Handheld gaming systems are having a moment. While gaming on the go has been a thing since the Game Boy, the success of the Nintendo Switch and a string of ever-improving processors have brought an eruption of devices that let you play all sorts of games anywhere you want. Because new models seem to arrive every week, however, figuring out the best gaming handheld for you can be complicated. You already know that the Switch is great, but depending on what else you want to play, the right handheld could range from a $100 emulation machine to a $700 portable PC. To help you narrow things down, we’ve researched the best handheld gaming consoles, tested the major contenders and laid out a few top picks.

You can break down the gaming handheld market into three broad tiers. At the top, you have x86-based portable gaming PCs like the Steam Deck or ASUS ROG Ally . These are the most powerful handhelds you can buy, as they seek to replicate the experience of a moderately specced gaming desktop. The Steam Deck runs on the Linux operating system, but most others use Windows. If you want to play modern, recently released PC games on the go (and need something stronger than a Switch), this is the type of device you’d get. They can also emulate the widest range of retro consoles. They’re typically the largest and most cumbersome devices to hold, however, and their battery life can be short. Naturally, they’re also the most expensive, costing anywhere from $400 to more than $1,000.

Further down on the price spectrum are "mobile handhelds" like the Logitech G Cloud or Retroid Pocket . These devices often run Android or Linux and can range from under $50 to $400-ish. They aren’t equipped to play modern console or PC titles, but they’re usually more compact than a portable PC, and you can still use them for mobile games and cloud streaming. While most are marketed toward those ends, many gamers actually buy them to emulate classic games through software like RetroArch . Getting emulators to work can be complicated , and accessing the BIOS and ROM files required to play games this way is legally murky . (Engadget does not condone piracy.) Backing up files of games you already own for personal use only is considered more defensible, though, so for that a mobile handheld can be a more user- and wallet-friendly way to play the classics (or even some Switch games) anywhere.

We’ll call the last tier “handhelds that do their own thing.” This is a catch-all for things like the Switch or Playdate : portable devices that run heavily customized software and aim to provide a unique gaming experience. They aren’t necessarily ideal for emulation or playing the latest multiplatform titles; instead, they often have distinct game libraries. They might not have the widest appeal as a result (Switch excluded), but they’re often easier for less tech-literate folks to just pick up and use.

Thanks to a refresh late last year , Valve’s Steam Deck continues to offer the best balance of price, performance and usability in the gaming handheld market. And the new Steam Deck OLED is a thorough upgrade over the original. Starting at $549 for 512GB of storage, this variant features a 7.4-inch OLED display that’s brighter, faster, slightly bigger and more vivid than the 7-inch IPS panel on the now entry-level model. The higher contrast and richer colors of an OLED screen makes every game look better by default, but this display also supports HDR, with significantly brighter highlights at its peak. The maximum refresh rate has jumped from 60Hz to 90Hz as well, which can help many games look smoother.

Due to the less power-hungry display, a more efficient AMD APU and a larger battery, the Steam Deck OLED also lasts longer than before. No handheld can play resource-intensive "AAA" games for too long, but Valve says the new model can run for three to 12 hours depending on the game, whereas the LCD model lasts between two and eight. A larger fan keeps things cooler and quieter, and the chassis feels lighter. Performance is roughly the same, though the OLED model’s increased memory bandwidth can help it gain a couple extra frames in certain games.

All that said, $549 is a big investment. The entry-level Steam Deck , which uses a more basic IPS LCD display but now comes with a 256GB SSD as standard, is still an unmatched value at $399. Newer AAA games are certainly pushing their limits, but both Decks can run tons of games that just aren’t possible on a Nintendo Switch, from Elden Ring to Final Fantasy VII Remake to the Resident Evil 4 remake. While official game support is limited to a subset of the Steam library, the list of officially verified and still-playable titles is massive, diverse and constantly growing. (There are workarounds to access other storefronts as well.)

A near-constant stream of updates has turned Valve’s SteamOS into a flexible yet user-friendly platform. You’ll still need to make tweaks every now and then to get a game to run optimally, but the process is usually straightforward. That power, combined with third-party tools like EmuDeck , makes the Deck superb for emulation as well. Some PS3 and original Xbox games can be tricky, but just about everything else works beautifully. You can also cloud stream Xbox games with a little setup .

The Steam Deck’s biggest issue is its size: At two inches thick and nearly a foot long, it stretches the definition of a “handheld” device, even if the OLED model is lighter by comparison. The LCD Deck can get warm and noisy fairly quickly, too, and the d-pad on each device is somewhat mushy. But the contoured grips on the back help offset the bulk, and both versions feel sturdy, with responsive face buttons and triggers, smooth joysticks and useful dual touchpads.

If you’re willing to spend extra for more power, you can skip the Steam Deck and buy a Windows-based handheld instead. The ASUS ROG Ally is the one that should work for most people, and it’s a decent alternative if you’re willing to trade ease of use for a higher performance ceiling. Think of it like a more portable gaming laptop.

Note that we’re specifically recommending the model with an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme APU, which costs $700. ASUS sells another version with a weaker Ryzen Z1 chip for $100 less, but the power drop-off there is too great. With the Z1 Extreme, the ROG Ally can play more demanding games at higher frame rates and resolutions than the Steam Deck. In our review , we saw fps gains of 15 to 25 percent in AAA fare like Cyberpunk 2077 and Shadow of the Tomb Raider . While the Steam Deck officially tops out at a TDP of 15W, the ROG Ally’s Turbo mode boosts its power draw to 25W (or 30W when plugged in), letting it eke out more frames. It’s not the absolute fastest handheld , and the Steam Deck can actually outperform it on occasion at the same TDP, resolution and graphics settings. But the ROG Ally has more overhead going forward, which is important if you mostly play graphically demanding games.

The ROG Ally’s 7-inch LCD display isn’t as bright or color-rich as the Steam Deck OLED, but it has a sharper 1080p resolution and a faster 120Hz refresh rate. Most importantly, it supports variable refresh rates (VRR), which helps keep the image smooth even as a game’s frame rate fluctuates. Despite having a similar-size screen, the ROG Ally is also shorter, lighter and thinner than the Steam Deck OLED. That said, it doesn’t come with a case. And though the hardware isn’t as much of a brick as the Steam Deck, Valve’s handheld has more pronounced grips around its back, which could still make it easier to hold for those with large hands.

The ROG Ally’s upgraded performance and sharper display come at the expense of battery life, however. That usually sits in the two- to four-hour range, but it can be even less with certain games and higher performance modes, somewhat defeating the point of a “portable” device.

Because it runs on Windows 11, the ROG Ally can play games from any gaming client, not just a selection of Steam games. If you've built up libraries on stores like Epic, GOG, Itch.io or the Xbox app, you can access them here as you would on any other Windows PC, no special workarounds required. For those who want to play Epic exclusives like Alan Wake 2 or Xbox Game Pass titles, this is a real advantage.

But the biggest issue with all Windows handhelds is Windows itself. ASUS has made more strides than most by turning its Armoury Crate software into a centralized settings hub and game library, but it’s still slapping a bandage on an OS that simply isn’t designed for this device class.

Whether a game works smoothly right away can feel like a crapshoot on a Windows handheld. Sometimes the UI won’t scale properly, sometimes you’ll have to spend several minutes fiddling with graphics settings and key bindings, sometimes you’ll have to alternate between navigating the OS with buttons and with your fingers. I once had to hard-reset the ROG Ally after a driver issue kept the screen from turning on.

ASUS shows a helpful seven-minute tutorial on how to update and use the ROG Ally upon first launching Armoury Crate, but the fact that it needs a seven-minute intro video in the first place is telling. Nobody will confuse the Steam Deck with a Switch, but it’s much simpler to just pick up and use than any Windows alternative.

The ROG Ally has also had some troubles with quality control. Most notably, several users have reported problems with the device ejecting or outright killing their microSD cards, an issue ASUS has since confirmed . The device’s SSD is replaceable with a little legwork , however, so we recommend taking that route if you need more than 512GB of storage.

The $199 Retroid Pocket 4 Pro is a great value for those who primarily want a gaming handheld to emulate older consoles. It’s an Android-based device with far less power than the Steam Deck or ROG Ally, so it can only run PC, PS5 and Xbox games via streaming. But if you want something more compact and are willing to go through the rigors of getting emulators to work, it’s the most capable handheld we’ve tested for less than $200.

The Pocket 4 Pro runs on a MediaTek Dimensity 1100 chip and 8GB of RAM, and it has a built-in fan with three different modes you can activate to gain a little extra performance. This provides enough power to play most games from the PlayStation 2 and Nintendo GameCube, two popular retro consoles that are often tough for mobile handhelds to emulate. Not every game worked — particularly demanding titles like Star Wars Rogue Squadron II and ESPN NFL 2K5 were too choppy — and getting many others to run optimally required tinkering with resolution, rendering and active cooling settings. With some setup, though, it can play a significant chunk of PS2 and GameCube games at full speed and double their native resolution. The fact it can stably play more intensive titles like Gran Turismo 4 at all, even at lower settings, is fantastic for the money.

Almost everything we tested from systems below the PS2 and GameCube on the performance totem pole — PSP, Dreamcast, PS1, N64, etc. — ran flawlessly at a 2-4x upscale. The only exceptions were a few games for the notoriously thorny Sega Saturn. Select games from later consoles like the 3DS and Wii were also playable, though the experience was more touch-and-go. For modern games, Xbox cloud streaming worked just fine, as did native Android games with gamepad support like Diablo Immortal .

The Pocket 4 Pro is built like a shorter Nintendo Switch Lite. It’s a flat slab that lacks ergonomic grips but is still comfortable to hold thanks to its low weight and small profile. It doesn’t feel cheap or creaky despite its plastic frame, and its textured coating is pleasing to the touch. All of its buttons feel right: The face buttons are smooth and have a comfortable amount of travel; the analog triggers are conveniently wide and flared; the bumpers are clicky and easy to distinguish; and the d-pad is firm and precise. The joysticks are on the stubby side and placed a little too low on the device to be truly comfortable with modern games, but they have a comfortable level of tension. And because they use magnetic Hall effect sensors , they should avoid drifting issues over time. Underneath those are handy start, select, home and back buttons. There’s also a micro-HDMI port for connecting to a TV or monitor. The down-firing speakers are perfectly decent, though they’re easy to cover with your fingers by accident.

The 4.7-inch IPS display isn’t the most accurate we’ve tested even after updates, but it’s sufficiently bright, sharp and vivid, and any color temperature issues are hard to notice unless you’re looking at white background. It’s cramped for streaming modern games, however, and its 16:9 aspect ratio means you’ll get hefty black borders with some older consoles by default. Battery life is fine given the device’s size-to-performance ratio: We got three to four hours with PS2 and GameCube games, and around eight or nine hours mixing in older consoles. The active cooling system prevents the Pocket 4 Pro from ever feeling too hot, though it can get noticeably loud at its highest performance setting.

Retroid also sells a non-Pro version of the Pocket 4 with a slower Dimensity 900 chip and 4GB of RAM for $149. We haven’t been able to test it, but if you like this design and don’t care as much about emulating games from the PS2, GameCube and up, it may be a better value. It'll still be able to play many games from those two systems, and everything below that should be rock solid. But the Pocket 4 Pro casts a wider safety net performance-wise, so it should be worth the extra $50 for those who want to emulate higher-power consoles more reliably.

If you have more cash to burn on an emulation-focused machine, the AYN Odin 2 is the absolute best retro gaming handheld you can buy right now. This Android device can play everything the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro can plus a little extra, with smoother and more reliable performance. That's mainly due to its Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, which is the same chip used by many of last year’s flagship phones .

The Odin 2 starts at $299 for 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, which is expensive when the entry-level Steam Deck lets you play PC games for just $100 more. Still, among more compact mobile handhelds, there's really nothing else that runs this well in this price range. It played all PS2 and GameCube games we tested at two to three times their native resolution, while systems like the PS1, N64 and Dreamcast were typically playable at a 3-4x upscale. Most 3DS and Wii games will have little to no slowdowns at 2-3x, either. It’s better than most with the Sega Saturn, and it can play a wider range of Switch games than the Pocket 4 Pro (though Switch emulators on Android are still maturing). More challenging systems will still require some settings tweaks, but you won’t have to tinker on a game-by-game basis as much as you will with lower-cost devices.

It’s not just raw performance, though: The Odin 2 is also a refined piece of hardware. It’s not as compact as the Pocket 4 Pro, but it’s much less chunky than a portable PC and the curved grips on its back make it easy to hold, particularly with newer games. Its d-pad, face buttons, analog triggers and Hall effect joysticks all feel great. Other touches like a fingerprint scanner, a dedicated return button, a micro-HDMI out port and two customizable back buttons are all nice perks, and the front-facing speakers are a clear upgrade over the Pocket 4 Pro.

The 6-inch, 1080p touchscreen is solid and well-sized, though it can stay a bit too bright in darker settings. Battery life is superb: We got more than eight hours of juice emulating systems like the PS2, but that jumped over 20 hours with lighter tasks. The device supports 65W fast charging as well. Cloud streaming and native Android games work as they should, and since the whole thing runs on a lightly modded version of Google’s OS, its stock interface should feel familiar to most.

The base Odin 2 has been in and out of stock, and the Pocket 4 Pro is a genuinely compelling alternative for $100 less. But the Odin 2 is still a step up in performance and overall comfort for those who can afford it. If you want to play the classics or stream modern games without a hitch, it’s the Android handheld to get.

The Analogue Pocket is the ultimate Game Boy . Its vertical design is built like a modernized, premium version of Nintendo’s classic handheld, and it can even work with accessories like the Game Boy Camera. Compared to the original, though, the Pocket adds two extra face buttons, a pair of rear triggers, a microSD slot, a USB-C port and a rechargeable battery rated for six to 10 hours of playtime. Most significantly, it has a gorgeous 3.5-inch display that’s both backlit and incredibly sharp (615 ppi) but can be set to look like an old Game Boy panel with different filter modes. The device can also output to a TV with an optional dock.

Unlike the retro handhelds mentioned above, the Pocket is designed to play actual cartridges, not just ROM files. It works with Game Boy, Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance games through its cartridge slot, while games from the Sega Game Gear are playable through an optional adapter. (Eventually, one day , adapters for other systems like the TurboGrafx-16 and Atari Lynx will arrive as well.)

Like past Analogue devices, the Pocket uses field-programmable gate array (FPGA) motherboards to mimic its target systems on a hardware level. In practice, this means the Pocket’s “emulation” of older titles is near-perfect, with a level of responsiveness and visual faithfulness that software-based emulation can’t match. Pop in a Game Boy or GBA cartridge and you can essentially play it as intended. That said, thanks to a big post-launch update and an active user community, the Pocket can also run ROMs off a microSD card and thus play systems like the SNES and Sega Genesis.

The Pocket isn’t cheap at $220, and its shoulder buttons aren’t as crisp to press as the excellent d-pad or face buttons. Still, if you have a collection of Game Boy, Game Gear or GBA games, the Pocket is the most elegant way to play them, and it’s only become more versatile over time. Its biggest flaw is that it can be hard to buy — expect to wait a few weeks for new orders to ship.

Honorable mentions

The Lenovo Legion Go is a capable alternative to the ASUS ROG Ally if you want a Windows handheld with a larger display. It also costs $700, runs on the same Ryzen Z1 Extreme chip and offers a similar set of performance modes, but it has a mondo-sized 8.8-inch panel with a sharper 2,560 x 1,600 resolution and a higher 144Hz refresh rate. It also borrows some ideas from the Switch, including detachable controllers and a built-in kickstand for playing games in a “tabletop” mode. Those controllers have touchpads to make navigating Windows a little easier, something the ROG Ally lacks. Battery life is a little better than ASUS’ machine as well.

But it’s still a Windows handheld, and Lenovo’s software tweaks aren’t as mature (yet) as what ASUS has done with Armoury Crate, so the UX often feels half-baked. The jumbo design is bulkier and a half-pound heavier than the ROG Ally, so some will find it too fatiguing to hold. Its fans are louder, too, and the display lacks VRR. Still, it's not a bad choice if you’re dead-set on Windows.

The Miyoo Mini Plus is much more affordable than the Retroid Pocket 4 and comes with a well-built, Game Boy-style form factor that fits nicely with older games. Its 3.5-inch display really pops for something in the $60 to $80 range, its battery lasts as long as it needs to and it can emulate consoles up to the original PlayStation without much issue. It runs Linux, so it’s extensively customizable, though it can require a bit of tinkering to get it working optimally. Since it’s from a smaller Chinese firm and isn’t available at major retailers, however, it can be difficult to actually buy.

The Playdate , from app developer and Untitled Goose Game publisher Panic, is a tiny yellow box with a 2.7-inch monochrome display, two face buttons, a d-pad and a physical crank built into its side. We called it a “cross between a Game Boy and a business card” in our review , and it is indeed incredibly small at roughly three inches tall and 0.18 pounds. It has a dedicated game library that largely consists of oddball indies , most of which focus on one or two core ideas instead of trying to stuff in as many mechanics as possible. A couple dozen of those games are bundled with the device, while others are available via a built-in store or sideloading from shops like Itch.io . It’s generally well-built, and its battery life is decent at six to eight hours per charge.

At $200, it’s hard to call the Playdate a great value when it’s only designed to play a selection of niche games. Its display isn’t backlit, either. But in a sea of devices that try to be everything for everyone, the Playdate is admirably focused and low-key. If you’re into smaller-scale fare and have some money to play with, it’ll be a fun toy. It may take a few weeks to ship, though.

The Anbernic RG405M is a good Android handheld if you like the idea of the Retroid Pocket 4 but want something more compact. This device has a 4-inch display with a 4:3 aspect ratio, which means you won’t have to deal with black bars as much for retro games (though it can feel crunched with newer systems and cloud streaming). It also has a more substantial metal frame. But it’s more expensive than the Pocket 4 at $170 or so, and its chipset is weaker for PS2 or GameCube emulation.

We’ll also note the Retroid Pocket 2S , another 4:3 handheld that starts at $99. It’s a nice compromise if you’re on a tighter budget, but that lower cost brings a smaller 3.5-inch display, a slightly slower chip and less premium build quality than the RG405M.

Other notable gaming handhelds we tested

The Ayaneo Kun is the most decadent Windows handheld we’ve tested. With a sharp 8.4-inch display, a powerful Ryzen 7 7840U chip, up to 64GB of RAM, up to 4TB of storage, a huge 75Wh battery and a whopping 54W max TDP, it’s both a gaming beast and a feasible replacement for a desktop PC. But it starts at $1,000, with a top-end config priced at an eye-watering $1,700. It’s also huge, and it suffers from the usual Windows-related issues. It’s a super device if money is truly no object, one without much genuine competition, but it’s more handheld than most need.

The Ayaneo 2S is another high-power Windows handheld with a sharper display, larger battery and more configuration options than the ROG Ally. It uses the same chip as the Kun as well. But it’s limited to a 60Hz refresh rate and costs a few hundred dollars more.

The Anbernic RG35XX Plus is another wallet-friendly vertical handheld worth keeping an eye on. For about the same price as the Miyoo Mini Plus, it offers a faster chipset, more RAM and a bigger battery alongside a similarly impressive design. It could easily supplant Miyoo’s handheld in the future, but it’s newer, so it doesn’t have the same helpful firmware customizations right now, and its stock OS is pretty rough. Also, while its stronger processor is nice, its small screen and lack of analog sticks means you won’t want to emulate much beyond the PS1 anyway. Our reservations over the software also apply to the RG35XX H , a new variant of the Plus that puts the same chip in a more traditional design.

The Logitech G Cloud would be a great Android pick if it cost about $150 less. Its 7-inch 1080p display is bright, vibrant and generally more pleasing to look at than the panels on the Retroid Pocket 4 Pro or AYN Odin 2, its battery lasts a good 10 to 12 hours per charge and its design is comfy to hold for hours at a time. Alas, the G Cloud sells for $300, which is just too much when the Odin 2 offers far more power for the same price.

The PlayStation Portal is a baffling device that can only stream games from a PlayStation 5. It lacks built-in apps, so emulation isn’t possible, and it can’t tap into the cloud streaming service available with a PlayStation Plus Premium subscription. Because it’s entirely dependent on the quality of your home Wi-Fi, we can’t guarantee how well it’ll actually perform for you. It doesn’t work with Bluetooth earbuds, either. Its 8-inch display is fine and the DualSense-style controls are great, so Sony diehards who want a second screen for local PS5 streaming may see the appeal. But there’s nothing here that you can’t do with a smartphone and a mobile game controller , so most people are better off saving their $200.

Cette belle machine offre assez de puissance pour jouer à tous les jeux sans rogner sur la qualité graphique. Elle peut aussi faire office de station de travail performante : elle sait rester discrète en réunion, devient un bonheur à utiliser pour la bureautique et la création, et dispose d'une autonomie suffisante pour travailler un moment. Un très bon PC qui a toutefois un défaut que partagent beaucoup de produits Razer : le prix.

Le Lenovo Legion Slim 5 est un beau PC qui casse les codes de la machine de jeu difficile à transporter. On apprécie son design passe-partout et ses excellentes finitions. On aime aussi disposer d'un écran Oled, bluffant quand on joue, même si sa luminosité est loin d'être parfaite. Certes, il n'égale pas d'autres ordinateurs gaming de gamme équivalente en puissance brute, mais offre des performances suffisantes pour jouer en 1080p à l'ensemble des jeux du marché (parfois avec quelques concessions graphiques). On regrette tout de même que l'autonomie ne soit pas au niveau, ce qui nous empêche de faire de cet ordinateur un compagnon pour la journée.

If you’re not going to be playing graphics-intense games that require the highest frame rates, then there’s no sense in ponying up $2,000 for the latest and greatest gear, either.

Are Portable Computers Good for Gaming?

They certainly are but they’re a little more troublesome than standard gaming PCs. The primary reason behind this is that it’s more difficult to keep your PC cool. Portability doesn’t mean that you have to make a serious trade-off in the graphics and capabilities department, though.

In fact, most medium to higher-end portable gaming PCs and beyond are more capable than the latest in consoles, such as the PS5 and the Xbox Series X. However, there is one big downside. Portability comes with a price that can often exceeds building a full-size gaming PC.

If you want the best of what the gaming market has to offer, prepare to dish out anywhere between $1,500 and $2,000. With that said, you can still have a great, portable gaming experience with less. This is providing you’re willing to sacrifice some features and playing at the highest graphics settings.

How to Choose the Best Portable Gaming PC in 2024

Finding the best portable gaming PC goes beyond choosing a small form factor build. These builds focus on ease of transport as well as using space-efficient components. The small details can lead to major performance benefits over time.

Choosing the Best CPU/ GPU

For a portable gaming PC, look for a processor with at least four cores. It should have a clock speed of at least 3.5 GHz, but a higher clock rate is usually preferred. Most AMD Ryzen 5000 or 11th generation Intel Core models should meet your needs.

The Lenovo Legion Go is the latest gaming handheld looking to topple the mighty Steam Deck . With its large 8.8-inch 144Hz display, powerful AMD Ryzen 1 Extreme processor and detachable controllers, this Windows 11 -powered portable gaming system has a lot going for it.

Lenovo makes some of the best gaming laptops and best gaming PCs out there, so it’s not surprising that the company’s gaming handheld looks and feels like a premium product. Despite its virtues, the Legion Go's greatest strength is also its biggest weakness — namely, Windows 11. While the ubiquitous operating system allows for a great degree of customization via apps and programs, it also prevents Lenovo’s machine from being an easy-to-use gaming handheld.

While the Lenovo Legion Go isn’t perfect, its extra features arguably make it better than the Asus ROG Ally . For some, it could very well be the best handheld gaming console for playing the best PC games on the, well, go. I’ll detail everything the Legion Go has to offer in my full review.

The Lenovo Legion Go is now available for $699 on Lenovo’s website . This configuration features an 8.8-inch QHD (2,560 x 1,600) touchscreen display, an AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme chip, 16GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD storage. For $749, you can get a model packing 1TB of storage. This is the configuration we reviewed.

For those keeping score, the entry-level Legion Go costs as much as the high-end Asus ROG Ally. Considering the Legion Go’s unique features, you could argue that it’s more appealing than Asus’ handheld. But as we’ll see further in this review, extra features don’t always make for a better gaming experience.

Lenovo Legion Go review: Design

The Lenovo Legion Go might be a Steam Deck rival but it looks a lot like a Nintendo Switch . That’s thanks to its slim bezel, kickstand on the back and detachable controllers. Despite the similarities, the Legion Go looks more sophisticated compared to the toy-like Nintendo Switch.

At 11.8 x 5.15 x 1.61 inches, and weighing 1.88 pounds with the controllers attached, the Legion Go is relatively large and in charge. However, despite its size, the Go is surprisingly light when you pick it up with excellent weight distribution (just like the Steam Deck). Its plastic chassis feels sturdy, and while the whole thing is smooth to the touch, I never felt like the device would slip from my hands.

But while the Legion Go isn’t as heavy as it looks, it can feel quite heavy after extended use. To counter this, I like flipping the kickstand open, setting the handheld on a desk, and playing it while keeping the controllers attached to the handheld, though I can detach them if I want. Before you ask, yes, you can also play the Switch this way. However, its thin kickstand — at least on the original model and not on the Switch OLED — makes it a cumbersome exercise. Not so with the Legion Go. The built-in kickstand is a true winner.

Port-wise, the Legion Go sports a pair of UBC-C ports, a microSD card slot and a headphone jack. The Legion Go’s included hardshell case has an opening along its bottom that perfectly aligns with the handheld’s bottom-side USB-C port. Because of that, you’re able to charge the unit while it’s in its case — huge for convenience.

The Legion Go might look imposing, but its overall design is both elegant and smart.

Lenovo Legion Go review: Display

The 8.8-inch display is, quite literally, one of the Legion Go’s biggest features. It looks enormous compared to the 7-inch displays of the Steam Deck, Asus ROG Ally and AyaNeo 2S . Plus, the aforementioned competitors can’t match that 2,560 x 1,600 resolution and 144Hz refresh rate.

Games like Cyberpunk 2077 , Doom Eternal and Marvel’s Spider-Man look phenomenal on the Legion Go’s enormous screen. The display isn’t OLED but there’s good contrast between darker and lighter elements. Colors were vibrant, and the sharp resolution allowed me to see fine detail in the games’ environments. None of these games could take advantage of the 144Hz refresh rate, but at 60 frames per second (FPS), they all ran smoothly.

Our lab tests corroborate my anecdotal experience. When we aimed our Klein-10 colorimeter at the Legion Go’s display, we found that it averaged 476 nits of brightness. That’s a little below the advertised 500 nits, but still plenty bright. In contrast (pun intended), the Asus ROG Ally averaged 465 nits of brightness. However, the new Steam Deck OLED outshined them both at 597 nits of brightness.

In terms of color saturation, the Legion Go achieved 151.8% of the sRGB color gamut and 107.5% of the more demanding DCI-P3 color space (closer to 100% is best for both). Color accuracy-wise, the screen scored 0.21 on the Delta-E test (closer to 0 is best).

The Asus ROG Ally (108.6% / 76.9% / 0.17) produced less oversaturated colors, but still looked great. Conversely, the Steam Deck OLED scored similarly to the Legion Go. However, its colors appeared bolder on Valve’s handheld thanks to its OLED display.

Lenovo Legion Go review: Performance

Decent gaming performance

The Legion Go we reviewed has the same AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme chip powering the high-end Asus ROG Ally. It also packs 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. With specs like that, you’d expect great performance. And while Lenovo’s handheld doesn’t entirely disappoint on this front, you’ll need to fiddle around with settings to get good overall performance for most games.

However, don’t expect the Legion Go to play games at 2,560 x 1,600 resolution at high frame rates. Even with the device’s performance mode enabled, the extremely well-optimized Doom Eternal ran at a poor 15 to 20 frames per second. Lowering the resolution to 1,920 x 1200 and setting the device's TDP to 30W (via settings) got the game running at an acceptable 30 to 45 fps.

Frame rates jumped to the mid-70s when I set the resolution to 1,280 x 800p. That resolution looks fine on a 7-inch display, but not on Legion Go’s 8.8-inch screen. The bigger display reveals the low-res textures in all their muddy glory.

Objectively, playing graphically demanding games at 1,200p at 45 frames a second on a handheld is extremely impressive. That’s something the Nintendo Switch can’t handle. But as I said, you’ll need to adjust both in-console and in-game settings to get decent resolution and frame rates. That’s a selling point for PC players, but average folks who just want to dive straight into a game might feel frustrated over the lackluster out-of-the-box performance.

Since the Legion Go has the same Ryzen Z1 Extreme chip as the ROG Ally, we saw similar performance to Asus’ handheld. Using their respective in-game benchmarks, Cyberpunk 2077 and Dirt 5 ran at 23 and 41 fps (respectively) at 1080p. In fact, except for Dirt 5, no game we benchmarked ran higher than 30 fps.

Since the Legion Go is a Windows 11 PC, we also ran it through Geekbench 6, which measures CPU performance. The Lenovo handheld notched a single-core score of 2,062 and a multi-core score of 9,627, though the Asus ROG Ally scored better (2,468 / 11,041, respectively). To put things in perspective, both handhelds performed on par with the MSI Cyborg 15 budget gaming laptop (1,851 / 10,674, respectively).

How do these scores compare to the Steam Deck OLED ? On Geekbench 6, Valve’s handheld scored 1,331 and 4,542 on single-core and multi-core (respectively). The Legion Go and Asus ROG Ally scored significantly higher in comparison — not surprising given how these machines utilize Zen 4-based AMD chips instead of the Steam Deck’s older Zen-2 APU.

Lenovo Legion Go review: Software

Like the Asus ROG Ally and AyaNeo 2S , the Lenovo Legion Go runs on Windows 11. That means you can run any game or program that’s Windows-compatible. As with those machines, Windows 11 compatibility right out of the box is a major selling point. But as I said in the intro, Windows 11 is both a strength and a weakness.

While you can easily navigate through the built-in Legion Space launcher with just controller inputs, the same isn’t true for most programs. That’s because Windows wasn’t made with controller inputs in mind — forcing you to use touch controls if you want to do anything outside Legion Space. Touch controls work well enough with Windows 11, but it’s frustrating using touch controls on a machine with buttons and analog sticks. Though you can use the right analog stick to move the mouse cursor, it’s a cumbersome experience at best.

Thankfully, navigating Legion Space is a breeze. This no-frills launcher lets you quickly jump into your games — connecting to various gaming services such as Xbox, Epic Games, Ubisoft Connect, Steam, GoG, Rockstar Social Club and Giants Software. You can also purchase games via Gamesplanet.com, which is an online retailer that sells games from various publishers. You’re also able to purchase Android games via the Microsoft Store.

The settings menu features a slew of customization options, including setting the device’s performance mode, display resolution, refresh rate and controller mapping. You can also customize the lighting effects (more on that shortly), view screenshots you snapped, check download status for games and more. The quick settings button gives you access to some of these options, but you get the full suite of settings in Legion Space.

Lenovo Legion Go review: Controllers

Right controller can function as a mouse

At first, the Legion Go seems to have the same controller layout found on other gaming handhelds and most gaming controllers. While that’s mostly true, a few extra buttons distinguish this system from its rivals.

With controllers attached, the Legion Go has four face buttons, four shoulder buttons, two analog sticks, a d-pad and four function buttons — a fairly standard fare for handhelds and controllers. On top of that, each controller has two buttons on their respective backs that act as back paddles/bumpers similar to the Xbox Elite controller . The right controller also has two extra buttons on its side and a small touchpad underneath the right analog stick. The right controller also has a scroll wheel.

When playing first-person shooting games, you can enable FPS mode on the right controller and then place it on an included controller base to use the controller as a pseudo mouse. Lenovo says the optical eye on the bottom of the controller gives you more precision and control. In practice, I felt less in control since movements feel too sensitive. While you can adjust aiming sensitivity in a given game to offset this, it’s not worth the trouble considering how weird it feels using the controller like this. This mode is meant to facilitate web surfing, especially when you use the scroll wheel. But similar to gaming, this also feels weird and unnatural.

Like the Nintendo Switch, you can play games with controllers detached from the handheld. This is particularly useful for those who might have problems holding the large device, or who simply want to sprawl on their couch (or bed) while gaming.

Lenovo Legion Go review: Gaming library

Supports Windows-compatible games

Since the Lenovo Legion Go is a Windows 11 machine, you can install games from a wide range of launches (like the ones listed above). You effectively have access to thousands of PC games on this small device. To dodge having to navigate Windows 11 on a small display, Legion Space organizes all of your downloaded games in its Library folder, which is very convenient.

As with the Asus ROG Ally and AyaNeo 2S, the Legion Go’s game library consists of titles you already own — which is also one of the Steam Deck’s selling points. Of course, you’re not just limited to Steam games.

Lenovo Legion Go review: Battery life & heat

If you hoped the Legion Go had stellar battery life, I have some bad news for you.

In our battery test, which involves continuous web surfing at 150 nits of screen brightness, the Legion Go lasted 4 hours and 06 minutes. On the graphically demanding PCMark 10 benchmark, which simulates how long a device lasts while gaming, the time dropped to 1 hour and 51 minutes. These results are comparable to gaming laptops.

How hot does the Legion Go get? In our standard heat test, which involves playing an HD video for 15 minutes, and then scanning the device with a heat gun, we found Lenovo’s handheld got as warm as 85.5 degrees on the underside, peaking at 103.5 degrees on the upper left corner of the screen.

Things heat up when playing games, with the screen reaching 97.5 degrees and the upper left corner of the screen peaking at 111 degrees. Generally, we consider temperatures over 95 degrees as being uncomfortable. However, since the handheld’s vents aren’t close to where you rest your hand, this shouldn’t be a problem.

Lenovo Legion Go review: Verdict

The Lenovo Legion Go differs from other Windows 11-based handhelds thanks to a larger display and detachable controllers. And at $699 to start, it’s a direct competitor to the Asus ROG Ally, which lacks the former’s distinctive features.

Though I appreciate Lenovo’s efforts with the Legion Go, it doesn’t deliver the seamless experience I look for in a handheld. Doing anything outside of the Legion Space launcher is clumsy since most Windows programs don’t recognize button inputs.

While the Legion Go’s performance is comparable to the ROG Ally, neither provides a massive leap over Steam Deck unless you lower the resolution to 720p — which makes games look atrocious on the 8.8-inch display. And while (trying) to use the right controller as a pseudo mouse is interesting, it doesn’t function all that well.

For most people, the Steam Deck OLED is the better option over the Lenovo Legion Go. Valve’s device offers a richer display, better game optimization and an intuitive interface designed for the hardware. On top of that, even the high-end $649 Steam Deck OLED is more affordable than the Lenovo Legion Go.

Quibbles aside, if you’re a PC gamer desiring a unique handheld that offers the versatility of Windows 11, the Lenovo Legion Go is a safe bet. It’s arguably the best Windows 11 handheld out now.

The default setting for the ROG ALLY is 4GB and the default for the Legion Go is set to 3GB. Both are adjustable. Did you level set these devices and change the ALLY to 3GB or the Go to 4GB in order to fairly compare their performances? Also, why or how did you run the Steam Deck at 1080P when it is an 800P device? Are you sure you level set all these devices for this test as the results are very strange. But, with great power comes so-so battery life. The Switch can last up to five hours per charge depending on your screen brightness, and which game you’re playing. Complex, better-looking games will tax the system more, so you’ll get less playtime.

To combat this, you can hook the Switch up to a modern portable battery pack, which can recharge the system while you’re on the go, so you won’t have to wait to plug it into an outlet. We like this one from Anker.

Note: If you want a Nintendo Switch that’s more portable, we recommend the Switch Light , which has a smaller screen, no detachable Joy-Con, no TV connectivity, but better battery life. It’s available for $199.99 .

2. Asus ROG Ally

The Asus ROG Ally — which is on sale for $399.99, or $200 off its list price, at Asus.com — is a handheld gaming PC that’s surprisingly lightweight with a premium feel in the hand, especially when it comes to its clicky inputs. But don’t let its portable size fool you. This thing is a beast with a powerful and speedy AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme Processor, 7-inch touchscreen display, 16GB of memory paired with up to 1TB of on-board storage (expandable with microSD card), four action buttons, two analog sticks, four trigger buttons, two back buttons and more.

It even runs the full version of Windows 11 for multiple gaming platforms, such as Steam, Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Epic, RetroArch and much more. Now you can play just about any PC or Xbox game on-the-go.

3. Lenovo Legion Go

Starting at $699.99, the Lenovo Legion Go is a massive handheld PC gaming console with a gigantic 8.8-inch QHD at 1600p touchscreen display — by far the biggest handheld on this list. It runs full Windows 11, so you pretty much have access to any gaming platform, like Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Nvidia GeForce Now, Steam, and much more. The handheld is powered with the AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme with RDNA Graphics chip with 16GB of RAM paired with up to 1TB of on-board storage.

The first to market is still one of the best. It has up to 8 hours of battery life, which is quite impressive for a portable PC. The Steam Deck even comes a carrying case for easier portability.

On sale for $299.99 (reg. $349.99) Logitech G Cloud is a wallet-friendly handheld PC gaming console that can run Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, Nvidia GeForce Now, Steam and various Android mobile games and emulators. And thanks to its sharp 7-inch Full HD 1080p touchscreen display with 60Hz refresh rate and up to 12 hours of battery life per charge, you’ll have no problems playing your favorite games just about anywhere you’d like — especially since the handheld weighs in at just about one pound.

6. Razer Edge Gaming Tablet

Powered with the Qualcomm Snapdragon G3X (Gen 1) chip, the Razer Edge Gaming Tablet — which goes for $399.99 at Amazon — is a beast of a handheld gaming PC. It’s equipped with 6.8-inch AMOLED Full HD+ touchscreen display with up to a 144Hz refresh rate for buttery smooth performance on the screen. It runs Android with Razer’s Nexus overlay with a seamless experience getting to gaming apps, like Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, NVIDIA GeForce Now, Amazon Luna, and much more. It also comes with a slider wireless controller, which is also compatible with an Android smartphone via USB-C, to complete the mobile gaming setup.

7. New Nintendo 2DS XL

The “New” Nintendo 2DS XL is Nintendo’s handheld-only game console, and it’s still a great choice for playing games while you’re on the move.

Like the DS before it, the “New” Nintendo 2DS XL’ main feature is its dual screen design, which features a 4.88-inch display on top, and a 4.18-inch touch display on the bottom. This system differentiates itself from previous versions of the Nintendo 3DS (the two systems are part of the same family) by having a faster processor and second analog “nub” above the A,B,X, and Y buttons. The nub allows you to control the camera in some games, which makes the experience of playing games on a “New” 2DS XL more similar to a modern home console.

You can pick up your games on physical game cards or digitally through the “New” Nintendo 2DS’ eShop (original DS games are only available physically, and may take some hunting to find). The bundle we’re recommending comes with the system and a digital copy of Mario Kart 7 preinstalled.

If you plan on having a digital library, prepare to buy a MicroSD card. The 2DS has no internal storage, but ships with a 4GB MicroSD Card. 2DS games are smaller than Nintendo Switch games, but you’ll want at least 64GB of space to be comfortable.

Because the “New” Nintendo 2DS was designed exclusively with portability in mind, its size and battery life were clearly prioritized. The system itself is small enough to fit in a pocket, bag, or purse, and can last for up to seven hours per charge. That’s enough to get you through a cross country or cross continental trip.

The only place the “New” Nintendo 2DS suffers is its low-resolution display, which hasn’t aged particularly well. It doesn’t look bad by any means, but most of us gave gotten spoiled by the crisp, high resolution displays on our phones, computers, or tablets.

8. Hyperkin SupaBoy

The system plays actual Super Nintendo cartridges, so you’ll need your original games to play. There’s no internal storage on this system, so the library of games is limited to the cartridges you have. If you have the Super GameBoy accessory, you can also play titles from your GameBoy collection on this system.

There are two ways to play games on the SupaBoy : Use the buttons built into the system, or plug original Super Nintendo controllers into the ports on the front of the machine. There are two controller ports, so you can play multiplayer titles without a multi-tap adapter.

Hyperkin bundles the SupaBoy with a carrying case, wrist strap, and video out cables that let you play your Super Nintendo games on a TV. This makes it the equivalent of a retro-only Nintendo Switch. Its built in screen is only 4.3 inches wide, and allows you to play games in their original 4:3 aspect ratio. You can stretch the sprites to play your games in 16:9 wide-screen mode, too.

The company says it gets up to 10 hours of battery life per charge, which is more than enough time to play through a good chunk of a long Japanese Role Playing Game without having to stop. If your collection of Super Nintendo games has started to gather dust, and you want an easy, convenient way to play them on the couch, Hyperkin’s SupaBoy is a solid solution.

9. Backbone One Mobile Gaming Controller

You might not realize it, but you’re probably using a great handheld gaming system right now: Your smartphone. Whether you’re using an iPhone or Android device, both the App Store and Play Store are full of incredible games. Some games are even ports (a gaming term for version) of games available on dedicated gaming hardware.

The problem is that gaming on your phone’s touch screen doesn’t offer the same fidelity as a traditional controller, but you’re in luck. Both Apple and Android phones let you pair your phone with the Backbone One Mobile Gaming Controller — which goes for $99.99 at Amazon — over Bluetooth.

Yes, this requires you to carry an additional accessory with you, which is a little more annoying than hitting the power button on a dedicated handheld, but you already have the major piece of hardware. Smartphones have a lot of storage, huge digital game libraries and excellent battery life. You’ll burn more power playing games, but you’ll get a comparable amount of play time per charge.

It’s designed for gamers, so it’s ergonomic, and feels comfortable to hold for extended periods of time. Just slide in your iPhone or Android smartphone, connect via USB-C, and pair with Bluetooth to get gaming. It runs off the power from the mobile device itself, so it will last as long as your phone will let it. However, it does have power pass though, so you can plug it into a wall outlet and game at the same time, while also charging your phone too.

Size: The term handheld is objective because everyone’s hands are different, so what we mean is that these game systems are totally portable, and can run on battery power. What is remote streaming.

Remote streaming brings convenience to gaming while away from your usual gaming PC.

Remotely accessing a gaming PC is a fantastic way to avoid lugging your console or laptop around. It works by streaming the host’s video and audio output to the client, and then sending the client’s inputs back to the host. For example, you press buttons on the Kishi Razer attached to your phone, your remote PC executes those commands, and then you see your character jump, dodge, or whatever else you wanted them to do on your phone’s display.

It’s important to note that your remote streaming experience is entirely dependent on your network connections, both your Wi-Fi connection and your host PC’s connection. Most remote gaming services and remote desktop apps require at least 5 Mbps download and upload speed but recommend 15 Mbps or more. If you don’t have a fast enough connection, your stream will stutter and suffer from notable lag between host and client.

You will also experience lag depending on how far you are from the host PC. If you’re in the same building, the lag will be minimal. However, if you’re accessing a PC that’s across the country, it will add some lag as the connection travels thousands of miles and hops across multiple servers to relay the information. This is one of cloud gaming services’ major benefits: when you remotely access a PC on their servers, you will access a PC on the server closest to you at the time.

Use a remote desktop app

The key to gaming from a remote desktop app is to remain signed in and active.

Remote desktop applications connect your PC at home to whatever device you are trying to access it from. Technically, cloud gaming services are granting remote desktop access from your device to their host PCs, but remotely connecting to your own PC cuts out the middleman, meaning that you have total control over what you want to do.

The downside to remotely accessing your PC is that you must make sure your PC is always on and logged into whatever app you’re using to stream. If you plan to travel for more than a couple of days, make sure to turn off auto-sleep and to turn off automatic operating system updates at least until you return.

With Parsec, you can enjoy multiplayer, quality gaming.

Compared to Steam Link, Parsec is a much quicker and user-friendly experience. You don’t need to login on the client if you use your web browser, your host stays logged in on startup, and you can access some features that Steam Link can’t support (like pressure-sensitive inputs).

Stream your Xbox and PlayStation

If you prefer to game from your console, you can use it as a remote PC with each console’s remote play features. Xbox and PlayStation consoles both support remote access from a client device, like your phone or tablet, but they have the same constraints as remote PC access: You have to keep your console awake and signed into your Xbox or PlayStation account during the entire time you’re away. You also must make sure that remote access is enabled in the settings menu.

But there are limitations unique to console remote play. Browser, media, and streaming apps like the Blu-Ray player and Netflix are blocked on both Xbox and PlayStation remote play. With Xbox remote play, you can play games on Android, Windows, or iOS, while with PlayStation remote access you can also play on macOS.

Use a Cloud gaming service

When you use a cloud gaming service, you do not need to own your own host PC to stream from. Instead, you stream from the streaming service’s PCs, which are usually more powerful than most consumer PCs and have a fast internet connection. The graphics quality and framerate of the games you play will depend on the cloud PC’s specs. More expensive services can net you access to more powerful PCs—but these services are still much cheaper than getting an equally powerful PC for your home.

Though the GeForce Now is offered on multiple platforms, it puts a cap on gaming time.

But GeForce Now has a major drawback. You have a time limit on your sessions, and you can’t use apps or play games that aren’t supported. But it does have one of the most massive game libraries of the bunch, currently sitting at well over 1,100 titles and Nvidia adds more to that list every Thursday.

You can choose from three tiers: free, priority, and RTX 3080. You can only game for one hour at a time on the free tier, for six hours on the priority tier, and for eight hours on the RTX 3080 tier. Queues are also faster for the higher-end tiers. However, you can use back-to-back sessions with no limit.

Offered for a reasonable price, the XboxGamePass allows you to have up to 350 titles in your personal library.

The Intel Core i9-14900HX and Nvidia GeForce RTX 4090 Laptop GPU are powerful, though they admittedly don't offer a huge bump over previous generations. But with 128GB of RAM and 4TB of SSD storage there's plenty of room for games and more memory than you'll ever need for gaming. This would be a great machine for video editors.

Admittedly, the 14th Gen Intel Core processor doesn't have any huge performance gains over 13th Gen Core gaming laptops, but the Titan 18 HX did great in some of our most difficult tests, like running Cyberpunk 2077 on the Ray Tracing Ultra preset.

MSI is using a Cherry MX mechanical keyboard, which is clicky and comfortable. It's a luxury for typing and gaming, though it's unfortunate that MSI doesn't also use these switches for the number and arrow keys.

But the highlight is the 18-inch, mini-LED display, which covered 112.4% of the DCI-P3 color gamut in our testing and measured an incredibly bright 559 nits with our light meter. Games and movies look excellent on this HDR display. With the Titan, MSI has come as close to cramming a desktop into a laptop chassis as possible. It's for people who don't have room for — or don't want — a desktop. It's the best in many ways, assuming you can afford it.

The Acer's Nitro line has often a place on this list, mixing build quality, performance, and low pricing to create a reasonable product. The Nitro 16, replacing the old Nitro 5, delivers the entry-level power of an RTX 4050 and a Ryzen 5 7640HS, but with some niceties you can get for under $1,000. Our $999 review unit included a 1920 x 1200, 165 Hz display with G-Sync support, which is great for esports gaming. It's nice and bright at 371 nits on our light meter, and covered 91% of the DCI-P3 color gamut.

In our game testing, we found that the system is not the most powerful, but that it has enough power for today's games at the system's native 1920 x 1200. In almost every game we tested, the Nitro surpassed 60 fps.

We also appreciated that the laptop offered 8 hours and 24 minutes of battery life on our test, which beat other laptops in i's class — some by multiple hours.

The webcam isn't amazing, and Acer has a habit of putting too much bloatware on laptops that you'll spend some time uninstalling. But getting USB 4 under $1,000, alongside a solid screen and decent performance for the price makes this a great choice for someone whose budget it set at $1,000.

3. MSI Katana 15

The MSI Katana 15 is among our favorite gaming laptops for those with just $1,000 to spend. We tested a $999 model with a Core i7-13620H and Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050 offering strong 1080p performance, though you may have to turn down some settings in some games.

In our testing, the Katana passed 60 fps in most benchmarks at some pretty high settings, though some, like Red Dead Redemption 2 , were run lower. As games get more challenging, budget laptops won't run at the highest settings for long.

Even under $1,000, you get 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, which is nice to see, as those are often some of the first specs to get cut for a budget PC. Instead, the chassis is made of cheap plastic, but the internals should get the job done.

We also appreciated the Strix's battery life — it lasted for 8 hours and 49 minutes on our battery test, as well as the RGB keys with 2 millimeters of travel. The laptop's lid is aluminum, but the rest is plastic. In our time with the laptop, not once did we think the ROG Strix G16 felt cheap.

For under $1,500, you can get a 16-inch esports machine with a screen that also allows for high-resolution, intensive titles. The 2560 x 1600 display goes up to 165 Hz, which is fast enough for esports at 1080p, while the high resolution will make action games look great. Sure, some gaming laptops have faster displays, but they're often more expensive.

The "i" in 5i Pro stands for Intel. We tested with an Intel Core i7-13700HX along with Nvidia's GeForce RTX 4060. Our system also had 16GB of DDR5 RAM and a 512GB SSD. This model has an improved 1080p webcam over previous generations, which is good for working as well as gaming. We found that its SSD was fast in our testing, and it offered competing gaming performance. That being said, you may want to consider one of the best gaming headsets because there's plenty of fan noise and the audio quality isn't the best.

If you get an 18-inch laptop, it's likely a semi-permanent fixture on your desk. The Alienware m18 R2 is good for that, as it's pretty heavy at 8.63 pounds, but it also delivers strong gaming performance on a large, high-resolution display.

While a gaming laptop won't compete with a desktop for upgradeability, the Alienware m18 R2 is still impressive. When we opened it up, we found a slew of extra slots for M.2 SSDs, as well as slotted RAM, a replaceable Wi-Fi card, and, of course, the battery. The laptop is built solid, with plenty of aluminum along the frame (though that may be part of what makes it a bit heavy). Perhaps our favorite part is the Cherry MX low-profile mechanical keyboard, which is excellent for both typing and gaming. It's worth the $50 upcharge, and I wish all sorts of laptops had mechanical keyboard options. Unlike the MSI Titan, Alienware's mechanical keyboard covers every key. That's not to say we have no qualms. The display, while usable, isn't as bright as some of the OLED options out there. And while you're likely using a gaming mouse, the touchpad could use some love. But the build quality, performance, and upgradeability still make this one a winner in our book.

7. Alienware m16 R2

Many laptop companies have aimed to make gaming machines that look more like traditional PCs while still maintaining a bit of personality. These crossover laptops have often been lower on power, but we found that the Alienware m16 R2 offered strong gaming performance alongside its relatively muted design.

We were impressed with the build quality, including the frame but also the keyboard and touchpad, which we found comfortable to use in our testing.

Additionally, the m16 R2 has plenty of aftermarket upgradeability. When we opened the machine up, we were happy to see that the RAM, SSD, Wi-Fi card, and battery are user-serviceable. We do wish the display were a bit brighter and that Alienware would bring the price down on the most entry-level models, but in general, this is a well-built machine for work and play. It looks good just about anywhere.

If you want something smaller, we also tested the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14 and the HP Omen Transcend 14 , but we preferred the is larger PC because it delivers more graphics power.
