Top 10 Lisbon Beaches

Guide to the best beaches in lisbon - and the most beautiful.

Due to the variety of beaches on the different coastlines around Lisbon, it’s not easy deciding where to go for a day of sun, sea and sand. It always depends on whether you’re relying on public transportation or renting a car, and if you’re looking to just sunbathe, swim or surf. Below is a list of the best beaches in the region, taking into account their accessibility, crowd-pleasing characteristics or Instagram-worthy beauty.

1. Praia da Conceição

Praia da Conceição, Cascais

It’s the beach closest to the train station in Cascais, but it’s the calm waters and beautiful scenery that really brings the crowds of tourists and the local youth. It’s also conveniently found just outside the pedestrianized old center of town, and is the starting point of a continuous promenade that goes past a number of other beaches. If you’re looking for quiet moments by the sea and plenty of space to spread your towel, this is not the beach for you, but you’ll still want to make it your first stop on a beach-hopping day along the coast closest to the center of Lisbon.

Beach for : Swimming, Paddling, Walks by the sea Lifeguards : Yes Bathrooms : Yes Showers : Yes Rentals : Yes Bar or Restaurant : Yes Accessible : Yes Parking : Nearby Transportation : Train from Lisbon Time from the center of Lisbon : 45 minutes Visit Nearby : Condes de Castro Guimarães Palace-Museum Where to Stay : The Albatroz Hotel

2. Praia de Carcavelos

Praia de Carcavelos

There are other beaches even closer to the center of Lisbon, but this is the first one fully on the Atlantic (the others before it mix the waters of the river and the sea). It’s also the biggest, and currently the most popular with young tourists, thanks to its sports facilities that allow you to surf or play volleyball or beach soccer on the sand. It remains popular with locals, so expect crowds on weekends. During the official bathing season you’ll also find massage stands and plenty of spots for drinks and meals.

Beach for : Surfers, Sports Lifeguards : Yes Bathrooms : Yes Showers : Yes Rentals : Yes Bar or Restaurant : Yes Accessible : Yes Parking : Yes Transportation : Train from Lisbon Time from the center of Lisbon : 35 minutes Where to Stay : Riviera Hotel

See the Praia de Carcavelos Guide .

3. Costa da Caparica

Costa da Caparica

The longest stretch of sand of all the coastlines in the Lisbon region is divided into different beaches (although it’s really one long beach), some of them with trendy bars and others providing enough privacy for naturists. A tourist train connects the beaches in the summer season, going past the different bars and ending at the nudist section and Lisbon’s “gay beach.” The bars are also the places to be at night, serving cocktails to the sounds of live DJs. Surprisingly, it attracts few tourists, but it’s the top choice of the people of Lisbon for a day by the sea.

Beach for : Surfers, Kitesurfers, Nightlife, Naturists Lifeguards : Yes Bathrooms : Yes Showers : Yes Rentals : Yes Bar or Restaurant : Yes Accessible : Yes Parking : Yes Transportation : Bus or Ferry+Bus Time from the center of Lisbon : It’s just 20 minutes by car but about 45 minutes to 1 hour by public transportation Where to Stay : Tryp Lisboa Caparica Mar or Aroeira Lisbon Hotel

4. Praia do Guincho

Praia do Guincho, Cascais

Beach for : Surfers, Windsurfers, Foodies Lifeguards : Yes Bathrooms : Yes Showers : Yes Rentals : Yes Bar or Restaurant : Yes Accessible : No Parking : Yes Transportation : Train from Lisbon + Bus from Cascais Time from the center of Lisbon : Just over 1 hour Visit Nearby : Boca do Inferno Where to Stay : Hotel Fortaleza do Guincho

5. Praia do Ribeiro do Cavalo

Praia do Ribeiro do Cavalo, Sesimbra

It’s not easy to get to, and was once a well-guarded secret, but this beach is now a popular adventure for Lisbonites and tourists. That’s because it involves following a trail down a cliff, but it’s one of Portugal’s most beautiful beaches (it’s certainly the most stunning in the Lisbon region). Because of the difficult access, it tends to only attract young crowds, who then spend their time taking selfies in the calm waters , with a backdrop that looks more like Thailand than Europe.

Beach for : Swimming, Couples, Instagram Lifeguards : No Bathrooms : No Showers : No Rentals : No Bar or Restaurant : No Accessible : No Parking : Yes Transportation : Bus + Walk Time from the center of Lisbon : It’s 50 minutes by car followed by a 20-minute hike, but if you’re relying on public transportation, it’s 1 hour and 15 minutes by bus + 30-minute walk + 20-minute hike. Where to Stay : Hotel do Mar

See the Praia do Ribeiro do Cavalo Guide .

6. Praia do Creiro

Praia do Creiro Beach, Arrábida

It’s the most popular beach on the most beautiful coastline in the Lisbon region, and if it were closer to the city, it would be where everyone would go for a day by the sea. It has calm, crystal-clear waters and a landscape that makes it look like an island in the Indian Ocean, despite the Mediterranean vegetation and the Atlantic waters. It’s within walking distance of three other similar beaches, so it’s an opportunity to experience four beautiful beaches in one day.

Beach for : Swimming, Couples, Families, Instagram Lifeguards : Yes Bathrooms : Yes Showers : No Rentals : Yes Bar or Restaurant : Yes Accessible : No Parking : Yes Transportation : Train + Bus Time from the center of Lisbon : It’s about 1 hour by car, but the train+bus journey can take 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours. Where to Stay : Casa da Adôa

See the Praia do Creiro Guide .

7. Praia dos Galapinhos

Praia dos Galapinhos, Arrábida

It’s one of the three beaches easily accessible from Praia to Creiro listed above, and was once considered Europe’s most beautiful . Voters were obviously impressed by the views of its crystal-clear waters and pristine landscape, and it’s in fact postcard-perfect. It’s never too crowded and the water is always calm, so it’s the ideal destination for a relaxing day by the sea.

Beach for : Swimming, Couples, Instagram Lifeguards : Yes Bathrooms : No Showers : No Rentals : Yes Bar or Restaurant : Yes Accessible : No Parking : No Transportation : Train + Bus Time from the center of Lisbon : Just like Praia do Creiro above, it’s about 1 hour by car, but by public transportation it’s about 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours. Where to Stay : Hotel Casa Palmela

See the Praia dos Galapinhos Guide .

8. Praia da Ursa

Praia da Ursa, Sintra

Europe’s westernmost beach is located halfway between Sintra and Cascais, below a cape that marks the westernmost spot of mainland Europe. You don’t need to be a hiker or a mountain climber to reach it, but it requires some patience and effort, as you have to follow a trail down a cliff. The sense of adventure and the magnificent all-natural scenery of sea stacks make it one of the most memorable and rewarding experiences on the Lisbon coast. It’s a stunningly beautiful and romantic place, and if its waves weren’t usually so ferocious (and therefore forbidding swimming), it would probably be one of Lisbon’s favorite beaches.

Beach for : Naturism, Couples, Instagram Lifeguards : No Bathrooms : No Showers : No Rentals : No Bar or Restaurant : No Accessible : No Parking : Nearby Transportation : Train from Lisbon + Bus from Cascais or Sintra Time from the center of Lisbon : 45 minutes by car or 1 hour and 25 minutes by public transportation (40 minutes by train + 25 minutes by bus + 20-minute hike) Visit Nearby : Cabo da Roca Where to Stay : Charm Nature

See the Praia da Ursa Guide .

9. Praia da Rainha

Praia da Rainha, Cascais

If you’re looking for a perfectly-scenic Instagram beach with easy access to the city, this is it. It’s quite small, but it’s Cascais at its prettiest, nestled between rocks facing the harbor and with crystal-clear waters . After a day in the sun, head up the steps to the terrace that overlooks the beach, and take a selfie with the beautiful scenery as backdrop. It’s conveniently located in the pedestrianized center of Cascais, just a short walk from the train station.

Beach for : Swimming, Couples, Families/Children, Instagram Lifeguards : Yes Bathrooms : Yes Showers : Yes Rentals : Yes Bar or Restaurant : Yes Accessible : No Parking : Nearby Transportation : Train from Lisbon Time from the center of Lisbon : 45 minutes Visit Nearby : Casa de Santa Maria Where to Stay : Hotel Baia

See the Praia da Rainha Guide .

Troia

Although officially outside the Lisbon region, this peninsula is one long magnificent sandy beach that can be a wonderful day trip from the capital. Getting there is part of the fun, as it involves taking a scenic ferry. It’s the starting point of Portugal’s longest uninterrupted stretch of sand, and offers plenty of space and seclusion in miles of dunes with views of the Arrábida Natural Park.

Beach for : Couples, Families Lifeguards : Yes Bathrooms : Yes Showers : No Rentals : Yes Bar or Restaurant : Yes Accessible : No Parking : Yes Transportation : Train + Ferry Time from the center of Lisbon : 90 minutes (about 1 hour for train + 15-minute walk to ferry station + 15-minute ferry crossing) Where to Stay : Troia Design Hotel or Troia Residence

See the Troia Guide .

5 OTHER GREAT BEACHES THAT YOU’LL WANT TO CONSIDER:

Praia da Adraga

Praia da Adraga, Sintra

Largely considered one of Lisbon’s (and, according to The Times , even one of Europe’s) most beautiful beaches, this is a wild beach dotted with dark rocks . Because there’s no direct public transportation, it’s mostly free of tourists, but its natural beauty has begun to attract an increasing number of locals. On the quieter days there’s enough seclusion for naturists, but can be quite crowded on weekends.

Beach for : Couples, Instagram Lifeguards : Yes Bathrooms : Yes Showers : Yes Rentals : No Bar or Restaurant : Yes Accessible : Yes Parking : Yes Transportation : Train from Lisbon + Bus from Sintra + Walk Time from the center of Lisbon : 45 minutes by car or nearly 90 minutes by public transportation (37 minutes for train + 28 minutes for bus + 20-minute walk) Where to Stay : Penha Longa Resort

See the Praia da Adraga Guide .

Praia do Tamariz

Praia do Tamariz, Estoril

Overlooked by a castle and found just across the road from Europe’s largest casino , this was Lisbon’s postcard beach in the mid-20th century. It remains one of the most popular, thanks to the many hotels nearby, plus the good facilities, beach bars, and the location by a train station.

Beach for : Drinks in the sun; Instagram Lifeguards : Yes Bathrooms : Yes Showers : Yes Rentals : Yes Bar or Restaurant : Yes Accessible : Yes Parking : Nearby Transportation : Train Time from the center of Lisbon : 35 minutes Visit Nearby : Casino Estoril Where to Stay : Palácio Estoril Hotel

See the Praia do Tamariz Guide .

Praia Grande

Praia Grande, Sintra

It’s the largest beach on the Sintra coast, and features well-preserved dinosaur footprints on its tall cliffs , plus what is said to be Europe’s largest seawater swimming pool . It attracts a mostly local, young and sporty crowd, which surfs or drinks at the bars facing the sea, even outside the official bathing season.

Beach for : Surfers Lifeguards : Yes Bathrooms : Yes Showers : Yes Rentals : Yes Bar or Restaurant : Yes Accessible : Yes Parking : Yes Transportation : Train from Lisbon + Bus from Sintra Time from the center of Lisbon : About 1 hour and 15 minutes (37 minutes for the train and about 35 minutes for the bus -- but note that the bus is rather infrequent, so allow some time for the connection) Where to Stay : Arribas Sintra Hotel

See the Praia Grande Guide .

Meco

This rather wild beach, protected by cliffs and a pine forest, is Portugal’s most famous nude beach . It’s also one of the trendiest in the Lisbon region, thanks to its restaurant that has attracted local bohemians (the first to sunbathe in their birthday suits here in the 1980s) for decades. The water is usually too rough for swimming, but the dunes and the relaxed atmosphere are perfect for a day in the sun.

Beach for : Couples, Naturists Lifeguards : Yes Bathrooms : Yes Showers : Yes Rentals : Yes Bar or Restaurant : Yes Accessible : Yes Parking : Yes Transportation : Car only Time from the center of Lisbon : 50 minutes Where to Stay : Casal do Frade

See the Meco Guide .

Praia da Califórnia

Praia da Califórnia, Sesimbra

No, it has no links to the American state and it’s said that this location already had this name before the colonization of what is now the United States (“califórnia” in Portuguese means a deep cave). Located between cliffs and a 17th-century fort, it’s one of two beaches in the center of the fishing town of Sesimbra. It can get quite crowded in the summer, when it attracts families from the region, but with so many other beaches closer to Lisbon it’s not usually part of tourists’ itineraries. Still, it should be considered on an extended stay in the Portuguese capital, especially if you prefer calm waters (as opposed to surfing waves) and enjoy fresh fish and seafood (there are several restaurants on the promenade leading to this beach).

Beach for : Swimming, Families, Seafood lovers Lifeguards : Yes Bathrooms : Yes Showers : Yes Rentals : Yes Bar or Restaurant : Yes Accessible : Yes Parking : Yes Transportation : Bus Time from the center of Lisbon : 1 hour and 15 minutes Where to Stay : Sesimbra Hotel & Spa

See the Praia da Califórnia Guide .

Frequently-Asked Questions About Lisbon Beaches

How far is the beach from lisbon and which are the beaches near the city center.

The first real sandy beach is just 6 kilometers (or less than 4 miles) from Lisbon (from the Belém district). From downtown, it’s about 14 kilometers or just over 8.5 miles. That beach is Caxias , which mixes the water of the Tagus River and the Atlantic. The first Atlantic beach is Carcavelos, which is about 20 kilometers (12.5 miles) from downtown and 12 kilometers (7.5 miles) from western Lisbon (Belém). Caxias is about 20 minutes by car from downtown Lisbon and 16 minutes by train (Cais do Sodré Station), or just 8 minutes by train and 10 minutes by car from Belém. Carcavelos is about 30 minutes by car from central Lisbon or 25 minutes by train, or 20 minutes by car or train from Belém.

Can you Swim in the Sea in Lisbon?

You can definitely swim in Lisbon, but should only do so in areas watched by lifeguards, as some beaches have strong currents and rocks hidden under the surface. Take a look at the warning flags on arrival (they’re usually by the lifeguard stand) -- red means you’re prohibited from swimming, yellow tells you to be careful when swimming, and green means it’s a good swimming day.

Lisbon Beaches Water Temperature

The water temperature on the Lisbon coast is between 15 and 20 degrees celsius (60 to 68 Fahrenheit) in the summer . It’s definitely the Atlantic and not the Mediterranean, and more California than the Carribean. The beaches with the highest temperatures, which average between 17C and 20C (63F and 68F) are those of Cascais. In Sintra it’s usually around 15C (60F), in Costa da Caparica about 16C (61F), and in Arrábida and Sesimbra it can range between 15C and 19C (60F and 66F). The coldest waters are usually in Arrábida.

When is the Bathing Season and the Best Time to Go to the Beach in Lisbon?

The official bathing season in the Cascais coastline is May 1st to October 15th, while in Caparica it’s from June 1st to the 30th of September, and in Sintra and Arrábida it’s between June 15th and September 15th. However, although you have no lifeguards or sunbeds for rent outside the official season, you may still have pleasant beach days as early as April and as late as late October, when there may be a few rainy days but it may also still feel like summer. The busiest months are July and August, when many locals on vacation join the tourists and there are usually no rainy days. The best times to enjoy a day at the beach on the Lisbon coast are late June and early September, if you want clear blue skies without the crowds. If you can, avoid a beach day on a weekend, when the entire population of Lisbon seems to head to the shore.

How to Get to Lisbon Beaches by Public Transport

All beaches on the coasts around Lisbon are connected to the city center by public transportation, except those in Arrábida (you have to connect to buses in the city of Setúbal). For Cascais, take the commuter train from Cais do Sodré, for Costa da Caparica you have different bus options, and for Sintra you take a train and then a bus (we provide detailed information about transportation on the guides to each beach). Try to keep coins handy, as some smaller train stations on the Cascais line don’t have ticket counters and you must use machines. If you have the Lisboa Card , you may travel for free on the trains to Cascais (which also stop in Carcavelos and Estoril), Sintra and Setúbal -- it’s not valid on the buses to the other coasts.

Lisbon Beaches: Do’s, Don’ts and Where To Go

When the first signs of summer appear, going to the beach immediately becomes part of everyone’s plans in lisbon..

The best Lisbon beaches aren’t in the city but are a short trip away. Jump on a car, a train, or a ferry, and you’ll be soaking up the sun faster than you realize it. Follow Devour Lisbon’s tips on what to do and not to do at the beach, and check out the five top spots around the city to go for a swim.

Discover the top Lisbon beaches and our tips for enjoying them like a local.

The Best Way to Enjoy the Lisbon Beaches

Not all stretches of sand by the water constitute a beach in Lisbon. That means that the riverside of the Tagus from Cais das Colunas near Terreiro do Paço to Cais do Sodré is not a place for stripping to your swimsuit to sunbathe nor swim, no matter how appealing it looks.

Beach season officially starts at the beginning of June, but the warm weather typically comes sooner. The water might be too cold for a dip and most beaches don’t have lifeguards working before the season starts, but you can still go for some sunbathing.

The best local snack to eat at a Lisbon beach is a bola de Berlim , no questions asked. Even if you think a deep-fried dough, cream-filled pastry is not the ideal treat to eat at a beach just go with the flow. Bolas de Berlim are the beach version of Lisbon street food and vendors are one of the hallmarks of the season in Lisbon.

The Five Best Beaches Near Lisbon

From the Cais do Sodré train station to the nearest beach is a 30-minute trip. Praia de São Pedro do Estoril , Carcavelos , and Cascais are perfect if your Lisbon itinerary must include one beach day. The proximity of these urban beaches to the city center is great for mobility but not so good if you want to avoid crowds, especially in the peak beach season between June and September. The best way to have a guaranteed quiet time is to go in the mornings, on weekdays.

2. Barreiro

Barreiro is a former industrial city on the Southbank of the Tagus River, 20 minutes from Lisbon by ferry. For years, Lisboans saw no appeal in this place that always seemed to be engulfed in factory smoke. But those days are long gone. Although Barreiro is not the first place that comes to mind when you think of Lisbon beaches, Praia da Alburrica is worth crossing the river. The family-friendly river beach is a short 10-minute walk from the ferry boat station.

3. Costa da Caparica

In the summer, all locals roam south to Costa da Caparica . The popular beach area is also the location for one of the top summer music festivals in the main Lisbon area, Sol da Caparica. With dozens of beaches stretching for almost 15 miles, space is not an issue. All frequent beachgoers will have a say at which one is the best, but Praia da Sereia (also known for the local café’s name, Waikiki) frequently makes the lists of the best Lisbon beaches for its family-friendly atmosphere.

While a windy beach may ruin the day for some, for surfers it means time well spent riding the waves. That’s what the beaches at Guincho are: the perfect location to surf, kitesurf, and windsurf, less than 40 minutes from Lisbon. Surfers of all ages and expertise levels roam here all year.

5. Sesimbra

A 45-minute drive from Lisbon, Sesimbra is the perfect beach destination for weekend trips. It’s probably off the scope of a Lisbon beach, but it’s worth the trip for the picturesque town and the fresh seafood restaurants steps away from the sand—a great excuse to stay for dinner. There are options for all budgets and all culinary tastes, but they all source their fish locally.

Sesimbra is one of the best hidden gems when it comes to Lisbon beaches.

Lisbon Beaches

The 6 best beaches near lisbon.

Latest update: July 24, 2023

In a nutshell: Lisbon’s beaches

  • Lisbon is practically right by the sea, and you can easily get to some stunning beaches from the city center.
  • Our top pick for a beach close to Lisbon’s center is Praia de Carcavelos.
  • For beautiful beaches surrounded by nature , check out Praia da Ursa, Galapinhos, and Praia do Guincho.

That’s our brief overview of Lisbon’s best beaches. In our article, we’ll introduce you to the 6 most beautiful beaches near Lisbon in more detail. We’ll give you recommendations for beach hotels and show you how to get to the beaches near Lisbon.

Map of the best beaches near Lisbon

To give you a better idea of where the Lisbon beaches are located, we’ve put them on a map for you.

Map of the beaches near Lisbon

Carcavelos: Beautiful beach very close to the center of Lisbon

Carcavelos beach near Lisbon

Praia de Carcavelos is the closest and easiest to reach beach from the center of Lisbon. And despite being so close to the city, it’s actually quite beautiful!

You can explore the highlights of Lisbon in the morning and then spend the afternoon lounging on the beach.

Carcavelos beach is approximately 1.5 kilometers long and very wide, giving you plenty of space to lay your towel out on the soft sand .

However, it’s often quite windy as the beach is not very sheltered. You can see that in the waves, which attract many surfers all year round. The beach is also a great spot for beginner surfers , and you can book surfing lessons there.

Book a surfing lesson in Carcavelos

Getting to Carcavelos:

From Cais do Sodré station, take the train towards Cascais and get off at Carcavelos station. The trip takes about 20 minutes. From there, it’s about a 15-minute walk to the beach.

The Cais do Sodré station is located below Bairro Alto, directly on the Tagus River. You can reach it by taking the Metro Linha Verde or walking from the city center.

Our hotel recommendation in Carcavelos:

The ABLA Guest House is only a six-minute walk from the beach and offers comfortable rooms and a lovely garden with an outdoor pool.

Praia do Tamariz: Sheltered beach near Cascais

Praia do Tamariz near Cascais

Located just before the beautiful town of Cascais, which is a popular day trip destination from Lisbon , you’ll find the beach Praia do Tamariz.

It’s perfect if you are in Lisbon with children , as it is sheltered in a bay and less windy, making the water calmer. However, the beach is quite small, and in high season, it can quickly get crowded.

You only need to walk five minutes from the train station to reach Praia do Tamariz.

Getting to Praia do Tamariz:

Take the same train from Cais do Sodré as you would to Carcavelos, and after about 40 minutes, get off at Estoril station. From there, it’s a short five-minute walk to the beach.

Our hotel recommendation for Praia do Tamariz:

The luxurious InterContinental Cascais-Estoril hotel is only a few minutes’ walk from the beach and offers sensational views of the sea, a beautiful pool, and spacious rooms.

Guincho Beach: Lisbon's Surfer Paradise

Praia do Guincho

This bay is perfect for windsurfing when there’s very strong wind and less swell. When the waves are higher, the area is great for experienced surfers . It isn’t ideal for beginner surfing though.

Located northwest of Cascais, Praia do Guincho is a beautiful natural beach surrounded by the mountains of Sintra.

Due to the strong winds , this beach is not that great for relaxing, but it’s perfect for taking some beautiful photos of the landscape or going for a walk and feeling the force of the wind and waves.

Getting to Praia do Guincho:

Take the train from Cais do Sodré to Cascais , which takes about 40 minutes. From there, take the M15 bus and travel for about 25 minutes until you reach the Praia do Guincho stop.

Our hotel recommendation for Praia do Guincho:

The 5-star Boutique Hotel Fortaleza do Guincho Relais & Châteaux is located directly on the beach and has a restaurant that has been awarded a Michelin star.

Ursa Beach: Between Dramatic Cliffs

The impressive Praia da Ursa near Sintra

It’s hidden between dramatic cliffs to the west of Sintra. Not many tourists venture here, making it a true secret spot .

You’ll need good footwear to make your way down to the beach and some endurance to get back up, but this little adventure is totally worth it.

Since not many people go down to the beach, you’ll have plenty of peace and quiet to take amazing photos of the impressive cliffs .

By the way : If going down to the beach seems too strenuous, you can still take great photos of the cliffs from above.

Getting to Praia da Ursa:

Take the train to Cascais until the last station (about 40 minutes). Transfer to bus 403 to the Azoia – Chafariz stop (about 30 minutes). Alternatively, take the train from Rossio to Sintra (about 30 minutes), then take the 403 bus to the same stop.

From Azoia – Chafariz, it’s about a 40-minute walk to Praia da Ursa.

As you can see, getting there is not easy. It’s much faster by car . We recommend combining your beach visit with a trip to Sintra or Cascais and staying there overnight.

Our hotel recommendation for Praia da Ursa:

The Chalet Saudade hotel is located directly in Sintra, just a few meters from the bus station . The lovely rooms are tastefully furnished, and the breakfast is world-class.

Costa da Caparica: Local's Beach in Lisbon

Panorama on the Costa da Caparica

On the other side of the Tagus River, near the Cristo Rei statue, there’s a 26-kilometer long coast called Costa da Caparica with several nice sandy beaches .

The further you go from Lisbon to spread out your towel on the beaches of Costa de Caparica, the less touristy it gets. Mostly locals hang out at these beaches in Lisbon.

It’s usually windy at the beaches here, making it perfect for surfing .

Getting to Costa da Caparica:

It’s a 10-minute bus ride from the city center to Alcântara – Av. 24 Julho (lines 714, 728, 732, 760).

Then, about a 5-minute walk to the Lisboa (Alcântara) Avª Ceuta Fte Banco) stop. From there, take line 153 or 161 to the Costa Caparica (Avª Dr Aresta Branco) stop – it takes about 25 minutes.

You can then reach several beach sections of Costa da Caparica in just a few minutes on foot.

Our hotel recommendation for Costa da Caparica:

If you’re looking for a cool hotel, check out Quinta Tagus . It’s a great place for a beach holiday in Lisbon. The hotel is located between Costa Caparica and the Christ statue, with a breathtaking view of Lisbon.

Galapinhos: Crystal clear water in a peaceful natural landscape

The dream beach Galapinhos near Lisbon

Last but not least, we want to show you the beach that is not only one of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal, but also won the title of best beach in Europe by the European Best Destinations portal in 2017: Galapinhos.

It is located south of Lisbon, near the town of Setúbal in the Arrábida Natural Park .

Galapinhos is situated in a bay, which is why the water is usually calm and crystal clear , making it perfect for snorkeling .

The only catch: Without a car, this beach near Lisbon is not that easy to reach.

Getting to Galapinhos beach:

From Rossio, take the train to Sintra and get off at Campolide after about three minutes. There you take the train towards Setúbal (travel time about 50 minutes).

In Setúbal at the train station, get off and take the bus Linha 4472 to Praia da Galapinhos . From there, several footpaths lead down to the beach, all of which are easily walkable if you are sure-footed .

Our hotel recommendation for Galapinhos:

We recommend spending at least one night in Setúbal , as you will then have enough time to get to the beach and explore the beautiful Arrábida Natural Park. For this, we recommend the Rio Art Hotel – directly by the sea in Setúbal.

While everyone’s interests vary, some may argue to skip the Elevador de Santa Justa due to its long queues. It’s beautiful to look at, but you can get similar views from other miradouros (viewpoints) in Lisbon, such as the Miradouro da Senhora do Monte, without the wait or the fee.

What is the best way to explore Lisbon?

The best way to explore Lisbon is a mix of walking and using public transportation. Lisbon’s neighborhoods are filled with steep hills and narrow streets, perfect for exploring on foot.

However, for longer distances or to reach certain attractions like Belém, using the efficient tram, bus, or metro system is recommended.

Is Lisbon a walkable city?

Absolutely — Lisbon is a highly walkable city. Its neighborhoods are compact, offering an array of beautiful sights, historic landmarks, and cultural experiences. However, keep in mind that Lisbon’s charming streets are often steep and cobbled, so comfortable shoes are a must!

A Guide To The Lisbon Coast

The Lisbon Coast is a sensational stretch of golden beaches, wave-lashed cliffs and vibrant seaside towns – but there’s more to the Atlantic coastline than that. Delve beneath the surface to discover hidden coves, family-owned seafood restaurants and pristine natural parks. Costa da Caparica is the favoured escape of in-the-know locals, Cascais and Estoril are refined seaside enclaves, and Sintra is a destination plucked straight from a fairytale, while the wilder Parque Natural da Arrábida coastline offers an off-the-grid alternative. With some of the best beaches in Lisbon , and some truly luxurious villas , the Atlantic coast is the perfect getaway.

Portugal is a great year-round destination, with over 3000 hours of annual sunlight. July and August are the hottest months, but also the busiest. The best time to visit Lisbon is May and June or early to mid-September, when it’s warm and not too congested.

How to get there

Palacio de Monserrate, Sintra, guide to lisbon coast

Palacio de Monserrate, Sintra, Portugal

British Airways, easyJet and TAP Portugal fly direct between the UK and Lisbon Airport. The airport is a 30-minute bus ride or 20-minute taxi journey from the city centre. Cascais and Estoril are a 30-minute train journey from Cais do Sodré station, while Sintra is 40 minutes from Rossio station. We recommend hiring a car to explore the more remote parts of Sintra and Serra da Arrábida.

Why go to the Lisbon coast?

Parque Natural da Arrábida Lisbon Coast

Parque Natural da Arrábida

To make the most of the Lisbon food scene, you need to try fresh seafood on the coast – and Sintra is the best place to do so. Feast on clams in white wine at the ocean-view Restaurante da Adraga ; taste local speciality percebes (goose barnacles) at cliff-side Azenhas do Mar ; or share a platter of sea bass, bream, mussels and prawns at Mar do Inferno .

Natural parks

Walkers will love Parque Natural de Sintra-Cascais, where hiking trails carve through Serra de Sintra, a craggy mountain range stretching to Cabo da Roca. Further south, the forest-cloaked slopes of Parque Natural da Arrábida conceal polecats, badgers, buzzards and eagles. It’s our favourite hiking spot, and you can go mountain climbing or diving too.

The Lisbon Coast beaches are among the finest in Portugal, from remote bays like Praia dos Galapinhos in Parque Natural Arrábida, to sun-kissed stretches such as Praia da Conceição. For the best beaches in Lisbon though, head to Sintra where you’ll discover glorious swathes of sand and crystalline waters.

Estoril sheltered refugees during World War Two, with the likes of Salvador Dalí and Antoine de Saint-Exupéry holing up in Hotel Palácio. Europe’s exiled royalty rubbed shoulders with spies in Casino Estoril – the inspiration behind Ian Fleming’s Casino Royale.

Surfing and windsurfing

The strong southerly swell makes the Lisbon coastline a great surfing and windsurfing destination. Our top choices include Praia da Carcavelos, Praia da Guincho and Costa da Caparica.

Hidden gems

Praia da Adraga Lisbon Coast

Praia da Adraga in Sintra

  • Framed by huge rocks, Praia da Adraga is the most beautiful beach in Sintra. Unexpectedly, this secluded bay is undeveloped and has fewer crowds than neighbouring Praia das Maçãs and Praia Grande. Visit at sunset when the cliffs burn amber and the sand appears to glow.
  • Serra da Arrábida is a little off the tourist trail, with surprisingly few visitors to its stunning natural park – head inland for hikes where you’re unlikely to cross paths with another soul.
  • Once a sacred site, the Neolithic ruins of Adrenunes are hidden down an overgrown track, near Sintra. They offer panoramic views of the untouched countryside, coastline and, just beyond, Cascais and Lisbon.
  • Parque Natural da Arrábida is home to some of the wilder Lisbon beaches. Our pick of the bunch is Praia dos Galapinhos , an under-the-radar cove beach with calm waters and pristine sands.

Where to visit on the Lisbon coast

Praia do Tamariz in Estoril lisbon Coast

The golden Praia do Tamariz in Estoril at sunset

With its turreted villas and grand hotels, Estoril was once the glamorous playground of the rich and famous. Today it’s a well-heeled resort with bars and restaurants clustered around palm-fringed parks. Praia do Tamariz is a popular swimming spot, while the coastal promenade to neighbouring Cascais is great for sunset strolls.

Cascais has been a coveted summer retreat ever since King Luís stayed here in 1870. The culture-rich resort is home to fine mansions, small galleries, museums and a historic old town. It’s livelier than Estoril and the beaches are ideal for active visitors: rent paddleboards at Praia da Conceição, or catch a wave at Guincho – one of the finest surfing beaches in Portugal.

Costa da Caparica

On the southern side of the river, Costa da Caparica is a popular beach getaway for Lisbonites. The former fishing village still has colourful boats bobbing in the water and local fishermen selling their catch of the day to river-facing seafood restaurants. Today, a cluster of late-night bars creates more of a buzz. A little train travels along the 10km coastline, calling at different beaches – the further south you head, the fewer the crowds.

North of Lisbon, Sintra has long been an exclusive retreat for Portuguese royalty – and it’s easy to see why. Soaring cliffs plunge to sandy coves, while, inland, forest-cloaked hills shelter ancient castles. The UNESCO-listed town centre is filled with pastel-hued mansions and ornate palaces. Be sure to head to Cabo da Roca, a craggy headland and lighthouse looming over wave-lashed cliffs – the westernmost point in mainland Europe. Visit at sunset for incredible views.

Serra da Arrábida coastline

Toward Sétubal is Serra da Arrábida, where forested slopes tumble down to sugar-white beaches. This corner of the UNESCO-protected Parque Natural da Arrábida has surprisingly few visitors – yet the most glorious of Lisbon beaches. Our favourite is Praia dos Galapinhos, with its calm, jewel-toned waters and flour-soft sand, near the tiny harbour village of Portinho da Arrábida.

1) Sintra - the best day trip from Lisbon

Why? Whimsical palaces and opulent villas all set in the hills of the Serra de Sintra Highlight: Palácio Nacional da Pena, Quinta da Regaleira, Palácio Nacional de Sintra How to travel there: Train, 30 minutes Typical visit length: 7 hours (there are enough sights for 2 days of sightseeing) Tourism level in the peak season: Incredibly crowded

Sintra is a picturesque town nestled within the cooling hills of the Serra de Sintra. This region was a favourite with the Portuguese nobility, and within the town you’ll find grand palaces, ruinous castles and opulent 19th-century mansions.

The standout attraction is the beautiful Palácio Nacional da Pena, with its vivid yellow and red towers rising up from the lush greens of the surrounding forests. Other popular sights include the gothic Palácio Nacional de Sintra, and the Quinta da Regaleira, with its hidden pathways below the gardens.

There are so many sights in Sintra that a second day is needed to visit the ruins of the Moors castle, Monserrate Palace, the Palácio de Seteais and the hill trails around the Vila Sassetti.

Sintra is the best day trip from Lisbon, but it unfortunately struggles with the sheer number of tourists. Tourist insight: For your day trip, head to Sintra early in the day and pre-purchase tickets to avoid standing in long queues. 2) Cascais - the best beach town day trip from Lisbon

Why? The Lisbon coastline’s premier resort town Highlight: Guimarães villa, Cabo da Roca, Cascais fort and beaches How to travel there: Train 40 minutes Typical visit length: 5 hours Tourism level in the peak season: Busy

Historically, Cascais was the summer retreat for the Portuguese nobility, and today, it is the premier beach town of the Lisbon coastline.

The town elegantly blends, it's fishing heritage, grand 19th-century architecture, and glorious beaches, to create a wonderful holiday destination. Cascais is equally suited for a day trip; there are grand villas, carefully maintained parks and a selection of fascinating museums.

To the north of Cascais are the Boca do Inferno cliff formation and the Cabo da Roca, the most westerly point of mainland Europe. In the summer, there is a vibrant holiday atmosphere around Cascais, and an extensive selection of bars and restaurants provides a buzzing nightlife. Have you booked your hotel yet?

During the peak season, demand for hotels and accommodation in Lisbon is very high. It is recommended that you book your accommodation as early as possible to secure the best prices.

The map below shows the location of hotels and rental rooms in Lisbon. By altering the date to suit your trip, the map will display current availability and prices:

Why? The quintessential Portuguese walled town Highlight: City walls, charming side streets How to travel there: Bus (40 minutes) Typical visit length: 2 hours Tourism level in the peak season: Very busy between 10am-3pm with coach tours

Obidos is one of Portugal’s most picturesque towns. The town was given to Queen Urraca in 1210 as a wedding gift and, up until the fall of the monarchy in 1910, Obidos was owned by the Queen of Portugal.

There could not have been a more delightful town to be a patron of, with its traditional painted houses lining the cobbled streets, leading up to the medieval castle. Obidos may be small, but every single street is delightful.

Obidos does get very busy with coach tours but it is easy to leave the main streets, and wander the quiet side streets or ancient city walls. Tourist insight: While in Obidos, don’t miss having a drink of Ginja - a sweet alcoholic drink served in a chocolate cup. Related articles: Obidos guide - Lisbon to Obidos

Why? Real Portugal, away from the tourists Highlight: Fortress São Filipe, Mercado do Livramento Península de Troia How to travel there: Train (30 minutes) Typical visit length: 4 hours + 2 hours for Troia Lots of tourists in the summer? Few foreign tourists

Setubal is a major port and industrial town but has a surprising amount to see and do for a day trip. At the centre of Setubal is a charming old town, while the pretty waterfront opens out onto the Sado Estuary. This busy waterway overlooks the Tróia Peninsula and is home to a pod of bottlenose dolphins.

The main sights of Setubal include the Mercado do Livramento, the best fish market in Portugal, and the Fortaleza de Sao Filipe, which stands high above the city. For your day trip, it is possible to catch the ferry to the Tróia Peninsula and spend time on the region's beautiful beaches. Setubal is not one of the common day trips from Lisbon but is a great place to experience modern, authentic Portugal. Related articles: Setubal guide

5 - Evora day trip

Why? Historic capital of the Alentejo region, many historic buildings Highlight: Roman Temple, Bone Chapel and Gothic Cathedral How to travel there: Train (1 hour) Typical visit length: 5 hours Lots of tourists in the summer? Moderately busy

Evora lies at the heart of the Alentejo, a region of rolling plains and olive trees, that swelters under the intense summer sun. Evora has an extensive history, being an important Roman trading town, a defensive stronghold for the Moors and major religious centre in the 13/14th century.

This varied past has left an assortment of fascinating attractions including a Roman temple, an impressive aqueduct and a creepy bone chapel. There is a lot to see in Evora, and the city has the second-highest number of national monuments in Portugal, second only to Lisbon.

Tourist advice: It’s a long train ride to and from Evora, so you may wish to spend a night instead of a rushed day trip. Our opinion: We only ranked Evora at number 5 due to the travel considerations, if these were discounted it would be at number 2. Related articles: Evora guide – Lisbon to Evora

How about a small group tour?

One of the best ways to discover Lisbon and to meet fellow travellers is to join a guided tour. We have worked with Getyourguide.com for the last six years, and some of the best tours of Lisbon include:

Why? Traditional beach town, famed for its winter waves Highlight: Praia do Norte surfing area, Sitio district, beach How to travel there: bus 60min Typical visit length: 4 hours Lots of tourists in the summer? Yes, but not over crowed

Nazaré is a delightful beach town which exudes Portuguese charm. The town is set along one of the finest beaches of central Portugal, and the beachfront is lined with traditional beach cafes, shops and hotels.

High above the town is the historic Sitio district, which leads down to the fort and the famed Praia do Norte surfing beach. During the winter, massive waves (up to 30m) are formed off the Sitio headland and daredevil surfers attempt to surf these colossal waves. Our opinion: Nazaré is a pleasant location for a day trip which combines both an outstanding beach and an enjoyable town. Related articles: Nazaré introduction

Nazaré beach

7 - Sesimbra day trip

Why? Where the Portuguese go on holiday Highlight: Cabo Espichel, Castelo de Sesimbra, Parque Natural da Arrábida (car needed) How to travel there: bus 40min Typical visit length: 3 hours (with car 6 hours) Lots of tourists in the summer? yes

Sesimbra is a favourite holiday destination with the Portuguese. The town may not have a vast number of tourist attractions, but the authentic Portuguese atmosphere, beautiful beach and outstanding fish restaurants make it an enjoyable day trip from Lisbon.

To get the most from the Sesimbra region a rental car is needed, and this could add the Serra da Arrabida and the Cabo Espichel to the day trip.

The Cabo Espichel is the wind-blasted south-westerly headland formed of massive cliffs and raging seas. Found at the headland is a historic church, a powerful lighthouse and dinosaur footprints that have been exposed in the cliffs.

The Serra da Arrabida are a series of forest hills and a wonderful coastline that offers some of the most beautiful beaches in Portugal. A highlight of the Serra da Arrabida is the N379 road, which meanders through the hills and crosses a ridge, providing spectacular views both north and south. Why? Religious centre for the Knights Templar Highlight: Convento de Cristo How to travel there: train Typical visit length: 4 hours Lots of tourists in the summer? no

Today, Tomar may be a peaceful town, but during the 13th century, it was one of the most influential locations of the Iberian Peninsula, being the stronghold of the Knights Templar (later referred to as the Order of Christ). This powerful and secretive order ruled from the Convento de Cristo, an impressive fortified religious complex, with the beautiful Charola church at its centre. The Convento de Cristo is often regarded as one of the finest national monuments of Portugal.

The town of Tomar is relaxed and pretty, with cobbled streets, ancient churches and an unhurried atmosphere in the cafes and restaurants that line the Nabão River. If you are seeking a non-touristy day trip, then Tomar is the place for you. Related articles: Tomar guide

9 - Mafra and Ericeira as a day trip from Lisbon

Why? The setting for the largest palace in Portugal Highlight: Mafra palace, the surfing vibe of Ericeira How to travel there: bus Typical visit length: 2 hours (often a day trip is combined with Ericeira) Lots of tourists in the summer? not too crowded

The Palácio Nacional de Mafra is the largest palace in Portugal. The scale of the building completely dominates the town, and its 18th-century construction almost bankrupted the Portuguese by employing a staggering 45,000 workers. This vast complex contains over 1,200 rooms and even today with the limited number open, visitors will still find themselves walking long distances.

A day trip to Mafra is often combined with Ericeira, as apart from the palace there is not much else to see in the Mafra.

Ericeira is a traditional fishing town, which is at the centre of a coastline of fantastic surfing beaches. This has transformed peaceful Ericeira into a cool surfing hub, where historic buildings sit next to trendy surfing bars. Ericeira is extremely pretty, with its cobbled streets and whitewashed houses perched at the top of sheer cliffs. Related articles: Mafra guide - Ericeira guide

10 - Cristo Rei statue and Costa da Caparica

Why? The Cristo Rei viewpoint and the beautiful beaches of the Costa da Caparica Highlight: The Cristo Rei viewpoint How to travel there: Cristo Rei ferry (15min) Costa da Caparica (20min) Typical visit length: 1 hour Cristo Rei and 2 hours Costa da Caparica Lots of tourists in the summer? yes

An excursion to the Christ Rei statue and the town of Cacilhas is an enjoyable half-day activity (including travel time), which can be extended into a full day by visiting the resort town of Costa da Caparica.

The Christ Rei statue stands on the southern bank of the Tejo Estuary, and from the viewing platform are wonderful views of the region. Costa da Caparica is a modern beach resort that is situated on a beautiful sandy shoreline, which extends for 30km along the entire western side of the Setubal Peninsula. During the summer a mini-train travels along the coastline and provides access to deserted beaches.

Tourist advice: The best way to travel to the Christ Rei statue is to catch the ferry from Cais do Sodre to Cacilhas, and then take the 101 bus service from Cacilhas to the statue. Related articles: Travel to Cristo Rei - Costa da Caparica guide
