What is a 'teacher-guided' tour?

Our fall field trips are teacher/chaperone guided meaning as the teacher or chaperone you are leading your students around the farm. Groups will be given a time to get on the trolley to go to the pumpkin patch and other guideline for going about the farm. Groups are allowed to move about the farm as you please either in your class/group or in smaller groups. All groups are required to be in the presence of a teacher or chaperone at all times.

Do we need to fill out and bring the teacher/chaperone form?

We do require you to have the teacher/chaperone form signed and filled out to hand in to us when you arrive. The purpose of this form is for teachers and chaperones to know and acknowledge their role and responsibilities while attending Pinehaven Farm for a Field Trip.

Do we need to fill out your parent consent form?

The parent consent form that we provide can be used if you do not have your own. If you have your own, we do not need a copy.

What happens if it rains, or rain is forecasted for the day of our field trip?

The Farm generally remains open during periods of light rain and/or snow. With that in mind, all activities are outside so please instruct your students to dress for the weather, no matter what weather is being predicted. If there is a high probability of heavy storms on the day of your visit, then you may request to reschedule your field trip for another day up to 24-hours in advance of your visit. Please email us with weather related requests to reschedule.

Will there be food and/or drinks available to purchase?

During fall field trip hours of 9am -2pm, there will not be food or drinks available for purchase. We do have a candy store that is open select days after 12pm, but selection is limited to candy, snacks, and drinks. We also do not have a drinking fountain on site, so please plan accordingly.

I have a student that has a season pass. Can they use it for our field trip?

A child’s season pass may not be used for a classroom field trip, Monday through Friday, 9am to 2:00pm. This is because the cost of the field trip is for lessons and takeaways like pumpkins and food for the animals.

Can siblings of students attend the field trip if their parent is a chaperone?

Siblings of your student may attend the field trip if they have your permission. If they are age 3 and over they may pay separately with the parent at the Admissions Barn if you prefer not to include them in your count. Ages 2 and under are free, and will not receive a pumpkin.

We are excited to share a new way to enjoy our Fall Field Trips!

Our new self-guided field trips allow your group to be more flexible. Before your field trip, you will get an email with a map of our field trip stations along with brief descriptions of the areas. Our stations are the same as the rotations we've offered previously, but you'll have the freedom to explore the farm in whatever order you prefer!

Our stations are:

  • Farm Talk- One of our farmers gives a 15 minute talk about the history of the farm and the wonderful world of pumpkins, as well as the responsibilities that come with being a farmer.
  • Animals- Say hi to our farm animals, which include cows, sheep and lambs, goats, bunnies, chickens, and even an alpaca!
  • Hayrides- All field trip attendees get a free hayride that shows off our pumpkin fields and a beautiful view of the valley.
  • Pumpkin picking- All field trip attendees get to pick a free sugar pie pumpkin of their own to take home.
  • Activity Areas- We have multiple play structures, slides, and activities for your group to enjoy.

It takes roughly 90 minutes to explore all of our stations. Since the field trips are self-guided, you can make it as long or as short as you'd like.

We collect payment for field trips upon arrival. Payments can be made with cash, check, or card. We suggest designating one person in your group to collect payment beforehand to ensure the check-in process runs smoothly.

Farm Activities

Experience the Farm

Farm Animals

Visit the Animals

On our farm we have many animals: pigs, a llama, alpacas, cows, goats, rabbits, turkeys, chickens, sheep and more! Children love to check out the farm animals and the animals love the attention!

Hay Ride at Plumper Pumpkin Patch & Tree Farm

Tour the Farm

Take a scenic hayride though our Christmas trees and into our upper field. The pay off is at the top of hill, when you look down at the full spread of the farm and valley below. Our custom built wood trailer is pulled by one of our tractors and has a real down home farm feel. The trailers are also covered, so you can take refuge from the Oregon rain if needed.

Farm Activities - Slides & Mazes

Play on our mazes and slides. We have 5 tube slides, a rope spider web and 2 different mazes all suitable for children and adults to enjoy! Pick your very own sugar pie pumpkin to take home. Stay longer and play in our fallow field, or in our play structure and tire garden.

Weather on the Farm - Rain or Shine

We will conduct your farm tour rain or shine. We will do our best to customize your tour to fit the rapidly changing weather here in Oregon, and we do have many covered areas. The farm talk inside our barn and the hay ride is covered. We also have several covered spaces for your group to gather to eat their snack or lunch.

Our best advice is to make sure that your group is dressed properly. Rain coats, umbrellas and rubber boots are always a good choice when rain threatens!

Food, Popcorn, Plumper Farms

Have lunch or a snack in one of our picnic areas. Apple cider and kettle corn are great options for a snack here on the farm, bring your own smaller containers to split up the large containers we sell.

Treat your group to a colorful harvest experience!

School Buses

School Buses

Sometimes school buses coming from the south prefer to avoid the sharp curves of Old Cornelius Pass Road below the farm.

An alternate route is to take Cornelius Pass Road to the top of the hill at Skyline Boulevard, turning left/west. Then turn left/south at the quick stop sign and then turn right into the driveway a quarter mile from the last turn.

How to Choose A Pumpkin

There are three main types of pumpkins: carving, gourds, and baking or pie pumpkins. The type of pumpkin you need will depend on what you will do with it.

You will want to ensure the pumpkin patch you visit has the type of pumpkin you want. Will you be carving, decorating, baking, or using pumpkins for the educational activities listed in the next section?

If you want to make homemade pumpkin puree , you will want to choose a small 8 to 10-inch sugar pumpkin. Sugar pumpkins are sweeter than other pumpkins and have been developed for eating. Look for a firm pumpkin with no soft spots or signs of any rot. A few more pumpkin recipe ideas are listed below.

If you are carving your pumpkins or decorating them in some way, look for a visually appealing pumpkin without any soft spots or signs of rot. Choose a pumpkin with a stem and ensure it sits how you want it to when placed on a flat surface.

You will also want to choose a color and shape that will work for the design you have in mind. Pumpkin carving ideas and no-carve decorating ideas can be found below.

Make sure to grab an extra pumpkin or two to try some fun pumpkin activities for kids listed in the next section!

Cool article for pumpkin patches. You mentioned you should try to find out if the pumpkin patch has pumpkins you are looking for. It sounds important to research different types of pumpkins before hand so you have a better idea of what you should look for.

' src=

Yes, it is Taylor.

I think most pumpkin patches that are open to the public have carving pumpkins available. But if you are looking for pumpkins to bake with it is important to make sure the pumpkin patch has sugar pie pumpkins!

This is a really good idea. We have just concluded a month long unit study on Halloween and pumpkins today. As part of the unit study, I took the twins to a pumpkin patch and read stories about pumpkins as well. We even had our own version of a culinary bake off with pumpkins. And we did some math related to pumpkins too. I even had the children participate in some fun science experiments that revolved around pumpkins.

To wrap things up, I finished by allowing both kids to do some art with pumpkins. Next time I’m going to have them write a recount about their trip to a pumpkin patch. And make a mini fact file. The kids loved it. I made pumpkin soup and pie. We even tried making pumpkin crumble. It was lovely!

Wow, Leah! That sounds like you had an amazing time learning about pumpkins… Well done!

Simplifying Home and Family

Fall Field Trip: Pumpkin Patch

I love autumn. Out of the entire year, I hold my breath for crisp cool fall mornings, pumpkin everything, and a house that smells like baked apples which I may feed to my children a bit too often in the fall. I missed fall so much during our time in Florida . The oppressive heat of summer nearly all year round is not my idea of fun. My heart sings knowing we are approaching fall for the first time in years. Our last fall was in Kansas where trees are a bit sparse but, we still had so much fun. I can’t wait to go on our field trip to the pumpkin patch this year. Every homeschool family should visit one.

Fall field trip: pumpkin patch

A trip to the pumpkin patch was always the highlight of the season for us before Florida where it was too hot to get into the season. We found so much joy exploring corn mazes, riding in wagons full of hay, and picking the perfect pumpkin that would undoubtedly become part of a meal in a few weeks time.

Looking for a fall field trip? Check out a pumpkin patch.

The pumpkin patch is a great place to bond with your family. When in a corn maze is a great way to bond with loved ones. Wondering around and running out all of your children’s energy, They always sleep well after.

Pick your own pumpkins on this exciting pumpkin patch field trip.

Picking a pie pumpkin is a great option. Kids can carry them easier, you can paint them instead of carving. Then on November first we wash them and turn them into pumpkin puree. From there they become pumpkin bread, pumpkin spice rolls, pumpkin pie pancakes , pumpkin syrup. and so much more.

Explore the petting zoo at your local pumpkin patch.

Most farms you would go picking pumpkins at will have a petting zoo perfect for spending time with the kids. They never forget the joy in meeting farm animals up close and personal.

If you are still planing your fall field trips this would make a great addition to your list. Track your field trips with our Free Field Trip Log  and find lots of fun stuff to go with this field trip including Pumpkin Sensory Play DIYS and easy crafts with FREE pumpkin prinables .

The 15 to 25 lb. dark orange fruit have good ribbing and a round to flattened shape. Magic Wand has a larger vine than Magic Lantern, but it carries intermediate resistance to powdery mildew. Refer to the pumpkin chart for spacing recommendations.

Rhea pumpkin makes a great compliment to its larger brother Cronus . Large vines, which have intermediate resistance to powdery mildew, produce good yields of 20 to 30 lb. pumpkins. The fruit have a flat-round shape, a rich dark orange color, and strong, thick, dark green stems. Rhea has well defined ribs, great eye-appeal and excellent uniformity for shape. This pumpkin variety is a hit for roadside stand or wholesale sales.

In Conclusion

There are hundreds of amazing pumpkin varieties to choose from but your specific situation will determine which variety is the best for you!

Connecticut Field Pumpkin Growing Guide

Thomas Nelson

The Connecticut Field pumpkin is a traditional variety of pumpkin that has been grown in the United States for centuries. It is one of the oldest and most popular varieties of pumpkin that is commonly used for carving, cooking, and decorating during the fall season.

The Connecticut Field pumpkin is known for its large size and bright orange color, making it a popular choice for Halloween decorations. In this blog post, we will explore the history, characteristics, and uses of the Connecticut Field pumpkin.

What is a Connecticut Field pumpkin?

Connecticut Field pumpkin is a type of pumpkin that is widely grown in the state of Connecticut in the United States. It is a large, round, and slightly flattened variety of pumpkin that is known for its hardy nature and its ability to withstand harsh weather conditions.

This pumpkin is typically orange in color and has a smooth and slightly ribbed exterior. It is also known for its thick and meaty flesh, which is perfect for cooking and baking. Unlike other types of pumpkins, the Connecticut Field pumpkin is not very sweet and has a more subdued flavor, which makes it perfect for savory dishes.

The Connecticut Field pumpkin has been grown in Connecticut for centuries and was once a staple crop for farmers in the region. Its hardy nature and long shelf life made it an ideal crop for storing over the winter months, providing sustenance for families during the long, cold winters.

Today, the Connecticut Field pumpkin is still a popular crop in the region, and it is widely used in a variety of dishes, including pumpkin pies, soups, stews, and even roasted or grilled as a side dish. Its versatility and rich flavor have made it a favorite among chefs and home cooks alike.

How to start Connecticut Field Pumpkin seeds

Growing pumpkins from seed is an incredibly rewarding and relatively easy gardening endeavor. With the right preparation and care, anyone can experience the joy of watching these vibrant vines produce bountiful, colorful pumpkins. Starting pumpkins from seed allows you to choose from a wide variety of shapes, sizes, and colors to suit your preferences.

Growing & care

Caring for pumpkins is remarkably straightforward, making it an ideal choice for both novice and experienced gardeners. Once established, pumpkins require minimal maintenance.

  • Transplanting: When the danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed up, transplant the pumpkin seedlings into your prepared garden bed or large containers. Ensure they are spaced 3-5 feet apart to allow for proper growth and airflow.
  • Care and Maintenance: Water your pumpkin plants deeply and regularly, aiming for about 1-2 inches of water per week. Mulch around the plants to conserve moisture and suppress weed growth. Monitor for pests and diseases, and take appropriate action if necessary.
  • Pollination: Pumpkins require pollination for fruit set. Bees and other pollinators are crucial for this process. To encourage pollination, avoid using insecticides that could harm pollinators and consider hand-pollinating if necessary.
  • Fertilization: As the pumpkin plants grow, provide them with regular feedings of balanced fertilizer according to the package instructions. This will help support healthy foliage growth and fruit development.
  • Pruning and Training: Control the growth of your pumpkin vines by gently pruning back excessive foliage. This promotes better airflow and directs energy towards fruit production. Use trellises or supports to train the vines if desired.
  • Harvesting: Harvest pumpkins when they reach their full color, have a hard rind, and the stem starts to dry out. Cut the pumpkins carefully from the vine, leaving a few inches of stem attached. Handle them gently to avoid any damage.

Common pumpkin pests and diseases

Growing pumpkins can sometimes encounter a few common problems. Here are some issues you may face and their corresponding solutions:

  • Powdery Mildew: This fungal disease appears as a white, powdery coating on the leaves, causing them to wither and die. To combat powdery mildew, ensure proper spacing between plants for good air circulation. Apply fungicides as a preventive measure or use organic treatments like neem oil or a mixture of baking soda and water.
  • Squash Bugs: These pests feed on the leaves, causing wilting and stunted growth. Handpick and destroy the bugs or use insecticidal soap to control their population. Placing floating row covers over young plants can prevent squash bugs from laying eggs.
  • Vine Borers : The larvae of squash vine borers burrow into the stems, leading to wilting and plant death. Cut open the stem, remove the borer, and mound soil at the base of the affected plant to encourage rooting. Applying row covers early in the season can help prevent adult borers from laying eggs.
  • Blossom End Rot: This physiological disorder manifests as sunken, darkened areas on the blossom end of the fruit. It is caused by calcium deficiency or inconsistent watering. Maintain consistent soil moisture levels, provide adequate calcium through organic amendments, and mulch around the plants to regulate soil moisture.
  • Poor Fruit Set: Insufficient pollination can result in poor fruit development. Encourage pollinators by planting pollinator-friendly flowers nearby. In the absence of sufficient pollinators, hand-pollinate by transferring pollen from male to female flowers using a small brush or cotton swab.
  • Overwatering or Root Rot: Excessive watering or poorly drained soil can lead to root rot and plant decline. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings, and improve drainage by amending the soil with organic matter or growing pumpkins in raised beds.
  • Weeds: Weeds compete for nutrients, water, and sunlight, hampering pumpkin growth. Regularly weed around the plants to minimize competition and maintain a weed-free zone.

Remember to monitor your plants regularly, catch problems early, and apply appropriate treatments promptly. By implementing these preventive measures and taking swift action when needed, you can address common pumpkin-growing problems and enjoy a successful harvest.

When to harvest Connecticut Field pumpkins

Connecticut Field pumpkin is a popular variety of pumpkin that is widely grown in the United States. This variety is well-known for its large size, sweet flavor, and versatility in cooking. If you are planning to grow Connecticut Field pumpkin in your garden, it is important to know when to harvest them.

Connecticut Field Pumpkins are ready for harvest approximately 110 days after they germinate. Here are some tips to help you determine the right time to harvest your Connecticut Field pumpkins.

Observe the Color

One of the easiest ways to tell when your Connecticut Field pumpkins are ready for harvest is to observe their color. When the pumpkins are fully mature, they will have a deep orange color. If the pumpkins are still green or have a lighter shade of orange, they are not yet ready for harvest.

Check the Skin

Another way to determine the maturity of your Connecticut Field pumpkins is to check the skin. When the pumpkins are ready for harvest, the skin will be hard and tough. You should be unable to puncture the skin with your fingernail. If the skin is still soft, the pumpkin is not yet mature enough for harvest.

Look for Signs of Tendrils Drying

Connecticut Field pumpkins typically produce tendrils that attach the pumpkin to the vine. As the pumpkins mature, these tendrils will start to dry up and turn brown. When the majority of the tendrils have dried up, it is a sign that the pumpkin is ready for harvest.

Measure the Size

Connecticut Field pumpkins can grow quite large, often weighing up to 25 pounds or more. If you are looking for a smaller pumpkin, you can harvest them when they are around 6 to 8 inches in diameter. For larger pumpkins, wait until they reach their full size before harvesting.

In conclusion, harvesting Connecticut Field pumpkins requires a bit of observation and patience. By checking the color, skin, tendrils, and size, you can ensure that your pumpkins are fully mature and ready to be harvested. With the right timing, you can enjoy the sweet and delicious flavor of Connecticut Field pumpkins in your favorite recipes.

Uses for Connecticut Field pumpkins

Connecticut Field pumpkins are typically used for making pumpkin pies, pumpkin puree, and other seasonal pumpkin-based recipes. These pumpkins are also used for carving during Halloween, and their large size makes them ideal for carving intricate designs.

The Connecticut Field pumpkin is known for its sweet, nutty flavor which makes it a popular ingredient in baking. The flesh of the pumpkin is ideal for making pie filling, as it is rich in natural sugars and has a smooth texture. The pumpkin’s seeds can also be roasted and used as a healthy snack.

In addition to culinary uses, Connecticut Field pumpkins are also used for decorative purposes. Their iconic orange color and large size make them a popular choice for Halloween decorations, and they are also used as centerpieces during Thanksgiving celebrations.

Overall, Connecticut Field pumpkins are versatile and have a wide range of uses. Whether you’re baking a pumpkin pie, carving a Halloween decoration, or using them as a decorative centerpiece, these pumpkins are a great addition to any fall celebration.

15 Ohio Pumpkin Patches & Farms

Whether you want to pick from a pile or head out into the field yourself, these patches and farms across the state are packed with pumpkins and other fall delights this time of year.

Sept./Oct. 2021 BY Ohio Magazine Staff | Photo courtesy of Blooms & Berries Farm Market

Blooms & Berries Farm Market, Loveland This fourth-generation farm has been worked by the Probst family since 1937. In 1999, David and Cathy Probst returned to the land, fired up an old 1957 tractor and — starting with 5,000 strawberry plants — reinvigorated the place to make it what it is today.

Like many local farms, Blooms & Berries Farm Market in Loveland is so much more than a place to buy pumpkins. It’s become a day trip destination onto itself. Yes, visitors can purchase all sorts of pumpkin varieties, but they can also explore a 5-acre corn maze, jump on a pumpkin-shaped bounce pad, taste fresh apple cider and caramel apples, check out the farm animals and duck races, take hayrides and more. Blooms & Berries Farm Market also sells pumpkin breads, fresh-baked pies, cookies and candy. There’s fun autumn decor in the Market Barn, where you can also buy local meats, honeys and maple syrups, goat milk soap, lotions and seasonal produce. In addition to its usual annuals, perennials, herbs and succulents, the market’s Garden Center offers fall favorites like mums, corn shocks, straw bales and fall blooming flowers. Enjoy a weekend beer garden with craft beers and wine. “Fall is particularly special for families,” says owner Jeff Probst, the son of David and Cathy. “Enjoying the sunflowers on the hayride trail, sharing a caramel apple cider float or getting lost with your kids in the corn maze during a beautiful fall day are memories that will be cherished by all.” 9669 St. Rte. 48, Loveland 45140, 513/697-9173, bloomsandberries.com   ---

Lynd Fruit Farm offers pumpkin picking on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, typically starting the last weekend in September and running through most of October. “We usually can’t quite make it to Halloween with our pumpkins,” Lynd says with a laugh. Virtual Pumpkin Patch Field Trip

virtual-pumpkin-patch-field-trip

A Virtual Pumpkin Patch Field Trip is perfect, especially during the fall season. Let’s go on a  trip to a pumpkin patch. A Virtual Pumpkin Patch Field Trip is the BEST fall activity for your students.

Happy Fall Y’all! Here in the south, we love fall. I especially love the fall season and all the fun activities and beautiful weather it brings. I can tell my students do too.  As teachers, we are able to implement so many fun components to our classrooms, standards, and curriculums especially classroom décor and coordinating fall-themed activities. I mean, it’s every teacher’s dream is to find super engaging lessons that are also cute!

Virtual field trips are perfect to implement in the classroom. Whether you are able to take field trips away from school or not, virtual field trips are still a great option and can be implemented in many different ways. You can implement it for Fun Friday or choose a standards-based field trip. Personally, standards-based virtual field trips are my favorite because I feel you get the most bang for your buck.

Students get to experience places and things they otherwise never would, plus the experience is directly related to the standards. Oh wait, I forgot the BEST part...with all the virtual field trips you find here, the work is done for you!

Travel virtually with your students to explore an amazing pumpkin patch in California. The narrator educates students on pumpkin sizes, shapes, and colors. The cool and interesting facts students will learn are directly related to the Pumpkin Patch Virtual Field Trip resource . Students will learn so much about pumpkins. They will learn the life cycle of a pumpkin and learn how a pumpkin grows in all colors, shapes, and sizes. My students also think the life cycle of a pumpkin is interesting and enjoy this unit. If you really want to step up the unit, bake pumpkin seeds for student's to taste. You also can purchase or bake homemade pumpkin pie for student's to try. My students love this tasty treat. When I started incorporating pumpkin pie into this unit, I was very surprised at how many students had never eaten it. It's a cool memory for the first time students taste it to be with their favorite teacher!

Virtual Pumpkin Patch Field Trip Extensions

I wanted to share with you a few suggestions for extensions. If you have a local pumpkin farm, Walmart, or grocery store nearby, ask for donations of pumpkins. You may also ask parents to send in a pumpkin with their child if you have good parent support.  If possible get one for every student. Allow students time to decorate their pumpkin and take it home.

If getting a pumpkin for every student isn’t possible, grab a couple of different shapes and sizes of pumpkins for your classroom. This is great so students can smell and touch the pumpkin. If time allows, cut the pumpkin open so students can see and touch the seeds and guts on the pumpkins.

To go the extra mile, roast pumpkins seeds for your class. You also can order roasted pumpkin seeds from Amazon. Yes, Amazon has everything and I am thankful!

I don't know about you but I love this time of year. The fall season offers so many fun activities that can incorporate inside and outside of the classroom. Student are energized from summer break. I also love the idea of fall festivals, pumpkins, Halloween, Thanksgiving, leading up to Christmas.

Children's Books about Pumpkins

My students love books! I put together a great list of children’s books about pumpkins for you. My students love a good read aloud and the fall season offers so many fun choices that you can relate to content. Click the links below to shop on Amazon or watch a video recording of the read-aloud.

I hope you will implement a virtual pumpkin patch field trip and the other activities mentioned with your students!  They are sure to enjoy participating and making fun memories. I just know your students will enjoy the virtual field trip pumpkin patch as much as mine do!

Enjoy your trip!
