The Jungfrau region lies at the heart of Switzerland's Bernese Oberland , and is named after the highest peak.

Sightlines are dominated by the mighty triple crest of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau (Ogre, Monk and Virgin) – three peaks rising side by side to 4000m.

The Jungfrau is the focus, partly because it’s the highest (at 4158m), and partly because the network of mountain trains from Interlaken Ost culminates at the Jungfraujoch, a saddle below the peak that hosts the highest train station in Europe.

Don’t be ashamed of being a tourist in Interlaken — that’s what the place exists for. Interlaken is all many visitors ever see of Switzerland during their travels, never mind during a Jungfrau region vacation

The town is perfectly positioned as the gateway into the Oberland, linked into main train routes to and from Bern and Lucerne , with branch lines feeding out into the High Alps.

It’s a pleasant enough place, if commercial, and useful for its proximity to the mountains.

Where to stay in and around Interlaken

  • Best for couples: Hotel Restaurant Hirschen . An atmospheric old inn south of the centre that’s been in the same family for some 300 years.
  • Best for luxury: Victoria Jungfrau . One of the grandest hotels in the country, dating from 1864, with sensational views of the Jungfrau and a state-of-the-art spa.
  • Best for affordable comfort: Weisses Kreuz . This centrally-located affordable hotel offers cosy no-frills rooms.

It’s hard to overstate how stunning the Lauterbrunnen Valley is — an immense U-shaped cleft (the world’s deepest), with bluffs on either side rising sheer to a hight of 1000m.

Doused by some 72 waterfalls, it's utterly spectacular, and demonstrates why you voted Switzerland one of the most beautiful countries in the world . Visiting the falls is sure to be a highlight of your Jungfrau region vacation.

At the point where the valley opens up, road and railway enter the busy little village of Lauterbrunnen (796m). The train station here is the junction point for journeys up to Wengen and on up to the Jungfraujoch.

Where to stay in and around Lauterbrunnen

  • Best for central convenience: Hotel Steinbock. Located right beside the station, this hotel has cosy, uncomplicated rooms and cooking to match.
  • Best for lively atmosphere: Hotel Horner Pub . Situated just beyond the tourist office, this lively pub offers basic rooms, some with views of the Staubbach falls.
  • Best for budget travellers: Valley Hostel . Close to the train station, most rooms have balconies, and there's a women-only dorm.
  • Best for families: Camping Jungfrau . This large family-oriented campsite is open all year, with six-person bungalows and dorms in addition to tent space.

Discover more places to stay in Lauterbrunnen .

A gorgeous, car-free haven perched on a shelf of tranquil southwest-facing meadow, Wengen is one of Switzerland’s best-known ski resorts, famous for hosting World Cup downhill and slalom races on the Lauberhorn every January.

Once the snows have receded, Wengen sits amid ideal hiking country, overlooked by the Jungfrau and the distinctive cone of the Silberhorn.

To view the majesty of the Lauterbrunnen valley from Wengen, book a trip on a new cable car to Männlichen .

Meanwhile, tiered above the valley floor on a series of long terraces, Grindelwald is another hugely popular and pretty resort.

Unlike Wengen, Grindelwald is accessible by car and bus, and thus sees a great deal more tourist traffic than the Lauterbrunnen resorts.

More cable cars run from Grindelwald than from anywhere else in the Jungfrau region, giving access to lofty viewpoints and numerous short- and long-distance trails.

Where to stay in Wengen and Grindelwald

  • Best for cosy comfort: Hotel Bären, Wengen . A chalet hotel with a range of rooms (some with balconies) and terrace overlooking the valley.
  • Best for Art Nouveau elegance: Belvédère, Wengen . Housed in a beautiful 1912 Jugendstil mansion in a quiet location above the village, this retains its original character.
  • Best for adventurers: Berghotel Faulhorn, summit of Faulhorn, Grindelwald . This spectacularly situated mountain hut is only accessible to walkers. Reservation is mandatory.
  • Best for rustic charm: Hotel Gletschergarten, Grindelwald . A wonderful old window-box-laden pension. All rooms have balconies and there’s an open fireplace in the cosy lounge.

Some 5km south from Lauterbrunnen, just before the peaceful hamlet of Stechelberg, you'll find the huge base station for the cable-car ride up to Gimmelwald, Mürren and the Schilthorn.

To reach car-free Mürren, you have to switch cable cars at Gimmelwald. It's an awe-inspiring village set on an elevated shelf of pasture.

Though it has an illustrious history of winter sports, the village has retained a rustic, peaceful atmosphere.

Where to stay in Mürren

  • Best for families: Hotel Alpenruh . One of the most appealing little hotels in the whole region — cosy and friendly, with dreamy views.
  • Best for cetnral buzziness: Eiger Guesthouse . Modern, well-equipped guesthouse in a convenient location. Rooms are cosy and clean, though some have shared bathrooms.
  • Best for romantics: Hotel Regina . This Art Deco hotel on Mürren’s main street has magnificent dining room and a grandstand view of the Jungfrau peaks from the terrace.

The Höhematte and the Schlosskirche, Interlaken

The large grassy Höhematte was where the monks of Interlaken’s ancient Augustinian monastery pastured their cattle.

On the east side of the park some of the old monastic buildings have been incorporated into the eighteenth-century Schloss.

Unterseen, Interlaken

The atmospheric Unterseen district is Interlaken’s Old Town: the square fringed by Untere Gasse and Obere Gasse is particularly picturesque.

Here, at Obere Gasse 28, the Tourismuseum traces the history of tourism in Interlaken.

Harder Kulm Funicular

The Harder Kulm (1310m) offers vistas over the town of Interlaken and a panorama of snowy peaks close enough to touch.

Saturday afternoons sees folk music and dancing at the summit restaurant.

Jungfraujoch

Switzerland’s most popular (and pricey) mountain railway excursion is touted under the shoutline “Top of Europe”. And this really does justify the hype.

From Kleine Scheidegg trains tunnel clean through the Eiger to emerge at the Jungfraujoch, an icy, windswept col at 3454m, just below the Jungfrau summit. This is the highest train station in Europe, and offers an unforgettable experience of the mountains.

Beat the crowds by booking your train trip to Jungfraujoch in advance . And, if you're into stunning train journeys, read up on the best scenic train rides in Europe . Unsurprisingly, Switzerland gets a few mentions.

Schynige Platte

Zipping up to the awe-inspiring 2000m Schynige Platte on a rack-and-pinion railway is the best short trip from Interlaken, and one of the finest mountain excursions in the country.

On arrival, you're greeted by perfect views of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. Meanwhile, the Botanischer Alpengarten close to the summit is one of the few places you're sure to see a genuine living edelweiss.

To beat the crowds, pre-book a trip to the Schynige Platte .

Staubbach falls, Lauterbrunnen

At nearly 300m, the Staubbach falls are the highest in Switzerland, and gush over a sheer cliff like a lacy decoration on the rugged precipice.

To get an up-close view, head south from the station to reach a walkway that leads to a narrow ledge right behind the curtain of water.

Touring the Alpine passes

The configuration of roads over the High Alps means it’s straightforward to put together a looping, day-long driving tour of the highest roads in Europe, bringing spectacular scenery from every angle.

From Interlaken, lakeside roads run to Brienz and on to Meiringen, just beyond which you'll find a split of mountain routes. To the east lies the Susten Pass, while south is the stunning climb to the Grimsel Pass.

You could also head down the valley of the young Rhône and branch off near Oberwald to the Nufenen Pass. Continue with a scenic drive to Airolo, up over the Gotthard Pass to the Alpine hub town of Andermatt.

Alternatively, from Gletsch another hairpin route leads steeply up on a breathtaking drive over the Furka Pass and on down to Andermatt. From Andermatt, continue north through the Reuss gorges to Wassen, where a road climbs west up over the Susten Pass and back to Meiringen.

It makes sense to do these journeys by buying a pass from the tourist office at Interlaken – round trips that cover either three Alpine passes or four (Grimsel, Nufenen, Gotthard and Susten).

This is not a tour as such – you’re on regular public transport all the way – but purchasing a pass means you don’t have the hassle of buying separate tickets for each part of the journey.

Grütschalp and the Mürren railway

At the entrance to Lauterbrunnen village, a gondola run by BLM (“Mürrenbahn”) crests the west wall of the valley to Grütschalp.

From here a train trundles its way along the cliff edge, in full view of the snowy giants across the way, to Mürren. This really is one of the most scenic rides in Switzerland.

Active types might want to consider walking the steep path up to Grütschalp (2hr walking time) to take advantage of the panoramic stroll alongside the tracks to Mürren.

Winter sports in the Jungfrau region

In winter, resorts like Wengen, Mürren and Grindelwald offer some of the finest skiing and snowboarding in the Alps.

Beginners are best served at Wengen and Grindelwald, both of which have nursery slopes and plenty of blue runs close to the village centres.

The best location for snowboarding is the Snowpark at Bärgelegg (2501m), where there’s an array of rails, bank jumps, waves and kickers.

Adventure sports and hiking around Interlaken

Loads of companies in and around Interlaken run all kinds of adventure sports, many of them year-round. A popular choice is tandem paragliding, with tandem hang-gliding not far behind.

Bungee jumping is also hugely popular, and plenty of operators offer canyoning, too. There’s also rafting on the Lütschine, the Simme, the Saane and elsewhere, rock-climbing and horse-trekking.

Gunten on the Thunersee is a centre for windsurfing, waterskiing and wakeboarding, and there are lots of options for mountain biking solo.

For something gentler, Spiez-based Alpavia offer a number of long-distance hikes and bike trails through the region.

Walks and activities around Mürren

Some of the best trails around Mürren can be accessed via the Allmendhubel funicular , which runs from a base station midway between the Schilthorn cable-car station and the Mürrenbahn BLM train station.

From Mürren itself, it takes 75min to walk down to Lauterbrunnen along a relatively easy path that initially runs alongside the rail tracks.

For something a bit more daring, try the Klettersteig Via Ferrata — a 2.2km trail across steep limestone cliffs navigated by use of ladders and zipwires.

The Jungfrau Region near Interlaken is one the most popular destinations in Switzerland. It’s home to the famous Eiger peak, beautiful glaciers, plentiful panoramas, gorgeous hiking, and many family friendly activities. It’s a great place to stay for several days and also close enough to Zürich, Luzern and Bern for a day trip.

We’ve spent many days hiking there since we first moved here in 2005, visiting in different seasons and with our kids at every age. We know it can be hard to decide where to go and what to do. So here are some tips for planning your trip and favorite hikes and activities for families in this region.

Overview of Jungfrau Region

1. männlichen panorama trail, 2. grindelwald first to bachalpsee alpine lake, 3. schynige platte ridge trail, 4. eiger trail, 5. lauterbrunnen valley path, allmendhubel flower park, grindelwald bort alpine playground, männlichen alpine playground, summer toboggan, mountain scooters, jungfraujoch, grindelwald first cliff walk, männlichen , harder kulm, staubbach falls, trummelbach falls, grindelwald gorge, st. beatus caves, thun village & castle, indoor swimming, how to get to the jungfrau region, where to stay in the jungfrau region, how to travel around the jungfrau region.

The Jungfrau Region is a mountainous area just south of Interlaken, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Switzerland.

jungfrau region travel map

The Jungfrau Region is shaped like a “Y.” The town of Interlaken is at the entrance to the region and is the main transportation hub. From Interlaken, the region splits into two main valleys, the Grindelwald side on the east and the Lauterbrunnen side on the west.

The region can be roughly grouped into six mountain areas, as shown in the map below. Each area is serviced by cable car and mountain railways that enable you to reach mountain viewpoints and hikes without much effort.

Hikes for Families

Below are five of our very favorite hikes in the Jungfrau Region. These hikes are suitable for casual hikers, best with sturdy shoes but don’t require special skills or equipment. All are included in the Jungfrau Travel Pass and discounted with the Swiss Travel Pass.

For more hiking options, particularly for younger children, see Best Jungfrau Region Hikes for Kids .

If you can only do one hike in the Jungfrau region, this would be our top choice for families. To reach the trail, you can ride a cable car either from Wengen or Grindelwald Terminal. At the top, you’ll find a gorgeous viewpoint, restaurants and a fun playground with swings, slides, trampolines and other amusements.

You can start with an optional detour on the short Royal Walk to a higher viewpoint. Then traverse the mountain on panorama trail to Kleine Scheidegg, where you can catch a cogwheel train back down the mountain. This trail is easy enough for children 5+ and possible with an all-terrain stroller, if a bit bumpy at times.

See details for  Männlichen-Kleine Scheidegg trail .

Another popular choice is the lovely Bachalpsee lake, nestled between tall mountain peaks. You start by riding a gondola from Grindelwald up to First at 2167m. Before the hike, you can do a short 15 mins loop on the slightly scary “cliff walk” on a metal walkway built into the side of the mountain.

To reach the lake, follow the wide dirt service road up into the mountains. The out-and-back path is mostly obstacle free and possible with stroller, if you don’t mind carrying over a couple lumpy bits. It’s not a difficult hike but the uphill portions can feel a bit steep, making you feel out of breath.

At the lake, there is lots of room to spread out, take gorgeous pictures and settle in for a picnic with a view. Return the way you came on the same trail, thankfully all downhill. Back at the gondola station, older children can ride a super long zip line and ride mountain go-carts down the mountain (extra fee). On your gondola ride back down the mountain, you can stop at the Bort middle station to finish the day at a big playground with a view.

This gorgeous ridge trail is our very favorite in the region. The views are very dramatic, with cliffs dropping down to the super blue lake on one side and views across the whole Jungfrau region on the other.

To reach the trail, you ride a slow cogwheel train up the mountain to a restaurant and small playground. The trail starts with a steep climb up to the ridge, but then is relatively mild, if rocky, wander along the cliffs on a dirt path set behind fences. In July, the alpine meadows are bright green and bursting with wildflowers.

This popular trail traverses underneath the famous north face of the Eiger, where many climbers have died trying to reach the peak (64 since 1935). Unlike the rock face, this trail is safe for casual hikers, mostly relatively easy downhill walking, ending with some steep, rocky switchbacks that are bit more challenging.

To reach the hike, you ride the Eiger Express cable car up from Grindelwald. At the end of this one-way trail, you can ride a cogwheel train back down to the village. The whole trail has fantastic views across the Grindelwald valley with many mountain peaks in view.

Hike stats: moderate • 6 km • about 3 hours with kids • 787 m down

The easiest (and free) trail is through the beautiful Lauterbrunnen valley, with 72 waterfalls spilling from the cliffs on both sides and big mountain peaks all around. Starting at the Lauterbrunnen train station, it’s a short stroll to the edge of town where you can visit the impressive Staubbach falls and even walk in a cave behind the roaring water.

Then follow the quiet private road up the valley, with lush alpine meadows and tall cliff walls on both sides. You can also bike this trail, renting equipment back in the village.

You can walk as far as you like and return by bus at various points along the trail. We like to walk to the Trümmelbach falls (about 1 hour) and visit that tourist attraction before returning by bus.

Hike: Easy • 1 to 2 hours • 3 to 6.5 km • slightly uphill

This huge playground near Mürren is one of the best ways to enjoy the Jungfrau region with kids. You can relax at the adjacent restaurant and enjoy spectacular views of the famous Jungfrau, Eiger, and Mönch peaks while the kids entertain themselves on all the amusements.

If you want a bigger experience, there are lots of hiking trails that connect here, like the  Mürren Mountain View Trail . You could also visit the  Schilthorn  above Mürren first, then come back here for play time.

From the Grindelwald First gondola, you can stop at the Bort middle station to enjoy this great playground. It has lots of climbing structures, swings, slide, mini trampoline, water play, etc. There is a restaurant nearby.

We usually visit this after visiting the First Cliff Walk and hiking to the Bachalpsee further up the mountain. From the Bort station, you can also rent kick scooters to ride down the rest of the mountain.

You can reach this playground with a cable car from either Grindelwald Terminal or Wengen. Children can climb into this large wooden cow and slide out its mouth. Kids will also enjoy trampolines, swings, and other amusements here, while parents soak in the view.

We typically visit this playground while doing the Männlichen Royal Walk and panorama hike to Kleine Scheidegg .

The Jungfrau Region has one summer toboggan ride at Pfingstegg. Near Grindelwald, you ride a cable car up the mountain to a lovely viewpoint and restaurant. The summer toboggan starts here and is about 725 m long. A pulley system pulls you back up the mountain so you can optionally ride it again.

jungfrau region travel map

We would typically combine this with a hike down from Pfingstegg and a visit to the nearby Grindelwald Glacier Gorge . There is a also short alpine coaster at Heimwehfluh near Interlaken, with a car on a fixed rails.

The only mountain scooters in the Jungfrau Region are at Grindelwald First. From the very top of the First gondola, you can ride three-wheel mountain go-carts down to the Bort middle station. From this middle station, you can ride standing kick scooters back down to the Grindelwald village.

We would combine this with visit to the Grindelwald First Cliff Walk and possibly a hike to the Bachalpsee . They also have epic zip line ridges at the top. Learn more about the Grindelwald First amusements .

Scenic Viewpoints without Hiking

These mountain viewpoints are the most popular tourist attractions in this area and also the most expensive. Make sure the skies are clear on the webcams before paying the big bucks to ride up. They are only partially covered by the Jungfrau travel pass and other discount cards.

This glacier viewpoint is one of the most popular tourist excursions in Switzerland. From Grindelwald, you ride the Eiger Express cable car up the mountain. Then transfer to a cogwheel train that runs through a tunnel up to the highest railway station in Europe at 3,454m.

The visitor center includes indoor and outdoor platforms where you can view the famous peaks and Aletsch glacier, the longest in the alps at 20 km. You can also explore the Ice Palace, a series of tunnels and cave carved into the glacier ice. They have a nice multimedia tour of the history of this area, restaurants, and gift shops. In summer, you can sled on the glacier and hike across the glacier to a mountain hut.

This is an expensive outing at over CHF 200 per person (price varies by season). But you get a discount with the various travel cards and passes including the Swiss Travel Pass, Jungfrau Travel Pass, Berner Oberland Region Pass, GA and SBB Half-fare card.

From the Lauterbrunnen valley, ride a series of cable cars to the Schilthorn Piz Gloria observation deck at 2970m. From here, you can admire the three famous peaks: Jungfrau, Eiger, Monch as well as a 360 panoramic view of the entire region. There is a short 007 walk at the top with information about James Bond, since scenes from one of the movies was filmed here.

Ride one station down to do the “Birg Cliff Walk” with a fun metal walkway built into the side of the cliff wall.

From Grindelwald, you can ride a gondola to First at 2167m, where you can enjoy spectacular mountain views without a long hike. Behind the gondola station, there is a slightly scary “cliff walk” on a metal walkway built into the side of the mountain, about a 15 min loop. It includes a short suspension bridge and the see-through walkway shown here, with views of the Eiger.

The walkway has high railings and is safe and easy to walk, even with small children. If anyone in your group has a fear of heights, they can instead enjoy the views at the restaurant where the cliff walk ends.

From either Grindelwald or Wengen, you can ride a cable car up to Männlichen, a high mountain viewpoint overlooking both the Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen valleys. A short stroll from the cable car station, there is a safe fenced viewing platform over the cliffs to get the view shown here.

There are restaurants and a playground here, so you can spend more time with the view. We also suggest a short hike on the Royal Walk to a higher vantage over the entire Jungfrau Region. If you want to hike more, a few trails continue from here including the panorama trail to Kleine Scheidegg described above.

Waterfalls & Gorges

These impressive natural beauties are a treat in any weather. But on hot days, it’s also nice to take a break from hiking and cool off near water.

The Staubbach Falls are very close to the Lauterbrunnen village, one of most famous of the 72 waterfalls in this valley. These falls are easy and free to visit, just a short walk from the train station or parking, no gondola or long hike required. You can optionally hike up a short dirt path to a closer viewpoint, then through a tunnel to a lookout behind the water.

Details for Staubbach Falls

jungfrau region travel map

Just a short bus ride from Lauterbrunnnen, you’ll find the entrance to the Trummelbach Falls, a narrow canyon carved by water melting from the Eiger, Jungfrau and Monch. A startling amount of water flows through here, up to 20,000 liters/second.

You pay a fee then ride an elevator up through the rock wall. Then you can explore the gorge on paved path, up and down lots of stairs to different viewpoints. There are railings and fences on all paths and viewpoints for safety. But everything is wet with the spray from the waterfalls, so it can be tricky to walk and smaller children will need assistance.

Note that children under 4 (even in baby carriers) are not allowed at this attraction due to safety concerns.

Cost: CHF 14/adult, CHF 6/child, under 4 not allowed

Trümmelbach Waterfalls through gorge in Lauterbrunnen Switzerland

The Gletscherschlucht near Grindelwald is a narrow glacier ravine a small river running through it with 300m tall rock walls on each side. For a fee, you can walk on an elevated walkway about 870 m down the canyon.

jungfrau region travel map

Inside the gorge, there is a huge 170m² “spiderweb” net stretched across the gorge where you can jump around. For an extra fee, you can do the crazy “canyon swing” where you jump from 90m above the canyon and swing up to 120km/h through the canyon.

The gorge is a good choice for a cloudy day or little rain. It’s also a nice break from the heat and sun if you need it.

Here are few more waterfalls and gorges just a short drive outside the Jungfrau region, but not covered by the Jungfrau travel pass.

  • Giessbach Falls

Rainy Day in the Jungfrau Region

This large cave system is a popular attraction near Interlaken, where according to legend, St. Beatus , the first apostle to Switzerland, fought a dragon.

For an entrance fee, you can wander through about 1 km of the caves on well-lit walkways, enjoying geological formations, including stalactites and stalagmites, as well as an underground river rushing through the caves. Outside the caves, there is a casual family-friendly restaurant and dragon-themed playground with a picnic area, a nice place for kids to run around.

The caves are open year round. After heavy rain, they may close temporarily for safety reasons.

Location: 15 mins north of Interlaken – cave entrance on map

If clouds are obscuring the peaks but it’s not raining too hard, it’s nice to wander around a charming town and Thun is one of the nicest near Interlaken. See details here .

jungfrau region travel map

In Grindelwald, the Sportszentrum Grindelwald has an indoor pool and other amusements. For a big water park, the closest is Bernaqua , about an hour drive from Interlaken.

Near Interlaken, you can visit the Trauffer visitor center, where they make the classic wooden cow and other toy figurines you’ll see all over Switzerland. Otherwise, best to head to Bern, which is full of lots of interesting and fun museums in Bern . One we particularly liked with kids was Zentrum Paul Klee .

The Jungfrau Region is a mountain area near Interlaken, about an hour drive south of Bern.

By car:  Drive to Interlaken, then into either the Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen valley.

By public transport:  Take a train to Interlaken, then switch trains to either Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen, depending in which are you want to hike.

By plane:  If you are flying into to Switzerland, Bern is the closest to the Jungfrau region, 1hr35 by train. But it’s only 2hr40 from Basel or Zurich. Just pick the best flight in terms of price and convenience.

The most convenient areas to stay are Interlaken, Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen. Each of these areas has many services: stores, restaurants, and hotels. They are also well connected by public transportation and make it easy to reach the different parts of this region or travel outside the region.

Many people stay in Interlaken because it is very convenient (close to public transportation) and there are lots of hotels and tourist services in this city. However, it’s packed with tourists and not particularly charming. We haven’t particularly liked the places we’ve stayed in Interlaken, so I won’t recommend them here. If you do stay here, make sure to stay within a very short walk of either Interlaken train station since some buses in this area don’t run very frequently.

I prefer to stay in Lauterbrunnen because it is close to many of the hikes I want to do, meaning my travel time at the beginning and end of my day is reduced. This is particularly important when traveling with children who have limited patience. We enjoyed our stay at Hotel Oberland many years ago. For budget travel, we’ve also stayed at Camping Jungfrau , which has shared bunk rooms as well as private bungalows.

I also like Wilderswil because it’s also conveniently located to all the public transportation connections, but much smaller and more charming than Interlaken.

jungfrau region travel map

It can be fun to stay in one of the mountain villages, like Gimmelwald, Murren or Wengen, especially if you rent an apartment in an old traditional Swiss home with lots of character. Although the towns are “car free,” they offer luggage services to get your stuff from the cable car to your hotel. Each of these towns have small grocery stores and restaurants, so you’re not completely isolated. But they are quieter, especially in the mornings and evenings when most tourists have left.

However, it can be time consuming, expensive, and slightly annoying to have to ride down a cable car each time you want to visit a different mountain than the one you are already on. With kids, we sometimes pick convenience over charm.

Of course, there are many hotels in all these areas. But if you are staying for 3 days or more, I recommend renting an apartment, as it is much cheaper than a hotel and more comfortable with kids.

The Jungfrau region is well connected with public transportation, so you don’t need a car. However, train travel and mountain railways are very expensive in Switzerland. So consider buying one of the travel passes or cards listed below, which includes “free” travel on public rail, bus and water routes and discounts on mountain transit, like cable cars and funicular trains.

SBB Junior Card  – entitles kids aged 6 to 15 free travel on all public transport and most mountain railways, when traveling with a parent with a valid ticket. As of 2019, it costs 30 CHF per year. Children 5 and under travel free on public transportation, including most mountain transport.

Jungfrau Travel Pass  – includes travel on almost public transport from Interlaken into the Jungfrau Region and almost all mountain transport in the region, from Interlaken. This is the most affordable way for tourists to see this region. The pass is available for 3 to 8 days. In 2019, a 3 day pass costs CHF 190. To visit the Jungfraujoch, it’s an extra CHF 74 (or CHF 61 in low season).

jungfrau region travel map

Swiss Travel Pass – includes travel on all public transport throughout Switzerland and 50% on most mountain transport in the Jungfrau region, 25% on the Jungfraujoch train. Available for 3 or more days.

SBB Half-fare Card – if you live in Switzerland, it makes sense to get this card gives you 50% travel on all public transport and most mountain transport

Hi! We are visiting this summer and staying in Grindelwald for 5 days. We plan on: 1. Grindelwald – First 2. Gelberbahn + hike around like 3. Lauterbrunnen valley + Trummelbach Falls 4. Männlichen Panorama Trail to Kleine Scheidegg (with map) We are a family 3 (2 adults + 1 child). As we are already in Grindelwald, does it make sense / worth it to purchase the Jungfrau Travel Pass? We do not plan on Top of Europe.

From the activities you describe, the Jungfrau Travel Pass might not be your best option. It does not cover the Gelmerbahn. And you don’t need it for the Lauterbrunnen valley. So you would only need it for 2 days. If your child is under 6, they are free. Otherwise you can purchase a Junior Card at the train station for CHF 30 and they can ride free with you.

Hi! Are any of these open in November? It looks like maybe Junfrau is the only one open during that time. Thanks!

November is tricky because it will probably have some snow, but not yet maintained by the resort as a winter trail. The Gornergrat to Riffelberg trail is a winter trail from Dec – April, but I wouldn’t recommend these trails in November unless the Zermatt website says it’s open.

Hi! Thanks for creating such informative posts. So happy to come across your blog!

Quick question as we’re heading over to this region for a full week in August. I have a half-fare travelcard and was wondering if it’s still worth it to get the Jungfrau Pass. We will roughly be doing hikes and activities for 5 days (similar to the itinerary you posted).

Thanks in advance and hope you’re having a lovely summer!

Sorry for the very late reply! You’ve probably already gone and come back. I don’t think it’s worth it if you already have a half-fare card.

We’re a family of 3 from USA and will be traveling in Switzerland on the 2nd week of July this year. Your site has helped me a lot in planning our itineraries, Thanks a lot! ❤️ And also if I may ask a question. While browsing online earlier in the Jungfrao site, we come across the Trift Bridge. Do you think our 8 year old will make it to the bridge. And do you have any guides or suggestions on how to get there? We will be staying in Lauterbrunnen. Any help will highly be appreciated. Thank you so much

Here’s hoping you still read & respond to the comments on your blog. I love your blog so much, and I’ve been pouring over it lately in advance of our family’s European trip this summer. We will be staying for 4 days in Wengen in July, and I would love to tack on a hike to a one night stay at a mountain hut. You seem to be the only person online who knows about which hikes/huts would be good for families with kids, so I wanted to ask your advice. My son will be almost 9 and he is quite athletic and a solid hiker, but we’re still not looking for anything too crazy. Any suggestions for the Lauterbrunnen area? Thanks so much! This blog is a life-saver for my planning.

Thanks so much! I’m so glad I could help out. I’m going to think on your mountain hut question and get back to you. Feel free to email me at [email protected] to follow up.

Hi Ashley. I'm glad the site was helpful. In general, you don't need to book the Jungfrau train far in advance. It can definitely fill up, but I think it's better to wait to see if it's actually clear at the top before you go up. That's an expensive trip if you are stuck in the clouds. I'd probably get up early and check the webcams and weather report, then get a ticket for whatever next train has tickets available. The train goes up every half hour from about 8am to 4pm, so there should be tickets available at some point no matter how crowded it is.

You can get a Swiss Half Fare card for one month (110sfr instead of 150sfr for the yearly card). http://www.swisstravelsystem.com/produkttexte.php?passid=6

This means you get half fare on all public transport (bus, boat, gondola, train) in Switzerland and kids 6-15 go free when they are with you if you buy a family card (40sfr/child for the year, maybe a shorter version available), kids under 6 always free. You just have to calculate how much public transportation you plan to take during your stay. It could easily pay for itself during a long weekend if you went up Jungfrau and another mountain and rode a ferry, etc.

Some trains/gondolas/etc are private, which wouldn't be covered by the half-fare card. I read somewhere that some of the trains and gondolas in the Lauterbrunnen area are private, so you should check that out and factor that in.

But there are several other options you should look into including the Jungfrau Railway Pass, which includes 6 consecutive days of travel on all modes of transportation in the Jungfrau area for about 200sfr. Depending on what your plans are and how long you are staying, this might be a better deal. I quickly googled Jungfrau Railway Pass and there are lots of sites with reviews relating experiences with this pass. You can also look on http://www.swisspasses.com which has a variety of pass options.

In short, if you are planning to travel all over Switzerland, the half-fare card would be the best value. If you are staying in the Lauterbrunnen area, the Jungfrau Railway Pass is probably a better fit. If you are only going up the Jungfrau and then going home, you probably don't need a special pass.

Also, check http://www.sbb.ch for specials on various swiss destinations.

Whatever you do, have a great time in Switzerland!

Hi! We are living in the Netherlands with 3 young kids and will be traveling to Switzerland in 2 weeks- we are staying in Lauterbrunnen and my husband came upon your blog- which is great!- so thanks for all the information! A couple of questions- how do you get the Swiss 1/2 fare card, and is it still worth it for this one trip if we don't live in Switz and may not be returning? And do you have to book the Jungfrau train in advance? If you are able to help me with these questions, thanks!!

Hi- We went back to the Berner Oberland since we loved it so much and the in-laws were visiting. This time we stayed in Wengen. I personally liked Murren better, since it feels like it is literally on the edge of the mountain and is smaller. We had a great dinner, though in Wengen at Zum Baren. The restaurant is in the Zum Baren hotel which is an inexpensive, popular hotel that we tried to stay in but was booked. They had lots of wild game on the menu (which I don’t care for), but everything was really good!

Yay, Inga, thanks for leaving a comment! Tanya, make sure this post is included in the index as well as the original Berner Oberland post.

Just went last weekend and LOVED this trip! I can’t recommend this trip enough! At the advice of Tanya, we stayed in Murren for 2 nights and were so happy that we did. The town gets a lot of dayhikers, but at night it empties out and is so nice and quiet with amazing views. We did a number of hikes around Murren (children’s adventure trail, flower trail, blumental-panorama trail) which were all really kid-friendly: we came across cows, sheep, streams to throw rocks in, etc. Our toddler was completely happy in our backpack or walking himself. Most hikes could be done in an hour or combined for a longer hike. We stayed at the Hotel Alpenblick – not bad, but nothing special. On the way home, we stopped at Trummelbach falls (just 2 minute drive from the gondola that takes you up to Murren). This waterfall drains the glaciers of Jungfrau, Monch and Eiger and is inside a mountain. It is impressive, but definitely NOT kid-friendly. The tunnels and stairs that lead to the cascades are dark, wet and really loud from the roar of the falls. Our toddler (in backpack, strollers not possible) did not like it! Even with older kids, the wet, dark stairs would make me nervous.

Tanya, I just noticed your new index on the right, with all the posts categorized by type. Wonderful! Just what we needed! This is a great blog!

Thanks Tanya, this is fabulous! I can’t wait to schedule a trip there myself!

1. Jungfraujoch

Jungfraujoch is one of the most visited attractions in Switzerland . No wonder it’s one of the most impressive things to do in the region.

It’s a meteorological station , 3463 meters above sea level. It also hosts the highest train station in Europe , so you’ll often see the name ‘ Top of Europe .’ When you reach the top, you can do a visitor circle that’ll take you to the main parts of the station, which include:

  • Jungfrau cinema with 360° panorama
  • Sphinx Observatory – terrace with views of the Aletsch Glacier
  • Alpine Sensation
  • Glacier Plateau
  • Lindt Chocolate Shop
  • Snow Fun Park

At first, you’ll learn about the activity of the meteorological center and how they measure weather and precipitation. After, you can get up to the Sphinx Observatory and admire the largest glacier in the Alps, the Aletsch Glacier (23 kilometers long).

Walking through the Alpine Sensation , you’ll learn about the construction of Jungfraujoch and, eventually, walk through the impressive ice cave . Then, take a photo with the Swiss flag at the Glacier Plateau .

Plan at least half a day for your visit to Jungfraujoch.

PRO TIP: Take the first train from Eigergletscher in the morning. This way, you’ll get there before all other tourists arrive and will get to enjoy it to the fullest . That’s what I did every time I visited Jungfraujoch, and it was always the best experience .

2. Grindelwald First -Adventure Activities

Grindelwald First offers you the best activities in the Jungfrau region. First, walk on the spectacular  cliff walk  and take a photo of the Jungfrau region from a  glass viewing point .

Then, do the  4 adventure activities :

  • First Flyer
  • First Glider
  • Mountain Cart
  • Trotti Bike

From Grindelwald First,  fly above the Swiss green hills  and enjoy the breathtaking glacier views on the  First Flyer . It’ll take you to the Schreckhorn station.

From the Schreckhorn station, fly back to the First Mountain on the  First Glider  and feel like a real bird.

Return to the  Schreckhorn station  and take a  mountain cart . Drive through the mountain roads down to  Bort station . Then, change to the  Trotti bike  and enjoy the thrilling ride between the Swiss wooden huts to Grindelwald.

Adventure Activities On Grindelwald First is something you  should add to your itinerary . There is no other place in Europe where you can do this, so don’t miss it.

3. Schilthorn & Birg Thrill Walk

Schilthorn is my favorite mountain excursion in the Jungfrau region. It’s accessible from the Lauterbrunnen Valley and Mürren.

The main attraction is its highest rotating restaurant in Europe and the James Bond exhibition , as the movie ”On Her Majesty’s Secret Service” was shot here.

But honestly, the stunning mountain views are what you come to Schilthorn for.

Initially, you’ll take 3 cable cars from Stechelberg station (Lauterbrunnen Valley) to Birg . Then, get out of the station in Birg and take some time to admire the panorama of 3 famous mountains: Eiger , Mönch , and Jungfrau . Do you dare to do the thrill walk on the edge of the rocks? I think you should go for it. It’s an adventure of a lifetime.

From Birg , take the last cable car to Schilthorn . Enjoy the views, try to spot Mt. Blanc, see the James Bond exhibition, and eat something delicious in the rotating restaurant.

4. Mürren Town

Mürren is a beloved car-free town situated on the mountain. Getting here is a must to do things in the Jungfrau region. This place’s silence , stunning nature , and breathtaking views are unforgettable.

How To Get To Mürren: You can reach it by taking the cable car from Lauterbrunnen to Grütschalp , and from there, take a train to Mürren. Or take a cable car from Stechelberg (Lauterbrunnen Valley) to Gimmelwald and the connecting cable car to Mürren.

Alternatively, you can walk from Gimmelwald , enjoy Swiss beauty, and meet locals.

5. Via Ferrata

Jungfrau region has something for everyone. Even the most experienced hikers and adventurous souls come here for the incredible Via Ferrata.

It’s  a 2.2-kilometer  (1.4-mile) long hike  from Mürren to Gimmelwald . The most interesting part is the  bridge hanging in between two rock cliffs . So test your courage and come for the Via Ferrata. It takes about  3 hours  to complete.

6. Lauterbrunnen Valley & Trummelbach Waterfalls

Many people say that the Lauterbrunnen Valley is the most beautiful in Switzerland. And I must admit, after living for 1 year in the Jungfrau region. Lauterbrunnen Valley, with its stunning  72 waterfalls , is incredible. Some  waterfalls fall off the rock cliffs  and disappear in the middle, which creates a  special atmosphere .

After you spend some time in Lauterbrunnen, having coffee and drinks, head to the  Trummelbach Waterfalls . You can do a  self-guided tour  to see 10 waterfalls inside the rocks. It’s worth seeing, just come in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid tourist crowds.

How To Get To Trummelbach Waterfalls:  Take the  bus n. 141  (direction Stechelberg) from Lauterbrunnen and get off at the Trummelbach Falls station.

7. Schynnige Platte

Schynnige Platte is hands-down  my second favorite excursion  in the Jungfrau region. But, unfortunately,  many people skip it , which I don’t know why. So please,  avoid this mistake  and get to Schynnige Platte.

You’ll take a  train from Wilderswil  and enjoy a  spectacular ride  with lake views. After, the entire Jungfrau region, with its snowy mountain, spreads out in front of you. The train ride takes  1 hour .

Once you reach  Schynnige Platte , admire the  Alpine Garden  and walk to the  Oberberghorn viewing point  for the best views of Lake Brienz & Lake Thun and Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau Mountain.

Have some delicious  Swiss food  in the restaurant before heading back to reality.

8. Hike To Faulhorn & Stay Overnight

Hiking to Faulhorn is a less popular thing to do in the Jungfrau region. However, many hikers still do it. I  did it for my birthday , and let me tell you – it was the best birthday of my life (not joking).

The hike  takes about 2 hours . First, you’ll pass by the stunning  Bachalp Lake  and continue up to the Faulhorn hut.

Faulhorn Hut  also  offers accommodation  so that you can stay overnight. You can make it partially if you want to do the next hike. On the  first day ,  hike up to Faulhorn , stay overnight, and on the  second day , hike to  Schynnige Platte .

Faulhorn hut is a  typical Swiss mountain hut ; you’ll love the atmosphere. Have some food, sip local Swiss tea, and enjoy the views of Lake Brienz and the entire Jungfrau region.

PRO TIP:  If you stay overnight, book the common room where many people can sleep. It’s the only warm place in the hut. The double rooms have no heating and are very cold at night.

9. Hike From Grindelwald First Via Faulhorn To Schynnige Platte

For all hikers out there, I have the most beautiful hike in the Jungfrau region for you. While it’s not for those who prefer light hikes, it’s worth doing.

The hike from Grindelwald First via Faulhorn to Schynnige Platte takes about 6 hours . You’ll start in Grindelwald First and walk to Faulhorn for about 2 hours. Hike alongside Bachalpsee before you start ascending. Enjoy the stunning views of Bachalpsee before you reach Faulhorn hut . Then, rest, have a snack or lunch, and continue.

The hike from Faulhorn to Schynnige Platte is the most beautiful I have done in the Jungfrau region. The scenery constantly changes , and every corner offers different views of the region.

Don’t be put off by the time. It’s not even as long as it seems.

Jungfrau region Map

Last Updated on 14/05/2023

In this post you find the Jungfrau region map with Brienz and Thun lakes and the valleys on the right and left of the Jungfrau, but without going over to the southern side of the mountains.

To be able to more clearly see the names, the map is further split into pieces. More detailed maps are also available in separate topics.

Jungfrau region map

Everything important that you can see in the Jungfrau region – with notes and links.

  • 2 – very good, although not so well known
  • 3 – good for a short vacation or a layover. Several medium-level interesting places
  • 4 – local or specific, not for everyone

Marks without brackets – I was there. With brackets – I wasn’t there. Of course, the notes are subjective.

1 1. Lauterbrunnen

The Valley of Waterfalls: one near Lauterbrunnen, you can approach from below, one inside the cliff – with a paid visit, several along the steep walls of the gorge – for admiring and one at the end of the gorge for those who have time for hiking. This is accompanied by an ascent by cable cars to Mürren and further to Schilthorn (Bond, of course, actively advertised), by train to Wengen and further to Jungfrau or by cable car to Männlichen.

Great views – for those who are ready to go for a walk on the rocks, good views – for those with limited mobility. And a very nice alpine botanical garden.

About Interlaken and Schynige Platte

3 4. Interlaken

A city between two lakes, as the name clearly hints at. Good for a base for those who want to visit not only the Jungfrau, but also around. The city itself is interesting for the blue Aare stream and the funicular to Harder Kulm (view of the two lakes and the Jungfrau). There is another funicular to the small hill Heimwehfluh (coaster, rodelbahn, model railroad, rope park).

2 5. Waterfall Giessbach, Axalp

The most interesting point on Lake Breinz is the Giessbach waterfall. You can climb to the waterfall not only on foot, but also using the funicular. Above – walking trails around Axalp.

A specialty of Brienz: it is the city of woodcarvers. Accordingly, there is a museum of carvers. Also, Wildpark, a steam train to Mount Rothorn.

1 7. Ballenberg

An open-air museum of this level for me has a score of 1. For someone not interested in history, it will be 4, many will be in the interval of 2 and 3, depending on what they have time to see. A huge and detailed museum of the history of everyday life, agricultural technology and rural culture throughout Switzerland.

(4) 8. Oltschibachfall

A very noticeable waterfall for travelers on the way to Meiringen.

3 9. Meiringen

Interesting as a base for exploring the surroundings: Reichenbach Falls, the extensive Haslital valley for active recreation (above the city), mountainous regions around the gorges that go to Meiringen. City attractions include the Sherlock Holmes Museum (it would be surprising if it were not there).

3 11. Reichenbachfall

Advertised by Conan Doyle, but overall not the most outstanding waterfall. After the rains and in the melting season, of course, it will make a bigger impression. But after Lauterbrunnen and Giessbachfall, you can also skip it.

(3) 12. Rosenlaui

A small village in the mountains with a glacial gorge.

(3) 15. Cable car Triftbahn

A small cable car for 8 people takes you up, from where in an hour and a half you can walk to the lake and the suspension bridge above it. Tickets can be bought online in advance, at the Tourist Center Grimseltor in Innertkirchen or by the cable car, if there is space. Ticket times are fixed.

We choose to stay in Interlaken as the accommodation in Interlaken is cheaper and convenient for getting around. The lovely lakeside city of Interlaken is the perfect laidback city break with plenty of shopping and dining options.

Day 1 – Interlaken, Brienz

For your first day in Jungfrau region, settle in the accomodation in the Jungfrau region and spend the day exploring the Interlaken.

Interlaken is the perfect laidback city break with Alpine mountain ranges, perfect for hiking and exploring. It is a vibrant touristy town with many hotels, restaurants, and retail shops. A great place to stay and do some shopping, especially for Swiss chocolates and souvenirs.

Boat ride on Lake Brienz

Often referred to as the gateway to the Jungfrau region, Interlaken is set on the Aare riverbank and lies between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. It makes a great base for us to visit Lake Brienz and the area’s other villages such as Brienz and Iseltwald.

Our Jungfrau region itinerary started with a boat ride on Lake Brienz. Most importantly, our boat ride is covered by Swiss Travel Pass and it is totally free!

Enjoy boat ride on Brienzersee

Located on the east side of Interlaken, Lake Brienz ( Brienzersee) is characterized by the surrounding mountains, waterfalls, and villages. The boat ride on the shimmering waters of Lake Brienz amid the mountains of the Bernese Oberland is an unforgettable experience.

The tranquil lake is extremely awesome with shimmering turquoise waters and stunning backdrops. We all instantly fall in love with its beauty. A very scenic special lake cruise journey and we totally loved it.

The boat stopped at several lakefront attractions along the way such as Giessbach and Iseltwald and finally sailed to our destination. It took about 75 minutes for the cruise ride.

Brienz

We end our cruise journey at Brienz, a scenic lakefront village known for its wood carving tradition. The town is unbelievably charming, lined with traditional half-timbered houses and a nice promenade along the lake. It was so peaceful and tranquil here. We spend about an hour at Brienz strolling around and taking many photos before catching our train back to Interlaken.

Day 1 Jungfrau region itinerary : Arrived Jungfrau region – Interlaken. Take an hour b oat from Interlaken to Brienz, s pending time and explore the Brienz town. From there, take the train back to Interlaken which provides different views and sceneries.

Day 2 – Jungfraujoch

A must-do for Jungfrau region itinerary – an epic train ride to the Jungfraujoch, Top of Europe .

Jungfraujoch sits in the saddle of two of the highest peaks in the Jungfrau region of the Alps (Jungfrau and Mönch). At 3,454 meters up, it is the highest point in Europe that is accessible by train. Take in the awesome beauty at Jungfraujoch and get to know its fascinating history.

Jungfraujoch Travel

The journey to the Jungfraujoch can be done by train, offering you an easy way to see the gigantic Swiss Alps with a scenic view along the train ride. You can choose either Grindelwald or Lauterbrunnen and ride the train to Kleine Scheidegg before making your way to Jungfraujoch.

Depending on your starting point, it took about 2 hours to get you to the Jungfraujoch from Interlaken. Plan at least 2 to 3 hours (not including traveling time) at the Jungfraujoch.

It is best for your journey in the early morning. If you have more time, stop by Wengen on the way down for views of the valley and the Alps.

Jungfrau Region itinerary - Jungfraujoch

There is so much to do and see at Jungfraujoch that you can easily spend your time there.

Things to do in Jungfraujoch include riding the train to Europe’s highest train station, standing on one of the highest points in the Swiss Alps, exploring Sphinx Observatory and Ice Palace, hiking through the snow out to the Mönchsjochhütte, getting the panoramic views over the Alps.

A trip to Jungfraujoch can be confusing for first-timers. If you want to find out more travel information about the Jungfraujoch, read our detailed   Jungfraujoch Travel Guide – Things to do in Jungfraujoch .

Ice Palace at Jungfraujoch

Visiting Jungfraujoch is expensive but it is definitely worth the money. If you go to Switzerland, make sure to cross the Jungfraujoch off your bucket list!

Jungfrau Region Travel Tips : Don’t forgot to show your Swiss Travel Pass when purchasing the Jungfraujoch Ticket. You will get 25% off the price of the ticket to Jungfraujoch.

Get the Swiss Travel Pass (E-Ticket) from Klook here

Day 3 – Murren, Lauterbrunnen

We spend our day 3 Jungfrau Region itinerary on the Swiss mountain village at Murren and Lauterbrunnen. You may swap with Grindelwald to suit on your itinerary planning.

Day 3 Jungfrau Region itinerary : Mürren – Tandem Paragliding – Lauterbrunnen – Staubbach Falls.

With a population of just 450 people, Mürren is an authentic Swiss mountain village with timber houses decked in flowers line the peaceful car-free streets. The top attraction to visit in Murren is Schilthorn Piz Gloria, a great place to see the mountain range and also visit the place of one of the scenes of a James Bond Movie.

We didn’t includ Schilthorn and have other planning for the Murren trip.

Jungfrau Region itinerary - Murren

Surrounded by huge mountains and steep slopes down to Stechelberg, Mürren is known for Tandem Paragliding. The paragliding from Murren is an amazing experience to see breathtaking scenery in the sky. The passenger is strapped into a harness in front of a professional pilot and flew over the Lauterbrunnen valley.

Before the trip, we pre-booked our paragliding adventure via Viator . You can choose with pickup option from the hotel if you are staying in Lauterbrunnen. While we were staying in Interlaken, we make our way to Mûrren. It is very easy and straightforward to go Murren and we can also take a quick visit to Murren village. The departure location is just outside the Schilthornbahn Cablecar Station.

Jungfrau Region itinerary

There are a few options for you to consider for a Paragliding adventure. If you have any desire to tandem paraglide, we recommended doing your adventure in Lauterbrunnen/Murren. It was wonderful to overlook the valley. Our guides are very professional and experienced. A must-do for any age person.

The price is really not cheap but worth it. Imaging you are literally sailing over the Swiss Alps!

  • Paragliding Over the Swiss Alps from Lauterbrunnen – The One We Booked!
  • Tandem Paragliding Experience from Interlaken

Lauterbrunnen

Next, spend your afternoon in Lauterbrunnen, a small village in the Jungfrau region that showcases an abundance of awe-inspiring waterfalls. The scenery all over the valley is simply breathtaking and of course, it can not be described in words or photos.

Jungfrau Region Travel Blog - Lauterbrunnen

There are 72 waterfalls in the Lauterbrunnen Valley with amazing views of the Alps mountain region. The most famous being the 300m Staubbach Falls but there are plenty of other small waterfalls around here. You can get closer to the Staubbach falls with a steep hike up a hill, through a tunnel, and a passageway carved on the side of the mountain.

Lauterbrunnen

Begin your adventures at Lauterbrunnen Village and past the charming timber houses. Next, continue walking to the most famous waterfall in Lauterbrunnen: Staubbach Falls, and appreciate the views. The waterfalls are tremendous and beautiful!

Expect to spend two to three hours here to explore everything leisurely.

Day 4: Grindelwald

Lastly, we headed to Grindelwald for a day of adventures. The main attraction in Grindelwald is the First Summit, which you can reach from Grindelwald via a cable car.

We took a 25-minute cable car ride and then headed to the famous First Cliff Walk by Tissot . The cliff walk is a ton of fun where the walkway is built into the side of the rock. It certainly isn’t for the faint of heart since you walking on an open platform attached to the cliffside. A nice cliffside walk experience for free.

The views from the top are magnificent where you can see the Eiger and surrounding mountains. I highly recommend this excursion on your Jungfrau region itinerary. Simply an amazing experience!

Grindelwald - First Cliff Walk by Tissot

There are lots of fun activities on offer at the summit, including electric bikes, carting, a zip line (First Flyer), and more. Besides, it is also a great kicking-off point for loads of stunning hikes. We didn’t join the activities as we will take the evening train to the next destination. We enjoy the beautiful views before the descent back to Grindelwald village.

Back to the Interlaken, we have our meal at a restaurant nearby Höhematte Park, Interlaken. It is a large meadow with a great vista and a great spot to sit and watch as paragliders float back down to earth. We had the cheese fondue and enjoy it by dipping it with the fondue bread and potatoes.

Jungfrau Region Travel Tips

If you’re trying to design your Jungfrau Region itinerary there are a few things you need to keep in mind first. These are some of our Jungfrau Region travel tips.

Getting Around in Jungfrau Region

Getting Around in Jungfrau Region

The best way to get around Jungfrau Region is using public transport as most of the attractions in the Jungfrau region can be accessed using trains and cable cars. If you’ll be visiting multiple destinations across Switzerland, consider purchasing the Swiss Travel Pass . This valuable pass allows you to travel on any train, bus, or ferry service in Switzerland and you also get discounted tickets to many attractions. Great 25% discount for Jungfraujoch.

Although driving is a good way to visit Switzerland, most of the top sights in the Jungfrau region can be only reached by public transport. So we wouldn’t recommend renting a car to explore the area. If you’re planning for driving in Swiss, we recommend using the website Rental Cars to find your vehicle, as it’s the largest booking platform on the net and offers the best prices .

Best Time To Visit Jungfrau Region

Switzerland is beautiful year-round and each season brings a reason to visit Jungfrau Region: whether it’s flowers and pretty weather in the spring, the warmth and liveliness of summer, the color changes of autumn, or the snowy winter, you can’t go wrong traveling to Jungfrau Region at any time of the year.

If you want to take advantage of hiking, cliff walks, and adventure sports then the Summer months are the best time to visit. During summer, all the mountain attractions are open and accessible. The weather is warm and pleasant for all the outdoor activities. But it can be crowded as many travelers are flocking to Jungfrau Region in Summer.

How Many Days for Jungfrau Region

There is so much to see and do in Jungfrau Region that you can spend a week here. Try to plan your Jungfrau Region itinerary with three days: 1 day for the Interlaken and lake, 1 day for the Swiss village town (Lauterbrunnen/Grindelwald), and 1 day for the Jungfraujoch.

Overview: Planning for Jungfrau Region Itinerary

Hopefully, this Jungfrau region itinerary helps you plan your trip to one of Switzerland’s most beautiful destinations. Four days in the Jungfrau region is never enough time to really explore it in detail. There are so many enjoyable things to do in the Jungfrau region that you can easily spend more days in the area. What’s difficult is working out how to experience the best of the Jungfrau region for your own itinerary.
