Such fuel efficiency attained while driving in special conditions makes it unlikely to get it in real-world conditions

Cars come with different drivetrain configurations depending on the segment.

Front-wheel drive (FWD) is most common in mainstream cars while expensive cars or SUVs come with rear-wheel drive (RWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD).

The Tata Safari has received a minor update to its features list resulting in a price hike of Rs 7,000-12,000 for the mid- and top-spec variants. This follows the recent launch of the Tata Safari Gold edition , which brought with it more equipment and some styling tweaks. The addition of features can also be considered timely, as the Safari's new arch-rival, the Mahindra XUV700, will see a full price reveal soon.

• Mid- and high-spec Safari prices up by Rs 7,000-Rs 12,000

Updated Tata Safari prices

Prices for the XT and XT+ variants have increased by Rs 7,000, while the higher XZ, XZA, XZ+ and XZA+ have seen a mark-up of Rs 12,000. As such, the standard Safari is now priced at Rs 14.99 lakh-Rs 22.14 lakh, with the Gold edition coming in at Rs 21.90 lakh-Rs 23.18 lakh (all-prices, ex-showroom, Delhi).

Updated Tata Safari: what’s new?

Tata Motors has begun offering the air purifier from the mid-spec XT trim onwards. Meanwhile, the wireless charger and wireless Apple and Android connectivity have been added to the XZ, XZA and higher variants. Other than this, there aren’t any more feature revisions.  

For reference, the Safari XT still gets an automatic AC, LED DRLs, auto headlamps and wipers, power foldable wing mirrors, keyless entry and start, 18-inch alloys, tyre pressure monitor, connected car tech, rear camera and cruise control. Those who want a panoramic sunroof can opt for the XT+ or XTA+.

The XZ and XZA boast of xenon projector headlamps, leatherette seat upholstery, terrain response modes, 8.8-inch touchscreen, JBL audio system, 7.0-inch part-digital instrument cluster, hill decent control, powered driver seat and auto dimming rear view mirror. The panoramic sunroof equipped XZ+ and XZA+ variants additionally offer a choice between 6- and 7-seat layouts.  

The Safari Gold edition gets a slew of gold-coloured accents inside and out, in addition to exclusive features like diamond-quilted genuine leather seats and seat ventilation for the first- and second-row occupants. Moreover, kit, like an air purifier, wireless charger, and wireless connectivity for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which also debuted on the Safari range with the Gold edition, have now found its way to the standard variants.

Updated Tata Safari: no mechanical changes

The recent round of updates is limited to the equipment list, and there are no changes under the hood. As such, the Safari continues to be powered by a 170hp, 350Nm, 2.0-litre diesel engine. A 6-speed manual or a 6-speed auto gearbox help put down the power through the front wheels.

Updated Tata Safari: rivals in India

The Safari takes on the Hyundai Alcazar and MG Hector Plus , and soon enough, it’ll also have to contend with the Mahindra XUV700's  7-seat variant.

(* = must-haves. According to me, these features are important for either SUV. There might be more but these were the ones I listed in my mental checklist back in March-April)

At the time of my purchase, the XUV700 AX5 diesel MT 7-seater was priced at 17.84 lakhs, while the Safari XT 7-seater was priced at 18.08 lakhs (XT+ with just the pano sunroof extra was at 18.88 lakhs).

In the end, it's purely a heart vs head decision. The Safari XT appeals more to the practical-minded of us, while the XUV700 AX5 is more for those who are pulled by the strings of their hearts (glaring missing features notwithstanding).

Hope this helps any/all buyers cross-shopping between these two particular variants of both models.

Tata Safari XT and XZ variants get more features

Alongside the launch of the Tata Safari Gold, Tata Motors has also added more features to the mid and top-spec variants of the Tata Safari. The mid-tier Safari XT and XTA now come with a built-in air purifier while the top Safari XZ and XZA variants further add wireless charging and wireless Android Auto and Apple Carplay connectivity.

Tata Safari features, safety

Aside from the visible visual enhancements, the Tata Safari Gold is the best-equipped version of this SUV offering all the above features as well as leather upholstery, ventilated front seats and optional second-row seat ventilation. Features already available on the Tata Safri include the iRA suite of connected-car tech , mood lighting, TPMS and an electronic parking brake with an auto-hold function. Carried over from the Harrier are the large panoramic sunroof, the 8.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system w, 9-speaker JBL audio, 7-inch semi-digital instrument cluster, auto headlamps and wipers, climate control, six-way powered driver's seats, tilt and telescopic steering, cruise control and a reverse parking camera.

Safety features include 6 airbags, the new added rear disc brakes, auto-dimming IRVMS, TPMS, ISOFIX child seat mounts, corner function foglamps, hill-hold, hill-descent control, corner-function fog lamps and a rear-view camera.

Tata Safari engine, gearbox, price

The same 2.0-litre FCA-sourced Multijet diesel engine from the Tata Harrier , which Tata calls Kryotec, is fitted to the Safari with 172PS and 350Nm. The engine is mated to a 6-speed manual and a six-speed automatic gearbox . Also, the traction-based drive and off-road modes that the Harrier first introduced to the Indian market have been carried over here too. Prices for the Tata Safari start from Rs 14.99 lakh for the base XE version.
