Quebec Cruise Port Terminal Information

Last updated on February 9th, 2024 at 12:56 pm

Located in the heart of historic Quebec City, the cruise terminal offers a blend of European charm and Canadian hospitality. Immerse yourself in the city's rich history, explore its UNESCO-listed Old Town, and savor the local cuisine before embarking on a memorable cruise.

The Port of Quebec has two cruise terminals – Wharf 20/21, which has been the main location and new for the 2022 season, Wharf 30.

Wharf 20/21

The Quebec City Cruise Terminal or Wharf 20/21 (known locally as Ross Gaudreault Cruise Terminal) is located at 84 Dalhousie Street . It is located within walking distance of the Petit-Champlain district in the lower old city.

Wharf 30 is Quebec City’s newest cruise terminal and is located on Rue de l’Estuaire off Rue Abraham-Martin. It is located further away from the old city, but a shuttle is available for cruise passengers who dock for the day.

Quebec City is ideal for pre- and post-cruise sightseeing as the feel of the old city is as close as you’ll get to old-world Europe without actually crossing the Atlantic. It is the only fortified city in North America north of Mexico. While French is the main language spoken, many speak English as well, especially within the tourist center of Old Quebec . See here for parking and transportation information.

Entrance to the Port of Quebec

Old Quebec is located on the side of a large hill. You will dock in the “lower city” where you will find attractions like the Museum of Civilization, or Rue de Champlain with restaurants and shopping. The “upper city” has attractions such as the famed Chateau Frontenac, the Fairmont hotel, and the Citadelle, as well as a plethora of shops and cafes tucked away in narrow streets. To get from the lower city to the upper city, you can walk up steep sidewalks,  climb the “breakneck stairs,” or ride the historical Funiculaire .

Funiculaire in Quebec City

Riding the Funiculaire costs $3.75 per ride, but users in wheelchairs as well  children with heights under 3.8 feet (117cm) ride for free!

If you have mobility issues or use a walking aid, or just don’t feel like doing a lot of walking, it is easy to catch a taxi to take to the upper city where you can explore at your leisure.

Sightseeing:

Château Frontenac The hotel is generally recognized as the most photographed hotel in the world, largely due to its prominence in the skyline of Quebec City. Although several of Quebec City's buildings are taller, the landmark hotel is perched atop a tall cape overlooking the Saint Lawrence River, affording a spectacular view for several kilometers.

An integral part of the Place-Royale historic site, the Maison Chevalier , restored in 1959, is in fact three separate houses: the Chesnay house, the Frérot house and the Chevalier house. Their fire walls, high fireplaces and arched cellars make them especially significant examples of Quebec's architectural heritage. The Maison Chevalier displays domestic scenes from the past in a permanent exhibition.

Basilique Notre-Dame-de-Québec in the Upper Town: This basilica has the oldest parish in North America, dating from 1647. Its somber, ornate interior includes a canopy dais over the episcopal throne, a ceiling of painted clouds decorated with gold leaf, richly colored stained-glass windows, and a chancel lamp that was a gift from Louis XIV.

The large and famous crypt was Québec City's first cemetery; more than 900 bodies are interred here, including 20 bishops and four governors of New France. Samuel de Champlain may be buried near the basilica: archaeologists have been searching for his tomb since 1950. There are information panels that allow you to read about the history of this church. Or, if you prefer, there are guided tours available.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

Quebec is made for waking.

There is a funicular from Rue du Petit Champlain in Lower Town to Hotel Chateau Frontenac in Upper Town.

Nearby Places:

Less than thirty minutes from downtown, it is possible to enjoy the landscapes of Ile d'Orléans, the Beaupré Coast and the magnificent Montmorency Falls. A famed pilgrimage destination, the Basilica of Ste-Anne de Beaupré attracts large numbers of visitors every year.  All this and even more make Quebec City a unique destination in North America.

Shopping and Food

Quebec City's Old Town, especially Basse-Ville, is riddled with shops for tourists. Watch for leather goods and various handmade crafts made by Canada's First Nations Peoples.

  • Verrerrie La Mailloche, by the Breakneck Stairs (Basse-Ville). They often have glass blowing demonstrations and will explain the craft to you.
  • Place Laurier, Place de la Cité, Place Ste-Foy, 2700 boulevard Laurier. Three large shopping malls right next to each other. Place Laurier boasts being the largest shopping mall in eastern Canada. reachable by bus (800 or 801 from Place D'Youville at the end of Rue St Jean).

All restaurants in the Old City will post menus out front in French and in English. Look for the table d'hote specials for a full course fixed price meal. On the cheaper (but very satisfying) side, have a traditional tourtière quebecois (meat pie), or a poutine (fries, gravy, and cheese curds).

It's considered normal to tip 10-15% of a restaurant bill. Tips are also usually given to bell hops, concierges, room cleaners, cab drivers, hairdressers, hotel attendants and, by savvy drinkers, bar staff.

Canadian dollar

You will find ATMs in many grocery stores, malls, airports and so on, and most are linked to the international networks, the most common being Cirrus, Plus, Star and Maestro. You can also grab cash from an ATM if you use a major credit card although this method tends to be more expensive because, in addition to a service fee, you'll be charged interest immediately.

Pier location.

Carved into Cap Diamant, the plateau on the edge of the Promontory of Quebec, Quebec City is an incredibly picturesque European-style city with deep French roots and a rich history.

Quebec City is a common embarkation/disembarkation port for Canada and New England cruises, and cruise ships dock right near the old city at the Ross Gaudreault Cruise Terminal. The Quebec City cruise terminal is easily accessible via foot, car, or public transportation and full tourist services are available at the terminal including free Wi-Fi and a staffed visitor information booth.

seabourn quebec city

Background/History of Port

Founded in 1608 by French settlers, Quebec City is one of the oldest European settlements in North America and the only remaining fortified city north of Mexico City. Prior to the arrival of Europeans, the region was occupied by indigenous hunters and fishermen including the Innu and Algonquin people. The name Quebec is thought to be derived from the Algonquin word for “where the river narrows.”

Quebec City’s charming Old Town is a dedicated UNESCO World Heritage Site, a living history museum of cobbled streets and 17th and 18th-century stone houses. Old Town is divided into both an Upper and Lower Town, and the Upper Town is where most visitors spend a majority of their time. Built on a cliff overlooking the St. Lawrence River, Upper Town is where you’ll find many of the city’s top attractions including the Notre-Dame Basilica, the Quebec Citadel, and the massive Chateau Frontenac hotel.

Quebec has held on strongly to its French heritage and although English is spoken widely in the tourist areas, French is the official language of Quebec. Learning a few French words before you arrive can be helpful, but you’re safe to assume most city residents are bilingual.

Local Flavor

Traditional Quebec cuisine has been strongly influenced by both French and Irish culture. Quebec may be most famous for its poutine; in fact, this heaping dish of french fries and cheese curds smothered in gravy was invented here. Find poutine almost anywhere in Quebec City from breweries, food trucks, and fast food joints to fine dining restaurants serving gourmet versions.

Tourtiere is another traditional Quebecois favorite. Essentially a meat pie made from minced pork, beef, or wild game and potatoes, Tourtiere is traditionally served around the holiday season. One of the best places to try it is at Aux Anciens Canadiens , a restaurant in Old Quebec specializing in authentic Quebecois cuisine. Sample several traditional dishes with a three-course lunch at Aux Anciens Canadiens , one of the best deals in old town.

Quebec is also about all things maple-flavored, considering it is the world’s largest producer of maple syrup. You’ll find feves au lard, baked beans seasoned with maple syrup, served alongside most breakfast foods, plenty of maple taffy, maple butter pies, and other maples sweets around town. For maple syrup and other maple-flavored sourvenirs, visit the year-round Quebec City Farmer’s Market, just a half-mile walk from the port. In fall, don’t miss all the apple-related goods.

MORE:  Cruise Port Overview: Portland, Maine

What Quebec City lacks in big-name boutiques and large department stores, it certainly makes up for in unique and authentic shops. The steets near Rue St-Paul in Lower Town are packed with charming antique dealers and art galleries and Rue de Trésor is a great spot to go for local art. The Brousseau Inuit Art Gallery features Canadian Inuit artists and the Boutique Métiers d’Art showcases a variety of local artisans. In Upper Town, you’ll find the oldest department store in Quebec, La Maison Simmons .

Cultural Attractions

For a quick introduction to Quebec City’s 400-year history, head to the Museum of Civilization (Musee de la Civilisation), located just across the street from the port. Here you’ll find exhibits on Quebec colonial history and the indigenous people that occupied the area before the arrival of the Europeans, and a collection of unique and historical artifacts from cultures around the world. Don’t miss the museum gift shop set in a historic 18th-century vault for interesting gifts inspired by Canadian folklore.

Visitors interested in Quebec’s French history and culture will enjoy a visit to the Museum of Francophone America (Musee de l’Amerique Francophone). Housed in a former seminary, the museum showcases the history of French America through art, artifacts, and other treasures. Art lovers will enjoy the large collection of Quebec and inuit art at the National Museum of Fine Arts of Quebec (Musée National des Beaux-Arts du Québec).

For further insight into Quebec’s colonial history, the military museum in the Citadel of Quebec (Le Musee Royal 22e Regiment) and the Fort Museum (Musee du Fort), located in front of the Chateau Frontenac, are other interesting museums to visit.

Top Excursions

From traditional walking tours to day trips to the countryside and beyond, a wide variety of shore excursions are offered from the Quebec City port. Many combine a tour of the historic old town sights with a visit to Montmorency Falls or a food and wine tasting experience.

  • Historic Quebec City Walking Tours  — Skip the hassle of navigating the maze of Quebec City’s cobblestone streets on your own and ensure you see all of the top sights with a guided walking tour of the city’s main attractions, including the Chateau Frontenac and Place Royale. Choose between private and small-group tours or opt for a hop-on hop-off bus tour to explore the sights at your own pace.

An Insider’s Perspective

If you’re looking to escape the city, head across the St. Lawrence River and explore the Island of Orleans. The island is made up of several old villages with picturesque farms, vineyards, produce stands, and family-run shops. The only way to fully explore the island is by car or guided tour. The chocolates at the Chocolaterie de l’lle d’Orleans are an absolute delight and the blackcurrant liqueurs and syrups at Cassis Monna & Filles make excellent gifts.

The Port of Québec is the first cruise ship destination on the St. Lawrence. With its welcoming, clean and secure environment, the Port is a highly sought-after destination among the major international cruise ship lines. As soon as their ship docks, tourists are won over the city's charm and attractions. Just steps away from the Ross Gaudrault Cruise Terminal, they can discover Quebec City through its alleys, its fortifications—the only ones north of Mexico, its architectural heritage and, of course, its smiling people.

With its unique offer and high-quality facilities, Quebec City has carved itself a place among the world’s top cruise ship destinations.

  • Most popular destination for cruise ship passengers among the 400 destinations served by Holland America Line
  • Among the top 10 favourite destinations of Royal Caribbean International cruise ship passengers

Montreal cruise port

Region East Coast USA and Canada New England

Local Time 2024-03-04 05:19

Port Montreal cruise ship schedule shows timetable calendars of all arrival and departure dates by month. The port's schedule lists all ships (in links) with cruises going to or leaving from Montreal, Quebec Canada. To see the full itineraries (ports of call dates and arrival / departure times) and their lowest rates – just follow the corresponding ship-link.

Montreal is a major port city in Canada's Quebec Province and by population (around 1,7 million, metro over 3,5 million) is ranked the country's 2nd largest city (after Toronto ). As cruise port, Montreal handles over 100,000 passengers annually. Midway between Montreal and Toronto is Kingston ON (on Lake Ontario/ St Lawrence Seaway ).

The city features a distinct 4-season climate, with cold and snowy winters and hot summers. Montreal is Canada's 2nd-largest economy and Quebec's largest by GDP. The city is a major center of industry, commerce, finance, technology. Industries include electronics, aerospace, pharmaceuticals, software, printed goods, telecommunications, textile manufacturing, petrochemicals, tobacco, transportation, media (French-language TV productions, radio, movies, print publishing).

The city is best-known for its world-class productions in music, theatre, dance, visual arts. Local cultural life (particularly in the summer) is prompted by many festivals, the largest being Montreal International Jazz Festival (world's largest). St Joseph's Oratory (Canada's largest church) has the world's second-largest copper dome (after Rome 's St Peter's Basilica). The Old Town features narrow cobblestone streets.

Port Montreal

Port's cruising season runs from May through November. High-season is September-October when Canada's "Fall Foliage" cruises are scheduled. Port's statistics show that most cruise ship tourists are Americans (72%), followed by Australians (8,5%), Canadians (7,5%) and British (4,5%). The largest cruise ship in Montreal so far is AIDALuna (LOA length 251 m, passenger capacity 2500).

Port Montreal is one of all 9  St Lawrence  cruise ports of call - together with  Quebec City , Trois-Rivieres ,  Saguenay , Baie-Comeau ,  Sept-Îles ,  Gaspe , Havre-Saint-Pierre and Magdalen Islands . In 2015, Port Montreal handled a total of 73 cruise ship visits, which was 29 more (over 2014). These vessels brought over 92,000 passengers and crew to the city, which was a nearly 30% increase over 2014.

In 2016, when Montreal celebrated its 375th anniversary, the cruise port reported an increase of 28% (over 2015) in passenger shipping volumes. Another factor was the opening (in May) of the refurbished cruise terminal. In 2017, the port handled over 110,000 cruise passengers and reported a revenue of around USD 30 million in cruise-related operations.

In August 2017, Montreal Port Authority (MPA) announced the completion of its shorepower supply project (total cost USD 11 million). The new cruise terminal now offers shoreside power (electricity) for all berthed vessels. The first liner to connect was Holland America 's MS Veendam . The project's first phase resulted in shore-side power supply for wintering ships only, while phase 2 was for cruise vessels. Port's all 4 shorepower stations were inaugurated in 2016 - at berths 25, 27, 29 and M2 (wintering vessels). Shore power allows docked ships to shut down completely their diesel engines, thus reducing bad emissions. Of the project's USD 11 million, USD 5 million were contributed by the Canadian Government, USD 3 million by the Quebec Government and USD 3 million by MPA.

Based on its 2018 cruise schedule (berth bookings), the seaport announced a record year with expected ~130,000 tourists. This was a 14% increase over 2017's 52 ship calls and 114,000+ passengers. In 2018, the cruise port handled 101,504 passengers (10% over 2017) plus 25,383 crew (11,8% increase / 22,888 in 2017) to a total of 127,087 tourists (11% increase over 2017). In 2018, the port welcomed its 80,000th passenger of AIDA Cruises . Maiden calls were made by the liners AIDAvita , Star Pride , Silver Spirit , Victory II . The port handled 25 ship calls from 18 different cruise shipping companies.

Following the Canada-Europe free-trade agreement CETA (Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement), in 2018, Port Montreal also projected a record year for its cargo shipping traffic. This is Canada's second-largest cargo port (following only Port Metro Vancouver / handling over 1/2 of Canada's containerized cargoes). In January 2017 was opened the new containership terminal with annual capacity ~600,000 TEU-containers. Port Montreal is also Quebec's only container port. It is ranked Eastern Canada's largest (1,7+ million TEUs handled in 2018) providing the shortest direct lines between Europe and North America.

  • There are plans for building another (larger) container terminal (in Contrecoeur) with annual capacity 1,15 million TEUs, with completion by 2021-2022.
  • In August 2019 CIB (Canada Infrastructure Bank) joined the Contrecoeur port development/expansion project by developing its financial structuring. The signed with MPA deal included designing, construction works, financing, as well as terminal operation and maintenance.

In March 2019, Montreal Port Authority and LOGISTEC Corporation announced that Viau Terminal (annual capacity ~350,000 TEUs, operator Termont Montreal Inc) will be further expanded. This (second phase) follows Phase 1 which was completed in 2016. In 2018, for a 5th consecutive year, the port's container shipping volume increased 9% (to ~1,7 million TEUs). When completed (in December 2020), Phase 2 will add annual capacity 250,000 TEUs, thus bringing Viau Terminal's capacity to 600,000 TEUs and Port's total TEU capacity to 2,1 million. Since January 2021, Viau Terminal will generate around 2500 jobs and contribute ~CAD 340 million to the state's economy.

On June 10, 2021, MPA signed an agreement with Greenfield Global Inc (1989-founded, Toronto -based company which specializes in biofuel production) for supplying hydrogen fuel for the Port's shoreside power facility (in operation since 2017).

In 2022, following the 2-year hiatus due to the COVID crisis, the cruise port had scheduled a total of 46 ship calls/booked berthings, with estimated 40-50,000 visiting tourists.

In 2023 (April 29 through October 30), the Port handled a total of 48 cruise calls (+33% over 2022) from 23 different ships (15 brands/companies) and ~67000 tourists (~51000 passengers plus ~16000 crew). The port's cruise schedule listed 5 new vessels (making maiden calls) - Hanseatic Inspiration (Hapag-Lloyd), Oceania Vista, Pacific World (Peace Boat) Viking Neptune and Viking Mars (Viking OCEAN).

In 2024, the Port expects +6% growth in cruise passengers (~54000) and has scheduled 7 maiden calls/new ships - MS Volendam (HAL-Holland America Line), Fred Olsen Borealis, Le Champlain and Le Lyrial (Ponant), Oceania Nautica, Seven Seas Grandeur (RSSC-Regent), World Explorer (Rivages du Monde).

Montreal cruise terminal

Montreal cruise port terminal is located in Old Montreal on De la Commune Street. It is between the downtown Montreal and St Lawrence River.

Cruise ships in Montreal dock at Iberville Passenger Terminal. The cruise port is approx 20-min from the city's airport Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (formerly Montreal Dorval International Airport). There are taxis available at the terminal, as well as offices of the car rental agencies Hertz, Avis, Nation.

Montreal is a really walkable city. All major downtown attractions are close to the cruise port. For those who prefer there is a great public transportation system with bus service and metro. The other opportunity, typical for the city, is to rent a bike. There is a Montreal on Wheels office just in five minutes walking distance fron the cruise ship terminal.

Parking: at the Alexandra Pier costs USD 10 per day (rates for 6- to 8 consecutive days).

In 2015, Port Montreal invested USD 20 million in a restoration project for both Alexandra Pier and the marine passenger terminal.

(new) Montreal Cruise Terminal

Montreal Cruise Terminal (port's second passenger terminal) was inaugurated in May 2017. The first berthed vessel was Maasdam . The construction project cost USD 78 million, of which Quebec Government contributed 20 million, Montreal City 15 million and Montreal Port Authority 43 million.

The terminal has a direct grey-water connection and shore-to-ship power supply capabilities. This provides shoreside electrical power to berthed cruise vessels while the ship's main and auxiliary diesel engines are shut down. The shore power technology reduces greenhouse gas emissions by over 2800 tons per year. The project was rolled out in 2 phases - firstly for wintering vessels and later for cruise vessels. In 2016, the port installed 4 shore power stations (berths 25, 27, 29, M2) where berthed vessels can connect to the city's power grid.

The new passenger terminal also serves as an event space on no-sihp days, thus generating revenue the whole year-round.
