If your loved ones are planning a trip to the UAE, here's a reminder: Tourists can apply for a family group visit visa, which is free of cost for children.

Under the scheme, children under the age of 18 can be granted a visa for free while usual charges apply to their parents.

“The application for this visa should be submitted along with either father’s or mother’s application,” said Subair Thekepurathvalappil, senior manager for inbound and outbound operations at Regal Tours Worldwide.

Industry experts said several visitors had been opting for this entry permit.

“A family group visit visa is more convenient and cost-effective for families, given that there is no visa fee for children under the age of 18,” Subair said, adding that there are no restrictions on the number of children who can apply for the permit.

The free visa is also applicable even to children who are travelling with just one parent, he explained. It is available for a 30- or 60-day stay, which can be extended within the country.

With the festive season just around the corner, several family group visit visas are being issued every day — particularly to Indians who wish to celebrate Diwali in Dubai, said Firoz Maliyakkal, founder and CEO of Tahira Tours and Travels.

This visa, however, is not new. It was introduced two years ago and has since been a popular option for visitors from around the world.

How to apply

  • A family will have to submit copies of their passports and photos — all at once — to a travel agency.
  • Fees are paid. Note that though the visa is free for children, travel agent service charges and insurance fees will apply.
  • The agency then processes the application.
  • The visa is usually issued in a day or two.
  • Visa fee for parents, along with the service charge for children, may vary depending on the travel agency.
  • A 30-day visa for a parent ranges from Dh350 to Dh500.
  • Service charge and insurance for a child range between Dh80 and Dh120.
  • A 60-day visa will cost Dh500 to Dh650, while the service charge, including insurance, may vary from Dh130 to Dh170.

Requirements

  • Passport copy
  • Passport-sized photograph

Extension policy

Experts say the family visa can be extended without exiting the country, “however, a full visa fee has to be paid for children. The extension within the country is not free for children", said Subair.

“Visitors can extend the family visa for up to 120 days without exiting the country,” he added.

In the UAE, residents with certain visas can sponsor family members to live in the country without a job.

If you are unemployed or a student under the age of 18, you need to be sponsored by a family member to remain in the Emirates year-round .

In October 2022, changes to the law meant that residents can now bring their parents and their spouse's parents without having to show they are the only source of support.

However, a minimum monthly salary is still required.

Here is everything you need to know about sponsoring family members.

What monthly income is required to sponsor parents or underage siblings?

To sponsor parents or underage siblings, the minimum salary threshold required is higher than for a wife or child.

Residents can sponsor up to five family members if they earn a minimum monthly salary of Dh10,000.

This increases to six family members if they earn at least Dh15,000 a month.

For more than six family members, dispensation is required.

The fee for sponsoring parents is Dh1,750, plus a refundable Dh5,000 deposit.

“Setting a minimum salary as a condition for expatriates wishing to sponsor family members is only to ensure they will be properly provided for,” said Nida Al Masri, a legal consultant at Justitia Advocates and Legal Consultants in Dubai.

“The terms and conditions are important to regulate this procedure, which reflects the UAE's commitment to supporting its expatriate community and creating a more inclusive society.”

Which accommodation is required to sponsor parents?

The law requires that sponsors are already in suitable accommodation before they apply for the family visa.

This is classified as at least a two-bedroom house or flat, before they apply for the family visa.

They must also present supporting documents that prove family ties at residency centres.

What documents do you need to sponsor parents?

The following documents should also be submitted:

  • Passport-size photograph of the family member
  • Copy of the family member's valid passport
  • Copy of the resident's Emirates ID, passport and residency page.
  • Proof of residence, such as a lease contract
  • Labour contract
  • Three months of bank statements for the resident

Can a woman sponsor her family?

In Abu Dhabi, a woman can sponsor her husband and children if the request is approved by the authorities, according to a customer service agent of the Federal Authority For Identity and Citizenship – ICA .

“She should have a valid work visa and her monthly salary should be at least Dh5,000. The cost of the one-year visa is Dh2,575 and it can be renewed for one more year,” said the executive.

In Dubai, a woman can sponsor her family, but her monthly salary should be at least Dh4,000 and her request must be approved by the GDRFA, the immigration authority.

“A wife can sponsor the family, but she has to obtain an no objection certificate from the husband. The NOC has to be notarised by the Dubai court notary service,” an Amer customer service representative said.

A single mother can also sponsor her child.

What does it cost to sponsor a spouse or child?

A husband can sponsor his immediate family members, such as his wife and children, if they have a minimum salary of Dh4,000 or Dh3,000 plus accommodation.

If these conditions are met, the husband must open a registration file.

This costs between Dh200 to Dh300 if they are outside the UAE, rising to up to four times as much if they are in the country, due to the price of the entry permit and the charge for change of status, according to the Amer Centre for visa services.

The medical test, Emirates ID typing and visa stamping will come to around Dh1,000 altogether. All costs are per person and there is no security deposit needed. Medical tests are not needed for children under 18.

Parents can sponsor sons who are 18 and can continue to do so until they are 25 . Unmarried daughters and disabled children are granted a residency permit regardless of their age.

The documents and the visa costs are the same and it is valid for two years.

90-day visit visa for family members

UAE residents can apply for 90-day entry permits for family members, rather than a 60-day visa, before sponsorship is finalised.

“The resident should have a refundable deposit of Dh1,000 to issue a visit visa for the family members,” the Amer Centre representative said.

The fee for an entry permit is Dh1,020 and the following documents should be submitted:

  • copy of the family member's valid passport
  • copy of the resident's Emirates ID
  • proof of residence, such as a lease contract or hotel reservation
  • copy of a return ticket

Visas can also be applied for online at the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security website, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs website, or on the department's app.

How to sponsor your family in the UAE – A complete guide

  • Family Visa Requirements
  • Eligibility Criteria
  • Required Documents
  • Validity and Renewal

The UAE population, especially its workforce, mainly consists of expatriates. The latest visa regulations simplify the UAE family sponsorship process, provided sponsors fall under a specified income bracket. This handy guide on sponsoring family members in the UAE can help you understand the rules and procedures for obtaining residency for your dependents. So, let’s take a look.

Please note that immigration rules in the UAE are subject to change. We will update our article if and when new laws are introduced, or any announcements are made. Also, note that we’ve only provided an overview of the process; you can visit Amer or GDRFA’s official website(s) for specific information about UAE sponsor visa .

UAE FAMILY VISA – AN OVERVIEW

In 2022, the UAE government announced major changes to its visa policy. Among the changes announced were amendments to the family sponsorship policy for expatriates in the UAE. After changes in rules for a family visa in the UAE, the government announced that residents could sponsor their sons up to 25 years of age.

UAE FAMILY VISA RULES

The family visa UAE rules state that the educational background or profession will not be a condition based on which family visas will be handed out.

Instead, the income of the residents looking to sponsor their family visas will be considered. So, regardless of your job designation, you can sponsor family members if you have the financial means and a valid visa. However, before taking the plunge, check your UAE visa status to know whether you can sponsor your loved ones.

Before the UAE family sponsorship policy amendment of 2019, only individuals from certain professions could sponsor family members. Since 2019, any male residents employed in the UAE can sponsor their immediate family members, such as their wives and children, with a minimum salary of AED 4,000 or AED 3,000 plus accommodation.

The conditions are slightly different for female residents in Abu Dhabi looking to sponsor their families. A woman should have a valid work visa, and her monthly salary should be at least AED 5,000.

In Dubai, a woman’s salary should be at least AED 4,000 to sponsor her family. She is also required to get her request approved by the GDFRA.

RESIDENCY VISA RULES FOR CHILDREN SPONSORED BY PARENTS

After amendments to family visa Dubai rules in 2022, expats can sponsor male children up to the age of 25. The UAE family visa rules remained unchanged for daughters. There is no age limit on how long parents can sponsor their daughters – they can be sponsored until they get married.

A bonus for this type of visa is that parents will not have to make bank deposits of AED 5,000. The new family visa UAE price will be AED 100 for first-time issuance and renewal.

Children with disabilities will be granted a residence permit permanently, irrespective of their age. Moreover, Green visa residence holders can sponsor any first-degree relatives. The residency of family members will be for the same period as the sponsor residence holder.

The visa for family in UAE regulations have been well received since they were amended and announced in 2022. The new rules continue to contribute to the stability of the UAE’s economy while building a cohesive environment for individuals to start a family in the UAE.

Both, employers and employees with valid UAE residence visas can sponsor residence visas for their families. Unlike before, employees can sponsor their families regardless of their job titles if they earn a minimum salary of AED 4,000 or AED 3,000 plus accommodation. Clearing medical fitness examination applies to all newcomers who have completed the age of 18.

Sponsorship requirements

Sponsoring your wife and children, sponsoring your parents, residence visa for a uae citizen spouse parent and child.

Expatriate residents can sponsor  their families to reside in the UAE if they have a valid residence permit/visa.

The sponsor must have a minimum salary of AED 4,000 or AED 3,000 plus accommodation.

Male and female family members who are to be sponsored and who have completed the age of 18 need to undergo and pass medical fitness tests at approved health centres  (PDF, 1 MB) in the UAE.

  • A mother can sponsor her children in special cases approved by the ICP.
  • A resident sponsor has 60 days to apply for his dependents’ residence visa after they enter the UAE under an entry permit.
  • A resident can sponsor his parents, and the residence visa will be granted on a yearly basis regardless of the duration of the sponsor’s visa.
  • The  type of profession is no longer a condition  for an expatriate worker to be able to sponsor his family visas.
  • Medically unfit people will not be granted a residence visa.
  • Residents who are detected with dormant or inactive pulmonary tuberculosis are also considered medically fit and are granted a one-year ‘Health Fitness Certificate for Residence’ subject to treatment and follow-up by the respective health authority.

The conditions are subject to change from time to time. Kindly check with Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICP) or GDRFA .

To sponsor the wife, the expatriate resident must prove an existing marital relationship by submitting an attested marriage certificate in Arabic or duly translated into Arabic by a certified translator.

Sponsoring two wives

In strict cases, a Muslim resident may be allowed to sponsor his two wives, if he meets certain terms and conditions set by ICP.

Sponsoring daughters

An expatriate resident can sponsor his daughter/s only if she/they is/are unmarried, with no restrictions with regard to her/their age/s.

Sponsoring sons

A male or female resident can sponsor his/her son/s until he is 25. Sons of determination (those with special needs) can be sponsored with no restrictions with regard to his/ their age/s.

For babies born in the UAE, a residence visa must be applied for, within 120 days of its birth to avoid getting fines.

An expatriate resident can sponsor his stepchildren, subject to GDRFA’s conditions which include a deposit for each child and a written no-objection certificate from the biological parent. Their residence visas are valid for one year; renewable annually.

  • medical clearance certificate of the wife and children above 18 years
  • copy of the husband's employment contract or company contract
  • salary certificate from the employer stating the husband’s monthly salary
  • attested marriage certificate
  • registered tenancy contract.

Cancellation

The family's residence permits are linked to the residence permit of the sponsoring family member . If the sponsoring family member's visa is cancelled, it requires cancellation of the visas of the dependents.

Dependents are granted a 6-month grace period from the date of expiry or cancellation of their visas to obtain a new residence permit. If the sponsor fails to renew or cancel the visa of his dependents, he could be liable to pay a fine.

An expatriate employee can sponsor his parents for a year's stay by paying a deposit as a guarantee for each parent as stipulated by the respective immigration department.

An expatriate employee cannot sponsor only one of his parents. He needs to sponsor both parents together. He also needs to provide proof that he is their sole support and that there is no one to take care of them back home.

If one of the parents has passed away or if the parents are divorced, related official documents would be needed as justification to sponsor only one of the parents.

To sponsor parents, the employed expatriate resident must earn the minimum salary stipulated and obtain a medical insurance policy for parents with the minimum coverage stipulated for each, to be renewed each year.

According to the Amer website , DNRD in Dubai stipulates a minimum salary of AED 20,000 to sponsor parents’ visa .

A UAE citizen’s spouse, parent or child, who holds a foreign passport, can get a UAE residence visa for 5 years without having to work in the UAE. In this case, the sponsor shall be the UAE citizen.

A foreign widow or divorced woman, who is a mother of a UAE citizen, can get a residence visa without having to work in the UAE. In this case, the sponsor shall be the oldest child.

The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security accepts applications for 90-day single-entry or multiple-entry visit visas from UAE citizens who wish to invite friends or family to visit the nation (ICP).

Residents who have residence visas issued in Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Ras Al Khaimah, Fujairah, or Umm Al Quwain may use this service.

Here are the details.

Where can one apply for the 90-day visit visa?

Three different methods can be used to apply for a visa:

  • Website for ICP Smart Services: smartservices.icp.gov.ae
  • The ICP mobile app, called “UAEICP,” which is compatible with Apple and Android phones and tablets.
  • A typing centre approved by ICP – go to https://icp.gov.ae/en/typing-offices/ to view the list of centres in each Emirate that have been approved.

Documents required

You must provide the following paperwork if you want to apply for a visa on behalf of a friend or member of your family:

  • A recent, coloured, passport-size photo of the friend or relative.
  • Evidence of kinship (marriage or birth certificate), which is necessary if you’re sponsoring a family member’s visit visa.
  • A copy of the friend’s or relative’s current passport.
  • A copy of your Emirates ID.
  • The sponsor’s residency documentation. You might be able to present your rental agreement or the specifics of the hotel reservation for the friend or relative here.
  • A copy of the return ticket

The ICP states that you might be asked to submit additional papers depending on the information you included in the application.

How much does the visa cost?

According to ICP, the total cost of the visa will depend on the specifics of the application, and the sponsor needs to make a security deposit. According to the authorities, the expected cost breakdown is as follows:

  • Security deposit: Dh1,025
  • Request fees: Dh100
  • Issue fees: Dh300
  • E-services fees: Dh28
  • ICP fees: Dh22
  • Smart services fee: Dh100

Total: Dh1,575

How to apply for the visa online

Visit the following website first: https://smartservices.icp.gov.ae/echannels/web/client/default.html#/login to apply for a visit visa through the ICP Smart Services platform.

  • Log in using your UAE Pass or, if you already have one, your ICP online account.
  • After logging in, the programme will take you to your own dashboard.
  • Next, select the Federal Authority for Identification and Citizenship in your Emirate, such as Abu Dhabi or Sharjah.
  • Next, use the search bar to look up “Visit Visa For Friend or Relative 90 Days (Single Entry) – Issuance.” The offering will be displayed below.

Dubai: If you are planning to visit the UAE as one family — parents and their children — there is good news.

The family group visa application allows parents and their children to apply for visas as a group through authorised travel agencies.

The initiative extends exemptions from visa fees to children under 18 years when accompanied by their parents. This offer is exclusively accessible through approved travel agencies within and outside the UAE, a senior official explained.

The option is only available when applying for the tourist visa through travel agencies inside and outside the country, Brigadier General Khalaf Al-Ghaith, Assistant Director General of the Entry and Residence Permits Sector, told Gulf News .

UAE family group visa

The family group visa is available for one-time applications for families traveling together, the official said.

Travel agencies can now apply for short-term tourist visas, with a duration of 30 to 60 days, which can be extended to a maximum of 120 days, if necessary.

Visa extension can be applied for before the visa expires.

Tourist visa type:

Short term tourist visa of 30-60 days – can be extended to 120 days.

This service allows a foreigner residing in one of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries to be granted an entry visa to the country as a visitor for a period not exceeding 30 days, extendable only once.

The service is available 24/7

Requirements:

  • Valid passport or travel document to enter the country.
  • A copy of the residence permit or an electronic extract stating the profession and validity of residence.
  • Personal photo (white background)
  • Log in to the website https://smart.gdrfad.gov.ae
  • Register as a user,
  • Choose the service,
  • Fill in the data,
  • The data must fill correctly (full name),
  • Pay the due fees,
  • After approval, the visa is sent to the user’s email.
  • The residency must be valid for more than 3 months.
  • The passport must be valid for more than six months.
  • If there is missing data, the application will be rejected.

In the past, visitors arriving in the UAE would obtain a yellow paper and apply for a visa, a process that typically took an hour or two to receive approval.

However, in a significant improvement, the UAE government has launched a user-friendly website, allowing travelers to apply for visas electronically.

This innovative approach enables individuals to secure their visas within a matter of minutes, even if they are outside the country.

‘All visa applicants undergo security checks’: Wong

Answering a final question from the media, Penny Wong is asked about reports that Palestinians fleeing war in Gaza have had their visas cancelled mid-flight en route to Australia.

I know this is an incredibly distressing time for Australians with extended family members in Gaza. We have successfully assisted the vast majority of Australian citizens, permanent residents and immediate family members, wanting to leave Gaza. Australian officials have worked very hard to ensure that occurs. As I previously said, all visa applicants undergo security checks and are subject to ongoing security assessments. In terms of some of details you raised, they’re for the portfolio of home affairs. So you need to address your questions to them.

All information ‘we’ve been provided with has been considered’: Wong

Reporter : Was the information that you specifically sought from Israel as part of this investigation provided to you?

Penny Wong :

We received some information, and all information we received obviously has been the subject of consideration in the context of this advice.

Reporter: So Israel has not failed to provide that information that you have requested?

Israel has provided some information …

Reporter: You said some information has been provided, not all information then?

Well, you have to ask them that, wouldn’t you? I mean, I don’t know what I don’t know. I know what I do know. What I do know is this, I know there’s people starving in Gaza. I know the European Union and Canada have determined to unpause. I know that UNRWA is critical to providing this assistance to people who are on the brink of or are starving. I know serious allegations were made and I have responsibilities as Australia’s foreign minister to do what I have done, which is to ensure we get the most considered detailed advice which we have, and we put in place the safeguards which I have outlined.

Taking questions, Penny Wong is asked what specific information the government received from various agencies and government lawyers that led to the decision to reinstate funding?

She said she would not “go into every detail” but said:

There’s been a lot of work done on this. But can I say to you, and you would assume from the time it’s taken us to go through this, that there has been a very careful detailed consideration of information provided to us in the context of our discussions with donors, with the United Nations, with partners, and there has been the subject of detailed discussion and advice from Australian agencies.

UNRWA does ‘live-saving work, and the recent allegations were grave’: Wong

Before taking questions, Wong finished her statement with:

There are two facts a responsible government can’t ignore in relation to UNRWA: They do life-saving work, and the recent allegations were grave. So the decision I am announcing today is the result of the Australian government working together with our partners to rebuild confidence, to establish ongoing diligence about the use of the aid money generously given by the Australian people. Once again, Australia reiterates our call for the immediate and unconditional release of hostages, we reiterate our expectation of humane treatment and humanitarian access for them, and we reiterate our call for an immediate and enduring humanitarian ceasefire.

Australia to help deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza: Wong

Penny Wong is also making two additional announcements:

Australia will support efforts by Jordan and the UAE to assist with the delivery of vital humanitarian aid to civilians in Gaza, Wong said.

A C17a global master RAAF asset will deliver 140 Australian defence force aerial delivery parachutes for use in humanitarian assistance drops by Jordan and the UAE.

Australia will also provide an additional $4m to Unicef to provide urgent services, including for women and children, and $2m to the new mechanism of the UN’s senior humanitarian and reconstruction coordinator for Gaza, to facilitate expanded humanitarian access into Gaza.

These additional measures bring Australia’s total support to Gaza to $52.5m since this crisis began.

Penny Wong said the Australian government has been briefed by the world food program, who said there are large food stocks outside Gaza’s borders but no way to deliver it “without Israel’s co-operation and we implore Israel to allow more aid into Gaza now ”.

Australia reinstates funding for UNRWA

Daniel Hurst

Australia is reinstating funding to a key UN aid agency amid growing concerns about the worsening humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The foreign minister, Penny Wong , announced the decision to unfreeze $6m in emergency funding for UNRWA on Friday, as part of a broader package of support.

Australia was among more than a dozen donor countries to suspend funding to the agency in late January, after the Israeli government alleged that 12 UNRWA staff members were involved in the 7 October Hamas-led attacks on Israel.

Friday’s decision to reinstate funding follows similar moves by Canada and Sweden .

Wong told reporters in Adelaide:

We took a decision to pause $6m of additional funding … after serious allegations were made resulting in UNRWA’s dismissal of staff alleged to have been involved in the Hamas terrorist attacks of 7 October. The nature of these allegations warranted an immediate and appropriate response. The best available current advice from agencies and the Australian government lawyers is that UNRWA is not a terrorist organisation and that existing additional safeguards sufficiently protect Australian taxpayer funding. We have been working with a group of donor countries and UNRWA on the shared objective of ensuring the integrity of UNRWA’s obligations, rebuilding confidence, and ensuring that aid flows to Gazans in desperate need … On that basis, and after consideration by the national security committee this week, Australia is unpausing our contribution to UNRWA.

Four separate lithium-ion battery fires in NSW yesterday

Fire and Rescue NSW has expressed concerns about the rising rate of lithium-ion battery fires after responding to four separate incidents across the state yesterday.

FRNSW has recorded 63 lithium-ion battery fires this year , subject to review, at a rate of 5.7 blazes a week . Seven people have been injured in the fires.

There were 272 lithium-ion battery related fires in 2023, at a rate of 5.2 a week. 38 people were injured last year.

The four incidents FRNSW responded to yesterday include:

An electric vehicle charging station caught alight just after 5pm at Berkeley. Firefighters established a perimeter around a business, fearing multiple batteries were at risk of catching fire, but the blaze was extinguished without further incident.

A tradesman’s toolbox caught alight around 4pm at Lake Macquarie. The worker told fire crews he was driving when he noticed smoke in the rear view mirror, and stopped to find an unattached battery ablaze. He covered it in dirt and drove to a nearby fire station, where it was submerged in water.

About 12.45pm a fire broke out in the rear of a garbage truck travelling along in Silverwater. The driver stopped and tipped the burning rubbish on to the roadway. Crews arrived and found one battery on fire, and submerged it in water.

An e-bike caught fire on the third floor of a 10-storey apartment at Bankstown in Sydney’s south-west. Residents were evacuated and sprinklers activated.
