh Cassidy (Olwen Fouéré), is their leader and is entangled in a longtime feud with the McDonnells, headed by patriarch Frank (Francis Magee).

In Season 2, it comes to light that Eugene skipped town years earlier after fathering a child named Fergal with Donal McDonnell’s wife, Claire. Out of revenge, Donal shot Eugene’s brother, having mistaken him for Eugene. Claire wants Elliot to kill Donal, who was emotionally and physically abusive to her.

Does Helen Die In The Tourist Season 2?

Danielle Macdonald as Helen Chambers in "The Tourist" Season 2.

No, Helen does not die in The Tourist Season 2. In Episode 5, viewers see Helen get shot in the stomach by Lena (the woman who tricked them into going to Ireland in the first place) and is sent to the hospital. But after a speedy recovery, Elliot and Helen head back to Australia. Shortly after, it becomes clear that it was all a dream. The dream was meant to stimulate Helen’s subconscious feelings about Eugene and whether she could really trust him.

How Does The Tourist Season 2 End?

Jamie Dornan and Danielle Macdonald in The Tourist.

The rival families are on the brink of an all-out war. Niamh kills Donal, but everyone assumes that it is Eugene, and he is arrested for Donal’s murder. Helen doesn’t believe Eugene when he tells her he didn’t do it, so she breaks up with him.

Helen eventually comes around when she learns the truth, which is that Frank McDonnell hired the real Elliot Stanley to investigate the aftermath of the plane crash that claimed his father’s life. But Niamh killed him to hide what Frank and Elliot discovered: love letters exchanged between Frank’s father and Niamh’s mother.

There’s proof that Niamh and Frank are siblings, which “complicated things massively, and muddied the water in a huge way,” Dornan told Tudum of the big plot twist. “Elliot’s come in and just been thrown into the middle of all this with zero understanding of why it’s like this, and how he’s so caught up in it.”

After realizing the truth and Eugene’s innocence, Helen gets back together with him, and they relocate to a flat in Amsterdam. But that’s not all. When Eugene was arrested for Donal’s murder, an article had been published in the local newspaper. In response, someone tracked down Eugene and sent him a file with more details about his past.

What Was In The File In The Tourist Season 2?

Eugene and Helen decide not to read the file about his past as they no longer care what it says. Eugene places the envelope in the fire and lets it burn as the couple goes to test whether Eugene retained any of his dancing skills post-memory loss. (In Season 2, Niamh told Helen that Eugene used to be a fantastic dancer).

Thankfully, viewers catch a glimpse of the cover of the envelope before it burns away. There, it reveals Eugene’s true identity: He was a special agent as far back as 2005 and is on a “general assignment” for the “Sentinel” bureau, potentially setting up a third season of The Tourist .

“I think it’s purposely open-ended,” Dornan explained to Tudum . “I think this time they are leaving that to all kinds of factors – of if and when and how that would happen to do more – and to see if people want more. But that’s also a timing thing. Everyone’s busy! I’m busy, Danielle’s busy. So we will see, but they’ve definitely left the option open, I think.”

As for the dance sequence at the end, the actor said that “there’s very few shows that could get away with an ending like that.” He went on, “I think they’re allowed [it] because of the unhinged, off-kilterness of the whole entire arc of the show — you grant them that strangeness of that dance at the end.”

The Tourist Season 2 is now streaming on Netflix.

The Tourist Is Officially Returning For Season 2

And Jamie Dornan is having “conversations” about reprising his role as The Man, too.

Jamie Dornan as The Man in BBC's 'The Tourist'

Get ready, because the hugely-popular BBC drama The Tourist is returning for Season 2. As viewers will recall, the first series centred on a British man known only as The Man, who wakes up in hospital with zero recollection of his own identity. The drama was created by production company Two Brothers Pictures, which also counts Baptiste and Fleabag under its umbrella, and news of the show’s return will be more than welcomed by fans. Find out everything you need to know about The Tourist Season 2 below.

The Tourist Season 2 Plot

Per Radio Times , news of a second series was confirmed by the BBC in March 2022. At the time of writing, any Season 2 plot details are yet to be announced . Although, screenwriters Harry and Jack Williams are returning to pen the new series.

Harry and Jack disclosed that they were hoping to create further episodes of The Tourist following the show’s successful first run. “We are talking about how we could return to this world, aren't we?” Jack said previously, while Harry added, “Yeah, this world and this tone ... I feel like we're not done with that.”

As per the show’s synopsis, The Tourist Season 1 saw Jamie Dornan star as “The Man”, finding himself getting chased in the middle of the Australian outback by a tank truck, which tries to drive him off the road. A pursuit ensues, and The Man wakes up in hospital, hurt – but alive. However, he no longer has any clue who he is (fans of The Fall know Dornan is particularly good at acting this theme out). As he searches for answers, he explores deeper into the vast, and unforgiving terrain of the wild Australian outback.

tourist 2 release date

The synopsis added: “At its heart, however, it’s a story of self-discovery with a ticking time-bomb underneath: as The Man starts to uncover the mystery of who he was, he’s also forced to ask who he is now – and fast. Will he unlock the secrets of his identity before those who are trying to kill him catch up with him?”

The Tourist Season 2 Cast

Details surrounding The Tourist Season 2 cast have yet to be confirmed. Although, speaking to Entertainment Weekly in March 2022, lead star Dornan revealed that he would “love” to reprise his character in the BBC series, adding that “conversations” about his potential return were underway.

Alongside Dornan, The Tourist Season 1 also starred Australian actress Danielle Macdonald, known for her role as the lead character in the 2017 film Patti Cake$, and Line of Duty’s Shalom Brune-Franklin . Additionally, it also starred Icelandic-American actor Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, The Cry ’s Alex Dimitriades, and Damon Herriman, who played Charles Manson in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time in Hollywood and in Mindhunter.

The Tourist Season 2 Release Date

Just like the show’s plot and cast details, a release date for The Tourist Season 2 has not yet been announced by the BBC. Although, if the schedule mirrors that of Season 1, viewers could expect to see the new series arrive in early 2023. But, for now, at least, we’ll just have to wait and see.

News of the show’s return renewal should come as little surprise, as The Tourist quickly became a major hit with viewers .

“In its first 30 days, 12 million people watched The Tourist — that’s twice as big as the largest show, Stay Close , on Netflix,” the BBC's Chief Content Office, Charlotte Moore, told Radio Times . “The power that the BBC has to reach millions of people is far greater than we perhaps realise,” she added.

The Tourist Season 1 is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
