Review: Allagash River Trip Belgian-Styled Session Ale

allagash river trip review

Let’s give it a try.

Poured aggressively into a glass, this bright, slightly hazy, lemony-yellow colored beer presents a 1.5-inch head that is slow to dissipate. The beer’s carbonation can be seen in the steady stream of bubbles that continuously rise to the surface of the glass. On the nose, we first get notes of the Belgian-style yeast coupled with coriander and a touch of grapefruit. On the palate, the carbonation is not as strong as the bubbles suggest. Instead, the flavor of coriander leaps to the front, followed by yeasty notes, and a nice long, hoppy, dry finish of grapefruit pith. I didn’t really pick up melon or stone fruit notes (as the label suggests), but I did enjoy it.

River Trip is ideally suited to the summer months: the carbonation, citrus notes, crisp character, dry finish, and low alcohol will make it a winner in hot weather. It should be noted that River Trip does not really drink like a session beer, or at least not like a bad session beer: There is no sense that it is a watered-down version of a fuller bodied beer. It has character and flavor that sets it apart from many other session offerings. Also, the fact that it is sold in cans makes it easier to take on summer trips — might we suggest a trip on the river?

canoe Allagash Wilderness Waterway Maine

  • BEST AMERICAN ADVENTURES

Explore Maine's Wilderness by Canoe

The Allagash Wilderness Waterway offers over 90 miles of lakes, ponds, and broad river winding through scenic forests.

Maine’s North Woods are so far removed from the rest of the bustling Northeast, they’ve changed little since the 19th century. That’s why canoeing the Allagash River, a state-protected wilderness waterway, is a little like time travel. Over 92 river miles (148 kilometers), canoeists notice few signs of civilization, save for a few dusty bridges, a historic lumber camp, and the occasional distant rumble of a logging truck.

Though paddlers frequent the river between May and October, spring is arguably the best time to go: the crowds are few and the spring meltwater makes a longer trip possible. Enlist the help of Allagash Canoe Trips, a guide service established in 1953 and run by three consecutive generations of Cochranes. The consummate trip will take at least nine days, following the narrow, trout-packed Allagash Stream; serene, motorless Allagash Lake; and finally the storied river itself. Along the way, canoeists run Class I and II rapids, see a 45-foot (14-meter) cascading waterfall, and hike up nearby mountains to spot views of Mount Katahdin. But it’s arguably the moments when you’re least busy—gliding silently through the glassy water, observing a moose or an eagle standing sentinel over a nest—that you fall into a peaceful trance impossible anywhere else but this still-wild land.

Need to Know: Allagash Canoe Trips , a guide service, runs small, private trips. A nine-day, 100-mile (161-kilometer) trip along the Allagash Stream, Allagash Lake, and Allagash River costs about $1,225.

Canoe the Wild Allagash Trips

The Allagash Wilderness Waterway is Maine’s best known canoe trip and has attracted paddler’s for more than a century. Henry David Thoreau ventured into this region more than 150 years ago by traveling into the Allagash via the Mud Pond Carry from the West Penobscot watershed. The legendary Allagash is Maine’s only designated Wild and Scenic River.

Canoe the Wild Allagash Highlight Video, Summer 2020

Allagash canoe trips are popular with families, scouts, teens, summer camps, as well as adult and youth groups. With its easy flowing river sections and its moderate whitewater on Chase Stream Rapids, the Allagash is well suited for ages 12 and up. It is one of the few eastern rivers that can be paddled for a week or longer without coming into contact with modern civilization.

If you’re hoping to encounter wildlife, the Allagash is where you want to be. It has consistently been our best Maine canoe trip for spotting wildlife, including moose and eagles. With numerous put in and take out locations, outings can be planned from four to ten days.

At its headwaters are numerous lakes including Chamberlain, Allagash, Eagle, and Churchill. The northern section taking you from Chase Stream Rapids to Allagash Village, involves mostly river travel; you’ll be  paddling Umsuskis and Long Lakes, Round Pond, and portaging around 40′ Allagash Falls.

The region is rich in logging history, and there are numerous artifacts that can be explored from days gone by.  You’ll have a chance to visit the remains of Lombard stream haulers, a tramway from Eagle to Chamberlain Lake, and two locomotives on the shores of Eagle Lake.

A Guided Allagash Canoe Trip Provides

A safe and enjoyable time, guides take care of all the logistics including, trip planning, itinerary, transportation into the North Maine Woods to our launch location, equipment & canoes, meals and covering significant day use and camping fees at North Maine Woods points of entry. Campsites located on the river’s edge are rustic with picnic tables, fire pit and a well maintained outhouse. We camp in tents and cooking is done over an open fire.

Choose 5, 6, 7, or 8 days: Our 8-day trip takes in the entire traditional Allagash canoe route (93 miles) involves paddling the 3 large headwater lakes of Chamberlain, Eagle and Churchill ending in Allagash Village. Our 7-day trip (82 miles) begins on Indian Steam the south end of Eagle Lake ending in Allagash Village. Our 5 & 6 day trips (45 & 62 miles) skips the larger headwater lakes of Chamberlain and Eagle Lake launching at Churchill dam ending at Michaud Farms or Allagash village. Our 5 & 6 day trips include spending the first night on Churchill Lake allowing plenty of time to brush up on basic paddling skills in preparation for lively Chase Stream Rips the next morning. We’ll paddle Umsaskis & Long Lakes, meandering river sections, Round Pond, Musquacook Deadwater and portage around scenic 40’ Allagash Falls. Our takeout time on the last day is noontime with arrival back to your vehicles by early afternoon. Note in the event of low water or consecutive wind days that cause an extended delay, trips that were planned for Allagash Village may opt to take out at Michaud Farms.

It’s not a marathon: Except for the 1 st and last days, average distance and time on the water is 10 miles and 6-7 hours with breaks and lunch. Our itinerary is planned to arrive in camp by the middle of the afternoon allowing for time to set up camp and enjoy some down time. During this time, you may want to swim, fish, help with camp chores, learn a new camping skill, head off with your camera in search of wildlife and explore. Exceptions to this schedule may include being delayed due to wind so it’s best not to plan a schedule that doesn’t allow for a wind delay.

Best times to paddle the Allagash: Mid-May through mid-September. While fishing is at its best in the spring when the water is cold, the height of bug season tends to be the last few days of May thought the 3 rd week of June. The most popular times to paddle the Allagash are July and August with warm days and less bugs. Early fall is an excellent time with fewer people, no bugs, and the beginning of fall colors.

Allagash River Trip

A remarkable pale ale, River Trip’s new look is inspired by the beauty seen while floating down the Allagash Wilderness Waterway in a canoe.

Picture this: a serene, winding river on a sunny day. Miles of pristine forest surrounding you on all sides. The birds are chirping in the distance and all your worries slip away with the gentle rushing of the cool water. This paradise is what inspired Allagash’s River Trip.

Since its debut in 2018, River Trip has become a beloved companion to backwoods, backyards and balconies alike. In 2019, VinePair named River Trip its #1 beer of the year and it was the only beer included on Gear Patrol’s list of top 100 best products of the year . And now, after several years of being enjoyed while rafting through rapids and relaxing in inflatable pools, River Trip is sporting a refreshed look.

allagash river trip review

The beer’s new duds, which rolled out in the spring of this year, keep the same calming color scheme, but now also display images of the beer’s inspiration story: a picturesque canoe trip down the Allagash Wilderness Waterway. The Allagash Wilderness Waterway in Northern Maine is one of America’s preeminent canoe trips and was established by the Maine Legislature in 1966 to preserve, protect and enhance the wilderness found in this unique area. It’s a magnificent 92-mile-long ribbon of lakes, ponds, rivers and streams winding through the heart of northern Maine’s vast commercial forests.

“All of our beer is influenced by the fruit, grain and bounty of Maine. And we think that a perfect representation of that wild, rustic, Maine-specific beauty is the Allagash Wilderness Waterway itself.” – Brett Willis, Senior Communications Specialist for Allagash

“For years, we’ve donated to the Allagash Wilderness Waterway foundation,” says Brett Willis of Allagash. “Many of our employees love going to the waterway to explore, so we have a personal connection there.” In fact, Allagash Brewery is even named after the waterway. Founder Rob Tod thought the name and region captured the same spirit of Maine that he wanted his beer to represent. As the years have passed, Allagash’s connection to the waterway has grown. They’ve taken employee trips to the region and are constantly using more Maine-grown grain. Willis says, “All of our beer is influenced by the fruit, grain and bounty of Maine. And we think that a perfect representation of that wild, rustic, Maine-specific beauty is the Allagash Wilderness Waterway itself.”

The tranquil, blue scene of “the Allagash” (as locals call it), draws you in and is just as refreshing as the beer itself.

Also updated on River Trip’s packaging is a change in the beer’s style description, from a Belgianstyle sessionable ale to a pale ale. Removing the word Belgian from the packaging simplifies the style and gives River Trip a chance to speak to consumers with a style that’s more relatable. “We feel like [pale ale] is a really accurate description for the beer and it’s gonna allow more people to discover it,” says Allagash Marketing Director, Jeff Pillet-Shore. “It’s just a more familiar style; [it] doesn’t change the beer one bit.” Although the name and packaging have been updated, the recipe remains the same – a refreshing 4.8% pale ale with coriander that’s dry hopped for notes of citrus and melon.

Planning Your First Allagash River Canoe Trip: A Beginner’s Guide

Allagash River Canoe Trips

For many avid canoeists, the Allagash River Canoe Trip is on their bucket list, and for good reason. Protected by the citizens of Maine through a referendum in 1966, the mandate was to preserve its “forever wild” state. It truly is some of the wildest areas left in the east.

In this article, we’ll help you plan your first Allagash River Canoe Trip by giving you an overview of what you can expect on the river and the best months to schedule your trip with a clothing and equipment checklist.

Best Times to Canoe the Allagash River - Guide

What to Expect on the Allagash River

If you have moderate canoeing and camping experience, the Allagash River presents an ideal adventure. Here’s what you can expect on your Allagash River Canoe Trip:

Well-Maintained Campsites

The Allagash River offers well-maintained and marked campsites, each providing essential amenities such as a stone fireplace, picnic table, and outhouse. Therefore, you get to have a comfortable and enjoyable camping experience as you immerse yourself in nature.

Varied River Conditions

The allure of the Allagash River lies in its varied river conditions. As you navigate its waters, you’ll encounter stretches of calm, serene waters perfect for relaxation, as well as sections with beginner-level rapids that add an exciting touch to your journey.

Moreover, the recommended minimum water flow for the Allagash is 700 CFS, and you can check it by visiting the USGS website .

The Magnificent Allagash Falls and Portage

Among the highlights of the Allagash River is the magnificent 40-foot Allagash Falls. To continue your canoe trip, canoeists will need to perform a carry (portage) around this spectacular natural wonder. This short portage, spanning approximately one-third of a mile, adds an element of physical challenge, requiring you to be reasonably fit. However, the effort is well worth it because you get to see the grandeur of the falls up close.

Wildlife Viewing

The Allagash River has gained a reputation as one of the best wildlife-viewing canoe trips. Moose sightings are common along the riverbanks, offering an incredible opportunity to observe these majestic creatures in their natural habitat.

Additionally, birders will be delighted to know that the Allagash country is the southern extent of various Boreal bird species, making it a haven for avian enthusiasts.

No Cell Service

As mentioned earlier, the area is very remote with no cell service, or services of any kind for that matter. So it is highly recommended that you carry a satellite communicator, such as Garmin’s inReach Explorer+, for emergency communication.

Exploring Moose Town and Navigating Gravel Logging Roads

Most people take out in the town of Allagash, which locals refer to as “Moose Town,” due to its abundant moose population. Since reaching the put-in location involves navigating approximately 50 miles of winding gravel logging roads, we highly recommend utilizing the shuttle services available in the towns of Allagash or Saint Francis. This way, you won’t have to drive through the maze-like road network.

However, if you do drive to the put-in in your vehicle, you should have two spares (hint hint).

When Should You Schedule Your Allagash River Canoe Trip

The most crowded months tend to be July and August when there can often be a large number of guided parties and sometimes noisy youth groups on the river. So to avoid these crowds, it’s best to plan your trip around the months of May, June, and September through the first week of October.

May and June

May and June consistently provide good water levels, making the rapids easier to navigate. But the first hatch of black flies also occurs during the last week of May and lasts through the month of June. Still, we have had many wonderful trips on the Allagash in June. Here’s what you need to add to your trip essentials during this time of the year:

  • Bright-colored clothing
  • A bug shirt or head nets
  • Insect repellent

If you do not want to put DEET on your skin, as it does melt plastic, we recommend Old Time Woodsman Fly Dope or another insect repellent with all-natural ingredients.

September Through the First Week of October

In the fall, the water levels tend to be much less predictable than in May and June as water flow in the river is entirely dependent on rainfall during that season. Despite this unpredictability, we have successfully organized numerous Allagash River trips even below our recommended 700 CFS minimum. However, when the water levels dip below 700 CFS, we switch from paddles to setting poles to navigate the rips.

And the best thing about fall? NO BUGS! During these months, there are normally very few bugs, and from mid-September through the first week of October, you also get to witness spectacular fall colors.

To fully enjoy your trip, it’s essential to come prepared. Remember to pack a few extra layers of wool clothing or synthetics as the temperatures can drop, especially at night and in the mornings.

Clothing and Equipment Checklist for the Allagash Canoe Trip

As you prepare for your Allagash River Canoe Trip, gearing up appropriately is essential to make the most of your wilderness adventure. Upon your arrival, we ensure you are well-equipped with vital gear:

  • Sleeping bags for cozy nights
  • Foam pads for comfort
  • Life vests for safety on the water
  • Dry bags to protect your personal items

While we cover these basics, you’ll also need personal essentials, including:

  • Weather-appropriate attire
  • Sturdy footwear for portages
  • Essential toiletries
  • Personal medication

For more information, we refer you to The Allagash Guide by Gil Gilpatrick and the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands Allagash Wilderness Waterway resources.

The Allagash River was the first federally designated “Wild and Scenic River.” For any canoeist who enjoys solitude, remote undeveloped country, and watching wildlife, it should be on your bucket list.

Feel free to explore our Allagash River Canoe Trip page for more resources, or contact us at Mahoosuc Guide Service if you have further questions about the Allagash River Canoe Trip.

Great canoe trip

We paddled from Churchill dam to town over 5 days. Great trip. Roughly 5 hours of relaxed paddling per day. Lots of wildlife including the unwelcome insect kind. We used Allagash Guide Service and we’re very happy with them.

I paddled the Allagash Wilderness Waterway with my son, brother, and cousin in August 2017, and can honestly say it was the best canoe trip I've ever been on. We used the services of Norman L'Italien at Pelletier's Campground for renting canoes and vehicle shuttle. The canoes were exactly where Norm said they would be when we arrived at Chamberlain Bridge, and Norm came later to pick up my car and deliver it to Michaud Farm, our ending point. Norm had lots of good advice about planning our trip, and everything he told me was 100% accurate about the river and what we should expect. Do not hesitate to contact Norm when planning your Allagash River trip. The first part of the Allagash is a series of very large lakes. We had some strong head winds the first two days, with large waves and white caps on the lakes, making for some difficult paddling and slow progress. Crossing Chamberlain Lake was pretty difficult. Same on Eagle lake the next day. Once we entered the river at Churchill Dam, we made much better progress each day. The rapids were tons of fun, exhilarating! The Ranger at Churchill Dam drove our gear down-river for a very modest $10 fee. And there's Wi-Fi at the Ranger's cabin, allowing a chance to check-in with family back home to let them know we were still alive and doing well. Everyone we met along the way was friendly and helpful. We portaged around Long Lake Dam, with some assistance from another couple who happened to be there at the same time. Every Ranger we met was helpful and friendly. The campsites along they Waterway are excellent - no complaints about any of the sites that we stayed at. When we ended our trip at Michaud Farm, we packed up all of our gear and headed to St. Francis, about a 30 minute drive, to shower at Pelletier's Campground, then went to Fort Kent for dinner at the Swampbuck restaurant - which was pretty good. Can't wait to go to the Allagash again!!

We ran the AWW - an fantastic kayak camping experience - with superb logistical help from Tyler Kelly Camp & Guide Services: http://allagashhunting.com/ They are incredibly friendly & nice people. They let us camp in their back yard before starting out & went out of their way to protect our kayaks & gear during the 3 hr back-roads shuttle (they covered everything with a tarp & used soft padding under the tie-ropes). If you want to do theAWW, use Tyler Kelly to help get you there!

allagash river trip review

floating down this river in my canoe was indescribable to most wonderful experience of my life I would recommend this trip to anyone who likes to be alone in the wilderness hopefully they will never overcrowd this place

A fantastic experience canoeing through lakes and wild water rivers. The Allagash wilderness from bears, moose and wild birds is something I will never forget. Went with friends from all over UK.

For the past three years I've been hunting around or near the Allagash and I never would have started if I didn't canoe it twice. I've never been more at peace in life as I am while I'm visiting the Allagash wilderness waterway. From moose to northern lights, you will see it all. If you need to get away from everything, go ahead and check out some of the camps around the waterway. You are able to get to multiple camp sights by vehicle. I would put a fall trip on the Allagash on my bucket list if I hadn't already done it. It's breath taking with the colors and wildlife.
