Himachal Pradesh is a beautiful landlocked state in North India . With natural beauty spread all around, it is no less than a paradise on earth. I have been to many places in Himachal Pradesh but still can’t have enough of it.

The mountains, the rivers, the waterfalls, lush green meadows, snow-clad peaks, dense forests, religious sites, beautiful flora, and fauna, you name it and Himachal Pradesh has it.

Be it trekking in the cold desert mountain in Spiti Valley or backpacking in Parvati Valley , Himachal Pradesh attracts adventurers from all over India.

One of the most beautiful, family-friendly circuits in Himachal Pradesh is Dalhousie – Chamba – Khajjiar.

If snow-capped mountains and dense forests are your calling, don’t forget to check out my posts on Sikkim .

Dalhousie Khajjiar Chamba itineraery

So, I am going to present an ideal itinerary for Dalhousie including day trips to Chamba and Khajjiar. This circuit is lush green and breathtakingly beautiful.

So, it is very difficult to squeeze in all the places worth visiting in three days. But still, I have tried to cover the best places to visit in Dalhousie and its neighborhood here.

This is the best 3-day itinerary for Dalhousie.

DAY 1 – Arrive Dalhousie in the morning. Visit nearby places of interest in Dalhousie.

DAY 2 – Reserve whole day to visit Chamba

DAY3 – Go to Khajjiar via Kalatop wildlife sanctuary

But before we embark on this virtual trip, let’s answer some practical questions.

A Quick Outline

How to reach Dalhousie?

The nearest international airport to Dalhousie is Delhi. From Delhi, you can take a flight to Chandigarh and then proceed to Dalhousie on a cab.

Or you can reach Delhi and from there you can go on a Volvo bus, which runs daily. If you want to travel by train, you can go up to Pathankot, which is the nearest railway station and from there you can hire a cab.

Dalhousie is located 560 km away from Delhi. You can also book a taxi for a scenic road trip from Delhi to Dalhousie.

Where to stay in Dalhousie?

There is no dearth of hotels and resorts in Dalhousie. You can easily get one to fit your budget. Here are some recommedations:

Dalhousie Itinerary Day 1

My first strong recommendation, if you are traveling by road or train, travel overnight to reach Dalhousie early in the morning. This way you will get to utilize whole day for going around Dalhousie. I say so because Dalhousie is such a naturally beautiful and peaceful place that you need to be calm to enjoy the scenery and soak in the beauty and tranquility of the place. You can’t rush the things and still hope to enjoy.

Subhash Chowk

dalhousie tourism khajjiar

So, the day starts with you arriving in Dalhousie. After checking in to your hotel and freshening up, just get out of your hotel and head straight to Subhash Chowk.

It is more of a viewpoint, where you get a breathtaking view of the snow-clad mountains (if it has snowed), dense forests and lush green valley, all at one place. You can click as many selfies and pictures as you want.

The view is truly mesmerizing, and you won’t feel like leaving the place. Though it is called a chowk (crossing) it actually has five different roads originating from or crossing here. this place has been named after great freedom fighter Subhash Chandra Bose.

While at Subhash Chowk, go to iconic St. Francis Church , which is located right at Subhash Chowk. This church was built in the year 1894 in British architectural style. The interesting thing is that the army and civilians joined hands to build this church.

The inside of the church has glass and stonework. St. Francis Church has been maintained so well that nobody can say that this structure is more than 100 years old. It is surrounded by tall Deodar trees. And the ambiance of the church is so peaceful it will rejuvenate your soul.

From Subhash Chowk move to Panjpula. This picnic-cum-adventure spot is about 5km from Subhash Chowk. It is also the source of a stream that flows from the top and is said to supply water to the whole of Dalhousie.

Trek to the top to get a magnificent view. Walk alongside the stream and admire its flow. You can indulge in any of the adventure sports on offer here. Enjoy hot pakoras with steaming coffee.

Enjoy the density of the forest around the place. Buy some souvenirs. And above all, enjoy the snow if it is there (I was lucky that it had snowed only a couple of days earlier, so I could actually walk on the snow).

Gandhi Chowk

Once you are done, move over to Gandhi Chowk. It is the mall road and the main shopping center of Dalhousie. Though it is not a very big market you can see many eateries making local delicacies, which you can enjoy.

There are shops selling local handicrafts and souvenirs and other stuff. Spend some time here and do your shopping. There is a Tibetan market also at this place. Check out my Narkanda Diary also.

Talking of Gandhi Chowk, there are two ways of reaching here. First is, you can walk from Subhash Chowk via Garam Sadak. This is a walk of 1 km but a very enjoyable one. Garam Sadak is called so because it receives sunlight throughout the year and hence remains warm.

This road runs along a deep valley and while you walk the road, you can enjoy the stunning view of the valley as well as hills. From Gandhi Chowk, you can take a cab to go to Panjpula.

Or alternately, you can do it another way around. You can visit Panjpula first and then stop at Gandhi Chowk on your return journey.

Dalhousie Itinerary

Now, you must be tired, so you can go back to your hotel to end the day, and relax.

Dalhousie itinerary Day 2- Visit Chamba

Rock garden.

You can explore Chamba today. The first stop would be the Rock Garden. It is an amazing sight. This is a natural rock garden.

Rocks have themselves fallen after disintegrating from mountains and have formed an attractive pattern here. The place has been developed as a tourist spot and is ideal for taking selfies and clicking pictures.

Chamera lake

Chamera Lake - Itinerary for Dalhousie Khajjiar Chamba

Next, you reach Chamera dam and Chamera lake. Chamera dam has been built on the river Ravi, which flows through this place. The dam produces hydroelectricity. The lake has been built by the water collected around the dam.

It is a beautiful place. The lake is surrounded by lush green as well as snow-clad hills and is a very peaceful place. You can enjoy boating here in different types of boats and admire the beauty all around. Spend 2-3 hours at Chamera lake and visit the dam also.

When you drive further up, you start to move along the river Ravi, which is another thrilling site You can stop at a suitable spot for a little while. Enjoy the flow of the river. Spend time on the river bank and take pictures.

Exploring Chamba town

When you near Chamba town, you start to see small but lush green farms on the roadside. You can’t help but admire the scenery.

Moving into Chamba town, head straight to Laxminarayan temple in the center of the city, the oldest and the largest temple of Chamba. There are six beautiful idols of Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva.

The main idol of Lord Vishnu is made of marble and is a sight in itself. The most amazing thing about the temple is that it always remains pleasant inside irrespective of the weather outside.

Next, go to Himachal emporium in Raja Umed Singh’s Rang Mahal . Here you can buy local handicrafts like shawls and handkerchiefs. Its timings are from 10 am to 1 pm and then from 2 pm to 5 pm.

There are a couple of more beautiful temples around which you can visit if you have the time.

That will end day 2 and you can return to your hotel and relax.

In the Indian terrain, shoes can make or break your travel experiences. Read to know about the best travel shoes in India .

Dalhousie Itinerary Day 3 – explore Khajjiar

This could be the most interesting day of your trip. This could be the most hectic yet most enjoyable day of your trip. I was unfortunate to miss a few of these places as the road was closed due to snowfall during my visit.

Kalatop wildlife sanctuary

You start early and reach Kalatop wildlife sanctuary. Kalatop wildlife sanctuary has a variety of wildlife and verdant grasslands.

Surrounded by snow-covered peaks and tall trees along with pleasing streams, this place offers you the most enchanting experience. Just explore the sanctuary and click pictures. It is very rich in flora and fauna. You will find species like leopard, bear, deer, langur, jackal, barking goral and many beautiful birds.

Ganji Pahadi

From here, the next stop will be Ganji Pahadi. It is again a beautiful place. The name says it all. Ganji means bald and Pahadi means hill. This has been named so because of its landscape. Ganji Pahadi doesn’t have any flora on it.

But the brilliance of the place is in the colors it reflects. It offers a panoramic view from the top. During winters it is fully covered in snow making it an offbeat winter wonderland of India .

Khajjiar Meadows - Dalhousie Khajjiar Chamba itinerary

Now moving to last but definitely not the least part of the trip. From here you head to Khajjiar. It is rightly called the “Mini Switzerland of India”. This is one place you should not miss for your life.

Unbelievably beautiful landscape, the surroundings, and the whole atmosphere make it a paradise. Khajjiar is a saucer-shaped lush green meadow with a small lake at the center. It is the most picturesque place you could ever see.

It is a sight for eyes to behold. Just go there and throw yourself on the green grass under the blue sky and soak in the beauty and tranquility that is lying all around.

You can enjoy adventure sports also like zorbing and paragliding. There is a small ancient temple here called Khajji Nag temple. Go there and seek blessings. While returning, stop at Jai Jagdambe temple, which has an 84 feet high statue of Lord Shiva.

So, return to your hotel and take rest.

So, this is the best three-day itinerary for Dalhousie-Chamba-Khajjiar and I am sure you will be three most enjoyable days you would ever have. Pin the image below to save it for later.

What an incredibly detailed itinerary! This looks like an absolute beautiful place to explore. I normally go for city destinations, but this would be great for some relaxation. Thanks for sharing!

dalhousie tourism khajjiar

Sounds like a great itinerary, full of variety. I would love to check out Chamera Lake, although I might need to spend more than 2-3 hours there! It’s so beautiful. The Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary also sounds pretty cool to check out some of the local wildlife!

dalhousie tourism khajjiar

The itinerary sounds perfect for someone who does not know the area of India very well at all. When visiting Kalatop is it guaranteed that you can see leopards? This is something that I would love to experience. Chamera Lake and Dam looks such a peaceful area and very picturesque with the snowcapped mountains in the distance. Thanks for sharing this great itinerary.

Thanks Jane. I don’t think viewing leopards or tigers in India is guaranteed anywhere.Unlike lions which stay in barren lands, these delusive creatures love to stay in dense forests and are usually hidden from common sight.

dalhousie tourism khajjiar

This is a nice and varied itinerary about visiting this part of India. I’ve never been to the country, so enjoyed reading about Dalhousie and Chamba. The lake is so pretty, and I’d probably take a few hundred photos if I ever visit. I appreciate the accommodation options given too.

dalhousie tourism khajjiar

This is a lovey stretch too visit…

dalhousie tourism khajjiar

Chamera Lake is absolutely gorgeous! And I would love to visit the Kalatop wildlife sanctuary to see all the local wildlife. I can see why Khajjiar is called Mini Switzerland! So funny!

dalhousie tourism khajjiar

This is a beautiful itinerary of the most picturesque cities of HP. I have not been to any of these. I am planning for Spiti this summer, can these cities be included in Spiti itinerary? Would it be a good idea?

I think it would be a great idea!

dalhousie tourism khajjiar

I was born in India and did have the opportunity to visit Dalhousie when I was a child and this post brought back loads of memories I must say. I did not visit the other places but would love to go back there and discover Khajjar for sure for its natural beauty. I must admit I quite like the cuisine around this part of India and its rich and perfect suited for the cold weather. The wildlife safari looks good for the kids as well so will add that too. THANKS

dalhousie tourism khajjiar

Dalhousie looks amazing! I have never been to India but as I read more and more about it, I really want to go. I also love the photo from the lake, that looks like a lovely place to explore. I did not know that there is snow in India.

dalhousie tourism khajjiar

I have been to both Dalhousie and Khajjiar and loved the places. Though it is over-crowded during peak seasons. I prefer to stay in a secluded place, away from the crowd. This is a good itinerary for people who are planning to visit the places during summer vacation.

dalhousie tourism khajjiar

Thank you all for your nice comments. There are many more unexplored amazing places to see in India. Visit my website and get to know about these hidden gems of India.

dalhousie tourism khajjiar

I’m really curious about the adventure sports at Panjpula! I am down for just about any kind of adventure sport, so I feel like I’d want to spend more time there than at the markets/shopping areas. I just visited a hydroelectric waterfall in Peru and found it to be fascinating, so I’d love to visit the dam and learn more about how it generates hydroelectric energy!

Ah, it’s fascinating. I want to do that too.

dalhousie tourism khajjiar

I was really surprised that there was a Mini Switzerland in India. I didn’t imagine the landscape would look like that. Thanks for the very detailed itinerary. I am planning a trip to India in the next two years so this will be very helpful.

Glad to be of help!

dalhousie tourism khajjiar

I am not very familiar with India – but Himachal Pradesh sounds like a great place to visit. The town of Khajjiar is awesome – love that it is a mini-Switzerland of India! I would love to go there and just relax in the grass taking it all in!

Thank you. And thanks to the guest writer.

Unfortunately I don’t know a lot about India yet since I haven’t been able to visit, so I was happy that you described so well where in India this place is. I love the scenery and it looks like an awesome place to do some outdoors activities. It is interesting to see that they have those buildings reminding of Switzerland.

dalhousie tourism khajjiar

I love hill stations and therefore would love to visit Dalhousie, Khajjiar, and Chamba. But I was always confused about where to start and thanks to you for sharing a detailed itinerary as it is very helpful. Khajjiar really looks like Switzerland and really an amazing spot.

dalhousie tourism khajjiar

Dalhousie looks incredible. We were in Dharmshala last year and heard many wonderful things about it from other travellers too. Would love to include it on our next trip to India

dalhousie tourism khajjiar

I love the idea of driving from Delhi to Dalhousie so I could take in the beautiful scenery on the way. And then again on foot at Garam Sadak to walk the road along the valley for more mountain scenes. Chamera Lake looks absolutely picture perfect, too! You’ve offered some great suggestions that suit this “slow travel” gal. Thank you!

dalhousie tourism khajjiar

Thank you for the detailed blog, it really is very helpful. we are visiting with family and an infant during the last 3 days of the november month. we expect some snow or it is going to be dry and cold winter weather.

dalhousie tourism khajjiar

This post brought back one of my fondest childhood memories of taking a road trip with my parents and grandparents during the summer break to Dalhousie, Khajiiar, Chamba and then heading off to Dharamshala. We had stayed overnight in Dalhousie – can still recall that feeling of waking up to the scent of fresh pine and view of misty mountains beyond. Loved the surrounding views from the lush meadow in Khajiiar.

Thanks Aditi. I am yet to visit this beautiful place. Thanks to our guest author for the guide.

dalhousie tourism khajjiar

I would have loved the article if you should have also mentioned where I can have a relaxing stay in Dalhousie. Except for that, you have almost mentioned everything that a person requires before making their trip to Dalhousie, Khajjiar, & Chamba.

dalhousie tourism khajjiar

The mountain views look amazing! India’s mountain ranges look so breathtakingly green!

In Khajjiar we stayed in Hotel Mini Swiss. Equipped with all the modern amenities, Mini Swiss is a luxury hotel. It is just 10 minutes walking distance from the major attraction of Khajjiar.

Day 1: reach dalhousie.

  • Reach Dalhousie early in the morning by taking an overnight bus/train from Delhi.
  • Check-in at your hotel. We stayed at Grand View Hotel in Dalhousie. It was just a minute’s walk from where our bus dropped us in Dalhousie.
  • After getting freshen up, we walked up to Mall Road (also called Gandhi Chowk) from our hotel. It took us around 15-20 minutes. Always bustling with activity, Gandhi Chowk is the high street of the town with shopping places, eateries, restaurants, bookstores, bars, and hotels. There are many street food options here that one can enjoy.
  • Visit St. John’s Church which is on Mall Road itself. The architecture of the church is inspired by the Victorian era which adds an aesthetical charm to the place. Lunch at Kwality Restaurant on Mall Road.
  • Visit Panchpulla Waterfall. It is around 3 km from Mall Road of Dalhousie. We walked 3 km to reach Panchpulla which took us more than an hour to reach there. But we enjoyed the views and weather of Dalhousie while walking. It is a touristy location, so you will find it a bit crowded. More than the waterfall, we enjoyed our walk up there. There are several eating options and souvenir shops in the local market. We had already stuffed ourselves too much at the Mall road that we were full even after walking 3 km in the mountains. While on our way back, we hitchhiked to reach Mall Road.
  • We rented a bike from Motorbikevala at Subhash chowk to visit places around Dalhousie.
  • Enjoyed evening activities at Grand View Hotel and had an amazing buffet for Dinner.

We enjoyed the sun, views, and delicious crisp hot bread pakoras while sitting at one of the rooftop restaurants.

Day 3: Sunrise at Khajjiar Park

  • Located about 20 kilometers from Dalhousie, Khajjiar is the favorite of both honeymooners and adventurers. The park is always packed with tourists, so we visited it early morning around 7:00 AM and there was not even a single person in sight during that time. We had it all for ourselves and during this time the mist evaporates from the grass and it is an amazing time to visit this place.

Khajjiar, a little village near Dalhousie (20 km away), is frequently referred to as the “mini-Switzerland of India” and is a fantastic destination for a day trip or overnight stay. For its picture-perfect green meadows, Khajjiar is renowned. A tiny lake sits in the heart of the meadow, where you may relax by yourself or engage in adventurous activities like paragliding, zorbing, and horseback riding.

Khajjiar, which is situated at an elevation of 6,500 feet, is also well-known for its nine-hole golf course, which is surrounded by rich vegetation and a stunning scenery. However, due to excessive snowfall, the road to Khajjiar may occasionally be closed throughout the winter. On your trip from Dalhousie to Khajjiar, stop through the Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary.

Places to visit in Khajjiar

Khajjiar lake.

Khajjiar Lake is located in Himachal Pradesh’s Chamba district. It is positioned in a vast grassland terrain, 1,920 metres above sea level, between Dalhousie and Chamba Town, and is surrounded on all sides by evergreen cedar trees. The established god at the local temple, Khajji Nag, gives the lake its name. The lake has significantly diminished over time and is now in danger of going extinct.

Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary

Numerous species of plants and animals can be found in the Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary. Here, you might see a leopard, bear, deer, langur, jackal, Himalayan Black Marten, Barking Goral, or any number of stunning birds.

Khajji Nag Temple

You can find some snake idols here because it is a temple from the 12th century AD that is devoted to Naga, the lord of serpents. It is primarily made of wood, and pictures showing the Pandavas conquering the Kauravas in the famous Mahabharata war are hung from the circumambulatory path’s roof.

Lord Shiva Statue

It is one of Himachal Pradesh’s tallest statues of Lord Shiva, at a magnificent 85 feet tall. The figure, which is polished in bronze, is stunning to behold.

Tibetan Handicraft centre

It is a fantastic location to buy gifts and souvenirs for loved ones. There are some good traditional Tibetan goods available.

How to reach Khajjiar

The town of Khajjiar, which is a part of the Chamba district, is easily accessible by cab and has a good 24-kilometer connection to both Chamba and Dalhousie. You can take a taxi from Pathankot, which is 95 kilometres away, to Khajjiar. As an alternative, you can take a bus to Chamba or Dalhousie and then a cab from there. A round-trip taxi from Dalhousie would set you back between INR 1500 and 1700.

Best time to visit Khajjiar

The entire year can be spent at Khajjiar. The natural splendour of Khajjiar is comprised of wide expanses of dense forests and lush meadows, and the mild climate only enhances it. The nicest and busiest times of year are in the summer.

There may be snowfall on occasion, and the winters, especially January and February, can be rather chilly. During these two months, the road to Khajjiar could be a little unexpected, and a journey could be ruined by a lot of snowfall.

Perched atop a rocky ridge, with snow-clad Dhauladhar mountains and rolling emerald valleys adding to its natural beauty, Dalhousie, in Himachal Pradesh, is a quaint hill town perfect for a relaxing holiday. Lined with tall pine and deodar trees and dotted with pristine lakes and waterfalls, Dalhousie mesmerises you with its natural bounty. No wonder this secluded town was a favourite summer retreat of the British before Independence! The town preserves many remnants from its past and various quaint churches are a testimony to the colonial era. Dalhousie was named after the then governor general of British India, Lord Dalhousie, in 1854. Sprawling colonial-era buildings that are liberally scattered throughout the town, are a testament to Dalhousie's Victorian charm. Its beauty is further complemented by River Ravi flowing close by. This hill station also offers amazing views of the snow-capped Pir Panjal mountain range. Pines, oaks, rhododendrons and a number of other types of trees cover the mountain slopes. An ideal place to unwind, the hill station is a treasure of ancient temples, art, handicrafts and a rich cultural heritage that has been preserved since the 6th century. As you soak in the natural and architectural beauty, don't forget to sample the delicacies the town has to offer. From chha ghosht to patande, there's a lot on offer.

Gandhi Chowk Dalhousie

Updated on May 13th, 2023

It was in the 90s when I visited this hill station for the first time. We planned a brief trip for 2-3 days, and it was really wonderful trip. I along with my few lawyer friends, enjoyed it a lot. This tiny hill station in the Chamba district is a dream come true for any traveller who wants to rediscover what the words nature and peace mean. After so many visits in the past few years, I feel Dalhousie & Khajjiar is a land of pines and deodars and a lot of things are there that make it really a mystical land. In this write-up, I am blending all impressions that I got on different occasions about this place. The last visit to this place was a few months back. Here I am, sharing all my memories about this dreamland.

Built on and around five hills, Dalhousie is on the west of the  Dhauladhar range  of the Himalayas. Natural beauty is spread in every corner of this place. At the height of 6,500 feet above sea level, long trees of pines, deodars, oaks, and flowering rhododendron surround this beautiful hill station. Awe-inspiring snow-capped peaks filling an entire horizon can be seen any time whole the year. This place perfectly combines all-natural beauties. Lush green woods, warm sunshine and pleasant air, and beautiful landscapes all are here to make your trip really memorable. Dalhousie is a famous destination with a pleasant climate for most of the year, making it tourist-friendly. Summers are perfect for nature walks, whereas winters are too chilly. Snowfalls usually occur during winters. Nature-loving tourists visit this hill station every year, as the land is awesomely blessed with natural beauty.

St John Church Dalhosie

Dalhousie, back in British Period

Dalhousie is named after the British Governor-General of the 19th century, Lord Dalhousie. Initially, British people established this hill station in 1854 as a summer retreat for its troops and bureaucrats. This is the reason that there are lots of old building structures of that period. In colonial architecture, Dalhousie is also known for its old churches and other landmarks built in the British period. It preserves some beautiful churches. St. John church is the oldest one built-in 1863. Among the few other churches are St. Francis, St. Andrew, and St. Patrick.

Tourist Attractions in and around Dalhousie

It means five bridges. It is a beautiful spot covered in a green forest with water flowing under five small bridges, making it really amazing. People enjoy themselves there like a picnic spot. This place is so calm that you can really have a good time relaxing your mind and soul.

PanchPulla in Dalhousie

This place is at approx. 4 km from Dalhousie. It can be within walking distance for those who really enjoy waking in the green forest. I love waking, so I always prefer to go there walking. There is also a memorial of S Ajit Singh, uncle of Shaheed Bhagat Singh ( A great freedom fighter) , at this place.

It is a pleasant picnic spot, where you can spend some time with your family and friends and enjoy the loveliness of exotic waterfalls and refreshing streams. Some of these streams even contain medicinal properties that are helpful in healing skin diseases.

At the height of 2040 meters, it’s a place with Amazing greenery, pleasant climate, and natural scenic beauty. All these attractions make this place really worth spending time on.

Trekking from  Panchpula  to  DainKund  is very popular, and adventure lovers often love to explore unknown paths. The  Dainkund Peak  is the highest and a popular peak of Dalhousie, at an altitude of 2755 meters. The peak offers a splendid view of the valley that is a treat to watch. Everyone from adventure lovers to trekkers to photographers loves visiting this stunning destination, which is surrounded by beauty. The best time to visit this wonderful spot is in summer and monsoon, as the water gushes with full force during this season

Panchpulla in Dalhousie

The dense forest of Kalatop

One of the major tourist destinations of Dalhousie, the Kalatop Wildlife Sanctuary, is the gateway to Khajjiar’s beauty. Surrounded by a thick forest,  Kalatop  has situated 10 km from Dalhousie. It is the place near Dalhousie that has snow all year round. Long pines and deodar trees surround the entire way from Dalhousie. The name Kalatop means black cap in Hindi and refers to the thick, black forest cover on the hilltop in the sanctuary.

The other place touching Kalatop is  Lakkarmandi. Lying in the depth of River Ravi, the 30.69 km animal sanctuary comprises thick deodar forests, a plethora of wildlife species, snow-capped mountains, lush grasslands, and stunning water streams. It is not only a scenic and picnic spot for the tourists to enjoy but also a favourite trekking place for adventure lovers. People who are wild and adventurous, nerd for wildlife especially, this place is for them indeed.

Blissful solitude here makes this place an ideal choice for honeymooners. Couples can have a wonderful time without disturbance from anybody. Nature is offering all they need to be with each other. I remember my visit a few years back; this place was fully covered with snow. The road was completely covered with snow, and it was challenging to drive rather than perilous on snow-covered roads. It was a hard time, but today I still remember that we really enjoyed ourselves a lot. Tourists were playing with snowballs in less risky areas. We clicked many photographs there. I can’t forget those moments in my life ever.

Forest Rest House, Kalatop, Dalhousie

The wildlife sanctuary at Kalatop

The nearby wildlife sanctuary shelters a variety of wild animals. The sanctuary, spread over an area of 1962 hectares, lies in the path of the Ravi River and is surrounded by coniferous and oak forests. Jungle Safari highlights the sanctuary that almost every visitor opts for, along with families and children. The exotic wildlife sanctuary holds a great diversity of flora and fauna. Sanctuary houses wildlife like Bear, Himalayan Black Marten, Leopard, Deer, Barking Goral, Squirrel, Jackal, Langur, and many more.

You can go for tracking along the dense forest. You can walk here for hours, enjoying stretches of silence, sloping roads, and the singing of birds. While walking, you can have sips of hot tea, as there are many small tea stalls along the way. Forest has black bears, so it is better to take a guide along. The sanctuary lies in the path of the  Ravi River and is surrounded by  coniferous  and oak forests.

Hut House near Dalhousie

I still remember the soothing sounds of birds. The silence of this place, with the occasional humming of unknown birds, makes this place one of the most romantic places on the earth. It was really amazing jungle walk. This place can set deep impressions on anyone’s mind. I still feel long back memories like it is a thing of yesterday. Once you visit this place, it always keeps on calling you.

Khajjiar, mini Switzerland

Situated 13 km from Kalatop on the same road as Dalhousie, it has also known as Khajjiar as Mini Switzerland  and Gulmarg of Himachal . Khajjiar is full of natural landscapes, as it is at the base of the mountain range. You can see snow-capped mountains at the top of the lush green trees of pines and deodars. Here you can view panorama views of natural beauty. Khajjiar uniquely combines three environments-Lake, grassland, and forest, all in one place. Khajjiar and its nearby places are ideal for adventure sports like trekking, mountaineering, para-gliding, and ice skating.

The best way to enjoy Khajjiar is by doing nothing and just gazing at the idyllic pastoral scenery featuring a lake, pine and cedar forests and snowcapped mountains, grazing sheep & horses. Khajji Cottage , run by the Himachal Pradesh Tourism, is ideally located just opposite the main ground, where you can book your stay to watch this place at different times of the day. But we preferred a different hotel to stay in, which was in a more dense forest, as I always prefer a less crowded stay on such trips.

Natural Lake with small wooden Bridge

In the middle of the main ground, there is a natural lake with a small wooden bridge up to the centre of the lake. Tourists stand on this bridge and enjoy watching the landscape and also clicking their photographs. There is also a horse track on the circumference of the ground. You can hire horses for horse riding. We really enjoyed horse riding there.

There are different stalls selling eatables and other things. Kids can enjoy different games. Air balloons are a major attraction for kids and even grown-ups. You can also get your photograph clicked in traditional dress, and we can save those in unforgettable memories.

Khajjiar with a natural lake in the center

The Temple of ‘ Khajji Nag’  is the principal attraction to visit while you are in Khajjiar. This temple belongs to the 12th century AD and is dedicated to snake worship, and there are some snake idols inside.

dalhousie tourism khajjiar

We spent the entire day in beautiful surroundings on our trip to this place, enjoying all that nature has gifted to this wonderful land, and went back to our hotel, which we preferred near Dalhousie. It was a brief trip of two days, but we enjoyed it a lot. It has the potential for longer holidays if you really have more time to spare.

Zorbing in Khajjiar

An adventurous sport which is recently introduced in Khajjiar is Zorbing. It is like they pack you in a plastic ball, which rolls down in slopes. Initially started in Russia in the 1970s and later introduced as a regular sport in New Zealand in 1994 and is now used as a fun game in various places. I have seen Kids feel thrilled while enjoying it.

Other places in India where you may enjoy Zorbing at Pahalgam , Manali, Delhi and Lonawala, near Mumbai. Khajjiar, with its grassy slopes and meadows, is probably the best Zorbing destination. Rolling amidst snow-capped mountains and nature is utterly priceless and amazing.

dalhousie tourism khajjiar

From Khajjiar, you can further travel on the same route to reach the district headquarters in Chamba. Again, many options are there for tourists. I visited this place many times. I will surely suggest visiting the beautiful Dalhousie & Khajjiar.

Visit Chamba, a beautiful place

My recent trip across Chamba took me across various tourist attractions near Dalhousie, including Kalatop, Khajjiar, and Chamera Dam on the way back from Chamba to Banikhet. Chamba itself has a lot of beautiful things to experience in this town of Himachal.

Laxmi Narayan Mandir

Exploring temples and other things about history and spirituality is the best thing while you are in Chamba. The temples in Chamba are not only known for their religious significance but they also take you back in time with their awe-striking, ancient architecture. Laxmi Narayan Temple is a must-visit spot in Chamba.

Spend a few moments at Rang Mahal, Chamba

Rang Mahal, one of the most significant monuments, is in Chamba. You can see this building while you entering the town. It is a building designed with high fort-like walls and the architecture has an unparalleled combination of British and Mughal styles. As the legend goes, Kind Umed Singh made this palace, but later Raj Sri Singh- the king of the same dynasty, repaired the Rang Mahal. One state college partially uses the building of this Mahal. The other part is not well maintained. Government must take care of this historical monument so that we could save it for coming generations. The old palace currently also houses an emporium, which remains open from 10 am-1 pm and 2-5 pm on all days except Sundays. The emporium sells handmade shawls, kerchiefs, chappals, etc.

Rang Mahal Chamba

Enjoy a boat ride at Chamera Lake

A wonderful ride at Chamera Lake can certainly make your trip memorable. It is a thing that you must not miss at all in Chamba. At a distance of 25 km from Dalhousie, the exquisite Chamera Lake is actually a reservoir formed by the Chamera Dam, positioned at an altitude of 1700 meters. Built over the Ravi River, the Chamera is an artificial lake, surrounded by beautiful green trees and exquisite valleys. It gives way to various water sports activities, such as boat riding and fishing. We all had memorable moments spent there. The weather was really outstanding, making it more enjoyable.

Overall trip to Dalhousie, Khajjiar & finally Chamba can be full of fun for 3-4 days.

The bowl-shaped, pine-ringed meadow at Khajjiar is a major tourist draw, 22km down the Chamba road from Dalhousie. It's touted as a 'mini-Switzerland' and would be attractive if it weren't constantly thronged by holidaymakers and horse-ride hawkers.

The ugly cluster of restaurants at its north end doesn't help either, though hidden among it you could seek out Khajjinag Temple .

Dalhousie Travel Guide

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose was won over by the beauty of Dalhousie, a famous tourist destination in Himachal Pradesh, so much so, that he stayed here for many months in 1937. Today, he has two places named after him - Subhash Baoli and Subhash Chowk. The hill station has the same effect on tourists today, with its waterfalls, rivers making their way through mountains, dense forest trails that run parallel to enormous cliffs with grand views of Dauladhar range in the distance and a couple of churches that were built during the British Raj. Cafes, markest, Mall Road, those are equally convincing reasons to plan a trip to Dalhousie.

An Insight into Dalhousie Tourism

Dalhousie is one of the most famous hill stations of Himachal Pradesh. It stretches itself leisurely through the five mountains, Kathlog, Potreyn, Terah, Bakrota and Bhangora. It was established by Lord Dalhousie in 1850, and there are many things that remind you of its colonial past. Sightseeing though, is one of the many ways of keeping yourself busy here.

Those visiting Dalhousie do so to be in the company of nature, and it keeps them company always. It doesn’t matter which part of the town you may be in, the sight of snowcapped peaks of Dhauladhar Range greet you constantly. The clouds embrace the mountains in the distance, while the greenery of the landscape is brought out by the sun’s rays in another. This contrast lightens the mood and cheers you up. A trip to Dalhousie is largely about sightseeing, because the landscape lends itself perfectly to this activity.

An example of this sightseeing are the two waterfalls, Panjpula and Satdhara. Panjula Waterfall is formed by the coming together of various mountain streams whose waters are believed to contain medicinal properties. It is named after the five bridges that are built over the streams. Families often visit it to enjoy a picnic or just to revel in the surroundings. There is a memorial of Sardar Ajit Singh, a revolutionary freedom fighter who lived here for a while. Satdhara Waterfall is formed when seven water springs come together. Their waters are believed to contain therapeutic properties. The real beauty of this waterfall is brought out by the arrival of monsoon.

One of the ways the British left their imprints on Dalhousie was the establishment of churches. St. Patrick's Church is one of them. Built in 1909, it is the largest church in the town. Despite being built such a long time back, it stands in an impressive condition today. The interiors play as much an important role as the exteriors in lending it an elegant appearance. The low lying chandeliers in the inside and the latticed windows on the outside, both attract the attention of the onlooker to the same degree.

St. Francis Church, which was built in 1894 and stands out for its Belgium glass facade and brilliant stonework, is another top tourist attraction in Dalhousie. It's interesting to know that the church was built with public contributions from army and civil officers. Finally, you have the St. John's Church, which impresses you with its large collections of books about Dalhousie. The protestant church, built in 1863, is home to marvellous paintings of St. Peter and St. John. It is an important part of the town’s colonial heritage.

Just like most of the other famous hill stations in India, Dalhousie also boasts its own Mall Road. It is where most of the city’s socializing happens, and on any day, you can watch people taking a leisurely stroll or simply enjoying themselves by doing nothing. It’s a great place to interact with the locals, as well as lay your hands on Tibetan handicrafts, craftwork and woollen shawls.

Those that just cannot do without their fair share of adventure should take a 5 km trek to Bakrota Hills. A walk through the dense forests of the hills, dominated by deodar, pine and oak trees, rejuvenates both your mind and body. Go in the morning, and it bears that quiet relaxed look, with the mist embracing the forest. Throughout the course of the walk, you are treated to views of the town spread out below. During the winters, when the leaves, branches, slopes and nearly everything else is covered in snow, their beauty appears in a different light.

Dalhousie is also home to two temples, Bhulwani Mata and Bhalei Mata. Bhulwani Mata Temple is famous for a fair that is held every July. Bhalei Mata Temple also holds a historic significance, as it was built in the 16th century by Raja Pratap Singh Varman.

For most travellers, the prospect of going to Russia itself appears to be alarming yet given us a chance to reveal to you that Russia is a standout amongst the most intriguing and exquisite spots you will have ever gone to. Russia is on the double amazing and confounding. Winston Churchill’s abundantly cited line that the world’s biggest country spoke to “a question wrapped in a riddle inside a mystery” is as evident today as it was in those days.
