What Is The Titanic II? Billionaire Clive Palmer Revives Plan For Replica Ship

A mining billionaire and former member of the Australian parliament has again relaunched his plan to build a replica of the Titanic that is “far, far superior than the original” and will carry passengers around the world in "style and luxury."

The Titanic II replica ship imagined by billionaire Clive Palmer.

Clive Palmer, the world's 732nd-richest person as of Thursday, this week held a press conference in Sydney to say his dream of building a ship called the Titanic II is alive and well, and he plans to secure a shipyard and start building the vessel early next year.

Palmer, who has already started and stopped the Titanic II project twice before, said the plan is more real than ever before because "I've got more money now," the Guardian reported .

Plans for the ship from Palmer's company Blue Star Line would essentially recreate the exact ship that sank in 1912, including the famous grand staircase, a smoking room, theater, casino and dining rooms for passengers of various classes, including a third-class cafeteria that will serve stew and mash at long tables for those interested in the most authentic experience.

A comprehensive 3D rendering of the ship and its nine decks shows plans to build 835 cabins—383 for first class, 201 for second class and 251 third-class rooms—and the 2,345 passengers on board would be encouraged, but not required, to dress for the early 1900s.

The maiden voyage of the Titanic II, scheduled for June 2027, would retrace the steps of its predecessor and sail from Southampton, England to New York.

Ticket prices for a trip on the Titanic II have not been announced.

$500 million to $1 billion. That's how much Palmer expects it will cost to build the 56,000-ton Titanic II, according to the Guardian .

Crucial Quote

“So I could do the Titanic. I’m gonna do it,” Palmer reportedly said . “It’s a lot more fun to do the Titanic than it is to sit at home and count my money.”

Clive Palmer speaks at National Press Club on July 7, 2014 in Canberra, Australia.

Forbes Valuation

Palmer, 69, is worth an estimated $4.3 billion as of Thursday. He is the 13th- richest person in Australia . Palmer started Mineralogy, an Australian mining company, in 1984 and now has a portfolio that includes Waratah Coal and Queensland Nickel. Palmer owns iron ore tenements in Western Australia that are mined by Hong Kong-based Citic Ltd, and his fortune soared several years ago when a court dispute with Citic ended in Palmer's favor—resulting in a generous flow of royalties. Disputes between Mineralogy and Citic are ongoing . In addition to the mining business, Palmer is a real estate investor and politician. He was a member of the Australian parliament from 2013 to 2016 and has been a large donor to various national campaigns. He founded the United Australia Party , which was registered in 2018 and campaigned for bans on lockdowns and vaccine mandates amid the Covid pandemic. The party was deregistered in 2022.

Key Background

Palmer first announced plans for the Titanic II project in 2012 but it was called off in 2015 amid the dispute with Citic, which the Guardian said "starved" the project of the funding it needed. Three years later, Titanic II was relaunched but called off again, a move Palmer this week blamed on the pandemic and cruise industry shutdowns. This time around, the project has partners in ship design and marine engineering company Deltamarin, V.Ships Leisure and Tillberg Design, the company behind ocean liners Queen Elizabeth 2 and Queen Mary 2. Deltamarin is reviewing the plan for the project to ensure it complies with modern-day safety and construction regulations. The onboard experience will be authentic, Blue Star Line says , but modernizations behind the scenes will include upgrades to navigation technology and modern safety procedures. The ship will have a diesel engine but still feature four smoke stacks like the original, coal-powered Titanic.

While Blue Star Line hasn't provided specific route details Titanic II will undertake after its maiden voyage, the ship is physically smaller than the majority of today's trans-Atlantic cruisers but largely on par when it comes to capacity. Celebrity Cruises, for example, has more than a dozen ships that sail on ocean-crossing voyages that have capacities between 2,158 passengers and 3,400. The same is true of Carnival and Royal Caribbean cruise liners. Cunard, known for its trans-Atlantic crossings and operator of the Queen Mary 2, mostly sails ships with a capacity between 2,081 and 2,996. Plans call for the Titanic II to be 882 feet long and 105.6 feet wide. Today's largest cruise ship, the Icon of the Seas , is 1,197 feet long and 213 feet across, twice as wide as the Titanic II. The Queen Mary 2 is 1,132 feet long and 135 feet wide.

Return of a Legend

Titanic II has captured the world’s imagination since Clive Palmer announced that his shipping company, Blue Star Line, would recreate the famous ship in honour of the 100 year anniversary of the launch and untimely fate of The Titanic. While every bit as luxurious as her namesake, Titanic II will have every modern amenity along with 21st century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems.

The Titanic II project isn’t sunk yet, but can it float?

Australian billionaire Clive Palmer has revived his pet project, a working replica of the doomed cruise liner Titanic, after a favourable court ruling. But given the sketchy details around the project and Palmer’s history of over-reaching, should Titanic II be taken seriously?

titanic 2 cruise ship 2024

Back in 2015, it looked like one of the more eccentric ideas in the history of shipbuilding was going to sink without a trace. The Titanic II project, the brainchild of billionaire Australian businessman and politician Clive Palmer, was announced in 2012 and aimed to create an authentic replica of the original Titanic cruise liner, which sank after hitting an iceberg on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York in April 1912, with more than 1,500 passengers and crew losing their lives.

The cruise liner, which was due to make its first voyage in 2016, was planned as a detailed replica of the original vessel, with impeccably recreated interiors and hull form, albeit slightly larger than the original and incorporating modern safety technologies and standards, including more than enough lifeboats and rafts to evacuate all passengers and crew in case history should repeat itself.

While the media clamoured at the ambition of the idea and sceptical commentators wondered if it was anything more than a publicity stunt from a businessman with a history of ego-driven bad ideas , Palmer appeared confident that the vessel would be built. Blue Star Line – its name harking back to the White Star Line that built the original Titanic – was established to steward the A$700m project to completion, and reputable contractors such as Deltamarin and Lloyd’s Register Marine were brought on board to create and review designs for the ship. CSC Jinling shipyard in China was mooted as the site for the construction of the vessel.

“Millions have dreamt of sailing on her, seeing her in port and experiencing her unique majesty,” Palmer said in 2012. “ Titanic II will be the ship where those dreams come true.”

Three years later, the dream had soured.

Deadlines had already slipped to the extent that the 2016 launch date was already out of reach, but in 2015 a dispute over mining royalty payments between Palmer’s company Mineralogy and Chinese firm Citic reportedly drained the project of funds, putting it on indefinite hold.

The revived Titanic II project

In September 2018, Titanic II seemed to experience a miraculous revival. The Supreme Court of Western Australia ruled in 2017 that Citic was obliged to pay nearly $150m in unpaid royalties, which apparently left enough in the pot to bring Palmer’s passion project back to life.

In late 2018, Blue Star Line announced that Deltamarin had recommenced work on the project, and in December V.Ships Leisure was contracted to support the development of the build.

“We are looking forward to assisting Blue Star Line with our expertise in project support, new build supervision and ship management,’’ said V.Ships Leisure director Per Bjornsen. “This process showcases the full spectrum of ways in which ship management can add value from the very beginning in the management of a cruise vessel, long before the first steel is even cut.”

Palmer also made headlines last year when he announced that the European headquarters would be established in Paris rather than London due to concerns over Brexit, and that the European operation would be overseen by the somewhat worryingly named Clive Mensink.

Should Titanic II be taken seriously?

Even if Palmer’s Titanic II appears to have a tentative green light again, there’s little reason to believe that this project will ever see the light of day. Conflicting media reports over basic information such as whether or not construction on the ship has actually started, and where it will be built – some reports have said construction is already underway , while others have noted that the upcoming build is expected to take place in China , and still others have quoted Blue Star Line as saying the ship will likely be built in the Northern hemisphere .

Blue Star Line is doing little to provide clarity on key details, and appears to have deleted from its website many news releases quoted in media reports about the project. Even a widely-reported new launch date of 2022 was contradicted by the company, which confirmed to The Guardian in October that no dates had been announced, no construction had taken place and no shipbuilders had been contracted.

Beyond the lack of credible confirmation that the project is remotely ready to move forward, there are reasons to doubt that even a ship outfitted exactly as Palmer has described – from the recreated gymnasium to the ballrooms and Turkish baths – would actually find a market. No information on pricing is available, but Blue Star Line seems set on reviving period-specific details that are completely out-of-step with modern cruise expectations.

Air conditioning will apparently be added, but there will be no televisions or internet access, with the idea being that passengers who have no doubt spent thousands will be happier dressing up in period outfits, which will reportedly be provided in every room.

Second and third-class cabins circa 1912 will be incorporated, with narrow bunk beds and wash basins replacing the bathrooms and sea views that modern cruise customers expect, despite Palmer’s insistence is that third class is “where the fun will be”. Perhaps he imagines the cheerful working-class dancing scenes with Jack and Rose from the 1997 movie. By the by, Palmer has also said ‘Palmer Pictures’ is looking to outdo James Cameron’s classic with a Titanic movie of his own, a romance filmed onboard Titanic II .

The ultimate fate of the project remains to be seen. There are certainly viable ways of reviving the Titanic as a non-functional museum or centrepiece tourist attraction, as a theme park in China’s Sichuan province is attempting to do. But with Palmer’s history of over-reaching and the sketchy details of the build, it’s impossible to escape the conclusion that this is the vanity project of a billionaire Titanic obsessive looking to recreate a bygone relic of colonial elegance, without much thought put into whether the rest of the world is as interested as he is. Titanic II might not be sunk yet, but it would be a minor miracle if this project turns out to be seaworthy.

The World's Largest Cruise Ship Will Set Sail in Early 2024

Royal Caribbean International’s  Icon of the Seas is set to launch as the world’s largest cruise ship in early 2024, measuring 365 meters long and weighing approximately 250,800 tons — or five times the size of the Titanic . The mammoth vessel has completed construction in Finland and has entered open waters for sea trials, and it will continue to endure more rounds of testing prior to its official debut.

The gargantuan cruise can carry 7,600 passengers and 2,350 crew members, making the maximum capacity roughly 10,000 people. On board, the ship hosts the world’s largest waterpark at sea, with six record-breaking slides, seven pools and nine whirlpools. Additionally, there’s a performance venue called the AquaDome and a “chill island” pool deck, which features a swim-up bar.

The world’s largest cruise ship has been unveiled to a range of reactions, with many unsure what to make of the gigantic ship

Construction on Royal Caribbean International ’s Icon of the Seas cruise ship recently completed in Finland, with the vessel expected to make its first official voyage in January 2024.

According to Royal Caribbean, which describes the cruise ship as a “game changer” for vacations, the vessel will boast amenities such as seven pools, including the “largest pool at sea,” the “world’s largest waterpark at sea,” six waterslides and nine whirlpools.

In addition to its water-focused offerings, the ship promises more than 20 ways to dine, and more than 15 bars and “nightlife experiences,” including a karaoke bar, spread across its eight “neighbourhoods”. Icon of the Seas will also boast a rock climbing wall, Royal Caribbean’s first food hall, a beach-themed carousel, an arcade, and a mini-golf course.

Once it sets sail, the massive vessel, which is nearly 1,200 feet long, will be able to host up to 5,610 passengers and 2,350 crew members across its 19 floors.

On social media, the first photos and videos of the cruise ship, which is currently undergoing sea trials, have divided viewers, with many expressing horror over the “monstrosity”.

“As visions of hell go, that’s pretty much the most hellish,” one person tweeted in response to a photo of the new cruise ship, while another said: “I’m sorry but this is a nightmare.”

“The world’s largest monstrosity of a cruise ship, Icon of the Seas. 7,600 max capacity, 20 decks, five times larger than the Titanic. That does NOT look relaxing...at all,” someone else tweeted.

Others couldn’t believe that the photos of the cruise ship were real, with one person admitting that they thought the pictures were from a “Pixar movie”.

“For a second I was like ‘No, the Icon of the Seas is not real, it can’t hurt you’ because some wacky giant cruise ship seasteading scheme goes viral every 10 months. But I looked it up and it turns out they actually built this one,” another person tweeted.

Others expressed their fears for the ship’s fate in light of reports that orcas have begun attacking boats , with one person asking: “What [do] the orcas got to say about this?”

“Imagine the horror you’d feel standing on the deck, watching the army of orcas approach,” someone else wrote.

The cruise ship also prompted many to reference the sinking of the Titanic after the luxury steamship struck an iceberg.

“Netflix securing the rights to Titanic 2: Icon of the Seas,” one person tweeted, while another said: “I think I’ve seen this film before and Jack didn’t like the endinggggg.”

Despite the criticism of the new ship, it has already proven to be popular, with Royal Caribbean International reporting its “single largest booking day” in its 53-year history in October 2022, when reservations opened for the Icon of the Sea.

“There is an inherent hubristic element to continuing to build such monstrosities meant to sail the ocean. Anyway I wanna go on this,” one person tweeted.

Icon of the Seas: Inside the world's biggest cruise that's five times the size of the Titanic

The world’s biggest cruise ship, which is five times the size of the Titanic , is to take passengers into open waters in January 2024.

Royal Caribbean International’s mammoth 'Icon of the Seas' is 365 metres long (1,200 ft) and will weigh 250,800 tonnes. In comparison, the Titanic weighed 46,329 tonnes.

While the ship's length is longer than the Eiffel Tower is tall, it's the onboard extras that make this vessel truly huge.

A look inside the world's biggest cruise ship, The Icon of the Seas

When it sets sail in Caribbean waters next year, it will carry some 5,610 passengers and 2,350 crew.

It has 20 decks with eight "neighbourhoods" set up to house its huge passenger load.

The boat is also home to the world’s largest waterpark at sea - which is named Category 6.

It features six record-breaking water slides sitting on the open deck and over 40,000 gallons of water will be used to fill the huge pool.

With an ice rink, restaurants, bars and clubs, the ship has more leisure activities than most British towns.

For the more daring passengers, the ship has a "sky walk" where people will be harnessed and walk along a narrow platform with nothing but the deep water below.

Royal Caribbean International’s website says "when you least expect it, the floor beneath your feet could disappear, leaving you dangling high over the ocean".

Since the huge liner was announced there has been record breaking ticket sales, according to CNN.

The ship was built in Finland, and some 2,600 people have worked on Icon of the Seas each day.

For the sea trials, hundreds of specialists were on board to assess performance over four days.

Royal Caribbean says a second set of sea trials is scheduled for later in 2023.

The firm released a statement after the ship's first sea trials to say everything went to plan.

“During her first set of sea trials, Icon of the Seas traveled hundreds of miles, during which the main engines, hull, brake systems, steering, noise, and vibration levels were all tested,” the statement said.

“Everything was done on time as outlined in the schedule, despite her departure being delayed due to wind conditions.”

The cruise will take its passengers on a seven-night Caribbean holiday from Miami all year round.

  • Set To Sail In 2024, Titanic II Will Let You Have Your Own ‘Jack & Rose’ Moments

Even for the non-romantics, watching Jack die and the eminent ship sink in the movie ‘Titanic’ was something many of us couldn’t digest for a long long time. But, here’s something to cheer us up! It’s time to relive the memory of reel in real as an all-new ‘Titanic II’ cruise is going to be launched soon. And this time, even you can board it!

Going to be launched in 2022, the current project of Titanic II is under the renowned Australian businessman and politician Clive Palmer. While we just cannot wait for its release, it is stated by Palmer that the said ship will not only sail through the original path from Southampton to New York, but also let you travel around the globe. According to a recent update from the company, the voyage will set sail from Dubai to Southampton. Sounds enticing! Doesn’t it?

Of all the best safety precautions, the best one is that there’d be 2700 lifeboats along with 900 crew members on board. To avoid any mishap like its predecessor, Palmer’s company, the Blue Star Line is all set to ensure a smooth travel with installation of satellite controls, proper procedures for evacuation, and digital navigation.

While your dreams are all set to cruise, wait till you hear about the three class tickets for Titanic II! The first, second, and third class tickets along with their respective facilities exist in this ship too, to maintain the authenticity of the old one as shown in the movie and the interiors have been exclusively designed for just that!

However, there is another Titanic replica being made, which will be ready for the public by 2019 in China. This one is all set to give a tough competition to the one being made by Blue Star Line as it shall be launched sooner than we’d expect with an unbelievable resemblance! Called as the Romandisea Titanic, the Chinese version though will not be a moving one and will be tied to a berth in Qi river in South-west China.

Titanic II blueprints unveiled, but don't call it "unsinkable"

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Australian mining entrepreneur Clive Palmer on Tuesday unveiled blueprints for Titanic II, a modern replica of the doomed ocean liner, although he stopped short of calling the vessel unsinkable.

The ship will largely recreate the design and decor of the fabled original, with some modifications to keep it in line with current safety rules and shipbuilding practices, and the addition of some modern comforts such as air conditioning, Palmer said at a press conference in New York.

The three passenger classes, however, will be prevented from mingling, as in 1912, Palmer said.

"I'm not too superstitious," Palmer said when asked whether recreating a ship best known for sinking was tempting fate.

White Star Line, the operator of the original ship, had said the Titanic was designed to be unsinkable. Some 1,500 people died on Titanic's maiden voyage in 1912 from Southampton to New York after the ship collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic.

Palmer, who created the company Blue Star Line last year, declined to make a similar boast.

"Anything will sink if you put a hole in it," Palmer said. "I think it would be very cavalier to say it."

Unlike the original, Titanic II will have more than enough space in its lifeboats for every person on board and will have additional escape staircases. Markku Kanerva, sales director at Deltamarin, the Finnish company designing the ship, said it would be the "safest cruise ship in the world."

Palmer declined to answer questions about the project's cost. Although the Titanic was the world's largest ship in her time, she would be smaller than many of today's modern cruise ships.

"It's not about the money," Palmer said. "I've got enough money for it, I think that's all that matters."

Forbes estimated Palmer's net worth to be $795 million in 2012. He describes himself as a billionaire.

Titanic II will be built by Chinese state-owned CSC Jinling Shipyard, which is already building four ore carriers for Palmer's mining business, he said. The contract to build Titanic II has not yet been signed, Palmer said.

"Oh, probably next week, something like that," Palmer said, when asked when that would happen. "Most things I say I'll do I do."

He hoped construction would begin later this year, and that the maiden voyage, recreating the trans-Atlantic crossing of the original, would take place in 2016, he said.

"But if it takes longer, it takes longer," he said. "But we'll do it. We've got a big pile of money."

Jaime Katz, an analyst who tracks the cruise industry, said Titanic II may find it difficult to compete with established cruise lines, particularly the economies of scale of their larger fleets. She said the Titanic II could be marketed to wealthier passengers and could draw repeat business by varying its routes rather than focusing on trans-Atlantic crossings.

"People are going to be really cautious or superstitious regarding getting on a second version of the Titanic, or it could be a really compelling idea for history buffs who really want to live the story or the legend behind it," Katz said.

"There's an audience for all sorts of cruises," she said.

Titanic II will operate as a cruise ship, and passengers will find 1912-style clothing in their rooms should they wish to dress up and pretend they are living in an earlier era as they visit facsimiles of the original gilded first-class dining and smoking rooms, if they have the appropriate ticket.

Although the classes will be kept largely separate, Palmer said he was considering offering ticket packages that would allow passengers to experience all three classes during a typical six-day Atlantic crossing.

Prices for the tickets will be announced later.

Helen Benziger, a descendant of Titanic survivor Margaret Brown, better known as the Unsinkable Molly Brown, said at the press conference that the ship would be a chance to experience the sort of grace and civility she said was sometimes lacking in the modern world.

"I think it's a chance to go back in time," said Benziger, who has joined the project's advisory board.

Palmer said he plans to travel in third class on Titanic II's maiden voyage.

"I'll be looking forward to it as you bang the drum and play the fiddle, twirling around like Leonardo does," he said, meaning actor Leonardo DiCaprio, in one of the repeated references he made to the 1997 James Cameron film ‘Titanic.'

All tip and no iceberg? Clive Palmer refloats Titanic II plans 10 years after first announcement

Billionaire says ‘it’s a lot more fun to do the Titanic than it is to sit at home and count my money’

The billionaire mining magnate Clive Palmer has vowed to build a vessel “far, far superior than the original” as he unveiled designs for his Titanic II project – again.

Palmer hired a room at Sydney Opera House on Wednesday to let the world know his vision of building a to-scale replica of the doomed ocean liner would finally come to be.

Yet after distributing a press release to journalists in which he promised his company Blue Star Line would construct “the ship of love and the ultimate in style and luxury”, Palmer acknowledged he hadn’t yet secured a shipyard.

It was almost 10 years to the day since Palmer held a very similar press conference at London’s Ritz Hotel to “launch” his Titanic II dream.

A 3D rendering of Clive Palmer’s planned Titanic II

Asked by a reporter at that event if the project was a hoax or a publicity stunt, Palmer said that was “bullshit, really” and he had “enough money to build the Titanic 10 times over”.

Since then, Palmer has served a term as a federal MP, deregistered and then revived a political party and spent millions of dollars on various legal challenges , tourism ventures and expensive election campaigns .

Work on the Titanic II was suspended in 2015 after a payment dispute between one of Palmer’s companies and the Chinese company Citic starved it of funds. Palmer re-announced the project in 2018 with a proposed sail date of 2022.

On Wednesday, Palmer blamed the Covid pandemic for the delays. He said people should believe him this time because “I’ve got more money now”.

Palmer, who turns 70 later this month, stood in front of Sydney Harbour and suggested he could die having “done nothing”.

“So I could do the Titanic. I’m gonna do it,” he said. “It’s a lot more fun to do the Titanic than it is to sit at home and count my money.

“All you need to be happy, I’ve found in my life, is to have someone that loves you, somewhere to sleep at night and enough for a good meal.

“Beyond that, the rest is an illusion – it’s like playing golf.”

Palmer said he was confident he could secure a shipyard in time for construction on the vessel start early next year, with the ship’s maiden voyage from Southampton to New York – replicating the ill-fated 1912 voyage of the original – scheduled for June 2027.

He said tenders for construction would go out in June, with contracts signed by December. He estimated the 56,000-tonne ship would cost between $500m and $1bn.

after newsletter promotion

The Finnish-based ship design and marine engineering company Deltamarin was among the companies that supported the project, Palmer said.

While there was no real ship in sight – at least, not yet – journalists were shown a five-minute video of detailed 3D renders of what all nine decks of the Titanic II would look like.

Palmer said he was bringing in some of “the best designers in the world for cruise shipping”. The ship would have the same interiors and cabin layout as the original vessel, complete with a ballroom, swimming pool and Turkish baths.

Set to Johann Strauss’s The Blue Danube and featuring CGI animations of people dressed in period attire from the early 1900s, the video detailed the ship’s technical specifications, including a “Lifeboat Overview”.

The real RMS Titanic struck an iceberg partway through its maiden voyage across the Atlantic and sank on 15 April 1912, resulting in the deaths of an estimated 1,500 passengers and crew.

The story was mythologised with the release of James Cameron’s hit romantic film in 1997 starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as star-crossed lovers Jack and Rose.

Addressing journalists on Wednesday, Palmer said Jack and Rose’s love story was “one that touches the hearts of everybody”.

“The Titanic [II] we hope can act as a catalyst to reinvigorate some of those values that we’ve got, which will hopefully lead to peace.”

''Will Be Far Superior'': Australian Billionaire Unveils New Plans For 'Titanic II' To Sail In 2027

The cost of the ship is estimated to be around AUS $ 1 billion.

Clive Palmer, an Australian mining billionaire, has announced his plans to build a replica of the most famous cruise ship in history, the Titanic. According to a CNN report, Mr Palmer who first announced his plans in 2012 and again in 2018, resurrected his passion project to build a replica of the ship during an event at the Sydney Opera House on Wednesday.

Mr Palmer said his company Blue Star Line now intends to build the replica ship and set sail in June 2027. ''We are very pleased to announce that after unforeseen global delays, we have re-engaged with partners to bring the dream of Titanic ll to life. Let the journey begin,'' Mr Palmer said in a press release.

''The government lockdowns sent the cruise industry into a long-term shutdown, We are getting the best ship-builders, designers and engineers in the world back on deck to build Titanic II,'' he further said. The billionaire claimed that this ship would be ''far, far superior to the original''.

''It's a lot more fun to do the Titanic than it is to sit at home and count my money,'' Mr Palmer told local media. The mining mogul has a net worth of $4.2 billion.

Tenders are now being sought to build the ship, and Mr Palmer hopes to find a shipbuilder by the end of the year to enable work to begin in 2025. There will be room for 2,345 passengers on board with 835 cabins across nine decks. Almost half of the rooms will be reserved for first-class passengers.

The ship would have the same interiors and cabin layout as the original vessel, complete with a ballroom, swimming pool and Turkish baths.

''In 1912 the Titanic was the ship of dreams. For over a century Titanic's legend has been powered by mystery, intrigue and respect for all she stood for,'' Mr Palmer said. He estimated the 56,000-tonne ship would cost between $500m and $1 billion, as per a Guardian report.

''Titanic II is something that needed to be built. We all know how to make war. We get armies and we fund wars. People know about that. But it is a lot harder to make peace. To make peace you have got to stick with it every day. You progress inch by inch,'' he added.

The ship's maiden voyage is intended to trace the original route of the infamous 1912 voyage from Southampton to New York. It is scheduled for 2027.

Notably, The RMS Titanic, a British passenger liner, was one of the largest and most luxurious ocean liners ever built. The ship was on its maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City and had 2,240 passengers and crew on board. On April 15, 1912, the ship collided with a massive iceberg and sank in less than three hours. Over 1,500 people died in the maritime disaster, while only 705 individuals survived.

Australian billionaire clive palmer resurrects plans to build, set sail on titanic ii.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Australian mining magnate Clive Palmer has resurrected plans to build a replica of the ill-fated Titanic to sail around the world – an effort he’s promised before with nothing to show for it.

Palmer, 69, previously launched similar plans in 2012 and 2018 to build the Titanic II, a replica of the doomed ocean liner that sank in 1912 on her maiden voyage after striking an iceberg, killing more than 2,000 people on board.

The billionaire held a press conference Wednesday at the Sydney Opera House to announce his vision for completing the vessel, promising to construct “the ship of love and the ultimate in style and luxury,” the Guardian reported.

Palmer, who also served in the Australian parliament, said he hasn’t secured a shipyard.

“We are getting the best ship-builders, designers and engineers in the world back on deck to build Titanic ll,” Palmer said.

The ship will be constructed by Palmer’s company, Blue Star Line.

Once completed, the ship will follow the original journey of the first Titanic. It will depart from Southampton, England to New York and will also sail around the world, Palmer said.

Titanic II - a large ship with multiple chimneys - Welcome to the home of Titanic II.

The interior of the proposed vessel will comprise nine decks and feature 835 cabins, including 383 in first class, 201 in second class and 251 third-class rooms.

It will serve up to 2,435 passengers. It will also be fitted with an exact replica of The Bridge as it was on the original ship.

Aside from the onboard experience, the ship would feature upgrades to navigation technology and modern safety procedures.

Titanic II would be a replica of the doomed ocean liner that sank in 1912 on her maiden voyage after striking an iceberg, killing more than 2,000 people on board.

It will be powered by a diesel engine but will still feature four smoke stacks like the original, coal-powered Titanic.

“In 1912 the Titanic was the ship of dreams. For over a century Titanic’s legend has been powered by mystery, intrigue and respect for all she stood for,” said Palmer.

Work on the Titanic II stopped in 2015 due to payment disputes, The Guardian reported. In 2018, Palmer announced plans for the project with a sail date of 2022.

The bow of the Titanic is seen during a dive at the ship's resting place in July 1986.

On Wednesday, he blamed the COVID-19 pandemic and cruise industry shutdowns for delays.

“I’ve got more money now,” he said. “It’s a lot more fun to do the Titanic than it is to sit at home and count my money.”

A revived luxury cruise line wants you to spend more than 4 months at sea sailing to 27 countries for $84,000

  • Crystal says its around-the-world cruise in 2026 will sail to 72 ports in 27 countries.
  • Luxury travel company Abercrombie and Kent acquired Crystal in 2022 following the latter's tumultuous demise.
  • Crystal's first world cruise following its revival and rebrand departed in February.

Insider Today

Recently relaunched luxury cruise line Crystal wants to woo you back. How does a 135-day around-the-world sailing sound?

In 2026, Crystal says one of its two ships will sail from Los Angeles to Rome on a 4 ½ -month cruise. Along the way, travelers can expect to see 72 ports in 27 countries, from Australia's recognizable Sydney Opera House to Monaco's legendary Grand Prix.

On January 11, 2026, the cruise line says its Crystal Serenity will head west from California to Pacific Islands like Bora Bora.

titanic 2 cruise ship 2024

Then, it's off to New Zealand and Australia before hitting destinations like Hong Kong, Mumbai, and Bali, Indonesia.

Let’s not forget stops in Athens, Greece, and the Mediterranean before an exciting call in Monaco.

titanic 2 cruise ship 2024

From there, about 4 ½ months at sea later, the global journey would finally conclude in Rome on May 26, 2026.

Bookings for a double occupancy cabin will open on March 19 at $84,000 per person.

Throughout the journey, travelers will get to luxuriate in Crystal Serenity's venues, which include a piano bar and cognac and cigar club.

Active guests can spend their afternoons at the putting green or pickleball court.

Travelers seeking a relaxing vacation can instead head to the spa or sip on afternoon tea at the floor-to-ceiling window-lined lounge.

The only thing more dramatic than this global cruise? The journey Crystal took to get here.

titanic 2 cruise ship 2024

It wasn't always smooth sailing for the luxury cruise line. In early 2022, Crystal, then Crystal Cruises, made a big splash — and not the good kind.

At the time, the company — then owned by Genting Hong Kong — was facing bankruptcy, the sudden shutdown of its US operations, and the arrest of two of its cruise ships over millions of dollars in unpaid fuel bills.

A few months later, luxury travel group Abercrombie and Kent acquired the cruise line and its previously arrested ships.

Abercrombie and Kent, like the luxury travel company that organizes around-the-world trips via private jets .

Not the clothing store that smells like cologne (that's Abercombie and Fitch).

These days, Crystal and its ships look a bit different.

titanic 2 cruise ship 2024

Like your best friend post-breakup, Crystal has taken on a new identity: The company dropped "cruises" from its name and spent $150 million refreshing its two ships , the Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony. Both resumed service in 2023.

In February, the company’s first world cruise since its revival departed San Diego on a 125-night sailing.

titanic 2 cruise ship 2024

The Crystal Serenity is now traveling around the globe with almost 200 guests, a company spokesperson told Business Insider. (Baby steps: The ship has a guest capacity of 740, though the company points out that some segments of the around-the-world itinerary have actually been fully booked.)

However, the spokesperson said bookings for its 2025 around-the-world sailing are "even stronger, with a significant portion" of its 2024 world cruise guests having also booked the 2025 itinerary.

Crystal’s upcoming sailings currently start at five nights long.

titanic 2 cruise ship 2024

But like other premium operators, it looks like Crystal will continue leaning into its around-the-world itineraries , as signaled by its recently announced 2026 global sailing.
