Planning a trip to Dubai ? It is a great destination at any time of the year, but if you’re heading there to experience something specific, then choosing the best time to go to Dubai is extremely important.

While most destinations experience their high season in the peak of the summer, Dubai is a little different. The summer months (June to August) are baking hot and humid, and being outdoors is unbearable. With temperatures reaching the 40s, hitting Dubai’s beaches or heading into the desert is simply not an option. 

Because of the limited outdoor pursuits on offer during summer, rates are at their lowest, so if you’re looking for the cheapest time to visit, then go in the summer. This is the best time to visit Dubai if you plan to hit the shopping malls – crowds of tourists are at their lowest and there are plenty of great sales to check out. 

Another consideration during the summer is the month-long period of Ramadan which usually falls during this time. During the holy month, it’s forbidden to eat, drink or smoke in public during daylight hours and many restaurants are closed. 

If you’re hoping to sample Dubai’s nightlife, you may want to avoid visiting during Ramadan. The dates for Ramadan change annually, so make sure to check before making your plans. 

Winter (November to April) in Dubai is the high season. The weather is sunny and warm, and perfect for being outdoors. Occasional rain can be expected, and the early mornings and nights can be cool, so pack a light jacket. If a desert safari is on your list, this is a great time to head out into the dunes. 

As one would expect from high season, it’s the most expensive time in Dubai and tourist crowds are at their peak. Relaxed beach holidays are best enjoyed over the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn. May and September to October offer mild weather conditions, warm sea temperatures, and crowd-free conditions. Prices on hotel rooms are also more reasonable at this time. 

You can enjoy most of the same wintertime outdoor activities at significantly lower costs and with fewer other tourists.

Best Time to Go for a Desert Tour

Desert tours are one of Dubai’s essential itinerary stops Because these trips are heavily weather dependant, it’s best to plan your trip for the winter months (November to March) when temperatures are much milder than in the scorching summers. 

This does mean you’ll be visiting Dubai during the peak season, so you’ll be among large crowds of tourists and will be paying peak season rates for flights and accommodation. 

If you’re planning on camping in the desert, then these times of the year can get quite chilly in the early morning and evening. There’s also a higher chance of rain – usually only brief showers, so make sure to pack something warm just in case (check out our Dubai packing list for more inspiration).

It is possible to head into the desert in the spring (April and May) and autumn (September and October). It’s likely to be more affordable at this time and much less crowded, if a little hotter. 

Desert tours usually take around three hours and can be enjoyed in the morning or the late afternoon. Both offer a unique experience, with the morning tours being more tranquil and late afternoons offering blazing desert sunsets. 

Because the days can warm up fairly quickly, this can impact the amount of time you have to enjoy activities on a morning trip, while the afternoon offers a more leisurely experience.  

Best Time to Go to Abu Dhabi

If you have time, you can take a trip from Dubai to Abu Dhabi by taking the direct train.

Abu Dhabi is the thriving capital of the United Arab Emirates. Offering visitors a range of experiences from desert adventures, world-class shopping, majestic architecture and magnificent natural landscapes, this diverse city offers a little something for everyone.   

Choosing the best time to visit Abu Dhabi will depend on what you’d like to experience. 

For the best weather, plan your visit over the winter months (December to March) when it’s not too hot or too humid. Because of this very pleasant weather, it’s a popular time to visit Abu Dhabi. This means you’ll spend more on accommodation at this time, and experience larger crowds of tourists at main attractions.  

Between June and August, you’ll experience much quieter conditions in the city and much cheaper hotel rates. The weather during the summer is extremely hot and very humid, making it almost unbearable and raising safety concerns to be outdoors for more than just a few minutes at a time, so sightseeing options may be limited to those that offer air conditioning. 

The shoulder seasons offer a great balance between the fantastic weather of peak season and the great prices of low seasons. April to May and September to October offer pleasant weather conditions, fewer crowds, and lower hotel rates. 

Visiting Dubai During Ramadan

Ramadan is a holy month for all Muslims when they abstain from eating and drinking between sunrise and sunset. It’s a solemn time of self-reflection, purification, and closeness with Allah. 

As a visitor to Dubai during this time, it’s important to show respect for the rules and customs, and adhere to any restrictions in place. 

For example, it is prohibited to eat, drink and smoke in public. While some restaurants and cafes will still operate, walking around eating or drinking is not acceptable and can carry a fine. If you must sip on water, it’s best to do so discreetly out of respect to those fasting.

Because this is a holy month, Muslims abstain from not just food, but most revelry and even sex. Be mindful of how you’re dressed – nothing too revealing or figure-hugging. Public displays of affection – kissing, hugging, holding hands with your partners – should be avoided as should playing loud music, shouting or swearing. 

If you’re hoping to enjoy some of the city’s nightlife, you’ll find things very much subdued to other times of the year. Tourist attractions and stores, while still operating, will adjust their operating hours, and certain mosques that usually offer tours to tourists may adjust their schedules. 

Most tourists are understandably nervous about visiting Dubai during Ramadan, but as long as you are respectful of the rules, there’s no reason you can’t still have an incredible time. And you’ll benefit from lovely low season rates and crowd-free conditions. 

Best Time for Sightseeing in Dubai

The ideal time for sightseeing in Dubai is when the weather is not too hot. The winter months (November to February) offer the ideal climate for being outdoors. It’s warm and mild, with an occasional chance of rain. 

However, this is also peak season, so will likely involve increased pricing on accommodation and crowded sightseeing conditions. 

The summer months are the worst time for sightseeing as it’s unbearably hot and humid, and being outdoors for even a few minutes is unpleasant. Activities at this time of year are reserved for those attractions and tourist spots with air conditioning. 

The best time to visit Dubai for sightseeing that strikes a good balance between crowds, climate and costs, is during the shoulder seasons of spring and autumn. Between April and May, and September and October, you can enjoy the costs and crowd-free conditions of the low season with the benefits of peak season weather – warm and mild.

Cheapest Time to Go to Dubai

The low season is the cheapest time to visit any destination. In Dubai, that means the summer months between May and August. This is when the weather is simply too hot to venture out of doors, and options for sightseeing are limited to those attractions that offer air conditioning.

The holy month of Ramadan also falls over the summer months. This leads many tourists to avoid travelling to Dubai, resulting in less people for sightseeing and some really great offers on Dubai hostel and hotel stays. 

Busiest Time to Visit Dubai

Dubai welcomes tourists all year round but because of the desert climate, certain seasons are not good for sightseeing at all, while others are better for hitting the beach. 

Dubai’s busiest season is the winter period between November and February. At this time, the weather is much milder than during the blistering summer months, and outdoor sightseeing is much more comfortable. 

Not only is this the busiest time to visit Dubai, but because of this increased demand, it’s also the most expensive and most crowded time to visit the city. Of course, if you do want to visit Dubai at this time, you can mitigate the costs slightly by booking well in advance. 

Weather in Dubai

Dubai is blessed with a desert climate, which means there are two very distinct seasons – winter and summer. Winter is hot and sunny, while summer is sweltering and humid.  

Summer generally begins in April and ends in early October. Hot winds and high humidity make the average maximum temperatures of around 38°C feel significantly hotter. There’s little chance of rain but the occasional dust storm can be expected. 

During the summer, being outdoors for even just a few minutes is unpleasant and outdoor pursuits take a backseat to any air conditioned activities. 

Conversely, the winter months between October and March offer warm weather in Dubai but not so hot as to be unbearable. This is the best time to visit Dubai for outdoor activities, like going to the beach and desert safaris, although precipitation is more likely. 

Most of the precipitation in Dubai falls over January and February, occasionally in the form of short thunderstorms. On average, daytime highs are around 22 °C. Mornings and evenings can be cool, dropping to around 12 °C.

Festivals in Dubai

Dubai is a modern metropolis that hosts some of the world’s top sporting events, as well as traditional celebrations and festivals, and premier shopping experiences. 

These festivals and events showcase this city’s ability to turn on the glitz and glam while still staying true to its heritage. 

• Dubai Shopping Festival

Shopping enthusiasts descend on Dubai in January to attend the Dubai Shopping Festival – the largest of its kind in the Middle East. Offering some incredible deals on everything, from fashion to jewellery and electronics, these bargains are unbeatable.

January in Dubai

January offers the lowest temperatures that Dubai experiences, with average highs reaching the low-to-mid 20s. It’s mostly warm and sunny but the occasional rain shower is not unheard of. 

Unlike other destinations that have their peak season in summer, winter is Dubai’s busiest time, so you’re likely to be among large crowds of other tourists and pay elevated pricing for accommodation at this time. 

February in Dubai

February sees temperatures increasing, with average highs consistently in the mid-20s, and sometimes closer to the 30s. There’s more likelihood of rainfall as the month progresses. 

The sunny skies and warm temperatures are ideal for outdoor adventures and beach days. The good weather also means there are more events and festivals at this time. 

For these reasons, it’s still peak season, and you can expect the beaches to be extremely busy. Large crowds of tourists are common at popular attractions, causing increased wait times and queues. Prices on airfare and accommodation are still high. 

March in Dubai

Warm seas for swimming and hot days make this the ideal time for a beach holiday in Dubai. Temperatures increase steadily, with average maximums in the high 20s, and the chance for rain decreases. 

As things get hotter, a word of caution around revealing clothing. If you’re heading to the city or a mosque, modest attire is recommended – shoulders and knees should be covered. 

It can still be fairly busy with tourists and hotel prices are still inflated. 

April in Dubai

Expect long, hot days during April with a low chance of rain. On average, daytime temperatures hover in the low 30s but can get much hotter. Being outdoors starts to become less appealing as the temperatures climb. 

Sea temperatures are lovely for swimming at this time, but if you’re hitting the beaches, remember to always wear good sunscreen as the sun can be brutal.

School holidays around the Easter holidays mean an increase in tourist numbers and crowds. 

May in Dubai

Most tourists have left and the city feels more pleasant to explore without the crowds. Hotel prices are coming down for the low season and you’re likely to pick up a great deal. 

The summer heat arrives and maximum temperatures average in the high 30s. It’s difficult to be outdoors for extended periods, so the beaches are fairly empty. Most people seek out relief in air conditioned venues. 

In response to the heat, it’s tempting to wear shorter and more revealing clothing but it’s recommended that, out of respect for local culture, women dress modestly. This is especially important if you’re visiting during the holy month of Ramadan. 

June in Dubai

The sweltering heat of summer continues to intensify, and with 12 hours of daylight, it doesn’t cool down much in the evening either. 

Average maximum temperatures are in the mid-30s and there’s very little chance of rain. You’ll most likely want to spend as little time as possible outdoors, seeking out the air conditioning of malls and hotels instead. 

The city is still pleasantly free of the large crowds of winter tourists, and hotels offer some really great deals. 

July in Dubai

The hottest month of the year is here, bringing average high temperatures of 40°C. It’s even too hot for lying by the hotel pool which feels more like bathwater and does little to cool you down. Most activities take place indoors in the blissful air conditioning. 

This is the cheapest time to visit Dubai, with hotel and flight prices dropping even further. Tourist attractions are mostly empty and there are few other tourists around. 

August in Dubai

August’s weather is much like July’s – hot and hot. Being outdoors for even just a few minutes is unbearable. 

The harsh weather keeps many tourists away and leads hotels to offer exceptional value deals to attract visitors. While it is hot and unpleasant outdoors, the city is well equipped for the heat and there’s still plenty to see and do indoors. 

September in Dubai

The oppressive heat finally starts to dissipate, with average maximums dropping into the high 30s. It’s possible to hit the beaches again in the mornings and late afternoons when it isn’t as hot, especially towards the end of the month. 

There are still few tourists around so sightseeing is pleasant and relaxed, and hotel prices are still attractive. 

October in Dubai

Temperatures are coming down and locals and tourists alike are venturing outside more. Average daytime temperatures are in the mid-30s and there’s very little chance of rain.

Tourist numbers start to increase again, but are still not at their peak, meaning sightseeing is still relatively crowd-free. 

November in Dubai

Average daytime highs are in the mid-20s and it’s much more pleasant to head outdoors. It’s mostly sunny and rainfall is rare. 

While the rest of the northern hemisphere is bundling up against the cold, visitors to Dubai can still spend lazy days on the beach. Because of this lovely weather, many visitors head to Dubai for relief from the cold. 

It’s now peak season, so in addition to increased tourist numbers, hotel prices are significantly higher. 

December in Dubai

The pleasant weather continues, offering average highs in the low-to-mid 20s. It’s more likely to rain this month, but that said, rainfall is still relatively low. Mornings and evenings can get chilly, so make sure to pack a light jacket. 

Tourist numbers steadily increase causing hotel prices to reach their peak. Having said that, it’s one of the top places around the world to spend December , so maybe that’s why!

Visitors tend to shy away from visiting Dubai over the holy month of Ramadan. While it’s true there are certain restriction and observances, it’s still a great time to visit, and offers a wonderful opportunity to experience Islamic traditions.

When is the Rainy Season in Dubai?

Dubai is not known for being a rainy destination. The city receives most of its precipitation in the winter months between November and March, and this usually falls in brief showers and occasional thunderstorms.

When is the Coldest Month in Dubai?

Cold is not a word that one would often associate with Dubai. The coldest month of the year is January which sees temperatures averaging around 20°C, sometimes reaching the mid-20s.

When is the Worst Time to Visit Dubai?

This all depends on what kind of experience you’re after. Generally, June, July and August are oppressively hot, so being outdoors is out of the question. That said, it’s the most affordable time of year to visit.  The winter months, while offering pleasantly mild weather, are the worst time to visit in terms of crowds – it’s the busiest time, and also the most expensive time to visit.

I disagree with you regarding June’s weather. I have been living in the UAE ever since I was born in Abu Dhabi in June of 1995. My experience in June’s weather in both cities, Dubai and Abu Dhabi is not so bad especially around early to mid-June. To tell you the truth, June is the best summer month to visit the UAE compared to July and August, because in June, although outdoor temperatures generally soar out to 45+ degrees Celsius outside during the day and lows of not less than 30 degrees celsius, but at least on some days in June, especially early June, you would still get some chance of pleasant weather similar to the shoulder monts April, May, September (even better than September), and October with highs of 37 degrees Celsius and lows of 26 degrees Celsius during the night. So no, I don’t think June is the worst month to visit Dubai or Abu Dhabi, in fact, June is the best month to visit Dubai and Abu Dhabi for Thrilling Rides and Activities, such as Skydiving in Dubai or visiting Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi.

At least in June weather is pretty much similar to September’s weather, you get a nice and crystal clear weather, even if it gets hot at 50 degrees, the night-time temperature and the mornings of June is even cooler than in September, as it is similar to May, hovering at around 25~28 degrees celsius, making it pleasant. Standing under the sun of course it feels boiling hot, but under the shade, it is breezy nice. Sometimes you sweat because of the increasing humidity as you approach July. Nevertheless, June is not a bad month to visit Dubai, in fact it is of the best months to visit the beach in early mornings or watch the beautiful sunset during the evenings at the beach. Average Sea temperature in June is 30 C which is cooler when compared to September of 32 degrees celsius, making June a better month for visiting the beach or going for a dip in the swimming pool. Hotels are at the cheapest levels in June, so you would get a great deal at this time. For best weather conditions in June, visit Dubai in the first two weeks of June or before the Summer Solstice (before June 21), as afterwards, the weather gets worse as you approach July. Between June 1st and June 21st would be a great time visiting Dubai, and Abu Dhabi.

July and August is by far I would say they are definitely the worst two months in Dubai, temperatures are sizzling hot, and even in the evenings and mornings, the temperatures barely hits below 30 degrees. Trust me, the weather conditions in July and August is far worse than June’s weather, especially the weather over there is far too humid, even standing in the shade feels like you are in the oven, and visiting the beach won’t give you much relief, as the Average Sea temperature is over 32 degees celsius, the maximum temperature the sea can cool you off during this intense heat, sometimes it goes up to 35~37 degrees celsius, making it an unpleasant time to visit the beach. Hotels are not so cheap either, since most of these hotels you can find are fully booked or reserved. Better avoid traveling to Dubai in July and August.

If you come from a climate similar to Dubai, or hotter, I think June will be a perfect month to visit. Otherwise, if you come for a cooler climate and cannot bear temperatures above 40 degrees celsius, then better avoid traveling in this period (May to September).

Although June is a summer month, I don’t consider it a low season. I would rather consider it part of the shoulder season instead, especially when it comes to the first 10 days of June, in fact, I would say the Best Time To Visit Dubai – April to June, September and October, and Best Time For Sightseeing – April to June, September and October

With its location in the Arabian desert, it's no surprise that Dubai has only two settings on its thermostat: warm and hot. In the months when much of the Northern Hemisphere is shivering, Dubai makes a great getaway for winter sun, but in the sweltering summer months, anyone who is brave enough to stay in the city is hustling between air-conditioned patches of cool.

High season: November to April

Best time for outdoor urban adventures

When much of the Northern Hemisphere is bundled up in hats and winter coats, Dubai is blossoming. Moderate temperatures bring in major festivals and events, and al fresco dining lasts late into the night. Accommodation rates are high. Outdoor activities and excursions into the desert are best done at this time of year.

Shoulder season: May, September and October

Best time for quiet beach holidays

The days are hot, and the nights are balmy. Because the winter crowds have disappeared, these months are good for quiet beach holidays, with sea temperatures averaging 82°F (28°C). Pleasant temperatures also mean it's still possible to camp in the desert.

Low season: June to August

Best time for budget travelers and indoor shopping

Here's a monthly guide to what you can expect through the year in Dubai. All events are subject to change.

January is a blissful month in Dubai. When much of the rest of the world is suffering post-festive season doldrums and icy conditions, the daytime temperatures in Dubai average a pleasant 77°F (25°C). January is still Dubai's coldest month, so bring a light jacket for evenings out. February in Dubai is another warm and winning month, with sun-kissed weather and plenty going on, including many outdoor events. Pack a pashmina for al fresco evenings. Key events:  Dubai Jazz Festival, Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, Dubai Food Festival

Dubai's weather in March might be heating up a fraction, but it is still near perfect in this action-packed month, with warm seas for swimming and enough of space on the sand. Key events:  Festival of Literature, Art Dubai, Sikka Art Fair, Taste of Dubai, Dubai World Cup, Middle East Film and Comic Con, Burj Al Arab Swim, Dubai International Boat Show

The spring weather in Dubai is still warm rather than blistering, but school breaks mean you’ll see more tourists around the Easter holiday. April is a rollicking good month for beach fans and fashionistas. Key events: Fashion Forward, Al Marmoom Heritage Festival, start of Ramadan in 2021 and 2022

In May, temperatures in Dubai can nudge 95°C (35°C) or more, and most visitors have cleared out in anticipation of the summer heat wave. Beach clubs and indoor shopping centers provide welcome relief during the day.  Key events: Al Gaffal Dhow Race

Summer has arrived, and it's already blisteringly hot outside. Life shifts indoors to air-conditioned malls and museums, and swimming in the sea or a hotel pool feels like sitting in a bathtub. Key events: Dubai Summer Surprises

July is the hottest month of the year in Dubai, and it's a scorcher, with average temperatures of 105°F (40°C). Flight prices and hotel rates drop significantly. You can really cool down at the city's snowy indoor slope, Ski Dubai . Key events:  Eid Al Adha in 2021 and 2022

Dubai is still roasting hot in August. Tourist attractions are generally empty, especially toward the end of the month when schools start up again.

Dubai's searing summer temperatures are slowly starting to drop, and it's a good time to be by the sea. Excursions into the desert are possible again, and the balmy evenings lend themselves to stargazing among the sands.

Temperatures in Dubai have started to cool nicely, although you can still expect humidity and toasty warm days in early October. The cooler nights are lovely for a stroll along the Dubai Canal and for dining outdoors. Key events:  Diwali in 2022

By November, the summer heat has subsided, and visitors from colder climes are returning to enjoy the balmy temperatures. Much of life moves outdoors. Key events: Diwali in 2021, Dubai Rugby Sevens, DP World Tour Championship, Global Village

The end of the year marks the beginning of the peak tourist season for a reason: the sea is still warm, the air is crisp and clear, and evenings are warm enough for outdoor dining. Key events:  UAE National Day, Dubai International Film Festival

A city with year-round action, but is there an ideal time to visit Dubai?  We look at the seasons and special events in 2024 that you may want to plan your travel to Dubai around.

Dubai doesn’t really work on traditional seasons of the northern hemisphere, moving from mild to hot to very hot to extremely hot! 

You are better off assessing Dubai on a spectrum of how much heat you can manage!

Some prefer the late spring when outside conditions are perfect for the beach, whilst others prefer the very coolest winter months of December to February , when there is a plethora of outdoor activities going on, though the beach may be too chilly and crowds are at their peak.

Dubai in the winter is a magical place to be. Packed full of seasonal outdoor events and plenty of hours of sunshine to enjoy with very limited rain.

The coolest months are January to February, where daily maximums usually reach 25°C/77°F, and overnight lows dip to 15°C/59°F.   The sea temperature in winter dips on average to 23°C/73°F, which can be a little chilly for some.

Midwinter festivities start from National Day in early December, accompanied by Rugby 7’s and Christmas (yes, even in a Muslim country, it’s still full of festivity). The mild weather sticks around until April; then things rapidly heat up by the end of May.

Winter is the best time of year to enjoy the Dubai desert too and outdoor adventures .

Life in Dubai largely moves indoors and to the evenings during the hottest months.  Peak summer temperatures can be as high as 50°C (122°F), though average in the low 40°’Cs.

It really starts to heat up by late April and peaks in August / September when the humidity also really kicks in.

Be mindful not only of air temperatures but sea temperatures which can rise to 32-35 ° C mid-summer – not exactly a refreshing ocean dip!  You’ll want to check that your accommodation has a temperature-controlled pool.

By October, the temperatures start to recede, and humidity drops, then by November, you are back to the mild and pleasant winter.

Yes! It might take you by surprise, but rain is possible over the cooler winter months (or it could stay completely dry!). Over the last 10 years, it has rained on average five days of the year. No need to pack an umbrella just in case.  If it does rain in Dubai, it’s best to stay put if you can until it passes. It’s unlikely to go on for days, but when it does rain, there’s most likely flash flooding, and driving becomes chaotic.

Yes! Dust or sand storms are a common occurrence in the UAE.  Maybe not the extreme that you see in the movies (looking at you, Mission Impossible!) But nonetheless, there can be a lot of dust in the air. In fact, Dubai often has a permanent hanging layer of dust spoiling the skyline.  You experience this less so in Abu Dhabi and the other Emirates. The problem in most of the UAE is the fine layer of dust that develops pretty much year-round. A hazard of being in the middle of the desert. Those with severe asthma and other respiratory conditions should keep abreast of the AQI if it’s dusty out.

We would joke that the only time Dubai has seen snow is when Ski Dubai arrived! It has, in fact, snowed in the Northern  Emirate of Ras Al Khaimah! The last time this was recorded on the country’s tallest peak, Jebel Jais, was in January 2020.  Jebel Jais in the Hajar Mountains can experience temperatures up to 10c cooler than the coast. In Dubai itself, though… very unlikely, but never say never! This is Dubai, after all.

As a Muslim country, as well as following the Gregorian calendar, the Hijri Calendar is observed.

Note that the weekend has recently changed from Friday/Saturday to Friday afternoon, Saturday & Sunday for the public sector. These days of the week are generally much busier than weekdays.

The main Muslim religious observances in Dubai and the UAE are:

• The Holy Month of Ramadan
• Eid al-Fitr
• Arafat Day & Eid al-Adha
• Hijri New Year
• Mawlid al-Nabi al-Sharif – the Prophet’s birthday

These dates move forward roughly ten days each year compared to the Gregorian calendar.  Actual dates are not confirmed until the moon is sighted, and the Government may move the actual dates that the public holiday is observed.

The UAE also celebrates

• New Year’s Day on 1 January annually
• Commemoration Day (previously marked as Martyrs Day on 30 November, then 1 December; there was no public holiday declared in 2023)
• National Day (recently changed to Union Day) on 2-3 December annually

Although not marked as public holidays, there are many international religious events that you will also find observed on a wide scale in the retail and hospitality industries in Dubai, including:

• Diwali in Dubai (1 November 2024)
• Christmas in Dubai (25 December 2024)

Ramadan in Dubai

It’s important to observe each year when the Holy Month of Ramadan – the 9th month on the Hijri calendar will occur (the start date changes by approximately 10 days on the Gregorian calendar each year).  This is a period of deep religious reflection for Muslims and is strictly observed.

Ramadan in 1445 will start approximately 10 March and end on 9 April 2024. 

The most important thing to observe is fasting, with no eating in public allowed, but also no public displays of affection, and ensuring the modest dress code is strictly followed. It can be a little confusing for visitors to know exactly what to expect, and rules and social norms are constantly changing.

We wouldn’t advise against visiting Dubai during Ramadan, far from it, but you will have a slightly different experience; joining in with iftar (the evening breaking of the fast) and overnight festivities such as suhoor and late-night shopping are great reasons to visit at this time of year.

The other thing you may observe is businesses and attractions closing during the day and only open in the evening. This happens less and less nowadays. Dubai has very much adopted a “business as usual” approach to Ramadan in recent years, aligning with the peak tourism season.

Visitors should be mindful when local school holidays occur in Dubai. 

Most Dubai schools work on a three-term school year from September to December, January to March, and April to June (though some Asian curriculum schools operate a different school year).

School holidays occur locally:

• Late March to early April
• Most of July & August
• Mid-December to early January

Some schools also have mid-term breaks in late October, mid-February, and late May.

If you visit at any of the peak school holiday times, expect hotel accommodation to cost more and attractions to be MUCH busier. At these times, you will want to book in advance and arrange for skip-the-line tickets if possible.

Seeing attractions earlier in the day, you will always encounter fewer crowds than in the evening; it is very much a stay-up-late and evening culture in Dubai, even for families.

• Trams:  Trams and metros are considered the same thing at times but they are completely different altogether.
• Metro is a transport system working on pre-planned specified routes via different lines. Whereas trams let the passenger travel to a few particular places only. When visiting Palm Jumeirah and Al Sufouh via Dubai Marina, the Dubai Tram is your go-to option.
• Metro:  Dubai Metro’s Red Line and Green Line cover Dubai International Airport to UAE exchange and Etisalat to Al Qusais Creek. Ease your Dubai travel with these routes.
• Abras:  Ever traveled in a water taxi? It’s Dubai’s proud tradition. It is a reasonable but exciting ride with a half boat and raft structure. 
• Bus:  Dubai’s buses are a combination of comfort and economy. With the usability of NOL cards, you can tour the whole city for a few bucks.
• Taxi:  Dubai’s regular cabs can be a true-blue mode of transport for you.

May 5 - FULL DAY DUBAI

FULL DAY DUBAI W/ATT        

Breakfast at the hotel. As a melting pot of culture and nations, this tour comprises both the traditional and the modern. Areas and sights included on this tour are: 

Photo Stop - Burj Al Arab : Enjoy a photo stop at the world-famous Burj Al Arab Hotel. Built on an artificial island, Burj Al Arab is an architectural wonder and a definite must-see on your visit to Dubai. 

Jumeirah Mosque : Photo stop at the Jumeirah Mosque, an architectural landmark in Dubai. 

Bastakia Area : Bastakia area to view the traditional wind towers and the old Fahidi Fort  

Dubai Museum : The Dubai Museum is located in the historic area and was built in 1787. Primarily used as the monarch's main residence, today it portrays glimpses of everyday life with interactive displays that visitors can enjoy. 

Abra Ride (Water Taxi) : Board one of the traditional local Abras (Water taxi) which is used till today to cross the Dubai creek.

Gold and Spice Souk : Located in the heart of old Dubai is the famous 

Gold and Spice Souk.  A walk through the bustling alleys affords you a wonderful experience - enjoy the dazzling gold and the beautiful aroma of the local spices.  

 At The Top - Burj Khalifa Floor 124/125 : Visit the World's tallest tower - Burj Khalifa - located in downtown Dubai. Enjoy the multi-media display showcasing how this incredible structure was built.  One can enjoy a spectacular view of the whole city through the telescopes on the observation decks. 

Palm Jumeirah : An architectural feat and a main landmark of Dubai.  The scenic tour includes a drive along the trunk and onto the final branch, overlooking the Arabian Gulf and the iconic Atlantis Hotel. 

Dubai Marina : The largest man-made marina in the world, where you can take pictures of luxury yachts and the modern high-rise towers and their unique architecture.  

Jumeirah Beach Residence : Short walk and a photo stop at what is also known as JBR. It's one of the trendiest residential communities with more than 40 residential Towers, Restaurants, Cafes, and a Public Beach.   

May 6 - DESERT SAFARI

May 7 - day at leisure.

Breakfast at the hotel, then spend the morning at leisure. 

Between 3pm – 3:30pm board your pre-assigned 4 x 4-land cruiser (6 guests per jeep) and head out on a journey that takes you over the rolling dunes through the beautiful and intriguing Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve.   

Next, your professional driver will deflate the wheels of the 4 x 4 for your fun and exciting dune-bashing ride. Feel the thrill of desert driving as your driver takes you up and down the golden dunes. Enjoy a beautiful desert sunset stop before continuing to the Bedouin Camp, where you are greeted with a traditional cup of Arabic coffee. You will have an opportunity to try riding a camel before it is time to settle down for your prepared BBQ dinner. Later, enjoy the Tanura dance and a belly dancer that will enchant you with her dances. A truly magical night! At 8:30 p.m., we drive back to the hotel.  

• Recommended Attire : Lightweight summer clothing is suitable for most of the year, but sweaters or jackets may be needed for the winter months, especially in the evenings. Good quality sunglasses are advised. Hats are advisable when in direct sunlight. 

NOTE : Dune bashing is not suitable for pregnant women and people with heart, neck, or back problems or who have had recent major surgery. Any guest not comfortable with dune bashing may go directly to the Bedouin Camp. 

May 9 - FULL DAY CRUISE IN KHASAB-MUSANDAM WITH LUNCH

Breakfast at the hotel. Enjoy the day at leisure. On your Own.

May 8 - ABU DHABI CITY TOUR

Breakfast at the hotel, Our Tour to the Capital Abu Dhabi Emirates will take us to explore the main sites and areas of the city such as:   

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque : As one of the world's largest mosques, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is an example of architectural styles from different Muslim civilizations and it is a place of worship and cultural diversity.  Initiated by the late president H.E. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan AL Nahyan, the founder of the UAE, the Mosque features 82 domes, more than 1000 columns, 24-carat gold gilded chandeliers and the world's largest hand-knotted carpet. 

Emirates Palace Abu Dhabi Hotel : Photo stop to this iconic hotel of Abu Dhabi with its charmful mix of Islamic & contemporary design. 

Stop at Abu Dhabi Corniche & Breakwater : Quick stop for fresh air and probably some photos at the corniche and the Breakwater of Abu Dhabi. 

Qasr Al Watan : "Palace of the Nations", or Qasr Al Watan as it is called in Arabic, is a working Presidential Palace and a majestic cultural landmark. Part of the Palace is open to the public to visit. It offers a look into the history of the nation, its traditions and its ties with other countries. The visit includes The Great Hall, the Spirit of Collaboration Room, the Library and the House of Knowledge, to name a few.   

Louvre and Ferrari World Photo stop : On the way back, drive through Saadiyat Island for Photo stops at the unique Louvre Abu Dhabi architectural building and then into Yas Island for another photo stop at the famous Ferrari World Theme Park (The world's largest Ferrari Logo). 

Return to your hotel for leisure and overnight.  

Breakfast at the hotel.  Pick up from your hotel in Dubai, drive east-northwards to Ras Al Khaimah.  Continue afterward to the border to cross into the Musandam Peninsula which is the northern part of Oman.  After crossing the border, we continue with our drive to Khasab city. At the Harbor, board the traditional Omani Dhow for a Full-Day cruise to Khor Al Sham.  

Upon entering the fjord (Khor), admire dolphin watching while they are racing with the cruise along the Khor. During the cruise the Dhow will anchor at Telegraph Island and Seebi Island, for an opportunity to enjoy swimming and snorkeling in pristine water teeming with friendly colorful fish.  

Soft drinks, fresh fruits, coffee/tea, and lunch onboard are available and included.  

After the Cruise, drive back to Dubai for overnight at your hotel.

• More than 91 days prior to departure loss of non-refundable deposits
• Between 90-61 days prior to departure 75% of gross tour price

It is strongly recommended that clients purchase cancellation insurance to protect themselves against cancellation due to illness prior to or during travel. In the event a traveler becoming ill during a tour and has not purchased insurance, all hospital and medical expenses are the traveler's responsibility. Based on Goway Travel’s current cancellation policies the passenger may incur up to 100% cancellation penalties and should protect themselves with cancellation insurance.  

Insurance MUST be purchased within 7 days of individual client deposits or payments being made and only covers non-refundable client money held by Goway Travel. If the group cancels prior to final payment and supplier fees being applicable, due to the required minimum numbers not being reached, the premium is refundable providing no claim has been made. In all other cases the premium is non-refundable. 

GENERAL INFORMATION

I. CURRENCY & PRICING FLUCTUATIONS

This proposal is based on the current exchange rate(s). Should there be considerable currency fluctuations, we reserve the right to apply any necessary surcharges. In the event of any additional fuel surcharges by the Land Suppliers and/or airlines, we reserve the right to add these to the costs of the land package and/or airfare. Any applicable increases will be advised in writing prior to final payment. Prices are guaranteed once final payment has been made.

II. GROUP DEFINITION

a) Land: A minimum of 10 paying adult passengers travelling on the same itinerary/ arrangements.

b) Air: For most airlines, a minimum of 10 paying adults departing on the same date and travelling to the same destination on the same flights. Return travel on the same date from the same destination, however, approximately 10-25% of the group size may be permitted to vary their return travel date depending on the airline rules. For deviations, the airfare is subject to current airfare levels and airfare guarantees do not apply.

c) Should the number of passengers fall below the required minimum (10), the booking will be deemed as F.I.T. Travel. Our F.I.T. department will provide a revised quotation based on actual numbers of passengers travelling on the given program. The group quote and rates will no longer apply.

III. TOUR ESCORT (LEADER) POLICY

As defined separately in our land-only quotations and our air-only quotations. Costs will either include or exclude FOC (free of charge) land and/or air arrangements for a bonafide tour escort. The Escort must travel with the group in both directions when air is quoted.  Any FOC air tickets are offered as per the airline’s tour conductor policy. All air taxes must be paid for the FOC Tour Escort Ticket and will be included on the final invoice. Mileage points cannot be accumulated on a FOC ticket.

IV. AMENDMENT FEES

Goway Travel reserves the right to charge an amendment fee of USD$50.00 per proposal, when in excess of 3 proposals, and where extensive amendments are required. Once the group has been booked and confirmed, supplier charges may also apply for any changes made.

V. FORCE MAJEURE :

We shall not be liable for any claims, losses, damages, costs, expenses, delays or loss of enjoyment, of any nature or kind whatsoever, resulting from events beyond our or a supplier’s reasonable control, including but not limited to acts of God, strikes, lockouts or other labour disputes or disruptions, wars, blockades, insurrections, riots, earthquakes, weather conditions, floods or acts or restraints imposed by government authorities

Important things to know before you visit dubai.

UAE laws and customs are very different to those in the UK. Before you visit it's important to familiarize yourself with what is and what's not appropriate, to avoid offending anyone or inadvertently breaking the law.

•  Passport. Should be valid for at least 6-months; no Visa required
• Check your prescriptions . There is a strict, zero-tolerance drug policy and this can extend to a number of prescription medicines. Be sure to check UAE's official website to see which medicines that are allowed.
• Avoid PDA . Public displays of affection, including holding hands and kissing, are considered offensive and could lead to arrest, so it's best to wait until you're back in your accommodation before snuggling up with your partner.
• Unmarried couples cohabiting is illegal in Dubai . And this applies to hotel rooms too, so please bear this in mind when deciding room arrangements. In reality, this is not strictly enforced and it's unlikely you'll be challenged on it. We recommend researching hotels that are known for being more accommodating to unmarried couples.
• Dress conservatively in public spaces . At the beaches and resorts it's fine to wear swimwear and shorts etc., however it's best to keep shoulders and knees covered when in public spaces.
• Avoid swearing in public . Swearing, arguments and fighting in public areas are all offences that could see you getting in trouble with the law.
• No being drunk in public spaces . It's illegal to drink in public or be tipsy in public, so if you've had a boozy evening enjoying the clubs and bars, once you're done be sure to take a taxi straight back to your hotel.
• Don't take photos of people without permission . As you're snapping away, be cautious of people in your frame. Taking pictures of people, especially women and children, without permission is illegal. Taking pictures of government and military buildings is also prohibited.
• Abide by the rules of Ramadan . During the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn to sunset. If you visit during this time, it's important to know that eating, drinking, and smoking is strictly forbidden during daylight hours. Dining in your hotel room or restaurants where there's designated areas screened off, is allowed.

Useful information for planning your vacation in Dubai

The official language of Dubai is Modern Standard Arabic, but in casual conversation, Emiratis speak a local dialect called Khaleeji (Gulf Arabic). However, most people living in Dubai are from other countries, so English is commonly spoken and most signs are written in both Arabic and English.

The currency of Dubai is the United Arab Emirates dirham (AED). ATMs are widespread and cash is the primary means of payment throughout the city, though credit cards are widely accepted everywhere except the souqs.

Tipping in Dubai is completely discretionary and down to personal preference. Only food and drinks outlets in hotels are legally allowed to add service charges to your total but they’re often not passed on to serving staff, so you may want to add an additional tip. Independent restaurants don’t typically add service charges, so leaving a 10% tip is appreciated.

In Dubai, you can unwind on sandy beaches, visit lavish shopping malls, peruse traditional bazaars, go on a desert adventure, and sample cuisines from across the globe. It’s also the kind of place where you can zip-line across the marina, visit coffee and pearl museums, and get a gold-leaf facial. In other words, Dubai is a city of excess.

Dubai has a variety of distinct districts, and you’ll find different experiences in each from the super-sized shopping malls in the heart of the city to the traditional architecture of Al Fahidi, and the waterparks of the Palm. Downtown Dubai is where you’ll find some of Dubai’s best shopping along with the aquarium, opera house, Museum of the Future, and the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building.

Jumeirah is one of the city’s most fashionable addresses and has an array of smart restaurants to choose from, nearby Dubai Marina is another good spot for dining and nightlife. For a more traditional take on the city, head to historical Al Fahidi to wander meandering lanes lined with artists’ workshops, traditional wind towers, cafes, galleries, and small gift shops, or hop across Dubai Creek to visit the gold souq. Beyond the city lies the Dubai Desert Conservation Reserve, a rippling blanket of dunes with a surprising array of wildlife.

It takes around 13 hours to fly to Dubai from the East Coast of the USA and around 16 from the West Coast. Flights from Hawaii to Dubai take upwards of 24 hours.

The time zone in Dubai is UTC+4 hours. The clocks don’t change during the year.

The best way of getting around Dubai is by public transport because it’s clean, efficient, and easy to use. You can take the metro or tram to most places of interest, and there’s also a monorail that will take you to Palm Jumeirah and the Atlantis hotel. The Dubai Ferry runs along the coast, and you’ll find taxis everywhere. They can be booked in advance or hailed on the street. Taxis with a pink roof are driven by women and take female passengers or families only.

US citizens will need to get a 30-day visa on arrival in Dubai. If you plan to stay longer, please contact the UAE embassy.

Your doctor can provide you with vaccine advice for Dubai, but you should also ensure you’re up to date with the recommended vaccinations for your home country. You can also check the suggested vaccinations on the C enters for Disease Control and Prevention website .

You’ll need to check that your passport is valid for six months from your date of arrival into Dubai. You will also need to have confirmed onward airline tickets to your next destination.

You can take medication into Dubai, but some medications require a permit. You should check with your doctor before you travel to see if your medication requires one. If it doesn’t, you’ll just need to carry your prescription with you. However, if your medication is on the controlled list, you’ll need to apply in advance for a permit to import medicines for personal use . Applications are normally processed within five working days.

In Dubai, you should wear long, loose clothing that covers your shoulders and knees in public areas including shopping malls. Cotton or linen clothing is most comfortable in hot weather, and everyone is expected to dress modestly regardless of gender because the United Arab Emirates is an Islamic country.

If you’re visiting a mosque or religious site, you should wear full-length sleeves and trousers or an ankle-length skirt. Women will also need to bring a scarf to cover their heads. It’s a good idea to carry an extra layer in case you need to cover up or just feel cold in the air-conditioned shopping malls.

On the beach and at hotels, you can wear regular swimwear including bikinis, but you should always cover up when leaving the beach.

You can travel to Dubai during Ramadan and shouldn’t encounter any significant changes to your experience. Non-Muslims are not required to fast and there are no specific restrictions for visitors during Ramadan. Most restaurants, including those in hotels, operate as normal during the day, but you may find there are different opening hours at some on-site dining options in hotels.

It’s strictly prohibited to take photographs of military or government buildings, ports, aircraft, or in the airport in Dubai. You must also ask for permission before taking a picture with anyone else in it and you should never take photos of women or families in public areas.

Dubai is part of an Islamic country, so the customs and traditions may be very different from your home country. For example, it’s illegal to drink alcohol or be drunk in a public place, though you can still drink alcohol in a licensed hotel, and its restaurants or dedicated lounges.

Out of respect you shouldn't use your right hand for opening doors, greeting people, or for eating. Excessive public displays of affection are prohibited, and swearing, fighting, or using rude gestures in public can land you in a lot of trouble. It’s also worth knowing that the weekend is Friday and Saturday.

Dubai: Want to visit some of Dubai’s famous outdoor attractions before they close for the summer? Eid Al Fitr is the ideal time to experience these must-see places before they take a break during the summer months, before they reopen around September or October.

1. global village - closes on april 28, 2024.

This month, one of the UAE’s most famous outdoor attractions, Global Village , will end its 28th season after opening its doors six months ago in October 2023.

Explore the country pavilions, street food, entertainment shows, restaurants, weekly fireworks, and the Global Village Carnaval, which boasts over 195 rides, games, and attractions.

You can buy the tickets at the location but if you buy them online through the Global Village website - www.globalvillage.ae, you will get a 10 per cent discount . - Any day tickets – Dh30 (Dh27 online) - Weekday tickets – Dh25 (Dh22.50 online)

Timings - from 4pm to 2am during the Eid Al Fitr holidays.

Location - The attraction is located on Mohamed Bin Zayed Road (E311) between the Arabian Ranches residential development and the IMG Worlds of Adventure theme park.

You can also reach Global Village by public transportation. Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) operates direct bus routes to the family destination. Here are all the bus routes on the dedicated Global Village service within Dubai:

1. Route 102 - From Al Rashidiya Bus Station Gate 5 in Rashidiya 2. Route 103 - From Union Square Bus Station in Deira 3. Route 104 - From Al Ghubaiba Bus Station in Al Fahidi 4. Route 106 - From the Mall of the Emirates Metro Station 5. Route 107 - From Al Nahda (behind Sahara Centre)

If you are planning to come from Ras Al Khaimah, there is another bus route operated by the Ras Al Khaimah Transport Authority (RAKTA), the details for which you can find here .

2. Dubai Miracle Garden - closes on June 2, 2024

In two months, Dubai Miracle Garden , the world’s largest natural flower garden, will end its 12th season.

The park boasts more than 150 million flowers and at least 120 varieties of plants, with the entire park spanning 72,000 square metres, filled with sculptures covered in flowers.

One of the most famous attractions at Dubai Miracle Garden is the Guinness World Record-breaking floral sculpture, which is in the shape of an Emirates Airbus A380. Another record-breaking attraction is the 18-metre sculpture of Mickey Mouse made with 100,000 plants and flowers.

- Dh95 for individuals above 12 years old. - Dh80 for children from three to 12 years old. - Free for children below three years old and People of Determination. There is also a 50 per cent discount on ticket fares for one adult accompanying the Person of Determination.

Timings - Monday to Friday from 9am to 9pm and 9am to 10pm on weekends.

Location - Dubai Miracle Garden is in Al Barsha South, Street 3 in Dubailand, at the cross-section of Sheikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road (E311) and Umm Suqeim Road (D63).

If you want to reach Dubai Miracle Garden by using public transport, you can first take the Metro to the Mall of Emirates (MOE) Metro Station and take the bus route 105 from MOE to Dubai Miracle Garden.

3. Dubai Safari Park - Closes on May 31, 2024

Dubai Safari Park, which is home to around 3,000 animals on a 119-hectare site will also end its 2023-2024 season soon, after opening in October 2023. According to the park's website, visitors can only book tickets till May 31, 2024.

The park is divided into different enclosures, representing wildlife from around the world. While you are there you can spot the African lion, Arabian Oryx, Sand Gazelle, cheetahs, hippos, giraffes, impalas, elephants, and zebras.

There are various packages offered by Dubai Safari Park, based on what the visitors would like to do. The normal individual tickets start from: - Dh50 for adults - Dh20 for children from the ages of three to 12 years old.

Timings - from 10am to 6pm  during the Eid Al Fitr holidays.

Location - The Dubai Safari Park is in the Al Warqa 4 district, off E44 (Ras Al Khor Road). If you want to take public transportation, you can take the bus route F10 from Rashidiya Bus Station.

Changes to reduce travel time on key Dubai Metro route come into effect today

Travellers on Dubai Metro's red line will no longer have to switch trains at Jebel Ali station from Monday.

The move by the city's Roads and Transport Authority has been introduced to reduce the amount of time passengers spend in transit.

A Y Junction format is being introduced, this means trains from the Ibn Battuta station in Jebel Ali will alternate between trips to UAE Exchange and the Expo 2020 stations.

"Passengers no longer need to interchange at Jebel Ali metro station. The commuters travelling from Ibn Battuta station to UAE Exchange can now benefit from a direct journey, while those heading to Gardens - EXPO 2020 can conveniently board a train directly to their destination," said Hassan Al Mutawa, the RTA's director of rail operation.

Starting April 15, 2024, RTA brings a service update to the Red Line for a seamless journey. A new direct line to UAE Exchange station offers convenient travel between Ibn Battuta and UAE Exchange stations without transfers at Jebel Ali. The move will greatly reduce crowds, as well as waiting times, he added.

A lower number of train kilometres, he said, would also help to reduce the amount of energy consumed.

"These enhancements represent a monumental leap for passengers using Dubai Metro Red Line, solidifying Dubai's status as a global leader in providing unparalleled public transportation services," said Mr Al Mutawa.

"We are confident that these improvements will not only meet but exceed the expectations of our esteemed commuters."

All aboard for changes

Work on the Dubai Metro Blue Line will also start later this year, the RTA said in February.

The Dh18 billion ($4.9 billion) project will feature 14 stations and add 30km to the Metro network, with more than half of it underground.

"This year will witness the start of implementation of the Dubai Metro Blue Line project," said Mattar Al Tayer, director general of the RTA, earlier this year.

“[It] serves vital areas whose population is expected to reach about one million, according to the Dubai Urban Plan 2040, and achieves connectivity and integration with the Red and Green Lines."

The Metro accounted for the largest proportion of users of mass transit, shared transport and taxis last year, at 37 per cent, said Mr Al Tayer.

The combined ridership of public transport and shared mobility, including Dubai Metro, tram, buses, marine transport and taxis reached about 702 million last year, up 13 per cent from 621.4 million in 2022, according to the RTA.

The average daily ridership of these modes of transport in 2023 was 1.92 million, compared to 1.7 million the previous year.

The Blue Line will connect five principal urban regions of Dubai once it is completed – Bur Dubai and Deira, Downtown and Business Bay, Dubai Silicon Oasis, Dubai Marina and JBR and Expo City Dubai.

The project is expected to be completed by 2029, to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the Dubai Metro.

When is Eid al-Fitr 2024 and how is it celebrated?

The three-day festival celebrates the completion of the fasting month of Ramadan by Muslims across the world.

As a new moon was not sighted on Monday evening after Maghrib prayers, Muslims in Saudi Arabia and neighbouring countries will fast one more day, completing 30 days of Ramadan. The first day of Eid will then be celebrated on Wednesday, April 10.

The first day of Eid al-Fitr is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon marking the start of the month of Shawwal, the 10th month of the Islamic (Hijri) calendar.

Lunar months last between 29 and 30 days so Muslims usually have to wait until the night before Eid to verify its date.

When the sighting has been verified, Eid is declared on television, radio stations and at mosques.

How do Muslims celebrate Eid?

Traditionally, Eid is celebrated for three days as an official holiday in Muslim-majority countries. However, the number of holiday days varies by country.

Muslims begin Eid day celebrations by partaking in a prayer service that takes place shortly after dawn, followed by a short sermon.

On their way to the prayer, which is traditionally held in an open area, Muslims recite takbeerat, praising God by saying “Allahu Akbar”, meaning “God is great”.

It is customary to eat something sweet before the prayer, such as date -filled biscuits known as maamoul in the Middle East. This particular festival is known as the “sweet” Eid – and the distribution of sweets is common across the Muslim world.

Muslims usually spend the day visiting relatives and neighbours and accepting sweets as they move around from house to house.

Each country has traditional desserts and sweets that are prepared before Eid or on the morning of the first day.

Children, dressed in new clothes, are offered gifts and money to celebrate the joyous occasion.

Girls and women in many countries decorate their hands with henna. The celebration for Eid begins the night before as women gather in neighbourhoods and large family gatherings for the application of henna.

In some countries, families visit graveyards to offer their respects to departed family members right after the morning prayers.

It is common for Muslim-majority countries to decorate their cities with lights and hold festivities to commemorate the end of the fasting month.

Eid amid the onslaught in Gaza

For some 2.3 million Palestinians in Gaza this Eid, this will be the first Muslim religious holiday after more than 33,000 people have been killed in Israeli attacks. With little food aid, and very limited water, Gaza’s Eid al-Fitr will be mired in destruction amid the continuing attacks.

What are common Eid greetings?

The most popular greeting is “Eid Mubarak” (Blessed Eid) or “Eid sa’id” (Happy Eid). Eid greetings also vary depending on the country and language.

U.S. issues travel warning for Israel with Iran attack believed to be imminent and fear Gaza war could spread

Tel Aviv  — Israel is bracing for a worst-case scenario that U.S. officials believe could materialize within just hours — the possibility of a direct attack on Israeli soil by Iran in retaliation for a strike almost two weeks ago that killed seven Iranian military officers. Iran has vowed to take revenge for Israel killing its commanders, who were hit by an April 1 strike on the Iranian embassy in Syria's capital.

Two U.S. officials told CBS News that a major Iranian attack against Israel was expected as soon as Friday, possibly to include more than 100 drones and dozens of missiles aimed at military targets inside the country. Sources have told CBS News the retaliation could include attacks carried out both by Iranian forces, and proxy groups around the region that it has been funneling additional arms to for weeks.  

The officials said it would be challenging for the Israelis to defend against an attack of that magnitude, and while they held out the possibility that the Iranians could opt for a smaller-scale attack to avoid a dramatic escalation, their retaliation was believed to be imminent. 

Asked Friday how imminent he believes an attack is, President Biden responded, "I don't want to get into secure information, but my expectation is sooner than later." The president urged Iran not to move forward, saying his message to Tehran was: "Don't."

Tehran has not indicated publicly how or when it will return fire, so it's unclear how far Iran's leaders will go. If they decide to carry out a direct attack on Israel, there's fear it could blow Israel's ongoing war against Iranian ally Hamas up into a much wider regional conflict.

With the Iranian retaliation expected at any time, the U.S. State Department on Thursday warned Americans in Israel not to travel outside major cities, which are better protected from incoming rocket fire by the country's Iron Dome missile defense system. The latest guidance noted that travel by U.S. government employees in Israel could be further restricted with little notice as things develop in the tinderbox region.

"Whoever harms us, we will harm them," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Thursday as he visited troops at an Israel Defense Forces airbase. "We are prepared … both defensively and offensively."

On Saturday, all U.S. embassies in the Middle East were put on high alert and required to hold emergency action committee meetings. Diplomats in Lebanon and Israel were specifically told not to travel to certain areas within those countries.

Sima Shine, a security expert and former official with Israel's national intelligence agency Mossad, told CBS News it was a dangerous moment for the region, and the "most worried" she has been. She said anxiety over an all-out war was likely just as high "on both sides, in Israel and in Iran."

If Iran does choose to strike Israel directly, it could involve a complex missile and drone attack similar to the one Iranian forces launched against a Saudi oil facility in 2019 .

"They will try to do it on the military or some military asset," Shine predicted. "But the question will be the damage. If there would be many injured people, killed or injured … I think it has the potential for a huge escalation."

Shine stressed, however, that she still believes neither side actually wants a regional conflict.

U.S. "really trying to avoid war"

The U.S. sent a senior general to Israel this week to coordinate with the close American ally on any response it might make to an Iranian attack. Speaking Friday on "CBS Mornings," America's top military officer said, "we're really trying to avoid war."

"This is part of the dialogue that I have with my counterparts within the region, to include the Israeli chief of defense, who I talked to yesterday," said Joint Chiefs chairman Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr., adding that the U.S. military was "doing things not only to prevent a war, but at the same time, one of my primary things is to make sure all the forces in the region are protected."

"My role, as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs, is to plan and prepare," Brown said. "That's one thing we do very well."

Brown's Israeli counterpart, Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, "completed a comprehensive situational assessment on the readiness of the IDF for all scenarios," Israel's military said Friday. 

"The IDF is very strongly prepared, both offensively and defensively, against any threat," Halevi was quoted as saying in the statement. "The IDF continues to monitor closely what is happening in Iran and different arenas, constantly preparing to deal with existing and potential threats in coordination with the United States Armed Forces." 

The IDF said the visiting U.S. general, Central Command chief Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, was taking part in the IDF's situational assessment.

The dilemma for Iran, said Israeli expert Shine, is to figure out how to deliver its promised response to Israel's attack in Syria, but in a way that does not lead to further escalation. Likewise, Shine said Israel could choose to show restraint when it responds to whatever Iran eventually does.

If either side gets the balance wrong, the consequences for the region, and even the world, could be dire.
