The Pretenders at the Electric Ballroom review: the iconic rock band are as raw and raucous as ever

the pretenders tour 2023 review

“We really take rock 'n' roll more seriously nowadays,” said Chrissie Hynde onstage at London’s Electric Ballroom. The Pretenders had just charged through Tequila, an urgent deep-cut from 1984’s celebrated third record Learning To Crawl that felt as vicious as it did 40 years ago. Hynde’s grin was unmissable from every corner of the packed-out venue.

The Pretenders are undeniably a legendary rock group. When they performed a last-minute set at Glastonbury’s The Park Stage earlier this year, they were joined onstage by Foo Fighters ’ Dave Grohl, The Smiths ’ Johnny Marr and Paul McCartney like it was the most normal thing in the world. The following weekend, they played just before Guns ‘N’ Roses at London’s Hyde Park.

Their status as icons hasn’t stopped them from spending the majority of 2023 playing sweaty club shows across North America and the UK, however. “It’s just more fun,” Hynde explained when the band first announced the tour. “You can see everyone, they’re right in your face and it’s a laugh.”

While the 1,500-capacity Camden venue didn’t allow for much in the way of rock 'n' roll excess, the band still brought the theatrics via playful instrumental breakdowns and flamboyant guitar solos. Hynde’s voice still sounded incredible, capable of both delicate beauty and thundering power, while the band was tight but never rigid. It gave the 100-minute set a wondrous sense of unpredictability, with the band constantly chasing excitement.

There was a lot of heart amongst the chaos, though. Tributes were paid to late friends Joe Strummer from The Clash and The New York Dolls’ Johnny Thunder, alongside beloved covers of The Kinks ’ Stop Your Sobbing and I Go To Sleep.

Refusing to rely purely on nostalgia, though, the set pulled heavily from The Pretenders’ more recent efforts. Tracks from 2020’s snarling Hate For Sale were delivered with a fiery lust for life while the hammering songs from 2023’s Relentless sounded like a renewed mission statement from a band with plenty left in the tank.

“We didn’t do any hits at all but you didn’t care,” Hynde beamed before the first of two encores. Moments later, she was back onstage performing timeless rock staples Back On The Chain Gang and Don’t Get Me Wrong alongside early hits Precious and Tattooed Love Boys.

Throughout their lengthy career, The Pretenders’ ability to deliver free-spirited rock & roll has never wavered. It doesn’t seem to be slowing down any time soon, either, with this gig offering a seriously good time for everyone in the room.

Live Review: The Pretenders @ The Atlantis — 8/31/23

Live Review: The Pretenders @ The Atlantis — 8/31/23

With the release of their 12th studio album a few weeks away, The Pretenders are on the road alternating gigs opening stadiums for Guns n’ Roses with headlining some small club gigs as they make their way around the country. The latter brought them to The Atlantis last Thursday for a very special and intimate gig.

While their sets playing to tens of thousands of people have skewed heavily towards the band’s hits, of which there are *many*, these club dates have swerved hard in the opposite direction, featuring older songs and deep album cuts along with a few newer songs. So anyone hoping to hear “Brass in Pocket,” “Back On the Chain Gang,” “Don’t Get Me Wrong,” or “Message of Love” were totally out of luck.

But longtime fans were in heaven and were thrilled to hear “Stop Your Sobbing” (a Kinks cover that served as the band’s first ever single in 1979), 1981’s “The Adultress” as well as “Time the Avenger” and “Thumbelina,” both from 1984, at The Atlantis on August 31. Their new album Relentless, out Sept. 15, provided four songs in the set, including the standouts “Let the Sun Come In” and “Losing My Sense of Taste.”

Stream “Let the Sun Come In” by The Pretenders on YouTube:

By the way, Chrissie Hynde turns 72 this week. You’d never guess it by watching her live. Her voice is still strong and her unique vocal phrasings make her one of a kind. The current line up of the band is particularly strong with guitarist James Walbourne taking the heavy lifting on most songs with support from a very strong rhythm section featuring bassist Dave Page and drummer Kris Sonne.

Hynde and The Pretenders have always straddled the line between the pop charts and alternative rock world and their performance at The Atlantis was a great example why. Seeing such an iconic band play selections from their entire career in such an intimate venue is something those in attendance won’t soon forget.

The Pretenders At Glastonbury 2023, Reviewed

Chrissie hynde and co. roll back the years, with help from johnny marr and the ubiquitous dave grohl..

Glastonbury 2023

In the crammed-to-the-gills Woodsies tent, Rick Astley has just finished his Smiths set, where he’s joined by Blossoms to interpret the Morrissey and Marr songbook with sincerity and panache. Now over at The Park stage, The Pretenders are playing the 7.45pm slot, and ex-member J ohnny Marr is on stage with them playing 1982 hit Back On The Chain Gang, a song that has also been covered by Morrissey. Such is the circle of life.

“Glastonbury,” muses lead Pretender Chrissie Hynde . “How many memories? How many past loves? How many past lives?” After sterling recent material – opener Losing My Sense Of Taste doesn’t come out until September – she starts to reflect on some of them , and the digging into an incomparable catalogue begins.

Hynde gives a shout out to late founder members James Honeyman-Scott and Pete Farndon before playing 1979’s debut single Kid, while 1983’s Thumbelina is a rockabilly thumper with some lightning guitar work from the bequiffed and prodigiously talented James Walbourne .

Hynde’s unique vibrato is still a thing of wonder: Hymn To Her is beautiful, as is Don’t Get Me Wrong, whose flood of emotion is enhanced by the guesting Marr’s restrained, florid, rhythmic guitar work which always, it seemed, owed a debt to early Pretenders. One song later and Chrissie is joshingly saying there’s a drunk backstage demanding to play: out comes Dave Grohl to play drums really fast to Tattooed Love Boys. A supergroup is forming live before our eyes. The last song is Mystery Achievement, a 1979 song that sounds freshly written, which features the line, “I love pretending.”

So do we. At the very end, none other than Paul McCartney (more of him tomorrow, surely?) comes back onstage with a beaming Chrissie and treats us to Thumbs Aloft. Tonight The Pretenders deserved exactly that, and more.

Pretenders in Dublin review: Eternal rock chick Chrissie Hynde leads a quickfire tour of a 45-year career

In fine, beguiling voice and with edgy guitar riffology, hynde’s new songs reference familiar nuggets while saluting the ghosts in the gods.

The Pretenders

3olympia, dublin.

It’s not considered polite to discuss a woman’s age, but as Chrissie Hynde struts the 3Olympia stage in leather boots, defiantly wielding her Fender Telecaster, it’s clear the Pretenders leader is not fixing to get into any discussion about age. “We don’t have to get fat, we don’t have to get old,” she rebel-yells during the band’s latest single, Let the Sun Come In, from their forthcoming album, Relentless. It’s the first of a three-song encore that ends in a total country-rock wigout of their 1985 song Thumbelina. Before that, Hynde and co deliver a quickfire set that runs through some of the band’s beloved hits, along with plenty of other rockers and rollers from all points in the band’s 45-year career.

She might have passed the 70 milestone, but Hynde is still a rock chick through and through: still cool, still edgy and still in fine, beguiling voice. Her band of younger men are worked like a rock‘n’roll chain gang – but this is clearly a labour of love, as the band deliver the familiar guitar lines from past hits such as Kid, Don’t Get Me Wrong, Message of Love and Back on the Chain Gang. Guitarist James Walbourne, with whom Hynde has written most of the new album, never lets up on the riffology, as the band swings from punk to blues to country-rock and back to punk again.

For long-standing fans, the ghosts of original guitarist James Honeyman-Scott and bassist Pete Farndon will always hover in the gods, and there’ll be a few who’ll miss the band’s other surviving original member, drummer Martin Chambers, who’s not part of the current line-up. But, as Hynde herself admits, she’s always felt like she’s in a tribute band to her fallen bandmates. Just last week the band lost another former member, the former Smiths bassist Andy Rourke, who played on the band’s 1994 album, Last of the Independents.

Sunday night’s gig is part of a tour that was postponed by Covid in 2020, and the set features several tracks from the 2020 album Hate for Sale, including the amped-up title track and the rather excellent The Buzz (which cheekily steals the a few chord progressions from Kid), as well as the deliciously self-aware ballad You Can’t Hurt a Fool (”Look at her now, she’s centre stage/ Too old to know better, too young for her age”). We also get a sneak peek at the tracks from the new album, including I’m Losing my Sense of Taste, but the big moments to savour are when the band pull out nuggets such as The Adulteress, Time the Avenger, and – still my favourite Pretenders track – Talk of the Town.

Pretenders Announce 2023 Headlining Tour

by Peter Burditt July 19, 2023, 1:30 pm

The Pretenders are set to kick off their headlining Relentless Tour on August 16 at New York City’s Bowery Ballroom. The tour will consist of nine different locations, with its final show being on October 6 in San Francisco at Bimbo’s 365 Club. Tickets go on sale Friday (July 21) at 10am local time.

Videos by American Songwriter

The tour runs parallel with The Pretenders’ new studio album, Relentless , which is set to be released on September 15. The project features the second full-length songwriting collaboration between Chrissie Hynde and James Walbourne, the first being the 2020 album Hate For Sale . The album was produced by Grammy Award-winning producer, David Wrench, and was recorded at the iconic Battery Studios in Northwest London. Another star-studded appearance on the album is composer Johnny Greenwood (Radiohead, The Smile), who both composed and played on the already-released album’s single, “I Think About You Daily.”

The announcement of both the tour and the album comes as quite the full-circle moment for the band. The recording and release of the album mark the band’s return to the Warner Music Group after their departure from the label two decades ago. Furthermore, the tour is the band’s 45th year of playing live shows since their debut in 1978.

The Pretenders will simultaneously be making appearances alongside Guns N’ Roses on their North American Stadium Tour set to begin on August 11 at Hershey Park Stadium. Additionally, the band will also be playing at the Ohana Festival as a supporting act for the Foo Fighters. In past years, the Pretenders has performed with Fleetwood Mac, Journey, Def Leppard, and Phil Collins. They’ve also made festival appearances at Glastonbury, Vilar De Mouros, and The Great Escape.

The Pretenders: Relentless review – recalls their early-80s imperial phase

(Parlophone) The interplay between Chrissie Hynde and guitarist James Walbourne goes from strength to strength on the punk survivors’ 12th album

I f the Pretenders ’ releases in the 2010s blurred the boundary between Chrissie Hynde the solo artist and watered-down iterations of the band that were over-reliant on session musicians, then Relentless goes some way to correcting this lack of continuity. This 12th album finds the partnership between Hynde and guitarist/songwriting foil James Walbourne – which so lit up 2020’s Hate for Sale – developing further. Opener Losing My Sense of Taste sets the tone, Walbourne’s washes of guitar noise very prominent in the mix, while Hynde wonders whether she’s suffering from “senile dementia or some kind of psychosis”.

That same interplay informs Merry Widow, on which Hynde gleefully relates how she’s a divorcee, “but I feel like a merry, merry widow” as Walbourne gradually ratchets up the tension before cutting loose in gloriously OTT fashion. Elsewhere, A Love and Let the Sun Come In recall the jangle of their early-80s imperial phase. The ballads are equally well executed, most notably the closing I Think About You Daily, with Jonny Greenwood’s hypnotic string arrangement imbuing Hynde’s uncharacteristically swagger-free vocals with a powerful sense of regret and vulnerability.

Pretenders, ‘Relentless': Album Review

For the past decade or so,  Chrissie Hynde  has satisfied her creative whims by releasing albums as both a solo artist and by her longtime band  Pretenders . You could argue, of course, that the Pretenders have long been a Hynde solo project anyway, with their leader swapping out backing musicians as she and the albums saw fit.

But there's more to it than that. The three records she's released under her name and one credited to JP, Chrissie and the Fairground Boys were more than mere moniker swaps. From her solo debut, 2014's Stockholm , to 2021's Standing in the Doorway: Chrissie Hynde Sings Bob Dylan , there's a distinction in the subtleties of her craft. That she reserves the best material for her band is no accident.

Relentless , the 12th Pretenders album, isn't too far removed from its predecessor, 2020's Hate for Sale , which returned the band to the jagged punk sound of its early days. But where that album fought like it had something more to prove to doubters, Relentless settles into a familiar groove afforded by that victory. Like so many Pretenders albums, there's a mix of midtempo rockers and ballads here to remind you that Hynde was never one for fulfilling expectations.

As with Hate for Sale , all of Relentless ' songs were co-written with guitarist James Walbourne. But original drummer Martin Chambers, who played on his first Pretenders album in 18 years, is missing this time. That takes off some of the edge from  Relentless , as does the often sterile production, but the wailing guitars on the opening "Losing My Sense of Taste" and the ringing pop of "Let the Sun Come In" remind listeners of the band's roots.

There are some good songs here, particularly "A Love," which sounds like a Learning to Crawl -era outtake, and the closing "I Think About You Daily" featuring a string section arranged and conducted by Radiohead 's Jonny Greenwood. Still, Hynde can't shake her softer side that's been an unguarded part of her work since the Pretenders' debut. It's at these moments that the thin line between Pretenders the band and Hynde the solo artist is blurred.  Relentless is a reminder that they're forever inseparable.

The Pretenders have no shortage of massive, commercially successful hits — like “Brass in Pocket,” “Back on the Chain Gang,” “I’ll Stand By You,” and “Don’t Get Me Wrong.” At Thursday’s very sold-out 7th Street Entry show, they didn’t play a single one of them. Instead, they treated the fortunate few fans in attendance to a diehard Pretenders fan’s ideal setlist. Pulling exclusively from their extensive back catalog of B-sides, they proved that any song can be a hit as long as it’s played like one.

The Pretenders are currently in the midst of two simultaneous tours. One is what you would expect from a band with their legacy — playing North American arenas in support of Guns N’ Roses. At these shows, they play all the hits. The second tour is for the Pretenders themselves at 600-capacity or smaller venues on their off days from the GN’R tour. The Entry was the smallest venue of the bunch, capping out at just 250 fans.

A few minutes before showtime, Parliament’s “Chocolate City” began playing over the house speakers as the lights dimmed. The band, led by the legendary Chrissie Hynde, entered to an applause that somehow made the Entry feel even smaller. Hynde strapped on her sparkly Fender Telecaster as guitarist James Walbourne, bassist Dave Page, and drummer Kris Sonne took their respective places.

They went right into the first songs of the night: “Losing My Sense of Taste” and “A Love,” two tracks off Relentless, due out next Friday. Both songs feature all the components that make classic Pretenders songs so great — spaced-out, jangly guitar tones, rock-solid drum beats, bass that knows exactly when to step into the spotlight. And, of course, Hynde’s smoky, contralto voice, packed with bravado and vibrato. It was clear that Hynde still has it. Then again, it’s safe to say she’ll always have it.

Hynde took a brief moment to address the crowd: “I love this city. My favorite band, Low, is from here.” Then they launched into “Turf Accountant Daddy” off of 2020’s Hate for Sale. Following with “The Adultress,” off of 1981’s Pretenders II , Hynde used every ounce of her vocal range, from sultry low talking to vibrato-laden vocal runs.

Hynde and the Pretenders’ artistic prowess has always been a known quantity. But witnessing her playful and subtly seductive attitude, the raw grit in her voice, and the unfettered passion behind every song up close showed how she paved the way for bandleaders like Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs .

Hynde also surrounds herself with absolute juggernaut musicians each night. On the rockabilly-friendly jam “Boots of Chinese Plastic,” Sonne was working overtime with big band and jazz swing fills – complete with chaotic, yet controlled flashy arm movements – that would’ve made Buddy Rich proud. Meanwhile, on “Thumbelina,” he executed a perfect Buck Owens-style country gallop without missing a beat. Page and Sonne’s rhythm section stayed perfectly in sync while the former’s bass lines carried each song without taking over.

Guitarist James Walbourne also brought a significant piece of the night’s magic by putting his entire body into his guitar solos. He has a way of going over the top without coming across as showing off. On “Biker,” his wah-ed-out solo utilized just enough of the effect without overdoing it. During the “Gotta Wait” solo, he was damn near convulsing. Finally, on “Thumbelina,” Walbourne’s fancy pick work was already mesmerizing, but on an extended solo he broke loose and outdid himself. At that moment it became apparent just how much fun the band is having playing these small-room shows.

While much of the night was light-hearted and upbeat, it wasn’t without its slower, down-tempo moments as well. For Hate for Sale ’s “You Can’t Hurt a Fool,” Hynde ditched her guitar and grabbed the mic, dedicating the song to all the women in the crowd. “If there are any!” she noted. The heartfelt ballad had Hynes digging deep with her voice, projecting as much as she would for a date on the other, bigger tour but with just a faint hint of restraint. Grabbing her guitar again for a beautifully heartbreaking rendition of “Tequila,” her voice once again delivered all of its delicious vibrato. Her voice on the first song of the encore, Pretenders II ’s “I Go to Sleep,” perfectly captured the sense of loss that comes with ending a love you thought would last forever.

Massively successful bands playing small rooms is certainly nothing new. Heck, the Killers just played First Avenue earlier this year. But to see such a legacy act like the Pretenders treat their most dedicated fans to a set of B-sides was truly something special. And the fact that the show was over before 10 p.m., well, that made it all the more special.

the pretenders tour 2023 review

I like the way you cross the street ’cause you’re precious Moving through the Cleveland heat how precious Taking rides and all the kicks was so precious But you know I was shittin’ bricks ’cause I’m precious Make me wanna, make me wanna, you made me make it Oh, you’re so mean

East 55th and Euclid Avenue was real precious Hotel Sterling coming into view how precious It’s a pity that you bruised my hip ’cause I’m precious You shouldn’t let your manners slip you’re too precious

Make me wanna, make me wanna to – Oh you make me make it

Oh, you’re so mean

We went around and round and round and round and round the Shoreway We was a do it do it do it on the pavement Oh maybe, maybe I’m gonna have a baby We was a duet, oh we do it on the pavement

I was feeling kind of ethereal ’cause I’m precious I had my eye on your imperial you’re real precious Now Howard the Duck and Mr Stress both stayed “Trapped in a world they never made” But not me baby I’m too precious I had to fuck off

Oh you make me wanna , you make me wanna Oh you made me make it

You’re so mean

This is a mercy mission From a faceless messenger Who don’t wanna see you hit Here’s the word, listen to it

Somebody that you used to know Is back in town you better go

This is a mercy mission A voice you’ll never hear again From a Southside call box Winged demons are the hardest to outfox

The same one you lost on the run Gonna show you that it ain’t no fun

You better get out of town cause you’re gonna get hit I didn’t wanna see you hit

This is a mercy mission You’ll find your schedule underneath the door All the arrangements have been made Major expenses have been paid as you know

Don’t forget the last detail Accept no parcels in the mail

Anger and lust, my senses running amok Bewildered and deluded, have I been hit by a truck? When my tongue lay inside his lip Felt like the time in the womb But I woke up with a headache that split my skull Alone in the room

I got down on the floor with my head pressed between my knees Under the bed with my teeth sunk into my own flesh I said, “Baby, oh sweetheart”

Lust turns to anger, a kiss to a slug Something was sticky on your shag rug, look at the tiles I remember the way he groaned And moved with an animal skill I rubbed my face in the sweat that ran down his chest It was all very run of the mill

But I noticed his scent started to change somehow His face went berserk and the veins bulged – on his brow I said, “Baby, oh sweetheart”

Bondage to lust, abuse of facility Blackmailed emotions confuse the demon and devotee I was sure his intentions were sweet And that mine was as well But a wish is a shot in the dark When your coin’s down the well

I got out in the hall with my teeth in my head Up to my neck and I said, said, said, “Dead” I said, “Baby, oh sweetheart”

The mid-twenty joys, around a heart that’s black and blue The ‘T’ love boys, I tore my knees up getting to you Cause I needed to find out what the thing was for

Been reading, but man the time came to explore

I went ape wire, cause I thought Like I’d like it.

little tease, but I didn’t mean it But you mess with the goods doll, you gotta pay

A good time was guaranteed for one and all The tattoos, did target practice in the hall While waiting for their number to get called out I, I, I, I found out what the wait was about

I was a good time, yeah, I got pretty good At changing tyres, upstairs bro’ I shot my mouth off And you showed me what that hole was for

Now I see you all impressed and half undressed You got paint stick all over the scars and lumps and bumps The ‘T’ love boys have got you where I used to lay Well ha ha and too bad, but you know what they say

Stop snivellin’ You’re gonna make some plastic surgeon a rich man Oh, but the prestige and the glory Another human interest story,

You are that

Said the wait child, magic child, work it on out , work it The wait child, pinball child, pool hall child hurts The wait child, pacing child, forth and back now hurts The wait child, a neon light, late night lights hurt

Oh gonna hurt some child, child Gonna hurt some, whoa my baby

Said the wait child, bruised ball child, pride slapped child hurts The wait child, crest felled child, tear eyed child hurts The wait child, bus stop child, late come child hurts The wait child, platform walk, idle talk hurts

I said child, child stare into the street light Messed up child, lonely boy tonight Kick the wall, turn the street and back again Oh boy you’ve been forgotten

Said the wait child, pacing child, forth and back now hurts The wait child, bus stop child, late come child hurts The wait child, pool hall child, pin table now hurts The wait child, magic child, work it on out now work it

Gonna hurt some

Child child child

Gonna hurt some – Oh my baby

It is time for you to stop

All of your sobbing Yes, it’s time for you to stop All of your sobbing, oh oh oh

There’s one thing you gotta do To make me still want you Gotta stop sobbing now Oh yeah , stop it stop it

Gotta stop sobbin now

It is time for you to laugh Instead of crying Yes, it’s time for you to laugh So keep on trying, oh oh oh

There’s one thing you gotta do

To make me still want you

Gotta stop now oh yeah

Stop it stop stop

Each little tear that falls from your eye Makes, makes me want To take you in my arms and tell you To stop all your sobbing

There’s one thing you gotta do To make me still want you And there’s one thing you gotta know To make me want you so Gotta stop sobbing now Oh yeah, stop it, stop it

Gotta stop sobbin now oh

Don’t whinge, Stop it stop it Gotta stop sobbin Stop it stop it

Kid, what changed your mood You’ve gone all sad, so I feel sad too I think I know Some things you never outgrow

You think it’s wrong I can tell you do How can I explain You don’t want me to

Kid, my only kid Look so small, you’ve gone so quiet I know you know What I’m about, I won’t deny it

But you forgive though you don’t understand You’ve turned your head You dropped my hand

All my sorrow All my blues All my sorrow

Shut the light, go away Full of grace, you cover your face

Kid, gracious kid Your eyes are blue but you won’t cry I know, angry tears are too dear You won’t let them go

Your private life drama baby leave me out x4 ( You’ve been lying to someone about me – stop!)

J’ai les glands with your theatrics your acting’s a drag It’s o-k on TV cause you can turn it off but don’t try me yes, your marriage is a tragedy but it’s not my concern I’m very superficial I hate anything official

Your private life drama baby leave me out x4

Sentimental gestures only bore me to death you’ve made a desperate appeal now, save your breath attachment to obligation through guilt and regret shit, that’s so wet

and your sex life complications are not my fascinations

Your private life dram baby leave me out drama baby leave me out x4

You ask me for advice I said ‘use the door’ but you’re still clinging to somebody you deplore and now you want to use me for emotional blackmail I just feel pity when you lie contempt when you cry

your private life drama baby, leave me out

Got brass in pocket got bottle, I’m gonna use it intention ,I feel inventive

gonna make you make you make you notice

Got motion, restrained emotion been driving, Detroit leaning No reason ,just seems so pleasing

gonna make ,make you make you notice

gonna use my arms gonna use my legs gonna use my style gonna use my side step gonna use my fingers gonna use my my my imagination

Cause I gonna make you see there’s nobody else here no one like me

I’m special so special I gotta have some of your attention give it to me

Got rhythm, can’t miss a beat got new skank, it’s so reet got something, I’m winking at you

gonna make you ,make you make you notice

Cause I gotta make you see There’s nobody else here no one like me

I’m special so special I gotta have some of your attention give it to me.

I tried to talk to my baby I said, “No no no no baby Please don’t cry No, no, no, baby please ‘Cause all of the leaves come down Every time babies cry All of the leaves come down”

I put my arms ‘round my baby I said, “Hush, hush, hush, hush Baby sleep tight now Hush, hush, hush, baby sleep ‘Cause all of the birds start to sing Every time babies dream All of the birds start to sing”

Nobody wants to see Lovers of today happy, so assume They’re going to part Nobody wants to be with someone So afraid they’ll be left with A broken heart

I kissed the eyes of my baby I said, “Dream, dream, dream, dream Baby all night long Dream, dream, dream all the night Cause all of the stars in the skies Twinkle on baby’s eyes All of the stars in the skies”

I tried to talk to you baby No, no, no, no No, no No I’ll never feel Like a man in a man’s world

Mystery achievement Don’t breathe down my neck, no I got no trophies on display, I sign them away I mean what the heck

All of your promises Don’t fill me with pride, no I just want to get out on the floor And do the Cuban Slide, Slide, Slide, Slide

But every day, every night time I find Mystery achievement, you’re on my mind, on my mind Every day, every night time I feel Mystery achievement, you’re so unreal

Mystery achievement Where’s my sandy beach, yeah I have my dreams like everybody else But their out of reach, I said right out of reach

I could ignore you Your demands are unending, I got no tears on my ice cream But you know me, I love pretending

I drink tequila ’cause I can’t have your lips tonight I don’t want to feel ya I don’t want to feel bad tonight You make me suffer, suffer suffer and you just don’t know I’m muy barrocho down in New Mexico

I want to remember what I try to forget That scene in the car park that I still regret Just like before, five six times I even lost track I ran away crawling ’cause I fall every time I look back

Miles, baby, hundreds of highways and truck stops I’ve used Cars, baby, hundreds of cars have passed and refused I stood on the shoulder with tears in my eyes

I drink tequila and watch the game in the bar I don’t care who loses, I don’t know who the teams are We had our time, time, time, but the bell’s finally tolled And my Ohio winter was finally too cold

I’m the adulteress but I didn’t want to be But I’m convenient and I make good tea I stand accused of the worst crime in history That’s my mystery I’m the adultress

I go to the park with a bag of crumbs for the birds That’s where we meet without words He takes my hand and stares into the wood There’s nothing to understand, it’s understood I’m the adultress

Look at the fool Made up to go out She’s desperate and lonely But she’s puttin’ it about Look at the spinster Comin’ down off the shelf She’s in love And she hates herself

Don’t try to stop me, don’t get in my way It’s too late, I’ve made my play Does misery love company? I’ll be in the bar, you’ll find me I’m the adultress

You’re not suppose to do that and you know you’re not allowed to But you seem to get your kicks out of doing what you’re not allowed to You deliberately defy the rules ’cause the law’s upheld by fools But you know that Bad boys get spanked. Huh!

You can look but don’t touch but no, you can’t resist Don’t you ever think about the consequence? guys like you never do That’s the kind of stuff that floors are made out of that’s the kind of stuff that whores are made out of but you know that bad boys get spanked Huh!

You don’t listen do you asshole Don’t be a punk all your life someone’s gonna sort you out they’ll try to make a man out of you now say ‘ yes sir’ say ‘ no sir’ say ‘ yes m’am’ say ‘ no m’am’ you know that bad boys get spanked

Bad boys get spanked

Now the reason we’re here As man and woman Is to love each other Take care of each other

When love walks in the room Everybody stand up Oh, it’s good, good, good Like Brigitte Bardot

Now look at the people In the streets, in the bars We are all of us in the gutter But some of us are looking at the stars

Look ’round the room Life is unkind We fall but we keep gettin’ up Over and over and over

Me and you, every night, every day We’ll be together, always this way Your eyes of blue, like the heavens above Talk to me darling, with a message of love

Now the reason we’re here Every man, every woman Is to help each other Stand by each other

When love walks in the room Everybody stand up Oh, it’s good, good, good Say I love you, I love you, I love you I love you, I love you, I love you

Talk to me darlin’ Talk to me darlin’ Talk to me darlin’ Talk to me darlin’

When I look up from my pillow I dream you are there with me Though you are far away I know you’ll always be near to me

I go to sleep, sleep And imagine that you’re there with me I go to sleep, sleep And imagine that you’re there with me

I look around me And feel you are ever so close to me Each tear that flows from my eye Brings back memories of you to me

I go to sleep sleep And imagine that you’re there with me x2

I was wrong, I will cry I will love you till the day I die You were all, you alone and no one else You were meant for me

When morning comes again I have the loneliness you left me Each day drags by Until finally night time descends on me

I go to sleep etc.

I wrote a letter to you my friend So many letters that I never send I think about you at the day’s end

The time that we had I laughed in my bed The stupid things you said We were two birds of paradise

When I was a little girl With clay horses and lambs on the shelf I caught frogs in ditches and listened for elves My friends and I had a world unto ourselves

No grown-ups could find us when we Made our plans so secretly To run away ever to be With the birds of paradise

Once upon a time, my mind still there wanders Back in your room, the things I remember One time when we took off our clothes But you were cryin’, cryin’ You said ‘Nothing lasts forever.’ We were happy together

I thought about you in Stockholm and Rome Me in my hotel room, you in your home This is the life they say that dreams are made of But don’t forget and please do forgive me I still have that something you did give me I meant to write but dreams will outlive me

And dream of paradise

It’s such a drag to want something sometime One thing leads to another I know Was a time I wanted you for mine Nobody knew You arrived like a day And passed like a cloud I made a wish, I said it out loud Out loud in a crowd Everybody heard ‘Twas the talk of the town

It’s not my place to know what you feel I’d like to know but why should I? Who were you then, who are you now? Common labourer by night, by day highbrow Back in my room I wonder, then I Sit on the bed and look at the sky Up in the sky Clouds rearrange Like the talk of the town

Maybe tomorrow, maybe someday Maybe tomorrow, maybe someday You’ve changed your place in this world You’ve changed your place in this world

Oh, but it’s hard to live by the rules I never could and still never do But the rules and such never bothered you You call the shots and they follow I watch you still from a distance then go Back to my room, you’ll never know I want you, I want you but now Who’s the talk of the town?

You guys are the pits of the world

Oh whoa whoa whoa, this is no place for me Burnin’ down the innerbelt, from jacuzzi to jacuzzi, It’s all right for you man, gettin’ smashed and gettin’ suntanned But I know my place, where’s my suitcase?

Pack it up or throw it away What I can’t carry – bury Oh you’ll remember me and I’ll remember you But that was a long, long time ago when I was passin’ through

All my family, all my friends, my lovers I got to find them My enemies, my new family, my new friends My future enemies, I got to flush ‘em out

So pack it all up, nothing goes in storage I’m burnin’ every bridge, burn, baby, burn I see your dog got shot, well, hell, never mind That’s showbiz, big boy, you’ve got to be cruel to be kind

Oh, whoa whoa whoa, give over and admit it I’ve been tearing down the interstate like some kind of bleeding git It’s all right for the boss, his gain’s my loss And it gets me down It really gets me down

So pack it up – cut the crap When the clock starts talkin’, I’ll start walkin’ And when you pass in your Porsche, please don’t offer me a ride I may be a skunk but you’re a piece of junk

And furthermore I don’t like your trousers, And your appalling taste in women And what about your mind? And your insipid record collection. Home video centre, the usual pornography that all you scum lap up you’re the pits of the world

Take, take, take, takin’ what you don’t need You’re get, get, gettin’ what you don’t need Stand back, take a look and take heed All the children in God’s kingdom bleed

See the networks of concrete and steel They’ve no mystery but what they reveal Tells a story of a future that’s void Of the beauty and the majesty that life on Earth is meant to be

Talk, talk, talk, talk about the government Not a word about political favour Everything touched is my political choice The life you take is your political voice

The sacred cow’s come crashing to her knees The golden harvest reaped without intelligence There’s no chance between the heavens and the seas In a blood bath don’t laugh, grab your piece of golden calf

Waste not, want not, pick it up Waste not, want not, pick it up Waste not, want not, pick it up Waste not, want not

Do unto others as you wish be done to you There’s a million lies around everything true You slaughter when you feast, you disrespect the beast We make our bed and lie there, take your share

Waste not, want not, pick it up Waste not, want not, pick it up Waste not, want not, pick it up Pick it up and eat it

Waste not, want not

Way up in the sky Over the city, over Tokyo Silver light, summer moon You’ll be over somebody’s winter this afternoon

While the dolphins swim in the sea You’re going grey, my baby Still the war is waging endlessly Day after day, day after day

Way up in the sky Over the city and Lake Erie You remember the flats, you were there Out every night Mr. Moonlight

Round and round and round we go Just like yesterday

Way up in the sky Over the city where you sleep tonight The light outside your window blinks ‘Hotel, hotel, hotel’ Open the blind and dream in a moonbeam

When the war’s finally over We’ll meet again And pick up where we left off

Those jealous dogs, always on the alert territorial rights They’ll take your back and leave your shirt Like that jealous bitch Always wanting more The courts have made her rich And the click of high heels down the corridor Jealous, jealous, jealous dogs

Those jealous dogs, detectives every one Don’t be a sucker all your life She’s gonna have you hung Evidence, evidence, evidence Suspicion invites treachery Oh you really got taken Bringin’ home the bacon Jealous, jealous, jealous dogs

Bow, wow, wow Here come the dogs grrrrrr Here come the dogs ruff ruff ruff Here come the dogs Stand straight, don’t slouch Get down off the couch!

(You’re not allowed on the couch Get down off the couch!)

Those jealous dogs, they get worse and worse Every time you turn around They’re sniffin’ at your purse Who do they think we are? What do they think we do? It’s hard to get in the mood When you’re treated like some kind of dog food Jealous, jealous, jealous dogs

Bow, wow, wow, here come the dogs Ruff ruff, here come the dogs Get down, here come the dogs Mind your leg, roll over and beg

Happy birthday darlin’ Empty heart Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas Apart

Just before it rains and the wind whips ’round the balcony And the sky closes On the English roses

She’ll be pacing ‘Round and ’round and ‘Round and ’round her room These storms always find her to remind her

Into the endless sky The pink over grey She looks for an answer But it’s too late

Maybe it’s true Some things were just Never meant to be –Maybe not

This is a story Of fruit cut from the vine Forgot and left to rot Long before its time

This is a story About the girl Who lived next door Looking for someone to hold

A wish made on a star Brought her here tonight In the courtyard she waits A thousand broken dates

But she holds the hymnal Where so carefully pressed Is the English rose She laid to rest

It’s only a story Flowers in full bloom Bouquets in every room

This is a story Fruit cut from the vine Looking for someone to hold

Shh, here they come…

Now Louie, Louie had his day Nothin’ gonna change that now The rats and snakes will never fade away Not while I’m alive Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!

There come the Cossacks The Road Spiders The Supergliders Burnin’ trash, flickin’ class, all the white trash, yeah! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!

Now Louie Louie had his time Seems like only yesterday Sadie and Hattie got married and moved away Cause they had nothin left to say, yeah!

You with the glasses, I’ll see you later And we’ll find love I know Rockin’, reelin’, double dealin’ One more time, this time with feelin’, yeah! Hey! Hey! Hey! Hey!

Oh, you move so fine Yeah what a scene I said Mmm, kinda aquiline Yeah baby saw through this now

You smell so good Yeah, and your shirts always pressed You’ll be the best inside my baby Yeah, I’m all under arrest now!

Louie, Louie made his mark On this tender heart of mine The Jamaican moon don’t let it get dark We rock out in the night time

Let’s get on outta here now, let’s go!

The middle of the road Is trying to find me Well I’m standing in the middle of life With my past behind me

But, I got a smile For everyone I meet As long as you don’t try dragging my bag Or dropping the bomb on my street

Now come on baby Get in the road Oh come on now In the middle of the road yeah

In the middle of the road You see the darndest things Like fat cats driving around in jeeps through the city Wearing big diamond rings and silk suits

Past corrugated tin shacks full-up with kids And man I don’t mean a Hampstead nursery But when you own a big chunk of the bloody Third World The babies just come with the scenery

Oh come on baby Get in the road Oh come on now In the middle of the road yeah

The middle of the road Is no private cul-de-sac I can’t get from the cab to the curb Without some little jerk on my back

Well don’t harass me, can’t you tell? I’m going home, I’m tired as hell I’m not the cat I used to be I’ve got a kid, I’m thirty-three, baby

Get in the road Come on now In the middle of the road, yeah

I found a picture of you oh What hi-jacked my world that night? Oh To a place in the past we’ve been cast out of Oh Now we’re back in the fight

We’re back on the train back on the chain gang

Circumstance beyond our control oh The phone, TV and The News of the World Oh

Got in the house like a pigeon from hell

And threw sand in our eyes and descended like flies

And put us back on the train back on the chain gang

The powers that be that force us to live like we do

bring me to my knees when I see what they’ve done to you

But I’ll die as I stand here today knowing that deep in my heart, they’ll fall to ruin one day for making us part

I found a picture of you Oh

those were the happiest days of my life Oh

like a break in the battle was your part in the wretched life of a lonely heart

but now we’re back on the train

back on the chain gang

Nobody’s perfect Not even a perfect stranger But oh what a gal She was such a perfect stranger

And you, the best in your field In your office with your girls and desk and leather chair Thought that time was on your side But not time the avenger

Nobody’s permanent Everything’s on loan here Even your wife and kids Could be gone next year

And with what you’ll have left You’ll be forever, under pressure to support her And her lover who looks strangely Like time the avenger

Time, time hear the bells chime Over the harbour and the city Time for one more vodka and lime To help paralyze that little tick, tick, tick, tick

Nobody’s perfect Not even a perfect gent When your properly took the A train I wonder where your manners went

You were standing at the station In your briefcase was your aftershave and underwear And can you hear the whistle blow? Sounds like time the avenger

Time, time hear the bells chime Over the harbour and the city Time to kill another bottle of wine To help paralyze that little tick, tick, tick, tick

Oh, Saturday night, everyone’s having fun I’m down at the Laundromat trying to get my washing done Like I’ve done before, time and time again Watching the clothes go ’round, another week sees its end

Watching the clothes go ’round Watching the clothes go ’round Watching the clothes go ’round Watching the clothes go ’round

Oh, I’ve been working hard, trying to make some money Would you like sour cream on your potato, honey? I’ve been kissing ass, trying to keep it clean Serving the middle class, yeah, it’s a clean routine

watching the clothes go round x4

There go the whites, getting whiter There go the colours, getting brighter There go the delicates through the final rinse There goes my Saturday night, Out cold without a fight

Watching the clothes go round x4

Show me the meaning of the word Show me the meaning of the word ‘Cause I’ve heard so much about it They say you can’t live without it

Welcome to the human race With its wars, disease and brutality You with your innocence and grace Restore some pride and dignity To a world in decline

Welcome to a special place In a heart of stone that’s cold and grey You with your angel face Keep the despair at bay Send it away, and

Show me the meaning of the word Show me the meaning of the word ‘Cause I’ve heard so much about it I don’t want to live without it I don’t want to live without it

Oh, I want love, I want love, I want love

Welcome here from outer space The Milky Way’s still in your eyes You found yourself a hopeless case One seeking perfection on earth Some kind of rebirth, so

Show me the meaning of the word Show me the meaning of the word ‘Cause I’ve heard so much about it Don’t make me live without it

I want love

Hush little baby Don’t you cry When we get to Tucson You’ll see why We left the snowstorms And the thunder and rain For the desert sun We’re gonna be born again

What’s important In this world A little boy A little girl

Hush little darling Go to sleep Look out the window And count the sheep That dot the hillsides And the fields of wheat Across America As we cross America

What’s important Here today The broken line On the highway

All the love in the world for you, girl Thumbelina in a great big scary world All the love in the world for you, girl Take my hand and we’ll make it through this world

Hush little baby My poor little thing You’ve been shuffled about Like a pawned wedding ring It must seem strange Love was here then gone And the Oklahoma sunrise Becomes the Amarillo dawn What’s important In this life Ask the man Who’s lost his wife

I went back to Ohio But my city was gone There was no train station There was no downtown South Howard had disappeared All my favourite places My city had been pulled down Reduced to parking spaces

I said’ A.O. Way to go Ohio

I went back to Ohio But my family was gone I stood on the back porch There was nobody home I was stunned and amazed My childhood memories Sort of swirled past Like the wind through the trees

I said A.O. Way to go Ohio

I went back to Ohio But my pretty countryside Had been paved down the middle By a government that had no pride The farms of Ohio Had been replaced by shopping malls And muzak filled the air From Seneca to Cuyahoga Falls

It’s a thin line between love and hate It’s a thin line between love and hate It’s a thin line between Love and hate It’s a thin line between love and hate

It’s five o’clock in the morning and you’re just getting in You knock on the door and a voice sweet and low says, who is it? She opens up the door and lets you in Never once asks where have you been She says “Are you hungry? Did you eat yet? Let me hang up your coat, pass me your hat” All the time she’s smiling, never once raises her voice It’s five o’clock in the morning and you don’t give it a second thought

It’s a thin line between love and hate x4

The sweetest woman in the world Could be the meanest woman in the world if you make her that way You keep hurting her, she’ll keep being quiet She might be holding something inside That’ll really, really hurt you one day

I see you in the hospital bandaged from foot to head In a state of shock, just that much from being dead You couldn’t believe the girl would do something like this You didn’t think the girl had the nerve But here you are, I guess action speaks louder than words

It’s a thing line between love and hate x4

She’s gonna fool you one day

I’ve been crying like a woman ‘Cause I’m mad, mad, mad like a man If you’d been in the SS in ’43 You’d have been kicked out for cruelty

I hurt you ‘Cause you hurt me So I hurt you ‘Cause you hurt me

I’ve been wonderin’ about your dependency Your idea of defiance is a modern day mystery Your arms and chest are cold When your back is on fire And the only time that you come clean Is when you’re talking to your buyer

I hurt you x4

Forget our philosophies That we admired when we were young And our popular points of view They can’t mean much Or something or anything If we can’t say “I love you”

Happy Birthday darling And thank you for the schooling Your correction mistress warned me Man, she wasn’t fooling Never trust a user with your television overnight Don’t try to paint your masterpiece under artificial light

I hurt you , cause you hurt me…….

He’s gone 2000 miles is very far The snow’s falling down gets colder day by day, I miss you The children will sing He’ll be back at Christmas time

In these frozen and silent nights Sometimes in a dream you appear Outside under the purple sky Diamonds in the snow ,sparkle Our hearts were singing It felt like Christmas time

2000 miles Is very far through the snow I’ll think of you wherever you go

He’s gone – 2000 miles Is very far The snow is falling down Gets colder day by day I miss you

I hear people singing It must be Christmas time I can hear people singing It must be Christmas time   Note: This song was written by Martin Chambers and I do not know what the lyrics are

It’s happening in your own backyard But finding it is very hard Sitting on the garden fence Knowing which is your size Just a case of common sense

Fast or slow, the law’s the law Doesn’t matter ’bout the truth at all The evidence before your eyes Your honour Countryman is honest So you’ll never hear the lies

Countryman is on the case Clearing up a big disgrace Your honour, your honour

It’s open to interpretation The recording of the conversation Taken out of context so they say Your honour Countryman will get there Make that always a way

It’s hit the fan, so pay the price We’re looking for the man with the right advice The hunted hunter’s gone to ground Your honour The end of the day the job is done But he don’t feel so proud

Clear it up and kick it in your face Your honour, your honour

I want you to love me That’s all I want from you I want you to love me one day I know I’m a peasant dressed as a princess But that doesn’t mean You have to take my clothes away If I could show you some happiness Then I would feel like a real princess That to me would be success My baby

I see you dancing A natural beauty You make this dive seem sublime You really get to the heart of the music You’re the poetry of time If there’s a method to writing a song How come I’m getting it wrong You write the beautiful songs Baby

C’mon, c’mon c’mon baby Take my hand, C’mon, c’mon c’mon show me To the loveland, to the Loveland

Can this really happen in this day and age? Suddenly – turn the page Like walking on stage My baby Hey

When I change my life There’ll be no more disgrace The deeds of my past Will be erased And you’ll forgive me And then you will come back Hold my hand and say “I still love you” When I change my life

When I change my life And all the scars have faded I’ll be someone you look up to Not excuse when your friends come around And you’ll want me Always to be there You’ll be proud to say “I’m with her” When I change my life

Everybody wants place in the sun, I believe Everybody wants to be in love with someone Everybody makes mistakes Everybody cuts his thumb Everybody wonders What the moon is made of

I want to forget every regret And all those rotten things that I put you through

When I change my life And the idiot me Leaves this town forever Leaves us to be Together for the rest of our lives Happily forever and ever When I change my life

Take a message to my love And don’t say where you saw me Seven men crossed the river And they took all the money

Colour the wind And search deep within And by the light of the moon Light of the moon Light of the moon We begin again

Secrets whispered in shadows While the village lay sleeping Guiding me to the answer Bang a drum and I’ll follow

Say they’re taking the children Oh, I think they’ve forgotten Does their innocence wander On its way back to my love

Dance If you will Dance On your Capitol Hill Dance If you can Dance Like a twentieth century man

Take the public by the throat Give ‘em a reason to give you a vote Take your audience up on stage Let them think you’re a sage, come on

Dance If you want Dance Like you’ve got a house to haunt Dance Like a freak Dance Like you needed it all week

Take your people by the hand Tell ‘em you’ll get ‘em to the promised land Take your woman in the heat of the night Make her think you’re right, come on

Dance Like a chimpanzee Dance In the land of the free Dance Like a Russian ballet Dance Like a funky situe’

Let ‘em know that you’re well-read Quote the things that Jesus said Lift your face and your whiskey neat To get you up on your feet, come on

Don’t you go away Come on, get close to me The hassles of the day Have made a real mess of me The moon is in the sky And the stars are out tonight They shimmer in the pools of your eyes In the moonlight

You’re so nice to touch Lovely to look at Touch, touch In the tradition of love

Hear the summer breeze All the night time’s listening Your eyes are sparkling now And their oceans glistening Sail upon a sea Of love filling the room Lilacs seem to be Everywhere with their perfume

Love, love Love, love Love, love

You can in a breath Blow the storm clouds out the sky A hurricane retreats In the blinking of your eye A flame within my heart Is ignited by your voice Come on, baby, now Let’s make love our final choice

Shri gouranga Jaya gouranga Gour, gour gouranga nam Gour, gour gouranga nam

Don’t get me wrong, if I’m looking kind of dazzled I see neon lights, whenever you walk by Don’t get me wrong, if you say hello and I take a ride Upon a sea where the mystic moon is playing havoc with the tide Don’t get me wrong

Don’t get me wrong, if I’m acting so distracted I’m thinking about the fireworks that go off when you smile Don’t get me wrong, if I split like light refracted I’m only off to wander across a moonlit mile

Once in a while, two people meet Seemingly for no reason, they just pass on the street Suddenly thunder, showers everywhere Who can explain the thunder and rain, but there’s something in the air

Don’t get me wrong, if I come and go like fashion I might be great tomorrow, but hopeless yesterday Don’t get me wrong, if I fall in the mode of passion It might be unbelievable, but let’s not say so long It might just be fantastic, don’t get me wrong

I remember you

I remember the first time we met I may be a sentimental fool Forever in your debt For something I cannea forget I remember you

I remember you I remember the first time we spoke Sound of your voice like a lover’s tongue Got in my ear when I’d just begun To wonder if springtime was through I remember you

How do we change so easily? You’ll always be a part of me I thought you’d never go It shows you what I know

I remember the first time we slept What a surprise to wake up to Someone I hardly knew From asleep to a dream come true I remember you

Hey baby, I wanna know How much did you get for your soul? You had the gospel when you were shackled to a tree Now you got your freedom, you sing for the money Soul, soul, soul, soul How much did you How much did you How much did you get?

Hey baby, well tell me please How much did you get that sleaze? Finally made it, baby, right up to the top Millions of kids are looking at you, you say “Let them drink soda pop” Soul, soul, soul, soul How much did you How much did you How much did you get?

Who’s got soul? From the African nation to the Pepsi generation Who’s got soul? Who’s got soul? It dwell from tree to sea, every living entity Share the super soul, we got super soul Who’s got soul? Who could think that you’re for real, a puppet in a cabaret To increase your wealth, baby, realize yourself

Hey baby, I wanna know From the ‘a-go-go’ to the disco, where did you really go? You finally made it, baby, you’re gonna make it rich As long as some poor bastard in Africa is lying in a ditch Soul, soul, soul, soul How much did you How much did you How much did you get?

She’s getting older yeah, she’s getting wise but a change has changed the girl gone’s the sparkle in her eyes she wants to be a good mother so she’ll do the best she can but what about the other what about the man?

Well it’s cold to leave a woman with family, on her own it’s chill factor to the bone

Resignation in her sighs is a sorry indication of how time can brutalise take away the hope and the will, will follow take away the faith and goodbye tomorrow

well it’s cold to leave a woman with family on her own it’s chill factor to the bone

She had her dreams too but how can she pursue her ambitions be they great or small

you took her wings and flew but remember when you’re through your rise was due to somebody else’s fall.

And when the hard part’s over and the kids have almost grown you’ll be their big hero whenever you make it home shower them with presents things she could never buy delight them with your stories about the great big world outside

but dig – it’s cold to leave a woman with family on her own it’s chill factor chill factor chill factor to the bone.

Let me inside you Into your room I’ve heard it’s lined With the things you don’t show Lay me beside you Down on the floor I’ve been your lover From the womb to the tomb I dress as your daughter When the moon becomes round You’ll be my mother When everything’s gone

And she will always carry on Something is lost, but something is found They will keep on speaking her name Some things change, some stay the same

Keep beckoning to me From behind that closed door The maiden, the mother And the crone that’s grown old I hear your voice Coming out of that hole I listen to you And I want some more I listen to you And I want some more

And she will always carry on etc

I used to live in a room full of mirrors All I could see was me Well I took my spirit and I crashed my mirrors Now the whole world is here for me to see I said the whole world is here for me to see Now I’m searching for my love to be Hey!

Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah!!!

Broken glass was all in my brain Cuttin’ screamin’ crying in my head Broken glass was all in my brain It used to fall in my dreams cut me in my bed It used to fall in my dreams cut me in my bed I said makin’ love was strange in my bed Hey!

All right Yeah yeah yeah

Nowhere to stumble Nowhere to fall Can’t find y’all See only sunshine All through the day Yeah yeah yeah

Love comes shinin’ over the mountains Love comes shinin’ over the sea Love will shine on my baby Then I’ll know exactly who’s for me Then I’ll know exactly who’s for me Until that time I still got a lot of groovy time Hey!

[from “The Living Daylights”]

Where has everybody gone? I’ve got this feeling, God, am I here on my own? Where’s my support now, where’s the ranks of the strong? In this faceless crowd, where can I belong?

Everybody’s gone insane to catch a plane to hold the heavens closer, oh They want the kingdom but they don’t want the king They want his throne There’s no time, there’s no time at all

Where has everybody gone? With great pleasure I sing your national song Because your beautiful land will soon be long gone And the ashes of your memoirs will be strewn across the lawn

Hack your face, save your case, reserve your place in the ever-after, oh Cause hallowed halls are lined with walls That are cracked by the myriads laughter There’s no time, there’s no time at all

Where has everybody gone? There’s no time, there’s no time at all You won’t survive and soon be long gone, gone Gone, gone, gone, gone, gone

If there was a man I could dream of I’d dream about a dream come true If there was a man I could ever love I’d wait a million years for someone just like you

All my life I have been waiting Never taking any chances, always hesitating Where’s the pay off, where’s the glory? Where’s the one I’m holding out for When’s he walking through the door the one that you walked through If he isn’t you?

If there was a man etc

Happy endings never find me I put all my fantasies and hopes of love behind me all my chances all fell through but If there was a man out there for me I wish it would be Someone who could love me too If someone was you

Let me stay one more day It would mean so much to me I won’t make a sound I’ll just hang around I’ll sit where the last one sat But oh no, I’d never do that

Take my mouth as far as you can see It stretches farther than I care to think Put me out of my misery If I could keep it shut I wouldn’t be in this rut With less chance than a laboratory rat Oh no, I’d never do that

You’re a master of illusion You say you do, but you don’t You think I will, I know I won’t

When I see you sitting there It sends a shock right through me I never thought an ordinary chair Could have such poetry I don’t deserve your time I haven’t got the tact I live above my means in fact Oh no, I’d never do that

Never do that Never do that I’d never do that

Empty me Like a dustman rids a rubbish bin Fill me up with glimpses of you And let the music begin Oh oh oh Take me to the altar

And let’s make a pact One we’ll never take back Let me prove that I’m true Let’s make a pact

Alter me The change could only do me good Others have tried to and failed I wish that somebody could Oh oh oh Do what no one can do

Lets make a pact One we’ll never take back Promise me you’ll be true Let’s make a pact

Take me to the world and let me wonder at the view Set me off in motion and let me dance After twenty years of doubt and then a week with you I’m ready baby, follow through

Cover me in dirt And leave me to the wind and the rain If I should ever hurt the one who made me human again Oh oh oh Take me to the altar

Let’s make a pact One we’ll never take back Let me prove that I’m true Let’s make a pact

They’re just millionaires They got the money, but who cares? They’ll never be like you and me Cause money can’t buy poverty They think they govern our affairs They’re just millionaires

When they pass us in their cars They look at us like we’re from Mars Those distant eyes look sympathetic We slash their tyres ‘cause we’re pathetic And we get paid for the repairs By the millionaires!

They’re just millionaires They got the money They got the money yeah! They’re just millionaires They got the money child They got the money yeah!

If they’d just leave us in their will We’d all be dressed to kill And burn our polyester flares With the millionaires!

How do I miss you? How do I miss you? When you’re gone When you’re gone

You silly Welsh git You were sold down the river Like a slave changing hands From master to master The leaves will turn brown And fall to the ground And another summer is gone Gone is the summer of you. oh

How do I miss you How do I miss you How do I miss you when you’re gone When you’re gone

It got so when I looked at you I did it for a laugh Now your laughter fills the room When I’m trying to take a bath When the chorus of the dawn Fills the valley with song Baby what could be wrong? My heart is breaking in two Oh

That’s the way, the mighty they fall Break their legs, and they don’t stand so tall

Bundled up and trussed up Were the goods to be delivered I stood in the doorway And cried and I shivered I be walking down the street To the carnival beat But I’m dragging my feet Because I’m hopelessly blue Oh

How do I miss you?

When you’re gone You’re gone

So much for banning the bomb The President’s wife is carrying a hand gun If you want blood sports for fun now They call me ‘The Hunter’ – better run now You hear a crack in the distance baby Your phoney mating calls resistance maybe Don’t smile – we’re gonna get you We’ll have your rifle off you too Oh, gimme a kiss And hold a candle to this

Foxy lady dressed to kill You say you won’t but you will What’s on your face and your breath Mama? You wear your glory or death mama But liberation’s on the way Every dog gonna have it’s day Pack up your rape racks and crush box out of hell Farmer in the dell Oh, please I insist Now hold a candle to this

Bring on the ecstasy! And the bliss Bring on my wedding day And everybody’s birthday Blow up the abattoir Detonate! We’re going home To where the buffalo roam

Old MacDonald had a farm, E I E I O And on this farm there was a cow

There’s a new generation From Osaka, Siam and Saigon The sailors mixed it on the shore They were making love and making war Well here’s a present for The Navy Same meat, different gravy Those chicks will find you, that’s for sure One, two, three, four, tell the people what she wore You’re American Miss Hold a candle to this Oh

Look at me, high upon the hill you could say, I’m on top of the world Baby, I’m blue all because of you I can see this city crumble all around me press me to your chest, block out the view Oh oh oh oh You made me some kind of criminal you put me outlaw because I loved you

In my time, one thing I’ve learned if you play with fire, you get burned

baby, it’s true I got burned by you

I put everything i had into a bag and trusted you to do what you didn’t do Oh oh oh oh oh

You made me some kind of criminal you put me outlaw, because I loved you

the first thing I think when I wake up – When can I see you? The last thing I think when I’m drifting off – When can I see you?

Oh look at me, I’m addicted still at first I refused- now I just swallow the pill baby, won’t you fix me like you used to?

I could spend my time in hell I might as well ‘cause hell is where I’m bound to dwell without you. Oh oh oh oh oh oh

You made me some kind of criminal You put me outlaw because I loved you

Your body is trouble , rarely at rest Running and wandering in sleeplessness The stars are majestic, peaceful and all But where in this room will a little light fall?

We all have to mourn and we all have to die But can you fall down on your knees to the spirit of life?

We’ve all lost something, just what I don’t know The body it trembles, the tears overflow Your breath comes and goes of its own accord Out of your lungs to speak a few words

Mothers and fathers, lovers and friends Parties and tantrums all come to an end Memories washed out like cans to the sea Lost in the joys of eternity

I saw death standing out by your car When I called you up a strange woman was there You lit a cigarette, she was dressed in black I’m still waiting for you to call me back

We all have to mourn and we all have to die But can you fall on your knees To the spirit Of Life.

I went out on the balcony In the middle of the night The hotel was dark except for just one light Television burning in the other room I couldn’t sleep so I put on some of your Hollywood perfume

I went out on the balcony And looked across the way Some guy was shadow boxing, he looked like Sugar Ray I was feeling dizzy, began to swoon Was it his punch or was it just your Hollywood perfume?

I feel like a fugitive escaped from my life Seeking refuge in the sensual heat These paper thin walls make me party to calls Of love wafting through the room The night jasmine bloom Of your Hollywood perfume

I went out on the balcony to clear my head I was burning up in my queen-sized bed Down on the strip beneath the billboard moon Teenage girls look for love in the Neon, sex and doom Of your Hollywood perfume

I went out on the balcony with your photograph I dropped it in the pool and that made me laugh You like your tan but you don’t like to swim Meanwhile I feel like I’m drowning in Neon sex and doom The night jasmine bloom Of your Hollywood perfume

I see him standing silhouetted in the lamplight I cross the street and I quicken my pace He cups his hands and he lights a cigarette I find myself in the bones of his face

It’s just the night in my veins Making me crawl in the dust again It’s just the night Under my skin, slipping it in

He’s got his hands in my hair and his lips everywhere Oh yeah! It feels good, it’s alright Even if it’s just the night in my veins

He’s got me up against the back of a pick-up truck Out of sight of the neon and glare We might as well be on a beach under the moonlight Love’s language reads the same anywhere

He’s got his chest on my back across a new Cadillac Oh yeah! It feels good, it’s alright Even if it’s just the night in my veins Even if it’s just the night in my veins

I’ve got my head on the curb and I can’t produce a word Oh yeah! I feels good It’s aright Even if it’s just the night in my veins x4

I’ll come in your car to talk business No business, no money talk Zero in on my full intention I think you got it ’cause you pulled up and stopped

If money is the root of all evil I’m begging at the feet of the Devil Talk to me please Money talk to me

Twenty gets you straight, forty gets you other Think of what a hundred could do I’ve been gifted with the thing that you want So who’s better than who?

Never underestimate a woman like me The kids have got to eat And man, that’s reality, you see Money talk to me

So deluded You think that I’m real You pass your hormones off as love For five minutes you feel

Now you can buy a squidgy little silicone sack But it won’t feed the world Like the ones that I pack naturally Money talk to me

Every time I end up waking up in some hotel without my set of keys coming to, remembering the way you turned me out when I was on my knees

you think that was ‘one up’ for you but i know I scored something too.

When i see the way you have to struggle just to do a little, simple thing I feel apologetic just because I’m not particularly suffering

So i let you take me down I’m like your rent a clown

When I saw my baby cry i knew that he loved me That was some great victory he cried because of me he hit me with his belt but his tears were all i felt When I saw my baby cry I knew He loved me.

When you try to cut me down and push me back if I attack your attitude I rise up to the challenge coz I like to taste the sugar of your violent mood Just like a stormy sea you’re natural poetry to me

When I saw my baby cry i knew that he loved me That was some great victory he cried because of me he hit me with his belt but his tears were all I felt When I saw my baby cry I knew he loved me

I knew he loved me

When we watch the children play Remember – when it was me and you Those were the days, The things we got up to! The funfair of danger That’s what set us apart We couldn’t wait for the real world To test the strength of the lion’s heart

Bring on the Revolution I wanna die for something Bring on the revolution Keep the pressure on – I wanna die for something Bring on the Revolution I don’t wanna die for nothing

Cats like me and you have got laws That they adhere to Laws outside the laws as laid down By those we don’t subscribe to The world is getting stranger But we’ll never lose heart We can’t just wait for the old guard to die Before we can make a new start

Bring on the revolution Keep the pressure on I wanna die for something Bring on the revolution I wanna die for something I wanna die for something Bring on the revolution I wanna die for something Bring on the revolution I don’t wanna die for nothing

For every freedom fighter I wanna hold on tighter To the hope and will you gave You were the brave, you were the brave

And one day When I hear your children sing Freedom will ring Freedom

When we watch the children play Remember, how the privileged classes grew And from this day we set out To undo what won’t undo Looking for the grand in the minute Every breath justifies, every step that we take to remove What the powers that be can’t prove And the children will understand why

All my dreams Still re-live you If this is what you left for me I forgive you Never do I despair When I kneel to say my prayers When slumber fills my head I’ll be visiting your bed

All my dreams Recollect you And so darling in a way Our love remains new Funny little things You touch my fingers and fondle my rings Then tenderly without violence We make love in perfect silence

Come, come into my room again Come, come again Oh come, come into my gloom again End this solitude again

I finally took that picture down I’d been staring at it for hours and hours Slipping in and out of consciousness But what I can’t figure out Why did you do that? Disappear on me like that? Oh, baby please, come back where I can touch you Right here where I can see you

Come, come into my room again Come, come again Oh baby come, come into my gloom again Break, break this solitude again

All of my dreams Of your affection Never have I known Such sweet perfection No drug induced bliss Could ever reach the heights of this Eternal and so pure Help me to endure To endure all my dreams

Oh, why you look so sad? Tears are in your eyes Come on and come to me now Don’t be ashamed to cry Let me see you through ‘Cause I’ve seen the dark side too

When the night falls on you You don’t know what to do Nothing you confess Could make me love you less

I’ll stand by you, I’ll stand by you Won’t let nobody hurt you I’ll stand by you

So, if you’re mad, get mad Don’t hold it all inside Come on and talk to me now

Hey, what you got to hide? I get angry too Well I’m a lot like you

When you’re standing at the crossroads And don’t know which path to choose Let me come along ‘Cause even if you’re wrong

Take me in, into your darkest hour And I’ll never desert you I’ll stand by you

And when, when the night falls on you, baby You’re feelin’ all alone You won’t be on your own

I’ll stand by you I’ll stand by you Wont let nobody hurt you And I’ll never desert you Take me deep into your darkest hour And l’ll never desert you I’ll stand by you

I’m a mother, treat me like a mother You want to suck on my breast, It’s no surprised you do I’m the source and the force to your life to, brother I’m a mother I understand blood and I understand pain There can be no life without it never doubt it I’m a mother

I gave you all my money to help the family But what you do to me -don’t humiliate me Remember, I’m a life-long member Oh, oh, oh, I’m a mother, treat me like a mother

In the middle of the night I be deep in a dream You fancy little company you only have to scream loud, brother Oh, oh, oh I’m a mother and I fake like a mother

I understand time and it isn’t on my side But to service mankind I have to suffer his pride Like a mother

You say your protection is proof of your affection If I need security, I’ll keep a gun on me Don’t, don’t barter with me, don’t barter with me

Little sacrifices, go straight to heaven But hunting season’s over, this is the 20th century Oh, don’t barter with me Oh, oh, oh, I’m a mother and I ache like a mother

If there’s a terrible crash and bodies thrown everywhere I’ll wrap them up and carry them, if someone has to bury them, brother Oh, oh, call upon mother

I’m the vessel of life, I got the trauma here to prove it When it’s time for me to labour for you everybody move it Like a mother

I drink Tequila And watch the game in the bar I don’t care who loses I don’t know who the teams are

We had our time But the bells finally tolled And my Ohio winter Was finally too cold

I was born with my hand in a fist And my eyes shut tight Any wonder that I cannae resist Punching blindly, in a fight First time I saw swans flying to the sun I wanted to be one

Like every mother’s son When I saw my life had begun I wanted to be someone Like my brother, and my one and only father And like every mother’s son

I was raised within a cause With a purpose to fulfil I was taught to defend what was mine And instructed not to kill My small mortal eyes can see eternity In the clouds that dissolve and then regroup endlessly

Like every mother’s son When a man showed me how to use a gun I wished I’d never need one Like my brother, and my one and only father And like every mother’s son

Everything in domesticity Assumes its role better than me I’m a displaced person whose culture let me down I raise my own daughters in a pornographic town

Like every mother’s son I’ve lost some and some I’ve won Now I’m waiting for a new dawn Like my brother, and my one and only father And like every mother’s son

I’m as solid as a rock throw me at the powers that be I’m as solid as a rock throw me at the powers that be I’m as user friendly as a lead filled glove

Rebel Rock me

I’ve got money in the bank come with me you can have it for free

I’ve got money earning interest in the bank come with me you can have it for free

I’ve got assets big as holes up in the sky

Rebel rock me

I’m as heavy as a crowd in east LA fling me at the oppressor and flee I’m as heavy as a crowd in east LA fling me at the oppressor and flee

I’m a seething, burning moving mass of love

The sun goes down, The sky turns black I can hardly wait for you I can’t believe the madness in Everything you do I used to dream In black and white Now I see the world In a different light

Your love colours, colour everything x4

Come into me Fill me and fill me Show me your colours, baby Your love colours

I slept in fear, And woke in pain ‘Til you came in close to me I was cold like frozen rain Your kiss melted me You speak your mind Just like a child Won’t be defined By when you smile

Your love colours x4

Now come into me etc

May God bless and keep you always May your wishes all come true May you always do for others And let others do for you

May you build a ladder to the stars And climb on every rung And may you stay Forever young

Forever young Forever young May you stay Forever young

May you grow up to be righteous May you grow up to be true May you always know the truth And see the lights surrounding you

May you always be courageous Stand upright and be strong May you stay Forever young

May your hands always be busy May your feet always be swift May you have a strong foundation When the winds of changes shift

May your heart always be joyful May your song always be sung May you stay Forever young

So your girlfriend wants to be a popstar And beat the charts out of me She wants to move a million units man Probably just to prove she can And after a couple of hits She’ll be buying a new pair of mitts I can see just where she’s heading She’s as predictable as Armageddon

Oh, they don’t make ’em like they used to They don’t make ’em like they used to No, they don’t make ’em like they used to You should have just stuck with me

Your girlfriend wants to be a popstar And live in Primrose Hill Well, she’ll join the meritocracy Get to meet all of rock’s aristocracy And be someone everyone knows Who all the designers send all their new clothes When she starts to look like Kylie Minogue She might even get her picture in Vogue

Your baby wants to be a popstar Probably just to spite me Well, she thinks it’s so easy to get to the top But a girl like that, she won’t know where to stop But when her most recent therapist Suggests that maybe she become a Buddhist She might even consider giving up red meat Man, you’re gonna look back to when your life was so sweet

Oh they don’t make ‘em like they used to No they don’t make em like they used to They don’t make em like they used to You should have just stuck with me

I play a good game but not as good as you I can be a little cold, but you can be so cruel I’m not made of brick, I’m not made of stone But I had you fooled enough to take me on If love was a war, it’s you who has won While I was confessing it You held your tongue Now the damage is done

Well there’s blood in these veins and I cry when in pain I’m only human on the inside And if looks could deceive make it hard to believe I’m only human on the inside

I thought you’d come through, I thought you’d come clean You were the best thing I should never have seen But you go to extremes, you push me too far Then you keep going ’til you break my heart Yeah, you break my heart

See I bleed and I bruise, oh, but what’s it to you? I’m only human on the inside And if looks could deceive make it hard to believe I’m only human on the inside

I crash and I burn, maybe someday you’ll learn I’m only human on the inside I stumble and fall, baby, under it all I’m only human on the inside

And the damage is done

Well there’s blood in these veins etc

We watch each other even when we sleep For some small protection It’s a promise we keep Love is hard to define It runs in circles round the mind But a circle ain’t a circle If it’s not complete

Oh, love me from the heart down If it hurts or if it’s bliss Love me from the heart down Reveal me with a kiss My senses must compete With a brain that lets me down Down, down

We satisfy each other But the hunger still remains You sink into my flesh like a knife When day comes to an end We take off all our clothes And stand naked face to face With real life

Oh, love me from the heart down Get me on the floor Love me from the heart down Go under and then come up for more Analytical patter Gives love the run around, around You can’t hold a theory Won’t you love me Love me from the heart down

We misconstrue intentions When there’s distance in between Longing hurts the teeth Like something sweet When you’re not here with me You become a memory This aching feels like some kind Of defeat

Oh, love me from the heart down Get me on the phone Love me from the heart down Lie and say you’re coming home True confessions need the make-up Of a clown, clown Smiles are deceiving Won’t you love me Love me from the heart down

If this is public transportation What are you doing here? Royalty and people like thee Should queue up in the rear

My patience has worn thin My tyres are gonna explode Yeah, yeah Every time I try to get close to you You throw nails in the road

This is a sticky situation Will require a measure of tact We just don’t like to mix it with y’ all It’s a cultural fact

My patience has worn thin My tyres’ about to explode But every time I try to get close to you You throw nails in the road

This is a clean-up job Everybody grab a mop You wanna further your position Well look what floats on top, on top

Well there’s class and then there’s class But we’re above all that The butcher and the baker and the thief and the witch And the aristocrat

My patience has worn thin etc

I walk the streets at night, under artificial light Looking for somewhere to live I’ve been on the East Side where a lady can reside But I’m waiting for you, waiting for you

In the falling rain Oh, heal me, heal me again

What’s the cost of fame? What’s in a name? Maybe, can you vibrate and clarify So that even lowly I can find the road That leads to you

In the falling rain Oh heal me, heal me, Heal me again

One more little heartache One more little heartache One more little earthquake Wash me down Wash me down

Ghostly memory come back to me Fill me and then take me to your grave I promise to behave And let me in the whole of you

In the falling rain Oh heal me heal me heal me again

When we meet again Just refer to me as ‘Back Then’ Or pretend not to recall Ever knowing me at all Or hanging round my door Begging for more

When you begin- playing to win That’s when the losers rush in And I, I got better than you At jumping the queue To get closer to seeing who’s who

A man without a home Is never alone Well just look what he’s got The whole parking lot In those unsheltered places There’s always other faces

Take mine for a start It’s like a modern work of art Disturbing and lacking in heart And I – got better than you At jumping the queue to get closer To seeing who’ who

It must be so wonderful Being you every day Oh it must be so wonderful Always getting your way

A common dialogue Is the best thing that you’ll get From the woman you call your wife So try not to forget To tear out and burn The things you unlearn

Your future exists In her shopping lists Please call your office

And I got better than you At jumping the queue to get closer to seeing Who’s who

There was a time you thought I was in love with you Well, think again you can’t read my thoughts You’re so pretty I’d like to break your smile in two You’re so correct I’d like to disconnect the dots

You’re such a child but you’re not innocent Another kid for rent.

Why did you send me roses? Save them for someone’s death The love you have to offer Is only baby’s breath

There was a timeI thought you were magnificent but you’ve got nothing to have or to hold You’re so pensive but your thoughts are insignificant

Wrap ’em up another 20 billion sold

You think you’re wild and know what danger means in your designer jeans

Why did you send me roses? Save them for someone’s death the love you have to offer Is only baby’s breath

I’d like to have you alone tonight and rearrange your mind I’d like to have you but I know I’d be wasting my time.

Why did you send me roses Save them for someone’s death The love you have to offer is only baby’s breath

You believed in me When you had nothing to gain You stood by me You walked out in the falling rain To find me Waiting in the shadows behind me

Baby please Please Won’t you do it one more time Do it one more time Do it one more time Please Won’t you do it one more time

You stayed when no one else would When I was delayed You understood I’ve done some low down things Alright but you said I was good I couldn’t forgive myself But you could

I know I’ve made you promises Then I forget I’ve let you down darling I’m forever in your debt In my darkest hour I’ve Turned you out But when the mood has passed You came back in spite of me Saying “This love, this love was meant to last”

Wont you do it One more time One more time With feeling

Legalise me Oh I want the legal right to be me Only me Legalise me Bail me, jail me but they’re never gonna nail me Pharmaceutically

I was sleeping like a baby in bed When I woke up to a voice in my head ‘We’re all outta rooms try down the road’ is what I said” I’m just a farmer and I grow marijuana

Oh, baby doll Can you tell that I like that? Oh, baby doll We’re gonna rattle your combinations Up and down

Legalise me Oh, I gotta gotta gotta feel free Really free Legalise me Wake me, shake me If they’re gonna come and take me Make it legally

I been campaigning for the rights of the meek I’ve been holed up in a tree most the week Hey sir your crush boxes are starting to leak They’re saying ‘never’ but we’ll wait here Forever and ever and ever and ever

And if I wanna shake my hair in the sun Don’t try to flail me for offending anyone I don’t take Prozac and I’ll never own a gun I’m just a farmer but I swear I’d never harm her

When you came into my room last night And took off all your clothes Did you think I would resist Letting you inside? Did you think I could resist you? My favourite Samurai

You swam across the bedroom Drunk on my champagne You got into the air Across the River Wye And pushed aside your headstone My favourite Samurai

Then you showed me something I didn’t know How to let go I was falling Through the Tivoli sky Expecting to fly Expecting to fly

When I stood beside your tomb last night Recalling how you rose Did you think I would persist Refusing to die? See how I’ve persisted My favourite Samurai

Si me dijeran pide un deseo Preferiria un rabo de nube Que se llevara lo feo Y nos dejara el querube

Un barredor de tristezas Un aguacero en venganza Que cuando escampe parezca nuestra esperanza

Biker they tell me that you’re a dangerous lover well that might be true oh, but I’d never ride with another maybe they’ve never had their arms around anything so wild and free

you bring the biker out in me.

I can’t understand it why people give you grief you play the one armed bandit like an outlaw with a belief to them it’s the norm for a man to conform to a Godless society

Because you’ve no interest in the struggle to obtain the status and bogus desires that drive most people insane you who have nothing have something that only the 1% could ever see

I fell by the way The reason you haven’t heard from me I just didn’t want to tell you Or see me this way Having fun with my new someone Circumstance, who would’ve guessed? Force my hand when I was homeless You just, wouldn’t understand If you saw me Holding his hand

I fell from your grace The reason you haven’t seen me here I just, I didn’t want to tell you to your face But I left clues you couldn’t refuse Obvious, your friends would see I knew you’d get the word eventually and I’d rather have them tell you ‘It’s just as well The bitch is gone’

I fell while you were away You leave a woman like that Anyone will tell you She’s gonna stray Well I confessed and you know the rest Promises you never kept Where were you baby? You overslept And when you hear that prison bell, think of me You’re not the only one

That’s not honest Nothing you’ve said Why don’t you tell someone Who’ll believe you instead? ‘Cause I got this feeling Is it what they call déjà vu? I’m nodding my head, yeah But I don’t believe you

If you lie to me again… If you lie to me again… If you lie to me again… If you lie to me again… If you lie to me again… If you lie to me again…

I don’t even care So there’s nothing to defend It’s so long-winded Like a story without an end This elaborate yarn You left behind, like a breadcrumb trail It’s too hard to find the way out Of your fairytale

If you lie to me again… If you lie to me again… And you say that you’re my friend And you take me to your bed As somebody else instead And I wonder where you’ve been And the other one began If you lie to me again… If you lie to me again…

Don’t take me there, oh, please, I do thee implore Spare me the details The entrails and the gore I can see there’s a point You want to drag me in To impress me and depress me With your web of sin

If you lie to me again… If you lie to me again… If you lie to me again… If you lie to me again… If you lie to me again… If you…

You’re always welcome To stop on by I’ll be there baby To get you high You’re thinking maybe This one’s for real You don’t know How good you fell

Chorus: Gimme some time Real good time Gimme some time Time Gimme some time Real good time Gimme some time Time

Come on in We can be free No one will be here No one will see It’s nobody’s business What we do You want me Baby I want you

Life is too tough To work all day What does it cost To earn your pay If the man is breaking your will He won’t reward you But I will

Along by the canal You can see the remnants of last night’s reverie As left by the local tenants But these aren’t the gifts they give free in shopping malls This is real life that’s sprayed across the tunnel walls

You know who your friends are You know who your friends are They’re the ones who want to see you go far You know who your friends are

The last time you tried to leave here for a working holiday You said your mother needed you two thousand miles away But no sooner on the tarmac you were met to be told We’ve been waiting for you You just can’t leave the fold

They’ll never let you go They’ll never let you know who your friends are Know who your friends are

They say that loyalty is just for those who’ve earned it Is that why they stole the sofa from your parking space and burned it You were hoping you could leave here with some teeth still in your head But your friends on curtain row would rather see you dead

I’m a very very complex person I try to improve but you see how I worsen I’ll do anything to make you adore me Or deplore me, but never ignore me

I got senses that I cannot control My stomach’s like a bottomless hole My desires command me like a slave I’m a knave, I can hardly behave

I’m a peacenik but I’m going off to war I couldn’t even tell you what I’m really fighting for It seems right; at least it doesn’t seem wrong I’m a mixed-up, fucked-up singer of a song

I refuse to keep a gun in my purse Imagine if I was feeling perverse The builders and the workers when they whistle and they shout I’d like to give them something to shout at me about

I’m a very very complex person I’m a very very complex person

Anyway I got a plan to give it all away I won’t need a suitcase on judgment day I’m a very very complex person…

Fools must die So it shall be Take your place in history Show your face Don’t be shy The world rejoices When fools die

They die, they must die They die, they must die Everybody gather round Watch them falling to The ground

Fools must die So it shall pass Bow your head Raise your glass Don’t ask when Don’t ask why Ask for mercy Cause fools die

They die, they must die They die, they must die Everybody gather round Watch them stumble to The ground

Fools must die One by one Indulge yourself As I have done As you are now So once was I Prepare for death Cause fools must die

They die they must die They die they must die Everybody gather round Watch them falling to the ground

You came to me, I was alone, Tried to drag me in to your danger zone. You told me things got right inside And showed me things I’d never tried. You got a hold, you wouldn’t let go, You lied and lied and lied It was a great big show. Everything about us looks wrong but I swear it feels right. (people talk) people talk, I hear them do it (they think think they know)they think they know, when I never knew it (you’re a gigolo) you’re gigolo I’ve heard it said. (I’ve got a sweet name)I’ve got a sweet name for you instead. They imagine, “what must give them a thrill?” They’ll never know for sure, but I will Everything about us looks wrong but I swear it feels right. Everything about us looks wrong but I swear it feels right. Whispering is rude in public places (its so obvious)it’s so obvious, written on their faces They think your taking me for a great big ride But you know whats more? they’re probably right I’m hoping on with you tonight… You take me up and let me down Don’t like my friends to come around. (if your not center) if your not center of the stage You sulk and rant and go into a rage. Ohohoh but I can leave at any time, But I’d miss the oh so absurd and so sublime. Everything about us looks wrong but I swear it feels right. Everything about us looks wrong but I swear it feels right. Everything about us looks wrong but I swear it feels right.

You don’t love me anymore I can feel it But I want you more than before So I conceal it Walk on, walk on baby Don’t look back This happy face is just a disguise Oh baby When love dies

Nothing breaks like a heart Nothing breaks like a heart Glass shatters, even cars fall apart Nothing breaks like a heart

When you walked out At first I celebrated But this footloose, fancy free stuff’s overrated

Oh I got my way Now I’m free to roam These tears of laughter are just lies Oh baby When love dies

Oh, oh, oh I feel so bad bad bad Oh, oh oh I’m so sad sad sad I wasn’t this shook in the L.A. earthquake How much can one heart break?

You don’t love me anymore I can feel it But I want you more than before So I conceal it Walk on, walk on baby Don’t look back This crumbling heart is no surprise

Oh baby, when love dies Nothing breaks like a heart Nothing breaks like a heart Glass shatters, even cars fall apart Nothing breaks like a heart Oh, nothing breaks like a heart Oh, nothing breaks like a heart Oh, nothing breaks like a heart

If I’d known then If only I had known What, where or when I would of kept you on the phone Hindsight is tough It’s so obvious Never enough for the two of us

I would of tried a little harder I would have cried a little louder I would have lied with more aplomb I, I, I, I, I, I, I should have known

When we made love Sometimes it was great Just once or twice I would have called it second rate Anyway the days passed by in peace I never though you needed More release

If I had…if, if, if I should have, I should have I could have, I could have Oh fuck, I really miss you I really miss you

I should have tried a little harder I should have cried a whole lot louder I should have lied With more aplomb I, I, If only I, I should have known

I’m the cleaning woman Here to clean up your mess I’m the clean up woman Here to clean up your mess I’m the cleaning woman Here to clean up your mess I’m the clean up woman Here to clean up your mess

Women think men belong in resorts We watch the children They watch the sports A man wouldn’t help us Even if he could While we clean up the mess He’s made of the neighborhood

Women refuse to witness the kill Of man’s safaris and his battles of will She washes the wound he sustains in his fight She cradles him in her arms all night

Woman is there At the end of the day She works as hard As a man can play She carries the blame She doesn’t deserve She bears his name When he loses his nerve

If it’s games you want I’ve played a few Let me say up front I’ll lose to you I can see you’re a beginner Well beginner’s luck runs out You think you’re a winner But let me tell ya The winning’s not what it’s all about You see, it’s about the losing Can’t rest until I’m losing

At first you feel hungry Then you’re thirsty too Then a desperate feeling comes over you You think you can beat What no one has before Then you start to cheat Before you know it You’re back for more

You see it’s about the losing Can’t stop when I’m at the top It’s about the losing Every time I win I have to start again Can’t rest, rest until I’m losing A bluff’s about as good as the getting will get You see in this neighborhood We’re all in debt

A little more money A little more fame Who amongst us, if anybody Wouldn’t risk it all To stay in the game You see it’s about the losing Can’t stop when I’m at the top It’s about the losing Every time I win I have to start again

Can’t rest, rest until I’m losing Can’t rest, rest until I’m losing Can’t rest, rest until I’m losing It’s about the losing It’s about the losing It’s about the losing

I’ve really made a fool of myself I hit the wall but it never bothered you at all Oohhh My pony bolted out too soon Left me howling at the moon

You are my saving grace (oo my saving grace) You put me in my place (you put me in my place) I see your smiling face (I see your smiling face) The clouds disappear, and blue skies fill the space You are my saving grace

I didn’t know what I was s’posed to be I tried to bluff, but I never offered you enough, Oohh Now I’m feeling the remorse I want you back because of course

Do you remember when, you gave your heart to me I want it back again, I want it back again Oh baby, Sweet baby

Won’t you reconsider me? Coz as anyone can see..

You are my saving grace (oo my saving grace) You put me in my place (you put me in my place) I see your smiling face (I see your smiling face) The clouds disappear, and blue skies fill the space You are my saving grace You are my saving grace

You are my saving grace You put me in my place I see your smiling face (I see your smiling face) The clouds disappear, and blue skies fill the space You are my saving grace You are my saving grace You are my saving grace

Miguel has set up home With a woman half my age A half-wit in a leotard Stands on my stage

The standards have fallen My value has dropped But don’t shed a tear Some walk like they own the place Whilst others creep in fear

Try if you can To walk like a man But if you don’t come near You’ve got to fly like an eagle Prowl like a lion in Africa Leap like a salmon home from the sea To keep up with me You’ve got to walk like a panther tonight

The old home town just looks the same Like a derelict man who has died out of shame Like a jumble sale left out in the rain It’s not good It’s not right

Where did you leave your self respect You like look like a reptile Your house is a wreck Your existence an insult And stains that are suspect Cover your clothes

There was a red brick road where I grew up on And a pretty stone wall around a fragrant lawn And fish in the pond that sparkled in the dawn But it ain’t no more it’s all gone gone gone

Chorus: Whoa Ram it, cram it, grand slam it Break up the concrete Prod it, sod it, metal rod it Break up the concrete Whack it, thwack it, line back it Break up the concrete Shake it, bake it, earthquake it Break up the concrete Break up the concrete Break up the concrete

Now don’t tell me it’s progress ‘cause that’s just a lie And don’t even try to come up with an excuse why We was so busy worrying ‘bout them dropping the bomb We didn’t notice where our enemy was really coming from

That old train keeps blowing Through the centre of this town It restores my faith When the chips are down It don’t take no passengers Since the streets got rearranged But that whistle still blows It’s one thing never changed

The boy I was loving Had to say ‘so long’ Go back to a world Where I don’t belong It affected me so You could say I was deranged But that whistle’s gonna blow It’s one thing never changed

Speak to me Speak to me again Speak to me Speak to me again

That old train keeps blowing I can hear it in the night I hold on to myself It’s gonna be all right People come and go Like cars changing lanes But that whistle’s gonna blow It’s one thing never changed One thing never changed

What am I gonna do today? Walk to the newsstand, Check out the warzone, Check the listings, see what’s good on, Oh, there’s one I’ve been wanting to see. Anyone here up for a movie? I am.

Nobody tells me I can’t, Nobody tells me I shan’t, No one to say ‘You’re doing it wrong’, I’m at my best, I’m where I belong, Alone. Yeah, I like it.

Now I’m out prowling the streets, With the poets and the Greeks and the deadbeats, I’m taking my time, sitting on park benches, And all the glamour it all starts down here, This is where the trends begin. Life’s a canvas and I’m on it.

Nobody tells me I can’t, Nobody tells me I shan’t, No one to say ‘You’re doing it wrong’, I’m at my best, I’m where I belong, Alone, I like it, yeah, I like being alone,

And the other thing I like to do, Go to the graveyard and hang out with you, And have a smoke and practice my autograph, Then sit back and re-read your epitaph and it says: ‘Don’t you laugh as you walk by, For as you are so once was I, And as I am so you shall be, Prepare for death and follow me,’

Alone. Yeah, I like that. I like being alone, Yeah, what are you gonna do about it?

Nobody tells me I can’t, Nobody tells me I shan’t, No one to say ‘You’re doing it wrong’, I’m at my best, I’m where I belong, Alone, Yeah, I like it. I like being alone. What are you gonna do about it? Hmm? Absolutely fuck all, Yeah. I’ll do whatever I want.

I’m in love with a man, He’s in love with the road. It’s no surprise, it’s no riddle, A roadie’s wife plays second fiddle, To the razzle dazzle on the stage, She has to be a widow and a sage.

Roadie man, Taking music to the people, Any way he can. Propping up the falling stars, He’s there to bring light and sound and power, He’s the man who’s standing in the tower, He’s my long gone, doggone roadie man.

Christmas time’s a lonely time, Even when the church bells chime, Hark, the herald angels sing ‘boo hoo’…

What happens on the bus stays on the bus, It don’t mean nothing, or require a fuss, A vow of silence is the code. That keeps the backline on the road, Whatever happens, happens – has to be, But don’t rely on domesticity.

Roadie man, Taking music to the people, Any way he can. Propping up the falling stars, He’s there to bring light and sound and power, He’s the man who’s standing in the tower, He’s my long gone, doggone, He’s my gol darn, long gone roadie man. He’s my long gone, doggone

He’s my gol darn, long gone, He’s my doggone, long gone, Road man, Roadie man, roadie man, roadie man…

Promises and champagne and cigars, Dizzy heights of passion’s ecstasy, These are just some things that can’t be ours, And will never be,

Restaurants and cinemas and taxis, Walking through the city hand in hand, Those are things for lovers, only lovers, Do you understand?

Oh no, we’ll never, We’ll never be together, Never, never, We’ll never be together,

I miscalculated what the price was, Falling for a pretty face can cost, Wondering for hours in the terminal I’m lost, The colour of your eyes are like a palette, A thousand shades of blue are mixed up there, Drowning in a wave that pulled me under, I’m running, I’m running…

Never, We’ll never be together, Never, never, never, We’ll never be together.

Let’s get lost, let’s get lost, Let’s get lost, let’s get lost.

Well, I wear it like a charm, A tattoo on my arm, Your name in a horseshoe, Talismans and such, I rely on them to touch, And get close to you, Well, I try just a little, Try just a little, Keeping my fingers crossed, Oh, I get high just a little, High just a little, Now I’ve found you, Let’s get lost, let’s get lost, Let’s get lost, let’s get lost.

Riding on a bus, Thinking about us, And what you’d be saying, If you and me were real, And you feel what I feel, And not just playing,

Ooh, I get high just a little, Try just a little, Keeping my fingers crossed, Ooh, I get high just a little, High just a little, Now I’ve found you, Let’s get lost, let’s get lost, Let’s get lost, let’s get lost.

It’s inexplicable, irrefutable, Now it’s begun. Ooh, it’s undeniable, non-negotiable, You’re the only one,

He likes her better than me, Everybody here tonight could see, He liked her, better than me, I couldn’t even get in the dance, In fact, I didn’t stand a chance, Clearly, it was her not me,

Ooh, that’s the way I’m going down, Throw in the towel, that was my worst round, Ooh, I’m outclassed, pound for pound,

I can’t compete on the street, I haven’t got the heat, Can’t keep up with the beat, Like I should, In this neighbourhood, Thought I’d nothing to prove, Then the bouncer made me move, And that little piece of fluff, Moved in and ran with the groove,

Ooh, that’s the way I’m going down, Watch me now, as I hit the ground, Ooh, take a look around. You see me?

Ooh, that’s the way I’m going down, Put a padlock on my door, they’re closing me down, Ooh, I’m in the best hotel in town…

Sometimes, do you ever get the feeling it’s all over? Sometimes, do you ever get the feeling?

No one understands me, Like my baby, No one understands, Like that man. He knows, I will never leave him, No one understands me, Like him…

When the morning comes, I go to him, He’ll be standing in the sun, Hair gone blonde, He’s waiting, For the waves to reach as high, As the blue-eyed sky.

He knows, he knows, My love overflows, Like rivers to the sea, He comes and goes, My love it grows and grows, And doubles when he leaves,

When the evening light, Starts to dim, I’ll be entering another starry night, Without him, The waves, And the moon and I rely On his blue-eyed sky,

He knows, he knows, My love it overflows, Like rivers to the sea, He comes and goes, My love it grows and grows, And doubles when he leaves, And doubles when he leaves,

No one understands me, Like my baby, No one understands, Like that man, Jiva spirits never die, In his blue-eyed sky.

I don’t expect flowers, I don’t expect rings, I don’t expect promises, Or sentimental things,

I just expect you, To be the man you are, I just expect you, To be the man you are,

I don’t expect sobriety, I don’t expect stealth, I don’t expect you’ll ever be a man, Defined by your wealth,

I just expect you, To be the man you are, I just expect you, To be the man, you are,

When a woman loves a man, She’ll do anything he asks, She’ll do anything she can, When a woman loves a man,

I don’t expect accolades, I don’t expect prizes, I don’t expect to ever see you babe, In different guises,

I just expect you, To be the man you are I just expect you, To be the man, you are

Be the man you are, Be the man you are, Be the man you are, Be the man you are, Be the man you are.

When do I get To see you again? When do I get To see you again?

I wait, I wait, I wait…

One more week, One more year, One more day,

Time passes slow, When you watch every minute, The clock has two hands and a face, But I can’t find you in it,

Love, what a travesty, It sure made a fool out of me, I used to scoff at such lovers, Now I’m tossing and turning, In twisted covers

Walking the dog, Singing my blues Passing the synagogue, Paying my dues,

I wait, I wait, I wait.

I hate myself, I hate myself, I hate myself For being jealous, I hate myself, I hate myself, I hate myself For things that you can’t see, I hate myself, I hate myself, I hate myself For using other fellas, To blindside you, To get inside of me.

Believe me I’m not saying that I’m proud, To undermine and sabotage your scene, I wouldn’t want to say some things out loud, But everybody does it, and you know what I mean.

I hate myself, I hate myself, I hate myself For backing the wrong horse, I hate myself, I hate myself, I hate my masquerade Of black and blue, I hate myself I hate my reckless, phoney Self-destruction course, And coming last, conceding second best to you,

And if on Judgement Day, I’m told to make my way, To take up lasting residence downstairs,

I’ll look to see if others, Who backstabbed their own brothers, Got a lighter sentence, Showing mercy and repentance.

I hate myself, I hate myself, I hate myself I guess I’m just too smart, I hate myself, I hate myself, I hate myself In body and in mind, I hate myself, I hate myself, I hate these Perversions of the heart, I hate myself upfront, I hate myself From behind.

So take my hand, To the witness stand, I deserve the worst, My heart is gonna burst, So validate me Hate me where it hurts, I hate myself, I hate myself, I hate myself I hate myself, I hate myself. I hate myself, I hate myself, I hate myself I hope that you do too, I hate myself, I hate myself, I hate myself I hate myself. But most of all I hate myself, Hating you.

Goodnight, Oh my sweet love, Let me cover your heart with a rose, Sleep tight, My deceived love, Well you saw only thorns I suppose.

Funny how you look so peaceful, No more anger no more fear, On your cheek there shines a single tear,

I’m the one to mellow you, Forever I will treasure you. Hold your hand and pull you through, When the going gets too rough. I’m the one to mellow you, Break the spell that’s killing you. I’m so willing just to see you through, ‘Cos death is not enough, ‘Cos death is not enough.

Goodnight, Oh my sweet love, Let me shine the light of a million loves on you.

We tried so hard to make some sense of it, But the world is just a joke. I promise you I know what’s gone and broke.

I’m the one to mellow you, Forever I will treasure you. Hold your hand and pull you through, When the going gets too rough. I’m the one to mellow you, Break the spell that’s killing you, I’m so willing just to see you through…

I’m the one to mellow you, Forever I will treasure you. Hold your hand and pull you through, ‘Cos death is not enough, ‘Cos death is not enough.

I-I-I-I-I Am a mass of devotion, I-I-I-I-I Am a Holy commotion,

I just want, I want, I want To see your face, I just want, I want, I want To change your place, Lift your veil up!

I just want, I want, I want To lead the blind, I just want, I want, I want To free your mind, Come on baby,

I just want, I want, I want, To see the light, I just want, I want, I want, To dance all night, Be my baby,

When the walls come tumbling down, And the love shines all around, And the dogs of war Come around no more, No more rape or torture or mutilation One word, one love, One humanity, One word, One love, One humanity, Ooo ooo

Baby Jesus Yes love

For the buzz, I can’t get no relief You’ve reduced me to a liar, a liar and a thief Love, oh, love, I can only prove you’re real By the scratching and the fever Proof for a believer Is how a shot of love makes you feel

And you think that you don’t care And you think that it’s your choice But you’re hypnotized and follow The puppet master’s voice And you know you can’t forget And you know you gotta get

The buzz, I can’t get no relief You’ve reduced me to a liar, a liar and a thief Love, oh, love, I can only prove you’re real By the scratching and the fever The proof for a believer Is how a shot of love makes you feel

And you know you can’t forget You know you gotta get

Makes you feel Makes you feel Makes you feel Makes you feel

The demons got the better of you That’s what demons do The demons can’t destroy, nothing can Destroy the soul or rise above the lightning of a music man

We had a rich and wild adventure Life in love and melody Battle and we ruled it Recorded every felony Think that they can have you They’re deluded and confused

The demons got the better of you (better of you, better of you) Well, that’s what demons do (demons do, demons do) The demons can’t destroy, nothing can Destroy the soul or rise above the lightning of a music man

Oh, and the soul of a man wrestles with the pack Seems like an advantage when they’re going to attack And nothing can can reign, above the music in the heart

It was always in the cards no use denying it Devil offered something, you were up for trying it Stashed it in the grooves, now we’re dancing to the beat

The demons got the better of you (better of you, better of you) Well, that’s what demons do (Better of you) (Better of you) (Demons do) But demons can’t destroy you, can’t destroy you, nothing can

The justice swift In name and soul and spirit The justice swift And we’re standing by, we’re standing by

After you finish off Your fear of death returns And then you drop the ball Because love, it burns

See you duck and dive So you don’t get hit That’s how you stay alive But just a little bit

Well, she don’t know Back in Reno, Nevada He keeps his profile low Turf accountant daddy

Hey baby, you wanna dance? Come here

The things you criticized That’s what you’ve become AWOL, living on the beach Just a bum

And those little white lies Me and her as well Them roving eyes They kiss and tell

Now you’re undercover That must be tough Hiding this week’s lover Nothing’s never enough

Well, she don’t know Back in Reno, Nevada He keeps his profile low Turf Accountant Daddy And she’ll never know In Cincinnati He’s never gonna show The turf accountant daddy

See how she enters The room like a diva If you said she was damaged I wouldn’t believe ya Laughing and joking, a real superstar

Oh, you can’t hurt a fool Well, don’t even try Because genuine fools Don’t play by the rules And she Won’t reconsider Whoa, oh, oh, you can’t hurt a fool

The first thing betrays A fool is her tongue Slipping and tripping And coming undone But something is missing Something ain’t right

And a fool never gives it away And a fool, don’t believe what she’ll say A fool never puts a foot wrong She’s living her dream and singing her song

Look at her now, she’s centre stage Too old to know better Too young for her age Mixed up as a litter of dangerous breeds

Oh, oh, you can’t hurt a fool Well, don’t even try ‘Cause genuine fools Don’t play by the rules And she Won’t reconsider Oh, oh, oh, you can’t hurt a fool Whoa, oh, oh, you can’t hurt a fool Whoa, oh, oh, you can’t hurt a fool

Sunrise, landscape, I portrait it to ya Abstract cubist and specialist view A delicate line, a bolt shone a blind Once the brush hits the canvas, there’s no turnin’ back

I didn’t know when the paint would dry Kept goin’ back for another try I start at the bottom, I dig at the top I didn’t know when to stop I didn’t know when to

I think I captured you in spite as I was But you couldn’t see it but only because My first attempt stank with doubt I grab my coat and find the door and make my way out

Well you see a fraud and no one else knows A catwalk phenomenon, the emperor’s clothes Our faithful lightnings but something ain’t right I painted over you and kept me in blue lights

I didn’t know when the paint would dry Kept goin’ back for another try I start at the bottom, I dig at the top I didn’t know when to stop I start at the bottom, I dig at the top I didn’t know when to stop I didn’t know when to

Standing on a rooftop Overlooking a park Eyes are glowing In the dark

The smell of horses lingers in the air It feels like something else is out there

Maybe love is in New York City Fluorescent streets might lead me to it I’ve been to Barcelona, Lima, and Hong Kong If it was here, I never knew it If it was here all along

The clouds are low And cast a misty spell As if they’ve got A story to tell

A constellation overhead A cross like an ancient gift Something led me here

Is it ever too late? To do what’s never been done Things change and they’re never quite the same For anyone

Never understandin’ But now that people told me This city owns its own mess Like arms still hold me

I just heard traffic rushin’ past Everything goin’, goin’ too fast Everything goin’, goin’ too fast

When you walk, when you walk When you walk the junkie walk Like you talk, like you talk Like you talk the junkie talk Here’s the list, you can lie Look your mother in the eye Steal her pills, make her cry Every junkie has to die

When you walk, when you walk When you walk the junkie walk Like you talk, like you talk Like you talk the junkie talk Here’s the list, you can lie Look your mother in the eye Steal her car, her guitar Every junkie has to die

Thank you for your dedication ‘Cross the street in the dirty rain Though you said your true vocation Will be coming back again

When you walk, when you walk When you walk the junkie walk Like you talk, like you talk Like you talk the junkie talk Here’s the list, you can lie Look your mother in the eye Steal her purse, and what’s worse Every junkie has to die

See them on the avenue Nothing more to tell or do Preying like the living dead Or dancing in and under his bed

When you walk, when you walk When you walk the junkie walk Like you talk, like you talk Like you talk the junkie talk Here’s the list, you can lie Look your mother in the eye Steal her keys, if you please Every junkie has to die

Walk Talk Lie Die

Walk, walk, walk, yeah Raise our dead, walk, yeah Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

When you walk, when you walk When you walk the junkie walk Like you talk, like you talk Like you talk the junkie talk Here’s the list, place your bet No, a loser won’t regret Don’t you fret, or deny Every junkie has to die

Well I didn’t want to be this lonely Though losing you was a relief From a life with one man only Devoid of morals or belief

But I didn’t want to be this lonely No, I didn’t want to be this lonely No, I didn’t want to be this lonely No, I didn’t want to be this lonely

I’m still not sure I did the right thing To forfeit danger for good sense But in my mind you’re like a cash till Breaking dollars into cents

Hey Hey Lone-lone-lonely Hey Hey Lonely

You’ll find somebody else to suffer And get to know your selfish ways And I’ll feel pity for the next one When you start to ruin her days

But I didn’t want to be this lonely No, I didn’t want to be this lonely No, I didn’t want to be this lonely No, I didn’t want to be this lonely No, I didn’t want to be this lonely No, I didn’t want to be this lonely

Crying in public’s an unfortunate thing A woman in love is a delicate thing And a woman who’s sad for no reason at all Will be crying in public, in the car, or the mall Crying in public, crying in public

She’s on the train, alone there, she sits Sobbing her heart out, falling to bits On a park bench on a sunny day When a woman’s distressed, you best look away If she’s crying in public, crying in public

Feminists claim that we’re all the same But I don’t know a man who’s felt the same shame

She might look a million or only ten cents When mascara runs, there’s no recompense Aristocrat, popper, or the bourgeoisie All know what it feels like when life’s misery Means crying in public, crying in public

Knowing that everyone sees it revealed When the heartstrings are pulling you into a field You run through the cornrows and find nowhere to hide Then all of a sudden it bursts from inside And you’re crying in public, crying in public Crying in public, crying in public Crying in public, crying in public

I must be going through a metamorphosis Pre-senile dementia or some kind of psychosis I don’t even care about rock and roll All my old favourites seem tired and old My whole collection now feels like a waste I’m losing my sense of taste

I must be going through a huge transition I noticed last night at an exhibition I found myself feeling nostalgic and sad Like the best of the culture’s been had Beardsley, Rothko and the modern S.Clays I’m not interested in art these days

I must be going through a terrible shift You say ‘elevator’ and I call it a ‘lift’ We speak the same language But neither do well Spout utter nonsense about fish to sell I’m losing my sense of smell I’m losing my sense of smell

I must be going through the motions at best I thought of you so much that it caused me unrest But I realise should you bother to call I’d probably just leave the phone to ring off the wall The beginning, the middle, the end must be nearing Or maybe I’m losing my sense of hearing I’m losing my sense of hearing

I’m not scared of you I’m scared of me right here I’m scared of taking stuff I give up every year

I’m not scared of your dark eyes They mesmerise and soothe But I don’t mess with burning coal or anything I can’t control

Chorus: A love to make the day go by Like a gentle breeze A love to make the difficult disappear with ease A love like ones I’ve read about or heard about in song A love like that might come to me but never for too long

I’m not scared of your lovely mouth It’s your voice gets in the way Saying ordinary things that float on air and stay

I look down at your fingers Imagine them entwined In mine, and then I look away Afraid that I might find

I’m not scared of you I’m scared of what could be Like certain drugs – one taste and then you’re never free To wake up every morning only one thing on my mind To satisfy a hole I’m pretty sure I’ll never find

Domestic silence has led to violence I’m afraid, I’m afraid, I’m afraid, afraid every day Domestic silence comes in many places I, I, I, I have one of those faces

Chorus: Domestic silence is making me cold I’ve told you that before And all I do for you Do you feel it too? Do you feel it too?

Domestic stuff, that’s what we got I know it don’t seem like a lot But when you pan it out There’s a little bit of gold This is where the story gets old

It’s blue one day and black the next As if I’ve been hexed I’ve been hexed, I’ve been hexed

Domestic silence comes in many places Well I have one of those faces

Your long blonding hair of heavy salty sea Like a curtain when it closed over and above me Blocked the vicious sun like the wings of passing gulls Empty, you held nothing Hollow as them washed up shells

Chorus: I woke up this morning with the Copa on my mind Those days of cryptic signals I was sad to leave behind A scarf tied to a shutter no one else would look to find Oh I still wake up in the morning with the Copa on my mind

Sitting on the rock that looked onto the ocean Talking to the waves as they brewed a magic potion Calling them like faithless dogs to your commands and whims While the crashing on the rocks rose to the sky like ancient hymns

You knew it was the end as you watched me from the gate I waved my boarding pass and didn’t hesitate ‘Security!, security!’ I took off my shoes Turned around and you were gone

The promise of love I still remember The Orlando hotel in late November

Snow on the ground So cold and so white Your arms did surround my mind that night

The promise of love Excitement unbridled No path up to heaven could feel more entitled Lighted and guided From darkness and sorrow Turned sadness to joy And the past to tomorrow The promise of love The promise of love

The promise of love the dizzy light head The best of humanity in one word you said Mystery spilling The firmament high Spinning and turning The stars floating by The promise of love The promise of love

The promise of love The hope and the pain The cycle of birth The endless refrain When will I see? When will I see? When will I see, see you again? The promise of love…

Love rules and everybody knows it But not everybody shows it Not everybody shows it I had a love, but jealous vanity Meant that love could never be So I set myself free

Chorus: I’m a divorcee But I feel like a widow A merry, merry widow A merry, merry widow I’m a divorcee But I feel like a widow Now there’s no one in the middle I’m a merry, merry widow

He was manly Good-looking and strong But he treated me wrong He treated me wrong He thought love was competitive like sport He wasn’t my sort So I left him at the port

A bunch of myths, a bunch of tales To take the wind out of our sails They even say that we must die I don’t believe it, that’s a lie

To live forever, that’s the plan The longest living mortal man With a soul that can’t be perished With a song that’s always cherished

Chorus: We don’t have to get fat We don’t have to get old We don’t have information That we have to withhold We’re as free as the bikers were when they were thin We don’t have to fade to black Let the sun come in

A lovely day, a perfect sky Fluffy clouds way up high Angelic voices in the air It’s all up there, it’s all up there To live forever that’s the plan The longest living mortal man With a soul that can’t be perished With a song that’s always cherished

Think big – think big things It ain’t illegal Open up and spread your wings Fly like an eagle

I think sometimes I’d been better off been born blind Then I wouldn’t have these dark images run through my mind

Lust and greed and anger and violence within reach Full dark would seem like sunrise on an Ibizan beach

And the things I see that others see while looking at their phone Disturbing lost childhood dreams and being all alone

The joy of laughter, innocence Light-hearted interaction Crushed beneath the force of the addict’s satisfaction

Chorus: Look away, look away I challenge you to try Look the other way And look somebody in the eye And while you’re at it please consider taking me along I tried to look away but the pull was much too strong

And words that better never should Have been spoken at all Are written in the toilets Of every school and Nursery wall

Your house is on fire It’s a crying shame From San Francisco to Sydney There’s no rain

In your case it’s ‘victim’ You just can’t get a break Everybody is against you It’s a feeling you can’t shake

Chorus: See ya, see ya (your house is on fire) Wouldn’t wanna be ya (your house is on fire) See ya, see ya (your house is on fire) Wouldn’t wanna be ya (your house is on fire, fire)

The others let you down They counted you out The referee got to 8 You lost the ’bout

Your so-called friends Threw in the towel After years of camaraderie Living cheek to jowl

A dark murky place Is all you’ve got to now You’re the last one in the race It’s over, take a bow

How many years, 20 or more… Dedicated was I Indebted, indentured Repairing the roof Washing the floor I dreamt of the world but I never ventured Chains round my ankles Locks on the door The shackles that bound me don’t any more

In the end I let it go Maybe it’s best, just let it go

Was I even good at it? I’m not even sure I just did the job and kept my head down I fooled myself thinking that my aims were pure A full veil covered the face of a clown Hooked up to a plough I tilled the earth I buried a few and to some I gave birth

Chorus: In the end I let it go Maybe it’s best, just let it go The changes came fast but the torments were slow Let it go, let it go

A person, a gender, a human soul What kind of career means a life in a cage? One day I could hear a distant bell toll Without emotion, no joy, no rage I took just enough to see me well gone My tiny space vacant I left before dawn

Gather round, you’re all invited Past and present, just alighted

Every hue, the broken prisms And the smallest of organisms Vainglorious…

Touch the man and catch the women Some have sank and some are swimming

Heads in hands and hands on faces History fails and time erases Vainglorious…

You’re invited, one and all Here’s how to show them Ten foot tall Without a body, just a word You’re never seen but man you’re heard

Gather round ye humble bums Russian vodka, Cuban rums Raise a glass say “ Lach-ey-dah” To your health and blah, blah, blah Vainglorious…

I was in my prime A lucky dog was I Everything was going my way The apple of many’s eye I took my chances and I won I gambled and stayed ahead I never once looked back Or had my fortune read

Chorus: Now I think about you daily But it only makes me sad Things that got away I treated you real bad Now each morning when I wake up It’s you that’s on my mind You never can get over Losing those you did unkind I think about you daily

Time is like a hammer It comes slow and then comes fast And things that are too delicate Are never gonna last The time you took from me I never saw it enter Too distracted by a pretty face I lost you and my centre

So let it go and move on down That’s my advice to me But I never could take good advice It was ne’er my cup of tea I’ll have to live with knowing You never knew how much I saw you like a rock I couldn’t move or touch

Exciting new additions to the Popular Artist Series at the Tanglewood Music Festival bring a parade of classic rock, contemporary pop, and R&B stars to the Koussevitzky Music Shed between June 20 and Independence Day, supplementing several more previously announced dates in July and August. New additions to the Shed lineup include  Roger Daltrey  with KT Tunstall, Brandi Carlile, and  Jon Batiste , as well as  John Fogerty and George Thorogood on tour together and  Jason Mraz  with the Boston Pops conducted by Sean O’Loughlin.

The Tanglewood season kicks off on Thursday, June 20 at 7 p.m., pairing classic rocker  John Fogerty  with Special Guests George Thorogood and the Destoyers and Hearty Har. As lead singer and guitarist of Creedence Clearwater Revival, Fogerty won a Grammy and was inducted into both the Rock and Roll and Songwriters Hall of Fame. Fogerty is touring with Thorogood, whose high-energy boogie-blues sound made him a staple 1980s rock radio. Their highly anticipated “Celebration Tour” marks a significant milestone as it's the first time Fogerty is performing his songs since acquiring ownership of his extensive song catalog. Hearty Har features Fogerty’s sons Shane and Tyler.

The Who’s founding lead singer  Roger Daltrey  returns to Tanglewood on Saturday, June 22 at 7 p.m. with Very Special Guest KT Tunstall. Daltrey, who starred in 1973 and 1975 films by Ken Russell (Tommy and Lisztomania), last performed in the Shed in 2018 with the Boston Pops and Tommy in Concert. Inducted to the Rock and Hall of Fame with The Who, Daltrey has released ten solo studio albums and was awarded a CBE by Queen Elizabeth for his service to music and charity. In crafting a completely new show, Daltrey presents not only Who hits but also Who rarities, solo hits, and other songs from his incredible near 60-year career, performed with a new semi-acoustic rock-based band. He will also share some anecdotes from his life in and out of music by way of a Q and A. The Grammy® nominated Tunstall burst onto the music scene with her 2004 multi-platinum debut, Eye to the Telescope, which spawned the global hits “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree” and “Suddenly I See.” Tunstall last performed at Tanglewood in 2019 with Squeeze.

As previously announced, two-time Grammy winners Kool & the Gang will bring their R&B, funk, soul, and disco hits to Tanglewood audiences for the first time on Sunday, June 23 at 2 p.m. Releasing 26 studio albums since forming in 1969, the group has earned seven American Music Awards and 31 gold and platinum records. Joining them are the R&B/soul trio En Vogue, who headlined last summer’s July Fourth Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular with original members Cindy Herron and Terry Ellis alongside Rhona Bennett .

Five-time Grammy Award-winning and Academy Award-winning singer, songwriter and composer  Jon Batiste  will perform solo on Friday, June 28 at 7 p.m. Nominated this year for an Academy Award for Best Original Song, “It Never Went Away,” recorded for his 2023 Netflix documentary American Symphony, Batiste made his Tanglewood debut in 2021 with the Boston Pops. He won an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award in 2021 for Best Original Score for the Disney-Pixar film Soul.

Eleven-time Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Brandi Carlile returns to Tanglewood on Sunday, June 30 at 6 p.m. Known for spanning musical genres from country to folk to rock and admired for her activism, Carlile has released seven studio albums since her self-titled breakout in 2005 and has won two Children’s and Family Emmy awards. Her 2021 memoir Broken Horses debuted at No. 1 on the New York Times nonfiction bestseller list. She made her Tanglewood debut in 2022 with Indigo Girls who will be back this August with July Collins and Rufus Wainwright .

The final new addition being announced this week is two-time Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter and Songwriters Hall of Fame Honoree  Jason Mraz ,who will make his Tanglewood debut with the Boston Pops on July 2 at 7 p.m. Mraz released his eighth studio album, Mystical Magical Rhythmical Radical Ride(featuring the single “I Feel Like Dancing”) in 2023 and placed second on Season 32 of “Dancing With The Stars,” which aired live on ABC and remains streaming on Disney+. Mraz previously performed the role of Dr. Pomatter in the hit Broadway musical Waitress. The Pops will be conducted by Sean O’Loughlin,Principal Pops Conductor of the Victoria Symphony and of Symphoria in Syracuse, NY.
