Destinations, Spectacles and Essência: Wine & Travel Week Transforms Porto into a Wine Tourism Capital

Destinations, Spectacles and Essência: Wine & Travel Week Transforms Porto into a Wine Tourism Capital

19 February 2024

From February 18 to 25, the city of Porto will be the epicenter of a week dedicated to wine tourism, wine and gastronomy during the second edition of Wine & Travel Week (WTW). This special event coincides with the twentieth anniversary of Essência do Vinho - Porto, transforming the city into a tempting stage for lovers of culture, wine and cuisine.

Wine Tourism in the spotlight at WTW

Wine & Travel Week, which focuses on wine tourism, brings together professionals from all over the world for a unique experience. In this edition, more than 100 buyers and journalists specializing in wine tourism will be present, establishing direct contact with a network of more than 100 operators, tourism regions and organizations. The Great Wine Capitals (GWC), representing wine capitals from around the world, will also be present, with countries such as South Africa, Spain, France, India, England, Israel, Japan, Nigeria and Portugal.

The WTW program includes a reception at the World of Wine on February 18th and professional B2B meetings at the Soares dos Reis National Museum on the 19th and 20th. The event will provide an artistic immersion through cultural expressions. On February 19, the GWC's "Best of Wine Tourism" gala, which celebrates excellence in wine tourism, will be held at Casa da Música. The event will include recognition of the Portuguese winners in the different categories. Lunches by renowned chefs such as Renato Cunha and Rui Paula will be featured on the 19th and 20th respectively.

For the first time, WTW will have a guest region, Castilla y León (Spain), which will premiere the show "Merina: Spanish Gold. Oteiza" at the Coliseu do Porto on February 20th. This unique production brings together fashion, dance, music and the performing arts, highlighting Merina sheep's wool. The show, a sensory experience, seeks to associate Castilla y León with an activity that highlights excellence. On the night of the show's world premiere, Junta Castilla y León and the Essencia Company are hosting a dinner and party (with a performance by the Spanish band Siloé) reserved for WTW participants and guests, at the Monastery of São Bento da Vitoria.

Project "Gosto do Porto" ( I Like Porto)

To celebrate Portugal and and its wines, producers and winemakers, Porto and its original gastronomy, restaurateurs, chefs and sommeliers, WTW is launching the " Gosto do Porto" project.

"In all, 50 restaurants, stores and bars offering good food, an eclectic wine list and authentic northern hospitality. From the most traditional tables to Michelin-starred restaurants, the idea is to promote the region's products, Porto's restaurants and wine bars, taking advantage of the fact that Porto is, during these days, a kind of European capital of wine tourism, wine and gastronomy," explains Nuno Guedes Vaz Pires, director of Essência Company, which organizes WTW.

From February 21 to 23, international participants will have the opportunity to explore different portuguese tourism regions. "Gosto do Porto" project has the support of Porto City Council.

Celebrating 20 years of Essência do Vinho - Porto

The 20th edition of Essência do Vinho - Porto, scheduled for February 22 to 25 at the Palácio da Bolsa, promises memorable moments. Highlights include the TOP 10 Portuguese Wines, The Room experience with exclusive wines from 20 great wine families, commented tastings, pairings and masterclasses.

"It seems like yesterday, but it all started in 2004. The event that revolutionized the way Portuguese wines are presented and communicated to the public is celebrating its 20th anniversary and is finalizing one of the best programs ever, which will be detailed over the next few days and will present a memorable set of moments," says Nuno Guedes Vaz Pires.

Wine & Travel Week, including Essência do Vinho - Porto and the Gosto do Porto project, is organized by Essência Company.

Wine & Travel Week Premiere Draws Support from the GWCGN and Tourism Industry Leaders

More than 750 delegates, including 350 tourism operators, wine buyers, industry experts, and wine and travel enthusiasts from across the globe, attended the week-long fair, establishing a high standard of distinction for future editions.

The GWC Global Network celebrates wine tourism excellence in 11 major wine regions, and offers an international platform for collaboration, the exchange of ideas, and sharing of best practices. Network members work together to enhance their global visibility, support each other’s wine and tourism industries, and encourage sustainable wine tourism practices.

The partnership between the GWC Global Network and the likes of Essência and Tourism Portugal in supporting the Wine and Travel Week’s debut was a natural collaboration, given that Porto, Portugal, is one of the regions represented by the network.

Wine tourism professional Trade Show

This collaboration allowed for an increased international reach, and remarkable opportunities for attendees to connect with the global wine tourism community. The Wine and Travel Week aimed to be a professional and business-oriented event that would also facilitate the sharing of knowledge about a fast-growing sector in the world. The event’s line-up entailed a Trade Show, Forum, Wine Fair, and Experiences programme that offered buyers from multiple markets and journalists various avenues to explore and savour the wines of Portugal and other renowned wine regions. Twenty-two exhibitors from the GWC member cities, seventeen journalists and eleven speakers from GWC were also in the forums.

Wine & Travel Week Forum

The GWCGN’s involvement stands testament to its commitment to being a mouthpiece for merited wine destinations among wine tourism professionals from across the globe. According to managing director, Catherine Leparmentier, GWCs involvement carries much weight as it can continue expanding its wine tourism network and involve associated travel and industry experts, Destinations representatives, Incoming travel agents, winery representatives, and journalists in the event.

“Internationally, wine-related tourism remains a significant industry niche that holds exciting prospects when it comes to setting the standards for innovative offerings, trade excellence and, importantly, sustainability,” says Leparmentier.

According to Leparmentier, as a result of the outstanding outcomes of the Wine and Travel Week and the fair as a whole, GWC is contemplating the possibility of renewing its partnership next year. This partnership would provide further support for wine tourism businesses interested in expanding their networks and contributing to the development of the industry.

A Porto Music Festival: Ocean and Douro Sunset Vibes

Among the activities on our agenda is this year’s Wine & Travel Week, taking place from February 18th to 25th , and the 20th edition of the Essência do Vinho festival, taking place from February 22nd to 25th at the Palácio da Bolsa. These two events are interlinked and aim to promote wine tourism through networking activities, experiences that help spread the word about the essence of wine, and getting to know various places where grapes are grown and harvested. In March, from the 1st to the 10th , we can count on the 44th edition of Fantasporto, Oporto’s International Film Festival, which takes place at the Batalha Cinema Center, where a wide range of films are presented for all film lovers.

In mid-spring, two events truly mark our city: the famous academic festival known as Queima das Fitas, which takes place from May 4th to 11th at the Queimódromo, and in June, the iconic Serralves em Festa. This festival celebrates cultural diversity above all, as well as the artistic innovation that is being felt at the moment, through a program that encompasses multiple artistic strands, such as: performing arts, visual arts, music, and sculpture, among others.

It’s followed by one of the most eagerly awaited moments of the year, the Festa de S. João (St. John’s Festival), which takes place from June 23rd to 24th , welcoming summer with lots of festivities and joy. All day and all night, people hit the streets, releasing hot air balloons and holding various parties all over the city. It’s also during this time of year that numerous music festivals are held nationwide. In the city of Porto, and still in June, we can count on NOS Primavera Sound, from June 6th to 8th in the stunning Parque da Cidade, and in July, from the 19th to the 21st , MEO Marés Vivas in Vila Nova de Gaia, at the Madalena campsite. In July we can also count on the Douro & Porto Wine Festival, taking place in Lamego on the 5th and 6th.

Between the end of September and the beginning of October , we can count on the much-anticipated Francesinhas Festival, where various restaurants in Oporto come together to present their interpretation of this iconic dish. And finally, during December , we have the city of Porto embellished with the famous Christmas decorations, the typical markets of this time of year, the charity parties that spread throughout the city, and the long-awaited New Year’s Eve party, full of concerts, joy, good cheer and a firework display that you won’t soon forget.

The city’s commitment to preserving its heritage, while embracing innovation and an ever-increasing cultural diversity, has allowed Oporto to become a dynamic cultural center, where tradition and modernity merge perfectly.

This Cultural Wine District in Porto, Portugal, Has 12 Restaurants and Immersive Drink Experiences — Here's How to See It

It'll WOW you.

Portugal's northern city of Porto is well-known for the scenic Douro River that traverses the city, its proximity to the country's Douro Valley, and the production of port. Just minutes away from the city's center, though, is a multilayered experience that encompasses the best of Porto's history, and of course, wine. WOW, The New Cultural District , formerly known as the World of Wine, is located in the historic Vila Nova de Gaia neighborhood. First opened in the summer of 2020, the whopping 500,000-square-foot space includes seven interactive museum experiences, and 12 restaurants, bars, and cafes housed within restored port wine cellars. There's also a variety of retail spaces and a school that offers workshops on wine and gastronomy.

Beyond the wine, you'll also be able to enjoy chocolate tastings, exhibitions of Portuguese fashion through the years, or simply people watch in a central square that offers magnetic views of the old city, Dom Luís I Bridge, and glowing Douro River below. WOW's debut made it one of Europe's biggest tourism developments, at the time, and now that international travel has picked up again, there's no better time for a visit.

The Best Things to do at WOW

Party in the Pink Palace

Paula Galindo Valle/Travel + Leisure

Get a hands-on experience with the ubiquitous summer wine: rosé. At Pink Palace , 11 colorful rooms offer an education on how rosé grapes are grown around the world along with Instagrammable props. You'll also be able to try five different rosés along the way: Quinta do Vale do Bragão Rosé, AIX Gran Vin de Provence Rosé, Mateus Rosé, Vértice Rosé Bruto, and Croft Pink Rosé Port.

Get Ready for Class

There are 250 grapes indigenous to Portugal, and at WOW's Wine School, you'll learn about many of them, from alvarinho to touriga nacional. The premises feature three training rooms, two with a tasting room and another with a kitchen, and classes focus on wine selection and food-and-wine pairing, among other customizable courses.

Come for the Wine, Stay for the Fashion

Housed in a historic building from the 18th century, the Porto Fashion & Fabric Museum includes two collections showcasing different sections of the fashion and textile industry in Portugal. The first level explains the integral role that the textile industry has played in Portugal's economy, as well as all the steps of production, from creating the material to weaving the final piece. On the second level, gain a true appreciation of Portuguese fashion with a look at styles from more than 46 national designers.

Taste a Range of Varietals

Portugal is a small but mighty country in many ways, including its microcosm of different landscapes that produce some truly excellent wines. At The Wine Experience , the art of demystifying wine is presented to visitors through education on the soil, climate, and grapes that produce the region's sparkling, red, and white wines. This is also a sensory experience, where tastings, vision, and smell are employed to deepen your relationship to the glass.

Get to Know Chocolate in a Different Way

WOW's Chocolate Story takes visitors through an in-depth, 12-step journey, from cocoa plantations to chocolate-manufacturing processes. You'll learn about the origins of chocolate, how to differentiate its varying flavor notes, and of course, have an opportunity to taste the chocolate.

Save Room for a Meal (or Two)

After exploring WOW, you'll likely work up an appetite, and there are no shortage of options among the 12 restaurants , bars, and cafes. For an elevated dining experience, head to 1828, which offers numerous cuts of steak, seafood, and seasonal dishes. For brunch, V.P. serves classics like eggs Benedict and pancakes with fruit compote. Golden Catch offers a number of local seafood dishes, and a catch of the day that's served with mussels, prawns, and coriander. For vegetarians, Root & Vine offers dishes like a shiitake mushroom and white truffle oil soup, and tofu with caramelized pineapple and quinoa.

Where to Stay During a Visit to WOW

After a full day of exploration, there's no better place to retreat than The Yeatman Hotel , just steps from WOW. The 109-room luxury boutique hotel offers the most enviable views in the city from its multileveled terraces, and serves as a great retreat from the bustling streets across the river. Three-and-a-half acres of lush garden drape the property, and a collection of art and antiques highlight the hotel's commitment to showcasing the region's history. Each accommodation is named after one of the hotel's 109 Portuguese wine producers and comes equipped with a furnished terrace or balcony. Three on-site dining experiences include The Yeatman Gastronomic Restaurant , which has garnered two Michelin stars under the direction of chef Ricardo Costa. For wine lovers, there are a number of opportunities, including the popular Thursday summer wine dinners, tastings from the hotel's roster of 25,0000 Portuguese wine bottles, and WOW just below.

Wine tasting in Porto: where, when and how

' src=

Most people don’t realise how much there is to know about wine tasting in Porto. Besides the famous Port wine cellars, there are some amazing wine bars in the city where you can taste wines from all around the country. There is also a fantastic wine museum that, although not dedicated specifically to Portuguese wines, is a wealth of knowledge about wine making. It truly is a fantastic place, and I’ll talk more about it in the article.

No time to read a long article? Here’s a summary:

  • The most UNIQUE wine tasting in Porto takes place at the Port wine lodges . My favourite ones are: Graham’s (especially their premium tasting at the Vintage Room ) Cockburn’s (it’s the most beautiful lodge) Poças (a small scale producer)
  • The most FUN wine experience is probably to have a glass of Port wine while enjoying a Fado show at Calém Port wine lodge 🙂
  • There is also a fantastic wine museum in Porto, where you can learn all about wine making. It’s not specifically about Portuguese wines.
  • If you just want to enjoy a glass of wine at a wine bar, head to the Wine Quay, Prova and Mind The Glass.

portoalities private wine tour douro valley

  • You can also join a group tour in Douro Valley (~100€ / pax) or, if you’re serious about wine tasting, you should consider booking our premium & private tour in Douro Valley , where we’ll take you to two fantastic family-owned small scale producers.
  • Our private full day tour in Porto is also a good option, particularly for those that want to explore Portuguese wines without leaving the city, as we will take you to the most exclusive (and secret!) wine lodge 😉

Enough talking. Let’s take a closer look at wine tasting in Porto! 🙂

Go for a wine tasting at the Port lodges

If you are in the city for a couple of days you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to do a wine tasting in Porto at one of our famous Port wine lodges .

There, you will be able to not only to learn about the production process of Port wine, but also to taste different Ports. The wines are produced in Douro Valley, but the big brands still age its Ports at the Port wine lodges in Gaia, and there you’ll be able to see the large vats and the smaller wine barrels… it is magic! 🙂

What are the best Port wine lodges?

I’ve already written about the best Port lodges in Porto . Nonetheless, let me give you some advice on how to pick the best Port wine lodge for you :

  • If you want to have the most informative tour, with a detailed explanation of the Port wine production process, than I highly recommend you to take a guided tour and wine tasting at Graham’s . Moreover, Graham’s has an incredible terrace overlooking the Douro river. It is stunning and a great place to have a glass of Port with some tapas!

group friends toast port wine

  • If you want a good value for the money I recommend you to visit a Port wine tasting at Calém combined with a live Fado show. It’s a great way to experience Port wine and enjoy some traditional Portuguese music. You can get your online ticket for a Fado Show at Calém’s Port wine lodge . The only bad thing about Calém is that, as it is by the riverside, it is usually full of people.

fado calem wine lodge porto

  • If you want to visit a really unique Port wine lodge, then I recommend you to book a guided tour and wine tasting at Cockburn’s because you will have the very rare opportunity of seeing their coopers’ team repairing the wine barrels. It is also the largest (and hence most impressive) working cellar in the city.

wine barrels cockburns port wine lodges porto

  • If you prefer to visit a small scale producer, I recommend you to try the wine tasting at Poças , which is one of being one of the very few Port wine lodges in the hands of a Portuguese family (unfortunately, most brands belongs to English companies). So, if you are looking for a traditional, family owned Port wine lodge, look no further!

More useful information about the Port wine lodges

  • Where to go: Usually, the Port wine lodges by the riverside are PACKED. The groups can take up to 30 people, which, in my opinion, decreases the overall quality of the experience. You won’t be able to ask a lot of questions or pause to take pictures. Therefore, I always prefer to go to the furthest Port houses, as the tours are more intimate and personal.
  • What to taste: In most lodges, the standard tasting is quite poor, consisting of entry level wines. In my opinion, it is really worth it to pay a little extra to taste better Port wines, specially because the differences between rubys and tawnies are easier to spot in older wines. Better wine tastings allow you to get a proper introduction to Port wines and to better understand your own preferences, so go for it! 🙂 In my opinion, you should try at least a 10 years old Tawny, an LBV and a White Port.
  • How many Port houses: This is a personal choice but in my opinion, you should focus on quality rather than quantity. It is better to visit two Port wine lodges with informative and well structured tours, rather than visit five with awful wines and scripted tours. In that regard, I find Graham’s Port lodge particularly good.
  • Audio guided visits: If you already know a little bit about Port wines, then you might find the visit to Taylor a rather interesting one. The tour is completely automated (no guides, only audio guides), which is great for people like me, who prefer detailed information at my own pace. However, it is not the best lodge for groups of friends, and there will be no interaction among you!
  • Be careful with free wine tastings in Porto! This might seem a stupid advice, but it certainly isn’t. If you buy a cable car ticket, go for a hop on hop off tour or have the 6 bridges cruise you’ll get a free Port wine tasting at one of the Port houses. Don’t expect good quality wines though!

WoW: an incredible wine museum

portuguese wine regions

There is a new fantastic wine museum in town called WoW – Wine Museum . I was a little bit sceptic at first – I mean, there are already so many Port wine lodges in town, most of them with guided visits, so what could possibly a new Wine Museum add up? But the truth is that WoW – Wine Museum is a fantastic place for those of you that really want to learn not only about general wine production processes but also the different Portuguese wine regions.

Moreover, WoW – Wine Museum is a very interactive museum, where you’ll be able to take a few tests to discover what is your style of wine, what is the grape variety that best suits you, etc. It’s SO COOL.

At the end, a wine tasting that includes a red, a white and a 2018 LBV Port wine.

The online ticket to WoW – Wine Museum costs 20€ and you should get yours now!

More wine tasting in Porto: the best wine bars

For those of you who are not so found of Port wine (maybe you just haven’t found the right one… ;), there are some other cool options. Slowly but steadily wine is becoming increasingly popular and respected in the country, with proper wine bars where you can make a wine tasting in Porto. These are perfect places to have a glass of wine to go along with some petiscos , such as creamy sheep cheese, Portuguese prosciutto or the traditional canned sardines. And the best wine bars in Porto are…

Wine Quay Bar

Cais da estiva, 111 | porto.

wine quay bar porto

The Wine Quay Bar is definitely one of my favourite spots at the moment, as it is one of the few places for a proper wine tasting in Porto. It is a cozy wine bar, very close to Luiz I iron bridge , and facing the Port houses on the other side of the Douro river. There you can find a short yet careful selection of wines from several wine regions, like Douro Valley, the Green Wine Region, Alentejo and more. The prices for a glass of wine range from 3,50€ to 7€, which is fairly reasonable, if the wines are good (which they are). At the Wine Quay bar you have many petiscos to go along with your wine, such as a great selection of Portuguese cheeses and Portuguese canned fish (sardines, mackerel, codfish and anchovies) and, naturally, our amazing smoked meats. How to get there: São Bento train station is a 10 minutes walking distance.

Capela Incomum – Wine Bar

Travessa do carregal, 77 | porto.

capela incomum porto counter

Capela Incomum is a cosy wine bar in Porto, and it has a rather unusual location: after all, it is built inside an old chapel that hasn’t been used for the past 50 years. Given it’s intimate atmosphere, with candle lights and blues’ music, Capela Incomum is the perfect spot for a romantic date, and for those looking for a first wine tasting in Porto. This wine bar has a short – and a bit predictable – wine list, mostly focused on wines from the Douro Valley. Here you can also find a few sparkling wines, green wines and also Port wine (even though from a single main stream brand – what a pity). To go along, you can pick some home made bruschettas, cheeses and sausages. Capela Incomum may not be the best spot for wine connaisseurs , but it’s still a great choice for a wonderful night in Porto. How to get there: Aliados subway station is a 10 minutes walking distance.

Prova – Porto Wine Bar

Rua de ferreira borges, 86 | porto.

prova wine bar

Prova is yet another perfect wine bar for an intimate date in Porto. Located right next to the red ironed Ferreira Borges market , this beautiful and discrete wine bar offers a small yet careful selection of wines (ranging from 4€ – 10€ / glass), as well as a superb cheese board. At this place you can really ask the waiter for an advice on what wine to drink according to your palate, something that unfortunately is not that common in the city. For this particular reason, Prova is one of the best spots to make an introductory wine tasting in Porto. How to get there: São Bento train station is a 10 minutes walking distance.

Rua Miguel Bombarda, 78 | Porto

genuino natural wine bar porto

If you dig more the natural wines, then Genuíno is the best wine bar in Porto for you!

It is a cute little wine bar that serves natural wines (a couple of them by the glass), and great tapas to share. The food menu changes every week and it always includes a soup, some delicious tapas, a couple of main dishes and desserts. All the wines are natural, and surprisingly good (yes, I am quite suspicious of natural wines in general :P). Moreover, the owners of Genuíno are genuinely happy to meet their customers.

Genuíno is growing very popular with locals and it has some strange opening hours, so I recommend you to book a table before heading there.

How to get there: Lapa and Aliados subway stations are a 15 minutes walking distance.

What about natural wines bars in Porto?

cave bon vivant bar

We the Portuguese don’t really care that much about natural wines; this being said, more and more wine producers in Douro Valley and other wine regions are producing wines with little intervention (particularly in the vineyards), and that translates into new natural wines’ bars opening up in our city.

In Porto, there are basically three decent natural wines’ bars: Genuíno, that I already mentioned above, but also A Cave do Bon Vivant and Gito Wines.

Buying wines in Porto: best supermarket options

portuguese wines buy supermarket porto

  • RUN AWAY from the most popular brands such as Gazela, Muralhas de Monção, Mateus Rosé, etc. These are not wines, they’re rubbish.

Above all, forget about the nonsense that Alvarinho is the best grape in the Green Wine Region, and that Touriga Nacional is the best in Portugal. Those dogmas make no sense. Be brave enough to try new flavours, new grape varieties, new regions: discover your own palate, go for great wine tastings in Porto, discover the amazing world of the Portuguese wines! 🙂

Why Porto Is the Ideal Getaway for Any Wine Lover

Visit the city and surrounding valley famous for fortified wine, where the Douro River meets the sea.

I arrived in porto via the sea, though unlike generations of visitors, I didn't come by ship. Instead, I was transported here by a morsel of tuna tartare, served with an oyster on a mottled stone that echoed the oyster's stippling, and a juicy scallop returned to its shell and painted tableside with a lemon sauce.

The dish is the work of chef Rui Paula at two-Michelin-starred Casa de Chá da Boa Nova , a ridiculously glamorous former teahouse on the seafront designed by Porto's great architect, Álvaro Siza Vieira. The turquoise vista beyond the terrace offers a picturesque reminder that the city owes its beauty and fame (not to mention its legendary fortified wine) to its strategic position on the Atlantic coast.

By the time my husband and I made our way back into town, we had eaten 12 perfect courses and, via an exceptional wine list, drunk our way from Monção, on the norther border with Spain, to Ribatejo, just above Lisbon. With over 250 indigenous grape varieties, Portugal is one of the world's most underrated wine-producing nations.

In Porto proper, the graceful iron arc of the Luís I Bridge spans the Douro River, multicolored buildings rising in tiers on either side. The vast, orange-roofed port cellars face the Bishop's Palace and the Cathedral; the banks' steep symmetry is breathtaking. Beyond are beautiful stone churches and houses clad in the famous azulejo tiles. It turns out that it's as hard to stay blasé about the scenery in Porto as it is to stay hungry.

And that's impossible. "People here snack all the time! They live around food," laughed Carine Castro of Culinary Backstreets tours . Her tour was not for the unfit: nearly six hours of walking around Porto's old town, with frequent pauses for snacks, many practically a meal in themselves. The highlight was cachorrinhos, pork sausage and melted cheese with spicy sauce in crusty bread, from Cervejaria Gazela , a simple hangout with high stools and beer on tap that was featured in Anthony Bourdain's Parts Unknown .

After saying goodbye to Castro on the quayside, we figured all that walking had earned us an early aperitif. In the Museu do Vinho do Porto's bar , I questioned the barmaid about white port, the red's lighter, less famous sibling, usually served with tonic before dinner. She whipped out a range: Niepoort's 10-year-old, Royal Oporto's Extra Dry, Dow's Fine White, and even a Lagrima, the intensely sweet and viscous version, more dessert wine than aperitif. For the curious, several port houses—Quinta do Noval, Sandeman, Cálem—have tasting rooms, tours, or both, directly opposite the museum.

I met up with Zoe Graham of Churchill's, which was founded by her father, John Graham, after his family sold their generations-old port house. She was delighted to hear I was trying so many local delicacies but insisted I couldn't leave the city without tasting a francesinha, a monster sandwich of ham and sausage slathered in cheese and a beer sauce. It sounded terrifying. ("Great hangover food," she said.) I eventually succumbed to one at T&C, one of the dozen eateries in the new World of Wine museum complex . In this cozy, low-lit enclave of stone and wood, once a port wine cellar, the sauce features port instead of beer, which feels right.

WoW was conceived by Adrian Bridge, CEO of The Fladgate Partnership, which owns multiple port houses. There's plenty to discover in the complex's wine "experience" (Bridge worries the word "museum" is too static), which inventively simplifies the subject without talking down to wine-lovers. The cork experience is also great fun, with information on NASA's use of this versatile bark in space shuttles, and the doubtful pleasure of finding out how many wine corks you weigh (which I wish I'd tried before that francesinha).

Our final meal in the city was as fabulous as our first but radically different. In the sliver of garden behind Almeja , with his dog and tiny son toddling around, young chef João Cura served falafel, cinnamon-sprinkled vegetable samosas on a yellow azulejo tile, and amberjack, a tender fish from the Azores islands. These far-flung influences were a parting reminder that no port lives by local goods alone and that in Porto, ideas and ingredients flow in and out as easily as water, or wine, or people.

Getting There

TAP Air Portugal flies nonstop from Newark, New Jersey, to Porto. Take a private tour with 2021 Food & Wine Game Changer Modern Adventure on a seven-night trip through Lisbon, Porto, and the Douro Valley from July 24–30 hosted by chef and cookbook author Chris McDade and his sommelier wife, Natalie Grindstaff (from $6,900, modernadventure.com ) . You could also arrive by boat: Scenic River hosts a regular 11-day cruise from Porto along the Douro River that includes visits to vineyards and estate tastings (from $5,095, scenicusa.com ) . Portocvb.com and visitporto.travel are great resources for those planning a trip to the city and surrounding region.

Where to Stay

Torel palace porto.

As well as marvelous carved ceilings (one whimsically hung with suspended books), this 19th-century former school is a hotel and home to Blind, a monochrome bar and poolside restaurant where we ate plenty of fish and drank wines from the nearby Douro Valley. (Rooms from $262, torelpalaceporto.com )

The Yeatman Hotel

The Fladgate Partnership responsible for the WoW also owns this vast, white luxury hotel with a decanter-shaped pool, a Michelin-starred restaurant, and stunning views. (Rooms from $389, the-yeatman-hotel.com )

A River of Wine

Until it was dammed in the 1960s, the journey up the Douro from Porto was hellish, and the winding roads were worse. At Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo , a Douro Valley winery and boutique Relais & Châteaux hotel, there is old footage of bargemen frantically negotiating the wild river, their shallow boat piled precariously with barrels. These days, the trip is easy and breathtakingly beautiful. (There's even a train from Porto to Pinhão.) Most estates on the river's steep, vine-coveredslopes offer tastings, tours, and food. Quinta do Bomfim even has a fascinating mini museum. I took a peaceful river cruise past vines, famous estate names, and the odd dramatic granite outcrop. Mostly, though, I ate, drank, and gawped, usually at the same time: in the cool green dining room at Quinta da Pacheca, a winery hotel with 10 standalone barrel bedrooms among the vines (rooms from $282, quintadapacheca.com ); above the Bomfim vines at Casa dos Ecos , a laid-back pop-up from Michelin-starred chef Pedro Lemos; on the terrace at Quinta da Roêda , home of Croft's port; or over a superb dinner at Quinta Nova's restaurant, Terraçu's, where the sommelier heated tongs to twist the entire neck off a bottle of 1997 port.

Where to Eat & Drink

Snacks are hard to forgo in Porto. One evening, tantalized by all the tiny, brightly lit eateries, we tried, and failed, to stop for a small plate in every interesting-looking joint we saw, wolfing bifanas—buns filled with tender pulled pork marinated in garlic and spice—in Conga and hitching ourselves onto barstools at Pedro dos Frangos for piles of cumin-flavored tripe, sausage, ham, and white beans. Porto's inhabitants are known as tripeiros, or tripe-eaters, supposedly because they donated all their meat to the army in the 15th century, leaving nothing but offal. If that's not your bag, stop by for the fresh sardines at Salmão along with a glass of Vinho Verde, the region's crisp white wine, or delicious, market-fresh fish casserole at tiny Taberna dos Mercadores in the riverside Ribeira quarter. Be sure to finish with cake and port at Capela Incomum , a funky little converted chapel.

Porto is a beautiful city that sits at the mouth of the Douro River, in northern Portugal. Spending a weekend in Porto is the perfect way to discover everything that Porto is known for , from old-world architecture and churches, to gorgeous painted tiles (called azulejos), museums, wines, and more.

This weekend in Porto guide covers how to get there, where to stay, and must-do activities. Read on to learn key tips, like how you can see beautiful azulejos at the Chapel of Souls, cruise along the Douro River, and taste Port wine in Vila Nova de Gaia.

A Bit of Porto History

How long to spend in porto, how to fly into porto, how to get from porto airport to the city center, taking the train to porto, taking the bus to porto, how to get around porto, 1. visit porto cathedral (sé do porto), 2. walk across the dom luis i bridge, 3. explore the ribeira neighborhood, 4. taste port wine in vila nova de gaia, 5. admire liberdade square (praça da liberdade), 6. cruise along the douro river, 7. pop into livraria lello, 8. climb up clérgios tower, 9. peek inside the são bento train station, 10. wander rua das flores, 11. gaze at the igreja de santo ildefonso, 12. watch the sunset from miradouro da vitória, 13. visit the capela das almas (chapel of souls), 14. mercado do bolhão (bolhao market), 15. take a tour of bolsa palace (palácio da bolsa), 16. see an art installation called half rabbit, douro valley full-day wine trip with lunch includes: , learn about porto, visit porto in the low or off-season, walk or use public transport, stay local, shop local (skip the starbucks), spend more time in lisbon, porto, portugal faq, weekend in porto: final thoughts.

According to records, Porto started as a town that was founded in 417. Over the centuries it had various rulers, including the Suevi, the Goths and the Moors.

The town grew into a commercial hub, which developed the area into a city. And when the “Age of Discoveries” arrived, Porto had an important role in European affairs.

The city became a major trading port, and in the 15th century it was one of the greatest ship building centers in Portugal.

It was also in the 15th century that Portugal, including Porto, became the first European nation to take a big part in the Trans-Atlantic slave trade. The Portuguese acquired slaves to do labor on Atlantic African island plantations, and then later for plantations in Brazil and the Caribbean.

In 1756, Porto became an important industrial center because of its wine production. Many wealthy families built beautiful Baroque and neoclassical buildings during that period.

Throughout the 19th century, Porto became known as a progressive and liberal place. The city fought for civil rights, and many important writers and poets lived there during that time.

Today, Porto is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city is known for its famous wines, beautiful old town, Baroque churches, azulejos, and more.

With a weekend in Porto you’re able to see all of the city’s main sights, which are within walkable distances of the city center. Spending a weekend in Porto is enough time to see the highlights, taste local dishes, try Port wine, and take in Portuguese culture.

If you have more than two days to spend in Porto, you can fit in visits to the city’s museums, lesser-known sights, and go on a tour of the Douro Valley. While two days is enough, spending more time than a weekend in Porto will give you a more in-depth experience.

How to Get to Porto

You can get to Porto by flight, train, bus or car. The city has an international airport, national and international rail links, two main train stations, and several bus stations.

Porto’s Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) is located 11 kilometers northwest of the city center. There are a few low cost carriers that fly into Porto, including Transavia, EasyJet, Ryanair and the Portuguese national carrier TAP.

You can get from Porto airport to the city center by taxi, which takes about 20 minutes, or by metro, which takes about 40 minutes. By taxi is the quickest way to get from Porto airport to the city. The Porto airport taxi ride will take about 20 minutes and cost around 30€.

The most affordable option is to take the direct metro from Porto airport to Trindade Station. The station is a 5 minute walk from the airport’s arrivals terminal. The journey into the city takes about 40 minutes. Tickets cost just a few euros, and can be bought from a machine at the station.

Local and regional trains connect to Porto’s beautiful São Bento Station, which is just around the corner from Avenida dos Aliados. A few kilometers east of Porto’s city center is Campanhã Train Station, where interregional and international trains arrive.

Porto is conveniently interlinked by rail with several Portuguese cities, including Lisbon , Faro, Coimbra, Albufeira, Braga, Lagos , and Aveiro.

Rede Expressos, Park of the Camellias Bus Terminal, and Campanhã Bus terminal are the three main bus terminals in Porto . You can connect from these bus stations to the city center by taxi or metro.

Where to Stay in Porto

Porto has several central neighborhoods that are lovely to stay in, but the two most popular are Ribeira and Baixa. Both are great options for staying in while spending a weekend in Porto because they are central to all of the major attractions and other things to do and see in Porto.

Ribeira is a central Porto neighborhood that sits right along the Douro River. It’s a gorgeous, vibrant neighborhood that is within walking distance of many of Porto’s main sites. While this is a popular neighborhood to stay in, know that it can be very busy with tourists.

For a well located hotel that has rooms which look out over the Douro River, stay at Gran Cruz House . For a more budget friendly option, check into the Hostel One Ribeira. They offer private rooms as well as dorms.

If you want to be central while spending a weekend in Porto but would like to be close to nightlife, food, and drinks, stay in Baixa. This neighborhood is also known as “Sé,” referring to the Sé cathedral which is in the neighborhood.

Baixa is just up the hill from Ribeira, and so it’s a very central neighborhood as well. Baixa is a bit less touristy, filled with gorgeous churches, coffee shops, little bars, restaurants and more. For a mid-range hotel, stay at Hotel Moon & Sun . A budget friendly option is the Passenger Hostel .

For a more local experience while spending a weekend in Porto, stay in Bonfim, which is east of the city center. There are far less tourists in this area, which means you’ll find yourself more immersed in local Porto life. In Bonfim you’ll find fun bars, coffee shops, restaurants, and it’s quite close to the famous Chapel of Souls.

Bonfim is about a 20 minute walk from central Porto, or a quick bus ride. Bonfim is a more affordable neighborhood to stay in. Dear Porto Guest House is a lovely, good-value pick!

The best way to get around while spending a weekend in Porto is on foot. The city is quite compact, and so many of the main sites are a walkable distance, regardless of where you stay. If you tire of walking, the city has an extensive public transportation system that’s operated by the Sociedade de Transportes Colectivos do Porto. You can hop on the metro, buses, or trams.

16 Things to Do on a Weekend in Porto

Below are 16 of my favourite things to do on a weekend in Porto. Before we dive into the list, it’s important to note that you likely can’t fit everything in this list into one weekend.

The reason I’m sharing 16 things to do is so that you can have a full picture of how you can spend your weekend in Porto. From this list, you can choose the sites and activities that interest you the most.

Want to save this list? I’ve created a Google Map with all of these locations and activities pinned. View and save the map, here .

The Porto Cathedral (Sé do Porto in Portuguese) is one of the most important religious buildings in Porto. The cathedral sits at one of Porto’s highest points, overlooking the city.

The construction of the Sé do Porto started in the 12th century, but it was rebuilt and also renovated a couple times throughout the centuries. This is why the Sé has a couple of architectural styles today.

When you first see the Sé from the outside, it looks a bit like a fortress or a castle, and so sometimes people don’t even realize it’s a cathedral.

You’ll notice that it has Baroque influence, with a Romanesque facade, and its cloister and one of the chapels are Gothic in style. There is no entry fee to go into the Porto Cathedral, which makes it a perfect free activity to do while spending a weekend in Porto.

The Dom Luis I Bridge is one of 6 bridges that cross the Douro River, bringing people from Porto to Vila Nova de Gaia, the municipality on the other side of the river.

Walking across the upper level of the bridge delivers some excellent views of the Porto cityscape and the Douro River.

It only takes about 5-10 minutes to walk across the bridge. Since a visit to Vila Nova de Gaia is recommended while you’re enjoying a weekend in Porto, it’s easy to add this quick activity to your itinerary.

Be sure to stop a couple times to take in the views and snap some photos. As you walk, be careful of the trams that also cross on the upper deck of the bridge!

Ribeira is a central Porto neighborhood that is right on the shores of the Douro River. It’s a beautiful, vibrant neighborhood that is within walking distance of many of Porto’s main sites.

This is a great neighborhood to spend some time wandering during your weekend in Porto. You’ll have views of the Douro River and Dom Luis I Bridge.

Be sure to stop in the Ribeira Square (Praça da Ribeira in Portuguese), which dates back to the Middle Ages. It’s one of the oldest squares in the city, and you’ll find shops, cafes, and restaurants there.

And, walk along the Cais de Ribeira. It’s a riverfront promenade that goes along the Douro River. On one side, you have views of stacked, colorful buildings, and the other side, the river.

Venture over to the Elevador da Ribeira, a pedestrian elevator that connects Ribeira to another neighborhood, Barredo. Riding the elevator costs just a few euros, and you’ll be treated to great views of the city.

What I enjoyed most about Ribeira was it’s energy in the evening. Walking around, I noticed lots of talented street performers, and the restaurants were always full of locals and tourists enjoying a meal.

Tasting Port wine is a must-do on a weekend in Porto, and there’s no better way to do it than by going for a wine tasting in Vila Nova de Gaia.

You’ll for sure want to try port wine, which is a sweet red fortified wine that originates in Portugal.

Many of Porto’s most well-known wine cellars are in this municipality, which is just across the Douro River from Porto.

You can book a tour of a wine cellar, where you’ll learn all about wine production in Portugal, particularly port wine. Most of the tours run from 1-2 hours, and include a tasting at the end.

Calem, Porto Cruz and Sandeman are the most touristy wine cellars. They run tours often, for an affordable price. Head to Taylor’s or Graham’s for a fancier experience.

Liberdade Square (Praça da Liberdade in Portuguese) is Porto’s main square. It connects the old town of Porto with the modern part of the city.

In the middle of the square there’s a 10-meter bronze equestrian statue of King Peter IV from 1862. The King is holding the Constitution in his hands, and showing it to the people.

At one end of Liberdade Square is Porto’s main artery, Avenida dos Aliados. This avenue is filled with modernist buildings that were built in the 20th century, like Porto’s town hall, and the city’s banks. The square is easy to add to your weekend in Porto itinerary because it’s close to other main sites in Porto, like Clérigos Tower and São Bento Railway Station.

The Douro River is the third-longest in the Iberian Peninsula. The river passes through Porto, and shortly after spills out into the Atlantic ocean.

The Douro River is tied to much of Porto’s history, particularly its history of wine production. The river was essential for transporting wine from the local vineyards of the Douro Valley to Porto.

Rabelo boats, which are typical of Porto and the Douro River, would carry wine barrels (and people!).

Going for a Douro River cruise out of Porto is a great way to see the city from a different perspective. Floating down the river while gazing at Porto’s beautiful cityscape is a wonderful way to spend a few hours on your weekend in Porto.

You’ll be able to see Porto’s famous 6 bridges: Dom Luis I Bridge, Ponte de Infante, Dona Maria Pia Bridge, Ponte de São João, Freixo Bridge, and Ponte da Arrábida.

This Douro River Panoramic Tour by Boat is a 2 hour long cruise on the river between Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia. The cruise includes a glass of wine! There’s also the option to take this cruise at sunset. Book the tour here.

Livraria Lello is one of the oldest and most iconic bookstores in Portugal. The bookstore was opened by the brothers José and António Lello on Rua das Carmelitas in Porto.

Livraria Lello was originally a hotspot for Portugal’s literary scene, and has now become a popular tourist site.

Crowds line up to visit Livraria Lello because of its neo-gothic features. The bookstore has a stained glass ceiling, wood carvings, ladders and rails for reaching books, and even a special room that is home to the bookstore’s oldest and rarest books.

The author of the Harry Potter book series, J.K. Rowling lived and taught English in Porto from 1991 to 1993. During that time she was a loyal customer of Livraria Lello. Because of this, it’s rumored that Livraria Lello in part inspired Harry Potter.

Nowadays, Livraria Lello is so popular that you have to book a ticket in advance to visit the shop. On busy days, you’ll need to line up outside before being admitted, even if you already have your ticket.

While some people don’t like how busy the bookstore is, it’s worth a quick visit to admire the shop’s interesting features. Tickets are just a few euros, and if you’re a reader, you can pick up a book while you’re there.

Fun tip! After the library, it’s a quick 3 minute walk to Jardim da Cordoaria. This is a small park that’s filled with grass, beautiful trees, and sculptures. I really enjoyed grabbing a cup of coffee to enjoy while people watching in this quiet park.

The Clérigos Church is a Baroque church in the center of Porto. The church is known for Its 75 meter tall bell tower, the Torre dos Clérigos, which is visible from many points in the city.

Both the church and the tower were built in the 18th century. Today, the Clérigos Tower is the tallest campanile in Portugal.

Climbing up to the top of the tower is a feat! To reach the top, you have to climb more than 200 steep steps. As you climb, you’ll come across 49 bells which form a large carillon.

It’s worth the effort though, because you’ll be treated to gorgeous views of the city once you finish your climb. Plus, you’ll get a nice workout while on your weekend in Porto.

Some say that São Bento Train Station is one of the most beautiful train stations in Europe. Opened in 1903, this station is unassuming from the outside.

But step inside, and you’ll discover an art gallery of azulejo tiles which were painted by Jorge Colaço, painter, caricaturist and potter. The inside of the station has over 20,000 of his painted tiles on its walls and ceilings that tell the history of Portugal

Rua das Flores is a street in Porto that was originally laid out in the early 16th century. By the 19th century, the street had become a shopping district where people could find expensive goods.

Today, it continues to be a great shopping area. It’s a mainly pedestrian street, lined with cute cafes like the Mercador Café (you can also get an amazing brunch here). You’ll also find plenty of restaurants and souvenir shops on Rua das Flores.

You can also pop into Museu da Misericórdia do Porto, a museum that is home to collections of 16th-century paintings, sculptures, and silverware. Next door to the museum is an ornate church, called the Igreja da Misericórdia.

Rua das Flores runs from São Bento Train Station at one end, until it connects with Rua de Belomonte.

The Igreja de Santo Ildefonso is one of my favourite churches in Porto. This Baroque style church dates back to the 18th century.

What makes the church special is that its front is decorated with over 11,000 blue and white azulejos, which were added in 1932 by Jorge Colaço. The tiles depict the life of Saint Ildefonso, as well as religious stories.

Inside Igreja de Santo Ildefonso you’ll find beautiful stained glass windows and a pipe organ that dates back to 1811.

Miradouro da Vitória is a scenic viewpoint that is above the Ribeira neighborhood. This is arguably one of the best spots to watch the sunset while spending a weekend in Porto.

From this spot, you have beautiful views of one of the oldest parts of the city, as well as the Douro River. You’ll spot cobblestone lanes, terracotta rooftops, and many of the city’s main attractions like the Porto Cathedral and Dom Luis Bridge. This viewpoint is very unassuming. It’s surrounded by a couple worn down buildings, and the stone ground is crumbling in some areas. Don’t be fooled by this, though! This was truly one of my favourite spots to watch the sun go down over Porto.

To reach this viewpoint, you’ll need to climb steep streets. Be sure to set out for Miradouro da Vitória well before sunset time so that you can take rests as you walk up, and still have plenty of time to see the view.

Fun tip! Just a 5 minute walk from this view point you’ll find Castro (Atelier de Pastéis de Nata). This is a traditional pastéis de nata shop. Besides tasting this delicious Portuguese pastry, at Castro, you’re able to see the pastry chefs actually making them! There’s a glass window that makes it possible to observe the process.

The Capela das Almas (also known as the Chapel of Souls or St. Catherine Chapel), is an 18th century church. It’s located right off Rua de Santa Catarina. Capela das Almas is arguably one of the most famous churches in Porto, thanks to the 15,000+ azulejos that cover the exterior of the church. The tiles depict the lives of notable saints.

Spend some time admiring the tiling on the outside of the church, before popping inside for a moment to appreciate the chapel. After visiting Capela das Almas, you can head over to Santa Catarina Boulevard, which is filled with shops and restaurants, or to Bolhao Market (more about the market below).

The Bolhão Market is a traditional market that sells fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, prepared foods, and nowadays, souvenirs.

Mercado do Bolhão dates back to 1839, when Porto’s town hall bought the land where the market now stands and defined the area as a market.

In 1914, a neoclassical building was built to house the market. When you visit Bolhão Market you can wander that building, which is divided into two floors, as well as various market areas.

There’s a part of the market dedicated to fish, butchers, florists, vegetable sellers, and more. On the ground floor of Bolhão Market you’ll find small restaurants where you can order a traditional meal for a reasonable price.

Bolsa Palace was built between 1842 and 1910. It originally operated as the Portuguese stock exchange. The glamorous interior of the building was meant to attract and impress wealthy investors. Today, Bolsa Palace is representative of the wealth that Portugal had in the 19th century. Visiting the building gives you a glimpse into Portugal’s political and economic past.

And, you’ll get to admire ornate rooms like the incredible  Salão Árabe (Arab room), and the Pátio das Nações (Hall of Nations, the original trading floor).

You can’t visit the Bolsa Palace without a guided tour, which is included with the admission price. Tours are run in four languages, throughout the day, and cost less than 20$.

You can book your ticket to tour Bolsa Palace online in advance . Then, go to Bolsa Palace and wait in a brief line to select your tour time and language. Once your name is down for a specific time, you’ll come back at the time for the 30 minute tour.

Half Rabbit is a giant art installation that is meant to critique society’s wastefulness. The massive sculpture of a rabbit was brought to life by Portuguese artist Bordallo II. The rabbit is made of recycled materials and trash collected from around the city, and it’s installed on the corner of a building in Vila Nova de Gaia.

Bordallo II is known for creating installations of animals throughout Portugal. This particular one is a call for ecological sustainability, and more social awareness.

The sculpture is positioned on the building so that the rabbit is seemingly folded in two. One half of the rabbit is bright and multi-coloured, while the other half is unpainted. This is why the installation is called “Half Rabbit.” Half Rabbit is spectacular to look at. You’ll notice metal pieces, old street signs, and plastic containers are just some of the materials that Bordallo II used to create the rabbit’s eyes, ears, and whiskers. And of course, it’s a stark reminder of the amount of waste our societies generate.

Half Rabbit is in Vila Nova de Gaia, so across the river from Porto’s Ribeira neighborhood. It’s easy to quickly visit this art installation when you’re exploring Vila Nova de Gaia. The sculpture is a quick walk from many of the neighborhood’s port wine cellars.

Fun tip! If it’s a hot day in Vila Nova de Gaia, you might be in the mood for icecream. A one minute walk away from Half Rabbit is Ze Badio, a cute little ice cream shop. It’s well worth a stop after admiring the art.

Day Trip From Porto: Douro Valley

The Douro Valley is a hilly region that surrounds the Douro River as it flows through northern Portugal. The region is famous for being the oldest demarcated wine-growing region on the planet.

Demarcated in 1756, the Douro is a UNESCO World Heritage Site because of how wine-making over the course of 2000 years has influenced its development.

Winemaking has shaped the area into a terraced, vine-covered destination that produces red, white, and port wines.

Responsible Travel Tips for Porto

Responsible travel is all about traveling in a way that supports the communities you’re visiting. Below are some tips for how to travel responsibly while spending a weekend in Porto.

Take some time to learn while spending a weekend in Porto. There are several great museums that will give you insight into Portuguese history, culture, traditions and more. Making your trip to Porto educational will definitely enrich your experience!

As with many European cities, Porto has experienced a surge in tourism in recent years which has led to harmful impacts like overtourism . One way to help reduce your impact while traveling any part of Portugal is to visit in the off or shoulder season. This season runs from late September to early May, and during those months there are typically less tourists around.

Porto is super walkable. Walking is a great way to reduce your carbon emissions while exploring the city. When you’ve had enough of a workout (those Porto hills catch up to you), consider using public transport to keep your emissions low, rather than taxis and car shares.

It’s tempting to stay in chain hotels and grab Starbucks in the morning, but it benefits local Portuguese in Porto more if you support independently owned hotels, locally owned apartment rentals, and shops.

This guide covers a weekend in Porto because I know many travelers have limited time that they can spend on vacation. If time allows, I recommend spending longer than a weekend in Porto. Spending more days allows for a slower travel approach, and you’re able to get to know Porto more in depth.

Can you do Porto in a weekend?

Yes, you can do Porto in a weekend because the city is very compact. Most main attractions are in the city center which makes Porto a perfect weekend destination. It’s possible to walk everywhere, and on a weekend, you’ll have enough time to get a taste of Porto’s culture, food, and more.

Which is better Porto or Lisbon?

Porto and Lisbon are both lovely cities to visit. Lisbon has some of Portugal’s most popular tourist attractions, museums, and sights, which makes it a quintessential Portuguese city to visit. Porto has lesser-known, but equally interesting attractions. In Porto, you can take a slower pace, exploring neighborhoods and taking in the views.

Is Porto worth visiting?

Yes, Porto is worth visiting. It’s a historic Portuguese city that rests on the beautiful Douro River. You can wander vibrant neighborhoods like Ribeira and Baixa on foot, visiting beautiful churches, interesting museums, and great restaurants. Take an evening cruise on the river, and taste locally made Port wines.

A weekend in Porto is definitely enough time to see the city’s main sites, like Dom Luis I Bridge and Livraria Lello, as well as wander neighborhoods like Ribeira and Baixa, and of course, taste Porto’s famous port wine.

If you have more time to spend than a weekend in Porto, you’ll be able to fit in even more of the Porto things to do that I covered in this guide.
