KA’UPULEHU-KONA, Hawaii, and PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. – After putting together one of the greatest individual seasons in PGA TOUR Champions history, Steve Stricker was named the recipient of the 2023 Jack Nicklaus Award as the Champions Tour’s Player of the Year at Tuesday night’s PGA TOUR Champions Annual Awards Dinner, held at Hualalai Golf Course in Hawaii. The 56-year-old Stricker also received the Arnold Palmer Award (season money leader) and Byron Nelson Award (season scoring average), setting PGA TOUR Champions records in both categories.

“What a privilege and what an honor to have won these special awards,” said Stricker. “I’m thankful that we have the opportunity to compete against one another. A lot of us go back years and years ago where we first started playing golf. The passion that we all have, to play against the best at our age, is still really special for all of us. I’ve enjoyed the competition and enjoyed being with you guys and I look forward to another great year.”

Stricker capped his historic 2023 season by winning his first Charles Schwab Cup, sitting atop the standings for 25 of the 28 weeks during the season. He became the third player in the 22-season history of the Charles Schwab Cup to lead the standings for at least 25 weeks during a year, joining Bernhard Langer (2014) and Hale Irwin (2002).

Stricker won six times in 16 starts and added five runner-up finishes for a total of 11 top-two finishes (68.7% of his starts). Stricker’s six victories are the most by any player in a season since 2017 when Langer won seven times. In all, Stricker notched top-10s in 15 of his 16 starts in 2023.

Stricker matched the PGA TOUR Champions record for major victories in a season, winning three of them, and finished runner-up in his other major start of 2023. He joined World Golf Hall of Fame members Gary Player (1988), Jack Nicklaus (1991) and Langer (2017) as the only players to win three majors in a season on PGA TOUR Champions. Stricker captured the Regions Tradition, KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship and Kaulig Companies Championship, while finishing second at the U.S. Senior Open.

Stricker’s other three victories came at the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai, American Family Insurance Championship and Sanford International. At the season-opening event at Hualalai, Stricker recorded the low 18-hole score (60) and low 54-hole score (193) of the season by any player on PGA TOUR Champions.

In earning the Arnold Palmer Award, Stricker set the single-season record for money earned on PGA TOUR Champions, collecting $3,986,063 in 2023. He bettered the previous mark of $3,677,359, which was set by Langer in 2017.

In earning the Byron Nelson Award, Stricker set the single-season record for lowest stroke average with a mark of 67.54. He bettered the previous record of 67.96, set by Fred Couples in 2010.

“I’d like to congratulate Steve on a record-breaking season on PGA TOUR Champions in 2023, which resulted in his sweep of our annual awards, including being named Player of the Year," said PGA TOUR Champions President Miller Brady. "Steve's 2023 season stands as one of the best in the history of our Tour, with him establishing new single-season records for prize money earned and scoring average. These trophies only add to his already decorated career and we look forward to watching him continue that success in 2024.”

Stricker won the player vote over four other candidates for Player of the Year: Stephen Ames, who won four times in 2023 and finished sixth in the Charles Schwab Cup standings; David Toms, who won twice and finished seventh in the Charles Schwab Cup standings; Bernhard Langer, who won twice, including his record-setting 46th win on PGA TOUR Champions, and finished fifth in the Charles Schwab Cup standings; and Steven Alker, who won twice and finished second in the Charles Schwab Cup standings.

5 things you need to know ahead of the PGA Tour Champions’ Charles Schwab Cup finale

1244496295

Padraig Harrington shakes hands with Steven Alker on the 18th green during the TimberTech Championship last week in Florida. The two men are the only players who can capture the season-long Charles Schwab Cup trophy.

The PGA Tour Champions takes center stage this week as it looks to crown two champions—the winner of the Charles Schwab Cup Championship and the season-long winner of the Charles Schwab Cup.

The 72-hole Charles Schwab Cup Championship is back at Phoenix Country Club (Nov. 10-13) this year, where 33 players are in the field. Although it’s possible for the winner of the event to also win the season-long title, this is not set up like the PGA Tour’s FedEx Cup where the winner takes all. Points are distributed throughout the year and then have a heavier weight during the three playoffs events.

Here are five things you need to know ahead of the festivities:

Only two men have a chance to win the season-long points

The top six on Charles Schwab Cup points are a who’s who in senior golf but only Steven Alker and Padraig Harrington have a chance to take home the top prize and the $1 million bonus.

And really, Harrington has to win the tournament in order to have any chance of surpassing Alker, who holds a 617,980-point lead in the standings. If Alker finishes outside the top five then Harrington will win with a tournament victory. There are various other scenarios based on the number of ties ahead, but that’s the general idea of what needs to happen for Harrington to have a chance.

Jerry Kelly, Steve Stricker, Bernhard Langer and Miguel Angel Jimenez are Nos. 3-6 on the points list but there aren’t enough points available by winning the event that could have them catch Alker.

A breakdown of Alker and Harrington

Alker, a 51-year-old from New Zealand, Monday qualified last year to get into his first Champions event and then rattled off six consecutive top-10 finishes to solidify his status. He’s now won five total senior events, including four this season —Rapiscan Systems Classic, Insperity Invitational, KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship and the Dominion Energy Charity Classic.

His consistency has been simply amazing. He’s played in 22 events and aside from the four victories has 17 top-10 finishes and 20 top-25 finishes. Yes, he’s only finished outside the top 25 twice all year.

Harrington has played four less events than Alker, which undoubtedly has kept him from being closer in the Schwab Cup standings. The 51-year-old Irishman has three victories , 12 top-10s and has finished inside the top 25 in 17 of 18 events. He won the U.S. Senior Open, Dick’s Sporting Good Open and the Ascension Charity Classic.

Kelly won three times this year but was not as consistent overall. Stricker won four times but only played in 12 events because he battled illness early in the season.

Bernhard Langer holds the Charles Schwab Cup and Phil Mickelson holds the tournament trophy on the 18th green after the final round of the 2021 PGA Tour Champions Charles Schwab Cup Championship at Phoenix Country Club.

Who won last year?

With so much noise surrounding Phil Mickelson and his LIV Golf exploits this year, it’s easy to forget that he actually won the overall tournament by making three late birdies to shoot a final-round 65 to clip Alker by one shot. Mickelson obviously was not eligible to play in any PGA Tour-sanctioned events once he made the jump to the LIV series, meaning, of course, that he was not allowed to defend his title this week in the desert.

Langer did not play particularly well that week last year and finished in 17th-place but it was enough for him to capture his record sixth overall Schwab Cup season title.

Speaking of Langer

The 65-year-old machine continues to roll, winning the TimberTech Championship last week in Boca Raton, Fla., for his second victory of the year and his 44th overall on the PGA Tour Champions.

He is now only one victory away from tying Hale Irwin’s 45 total senior titles.

Langer has been playing on the tour since 2007 and notched at least one victory in each of his 15 seasons. He’s captured five tournaments or more in a year on three occasions , with a high of seven in 2017. He won 42 times on the European Tour (second all-time), with three PGA Tour victories, including two Masters.

RELATED: Bernhard Langer’s incredible Champions career by the numbers

This year he won’t win the overall Schwab Cup title, but he can certainly tie Irwin’s record with a tournament victory and add a third victory to his season total.

Anything else?

We mentioned the bonus structure earlier and it’s not nearly as deep or as lucrative as the PGA Tour but a nice parting gift awaits those finishing inside the top five on the final Schwab Cup points list.

The winner will take home a cool $1 million, second place will earn $500,000, third place will collect $300,000, fourth will receive $200,000 and fifth place will earn $100,000.

PHOENIX — Steven Alker tore up the first nine holes at Phoenix Country Club during the first three rounds of the 2023 Charles Schwab Cup Championship. He was 14 under on the front over 54 holes, compared to 3 under on the back. That was a big reason why at 17 under, he held a four-shot lead heading into the final round.

Sunday, though, was a different story. Alker, who birdied Nos. 1, 4 and 5 in each of the first three rounds, parred the first and fourth and bogeyed the fifth in the final round. He was even through eight holes before finally getting a second Sunday birdie on the ninth to make the turn at 1 under on the day, and that allowed a few others to make up ground.

Ernie Els, who opened his week with a 63, the low round of the tournament this year, was 5 under through eight holes Sunday and at one point trimmed Alker’s lead to just a shot.

Els’ round then cooled off as he parred eight straight holes but on 17, Els got to 17 under with a long birdie putt, and was once again a shot back of the lead. But on the par-5 18th, Els found trouble, hitting into the greenside lake after bouncing his second shot off the slope near the green. He would go on to make par to shoot 65 and finish 17 under. Stephen Ames also shot a 65 and tied Els at 17 under.

Photos : See the action from Phoenix Country Club

That left Alker needing just to par out on the last three holes to clinch the tournament. On 16, he powered his birdie putt three feet past the hole but he made his par, his lead still one. On 17, he missed the green with a wedge but putted onto the green and then tapped in for a par. On 18, his drive skirted but missed a fairway bunker. He was 201 yards out and chose to lay up. As he was lining up his third, Lanny Wadkins on the Golf Channel telecast said Alker needed to be short and left with his approach but he just about flew green, his ball trundling down the backside into the second cut of rough.

Needing to get up and down for par to win by a shot, Alker, who was 13 for 16 scrambling up to that point this week, chipped on to about two feet. With Ernies Els on the practice green and Stephen Ames sitting in the clubhouse waiting, Alker drained the putt to finish it off.

“It’s another win, that’s the first thing and that’s huge,” he said. “To beat these guys, it’s hard to win out here. To get another one, stuck on six for a while, but to get another one is great. It means a lot obviously with family and friends here.”

The day Steven Alker offered me the job, was the best day of my professional life. Today was a close second. I’m so fortunate to be a part of this team. Sam will always be with us out there every step of the way. Congratulations Steve! #SamWorkman #TeamAlker @SchwabCupFinale … https://t.co/oWcbcGFJr1 — Troy Martin (@TroyMartinGolf) November 13, 2023

Alker won the season-long title a year ago and he now leaves Phoenix Country Club two years in a row with some hardware in his adopted home state. The New Zealander has lived in Scottsdale for the last 21 years.

He also choked up a bit when he spoke of his former caddie Sam Workman, who died in February.

“Troy [Martin], after Sam passed, he’s been a stud, he’s been a stud. I’m glad I got a flag for him today, it was huge.

“You see the signs around and people talking Go Sam and Go Astros,” Alker said of Workman’s favorite baseball team. “We heard a lot of that this week. Yeah, he was here somewhere.”

As for Els, he spoke of his putting, which faltered a little after Thursday.

“The first day I putted so beautifully and then I missed a couple and it put a little doubt in me, to be honest, for the rest of the week,” he said. “I kind of fought it well. When you’re a little unsure, you’re unsure about the line and I was kind of hoping for that putt [on 9] to turn left which it didn’t. That slowed me down, slowed the momentum down. I can look back at those.”

As Alker, who earned $528,000 for the win , collected his tournament trophy on the 18th green, there was another one there for Steve Stricker, who clinched the series title after the first of three playoff events. He was an 11th-hour WD for Phoenix, pulling out the night before the first round after announcing that his dad was admitted into the hospital.

Bonus money

The top five finishers in the Charles Schwab Cup season-long race earned even more money Sunday.

  • Steve Stricker, $1 million
  • Steven Alker, $500,000
  • Ernie Els, $300,000
  • Padraig Harrington, $200,000
  • Bernhard Langer, $100,000

Steve Stricker, PGA Tour, Kaulig Companies Championship

He did it with ease.

For the first time in his career, Steve Stricker will win the Charles Schwab Cup, the season-long award on the PGA Tour Champions , similar to the FedEx Cup on the PGA Tour .

The Wisconsinite unbelievably locked up the title with two weeks to go, thanks to his nearly 2 million point lead over Steven Alker in the Charles Schwab Cup standings. With only 1,756,000 points up for grabs over the final two events, Stricker will take the week off and rest up for the Charles Schwab Cup Championship in Phoenix, scheduled for Nov. 9-12.

Stricker, who captained the victorious 2021 U.S. Ryder Cup team, won six events on the PGA Tour Champions throughout 2023, earning close to $4 million in winnings already—a record on the circuit for players 50 and older.

By taking home the Charles Schwab Cup, he will receive another $440,000.

Steve Stricker, PGA Tour Champions, Constellation FURYK & FRIENDS presented by Circle K

“This has been a goal of mine,” Stricker said recently of the Charles Schwab Cup, per Golf Digest. “I’ve wanted to win this, and I’ve put every effort into trying to play well.”

Not only did Stricker win six events, but of the 16 tournaments he played this season on the PGA Tour Champions, he finished outside the top-10 just once. That came at the Constellation Furyk & Friends—Stricker’s most recent appearance—where he tied for 15th.

Stricker also won three major championships in 2023, something he unfortunately did not accomplish during his 28 seasons on the PGA Tour.

He won the Regions Tradition in Alabama in May, carding a 7-under 65 during the final round to win the tournament by seven strokes over Ernie Els.

Steve Stricker, PGA Tour Champions, KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship

Then, two weeks later, Stricker defeated Padraig Harrington in a thrilling playoff to capture the KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship at Ranch Fields East in Frisco, Texas.

His subsequent victory came in his home state, the American Family Insurance Championship. Then he won the Kaulig Companies Championship at Firestone Country Club in Akron, Ohio, in July—another senior major.

Tiger Woods , Stricker’s close friend, famously won at Firestone a record eight times. But Stricker’s three-shot win this year at Firestone marked his second victory on the Northeast Ohio layout. It was also his seventh senior major title.

He won the Bridgestone Senior Players Championship—now the Kalug Companies Championship for sponsorship reasons—once before, in 2021.

Highlight: charles schwab cup championship round 2.

Finally, another postseason for David Duval: Closing birdie putt seals a spot in Schwab Cup

Duval began the week outside the top-72 that would advance to the schwab cup playoffs, then tied for 11th to jump seven spots.

pga tour champions charles schwab cup

David Duval is finally back in a post-season playoff in golf.

The Jacksonville native birdied the final hole last week at the SAS Championship in Cary, N.C., on a 5-foot putt to finish in a tie for 11th and move from 78th on the PGA Tour Champions Charles Schwab Cup money list to 71st with $171,001, inside the top-72 that advanced to this week's Dominion Energy Charity Classic in Richmond, Va., the first leg of the three-tournament Schwab Cup playoffs.

Duval shot 8-under 208 at the Prestonwood Country Club, seven shots behind winner Rod Pampling. He birdied three of his last six holes and shot 71 in the final round, after rounds of 68-69.

"With the way the year has gone, I haven't gotten to play as much as I wanted to," Duval said after the round. "So, I shouldn't be in that position [needing a birdie on the final hole to qualify]. All the work is starting to pay off. I'm starting to see some results, starting to see the golf ball do what I want it to do. That's what I do it for, controlling the golf ball and I feel like I'm in control of it again."

It's only the second time Duval has qualified for post-season golf. He reached the PGA Tour's FedEx Cup playoffs only once, in 2010 when he finished 117th on the points list. He won his 13 PGA Tour titles, including the 1999 Players Championship and the 2001 Open Championship, between 1997-2001. The FedEx Cup didn't start until 2007.

Duval will have some work to do at each step. The top-54 on the money list after this week will head to Boca Raton for the TimberTech Championship Nov. 3-5 and the top-36 following that will play in the Schwab Cup Championship in Phoenix Nov. 9-12. Duval is $160,835 behind Woody Austin, who is 54th entering this week, meaning he likely would have to finish among the top-five to have a chance of advancing.

Two other local players are in the field in Richmond this week, Vijay Singh of Ponte Vedra Beach (12th on the money list) and Jim Furyk of Jacksonville (72nd).

Andy Bean and the gator

Andy Bean told people he didn’t really wrestle an alligator.

But that’s what the legend held over the years about the 6-foot-4, gentle giant and 11-time PGA Tour winner, who passed away on Oct. 14 of complications due to double lung replacement surgery.

Bean, who was 70, was a native of Georgia and moved to Lakeland when he was 15 years old, where he lived the rest of his life. He played golf at the University of Florida with a legendary lineup that included a pair of PGA Tour winners, Jacksonville native Woody Blackburn and Gary Koch, as well as 1976 U.S. Amateur champion and current Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley.

Bean missed winning two majors by one shot, to Tom Watson at Royal Birkdale in the 1983 British Open and to Payne Stewart in the 1989 PGA Championship at Kemper Lakes.

Now, about that gator.

The narrative was that Bean wrestled a gator at a Q-school site in Central Florida and threw it into a pond.

But he said he merely swatted it on the tail as he passed by the bank of a water hazard, causing the reptile to scurry into the water.

“I walked over to the gator, who was more scared of me than I was of him,” Bean said during an interview at the Tour’s stop in Doral in 1977. “I grabbed his tail and he jumped back into the pond. That’s all there was to it."

Steph Curry honored by golf Hall of Fame

Golden State Warriors star Steph Curry is the recipient of the World Golf Hall of Fame’s Charlie Sifford Award, presented each year to those who advance diversity in golf.

The Sifford Award is named for the Hall of Fame member who was the first African-American to play full-time on the PGA Tour and the first to be inducted into the Hall of Fame. The award was created in 2021.

Curry will be recognized during the 2024 World Golf Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony in Pinehurst, N.C., on June 10, three days before the first round of the U.S. Open at Pinehurst.

Curry, the all-time NBA leader in three-point shots made, is an avid golfer who has played on sponsor invitations in Korn Ferry Tour events.

He launched Underrated Golf in 2021, which seeks to provide equity, access, and opportunity to student-athletes from every community by balancing participation in the sport to truly reflect our society. In 2019 he funded the Howard University golf team for six years.

Korn Ferry schedule released

The PGA Tour unveiled a 2024 Korn Ferry Tour schedule that makes stops in six countries and 17 states.

There will be 26 events, with the first six taking place outside the U.S. The season begins Jan. 14-17 with the Bahamas Great Exuma Classic, with another event in the Bahamas a week later, then stops in Panama, Colombia, Argentina and Chile.

The Visa Argentina Open is a 117-year-old event but will be a co-sanctioned Korn Ferry Tour tournament for the first time. The winner also will earn a spot in the British Open.

The first U.S. tournament is only 90 minutes from the First Coast: the Club Car Championship at The Landings Golf & Athletic Club in Savannah, Ga., April 4-7, with Golf Channel airing portions of all four rounds.

The four-event Korn Ferry Tour Finals will be in Boise, Idaho, Nashville, Columbus, Ohio, and French Lick, Ind. The top-30 on the Korn Ferry points list will earn PGA Tour cards for the 2025 season. The No. 1 player on the list will be exempt to the 2025 Players Championship and U.S. Open.

Miguel Jimenez, Jerry Kelly picked

Miguel Angel Jimenez, Jerry Kelly and Steven Alker were announced as the first round of chairman's picks for the World Champions Cup Dec. 7-10 at The Concession in Bradenton.

The three-team match play event will pit the U.S., Europe and an International team. Furyk is the U.S. captain, Darren Clarke the European captain and Ernie Els the International captain.

Tournament chairman Peter Jacobsen will make one more selection for each team. The final players on the six-man teams will be drawn from the Schwab Cup points list.

Already on the U.S. team are Steve Stricker and David Toms. Vijay Singh of Ponte Vedra Beach and Retief Goosen are on the International team and Bernhard Langer and Colin Montgomerie are on the European team. The captains will also play.

Steven Alker, Stephen Ames lead latest commitments to Galleri Classic

pga tour champions charles schwab cup

Steven Alker, who dominated the PGA Tour Champions in 2022 with eight wins and added two more titles in 2023, is among the latest golfers to commit to the Galleri Classic in Rancho Mirage from March 27-31.

Stephen Ames, Jerry Kelly and Alex Cejka, with a combined 21 PGA Tour Champions victories, will also join the field of the second annual event on the Dinah Shore Tournament Course at Mission Hills Country Club.

The Galleri Classic, named after title sponsor Grail’s multi-cancer early detection test, will feature 78 PGA Tour Champions professionals playing 54 holes for a $2.2 million purse.

In the first two events of the 2024 season on PGA TOUR Champions, Alker won the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at Hualalai and Ames was victorious at the Chubb Classic.

Alker, Ames, Kelly and Cejka join 2023 PGA Tour Champions Player of the Year Steve Stricker, 2023 Galleri Classic champion David Toms, World Golf Hall of Famers Fred Couples and Ernie Els and two-time major champion John Daly as tournament entrants in the 2024 field. Stricker will serve as an ambassador for Galleri in 2024, helping to raise awareness of multi-cancer early detection.

More: Steve Stricker commits to PGA Tour Champions' Galleri Classic; will serve as 2024 Grail ambassador

“The additions of Steven Alker, Stephen Ames, Jerry Kelly and Alex Cejka have significantly strengthened the 2024 Galleri Classic field as we are now set to host seven of the top nine golfers in the 2023 Charles Schwab Cup standings,” said Michelle DeLancy, tournament director of The Galleri Classic. “Steven Alker and Stephen Ames are already off to great starts in 2024, and Jerry and Alex have won multiple majors in the past few years. The Galleri Classic is lining up to once again display a major championship-worthy vibe at Mission Hills.”

Alker won two times in 2023 in out-earning everyone except Stricker in the Charles Schwab Cup race. Alker was runner up in the 2023 Galleri behind champion Toms.

A four-time PGA Tour winner, highlighted by his 2006 Players Championship victory, Ames won four of his seven PGA Tour Champions titles last year. Three of those victories came in his first 10 starts.

Kelly achieved 11 PGA Tour Champions titles in his first five seasons (2017-2022) on the circuit. Two of those titles were major championship victories at the 2020 Bridgestone Senior Players Championship and the 2022 Kaulig Companies Championship.

Cejka burst onto the PGA Tour Champions scene in 2021, winning major championships at the Regions Tradition and KitchenAid Senior PGA Championship. He earned a third major at last year’s Senior British Open Championship presented by Rolex, outlasting Padraig Harrington in a three-hole playoff at Royal Portrush.

Toms led the 2023 Galleri Classic wire to wire and made birdies on six of his last 10 holes on the way to a winning score of 16-under-par 200. It was the most recent of Toms’ four PGA Tour Champions titles.

All Galleri Classic ticket options are available online at www.TheGalleriClassic.com. Ticket offerings (March 27-31) include daily and weekly grounds tickets for $30 and $65, respectively, and clubhouse tickets (good only March 29-31) for $75 per day or $150 for all three competition rounds.

The Galleri Classic will continue its partnership with six cancer-related, non-profit organizations based in the Coachella Valley – American Cancer Society/Palm Desert, The Desert Cancer Foundation, Eisenhower Health, Hanson House, Pendleton Foundation and Shay’s Warriors Life After Cancer – and will direct a portion of its proceeds from the event to fund these local charities.
