Wildlife Tours & Vacations

  • Ways to travel

Get closer to nature, the Intrepid way.

From Borneo’s rich jungle ecosystem to the islands of the Galapagos , our small group tours take you to the very heart of nature all over the world. Marvel at elephants as they’re silhouetted against an African sunset, watch chimpanzees swinging in the treetops above you, and come face to face with animals you’ve only ever read about or seen on TV in the wilds of Costa Rica. With incredible local leaders guiding the way and wildlife experts accompanying you on game drives, informational walks, informal sessions, and educational talks, our trips offer an unforgettable chance to observe these captivating creatures in their natural habitat, all while staying in a range of accommodations almost as memorable as your animal sightings - think safari lodges and wilderness camps.

But, before you take out your camera, we ensure that any interactions are done responsibly, and with the greatest level of respect. We believe that wild animals should be viewed – without our interference – doing what they do best: living in the wild.

Supporting wildlife

Not only does our entire range of wildlife trips promise to give you unforgettable animal experiences, but they also directly support the conservation of wildlife and the people who take care of that wildlife.  So, you can rest assured knowing that the money you spend by travelling with us is reinvested into the protection of the wildlife you see and the communities you visit like the jewellery workshop run by a team of women in Zambia that donates funds for anti-poaching patrols.

Local expert-led tours

Is your lemur knowledge almost non-existent? Do you have any idea about the intricacies of Borneo’s jungle ecosystem? Don’t know the orangutans from the chimpanzees? On an Intrepid trip, you don’t have to figure it out on your own. Every wildlife trip includes at least one local wildlife expert – from park rangers knowledgeable about mountain gorillas to indigenous people with a special connection to land - to take you on guided walks, conduct informal sessions, and participate in educational conversations.

Range of experiences

Traditional Game Drives, boat safaris, and nature walks are all par for the course on one of our wildlife trips but at Intrepid, our itineraries delve deeper to provide you with the whole, unique picture. Incorporating a range of different opportunities for travellers to experience the world’s wildlife such as a visit to a Wildlife Forensic Laboratory in Zambia where officials investigate wildlife crimes (just like CSI but for animals!) and learning firsthand about Antarctica’s ecosystem from your onboard marine biologist.

Responsible travel & conservation

We are not only giving back through offering safaris that make a difference but also partnering with conservation projects on the ground to raise awareness and important funding through the Intrepid Foundation.

Animal welfare

At Intrepid, we believe that it’s our responsibility to help preserve the planet for the next generation of travelers, as well as for the communities – and animals – that call these places home. That’s why we’ve worked with World Animal Protection  to create a set of guidelines each and every one of our trips follows.

Our animal welfare pledge

We’ve also partnered with the team at Blood Lions as a commitment to actively working towards a solution to lion exploitation by signing their ‘Born to Live Wild’ pledge.

Visiting animals

We only visit facilities involving wild animals in captivity if the reason for the facility directly helps, and is in the best interest, of the animals involved. For example, rescue centers operating with the highest animal welfare and conservation standards possible.

Visiting the MandaLao Elephant Conservation in Laos

Being a wildlife-friendly traveler

From doing your research to never using animals as a photo prop, there are a few easy ways to become a wildlife-friendly traveler . Join Intrepid co-founder Geoff Manchester and Lek Chailert, the founder of Elephant Nature Park in Chiang Mai, to find out more about Intrepid's ban on elephant rides and what you can do to help protect wildlife on your travels, or check out the partnerships between The Intrepid Foundation and various conservation organizations around the world.

How we help

We actively discourage the participation of travelers in any activities that exploit wild or domestic/working animals. Lately, there’s been a rise in animal-related incidents around the world, and it doesn’t sit well with us. That’s why we have this toolkit in conjunction with World Animal Protection, with the hope that it will help the tourism industry rebuild more ethically during the COVID-caused travel shutdowns.

Park & conservation fees

Did you know a portion of all national park fees (included in your trip price) go back into the conservation for the parks? In some countries, this can be a considerable amount and goes towards park upkeep, wildlife rehabilitation and protection, and funding for park rangers.

Become a Citizen Scientist

Contribute in a very real way on your trip to Antarctica by undertaking scientific studies, recording cloud cover with NASA, participating in the ‘Happy Whale’ initiative (taking photos of whales’ flukes and uploading them to a special database), and conducting seabird surveys.

Our WWF partnership

Embark on an Antarctic adventure with WWF , a conservation organization working to protect endangered habitats and stop climate change, and learn about their non-invasive whale research project from onboard scientists.

Giving back

Our wildlife trips are specifically designed to include local communities, businesses and NGOs that are working to support the conservation of wildlife, or the people protecting the wild.

Meet the experts

Man in a red jacket leaning up against an icy ledge

Alex - Antarctica Expedition Leader

Alex has long held a fascination with the natural world and polar regions. A graduate of Cambridge in Natural Sciences, Alex had been a polar guide for over a decade and is the co-founder of the Polar Citizen Science Collective, an organisation devoted to harnessing the research and data collection power of polar tourism. When not on a ship he can usually be found with skis or sticky rubber on his feet.

Man looking at the camera and smiling with lush greenery in the background.

Twongyeirwe - Head Ranger (Uganda)

Growing up in a family with a conservation background, Twongyeirwe quickly developed a dream of becoming a wildlife ranger, working with mountain gorillas in the forests of Uganda. He's been living that dream for 16 years (and counting), learning about gorilla behaviours, tracking their movements and passing on that knowledge to passionate travellers just as awestruck by the majesty of these animals as he is.

Woman crouching on the ground and smiling at the camera

Jessica - Naturalist Guide (Galapagos Islands)

Jessica grew up surrounded by sea lions, sea turtles, iguanas, amazing landscapes, and friendly people on the Galapagos Islands so it's no surprise she turned to a career teaching people about the diversity, endemism, and the marine life of the region she's loved since she was little. When she's not working, you can find her scuba diving, snorkelling and exploring as much of this magical Ecuadorian world as possible.

Woman wearing a white jacket staring off into the distance

Eva – Citizen Science Coordinator (Polar)

Eva is a polar scientist, with a particular passion for marine mammals. Her love for whales led to her graduating at the top of her class with a Master's in Polar Science from the Scott Polar Research Institute at the University of Cambridge. Researcher, Naturalist, Photographer, Educator, Surveyor, Skipper and Wildlife Officer, Eva has travelled extensively throughout all 7 continents, but her heart remains in the polar regions.

Wildlife FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join a wildlife trip.

Trips on or before 31 December 2022

If your Intrepid trip starts on or before 31 December 2022, you must provide proof of full vaccination against COVID-19.

If you are unable to be vaccinated for medical reasons, you may apply for an exemption. Exemptions will be assessed on a case-by-case basis. To apply, you must provide a medical certificate from a medical professional.

Children under 18 are exempt. Children aged between 5 and 17 years old must provide proof of either vaccination, recovery or a negative COVID-19 test.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises). However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travellers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

How safe are wildlife tours?

At Intrepid, the welfare of our people and our travellers is our highest priority, and we never put tours in a potentially harmful or dangerous position. To ensure that all travellers are safe while trekking or visiting wildlife conservation areas, there are a set of rules and regulations that everyone must observe at all times, which you'll be briefed on when necessary. Both your leader and the professional wildlife expert that accompanies you on specific activities such as gorilla trekking, will be happy to answer any questions you might have and make sure everyone's obeying safety precautions.

Do I have to be fit to join a wildlife tour?

Our wildlife tours range from having a lower physical rating (2 out of 5 stars) to a higher physical rating (3 out of 5 stars) which indicates that you should have a reasonable level of fitness to be comfortable throughout your trip. Most wildlife trips visit at least one national park so you can expect to participate in a couple of walks or longer hikes.

Am I guaranteed to see gorillas on my trek?

Animal movements can be unpredictable so we can't 100% guarantee that you'll see gorillas on your trek. Having said that, it's highly unlikely not to. You will be accompanied by a gorilla tracker on your trek and they'll have specific knowledge on how to find the gorillas and where they might be so you don't have to worry about a thing.

What’s the difference between trekking gorillas in Uganda and trekking in Rwanda?

There's not a huge difference between gorilla trekking in Uganda and Rwanda when it comes to actually seeing the animals, but the terrain of both countries varies. Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park has a more open and less dense landscape than the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in Uganda so it can often feel easier to trek through. Uganda also experiences more rain and this can make tracks slippery and harder to navigate. Another difference is that the permit for gorilla trekking in Rwanda is more expensive than in Uganda and this can deter budget-conscious travellers.

What vehicles do you use for Game Drives in Sub Saharan Africa?

The type of vehicles you'll travel on during your Game Drive is dependent on the style of your trip (basix, original, comfort, or premium) but all trips will use a 4x4 or alternate vehicle for at least one of those rides so you have the best opportunity to experience the wildlife from a unique perspective. If you want more details, check out the trip notes/itinerary information for your chosen trip.

When travelling on an Intrepid wildlife trip, how does my money support local conservation efforts?

Regardless of the style, every single one of our wildlife trips directly supports the conservation of wildlife or the people protecting the wildlife. A portion of any National Park or Game Reserve entrance fee (which is included in your trip price) is also fed back into protecting and conserving the park's natural and cultural heritage.  This money is crucial to safeguarding these habitats for wildlife to breed and survive together with its surrounding local communities. Our wildlife trips are also designed to seek out and support local projects, communities, and businesses that are actively working to protect wildlife, and educate and empower local communities to be custodians of conservation.

Will I get the opportunity for a range of different wildlife experiences on my trip?

Absolutely! Our trips feature a whole heap of fun activities such as Game drives, nature walks, and boat safaris, as well as unique experiences such as visiting a Wildlife Forensic Laboratory in Zimbabwe (which is exactly what it sounds like - a unit investigating wildlife crimes) and sitting down to dinner with a local park ranger where you'll learn about life in the wilderness and their special relationships with the mountain gorillas (guaranteed to be one dinner conversation you've never had before)!

Will I get the chance to learn from a local wildlife expert during my trip?

You'll have access to your trip leader who already has an impressive base of knowledge about the countries visited in the itinerary, and the local flora, fauna, cultural, religious, and social aspects associated with them but we also use additional local guides and wildlife experts who have a deeper and more specific knowledge about the places you go to and the animals you see. This is to add to your overall experience and make sure you're getting the full, well-rounded picture so expect to spend some time with wildlife veterinarians, park rangers, naturalist guides, and conservation researchers. For some trips, you will be accompanied by these experts for the entire duration, such as on our Antarctica departures where there's a naturalist and marine biologist onboard.

Which islands should I visit in the Galapagos to see the wildlife?

There's a good chance you'll see a wide variety of animals on any Galapagos Island since there are over 300+ different species that inhabit this archipelago. It's the sheer diversity and variety of life on land, in the air and under the water that makes the Galapagos such a drawcard for nature and wildlife lovers and each trip will give you the opportunity to experience as much of it as possible.

See below for some of the animals known to frequent the Galapagos Islands:

  • Sea lions are found across all islands.
  • Penguins are found across Santa Cruz, Santiago, Isabela, Fernandina, Floreana, and Bartolome islands.
  • Giant tortoises are found across Santa Cruz, San Cristobal, Isabela, and Floreana islands.
  • Green sea turtles are found across all islands.
  • Land iguanas are found across Santa Cruz, Isabela, Fernandina, Plaza Sur, and North Seymour islands.
  • Flamingoes are found across Santa Cruz, Santiago, Isabela, Floreana, and Rabida islands.

Do I need travel insurance to join a wildlife tour?

Absolutely. All passengers travelling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

For more information on insurance, please go to:  Travel Insurance

Are Intrepid's wildlife trips accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. However, we’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them towards the most suitable itinerary for their needs and where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Photo Expeditions

  • Photo Expeditions are led by accomplished photographers and instructors  who are also professional naturalist guides—wildlife experts who understand animal patterns and behaviors, and who know how and where to position you for the best photo opportunities.
  • While all our trips feature small groups, Photo Expeditions travel with even fewer guests , to ensure unimpeded access to the best shots,  plenty of room for your gear aboard our vehicles, and the utmost in flexibility to pursue photo opportunities as they arise.
  • Slower pacing and longer days in the field allow patience to pursue the shots that require it. We often rise early and linger through sunset to capitalize on the best light.
  • Some Photo Expeditions also include  extra weight allowance on select flights to accommodate equipment—a key inclusion in certain destinations, especially when you compare allowances for African safaris.
  • You'll get all the personal attention you need from our outstanding photographer guides, who provide one-on-one coaching tailored to each guest’s interests and ability.
  • Photo Expeditions also include special training and workshops on everything from composition and lighting to editing and post-processing techniques.

Arrive Cuiabá

You will be met on arrival for the transfer to your hotel in Cuiabá. Gather this evening for a welcome dinner and briefing at Gran Hotel Odara .

Cuiabá / Alta Floresta / Cristalino State Park

Transfer to the airport for your flight to Alta Floresta. Upon arrival, a drive and a boat ride will take you into the stunning 460,000-acre Cristalino State Park. Located in the highlands of the southern Amazon River Basin, Cristalino is strategically situated to preserve a huge swathe of rainforest, acting as an effective buffer between the timber extraction and cattle ranching to the south, and the virgin areas to the north. Your home base for the next two days is Cristalino Jungle Lodge , on a 30,000-acre private reserve connected to the park. It is known for being one of the richest places in the Amazon for observing birds, mammals, butterflies and orchids in a primary forest environment. Gather for sunset drinks with a view over the pristine Cristalino River flowing right in front of the lodge. Dinner and overnight at Cristalino Jungle Lodge .

Cristalino State Park

The lodge’s reserve contains a great variety of medium- to low-altitude eco-zones, allowing for great diversity (even by Amazonian standards) of wildlife. From predators like the Jaguar, Harpy Eagle and Giant Otter to herbivores like the Capybara and Agouti, all the organisms which took thousands of years to evolve and which make Amazonia unlike any other biome in the world are still alive and doing well here. Its location near the junction of two rivers—one a “White-water” and the other a “Black-water” river—gives the reserve a combination of two different soil types which furnish a staggering variety of trees, orchids and bromeliads. 600 bird species are known to live in the region, including many endemics. Among these are the Rufous-capped Nunlet, Chestnut-throated Spinetail, Manu Antbird,Peruvian Recurvebill and Ornate Antwren, as well as many species of parrots, puffbirds, and manakins. Mammals seen most frequently are the diminutive Pantanal Marmoset, White-whiskered Spider and White-nosed Saki Monkeys, Brazilian Tapir, and the Greater Fishing Bat. Cristalino is also one of the best areas in Brazil to observe Green Anaconda, largest of all constricting snakes.

Take in all the area has to offer by hiking on the reserve’s many trails, boating down the Cristalino River, and climbing the 50-meter observation tower for a stellar vantage point over the whole area. Dinners and overnights at Cristalino Jungle Lodge .

Cristalino State Park / Alta Floresta / Cuiabá / Porto Jofre

Today is an adventure in boats, cars and airplanes. Return by boat and car to Alta Floresta for your flight back to Cuiabá. Continue by car along the Transpantaneira, a raised-dirt highway, into the northern Pantanal with frequent wildlife stops along the way to marvel at Marsh Deer, Capybaras, Crab-eating Foxes and eye-catching birds. The concentration of wildlife builds throughout the drive as you head into the heart of the Pantanal, culminating in a spectacle of birds, Capybaras and caiman by the time you reach your accommodations this evening at Hotel Pantanal Norte .

Porto Jofre

The area around Porto Jofre is undoubtedly the best area to see Jaguar, the largest cat in the Americas. Jaguars remain elusive and hard to spot so perseverance and a healthy measure of luck are required. The hotel is ideally located to allow for two full days of immersion into this wildlife-rich wetland paradise. While Jaguar sightings remain the grand prize, you’ll see howler monkeys swinging across the canopy, bands of South American Coati hunting for food, and large groups of Capybara, always entertaining to watch. You’ll be surrounded by the sights and sounds of bright, colorful birds such as the Hyacinth Macaw, Black-hooded Parakeet and Plush-crested Jay. Enjoy lunch back at the hotel with afternoon boating excursions along the Cuiabá River. Watch for Jaguars coming to the river banks in search of food and water. Birding highlights include Jabiru, Pied Lapwing, Black Skimmer and Yellow-billed Terns. Dinners and overnights at Hotel Pantanal Norte .

Porto Jofre / Caiman Ecological Refuge

After breakfast, set off on your charter flight into the southern Pantanal, the world’s largest floodplain. The 130,000-acre Caiman Ecological Refuge was once part of a large beef cattle ranch in the Pantanal, and has since been transformed into an enterprising land management model combining the traditional “Pantaneiro” cattle ranching system, conservation programs, and ecotourism. It includes a 14,000-acre protected reserve covering a great variety of habitats that harbor many of the diverse species of the Pantanal, which is home to the highest concentration of wildlife in the Americas. Overnight at Caiman Lodge  within the reserve.

Caiman Ecological Refuge

Once a year, the mighty Paraguay River floods its banks, inundating an area ten times that of Botswana’s Okavango Delta. As the floodwaters recede in the dry season, this ever-changing mosaic of lagoons, shallow wetlands and higher islands of deciduous forest sets the stage for one of the world’s greatest wildlife spectacles.

Herds of Capybaras, largest of all the world’s rodents, graze along shores lined with Yacare Caimans, amidst throngs of storks, herons and ibises. At dawn, the surrounding woodland rings to a deafening cacophany of woodcreepers, Guira Cuckoos, antbirds and flycatchers, with Toco Toucan yelping from the treetops and noisy flocks of Turquoise-fronted Amazons winging overhead. Huge Hyacinth Macaws, the avian epitome of the Pantanal’s wilderness, are delightfully numerous in copses of palms, while areas of higher ground are home to the spectacular Giant Anteater, Greater Rhea and the peculiar Red-legged Seriema.

Of all the denizens of this watery wilderness, none is more sought-after than the Jaguar. Using detailed local knowledge of the resident population, you’ll track the cats by vehicle and on foot, in the hopes of seeing and photographing this largest of American felids. Ranging from northern Mexico to central Argentina, Jaguars are rarely encountered anywhere else, but occur in the Pantanal in their highest density on Earth. The combination of the refuge’s open, savanna-like terrain and years of formal protection from hunting brings experiencing the Americas’ most charismatic predator into the realm of possibility.

Caiman Ecological Refuge / Campo Grande / Depart

Depart Caiman early for the drive to Campo Grande and depart on late-afternoon flights homeward.

Hop Aboard a Ferry to These Uncrowded National Seashores

Spot wildlife en route and experience tours of historic homes or forts.

fire island

Amy Brecount White,

You know about our national parks , but have you heard about the country’s 10 national seashores? A part of the National Park Service system, these areas preserve coastal areas — on the Atlantic, Pacific and Gulf coasts — that have vital natural significance. In addition, they offer fun recreational options such as hiking, birdwatching, fishing and beachcombing. Many include ever-shifting barrier islands that help to protect the mainland from storms by absorbing the impact of waves, wind and storm surges. Most are sparsely inhabited and provide unspoiled habitat for species of the sea, land and air, including endangered birds and sea turtles.

To reach these six coastal gems, take a ferry to unwind and enjoy the waterfront view. “You have a chance to see wildlife the minute you leave the ferry departure point,” says Nate Toering, the chief of interpretation and education at Cape Lookout National Seashore. You might see birds such as osprey and terns, or spot dolphins.

Once on these seashores, you can stroll the often-uncrowded beaches and tour many historic lighthouses that helped to protect passing ships from danger. Several islands offer historic homes or forts to explore, and most allow camping, whether in campgrounds or backcountry. The park service’s park-specific apps may offer guided audio tours. Note: The ferries and tours mentioned have service contracts with the park service.

a ferry is taking people to an island

Fire Island National Seashore, New York

Located about 50 miles east of New York City , Fire Island National Seashore encompasses a 26-mile section of this barrier island that’s also home to many small communities. A 30- to 45-minute ride on three different ferry services ($20-$34 round trip) will take you to separate parts of the island, depending on what you want to see. Park admission is free.

“Three hundred and thirty bird species can be found on Fire Island throughout the year,” including piping plovers, American oystercatchers and sanderlings, says Nick Clemons, chief of interpretation, education and volunteers. He also recommends visiting the Sunken Forest, a rare maritime forest with 300-year-old holly trees growing behind established dunes. Visitors can climb 182 steps at the historic 1858 lighthouse for views of the city skyline on a clear day. The park service recommends that ferry passengers take water taxis ($10-$30 per person) to visit different island areas.

a lighthouse

Ocracoke Island, Cape Hatteras National Seashore, North Carolina

You can reach Ocracoke Island, most of which is part of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, on ferries run by the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The Hatteras car ferry is free, takes 60 to 75 minutes, and is first come, first served. The Swan Quarter and Cedar Island ferries ($30 per vehicle round trip, $6 per biker) take more than two hours and require reservations. In the summer, the Ocracoke Express passenger-only ferry ($15 per person round trip, $2 per biker) runs daily from Hatteras to historic Ocracoke village, which traces its roots to the early 1700s. From there take a free, 30-minute tram to tour this charming town of locally owned businesses or rent a bike or golf cart to explore.

ARTICLE CONTINUES AFTER ADVERTISEMENT

In town, peek inside Ocracoke’s still operational 200-year-old lighthouse, which was vital to ships navigating this constantly shifting coastline known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic.” Beyond town, permits are required for off-road vehicles in the seashore; and surf fishing for red drum or spotted seatrout is popular along the beaches. Park entrance is free, and you can visit the Ocracoke ponies that are penned and cared for by the park service.

view of a beach along the ocean

Cape Lookout National Seashore, North Carolina

Located in the “crystal coast” of North Carolina, the barrier islands of this seashore and most others “almost move and breathe as living things over time,” says Toering with Cape Lookout. Take the 20- to 45-minute passenger ferry ($24-$55 per person) from Harkers Island or Beaufort for horse watching, beachcombing, fishing and camping. It’s free to access the seashore.

Holland America Line

Up to $200 onboard credit on select cruises

When you land at Shackleford Island, “there may literally be a welcoming party of horses either at the drop-off point or perhaps further down the beach,” says Toering, referring to the seashore’s “biggest draw.” He also recommends shelling for Scotch bonnets and whelk varieties, particularly after a storm. Designated as an international dark sky park, this seashore offers excellent stargazing and ranger-led nighttime programs. Although the 1859 Cape Lookout lighthouse is under renovation and not climbable, visitors can check out the original lightkeeper’s quarters and admire the tower in its undeveloped setting.

There are no concessions on the islands, only water from March to November, so bring your own drinks and food and carry out trash.

a forest

Cumberland Island National Seashore, Georgia

Take the 45-minute ferry ($40 round trip for adults, $38 round trip for those 62 and older; $20 per bike, fat tires recommended, reservations needed) to this historic and wildlife-rich island reachable only by boat. Purchase the entrance pass ($15 per person) at the ferry office and check out the museum there first. Guided tours showcase island highlights, including the 22,000-square-foot Plum Orchard mansion, once a Carnegie-family property; the historic First African Baptist Church in the African American settlement area; and the marshes and maritime forest.

The 2.5-mile round-trip hiking or biking excursion from the Sea Camp drop-off to the post-fire ruins of the 1884 Dungeness mansion is popular. Or explore the 17 miles of undeveloped beach to shell and watch for wildlife. There are no concessions on the island, only water and limited restrooms. Some tours match certain ferry arrival times. Rangers offer guided tours of some sites.

Fort Pickens Road is seen from atop Battery Langdon

Gulf Islands National Seashore, Mississippi and Florida

Straddling Florida and Mississippi, these Gulf of Mexico barrier islands offer 160 miles of coast and miles of hiking and biking trails. From Pensacola, Florida, take the 45-minute Pensacola Bay City Ferry ($30 per pass for adults, $24 for seniors, bikes free) to the Fort Pickens area. Park service rangers offer interpretive tours at this 1834 fort, mainly on weekends. Visitors can explore 13 historic structures and a 7-mile multiuse trail, swim, fish from the fee-free pier or buy food there. The ferry also takes passengers to Pensacola Beach.

From Gulfport, Mississippi, take the one-hour ferry to Ship Island ($44 round trip, $42 for adults 65-plus) to enjoy undeveloped, wide beaches or explore Fort Massachusetts, a Civil War fort that offers living history demonstrations. The beach has lifeguards and food and drink options, along with umbrellas and chairs to rent.

Ranger Stephenie Wade recommends climbing both forts for beautiful views of the islands you don’t expect. Both destinations offer developed campgrounds, and keep your eyes out for plentiful wildlife, including dolphins, turtles, seabirds and alligators. Several seashore areas require a $15-per-person entrance fee.

a beach with waves crashing onshore

Padre Island National Seashore, Texas

Though you can drive to this 66-mile-long barrier island along the Gulf of Mexico, you can also take the free, 10-minute Port Aransas car ferry to Mustang Island and then drive to Padre Island to get into a maritime mood. Once you arrive at this “hidden treasure,” says Kelly Taylor, a ranger and public information officer, you can “really step back and you’re off the grid.” Unlike many others, this seashore allows camping on the beach, and the site has a rich cultural heritage as a former ranching site and a stop on Corpus Christi’s World War II American Heritage City Trail, as a former bombing practice ground for pilots. The seashore is one of the few U.S. nesting sites for endangered Kemp’s ridley sea turtles. After gathering the eggs to care for them, as is the park’s tradition, the rangers publicly release hundreds of baby turtles four to seven times during the summer. Monitor social media for release updates.

“This is a birders’ paradise during the spring and fall,” Taylor says. Bird lovers might spot crested caracaras, pelicans and painted buntings. Don’t miss Laguna Madre, a rare hypersaline lagoon that draws birds and where fish, shrimp and crabs thrive. During the spring and fall, visitors might see migrating monarch butterflies and dragonflies, particularly in the coastal prairie habitat. The park gets hot in the summer, so rangers recommend the shoulder seasons. Admission is $10 for a one-day vehicle pass.
