Pampanga Food Trip 2024: Famous Restaurants and Their Best-sellers

pampanga food trip 2023

Pampanga is known as the Culinary Capital of the Philippines for all the mouthwatering reasons. A Pampanga food trip is all you need to taste the province’s best dishes.

Only a two-hour ride from Metro Manila, go up north and do what every foodie must do: E-A-T.

Restaurants to include on your Pampanga food trip: Where to eat, what to order

Where to eat in Pampanga, you may ask. Below is a list of must-try restaurants and dishes. These are the places where you can get to taste how authentic the meals are. Also included are the best sellers for each restaurant.

1. Everybody’s Café

Best-seller: morcon.

Everybody’s Café is an exotic restaurant. So expect to see betute (fried stuffed frog), kamaru (fried crickets), and tapang kalabaw (cured carabao meat) on the menu. These items sold out fast, so be there as early as possible if you want to try them.

If your palate is not ready, the restaurant also serves Kapampangan comfort food such as mami, sinigang na sugpo, embutido, and tsokolate (chocolate batirol), which take at least three hours to prepare. But morcon, the house specialty, remains to be Everybody’s Café’s best-seller.

pampanga food trip 2023

There is a mini shop inside the restaurant. They sell the most delectable sylvannas in Pampanga.

There are two Everybody’s Café branches; one in  Nepo Mart in Angeles and MacArthur Highway in Del Pilar, San Fernando City. Choose the second one because it is the actual ancestral house that was turned into a restaurant.

2. Aling Lucing’s Sisig

Best-seller: sisig.

Sisig is originally from Pampanga. Aling Lucing’s Sisig claims that it’s the first to offer the delicacy made from pig’s head meat (cheeks and ears) and other parts that were considered scrap then. Today, sisig is known as a ubiquitous beer match and is almost always present in every Filipino drinking session. Luciana Cunanan, or simply Aling Lucing, the Sisig Queen, introduced the dish in the 1970s. Incidentally, Aling Lucing claims to serve the best sisig in Pampanga.

pampanga food trip 2023

The streetside eatery also offers sizzling pusit (squid) on top of the best-seller, sisig. There are many options to choose from a la turo-turo style, including fish, pork, chicken, chicharon bulaklak (ruffled fat crackling), and tokwa’t baboy (fried tofu and steamed pork).

Aling Lucing’s Sisig is located in Glaciano Valdez St., Angeles City.

3. Mila’s Tokwa’t Baboy

Best-sellers: tokwa’t baboy and sizzling sisig.

Another sisig joint in the province that also claims the origin of this indulgent delicacy is Mila’s Tokwa’t Baboy. Their version is on the crispy side, although the same ingredients were used in preparing it. The carinderia began operation in 1989.

pampanga food trip 2023

Its best-seller other than sizzling sisig is tokwa’t baboy served with its special sauce made from soy sauce, celery, and tomatoes. You have never tasted something like this before for sure.

Mila’s Tokwa’t Baboy is a few blocks away from Aling Lucing’s Sisig. It is located in San Andres St.

4. Café Fleur

Best-sellers: crispy shrimp okoy (appetizer) and crispy pork belly, and macadamia kare-kare (main course).

The famous Chef Sau del Rosario is behind the homey Café Fleur. The restaurant serves classic Filipino dishes but with a French twist. Of course, Kapampangan dishes like pako (fern) salad, buro (fermented rice), and fried hito (catfish) are a staple of its menu.

pampanga food trip 2023

Café Fleur is also known for unique dishes such as crispy shrimp okoy (shrimp cake) and crispy pork belly, and macadamia kare-kare (stew in peanut sauce)–its appetizer and main course best-sellers, salted egg bibingka (cassava) cheesecake, lamb caldereta with kesong puti (cheese), and pandan (screwpine) sansrival.

The restaurant is located in Miranda St. Brgy. Sto. Rosario, Angeles City.

5. Historic Camalig

Best-seller: armando’s pizza: ang pambansang pizza.

From its name, Historic Camalig used to be the Nepomuceno family’s house and rice barn. The restaurant offers unique pizza flavors, with which the owners dubbed the “pambansang pizza” (national pizza). Armando’s Pizza: Ang Pambansang Pizza is actually Historic Camalig’s best-seller.

pampanga food trip 2023

Speaking of which, Historic Camalig serves longganisa (sausage) and salted egg-flavored pizzas. Other best-sellers include tinapa (smoked fish), tuyo (dried fish), and chicken adobo pizzas.

Cisan’s, another restaurant in Pampanga that serves Japanese-Thai-Vietnamese dishes, is also owned by the Nepomuceno clan.

Historic Camalig is located a few meters away from Café Fleur. It is specifically located in Camalig Square, Dalan Sto. Rosario, Angeles.

6. The Original Razon’s

Best-sellers: halo-halo and pancit palabok.

pampanga food trip 2023

From its humble beginnings as a refreshment parlor, The Original Razon’s became a household name thanks to its halo-halo and pancit palabok, both of the diner’s best-sellers. The owners even included the tagline “The Halo-Halo & Palabok that Made Guagua Famous.”

Razon’s opened in 1972, serving what we now call the minimalist halo-halo. Their version has only four ingredients. The quaint, family-friendly restaurant also has a mini shop inside selling chicharon (crackling), uraro (arrowroot), bottled sardines, and taba ng talangka (crab fat).

Razon’s is located along the MacArthur Highway in Mabalacat, Pampanga.

7. Apag Marangle

Best-sellers: adobong camaru, sizzling balut, and relyenong betute.

Apag Marangle, like Everybody’s Café, serves exotic dishes. What makes the experience more unique is the menu that resembles a banana leaf and the table set inside connecting nipa huts partially submerged in the water.

pampanga food trip 2023

The menu items are written in Kapampangan but also include the English translation of each. Their best-sellers are adobong camaru (mole crickets in vinegar and soy sauce stew), sizzling balut, and relyenong betute (stuffed frog).

It also offers ningnang (grilled) and pulutan, including tokwa’t liempo (fried tofu and steamed pork belly), sizzling balut, chili garlic camaro, and tugak king bawang ampong lara (chili garlic frog).

The rustic place is huge, with a small pond where the catfish are contained, a play area, a mini zoo with birds and monitor lizards, and a selfie spot. The place is surrounded by greens, so you’ll have a relaxing yet delicious meal.

8. 1956 Downtown Café

Best-sellers: trianggulo, sinigang na lechon, crispy hito and halo-halo.

1956 Downtown Café is owned by another renowned Kapampangan chef, Chef Claude Tayag of the Bale Dutung fame. The restaurant was established to commemorate his birth year.

pampanga food trip 2023

The retro-styled diner serves unique dishes from crispy aromatic spring duck and lechon taco to halo-halo with crema de pastillas. Halo-halo is one of its best-sellers along triangulo (fried samosas filled with tinapa, pili nuts, and spinach), sinigang na lechon (roasted pig in sour stew), and crispy hito (catfish).

Eating here will make you feel nostalgic with all the memorabilia despite being a relatively small diner.

9. Nathaniel’s Bakeshop

Best-seller: buko pandan salad.

When Nathaniel’s opened in 1994, it mostly offered frozen dessert products such as juices, fruit salad, sylvannas, and its best-seller buko pandan salad. The last one sells out so fast the crew has to replenish the stock on the fridge several times daily.

pampanga food trip 2023

Now, the selection widens to include chicharon, bucheron (chicken gizzard crackling), cashew-flavored barquillos (crispy waffles), puto pao (steamed buns), and other local delicacies. A bigger portion of the main branch, where the plant is located at the back, is converted into a restaurant.

No one can mistake Nathaniel’s stores or products because of its mint green branding. The main branch is located in

10. Kusinang Matua ni Atching Lillian

Best-seller: san nicolas cookies.

Lillian Borromeo is famous for her San Nicolas cookies, which is also the Kusina’s best-seller. The kitchen is on the first floor of her house. She hosts cooking demos here. She lives on the second floor. If she’s there, Atching Lillian welcomes an impromptu interview.

pampanga food trip 2023

Her place is like a mini museum with all her family’s artifacts when cooking. There are old ovens, stone mills, wooden mortar and pestle, sewing machines turned into a table, and hundreds of biscuit molds passed from generation to generation.

Kusinang Matua ni Atching Lillian is not actually a full-blown restaurant, but including it in the list is a must too.

Many people, including the late chef Anthony Bourdain, like to pair Aling Lucing Sisig with a few bottles of beer.

Apart from the sisig, the restaurant is also known for other affordable dishes like liempo (pork belly), tokwa’t baboy (fried tofu and pork), and other grilled food. The food is the star of this restaurant, so don’t expect too much when it comes to its interiors, as it is mostly simple. The restaurant has other branches in Pampanga and other parts of the Philippines, but if you want to visit the main restaurant, head to Glaciano Valdez Street in Angeles.

13. Apag Marangle

Apag Marangle floating cottages

Apag Marangle has several branches in Pampanga and outside of the province, and the original restaurant in Bacolor is the place to go to if you’re looking for a floating restaurant in Pampanga. The restaurant also has its own farm where they source some of its ingredients.

Apag Marangle food baskets

In Kapampangan, Apag Marangle literally means to serve food in the field, and with authentic Kapampangan dishes like sisig, betute (stuffed deep-fried frog), and suam na mais (soup with corn, vegetables, and meat) cooked fresh, dining in the restaurant definitely feels like having a meal in a Pampanga farm.

The restaurant also serves other Filipino cuisine staples like tinolang manok (chicken soup dish), relyenong bangus (stuffed milkfish), and pakbet (vegetable dish). They also have vegetarian options like ensaladang mangga (green mango salad) and ensaladang pako (fiddlehead fern salad).

Compared to other restaurants in Pampanga, the ambiance and interiors of Binulo Restaurant, while still traditional and Filipino, is a bit more upscale, and this is also reflected in the prices of their dishes served, so remember to bring enough cash when dining here.

If you want to take home Filipino snacks, you can also stop by their pasalubong shop, where you can buy delicacies like lengua de gato (butter cookies) and mamon (sponge cake).

Historically speaking, Pampanga has proved to be one of the most important provinces in the country ever since the Spanish Colony. It was the first-ever province created by the Spaniards and therefore became the richest throughout the 333-year reign of Spain. TOP 15 PAMPANGA FOOD AND PAMPANGA DELICACIES

1. adobong camaru.

This Pampanga food (or Kapampangan dish) is not for the faint-hearted. Adobong Camaru is made from crickets (yes, the insect!) cooked in soy sauce, vinegar, garlic and onions. You must try this once in your lifetime.

Aligue, or crab fat, is a delicious, versatile Pampanga delicacies that Filipinos love. It is very versatile that you can use it for plain rice, ingredients to other dishes, or a dip. In Pampanga, it is famously made as a paste (crab paste), which can be bought for as low as PHP 120 per jar.

Another exotic Pampanga food is betute, or stuffed frog. Deep-fried frog legs are quite common to many cuisines, but in Pampanga, a whole frog is stuffed with ground pork and then deep fried. Would you like to try that?

Bopis is not just popular in Pampanga but also in the whole Philippines. It is a tasty dish made with the lungs and heart of pig, vinegar, soy sauce, carrots, onions, garlic, and chili.

The version of Bopis in Pampanga uses the ingredients mentioned except the heart of the pig. This Pampanga food is quite popular as pulutan, or eaten with a cold bottle of beer.

Bringhe is quite similar to Paella. It is a Pampanga food that uses glutinous rice (sometimes mixed equally with regular rice) and its taste is enhanced by native chicken, ginger, coconut milk and  some spices. It is topped with slices of boiled eggs and bell peppers. Indeed, Bringhe is a yummy main course meal that you should not miss in Pampanga!

6. BULANGLANG KAPAMPANGAN

This dish is similar to Sinigang (sour soup) but Bulanglang Kapampangan uses guava to give its sour taste. Its other ingredients are also the same with Sinigang’s, but it smells and taste differently due to the guava flavor. Bulanglang Kapampangan is delicious and perfect for a rainy day.

7. KALDERETANG KAMBING

Kaldereta is a stew which has thick, yummy sauce. Although beef is the usual meat in Kaldereta, Kapampangans love using kambing or goat meat as a tastier option. This Pampanga food is definitely a must-try!

8. MORCON KAPAMPANGAN

Morcon or Murcon is indeed one of the popular Pampanga food that is known to the whole Philippines. It’s a special dish that is always served at gathering, because it really looks nice on the dinner table. Five Restaurants For The Ultimate Pampanga Food Trip

If there is something that Pampanga is known for, aside from Mount Pinatubo, it’s the Kapampangan cuisine. The region takes its food seriously, and it was pronounced the culinary capital of the Philippines — no small feat in a country with a far-reaching gastronomic history.

It takes about two hours from Metro Manila to Pampanga by car — just enough time to get hungry. And while you get hungry, we prepared a list so that you don’t have to. These five restaurants will show you what to eat in Pampanga, and give you a bit of everything from the kitchens of the region.

Aling Lucing’s Sisig — Angeles City

Aling Lucing created the iconic sisig in the 1970s when she invented the recipe using various leftover pig parts. Since then, she has been titled the sisig queen. We asked the same question; what exactly is sisig? It’s a dish of fatty pork bits served on a sizzling hot plate, but the word itself originally meant the Kapampangan way of cooking meat with acidic seasoning.

Café Fleur — Angeles City

Café Fleur ran by chef Sau del Rosario, takes particular pride in Kapampangan dishes in French flair. The avant-garde setting at this colonial-style building in Angeles City presents the perfect atmosphere to enjoy its famous tamales Pampangueña (coconut cream kakanin, which is a collective term for traditional tidbits in the Philippines). The Kapampangan tamales are wrapped in banana leaves and then steamed. This deconstructed snack gets its creamy, buttery texture from the fresh coconut cream and fine rice flour. And if that’s too heavy for you, go for the smoky tinapa fish truffle mousse. Pair it with their pan de sals, Filipino bread rolls, and you are in for a treat!

Reservations are accepted L-463B Miranda St., Brgy. Sto. Rosario, Angeles City +63 45 304-1301

Binulo restaurant – Clarkfield

Binulo is the indigenous Aeta method of cooking food inside bamboo. And all the Binulo dishes are served from the bamboo stalk where they were cooked in. The restaurant is best known for serving authentic Kapampangan cuisine and grilled steaks imported from the United States. There are a few signature dishes on the menu — paco (fiddlehead fern) salad, pangat na ulang (giant freshwater shrimps in a creamy, sour broth) — but it stays firm to the roots of the cuisine. And save room for their pititian with atsara; crispy, glorious, golden rinds of pork served in a basket together with pickled papaya relish.

Reservations are accepted Bldg. 6410-6413, Manuel A. Roxas Hwy, Clark Freeport, Mabalacat, Pampanga +63 45 499-2238

Matam-ih – Clark Freeport Zone

Matam-ih means delicious in Aeta dialect. The language of the Philippines’ earliest known indigenous inhabitants who live in the isolated mountainous parts of Luzon. Matam-ih is widely known for its authentic Kapampangan cuisine and unique dining experience with local celebrities. All the servers are Aetas, and they have adopted stage names of popular superstars like Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, and Regine Velasquez. You can find both exotic and traditional regional dishes such as kare-kareng iking baka (oxtail and tripe in peanut sauce) which is usually served with fermented shrimp paste, Bagoóng. The tender meat and crisp vegetables lead to a very satisfying meal.

Reservations are accepted E Jacinto, Clark Freeport, Clark Special Economic Zone, 2023 Pampanga +63 45 499-2382

Susie’s Cuisine – SM City Clark

Susie’s Cuisine opened in 1972, and it specialises in Pampango kakanin. Some of its signature delicacies include the maja blanca (delicious coconut cream pudding) and the Filipino crème caramel, leche flan (caramel custard pudding). They serve an incredibly long list of sweet treats, and even if it’s all Hebrew to you, or all Kapampangan in this case — you won’t go wrong with any order. They have cassava cake, biko kalabasa, duman pinipig, kalamay ube, sapin-sapin and their famous tibok-tibok (maja), and tibok mais.

6 Must-Try Food in Pampanga [And Where to Find Them]

If you plan to have a food trip with your family and friends, Pampanga is the best choice. As you embark on the journey, here are the 6 must-try food in Pampanga and where to find them:

Buro  is an authentic Kapampangan dish and is a must-try when visiting Pampanga. Its taste and pungent smell may be an issue, so some would not try it. But, when you combine it with a deep-fried fish and veggies, it will give you a bursting flavor.

Taste it at Binulo Restaurant , Bldg. 6410-6413 M.A. Roxas Highway, Clark Freeport Zone .

Sisig originated in Angeles City, Pampanga, and was invited by Aling Lucing year ‘70s. It uses a pig’s head which then boiled, grilled, fried, sliced, and sent to a plate. Although many regions tried to recreate Sisig, Pampanga’s Sisig is unbeatable! You shouldn’t end your trip without tasting a plate of sisig.

Pindang Kalabaw

Pindang Kalabaw , also known as Water Buffalo Tocino, is a very popular Kapampangan tocino. It is cooked in a little amount of water and cooking oil. In cooking, the meat simmers in water until it turns red. Straight from the pot, Pampanga serves it with sukang sasa .

Food Trip: Pampanga

Located just a couple of hours from Metro Manila, Pampanga is a great choice for those looking for a unique food trip destination relatively near the metro. This province in Central Luzon is known as the “Culinary Capital of the Philippines,” known for being the birthplace of chefs who learned cooking techniques from Spaniards during the colonial period and passed down family secrets through generations.

01. food trip pampanga aling lucing sisig tokwat baboy chicharon bulaklak

It’s always difficult to come up with a list of “where to eat” in a destination, and more so when you’re writing about a place that’s known for their great cuisine. Like all food trip guides, this list is by no means definitive. It’s based on places that I have personally tried during media tours & from recommendations of friends who live in the area. If you only have a limited time, these are just some suggestions where to eat. WARNING: Putok-Batok post ahead.

Table of Contents

Aling Lucing’s Sisig

  • Address: Glaciano Valdez St, Angeles, Pampanga
  • Type of cuisine: Filipino
  • Price range: P200 per dish
  • Facebook: Aling Lucing Sisig

03. pampanga aling lucing sisig

Sisig, a dish made of grilled, diced pork cheeks, ears, liver, onions, and pig brain, is pretty much synonymous with Pampanga. The country’s most popular pulutan (food paired with beer) is credited to Lucia Cunanan of Angeles City, who popularized it by using discarded ingredients from Clark Air Base. When in Pampanga, it’s a must to visit Aling Lucing’s Sisig.

02. pampanga aling lucing sisig streetside

This unassuming streetside eatery serves the most authentic Kapampangan Sisig, as well as other specialties like Chicharon Bulaklak (fried pork intestines), Tokwa’t Baboy (Boiled Pork with Fried Tofu), barbecue and Pako Salad.

  • Address: Brgy. San Angelo, San Andres St, Angeles, Pampanga, Philippines
  • Price range: P300-500 per person
  • Restaurant hours: Everyday 10am – 10pm

05. pampanga milas tokwat baboy & sizzling sisig

Mila’s is a humble carinderia operating since 1989 that’s reputed to have one of the best sisigs in Pampanga. The classic sisig is well-seasoned and crispy, pretty good on its own (but preferably with rice). The Tokwa’t Baboy, with crisp and fresh golden fried Tofu, Pig Ears and a delicious blend of Home-made Soy Sauce with Celery and Tomato is hands down the best Tokwa’t Baboy I’ve ever tried.

  • Address: The Quad at Nepo, Nepo mart, Plaridel St. Angeles City
  • Type of cuisine: Kapampangan fusion

A vintage style restaurant serving Filipino food with Claude Tayag’s twist. Specialties include talangka rice, Kare Kare, Duck Dishes and Hito Pork Belly Adobo. The Crispy Bagnetta, a hefty serving of deep-fried pork rolled up like donuts, looks really good, but was a bit on the salty side.

We really liked the Trianggulos (Fried samosa with spinach, tinapa, kesong Puti and pili nuts served with Tomato Sofrito Dip) and Crispy Aromatic Duck (served with Chinese pancakes, mango salsa and hoisin sauce). They also sell bottled products here by Claude Tayag including buro (fermented rice sauce).

11. pampanga cafe fleur

A cafe with pretty interiors that serves Kapampangan cuisine with a twist inspired by Chef Sau del Rosario’s travels. I wasn’t able to try their main dishes but the place is a good option for desserts and hot chocolate. We tried the Tamales Pampanguena, a modern take on a dish made traditionally wrapped in banana leaves and steamed. This version uses coconut cream, ground rice flour, annatto, quail egg, and peanuts.

Since it was raining during our food trip, the Tsokolate Batirol (which came in Green Tea. Chocnut, Polvoron and Sili Flavors) were great. They also have interesting desserts like Brazo de Calamansi, Salted Egg Bibingka Cheesecake and Lechemon (Leche Flan + Mamon).

Cafe Fleur also has a small concept eatery called Leh-Leh, which serves Thai Comfort Food and Babo, a more elegant dining area specializing in Avant-Garde Kapampangan cuisine on the top floor of the same house.

Sanikulas Cookies

Chef Lillian Borromeo or “Atching Lillian” is known for her Kapampangan dishes and pastries like Sanikulas (San Nicolas cookies), made of arrowroot (oraro) flour, sugar, and eggs and formed with traditional wooden molds. She runs “Kusina ni Atching Lillian,” a restaurant in Parian, Mexico, Pampanga where she offers breakfast and lunch buffet for her guests and baking demos.

Chicharon or pork cracklings are another favorite pulutan among Pinoys. You can easily buy this all around the metro, but the first class Chicharon with Laman (more solid and tasty than the puffy airy variants) comes from Guagua, Pampanga. Deadly, but yummy.

NOTE: I know that there are lots more popular places in Pampanga including Everybody’s Cafe, Angeles Fried Chicken, 19 Copung Copung Grill, Tollhouse and more that I haven’t tried yet. There’s only so much you can eat in a weekend and I look forward to going back for the next food trip. What other restaurants in Pampanga can you recommend?

Are these restaurants near to each other? Or are they easy access to each other? Coz I’m planning to have a food trip in pampanga this july. Hope u can help me. Thank you.

There are some restos that are near each other but others are far. I suggest you check each of the resto’s locations on Googlemaps and decide which you can visit. It’s also better if you have private transportation.

Rasoi is a decent restaurant serving Indian cuisines just along the same street as Paizano’s. Believe me, you can barely taste the strong and bold spices of their wide variety of Indian dishes savory to the tongue, from the original Indian Naan bread, the creamy tomato sauce of this orange-colored Chicken Tikka Masala, flat bread Roti, and more dishes to delight your palate! One of my favorite is the samosa with this spicy bottle mint sauce. Not a fan of hot sauce but Samosa plus the dipping sauce was just fantastic!

Clark Museum

Our first Angeles experience started with the relaunching event at Clark Museum. I consider this as one of my favorite part of the Angeles tour. Historical pieces, art exhibits, traditional and native hunting tools  of the Aeta tribe, volcanic rocks from Pinatubo and more local relics.

Ultimate Food & Travel Guide to Angeles City, Pampanga @tourismPHL

There is this area in the museum with lanterns displayed, lighted Christmas lanterns! And they have this gigantic lantern which is powered by a machine that when you turn the steering wheel, it produces a sequence of switching on and off of the lights.

And from the museum, we headed to the intriguing 4D theater. We were brought back to the past, from the moment Angeles City became a permanent quarter of the American forces, to the catastrophe brought by the eruption of Pinatubo, up to what Angeles City has become today.

Museo ning Angeles

In 1999, Kuliat Foundation, a non-stock and non-profit organization started their first step on preserving city’s rich history, culture and tradition with full support from the local government and city tourism office. In order to further promote city tourism, they worked hand in hand with the ongoing development of the heritage district. Beginning to open doors to the public, making there mark as a Food Capital, particularly with their ever famous Sisig, and sharing preserved culture that the city has.

Ultimate Food & Travel Guide to Angeles City, Pampanga @tourismPHL

Museo ning Angles is divided into four gallery, Sukulan Gallery, Vicente Alvarez Dizon Gallery, Balikdan Gallery, Culinarium, and the newest, Cafe Museo. Cloudy day yet just perfect for a cup of Tsokolateng Batirol and Putong Babi at Cafe Museo. We even witnessed how Chef Richard personally prepares the Tsokolateng Batirol. This warm melted tablea (pure cacao beans) chocolate drink is stirred by a wooden Batirol which is the key to its perfection. Putong Babi on the other hand is Angeles’ local version of pork buns. Made of a half slice Pandesal, egg, mashed Camote and fried in lard which gives us the idea on where its name was derived as Babi in kapampangan means Pig. The sweetish creamy taste of Tsokolateng Batirol is definitely best with the fair salty taste of the Putong Babi on a perfect drip drop cold weather.

Culinary shocker frogs and crickets, dished out for a cooking demo at the Culinarium area of the Museo. As a big fan of bizarre food, both exotics definitely won my palate hands down. What makes Betuteng Tugak (stuffed frog) a favorite is the filling, the organic flavorsome spices that enhances the taste of the meat, taste even better than Chicken. Adobong Kamaru (cricket), simple yet embraced by serious flavors of great piquancy with these crunchy cricket legs tickling your tongue.

Pamintuan Mansion

This mansion was built around the 80’s by Don Florentino Pamintuan in which ownership was later passed on to the Tablante family. Later on, the property was donated to the Central Bank of the Philippines, passed on to the national government, Department of Finance and to the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP).

The first and only anniversary celebration of Philippine Independence Day (12th of June 1899) was held at the Pamintuan Mansion. It also served as the Malacañang of the North whereas the first Philippine president of the republic, Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, was said to moved the seat of government from Cavite to Angeles, making the mansion as the headquarter.

A tour inside the mansion, we were pointed to the main entrance where the Señora’s calesa goes in and the reception area where certain parts are said to be restricted from those who don’t belong to the “alta sa ciudad” or unwelcome visitors/relatives.

Mansion was being developed as they built public comfort rooms plus a class room type audio visual room for the kids to learn. Quite fine architecture can be seen inside the mansion, a mixture of Victorian and local influence. It’s a lucky day for us since the mansion is not yet opened to the public, but we were allowed to visit the place. Inauguration of the mansion as a museum was held last August 2015.

Center for Kapampangan Studies

Quick walk from Mueso ning Angeles, just crossing the streets and we finally entered the largest university outside Manila, the Holy Angel University. We were heading to the Center for Kapmapangan Studies, which is located inside the university. Few steps, as we reached our destination, trees welcomed us, trees with quite interesting names. Most of the town names in Pampanga were derived from these trees: Dau, Balacat (Mabalacat), Panipuan, & Betis.

The Center for Kapampangan Studies promotes culture preservation of the local Kapampangans, from local craftsmanship, paintings, and other historical pieces of the city itself.

The Kapampangan also has their own indigenous writing system, the Kulitan, in which most of its characters came from various Asian countries. They even have this computer where you can type words and it will translate these words to the Kulitan writing.

Bale-Balayan, the museum for the poor, was founded by an artist with the love for culture and arts preservation, Mr. Peter De Vera. A museum and music-and-dance training center, Bale-Balayan provides the less-fortunate members of the society the opportunity to develop and show their craft and artistry.

Ultimate Food & Travel Guide to Angeles City, Pampanga @tourismPHL

From Cordillera inspired library and reception area in the entrance, we moved to the Spanish influenced area of the museum. They have this prayer room area, where the “Our Lady of Montserrat” is placed. They also have there own interpretation of the station of the cross, influenced by social, political and environmental issues. These art pieces are made of real human blood stains which they collect from the flagellants who partake and scourge themselves in public every Semana Santa. They also have this Asian influenced meditation room with various wood and metal sculptures, crafted by the locals and some imported from other Asian countries.

We even witnessed a great performance from the children as they played native instruments and we had some snack and treats whilst watching them (I love the Tanglad tea that they served).

Deca Wake Clark Park

Ultimate Food & Travel Guide to Angeles City, Pampanga @tourismPHL

Basic safety tips as shared by the owner, specially along the Pro’s Area, if out of control and heading for an obstacle that you wanna get away from,  you just need to let go of the handle, and if you fall in the water, keep an eye all the time. Watch out for other wakeboarders and handles that travels at around 30 km/h. Of course, you don’t want to get hit by those handle in the head. Just pay attention. Life vest and helmet will be provided by the staff upon registration. They also have shower rooms within the area. Planned to just try wakeboarding in the Beginner’s area but we don’t want to waste time with the long queue so we moved to the Pros area, assuming that we can go along with all those wakeboarding enthusiasts who can lift there boards and jump off the ramps! A real kickass experience, I’ll definitely comeback! (for more wipeout experience haha)

I saved money by shopping at Costco before a 2-week van trip. Here are the items I'm glad I bought.

  • I headed to Costco before a two-week trip in a 75-square-foot van.
  • I wasn't sure I'd find much for my tiny home considering the store sells items in bulk.
  • I left with a full cart, saved money, and had supplies like ravioli and hand warmers for the trip.

Insider Today

Tiny living and Costco seem like they shouldn't go together.

The wholesale store is known for selling items in bulk. Meanwhile, a campervan means limited space.

But I'm a sucker for a deal, so I headed to my nearest Costco outside Denver before a two-week trip in a 75-square-foot van .

Before embarking on a two-week road trip in a van, I headed to Costco to load up on groceries and other essential items.

pampanga food trip 2023

The two-week road trip would take me through Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Nevada, and Utah. I knew I needed to stock up on groceries, road snacks, and winter essentials like hand warmers.

While I wasn't sure Costco was the ideal store for van dwellers since it sells items in bulk, I figured I would start there and see what deals I could find.

To my surprise, I found I could easily fill an entire cart with meals, snacks, and goods that would come in handy for the trip.

I grabbed a cart and one of the first things I added was Liquid I.V. for $22.99.

pampanga food trip 2023

I often bring packets of the electrolyte hydration mix Liquid I.V. on ski days, backpacking trips, and long days outdoors to keep me hydrated.

Since I had two weeks of outdoor adventures ahead of me, Liquid I.V. was a must.

Plus, 24 packets for $23 was a fair price. Later that week, I went on a Target run where 10 packets of Liquid I.V. were being sold for $18. On Liquid I.V.'s website , a 14-pack is sold for $25.

No matter where I am, eggs are an essential. Costco sells two dozen for $3.99.

pampanga food trip 2023

It's hard to beat Costco's deal on eggs. I knew the moment I stepped inside the store that I'd grab a carton.

For $3.99, I could eat two eggs each morning of my trip (as long as I bought breakfast twice).

I wanted vegetarian dinner options for my nights at campsites, so I picked up two packages of ravioli for $11.99.

pampanga food trip 2023

When mapping out the trip, I planned to get to my campsites before sunset to avoid driving on rough roads in the dark. This meant I would cook most dinners in my van.

When I arrived at Costco, I wanted to find easy, vegetarian meals I could cook.

Ravioli fit the bill. The two packages were enough for four meals, and the pasta was delicious.

I've had Trader Joe's butternut squash ravioli before, but Giovanni Rana is a new favorite. Plus, it's a great deal. A similar pasta by the same brand costs $7.24 for 18 ounces at Walmart. I got 32 ounces for $11.99.

I also found a vegetarian soup. Two jars cost $14.99.

pampanga food trip 2023

As I wandered through the aisles, I stumbled upon a French pesto soup by the company Karine and Jeff .

The vegetarian soup cost $13.99 for two jars — enough for four meals. I saw one jar selling for about the same price as two online .

My favorite part, though, was that it was an ideal size for a van with just two jars.

In the produce area, I purchased salad kits for $6.99.

pampanga food trip 2023

To pair with my ravioli and soup, I needed a salad. Thankfully, I found a pair of Taylor Farms salad kits for $6.99.

The kits I purchased came with salad, dressing, and toppings like sesame seeds, wontons, and nuts.

I'd save space by not needing to buy each ingredient separately, and I found that the kits — which contained both cabbage and romaine lettuce — stayed fresh in the fridge.

I also grabbed raspberries for $3.99.

pampanga food trip 2023

I knew I'd pack snacks, but I wanted a few healthy options, too.

So I grabbed two 6-ounce containers of raspberries. It was a good deal. I usually pay about the same amount for just one container at my local grocery store.

Plus, I can eat that many raspberries in one sitting, so I knew they wouldn't go bad.

I stocked up on snacks like Dot's Homestyle Pretzels, which cost $9.99.

pampanga food trip 2023

I absolutely love Dot's Homestyle Pretzels . The pretzel sticks are coated in a savory seasoning, and I can never get enough of them.

My main complaint is the price. Typically, a 16-ounce bag costs $7 at my local Target, which I think is a bit expensive.

So when I spotted a 32-ounce bag for only $9.99 at Costco, I was thrilled. The bag wouldn't be too big to store in the cabinets of my van, and I knew it was a snack I'd eat every last crumb of.

Most of the snacks I spotted were in packages that would be far too big for a van. Thankfully, some yogurt-covered almonds were the right size.

pampanga food trip 2023

As I walked down Costco's aisles, I spotted enormous boxes of cereal and even bigger bags of chips.

I knew I wouldn't consume that many chips or that much cereal in two weeks, and, more importantly, I wouldn't have the space for these items.

However, I could definitely polish off a large bag of yogurt-covered almonds in two weeks.

The Sconza Thins' strawberry-coated almonds were an ideal size at 22 ounces. And I thought they were affordable at $4.97 for the bag.

I love Bobo's oat bars and figured these PB&J granola bars meant I wouldn't need to buy peanut butter, jelly, or bread.

pampanga food trip 2023

Bobo's are easily my favorite granola bar. They're always in my hiking backpack, so I figured I'd pack some on my van trip, too.

I also thought the PB&J version would help me save space since I could skip packing peanut butter, jelly, and bread and have a snack version of the sandwich instead.

For $14.99, I grabbed 20 granola bars. I thought it was a steal since the same box costs $29.99 on Bobo's website .

I picked up an enormous bag of popcorn for $5.99, which turned out to be a mistake.

pampanga food trip 2023

I love Boomchickapop's sweet-and-salty kettle corn, so, without thinking, I grabbed the enormous bag.

While it was a good deal at $5.99 for 25 ounces (a 7-ounce bag at Target costs $3.79), it was far too big to fit in the storage provided in my van.

The large bag couldn't be stuffed into any cabinet, so for the bulk of the trip, it joined me in the passenger seat.

If I were to do van life full-time, I'd have to buy smaller-sized snacks or skip out on items like this to save space.

I also purchased household necessities like Lysol wipes for $10.99.

pampanga food trip 2023

Messes were bound to happen in my van, so I wanted to make sure I was stocked with cleaning supplies.

Instead of buying bottles of cleaners and rolls of paper towels, I opted for a four-pack of Lysol wipes. They came in handy when I needed to wipe down my van's countertops and clean my swivel table.

I only used one of the four containers during my two-week trip, but if I lived in a van full-time, the price would be worth finding the storage for all four. At Target, a single container costs $5.99 . I purchased a pack of four for $10.99.

Finally, I grabbed hand warmers for $13.99. I'd be traveling to some chilly places and knew I wanted something to keep me warm on hikes and walks.

pampanga food trip 2023

I get cold quickly and easily, so disposable hand warmers are always with me on my travels to cooler places.

At Costco, one large box with 40 pairs of Heat Pro hand warmers cost me $13.99. A similar box with a few more pairs is listed for $34.90 on Amazon .

I left Costco with a full cart, savings, and some helpful items for my trip ahead.

pampanga food trip 2023

I spent less than $200 on food and supplies for my van trip at Costco, and I estimate I saved close to $75 on my bulk purchases.

While I made some mistakes — like buying way too much popcorn — other items, like Liquid I.V. and hand warmers, came in handy throughout the trip.

If I decided to do van life full-time, I'm sure plenty of the items I purchased would become staples in my tiny home.

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow: The Best of Moscow!

I just got back from one week in Moscow. And, as you might have already guessed, it was a mind-boggling experience. It was not my first trip to the Russian capital. But I hardly ever got enough time to explore this sprawling city. Visiting places for business rarely leaves enough time for sightseeing. I think that if you’ve got one week in Russia, you can also consider splitting your time between its largest cities (i.e. Saint Petersburg ) to get the most out of your trip. Seven days will let you see the majority of the main sights and go beyond just scratching the surface. In this post, I’m going to share with you my idea of the perfect travel itinerary for one week in Moscow.

Moscow is perhaps both the business and cultural hub of Russia. There is a lot more to see here than just the Kremlin and Saint Basil’s Cathedral. Centuries-old churches with onion-shaped domes dotted around the city are in stark contrast with newly completed impressive skyscrapers of Moscow City dominating the skyline. I spent a lot of time thinking about my Moscow itinerary before I left. And this city lived up to all of my expectations.

7-day Moscow itinerary

Travel Itinerary For One Week in Moscow

Day 1 – red square and the kremlin.

Metro Station: Okhotny Ryad on Red Line.

No trip to Moscow would be complete without seeing its main attraction. The Red Square is just a stone’s throw away from several metro stations. It is home to some of the most impressive architectural masterpieces in the city. The first thing you’ll probably notice after entering it and passing vendors selling weird fur hats is the fairytale-like looking Saint Basil’s Cathedral. It was built to commemorate one of the major victories of Ivan the Terrible. I once spent 20 minutes gazing at it, trying to find the perfect angle to snap it. It was easier said than done because of the hordes of locals and tourists.

As you continue strolling around Red Square, there’s no way you can miss Gum. It was widely known as the main department store during the Soviet Era. Now this large (yet historic) shopping mall is filled with expensive boutiques, pricey eateries, etc. During my trip to Moscow, I was on a tight budget. So I only took a retro-style stroll in Gum to get a rare glimpse of a place where Soviet leaders used to grocery shop and buy their stuff. In case you want some modern shopping experience, head to the Okhotny Ryad Shopping Center with stores like New Yorker, Zara, and Adidas.

To continue this Moscow itinerary, next you may want to go inside the Kremlin walls. This is the center of Russian political power and the president’s official residence. If you’re planning to pay Kremlin a visit do your best to visit Ivan the Great Bell Tower as well. Go there as early as possible to avoid crowds and get an incredible bird’s-eye view. There are a couple of museums that are available during designated visiting hours. Make sure to book your ticket online and avoid lines.

Day 2 – Cathedral of Christ the Saviour, the Tretyakov Gallery, and the Arbat Street

Metro Station: Kropotkinskaya on Red Line

As soon as you start creating a Moscow itinerary for your second day, you’ll discover that there are plenty of metro stations that are much closer to certain sites. Depending on your route, take a closer look at the metro map to pick the closest.

The white marble walls of Christ the Saviour Cathedral are awe-inspiring. As you approach this tallest Orthodox Christian church, you may notice the bronze sculptures, magnificent arches, and cupolas that were created to commemorate Russia’s victory against Napoleon.

travel itinerary for one week in Moscow

How to Get a Decent Haircut in a Foreign Country

Unfortunately, the current Cathedral is a replica, since original was blown to bits in 1931 by the Soviet government. The new cathedral basically follows the original design, but they have added some new elements such as marble high reliefs.

Home to some precious collection of artworks, in Tretyakov Gallery you can find more than 150,000 of works spanning centuries of artistic endeavor. Originally a privately owned gallery, it now has become one of the largest museums in Russia. The Gallery is often considered essential to visit. But I have encountered a lot of locals who have never been there.

Famous for its souvenirs, musicians, and theaters, Arbat street is among the few in Moscow that were turned into pedestrian zones. Arbat street is usually very busy with tourists and locals alike. My local friend once called it the oldest street in Moscow dating back to 1493. It is a kilometer long walking street filled with fancy gift shops, small cozy restaurants, lots of cute cafes, and street artists. It is closed to any vehicular traffic, so you can easily stroll it with kids.

Day 3 – Moscow River Boat Ride, Poklonnaya Hill Victory Park, the Moscow City

Metro Station: Kievskaya and Park Pobedy on Dark Blue Line / Vystavochnaya on Light Blue Line

Voyaging along the Moscow River is definitely one of the best ways to catch a glimpse of the city and see the attractions from a bit different perspective. Depending on your Moscow itinerary, travel budget and the time of the year, there are various types of boats available. In the summer there is no shortage of boats, and you’ll be spoiled for choice.

exploring Moscow

Travel Itinerary for One Week in Beijing

If you find yourself in Moscow during the winter months, I’d recommend going with Radisson boat cruise. These are often more expensive (yet comfy). They offer refreshments like tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and, of course, alcoholic drinks. Prices may vary but mostly depend on your food and drink selection. Find their main pier near the opulent Ukraine hotel . The hotel is one of the “Seven Sisters”, so if you’re into the charm of Stalinist architecture don’t miss a chance to stay there.

The area near Poklonnaya Hill has the closest relation to the country’s recent past. The memorial complex was completed in the mid-1990s to commemorate the Victory and WW2 casualties. Also known as the Great Patriotic War Museum, activities here include indoor attractions while the grounds around host an open-air museum with old tanks and other vehicles used on the battlefield.

How I Planned My Trip to Vietnam

The hallmark of the memorial complex and the first thing you see as you exit metro is the statue of Nike mounted to its column. This is a very impressive Obelisk with a statue of Saint George slaying the dragon at its base.

Maybe not as impressive as Shanghai’s Oriental Pearl Tower , the skyscrapers of the Moscow City (otherwise known as Moscow International Business Center) are so drastically different from dull Soviet architecture. With 239 meters and 60 floors, the Empire Tower is the seventh highest building in the business district.

The observation deck occupies 56 floor from where you have some panoramic views of the city. I loved the view in the direction of Moscow State University and Luzhniki stadium as well to the other side with residential quarters. The entrance fee is pricey, but if you’re want to get a bird’s eye view, the skyscraper is one of the best places for doing just that.

Day 4 – VDNKh, Worker and Collective Farm Woman Monument, The Ostankino TV Tower

Metro Station: VDNKh on Orange Line

VDNKh is one of my favorite attractions in Moscow. The weird abbreviation actually stands for Russian vystavka dostizheniy narodnogo khozyaystva (Exhibition of Achievements of the National Economy). With more than 200 buildings and 30 pavilions on the grounds, VDNKh serves as an open-air museum. You can easily spend a full day here since the park occupies a very large area.

Moscow sights

Places to Visit in Barcelona That Aren’t Beaches

First, there are pavilions that used to showcase different cultures the USSR was made of. Additionally, there is a number of shopping pavilions, as well as Moskvarium (an Oceanarium) that features a variety of marine species. VDNKh is a popular venue for events and fairs. There is always something going on, so I’d recommend checking their website if you want to see some particular exhibition.

A stone’s throw away from VDNKh there is a very distinctive 25-meters high monument. Originally built in 1937 for the world fair in Paris, the hulking figures of men and women holding a hammer and a sickle represent the Soviet idea of united workers and farmers. It doesn’t take much time to see the monument, but visiting it gives some idea of the Soviet Union’s grandiose aspirations.

I have a thing for tall buildings. So to continue my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow I decided to climb the fourth highest TV tower in the world. This iconic 540m tower is a fixture of the skyline. You can see it virtually from everywhere in Moscow, and this is where you can get the best panoramic views (yep, even better than Empire skyscraper).

top things to do in Moscow

Parts of the floor are made of tempered glass, so it can be quite scary to exit the elevator. But trust me, as you start observing buildings and cars below, you won’t want to leave. There is only a limited number of tickets per day, so you may want to book online. Insider tip: the first tour is cheaper, you can save up to $10 if go there early.

Day 5 – A Tour To Moscow Manor Houses

Metro Station: Kolomenskoye, Tsaritsyno on Dark Green Line / Kuskovo on Purple Line

I love visiting the manor houses and palaces in Moscow. These opulent buildings were generally built to house Russian aristocratic families and monarchs. Houses tend to be rather grand affairs with impressive architecture. And, depending on the whims of the owners, some form of a landscaped garden.

During the early part of the 20th century though, many of Russia’s aristocratic families (including the family of the last emperor) ended up being killed or moving abroad . Their manor houses were nationalized. Some time later (after the fall of the USSR) these were open to the public. It means that today a great many of Moscow’s finest manor houses and palaces are open for touring.

one week Moscow itinerary

20 Travel Tips I’ve Learned From Travelling The World

There are 20 manor houses scattered throughout the city and more than 25 in the area around. But not all of them easily accessible and exploring them often takes a lot of time. I’d recommend focusing on three most popular estates in Moscow that are some 30-minute metro ride away from Kremlin.

Sandwiched between the Moscow River and the Andropov Avenue, Kolomenskoye is a UNESCO site that became a public park in the 1920’s. Once a former royal estate, now it is one of the most tranquil parks in the city with gorgeous views. The Ascension Church, The White Column, and the grounds are a truly grand place to visit.

You could easily spend a full day here, exploring a traditional Russian village (that is, in fact, a market), picnicking by the river, enjoying the Eastern Orthodox church architecture, hiking the grounds as well as and wandering the park and gardens with wildflower meadows, apple orchards, and birch and maple groves. The estate museum showcases Russian nature at its finest year-round.

12 Stunning National Parks and Regional Parks In France

If my travel itinerary for one week in Moscow was a family tree, Tsaritsyno Park would probably be the crazy uncle that no-one talks about. It’s a large park in the south of the city of mind-boggling proportions, unbelievable in so many ways, and yet most travelers have never heard of it.

The palace was supposed to be a summer home for Empress Catherine the Great. But since the construction didn’t meet with her approval the palace was abandoned. Since the early 1990’s the palace, the pond, and the grounds have been undergoing renovations. The entire complex is now looking brighter and more elaborately decorated than at possibly any other time during its history. Like most parks in Moscow, you can visit Tsaritsyno free of charge, but there is a small fee if you want to visit the palace.

How To Stop Procrastinating When Trip Planning

Last, but by no means least on my Moscow itinerary is Kuskovo Park . This is definitely an off-the-beaten-path place. While it is not easily accessible, you will be rewarded with a lack of crowds. This 18th-century summer country house of the Sheremetev family was one of the first summer country estates of the Russian nobility. And when you visit you’ll quickly realize why locals love this park.

Like many other estates, Kuskovo has just been renovated. So there are lovely French formal garden, a grotto, and the Dutch house to explore. Make sure to plan your itinerary well because the estate is some way from a metro station.

Day 6 – Explore the Golden Ring

Creating the Moscow itinerary may keep you busy for days with the seemingly endless amount of things to do. Visiting the so-called Golden Ring is like stepping back in time. Golden Ring is a “theme route” devised by promotion-minded journalist and writer Yuri Bychkov.

Having started in Moscow the route will take you through a number of historical cities. It now includes Suzdal, Vladimir, Kostroma, Yaroslavl and Sergiev Posad. All these awe-inspiring towns have their own smaller kremlins and feature dramatic churches with onion-shaped domes, tranquil residential areas, and other architectural landmarks.

Two Weeks In Thailand: The Perfect 14-Day Itinerary

I only visited two out of eight cities included on the route. It is a no-brainer that Sergiev Posad is the nearest and the easiest city to see on a day trip from Moscow. That being said, you can explore its main attractions in just one day. Located some 70 km north-east of the Russian capital, this tiny and overlooked town is home to Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius, UNESCO Site.

things to do in Moscow in seven days

Sergiev Posad is often described as being at the heart of Russian spiritual life. So it is uncommon to see the crowds of Russian pilgrims showing a deep reverence for their religion. If you’re traveling independently and using public transport, you can reach Sergiev Posad by bus (departs from VDNKh) or by suburban commuter train from Yaroslavskaya Railway Station (Bahnhof). It takes about one and a half hours to reach the town.

Trinity Lavra of St. Sergius is a great place to get a glimpse of filling and warming Russian lunch, specifically at the “ Gostevaya Izba ” restaurant. Try the duck breast, hearty potato and vegetables, and the awesome Napoleon cake.

Day 7 – Gorky Park, Izmailovo Kremlin, Patriarch’s Ponds

Metro Station: Park Kultury or Oktyabrskaya on Circle Line / Partizanskaya on Dark Blue Line / Pushkinskaya on Dark Green Line

Gorky Park is in the heart of Moscow. It offers many different types of outdoor activities, such as dancing, cycling, skateboarding, walking, jogging, and anything else you can do in a park. Named after Maxim Gorky, this sprawling and lovely park is where locals go on a picnic, relax and enjoy free yoga classes. It’s a popular place to bike around, and there is a Muzeon Art Park not far from here. A dynamic location with a younger vibe. There is also a pier, so you can take a cruise along the river too.

How to Save Money While Traveling in Europe

The Kremlin in Izmailovo is by no means like the one you can find near the Red Square. Originally built for decorative purposes, it now features the Vernissage flea market and a number of frequent fairs, exhibitions, and conferences. Every weekend, there’s a giant flea market in Izmailovo, where dozens of stalls sell Soviet propaganda crap, Russian nesting dolls, vinyl records, jewelry and just about any object you can imagine. Go early in the morning if you want to beat the crowds.

All the Bulgakov’s fans should pay a visit to Patriarch’s Ponds (yup, that is plural). With a lovely small city park and the only one (!) pond in the middle, the location is where the opening scene of Bulgakov’s novel Master and Margarita was set. The novel is centered around a visit by Devil to the atheistic Soviet Union is considered by many critics to be one of the best novels of the 20th century. I spent great two hours strolling the nearby streets and having lunch in the hipster cafe.

Conclusion and Recommendations

To conclude, Moscow is a safe city to visit. I have never had a problem with getting around and most locals are really friendly once they know you’re a foreigner. Moscow has undergone some serious reconstruction over the last few years. So you can expect some places to be completely different. I hope my one week Moscow itinerary was helpful! If you have less time, say 4 days or 5 days, I would cut out day 6 and day 7. You could save the Golden Ring for a separate trip entirely as there’s lots to see!

I know very little about Moscow or Russia for the\at matter. I do know I would have to see the Red Square and all of its exquisite architectural masterpieces. Also the CATHEDRAL OF CHRIST THE SAVIOUR. Thanks for shedding some light on visiting Moscow.

Thanks for swinging by! The Red Square is a great starting point, but there way too many places and things to discover aside from it!

Moscow is the capital of Russia and there are few cities in the world that have played such a significant part in history.

Home to the Kremlin, the Red Square, the colorful St. Basil's Cathedral, and many more famous landmarks, Moscow is a city like no other.

This Moscow itinerary will help you plan your trip and make the most of your time in Moscow. From the best places to see in Moscow to how to get around, this post has got you covered.

Important things to know when planning a trip to Moscow

The best time to plan a trip to Moscow is April-May and September-October . During these months temperatures are (generally) quite comfortable, though even in April there can be a bit of snow! The summer months are hot, both in regard to temperature as well as activities in the city. While it's a nice time to visit, it's also the busiest time of the year to visit Moscow. Hotel prices reflect this as well and summer definitely isn't a great time for budget travelers to visit Moscow. Winter in Moscow is cold, and I mean seriously cold (-15°C isn't rare). However, if you can withstand the subzero temperatures and freezing winds, it can be a magical time to visit. A snow-covered St. Basil’s Cathedral is a sight you will never forget. Keep in mind that days are short in winter and be sure to bring plenty of warm winter clothes!

The official currency in Russia is the Russian Ruble (₽ or RUB). Here you can find the current exchange rates, at the time of writing €1 is approximately 70RUB and $1 is around 62RUB.

Yes, you probably do. Getting a visa for Russia requires a bit of time and effort. You need to fill out several forms and provide a detailed travel itinerary and information about your accommodation. Also, you will need a Visa Support Letter which can be provided by your travel agency or your hotel. Depending on your nationality, there may be additional requirements, please refer to the information provided on the website of your country's Embassy in Russia.

While most of the things to see in Moscow listed in this post are within walking distance of each other, sometimes you will have to travel a bit further afield. The best way to get around in Moscow is by metro. It's cheap and efficient and a sightseeing activity in itself, because Moscow has the most beautiful metro stations in the world ! Among the most exquisitely decorated stations are Komsomolskaya, Novoslobodskaya, Mayakovskaya, Taganskaya, and Prospect Mira Station, but there are many more worthwhile stations to be found in the Moscow underground. You can purchase a single ticket from one of the ticket machines or get a rechargeable Troika Card when you plan on taking the metro several times. Read more details on how to use the Moscow metro here . If you prefer to get around by taxi, that's possible too. We used the Gett app to order a taxi (similar to Uber) to avoid confusion about our intended destination and having to negotiate in Russian. A convenient extra for families is the Gett Kids option, these cars are outfitted with a car seat.

The best things to do in Moscow

While you could easily spend a week in Moscow (or more), most of us, unfortunately, don't have that much time available.

This 3-day Moscow itinerary will guide you to the most popular and important places to visit in Moscow, as well as to some of the more unusual things to do in Moscow.

Below you can find the list of the Moscow sightseeing highlights included in this post.

The Red Square

Gum department store, st. basil's cathedral, lenin's mausoleum, the state historical museum, the kremlin, cathedral of christ the saviour.

  • The Bolshoi Theatre

Moscow itinerary day 1

The Red Square Moscow Russia

There is no better place to start your first day in Moscow, than at the world-famous Red Square.

This square is considered the central square of Moscow, not just because all the major streets start here, but also because no matter where you look when standing on this square, there are historic buildings all around.

Starting with the impressive GUM store and going clockwise, there is the colorful Saint Basil's Cathedral, the Kremlin, Lenin's Mausoleum, the State Historical Museum, and the Kazan Cathedral.

However, before entering any of these Moscow must-see attractions, allow yourself a moment to take in the view and let it sink in that you're standing on historical grounds (and a UNESCO site).

The Red Square was the official address of the Soviet government and played an important part in history. Many military parades have been held (and are still being held) here. It's the place where protests have taken place, as well as high-profile concerts from famous international artists.

All in all, it's one of the places in Moscow you can't miss during your Moscow city trip!

Red Square with GUM department store in Moscow

Yulia from That's What She Had: it might seem like visiting a department store is not something you’d do on the first visit to Russia’s capital.

But GUM is not like any other department store and is well worth your time, if only for its unique architecture.

First of all, it’s located right on Red Square which makes it an easy stop on your Moscow trip itinerary. Second, GUM is not a simple mall, but an institution built in the late XIX century.

The abbreviation stands for  Glavniy Universalniy Magazin or Main Universal Store. Its impressive facade extends for over 240 meters along the eastern side of Red Square.

Inside you’ll find a beautiful glass ceiling supported by a metal framework, not unlike the ones found in the old train stations of Great Britain.

pampanga food trip 2023

While shopping in GUM will cost you an arm and a leg, there’s one reason why tourists and locals come here anyways:  traditional Russian food  at Stolovaya #57. Stolovaya is Russian for canteen and this is where you can get your  pelmeni , borsch , and  pirozhki  fix!

Afterward, don’t forget to get the famous  plombir  ice cream in one of the kiosks on the ground floor.

Saint Basil's Cathedral Moscow

Saint Basil's Cathedral with its colorful domes is easily recognizable and one of the most popular Moscow tourist attractions. The building, built on orders from Ivan the Terrible, was completed in 1561 to commemorate the victory over Kazan and Astrakhan.

Until the construction of Ivan the Great Bell Tower (which can be found within the walls of the Kremlin), it was the tallest building in Moscow.

The design of St. Basil's Cathedral is truly unique; it's shaped like the flame of a bonfire and not one building in a similar style can be found in the whole of Russia.

A legend tells the story of how Ivan the Terrible had the architects of the Cathedral blinded so they could never build anything comparable.

This is a myth, however, but the fact remains that Saint Basil's Cathedral is one of a kind and it's not surprising it has become the symbol of Russia.

Lenin Mausoleum Moscow Russia

Wendy from The Nomadic Vegan: Lenin Mausoleum is hard to miss. It's a stepped-pyramid construction that sits right at the base of the Kremlin walls on the western side of Red Square.

Entrance is free but note that opening hours are quite limited, with visiting hours lasting only from 10 am to 1 pm on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

If seeing Lenin's embalmed body is important to you, be sure to take this into account when planning your itinerary in Moscow.

One of my  top tips for travelers to Russia  is to arrive early, well before the mausoleum opens, as the queue is usually quite long. However, usually, the queue does move pretty quickly.

This is especially true now that they have lifted the ban on bags and cameras.

It used to be that all cameras, smartphones, and bags of any size had to be checked at a left-luggage office nearby. But now you can bring a small handbag or backpack as well as your camera and phone.

Photography inside the mausoleum is still strictly forbidden, but you are allowed to take photos of the graves of various other important Russian figures that line the path leading to the mausoleum.

Once you finally enter the mausoleum, the atmosphere is surprisingly peaceful and uncrowded. It doesn't feel nearly as rushed as when visiting Mao Ze Dong's tomb in Beijing or Ho Chi Minh's body in Hanoi , for example.

The illumination of the body is very well done and would make for superb photography if it wasn't forbidden. As an added bonus, just after you exit, you'll see the grave of Joseph Stalin outside.

State Historical Museum Moscow

Rai from A Rai Of Light: the imposing crimson building at the northern end of the Red Square is the State Historical Museum.

By decree of Alexander III, the museum was built with the support of Russian historians, philosophers, and artists. The red brick building, dating from 1875, was designed in the Russian revival style by Vladimir Shervud.

The National Museum of Russia houses a collection of over four million items, devoted to the history of the country's ancient and imperial period.

The exhibitions include many items previously owned by members of the Romanov dynasty, such as documents, artwork, personal items, furnishings, and decorations from the palace interiors.

Another exhibit features relics of the prehistoric tribes that once inhabited this region.

Notable items include ancient manuscripts, birch-bark scrolls, a longboat excavated from the banks of the Volga River, and the largest coin collection in Russia, sourced from the museums in St Petersburg .

The State Historical Museum is open daily from 10 am to 6 pm. The entrance fee is 700₽ per adult.

Moscow itinerary day 2

Cathedral Square inside the Kremlin

When listing the best Moscow things to do, one cannot miss the Kremlin! The Kremlin houses the current seat of power in Russia and has done so for several decades.

Within its walls, the offices of the Russian Government can be found. During Soviet rule, the Kremlin was where all the important decisions were made but its history goes back for many centuries.

The first mention of the Kremlin in history books was in 1147, however, the current citadel dates from the 16th century.

The Kremlin is one of the major fortifications found in Europe, with walls that are up to 6.5 meters thick and 19 meters high in particular sections.

Inside the complex, there are many government buildings, however, these aren't accessible to the public.

Around Cathedral Square you'll find (as the name suggests) many churches and cathedrals, such as the Cathedral of the Archangel, Annunciation Cathedral, the Church of Laying Our Lady's Holy Robe, and Ivan the Great Bell-Tower.

While Cathedral Square is definitely worth visiting, the highlight of the Kremlin is a visit to the Armoury.

Inside you can find an impressive collection of Faberge eggs, beautiful dresses worn by Catherine the Great, intricately decorated thrones used by the Tsars, and much more. Unfortunately, photography is forbidden inside the Armoury.

Practical information about visiting the Kremlin

In order to visit both Cathedral Square and the Armoury, you will have to buy two separate tickets. A ticket to Cathedral Square costs 700₽ and a ticket to the Armoury is 1000₽. Prices mentioned are for adults, children below 16 years old are free.

Tickets can be bought at the ticket office onsite on the same day, however, there's no guarantee tickets will be available, especially during peak season.

Conveniently, tickets can be bought online as well, which is highly advisable if you want to make sure you'll be able to visit the Kremlin during your city trip to Moscow.

How much time to spend at the Kremlin

Be sure to allow plenty of time to explore the Kremlin, at least half a day but it's easy to spend more time as there is so much to see.

Please note there isn't any food sold inside the Kremlin, so bring a snack and enough water (especially in summer when it can get pretty hot).

Luggage storage

Backpacks aren't allowed inside the Kremlin, they can be stored (for free) in the cloakroom, but you can bring your camera and a small purse.

We could also take our Babyzen Yoyo stroller inside, which was very convenient as our 10-month-old son could take a nap while we explored the sights.

Cathedral of Christ the Saviour Moscow

After the original Cathedral of Christ the Saviour was demolished by Stalin in 1931, a new version was completed in 2000.

The imposing building is the tallest Orthodox Christian church in the world (103 meters high), and is beautiful on the outside as well as on the inside.

Visiting the Cathedral is free of charge and it's open any day of the week from 10 am to 5 pm (except on Mondays when the opening hours are 1 to 5 pm).

When visiting the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour it's important to dress appropriately. For men, this means no shorts or tank tops.

Women can't enter with mini skirts or shorts, strap tops, or anything too revealing. Also, women are advised to cover their heads with a scarf as a sign of respect.

Inside the Cathedral photography isn't allowed, but believe me when I say there is plenty to see. There are beautiful frescoes, colorful icons, impressive statues, and other vivid decorations.

For a beautiful view over Moscow, walk up the stairs to the 40-meter high observation deck (entrance fee 400₽).

Visit Gorky Park

Gorky Park ice skating Moscow Russia

Helen from Holidays from Hels : Gorky Park, named after the Soviet writer Maxim Gorky, has recently undergone extensive regeneration to become Moscow's central leisure hub for young Muscovites.

Every day of the week you can find many Moscow residents strolling along the banks of the river in the summer, hiring bikes, picnicking on the grass, or dining at one of the many restaurants.

Open-air cinemas, petanque, and ping pong are all on offer. Not to be missed is the iconic white stone entranceway and museum, complete with columns carved with Soviet hammers and sickles.

In winter, look out for the ducks waddling across the frozen Moskva River, and watch boats attempting to navigate through the cracked ice. However, the real winter highlight is to try ice skating on one of the biggest rinks in Europe!

Ice skating in Gorky Park

The park’s maze of pedestrian pathways is transformed into one huge skating rink, which can play host to up to four thousand skaters.

Not surprisingly, Russians are talented ice skaters and there is a good chance you will find yourself next to a pirouetting ballerina.

Handily, you will find you will already be wearing most of what you need – gloves, hat, scarf, and thick socks and you can hire skates on-site. Lockers are included in the price if you don’t fancy skating with your day pack.

Disco tunes fill the air, and the whole arena is backlit in spectacular neon lights. Rest your weary legs and warm up at one of the cafes dotted along the frozen pathways, with the added bonus of not having to take off your skates.

Opening times

The rink is open from 10 am until 11 pm on weekdays and until midnight at weekends but closes between 3 and 5 pm. Like most attractions in Moscow, the rink is closed on Mondays.

The prices range from 350-650₽ and go up in the evening, which is the best time for the light show. Arriving at 5 pm, just as the rink opens for the evening session will give you time to find your ice legs before it fills up with more confident skaters.

Whilst waiting for the rink to open, try out the nearby tubing track where you can shoot down a snowy hill on an inflatable ring repeatedly for a very enjoyable half an hour!

How to get to Gorky Park by metro

The nearest metro is Park Kultury Station, on the other side of the river. As always, check out in advance what this looks like in the Russian Alphabet so you know when to get off!

Bolshoi Theatre

Bolshoi Theater Moscow

James Ian at Travel Collecting : one of the best places to go in Moscow is the famous Bolshoi Theater, located only a short walk from Red square. Bolshoy means big in Russian, and the theatre is not only big but also beautiful.

There are two ways to see the theater: on a guided tour or by watching a performance .

Take a guided tour

  • English tours are held on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 11:30 am. Tickets for these tours can be bought (on the same day) at the ticket office located in the Historic building of the theatre (door #12).
  • A ticket costs 2000₽ per person, tours last one hour, and the number of people on a tour is limited to a maximum of 20. The tour takes you inside the theater and to the historic main stage.

Watch a performance

My favorite way to see the theater, though, is to enjoy a performance and experience the theater as a patron.

The entrance is a little underwhelming when you first arrive, the street lobby is small and quite plain and you will be immediately directed up to your floor.

There are helpful attendants on each floor to guide you to the correct door. Arrive a little early and head up to the Grand Salon on the top floor where you can enjoy a glass of champagne while people-watching (Russians dress up for the theater).

Then head to your seat and take in the stunning theater before enjoying the famous Bolshoi Ballet or another performance.

Be sure to book a show at the historic stage, there is a modern stage as well but that isn't nearly as much fun.

Moscow itinerary day 3

Izmailovsky Market Moscow

Karen from WanderlustingK : one of the most interesting Moscow places to visit is the Izmailovsky Market .

This flea market and tourist attraction a bit outside of the tourist center is a recreation of a Tzar’s Palace, known as a Kremlin, produced in a colorful 16th-century style.

The market is filled with tiny stalls that sell everything from snacks to kitsch to authentic items from Soviet times such as hats, pins, and other pieces of memorabilia.

You'll also find authentic antiques such as vases, paintings, and other religious items if you're looking to splurge within the interior parts of the market.

Negotiating in English is not always possible as many vendors only speak Russian, so be sure to practice your Russian numbers and see how well you can do with haggling.

It's important to carry cash when you visit given that many vendors do not accept cards. We ended up purchasing a series of hats at the market, along with a beautiful hot tea glass with a metal holder with a typical Russian scene.

Elsewhere in the market, you’ll also find a few tourist shops that sell typical Russian products. It takes a few hours to see the market in full, so arrive early as the best items go quickly!

Hallway in Bunker 42 Moscow

Lindsey from Have Clothes, Will Travel : Bunker-42 was once a top-secret, Soviet military complex. Stalin commissioned its construction after the United States succeeded in creating a nuclear bomb.

An impressive 65 meters (or about 213 feet) underground, was the desired depth to protect Russia’s top officials from a nuclear attack.

Bunker 42 became operational in 1954. Fortunately, it was never needed for its true purpose, and instead it was used as the command center of strategic bombers for nearly 30 years.

Nowadays it's a museum dedicated to the Cold War and visiting is a truly unique experience!

You will need to join a tour in order to see the museum. You can call ahead to book your tour (the number is: +7 499 703-44-55), there are several English tours throughout the day that are held at 13:30, 16:30, and 18:30 (the price is 2200₽).

On Mondays, there is an extra tour at 17:30, which lasts an additional 30 minutes and costs 2800₽ per person. There is also the option to book a private tour. However, I am unsure of the price for this.

You will have to wait until exactly 15 minutes before your tour begins before you'll be admitted inside. After paying for your tickets and a quick restroom stop you will descend 65 meters underground…

Another option for visiting Bunker-42, if you would rather not do the tour, is to visit the restaurant inside Bunker-42. Actually, I highly recommend visiting the restaurant before or after a tour as well!

While the food is not that great, it’s worth visiting for a drink. The restaurant is also located within the bunker and is decorated in the old Soviet style.

From time to time there will be live performances and visiting Bunker 42 is definitely an experience worth having while in Moscow! After all, how many people can say they've had a drink in a top-secret Soviet military bunker?

If you’re visiting Moscow during peak season (June-July-August), it would be worth making a reservation, to avoid having to wait. Otherwise, I would not say you need to worry about a reservation at the restaurant.

Bunker-42 is a short cab ride away from Red Square (10-15 minutes). But I recommend taking the metro to get there. The closest station is Taganskaya, which is a beautiful metro station very much worth visiting.

Pedestrian boardwalk in Park Zaryad'ye (also called Zaryadye Park)

Park Zaryad'ye or Zaryadye Park is a lovely place for a stroll and a nice place to relax after a day of sightseeing in Moscow, especially when exploring Moscow with kids.

There are many things to see and do in this park, but I recommend starting your visit at The River Overlook , a 70-meter-long boardwalk with beautiful views over the river and the Kremlin.

Other interesting places to visit in Zaryadye Park are the Ice Cave, The Museum of Nature, and The Glass Crust. But most importantly, do as the Muscovites do and find yourself a nice place in the park to sit down and relax.

Enjoy the view, do some people-watching, and take a moment to think back about all the Moscow top sights you've seen in the past couple of days.

pampanga food trip 2023

Hotel National is potentially the best Moscow hotel. It's a gorgeous 5-star hotel located just a stone's throw away from the Bolshoi Theater, the Red Square, and the Kremlin.

The building was designed by architect Alexander Ivanov and completed in 1903 and has been welcoming international travelers ever since.

With its imperial architecture, luxury design, and charming classic rooms (some with a view of the Kremlin!), the Hotel National is a unique property.

Furthermore, you can enjoy an indoor pool, sauna, and fitness center as well as the well-reviewed Beluga restaurant that serves both Russian and European dishes.
